Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the sheet in our snappy new intro music. Glad to have you bored. Try to refresh things every year. And there's more sort of subtle tweaking and subtle changes coming up here on the program the next few weeks. As we get set for another season of hockey. Exhibition season continues. And, Zach, you know how I know that hockey is close? Like, there's one very specific thing that happens.
Starting point is 00:00:32 And you know what that is? People get really, really touchy and really, really, really sensitive and really, really, really snide. Things that they would just, meh, in July, they ain't responding that way in September. I'm going to give you two examples. Two examples from yours truly. You probably have your own. So a couple of weeks. No, last was it last week?
Starting point is 00:00:58 Yeah, last week on the show. I mentioned something about Brady Kachuk. Right away, Ottawa Senators found, get our captain's name out of your mouth. Yep. So I mentioned if Brady Kachuk ever became available, Dallas would be at the front of the line. Because that's the exact type of player
Starting point is 00:01:16 that Dallas has been looking for for a long time. I also put Sam Bennett in that category as well. Panthers fans are like, yeah, say whatever you want. No problem. Keep not Ottawa about Brady Kachuk. it was right away sensitivity, okay?
Starting point is 00:01:32 But fine, I get it. Like sports is territorial that way. You're passionate about your team. I get it. And that's kind of an issue that's rankled Ottawa senators fans. The other, and I was totally stunned at this.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Maybe I'm just like completely out of touch now. Well, maybe I'm just out of touch on social media on Twitter specifically. I refuse to call it X, by the way, because Twitter was the name that it was assigned at birth. And I'm told that that's how you have to refer of things as they were assigned at Perth.
Starting point is 00:02:01 So Twitter, hockey Twitter, very upset that I had the audacity to wish well, to wish well for one very specific person on the weekend. You know what that was? Joe Valeno.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Oh, I saw it. Joe Villano. Just like, man, if the Habs can unlock him, look out. I throw that out there thinking like, you know what? He's got all that. We've talked about it before.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Joe Villano has all the skills, all the talents, all the qualities that you'd want in a hockey player. It hasn't worked. It hasn't worked with the Detroit Red Wings. Hasn't worked. Didn't work with Chicago Blackhawks. Can it work now with the Montreal Canadians? Can Marty San Luis unlock this player? Because I think we've all seen players like this before.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Players that you look at and you say, I don't know how this isn't working. I don't know how this guy hasn't popped. I don't know how this guy hasn't cracked yet. it really makes no sense. Valeno was one of those guys. You should have seen the response. You should have seen the responses. It was like visceral hate for someone you've never met before.
Starting point is 00:03:10 That being Joe Valeno. Say what you want about me. I really don't care. But like the response is about Joe Valano. And all I'm saying is, I hope the kid does well. Like you've heard me say it before, Zach. I don't cheer for teams. I cheer for players.
Starting point is 00:03:21 I want to see people have success. I really, really do. And Joe Valano was one of those guys. I hope that it really comes. comes together for Joe Valano. That's it. Simple. And the tweets are still coming in about Joe
Starting point is 00:03:33 Foliano. So that's how I know. I saw all over my timeline too. That's how I know. That's how I know that hockey is close by. It's because everybody already is in oversensitive mode. Like you know how there's a point in the season where everybody hits irrational reaction mode?
Starting point is 00:03:51 We're there early. I don't know what it is. It's a comment on our society. It's the state of the league. the state of North America. I don't know. Don't know what it is. But everyone's getting there really early.
Starting point is 00:04:02 When you're upset about someone saying, I hope Joe Villano can turn his career around. I was kind of shocked the response that you got to. It was like, because I started seeing it coming up from people just like making dumb jokes and stuff about I like those in response to it. No, but I like those.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I'm just like, I like those. Like, how did we get here? If San Jose can unlock Zedina. Like, like it's funny like it's great that but they like those things i love it that's hilarious poke fun of me all you want and that those are great lines i love it but like i just don't know where the anger comes from anyhow uh you know someone who's my best my favorite one was by the way
Starting point is 00:04:42 just what's that on this go for response to it somebody had uh if i can unlock my two for one firehouse subs this weekend i was like all right you know what no the best one was good on you Though the best ones were about the 32 Thoughts Podlines, if they can unlock Kyle Bacoskis, look out. Those I like. Those were funny. Those were good. I appreciated those.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Anyhow, we move along. We got a lot to get to on the program today. And I do want to talk a little bit. You know, let's do it now here before we do daily outlines brought to you by Fandul. Let's just a quick thought on Mark Andre Fleury. first of all there are a lot of other people that are a lot of other players
Starting point is 00:05:32 that would have received a we can't miss you if you won't leave vibe from fans because how many times have we thought this is the last oh no this is the last time we're always going to go to the World Championship okay this is the last time we're going to like there would be some people who would be like
Starting point is 00:05:48 we can't miss you if you won't leave like enough already but this guy is so beloved by teammates by fans even rival fans as well, which is a true testament to someone's popularity, that it was a wonderful third period. And for everybody that collects goofy trivia, even though the goal didn't count, the last player to score a goal on Mark Andre Fleury,
Starting point is 00:06:09 will go down as Luca Adele Bell Blues in the shootout. That's a goal that doesn't even count. I was seeing this at Gregor on the DFO rundown last night. They came out this morning. This isn't like Andrew Burnett with the final goal on Patrick Waugh, because this one doesn't count, but actually he will go down as the last goal score against Mark Andre Fleury.
Starting point is 00:06:31 But my point was about what we saw on the weekend in Pittsburgh. The outpouring was the outpouring. The love was the love. The pranks for the pranks. All things you expect around Mark Andre Fleury in what is going to be in his swan song. Even afterwards, like, I'm tired. My hip is sore. Like, I can't keep doing this.
Starting point is 00:06:50 I know you're chanting one more year, but I can't keep doing this. Like, I'm really done. I'm closing the door. Um, this is the blueprint now, isn't it? Because the rink is packed. They're selling merch. It's a big event. It, uh, it pops the brand again.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Like, I threw out there over the weekend, like, how do the penguins not, I know they already did the jersey retirement stuff, but like, how do they not do it for Yager? If Yager wants to do it too, which is the main caveat here. But Gregor threw in a couple of other names as well. Like if this is one and done for Jonathan Taves with Winnipeg Jets. Does Chicago do this with Taves? Maybe the best example is somewhere down the road. Did the Tampa Bay Lightning do this with Stephen Stamco's? It's to sign the PTO, do the one game, fill the rank, the big goodbye, one more twirl.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Is this like the blueprint for a way to make, to make, even though the exhibition games are going down to four, to make exhibition games somehow meaningful for the fans? Because everybody came away in Pittsburgh loving that moment. Loving that game and loving that third period. I think it was a little more circumstantial though Like I think the Stamcoast one would work I don't think it would be the same for Taves Because he did say goodbye at the end of his time in Chicago
Starting point is 00:08:03 Right remember we had the big State off the ice the salute the crowd everything So like there was that opportunity But he's playing again Knowing that that was a buddy buddy's playing again I know I know but it was a it we said bye Like Chicago said goodbye That's what it was more
Starting point is 00:08:18 Pat Kane Pat Kane That could work Stamcoast would work in my opinion, Florey's worked because of the way that the relationship was severed when it did and then coming back
Starting point is 00:08:28 to kind of mend it. It's like the whole story coming back around. The Yager one, I think you, like, that's the stretch. To me, that's... You don't think Penns fans would fill the building? You don't think they'd fill the building for Yager one more time?
Starting point is 00:08:43 68 on the wing, here we go. But for money, yeah, it would be like financially and drawing eyes to one game, it would. but holding the same weight, I would say, no, it wouldn't. We're just so far beyond that point, I think, with Yager. But there would be mullets and stuff in the crowd everywhere, and you'd have all 32 jerseys that he wore when he played.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Every team should do it. Every team should do it. Have Yager played one period. Just, just like for all the exhibition, for however long it'll take, just signing PTOs with every team that he played for. And that's how Yager stretches it out. plays out the string.
Starting point is 00:09:23 I mean, it would be pretty funny. And every now and then you go on social media and you do see Yager. He's recorded some assist in, you know, playing on the third line, the team that he owns and stuff. Like, holy shit, I can't believe this guy's still playing. But, dude, Mark Andre Florey's going to go
Starting point is 00:09:38 on the Hall of Fame before Yager. Think about that for one second. He's going to go through the waiting period and go into the hockey Hall of Fame. Jogger's still going to be playing. I know he's injured right now. Yeah. He's like Mark Andre Floree is going to beat Yager
Starting point is 00:09:49 to the Hall of Fame. Crosby might too. See how long Crosby wants to play. Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. We've got to show you. There's no way around that. It's all I could think about. Like, who's next?
Starting point is 00:10:04 This is the model. This is the blueprint. Good on the penguins. And good on Mark Andre Fleury for essentially being Mark Andre Fleury. I always find it weird, you know, congratulating people on being themselves. But that was like Mark Andre Fleury's job to be himself over the weekend in Pittsburgh. All right. Daily outline powered by our friends.
Starting point is 00:10:21 at Fanduel. Fanduel, make every moment more with North America's number one sports book. And coming up on the program today, we're going to talk a lot about contracts. And we're going to talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs and them locking up their number one goaltender. Jay Rosehill from Leaves Morning Take will stop by,
Starting point is 00:10:37 former Maple Leaf himself. There's a couple of fights I want to go over with Jay as well and get his thoughts on. Stephen Ellis has his prospect rankings out at daily faceoff.com. Spoiler, Gavin McKenna, number one, Keaton Verhoff, number two, North Dakota. after that it starts to get interesting and the Times starts to get spicy as well
Starting point is 00:10:54 with an ex-N-Heller's son cracking the top 32 we'll talk about Anthony Stolars we'll talk about the contracts and we'll talk about a whole bunch of other stuff here and I'll be curious to get Jay's thoughts and let me know when Jay's aboard here to get Jay's thoughts on Yager night as well
Starting point is 00:11:14 because I'm sure would be funny like that would that would get everybody going to, yeah. I think it really would. So a couple of contracts to up. So Mason McTavish resigns with the Anaheim Ducks, six years, seven million AAB. It is a $42 million contract for the, is he the second line center or will he be the first line center for the Anaheim Ducks?
Starting point is 00:11:41 All you know is, and, you know, they still have the Leo Carlson deal to get done eventually here as well. Down the middle, they look really, really good. with these two guys up the gut. And it seems as if $7 million is a very comfortable ceiling for Pat for Beak. Like, you really have to give it up to Pat for Beak here in a lot of ways. This is not an overpay. This is not an underpay by any stretch of the imagination.
Starting point is 00:12:08 I want to respect, you know, what $7 million is and what that represents. But it's a really good number for a team that's still going to have a lot of cap space and they're going to have their, you know, sign cutter goche. and they're going to have to sign Leo Carlson, and they're going to have to sign Olin Zellweger and Pavel Minchikov. I'll tell you what, though, Jackson Lacombe may be a really interesting one
Starting point is 00:12:33 because he's the only one in that group, Zach, that is arbitration eligible. And he's their best defenseman. I don't know that it gets that. They almost got that. They almost went into the arbitration room with Troy Terry until cooler heads prevailed like literally you know as it's described to me like they were in they were in the lobby of the arbitrator like just waiting for the door to open and then all of a
Starting point is 00:12:59 sudden this contract appeared and Troy Terry ended up you know resigning with the anaheim ducks on a long-term deal I don't know I'm getting way ahead of myself here if it gets that far with Jackson Lecombe but you want to talk about a breakout star for Anaheim last year Jackson Lecombe was it but anyway he's the only more their arbitration rights they have room to do all of this now that they have their sort of ceilings set here for a lot of these guys at seven million dollars that's some really really and we didn't even mention like you know down the middle too like roger mcqueen's going to show up eventually here with the anaheim ducks and you got carlson and mctavish and mcqueen down the middle and if you believe you win stanley cups down the middle
Starting point is 00:13:37 and on the blue line all of a sudden anaheim is set up really good and this is i think maybe you feel differently the first year where anaheim has legit expect I think the expectation is wildcard for the Anaheim ducks this year. Do they get there? I don't know. But everything's trending in that direction for them to at least get close. And, you know, Pat Verbeek's been around long enough now that, okay, like if you're the owners, if you're the Samuelis, you're saying, okay, you've been here long enough to move things around a little bit here, to put a new coat of paint on, look under the hood, change a couple of things. Now we want to see some results. Like it does feel like this is the year where results are expected from the Anaheim ducks not just the question are the kids getting better the kids need to be here now it feels that way to me does it feel that way to you yeah it does i think bringing in the guys that they did like when you look at truba and crider i think if they're the pieces you're relying on let's go to new york specifically they're the pieces you're relying on to be the guys who are going to like carry the team and drive you and push you over the edge
Starting point is 00:14:45 that's a tough spot to be in for them, especially at this point in their careers. But if they're the insulating pieces around these great young guys, you're building a good room, you're building some leadership in there, let them take over the team, let Trubas and Criders and Strom and Vitrano be the pieces who help them. Yeah, you're in a much, much better spot.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Quinville comes in here now too. It's just like a very different, like energy around what they are, who they are. You can kind of see it in their interviews and everything that these guys do too because I was cried or went on the empty netters pod like speaking glowingly of just the intensity of the practices and how the kids are and everything like you could just tell there's a more positive feel coming out of that room as well you know what that room is not anymore stale and you know who is you know who anaheim's room was stale for cam fowler
Starting point is 00:15:38 when you want and cam fowler signs the three-year contract extension with the st louis blue is a really good deal like I love the deals that were signed this weekend. Like I can't, like, no matter how hard I squint, I cannot really look at these and go, like, I can't even do like the talk radio 101. We need to talk about this on Monday. I can't believe what, like, this is a good deal. And what it's done too is it has, like, what I was saying in Gregor last night on rundown
Starting point is 00:16:05 was I don't know if this trade helped Cam Fowler more or helped Colton Perrako more. Like, does Perrako help Cam Fowler or does Cam Fowler help Coler? and Pereco or it is a combination of both. It's probably a combination of both, but what a pair this has turned out to be. All of a sudden, we're starting to really notice, and I guess Four Nations had a lot to do with it, too, but we're really starting to notice just how good Colton Pereco is.
Starting point is 00:16:30 16 goals, man. And you tend to forget, like, how marvelous a skater and how marvelous a defenseman Cam Fowler is. And I can't help but think that a lot of it is because he got out of a really, really stale situation. How many times did you watch that Anaheim Ducks team? And this is with all due respect to those athletes, but I mean, players feel it too.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Did you say to yourself, man, it feels really stale there and it feels like they're just going through the motions? It's not an insult. It's just a reality. It happens with a lot of people in their jobs. Thankfully, we've always been inspired every single day to go to work, and we've never known a stale day in our lives to our current and all of our ex-bosses.
Starting point is 00:17:11 but you can see it right and it and it must have felt that way for Cam Fowler nice deal, good deal for Fowler good deal for the St. Louis Blues and if you're Colton Pereco you're feeling really good about this one because your partner's locked up
Starting point is 00:17:25 for another three years yeah that is a good way to put it the stale locker room and did kind of feel like they were just in no man's land for a bit to answer the question about who it helps more I think
Starting point is 00:17:39 this is a kind of astute like a cop out answer but i i think it's a combination where it's like one couldn't help out the other like cam fowler couldn't be helped out by colton perico if colin perico wasn't helped out by camp fowler right like going to this new situation as you mentioned getting this rejuvenation of life energy whatever it may be helps out cam fowler so much that he's now able to help out colton perico you know like he has now found something new that he couldn't have found within him in Anaheim for the past couple of seasons that he can now bring to the table. Because if he still had that stillness that he did in Anaheim, I don't think he helps Parakeau the same way.
Starting point is 00:18:18 So it's like you needed one to have the other. And they are just different enough as players to make this work. Like if there was like an overlap of skill or they did similar things or, you know, Colton Pereko was trying to be what Cam Fowler is and Cam Fowler was trying to pretend to be who Colton Pereco was. It wouldn't work. But they are just different enough. What's the old line? Cows don't make ham. You can't be who you're not as a player or as a person.
Starting point is 00:18:50 And Fowler and Poreko are, I don't want to say perfectly, but pretty near perfectly different that that combination works. So, yeah, congratulations to Camp Fowler. Good job by the St. Louis. And by the way, Doug Armstrong. You want to talk about, like, setting the table for next general manager, Alex Steen, whether it was the offer sheets, the extension of Cam Fowler here, like, if you're Alex Steen, next general manager of the St. Louis Blues, table's kind of set for you here.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Like, that Armstrong's done some tremendous work getting this one set. Coming up in a couple of moments here, we're going to be joined by Jay Rose Hill, former NHL or former Toronto Maple Leaf we'll talk about the Anthony Stolars contract for years $15 million $3.75 is the AAV. The team does sign to a tryout
Starting point is 00:19:47 James Reimer and there was a lot of commentary around they have to sign him he has to play these games to which I'm saying to myself why not just Dennis Hildeby as you wait for Joe Wall to come back
Starting point is 00:20:02 from whatever it is he or whomever around him is going through. I don't understand this sort of rush to we have to have we have to play James Reimer right away for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I don't see it. I'm
Starting point is 00:20:19 really really curious to see what Jay Rosell thinks about this. I mean he follows the team inside and out. I don't get this oh they have to they have to sign Rimer and they got to play Rimer. Like they have to do. Why? What do?
Starting point is 00:20:35 we doing here? Why not Dennis Hill to be? He's already played games. It's not as if he's going to go out and embarrass himself or embarrass the team. I just don't understand the rush to do it. But nonetheless, also, and I don't know what to make of this. You guys saw the report about Yvgeny Kuznetsov, we need to hear from the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers are interested, et cetera, et cetera, I really don't know what to make of that one. I'm sure that you have Gennig's nuts off once to come back and play in the NHL
Starting point is 00:21:13 and draw an NHL salary. I just not so sure that that fit is there or right with the Toronto Maple Leafs. But we shall see. One thing I want to draw your attention to as well. Oh, by the way, J.T. Miller. J.T. Miller is being evaluated
Starting point is 00:21:34 by the New York Rangers. More on that, come up in a couple of seconds. But one thing I want to draw your attention to, there was a piece by Dan Rosen at NHL.com this weekend. Miller, ready to turn page on past and write new chapter as captain with the New York Rangers. First of all, this is an excellent piece by Dan. This is a really, really good, really good piece,
Starting point is 00:21:58 really interesting story. And one of the things that I really paused on and keep coming back to it. I'll share it with you. You can go and read it. It's on NHL.com. This is Dan Rosen. Miller said how he was cast publicly in Vancouver as a yeller
Starting point is 00:22:15 and a demanding teammate was overblown, though he added it was an experience that can help guide him in his new role with the Rangers. Here's a quote from J.T. Miller. I don't think it's ever going to be perfect, but the emotion I play with, it's in me. So it's managing that, keeping it to 5% to 10% of the time that it's bad, Miller said. We all know that guys who play with emotion, you're not going to be 100% good.
Starting point is 00:22:49 It's easy, here's the money line. It's easy for guys who don't have a heartbeat to say, hey, calm down. That's kind of empty to me. but I just think it's about keeping it to 5% to 10% of the time. Let me share that again. It's easy for guys who don't have a heartbeat to say, Hey, calm down. Who could he be talking about?
Starting point is 00:23:23 Who could J.T. Miller be talking about? It's easy for guys who don't have a heart. heartbeat to say, hey, calm down. Interesting notes on a really, really interesting piece by Dan Rose and NHL.com about J.T. Miller. We are standing by for Jay Rose, so it's going to be a little bit late here. But I am informed he is coming. So we'll get to the Anthony Stoll artist in the Trump Maple Leafs conversation. Also, Stephen Ellis joins to talk about his prospect rankings coming up here in a couple of moments.
Starting point is 00:23:55 One other thing, I mentioned Vancouver there a second ago in relation to J.T. Miller. uh by the way do you have a thought on that j t miller quote did you hear it are we trying to get rosy on uh no i heard it there at the end um yeah that's a pretty who's he talking about those ones where it's like i have no i have no idea there's a lot where you would have to fight like dig through the weeds to figure out what somebody's talking about what's the messaging here what's going on behind the scenes oh something's happening no no we know like there's this one was obviously about somebody it couldn't have been more cut and dry
Starting point is 00:24:32 what the hell he was saying about this one I mean I guess that this is probably feels pretty comfortable going out and saying that one given what he just dealt with coming out of there and the brush he was painted with
Starting point is 00:24:50 being like, all right watch this you want to know what I thought about the whole situation here I appreciate it because from a media standpoint point it's like well you didn't just say hey we're not going to talk about it we're not going to like oh no i don't want to answer these questions he came out and set it right away so i have respect for that and the honesty but holy shit he couldn't have been more direct
Starting point is 00:25:15 listen good on him for being honest to dan rose and nchl dot com it's a really good piece i drive one's attention to it if you get a chance give this one a read speaking of vancouver i don't think that brayton coots plays for the vancouver canucks all season but man he's making their decision difficult. I don't know if you watched last night's Vancouver Edmonton game. And I trust me, I don't put a ton of stock into preseason games, trust me.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Although, how about those two goals by Bradley Dodeau? Ooh, with the Carolina Hurricanes. Man, those were snipes. Coots is making it really hard. Man, he looks great. My default on someone like Braden Coots, the Vancouver Conucks draft
Starting point is 00:25:54 in the first round, the most recent NHL draft in Los Angeles, is to send him back to Seattle. go let him have one more year of junior, go play for the will of juniors, et cetera. The other thing I always watch for in Vancouver games right now and I think we all do, when we see Philip Heidel in the lineup, the first question is,
Starting point is 00:26:08 did he get through the game? And then you start to worry about performance afterwards, but the first thing with Heedle is, did he survive three periods of hockey, and so far is so good, and that pass that he made in the third period, albeit in a losing effort, the past that he made,
Starting point is 00:26:22 the Jonathan Lekaromacki. If you're a Vancouver Canucks fan, A, Coots look great again, and B, Heidel made it through another game and made a sick pass and was really good for all three periods. Made a sick pass to Jonathan Lackerobecki leading to that goal. Again, not putting too much into preseason, but all you can do is talk about the things that are in front of you. And in front of us right now is Jay Rosell, one half of the excellent impact player tandem that is Leif's morning take.
Starting point is 00:26:49 He joins me now. Jay, how are you today, pal? Not bad, Jeffrey. How are you doing? I'm good. I thought of you earlier today. Really? I did because, well, I was scrolling on the old Twitter this morning
Starting point is 00:27:04 and came across Hockey Fights, Hockey Fights.com, wonderful, which was, which by the way, I was telling someone on the weekend, a good buddy of mine started that website. I had the name of David Singer. I think he went out to work for Disney. He doesn't own it anymore from Hell's Kitchen, New York. I met him one night, went out for a few drinks before a Montreal, New York Rangers game. Great guy, but he was the OG of HockeyFights.com. and I saw one today
Starting point is 00:27:28 I want to play it for you maybe you remember this one Sandy McCarthy and Marty McSorley from 95 now here's what here's what special about it so Marty lines up to take the face off and then Sandy goes in to take
Starting point is 00:27:41 whatever could be happening here Jay Roselle like this used to be the league man and like this one goes on for a while these are big boys yes Marty's going to get the jersey off it's kind of what Marty does But I was thinking about this, a couple things.
Starting point is 00:27:58 One, this used to be the league. And two, these are guys that were feared by, you know, a lot of people in the league, even like other tough guys. Jay, who scared you? Two guys scared me. The boogeyman was scary. Derek Bougard. And Steve McIntyre scared me. Those are because a very high percentage.
Starting point is 00:28:26 of their scraps they're hurting guys like you know back in the day everyone's chucking and the toe to toe that would happen like in that one you're showing they're tough guys and for some reason those guys could just eat them um obviously we know the consequences of that now and try to try to take away from that but during my era those two guys were we're catching guys with right hands they're so big they're so strong they're so good on their feet that i mean look at todd fedora his face is crushed in completely he's never the same um Trevor gillies one of the scariest guys in in pro hockey his first NHL game gets absolutely buried by the boogeyman and you know radissy vanans um edmonton versus calgary in the preseason didn't play again oh never played
Starting point is 00:29:15 again he was supposed to rent my house in calgary and he got her no way that that blew up that whole plan so that scary stuff i don't mind going against the tough guys and i kind of fought pretty much all comers and was trying to fight, you know, Brashear and different big name guys, but those two in particular, their right hands were breaking guys' faces. I mean, that's not fun. And you don't see that often in a hockey fight, like a fat lip and a bloody nose, fine, a black guy, whatever.
Starting point is 00:29:45 But when you're doing serious damage and changing people's careers, those guys were the scary ones, those two in particular. Okay, so a couple of things. One, you mentioned Donald Brashear. I'm not sure if you saw the story this morning coming out of Sweden. He's catching on with a Swedish team, 53 years old, and Donald Bershear is still out there. The other thing that, and this is where it gets, like, with you,
Starting point is 00:30:11 like I share a concern because I care about people. I'm concerned about their brains. I understand that this is professional and this is your choice, and no one's forced to do it. I get that and I respect it. But what I, when I watch fights now, Like, those guys were terrifying. I remember that McIntyre
Starting point is 00:30:28 Rae to Savonan's fight like it was yesterday and how terrifying that was to say nothing. I think it would happen to Todd Fedorik when he got caved in. But the thing,
Starting point is 00:30:37 when I see fights now, because especially with younger players, here I'm going to sound like grandpa, with younger players, is they haven't grown up really doing it. So the technique's not great, and that's fine, but nobody wants to block a punch
Starting point is 00:30:52 because nobody knows how. Like when you watch some of these fights, towards you do not think to yourself like oh buddy you got to protect yourself better even we saw it with remi right like you saw it with rampi go like buddy you need to learn how like you're a big boy but you're not protecting yourself and there's you know deloree and the live like there's still killers out there man and i find that i see that with young players that want to do this they don't protect themselves at all they leave themselves wide open and it's hard though like how do you learn that you I mean, I always thought to myself, man, like the amount of scrab, I think if you try to add up every time you were in a bare-knuckle fight on your skates, I'm probably at 160 to 170 times I did that.
Starting point is 00:31:34 And for the very first time I ever did it, it's all trial and error. Like, you don't get a dress rehearsal for it. Yeah, you can jostle around with your teammate after practice, whatever. There's nothing that you can simulate where the stuff hits the ground and that whistle goes and everyone turns and looks and everyone in the crowd stands. up and you're going for real and your blood is pumping there's no way you can simulate that so the only way to get better and to learn is to do it more and that doesn't really solve the problem that you're trying to help it's like a double-edged sword there so but i mean hockey fights dot com as you brought up uh to start this that was our that was our our crutch to go on there and to to watch
Starting point is 00:32:22 To analyze, to rewind 100%. That's your scouting. Yeah. That's what you do. And you'd know what guys did. And if he likes to throw these big uppercuts, then you know, you know, staying back and keeping your head straight and standing straight up was huge. If you start to try to protect yourself by ducking your head, you're going to eat those uppercuts. So if some guy loves to throw those, you've got to be cognizant of it.
Starting point is 00:32:44 And, you know, it's, oftentimes you can hold on and seatbelt enough to protect yourself if you need to. but where I really see it goes south is when a guy has no idea what he's doing and he thinks I'm going to protect myself by doing this one and bending over at the waist and you're just I mean if you were going to say I'm going to give this guy a free shot and it's going to count what's the worst thing you could do is to put your head in that position and let him throw from underneath right at you so that's where it gets scary but I don't really see a lot of ways to prevent yourself from getting hurt and from getting better at it and knowing your logistics and your techniques
Starting point is 00:33:21 other than just doing it more. I don't know if people want to hear that or not. So I'm glad you brought up scouting on hockey fights. One final thing. I swear I'm going to get into Stolar's conversation here, but like, how many times are going to get talked to Jay Rose Hill about, like, scrapping, like, this is cool. Brad May and I are very close friends.
Starting point is 00:33:41 I love Mayday. And one time we were out and I was asking him about the Chris Barch fights. Arch, he's now a coach in the OHL. And when Chris Bartch was playing on Dallas And May Day was in Anaheim They had some doozies Some doozies And so they're at the pregame skate
Starting point is 00:33:59 And they're both stretching by the red line My center ice And Bartchie says Mayday We're not number one on hockey fights right now Tonight we got to do it We're going to do it man We've got to get to number one
Starting point is 00:34:12 And you can see this in the fight You can see it on YouTube They go, and it's a classic Chris Barch May Day fight. It's just like guys throwing sandwich grabbers in each other's faces. They're going, they're going, they're going. And May Day said, I started to get, because of an older guy at that point, I started to get really tired.
Starting point is 00:34:30 And Barge's like, no, Mayday, come. And he's like, cheering me on to hit him more. He's like, we've got to get to number one, Mayday. And Mayday's like, Barci, I'm so tired. I'm so tired. Keep going, Mayday. Keep cheering him on to hit him more. And then they get to the Peli Bucks.
Starting point is 00:34:44 And Meda's like, I'm just spent. And he looks over. and Barchie is like pounding on the glass go, we did it, Mayday. That's got to be the number one fight on HockeyFights.com. You guys are crazy. You guys are nuts. It is a weird culture, man.
Starting point is 00:35:00 And it's, you know, I defend it. And people who don't get it, they think that they are able to pick it apart. And you can, right? It's like no other sport has it. It doesn't make sense to some people. But unless you're part of that culture and part of that game and you,
Starting point is 00:35:16 you know do it where it's your it's your priority in life like at a junior hockey level or playing professionally it does make sense and there is a reason it's there people aren't forcing it to be there it's there it's always been there and i argue that it'll always be there to one degree or another maybe not so much as it has been in the olden days of course but it is just crazy how you could say that two guys are fighting bare knuckle and he's cheering him on to get his breath to keep going fighting the guy like in a street fight or a ufc fight you'd never do that it's just such a it's such a thing of its own and i love it's it's it's something that i just it's hard to describe and it's hard to put into words but it is something that is so intense and and so
Starting point is 00:35:58 unique and i it brought the passion and the intensity of a hockey game and it like it was the culmination of all of that that brought to a scrap usually and i just i happen to love that like call me a brute if you want i don't really care i love that and usually know Nobody gets hurt. And usually the guys tap each other on the head after and say good work. And you respect each other. And the other players who don't even do it respect the guys that do it. And they see the value in it. The players have been pulled a million times and they value it quite highly as a matter of fact. So it is such a unique thing. And I know it's kind of going away. Some would argue it's kind of coming back in a ways. But the way the game is played, just the structure of it, the speed. I just think it's part of the fabric of the game. And it is very odd. And you hear stories like you just told. And you, you laugh and shake your head. And I just, I personally, I love it. It's a flow game where there's no out of bounds. It's a flow game where there's no out of bounds. There's a separation between real life and whatever this thing is happening. It's almost like a make-believe world with its own sort of set of ethics and rules and codes of conduct. Anyhow, for a bigger
Starting point is 00:37:06 conversation. Anthony Stolars contract. I'm going to get all serious and professional here, Jay. the Anthony Stolars deal Listen I know the gold tend it's very rare The goaltenders really you know ring the bell And there have been some and we think of you know Eager Schisturkin is you know really rung the bell As far as you know Financial Compensation
Starting point is 00:37:27 I like this deal four year deal of 15 million 3.75 is the AAV He's their top dog and they got him locked up at a really good number I know if Nick Alberga was with us right now He'd say that leaves a lot of money for McDavid Merrick That leaves it a lot of money for McDavid, but what did you make of the other Stolar's deal? Yeah, I wasn't sure what the number was going to look like.
Starting point is 00:37:49 I had an idea of what it would be, and it was higher than he ended up signing for. I thought he could maybe get five if you wanted to get gritty with it. I didn't want to see a holdout. I didn't want to see a distraction. I didn't want to see a bunch of media asking every day, excuse me, about the contract and where they're at in negotiations. All of a sudden, boom, it's done.
Starting point is 00:38:09 And at 3.75 a year, you look at his, numbers. I know he hasn't been a number one goalie for for 10 straight years, but he hasn't had the opportunity to do it. And he seems to be able to, you know, adjust his mindset accordingly. And here was a huge test. You're basically the number one with real good support. You could call them, you know, sharing the number one role. But I thought Stolley was the number one goalie. His numbers were unreal. You're on the stage in Toronto. That market has chewed up and spit out so many goaltenders over the last 25 years. It's shocking. So it's a difficult job. And Stoli handled it wonderfully. I think he's got the mind for it. And he's proven himself. His numbers are way better than
Starting point is 00:38:49 other goaltenders that he's going to make now less than. So I think it's a great deal for the Leafs. And, you know, I dare I say that it seems like there's a pattern of people, players on the Maple Leafs, taking, you know, team friendly deals in order to stay in Toronto and have a chance at something. So it tells me that the belief inside of the players, which you're never going to get their honest opinion, they're always going to give you the fluff. But when they put rubber on the pavement by signing these contracts, it tells me, hey, I want to be here. And that's pretty refreshing because for the past 5, 10 years, it has been nothing. But oh, my God, did you see that number of the guys sign?
Starting point is 00:39:25 And, you know, you look at Kyle Dubas, he seemed to give them the world every time the contract rolled around to giving them max everything and no trade clauses and everything else. And it seems like there's a little bit of a pivot point with tree living. and I can't say enough about what he's done at the helm. The thing about Stolars, too, is when you talk to all the goalie people, they've been barking about Stolars going back to when he played in Anaheim. And it's like, don't sleep on Stolars. And then Florida, and he's like, don't sleep on Stolars. Like somewhere this guy's going to be a number one.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Kind of like with Kevin Lankinen. And Kevin Lankan's, like, all the goalie fraternity, to be like, everyone's sleeping on Kevin Lankin. And then, bam, he, you know, how much of Vancouver's season to Kevin Lichen and salvaged last year. Anthony Stolars was the same way. It seems like he was a guy that was just everybody's waiting for the team to give that guy the chance. And the weird thing about it is, generally, it's not the big market teams that gives a guy like that the chance.
Starting point is 00:40:27 Because everything has to be, there has to be a long track record. We're a heritage organization. This is going to be tough to sell to everybody here. But they did, and it's paid off beautifully for the Toronto Maple Leafs here. Yeah, it has. And Stoli, like, you can't knock him for not being a number one so far. What did you want him to do? Just snap his fingers and be the number one in front of Bobrovsky.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Hey, Bobrovsky out. Yeah, like it doesn't happen, right? And a lot of goaltending situations, if you talk to him, it's opportunity. And you got to be patient and you got to make the most of the opportunity that you have and take your games and take your minutes and just work on your numbers and work on your game while you're backing up, and you can't force something. You're not going to turn down an opportunity to play on the Florida Panthers, but you're going to back up Brobrovsky, and he likes to play a lot.
Starting point is 00:41:14 So you wait for your time, and when the sun shines, you've got to make hay, and that's exactly what Stolaris has done. And if you pay attention to the Maple Leafs, when he's in net, he's a big body, he moves well, his angles are good, and he's very calm. Like, there could be a mayhem scramble in the D-Zone, and he's just turning them aside calmly, like it's the first couple shots of practice, And he has this calming presence that I think reverberate to the defensemen and the rest of the team as well. And by all accounts, it seems like they're really comfortable with him between the pipes.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And that's not to take anything away from Joseph. Well, he has some of the same things as well. But while we're talking about Stoli, if you watch him, he has a very calm demeanor in there. And the big body, he just moves well. And it seems to not lose his position very often. I think he had a really good tenure so far in Toronto. And I expect him to pick up right where he left off. One final goalie issue here.
Starting point is 00:42:04 If I am the Toronto Maple Leafs, I am not signing James Reimer. I'm saying, I'm going to go with Hildeby, and whenever Joseph Wall comes back is when he comes back. I don't understand the rush to, Rhymer's on a PTO, got to sign him as soon as possible. What's wrong with playing Hildaby? What am I missing here? I don't think you're missing anything, but it costs them literally nothing to bring in Rimer. I don't know. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:42:32 That's fine. but like the rush to they have to sign them and he's got to play all these guys why i don't think they do and as they're on their um their retreat right now up to the muskos to do some team building which you kind of bring mostly your final roster there james rammer's not there he's with the marley's squad right now so i don't know what's going to happen with them but they've been very tight-lipped about joseph wall something personal is going on so i'm not going to speculate i don't know how long that's going to be i can't imagine a long time did they have to go out and get someone no did they kind of cover some bases and maybe bring in a familiar face who's been in that market,
Starting point is 00:43:05 who they may or may not use. Okay, yes. But Hiltabia has shown to be pretty good. Is it time for him to maybe step up and get an opportunity to be in the NHL and to be that guy while Wohl is there? I also agree with you. Why not, right? Why not? But so far with that PTO, costs them nothing, covers a base, gives them a layer of support there. Whether they sign them or not, I haven't really seen them thinking they're really rushing and need to sign him right away, but to me it's just kind of a layer of comfort having that PTO there,
Starting point is 00:43:37 give him a chance to come in, he's a familiar with the market. But if they end up going with Hildaby, I wouldn't be shocked, I wouldn't be surprised, and I think it could turn out well. And for Hildobe personally, what an opportunity to, you know, dip your toe in the water, and that's what happens with goalies. You get an opportunity, you've got to make the most of it. So maybe he will be that guy. We'll see what happens
Starting point is 00:43:55 with Rimer. Major grain of salt with this one, and this is a sort of more wide brush full team question. Big grain of salt because we're talking about exhibition games here. Has anyone popped for you? Has anyone changed your mind? Has anyone sort of caught your eye?
Starting point is 00:44:11 Have you noticed something about someone, Jay Rosell, that you know, going in the training camp, you thought, eh, I'm just going to, I'm just going to give this this player sort of the grocery store nod, but now all of a sudden, hmm, hang on a second here. There's something going on that I didn't expect. Well, it's not that I didn't expect, but like Scott Lawton has looked really good in the preseason.
Starting point is 00:44:34 Again, we understand it's the preseason, but he's a guy who, you know, he's an emotional guy. He's always wanted to play for the Leafs and to come here right before the playoffs during their run. He probably overthought it. He told me that he was overthinking it and probably put a little bit too much pressure on himself and wasn't able to perform up to the level that he could. And I think you saw what he's capable in preseason there. He's playing against legit rosters, you know, is his one game, I think, against my Montreal. It was damn near their full roster, and he was just on fire, found a ton of chemistry
Starting point is 00:45:02 with his teammates with Stephen Lorenz in particular, and Easton Cowan, who's another guy, I think he's the one piece on the roster where I can see the roster being done aside from that fourth line right wing. You've got Robertson, you've got Yarn Croke, and you've got Easton Cowan, and usually you'd want to give Easton Cowan at that age some time to season in the American hockey league. But if you're able to come in and you're able to find chemistry with line mates and produce, it's not the fourth line like when
Starting point is 00:45:32 I played where you're getting six minutes a night. I think you can get 11 minutes a night on the fourth line, get some penalty kill time. And if you're finding chemistry with the linemates that you're playing with, which he so far has, I think you can force their hand and say, I make the team better. I know that I'm only X amount of
Starting point is 00:45:48 years old, which is 20 years old, you're not that old. But if he's going to play like that and he's going to force his hand. I think he just brings more to the table than Robert Senator Callie Earncroke, and he very well could play his way on the opening night roster. Interesting. All right. Thanks for the hockey fight talk. That's always fun and the expertise on the Stolars deal. Thanks, pal. We'll talk soon. Anytime, Jeff. Thanks, man.
Starting point is 00:46:19 There he is. Jay Roso, from Toronto Maple Leaf. Noted. and hockey analyst here with us at Daily Faceoff. One half of the tandem, that is, Leif's morning take. From there, I want to direct your attention to DailyFaceoff.com, where you will find, amongst other things, Stephen Ellis's pre-season top 40 prospect rankings. It is September 29th, and Stephen has presented 40. Prospects we should start paying attention to.
Starting point is 00:46:49 One, you've probably already started paying attention to, and that's Gavin McKenna. This is one of those drafts where the draft starts at two. Stephen Ellis joins me now on the sheet. To go over this and other issues around everything prospects. Stephen, first of all, thanks so much for joining me here on the program today. The draft starts at two, correct? Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:12 There will be questions going to the season. Just, I think, can anyone challenge Gavin McKenna? But this feels kind of like the Connor Bedard draft or no one's going to be able to touch him in this. case and it's easy to kind of forget like when you look at some of the performance to some of these other guys have been able to do already in like the CHL, Gavin McKenna hasn't played and we're going to be seeing that very soon as Penn State kind of picks things up in the next couple weeks and I fully expect him to challenge for the national scoring title.
Starting point is 00:47:41 Really? It's funny because I kind of go the other way, but I tend to like pump the brakes on, you know, 17 year olds playing playing college hockey. Like you think he like you're thinking like lead in scoring, Hobie Baker like all of it for Gavin McKenna? See I was the same way with Macklin
Starting point is 00:48:02 Celebrini as you were here of McKenna where I'm just like I don't think I know I always think you got to be really careful these freshmen. You're asking a lot but McKenna you know he's he's gonna be 18 not too long from now he'll be slightly older than some of the other 17 year olds who seen this league and we just saw how when he plays of confidence,
Starting point is 00:48:21 he can be so dominant. Penn State's going to be a team that's going to be challenging for a national title again this year. And I think that you've got a guy like him with some of the veterans he's going to have a chance to play with. I think he's going to be up there. Making it to the Frozen 4,
Starting point is 00:48:36 signing Gavin McKenna, like getting Gavin McKenna to commit. This has been what Penn State has wanted ever since Terry Pagula opened his checkbook and said, how much? Like how much right now, and they haven't played a game, how much right now is this setting up Penn State for the future?
Starting point is 00:48:57 They've been, what this program has, I've been told, what this program wants now more than anything else, and they've done it with a few players, but no stars. They want to send a superstar to the NHL. Like that's what this program wants. It helps with recruiting, obviously. But as far as, you know, something to hang your hat on and a source of pride, that's what they want.
Starting point is 00:49:17 Where is Penn State now already set up for the future? This is something where now it shows that they can attract quality prospects. They've got Jackson Smith, who maybe is going to play a year or two there. They've got more NHL prospects than I can recall ever seen with this team. They've got an NHL prospect at every position. I'm a big fan of Kevin Reidler. He's a solid goaltender. Obviously, Jackson Smith.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Aiden Fink has been able to put up a ton of points. This is a program that has been able to turn guys that, might not get a lot of ice time in other schools, somewhere like Michigan, Michigan State type thing, Boston College, but have an opportunity to play here with a good coach and Guy Godowski
Starting point is 00:49:58 and play with some just quality players overall. I think it's going to be an opportunity to attract a lot more long-term talent. And the fact they got Gavin McKenna, I know it's going to be a one-year thing, but I think every team's got to look at Penn State, say, like, oh, if it's good enough for Gavin McKenna, this is good enough for me.
Starting point is 00:50:15 And that's just it too. Okay, so a few things. Keaton Verhoff from North Dakota is in at number two. I like him, didn't have the best Hulinka tournament. I think it's one thing for Gavin McKenna in his draft here to play with Penn State. Could you make the argument that it's more of a risk having a defenseman do same? Maybe, but not every defenseman can score like Keaton Verhof, stand as tall, it's six foot four and I've talked about him before as a guy that has developed so quickly like
Starting point is 00:50:52 he was playing goalie just a few years ago like he was a goaltender at like 12 years old or something like that his ability to go out there and rise to the point where he's going to be one of the most exciting college defenseman right off the bat is important and with north Dakota i do expect him that got a lot of opportunities to play here and i do expect some some learning curves there but you look at how kind of underwhelming he was the helenka well a few months earlier, he was one of the best defensemen at the U18 World Championship. So if we can get that version of Keaton Verhoff
Starting point is 00:51:22 again, I think he's going to have no issue going out there and playing against him quality competition. But yeah, I always feel like it's harder for a defenseman to go and play at this level at a young age because you don't have as many other guys at your position to help you out there. You can struggle a little bit at the pace
Starting point is 00:51:38 up front, but you've got two other wingers who can help you at a center and a winger. In this case, you and one other guy, you've got to be able to do it all. But if anybody can do it is Keen Verhoff. You know who else was a goalie? Sam Dickinson. Yes, he is.
Starting point is 00:51:52 And he's got the size. He would have been a great NHB. So who else should be? Ivar Stenberg, you have in at number three. Ryan Lynn, I love that picket at number four, Vancouver Giants defensemen. I know there's going to, like one of the themes of this draft is where have all the centers gone?
Starting point is 00:52:10 And I know that Keaton Verhof is a large defense, but you have some like smaller, speedy or highly skill. and we think of Xavier in Blaineville-Bois-Briand. But Ryan Lynn, you have in it four. What should we know about the Vancouver Giants? Well, he's not a giant, but the Vancouver Giants defensemen. I don't know what it is with the Vancouver Giants and their best players not being very tall. But, hey, I like it.
Starting point is 00:52:34 Like, you know, Cameron Schmidt last year, that was a lot of fun to watch. Brendan, Gallagher. Brennan Gallagher, exactly. But, yeah, when it comes to Ryan Lynn, like, just what an incredibly smart defenseman. and I got to see him up close at the U-17 World Championship last year and again, most recently in Oakville at the U-18 Hulinka selection camp and just the way he thinks the game, the way he joins the rush, the way he's so elusive with the puck.
Starting point is 00:52:59 There's so many things that you look for in the modern-day defensemen. You look at the guys like the Kail McCars, the Quinn Hughes, the Adam Fox, and Lane Hudson's. The guys who have so much confidence rushing the puck, you see that in Ryan Lynn. And you compare him to Keaton-Verhoff. I think there's more individual skill. Ryan Lynn. But he's not six or four. And I think that's where that kind of pushes him down. But I think if he falls outside of the top five, it's because he either had a horrible
Starting point is 00:53:24 year somehow offensively in the WHL, which I don't see happening. I expect him to play all situations. Or teams are looking at the fact that there were no 5 foot 11 defense been drafted last year. And they're sticking to that and they're not taking a chance. And I think you can look at a guy like Zach Jones, who had a lot of talent, a lot of skill in college. Not a big guy, not a great skater. I think that's been his downfall. If Ryan Lynn, he makes up for it. He's got good skating.
Starting point is 00:53:48 I think he's going to be just electric to watch. So I'm a big Ryan Lynn fan. And I got to talk to him actually at that can to the camp. Probably one of my favorite players to talk to. That guy, just good personality, just happy. Okay. I love Chase Reed's story. At this time last year, and he's a right shot at the fence and plays with the
Starting point is 00:54:07 Sue Greyhounds, he'll be a first round pick. The only question is how high can he get? at this time last year he was scrapping and trying to get in the lineup in the NHL and now we're talking about him being a top 15 maybe a top 10 prospect in the NHL development is a weird thing and right now this guy is has like a rocket like a developmental rocket attached to his back what should we know about Chase Reed it's a great story so yeah yeah it was really surprising that he wasn't able to go to there and be this, this really high-end player in the NAHL.
Starting point is 00:54:43 Like, you'll look at it, most guys in their draft minus one year with a legit shot of going to the NHL, if they are not going to the OHL, WHL, QMJL, they're going to the U.S.HL. So for him to go to the NAHL, it's definitely a bit surprising there. And, hey, I fully expect him to be in the hunt to play for the United States of the World Juniors this year. We'll see. They don't have a ton of great defensemen to choose from.
Starting point is 00:55:08 but watching him play a couple games in the NAHL. It looked like he lacked confidence. And confidence is one of the most supportive things any player in this age group can't have. And it didn't look like he had any. Goes to the OHL, gets an opportunity to play a big role right off the bat. I don't recall the context of why he played so many minutes right off the bat, but he went out there and just looked so good. He put up over a point per game,
Starting point is 00:55:31 which is very difficult for a defenseman to do, let alone in their draft minus one year. And he has an 07 in a draft dominated by 08. but it's a late 07 so we're still treating him like that and I think that with him just so like he's he's so mobile he's got the size at six foot two he's got a great shot if he puts it together every night he's going to be so lethal and I know he's kind of had a quiet start offensively but you still see everything that made him so good last year which is those those play reads the physicality I think has improved a little bit and just the way he goes out defensively and gives you nothing to work with yeah a couple moments left with you I want to get a thought just because he had a big weekend and a big Saturday night with five points against against the Sudbury Wolves. Caleb Malhotra, the son of Manny Malhotra, with the brand for Bulldogs. Now, the Bulldogs were an absolute wagon this year. Let's look like him and them and the Windsor Spitfires are going to sort of flip-flop for tops in the OHL. I know Kitchener will have
Starting point is 00:56:29 something to say about that. But nonetheless, a thought on Caleb Malhotra, who, you know, even before the season, people are saying, you know what, he's probably a second round pick, Maybe he gets into the first round. You've got him in the first round right off the hop. Your thoughts on Caleb Malhotra, Mani's son with the Bulldogs. He's a very solid all-around player. And I remember watching him with Vaughn Kings a couple years ago. And he was a point per game player, but nothing like too explosive,
Starting point is 00:56:57 nothing that made you think potential first round NHL player. But the work ethic was always there. Like he was always battling. He was playing the penalty kill. He was winning face off. He was doing everything out there to, win the shift in which given who his dad was I don't think is too much of a surprise this is a guy that's got a good work ethic because of it and watching him playing chiloac last year it felt like he wasn't
Starting point is 00:57:19 shooting much he was almost nervous at points he was trying to give the puck up more to his teammates but for a guy that put up a lot of goals the year before it was a bit surprising so I still don't think he's going to be a goal scored in the NHL but he's taking shots he's getting those opportunities and he's really good as a playmaker he can make great plays at speed when he's standing still like there's just so many elements of his game where even if he doesn't continue on this 181 point pace which i don't think he's going to end up finishing with this year um but i think that you're going to look at a guy that's still going to put up 70 80 points be a key part of this team that's going to go far in the o hl playoffs maybe compete for the memorial cup and i think that
Starting point is 00:57:58 it takes a lot of the responsibility away from someone like jaco brian the seattle prospect to go out there and try and dominate and then all of a sudden mouholtra showing everybody that he's just this all-around threat that works hard. I think people are really going to come around to him very quickly. Don't disagree. Let me close by asking you about someone who actually didn't make your list and has just been tearing up the Western Hockey League, and that's J.P. Hurlbert.
Starting point is 00:58:27 So he is a product of the Dallas Stars Youth League and is playing now for a team that's owned by, the Dallas Stars owner in the Cam Loops Blazers, you see where I'm going with this one. What do you think of this guy? I mean, he's sort of shown up and taken the Western Hockey League by Storm. I would imagine at some point
Starting point is 00:58:51 we're going to have to entertain more of an idea about Herbert, Hurlbert, being a first-round pick. Yeah, and actually I did have him in my initial rankings back in July. And obviously, the one thing I try to not do was get too excited about the hype of a couple game, you know, sample size.
Starting point is 00:59:09 I do. Oh, come on, man. It's fun, right? You know, it's fun. Caleb Malta, pretty similar numbers in three games, right? For me, of Hurlbert, it's like, I had a hard time taking him out. I just, there's a few guys. It's just a bit more size, a bit more of that all-the-round hardworking ethic.
Starting point is 00:59:27 I just had to put in there, but I don't expect that, I expect him to be in the first-round conversation, no question as long as he keeps on with the numbers he is. I know he's a big, Colton Davies is a huge. fan of him so shout out to colton in the chat but um you know i i watching him a lot at the ntdp last year there are points where it felt like he could disappear at points we're not seeing that right now and as long as that continues where i wouldn't be surprised if he's top 15 top 15 i wouldn't be surprised i wouldn't be surprised at all that that's that's a dude to plays of a ton of skill like like just he's he does the cross goals like it's nothing and i love that so um just
Starting point is 01:00:04 make sure you have them in there by November. So Tom Galardi, the owner of the Dallas Stars, has enough time to get you on his Christmas card list, which for people like Tom, they like to send out early in December. Stephen, great stuff. Everyone, check it out, daily faceoff.com. Stephen Ellis's top 40 prospects,
Starting point is 01:00:22 one of the initial reports coming out of the office of Stephen Ellis. Thanks so much for stopping by, as always, pal. You'd be good. I do need to say one more thing. You guys are talking about fights. You guys were talking about fights earlier, of Jay Rosso. I believe we may have mentioned it once.
Starting point is 01:00:37 We need way more goalie fights than hockey. I don't know why we don't get this. Like the two guys who are never talking to each other at any point in the game, I want to see those guys fight more off. We're in the back of goalies. Let's see those guys fight. You know, it's an interesting, it's an interesting phenomenon when it happens because it essentially looks like it's two Michelin men trying to scrap.
Starting point is 01:00:58 You know, like there are very few. I remember like Billy Smith would fight players. Okay, like we've seen goalies fight goalies. I'm always interesting than goalies that'll fight players. Billy Smith would fight players. My favorite goalie fight that I ever saw was the late Ray Emery in the American League playing for Binghamton. You know where I'm going, fighting Josh Gratton. And Josh Gratton, for those that don't remember Josh Gratton, it wasn't as if Ray Emery was just picking like a fourth line guy who puts up 20 penalty.
Starting point is 01:01:29 Josh Gratton was like legit, tough guy for a lot of years. And that's the guy that Ray Emery went at. He was one of the toughest Sean Burke was always super tough. Listen, Felix Podfan, just asked Rod Hextall, how tough he was. Dwayne, Dwayne Rollison, Ben Bishop. I think we're all still waiting for Jordan Bennington to finally get it out of his system and have one. I would love it if the St. Louis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes met in the Stanley Cup final. and we saw Binnington versus Cachetcoff.
Starting point is 01:02:05 Can you tell I've thought about this, Stephen Ellis? That would be my dream goalie fight right now in the NHL. I don't know if you've gone as far as to figure out a dream goalie fight. To me, it's Cachetcoff and Bennington. I don't know if you have one sort of knocking around the back of your brain there. I just, anybody, I want back of goalies to fight because I think that would be hilarious. Oh, or get two e-bikes, go get like David Ayers and Jed Alexander fighting each other. There is a great, oh, there's a, so there's a great, this is like from 19, God, I'm going geeky on you.
Starting point is 01:02:37 Zach, see if you can find the picture of Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks Brawl, and it's Gary Smith fighting, who is, it's Gary Smith fighting Bobby Taylor, right? And it's in the middle of a brawl. Right now, Zach is really scrambling. I really want you to see this picture. It's Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks Brawl, Smith versus, oh, it's such a great moment,
Starting point is 01:03:09 and it's such a wonderful picture. They're right in the middle of all of these players, and the great part about it was, and everyone's sort of like, everyone's off and everyone's watching. It's Bobby Taylor and Gary Smith. And the best part about the brawl,
Starting point is 01:03:28 Those two guys were the backup goalies. Those guys were not the starters. That was in the middle of the brawl to what you're talking about, Stephen. These two backup goaltenders are saying, we're going for it. And it is one of, for my money, one of the best hockey pictures I've ever seen. I don't know this. I don't know this. Are you seeing the picture on Google Images right now?
Starting point is 01:03:53 I'm looking for it. And I know that I remember just he looked menacing when he played for this. is there you go there it is those are the two backup goalies and all they get like a bill look at bill clement and rick mcleash go like what's going on you up in the top left corner you got bobby clark going these are the backup goaltenders how do they have beef here tom bladen is there barry ashby kelly hound oh man this is a a beautiful picture here yeah those are the two backup goalies there zach great job put you on the spot good job man those the two backups pal so do what you're talking about there it is vancouver of philadelphia
Starting point is 01:04:31 i can't believe that happened yeah it's good man you brought it up not me you're the ones fixated on goalies fighting i don't know man weirdo okay anyway thanks stephen we'll talk soon pal thanks so much he is a one of the best people at uh ranking prospects and evaluating prospects and has a love for goalie fights the one and only stephen ellis zach bravo Oh, great job finding that picture. Have you ever seen that picture before? No, I haven't. That was a little bit of a battle trying to make sure I could get a quality enough picture that we could show on here.
Starting point is 01:05:09 Well, we got it. So I'm glad we did. I'm glad he did. That's a great picture. That's so funny. Bye with the Chief Taylor. Bye with the Chief Taylor. All right.
Starting point is 01:05:18 Let's wrap things up here on the program. There are some exhibition games. Sorry, preseason games around the NHL this evening. Maybe a couple of notes on there in a couple of moments. In the meantime, the sheet is powered by. by Fanduel. Fanduel is home of the same game parlay, make every moment more on Fandual.
Starting point is 01:05:32 Fanduel is proud to connect fans to the major sports moments that matter to them. What do you got? Okay. There is a ton of new markets that are being put up on Fanduel as we go day by day by day
Starting point is 01:05:47 and get closer to the start of the season. This is one that I just saw in here. It's player milestones that are going up. So there's a bunch of different ways you could bet on this one over at Fanduel if you wanted to get involved. in this whether it be players to record 100 110 plus 120 plus whatever it is that you're looking for on fan dual points goals all that one stood out to me here jeff and it was players to score
Starting point is 01:06:11 60 plus goals this season so there's three players who are listed right now on fan duel do you want to do you want to guess who those three players would be that they would even bother putting odds up for on fan do yeah i'll tell you exactly what they're three okay leon John Drysidal, Austin Matthews, David Pasternak. Correct. Those are the three. Okay. Of which, of which, I think Leon Dreisel is the only one that has a shot.
Starting point is 01:06:39 I really think that given the nature of Austin Matthews' health and the issues that he will probably have to fight for his entire career, if you're a fan of Austin Matthews, you might have to park the, he's going to get 60 every year thoughts. Dave Pasternak. I think that that's fair. David Pasternak, as much as I love him, we all love him, just lethal. I just don't know who's getting him the puck. That's the problem I have here, too. But I'll take Tricelyt. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:14 I can see that. He just wrecked, and again, I know it's an exhibition game, but do you see him just like wrecked the Vancouver Canucks yesterday? He was sitting on everything. It was freaking ridiculous. That three, the goal they scored off the draw and three seconds on the power play. She's like, bing, bing, bing, bing, and Leon Baries it. You know what?
Starting point is 01:07:36 Even if Connor McDavid goes somewhere else. Hey, Nick Alberg, I look in your direction. If Connor McDavid goes somewhere else, which I don't think that he will. Edmonton's going to be okay. Pretend to forget how great Leon Dreisdell is. Yeah, if I'm picking one, to me, to me, this one is party of one. If anyone's scoring 60, it's Leon Dreisdell. what do you think okay yeah no i i would agree with you the health of matthews and then who the hell is
Starting point is 01:08:04 getting past an act of puck those are big issues there um i will i will ask you this and i'm putting you on the spot but i thought of one so i can meander around this if you want is there a player in the league i'm not saying you're projecting that they will do this but is there a player in the league because there's only three guys listed here is there somebody that you would sit there and go if it all connects and it all works that guy could explode for 60s there because like we're only a tight list here with these three guys Andre's fetching I got one no no no you know I was going to say Andre sweptenkov um I knew you that was the one you would say yes you know how's the potential to do it tage Thompson Tage Thompson that was the one I had that was oh is he your
Starting point is 01:08:56 choice too yeah yes tage tage thompson of the buffalo savers um i think if everything would be an interesting one i think if everything breaks right um would it surprise anybody if cole coffield went off for 60 it's a jump i get it it's it's a jump but like we're talking about like a team that's really on on the rise and yeah a player that has the ability I don't know. That's another player I'd consider. Far more of a jump.
Starting point is 01:09:34 But, yeah, Tage is the one I have there. Jason Robertson, I could see it kind of all coming back together and then him getting things back on track and being a guy who could do that as well. By the way, NYU Boost in the chat, if Tage gets 60 the Sabres will somehow still find a way to miss the playoffs. I look if that happens if he gets 60 and they miss the playoffs that's that's that's got to be the end of the road you'd assume sorry how about your boy willie nielander he's going to get more opportunities he will he's a guy that I look this is where it's kind of one of those weird situations where I would say no to one but yes to another was would be I don't know that he would put up 60 but I could see him being being the guy who could win the rocket,
Starting point is 01:10:28 it would just require everybody else to not get 60. Do you know what I mean? Like, I don't know if he's in 60 territory, but. Did you watch his first show, by the way, on YouTube? Yeah, I liked it. I thought it was well done. I thought it was good. I thought it was well shot.
Starting point is 01:10:43 I thought it was well edited. And that is a guy that is very, very comfortable being naked everywhere. Everywhere. I mean, if I looked like that, so would I probably. I am going benchside with my dad To complain about the laundry They could In my gitch
Starting point is 01:11:07 Just like tiny little dry fits Like that and that's it Yeah I like it though I'm happy that this is happening with these guys Yeah Grow the brand Get let people in a little bit more
Starting point is 01:11:21 Yeah He's he's the guy for Toronto Joey DeCord, over to you. Big Willys, big willies out there. Big Willies out there and underwear is so tight you can see. Based on the videos, he's putting on. Yeah, you could, you can tell what religion Nylander is. Over to you, Decord.
Starting point is 01:11:43 What are you out there wearing on your YouTube channel? Got to get those. fuse up Joey. Oh shit what's Willie doing? Oh crap sorry hon I gotta go do this for work Willie's running around one run around the bench in Sweden naked
Starting point is 01:12:05 here I am talking about the reverse VH does it could work okay let's wrap the show on that one yeah good job reviews on my YouTube good job good job good job what else we got the chat
Starting point is 01:12:24 about that what he got about Willie. Shirtless Willie photo to put behind Merrick. I'm down. There you go. Screen grab. Put up above or beside the chimp or the Alan Waltz quote back there. I'm down with that one.

I'm not against those methods, but I knew. It's me, myself. and how this is going to be fixed in my mind.
Starting point is 01:14:27 I do on the bracket. I turned on the music. I do want to back. Yeah. I'm doing on the music. Bixing up, I don't bet you're sometimes losing. I've been on the day that's that we're wrong.
