The Sheet with Jeff Marek - Struck Oil ft. Pierre McGuire & Sam Dickinson

Episode Date: June 5, 2025

On this episode of The Sheet, Jeff Marek is live from Southern Tier Brewing Co. in downtown Buffalo and joined by Pierre McGuire to break down a wild Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, where the Edmonto...n Oilers stormed back to beat the Florida Panthers in overtime. The guys also dig into a busy week of coaching news around the NHL, including the Boston Bruins hiring Marco Sturm, the Pittsburgh Penguins bringing in Dan Muse, and David Quinn’s return to New York. Plus, they take a look ahead to the NHL Draft and the decisions facing teams at the top of the board. Later, Sam Dickinson of the London Knights stops by to talk about capturing the Memorial Cup, his experience playing in London, and what’s next for him on his hockey journey.#StanleyCupFinal #Oilers #Panthers #NHLPlayoffs #JeffMarek #PierreMcGuire #MarcoSturm #BostonBruins #DanMuse #PittsburghPenguins #DavidQuinn #NHLDraft #SamDickinson #MemorialCup #LondonKnights #TheSheet #SouthernTier #HockeyTalk #NHLNews #HockeyProspectsShout out to our sponsors!👍🏼 Fan Duel: https://www.fanduel.com/👍🏼Ninja Kitchen Canada: https://www.ninjakitchen.ca/products/ninja-crispi-4-in-1-portable-glass-air-fryer-cooking-system-zidFN101CGY?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=olv&utm_campaign=25Q2-Crispi&utm_content=en👍🏼Budweiser: https://www.budweiser.ca/ca_enReach out to sales@thenationnetwork.com to connect with our Sales Team and discuss opportunities to partner with us!If you liked this, check out:🚨 OTT - Coming in Hot Sens | https://www.youtube.com/c/thewallyandmethotshow🚨 TOR - LeafsNation | https://www.youtube.com/@theleafsnation401🚨 EDM - OilersNation | https://www.youtube.com/@Oilersnationdotcom🚨 VAN - CanucksArmy | https://www.youtube.com/@Canucks_Army🚨 CGY - FlamesNation | https://www.youtube.com/@Flames_Nation🚨 Daily Faceoff Fantasy & Betting | www.youtube.com/@DFOFantasyandBetting____________________________________________________________________________________________Connect with us on ⬇️Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/daily_faceoff💻 Website: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com🐦 Follow on twitter: https://x.com/DailyFaceoff💻 Follow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dailyfaceoffDaily Faceoff Merch:https://nationgear.ca/collections/daily-faceoff Hosted on Acast. Man have I ever been here about a million times. You know as much as I grew up going to Maple Leaf Gardens to watch Toronto Maple Leafs games,
Starting point is 00:02:32 I used to watch a ton of hockey games at the old odd. Been to the Key Bank a number of times, combine here, the Harbour Centre. It's just a great hockey town and that's why I say the same thing at the beginning of every year. I don't cheer for teams. I don't have a dog in the fight. I am, as I've told you before, I am hockey agnostic. I just want the Buffalo Sabres to be good. I just want the Sabres to be good. We are, by the way, the Southern Tier Brewing Company just outside the Harbour Centre. Well, at the foot of the Harbour Centre across from the KeyB to be good. We are by the way the Southern tier brewing company just outside the Harbour Center, well at the foot of the Harbour Center across the
Starting point is 00:03:06 McKee Bank Center here, home of the 2025 NHL draft combine. But the first thing we got to mention before we get to our first guest and that's Pierre Maguire and our daily outline, if that's gonna be the Stanley Cup final give me seven games of it. You know some seasons where by the time you get to the Stanley Cup final, the guys are all beaten up and they're exhausted and they're tired. The gravity of the games means a lot.
Starting point is 00:03:34 And the action is, obviously not as good as it is in the first round and maybe not as good as it is in the second round either. But you give it grace because these guys are all banged up if they're not injured they're at least hurt all of them by this time and the hockey sometimes isn't that great. Now there were sloppy moments last night make no mistake about it there was some some ring tilting going on at various times in the in the game and some sloppy plays but overall for a Stanley Cup final that was an absolute banger. We're gonna get into
Starting point is 00:04:05 this and we're gonna welcome a Memorial Cup champion to the program as well. We're gonna begin with our update here, Daily Outline presented and powered by FanDuel. Make every moment more with North America's number one sports book. That is FanDuel, our presenter and our friends. And joining me here in a couple of moments on the program to go through what's been a really newsy day around the the NHL. Pierre Mcguire is gonna stop by in a couple of seconds here. Also, Sam Dickinson of the the Memorial Cup champion London Knights will be here. We're gonna talk a lot about the playoffs. We're gonna talk about the combine and
Starting point is 00:04:43 funny story story I just earlier this morning talking to someone who was telling me what one of the teams was asking some of the prospects you know how you always wondering or the questions to try to try to trip up all the prospects Brian Burke would always always used to tell me when he did interviews with the prospects you'd always ask them what kind of watch they have and they didn't want to say a watch that was too expensive because it didn't want to seem like little you know entitled hockey players and they didn't want to say it was a watch that was too
Starting point is 00:05:13 cheap because they didn't want to sound like they were impoverished he also asked them what kind of dogs they liked and nobody wanted to say they liked any of the small dogs anyhow we're gonna talk about coaching news we're gonna talk about the combine here and we'll do more on the combine tomorrow. In the meantime, let's welcome to the program our first guest. He is no stranger to this broadcast or other broadcasts, whether TV, digital, radio, podcasts. You know him, you love him. We know him, we love him. He is the great Pierre Maguire and he joins me now.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Pierre, greetings from Buffalo. One of my favorite towns. Have you been to Chef's yet? I have not been to Chef's. I was always that, you know what? I was, I'll tell you, walking down here to Southern Tier Brewing Company, I was dismayed to find the old watering hole
Starting point is 00:05:59 I used to go to all the time. Washington Square has now burned down, and I had to stop and I had to pause and had a little moment you know if I had one I'd pour one out for Washington Square it is no more but tell me about Chef's because Gabriel's Gate was always a big one for me too. Well Gabriel's Gate was where on Friday nights both teams would get together after the traditional 8 o'clock start in Buffalo at the old bot. So we'd go in there when I was coaching in Hartford and all of a sudden Rob Gray would start to
Starting point is 00:06:26 show up and Brad May, it starts to show up and all my tough times, we're going to have to go again now. So those were the times in Buffalo, especially Gabriel's Gate, the most underrated wings of the national hockey league. Chefs is just around the corner from where you are right now. It's an amazing Italian restaurant. We've been there forever. The French Connection guys ate there.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Lindy Ruffco is there along. Scotty Bowman introduced me to that restaurant probably 35 years ago. Chef's is a legendary place, Bob. I wanna get more Buffalo talking here with you in a couple of seconds. I wanna get some combine talking with you here in a couple of seconds as well.
Starting point is 00:07:02 But we gotta start off with what we saw last night. I mean, as far as a game one, that was an absolute banger and we got bonus hockey and we almost got two periods of bonus hockey, but Leon Dreissel had other ideas. Dreissel was outstanding. The Oilers depth scoring really came through. I am, Pierre, I am amazed. Like I sent someone in the Oilers a note this morning,
Starting point is 00:07:23 who's that guy wearing the Kaepernick jersey? Kasperi Kaepernick looks so different right now with the Edmonton Oilers, all of his previous teams, the Penguins, the Maple Leafs are saying, where was that guy? I don't know what it is, what they have in the water in Edmonton because Kasperi Kaepernick looks like a different dude.
Starting point is 00:07:38 What were your main takeaways from last night? The Oilers grab a one-nothing series lead. Well, Stuart Skinner in the second period was definitely an important moment, the game. I thought Stuart was tremendous in the second period. I was really worried about the crowd when they were down 3-1 in Edmonton. Boy, it was really quiet in there. And then the Arvidsson goal kind of woke everybody up. I thought that was great. But the thing that stood out to me way under the radar, I'm surprised. I've been on a bunch of shows today, Jeff, and you would pay attention to this. I know you're a,
Starting point is 00:08:08 Evander Kane had nine hits in that game last night. Evander Kane out Florida Panthers, the Florida Panthers. Buy him stuff. That can't continue. So I would imagine he'll be a targeted player going into game two by Florida. That's usually how they hold their game and be their business, which is fine. That's all part of it. And Evander's not going to melt two by Florida. That's usually how they hold their game and do their business, which is fine. That's all part of it. And Evander's not going to melt and go away. But what really stood out to me was going in, I said this to a bunch, again, a bunch of different shows.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Florida cannot be at 10 penalty minutes per game because that was their average pretty much over the course of playoffs. But yesterday they were at eight. The last powerplay killed them. The Nocek took over the glass, killed them. So I'm not taking anything away from Edmonton. I thought they were great, but when it was 3-1 and that crowd was out of it, I was worried. I have no idea. Can I throw a goofy idea your way, and maybe you've heard something like this before, and feel free to just laugh it off and say next question.
Starting point is 00:09:07 I'm watching the game last night and NoSick fires it over the glass and I'm like, oh, you just know what he feels like, you know what the Panthers feel like, and here we go, this Oilers power play starts clicking, you know, they overextend to the wall and it's tick tick tick tick tick tick goal. The puck over the glass is the automatic, but I look at the quality of ice late in a period and the quality of ice was pretty poor by that point. The ice can be a contributing factor when you fire the puck over.
Starting point is 00:09:33 I know there's no such thing as a one minute penalty, but I'm not a big fan of the puck over glass called to begin with, but if someone proposed puck over glass is in two minutes, it's one minute, what would Pierre Maguire say? First of all, I'd say yes, sign me up for that. I remember when puck over glass was called delay of game. And I remember being at his game in full form when Steve Schutt on the great Canadian's
Starting point is 00:10:00 teams when he wore number 22, shot the puck up and out of the arena from the neutral zone and he got a penalty to lay a game, went for putting the puck over the glass. Let me just ask you this. I like your idea, but I have another one. That's just like the embastopol when you're in the lane, you can't stay guarding in the lane for more than three seconds. It's a three second violation.
Starting point is 00:10:31 So what happens if you gave them, you get two pucks over glass, the entire game. The third one was a penalty or whatever you want to say. It could be one puck over the glass. You get a freebie. It then the next time you did the penalty. Cause I, I thought, Tom, you watched that and you watched it like I did. Amash Nosik didn't do that on purpose. He did not. No, and listen, the lion's share of these puck over glass calls are not on purpose. Maybe the argument is before we had this automatic two minutes, guys would fire it out under pressure, don't want to get the ice and be able to have a
Starting point is 00:11:03 line change. Guys would just fire the puck over the glass. I felt awful for Nosek last night. Like I felt just terrible for him. Cause to your point, he's not trying to do that. And I'll tell you what, Pierre, one final note on this. We'll get back to the game from last night. You and I really thought what happened with the automatic puck over the glass.
Starting point is 00:11:23 I thought we'd see a lot of guys just bluntly, even though it's dangerous, firing the puck in the bench. Yeah. But he was in a position where... Yeah, no, I agree with that. I remember coaching in the game and one of the players in our bench said something untoward to Mario Lemire. You know, I was his former pool.
Starting point is 00:11:44 So Mario's a right hand shot and the face off is right at the thought by our bench. And instead of him trying to win the flu plop, he gets it and just rifles it on our bench. He'll cut some of the whole bench. That'll be about enough. That'll keep it. That'll quiet everybody down. Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned Evander Kane a second ago because I talked to someone in Edmonton before game one and we're talking about Zach Hyman being out of the lineup.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And, you know, Hyman is, you know, triple digits and hits. He started the playoffs just by smashing everything that moved. A lot of the players on that, all those teams, specifically the fourth line did that, but Hyman was after everybody. He was after everybody, LA, Vegas. He was going after everybody in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:12:28 And without him, I was like, okay, so how does that, how does that affect you guys? You're going to be facing off against the Florida Panthers. You're a really aggressive team. Um, and he's, and this person I talked to said, yeah, you know what? This, this, this is where Evander Kane has to calm everyone down on the Florida Panthers and to your point, that you saw in that first game last night. The other thing, which is interesting,
Starting point is 00:12:52 maybe not interesting, but noteworthy, what did you make of the Sam Bennett call, the no goalie interference? I'm always stunned by how really big, strong, tough hockey players go down easier when there's blue ice, there's blue paint on the ice. He did. I'm not gonna argue that,
Starting point is 00:13:13 but I also know there was contact. So I don't know where his upper body was, but I do know this, the goalie union got together pretty quick, Jeff. All the ones who always, like, I can't believe that's a football Jeff. It was all new once, whoa. He's like, that's a cool goal. I was listening to all these different guys, and you know what, I respect them all.
Starting point is 00:13:30 So I'm never gonna say anything negative about it, but you watch what happens. Kulak skates gonna come in, all right? Yeah. Yeah. And so he might be trying to bottle for ice. We don't know where his balance point is talking about Bennett.
Starting point is 00:13:42 So that's the only thing. It's the left skate into the right state of Bennett where I think he's trying to do it accidentally on purpose. Probably. Then it was outstanding last night too. Like there's the, there's that that's certainly the, the, the flash point play for Sam Bennett, but like this guy is telling you why this guy's making the case why there's going to be someone out there on July 1st that might offer this guy double digits.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Like we could be looking at a 10 considering how the cap is going up and considering everybody wants to trade for players and sign players and even draft players that are playoff style players. Is it beyond the pale that he might get $10 million per year? Oh, it takes one team. Why not? They know they're negotiating against Florida. So if you really want the player to buy nothing, you think you're close enough to getting done. Why not? Caps going up, comfortable quick. You're a cap is, you know, the other thing about the game last night, this, I know everybody's stating the obvious, Connor McBaddeck he's had another bubble he's just he's
Starting point is 00:14:51 had 52 bowls this year you know those are his first two bowls in the game they kept flying all he did go in last year you all know that but I'm watching him and it's just what he's doing away from the puck so much better and. Just totally different than that. And you know, it's interesting too, and even McDavid talked about this post game last night. Right away, the first thing that all the oldest guys want to talk about is playing defense. Like you can ask Connor any question.
Starting point is 00:15:17 You know, we used to play this game where you pretend to be Phil Esposito and you ask any question and by the end of the answer, he's talking about 72 again. The thing with Connor McDavid now is Connor McDavid, every answer he gives, he always brings it back to, and we can defend. And that's what they're taking pride in.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And you see it with everybody. You see it with Pod Coleson, you see it with Kasperi Kapanen, you see it with every single player on this team is committed to playing that side of the puck now. And, Pierre, does it not just seem to me, but also to you that they're going out of their way to point that out to everybody? Well, they're going out of their way to point it out.
Starting point is 00:15:55 There's no question. I think there were less of snoring last year. And when they lost the four, they were down three, nothing. They come back, they lose game seven. It's the heartbreak and they know they have to play defense where you can get over the hump. But what's interesting, you talked about Coles in a particular, Casperi, Kaepernick, Dry Saddle who I was talking about. I'll talk about a Vander Kane. I'll talk about Adam Henry, all the guys you know besides McDavid and Dry Saddle. Here's a thing that I
Starting point is 00:16:21 think is interesting, Jeff, about it. All those other players don't really have to score because they know they got enough scoring up front It's what they do and they're not scoring that's making them valuable Evander had nine hits last night. He was valuable. He didn't go out those marks. He went out there and Florida New Year was in the game. And I just think that they've learned they learned it now Just gonna be an easy series to win. No, I don't think it's going to be for everything. I still think Forrest Fett way better. I was shocked. I don't know how you felt about it, Jeff. In the third period last night, I was shocked to see so few tape to tape passes from the Florida defense to the Florida forwards. I was shocked. Yeah, they were having a hard time, but that's it. Like,
Starting point is 00:17:03 Yeah, they were having a hard time, but that's it. Like, Knoblock has these, like strategically, I love how Knoblock has his team playing. You know, he has like a set group and usually it involves Adam and Rick that goes out there almost as if just to absorb punishment. Like get out there and be the boxer on the ropes and just take it, you know, body shot, body shot, body shot, body shot. And then comes right back with McDavid or Dry Settle. Like right away, quickly, almost instantly, bam. But it's just like go out there and take punishment
Starting point is 00:17:34 and tire them out because Connor and Leon are coming out next. So a final thought on this series, I wanna get to some news. A final thought here on what you see Nablok doing with this team. A lot, but I also think Mark Stewart Paul coffee when Gullitzen all those guys deserve a lot of credit This is coaching by committee. You look at the improved defense, especially from Evan Bouchard
Starting point is 00:17:54 I think a lot of that's Paul. I think a lot of that's Mark Stewart. You look at the power play I think a lot of that's blend and you can see how calm cool and collected Chris's and I think that's how the players are in front of him. There's no panic on that bench. Compared to a year ago or a year and a half ago, it's way different. So I think Chris has done a great job identifying who can trust on his staff and the responsibilities they have to have. And I think he's done a great job on the chunk of running his bench.
Starting point is 00:18:19 So well done by him. Game two goes Friday. And if game two is ending like game one, bring it on. I won seven games of this. That was a lot of fun. Um, Marco Sturm, uh, we talked about, um, Marco Sturm a couple of weeks ago, you and I, and you spoke glowingly about, um, not just his work in the AHL, uh, but also at the Olympics.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Um, you know, I spoke with one of his, one of his former teammates, uh, one of his former players when he coached in Ontario on the way over to the restaurant here today. And I said, what's the one thing I should know about Marco Sturm the coach? And he said, Marco Sturm as a coach, coaches like he plays. His big thing is consistency,
Starting point is 00:18:58 whether it's consistency through a day, consistency through a shift, consistency through a game. He said one of the hardest things when he first took over as the head coach coming from the assistant coaching position is he couldn't understand why players weren't as consistent a player as he was. You have to be a great player, but you have to get yourself into the habit of doing the same things every single time
Starting point is 00:19:23 you show up to the gym, you get on the ice, you go to practice, that was Marco Sturm. He said that's one of the things he's bringing to Boston. Your thoughts on Marco Sturm, new head coach of the B's. The late John Ferguson was a real good friend and a special person in the hockey world. And I remember when he was in San Jose and Marco was playing there,
Starting point is 00:19:42 we used to talk about Marco's consistency, which is funny that you would bring this up because we don't rehearse this show. They say this guy is so consistent. I'll use the Scotty Bowman mechanism of don't be an A player one night and a D player the next. Be a solid B every night and you'll be trusted by the coaches. That's what Marco Stern was.
Starting point is 00:20:00 He wasn't an A every night and he wasn't a C every night. He was just a B every night. And you knew where you were getting. I think if we were to talk to most of the Boston Bruins players, Jeff, they would tell you the same thing. I played with him. Fantastic teammate, very consistent. You know where you're getting night in and night out and the coaches trust him. His records, it's impeccable. It really is. It's unimpeachable. Here's what I loved about Marco. I'll never forget. They lost the gold medal in Pyeongchang. I was there. I broadcast the game.
Starting point is 00:20:30 You didn't get mad. You didn't get angry. You didn't get cranky. I think it was a celebration of German hockey. If it hadn't been for Kareel Kaprizov, they would have won the gold medal. It was a lacing call. Then a Sidenbergs brother iced the puck. Russians win the faceoff, puck goes
Starting point is 00:20:45 in and then then Karey Okoforisov takes over the game and they win the gold medal. But I texted with Marko afterwards and I was blown away by how calm, how positive he was, how important it was for German hockey and how much fun he had being at that Olympic game. That just speaks to what that player told you. He's a great communicator, he's a great person. I think he's the perfect guy right now for the Boston Roads. This player also told me that even though he was the head coach, he would do the assistant's
Starting point is 00:21:16 job sometime of going out there, staying after practice, even just to work on things like getting the puck to the front of the net, like over and over and over and over again. Um, so the Bruins get their guy. Uh, what team, like what's your thought on the Bruins team that he's getting here? Like we think of all like the, the marquee names, David Pasternak and Jeremy Swainman and Charlie
Starting point is 00:21:40 McEvoy, like there are key players at key positions, like superstars at a lot of positions, Hampus Lindholm, throw him into the mix there as positions. Like superstars at a lot of positions, Hampus, Lindholm, throw him into the mix there as well. Um, but what is he getting here? Like what, what is he, what is he coaching now? Who do you think he's going to, you know, help the most? Like Marco Sturm helped Alex Turcotte, Sammy Helanius.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Like he helped these guys a ton in their career. Are there, are there a couple of guys on the Bruins peer that you look at and you say Marco Sturm is going to work really well with this guy. I think he's gonna work well with everybody. That's gonna be the biggest thing for them. Depends on what they do in the off season, but you know, Quatris is one of the guys who will see how it goes with Marco,
Starting point is 00:22:16 but you gotta think he's gonna help him a ton, because that's a kid that they're counting on. But I think Donnie Sweeney's got a long shop in what's this summer. You know, when you really look at it, Jeff, he's got a lot of work to do there. Especially, they're in a rough neighborhood. Buffalo should be better. You're right in Buffalo now. Montreal's not going away. Ottawa's not going away. I think Detroit's going to be a whack better. I don't think Tampa or Florida are going away. Toronto's not going away. So where does Boston fit?
Starting point is 00:22:43 I think you look at it, the last year anyways, not making the playoffs. And then if they would have another year missing the playoffs, I think that'd be a tough situation for anybody there. So I think it comes down to what Donnie does this summer. But I think Marco will do a good job communicating and making players better. Are we renaming the Rangers now?
Starting point is 00:23:04 To the New York Terriers to the New York Terriers? The New York Terriers? Yeah, you could think about that. David Quinn, I think that... Go ahead. Go ahead. Why don't you go? I was going to say just the news.
Starting point is 00:23:16 David Quinn and Joe Sacco, again, it's the BU bench at MSG. Your thoughts on what we saw this morning? It's going to be awkward for David. Going back, you know, he was a head coach. They didn't think it worked out very well. They weren't very nice on the way out, to tell you that. You're interested to see how it goes with him and Chris Drury. Now, contrary to public opinion, and just so everybody knows this, Chris Drury never played at BU. David Quinn with Mike Sullivan or with Joe Sacco. Trust me on that.
Starting point is 00:23:46 We own Sean McEachran. I was at BU a lot scouting. Chris Drury wasn't there. He wasn't there until 1994. So those guys were long on the rant to being professionals. So now that being said, there is a BU mafia in hockey and they're very, very loyal to one another. I think Mike's a great coach. I think Mike's always been a great job there.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Joe Sacco is a passing underrated coach. I think he'll do a real good job there. David Quinn's a really good coach. I just don't know how comfortable it's going to be for him to go back into that dressing room with a lot of the same players. Yeah. It's, it's a, it's a totally new, it's a different dynamic. And you're right.
Starting point is 00:24:22 Like not just from the coach's point of view as well, but from the player's point of view. Like that relationship now and all the baggage that came around from last time is all different. We'll see how that goes with the Rangers. Have about seven or eight minutes left with you here. So I wanna get a couple of things in. I wanna get in, I'm here in Buffalo,
Starting point is 00:24:43 Phoenix, I'll scout in Combine. So there's one team that I was told, who is, and we always wonder about the psychological evaluations that go into the interviews with the kids. And there is one team that at least with one prospect, I would imagine with all of them, we're using this as a sort of mental test, I suppose. They held up a picture, might've been a painting,
Starting point is 00:25:06 might've been a picture, of a person sitting in a chair in a wide open field and asked the player, what's the story, how did that person get there? Now, I like that they're paying more attention to everyone's mental health and how much that answer will reveal where you're at mentally, but I kind of looked at that one and went, hmm, well that's a different one. What are some of the more interesting questions you've heard as far as psychologically evaluating
Starting point is 00:25:39 prospects at the combine? Last one I ever heard was, are you a willow or an oak tree? And this one player, the answer was, sir, what's a wooded tree? So that was one wood I know. It's interesting that you're in Buffalo because in 1991, the draft was there. That was the great Eric Windrush draft. And I, you know, we had, I was very fortunate. We had just won the cup and we had the Stanley Cup in our meeting room, believe it or not. I don't know if they still do that or not, but we're quite into the prospects.
Starting point is 00:26:15 And brought in Tyler Wright from Smith Current to come in for an interview. And I can tell you point blank, in that draft anyways, he was the best interview by a mile. And we didn't ask any of those questions that you, or he was a tremendous interviewer. We didn't ask any of the questions, you know, you and I are kind of hooking up, are you a Willow or an Oatree,
Starting point is 00:26:38 or here's somebody sitting in a field, what do you think? We asked him about, what was it like to play in Swift current? What's the hardest bus ride you were ever on? Who's the best teammate you ever had? Why were you so hard to play against? Tell us about your relationships at home.
Starting point is 00:26:53 What was your relationship like with your coaching staff? He was so adult, so mature, so point on. He was such an impressive person. So we ended up taking Marcus Nasl in that draft. The Edmonton Oilers ended up taking Kyra Rhea, I think four, maybe six players before we got Marcus Nasl. The, um, one thing I wanted to, cause I've talked to three, maybe four people about this idea already.
Starting point is 00:27:24 And the more that I think about it, I really like it. And I guess it's gonna be stuck in my head now for a while. I've had three or four people talk to me. This is like either agents or scouts who have said, we do this all backwards here. He said, we do the actual combine at the end of the week, but the kids are here all week long. And they're going from interview to interview to interview, a number of different teams.
Starting point is 00:27:48 They're going out to dinner every night with teams, all in the back of their mind, they have this stress that this fitness evaluation is coming up. Meanwhile, they're going out every night for big steak dinners, et cetera. These people have said to me, why don't they do the actual combine part first and then do all that other stuff after? And then do all the interviews and then the steak dinners and schmoozing and all that, the interviews, do that after. But this way, if you do it at the beginning of the week,
Starting point is 00:28:16 you get the kids when they're fresh. Do you have a thought on that? Yeah, I totally agree with you. I couldn't agree any more. And I'm not sure you gotta do the dinners all the time. I think that should be reserved for maybe people that you have in the first and maybe the second round and then you can go forward from there. But no, I think they should be doing their training parts of it and the conditioning parts of it at the beginning of the week. And, you know, as you go along, maybe the first two
Starting point is 00:28:40 days or that and then the rest of the week is meet and greet. Yeah. One final thing here within the couple of minutes that I have left with you Pierre. I thought of one person specifically when I saw Brock Nelson's deal. So Brock Nelson resigns with the Colorado Avalanche three-year deal AAV at 7.5. Pierre, if Brock Nelson is three years, 7.5 million dollars, what's John Tavares? Yeah, that's a great question. That's going to be a little thorn in the side. And that's one of those, I know Brian Burke comes on, you said, remember when Burke and Kevin Lowe were supposed to be eating at the barn and have a fight?
Starting point is 00:29:16 In Lake Blossom. I think that's going to happen. He's doing tree loading in the barn. That's a test. You got to, that's a test. That's a comparable and that's a contract you're going to have to negotiate against, which makes it difficult. Now that being said, I think John does want to stay in Toronto and I think he's prepared not to look at other people's contracts within Roos. It is interesting.
Starting point is 00:29:42 I had a quick conversation related on this one because I don't know what the ultimate answer is interesting. I had a quick conversation with Linda on this one because I don't know what the ultimate answer is here. Because having a conversation with someone over coffee here in Buffalo and this person said to me, how much do you think Chicago gives Connor Bredard? Coming off his entry level deal, 23 goals this season, July 1st, he's eligible for his second contract. This person said, could you see Chicago doing 10? Now I'm like, I'm sure there's a lot of agents that would like, I would like
Starting point is 00:30:12 Bedard to do 10. Yeah. So, so let's just, comparables use Tim Stutzla. You know, go, go look at some of the other players that are, you know, play like that. And look where Tim Stutzla those numbers are close to 10. You know, and so that, yeah, I could see that 100%. Plus they've built everything around here. Connor Bedard is Irish, Chicago Blackhawks. He is Chicago Blackhawks right now. Now they have other good young players. You bet you they, they're one of those sleeping giants. and I can tell you right now Blaschel is an amazing communicator Jeff Blaschel new
Starting point is 00:30:47 coach there he'll do a good job and he was a tremendous coach in college he was a really good coach the American Occi League Grand Rapids and that's kind of I'm not saying they have a minor league team but what they have is a lot of young players like minor league teams too and I think he'll do a good job but on a regards on the guys he he'll do a good job but out of regards to one of the guys he has to do a really good job. Absolutely. On that we'll let you go. It's a busy day for you as always. Appreciate your time. Enjoy the rest of your day and we'll check back next week. I can't wait to talk to you. Contest available to Canadian residents only and will end on June the 6th at 1159 p.m. Eastern. This question today is a flat-out fun one. Zach, what do we got? So this one is My question is for both of you if you could have a dinner of four with one announcer One player and one coach or GM who would you each pick? Answers can be past or present warmest regards Matt from Boston. Matt in Boston. You got a new coach Have a sip of ginger ale.
Starting point is 00:35:45 Chewing on ice like Mike Keenan. Should have slowed that question down for you. Can you see it? I was having a sip. Throw it in the towel midway through the first round. Stop the fight. Okay, so one announcer, one player, one coach or GM? You have yours? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:02 Okay, so here's, let me throw mine out there. So my announcer, thinking that we're here in Buffalo, and one of the first hockey voices I remember listening to was Ted Darling. And it wasn't the original voice, I think he came in in the second year of existence for the Buffalo Sabres, so that would have been 7172. But Ted Darling would be the one announcer, I got to work with his son at Hockey Night in Canada, the great Joel Darling, but I always wanted and never did meet Ted.
Starting point is 00:36:32 Always would have loved to have met Ted just because I want to hear. You know, there's just some people that you just love being around them because you love the sound of their voice. Ted Darling was my guy. And I love that every time I go to Buffalo Sabres games, there's a Ted Darling media area guy and I love that every time I go to Buffalo Sabres games. There's a Ted Darling media area one player
Starting point is 00:36:49 The original biz nasty Before there was biz nasty there was gumpers Lee Gumpers Lee legendary netminder in the NHL whose book I recommend and it's long out of print and very expensive. If you can find it, I know, called They Call Me Gump, where he tells tales and names names and talks about guys that he didn't like. He's got a list on clubhouse lawyers, like all the guys that were like, Paula, take you behind your back.
Starting point is 00:37:19 He has a section on his favorite watering holes in every single market that he went to. Here's where I went drinking in LA. Here's where I went drinking in Buffalo. Here's where I went drinking in Minnesota. This is in the book. And then does talent evaluations and he's harsh, like scout harsh on teammates and people that he skated against. Gump doesn't hold back. I would love to talk to have been able to talk to that guy. As far as coaches or general managers, I mean every time we have Pierre McQuire on I always remind myself we got to get Scotty Bowman on the show. Scotty is like has seen everything, has done everything, has
Starting point is 00:38:00 been part of everything. If you've thought of something in hockey, rest assured Scotty has already thought of it and thought if it is gonna work or not and will be able to give you an answer. Like there's other people like Anatoly Tarasov, the father of Russian hockey. I'd love to have been able to talk to Fred Shiro, the old coach for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 70s and then Rangers in the late 70s. You know, there's those guys, Bill Torrey, the architect of the New York Islanders, who did something that really nobody else
Starting point is 00:38:33 has ever done in hockey. He turned a blank piece of paper into a dynasty. You know, Bill Torrey was the GM of the New York Islanders in their inception and he turned this blank sheet of paper folks blank sheet of paper into a four-time Stanley Cup champion all inside of a decade So that would that would be for me, but but Scotty Scotty Bowman Scotty Bowman's a guy and you know My backup is player the total opposite the complete opposite of gump Worsley John Belafonte Okay, everything about gump like the complete 180 as John Beliveau. Hmm, okay. Everything about Gump, like the complete 180,
Starting point is 00:39:05 is John Beliveau. I think I have autographed Montreal Canadiens jersey from John Beliveau. Yeah. It's the best. Yeah, that's the only non-leafs jersey that I have. That you allow yourself to have? Yeah, well, not, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Hanging in my childhood room, it was. Uh-huh. What do you got? Okay, player. This again, these are gonna bother you. Matt Sendeen. Yeah. Oh Jesus.
Starting point is 00:39:33 Yeah. Yeah. How about this, if we get Matt's on the show, you do the interview. Okay, sure. I don't know if people other people like that. Just to hear you. Just to hear you.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Mr. Sendeen. It's Zach here. So.'t know if people like that. Just to hear Mr. Sundeen. It's Zach here. Thanks for coming on the show. When I was a little kid, my grandfather got me a jersey. Like a little baby Maple Leaf jersey. And it has a C on it and it's signed by all the captains, former captains of the Maple Leafs. Nice. So it has all the captains, former captains of the Maple Leafs. So it has all the older guys, the one that I was missing for a long time
Starting point is 00:40:08 and still don't have is Mats. That's the one I'm missing. And then I don't have the recent guys, but that's kind of just, it's hanging up there. So that's a player. The commentator, this one is, I was taking a different approach from this one, but it's Mike Johnson Oh, yeah
Starting point is 00:40:26 Yeah, but it's because like I think the way he views the game and talks about the game is fascinating Like I just love his outlook on everything how he approaches it and I just think learning and talking hockey with him would be Like mind-blowing for me to just sit down and hear how he sees it. Yep uh the gm I think it for me would just hang on and hear how he sees it. Yep. The GM, I think for me, it would just be- Hang on, hang on, hang on. Your GM would probably be the late Pat Quinn. No, I did think about it, but no. I also thought, no, I thought about Pat Quinn.
Starting point is 00:41:04 No, it would be Burke Burke because we have him on the show but I think you have experiences of him off of- You can call him, you have his phone and we can call him up. My calls with Burke are, what time? 310 Burke. All right, fine. Hangs up. Okay, fine.
Starting point is 00:41:23 I'll call him then. But I think it would just be cool to like sit down and have conversations with Berkey about stories and stuff even that he doesn't tell on air. Find out some of that stuff like that he just doesn't say. Here's what I want you to do. Yeah, I want you to make me I want you to make me a promise. Okay. Okay. When you have that your first like long conversation with Berkey. Yeah. Here's what I want you to say. Brian, is it true you drafted the Sidines? I love them and I will never get sick of hearing him tell the story about the Sidines or the barn fight. I think it was last week or two weeks ago when you asked him something about tree living and always getting a defenseman. That's what it was last week or two weeks ago when you asked him something about tree living and
Starting point is 00:42:07 Always getting a defenseman. That's what it was Yeah, and where did you learn that from? But the draft when you started bringing up something about oh like there was one time you didn't I don't know if you caught it But he just started smirking waiting hoping you would ask him about his seduce I could just tell that that was what he wanted that to happen and then it got there. He is, if you look at like the history of the game and the history of that position, general manager, probably the biggest, you know, quote per 60 of any general manager in the history of the game.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Like you go through, like traditionally, general manager sort of always did sort of stay in the background. The coach was the face of the team. But as far as like the personality of your team is being defined by your general manager, Brian was it. Yeah. Right?
Starting point is 00:43:01 Brian was a guy that, who's not just whose identity was powerful, but it was also welcoming at the same time. Like you did not miss, like you know how now we don't miss Paul Marie's press conferences? You did not miss Brian Burke press conferences. Right? Everybody, cause you knew he'll have something, you know, he'll pull out a
Starting point is 00:43:20 crumpled piece of paper from his pocket of something that he wrote down on the way over in the cab. Distosterone and our tricolons. And I just love him. Some of the stories that I've heard about him and how he talks to players, because he always loves his tough guys. Special place in his heart for like the Brad Mays of the world. He's a fantastic guy. He's a
Starting point is 00:43:48 laugh a minute, but there are some things. He's a big code guy too. There are just some things where it's like, nope, this is the way it's going to be. And I'll tell you what, the Jim Gregory award that we know of now is the General Manager of the Year award. He first proposed that early 90s and every single year, I remember Colin Campbell would always tell me every year at the managers meeting, Brian would bring it up. He'd make it an agenda item. We need to have a, I can't do a good Brian Burke, his son can do a good Brian Burke impression because he sounds like he's that. Yeah, without doing it.
Starting point is 00:44:22 Yeah. We need an award for the managers. We need an award for us here the GM of the award and I'll always get voted down but he was just like he would just persevere and his stories about the early days of the NHL Department of Player Safety where they used to record all the games on VHS tapes, but the tapes weren't long enough to hold a game. So what they would do is Brian would only record the second and third periods of games,
Starting point is 00:44:52 because he said like, no one's doing anything dumb in the first period. So we didn't bother, this was the NHL everybody, we didn't bother to record the first period. We just recorded the second and the third period. Because that's what all the dumb stuff is gonna happen that gets built up starting in the first period Yeah, so if you did something in the first never out you ever hear the Marty McSorley story with Lindros that Berkey tells
Starting point is 00:45:12 No, so Eric Lindros always wanted to fight. I was Marty actually always wanted to fight Eric Lindros and Eric's playing for the Philadelphia Flyers and Marty would always go out and go at him so he's playing against San Jose and Lindros scores a goal Marty body checks him and Lindros instinctively throws the gloves down okay and hugs him the gets in like no one wants to fight Marty and allegedly bit Marty in the fight okay everyone's howling like you got to suspend them. You got to they don't have this on tape.
Starting point is 00:45:47 You got to suspend them like you bit Marty McSorley and Berkey called up Marty McSorley. Marty told me he gets a phone call. Is Marty Brian Burke here? That we're going to throw like a dime 10 game suspension. We're going to throw a dime or maybe even a maybe only a nickel at at Eric Lindrass. I just need you to tell me that he bit you.
Starting point is 00:46:05 You tell me he bit you, we're gonna ring him up. And Marty goes, ah, Brian, things happen in fights. I don't know, he goes, Marty, I need you to tell me, did Erik Lindrass bite you or not? Brian, I don't know, it's a fight. I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna. And Brian says, I'm gonna ask you one last time, and then I'm gonna drop it.
Starting point is 00:46:24 Did Erik Lindrass bite you in that fight? And Marty says, Brian, Eric Lindros did not bite me. Now you call Bobby Clark his manager and tell him he owes me one. Can you imagine that happening today? A player appealing to that old code of things just happen in a fight. Don't worry about it. Everything's fine. I absolutely love that story. Now you call Bobby Clark. Tell him he owes me one. Tell him he owes me one. Other things is wait for Sam Dickinson here. Are we getting Sam as he's getting hooked up? So the news of the day, Marco Stern becomes the head coach of the Boston Bruins,
Starting point is 00:47:13 also assistant coaches with the New York Rangers, David Quinn and Joe Sacco. Yes, it is the B.U. bench. The morning cup of hockey, guys, had a good time with that one. We mentioned Dan Muse yesterday. I think we're all, as I mentioned yesterday, wondering if Michael Leone goes over with him to Pittsburgh. Leone is the head coach of the Rochester
Starting point is 00:47:35 Americans of the American Hockey League and they coached 03s and 05s together for the US program. And the other one as I mentioned with the with Pierre McGuire we didn't really spend a lot of time on it but I mean there's going to be a lot of agents that use this as a comparable. Brock Nelson with the three-year contract 7.5 AAV there and you'll wonder what that means for negotiations for players like John Tavares. Anyhow, to our next guest, he is a first round draft pick and he is also a Memorial Cup champion. He is Sam Dickinson of the London Knights slash San Jose Sharks, and he joins me now.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Sam, first of all, congratulations. When did you stop smiling or have you stopped smiling at all? I don't think so. I don't think it's fully kicked in yet. But like you said, it's fully kicked in yet. Like you said, it's pretty cool to be introduced as a Memorial Cup champion now. It's something I'll definitely have to get used to and pretty exciting. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:34 I'll tell you, Sam, watching last year in Saginaw winning the Memorial Cup on home turf, I would imagine that there's a few players there thinking, I think the Memorial Cups, the hardest trophy to win, because you have such a short window to do it. Like if you don't do it when you're there, chances are you're not gonna get back. But obviously you're part of a powerhouse and you guys got back there.
Starting point is 00:49:00 How much of the conversation this year was just revolving around, much like the Edmonton Oilers now playing against the Florida Panthers, not only do we want to get back, but we know what it feels like when we don't win and it burns. Is that part of the conversation this year? Yeah, absolutely. Coming in from day one, getting back to London at the beginning of the year this year, with obviously, you know, a plethora of guys coming back with the returning core that we had from last year to this year. Now, is that what it was? That's what it was to the whole season was, you know, we really felt if we didn't win that Memorial Cup, that, you know, it would have been a disappointing season knowing how
Starting point is 00:49:36 close we were against Saginaw and then coming into this year's. That's what it was all about and understanding that the heartbreak and, you know, once we got closer and into the Memorial Cup, we talked so much about, you know, how terrible it was all about and understanding that the heartbreak and, and you know, once we got closer and into the Memorial Cup, we talked so much about, you know, how terrible it was, the feeling of losing and being gut wrenched and all that stuff. So it definitely played a huge, huge factor. Have you ever had to defend against someone like Gavin McKenna before? And the follow-up to that is what's it like defending Gavin McKenna?
Starting point is 00:50:04 It is, it is not fun at all. He's just, he seems like he's got everything, everything nearly perfected when he's coming down the ice. You know, you have to play him, play him so tightly, but not too tight where, you know, you get, you get even with him, you know, he'll make a move and get around you. You know, obviously I was really lucky to get to know him when we were at the world juniors together and I mean, uh, you see his habits and everything like that. Like it doesn't really surprise me to know how good of a player he is
Starting point is 00:50:30 and that he'll definitely have a long career playing hockey. So it was definitely one of the most challenging players I've gone up against, that's for sure. Well, at what point this season, and maybe it was the beginning, I don't know. At what point this season, Sam, did you say to yourself, we have a Memorial Cup team, we have a team that can win that? Day one, I think.
Starting point is 00:50:50 I think day one of when everybody got back from their NHL camps. And once we kind of saw the team come together, it was right away. We definitely got the team to do this. We were so close last year. Like I said, a massive amount of our core, uh, from last year was back to this year. And then you think of the additions that we made, uh, in the season with, with Austin Elliott, obviously just an unbelievable season from him, uh, Blake Montgomery coming from, from the USHL was just an unbelievable guy, unbelievable
Starting point is 00:51:21 player, and then you think of Cam Allen, our one trade at the deadline. Like I think the, those three things, um, just kind of solidified the fact that, you know, this, this was our year. If, if there was every year for us to do it, it was going to be this one. Yeah. I'm glad you mentioned Austin Elliott, the goaltender, because what a, what a wild couple of years and couple of seasons it's been for him. Like what a gift a for you guys, but what a gift for him too.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Like, I mean, hockey always gives you a reason to quit. Hockey gave this guy a reason to quit a lot of times. You ever thought on your goaltender, what this season and what that cup meant to him? Yeah, I think, I think it meant a lot. You know, he talked a lot about, you know, how bad he wanted to win. He was obviously on a Saskatoon team that was similar, similar to us with the success that they'd have at West. I think it was two or three straight conference finals losses with him on the team.
Starting point is 00:52:11 So we understood where we were coming from with the whole being so close, being right there, but not quite getting it over the line. So him understanding that was massive. And yeah, I mean, like you said, I think he was lucky to be able to come through a situation like he was in London. Obviously, you know, played such a massive factor to our team throughout the entire season. Let me get a couple of thoughts on the Hunter brothers from you.
Starting point is 00:52:36 Mark, I swear there must be more than one Mark Hunter because every time I'm out at a GTHL rink, like Mark Hunter's either there or was just there. Um, he seems to be all over the place. I know you get out there, sorry, at the OHL cup this year, supporting your, uh, your Marlies, but, uh, like Mark Hunter is everywhere and Dale, you know, Dale's going to go down with all due respect to, to Brian Kilre, you know, the, the greatest, you know, OHL coach and maybe greatest CHL coach of all time.
Starting point is 00:53:05 You ever thought on the brothers? I mean, they've built the London Knights and you know, they're the, the two best in the business for a reason. Uh, you think of Mark, like you said, I'd hate to know the kilometers that he, uh, that he has on his truck, the amount of driving that he's doing, uh, weekly to go watch guys, but you know, I think, you said, with Mark, it speaks to the, it speaks to how badly they want to win. You know, it's not just the players in London.
Starting point is 00:53:29 It's, it's how badly they want to win. You know, they, they start the culture of the entire organization and, you know, what they do to give us the best opportunity to win night in and night out season after season, it's why they're, you know, the London nights are always, um, you know, at the beginning of the year teams are just talking about, you know, the London Knights have a good team again. It's just, it starts with them too. And, you know, like I said, there's, there's absolutely a reason why the two of them have built, you know, the, the London Knights to what they are and why they
Starting point is 00:53:56 really are two of the best in the business. Yeah. Give us a sense of, you know, I got a couple more questions here for you, but, you know, one of them is like, what, what's the experience of playing for the London Knights? Like we always hear, oh, it's a mini NHL. It's like that grooming ground before you get to the national hockey. Like that's the way the fans treat you.
Starting point is 00:54:17 That's the way the organization treats you. The building is packed. Everyone's wearing green. It's a successful franchise. It's become a Cadillac franchise across the CHL. What's it like being in that day in and day out? And how much stress is involved in it? Because you're in the Marquis Junior Hockey Town. Absolutely. I mean, it's special to be a part of, you spoke of, the fans, the atmosphere, just the city of London and everything about that is, um, it, it means so much to the players on the team, knowing that, you know,
Starting point is 00:54:50 you have an entire city rallied around you. Um, and I think when you said that what comes with the stress is, is it's a good stress. It's the kind of, you know, it's, it's the expectations that when you're on the London nights, you know, the expectation is to win, to be a winner, to have success in junior hockey and also go on and have success in professional hockey. That's one of the big things that I've noticed with the London Knights is they run it like an NHL team so that when you get there,
Starting point is 00:55:18 you're not learning to catch up on everything you do. It's that you can hit the ground running and you're already prepared for what's there. It's great. Um, one last one for you. So I'm in Buffalo right now at the NHL Scouting Combine. And one of the things I was talking about earlier in the show, Sam, was, you know, there's one team that, you know, when they're, they're interviewing the prospects or they're holding up a picture of a person sitting in a chair in an open field and asking the player, okay, what's the story behind this picture?
Starting point is 00:55:44 How did that person arrive at this moment in their life? And the players got to come up with some type of story. What are your combined memories of the interviews that you went through? Yeah, it was, for me, it was a whirlwind, the entire combined experience, obviously. I'd come off losing to Saginaw last year. So me, Sam O'Reilly and Jared Woolley had come in a couple days late.
Starting point is 00:56:07 So we were kind of just compacted even more into our schedules. But it was a great time. I had a ton of fun there. You get to meet new guys, obviously going into meetings. You're meeting with new teams. I think one of the more interesting parts of the calline is seeing, you know, how differently teams run their, their rooms from, you know, teams that are a little more intense and in your face and kind of, you know, want to get what's out of you. And some are really
Starting point is 00:56:32 laid back where, you know, you're just kind of going in there, you're, you're talking about yourself and, you know, you're having these teams learn about the type of person, especially that you are not just the player. Yeah, I mean, the whole weekend, week is super exciting. I had a lot of fun. We've obviously got two more guys there this year who I'm sure are gonna do really well in their interviews and it's definitely a very exciting time,
Starting point is 00:56:55 kind of the last thing before the draft, I guess. What do you remember from the San Jose interviews? They ultimately ended up drafting you. That was one of the laid back ones, kind of, you know, just got in there. Obviously they had the entire front office in there. Uh, it was for me going into that one, uh, it was for me going into every interview is just, you know, be myself, uh, you know, have some fun with it, but, uh, you know, don't get too serious. You know, at the end of the day, they're, they're people too.
Starting point is 00:57:23 They just want to learn about you. You know, uh, I was told a lot, you know, teams, teams don't love, uh, don't get too serious. At the end of the day, they're people too. They just wanna learn about you. I was told a lot, teams don't love robots. They want the human people well. So yeah, I mean, going to San Jose was great. It was a lot of fun. Getting to meet the entire front office was really exciting.
Starting point is 00:57:40 And to be a part of San Jose is something that I couldn't be more excited about. Hey listen, anyone that saw you play in the Memorial Cup is saying the same thing. That guy's a San Jose shark soon. Sam, congratulations again. Looks great on you, your team, London, the organization, all of it.
Starting point is 00:57:57 Congratulations again. Thanks, Jeff. There he is, Sam Dickinson of the London Nights Memorial Cup Champions and first round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks, along with Macklin Celebrini last year. And I'll tell you, I'm not sure how much of the Memorial Cup did you end up watching, Zach, because every time you look at Sam Dickinson in London, you say to yourself, you know, Last year and I'll tell you I'm not sure how much how much the World Cup did you end up watching Zach is? Every time you look at Sam Dickinson in London you say to yourself, you know, I might I used to think he's like a year Away. I'm not so sure that I think about I think I don't think that he's a year away anymore. Yeah No, I watched a good amount. He Looks very mature and was very mature and how he spoke joining us here
Starting point is 00:58:44 But yeah, he just looked mature which a lot of times when you watch some of these tournaments like one of the reasons I think you Stephen Ellis as well enjoy these is because I mean not trying to Knock these guys, but there's immaturity in the way they play or approach the game kids, right? But it was like watching him is like you could tell Easton Cowan kind of to the same amount, same degree. Even Gavin McKenna has it, the maturity where like those mistakes, those moments, it doesn't get too high, doesn't get too low. It just doesn't impact their game affect them too much as they go throughout. And like that is a big, big step into the next level. throughout and like that is a big big step into the next level did you speak of a prospect did you listen to her watch Easton Cowan and with Albrega the other day no I believe that's coming out tomorrow is that coming out tomorrow I believe so yeah so we should probably promote that then yeah we should okay
Starting point is 00:59:40 so that's coming up tomorrow I believe believe, Easton Cowan, Leafs morning take. They have Bellburga and Rosehill. That's coming up? Yeah, yes, coming up. Friday, Leafs morning take. All right, there we go. All right. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:59:54 You're in charge. You're in charge. Follow Zach, follow him on the socials. He'll tell you what's up. All right, a couple of more things to get to here. I don't know how Zach is gonna handle this one, but let's watch. The sheet is powered by FanDuel.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Home of the same game, Parlay. Make every moment more on FanDuel. FanDuel, proud to connect fans to the major sports moments that matter to them. We are here at the Southern Tier Brewing Company, and last night we had a game to talk about. What are you bringing today for this segment that we usually close the show with? Okay
Starting point is 01:00:29 Here is Back to the cons might market. I asked you one before Okay It's moved around a little bit here now Uh, but is leon number one after two goals last night. No That's what I was gonna ask you go casperi cappin. That's gotta be Kasperi. Victor Arvidsson with the big slapshot goal? No. Matthias Ekholm. He's got a... Connor McDavid has moved more into the favorite of the Con Smythe. Minus 145, Leon Dreisseltl plus 430. He is second. Bobrovski tied with Dreisseltl plus 430 there as
Starting point is 01:01:02 well. Obviously anything could happen here with the remainder of the series. Yeah, but Look I think this should be tighter with dry settle and McDavid is what I would say I Know what McDavid has done throughout all of this but and kills penalties Yeah, I know every he does everything on that team. I get it. I just feel like Dry Cytle has been the one who's had the better season probably here. Points wise maybe. You know, I don't know. I just feel like Dry Cytle's been the one who stood out a little bit more to me. Popped off the page a little bit more. Yeah, he's got three game winners. That too. Let's throw that in there as well. But even just play, which I mean, is it pretty incredible to say given how unbelievable McDavid has been throughout the playoffs. But yeah, McDavid's got 28 points. Tri-Sidle's got 27 points. And Bouchard with 18 with Ryan Newton Hopkins and Sam Bennett. They also have 18.
Starting point is 01:02:03 Sam Bennett's not getting more love there. Because Florida Florida wins it. What's Bennett got 12 goals plus 1300 Then it is and what's Bobovsky plus 430? He was excellent last night, but I know no one loves the Arvidsson goal I get it, but still like how many shots were there last night? You know what I was thinking 46 shots man Yeah that game Gave me look Edmonton doesn't seem to get too down with some of this stuff now Maybe a different emotional impact as it had before but last night in that overtime. I was getting that
Starting point is 01:02:38 Edmonton needs to win. Yeah, or Bob might go in no one's ever scoring on me ever again mode You know, you know when he like goes into it just I know snaps and all of a sudden you're like, oh shit We're not beating this guy. Yeah, that was what he was giving those that feeling I was getting Yeah, I know over time last night cuz he made some I mean maybe not ten bell but pretty darn close and over time Would you have made that would you have made that goalie interference challenge? Yeah, it's early enough you would have a yeah a yeah he still would have yeah cuz now block after no I said like yeah I would do it again yeah no not in the second not in the third that one there yeah I make that one I mean it made it a three to one
Starting point is 01:03:16 game I know but you get you have the runway you do and you have the team that you believe can do it. Even though I believe in that team later on, I'm not making that in a second, but I might just be, might just not have the balls for it. All right, anything else? Yeah, one thing. What do you got?
Starting point is 01:03:39 People in the chat brought it up a couple of times. Did you see Sean Monahan won the master 10? No, sorry. Oh, the video the video is incredible. I reached with NHL put it out today. I like by the way they're doing like they're doing the viral moments as opposed to just the presentation with the suit and the bow tie and come up and get the award. Yeah. Yeah I I it's cool. This one by the way has Steve Mayer written all over it. I
Starting point is 01:04:03 don't know he'll ever like publicly say y'all this was my idea he's a very brave and share it with share it with the room kind of guy. But this one has Steve Mayer written all over it. I love it. I think this is one of the one of the smartest things the NHL has done with with these awards like make make the viral moments. Yeah the one for Barkov was so awesome. Yeah it was so great and then like I'm sorry like you don't have you don't have a heart if you don't look at what the Sean Monahan video that came out this morning. Holy smokes. Good luck. That was if you haven't had a chance to see it, it's on on all the socials. NHL, NHL players association as well. It's, it's a wonderful and I'm good on the NHL for doing it this way. Go make viral moments. Actually, quick question for you. Maybe a how it's made kind of thing.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Okay. They gave Kucherov the Ted Lindsay. Yep. The pictures with them, I'm sure you noticed in the Tampa practice facility, guys are wearing gear and everything. Is it common practice for guys to be sticking around and practicing in the arena still at this point in the season? Is that something that you're allowed to do because you're the season that NHL season is technically still on because I'm pretty sure you can't You can't do that when the season's over, right?
Starting point is 01:05:18 I don't know that many guys do right. I'll tell you where it is mandatory For a lot of teams. Did you know this? No. KHL. Oh. You're eliminated. You still have to go to practice every day because you're being paid. So you still have to go and show up and practice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And go through. I've talked to a lot of guys like this is like ridiculous. Everyone's hung over. No one's really practicing hard. But because you're getting paid, even though your season's over, you're still expected to go and practice. I did know that. I have a buddy playing over there right now.
Starting point is 01:05:52 Is he out? Yeah, well the season's over now. When he got out, he asked his team to practice? Yeah, and he's like, yeah, I can't leave yet. And he just didn't say really much why. But he's like, yeah, I can't leave yet.'t leave yet like oh, that's interesting your seasons over Remember Ryan Whitney told me the story that when he first went over there He was getting dressed and I think it must have been one of the trainers came over to him and like Cut like a hole in his hockey pants the money and to put the money in wits like what are you doing?
Starting point is 01:06:21 Oh, yeah, well we're getting paid today So like this is where you put your money because if you leave it in your stall It's gonna get stolen. Yeah, if you don't leave your money, and he's like you guys skate you doing? It goes, oh yeah, well, we're getting paid today. So like, this is where you put your money. Cause if you leave it in your stall, it's going to get stolen. Yeah. If you don't leave your money. And he's like, you guys skate with your money. Oh yeah. John Graham would talk about that. The gold, gold Ted, old Carolina gold tender would have his have like
Starting point is 01:06:34 in inside the pad, he'd have it like cut out and that's where he would. That must mean the story I heard. Cause I was about to say that. Yeah. Stuff is money. What a league. Skate with your body. What a league. What a league. And what a time
Starting point is 01:06:47 here at Buffalo. So we're going to be here tomorrow as well. The Southern Tier Brewing Company. Thanks to everybody here for the hospitality.
