Here is the move if you have kids or a hungry significant other, okay?
I got this acrylic holder in my fridge and I stack it with perfect bars,
specifically the dark chocolate chip peanut butter with the sea salt.
I stack the mini ones in my fridge. They come in like a snack size
and they're filled with protein.
I think they have like six grams of protein and 150 calories. And I'm telling you, Zaza will just
like open the fridge and get one. Michael gets them and they're non-GMO, they're gluten-free,
they're soy-free, they're kosher, and they're low GI. And they're such a great snack for Zaza
and Michael and me to feel like I'm getting a
little sweetness, but it also has so much protein in it.
If you want to get the bigger ones, you could do that too.
I love them in the fridge specifically.
The bigger ones have 17 grams of protein and come in like 10 different flavors.
In my opinion, the moves are the dark chocolate chip peanut butter, the coconut peanut butter,
and the salted caramel.
Those are the ones that I stock the fridge with.
I have the large.
I have the small.
Today, we went on a flight.
We took the small ones.
So easy to just grab.
There's like no chalky aftertaste, which we love.
And I just think this bar does such a good job.
It's made with freshly ground nut butter, organic honey, and 20 organic superfoods.
They have all different kinds of products on their site.
Perfect Bar knows it will be love at first bite,
so for a limited time, they're offering you a chance
to try their refrigerated protein bars for free.
So here's how it works.
You sign up for email or text and upload a picture of your receipt
from a local grocery store,
and they'll reimburse you for the cost of one bar
directly to your Venmo or PayPal account.
This is pretty cool, right?
All you have to do is go to perfectsnacks.com slash skinny to get a free perfect bar today. That's perfectsnacks.com

Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and
Michael Bostic are bringing you along
for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the Skinny Confidential, him and her.
Ah ha!
So we think we're doing all these great things. We're using all these actives. We're using all
these fancy products. But we're actually breaking down the skin barrier. And we're not actually
boosting what the skin does best for us, which is keep bad things out and good things in.
A lot of the issues that kind of we solved for is around user experience.
You know, there's been an awful user experience with humidifiers to date,
predominantly because they all get moldy.
As we went deeper down the rabbit hole of the development process,
we realized there was a lot of things we could solve for.
All right, all right, all right. We are mixing it up for the holidays. Today, we have Dr. Dendi.
She is back on the podcast. You guys loved her so much. She is absolutely incredible,
a board-certified, award-winning New York dermatologist. And then we decided to bring
on the founder of Canopy, Justin. And Dr. Dendy is on the board of Canopy.
So in this episode, Dr. Dendy gives all her secrets, her tips, her tricks when it comes
to fillers, skincare, how she glows, and even humidifiers. She's obsessed. And then we get
the whole spiel from Justin, who's a serial entrepreneur. I actually launched a humidifier
with Canopy a while ago, a pink one,
probably like a year ago and had such a good experience that I ended up launching a diffuser
with them. So I wanted him to come on the podcast, give context of who he is, why he started, why I
decided to partner with him. But also like I wanted to make sure that you guys got skin tips and tricks
from Dr. Dundee. So in this episode, it's kind of like a roundtable,
which I think you will love. We ask all different kinds of questions about protecting your skin from
bad air quality, your home environment, seasons affecting your skin, how you should be taking
care of your skin during the winter, all things humidifiers. And then we talk about how Justin
has built this incredible brand. I am personally such a fan of Canopy. That is why
I did the Skinny Confidential Humidifier and Diffuser with them. So this was like a no-brainer
for him to come on. And then to have Dr. Dendy back is so major. I hope you love this episode
and you are having the best holiday season. On that note, let's welcome Dr. Dendy, the star
New York dermatologist, and Justin Sidenfield to the show.
He's a serial entrepreneur that's launched multiple consumer products, and he is the
co-founder and co-CEO of Canopy. This is a beauty product company that's introduced the game of
changing the humidifier and waterless aroma diffuser market. On that note, let's welcome
Justin and Dr. Dendy to the Skinny Confidential Him and Her Show.
This is the Skinny Confidential Him and Her Show. This is the Skinny Confidential Him and Her.
Let's get some context here. Dr. Dendy has been on the podcast. Give us a quick intro of who you
are again, and we'll leave the episode number in the beginning of this, but give us another
little intro. I'm Dr. Dendy Engelman. I work in New York City at Schaefer Clinic on Fifth
Avenue, and I'm a board-certified dermatologist who works in the Taj Mahal of beauty. We have
seven floors on Fifth Avenue. We have five ORs and a whole two floors of lasers and a spa. It's
just a fantastic place to be, and I love what I do, and I love working with different companies
to help make the world of skincare and
beauty even better. How fitting is it that I'm wearing a chin strap with a dermatologist? I
thought you just put it on for me. I did not. I mean, this is great for lifting the face,
I feel like. Yeah. But it's perfect for the episode with you. You look snatched. Oh, thanks.
And Justin, let's get some context on you. You have not been on the podcast before,
but we've done a lot behind the scenes. Tell us who you are, where you're from, all the things. Yeah. I am Justin Seidenfeld. I am an entrepreneur with a background in product
development, consumer products. I founded Canopy, which is a beauty and wellness company with its
hero product being a bedside humidifier that we launched two years ago. That came out of another
company that I started called Doris Dev, which is a product development service business that helps all different types of
consumer product brands bring new products to market and then manage their supply chains on
an ongoing basis. Last 10 years plus working in consumer products across all the landscape.
I don't think I've asked you this, or maybe I did ask you in the early days of when we first
partnered together, but out of all the products that you saw running through DorisDev, and I'm sure you saw a lot with
companies that you were involved in and companies that you weren't involved in, you're just providing
services for like, what was it about creating a humidifier or this space that kind of caught your
eye and said, okay, like we got to double down and actually do our own thing here.
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the original genesis was we kind of saw a ton of pain points with humidifiers and it
was an overlooked category. And me being from the Northeast, I grew up with humidifiers as a kid
from when I was sick and everybody that you would talk about humidifiers with had a really weird or
bad or awful experience with mold or having to clean it out or whatever. And that was interesting
in and of itself when we started kind of digging into it. But what was really interesting was as we put
the idea, the concept in front of people, what resonated with folks was that people were using
humidifiers as this beauty hack for healthy skin. And nobody had really leaned in to kind of create a product focused on that area.
And what we realized was part of the problem was the awful experiences that everyone's
had with them.
And they get moldy and gross and everything like that.
Well, also, they're so ugly.
I had like 65 humidifiers by my bed because I knew about the beauty benefits before Canopy
had launched.
And they're such an eyesore.
They're so ugly.
You didn't want them out.
It was impossible to find a cute one. So how do you involve Dr. Dendi, the beauty expert,
in what you're doing? Why did you want to get involved in this?
When I'm seeing patients, not just from a beauty perspective, but from a skin health perspective,
whether they have psoriasis or eczema or just winter itch from the terrible tundra in which we live in New York City,
you know, that's uncomfortable skin. And we want to make sure that they are feeling better in the
skin in which they live. And so my questions always were, do you have a humidifier? Yes.
Do you use it? No. And so Justin and his team really solve for the reasons why. They're gross.
They make everything wet around you. They're a pain to use.
You have to get those Q-tips out,
this growing weird colored mold.
And we're also, when we have our babies,
what do you put on the registry?
A humidifier.
Because it's good for your baby's skin.
It's good for your adult skin.
But the reality is,
my husband and I used to fight over
who was going to clean the humidifier
because it was like a chore and a task and gross.
And then what are you spewing all over your baby's nursery? I love the overlap of
skin health and wellness and beauty because they all kind of work in tandem and the healthiest skin
happens to be the best looking. And so if you can use these subtle little tools that aren't chores,
they aren't having to come in and get your face fraxeled off by me, but just, you know,
fill up your humidifier at night and have a great night's sleep and wake up looking and feeling better.
That's a win-win.
Oh, you're somewhere that has so much pollution.
When I go to New York City, my skin is a wreck.
I told you off air, I look like a pig.
It's like that skin.
You know what I mean?
That thick.
Ratty.
Yeah, red.
Skin.
Ratty skin.
Probably in a lot of major cities.
What are some tips that you have when it comes to pollution for the skin? Because a lot of people
do live in cities. Yeah. So in more urban settings where it's highly trafficked, you're exactly right.
And we see that. I mean, there's like air quality indexes all over the world for all of the major
metropolitan cities. And they have real numbers as far as like the degree of pollution and what that looks like in skin health and honestly in
pulmonary health, like what we're breathing into our body. I mean, we have these initial layers
of defense, whether it's through your lungs or through your skin and pollution particles are
small. They're about 20 times smaller than the size of our pores. And if you want to think about
that as a metric and analogy, it's like throwing a nickel through
a basketball hoop.
So it's very easy that these pollution particles settle in the skin.
They cause inflammation.
And in reality, what that translates into is risk of hyperpigmentation.
People will have about 20% higher pigment in their skin if they live in highly trafficked
areas that are riddled with pollution.
And so we want to do things to help
protect that. There are daily sunscreens that you can use that also are formulated with a
pollution guard. And that really helps to kind of shield you from the settling of those
microparticles into the skin that can then wreak havoc and cause all kinds of free radical damage
and upregulate pigment and skin cancers and all kinds of things. So we do want to be mindful of
the environment in
which we're putting our skin, whether that's in our bedroom or outdoors. My son has a cold right
now and I just took my humidifier out of our room and I put it in his room. What are some things
that you're seeing that they help with during flu and cold season? There's a study through the CDC about having increased humidity
in your environment indoors because we know that the relative humidity drops during winter months
and the air gets drier. And we are truly more susceptible to viruses because when you're
aerosolized from breathing out, and that's how we get infected from these colds, if there's not a
lot of humidity in the air, it's easier to transmit through the air to the next person. So if there's more humidity, more water droplets in
the air actually binds some of these viral particles and makes them heavier and drops
them out of circulation. So we're less prone to breathe them in and less prone to get infected by
them. What are some problems that you're seeing people come to you with lately? A lot of the youth, like what are you seeing? I feel like the youth are
fantastic at jumping on bandwagons of trends, but that isn't necessarily always the best thing to do
for our skin. More is not always more. And all the actives that are out there that are in isolation,
good for the skin, may not be great altogether. You know, if we're doing AHAs and retinol and
doing all the exfoliating,
that can increase redness in the skin. It can destroy our natural skin barrier and it can
actually increase inflammation. And there's a whole concept in dermatology about chronic
inflammation actually accelerating signs of aging and it's called skinflammaging.
Who was talking? Somebody was just talking. Anyways, go on. It'll come to my mind as you're
talking. Somebody was just talking about that. Yeah. So we think we're doing all these
great things. We're using all these actives. We're using all these fancy products, but we're actually
breaking down the skin barrier and we're not actually boosting what the skin does best for us,
which is keep bad things out and good things in. And the skin is amazing at really keeping us as
healthy as we are. I mean, think about the fact that we come into contact
with so many infectious organisms every day,
but yet we walk around for the majority of the year pretty healthy.
And if you take that example to an extreme,
babies who are born without an intact epidermis,
that epidermal layer that protects you,
they typically die within weeks of overwhelming sepsis.
And that is so scary, but it just shows you how important that layer is in defense.
And so we also want to be in this nice homeostasis where we have like a healthy barrier that's keeping the bad things in, but it's also keeping the water, I mean, the bad things out and also
keeping the water in. And we have, as we sleep and throughout the day, something called trans-epidermal water loss, water loss through the skin. It's inherently
dehydrating when we sleep. If we get out of the shower and we don't have emollients on our skin,
we're losing water through the skin that way. Evaporation is dehydrating. And we have all
these water losses that occur throughout the day. So we really want to support the skin barrier
in order to help it to work as well as it does. Because a lot of
the things we do actually break that down and render the skin more susceptible versus making
it fortified. When people add a humidifier to their house, what are some things that you're
hearing from them, like actually from the clients? Firstly, hearing Dendi talk about it is actually
incredible because she's so knowledgeable and well-versed. I came into the problem thinking about the user experience,
all these people complaining about issues with mold,
safety concerns, the decor aesthetics to it,
but hearing the technical foundation for the benefits
of trans-epidermal water loss is really awesome to hear Dendi speak to.
But to your question, a lot of the issues that
kind of we solved for is around user experience. There's been an awful user experience with
humidifiers to date, predominantly because they all get moldy. Everybody has a story about how
mildew grew inside of their humidifier that they put into the closet during the off season. And
that was really the nugget
that we kind of initially started to solve for.
And as we went deeper down the rabbit hole
of the development process,
we realized there was a lot of things we could solve for
around safety concerns,
incorporating features around aroma diffusion
and making it just a holistically better experience,
making it design-led
so that it was something you were proud of
to be on your
nightstand and not something that you were hiding under your bed. So there were a ton of problems
that we addressed with the design and development of Canopy, all of which were really around user
experience. And then the added benefit is there is this scientific basis for healthy skin that
it's providing, that it's enabling. And so having something that is
utilitarian from the user experience perspective, but then also providing these
benefits for skin health is kind of the best of both worlds.
I have a random question maybe for both of you, but maybe mostly for you, Dr. Jenny.
If you are using a product like this in your bedroom and you're creating that ideal environment,
are there products that you could potentially either eliminate or use less of that you're
using to fix a problem that occurs from not having basically hydrated skin or the proper
hydration environment?
Yeah, that's a great point that I hadn't actually thought of until...
Meaning, you know what I mean?
Like people are trying to correct a lot of the things from, you know, skin corrosion
or whatever because they are not in these environments.
And I wonder if you were to swap these out, you could eliminate some of those.
For sure. I mean, I'll give you a personal anecdote that for years, only during wintertime,
I would get kind of dry scalp and you'll see the head and shoulders add or all these dandruff adds
for like winter itch and all this like flakiness that only occurred in the winter months, whereas
that dry building heat that you could not control for, and then the
drop in the outside humidity. And so it's allowed me to eliminate very strong topical steroids that
I used to use in order to eradicate that and medicated shampoos. And that is the case also
with my patients, you know, as you're just bringing this in. And, you know, we often don't think about
scalp as an extension of skin, but it really absolutely is. And so not only from a hair perspective, you know, your hair isn't as dry and it's healthier,
but the skin of the scalp is also affected. So it's very good at allowing to eliminate things
that, you know, chronic use of strong steroids over time can have side effects. And so that
personally has allowed for me to eliminate that. And then, you know, I've had patients who were really dry and always woke up and felt like their skin was red and chapped and
kind of cracked or uncomfortable. And in using canopy at night, they feel like their skin is
more hydrated. They don't have to use as much of their thick emollient night creams, which we all
know can be quite pricey over time. It's nice to be able to eliminate like that chore of waking up in the
morning and being like, now I'm all dry and have to start all over trying to add in. I've been
looking into Aquaphor lately because we were putting it on towns for diaper rash. And I just
like had this feeling that I needed to look into it. And I started researching. And what I found
is that the more you put that on, the more dry you get and it actually can cause eczema.
So I switched his Aquaphor. That's what you're talking about an emollient, right? An Aquaphor
is like an emollient. I switched his Aquaphor to like an all natural like non-GMO brand. I think
it's called like Maddy's, M-A-D-D-Y off Amazon. But I switched it and it's, I can already tell
his skin is not dry anymore.
So I think you're right about looking into the products that you're putting on your skin and
maybe they're supposed to be solving a problem, but they're actually making it worse.
Yeah, we solved two things there. We solved that for our son and then we eliminated a
potential sponsor for forever. I'm just kidding.
Maybe Maddie's.
Maddie's, shout out.
No, I think it is important.
You make a great point that in this world,
and we do it in medicine all the time.
Someone comes with a problem, you add a medicine.
Someone comes with a, you add,
and instead of sometimes editing and stepping back
and being like, what can we eliminate in this process?
Yeah, I think what we're probably big on,
maybe on the show and just in our personal lives,
is like prevention and what you can do
ahead of having to fix something later on. And whether that's in the health and fitness realm,
taking care of yourself or whatever it is, or the way you diet or something like this.
I always feel like people have the hardest time because they're trying to figure out how to solve
something after it's occurred. And I'm like, well, if you could just eliminate or delay what
will happen ahead of time, then you could probably... I mean, even if it's occurred. I'm like, well, if you could just eliminate or delay what will happen ahead of time,
then you could probably... I mean, even if it's an upfront investment, you save a lot down the line,
right? I agree. It's pay now or pay later, I find. And whether that's food, wellness, exercise,
Justin's... Both of his parents are physicians. My dad's a doctor. We come from this world of
the traditional American approach of wait till it's broken to fix it. And that is tragic. If we think of all
the healthcare dollars and painstaking efforts at the end of life that we could avoid if we had
prevented the problem in the first place. And not to mention all of the interactions of all these
drugs once we have all these disease states. So I agree, like in the concept of wellness,
like do the investment on the forefront and you'll prevent a lot of pain. Yeah. We all
just always think it's never going to be us or that we have a lot more time. Three things that
have changed my bedroom are my humidifier, getting a TV out of the room and five to eight frequencies
that has changed the bedroom. And the TV, by the way, is like such a game changer.
I think the bedrooms for sleep and sex, I hate having a TV in
the room. I think it's so unsexy and having that TV in our room is amazing. I got my humidifier
going. I have my five to eight Hertz and it's like, it's amazing. I would like to know if
someone's listening and they have, they see a product and they see a product as being an eyesore.
There's a lot of eyesore products. I could name some. I'll give you an example. I was looking at my son's funnel the other day.
He has a funnel for his bottle. I'm like, this funnel is so ugly. Why don't they have a cute
funnel? You did that with the humidifier. If someone sees a white space with a product
and they want to act on it, what are the steps to take? What steps did you take to act to get this out to the world? Yeah. I think the first part is really validating that there's a problem or
there's demand for something if you're going to create something from scratch.
And the reason for that is because there's so much energy and time and money that goes into
creating anything from scratch. So I always say the first step to any great idea
is just making sure that there's demand for it.
But assuming that you've found a ton of folks
that are dealing with this ugly funnel problem,
then the first step...
That might be a little niche of a problem.
Well, maybe, but if we go out...
It's a big product.
I don't understand what the funnel looks like.
I hate how the funnel looks.
I can't with the funnel. Yeah, Well, I mean, the first thing with
products is they're originally created to serve a purpose. And usually that purpose is utilitarian.
It's not aesthetics. So there's a ton of white space around focusing and aesthetics if that's
something that's really important for you. But with that in mind, if you want to create something
from scratch, the first thing to realize is that creating something from scratch takes a ton of time
and energy and money. And so you're jumping into a very deep pool. And it's not always obvious how
deep the pool is upfront, which is why it's important to make sure that you validate the
idea first. Once you validate the idea though, the first thing that you're going to want to do
with a custom product is design it.
So you're going to identify your problem
and you're going to then create a solution
that addresses the problem
with all of the features and factors and benefits
that you want to design into that product.
From there, you would essentially then engineer the product
so that you can manufacture it at scale
and you're going to want to go find a manufacturing partner that can go produce the product. All of that takes
time and energy. And if you're producing something totally custom, then you're going to be investing
into custom molds and tools to get something made at scale. Yeah, I keep falling back on just making
sure that you're really gung-ho and committed in that first step.

if I could recommend one thing that would be to really get your health in order for the last two
years, I have really decided to take health into my own hands to start changing the way that I look
that I feel the way that I operate. And one of the essential tools that I've been using relentlessly now for
the last two years is AG1, Athletic Greens. I've talked about it over and over on the show.
And listen, we talk about a lot of things, but if I could only prescribe one thing,
recommend one supplement to take, it would be Athletic Greens. And here's why.
You get in one scoop of this green powder, 75 high quality vitamins, minerals,
whole food source superfoods, probiotics, and adaptogens all in one scoop. So it really is
your one-stop shop to just get the most bang for your buck. And if you're someone like me
who struggles to get your greens in, you also get those as well. Here's how I do it. Every morning I
wake up, I have a huge 16 ounce glass of water that I use. I've dumped this stuff into it,
drink it first thing. We've had so many experts on the show. If you're an intermittent faster, it does not break the fast.
So it's really this easy kind of way to energize yourself, get the right vitamins, get your
prebiotic, get your probiotics right off the bat. And like I said, it's just this one-stop shop that
you can get everything in all at once. Athletic Greens has been a game changer in my routine. It
gives me energy. It gives me focus, makes my skin look better, makes my under eye bags go away,
gives me all the vitamins I need, like I said. And right now, it's time to reclaim
your health and arm your immune system with convenient daily nutrition. It's just one scoop

needs to exist, what are some of the things that
you need to have on your checklist to validate? Is it just a size thing or is it...
It's not necessarily a one-size-fits-all solution for that question. There's a lot of different
ways you can validate it. The most common though is just making sure that there's
kind of demand out there across a wide range of people or a big enough group that there's kind of demand out there across a wide range of people or a big enough group
that there's authentic demand that people will actually pay for the product.
So that can be anything from like surveying focus groups, asking friends and family for
feedback, but go beyond just the friends and family so you're getting real answers.
We've worked on product concepts where we actually put up like a landing page on a website
and we measure not only like the traffic we can generate coming to that landing page, but
actually how many people will open their wallets to enter credit card information to prove
that there's real demand before we invested any dollars into the design and tooling of
a new product.
You and I have a very similar story.
I wanted to shake up the ice roller space and
it took four years it takes a long time to actually when you said create something from
scratch and disrupt the category well people that maybe have never done this maybe also like
understanding distinguishing between like white labeling something that already exists compared
to like creating something from scratch and white labeling i feel like if anyone doesn't know what
that is it's just buying a product that's already made and putting your label on it. And a
lot of people do that. And that's fine. That is a lot of people's business plans. But I think
you and I are so aligned with... It's hard to innovate there, right?
A hundred percent. Well, then it's not yours, right? You've created a solution that is uniquely
yours, right? And it speaks to you and it speaks to the audience that you're building the product for,
which I think is, it's a worthwhile endeavor. I mean, I've made, I guess, my lifeblood on it,
but it's a worthwhile endeavor as long as you're kind of going after a true problem solution. Let me ask you another, I'm going to geek out here for a second, but out of all of these
different humidifiers that existed before, why did nobody in these big companies, and many of
them are owned by conglomerates, why did they not solve for the mold issue?
Yeah, I think that they've tried.
What's really interesting is,
this is going to be very specific for Canopy,
but the architecture for Canopy is
it's an evaporative humidifier,
which means that the way it's been built is
there's a paper wick inside the product
that gets replaced every six weeks.
That absorbs water.
We run a fan across it. And then the humidity is actually evaporating off of that paper wick.
That architecture was very specific and very specifically different from most humidifiers
in the market, which are ultrasonic humidifiers. And those are the ones where you see that kind
of chimney of mist coming up. Because people maybe think that it doesn't work if they don't
see that chimney of mist, right?
Right. And so we've leaned really heavily into telling that story of why there's no mist and
why it's actually better for you, right? It's removing impurities, metals, minerals from the
water, but you're not seeing it. So it's not as visceral. And actually the irony of that is that
was one of the reasons why we started exploring aromas in the first place to incorporate into the humidifier because it was this sensory or visceral kind of reaction or a cue to tell our users that the product is on.
I did it the first time they sent it to me.
I was like, it's not working.
They're like, oh, it is, but you don't see it.
And we were so trained to see that plume of steam coming out.
And that was like getting everything around on your bedside wet.
Now that you don't have it, you're like, oh, why did we ever think that was okay?
I love when people really solve for something that is novel.
Or it may be something that existed, but you make it better.
I think that's where the magic is.
You certainly aren't having just white label people here come talk about innovation.
Innovation, like if you can take something that is not attractive, if you can take something
then you can do it better.
I mean, that's really to me where the magic is, where someone already uses something on
a daily basis.
That's my brain's always thinking like, okay, what are people using in my category that
they're using every day and how can we make it prettier?
So what's next besides the funnel?
The funnel has got to go.
Can someone make – I would like the funnel in like a pale gray.
We're going to stop working on everything and just focus on funnels.
Honestly, though, the funnel, I ordered six different ones off Amazon.
I returned five of them.
They're so ugly.
One's plastic.
One's tin.
The tin one's loud.
The plastic one's BPA. That's why you don't like it. It's because it's loud because tin one's loud the plastic one's bpa like we gotta
like that's why you don't like it it's because it's loud because i get up in the morning and
i'm the worst thing i've ever heard what are you talking about how do you not notice that there we
go every single morning you need like just a little rubber thing to make it quieter i got a
rubber thing and it's ugly it's not big enough i'm just saying if someone's out there and they're
listening we would love like a pale nude, different kind of funnel.
If we don't stop talking about funnels, I'm going to quit the show for now.
We'll get the team to work.
I mean, yeah.
But it takes a while. So give us a couple of weeks to months.
Okay. How did you guys start working together? And why did you feel like you needed a beauty
expert to come on board with Canopy? I would love to know the behind the scenes about where
the synergy was with that.
For sure. I'll dive into this. So we started working on Canopy, my co-founder business partner
back in 2019. And we spent about a year kind of doing the R&D for the product. And through that
process, we realized what was resonating with people was actually, and this is one setback,
is the genesis of the idea came from his girlfriend who was using a humidifier
as this weekly ritual for her skin. And every Sunday would break out Q-tips and vinegar to
clean it out. So as a doted, devoted boyfriend, he started working on a humidifier that was easier
to maintain. So she didn't have to spend her Sunday afternoons cleaning out the humidifier.
And through that process, we ended up
designing and developing what ultimately became Canopy. But he and I are two guys in New York City,
not big in the beauty world. As we were putting the idea in front of people and telling about how
Izzy was using this as a beauty hack for her skin, that was like the biggest kind of factor that resonated with people. And it was this aha
moment to take the humidifier that we kind of re-engineered to be better and position it as a
beauty wellness tool for skin. But in order to do that, Lucas and I had no idea where to begin
within the beauty world. And so we kind of went down our Rolodex, reaching out to folks that we
knew were experts in the field.
We ultimately met our co-founder, Eric, who came from the beauty world.
He was an early employee of Birchbox and knew the ins and outs of everything within beauty from working in that field for over 12 years.
Through the course of that, we met also somebody who ended up becoming our publicist in the beauty world.
And she connected us with Dendi. And I think what
was really exciting was when we pitched Dendi about the product concept, obviously Dendi's
intimately familiar with like the science of a humidifier, but I think she recognized that there
was nobody who was leaning in to solve the problems, the pain points that we were solving.
And so got really excited about the opportunity to come
help us figure this out and validate a lot of the claims that we were leaning into.
And also Allie Webb is on board. She's been on the podcast twice and she loves Canopy. She's
on board with you guys too, which is so smart because she has Drybar.
Yeah. She's amazing. She also, another one, really excited about the product and the opportunity because she
knows beauty and saw that there was nobody thinking about it, solving this problem the
way that Canopy was.
That was actually a really fortuitous intro where we met to talk about product.
She was interested in working on a new product concept after she sold Drybar.
And all of the things that she wanted to solve for around launching a new product concept after she sold Drybar. And all of the things that she wanted to solve for
around launching a new product concept,
I was like, this is interesting.
Like everything you're pointing at,
we were doing with Canopy.
Like, have you heard of Canopy?
And she was like, no, what's that?
And then we went down this rabbit hole of, you know,
telling her about everything we were working on,
where we were going, how great everything was going.
And that conversation evolved into her getting involved and then us making a role for her to come on full time.
For our listeners, Dr. Dendy, where are the areas in the United States specifically where people
absolutely need a humidifier? You cannot fuck around. What are the top three areas? Well, I mean, regionally, I would say anywhere cold and dry.
So that kind of is a lot of the U.S., whether we're talking about up north or certainly out west.
I mean, L.A., even though it's warm, it's often dry.
And then I would definitely say in Arizona and that area.
And then I would say the northeast.
So it's more regional than just state specific.
That said, my son has eczema, which is so ironic that the dermatologist's son has eczema.
But I run it for him year round.
And it has been remarkable, the change in his skin and how I've had to pull back on
topical treatments, prescription treatments in order to help him. But even, you know, we spend our summers
out in Long Island and it's more humid there and, you know, warm and I still run it all year round.
So it doesn't have to be a seasonal thing that you just lean into, but certainly it can be if,
you know, some people are snowbirds and they go down to Florida and it's humid, you know,
there are different environments where it maybe isn't as necessary
as in many parts of the US. What are you seeing working for eczema? So many people have messaged
me about eczema. I don't have any advice other than the Aquaphor tip. But what are you seeing
as a dermatologist that works for eczema? I'm loving this cleanser. It's an oil cleanser
by Bioderma. Okay. I've heard of that. It's ATO Derm, like a topic,
but ATO Derm. And it's really emollient and it's great. I think that we have historically
over-cleansed the skin, especially in those who have eczema. And if you think about the extremities,
they have a lower density of sebaceous glands. So we don't need harsh detergents. You don't need
bar soap on your arms and legs. Certainly as an adult,
you don't. But in children, you don't need a bar soap anywhere because they don't even have
developed apocrine glands that give you body odor on your arms and things like that. So
just be very gentle with your cleanser. I think we are all overly cleansed in the US,
and that's destroying the microbiome or the good bacteria on the skin.
And then the trick that I love is the second that
they come out of the bath, I've got an oil on them before they're even dry. And then I towel
them off and then I put on a cream. And that really helps to lock in the moisture that has
been absorbed through the skin because drying is inherently dehydrating. If we're pulling off
moisture from the surface of the skin, it's also coming from the upper layers of the skin. You put on when they're all wet. All wet.
And you seal that in. And I tell even adults, like within 30 seconds of turning off the water,
if you are in the shower, like do some bio oil, do some, you know, in shower oily and then towel
off. And that really helps to lock that in. And I've found patients just doing that change. And,
you know, cause a lot of people get totally dry and then they step out and then it's like five minutes of
drying and that is dehydrating to the skin and can exacerbate itchy conditions.
Guess what was making my legs itchy for two years? Sorry, Michael, this is going to ruin
another sponsor. It rhymes with schmied. Laundry detergent was giving, like actually giving me
small patches of eczema on my legs.
And I stopped using it. Would you switch to branch basics? Okay. And I just use all natural
detergent and it's gone. And the craziest thing when I go to a hotel or when I put the other day,
I put on new pants, like someone sent me pants in the mail and I put them on and my legs had
the rash right back. So I don't know
if anyone's listening. If you get a rash on your legs, switch your detergent. Yeah. I think, you
know, oftentimes the harsh detergents can cause skin reactions and you are a sensitive little
flower. Even like with my face, I was thinking, oh my God, we're sitting here breathing this in
for nine hours. Like we have our humidifier going, we have all these healthy things, we're sitting here breathing this in for nine hours. We have our humidifier going,
we have all these healthy things that we're doing in the room, and then you're putting your
head on your silk pillowcase that you just washed with Tide. It just doesn't make any sense.
Yeah. I do think that we don't think about all of the things our skin comes into contact with
throughout the day and really what we're putting it through. So it is good to be mindful and really
back it down. What have we washed with? What is it made of? I love the silk pillowcase. That's my favorite.
I put them even on my children's pillows because my daughter's hair is really fine and it's a
rat's nest in the morning. You put them on everybody's pillows but mine. I don't know.
I know I just put them on mine. I don't put them on anyone else's pillows.
Yeah, what the fuck Lauren?
Yeah, who cares about his hair?
I put him on like the like...
That's all right.
You know what?
The humidifier is on my side of the bed.
So I'm getting...
I'm glowing over here.
What are some beauty tips that you do?
Because you have beautiful glowing skin.
And obviously, you're a dermatologist.
What are your three products that you cannot live without that you use all the time?
So I would say my non-negotiables as far as anti-aging for me
are in the morning, it's going to be a topical antioxidant. I like vitamin C. I like vitamin E.
I like ferulic acid. I think that that's really important to provide a safety net under the skin
for any of the free radical damage that maybe isn't filtered out. You use that? SkinCeuticals?
Oh, I do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Look at that.
Go ahead.
Wow.
Well, you're using all the technical terms.
So I just look at the label.
I'm like, I follow the routine.
I have a one, two, three.
You know, like I don't, you know, I didn't know all the terms, but yeah.
So topical antioxidant.
And I also like one from a company called Skin Better that has a good mix of them.
I use SPF.
Obviously, any dermatologist worth his or her salt would not
be a good one if we didn't say daily protection, day or night, rain or shine, January or July,
it needs to be on the skin because all kinds, and I prefer physical blockers like zinc oxide and
titanium dioxide because even if you're prone to melasma and all kinds of things can drive it, heat, infrared, blue light, even ambient lighting from indoors.
And only the physical blockers of SPF, not the chemical ones,
will protect you from that.
So that's another way to be preventative.
Speaking of preventing it before it occurs,
it's always easier to not get it before you have to correct it later.
And then at night, I use a retinol or a retinoid,
depending on, you know, what I'm testing at the time. But prescription retinoids,
obviously vitamin A derivatives, although tough to integrate into your routine, really are the
workhorse of anti-aging, where they help to build collagen, elastin, help with fine lines, wrinkles,
help with dyschromia, which is discoloration, even out skin tone, reverse sun damage. I mean, I grew up down
South where I used to be a sun goddess. And so I'm always mindful of the fact that we got to make
sure we're reversing some of the damage from years ago. A hundred percent agree. You know that.
And I was even like this chin strap helps me stay out of the sun. I'm reading Joan Collins book
right now. And she said that people don't realize that women that wear makeup are actually,
they're going to age a lot slower than women that don't.
Because when you're,
when you're not wearing makeup,
your skin is exposed to the sun every day.
So she was like saying,
she's like,
be as glam as possible,
put as much makeup on as possible.
So I'm all about staying out of the sun.
You know that.
If there's anything the last two years have proven to us, it's that we are some lazy people.
We do not want to go to stores anymore. We do not want to get in our car. We do not want to drive.
We want to do everything online. We're buying everything online, our food, our supplements,
our gifts, our essential items, pretty much everything. We're dating online. We're buying everything online, our food, our supplements, our gifts, our essential items,
pretty much everything. We're dating online. We're not even getting out of the house anymore.

slash skinny. That's BetterHelp.com. the end of last year when we had Sherveen, the founder on the show for the first time. And he's been on three times now in total, which is pretty up there, especially in the short period
of time since we've known him. And it's because he's fascinating. And the brand that he's built
is even more fascinating. Sorry, Sherveen. Symbiotica is one of the most powerful
supplement brands on the market. We take everything from their vitamin D3 and K2,
their CoQ10. I take their B12. I take their zinc. I take their magnesium. I take it pretty much all
regularly. I take their vitamin C. I think I am one of their best customers. But here's one of
the things that I want to talk about specifically today. Symbiotica's plant protein is not just an
ordinary plant-based protein. It is an essential. It's got all whole foods. One drink doubles the
health benefits. It's got 20 grams of protein. And the way I take it is typically I'm taking
whey proteins, but sometimes those are hard on the stomach. And if I just want to get a little bit of extra bang and I want a
little bit more protein, but whey's been too much, I'll add in this plant protein. I think it is the
best plant protein that I've come across on the market. And it's just a phenomenal product. So
outside of all their supplements and vitamins and minerals and all of the stuff that they do so
incredibly well, this plant protein is a game changer. Lauren and I are such huge fans of everything at Symbiotica. If you just listen to any of the
episodes that we've done with Chervene, you'll see why. And of course, we have an offer for you
today. Use code SKINNY at checkout for 15% off your first purchase. This is an addition to custom
bundle discounts. You can get 45% off. Create your custom bundles now at symbiotica.com and get 30% off. And be sure
to use code SKINNY. If you were to describe what you do at your dermatologist's office,
if someone were to come see you, is it filler? Is it Botox? Is it specifically like looking for
skin cancer? I know you talked about this on the first podcast, but how to check yourself, all that.
And I was telling Justin this earlier, it's kind of my practice has evolved as many do.
I used to do so much skin cancer and do two days straight of just skin cancer all day long and do
like 18 to 20 cases a day. And that was awesome. And I love that. And now that I have my babies at
home, that was a lot. And so it's evolved to more of an aesthetic practice,
but I kind of always bonus in the general derm
that is going to come along with that.
I don't really charge my patients for that,
but just kind of give them that as a benefit.
Like if you're in for Botox and filler,
when's the last time you got your skin checked?
Let's do that again today too.
And so-
When should you get your skin checked?
Like what, or is it just always? You know, it's a great question. And I would say that
before puberty, maybe you want to go see, have your child see a dermatologist once just to make
sure if there were, or if there's something specific to a new mole that you're concerned
about. I mean, my daughter has a birthmark that I, I tested cause I wanted to make sure she was
okay. Or to have one child with eczema, I can't have the other one with melanoma. You know, that would be terrible. So
I often see children and the children of my patients who just want peace of mind that their
children are fine. And then after puberty, we want to start doing it once a year, unless you have a
first degree relative or have had any personal history with skin cancer. And so then the general idea is once a year to get your skin checked.
And most people come in, you know, for a vast majority of things.
It could be acne.
It could be acne scarring.
It could be filler, Botox, lasers, talking about like, what should I do?
I'm turning 30 and this is the year of me.
I'm hearing that a lot.
Like this is the year of me.
I'm turning in, I'm leaning into my self-care and I don't know where to start. Every year is the year of me, Michael. Every year is
the year of me. It's a life of us. Our four husbands. But yeah, I think that I love helping
my patients love themselves better. And there's a major transformation in that. And it's really
a beautiful thing to watch when you do it in the right way and not overdone, but just helping them to light themselves better, whether that's having clearer skin,
having more glowing skin, having less wrinkles.
And so anything head to toe that is medical or non, it falls under my purview.
So it's really fun.
How can we check ourself at home?
So, you know, just like we recommend doing self breast exams for women, we need to do
self skin care, self breast exams for women, we need to do self skin exams.
And so once a month, you should obviously look at your skin.
And it's best when you're unclothed.
And then we need a mirror for certain parts or a partner to check out your back or your scalp.
I mean, there are areas that we cannot really look at by ourselves unless you're a contortionist.
And what exactly are you looking for?
Because as you age, obviously the skin changes a bit, but what things are, okay, that's a cause for concern.
Yes. So we always fall back to the ABCDEs of melanoma, which are A stands for asymmetry. So
a skin lesion that isn't perfectly symmetric, can't fold it on itself and it match up. B is
sharp borders. So if it's kind of jagged in the
edges, that may be a reason for concern. C is color, something that's multicolored, not uniform
in color. D is diameter, which doesn't always follow suit. We've certainly seen small skin
cancers, but it's usually about six millimeters, which is the eraser end of a pencil. And then E
is the most important that's evolving or changing so anything new changing growing
rapidly it does not I don't want to scare people that it's definitely skin cancer but it should be
checked oftentimes a lot of the younger patients won't have melanoma but they'll have basal cell
carcinomas which are skin sun related skin cancer is the most common and preventable and curable
type of skin cancer but they think it's an acne lesion that just doesn't heal and they've had it
for months and sometimes it bleeds. Those are things that you need to
get checked. And it's always just good to have a relationship with your dermatologist where you're
like, hey, this is new. I get pictures all day long on my phone, like, sorry for the side boob
pic this morning, but this is new. Are you worried? And then we talk about that. And
oftentimes, new lesions aren't skin cancer. Most commonly commonly they're not, but they do need to be checked in order to make sure because
we know that early detection leads to better prognosis.
I love you talking about this.
I think it's so important and I think there's so many people out there that are curious
to check and they don't kind of know what to do.
So that's very helpful.
Why did you guys decide, and this is like a plot twist question, to do a diffuser after a humidifier?
What was that transition like and how were you involved, Dr. Dendy, in the diffuser?
Yeah, I think that the diffuser came about because it really was a natural extension from feedback we were getting with the humidifier. I mentioned we incorporated the aroma diffusion feature
into the humidifier because there was no mist.
And so it was this cue that the humidifier was on
through smell.
And then in the first like six months
of Canopy being in market,
we were getting all of this amazing feedback
about how people loved the aromas
and they wanted to put the humidifier all
over their home, but it didn't make sense to necessarily put the humidifier in the entryway
hallway. And so we kind of dug into that further and we realized that with most traditional kind
of stone diffusers, the aroma diffusers also with the chimney of mist that have water inside and you
drip some oil in,
they have the same problems as humidifiers. They get moldy, they're spewing out gross stuff.
And so we dug into that and decided to design something that would not mold over so easily.
So we removed water completely from the diffuser and focused on just providing this amazing
aroma diffusion experience. I am a practitioner of diffusers.
I've tried every single one and they do mold. They're gross. Yes. And so when you guys came
to me and you wanted to launch a diffuser, we had already had the humidifier. That was a home run.
I was like, we need to launch this matching diffuser with it because I don't want mold.
No one wants mold in their house. That's gross. And why do you not need the water for this one?
It uses the same evaporative technology.
So there's a fan and it's essentially blowing scent.
And these are so cute.
They look just like the humidifier.
You guys have them in white too.
The one that I designed with you guys is in pink.
I'm so passionate about this project
because with the Skin confidential i'm always
about all five senses like i want someone to walk in the room and just i want the lights to be the
right dimmed michael never had had a dimmer growing up he just learned about it when he was 21 and
moved in with me it was very high cortisol yeah like it was just like these lights
interrogation like in this kitchen with these lights like the brightest of lights so we introduced
a dimmer to him
I got him on
diffusing
I got him on
you know
music
like I like the whole
five senses of the experience
TV out of the bedroom
sometimes I wonder
if like all the stuff
I learned on the show
has been good or bad
because before I would just
sleep, wake up
no thought into anything
just like go
last night I came into the room when you were
with Saza and I was like, oh my god,
I have destroyed my husband.
He has his red light going,
he has the music on,
there's chimes,
the humidifier, the diffuser,
he has all these things going on.
It's cute. I've trained you, I feel like, really well.
I mean, it's like one of those,
ignorance is bliss in some ways before
I just didn't
I mean when I
was a kid
I'm not joking
my dad would
walk in
swing the door
wide open
slam the lights
on brightens it
get out of bed
I'm like oh
okay now it's
like a whole thing
right
yeah now he has
he has
I mean the dimmer
thing was out of
control
you really didn't
know
I get the
humidifier going
yeah
ambiance is
important
it's so important.
And it's important in an office space.
It's important in a bathroom.
It's important in a house.
It's an energy that you're walking into.
And I think that the diffuser really represents that.
And that's why I wanted to launch it with you guys.
I would just love to know if there's a certain way that you guys pick your scents for your
diffuser.
And I would love to tell the
audience about how we picked mine too. Yeah. I'm excited to hear you talk about the three scents.
But for us, when we launched Canopy, we didn't think of Canopy initially as developing our own
scents. So we were partnering with brands and we partnered with all different types of brands.
In the first year, we partnered with Open Spaces, which is a home organization brand, to develop a scent with them. We did the same
thing with Vasil and Prose and a couple other brands. And so we were really, in the first year,
kind of trying to figure it out and leaning on other folks that were experts or had existing
kind of scent-based product and audiences that liked what they were making. But we learned a ton from that. And so now what we're doing is really pulling from
feedback that we're seeing from our customers as to what they like, what is effective for different
times of the day and things like that, and then leaning in into creating specific
scent profiles that kind of meet those needs. When I created my scents with you guys for the humidifier,
you sent me so many different ones to try.
And we finally settled on pink taffy, palm berry, and grapefruit spritz.
And you guys all love those if you're listening and you have one.
And then for the diffuser, I was even more annoying.
I had you guys send me tons because I wanted to make sure the scent was
human safe, pet safe, all the things.
And so what we did is we decided to take you throughout your day.
So we were envisioning when you woke up, when you were working and when you were going to sleep.
And so I wanted you to wake up with something that sort of gave your senses a little tickle.
And that was hot girl morning and it's juicy spritz.
So it's like it's like kind of
like tangerine grapefruit smells delicious. So that's going to wake you up. And then when you
are working or you're doing your thing, maybe you're taking care of the kids, whatever you're
doing, it's mommy needs a minute. And this is vanilla honeysuckle. This is one of my favorites.
It smells so good. It's so good. And everyone loves vanilla. Vanilla is just like a scent
that everyone loves. And then I wanted to wind you down too. And that's what Michael was putting
on in the room last night when you went to bed and that's called get the fuck to bed. And it's
an incense smell. It's going to be subtle. It's going to give you the chill, calm vibes. And that
was really important to me to have it take you through your routine throughout your day.
I am obsessed with my diffuser.
It's pink.
It looks just like the humidifier.
If pink is not your aesthetic at your house, no worries.
You guys have a white one.
I would definitely check out Canopy.
We wanted to have both of you guys on
because we wanted to have the creator
and tell the behind the scenes story
and then hear about the beauty benefits.
That was important to me to get two opinions.
Can we do a giveaway? Let's do it.
Okay. Can they win a humidifier and
a diffuser? So we actually
I don't know if you
got wind of this yesterday, but we
sold out. You helped sell
out the humidifier over
the Black Friday, Cyber Monday
period. I sold
out of ours or out of the
canopy one? No, no, no.
Your humidifier.
We're sold out, you guys.
But do we have one in the office?
We have one in the office.
Yeah, but we can always do a non-TSC humidifier. Okay, let's do a non-TSC humidifier, but a TSC diffuser.
Yes.
Okay.
All you have to do to win is follow at Get Canopy on Instagram.
And then you have to tell us your takeaway from this episode.
We would love to know.
I feel like this episode was like a business side and a beauty side.
So I don't pick your poison on what you want to say.
But tell me on my latest Instagram at Lauren Bostic.
And then we have to follow you, Dr. Dendy.
What's your Instagram?
It's at Dr. Dendy, which is D-R-D-E-N-D-Y.
And if someone wants to come book with you and get their skin checked, how can they do that?
You can message me on Instagram or you can call the office.
Okay.
Or just go to my Instagram and there's a little call button.
And that's probably easiest.
But I wanted to just say, I think it's so fun because when we first met,
it was November of 2020.
Crazy.
Mid-pandemic.
Flew to LA.
And you were talking to them about making this and here is your baby. It was November of 2020. Crazy. Like mid-pandemic. Flew to LA. Yep.
And you were talking to them about making this.
And here is your baby.
And I'm seeing it, you know, in person.
And it's so fun.
And we have never met in person until today.
Oh, wow.
I mean, I forgot that we had met.
I've seen him so much on Zoom.
And he was like, nice to meet you in person.
And I was like, oh my gosh, you're right.
Like we had never even physically seen each other.
Isn't that funny?
That is wild.
If you didn't have a humidifier in your house during that pandemic you were really missing out your skin was really struggling then no i mean it was when they approached me to do this it was like
i wanted every step of the way the audience to love it from the packaging to like the letter
that comes from me i designed everything everything with the Canopy team.
I was so hands-on and they were so great. And this experience has been unbelievable. And this is a product that I a hundred percent believe in. It's in my home. It's in my daughter's room.
It's in my bathroom. It's in my office. It's in the studio. Like I just love it so much. I can't
shut the fuck up about it. Well, I'm the same. I mean, we were talking about beauty tools either
earlier and I was like, here's the thing with beauty tools and I have all of them. It's whether or not you use them.
Do you have an ice roller? A skinny confidential ice roller?
I don't have one of yours.
I'm getting you one.
But that's maybe why I don't use it.
Yeah, I'm going to get you the skinny confidential ice roller.
But this is what I use. And I always think, you know, when patients come to me, I'm like,
talk to me about what I do and what I use because that's the key. That's what you want. Just like
when I talk to beauty editors, I'm like, what's in your medicine cabinet? I want to know what you would buy
if you had to spend money on these products because that really tells you what works.
When you talk to the experts about what they actually do, there's the key.
Well, we did that today. Where can everyone find both of you and can we do a code
for the audience?
Yeah, for me, probably through Canopy at Get Canopy on Instagram.
And I'm at dr dindy and use code
skinny to shop get canopy.co go stock the pink humidifier and pink diffuser and if you're not
into pink they have other colors thank you guys for coming on thank you both thank you both so much
wait don't go make sure you check out getopy.co and use code skinny. If you grab
the diffuser, it's pink, it's cute, and it's going to make your house and your office smell
so good. I am obsessed. The three scents I took so long to pick like the aromas.
It was so important for me for you guys to love them. On that note, if you want to win a diffuser,
we're giving one away. All you have to do is follow at Get Canopy Co.
and the Skinny Confidential and leave your favorite part of this episode on my latest post at Lauren Bostic.
I hope you guys have the best holiday ever, and we'll see you next time.
Cheers.
Here is the move if you have kids or a hungry significant other, okay?
I got this acrylic holder in my fridge and I stack it with perfect bars,
specifically the dark chocolate chip peanut butter with the sea salt.
I stack the mini ones in my fridge.
They come in like a snack size and they're filled with protein.
I think they have like six grams of protein and 150 calories.
And I'm telling you, Zaza will just like open the fridge and get one. Michael gets them and they're non-GMO, they're gluten-free, they're soy-free, they're kosher, and they're low GI.
And they're such a great snack for Zaza and Michael and me to feel like I'm getting
a little sweetness, but it also has so much protein in it.
Perfect Bar knows it will be love at first bite. So for a limited time, they're offering you a chance to try their
refrigerated protein bars for free. So here's how it works. You sign up for email or text and
upload a picture of your receipt from a local grocery store and they'll reimburse you for the
cost of one bar directly to your Venmo or PayPal account. This is pretty cool, right? All you have
