Every Friday here on The Sheet, Ryan Berg stops by.
He'll be here in about 15 minutes time.
All the news of the week, some of your questions from the chats, some of your emails.
The Sheet at thenationnetwork.com.
But! emails, the sheet at thenationnetwork.com. But,
we've got a trade deadline.
Trade targets, we'll talk about.
Couple of different teams and some players as well.
I do wanna make a point about one Anaheim Ducks defenseman
that I don't think has been getting enough attention.
Anaheim, we know the season they've had.
Oh, they're playing really well now
They don't tend to get a lot of attention
But one thing that I do want to point out here on the program coming up in a couple of seconds, but first
Invertedly and honestly, I didn't know it was going to be this hard. I swear your honor
I swear I swear ladies and gentlemen of the jury. I swear your honor
I did not know this is gonna be this hard for Zach Phillips.
Philly, did I almost send you on a goose chase today?
Or I guess last night, technically.
Yeah, so the problem was I started
and I found it last night and I made the mistake
of not sending it. Hang on, hang on.
Here's what we're talking about.
Here's what we're talking about.
Yeah.
I texted Philly last night, I'm like,
look, you gotta find me a picture of Miko Rantanen in a
Quebec Nordiques uniform. Yeah. This is a peek into
poor Zach's life. The stupid stuff that but I do have a point here I swear. So how
did this one lead you? I thought it was gonna be simple like okay screen cap
from the outdoor game in Lake Tahoe Vegas you know Vegas against Colorado
this one should be like a two-foot putt.
This is a layup for Philly.
He's my guy.
He's going to have this in a cozy five minutes.
Not so fast.
Yeah, like 99% of the things you ask me, it's like, okay, I can find a way to get this.
I know where to go.
This was honestly the last request that I ever thought I would have trouble finding.
I searched it last night too and all of a sudden it's like one image comes up and I
make the mistake of not saving it.
So I'm like, all right, whatever, it's easy enough.
I'll find it tomorrow.
I go back all day today, I can't find that image.
And it's like crappy quality pictures, pictures that are like have designs all over them or
like autographs and stuff, which is is fine but not what we're looking for
to the point where I was panicking and called Stephen Ellis and was like
Stephen you gotta help me man
He's the ultimate resort
Hang on, is he the in case of emergency break glass dude around daily face off now
like if all else fails and you want
it like okay yeah I gotta call Alice yeah it's my hockey encyclopedia just
the the safety net there for me but yeah we found one we did find one okay yes
throw this one up there before we get the show started here properly so this
is a picture of a number of players from the Colorado Avalanche and Quebec Nordiques
uniforms, of course, as we all know, the Avalanche used to be the Quebec Nordiques until a certain
someone got a little bit too greedy, but nonetheless.
So there's that picture.
And then we rewind to last night's Hartford Whalaylor's, I mean Carolina Hurricanes game against the
Buffalo Sabres.
And man did this guy need a big night and he had it.
Here's Mikko Rantinen.
Goal picked up an assist as well.
Let's have a look at this.
I know you love green.
If you like this show, you know I'm a big proponent of more green and hockey.
Mikko Rantinen, snap!
Carolina, I mean Hartford.
I mean the Hurricanes, I mean the Whalers
Yeah, looks like an old Adams division matchup by the way. That's for you olds. Oh, look at that green
Carolina wins this one 5-2 is the final score. Now the only reason I wanted you to find a picture of Mikko Rantinen in a Nord's
Jersey
Like this is how trivial my life is just little things that tickle me under the chin
Mikko Rantinen will no doubt go down in history as the last player to wear the
jerseys of both the Quebec Nordiques and the Hartford Whalers. That's it. I don't
know that's big and profound or interesting to anybody. I will ask and I
know there's seconds, I know at thirds actually, for both for both teams anybody I will ask and I know there's seconds I know at thirds actually for both for both teams I will ask Brian Burke about the Hartford
Whalers since he was such a key piece of it for a number of years
well for a little while anyhow I just thought I'd throw that one out there was
a little bit of a flavor puck he will go down as the last player in the NHL to
wear the whale and the Fleur de Lis. Quebec Nordiques.
But, but, but.
And for whalers.
What?
Couldn't, couldn't Neches wear it?
The Nordiques if they wear them again in Colorado?
They could.
He could.
But as of right now, he's the last one.
I see.
Until the Colorado Avalanche.
Wait, actually, I'm going to hit you with, I'm going to push back.
Hold on.
Okay.
Was Tyson Jost not on that team?
Ooh, okay. So now Philly's got something to do during the show.
He's going to go back to 2021 and the Lake Tahoe disastrous
outside outdoor game to try to find.
Okay, he was on the team. Why don't we do this? While you search this,
which is interesting to about Oh, by the way, in the chat, there's big news is breaking
news in the chat before we get going here. You know what the breaking news in the chat is? Is it have to do with lies?
She's the one yeah
One one date
There it is Johnny Lazarus. She's the one guys one date. He's fallen in love
That's it
It's probably gonna move for you. Yeah
Does she live in New York? Do we know much about this person?
Jeff?
Is it Tyson Joast?
Yeah.
So there's two, exactly. My point off the top.
Tyson Joast and Nico Rantana.
Yeah.
Oh, that's good.
Alright. So I'm glad we settled that.
Better quality image too.
Would have been easier if I just said Tyson Joast, but it would have had the impact and the gravity.
It's a big name player, et cetera.
All right, coming up on the program today,
Daily Outlines presented by our friends and partners
at FanDuel, North America's number one
sports book app provider.
There's a couple of things from that Buffalo Sabres,
Hartford Whalers slash Carolina Hurricanes game last night
that I do want to go over. We will talk a little bit about the Buffalo Sabres inford-Wailers slash Carolina Hurricanes game last night that I do want to go over.
We will talk a little bit about the Buffalo Sabres in advance of trade deadline.
We will talk about the Hartford-Wailers and the Green, etc. etc. with one of their former
GMs Brian Burke who's going to be joining us in a couple of moments.
Speaking of Brian Burke, he is topic number three as soon as we get done with the Sabres
and the Wailers.
Burke you board every Friday here.
Happy Friday, happy Burke Day happy Berkia Day.
And then GateGate, BenchGate,
Brock Nelson, Matthew Poitras Gate,
and how that maybe should have been called,
or maybe we can even have the discussion of,
and we'll throw this one to Brian,
should it have even been called at all?
This is in the Boston Brewers-New York Allenders game from last night.
So that's on deck as well and a couple of emails
that we're gonna get to and we're going to start
because we got a bunch of interesting trades.
Trade proposals, the who says no,
and I'll ask a manager about some of these trade proposals.
We're gonna start that in earnest next week.
So the first one will be on Monday,
but there's another email that we got
and we'll read it a little bit later on which reinforces the point about player
shooting at the triangle. And we had one person email in saying this is the first
time I really noticed one person doing it consistently in the NHL. We're gonna
get there coming up in a couple of moments. Meanwhile, oh look at that! Oh
that's a great shot. See I I'm telling you, like look,
I know it was a disaster.
I know it didn't work out.
I know that the ice quality was a major issue.
But first of all, that looks so good.
Like look at the backdrop.
Look at how fantastic that was at 2021 Lake Tahoe.
Like it looks gorgeous.
Again, I know it didn't work out
because of the weather and the ice quality,
but still, does that not look beautiful?
And good for you for finding that nice image.
I only don't, I don't know how I like the combination
of the Vegas jerseys against that.
You don't like it?
The combination here. I love the non Nordiques ones in the background
I'm just saying the Vegas jerseys in particular in this specific game
Mmm, like the Nordiques looks crisp and clean and yeah
it like throwback and then the Vegas one looks like
But I don't mind that and red and yeah, but don't you but I like that
Honestly, like I like that. I like the the difference between the two. Here's like the New School Jersey meets the old school Jersey
I like that a lot. I don't want everything to look like it's from the
Not gonna say original six the solvent six era. How about that the solvent six the solvent six era how about that the solvent six the arbitrary six era
How about that? I do like that. I do like having a new school Jersey versus an old school of Jersey
I do like that. TA Neiman says I'm wrong. I don't have a problem with jerseys. I like the jerseys
I'm just talking about this specific matchup. That's all. I don't know if I'm a fan of it. All right, okay
You were you were proven wrong by someone?
I do like the sounds of that one.
Shocker.
Okay, in advance of Brian Burkett, I did want to point something out.
But all this is in true Burkett spirit.
We'll kick off the program here and maybe ask Burkett about this one.
We've seen it before.
We think of Ryan Getslaf and Joe Thornton,
which is one of the more famous ones from a playoff series between Anaheim and San Jose but fights
off the draw now seem to be the bailiwick of oh yeah that's what the
Kachucks do right that's Matthew Kachuck versus Brandon Haigel at the
Canada-US Four Nations that Saturday evening in Montreal. So yesterday in the
Buffalo Sabres-Carolina
Hurricanes game, we saw one off the draw.
We saw Dylan Cousins and, checks notes,
Jespery Kotkyniemi.
And Kotkyniemi drops him.
We have this one queued up,
because there's a couple of points
that I want to make about this.
So they're jawing beforehand,
and this is such a cool thing to see.
Just like visually, everybody stands up,
everybody loves it.
The moment where Kotkenyemi raises his right leg,
like Kotkenyemi is gonna throw for keeps.
Like when he lifts up that leg,
if we can show it, just the one punch again,
you know he's throwing this one,
like this punch is coming from the cellar,
from Yusperri Kotkenyemi.
He raises his leg and then throws a right as hard as he can. It
really is something as we show this one in in slower motion. Good on Kotkinyemi
for taking the fight. We've seen Dylan Cousins do it before. Look at that leg
come up as he's throwing on Cousins who's never really able to get his balance.
Kakayemi does catch him with one and then gets him off balance, slips on a banana peel and they fall to the ice.
But good start to the game there. Hey, Philly?
Yeah, I mean not the guys I was expecting to go. It's like Dylan Cousins, open ice fight or start the game off the opening draw.
I'm like, uh, Kakenyemi?
Who? Why?
Like, good for him. Like, he came out swinging, he was ready to go.
That's a big boy in Dylan Cousins, someone I would be having second thoughts about going up against.
And Kakenyemi went in there ready to go.
The leg kick is funny though, because when we watch it back there,
it's not just like the leg kick.
Like, the leg goes up, forward, back, and then the punch comes in like she went full.
Oh, he's just trying to put everything. He wants like everything in this punch.
He just says like, George St. Pierre meets Kevin Biaxa.
Like he just wants everything into this one. It was close to Superman punch.
I don't know that I exactly called it Superman punch.
It kind of looked a little bit like that like the leg is up and then as he pulls
back he just fires it. Yesperi, Kud, Kenyami, who knew? Who knew? And it does look like
a throwback to the old Adams division as well. One thing one point that I want to
make with the Buffalo Sabres I'm very much of the belief and again you can
make this point about every team in the NHL and you can make the,
you can rehash the old Gretzky statement
about Gretzky got traded so anybody can get traded.
Even though I don't think that Kevin Adams,
the Buffalo Sabres are gonna have an absolute fire sale here
and it's gonna be multiple bodies going out the door,
I think he's listening on everyone.
And I think again, for the right price,
which might be true of every team,
I think everybody's available.
Like, I can't look at this Buffalo Sabres team
and say like, oh yeah, this guy's definitely,
there's definitely no chance that he would move them.
I think for the right price,
there's no untouchables on this Buffalo Sabres team.
Now, I get conflicting reports
about players like Jason Zucker.
Oh yeah, Jason Zucker's gonna get traded. No, they love him as part of leadership. They're gonna re about players like Jason Zucker. Oh yeah, Jason Zucker is gonna get traded.
No, they love him as part of leadership.
They're gonna re-up with Jason Zucker.
But as far as like anybody else on that lineup,
I don't think that they're hanging up quick
on any conversation about any player.
I think the Buffalo Sabres have a chance here
to do something wild.
I don't necessarily know that they do But I think the potential is certainly there for the Buffalo Sabres take your tech. So pick take pick your player
What what is it though that you're?
Trying to accomplish here if you're the Sabres right like that's kind of where I want to break this down
It's like yeah, there's guys that make sense
Obviously, I mean we talked about tuck and Vegas looking around and that seems like that could be the Fed
and soccer being there Byram's names being thrown out but it's the guys that
I'm looking at who are younger who you have maybe on term with some of the guys
own cousins but then you hear okay Paturkas name is now out there, Bone
Byram was out there as well I'm, these seem like the guys to me, and maybe I'm just not smart enough.
Like, if it is, if that's the case, that's the case.
But I just look at them, I'm like,
why would that be the guy to go at the door, Jeff?
Like, that seems like the kind of guy
you want a part of your group moving forward.
The problem with the Buffalo Sabres is everybody's,
by the way, I questioned the chat about this split lip that I have.
And John, was it John? No. Rick said, did you start the pot off with a fight? I got this on the weekend
like I just woke up on Sunday and it had like a cracked lip and I thought it
would go away in a couple of days and it hasn't. Hopefully it goes away for the
next show because I can understand how it's distracting.
Here's the thing about the Buffalo Sabres. They don't want picks.
The Buffalo Sabres are done with draft picks, all of that.
They're out of the green banana business.
They need players.
Right now, the Buffalo Sabres find themselves in a spot where everybody seems to be playing
one position higher than they should.
Second line players are on the first line, third line players are on the second line,
et cetera.
Second pairing guys should be on the third pair. That's where the Buffalo Sabres are at right now.
And I don't know about you,
but whenever I look at the Buffalo Sabres,
both watching them play, look at the lineup,
all that I can think of is I like a lot of these players.
I just don't like all of these players together.
You know what I mean?
There's so much to like about whether it's
Tade Thompson, Rasmus, Staline, Bowen Byram, Dylan Cousins, we just saw JJ Piterka. I just don't like
them all. I just don't like them all together on this team for whatever reason. And probably it's
because everybody's playing out of position. Essentially what I'm saying is I think they're
probably in the business now of trying to bring in more veteran guys
Right like and start to use some of your younger assets to bring in other players Like I don't know how long it'll take to turn this thing around
My gut says if you're willing to part with the right players
It's probably a quicker turnaround than certainly many Buffalo Sabres fans feel
But I look at it again, and I say I like so many of these guys
I just don't like them together.
Now I know JJ Paturka's name is out there.
That one, that one I'm told like JJ Paturka is a big favorite of Terry Pagula.
Like Terry Pagula previously was very fond of Zemgis Gurgonsons.
And that's why every year Trade Deadline would roll around and go, oh yeah, the swords are
going to trade Gurgonsles and he never went. I gotta know if Pagula actively ever overruled the trade, but when your
owner gets married to a player, obviously it's more difficult for a manager to
make that move. I'm told that Terry Pagula is a huge fan of JJ
Paterka.
Are there flaws in his game?
Obviously.
Is there interest around the NHL?
Obviously.
I'm just told that maybe a complicating factor
in the JJ Paterka deal, the owner's a huge fan.
Tarapagula's a big fan of this player.
Yeah, well I mean, maybe Berkey will have some answers
on this as well as he's ready here,
and I'll throw this to you
He's able to do this, but I just want to throw out you said the other day these guys building up players
Time to bring in the star player Buffalo. I look right now
fourth last in the NHL some good players coming up in this draft Jeff I
Think that every draft has good players one of my pet peeves is always when people say,
oh this isn't a good draft. How do you know? We're talking like five years out. Let's get
Brian Burke here on this conversation. Every Friday our man Burke stops by. This Friday is
no different. He is on the sheet. He is Brian Burke and he joins me now. Burke, how are you today?
I'm good thanks. The pleasure is always mine. So a couple of things initially to go over and we saw the old Hartford Whalers jerseys
on the Carolina Hurricanes back yesterday.
I love it, love it, love it, love it, love it, love it.
Okay, let's just start there then.
Let's just start there.
I was hoping you're gonna be in a good mood about this one.
So let's just begin.
I love that jersey.
I love that color.
I love that logo.
I love everything about the Hartford Whalers,
other than they don't exist. But when you saw that last night and when you saw
Yosperry Khatkyanyemi fight Dylan Cousins off the draw in that Hartford
Whalers jersey, is that Tory Robertson or is that is that Miss Helene? Oh my
goodness, I can't believe he's actually fighting. What went through your mind?
Like when you saw the jersey saw that fight out the faceoff with Ted Kenyami
Well, if you go back and look you may be able to dig up some footage of this
We switched the uniform to Navy blue. Yeah with blue and green
We want a Navy blue Navy such a good field color and so few teams use Navy blue as a field color
and so few teams use navy blue as a field color. So we had sweaters, uniforms made up with navy blue
with the white and different color green lettering on them.
We switched them and when they go back
and look at the other ones,
they look a little too green to me,
but they still look sensational.
And it's a shame the team isn't there,
but they could never go back there in my view. Yeah, it was a difficult parting by the end
and the team ended up moving to Carolina in 1997.
But just, I don't know how much of that game
you were able to catch, but like,
I'm not gonna ask you specifically about the fight, but-
I love the fight.
Yeah?
I love the fight.
What's wrong with the fight? Nothing's wrong with the fight, but. I love the fight. Yeah. I love the fight. What's, what's wrong with the fight?
Nothing's wrong with the fight.
I'm just saying like, here we are a week out of Kachuk versus Hegel,
more than a week out.
And now the Sabres and the Hartford-Waylor shades of the old Adams
division are throwing down at the, at the start of the faceoff.
Like, I love it.
Like I remember back in, I can't remember what year it was, that San
Jose Anaheim series with Getslaff fighting Joe Thornton off the draw in game three,
I want to say.
It's just like an added bit of spice.
And you hear Kurt Kenyami when he's interviewed, um, after one of the periods
and he said, yeah, you know, we just wanted to get the crowd going right away.
Like I loved everything about that moment.
And listen, good on you,
Sperry, Cot, Kenyami. You know, he, he, he really, and Dylan Cousins can fight, he caught
Cousins with a couple of big rights.
It was great. I hope it doesn't become part of the script though. It's okay. Occasionally,
I don't want to start every game that way. It was a, uh, settling a score is fine. Then
the crowd going once in a while is fine. One wants a steady diet of this.
It's cool because it's unique or rare.
Okay, a couple of things around the NHL.
The Buffalo Sabres were in action last night,
as we mentioned, against the Hartford Whalers
slash Carolina Hurricanes.
And I was making the point, I'm not sure if you heard that,
I look at the Buffalo Sabres and I say,
I like a lot of these players.
I just don't like them all together on this team.
A lot of young players and they haven't been able
to find the right veteran mix to go with it.
It seems as if everybody's playing one position higher
than they should.
If you're running a team like this,
and this team doesn't need draft picks anymore,
like they're done with picks and prospects.
Like, what do you do?
Like how difficult is it to get a team to the next level?
Like the Buffalo Sabres have been trying to do now
for a couple of years.
Well, first off, if I overheard the first part of the show,
if the owners tell them who to draft or who to keep,
that's a huge mistake.
They'll never sort it out. The owner has
to stay out of that stuff. Whether he likes players or not, whether he gets close to them or not,
the owner has to stay out of that or they'll never sort it out. That being said, I agree with what
you said, Jeff. You gotta have the right people at the right seats at the dinner table. It's not
necessarily the right people have to also be in the right seats. You might have the right people,
but they're never gonna want to list
who are at the right seats at the dinner table.
And they're not in the right seats.
There's a lot wrong.
There's a lot right with that team.
Devin's done a good job putting those players in place,
but the sum of the parts is not equal to the whole.
Buffalo's in an interesting position right now,
one week out of trade deadline and it's on everybody interesting position right now, one week out of trade deadline
and it's on everybody's minds right now.
Take us into like a,
take us into a team boardroom here.
You're one week out of trade deadline,
you've already had a lot of your meetings.
Like what are teams going through right now?
Like give us, give us a dynamic.
Like as a manager, do you have enough information
by the time like you're a week out of deadline to be confident in knowing exactly what you need, how you're going to get it and where you're going to get it?
Well, if you don't have that blueprint done already, you're not doing your job in my view.
First off, someday, not today, because we don't have time. I'll tell you a story about the trade deadline.
When we were in Tampa and the Pittsburgh Penguins moved a couple of guys.
That was not much fun for anyone.
I'll tell you that story another time.
Basically, it depends if your team is on the road, most guys set up their war room at home
anyway and just let the team go on the road.
If the team is home, you've got everyone in the room, all the people that you need in
the room, all people that you need in the room. You have one person watching
sports night, one person watching TSN, watching like hawks, picking up news. And then you got all
the pro scouts in the room, all the people that have decision-making ability, your video guys,
in case you want to see any film, all your analytics people. And so the GM can react in a heartbeat.
Most of the work is done on draft right now,
for trade deadline in advance.
You got a lot of research, a lot of work done
up until that time, but sometimes you gotta pivot quickly,
and those people have to be ready to give their answers
in 30 or 90 seconds.
Would you do this?
Your favorite- It's pretty cool.
I was going to say like, you know, we're, we're
everybody in, I mean, everybody in sports right
now is sort of clamoring for the let's present
the behind the scenes look.
I know we'll never get a, we'll never get a,
uh, an Amazon series on this is what, what,
this is what arbitration hearings are like.
Although that would be dynamite television.
Also being around boardrooms where you're talking to pro scouts and saying, would you
do this?
Would you do that?
What's this play like?
All of that stuff is Goldberg-y.
If you watch the movie Draft Day with Kevin Costner, a lot of that's very realistic.
A lot of it's garbage.
A lot of it's very realistic. A lot of it's garbage. A lot of it's very realistic too. The scenes in the war room and their draft is different, obviously.
It might not be that different going forward, but I hope not.
Anyway, a lot of those things are realistic.
That's what it is like.
You're huddling around in a room, done all your research, got all your lists ready to go.
You've done some work.
And so you're probably got
three or four potential deals going that if this happens,
you would still do this for a draft pick
or if this happens, you still trade this defenseman
and you have to wait and see what comes to light.
But you've probably done, not probably.
If you're any good at your job,
you've done a lot of work leading up to this moment.
You know the players that are available,
what the price tags are,
and you're waiting for the price tag to come down.
True or false?
No, actually, let me give you a scenario here.
Where do managers make more mistakes,
trade deadline or free agency?
Both.
50-
It's not an answer.
Sure it is.
You'd have to quantify it.
I'd say more on trade deadline because there's so many teams.
It's an unrealistic mathematical proposition. 20 teams are going to make deals that impact
their ability to win and only three or four have a legitimate chance of winning. So there's groups
of teams. The teams that think they're close, you need a Chris Barner, you win a cup. Teams
that think they're close and look for one big piece, you want a cup. Teams that think they're close, you're looking for one big piece.
That's one group of teams.
There's other that have missed the playoffs for a few years.
They're looking to just get in.
Those price tags are lower, but they're still important.
And there's a group that have not advanced beyond the first round.
They're trying to get some help to get to the second round.
So there's really three, four groups of teams in there.
And then the sellers, they're hopelessly out
and just trying to get the last bit of flesh
out of the victim, if you will.
So it's an interesting dynamic.
A couple of questions from the chat.
Mr. Public Pain submits this one to you, Berkey.
Who was, I think I might know who you might
answer this one.
Let's see.
Who was the funniest flame when you were in Calgary?
Funniest flame in Calgary, I'd say Dave Ravitch.
Really eh?
Big safe Dave?
Big safe.
No way.
He's one of the funniest guys I ever met in my life.
Hilarious.
And he's chirping the whole practice. Heops the puck, yells at Gio,
oh nice shot Luther.
Things have to go in and you got lucky.
He chirps the whole practice. So I'd say big save Dave.
I kind of thought, here's what I thought, because I know like,
you're like me, like I have an appreciation for grumpy people.
I thought you were going to say Sam Bennett. I really did
Well Sam's not funny. His nickname is grumpy. I call him grumpy to this day. He's a grumpy guy
He wakes up sour. He goes to bed sour never has any fun at all. See I like that
I like being around people like that. See that to me is entertaining the guy that complains about the coffee all day
I like that guy want to be around that well those guys those guys are important you get it
You can be as grumpy as you want the two grumpy skies there ever Chris Primer and Ryan
Kessler the two grumpy skies I ever had miserable
Miserable woke up miserable went to bed miserable coffee's cold foods not good
Everything sucks the flights bumpy
Everything sucks, but you bumpy, everything sucks.
But you get away with it.
You're a good enough player like grumpy, like Sam Bannon, like Ryan
Kessler, like, like Chris prior.
You get away with it when you play like they did.
Uh, another question here from Derek Burst.
Can you ask Berkey what he would do in the Seth Jones situation as GM?
Now, I think the conversation is back on again with Chicago and
Dallas for Seth Jones.
We'll, we'll see where that ends up.
He's got a lot of term.
It's like 36 million.
Once the, once the bonus is paid on July 1st for the next five years,
like it's, it's, it's a lot of money here.
And Seth Jones is openly talking about, you know, needing a change of scenery.
After the game really around this week, he talked about how we haven't improved from day one. Like
he's, it's at the point now where the player is openly lobbying to get out of this situation.
You're Kyle Davidson. What do you do in this situation? And do you have any precedent in
your past for that, Berkey? Well, first off, I'm not I like Seth Jones.
He's a real good guy and he's had a good career, but he hasn't.
He's in no position to complain about how the Blackhawks have played
since he got there in my view.
I don't think he's helping them win at all.
And you have a much harder, much better position to argue.
I'd like to get out of here.
I'm sick of losing.
If you have been competing harder the last couple of years, I accept that to get out of here. I'm sick of losing if you have been competing harder the last couple years
I am Seth that's to get his game back reengaged before he can make any demands at all
I can't imagine there's much of a market for Seth Jones at the way he's playing right now at that kind of money
Mm-hmm a couple of things around the NHL
The Vancouver Canucks, I'm not sure if he had a chance to watch Vancouver Anaheim last night, Canucks go up two nothing.
Tyler Myers, by the way, maybe the best period
he's had all season, he was fantastic.
Goal in an assist, slapshot goal, great assist,
made the rush, the whole deal.
They squander that, they end up losing five to two.
Elias Pedersen doesn't get a single offensive zone
face off in the game.
And you're wondering about Vancouver in advance of trade deadline.
And I want to frame this this way.
It very much feels like Jim Mutherford, Patrick Alveen need to do whatever
it's going to take to hang on to Quinn Hughes.
Does that complicate things like trade deadline where if it looks like you're taking a step
back to Quinn Hughes, he can say, look, I'm at a place in my career where I've gone through
a rebuild.
I'm not going to go through it again.
Like this one's, this one's a, this one's like it's some, some tricky toe dragging here
to make this situation work in Vancouver.
Yeah.
I think that's right.
I think when you have a superstar, which what which Quinn Hughes is and make no mistake about people
He's one of the best defensemen in the league. He plays a lot of late-night games people step and watch him
So he doesn't get the credit he's do I felt that was true a lot of my players when I worked in Anaheim and Vancouver
They didn't get the credit they were due because no one watched him play
1030 people turn off the TV a lot of people do especially as you get older so to me he is a top player he will have a lot to say about what happens going forward but Jimmy and Patrick are they're used to their big riverboat cameras which means not silly or stupid rest but they're very risk taking guys both of them they will do they get a chance to make a big deal and make a splash or get better, they will.
See, that's what I think in advance of trade deadline here.
There's the, okay, Brock Bester's on the expiring deal,
there's the hang up on term.
Do they let them walk away?
Do they try to get something for them?
I keep saying to myself, like Vancouver,
and listen, this is writing concert
with ownership as well.
Vancouver is close. I know Calgary is knocking on the door a little bit.
St.
Louis is playing well.
Uh, Utah is only a couple of points away, but this is going to be an interesting race
for that final wild card spot in the, in the, in the Western conference.
And if you're the Vancouver Canucks, like they're not going to take a step back.
Like all they're going to try to do is improve here.
They're not, they're not sliding backwards at all.
Well, I think they've been surprised or disappointed by the
goaltending things they saw at the Lankan.
It's been good, but I think they thought they'd get damn cool for the whole year.
Yeah.
And he's had trouble getting healthy.
So, um, look, they're not, they're going to get their ass kicked.
Whoever they play, if they do get in the first round,
they're gonna get their ass kicked anyway.
So I don't care what kind of moves they make and get better.
The West is too strong for a team to get in the eighth spot
and do anything but pray.
But that, Basia, that's where ownership steps in and says,
you know what here, like, I'm still reeling a little bit
from COVID, I'd like
to make that money up. Thank you very much. We'll take the couple of home dates in the
playoffs.
Yeah, they will, except that the first few home gates are full. The way the playoff pool
works, you don't get, you don't see a lot of money from those first couple of playoff
games. Trust me.
I'm not sure if you caught any of the Islanders and Bruins game last night, but
there's one moment, um, that I want to focus on.
And it's a, it's a Brock Nelson interference
call, but it's what happens is Brock Nelson is
shading Matthew Poitras out along the boards.
Islanders backup netminder, um, Jacob
Skarak, uh, opens up the gate thinking Holmstrom's coming off,
probably doesn't see Brock Nelson. The gate is open and Poitras gets hammered into the boards
with the open gate. And you just, you hate to see it, you cringe. I mean, Poitras is down for a
while, both the Bruins trainer, Islanders trainer, on and right away trying to help.
You know, there have been some people
that have pointed out before that it's too dangerous
in a game like this to have gates
for players to come in and out.
But then on the other hand, I say to myself,
you know, if you get rid of the gates,
then you have players jumping over the boards,
that's a lot of skates in the air.
And that's another recipe for disaster.
Essentially, Berkey, what I'm saying is I don't have a safe way for players to come on the ice and off the ice.
I'm looking for a third option here.
Is there one?
Well, you can do it.
They do them across.
So you get the little ZOX standing before you can come on.
But yeah, I'm not in favor of that.
Look, it's not, I put this rule in when I was in Vancouver.
So probably 20 years ago that we keep the doors closed during play
and not open them unless there's a whistle.
I still believe we should do that.
Now, at the time, Neal Smith, the steering ranger, said to me,
I was Steve Creight again, over the board, said to see you play for me.
They're all kidding aside, there's not skates flying up and down.
When you get off there, you jump off of the board, you're not kicking your feet up any
iron nav too.
Just take them over the boards and get on.
It's not dangerous to me at all.
It's crazy that Plot just couldn't have got hurt on a play like that when we had a rule
change proposed
25 years ago probably to change this I
There's not much I think the league gets wrong the bear hug this one
The rule changes have been proposed 20 years ago and have not been enacted that I think should have been I want to go over the bear hug with our audience here in a couple of seconds
But but further on that one whenever I've asked anyone at the NHL about, uh, about the gates,
that is the argument the other way is, is too
many skates, too many skates in the air.
If there's like a scrum, scrum along the boards
and someone's jumping off and we all know when
we've, we've all seen the skate disasters.
And, um, again, like I don't have a perfect way.
I know that as it, like, this is one of the most,
this is one of the most unique features of hockey is that you change personnel while the play is going on.
You don't do this in basketball.
You don't do this in football.
You don't do this in baseball.
It's a unique aspect of the sport that I want to keep.
I think we're all the same way.
I just don't know how to make it safe.
Maybe it's just something you got to live with and say like every now and then you're gonna have a plot twist
in an injury. Yeah and that's it that's the answer to the guys who like me want
to change the rule is we're talking one or two injuries a year. Usually not that
serious and usually people yell people on the bench yell the doors open. Players
are very self-aware and they'll holler at players hey heads up heads up and so we and Now, if you go back, I played in Hershey when I first turned pro. The gates, the doors to the gates, the gates to the benches opened out.
Oh, I knew.
So first of all, that's illegal now.
But secondly, that's bricky.
That's insane.
That's completely, you're just asking for injuries.
That's ridiculous.
People would do it intentionally.
It opened the door when someone was getting rubbed out, squeezed in.
So it was, you're talking about a little war zone stuff there.
Well, I remember, you know, Michael Pecca, and I remember he caught Tye Domi with this one once.
Pecca, if he felt that he could lay a hit on a guy in a neutral zone, he's in the penalty box,
he would stay in like an extra second and just time it. So as soon as he got out of the box,
the guy would be coming up the wing. He just laid out Domi in a Buffalo Toronto game like that once he was like
the master of that surprise.
But then like Berkey opening a gate is a little bit different than Michael
Pekka hanging out in the penalty box for a couple of extra seconds.
Yeah.
Michael Pekka got a few guys that way.
It was pretty good.
It had pretty genius.
It took some guts to stay on the box learning and needed to, to get a the
truth I was playing for the Springfield Indians and they were very careful about my ice time.
I didn't get much, the coach didn't like me.
I didn't get much ice time in there.
Uh, okay.
You mentioned the bear hug a second ago.
And for those that don't know about the, uh, the Berkey bear hug, uh, you
may hear it described and say, hold on a second, that's holding.
What's the bear hug Berkey?
Well, you see it probably 20 times a year, especially now with the younger
players, they'll turn their back on an oncoming defenseman.
It's basically, it could happen anywhere on the ice, but basically
it's a defenseman coming in on a forward.
Forward turns, tries to come back and exposes his numbers.
And we allow that defenseman to finish that hit.
And so he can't finish it too hard or he still gets nailed by the player's safety,
but he's allowed to finish that hit and you get some ugly looking and near disastrous injuries.
So to me, I'd like the player to be able to put his hands on that player's shoulders or back,
take him in, not propel him in like a billiard ball,
but take him in with his hands up and then release instantly.
Had quite a bit of support, again, that's 25 years ago,
but it never got past the...
Every time I see a billiard ball hit or hitting the numbers,
I'm like, why don't we do this?
Now I saw the old man on the lawn.
Get off my yard.
But the thing is that that's the game now.
It's not... Brooke, you and I have talked about this for years.
Like it's not a contact sport.
It's a collision sport.
Like that's just, that's just the, the nature of the game right now.
And I know that coming out of the 0405 is get rid of hooking and holding and all of
that, but like there was more rubbing then.
And somewhere along the way, and listen, you were there for it, um, to
see it, but somewhere along the way we changed body checking into hitting.
Like I can recall like, like breaking back when you were playing in Maine, for
example, puck would go into the corner.
It would be puck first, body second.
Now it's body first.
And if you get the puck, well, that's a bonus.
Like when, when did it, when did it change? I think it's been complicated by the fact you get the puck, well, that's a bonus. Like, when did it when did it change?
I think it's been complicated by the fact that the young players
don't know any better about the turn back at the last second.
Yeah. The twins scared the twins scared the hell out of me when I had them.
They would do that all the time.
I'd be like one of you guys to end up with a broken neck.
You can't do that. Yeah.
And that's where when I was a player, if you did turn your back,
but you didn't very often,
you would feel both hands on your shoulder blades and the player would take you in, but he wouldn't propel you in.
That's why I think we should change that rule back. But it has no support.
I've gotten nowhere with zero.
Everyone's rolling their eyes right now and saying,
well there goes Berkey on the bear hug again.
But how long did it mean?
It took you a long time to get the GM of the Year award in.
Yeah, they were talking about that all the time though, that whole time, the whole 20 years it took.
No one's talking about this except you and me.
Hey, let me, you know, speaking of the GM of the Year award, I brought your name up the other day.
Because I was having a conversation with someone about it and I said, you know, the most impressive GM work this season is by someone who's
not even a GM in the NHL right now.
And that's Brian McClellan of the Washington Capitals.
Like he made all of those moves and then handed it off to Chris Patrick.
I want to say like middle of July last year, but Brian McClellan put the overwhelmingly lion's share
of those players on the Washington Capitals, made the hires, made the trades, the free agents,
like all of it, and then got himself promoted and Chris Patrick runs it now. And I brought up the
point that, I mean, you had mentioned this to me before as well, in 2010, the first year of the GM award,
one person voted for Dale Tallon, who was not a general manager at that time with Chicago. It was Stan Bowman.
But when you look at the GM of the year this year, would you be with me in saying that Brian McClellan,
the Washington Capitals, who's no longer the GM, has a legitimate case for the GM of the year.
And he has an overwhelming case, but I'm pretty sure the lead criteria will say that he's not
eligible. He'll get the proper accolades. If Chris wins it, Brian will get the,
Mack will get the proper accolades. People know who made the decisions here.
You know, difference in Joe Sackett, winning it all and turning it over to his
guys.
So to me, I don't think people have been,
I never cared who got the credit for as
long as we got to win.
Uh, a couple of more things here before
you, uh, we bid you good afternoon.
Um, the Toronto Maple Leafs, uh, and Brad
true living, uh, there's a lot of decisions
in the, the off seasons, certainly for true
living and you think of Marner and you think of John Tavares, but in advance of trade deadline, we're
all wondering about the pieces they have available,
what they deem necessary.
You know, the playoffs roll around and as much
as everyone complains about the defense, the
issue seems to be, they can't score enough
goals in the post season.
If you're Brad true living, what's going
through your mind a week out here in what's
got to be a goal for a year. Well, what's going through your mind a week out here?
And what's gotta be a goal for a year.
Well, it's a goal for a year.
Cause that's what they do.
And they had the goal setting.
If they're both healthy, their goal setting is good enough.
First time I think that they're since they Brad's been there certainly, but in
the last five years, maybe where they feel their goal setting is good enough to
win a few rounds and it is if they're both healthy, they've both been really good, but they've both been hurt too. I
They're going into thinking that they need depth more than anything really top heavy
You probably need some size to complain and one is one of the center positions and maybe a defenseman
But McCabe has really come on. He's really changed things with their
With their defense and really helped them.
If Tad is not banged up too badly, which it doesn't look like he is, they got a good shot this year, I think.
Team, we'll end on this one. The team that you are most interested in around deadline,
either as buyers or sellers. I already threw Buffalo out there. They have the potential to
do something big here, should Kevin Adams decide. But is there a team that really has your interest this year at Deadline?
I mean you've walked in those shoes before
Well, the ones the ones that interest me are the ones that are maybe in maybe out
They're not sure if they're buying or selling they like st. Louis, Detroit
Detroit Columbus they're all
Helplessly out hopelessly out of it even two weeks ago then st. Louis ones four or five in a row Yeah. Hopefully it'll be clearer to some of these teams in the meantime, but if not, they're going to hold their breath and take a punch here on some of these deals.
That's our say Islanders, Rangers are all close.
Tell you what, you know, uh, Columbus and Detroit chum the waters yesterday.
Columbus looked real good, Berkey.
Columbus looked real good in that case.
I guess one of those teams that everyone, you know, considering everything that
happened, um, with the Goudreau family, uh, at the beginning of the beginning of the season, it's an easy team for every market to cheer for.
You cheer for your home team, you cheer for the Blue Jackets, and you cheer
for the Calgary Flames because of the Goudreau family.
Brooke, you have a wonderful weekend. Anything major in store for you this weekend?
Well, the Marlies. I've been to one Marlies game this year.
I'm looking forward to seeing them again.
See the Marlies play tomorrow at four.
I always like, speaking of Marlies,
I always love those ads.
There was this ad, folks,
that they used to be for the Toronto Marlies
when Bricky was running the Maple Leafs
and it was Dallas Aikens talking.
And you talked about like,
there's a short distance between like a bus ride from the Air Canada Center
to the Rico Coliseum.
And there was a shot of you with your arms crossed
up in the, up in the, just like,
I don't know how much Dallas Aikens loves you.
It's like, there's like, this is this perfect visual
of Brian Burke and Dallas Aikens with the Toronto Marlies.
Those were some, those were some fun days.
Well, we had one one-way, Jeff Finger was there only one way and we didn't sign him, Cliff signed him before I got there. and Syracuse with John, we had great crowds and great people.
Jay Gardner and awesome category.
It's some really good young players.
Jay Rose, they're a really good group of guys.
Is that stanchion goal that crushed?
Remember that?
Mike Koska.
Mike Koska, if you don't know who Mike Koska is,
do a Google images search folks
and have a look at Mike Koska.
Mike Koska, I always maintain, Berkey,
is the most, you're gonna know what I mean by this,
the most hockey-looking player of all time.
Like the hair, the scraggly beard, like the whole,
like every time I looked at Mike Koska,
I said he looks like a throwback player from the 70s.
He does, he probably still does too.
We signed him for that season.
He was great practice.
A great kid too.
Mike Koska.
I never thought when I woke up I'd hear that name today.
That's awesome.
Okay.
I'm in a good mood.
Berkey, you're the best.
We will talk in seven days, pal.
Okay.
Thank you. There he is, Brian Burke, weekly here on the Sheet.
A lot of things there.
Do we, Zach, can you do a quick Google image search on Mike Koska just so everyone has
a good idea?
I like what I'm talking about when I say like, he looks like a hockey player.
Like he is a,
Quintus said he got the blonde hair,
like a little bit of length,
but kind of like you, Philly, a little bit,
but like he's a little bit more cleaned up
and he's a better player.
No offense.
Correct on both accounts.
Also fun fact, Mike Koska, Aurora Tiger.
Oh, did he play there in the OJ?
Yes, yes. I think I watched him. I think he might have won the RBC cup with the Aurora Tigers.
I think that's, I think that timeline lines up. Yeah, yeah. I'll get the picture in here for everybody.
Okay grab a picture of Mike Koska. One point that I did want to make here, a couple of things.
picture of Mike Koska. One point that I did want to make here,
a couple of things.
One, in that Vancouver Anaheim game.
Now, it's only been recently,
like the last five or six games really,
that I've watched, like a lot of Anaheim ducks,
and they played well.
But every game that I watch,
is it just me or is Jackson Lacombe
already the best player on the team?
Like when you look at like at the players from the rebuild,
like whether it's Leo Carlson and Carter Goche and Mason McTavish and Olin Zellweger, Pavel Mintchikov,
like all of these guys, game in, game out.
And yesterday scored a gorgeous goal, it just like froze Quinn Hughes, and then
scored on Artur Shilovs, who didn't have the best possible game for Artur Shilovs here,
which we all wonder about his future in the NHL right now at least.
But Game In Game Out, he looks like the best player.
Now two things, one you could say wow that's
great Anaheim's got a great one in Jackson
LeCombe's second round pick and like okay so it's a little bit of found money
there and so good on them but then you say to yourself if Jackson LeCombe is the
best player in the rebuilt maybe the rebuild is in as far along as you
might have thought.
But I don't know, every time I watch Anaheim, they're like,
oh, Jackson LeCom, awesome. Jackson LeCom, not making a mistake.
Jackson LeCom, making a great play.
I don't know, anyone else watch Anaheim all year
and come to the same conclusion, or is it just me from watching the last six games?
I unfortunately feel like maybe I haven't watched Anaheim quite as much as you have.
Like remember that conversation with the Lachries?
It's only been Lachries.
Talking about you breaking down tape of the San Jose Sharks.
I do watch a lot of San Jose.
I do watch a lot of the Sharks.
Trust me, when I say that they're bad team, like trust me, I've watched a lot of San
Jose Sharks games.
They're just like exciting new toy, but like watch what happens next year.
When everyone's cynical and you realize that rebuilds take a long time, it's like, yeah, you're one year away from being the Chicago Blackhawks.
And I did mention that Seth Jones and Chicago and Dallas over Seth Jones, I do think that that's, I think that there's at least conversation there
between the two again.
See where it ends up.
I think the tough thing is the cap gymnastics
that I have to go on with that contract.
It's a big one.
You like the mutual termination idea.
Loved it, loved it.
I was all in on that one.
I was yesterday, go through the show again,
I was trying to get some clips ready and then I was watching that part back and I'm all the way in on the mutual termination.
It feels weird but it makes sense if he can get 7 million times 5 somewhere.
Like if the agent, so he's with CAA, like if CAA thinks he can get 7 times 5 somewhere, Do the mutual termination, get the new contract,
the money's the same, he's in a healthier place,
place that he wants to be, Chicago gets out
from underneath the weight of that deal.
I don't know, I keep thinking to myself,
like what am I missing here?
Like is there one part of this thing that I'm missing?
Well, cause then even in that case,
like someone brought up yesterday, well, would
the PA allow that or would the NHL allow that?
Why wouldn't they?
If there's a new agreed contract on the other side, it cares.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, once upon a time, like when Bob Goodenow ran the union, like there'd be like, not a
fricking chance.
You're taking every dime from every, you know, from every team that you can.
There's not going to be no mutual termination.
I don't care what you think is out there.
Oh man, those good now, those good nowadays is this is before your time,
but it was spectacular.
So Bob Goodenow and Ian Pulver used to run the union and they would control free
agent day. Like they would have like, look at this, I don't know if they had like a
board in the office, but like they had the whole strategy And all the agents all like locked in on this one
This player is gonna sign for this much which means this player is gonna sign for this much and it was like
Honestly, it was like a and it just drive the NHL crazy
Obviously, but it was almost like Bob Goodenowney and Pulver were like conducting a symphony like this guy's gonna get this
Number that guy's gonna get that number and it would all just sort of fall like dominoes.
It was brilliant and everybody got super rich.
And then the NHL locked everybody out.
And they wanted to get two things.
They wanted to get a salary cap and they wanted to get the head of Bob Goodenow and they got both.
And somehow the NHL Players Association agreed to a deal in July.
Zero pressure point, just did it.
A story for another day.
Can you tell I'm so fascinated by the 0405?
Look at that, my, oh bless you, Mike Koska.
Look at, I, listen, if you are listening, by the way,
on Spotify, Apple pods, whatever,
just check out the archive and get to, are we like minute 54 of the show?
Look at that beautiful man
Look at that hockey player nice with them with the the fly catching mouth to look at
Great picture you captured there
Tell me that's not the best like hockey I thought this was the best hockey looking picture
of Mike Koska as well.
Yeah, this is a good one.
That's an awesome picture.
Oh, that's so good.
Good for you, Philly.
Oh, I'm so proud of you.
Oh, you picked a great one.
You really, really did.
I gotta find, there's a picture of me
that came out recently on playing,
this is what I look like.
Mike Koska is what I look like Mike Tosca is what I look like and it's not surprising
But yeah, not shocking at all. Mr. Public Pain says yeah, Jeff like a symphony until the roof collapsed LOL
Hey, you want to hear a story? Did I tell you this?
Speaking of roof collapsed. Thank you. Mr. Public Pain in the chat
When we were in Ottawa for the World Juniors, you know the garage across the street from where we stayed?
Yeah, the one across from the place where we had two fire alarms go off.
Yeah, yeah. Like, right across from our hotel, the parking garage we were at collapsed.
It was like four or five days ago.
Yeah.
I saw right where my car would have been every day.
And I saw it too.
I saw a storyline that was like, um, parking garage in Ottawa collapses under snow.
And I was like, Oh, that would be crazy if it was our parking garage.
I swear. And I clicked on it and I was like oh, that would be crazy if it was our parking garage
Clicked on it, and I was like What?
So freaking party guys, but they're like a month ago, okay?
Hey partner for seven days
We're there for a week. I slept the car there. Yeah
Good but us man that went down hard to scary yep, okay?

I wanna get in an email here
because there's a video attached to it
before we go over the games that I,
oh by the way, anything specific
or pacific as we say in the Atlantic about the chat today
you think we should go over before we get to this email?
Email by the way, she's at the nationnetwork.com.
Yeah, you answered most of the questions there that were sent in, some of the best ones for
Berkey or had Berkey answer them.
So I think we pretty much covered that and everyone just kind of making some comments
about stuff Berkey said.
But otherwise, otherwise chat was pretty well behaved today as much as they could be.
It's the weekend.
Come on.
Johnny Lazarus is in LERV this is big around
nation network. Laz being in love that's she's the one. She's the one boys that's the line

lad. You did? I watched him in Aurora yeah. As a Tiger who was that Marty
Williamson coached that team who's now coaching no that would have been was
that after that would have been after that would have been after because Marty probably would have been agra by then

John Bartlett play by play voice hockey night in Canada. Yeah, Bart's was an aura tiger
And then he got the his first job was doing Barry Colts games play-by-play it's a very Canadian conversation we're
having here by yeah seriously Jerome Dupont oh yeah yeah yeah legend legend in
the OG oh yeah the sheet at the nation network.com. Couple things. One, this from Brad. Couple things.
At least here in Erie, sour cream glazed are a thing.
I had them when I grabbed the drink
when Roll Up to Win started a few days ago,
which obviously, yes, the US has the game as well,
but our prizes are different.
Speaking of which, it's a good way to transition us here.
We wanna get to this goal in a second.
But Canada, your favorite contest is back.
Roll up to win is back at Tim Hortons.
And that means you could win millions of amazing prizes
with just the swipe of a thumb.

Play Roll Up to win on the Tim's app.
Now rules apply Canada only.
So sorry, Brad and Erie, no purchase necessary.
Visit the Tim's app for details.
Now with that one, I want to get to this email here real quick here.
So we were talking the other day on the show about the triangle and the
triangle is an area. Jake Allen showed me this, the
triangle is an area for left catch goaltenders. When they put the paddle down there is a triangle
that forms, it's an open spot where shooters can shoot at, between the right skate and
the heel of the stick riding all the way up to where the stick crosses over with the pad. It creates a triangle and where a lot of times you see players shooting at a
shooting and scoring between the legs. The announcer will say, Oh,
he's shot five hole. I guess technically he did,
but really where shooters are aiming now. And Alan said, it might've been,
he said that he really noticed there was a lot of German hockey players.
I'm guessing Tim Stutzelow would have been one.
Players are shooting at the right skate.
I tell my kids this now.
You know what? You come in, you look for the triangle first and then just fire it along the ice at the right skate.
At the right skate and it'll go in.
And so Nick Prota emails this in. new one six or seven years ago after he stopped using the dead controller high glove move that was really good Zuccarello started coming in from a sharp
left angle and picking that spot Zuc scored it on several times until one
time he missed his spot and then started then he started a new move for future
shout shootouts love the show from an old MVSW fan neck PS Michael Roosevelt
random penguin I want to go over random penguin in a couple of seconds but can we show the the Matt Zuccarello just so everyone has
an idea we show this with Pat Kane in the Anaheim game on Sunday let's show
Matt Zuccarello this is Matt Zuccarello shooting at that triangle this is back
when Zuccarello was a Ranger and again playing against the Anaheim Docs there's
the triangle and there's the shot again what is about players shooting triangle
on on goaltenders but it's Lucas Dostal with Patrick Kane that we just showed
now poor John Kam... who is it there? John Gibson. So it's that triangle spot
between the heel of the stick, there it is, opens up and players find it fast.
Goalies are wise too. Look at the heel, look at the triangle appear and it goes in. Coaches
tell your kids shoot at the right skate. Shoot at the right skate. You know kids
come in all want to go bar down, their warm-ups and all that and playing
against coltenders and scrimmages and stuff. Shoot at the right skate. You will
especially like minor youth hockey. I know everybody wants to do a tickle the bar and all that you're probably the same in your beer league you dope yeah
I'm looking at you Zach did you oh yeah right skate or bar bar how much your
buddy Owen how many block shots for Owen yesterday you're telling me like five
six maybe stupid defensive clinic last night god. Okay so the random penguin thing, Michael Roosevelt
random penguin. So that is something that Wyszynski and I, I don't know just
started on the podcast one day. There was a moment where two book publishers came
together. Random House and Penguin Books. And they hadn't they hadn't come up with
a name yet. They ended up
going Random House Penguin. But how great would it have been just to have Random
Penguin as your book publisher's name to which everybody just started sending in
like Zareli Zalapski, Jim Pack or in this case Michael Roosevelt. It just became
Random Penguin all throughout the show
whenever Greg and I were together.
So if anybody feels the need in the chat
or by email next Tuesday when Wyshynsky's on,
just send in Random Penguin,
Rick Keough, Ron Stockhouse, go for it,
John Cullen, just keep it, Warren Young,
we can just keep going.
All these old Pittsburgh Penguins names,
Denny Haran, go for it. Send them all in. Random Penguin every Tuesday.
Greg Wyshynski. Got it? You have a random penguin that comes to mind when I think
say Pittsburgh Penguins from the past. What's the first player off the top of
your mind when I say random penguin? Jake Hofffield. Nick Bonino. Nick Bonino.
Great one. Harner Ryan Singh with the great call. That's one of the best, yes, yes, exactly.
Harner-Ryan Singh.
That was one of the best goal calls of all time.
It really, really was.
Alright, games tonight.
We've only got three of them, but our boy Zach
is going to be busy.
Better get the freaking promos out on time
though, Zach, still.
Before you do your Leafy's game.
FanDuel, proud to connect fans to the major sports moments that matter to them.
Roster updates, as always, from daily faceoff fantasy, Twitter X feed, and a couple of things
here for tonight's games.
As you mentioned, it is a big one at MSG.
Think of our friend Zach here, who's handling the pre and the post for the Toronto Maple
Leafs and the New York Rangers. I like the staggered times tonight this is great. So
you got the Rangers and the Maple Leafs at 7. You got the Kings and the Stars at
8 and you got Minnesota Colorado ball arena at 9. A couple of things from
Toronto and New York. Game one without Adam Fox. For the New York Rangers,
Igor Shosturkin starts, Keandre Miller game time decision lower body injury there
JT Miller
Game time decision it is an illness there the sniffles Anthony Stolar starts for your Zach Phillips Toronto Maple Leafs
Ryan Reeves is in can you think of a reason why Craig Berube will want Ryan Reeves in the game against the New York Rangers?
Hmm reason why Craig Berube would want Ryan Reeves in in the game against the New York Rangers hmmm. Alex Steeves is out and it looks like your boy Willie Neelander is in.
Do you have a thought on all this or do you want to spoil the pregame?
No I put out the pregame already went out before before we came on here just kind
of break down the lines I mean the Reeves thing is not surprising that kind of goes
hand in hand with I don't think Breubert was that trustworthy of Alex
Steeves after the last game against Boston and like maybe some guy wears number 73 for
the New York Rangers on the other side maybe those things go together.
I always want guys that do so well in the American Hockey League to do well in the NHL
and Steeves has been so good in the American hockey league to do well in the NHL and Steve's has been so good
In the American hockey league this year with the Marlies
Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars Jake Ottenger gets a start there Lee and Bichelle out concussion, but now good news there He's listed as day to day
This is from the hits in the Allenders game against Casey Sazekis last Saturday and Drew Doughty
LBI there lower body injury. He returns for the Los Angeles Kings tonight at American
Airlines Center, Minnesota, Colorado at ball arena. I don't know if you watched much of
that Minnesota Utah game yesterday, just a pounding. Six to one. The Minnesota Wild
lose, they've lost four of their last seven. We'll see what happens tonight against the
Colorado Avalanche. Mackenzie Blackwood starts in that one. Is there
anything that we have left off the show today? As once again we go into overtime.
Sorry if we didn't talk about the Nidelkovich. Oh dude! Went banana sandwich. He got pulled and just went full on Ron Hextall.
You want to show this thing? So he gets, what is this? This is the... after the three and a half...
Here he is against the Philadelphia Keystone State rivalry.
Dalkovich comes down.
Slam the door! Alex, there it is!
Have a bark at the coach or the bench or everybody.
Go down the tunnel.
Cool off. Go down the tunnel, cool off, and then come back. The Pittsburgh Penguins end up winning
this game in overtime and a goal by Evgeny Malikin. They beat their state rivals, the
Philadelphia Flyers, but I'm here for goalie freakouts all the time. I'm always here for
goalie freakouts. Give me goalie freakouts, always entertaining.
Smashing sticks, yelling at coaches.
Patrick Waugh is probably the most famous out of all of them.
Although, Tuca Raskin, the American hockey league
with Providence had an all-timer once upon a time.
Maybe that's my challenge to you.
For Monday, find me the best goalie freakout.
Or your favorite goalie freakout after getting hooked or maybe not getting hooked
best freak out that involved a goalie but wasn't the goalie is the uh was it vokun that's not the
best but he's oh my god keith when keith ballard slashed him in the face yeah yeah oh you remember
that a great pull yeah okay so that was with the flor Florida Panthers So well soon gives one up and Keith Ballard just had a frustration just like swinging his stick to smash it on the goalpost
Problem is Vokun's with we gotta find that for next week there. His face was just there and I'm cracking his stick
Yeah, like he's okay, so we can like laugh
Yeah, that's one of the, that one is all time.
Snapping and then the goalie's head, he's, you gotta go.
Whacking him in the face with a stick.
The worst stick in the face, speaking of that one here,
just as we just freestyle on our Friday afternoon,
sorry for boring you here guys.
Alexander Peresjogen and Garrett Stafford. This is from a Milwaukee
Hamilton game in the American Hockey League and Peresjogen ended up getting oh 20 game
suspension maybe 25. When you look at it and you think about what he did and you say like
okay if this happened in 2025 how many games would it be?
Like it's the worst. It's like the worst stick swinging in the face. The cops call a seam,
I believe too. Garrett Stafford, Alexander Parajoygan, my gift of violence to you this
weekend. Randy Workman brings up, it says, look up the gym, gym play fair coach freak out. I seen that one strips down any times
Yeah, he strips down. He goes like full hulk Hogan
Tearing his shirt like when you're on the bench, and you see your coach like lose it to the point where he is
stripping on the bench
How do you not like oh got time escapes and they just start laughing?
Like honestly that way your coach, what'd you do?
Mm-hmm. Oh, I'd be laughing.
It's ripping his clothes off.
I had, you know, like Dan Daou, I had him coach me and Midget
And this is like not a secret he would do because he speaks French, right?
So he would swear in French and say words that everyone knew what they meant in English
but in French.
But he would step down off the bench a lot of times because in Markham Village where
we played there's a bench you can step down and you'd be lower, right?
So you're not like up on the elevator.
I was there on Sunday.
And he'd pace because he'd get pissed and he'd pace back and forth and he'd swear yelling
God damn it.
It's got that, Village has those low ceilings almost and their cathedral style too.
So you couldn't do like high flips out of the zone.
Be like an instant whistle.
What a barn.
Village is still going bud.
Village is still going.
We had that back room, we were like a junior team.
It was awesome.
Awesome experience. Yeah, I see you had that back room, we were like a junior team. It was awesome. Yeah, I see you had that nice room, but like for all like the regular like minor hockey kids, like they're tiny. Under the stairs. Under the stands.
Under the stands. It's like St. Mike's. Anyway, now we're getting really, really pacific. Oh, Robbie from New York Booth says Robbie Fertoric bench throw is in my top three. Yes. Okay. You know what?
Now we got something here.
Okay. So there's the Robbie Fertorik bench throw.
There's Tommy Webster chucking sticks.
That was at a Kings, was it Calgary game?
Ooh, that's a really good one.
The Robbie Fertorik bench throw is good.
That's a good one.
I had a coach one time chuck a water bottle across the ice.
That went over well.
So there was a game, a playoff game between the New Westminster Bruins and Seattle.
This is when Jack, I want to say Jack Sangster was the coach of Seattle.
And it's tough team, just like New West always had,
like the toughest teams.
Ernie Punch-McClain was the coach.
Jack Sangster was the coach of Seattle.
They used to call them Sangsters Gangsters.
This is when the Western League was just like,
it was, every game was cowboy.
And Ernie McClain, this is a great move.
You'll love this.
So before the game, Ernie goes up to the trainer says you have one job in warm-up and the trainer's like okay he
says during warm-up I need one water bottle from the Seattle bench. Get me a
get me a water bottle that has like the Seattle logo on it. And so the trainer's like okay
so he somehow gets one off the Seattle bench.
And sure enough in the first period there's like a line brawl and Ernie McClain grabs
the Seattle water bottle, chucks it at the ref, hits the ref like in the head or whatever.
He looks down, picks up the water bottle.
It's Seattle, throws Jack Sangster out of the game. That's so good. It's one of the great moves.
Oh, Western Hockey League.
Oh baby.
Those stories like Doug Sauter and Ernie McClain and Jack Sangster.
I mean, police probably should have been involved in a lot of these stories, but nonetheless,
I always thought that was a great one.
Get me one water bottle.
I need one Seattle water bottle.
Chuck it in the ref, Sangster, you're out.
Poor Jack's like, what'd I do?
Ernie threw it.
Ernie's still with us, by the way.
Ernie's gotta be in his 90s.
He must be.
He went, he van, he's driving a 18-wheeler.
He vanished like 10 years ago.
And everyone thought he was dead.
You know what's one about Ernie? Oh yeah. Ernie McClain.
Like, yeah. And like the Northern BC wilderness just
vanished and no one could find Ernie and just like pop back
up one day. Hey everybody.
Ernie punched McClain.
Gone for 10 years and then out of nowhere. What's all this hustle and bustle about me being gone? What's going on?
You know what remind me, I'll grab the video over the weekend remind me
to flip you the the link to the video of Ernie coming onto the ice in a three-piece suit
to confront a goaltender during a brawl in the Western Hockey League. Oh yeah! Oh yeah dude! The Western League used to be insane. Used to be
crazy. That's good times. Okay I'm out of stories for now. Put another quarter in me
and I'll get going again. But I think I'm out of stories for now. Anything else
we're leaving on the table? Are we exhausting everything? Exhausting?
Emptying the tank here before they let people start their weekend yeah I think that's it here you
want to see me looking like oh oh hang on sure public pain again Doug
rise brow battle of Alberta 10 fights Dougie snatches McSully's jersey who
using his skate slashes the jersey to ribbons throws it into the ice my
friends that is hey yeah that was a battle of Alberta all right let's see
your look bud let's hear costica look, bud. Let's see your Costco look.
Good lord, man.
What's the name of that team? Soggy Tuna?
Yeah, yeah.
Nah, I don't know.
Don't ask me, I just joined the team.
What rank is that?
That's mad at me.
You know, old Maple Leaf Gardens.
Look at you, eh, with the old OHL style
with the visor all popped up like your Uncle Leo.
Yeah, that's because of that visor. There's something going on with it.
It keeps tilting down.
So is that an Oakley?
Put it up.
Nope.
Nope.
Bauer one.
That's a Bauer visor.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it's you going old OHL style.
Protect the forehead, not the eyes.
That's good.
There you go.
That's good, Philly.
Look at you.
You got the CCM stick with the Bauer That's good. That's good, Philly. Look at you. You got the CCM stick with the
bower gloves. Yeah, well, I mean, that's a, it's a free stick, so. Best price in the
