He's an agent with Alternate Management.
He is Peter Wall and he represents some pretty heavy hitters, Victor Hedman, Jonas Brodin,
Gabriel Landeskog for the purposes of this conversation.
We'll talk plenty about Marcus Pedersen.
Thanks so much for joining me today, Peter.
How are you?
I'm very good.
Good to see you again, Jeff.
Yeah, it's good to see you too.
First of all, congratulations on the deal,
Marcus Pederson and the Vancouver Canucks.
It seemed as if this one, you know,
it was like five minutes after Pederson gets traded
to Vancouver, all of a sudden there's an announcement
of a deal.
It felt very much like this was an easy one to make
and it makes it a much more palatable deal
for the Vancouver Canucks having surrendered our first round draft pick.
Like you go into this one, like I'll be honest with you, Peter.
I looked at this one.
I said, Peter's got like how many different cards he can play.
Like all the advantage here is on Peter.
Like it's an expiring contract for the player.
Vancouver just gave up a really good first round pick to get him.
This is advantage, alternative management here.
How were the negotiations?
Well, thanks a lot for that. But I think also one key component to this is the management
already been with Markus for several years and he's been with them. So they liked him way back before he even was with the
Pennywise. So when this trade came in place, we did like some, I don't know,
heavelliest thing for the comps and we kind of ended up fairly close to
each other right out of the gate. So once that was something that they could agree on,
we worked on the structure and they were very, very...
So they were hard and fast to get it done. They wanted to get it done fast.
And I also think that Marcus got to play a couple of games and got to talk a little bit, know talk it a little bit, talk it, had some good comments at the games about his
leadership right off the gate too. So I think Marcus was really happy.
We knew what could have been in the process for him as a Penguin. We've been in the conversation with the management for Penguin. Sorry?
Did you say Kyle Dubas?
Yeah. We knew what was in the cooking. Once we understood it was back, Vancouver. I think Marcus liked it and after a few games
He just felt like hey, I'm gonna stay here and do it if they want to do it then then then we
Make sure to have it. See I really like Marcus's story as well
As you well know and you can speak with more authority than I can
Marcus was a forward I think until 15 or 16 years old.
And then, and I don't know why, he changed positions,
became a defenseman, was an offensive defenseman,
and then over and through the course of time
has changed his game where he's now a very safe,
steady, reliable defender in the NHL.
Can you sort of walk us through his career and, and, and why did he make that
transition from being a forward to a defenseman?
Well, when I, when I talked to him, I still think that his widgets team
ruined him of a career as a center forward and then a chelp as a joke.
team ruined him of a career as the center forward and then a chelp as a joke.
He was in my mind when he was 15-16 he was just amazing as a center forward and
the under 17 year I think it was they introduced him to be a defense man and he liked it. He's a smart kid so the play. And he came in here and played some power play.
But look at the roster, look at the power play roster with Penguins.
Then you need to adjust to what's in there for you.
And he has just developed a really, really steady two-way game.
He is always the team first obviously but I think also that
if the if the Canucks would use him as a power play the fan but he would probably
contribute there as well but they have a pretty good power play little line of
work. Quinn Hughes is okay but. But you maintain though that still,
like there is still, like I understand,
like playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins,
playing with Carlson or LeTang,
we understand who's got the assignments.
But so you're saying then that there is still
some offensive upside, should Vancouver need
slash want it in Marcus Pedersen?
Absolutely.
In my mind that there is a lot yeah. What is
Vancouver, we know the player, I'm always curious about the person that's
why I like talking to you specifically about your players and that is like what What type of person is Vancouver getting here? Well, off the ice, he's very calm.
He loves to spend time with his teammates.
He's a very team-first, team-oriented guy, family-oriented guy too.
He's just a decent, good guy on the side, a lot of fun,
likes to play golf, he's a social guy. He's a very competitive guy and he is a
leader. He can be leader quietly or verbally. I think he has shown both so far already with the Kronachs. He's a very likeable
guy. He never put himself first. If he has something to say, it's for the team's best,
whether it's criticizing himself or not, but he would always put the team first.
He doesn't need attention or he's not need needed at all. It's on the contrary.
He understands that he's a piece of the puzzle and he wants to contribute as much as possible.
How did you think this season was going to go?
Like, did you think that there was a chance of resigning with Pittsburgh?
Do you think that he was going to go to the end of the season and then test free agency?
Did you think that there might be a trade come trade deadline?
How did you think the season was going to work out for Marcus Pedersen?
We went back to the summer, 2024.
I actually thought we had a case of resigning and stay.
Dubas wanted to see how the team started up and how they were doing, whether they are
going deep into a playoff and will be buying at the trade deadline or the opposite.
I think once the season started, my belief for resigning kind of disappeared.
And as we did not speak at all regarding that
and no negotiation has been going on
since the regular season started.
Right.
It was obviously when you look in the mirror
or look back here with the JT Miller and Elias Gidderson
saying I'm trading Miller, maybe this would have happened earlier. That wasn't the problem either.
But we didn't really know anything. And actually, we came to a point where it really doesn't matter
because we don't have a say in it anyway. So yeah, go there every day and play and
do your best and we'll see what comes out of it. March 7, obviously, the first date in the calendar
that you can look at. But other than that, no. But we'd spelled a little bit like a Gensel year ago where there's no conversation, the standings is
not in their favor, so most likely there's a trade coming up. Yes.
Just as a quick thought, you do very well with high-end Swedish defensemen, whether it's Marcus,
whether it's Viktor Hedman, whether it's Jonas Brodin,
it's Timothy Lillagren, now it's the San Jose Sharks.
Why does this seem to be, as an agent,
one of your default settings?
I mean, Anton Saliyev, even though he's not Swedish,
Saliyev goes to the first round last year
to the New Jersey Devils.
What is it with you and defenders, Peter?
I don't know. We reflected over that too. We got a couple of good forwards as well, but yeah,
we got a couple of other defensemen actually entering into the league next season as well. So that is actually something that keeps coming.
Theo Lindstein with the St. Louis Blues hopefully comes over next year.
We got a couple with the Hurricanes and with the Bruins as well.
We'll see what's going down here.
Yeah, I don't know, Jeff.
He has a really good eye for the D side.
We've never played a very good D myself. Maybe I just didn't know how
good they are both in skating and passing and stuff like that. Well, you know, Salomoncin as
well is doing great in Manitoba at the AHL All-Star. That guy looks really good. He looks
fantastic. You know this one is coming. I have to ask you. See, one of your favorite players
you're actually missing out is Mario Ferraro.
Well, okay.
So, okay.
I wanna get there.
I wanna get to Mario Ferraro in a second
because someone asked me recently,
this is someone that knows
that Gabriel Landeskog is my favorite player,
asked me recently,
how does Peter Wallen end up representing Mario Ferraro?
And I said, I wonder if the common thread
is Gabriel Landis Gogg.
Did Landis Gogg introduce you to Ferraro
since they, I mean, Landis Gogg now lives
where Mario Ferraro grew up?
That was the answer that I gave him,
knowing full well that I'm pulling that answer out of my butt.
Is it the right answer or not?
No, that's pulled out of your ass, Mike.
This is actually pretty funny because I used to be with a couple of other agencies.
I was in the middle of negotiating and it didn't turn out well, so I was sitting out
here.
I was allowed to try to recruit new players.
I have a friend in the Toronto area and he wanted into the market and we started to look
at some players and we found Mario. It was 1415,
10th run pick in the old shell, twice rejected by Barry Coles in the camps. But that was
back in the day, he's a good friend of mine and I, we did some stuff there for a year or two and one Mario Ferraro was one of the
the the lucky draws that we had finding him in that year and kept
the connection with him and all within around the family and that turned out to be a pretty good pick
He is one of the best personalities in the NHL I keep saying to to myself, like, that's Captain Material, like all of it, you know how I feel about Mario Ferraro.
And you know that I can't let you go, Peter,
before I ask about my favorite hockey player,
and that is Gabriel Landeskog.
And I'll be honest with you, like, the minute,
like as soon as I saw the rant in the trade,
my first thought was, oh, Landeskog's coming back.
Like that was like the first place in my head,
like, oh, Gabriel Landeskog is coming back. Like that was like your first place in my head. Like Gabriel Landiscag is coming back.
Is there anything you can share with us about
where Gabriel Landiscag is at and how he's doing?
I wish.
We know and you know
the personality is
doing everything
and everything in order to get that Neon
percent value gap. It's a step forward, step back, two forward, one back. So it
just takes a lot of time, maybe a little bit more time than expected, but not too
far so far yet. We'll see. But it's obviously a grind for him, but for sure.
At this moment, there's really not any timeline for coming back yet.
All right, our fingers are crossed.
Peter, thanks so much for this. Congratulations on the Pedersen deal.
It looks great for you, your client and the Vancouver Connacs.
I appreciate your time as always. Be well.
Thank you Jeff. I appreciate it.
Take care. day to day cause you can call it a rut I went to the dark man
