The following podcast is a Dear Media production.
She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire.
Fantastic.
And he's a serial entrepreneur.
A very smart cookie.
And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you along for the ride.
Get ready for some major realness.
Welcome to The Skinny Confidential, him and her.
Aha!
Bonus episode. Hi, we are back. The Skinny Confidential, him and her show. You just have
me today because this is a little cheeky bonus episode. So basically I went to Create and
Cultivate in San Francisco about a month ago, and I got to speak on stage with this incredible
doctor, Dr. Anna Guanche. She's on Instagram. She's major. And then I got to speak on stage with this incredible doctor, Dr. Anna Guanche. She's on Instagram.
She's major. And then I got to also speak with Jacqueline Johnson who owns Create and Cultivate.
She's such a badass hustler. And I just thought that it would be fun to go ahead and record the
episode for you guys to listen in on. Obviously, Create and Cultivate only happens at certain
times of the year. And I thought it's important to include everyone so they could hear this conversation. There are so many tangible takeaways
about staying out of the sun and what skin procedures you should do. And Jacqueline asked
some really hard hitting questions. And it was just sort of like a conversation and a round table.
I thought it would be fun to put it on the podcast. You know what I mean? So we got it
recorded for you guys. So create and Cultivate and the Skinny Confidential teamed up with Rock Skincare
to do this podcast. It's super fun. Rock is a French brand that was started in France,
but is available nationwide in the United States. I'm very much about French brands after going to
south of France and spending time in the pharmacies there. So I couldn't be more excited. And just a
little side note, so many of Rock's products help visibly reduce lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging. And their ingredients are legit. So
you got to check them out. With that, let's welcome Dr. Anna and Jacqueline Johnson to
the Skinny Confidential Podcast. This was at Create and Cultivate, like I said, in San Francisco
with Rock Skin Care. There's no such thing as too much Lizzo, right? Hey ladies, how are you doing?
Thanks for hanging with us in the heat. Who knew it was going to be like 72 and sunny in San
Francisco? We were prepared for the worst, but you guys are really bringing it the sunshine and we
love it. So I am so excited for our next conversation. So hands up, how many of you have Googled around skincare, anti-aging, and kind of found
the results kind of confusing?
There's a lot of information out there, and it's really hard to sort through the clutter
and figure out what works, what doesn't, and what's good for you.
In fact, I Googled it actually this week before this conversation, and there's over 19 million
results.
Cool.
Thank you for that help. And the term anti-aging has over 19 million results. Cool. Thank you for that help. And the term
anti-aging has 376 million results. So the whole thing, I honestly don't even know where to start.
So today's conversation is going to be a little truth serum. So we are going to have an amazing
conversation with two of my really favorite people that are going to be really amazing. So
I want to kick it off by saying we've partnered with Rock Skincare, a brand that you guys may or may not know about,
but was born in the 1950s in Paris.
So it's been around for a while.
It is proven.
And if you haven't checked out their macaroon shop,
I definitely, definitely suggest you should.
And we're here today to find out what women are really looking
for when it comes to those products,
but also what they're finding and what the real information
is out there.
So first and foremost, I want to introduce our panelists to the stage.
Can we give a warm welcome to Dr. Guanche from Rock and Lauren Everts Bostic,
creator of the Skinny Confidential, a blog, a book, a podcast, and YouTube channel.
Welcome.
We're going to dip into this shade back here.
We are so excited to have you guys.
Thank you for having us.
Absolutely.
So first let me introduce you, Dr. Anna Guanche, affectionately known as Dr. Beauty.
Love that name.
A board certified dermatologist, celebrity beauty expert, and founder of the Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, California.
So expert,
but also entrepreneur, which we love. In addition to your private practice, you're a member of the dermatology staff at UCLA, and you've written a book, Seven Days to Sexy, which I'm here to find
out what that means and what we can do to get there. Definitely. Well, we're so excited. You
are really going to bring the truth to the truth serum and
tell us what's what and of course lauren everett bostick no introduction needed
the skinny confidential we all know and love her um she's an ogc and seer which we love we've been
working together for i mean five years now it's amazing to see all of your successes. So let's kick it off with some rapid
fire. My favorite anti-aging hack is? My favorite anti-aging hack. I love to use Retin-A every
single night. I've done that for 20 years. Amazing. Mine is facial massage. I feel like
you guys know that if you read the Skinny Confidential, I think it tightens your skin
and you just get so much lymphatic drainage and gets rid of fine lines and wrinkles. And I do it with like a good oil.
Love a lymphatic drainage moment. The weirdest home remedy for skin I've tried. I'm excited
about this one. The weirdest thing I've tried is bird poop facial. No, that's not a thing.
That's not a thing. The geishas used to use this they use the bird
poop and they put it on their face and it has enzymes in it that exfoliates your skin so we
actually offer that at our office how so it works it's the geisha facial it works okay we're all
getting one when we get back oh wait i want to come in and get that done no that sounds amazing
um anti-aging the weirdest thing i've done is probably order olive oil from room service to remove my makeup.
I'm just like known for that because I don't want to use a makeup wipe on my face.
I feel like it pulls the skin down.
That's a great hack.
I love that, especially if you're traveling a lot because I always forget mine.
Because it's like I don't want to bring the big bottle and then chuck the bag.
You don't want to lug it around.
So you just order it from downstairs.
Love that.
Travel hacks as well.
So I want to talk a little bit medical to start with because I'm actually genuinely curiously about this.
But what actually happens to our skin as we get older?
Like what is the science behind it?
And can you tell us a little bit about like what are wrinkles?
Tell us how it happens.
So unfortunately, what happens to your skin is you reduce your elastin production over time.
Your elastin peaks when you're born.
Your baby's going to have a lot of elastin and then over time we decline production of that.
Your collagen is decreased in your dermis, which is the thick part of your skin, the height of your skin.
And you start to see brown spots, wrinkles, and broken blood vessels
because your skin no longer compensates for the damage that happened
to it over time. So you're getting skin damage from the time you're born all the way till now,
but as you get older, you just don't compensate as well. So you start to have these growths and
all the things I hear about all day long from my patients, broken blood vessels,
pore size increases, all that terrible stuff. Yes, that's what I'm here to fight. No, it's really interesting
because, like, obviously I'm 34 now,
and I feel like in the past two years,
all of a sudden, like, you wake up,
and you're like, what's that?
What's this?
So for me, at least, you know,
I'm so curious and always trying, like,
different products to see what works,
but what I really, you know, am interested in,
and what creating cold feeds is really all about
is that real talk advice, which, Lauren, you give to your readers.
It's like the no BS.
This works.
This doesn't.
This is why I'm using it.
So can you tell us a little bit about some of the craziest search terms you've had on Skinny Confidential and your readers have asked about?
Yeah, I feel like we've talked about everything.
I mean, I really try to bring experts on and just share, like, my story while also mixing in experts like you.
We've talked about everything from vagina steaming to boob jobs
to injectables to sex to sex positions to lube.
I mean, I feel like there isn't anything we haven't talked about.
Yeah, kind of everything.
And do you feel like people aren't asking those questions?
Because, you know, the Internet's a great forum for that.
Like, you don't want to go around like,
so guys, let's talk about vaginal steam.
Do you feel like people want to get that information
and feel like they can come to you?
You know, and kind of get that information from a community.
I'm part of the Skinny Confidential Facebook group.
And if you're not...
Wild. Wild.
It's lit.
It's the craziest thing.
I'm going to join.
Oh, yes, you have to.
The conversations are amazing
though. Like women truly asking these types of questions. Yeah, I just think that like for me,
you know, taking a picture in the street of my dress is just like not enough for me as a consumer.
So I really try to put myself in the audience's position and I want to know the nitty-gritty. And
not only do I want to know the nitty-gritty, I want to hear from different walks of life. And I want to know the nitty gritty. And not only do I want to know the nitty gritty,
I want to hear from different walks of life. So I want to hear from, you know, different influencers,
different podcasters, different experts. I want to hear from the everyday girl. I want to also
connect with my audience, you know, on the secret Facebook group. And I want to bring that together
and make like a medley of just all the tips, tricks, and hacks that are amazing in one spot.
So I personally think people
do have a lot of these questions and they're embarrassed to ask and they're asking Google.
And so I've really tried to create a space where you do discuss these taboo topics that I've always
been an overshare. Like that's ever since I was born. And so I feel really comfortable to be the
facilitator of that and talk about these
taboo subjects. So I'm all about it. I know. I love that because I think it's so true. I think
there's this weird kind of feeling when you like see someone with really amazing skin and you want
to be like, what products do you use? Like it almost feels like it needs to be a secret, but
it really doesn't. And so Dr. Gwadre, for you, who sees a ton of different women in your office all
the time, what's top of mind for them when who sees a ton of different women in your office all the time,
what's top of mind for them when it comes to anti-aging, and what are the most common questions you get?
The first most common question I get from my patients is, why is this happening to me?
So people look in the mirror, and they go, I feel fabulous.
I feel great inside.
I feel young, but I look in the mirror, and I don't look the way I feel inside.
So that's one of the biggest first things is what's happening.
I'm trying to do everything right, you know.
And, you know, they want to know what works.
They want to know not just for their money but their time because we are playing with time here.
What cream are you going to put on every single night?
What eye cream are you going to use every single night?
It's not just how much you paid for it, but you have to have discipline and put this on every night.
What if you're doing nothing? What if your skin's not going to respond to it at all?
And it's like bogus. So they want to know what really works, what has active ingredients that
are proven. Is there anything that actually I can put on my skin that will reverse the signs of
aging? That's what they want to know. Does anything really work? So this one made me laugh. Did you
guys know? I'm sure you guys know this, but a popular search online is about hemorrhoid cream on your eyes.
So I've heard of it.
Have you guys heard of this?
I've heard of this, like this, like, you know, fun insider hack.
But let's demystitize this.
Is this a thing?
Is it the truth?
Is this like the right information?
Should we stop doing that?
It is true that you can de-puff the eyes because we're de-puffing hemorrhoids, right?
It's a vasoconstrictor. However, there's definitely more cosmetically elegant ways to make the area
around your eyes look nicer. But does it work to some extent? Yes. But a lot of people feel that
menthol that's also associated with it burns their eyes a little bit. So it's kind of a double-edged
sword. I agree. And also that checkout is real uncomfortable. Like in general, checking out
with that hemorrhoid cream, you're like, it's for my eyes. Preparation aid. Don't worry about it.
So Lauren, for you, you obviously have this like amazing community and you work with a million
different brands, but you give true testimonials and really sort of honest feedback. So why was
that important to you and how do you kind of choose the brand partners you're working with? I'm really, really specific and strategic with who I choose to work
with. There's been a lot of times where I've left a lot on the table because it wasn't the right fit.
I made that mistake once super early on in my career. It wasn't the right fit of a brand. And
I listened to the audience's feedback and adjusted. I think what I
try to do is I try to use the product for at least a month and then I have girls in the office, Mimi's
here, who are very serious about their skin and I give them the product to use. Sometimes I test it
on my husband because he is like very into skin and being dewy right now. It's like he thinks it's his thing, but I've manipulated him into it.
Michael is dewy.
He is so dewy.
He's so dewy.
He's dewier than me.
I'm like, bitch, what are you doing?
Yeah, so I just really, I look at the ingredients.
I look at, I even look at, you know,
the colors of the brand.
Like I don't, I know this sounds crazy,
but I don't want some brown, ugly
product that someone doesn't want on their vanity on my Instagram feed. And I know the audience
doesn't want it on their Instagram feed. So I'm really just careful with what I promote. I, you
know, I probably try to tons and tons of products and I probably promote 10 of them. And then I also,
I like to have a product that I keep going back to. I don't just want a one and done
situation. It needs to be something that keeps showing up in my life and something that I know
the audience will actually go use and it won't collect cobwebs. Yeah, I agree. I think there's
a lot of product fatigue. There's so much out there. It's like, I feel, I mean, at least for
me, it's like, I just want the product that works and I want to stick to it. And I don't want to have to keep trying to figure it out.
So I love that.
So I think a lot of us, you know, we self-educate, right?
We search online.
We try to find the right tips.
We look to influencers.
We're kind of figuring it all out.
And Lauren, for you, before your pregnancy, I'd love to know, you know, your skin care journey.
What goes into choosing it?
How have you, you know, looked into different ingredients?
How is that important to you? I'm really inspired by other countries. journey. What goes into choosing it? How have you, you know, looked into different ingredients? How
is that important to you? I'm really inspired by other countries and the way they do things. So we
went to France for a month last summer and I just, I like sit and watch the French girls and that
sounds really stalkery and crazy, but I just like to observe and see what they're doing differently. And, you know, it's a lot of,
a lot of facial massage, a lot of oils, rock, which is perfect. They're using a lot of retinol.
They're using, you know, the wrinkle cream. There's all different kinds of things that they're
working into their skincare routine. That's maybe a little bit different than Americans. I feel like
Americans have like a very more is more approach. So that was interesting. And then
obviously like Korea, I mean, Korea, I'm so inspired by, I'm dying to go there. And I just
really try to watch and observe and see what other people are doing and just implement it into my own
skincare routine and see what works and share, you know, whatever that is. Yeah. So I want to
talk a little bit about retinol. I was actually telling the ladies backstage. So I grew up watching my mom use retinol, but you know,
when I was so young, she was like, no, no, no, it's not for your skin yet. But then I always
had this sort of fear and hesitation around it. Like, oh no, it's going to like, you know,
make my skin strange. But I started actually using it recently a few months ago and my skin
has absolutely changed. And I'm like, oh my God, I waited way too long. But I want to talk a little bit about retinol in general because I think there's a lot of confusion and interest in, like, trying to understand, you know, how much you use, when you use it, why it works, what is it.
Can you fill us in on all those details?
So retinol is a vitamin A derivative.
So it is naturally found.
But the way it works is that it stimulates collagen production when you apply it to the skin. It exfoliates, especially in the first few
weeks it exfoliates a lot, but then as you keep using it, it keeps your skin
looking dewy and exfoliated. It reduces pigmentation and fine lines. So retinol
is the easiest way to get Retin-A, which is the prescription strength stuff, on
your skin without a prescription because retinol is converted to retin-a by an
enzymatic process on your skin. So I love retin-a. As I told you, I've been on it for like over 20
years. And you'll be hard-pressed to find a dermatologist who's not using retin-a. Almost
all of us are using it every night. And so you mentioned at the beginning, you obviously don't
want to like layer it on. Can you talk through like if you're just starting out? I'm like mostly asking for myself at this point. So just between me and you. Yeah, so tell me.
So because of the retinoid reaction, which is the first six weeks you get a little peeling and
redness with retin-A sometimes, that is something your skin will adjust to. So in the beginning,
sometimes I tell people to start every other night and then work their way up to every night.
Having said that, you know,
the retinol is a little bit milder than retin-A. So you could start every night. If you see a little
peeling more than you want, then you can drop it to every other and then try to work your way back
up to every night. I noticed since I've been pregnant that my skin is like kneading it. So I
can't wait for the next. Yeah, I can't wait to get back to it. Well, it's interesting how your body changes along with that.
So self-care is a huge topic.
Obviously, beauty is a huge industry.
Skincare especially has really risen to the top of those conversations.
What do you guys attribute that sort of rise in interest to?
Well, definitely people are starting to understand that prevention is key.
So I'm seeing a lot of much younger millennials coming in for their Botox.
We call it baby Botox.
We do little Bella Micro Gold procedures to smooth out their skin,
and they're starting at a very young age because they know about prevention.
And so what we're seeing is a lower and lower age group wanting to do great skin care
and just prevent aging altogether,
which is a fabulous idea because like I said, you start aging, your skin starts aging from the day
you're born. And there's some estimates that say you get most of your sun damage before age 15.
I mean, I think prevention's key too. I think that's so important. I think people are starting
to realize it's important to get ahead of the problem as opposed to fixing it when it's already there. I'm a psycho about the sun. I'm always
staying out of the sun and prevention is like one of the main topics on the blog. But I also think
just to add to that, that we're in a day and age in 2019, I think where a lot of women don't want
to look like someone else. And what I mean by that is
I feel like 10 years ago, you would say, oh, I want to look like this movie star or I want to be like
this person. Now it's just like everyone wants to be the best version of themselves. And self-care
is that. It's like investing in yourself and just being the best in every single arena. So I think
it's like a medley of that. Yeah, absolutely. Like I'm not a beauty junkie. I like love people who are into it and can do it,
but I am a skincare junkie. Like I really try to take care of my skin and it's something my mom
was always very passionate about from a young age, you know, with me and my sister. So I think
it's also something that like, you know, like you said, it's prevention, it's self-care. It's like
also just being proactive, you know, about, you know, your health and your wellness and all that.
So speaking of which, you know, I haven't been told this today.
Thank you guys so much.
But you look tired, something that you can hear often.
I got three hours of sleep last night.
So, you know, feeling tired but pulling it together.
Fabulous.
Thank you.
But I want to know, let's talk about under eye dark circles.
Let's talk about, sometimes I try to remove my makeup
and I'm like, oh no, that's just there.
That's just a dark under eye circle.
So can we talk a little bit about prevention with that,
besides sleep, and like how you can kind of tackle those problems?
Well, I love the Rock Retinol Correction,
the eye cream that they have. It has the mild version of retinol and it helps with lines,
dark circles, puffiness, all those three things. And it has clinically proven results. So within
four weeks, you see an improvement. Within 12 weeks, you can see 50% reduction in lines.
And in some studies, that correlated to looking 10 years younger. So they've
done all these really elaborate studies estimating how many wrinkles around your eyes equates to your
age and people's perception of you. And so it really is effective in that sense. But there are
some other things you can do. You can drink plenty of water, don't stress out, get lots of sleep.
You can try to lay on your back when you go to sleep
and stay on your back.
Good luck with that.
Oh, really? That's a thing?
Why?
Oh, yeah.
Because all your blood?
Yes.
I'm not a doctor.
You don't want swelling in your face
because when you swell, your eyes get puffy
and they come back down.
You do that overnight every night,
then you get little crinkles around your eyes.
It's like deflating a balloon.
So I tell people, low-salt diet if you can, lay on your back if you can, and then also wash every single drop of
makeup off every single night. Don't sleep with your makeup on. And put your eye cream on and
your night creams on. So the summary is good skin takes discipline. Yeah, no, that's fair. You got
to do the work. And how long do you see
results? Like what's typical? Because sometimes I just get over it after a couple weeks. I'm like,
do I have to keep doing this? But like, what's the average? I would say four to six weeks of
consistent use. And I will say consistent use again, because a lot of times people are like,
I tried that eye cream and they tried it for two days or they tried it twice a week or something like that
when they remembered. But I say good skin takes discipline because you have to do these things
every single night. Put your cream on every night, wash your makeup off every night, you know, all
that. And four to six weeks, I would say. Got it. So I need to commit longer. Clearly. Yes. And for
eye cream, is that a day and night scenario or is that just night? I would say nighttime. Nighttime.
Okay.
So obviously we're talking about anti-aging and all those different things, but I would love to talk a little bit about your personal philosophies when it comes to getting older,
your feelings about aging.
You know, I think we're in a very like positive space around that, you know, now where it
really does feel like it's coming from a place not where you're like, I have to look pretty,
but it's like, I want to look good for myself.
Yes. A very empowered approach that everybody is taking now which is
wonderful to see there's no shame in being beautiful and wanting to be beautiful and having
great skin and it's all for you and your confidence you can put your best face forward
but what was your question dude I mean you answered it that was great you nailed it what
would I tell my younger self yes oh. Oh yeah. I would tell,
I was really hard on myself when I was young. It was very, very sad. I hated everything. This was
bad. That was bad. I taught aerobics twice a day, six days a week, but I wore a sweatshirt to cover
my butt. Little did I know that this butt was going to be the thing that was in, you know,
I think that like trying to love ourselves, which is what we're talking about a lot, self-care, self-love at a younger age so you can get the 911 a lot younger and not have to suffer all those years would be a great thing to do.
So actively trying to overcome some of the things that you don't like about yourself or doing a little something about it to make it better and just being empowered and put your best foot forward.
Yeah, I love that.
Go ahead.
I just, I feel like when it comes to aging, I really try not to give it any energy, like thinking of a number.
I think that that's overwhelming and you're wasting your energy towards something you
can't control.
It's going to happen.
So it happens to everyone.
So I try not to give that any energy.
But as far as what I do to stay proactive when it comes to, you know, keeping things youthful and tight, definitely a little bit Botox, some facial massage, some wrinkle cream like we talked about.
I try to stay out of the sun.
Tons of SPF.
I'm a sleeper.
I need to sleep.
Under eye circles, like I am a big fan, again, of lymphatic drainage.
It's changed my life.
I had double jaw surgery and was swollen for three years.
So I really feel like I've been a practitioner of swelling, which is unfortunate.
It was the worst.
And so that lymphatic drainage just really tightens and contours everything.
So I think when you wake up and you're hungover, like that's the number one thing is to like
really get the blood moving in your face.
And then, of course, I try to sleep, like, a little upright with my silk pillowcase.
I full sleep on my stomach.
I've really been messing this up forever.
I have no idea.
Wow.
How do you breathe?
I don't know.
Somehow I make it through the night.
Okay.
It's a real miracle.
I start out on my back trying to sleep like a princess, and I end up smashing my face into the pillow.
You just don't want to do that, but it has to happen.
Yeah, I get it.
But I totally agree.
I think it's really awesome, this next generation.
You know, obviously we grew up with a certain sort of stigma and attachment to, you know, being skinny, being perfect. And I think this next generation is really embracing, you know, their own sense of beauty and positivity around it, which I'm really excited to see.
So from a professional perspective, what are some of the things like
to keep your skin health on track? You know, what are your top tips? Break it down.
So again, to keep your skin health, try to manage your stress, meditate. That's a big thing. And
wear your sunscreen every
day. It doesn't matter if you're in the sun or not. Look at you guys. You think you're not in
the sun, but you're a little bit in the sun, okay? I'm in the sun a little. But anyway, so wear your
sunscreen regardless because you never know where you're going to get caught somewhere talking to
somebody in the parking lot, whatever. So just make it, you know what I mean? You never know
when you're going to be on a stage in the parking lot. You see someone and you're like panicking. Okay. That's
how I am. I'm like, oh my God, can we run inside? You know? And so definitely sun protection,
definitely again, wash your face completely at night, put all your moisturizer, eye cream,
and you know, take good care of yourself. And one thing I tell my, I have a lot of people who want to be a doctor that follow me on Instagram and stuff. And they say, how do you have, you know, take good care of yourself. And one thing I tell my, I have a lot of people who want
to be a doctor that follow me on Instagram and stuff. And they say, how do you have, you know,
I have a family and everything. And they're like, how do you do everything? And I say,
I try to sleep at the same time, roughly every night, wake up at the same time every night.
That keeps your bio rhythms intact, right? So that's one of the things for skin aging too. You
want to not look tired and you don't want to be
tired. You want to be at your 100% as much as possible. So I agree. Routines are everything.
Yeah. You got to have a routine and unfortunately you have to have discipline. Yeah. No, it's true.
That's really the key. Lauren. I have had a perpetual brown mustache, like hyperpigmentation
since I was probably 17 years old, I went in and got a
glycolic peel and they didn't tell me like, you can't even walk to your car after a peel. You have
to have the whole hat, sunscreen, everything. So I walked out to my car. I probably went and laid
out. But what that did is it's actually been like a blessing in disguise because it's made me be so cognitive of the sun.
And so now I'm just batshit crazy.
Like driving gloves are in my car.
I'm not, I'm like being serious.
Driving gloves are in my car.
I have the biggest visor you've ever seen.
When I get out of my car to walk into 7-Eleven, I have a hat on.
You know, sunglasses, sunscreen on my hands, sunscreen on my chest. I bring it down to
my tits. I would go all the way down to my ankles. I mean, I'm like, I'm wild with the sun. I think
it's one of the most aging things you can do, unfortunately. Yeah. One of the things that,
can I add one more thing? Oh, of course. Is that, you know, a lot of times we take great care of
our face, but we don't take care of our hands and our neck and our chest.
And what happens over time, your face looks great, and then there's like a line right here, and you look great.
And then right here and down, it's brown spots, wrinkles, all this stuff.
And, of course, we can do some cleanup work on that as a dermatologist.
But if you prevent, it looks so much better.
So everything you put, you know, use products for your neck and chest and your hands.
Or if you don't have a separate product, just use the products you're using on your face on those areas.
And then as far as the car, there's a tint called 3M Crystalline.
It's a clear tint, so it's legal to have on your car.
Front windshield side. Mimi, write that down.
What's it called?
3M Crystalline.
Okay.
And it blocks out all of UV and 80% of heat.
So you can not worry about wearing gloves, but you can always be protected.
