Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a Dear Media production. One thing that Michael and I drink every single day and I've done through both pregnancies is bone broth. I was going to say the fountain of youth, but yeah, bone broth. Bone broth is the fountain of youth. And of course, you know, I've talked about this on stories. I always drink owl Venice. If I'm ordering at home, this is the bone broth that I like. They carry organic, locally sourced bone broth elixirs. They also have milkshakes and skincare and supplements, all different kinds of things on their site.
Starting point is 00:00:30 The bone broth though is incredible. So they have this number one seller. It's called the Owl Reset and it's an organic cleanse program. And this cleanse program is different than anything. I cannot wait to do it after this pregnancy. Basically, it's designed to heal the gut and restore balance. I've noticed if you look at all these cleanse programs, none of them are designed to heal the gut, which is wild. Owl Venice focuses on nutrient-dense, herb-infused
Starting point is 00:00:56 broth elixirs and milkshakes that are packed with ingredients to regulate your digestion. So the whole cleanse is based on healing. And obviously you're going to look tight and amazing, but it also reduces inflammation and draws out toxins. So this is like the go-to cleanse that I will definitely be doing after the baby comes. But their whole entire mission is to pack their broth elixirs and milkshakes with nutrients, whole foods, vegetables. Owl Venice has the best bone broth on the market. I'm telling you, order it, try it. I mean, you can add all different kinds of things to it. Sometimes I add noodles. It's so good, full of benefits. And exclusively for the Skinny Confidential listeners, Owl Venice
Starting point is 00:01:35 is offering Code SKINNY at checkout for 15% off. You're going to visit owlvenice.com for more information. Use Code SKINNY and get the bone broth. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you along for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the Skinny Confidential, him and her. With social media, you have to be on it day after day after day. It's like hourly in a way because of the stories now. But when I did it, I'd film five shows a day for a week in the Caribbean and I'd get home and I'd be a mom. Honestly, the rest of the time I was PR, I did a lot of talk shows. I did the Today Show for four years as their fitness expert.
Starting point is 00:02:29 I did, oh my gosh, every show you could think of. Well, I think it's really cool too because, as you were saying, creating content like we are today. She was really an original influencer because you would go out and call these brands and be like, Hi, what was it, Florida Orange Juice or something? You're like, will you please sponsor my show? And you would go to the CEOs. You would walk into Walmart CEOs everywhere and call them up and call them 30 times and be like, sponsor my show. Turn this up for your mom and maybe your dad too, because we have fitness queen legend icon, Denise Austin on the podcast today and her lovely, amazing entrepreneurial daughter, Katie Austin.
Starting point is 00:03:12 They are a force, man. First of all, they have some energy. A lot of energy in the room. A lot of energy. What's so amazing about her is that Will Ferrell actually beat his meat to her on Step Brothers. Yeah, I think you had to clarify that. In the movie Step Brothers, listen, we're going to get into a legal case here. You start to say Will Ferrell beat his meat to her. But in the movie Step Brothers, yes, he did partake in that activity to her.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Her daughter is like, the apple does not fall far from the tree because her daughter is dynamic, charismatic. She's beautiful. She has her own brand. They both are amazing. They're vibrant, charismatic. You guys are going to love this episode. We talk all things wellness, health, diet, and it's so sweet to have a mother and daughter on the podcast. I'm excited for this episode. Definitely send this to your mom. I feel like she'll freak out. And on that note, Katie Austin, she is a sports illustrated swimsuit rookie. She's a certified fitness trainer, health coach, author, blogger, model, entrepreneur. She's been featured on numerous television shows. She has her own Snapchat show. I mean, wow. And then, of course, her mother, Denise Austin, is a pioneer in the fitness industry for over 40 years. 40 years, you guys,
Starting point is 00:04:25 that is dedication. Best-selling author and creator of Fit Over 50 magazine, which I got to see in person. It's major. She is a champion for women and they both have all the energy in the world. Welcome mother-daughter team, Katie and Denise Austin to the Skinny Confidential Him and Her podcast. This is the Skinny Confidential Him and Her podcast. This is the Skinny Confidential Him and Her. You essentially started doing content in a different medium before anyone else did it. Yes. And you did it in a way, you distributed it differently. It was in everyone's videotape, whereas people were just, what, taking workout classes normally? Hardly. It was 1981. There were no gyms at all.
Starting point is 00:05:07 None. I started in a racquetball court. I rented out racquetball courts. And I loaded them up, all lined up, and put on my little music, and I taught aerobics. So is there, the first time you teach aerobics class in your racquetball gym, is there already like a line out the doorics class in your racquetball gym is there already like a line out the door was there like oh yeah because i do it too but oh no i had a
Starting point is 00:05:29 big group right away it was just beginning aerobics the word aerobics in 1981 is this like is this like richard simmons lisa renna day or is this it was richard simmons richard simmons It was Richard Simmons. I don't remember what he said. Yes. No, you didn't. Oh, yes. He's my friend. Yes, of course. I've been doing this for 40 years. Can I do a workout class with Denise,
Starting point is 00:05:54 Richard Simmons, and Jane Fonda? Oh, I wish he would. Richard won't come. I wish he would. He wouldn't? No. He's kind of recluse now.
Starting point is 00:06:03 He's done. Well, I mean, he had so much publicity. Yes. And then they did that show, you know, didn't they do a podcast and everything? I don't know. Where is Richard Simmons?
Starting point is 00:06:12 Yeah, exactly. We missed you. We missed you. Everyone would like and reach you. He was the best. Oh, yeah. You can come on our podcast if you want. Okay, so while I have you guys here,
Starting point is 00:06:22 you both look amazing. You have really good energy. Your eyes are sparkly. I mean, you both look amazing. You have really good energy. Your eyes are sparkly. I mean, you look like sisters. You guys are so cute. I had to go take a cold shower before I came back in the studio. You guys come with a lot of energy. Are you sure it was a cold shower?
Starting point is 00:06:37 What were you doing? Taylor had to go collect himself too. He's been in the back room closet. We don't know what he's doing. I want you guys to edit my breakfast on air because I feel like it's a lot of fruit and I'm eating a lot of fruit because
Starting point is 00:06:53 everything tastes like metal, but I want you to tell me what you would do differently, but first if you could describe it to the audience, maybe that would be good. Okay, so she has blackberries, blueberries, cacao nibs, and a date and it's honestly a good portion size. I will say that. And, you know, you are pregnant, so it's great nutrients.
Starting point is 00:07:10 But at the same time, I would add a little bit of Greek yogurt. Yes, plain. Yeah. And you need some protein in there. That's a lot of, you know, sugars. It's still beautiful and fruits are very important. But I'd do half of that. And then inside that little day i'd
Starting point is 00:07:25 put a little almond butter in there so you get a little extra maybe a little flaxseed on top so then you get omega-3s you get some more protein to hold you off a little while and then of course the berries are perfect what are you guys's tricks for getting more protein in because i can't like eat a chicken i just can't do it everyone's like, have a chicken and broccoli. That sounds like dry and boring and I just can't do it. I agree. I think almond butter is a great natural one. I also love protein powder, like plant-based protein powder. I love a lot of beans. I eat a lot of beans. I ate a breakfast burrito this morning with lentils in it to get a little extra protein. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. That sounds good. Yeah. And I like a lot of natural protein, you know, lean protein like chicken,
Starting point is 00:08:05 ground turkey, salmon and stuff like that. But we're at a hotel. What do I... Do you guys order your... We're at a hotel for two weeks. Do you eat eggs? Eggs are turning me off right now. Normally all the time.
Starting point is 00:08:18 By the way, this is normally all the time eggs. This is not my breakfast when I'm not pregnant. But I just am trying to find creative ways to also get protein in when traveling. Okay. I love almonds. Do you take almonds on the road? I can eat almonds. Those are so good for you.
Starting point is 00:08:33 And also walnuts. I roast my walnuts. You put it in a nice frying pan. No oil. Get it a little warmed up. And then take it out and let it cool a little bit. Then put a little bit of raw sea salt and it's the best.
Starting point is 00:08:48 It tastes like popcorn. It's the best snack ever. And it's great on top of salads or anything like that too. Yes, and you'll have it for the whole week. It's so good. Walnuts, roast them, put sea salt on them.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Yes, only roast them for like two, three minutes. That sounds good. And not too high on heat. It burns because it has its own natural oils that help your skin, your hair. The way my mom talks is like her hand. She's very exaggerated.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I love it. Okay. So I want to go back to tell both of your stories separately. And I think it's only appropriate to start with your mom because you weren't there yet. When did you get into fitness? Well, I got my degree. I went to the University of arizona like denise austin was at the university of arizona can you imagine if denise austin
Starting point is 00:09:35 listen denise who knows in different times she also gave the commencement speech at u of a. Oh, I did, and I brought you a present. I wonder if it was like one of the years you were here. Okay, I had to wear the gown, and then I whipped the gown off and I turned my commencement address in a hot pink leotard. Denise, like I said, I mean, different eras, different times. I want to cross paths. Do not flirt with Denise in front of me. I have to, okay?
Starting point is 00:10:03 I have to. By the way, you guys, if you're just listening, she brought a newspaper clipping for Michael to see her in her leotard. That's pretty cool, though. Because we went to the same school. They asked me to be the commencement address speaker. And so the night before, we had a big dinner, and I asked the president of the university,
Starting point is 00:10:18 I have a little secret that I want to do tomorrow for the students. Am I okay? Are you okay? And is this appropriate? Then I wear the gown, of course, line up with everybody. want to do tomorrow for the students? Am I okay? Are you okay? And is this appropriate? Then I wear the gown, of course, line up with everybody. And then when I start my speech, I'll talk a little about how important it is to take good care of your body. And then I had it all pinned perfectly and I whipped it off. I said, the most important is taking care of your body. Let's all stand up and do a little aerobics. Hold on. So you were in college taking care of your body. Let's all stand up and do a little aerobics. Hold on. So you were in college taking care of your body.
Starting point is 00:10:48 You already knew. I was a gymnast. I was on a full athletic scholarship in gymnastics. So my whole life was training, discipline, you know, practicing, doing gymnastics. I was offered an athletic scholarship at University of Arizona, and that's where I went. And then I got my degree in exercise physiology, and I graduated in 80.
Starting point is 00:11:08 So by 81, aerobics was just beginning. And guess who I met? Jack LaLanne. Jack LaLanne used to have an exercise TV show. He's like the old man who did all kinds of feats. Swam across the Tecalina Island with boats. He was just the most amazing person. So I loved him, and I got a chance to be on his TV show,
Starting point is 00:11:32 and they loved me so much. Him and his wife, Elaine Lelaine. And I was a co-host, and I was like, this is the best thing in the whole world to be on TV, doing my favorite thing. I choreographed all the routines because I was a gymnast and I had to choreograph for exercise. So it became so natural to do aerobics. Have you always had this kind of energy? I know, I'm like, oh my God, I should have
Starting point is 00:11:56 had another cup of coffee. The baby will be fine. Literally she wakes up like this at 5.30 a.m. every day. It's pretty incredible pretty incredible yeah and I'm 65 now I just had a birthday and I feel great I feel like I'm 40 I still just last week I was with all my girlfriends I danced on tables
Starting point is 00:12:12 in Park City she's not lying it must be so much fun to have a mom like this she is like you said she's honestly my sister that's why we're so close too
Starting point is 00:12:21 because you know she acts like she's 21 I will literally be wearing leggings like you you know, her day and age. She was wearing this like a leotard short shorts and everything. Oh, up the rear. And she hates me wearing leggings. She's like, less clothes. Come on, show your body.
Starting point is 00:12:36 You're young. I just told you after I give birth to this baby that my shorts are going to show my labia. I am so ready to just let every single facet of my curve hang out. You have a really sexy wife. I am losing this weight. Why do you think she's got another one on the way? I am tightening things up. I'm getting there, which we're going to talk about.
Starting point is 00:12:58 And I'm going to be wearing this outfit that you wore on stage. I have it. Katie's worn it. I have saved all my old 1980s outfits and Katie and I have done some retro aerobic workouts together. Wait, you should dress up for her as Halloween
Starting point is 00:13:13 with the cap on. Lauren, I've done it six times and everyone's like, and I did it literally two years ago and they're like, give it up, Katie. Like you have to stop dressing like your mom. I'm like, but it's so easy because I don't like to dress up and like go after a huge outfit costume. I don't have that like, you know, time and effort in me.
Starting point is 00:13:28 And so I just take one of her old outfits and put it on. They're like, dude, it's too much. You do it too much. Dress up as the guy in the back who's beating his meat. Look at the Dean's face. Did you guys actually know
Starting point is 00:13:39 she was in Step Brothers, the opening scene when Will Ferrell was beating his meat to my mom? Yes. Yeah, fun fact. He asked me if he could use a portion of my TV show because I had a television show. So after Jack LaLanne, I got my own TV show and I started on ESPN back in the day, right when it was starting.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And so I had my own exercise TV show. So I was on ESPN for 10 years and then I got a lot of weirdo letters, you know, being on ESPN and all. And I moved on to the Lifetime TV for Women. And I was on there for 14 years. So I was on TV every weekday morning for 24 years, which is quite amazing back in the day. No, that's not, I mean, I start to think this is our sixth year. We just had our sixth year doing this. I'm like, man, it's been a long time, but 24 years of Jesus. Yes. And so when Katie and Kelly, our two daughters, were born, I was on the road.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I had to film my TV show right when she was six weeks old. I had to get back to Hawaii and nurse her and get ready for my leotards. I don't know if the networks get away with that now. Now they've got to give a little bit more time, right? Oh, yeah. Well, that was my time. I owned my own show. So it was a little different.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Can we go back? So Will Ferrell was beating his meat to you in your workout video. Yes, in one of my exercise TV shows. In Step Brothers. And I gave approval. And they even tell you what they're doing. When you receive it to make a statement that you say yes to, you know, this is fine with me.
Starting point is 00:15:01 I didn't care. Probably kind of flattering. Oh, my God. I would love it. if Will Ferrell was like I'm gonna beat my meat to you I would be like that's like an accolade to hang next to an Academy Award don't bother me mom mom he said on the show okay so so you you create this fitness brand you have two kids while you're doing it I feel like I have experienced how much pressure it is to be on social media now and with my daughter, I gained 55 pounds and it took two years to lose.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Is that not a lot of pressure to be this fitness icon and then gain all this weight and then you have to lose it right away? So many of you listened to the ClearStem podcast with the founders. It was wild. A lot of you guys want to know about acne. I'm not surprised, Lauren. Everybody has issues with skin, including me, right? By the way, I mean, I know a lot of people listen to that episode.
Starting point is 00:15:56 Side note, I'm not going to stop eating eggs. So I got to figure out what to use, which is why I like this partner, because I'm obviously going to have to use the products because I'm just going to keep eating eggs and breaking out. Okay. So first of all, if you struggle with acne, after talking to the founders of ClearStem, I would highly recommend you check them out. These women have done their research when it comes to acne. On their site, they also have anti-aging and non-toxic
Starting point is 00:16:18 skincare. Lots of different things. I personally am a fan of their sunscreen. It's a powdered sunscreen. Why I like it is I'll be in the car and I already have my makeup and sunscreen on and I can't reapply sunscreen. So I can just use their little stick powder on top of my makeup. I think that's absolutely genius. I keep one in my car and one in my purse so I can use it when I have makeup on. There's nothing worse than having to apply like white sunscreen on top of the makeup. It doesn't work, if you know what I mean. Clear Stem's education helps you identify your unique acne triggers and getting to the root cause of your acne. Just to give you a little bit of background on Clear Stem, it was formulated by the acne guru
Starting point is 00:16:57 and based on over eight years of treating acne at a San Diego acne clinic. So she's a practitioner. She understands acne and everything they created is not going to trigger pimples, which is very important. ClearStem's education helps you identify your unique acne triggers and gets to the root cause of your acne. So many of you guys DMed me pictures of your husband's back with acne or your friend's face with acne. And so many of you have said that ClearStem has helped. Use code SKINNY at checkout for 20% off your first purchase. It's ClearStemSkincare.com, 20% off.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Use code SKINNY. Use code SKINNY at checkout for 20% off your first purchase. It's ClearStemSkincare.com, 20% off. Use code SKINNY. You know, I really truly wasn't worried about it. And we didn't have social media at the time. So I didn't feel, actually, my ratings went sky high right after I had Katie. Because they wanted to see what the hell my tummy looked like. It's relatable, probably.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Yes, it's relatable. And so I never had a lot of pressure on myself. I was just honestly like a normal mom. This was my job. I loved it. It's my passion, but I wasn't hard on myself at all. I just knew it's going to come off. I'm going to be fine. My tummy's going to be flat again, hopefully. It is. I can confirm it is. I had faith. I had hope, and I didn't worry about it. We lived in Washington, D.C. where they grew up, where it wasn't. No one cared as much as they do now in Los Angeles. I mean, truly.
Starting point is 00:18:31 So when you would go out before you had kids, were you getting recognized left and right? No, I became more famous after the kids because it took a while to build my business and by that time i had vhs exercise videos then dvds and i sold 25 million between dvds and vhs yeah 25 million and it'll hold the record because you can't sell a damn one anymore right i'll always hold it nobody's gonna break it like what is that now with YouTube views? If you were to put that now. I don't think you could compare them because it's so different. Because if people didn't, you didn't have access.
Starting point is 00:19:12 I mean, YouTube, you can just watch endless amounts of content. This was limited back then, right? If you were doing the same type of thing, creating content, but you didn't have a DVD and you did. You weren't going to see the other person. I remember my mom. I feel like, I want to say it was a a step up exercise that she was doing with you. And, you know, your mom has all her DVDs and still does them all the time. I remember my mom.
Starting point is 00:19:34 What's the thing? What's the little platform that I guess it's called? Step aerobics. I had a Denise Austin step aerobics. Yes. Yes. You had a branded one. A branded one.
Starting point is 00:19:43 I had my whole line of exercises. Was it blue or green or something? I had different colors One was pink, turquoise and black Might have been turquoise Maybe my mom does that I'm going to call her after this And they were lightweight so you could pick them up and throw them back
Starting point is 00:19:57 Your mom is going to freak the fuck out When she sees a selfie with you and Denise Austin You have to flex your muscle Oh, we'll call her afterwards You know what, just i think she's in europe right now she just she said to get the hell out of it okay so what is so interesting to me and then i want to get into the baby stuff about you though is you were creating content exactly how katie and i are creating content back in the day and then you were content marketing to create a product. Yes. Meaning like you were showing how to work out and then you
Starting point is 00:20:31 introduced the step and you were showing how to work out and you had your video. What was that like compared to now? Oh, it's so different now because with social media, you have to be on it day after day after day. It's like hourly in a way because of the stories now. But when I did it, I'd film five shows a day for a week in the Caribbean and I'd get home and I'd be a mom. I would just, you know, I was picking them up from school. And I, so one week a month I was out of town. So honestly, the rest of the time I was PR, I did a lot of talk shows. I did the Today Show for four years as their fitness expert. I did, oh my gosh, every show you could think of. You know, PR was important back then. And that was my avenue.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Like you are having the podcast. This is your, you know, chance to feel, show the world what you do. And I just loved having a tv show because i was able to really you know just say anything i wanted just me alone i just would think of the come on you know squeeze your butt come on right now if you don't squeeze it no one else will and people are like write me and say that's the best line you know that is a good line sit up tall pulling that tummy there you did it. Well, I think it's really cool too because as you were saying, creating content like we are today, she was really an original
Starting point is 00:21:50 influencer because you would go out and call these brands and be like, hi, what was it? Florida Orange Juice or something? You're like, will you please sponsor my show? And you would go to the CEOs. You would walk into Walmart CEOs everywhere and call them up and call them 30 times and be like, sponsor my show.
Starting point is 00:22:06 And so I think that was really cool because she did have those brand integrations just like we do today, but in a different sort of distribution way. She was ahead of the times. Yeah, I called up cold calls to every single sponsor. I had three sponsors a year, but most of them stayed on for 10, 15 years, you know. And so I did all the calls, all the calls to the hotels where I would do, you know, spread out my little film crew and film five shows a day. So I became, you know, I had to call to get on the Today Show. It was 1984. They've never had fitness on the Today Show ever. Jane Pauley and Bryant Gumbel. And I called Steve Friedman 35 times executive producer till finally one time I said,
Starting point is 00:22:49 you know what, I'm calling him nine to five being a really nice, you know, good person. I'm going to call it an odd time. I called at 6.30 at night, Steve Friedman. I was like, oh, hi Steve, this is Denise Austin. You can't turn away a call from Denise. And he flew me up to Rockefeller Center, and I got down on the floor and showed what I'm going to do on your TV show.
Starting point is 00:23:12 You are going to give me four minutes, and I'm going to show how to get a rock-hard tummy. How to, you know, boom, boom. And he gave me a piece of paper, March 23rd, 24th, and those were my first dates on the show. And then I had a contract for four straight years, once a month. Dude, you were hustling. You made the word hustling before anyone was hustling.
Starting point is 00:23:30 I loved it. It was so fun. I did it myself. But my husband, mind you, he's brilliant. Yeah, what's his personality? He is so humble and so smart and such integrity. And he's a lawyer. So he did all my mom's contracts
Starting point is 00:23:46 and he was like their biggest supporter too. I have a hot tip. Marry a lawyer if you're really great at business. Find a lawyer, just like weed through Tinder or some shit. Look for the lawyer because it's like efficient, right? You just have the lawyer in bed with you.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Denise, I have to know this. What was your childhood like? What were your parents like? Where does this come from? Well, I'm one of five. I'm the middle child. Okay. And I was always busy, you know, being a gymnast at 11 years old, going to practice.
Starting point is 00:24:13 My dad played professional baseball, Joe Katnett. She played on, well, St. Louis Browns in 1942, 43. No, 46 and 47. And then my mom, she loved, she was a jump rope person. Because they're both active parents. Yes, very active. And we had five kids and we had to do everything ourselves. I mean, my parents didn't even drive me to college.
Starting point is 00:24:35 You don't say goodbye. Bye mom, I drove away with a friend. So you almost had to like stand out in a way to get your parents' attention because you have five kids. Yes, I didn't need their attention. I felt like my father was a salesman, M&M Mars Candy Company for 44 years. Wow. So I used to go when I was five years old with them to stores and do front-facing for all the
Starting point is 00:24:58 M&M. I'm sure you sold a shitload of M&M. M&M Mars Candy Bars. So I love to go with them to do all that. I thought that was so cool. Make sure the product is seen at eye level. So I'd switch it all. I was five. We have video of me doing that.
Starting point is 00:25:14 And I think it became normal when I had my own VHSs. Okay, let's go to that Walmart. Fix it all up. My sisters would do it for me. Isn't it amazing how you look back on your childhood and those moments like you refined to create the career that you have, like the styling of the M&Ms and then you're styling your VHS tapes. Right. It's really cool. Okay. So we're getting into the story, but first I need to know, because you told me off air, you also said it on air, that you had to lose the weight in six weeks after you had Katie.
Starting point is 00:25:47 But I didn't lose it. I had still a tummy. I didn't. I just tried my best because I didn't want to overdo it because I also had a three-year-old. You know, Katie has an older sister, Kelly. So I had her running around. I had to nurse Katie and get ready and choreograph my routines
Starting point is 00:26:04 and write out my musics. And so I had to get my and get ready and choreograph my routines and write out my musics. And so I had to get my leotards ready. So how are you losing weight? Someone who's sitting at the table really would like to know, inquiring minds. How are you losing weight? I mean, you said you didn't lose at all, but you're getting fit in those six weeks. Like, what are you doing? Because I need some tips.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Walking only. I only start with walking. Because you can't work out. Because you can't work out. Because you can't work out. So when I went to film that show, that was the first time I did my sit-ups. But I have great memory, muscle memory. It came right back and I just did it. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:36 So walking, like, are you walking like two hours a day to get in shape for that? Or is it just like walking? Like walking, just, you know, I really believe in isometrics. I, right after I had the babies, I tried to pull my tummy in, belly button in, almost like tighten up your abs, feel like you're tightening up. So I was very conscientious of good posture during pregnancy, pull the abs in. I'm an ab nut. So I believe it's the center of the body and protects your spine, protects your baby. So I was very conditioned and in shape while I was pregnant because I had to film exercise videos. And you want to hear a fun little fact? You know, my husband represents
Starting point is 00:27:18 Stephen Curry, the greatest basketball player ever, and.S., and family member. So my husband represented his dad for 17 years. So when I was pregnant, we did it with my oldest daughter, Kelly, and Stefan's mom was pregnant with Seth, the second boy. We did an exercise video together. She was, you know, one of my backup girls. And then we had to do an after-baby shape-up a month later, hold our little babies to prove it was a month later.
Starting point is 00:27:50 And then we did a workout after baby shape up workout for 20 minutes. Maybe I should just go back to the basics and just put your VHS tape on. Yes, come on, baby. I digitized them, so I got them on digital now. Honestly, I'm not joking. I think that simple works. And I'm not joking. I'm going to go pull up your VHS and try to do it during pregnancy. That's awesome. Just shake it, shake the baby in my arms.
Starting point is 00:28:11 Okay. So I want to know about you guys' relationship as you're growing up. What is it like to grow up with a mom who has so much charisma? She's out there. Like, is it annoying that when you go to lunch, people are coming up to her? Like, what is it like? If you are not on the beekeepers naturals train, you are missing out. It's time to upgrade the medicine cabinet. First of all, I still take the bee shots every single day. They're like liquid Adderall. They're these little shots of royal jelly. I like to have them with my tea and I'll just shoot one down. I kind of swish it in my mouth to let it sink in. It tastes so delicious and it gives you energy. And it's not like coffee jittery energy. It's just like a jolt of natural
Starting point is 00:28:55 energy. I have sent these to every single one of my friends. I make them like a wellness kit and they all come back raving about these shots. You have to try them. The other thing that I was blown away by, I hadn't tried it like at all because I wasn't sick. And then I got sick and I tried their Be Better nighttime cough syrup and I couldn't believe it. I stalked the owner on Instagram, Carly. She's been on the show and was like, please, please, please, can I get more of this? It is this cough syrup that works so well. It's the elderberry one and it's the nighttime support. First of all, it tastes so good, but it was the only thing that was working for the cough that I had. It like coats your throat
Starting point is 00:29:36 in the best way. It's not too sweet. And it was nice to actually take a cough syrup that wasn't quote unquote bad for me. Like it wasn't filled with all this extra shit because beekeepers naturals products are made with clean ingredients, which is why you can make over your medicine cabinet with them. This is the cough syrup that I would give my daughter. This is what I give Michael. This is now the only cough syrup I will use. And it's certified keto, certified paleo, gluten-free natural, always third-party tested, free of artificial colors, preservatives, fillers, alcohols, gluten, GMOs, pesticides, and refined sugars. Tell me another cough syrup that does that because I can't name one. Also important to note that B-Propolis
Starting point is 00:30:15 is so medicinal. It's full of vitamin B, vitamin C, zinc, and over 300 beneficial compounds. It also has minerals in it. So you're getting all these incredible things when you're taking the cough syrup. I'm very much about this. I'm not doing nasty ass cough syrup anymore. Today, Beekeepers Naturals is offering you an exclusive offer. You go to beekeepersnaturals.com slash skinny and intercode skinny. You get 25% off your order. Like I said, get the shots. Royal jelly shots are so good and get the elderberry syrup. You can't go wrong. That's B-E-E-K-E-E-P-E-R-S-N-A-T-U-R-A-L-S.com slash skinny or inner code skinny. Start feeling better every day today.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Well, first off, I grew up in DC, so it wasn't like growing up in Los Angeles where everyone would, you know, kind of maybe recognize her. It was a very, very normal life. But at the same time, like you asked her, did you get recognized a lot? We would be in, you know, grocery stores and airports and people would rush up to her and be like, oh, my gosh, are you Denise Austin? You saved my life and you helped me get out of my toxic marriage. You helped me, you know, get out of my toxic marriage. You helped me get out of things that I thought I would never be able to do. You helped me grow my confidence. And I think seeing my mom be so happy when she is helping other people really made me,
Starting point is 00:31:36 I guess, get in the fitness industry as well. But I think something that my parents really did well was never put too much pressure on me. Like it was never working out to be aesthetically like six pack or tone booty or lose weight ever, ever, ever. It was more like, let's get involved in athletics. I was an athlete my entire life. So it was my sister. And so I think it was more like, let's be strong girls. And something that she also, you did really, really well is you never focused on my looks ever, ever, ever, ever. I mean, obviously, you'd be like, you look so beautiful. But at the same time, it was like, you're so smart. You're so powerful.
Starting point is 00:32:10 You can achieve anything you want to. And I think that was really, really a great way to grow up as well, to not have your mom be focused on your looks and be involved in athletics, but never put too much pressure on me and just making sure I'm healthy in a way that I'm playing sports because I'm strong. Working out for my sport and competing in that way. She got an athletic scholarship in lacrosse at the University of Southern California. Yeah, so that's how I got to LA is I played lacrosse. I was on a scholarship for USC. Yeah. So, you know, being an athlete my entire life and having two parents who grew an empire in their own right, but support each other.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Like seeing that has really taught me just like hard work, determination. And, you know, my mom is a very great example of you can achieve anything. And she really believes that when you put your mind to it, you can achieve it. Well, what I like about both of you guys is that you've created your own future. You didn't wait for someone to come around and tell you, here, you can do this or hire you to do this. Or it sounds like you both have really just paved the way and created what you wanted to create out of nothing. She actually has created so much more than I ever did at this age. No, at your age, because you have, you know, so much. She created her own app. She works hard for that. She does, you know, Snapchat shows. She has, across the board, so many things.
Starting point is 00:33:29 Mine was just funneled into TV. I just want to be on TV. You know, it was focused. Where hers, she has so many interests. She can cook. So it's really cool because she could take it in eight directions. But I think that's also our day and age. Like you, Lauren.
Starting point is 00:33:45 You know, I think that's our day and age. Like when you grew up, you didn't have that option or social media. And I think I get a lot of hate online that's like, you know, you're just following your mom and you're doing. And they compare us a lot. And we're obviously very, very different. That's my number one hate comment. It's wild. Of course, Katie's going to be successful in the fitness industry because her mom is such an icon.
Starting point is 00:34:03 But I actually just don't think it works like that. I mean, yes, I'm not going to sit here and lie that my last name, Austin, does not help. I was on a call yesterday and was like, oh, my God, are you Denise Austin's daughter? Of course, it helps in some ways. But at the same time, a lot of people who are in, no offense to you, are in their 20s and are a little bit younger, Gen Z, actually don't know who Denise Austin is. No offense. I love you to death. But their mom does.
Starting point is 00:34:24 But people who I am targeting actually don't. My demographic doesn't. And plus, what I can do in social media is so vastly different than what my mom did with DVDs and VHS is I can't have my fitness TV show run for 30 years. And so it's really, really, really different. And I would love people to understand that more instead of constantly compare us. You know what's funny though? I mean, I think about this all the time. Like whenever there's somebody who's had a parent that's had success, right? And whether that's financially from like, you know, celebrity platform, notoriety, whatever it is, you're always inevitably going to get stuck in that comparison. But I think it's, you are rare compared to the majority of people you hear
Starting point is 00:35:01 about who completely squander those opportunities. Like you can go to any assortment of kids that grew up privileged and the high majority of those kids either end up fizzling out fucking up going over the like not doing something right so you should be proud of yourself that you are doing something that you're taking what your mom's done and furthering it right like that's the goal right like totally people need to get better with their attacks i think they need to get a little more creative i'm gonna be honest i'm a little bored with this i think you need to whiteboard you more creative. I'm going to be honest. I'm a little bored with this. I think you need to whiteboard. You're going to say that that's the hate comment that you get.
Starting point is 00:35:30 It's lazy. I don't think I've ever talked about this. I grew up with some privilege. Obviously, my dad is successful. We used to have conversations all the time. We'd drive him and I in the car. He'd be like, listen, I am going to take everything that I learned and all the hard work that I've put in.
Starting point is 00:35:46 And I'm going to try to share these experiences with you and pass them on to you. And my, my hope is, is that you will further, you know, that success that he's been able to have, which is what I'm obviously been trying to do. But he would tell me that I was like, you would have to be a complete moron to do worse because I'm giving you and telling you, not giving me, but telling you everything that I did that worked and telling you everything I didn't. So if you don't further, then basically you're a fucking moron because I'm telling you what works and what doesn't. Right. And I always thought about that. I'm like, of course, like if I have, now I have children and I'm going to try to give them everything that's worked for me and caution against everything that hasn't. And if
Starting point is 00:36:21 they don't get a little further, then it's like kind of, to my dad's point, it's like you're kind of, it's your fault. It's on them, right? So I always look at those arguments. I'm like, listen, you can go anywhere in the world and compare yourself and find people that are doing worse or better.
Starting point is 00:36:33 And so that game becomes a losing game. The idea is that you try to further and get better than where your predecessors and your ancestors were. And why not? Why not help them to, you know, just teach them she actually it came to her more natural her fitness with me because she really had uh when she was
Starting point is 00:36:52 little i used to take him on the road with me and my oldest daughter would just find lizards and play she would stare and watch and stand behind the camera and kind of do it when she was like two or three she would hang there with the film crew. So honestly, it was kind of in her blood already. And then, you know, she was a lacrosse player, so she couldn't think of anything but lacrosse and studying. And when she graduated from college, then she came to me and said, you know what?
Starting point is 00:37:20 She did a TV show on USC show, and she loved, you know, just teaching and helping people. And that's how her passion was created. It wasn't like, this is what you're going to do. I never even dreamed of it. The tragedy in life. I mean, there's the people who are like, well, look what you're doing.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Look how great you're doing. You're going, you had this great mom that taught you all these things. And dad, the tragedy would be if people looked at you and you were a complete fuck up. And they're like, man, she had all this opportunity. She has no entitlement type of personality. She's her hardest work you've ever met since she was little. She graduated from UOC, cum laude.
Starting point is 00:37:56 I mean, she worked really hard. She doesn't want a penny from us. She did everything herself. She won't take a penny, not a penny. I need to get my dad on the podcast to talk about how great I am. She is my number one fan. It means
Starting point is 00:38:13 something to me. I raised someone with character, with integrity who wants to do it herself. I mean, like me, I want to do it myself. And it's pretty cool that you guys are working together right now now how fun is this Like it's Tuesday and you can Get to work with your mom
Starting point is 00:38:29 Oh it's the best ever it's really awesome And one last thing I love the quote I think being self aware of our privilege is obviously key But at the same time it's like you can My mom can open a door for me but she can't walk me through it Sure that's my point So I still have to work really hard And people always ask me oh did you get into fitness industry because your mom? I actually have no idea because yeah,
Starting point is 00:38:49 sure. It was instilled in me maybe subconsciously since I was little, but I was an athlete my entire life. And so when I quit lacrosse, I didn't know what to do. And I saw all my friends around me, don't know, you know, what to do with their bodies and they're afraid of, you know, the gym because they're intimidated by it. And at the same time, I have a broadcast degree at USC and I did hosting. So I really just combined my love of hosting and my love of athletics into being a fitness personality. Yes, it's exactly what
Starting point is 00:39:14 my mom did, but at the same time, I find it my own passion as well in my own right. Good for you. Who's ever saying that to you? Go work on something else. We'll tell them to call you, Lauren. Get busy. The people, I always try to point this out.
Starting point is 00:39:29 So like say somebody was, say somebody, like I can acknowledge that I've had some privilege in my life, but say somebody is sitting around in the room and saying, Michael only has X level of success because of X, Y, and Z. My point, that conversation does nothing to me, right? I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. I don't even hear the conversations or I block them out. What it does is the person that's having that conversation or telling themselves that narrative about why they're not somewhere where they want to be and why somebody else is all that conversation is doing is holding them back.
Starting point is 00:39:56 So what I try to caution people is like, stop making excuses about why you're not where you want to be based on where someone else is, because that's not stopping the other person. It's just stopping you. So it's counterproductive, right? The idea is like, I want to be based on where someone else is because that's not stopping the other person it's just stopping you so it's counterproductive right the idea is like i want to look at anybody in any walk of life and say wow that's a successful person i can do that and i can do more like what's that conversation right like i want her to be successful in her happiness too and her relationships that's more as you age i i love that even more. It's way more important. And we have a very balanced life. And I think that's also what happened to her.
Starting point is 00:40:33 She's very well balanced because living in Washington, D.C., the White House was more important, let me tell you, or whatever. But it was a normal upbringing when you think about it. I mean, she was well-educated. D.C. has the best schools. But at the same time, I love her energy and her joy. She has such joy in what she does. Do you want to come to every interview that I do? This is very special for me.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Why did you guys choose D.C.? Just out of curiosity. My husband was a sports lawyer. And one of the biggest companies in sports marketing in 1983. When we got married is in Washington. So his sister was number one, the world in tennis, Tracy Austin. She was, she won us open youngest ever in the history of tennis. Yes. My husband played professionally. He was also on a tennis athletic scholarship at UCLA. So all four of our little family's been on athletic scholarships.
Starting point is 00:41:29 So Katie, what do you do now as your career, if you were to describe it to our audience wrapped in a bow? Okay. So long story short, I first worked for Fox Sports West and I did like hosting at the Super Bowl. I did NBA awards in overtime and I worked for the NBA. I think about two, three years ago when 2020 really hit, I started to focus more on at home workouts and created an app. It's called the Katie Austin app and I have my own show, Austin AF. I have my own Snapchat original show called Healthy Hacks. I am a Sports Illustrated swimsuit rookie. I just won the competition for Sports Illustrated.
Starting point is 00:42:06 I heard congratulations. That was my next question. Go on. Thank you. I can't wait to ask you about that. Yeah, I think my entire thing, like accolades aside or anything of like what I actually have, it's more so like making girls feel their best self through workouts and healthy recipes.
Starting point is 00:42:19 Sports Illustrated reaches out to you. Are you freaking? You reach out to them? I auditioned since 2017. I did Swim Search. So basically it's an online audition. It's a casting. So when I did it, 22,000 girls, I think, 22,000 girls tried out. It was a year and a half long process. And I got the call that I won in October, September of this year. And I shot in Europe, which was really awesome. I got to go to Montenegro. And the issue releases in May.
Starting point is 00:42:49 And so it's really exciting. And it's still so crazy to me. Okay, I'm buying an issue. I need to put that on my Instagram story. That must be like a full circle moment for you. Oh, it's beautiful. I never did it. I never had the opportunity or thought of it.
Starting point is 00:43:03 It's awesome. It's fantastic. That's a big accomplishment too. Well, I also did it. I never had the opportunity or thought of it. It's amazing. It's fantastic. That's a big accomplishment too. Well, I also like it better than they just called me because I went through the audition process and I went through the ringer to like get to where I am. And, you know, they really had to really know who I am to pick me. And so it feels like very rewarding to go through Swim Search and be and like win it as a rookie in that way.
Starting point is 00:43:30 All right. You guys are bombarded with a ton of detail, a ton of information on this podcast. That's what we like to do, right? Lauren loves the detail. I love the detail. We want to get all the specifics and all of the information we can possibly get out of the guests that we have on the show. With that, the information can sometimes be overwhelming. We get it. It's overwhelming for us too sometimes, but we'd rather have all of that information out there, all of it on the table, and then pick and choose what we think works best. When it comes to supplementation though, we have talked about so many supplements on this show. If I could only recommend one, I feel like, Michael, I can only get one right now. It's the only thing I can do. I got to just get one. I can't get 50 of them. I don't have the money.
Starting point is 00:44:03 I don't have the time. That's too much. I'm too overwhelmed. I got other shit going on. I get it. It took me a while to figure this out too. I've built the routine slowly over time. But if it was just one, it would be the athletic greens. It would be the athletic greens for multiple reasons. First, it's a probiotic. It's a prebiotic. It's got all of your essential nutrients. It's got your greens. It's got all of your essential vitamins. It really is the most well-rounded supplement. And what I love about it is it also doesn't break the fast. The way that I do it is I wake up first thing in the morning, I have a heaping glass of water
Starting point is 00:44:30 and I dump a scoop of athletic greens in there. That's starting my day right for my gut health, getting all my proper nutrients, getting hydration, getting the electrolytes, getting everything I need. And it's a great product. It's keto, it's paleo, it's vegan, it's dairy-free, it's gluten-free, contains less than one gram of sugar, no GMOs, no nasty chemicals or artificial anything. I take it when we travel. I take it at home. It's literally with me every single day,
Starting point is 00:44:53 no matter where I am, all the time. And I also think it's helped fix my under eye bags, in addition to giving me a ton of energy. Can't you hear it in my voice? So check it out. Like I said, it's the one supplement, the one product that I would recommend if you were just to pick one from this show. And to make it easy, Athletic Greens is going to give you a free one-year supply of immune-supporting vitamin D and five free travel packs with your first purchase. All you have to do is visit athleticgreens.com slash skinny. Again, that's athleticgreens.com slash skinny to take ownership of your health and pick up the ultimate daily nutrition insurance, athleticgreens.com slash skinny.
Starting point is 00:45:33 I would be stupid not to ask you guys your little hacks for food. Tell us about what you eat, both of you, because different ages. I want to know, you know, what does breakfast look like? Are you intermittent fasting? Are you waking up with chlorophyll water? Give us all your little details throughout your day. We are not into anything crazy, chlorophyll water type things. We're very, very simple. Like you said, simple works.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Not into intermittent fasting whatsoever. I eat a very, very balanced breakfast. I usually have avocado, sourdough toast. I have a piece of sourdough toast every single day. I don't think fresh local sourdough toast is bad for you. What's your favorite brand? My favorite brand of sourdough toast? It's called Superba. It's local, but it's a bakery or bread block if you're gluten-free. And so I have eggs.
Starting point is 00:46:18 And then for lunch, I have like a simple like chicken salad with some lettuce. Again, avocado, healthy fat. I drink a smoothie five days a week, a protein smoothie I love. I have a huge dinner, but I will say this, my biggest thing is never eating after 8 p.m. And so I think once I, you know, I'm not a huge believer in intermittent fasting. I do think it can work in some capacity, but for me, it's just not eating after 8 p.m. And I constantly move my body as well. So the onion rings that I ate in bed last night at 10.30 was not the move.
Starting point is 00:46:49 And the night before, the sourdough that I ate with... No, but I do that too. I think that's balanced. No, you know what? I'm just fucking going with it right now. When the baby's out, it's time to tighten the lips.
Starting point is 00:47:03 I never follow anything strict or any type of diet. I really just listen to my body and I fuel my body. I literally look at food as an athlete my entire life as fuel. I never look at it as restricting in any way. I was taught to chug two muscle milks after I lifted. Oh, wow. Muscle milk. That's vintage.
Starting point is 00:47:22 Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And so that's how, as an athlete, you have to eat so much food. And so that's how I still, I have to switch it a little bit, obviously, but I still eat like that. And Denise? Okay. I eat everything. I love food, but everything in moderation. I eat well, 80% of the time and then have my treats 20%. I love red wine. I love beer. I like a hamburger and french fries every once in a while. But I eat a lot of greens. I believe I put a whole tray, a cookie tray filled with veggies.
Starting point is 00:47:52 I sprinkle it with a little bit of salt and olive oil, put in the oven and I could eat that. I always have some form of good protein, obviously. I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And my favorite thing is a good breakfast. I don't do intermittent fasting. I tried it for two days. I did not like it. But I love to drink my coffee in the morning,
Starting point is 00:48:16 do my workout, and then have a nice breakfast. We always say something. Do you do a form of intermittent? Do you stop eating at eight as well? Well, I believe in eating breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper. Do you stop eating at 8 as well?
Starting point is 00:48:32 Sometimes I do. She goes to bed at 8.30, so probably most likely yes. I go to bed at 8 o'clock. You said you're a fan of red wine. Are you a fan of cocktails? Oh, yes. Katie makes the best cocktails. I unfortunately drink a lot. I love tequila.
Starting point is 00:48:49 I can't wait. I'm counting down the seconds. I love tequila. I think a huge thing, too, really simple and might be obvious for some people. Like you said, you love hamburgers and French fries. I think we eat a lot of amazing food, but at the same time, we portion it. I think that's the biggest thing is portions. And so if we're going out to dinner together, we'll order the hamburger and fries, but also
Starting point is 00:49:11 we'll share it with a salad on the side or with the vegetables on the side. So it is all about the portions. Yes. So like this Mack truck of fruit to my left is like, we need to work on the portions over here. I'm not really eating for two, am I? What about little wellness rituals that you do every single day? Like whether it's a morning routine or a nighttime routine or something wellness-y that you both do. And this could be something that you've done since you had your VHS tape. Well, one of the biggest things I do,
Starting point is 00:49:42 you guys, is I think about good posture all the time. You are your own architect by the way you sit up, by the way you stand. So if you have bad posture, your tummy has nowhere else to go but pooch out. But if you have a nice, good posture, sitting up nice and tall, suck in that tummy, be aware of the abdominals all the time. It really works. Feel as though you're wearing like a tight corset, Michael. Maybe I am. No, okay. But the key is, is posture plays so much in your health.
Starting point is 00:50:13 You're not crushing your organs. You're not letting things slouch and look, you know, excited. Posture is the key to feeling good. The oxygen flows better. You get more oxygen intake through your lungs. Oxygen equals energy. So remember that anytime you feel, you know, three o'clock comes around, deep breaths, move those muscles. Muscles give you energy. Muscles work miracles on your metabolism. I know all her lines. I also think something you say a lot is
Starting point is 00:50:45 if you squeeze your abs for five seconds and then you let go, that's equal to one sit-up. Yeah, tighten it like isometrics. Like someone's going to suck in the tummy. Tighten those abs. Five seconds. Tight, tight, tight. And then release and then do it throughout the day.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And throughout the day, I do stretches in my, you know, if I'm sitting for a long period of time on my computer, I get up. You burn more calories when you stand up than you do sitting down. So think about that. So at any time throughout the day, you want to move those muscles. It's all how many, 16 hours we're awake. How much did you move? So. Yeah, I don't think enough people are talking about the, because you sit so long now. This is not how we're supposed to be. Jordan Peterson, his 12 rules for life, Michael was telling me the other day, one of them is stand like a lobster.
Starting point is 00:51:32 The first one is stand up straight like a lobster. Because lobsters what? Well, there's a good one. I'm going to fuck it up. I'm going to mess up his whole thing. But his point is he actually like studied lobsters. And he said that lobsters that stand up straight with strong posture actually dominate in the field of lobsters and it's over
Starting point is 00:51:47 periods of time the weaker lobsters that couldn't stand up straight just get dominated by them and so more women go to the male lobsters that stand up straight more opportunity more food Taylor is slept over a porn hub right now Taylor you gotta sit up straight if you're gonna watch the porn hub but he applied and he went and studied humans and he actually said humans
Starting point is 00:52:03 that stand upright with good posture and walk in a room like you command more confidence, you can have more opportunities, you get more abundance in your life. Oh, I believe in that. You walk in a room with good confidence and a smile on your face and you feel good. Absolutely. I mean, you're a perfect example of that. Someone also told me, and I'm not like super fitnessy, so I don't know if this is true, that what you said about contracting your abs actually helps prevent dialysis. Yes. How do you say it again? Split while you're pregnant. And afterwards, you need to, you know, don't do anything twisty after the baby because that
Starting point is 00:52:36 could help split it. Okay. So everything's got to be pulled in. Do pelvic tilts. That's one of the best exercises. Back on your back, you know, like a bridge, but just go a little bit. And tighten the badge. It's time to get the kegel in, right? Always. Tighten the badge. Lift up right now. Come on. Lift up. Michael, come on.
Starting point is 00:52:57 Tighten your dick hole. Look great from behind, baby. Michael's looking great from behind. He showed me about 600 times in the last two months after he's been working out with his new trainer. But the tightening of the abs does help like before you have the baby it does help prevent dialysis. I can't pronounce it. Right. Retire. Let's call it DR. Just splitting of the abs. Okay so what do you guys do now working together in tandem?
Starting point is 00:53:28 Tell us about what you're working on now. Ooh, together. We do mother-daughter workouts online on my website and on her website and social. We want to do more together. I think right now, during 2020 when I lived with her, we did so many workouts together. But now I live on my own. And so we want to do more stuff together. And now my focus is fitness over 50.
Starting point is 00:53:54 Because we are really in need of health now at this age. And I have a whole new magazine that comes out four times a year. It's quarterly. It's seasonal. This one is coming out. It's the spring issue. It comes out next week, and I'm really excited. It's 100 pages of Denise Austin. All my recipes, all my tips about staying healthy, menopausal tips to flatten your belly, how to rest better. This magazine sells really well. Oh, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:54:26 Yes, this is my second year now. And it's in every grocery store, every drugstore. I've seen you every single time I go to the grocery store. I've seen you everywhere. I feel like you're everywhere. Like still, that's such, that's so amazing that after all these years, the staying power that you've had, like, that's incredible. 40 years this year, I'm celebrating 40 years in the business and I love it.
Starting point is 00:54:50 And I have so much more energy now to do new things for women over 50. And it's more fun to work now because I've got my daughter, like, I gotta keep going, baby. How do you guys have so much energy? You guys have like the most energy that anyone that's ever come on the show. And I'm like, which water are you drinking? It's your water. Because people who meet me are like,
Starting point is 00:55:11 wow, you're so energetic. And I do have good energy. But then they meet my mom and they're like, what the hell? I actually seem very calm compared to my mom. It's wild. But you know, I think it's inspiring because this is the first time,
Starting point is 00:55:24 I think maybe this happens when you have children, right? You like start to think about, oh, shit, I need to kind of be here for a little while longer. And I, you know, you go through life like, oh, by the time I'm 40, I can slow down 50, maybe 60, I'll retire. But now I'm starting, I want to be here as long as possible with the most health and energy as possible, right? Absolutely. When you're young, you don't think about these things.
Starting point is 00:55:41 You just think it's always going to be here. Right. I notice it now. I'm like, okay, if I don't take it, you know, if I don't take care of myself, it's not going to be here. I think the audience would die if I didn't ask you both your workout routines. We have a baby on the way. And this is something I take very seriously. The sheets, the blankets, okay?
Starting point is 00:56:04 They got to be organic. They got to be soft. They got to be temperature regulating, very important, cool and comfortable. All of these things because I feel like we sleep so much and we're not paying attention enough to what we're sleeping on. We're breathing it in. And especially with a newborn, you want to make sure that you're really paying attention. So the ones that I have bought are cozier. They're softer than cotton. They're made from bamboo fabrics and they're temperature regulating. This was very important to me. And you can do a hundred night sleep test. So when I got everything I ordered, I was able to like even try it on myself. Like I laid something on my pillow to just breathe it in. Like I was able to like even try it on myself. Like I laid something on my pillow to just breathe it in.
Starting point is 00:56:45 Like I was able to try it on myself and just like lay the baby's blanket and I loved it, okay? I like wanna get one for myself. I got the bamboo blanket, okay? It's a baby blanket. It's on their site. It's breathable. And I am not surprised that Oprah said,
Starting point is 00:57:01 and she quotes this, the softest ever. So go on, especially if you have a baby and look up their bamboo blanket. This is also such a great gift. If you're going to a baby shower, they have all kinds of bedding. They have bamboo mattress pads, silk pillowcases. They have a baby collection, like I said. They also have bath. They have all different kinds of things on their site. It's a beautiful, airy site. They have provided an exclusive offer for all Skinny Confidential, him and her listeners today. It's 35% off site-wide. That is a wild, wild discount. 35% off site-wide when you use the code SKINNY, stock their baby collection, and maybe their silk pillowcases too. Oh, workout routine. Okay. So I actually only work out for 30 minutes a day.
Starting point is 00:57:49 I get kind of a little bit bored. So working out for 30 minutes, meaning I do a lot of like hit and 10 pound weights and not too heavy weights. I did that in college and used to max out lift. And I just enjoy my life better when I do 10 pounds or five pounds. So light weights for 30 minutes, a little bit of HIIT. And then I always do a 20 minute walk. So I guess in total 15 minutes of the day, but I usually do a 30 minute workout in the morning and then 20 minutes in the afternoon of a walk. And that's every day, six days a week. Okay. Okay. I walk every single day now. And this is how I meet up with my girlfriends, walk and talk and we catch up in life. Pass the multitask. I walk every single day now. And this is how I meet up with my girlfriends. Okay. Walk and talk.
Starting point is 00:58:25 And we catch up in life. Pass the multitask. Or with my sisters. I love it. Because I want to, you know, catch up with their lives. So then I come back into my house. We live by the beach. And I do a little yoga.
Starting point is 00:58:36 Every day I do a little something different because I believe in changing it up. So I'll do Katie Austin's app. I love her Sculpt. Thanks for the plug. No, Sculpt it. It's a new cardio Katie Austin's app. I love her sculpt. Thanks for the plug. No, sculpt it. It's a new cardio workout that she has. And it's 24 minutes. It's hard.
Starting point is 00:58:50 So I do that twice a week because it's hard. But the other days a week, I want a little easier. But because I'm hip 50 ever since I did, I make sure I do light weights three days a week. I want to keep my muscles toned. I don't want, if you're toned and taught, nothing will droop or sag. Because we have 640 muscles in the body. If we keep them firmed and toned, it stays close to your skin and you stay young. In every area.
Starting point is 00:59:15 Yes. You want to tighten in every area. You betcha, baby. It's good for the bones, too. Oh, it's great for the bones. I think that's what's kept me young all these years is a little bit of everything. A little cardio, a little toning, stretching, yoga. So mixing it up really helps.
Starting point is 00:59:30 When you guys go out together and you're like eating at a restaurant, do people come up to you? Yeah. You lately a lot. Thanks, Mom. I mean, you always, obviously. But yeah. And I show them what I'm eating too. Here's my hamburger.
Starting point is 00:59:44 You should just carry these around with you. No, I mean, I show the food. Oh, you show them what I'm eating too. I'll say, here's my hamburger. You should just carry these around with you. No, I mean, I show the food. You show them the food. Nachos. Yeah, I ordered nachos. Of course I did. I'm going to go get Greek yogurt after this conversation. I got my beer too.
Starting point is 00:59:56 Cheers. Yeah, the coolest part about my mom, when people meet her, they're always like, oh my gosh, you're literally just like you are in real life. That's an amazing compliment, especially in 2022. You never know what's happening. Do you know what being catfished means? Why do you keep calling it 2002? I know.
Starting point is 01:00:10 I mean, 2022. It's pregnancy brain. You're living 20 years in the past. I actually catch that. Pregnancy brain. 2022. It's real too,
Starting point is 01:00:17 so shut up. Yeah, it's real. I'm not catfishing the audience. If you guys were each to leave our audience with a really positive tip that you've each learned throughout your career, what would it be?
Starting point is 01:00:30 We'll start with Katie. Oh man, I would say be patient. Everything comes with time and kind of trust not to be super cliche, but trust the journey. I think I struggled a lot in my younger 20s. I just turned 28. And so my younger 20s,
Starting point is 01:00:44 I feel like everything was a rush. I wanted everything tomorrow. And so my younger 20s, I feel like I was, everything was a rush. I wanted everything tomorrow. And like you see social media stars, they blow up. Trust the journey. You're getting no for a reason. And no meeting has no meeting. So like sometimes like you think a project was a waste of time, a job was a waste of time. And I always wanted things so fast, but be patient and like just trust your instincts. Because if you believe in yourself, then everything will come to fruition and just be patient about it because longevity of your career is key.
Starting point is 01:01:09 Longevity? Yes! Nice little segue. I just out-youped you, by the way. I'm the perfect person to say that in front of anyone. I did it on purpose. I out-youped mom. Here we go.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Of course you did. Okay. I think it's just be yourself. Don't worry about what other people say about we go. Of course you do. Okay. I think it's just be yourself. Don't worry about what other people say about you. Just be who you are. And if it, you know, just be who you are. My mom always said, that's the dream about having your own life. You know, make it yourself, make it your own, do what you want to do and things will fall into place. I was just listening to Robert Green's podcast or something where he was on.
Starting point is 01:01:46 And he wrote 48 Laws of Power and Laws of Human Nature. And he said the same thing. He said, no matter what encounter that you're having, make sure you're being your own personality. Because that's what's memorable. I have to say, I'm always going to remember both of you. You guys are 100% yourself. It's so true, though. Because I love anyone who is remember both of you. You guys are 100% yourself. It's so true, though, because I love anyone who is so authentically themselves.
Starting point is 01:02:08 Even if, like, I actually met someone who was, like, very mean the other day, and I was like, no, but I still like her because she's authentically herself. She never puts out there that she's a very, very kind person. She's, like, exactly who she is. And so, honestly, I really, you know what I mean? You know, I like anyone who is being fully
Starting point is 01:02:25 themself and they don't let anyone else waver their personality. You know what? You would really like our producer, Taylor, who you met earlier the other day on Skype happy hour. We had a Skype happy hour. Can I come? You can totally come. Bring your red wine and your beer. He was on with about 30 women and we had to tell a fun fact about ourselves and Taylor was started talking about his baby toe for about 10 minutes straight. I don't know what the point of the story was still, but he talked about his baby toe for 20 minutes and Taylor, you really are yourself. So I think that was HR in this meeting. Yeah. HR was taking notes. I would love to do some kind of giveaway with you guys. Can we send your magazine like a signed copy in your app?
Starting point is 01:03:11 Absolutely, a year subscription we can do. Can we do like a couple people? What do you guys think? Oh, I could do five. Ten. Let's do ten. Ten, come on. Let's do it.
Starting point is 01:03:20 Don't worry, baby. We'll do ten signed copies of Denise's newest magazine. It's called Fit Over 50. You can give it to your mom out there if you're listening. No, I want to read it too. I mean, this is amazing. Yes. And then we'll do a giveaway with your app too simultaneously.
Starting point is 01:03:38 All you guys have to do is follow both of them on Instagram. Share your Instagram handles. Denise Austin. Katie Austin. Easy, easy. I like it. And tell us your favorite part of this episode on my latest post at Lauren Bostic.
Starting point is 01:03:50 I will. Yes. Oh, already I will. You're amazing. You guys are amazing. Michael's so cute, everybody. He is cute. Cute, cute. He's cute. He's really cute. He's a very, very good husband. I can tell. Who knows what could happen in those ufa days in a different

Yes, I went to your graduation. It must not have been memorable
Starting point is 01:04:32 because Denise wasn't there naked. I don't think I, no, I don't think I walked. She wasn't totally naked. Well, no, she wasn't naked. You know what though? She's looking, you guys got to Google this.
Starting point is 01:04:41 I'll put it on my Instagram story. She's not naked. She doesn't have her labia out like I'm going to have after I'm done giving birth. It's on my Instagram. Oh, it's on her Instagram. Yeah, one of the days. Okay, I'm going to post it on my stories too. She's not naked.
Starting point is 01:04:53 She's wearing a hot pink bikini. With heels. With heels. With heels. And the guys in the background look like they're about to ejaculate. I got approval by the president. Look at the dean. That's that dean. The dean's like, dean. The dean's like That's that dean.
Starting point is 01:05:05 The dean's like yeah. The dean's like Will Ferrell and Step Brothers. I'm laughing so hard. Lauren, you're hilarious. This guy's like
Starting point is 01:05:14 what is going on? I'm shocked. They've never seen anything like it. If you guys want to share any kind of code for your app anything you want to
Starting point is 01:05:23 share with our audience if not where can everyone find you? Tell us all the things. All right. At Katie Austin on everything. The Katie Austin app has all in-home workouts and has over 170 workout classes and a variety of different types of workout classes as well.
Starting point is 01:05:39 I have my own podcast called Austin AF. Season two is about to start. I have my own Snapchat show called Healthy Hacks with Katie, where I show you my favorite healthy recipes. And that's about it. And I'm at DeniseAustin.com, and I have subscription-based workouts for ladies over 50. And you can sign up for my newsletter.
Starting point is 01:05:58 It's very popular. That's free. And my magazine Fit Over 50. And I love my life. So keep that going. You got to all love your life. Where can I find your pregnancy DVD? Do I just find it on eBay?
Starting point is 01:06:10 Like, actually, where can I find it? I'm not joking. Oh, I don't think it's available anymore. I'm going to find it. It's really old. Ask Michael. I bet it's out there somewhere. I bet it's out there.
Starting point is 01:06:18 I mean, my oldest daughter's 30. But how do I get a VHS player? Can you convert it for me? Figure it out. That should be the answer. If you find it, I'll figure it out. You will? Yeah, I will.
Starting point is 01:06:27 Okay, that's a good husband. You guys are amazing. Come back on any time. I feel like there's so many different directions we could have taken this interview. And congratulations on both of all your success. It's so cute you guys work together. I hope Zaz is like, I want to be a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. You are, and a very successful one.
Starting point is 01:06:46 I know, but I want my daughter to do it too. No pressure, honey. I will just say also, sorry, one last thing. It was really cool because I've always wanted to be on the Skinny Confidential. I feel like I have really put it on my vision board. And I said for 2022, I gave like my top three things. And this was one of them. So thank you guys.
Starting point is 01:07:04 I really appreciate it. Thank you for coming on. You should also know it's available on Amazon, Target, and Barnes and Noble. We'll see you next time. One thing that Michael and I drink every single day and I've done through both pregnancies is bone broth. I was going to say the fountain of
Starting point is 01:07:39 youth, but yeah, bone broth. The bone broth though is incredible.
Starting point is 01:08:01 So they have this number one seller. It's called the Owl Reset, and it's an organic cleanse program. And this cleanse program is different than anything. I cannot wait to do it after this pregnancy. Basically, it's designed to heal the gut and restore balance. I've noticed if you look at all these cleanse programs, none of them are designed to heal the gut, which is wild. Owl Venice focuses on nutrient-dense, herb-infused broth elixirs and milkshakes that are packed with ingredients to regulate your digestion. So the whole cleanse is based on healing, and obviously you're going to look
Starting point is 01:08:35 tight and amazing, but it also reduces inflammation and draws out toxins. And exclusively for the Skinny Confidential listeners, Owl Venice is offering code SKINNY at checkout for 15% off. You're going to visit owlvenice.com for more information. Use code SKINNY and get the bone broth.
