Starting point is 00:00:00 You know what? Today, it's going to take a lot. And it almost happened when we had some tech problems. I'll just fix this. You're watching on YouTube. There we go. I make technology work today. It's going to take a lot to get me out of the great mood that I'm in today.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Zach knows why I'm in a great mood. Zach, why am I in a great mood today? And it's going to be next to impossible to get me out of this great mood. Try as you might. Try as all of our guests might. Try as my kids might. Why am I in a great mood and will remain in a great mood all day long? Because you got to speak to the great Lou Nanny today.
Starting point is 00:00:51 I did. I got a phone call from Lou Nanny today. So I got a phone call. And he wanted to talk about the video that we put out. from the sheet yesterday about the Harold Ballard story from 1989 at the draft in the Met Center. And so he calls me up and I missed the call and I checked the message, hey, it's Lou Nanny. I want to talk to you. Give me a call.
Starting point is 00:01:17 I saw your video. So my first thought is like, uh-oh, was something wrong? Because I've heard the story years ago. I've repeated it a couple of different times in a couple of different places, never hear on the sheet. So the first thing you think of is like, ooh, did I get something wrong? And so I call Lou back and hey, hey, hey, small talk, blah, blah, blah. And he goes, I saw your video. Go, was it right?
Starting point is 00:01:38 He goes, oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. He goes, there's one small thing. He goes, I didn't decide where the tables went to, you know, piss Harold off, pardon the expression. I didn't, it wasn't my choice. It was the, you got that one, thanks. The NHL decides what the tables go. That's why he was like, okay.
Starting point is 00:01:59 That was the only, the only small discrepancy. But then, you know, ended up talking to Lou for about, I don't know, 30 minutes, telling old stories from the Minnesota Nurse Stars Days. He is, by the way, the co-chair for the World Junior Hockey Championships this year. We are going, you, me and Stephen Ellis, here from Daily Face Off and the Nation Network. And we are going to Tavern 23. Yes, which is very exciting. That is going to be fantastic.
Starting point is 00:02:32 You get to watch your boy geeky. Honestly, I don't fanboy over many people, if really any, but I can't even pretend not to when it comes to Lou Nanny and just hearing Lou tell all the stories. And a lot of it comes from, my father passed away a few years ago. And when I was a kid, he used to always tell me the smartest person in the NHL who should be the,
Starting point is 00:02:53 well, they didn't have commissioners then. It was presidents, who should be the commissioner of the NHL, the president of the NHL is Lou Nanny. And honestly, if he were alive today to see that, you know, his son can pick up the phone and call and talk to Lou Nanny, it would have made him like the proudest dad in the world. More on Lou Nanny still to come on today's program, but we have more current affairs to discuss on today's show.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Let's kick it off as we do each and every day here on the sheet. The blueprint is powered by Fandual. Download the app today and play your game on Fanduel. Coming up on the program, did I mention I talk to Lou Nanny this week? morning. I'm not sure if that has come up in the show yet, but more on that later. The great Sarah Orleski, Winnipeg Jets host, we'll stop by the program at a couple of moments. Time. We'll talk about the Jets and Gary Bettman in Winnipeg as well today. Interesting. Jesse Granger from The Athletic. We'll talk about a couple and we'll talk about
Starting point is 00:03:43 net minders, specifically, well, a couple. We'll talk about one in Carolina. We'll talk about one in Boston. And we should probably talk about a new one in Montreal as well. Terak al-Bashir of monumental sports covers the Washington Capitals. He'll be aboard. We'll talk about amongst other things, the various injuries to keep players from that team. And rumors of Quinn Hughes in D.C.? Say it ain't so. Those are a number of teams piling up looking for the services of Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks. In the meantime, a pleasure to welcome to the program.
Starting point is 00:04:15 One of our favorites around here, and I think that it's safe to say one of everybody's favorites to talk to. She is the great Sarah Orleski, host for the Winnipeg Jets, who's always very generous with her time, even when she's bouncing between covering the Winnipeg Jets, Sarah and Gary Betman being in town and carving out a little bit of your afternoon slash morning for us. We really appreciate it. Thank you so much for this, Sarah. Oh, my pleasure. I'm sorry, I don't have my headphones with me, so the audio might not be as strong as what it usually is.
Starting point is 00:04:47 I sound better if you're not wearing headphones. Trust me, Sarah. Consider yourself fortunate. First of all, let me open with a frivolous question for you. So I got a phone call today from someone whom I just adore talking to and cherish every single moment. The late, great Lou Nanny, not late, the great Lou Nanny, sorry, Lou, the great Lou Nanny who, you know, ran the Minnesota North Stars for a number of years, specifically through the 80s. I just love talking to Lou. We spend about half an hour on the phone with them.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And I'm, and Sarah, now I'm set up for the day. I'm going to be in a good mood all day long, no matter what happens, no matter what the kids say to me or do when I'm. I'm done the show. It doesn't matter. I'm in a great mood. Do you have a Lou Nanny in your life where this person calls you, Sarah, and like, that's it. I'm in a good mood all day long because I talk to person X.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Do you have a Lou? You know what? I mean, I probably have a few and in various aspects of my life. So, but from a professional standpoint, I mean, you can never go wrong if you have the opportunity to get a phone call from Dennis Bayak. So, you know, I spent. years together working, I mean, we were in Toronto at the same time together, but working here in Winnipeg with the Jets broadcast.
Starting point is 00:06:05 So anytime you can get a call from Dennis Bayak and have the opportunity to talk to him, it's always a good time. So I used a Dennis Bayak line on my producer, Zach the other day, and the minute I say this, Zach's going to go like, oh, that's where you got it from. My favorite Dennis Bayak line, and I totally bid on it, the same way that Zach did a couple of days ago. So we were sitting in Popcorn Row watching a Maple Leafs game. Used to be the radio play-by-play voice
Starting point is 00:06:31 of the Maple Leafs, as you know. And I remember I asked him, I said, Dennis, where are you actually from in Manitoba? And he said, Winnipegosis. And I said, oh, I've never heard of Winnipegosis Manitoba before. And he says, Jeff, it's the birthplace
Starting point is 00:06:47 of the toothbrush. And I bite right away. I go, really? That's what the toothbrush was invented? And he says, yeah, because if it were anywhere else who would be called the teeth brush. And I went, Dennis, I'm going to be stealing that line. And I did this week on our producer, Zach. I'm with you a million percent on Dennis Bayack.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Just love you. You know, Dennis used to give me when different events that I would emcee and he'd go, oh, have I got a joke for you? You got to go with this joke, Sarah. This one kills every time. And he would tell me and go, Dennis, I don't think I can, I can use that joke. I mean, the joke might work for you, and I'm sure pretty well, but I said, I don't think that my delivery would have the same sort of impact as what it is of him. But, you know, Dennis is one of the absolute best and is beloved in this market, certainly with the years that he called the Jets broadcast here.
Starting point is 00:07:44 And he keeps a very close eye still on the team despite being retired. Yeah, and he's not shy about working blue every now and then on the rubber chicken circuit. So I can imagine the conversation. Oh, yeah. Okay, so before we get the Jets, Gary Bettman in Winnipeg, what's up? Oh, you know, it was just he obviously finished with the Board of Governors meetings yesterday in Colorado Springs. And then he had an event, he's an event this evening with the USA Hockey Hall of Fame, I believe, in St. Paul, Minnesota. And so he said that he was just pretty much, he was looking, didn't want to go back to New York for the one night.
Starting point is 00:08:23 And so he looked at the schedule and the Jets were playing last night against the Dallas Star. So he came in and then watched the game last night and then took part in a breakfast and lunch here today with a variety of different people within the city and sponsors, season ticket members, that sort of thing. But there was no specific reason. That was actually what I had asked when he was coming in. I said, am I missing something? Is there something that I should be aware of that's happening or cause for concern? And no, it was just that it worked out well with the schedule. And as we know, he makes his appearances throughout all 32 buildings at various points throughout the season.
Starting point is 00:08:58 So he was talking to the people that have the nerve to keep the lights on around the shop. Oh, how dare he? Okay, Winnipeg Jets, still without, you know, it's life without Hallibuck. And we see some lines have been, been some split up as well. Give us a snapshot from your Van Gogh. point. Like, give us to Winnipeg Jets where they're at right now today with lines split up now. Well, I mean, just overall, they're obviously out of the playoff picture. So it's been a disappointing start to this season when you come off of a year in which you win the president's
Starting point is 00:09:38 trophy and you have the success, the historic start that they had last year. Expectations continue to get raised. And so it hasn't gone the way that they would have anticipated I want to say 14, 14 and 1, right now with the loss last night against Dallas. And the identity of the Winnipeg Jets that we have come to know over the last several years has not been present with any sort of consistency this season. And then remarkably, they have not been able to score, which you look at the top line up to this point, which is Kyle Connor, Mark Sheifley and Gabe Valerty, have been doing the vast majority. In fact, over 50% of the Jets goals have been scored by that trio. And so Scott Arniel has
Starting point is 00:10:22 been looking for some more production. Obviously, you can't just survive off of that top line. And so he's split up and adjusted all four lines or he did for the game last night against Dallas. And they've had to contend, like many teams with a number of injuries so far this season, our key players. And that includes obviously Connor Hallibuck, who has been sidelines since November it was November 21st that it was announced that he was going to be out and the team has struggled to be able to get the wins since and it's not all. I mean, you look
Starting point is 00:10:53 Eric Comrie or Thomas Millich was called up from Manitoba Moose and he got his first NHL start. It's not all on the goaltenders. Obviously they need run support to go with it but at the end of the day, neither of those
Starting point is 00:11:09 goaltenders are a heart trophy winner or three-time Bezina winner and so it's been a big blow for the Jets to not be able to have Halibuck in that. You know, the offense is an interesting one too and like, listen, anytime you have a goaltender like Connor Hallibuck
Starting point is 00:11:25 and I remember like whenever I'd bring things up around goaltenders and oh, look how important this guy is to the team and all they're being carried by the goaltender. Kelly Rudy would always say to me, you know, you're allowed to have a good goalie, Jeff. Like you shouldn't have to apologize for having a good goaltender with the Winnipeg Jets. They have
Starting point is 00:11:40 the top dog in the NHL. But there is a cascading effect that happens when Conor Halibuck is not available for service. But I didn't know that it would cascade to the point where it would really affect the goal scoring. Like I can understand like, okay, you know what? Connor Hallibuck can cover up some blemishes when it comes to the blue line. But is it just, was Nick Eelers that important to this offense? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:10 And look, I don't think it's fair to say that it's just because Hallibuck is out that goal scoring has dried up because goal scoring was an issue for them beforehand in terms of getting it throughout the lineup they just haven't they haven't had it with the consistency that you would expect and yeah you know what I think that maybe we underestimated me of us the impact that Eilers can have the speed element obviously that he brings with it and the impact that that has on his line mates in addition to anybody else and you look I mean there's special teams right now haven't been performing well. They have struggled to score five on five.
Starting point is 00:12:48 They struggled to score on the power play since, I want to say it since, no, it's either the beginning of November or the middle of November really when Halibuck went out or from there, but they have, their power plays operating under 6%. I mean, they just, they're 32nd in the league in that timeframe.
Starting point is 00:13:08 And so it's just, everything has gone dry. But yeah, not having Eilers on the power play, not having that speed option, what, again, what he was able to do for his linemates and help create. The second line in whatever incarnation it's been since he's left has struggled to get the sort of production that you would have expected and that the Winnipeg Jets at the end of the day need in order to be able to have success. So I look at this team and a couple of things you look at as far as like,
Starting point is 00:13:37 what do they need in the grocery cart? One, they need the goalie to be healthy. That's the obvious one. and they're not the only team looking for a second-line center. It seems like half the league is looking for a second-line center. We can probably throw the Winnipeg Jets in that mix, too. And then one more puck moving defenseman. One more that can shuttle the puck,
Starting point is 00:13:55 skate the puck, pass the puck, move the puck out of their own zone with the efficiency of someone like a Josh Morrissey. A, is that accurate? You're there. You're closer to it than I am. Is that an accurate read? And B, am I missing anything? no i think that so yes goaltender aside you look at a second line center they have i think you could
Starting point is 00:14:17 argue that the winnipeg juts have searched for that second line center for years in fact i mean i used to always say that at trade deadline my every trade deadline i would say they are looking for a second line center and that's ever since brine little was here and towards the end of his career when he moved farther down. They just have not been able to find anybody, although Kevin Shevoldeuf has brought in a variety of different players via trade. They just haven't been able to have the success with any sort of frequency or a longevity that you would have hoped for it. And look, there's Jonathan Taves came in. It was on the second line and the second line center role. And last night was playing on the wing, the fourth line. And I think to be, to,
Starting point is 00:15:07 I think it's understandable that obviously it would take him longer to be able to get up to speed given everything that he has done, the two years that he has missed, but they need more from him as well. So, yeah, I think that they're definitely looking for that. And I just think there have been so many injuries last year.
Starting point is 00:15:26 They were, by and large, they were a healthy team and you look at the number of players that just have not even reached the level that they were playing last year. And whether that's because of injury, Cole Perfetti has not played the way that they would have hoped that he would and he was injured to start the season. Adam Lauer was Dylan Samburg who made huge strides last year on that second pairing with Neil Pionk and that was the reason why they didn't keep Brendan Dillon was because
Starting point is 00:15:53 you needed to elevate Sandberg and he was ready to go well he's been injured for a bunch of this season and so I just think it's taken everybody longer to be able to get back to the level that we had become used to seeing them at. But if there is a positive, I will say that last night's game against Dallas, although they didn't get the result that they were looking for and they walked out without any points in it, they fought back in it.
Starting point is 00:16:19 That was a game in which they went down. And with the way that they had been playing recently, typically, I mean, you get down three goals. You look and go, okay, well, they're not coming back. And it's Dallas. And it's doubt. It's 100%. But the result that they showed, and then Mark Schifley,
Starting point is 00:16:38 again, as come to be expected, he scores a couple of goals, gets them into it. Logan Stanley does as well. And it reminded me of last year. And one of the things that was very characteristic at the team last year was that even if they were down in the third period, long before the Manitoba miracle and the postseason or anything like that, you never believed they were out.
Starting point is 00:17:01 of it. They always had that ability. That if they had that puck late in the third period, you go, don't go anywhere because you're right. And that hasn't been this year. But last night, we saw it. And so it was one of those ones where look and go, okay, maybe this does turn to be, it's just one game, but maybe this does turn out to be a turning point of everybody's starting to get their legs back, getting that chemistry again.
Starting point is 00:17:28 And the Jets can only obviously hope so. because while they are on the outside of the playoff picture, they are still very close to that wild card one. So they've been able to keep themselves in the mix, despite the challenges that they've had. You are so, I can't, you're so right about that. I'd kind of forgotten how every time I would watch a Winnipeg Jets game last year
Starting point is 00:17:49 and they'd be trailing in the third period, there was always a sense of, they're coming back. Like, they're coming back. They're going, because we saw it so many times. Like by the second time, the second half of the season. You're so right. Totally forgotten about this.
Starting point is 00:18:04 I'd watch games. We all would and go like, oh, don't worry. They got this. They're down two pucks. Halfway through the third. No,
Starting point is 00:18:08 no, no, no. They're going to win the game. And they would. And that's, I totally forgotten about that. It's only a year ago. I had looked at, I wondered,
Starting point is 00:18:17 you know, after their loss in Buffalo, they had the players only meeting. And so, you know, typically I always find that after something like that happens, we look at that as going, okay, will we look back on this moment
Starting point is 00:18:30 as being the, turning point of the season for the winning Jets and then they come out they play well against Montreal but then they come home you know they they get the win against Buffalo again they lose very handedly to Edmonton on the second game of that back to back and so you go okay well maybe that wasn't the turning point for the season and so now you look and you know if you're if you are a Jets fan you're hoping obviously that last night is an indication of things to come so that maybe we look back and go, okay, they didn't get the two points, but last night's game, again, was the first time that we saw them look like what you would expect the Winnipeg Jets to look like.
Starting point is 00:19:11 And you're not going to win every game, but I think that it was, that's one that you could look at is going, okay, if you follow that structure, if that's the way that you play, then more often the non-good things will happen, and especially to be able to play like that against a team like Dallas. You aren't playing against the 31st or the 32nd ranked team and doing that. You're doing it against the second strongest team right now. And so I think that it was great. They're at the start of a four-game homestand. And I think to be able to start against a team like Dallas, I know Scott Arnielan said he hoped that that was going to be, that that was a, that was going to be a strong start to the schedule for them, that you aren't coming home because the rest of their
Starting point is 00:19:54 opponents on this home standard Eastern Conference teams. You're not starting against an Ottawa or another opponent. You're starting against a rival, a divisional opponent, and one of the top teams in the league. You know what? You're so right. Thanks for reminding us all about that, too. It wasn't that long ago that this was like the automatic.
Starting point is 00:20:13 They're down on the third and they're still going to win. And I'm glad that you mentioned Brian Little, too. Man, as far as like second line centers go around, I was just talking to his agent the other day, too, about Brian Little, Anton Thun. And he's like, he's doing great. He's healthy. He's like doing triathlons. He's like, he's like, all leaned out.
Starting point is 00:20:29 And like, he doesn't have like the grind of an 82 game season anymore. No injuries. Like he's in, Brian Little's in an awesome spot. He doesn't have the grind of an eight two game season. But he's got the grind of triathlons. The man's, I know. I'll tell you, when I retire, triathlons, probably not in my beautiful. No, you know, it's been great.
Starting point is 00:20:53 when we have had the opportunity to see him back in Winnipeg or to be able to talk to him, to be able to see him do well. Because obviously with the way that his career unfortunately had to end, you never like to see it and not to be able to go out on your own terms. So for him to be able to find another passion and another outlet is fantastic. Yep, happy for him. Listen, thanks for parking time for me again. You're always so accommodating and generous.
Starting point is 00:21:16 I appreciate every moment with you, Sarah Orleski. You be well. And thanks for bringing up memories of Dennis Bayak, too. He is one of those, like, your day is set up when you talk to DB. It absolutely is. And as you mentioned, I mean, there are, you know, as you reference, too, there are many stories with Dennis. He has a great storyteller.
Starting point is 00:21:34 There are many stories that only Dennis can get away with that way. Oh, yes. Did you know the toothbrush was invented in Winnipegosis? All right. You know what he spoke quickly, what he also used to say to me is that he'd give me the stories or he would say that, you know, Jim Ralph uses this story. And he goes, this one always played. Well, and I said, again, this is not, I don't think, I don't think I can get away with this.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Oh, Dennis Hall kills with this line. You got to use it, Orlesque. You got to use it. Exactly. I know. I've heard them all. You're the best. Thanks so much for stopping by. Be well. Don't get to see you before. And happy holidays. Yes, to you as well. And you and your entire family. Thanks so much for this, Sarah. Thanks so much, Jeff. There she is. The great Sarah Olesque dropping by feeling us in on the Winnipeg Jets. And I'm glad she mentioned Brian Little, too. You know, when you look at the Winnipeg Jets, a couple of things. You make the argument they haven't been the same since Dustin Bufflin left the way that he did.
Starting point is 00:22:35 And they haven't been the same since Brian Little and had his career end in injury the way that he did. Anyhow, we have to move on. Someone very important has been waiting very patiently. He is Jesse Granger from the Athletic here to talk to us about a couple of different things. One, goaltenders and two, the Vegas Golden Knights. And with that, Jesse, first of all, I'm going to ask this of everybody today. So I spent about half an hour of my life this morning talking to Lou Nanny, who was a long time manager, the Minnesota Nourstores, one of the great storytellers of the game. And it just set me up to feel good all day long.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Like, it's going to be impossible for me now to be in a bad mood because I got to talk to Lou Nanny today. Do you have a Lou Nanny in your life? So that might be professional, might be personal, someone who when you get a phone call from them, and you talk to them for a while you're just like set up to be happy for that day. Jesse Granger, do you have a loonanny? Oh, that's a good question.
Starting point is 00:23:32 My wife is the easy answer. That's the very smart. Oh, bravo. Oh, let premier at 12th come and Dionne Francie, the first star, Jesse Granger. Well done. Yeah, you know what I'm doing with that one. But my dad, my dad and I have a great relationship.
Starting point is 00:23:48 We talk golf is usually the subject. Oh, yeah. That's kind of. The thing that us two bond on, he's played golf most of his life. He finally got me into it late in life for me when I was 30. So I've been playing it. I'm super into it now. That's kind of our thing.
Starting point is 00:24:03 So usually when my dad gets on the phone, we talk about golf and I feel good after that. Is he a hockey fan? Is he a hockey fan? Like, does he ever go? Like, how did my son end up here? Yeah. I mean, he follows the Golden Knights very closely now here in Vegas. He lives here in Vegas with me.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Growing up, I was the big hockey fan. He was more football. I grew up in Colorado, so both huge Broncos fans. I was an avalanche fan as a kid. My dad wasn't as into the hockey as I was. Now he's more into it now that I kind of do this for a living. Okay, so the marriage of goaltending and Vegas Golden Knights, the intersection there right now is Carter Hart.
Starting point is 00:24:39 I know it isn't a long runway. There hasn't been a lot that we've had to see. But early returns on Carter Hart, the Netminder. Yeah, he's been a lot better. than I expected a goalie to look after nearly two years without playing hockey. He hasn't been amazing, but he has had brilliant moments in these games. He's played three. He just lost his first, suffered his first defeat last night in overtime. He does, one of the things Carter Hart's always been able to do, dating back to when he first came into the NHL is he makes the 10
Starting point is 00:25:14 Bell saves. Like Carter Hart's highlight reel of amazing saves stacks up with most guys around the league. It's the other stuff. It's the how consistent can you be? Can you be in the right spot? Don't give up a softie. And I expected more of those types to happen early on, especially after not playing as long as he did. In his first game back, he did have a mishandle of the puck where he basically gave away a goal. But outside of that, he's been pretty consistent in there. He's not losing his net. He's not sliding around outside the posts. He has looked under control. and then he's made some really big saves for the Golden Knights in big moments. This is a team that has been looking for those types of saves.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Ever since Aiden Hill got hurt early in the year, they've been rolling with Akira Schmidt and rookie Carl Lindbaum. And while neither, they didn't hurt the Golden Knights, they didn't make the big saves that you need. I mean, the Golden Knights have so many overtime and shootout losses this season. And while it's good to pick up those extra loser points along the way to keep you in the standings where they are, it does feel like they've left some points.
Starting point is 00:26:16 points on the table. And it's usually because in overtime, you're going to have, you're going to trade high danger chances. And it seems like so far this year, the other team had come up with those saves. The other goalie on the other side had come up with those saves. And Vegas's hadn't. Carter Hart has been making those saves in those big moments. And it certainly feels like it's helped turn the tide for the golden nights here. You know, one question and it comes across like, I'm a simpleton, which I am, so I have no problem asking it. I look at Vegas. and this is a team that I said at the beginning of the season, I can see them in the Stanley Cup.
Starting point is 00:26:49 I can see them in the Stanley Cup. I can see them in the Stanley Cup. Finally, I can see them winning the Stanley Cup. Here's a question I have of the Vegas Golden Knights. Of course, health is the mitigating factor for every team. Are they good? Like, is this a good team? They are.
Starting point is 00:27:06 They're a good team. I don't know if they're a great team. I haven't seen anything this year that tells me they can be on the level that obviously Colorado's, I mean, they're kind of in their own universe, right? now. But even Dallas, Tampa Bay, I haven't seen the Golden Knights hit that gear yet. And I think that there is room for them to hit that gear. Mitch Marner, it's been a slow start. I mean, the numbers are there. He's got a ton of assists. His on ice, like in terms of he's not out there for a bunch
Starting point is 00:27:33 of goals against. And the Golden Knights score goals when he's out there. But he hasn't taken over games. Like when you have a player of that caliber, a hundred point player that makes 12 million a year, you expect some shifts where he just jumps over the boards and just goes and gets you a goal. And you haven't seen that yet. I think it's taking him a little bit of time. And this, I mean, covering the Golden Knights, I see star players getting integrated basically every year, because that's what this team does.
Starting point is 00:27:56 And it typically takes some time until you see them at their peak of their powers. Like I remember when Petrangelo first came in thinking, well, this doesn't look like the guy that they thought they were getting. And then a couple months later, you're like, there he is. It's Alex Petrangelo. So I'm not, I haven't been too hard on Mitch Marner to this point because I think he's still integrating himself. and he's done well for normal player standards,
Starting point is 00:28:18 maybe not up to his standards, but I think that can take this team to another level because right now Jack Eichol's driving offense. When Jack Eichol's not on the ice, this team doesn't feel dangerous offensively so far this year. Let me pick up on one point about Mitch Marner and then we'll move on. Again, a really simple statement, just observational, not based on anything other than I watch a lot of hockey games
Starting point is 00:28:43 and this is what I see. Western Conference is harder. He's come from the Eastern Conference and he's gone, like there was a time, like 15 years ago, there was a thing in the NHL where, and because of it, I'm convinced managers just stop doing this. Whenever there was an in-season trade and a defenseman went from the Eastern Conference
Starting point is 00:29:03 to the Western Conference, they struggled. Because in the Eastern Conference, he had like that extra half second to make a decision in the Western Conference at that time, That vanished. And then the balance of power shifted back to the Eastern Conference that it became different. But it looks right now like, A, and it's not just Colorado and Dallas, although those are the obvious ones.
Starting point is 00:29:25 The better hockey, tougher hockey, the tighter hockey is being played in the Western Conference. And Mitch Marner has played his entire career in the Eastern Conference, specifically in the Atlantic. He's been able to freewheel, and he can't do that in the Western Conference. Now, he's smart enough to figure it out. but there's going to be an adjustment period. At the end of it, you watch all the games too, Jesse. The West is better this year. Agreed?
Starting point is 00:29:52 I agree. The Central's the best division in hockey. I mean, aside from Colorado and, I mean, Minnesota, I think, should belongs right up there with the contenders. I know you just talked about Winnipeg. I think that when Hellebuck gets back, they're still one of the better teams. But to me, the big difference is the Pacific is back a little bit. I think the Pacific has been down for, I mean, basically since the Golden Knights entered
Starting point is 00:30:12 the league nine years ago. The sharks kind of fell off right after they came in. The ducks had been on that run and they all, they all kind of retired. Kessler and those guys retired. And now we're seeing the ducks are back. We're seeing the sharks play much more competitive hockey. They're not winning every night, but they're a tough out and they're going to score some goals on you. Calgary and Vancouver are really the only two that aren't in Seattle's been a lot better this year. So I think the biggest difference in the West and specifically for the Golden Knights is these teams that they've been able to just kind of beat up on, mainly the sharks and ducks, aren't those teams anymore.
Starting point is 00:30:47 You've got to fight on your hands every time they come to town where that hasn't been the case for a while. So yeah, I agree with you that the West is stronger. And I think the biggest difference is those young teams taking that step, not just Anaheim and San Jose, but Chicago, who Vegas has seen already this year, it's the upstart teams in the West have made this season very exciting. I don't remember a year where things felt like they were changing in the league more than this season.
Starting point is 00:31:10 It's been a while since we've seen this kind of a changing of the guard. Let me ask you about a couple of goaltenders here quick. We'll park the Vegas conversation. Jacob Fowler, the Montreal Canadians. So whenever you go from college to any pro level, what's the NHL or the American League? Well, goaltenders always go to the American League. You don't go right from college to the NHL.
Starting point is 00:31:33 The adjustment is tough. And I can recall, you know, last year talking to goalie coaches and just asking like that watch the American in hockey league and watch the goaltenders. What do you see in Fowler? And a couple of them pointed out, and it's understandable, that for pro standards, he looked slow in the crease. He didn't look quick.
Starting point is 00:31:55 He didn't look crisp. It's understandable. It's a tough, hard transition. Does this one feel quick to you? Does this one feel as quick as it feels to me? I mean, is the situation that bad in Montreal that it's got to be like already a ham? Elmary pass and going to A.H.L. LaValle to bring in Fowler?
Starting point is 00:32:18 Especially considering Montembo's history. It's not like this isn't a goalie who hasn't been very successful for multiple years. And yes, it's been bad this year. And obviously, Dobish had that hot start that kind of allowed you to not worry so much. When the other goalie's going well, it's easier to ignore. All of a sudden, Dobish falls off. The puck starts fine in the net. And his game, when I watch Dobish, it doesn't look any different than it did when he was stopping everything early in the year. It just feels like the bounces aren't going their way lately. And Montembo doesn't have the best rebound control. And I think that that has led to a lot of the chaos in front of him. But it does
Starting point is 00:32:58 feel early. I agree. I think that I would prefer to let these two goalies try to find their way. I mean, it's tempting when you've got a goalie with the pedigree of Fowler. But yeah, it's, I agree with you that it does feel a little rushed. It feels a little early. Jeremy Swayman, back like a vertebrae in the conversation for the Vesna, true or false. First of all, I'm thrilled for him. I'm really, really happy for Jeremy Swayman. You've talked plenty about him, written about him. In the conversation for the Vesna, true or false? True. It's going to be tough for him to maintain it unless the Bruins get better defensively. I was, the way I view the Vesna is I think there are some goalies that are playing incredibly well behind bad defenses and they're going to have a hard time maintaining those numbers over an 82 game schedule and I think Jeremy Swainman fits into that.
Starting point is 00:33:53 And then I've got like the goalies who are playing incredibly well behind good teams. Logan Thompson and Andre Vasselowski to me are the two that that feels more like it's going to last the season just because they aren't having to do everything. Jeremy Swamen has been phenomenal. I think he's probably been the best goal in the lead this year. And Boston hasn't been, usually when we think of the Bruins, they've been so buttoned up defensively for so long that it's almost hard to, like, picture them as a bad defensive team. But they have been bad.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I think last time I checked, they were given up the most high danger chances per game in the NHL. And Swayman is just so under control. And like you said, I'm all so happy for him. I spoke with him when they were here in Vegas. And he talked about how good this offseason was for him. He obviously had a really bad year last year, in terms of not meeting the expectations of the franchise chooses you over the Vesina winner in Lina's Allmark,
Starting point is 00:34:42 and they trade him away. They give you the contract, and it just didn't go well. It didn't go well for him. It didn't go well for the team. And a guy like that that is used to everything, like his whole career, he had won pretty much everywhere. That's a hit to the ego. He goes into the offseason. He told me he didn't take much time off the ice.
Starting point is 00:34:59 He worked on a lot of things. He obviously goes over for the world championships, go 7 and 0 in that tournament, gets a shutout in the gold medal game. wins for the US. He said shedding those gloves when he won that did him a lot of good in terms of just feeling good about his game and he just wanted to roll that into the season. And he's done exactly that. When he's on his game, it feels like so hard to get a puck past him because he's just so connected. He's not sprawling all over the place. His gloves and his hands, his skates, they all stay together. Everything moves together. There's no holes in his structure when he goes side to side and it just feels like it's a backdoor one-timer, even if he's going to make
Starting point is 00:35:38 the save, there should be holes there for me to shoot at as the shooter. And with Swayman, there just aren't. He slides across with everything in front of the puck and he's got great rebound control, hard to say enough good things about what he's done. It's going to be interesting to see if he can maintain it if Boston doesn't improve defensively. But so far this year, I'd argue he's been the best goal in the league. It's all the ballet training at Maine that he went through when he was a college, goaltenders, like study ballet, like your balance, your flexibility, all of it. Like just swallow your ego and study ballet. Come on. If you want to be a good goalie, follow Jeremy Swayman. Uh, Jesse, you're the best. Thanks as always for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:36:12 And thanks, listen, I know I sort of ask a goofy question off the top about your, you know, who's your loo nanny? But that's a great one about your dad. I'm happy you to have bonded over golf. It's a beautiful thing for father and son. Thanks for sharing that. Really appreciate it, Jesse. Thanks so much. Thanks for having me. There he is. Jesse Granger from the athletic covering the biggest bowl of the Knights and is all over the goalie beat as well. So as we hustle around, so we've gone from the Jets to the Golden Knights to NHL goal-tending. We turn our attention now to one of the more interesting teams around the NHL who find themselves on top again.
Starting point is 00:36:47 And Alexander Ovechkin finds himself trending towards another 40-goal season. And all types of rumors, which we talked about on the program yesterday, Rachel Dory kicked it off on social media about Quinn Hughes and perhaps interest from the Washington Capitals, amongst other teams. Here to break down what's happening with the Caps right now is a good friend from Monumental Sports, the one and only Terek L. Bashir, who joins me now on the sheet.
Starting point is 00:37:16 Never a dull moment, Terik, and thanks for joining us. From the rink, always appreciate the ambient sound. That always... By the way, my favorite sound at a rink is puck-hitting crossbar. What's your favorite sound? Favorite sound? And you know what, I like when the first guys get on the ice and they're warming up and just the blade cutting into the ice.
Starting point is 00:37:40 Yeah. Always love that sound, especially when there's no one else in the building. And it's just, you get that really echo of the, I love that. And everyone's scrape is a little bit different, too. Oh, you know what? That sounds always gets me going. That's a really good point, too. You know what?
Starting point is 00:37:56 I'll tell you what. So Dale Howardchuk, the late great, one of the best centers, the NHLs ever had. So what he would do, and I believe he did this with Mark Schifley, Tanner Pearson as well. What he used to do is when the kids were in junior, he would blindfold them and have them shoot at the net. And his idea was, and it makes sense. He said, like, look, when you get to the NHL, you don't have time to set up and dust the puck. Like, you got to get it and go. And you need to be able to shoot instinctively.
Starting point is 00:38:28 And what he did is he trained himself by essentially shooting with his eyes closed. So he would blindfold the guys. And here's what I was told about Dale Howardchuck. I asked his son about it too. And he's like, that was a freak. And this is true. He could tell the difference. He would shoot at the net.
Starting point is 00:38:42 And he could tell the difference in the sound of a goalpost versus a crossbar. That's how like finally tuned Dale Howardchuck was to the sounds of what's happening around. Do you have a thought on that one? That's amazing. I'm not sure. I could probably tell the difference between, like, the back bars, which have more of a thud and the crossbar and the both. I think anyone can tell that difference. But I'll tell you one thing about covering OV for the last 21 years.
Starting point is 00:39:15 If you were to blindfold me and put me in a rink and say, who just skated by, I could tell you if it was Alex or if it wasn't Alex amongst the capitals. Because the power with which he strides, and he also stomps. It's a very, if you're standing at the glass, you know, when I'm doing my sideline job sometimes, the way he stomps and when he goes by, it's just, it's like a herd of elephants going by. Like, it just, it just speaks to just how powerful he is and how heavy he is and how hard he, you know, when you see him in front of the net and you're watching a much larger D man trying to move him and he's not going anywhere. Yeah, it's because at 250 pounds of beef there, it's heavy and he plays heavy. heavy on his dick, heavy on his legs. He's just hard to move. And listen, in this, you know, he's already got the,
Starting point is 00:40:05 we don't even call it the Gretzky record anymore. He's got the OV record. Like, that's his. I don't know, that one's ever getting broken to me. The most intriguing or important part about that is that he stayed healthy enough in order. And it's not as if he plays a soft game. That to me is the point where I look at and I say, that's why that record won't get broken is because you have to have X amount of 50 goals
Starting point is 00:40:26 seasons in a row. You need to have that kind of health and no one's had it like Alexander. Ovechkin, but did you think, I mean, part of me's going like, okay, so it's the last year of his contract, he set the big record, he's got a Stanley Cup. Not that he's going to be like a lick the envelope year, but this might be like the foot off the gas season for Ovechkin. He's trending to 41 goals. Like, there's no foot off the gas here for Ovechkin. You know, that's an interesting way of putting it. So look, this is a weird year for him, Jeff. He started out training camp hurt, right? He had maybe a lingering injury that happened during his summer
Starting point is 00:41:04 training. And then he comes to the camp and he missed about a week, a week and a half. So he kind of started behind the eight ball. And that led to a slower by his own standards start to the year. But what we have seen here over the last dozen games or so, the team, the capitals are 10, one in one in their last 12 games. And look, you'll never guess who leads them in goals and points during that stretch. 40-year-old Alex O'atchit, he's eating up. Yeah, sure, three were empty-netters. I know what people say about the empty-nettors.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Wayne Gretzky also had a lot of empty netters. Those are important goals at end-games. And Obie is one of the best who's ever done it, and he scores them almost at will when he has that opportunity. But the fact that he is finding ways to score, at this age, amazing. Can we just pause for one second on empty netters? Like there have been, and I'm pretty sure if my memory serves correctly here, you know, Brett Hull would brag about like, oh, there's, I didn't get these on empty netters. Like, these are all goals.
Starting point is 00:42:09 And, you know, part of me always says like, dude, if your team is protecting the lead, you're not going out there. Like, that's not the flex that you think it is. Like, to me, it's not just like you scored into an empty net. It's that we're protecting a one goal lead and the coach says, I want you on the ice. To me, it's not so much about the goal. It's about that player has earned the trust of a coach. So they're going to be out there in position to score the empty net goal. Kind of like it's not always the fight, but it's the threat of the fight that makes it important.
Starting point is 00:42:42 It's not the empty net goal. It's the fact that you're out there in position to get an empty net goal, which is the compliment there, which is when I hear players say, oh, I got all my goal, none of them are empty netters. I always say, that ain't the flex. to think it is, bud, because you ain't getting out there to protect the lead. That ain't a compliment to you. And you know, as long as
Starting point is 00:43:04 we're talking about empty netters, you know, you and I have covered this league for a long time for me, about 20 plus years. The change in philosophy on empty netters as well is something that I mean, a long time ago, if you were to ice the puck from 170 feet and not concludes the scoring
Starting point is 00:43:20 and now the puck's moving back in your own in, the coaches give me the what for? Why? Oh, yeah. Now coaches go you know what, shoot it from down there because it's going to stop play. It's going to let everyone catch their breath. I can decide whether I have the matchup that I want. Everyone can kind of, you know, re-centered themselves and get focused for that next draw. Go ahead and fire from 175 feet.
Starting point is 00:43:41 I don't care. And OV is one of the best to do it. John Carlson is really good at it. And former Capitol Lars Eller was another guy who had a radar. He could score 50 netters from the other end of the ring. It was always amazing to me. I can do the empty night conversation all day long. But we got other things to get to.
Starting point is 00:43:58 You mentioned John Carlson. So injury update. Carlson, Leonard Lingren. What's the latest? Yeah, so John Carlson was out there today, looked pretty good. He's been out there for practice for the last few days. Upper body injury, something tells me he is going to be ready to go for the Carolina game tomorrow here in D.C. He's been trending in that direction.
Starting point is 00:44:22 I didn't get a chance to talk to him. I was taping something else, but I do have a feeling that he's going to play tomorrow. Charlie Lindgren, also trending in the right direction. He's on IR. He's probably still going to miss a few games here, but that's okay because Logan Thompson is, you know, you might have heard of him. He's having a pretty good year again. Now, you do want to be careful of overworking Logan, but that's probably not an issue at this point,
Starting point is 00:44:47 particularly since he also might be going to the Olympics. You've got to be wary of workload with him, but that's the car. their dealt right now. The bad news is on Leonard. I mean, Ryan had such a great couple of weeks leading up to the injury. We all saw the Truba hit that resulted in a shoulder injury for him. He's out for a protracted amount of time. I think they're still trying to figure out how much time, but, you know, we're talking several weeks before we're going to see him again, which is just really, like I said, a shame because the rookie was really starting to find his game. I was digging in in his analytics right before he got hurt. He was leading the team in offensive zone possession time.
Starting point is 00:45:28 He was starting to hang on the puck. He was on the first unit power play. He was really starting to get his C legs and then bam. He's out for, you know, several weeks. He'll be fine. He'll bounce back from this, but it certainly is putting a little crimp in his momentum. What do you make of? And it's all started started yesterday afternoon. And by no means of the Washington Capitals, the only team, A, interested, obviously, and we're all sort of marrying Quinn Hughes here to the New Jersey Devils, but, you know, Detroit and Philadelphia and Carolina and the New York Rangers, et cetera, et cetera. Did it surprise you to see Washington in that, as part of that conversation, you know, Rachel Krechek, Rachel Dory put it out
Starting point is 00:46:11 there early, Elliot Friedman hooked up on a little bit later on on the NHL network. I kind of look at these stories in a lot of ways as I'll just. general managers talk and they talk about all the players on the lineup every single day and this is a sort of extension of that but did it surprise you how did it go over in in caps land when the name Quinn Hughes popped up well I've been getting a lot of text messages over the last few hours from people in the game and just people who are fans of the game you know there are only a handful of players out there when when that name gets mentioned with your team everyone goes uh-oh is this something that could happen
Starting point is 00:46:49 Look, I covered this team for 20 plus years, Jeff, as you know, and the Capitals have a really thorough front office. If a player like Quinn Hughes, if his name is out there in trade rumors, they are going to make their calls and they are going to do their due diligence. I feel like this Capitals team, though championship window, has been flung wide open once again after what they did last year. You know, they rebuilt on the fly last off the season before. last off season. Then had a great year last year. Ovi is the last year of his contract. He
Starting point is 00:47:24 desperately wants to have one more deep run. And look, we don't know what's going to happen to Ovi. He might resign. I don't know. I don't think he's made up his mind yet. But when you have a team that is playing the way they are, when you have goal tending that's playing the way it is, as a general manager, I mean, obviously not speaking for Chris Patrick, but you have to at least explore the opportunity to bring in another generational talent to maybe help get you over. you know, to push you over that line. The capitals have rebuilt their prospect pipeline to the point where they've got a lot of really good players of that. They've got a lot of assets.
Starting point is 00:48:00 If they want to get into the sweepstakes, they absolutely can. It's funny, like, right before we came on, I was doing something else and I only had a minute to go look at lines again. I was like, I don't even know. I mean, obviously, Quinn used to be number one D-man, but it's got Jacob Chickering. You got John Carlson. That's Marty Farivari. The left side looks good. The left side looks good.
Starting point is 00:48:20 I know. I did the same thing. I'm like, okay, so who's out? I know. And then, not to mention, you got Cole Hudson over at BU who's about to come in. And from everything that I've seen and heard, he's as good as Lane. I mean, it's an embarrassment of riches on the back end. I don't have the stats right in front of me, Jeff, but I'm pretty sure the capitals lead the league in goals and points from the back end, which they did last year, but they're doing it again this year.
Starting point is 00:48:47 So 515, they've been outstanding. The PK's coming around. Defensively, this team is really, really good, which is a long-winded way of saying, yes. I mean, if the opportunity is there, you have to, you have to try to figure it out. Yeah, speaking of Cole Hudson, do you know the skate lace story with the Hudson family? No, no. Okay, so you have a son that plays.
Starting point is 00:49:14 So next time your son's out there, get them to do what? what Lane and Cole's father used to do and did the and is exactly Zach, Zach Hudson who's in in Bakersfield. So he would have the he would have this like the the Hudson's are elite on their on their edges. Obviously that's the one thing.
Starting point is 00:49:35 And Paul's a really strong. You've seen him like he's a strong skater. And he's like physically stronger than Lane is. So dad would have them as a way to strengthen the ankles and work on their edges. he'd have them practice without laces or untie their skates to skate. I can't imagine that for one second, even just thinking about it. So when my kid was younger, he's now at Army West Point playing hockey.
Starting point is 00:50:04 When he was younger, I do remember another dad saying, you know what, let the kids tie their own skates because they're not going to get them as tight as, you know, an adult. can. And that's going to, in the long run, strengthen their ankles and teach them to work their edges a little bit differently. And I want to say from like, I might have been the designated skate tire for the entire team when they were like double A, like stepped girls. By the time that we were eight or nine, we weren't allowed to go in the room who were parents. So the kids were tying
Starting point is 00:50:37 their own skates. And I do remember my son's skates were significantly looser than they had been before. And it didn't effect of skating. If anything, I really do think it strengthened his ankles. Yes. And by the way, it's not Zach. It's Quinn. Sorry, it's Quinn Hudson, who's in the Oilers organization. I just, I've got two boys that play and I keep saying like, Brody, TJ, like, don't do up your skates. Go, go, the next time you go to Schenney, don't do up your skates. Because they marvel at the Hudson. And one more thing, I remember being told when my son was maybe like six or seven, and I was carrying his bag in for it to a, to a more.
Starting point is 00:51:14 morning, a morning skill session. And, you know, a dad who had been in the game a long time said, don't do that. Don't do that. Like, he's too young to lift weights, but, you know, let him carry his own bag in. That makes him stronger. Okay. Makes him more independent, but it makes him stronger. Yeah, no, 100%.
Starting point is 00:51:30 And here's the other one. And this is just like a pet peeve. And I give goalies a pass on this. We're talking about, like, youth hockey here, folks. I'm with you about carrying the bag. But when I see a kid that has a bag with wheels, has the rollers on it I always say that here's what I
Starting point is 00:51:48 Here's the saying And feel free to use this one Terrick Next time you're around the ranks And for anybody watching or listening right now Here's the saying If your bag has wheels You don't Go ahead, man
Starting point is 00:52:07 Use it Next time you're in the lobby of a rinkgo If your bag has wheels, you don't That is fantastic. Yeah, we never had a bag with wheels. I was never going to allow that. Yes, good. Good job. That's a really good set. It's a really good thing. Bag has wheels, you don't. All right. Listen, you have a lot of important things to do. I'll let you get back to it. Derek, thanks as always for stopping by and parking some of your time for me today. Great stories about your son and caps and all of it.
Starting point is 00:52:35 I really appreciate it, pal. Anytime, Jeff. Love the conversation. There he is. The great Tyra Kalbashir, who covers the Washington Capitals for Monumental Sports. You like that one, Zach? If your bag has wheels, you don't. You've probably heard that one before. Yeah. The wheelie bags were not something that were going to happen ever in my households.
Starting point is 00:53:07 They weren't around for me anyways, but then even by the time it came to my sisters, my parents are like, this is not happening. you're learning to carry your own bag. It's toughness. That's what it is. You're not going through customs. You don't need wheels on your bag. You're going to play hockey.
Starting point is 00:53:25 Okay, a couple more things here to get to do here, and then we'll let everyone get on with their day. Crave the stats. Stat of the day. Presentation of Uber Eats. Uber Eats is enabling fans to maximize their fandom all season long with exclusive game day deals on the app.
Starting point is 00:53:41 From Game Day Eats to paper plates, and napkins if you're hosting to all the ingredients you need to make your favorite game day dip before during and after the game uber eats is assisting every hockey fans experience all season long i think i know what you got here today serve it up zach phillips yeah um december 10th 1969 johnny bower made his final nchl appearance at age 45 in a 6 3 loss for the maple leaves against the montreal canadians i've always maintained really quickly on on Johnny Bauer. And by the way, as much that I talked about earlier, oh, look at that beautiful. Oh, look at that beautiful picture of John Bauer, who by the way, as everyone said,
Starting point is 00:54:22 oh, Johnny Bauer never wore a mask. Myth, he did wear a mask. I'll be it briefly, but he did experiment with a mask. I've always maintained that Johnny Bauer's most popular leaf of all time cross-generational. There are like, there's a generation that it's all about Dougie and Wendell and Daryl and Mats, like they have their generations. But, you know, when you go to Maple Leafs games and they run those like old-timey videos and they bring it up to the very latest incarnation of the of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it doesn't matter whether you're seven years old or 70. People get that soap and warm water feeling for Johnny Bauer. I haven't seen a hockey player in Toronto resonate from young to old quite like Johnny Bauer. And I mentioned
Starting point is 00:55:06 Lou Nanny earlier. And I wish I had done it more. But there was one afternoon. that Johnny invited me over to his place in Mississauga where him and his wife lived and just to come into the basement and his basement is like a miniature hockey hall of fame and it's not just of Johnny but it's like all NHL stuff too and I was just so blown away
Starting point is 00:55:33 at how gracious and nice and charming and kind both Johnny and his wife were like for an entire afternoon just completely indulging me and I remember Zach leaving and going like wow I just had like the most special experience in the world I got to go to johnny bowers house and spend an afternoon there and go through all of like johnny's memorabilia and all these great pictures and looked at all the photo albums and wow i'm so lucky that that johnny let me do that and then i found out later
Starting point is 00:56:03 that johnny had done that for like hundreds of other people which just speaks to how great johnny Barrow was. I'm thinking like, wow, I'm the most special guy in the world. Look what Johnny did. Like, no. Everyone else has had this experience too. And I got a couple of other people, friends of mine, my good friend Jen as well, who was a huge Johnny Bauer fan. I called Johnny. I'm like, do you mind if my friend, Jen?
Starting point is 00:56:25 She's a really big, big fan. She wants to have the same experience that I did. And he's like, absolutely, send her. And she had the same experience. Like, Johnny would do it for everybody. He was just that. I was going to say, it would have been unreal if you walked out the door on your way out and someone was walking in, John. John's off the door.
Starting point is 00:56:41 Hey, welcome. Next. All right, you're going to get the tour too. All right. Put on another party. All right. Here we go. Johnny Bauer,
Starting point is 00:56:49 one of the nicest people in the world and one of the best net minders in the world as well. Oh, wait, one sec. I have a question for you from the chat. I didn't know this. General Sornis says, Johnny Bauer recorded a Christmas song.
Starting point is 00:57:03 Asked Jeff if he's heard of it. Oh, honky, honky, honky the Christmas goose. No, never heard of it. Honky, honky, honky, the Christmas boost. It was recording Yorkville in the mid-60s, and there was a bunch of studio musicians that were a part of it and listed as playing guitar N. Young, which we wonder, it might have been Neil Young
Starting point is 00:57:18 because he was a studio musician in Yorkville at the time, and I never heard of it. I should have known. It was a lot. I'll tell you what, whenever, and I would do like a lot of events, and I still do a lot of them over Christmas time, you host hot stoves at various ranks.
Starting point is 00:57:33 I remember being at one of the Canlan ranks in southwestern Ontario, and I was doing a hot stove and Johnny was there and one of the questions from the audience was Johnny I was right on Christmas time Johnny can you sing a couple of bars of honky the Christmas goose and you think like Johnny
Starting point is 00:57:50 be like oh no no that was so long nope Johnny pop right up and grab the microphone and saying honky the Christmas goose to everybody there I can't believe so first of all you're a Maple Leafs fan when this show is over you are going to stay right where you are
Starting point is 00:58:06 and you are going to listen to honky, honky, the Christmas goose by Johnny Bauer. That is your homework today, young Zach. So yes, generous one is I'm familiar with honky the Christmas goose. I should have known. It's a great one. No, no, no, that's fine. Trust me.

I really appreciated, and I think Wyshinsky did too, your text to us yesterday, which is, well, one of is living up to their deal, their end of the bargain here. So the most frustrating part was I look at the Carolina game, and they scored four goals,
Starting point is 00:59:28 and I don't have a Svetnikov goal in that one. Come on, Svechtikov. When you finished with one assist there, Damadov finished with an assist in the Tampa game, that one obviously didn't go very well. for the HABs so yeah fair enough but we want one for three on the puckoff parley this is by far the dumbest name i've come up with it's not covers a lot of ground hold on that covers a lot of ground i can't wait to who that covers a lot of territory let's see what you got it's going to i genuinely
Starting point is 00:59:55 think this is going to shock you how stupid this name is uh this one i like the players in okay and i couldn't figure out a name or a theme to tie them all together so i came up with this This is called Can Art March? Question mark. Can Art March March? Artemmy Panarin, Brad March on, March on, but March on. And Jared McCann. Can art March.
Starting point is 01:00:26 Panarin plus 190, Marchon plus 175. McCann plus $2.35. $5 pays $128.58. sense um i really want to hate this i like i really want to hate it i really want to like honestly i really want to roast you uh but i can't kind of love it i'm like i like the players i'm like there's no way for me to naturally tie these guys together yeah so ken art march is the parley for tonight we will be uh paying attention panarin you know your assignment brad marshand you know you
Starting point is 01:01:05 your assignment. Jared McCann. Man, Seattle's got a score. Like, holy geez. Jared McCann, you know the assignment. Can Art March. When did that come to you? Is this like staying up late at night and you can't fall asleep, but they have something
Starting point is 01:01:18 goofy for the show? No, this was like 30 minutes before the show because I had the list of the players and I'm like, I don't know what to name this. I don't know what to name this. And I have more important things going on. And finally, I was like, maybe there's something in their names. Well, kind of. Nothing like a deadline to spur on action.
Starting point is 01:01:40 Nothing like a deadline. All right, great stuff. Can Art March will be watching for that tonight. Yes, sir. You have there's more. Quickly, I just want to get some shoutouts for stuff across the network. That's coming up tomorrow that I want to make sure to shout out. Yeah, I know we got a motor. I wanted to get that in. We'll use it tomorrow. The post-game press conference by Lindy Ruff yesterday,
Starting point is 01:02:47 everyone's focusing on the glove pass issue. There was another one in the presser. That's kind of flown under the radar here a little bit. We'll go over it on tomorrow's show. In the meantime. Thanks for doing today. When the other guy joins us. No, geez.
