Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a Dear Media production. You know what's just like fresh, refreshing, delicious, perfect? Smart water. Okay? I love a smart water. First of all, the bottle, it's just so good. It fits in your handbag, your backpack. I put mine in my purse sometimes. It's just beautiful. But also, it's alkaline. Smart water alkaline will keep you hydrated throughout your active life, whether you're running miles or running meetings. In a world filled with overthinking, smart water is providing a refreshing change of pace, a moment of clarity with a simple choice of hydrating with smart water. And for me, when I get a water bottle, I look for something with
Starting point is 00:00:40 added electrolytes. It just gives it like a pure, crisp, delicious taste. And I also like how Smart Water has 9.5 plus pH and added antioxidants. This is a water that I always grab on the go for my kids too. Michael loves it. It's just a great water all around and I enjoy the taste. I'm a big water connoisseur, and I feel like the taste of smart water is superior. It's delicious. So whether I'm going to the gym or I'm traveling or I'm running around in the car, carrying a smart water is the move. If you want something that slides right into your handbag, is pretty aesthetically pleasing, but also tastes delicious and has electrolytes, check out Smartwater.

Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the Skinny Confidential, him and her. Aha. Solo episode today with yours truly kicked Michael off again. I was actually working out this morning and I thought I need to do a show about the ways that I have transformed my life since moving to Austin. Because the Lauren who was living in LA compared to the Lauren who is living in Austin is a completely different person.
Starting point is 00:02:21 And I thought that maybe some of these things that I've done to change my life would inspire some of you. Maybe some of you are in a job that you're just not loving or maybe you just want to replace a negative routine with something positive. I hope that this episode gives you a little bit of motivation. On that note, let's get right to it. So obviously, Michael and I decided a couple years ago during the pandemic to make the move from West Hollywood in Los Angeles to Austin, Texas. And essentially, the reason that we decided to do that was because we wanted to create a sanctuary. We wanted a place that had no distraction. And I would say that yes,
Starting point is 00:03:06 the pandemic was going on and there was like this crazy energy and it just like stopped serving me especially. And I came to him and I was like, I want more open space. I want fresh air. I want to I want to create a house that's more spa-like. And he surprisingly totally was on the same vibe as me. So we decided to choose Austin, Texas because it was like checking all the boxes that we wanted. And we sort of just made the move very quickly. And in making that move, I wanted to eliminate distraction. That was like number one for me. And I think that this is like a good place to start. If you are in an environment that has constant distraction, I believe that it's taking away from the bigger goal. So for me,
Starting point is 00:03:59 my big goals are to really show up as a amazing mother, to show up as a wife, and to build a massive business and product line and show. And anything that falls out of those categories was distracting. So I think, you know, as you gain any kind of success, there's going to be more opportunities. And some of those opportunities, as amazing as they are, can actually take you away from doing what you're supposed to be doing and they can actually get you out of alignment. So I think for me in LA, there was so much fun opportunities and there were so many parties and so many networking events and all these different things that it was ultimately taking me out of alignment to what I needed to be focused on. So the first change that I made when I moved to LA is I completely just really cut back on
Starting point is 00:04:53 alcohol. We were going out a lot in LA to events or to dinner, and there was a lot of socialization. And I think with that comes margaritas and wine. And so moving to Austin immediately sort of ripped that bandaid off where we weren't out all the time. We started to go to bed and get ready for bed at 730 or 8, which was really different. We're in LA. We had this big screen television in our bedroom and we were watching TV, watching our iPads on our phone until like 10 p.m. So immediately we decided no TV in the
Starting point is 00:05:26 bedroom. The bedrooms for fucking and sleeping. I do not want a television here. Took the television out of the room. We created like a no phone zone in our bedroom and just really made sure that the energy in our bedroom was like calm, serene, peaceful, and decided to start getting into bed and getting ready at 8 p.m. And that really cut alcohol out. I didn't obviously eliminate everything. I love going out for a glass of red wine, a Brunello, a steak dinner. But the dinner is like at 530 now and we're getting in bed by eight. So it's just a really different lifestyle. So just that really set a different tone. There was no more late nights. There was no more staring at different tone. There was no more late nights.
Starting point is 00:06:06 There was no more staring at a screen. There was no more phone in the bedroom. My phone now is on airplane mode at 730 outside my room. I don't even look at it. There's no iPad. There's no television. There's no screen time. Instead, I'm doing a Kindle to wind down on dark mode. The next thing that we did in Austin that was really different from LA is I took a really hard look at the workouts that I was doing. In LA, Pilates was very hot at the time and I love Pilates. I still do classical Pilates, but I was doing primarily only Pilates. So I decided to sort of throw a match in that and burn it and try weightlifting. And this is probably three years ago. So what I did to find my trainer is I searched a hashtag Austin trainer and up came
Starting point is 00:06:53 Brent. And I connected with Brent over the phone, fell in love with him, thought he was just the perfect energy. He works out in a gym that's kind of like an indoor outdoor. So you get the sunlight in your eyes in the morning, which is amazing. And I found someone who I wanted to work with as a partner in my fitness journey, meaning I didn't find a trainer and say, I need to get in shape in three months. I found someone who wanted to make a commitment to me and I wanted to make a commitment to him for the long haul. So I essentially looked at my weight loss journey after having a baby as a marathon, like it's not a sprint. So what I did is I started booking sessions with him four to five days a week. And then the days that I was off, I would commit to walking or classical Pilates or moving like with the Melissa Wood Health or
Starting point is 00:07:46 P-Volv or in some kind of way. I committed to moving my body every single day. And just making that commitment to myself and having him hold me accountable was a huge change. And I'm not saying you have to go find a trainer, but finding someone to hold you accountable, whether it's a friend or your partner who you're married to, or a sister or a brother is a really important shift. But it's not just someone who you're accountable to for like a week, it needs to be someone who you can rely on to sort of motivate you when you're not feeling it, or to just have someone in your calendar that you can meet up and do a walk with. Or if you can get a trainer, that's a really nice way to just have someone in your calendar that you can meet up and do a walk with. Or if you can get a trainer, that's a really nice way to just show up and have them sort of tell you what to do.
Starting point is 00:08:39 So switching from just Pilates to a lot of weightlifting with adding Pilates too was absolutely life-changing for me. It's been life-changing for my cortisol. My body composition has changed, which has really been awesome. But it's a long-term journey. And it's something that has become a hobby for me, which I don't think I had that hobby, obviously, in LA. And so it's been something that takes up my time, which is really awesome because it's a positive way to use time. And what I've noticed, like the biggest difference from moving from LA to Austin is ultimately is it was replacing a lot of not so great habits with positive habits. And what I did was I just took on a lot of positive habits that we're going to get to, to crowd out the negative. So if I knew I had to work out with Brent in the morning, I wasn't obviously going to
Starting point is 00:09:25 go out for margaritas the night before. I was going to be in bed by eight ready for that. Another thing that has replaced a lot of distracting habits for me is cold plunge sauna. And I obviously know that not everyone can go get a cold plunge sauna. But I was doing sort of cold plunge in quotes since I was 21. And what I was doing is I was taking freezing cold three-minute showers. So there are ways to get cold therapy done. I remember also when I was like 25 going to those cryo booths where you would like get that cold therapy. I have a lot of friends here in Austin who go to Kuya or the collective gym and they use the sauna there. There are a lot of ways to implement sauna and cold or just cold therapy into your life in a really quick way. And I have noticed so many positive benefits from doing this.
Starting point is 00:10:21 I probably do it four to five times a week. Sometimes I even do seven if I'm jet lagged or I'm tired or I'm just having a week that is a week. But the cold plunge and sauna has absolutely transformed my life. And what's been cool about it is, like I said, it's crowded out so many habits that just weren't productive. So whether that was wasting time or scrolling social media or drinking margaritas, it's like eliminated that, which has been awesome. And so I think if you're looking for one habit to just take on tomorrow that isn't so overwhelming, implementing cold therapy, whether it's a cold shower, cryotherapy, or the cold plunge is absolutely life-changing. And the way I would look at it if you're scared of cold is
Starting point is 00:11:09 cold plunging and cold water is actually not a physical thing. If you really look at it, it's mental. And what I think every time I get in the cold is I'm working on my mental toughness muscle. That's why I'm in there. I'm building that mental toughness and that resilience and I'm making myself uncomfortable in a good way. I think we're so used to having so many things that are so comfortable and so easy. We have air conditioning, we have Uber, we have Postmates, we have all these things that we sometimes forget that it's really healthy to get uncomfortable. So for me, when I cold plunge in the morning, I did three minutes this morning,
Starting point is 00:11:50 I know that's probably going to be one of the toughest moments of my day. And it really sets the tone and the perception of the rest of the day. So I don't know if there's any way that any of you guys can just tweak your shower to just being one minute, two minutes, three minutes freezing cold in the morning. But just doing that is going to really kickstart your day. It's going to give you energy. It's going to build that mental toughness muscle. And it's also if you're drinking margaritas at night, you're not going to want to do that in the morning. So what it's going to do is you're going to say, you know what, I don't need that margarita because I'm going to get my ass into the cold tomorrow morning. Another thing that we did when we moved to Austin is we really took
Starting point is 00:12:33 audit of who was in our life. So this is, I think, inventory that everyone should do every couple of years. We looked at who we really wanted to invest in and who maybe wasn't working in this season, in this chapter. And it's not like we went and cut off a bunch of people. We just instead invested our energy into the people that we really wanted to spend time with. I think you just want to be thoughtful about who your friends are because it's so true that the people that you spend time with, you become. So we really just took an inventory of our friends. And on that, when I moved to Austin, I also took an inventory of the content that I was consuming. You are consuming Instagram stories every single day, probably. You have to look at all those minutes and how they add up throughout
Starting point is 00:13:23 the year. If you're consuming content that doesn't make you feel good, or maybe it's toxic, or it's too much news every single day, even if it's a minute a day, it's going to affect you overall. So what I did that was incredibly helpful is I muted a bunch of stories so I don't even look at stories anymore. And then I starred the people that I really wanted to see. So I starred accounts like Louise Hay Affirmations. I starred accounts like Dr. Joe Dispenza. I starred accounts like Robert Greene or authors I really liked or just thought leaders who were inspiring me. And so now when I log on, all I see is those starred posts, which are really positive. And it's told my algorithm and my feed that that's the energy that I want for my social media. I really try to create boundary around social media. And I think moving to Austin also helped sort of nail that point in, meaning I created bookends of my day. I try not to be on my phone until probably nine or 10 o'clock in the morning. So I really am off my phone until that time. I'm either with my kids or walking or reading or
Starting point is 00:14:33 meditating or working out a cool plunge sauna, doing things that are productive. And then at the end of the day, like I said, 7.30 PM, my phone goes on airplane mode in the other room, or I'm like using it to do a meditation. I think having those boundaries that are really purposeful around your phone is really important. And again, it's going back to the point in the beginning, which is eliminating distraction, which is what I am all about for the next hundred years of my life. I want to eliminate unnecessary distraction. And whether that's curating my content that I'm consuming, or being thoughtful about who I spend my time with,
Starting point is 00:15:11 or auditing my calendar, or making my day really productive in the morning and the night so I can be the most efficient during the meat of the hours that I'm in the office. I am just committed to getting rid of distraction. And when I thought about it this morning and I thought I should do an episode on how I changed my life, that was the main theme that came to mind was it's like taking away all the noise and almost getting centered and back in alignment and having clarity to hear myself think. I think that's what Austin has ultimately given us. So if you're wanting to move or you can't move, but you're wanting to change your life, I think the first thing I would say is really auditing everything you're doing from the content to the friends you're hanging out with to what you're doing on a daily basis and what your daily habits are is really productive. Other things that I've done that have absolutely
Starting point is 00:16:09 changed my life that are little things like that I've added up since moving to Austin are first things first, getting my light movement and hydration in. That's been a game changer. Lots of meditation, a lot of of alone time really carving out the alone time on the calendar becoming a practitioner of my calendar so looking at each day through a lens of am I being productive and effective and then really zoning in on what I want to focus on and that's like a little task that you guys could take away from this episode is what are the three things that you want to focus on and then audit your day for a week and see how much you're actually focusing on them. I just got a great tip from Amber Vance of LTK on her podcast. She said that she color codes her calendar, which I love to do too. And she said she
Starting point is 00:17:02 actually looks at how much of her calendar is spent where. So for me, I make my workouts in yellow. I make my walks in yellow so I can see how much I'm working out. I also put like my kid time in pink so I can see where, how much time I'm spending with my kids. And then like my calls are in blue and you can really audit and when you look from a sort of like landscape view at your calendar of what you're doing over the month, you can really audit where you spend your time. And I think there's like this quote that says, you show me where someone spends their time and their daily habits, and I'll tell you how their life's going to go.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And it's so true. And that's what we did ultimately when we moved to Austin is we drastically changed our daily habits and eliminated distraction. I hope that this episode has inspired you in some kind of way. I would love to know what you guys want to hear on my solo episodes. I'm super passionate this year about doing episodes with me and Michael or just me. So tell me what you want to hear on my latest post at Lauren Bostic. And just a heads up, the caffeinated SPF is on pre-order. I highly recommend pre-ordering it or do what I did and get on subscription because if you're on subscription, you don't have to worry about it selling out anymore. You can go to shopskinnyconfidential.com.
Starting point is 00:18:22 It's the best sunscreen. I used it my entire trip to Italy and France as literally my makeup. It's like a nice little tint. It tightens the skin. The caffeine is so good for the skin. And it's a mineral-based sunscreen. It's beautiful. And it lays so nice. And if you do want to apply makeup on top of it, it does not pile. So go to shopskinnyconfidential.com, pre-order it if you didn't get it when it's sold out. And on that note, I will see you guys on Monday with such a fun episode.
