Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a Dear Media production. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you along for the ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to The Skinny Confidential, him and her.
Starting point is 00:00:21 Aha! I used to battle my weight more in my 20s when I didn't have good alignment and great breathing. Since having kids, there's this myth that your body is hard to look after, but since my breathing is better, like you, I feel as though I don't battle my weight anymore. I don't need to think about it. As long as I'm eating the right foods and occasionally getting exercise and not sitting around, things are all working just fine. I don't have to stress about weight gain. Here's a fun fact about me. I am obsessed with healthy facial structure. I had double jaw surgery when I was 25 years old. And since then, I just am very into the whole idea of how to make your face as healthy as possible. And you guys know if you follow me on social media that I'm always doing facial massage,
Starting point is 00:01:22 facial manipulation, ice rolling. I love fascia massage. It's something that I'm always doing facial massage, facial manipulation, ice rolling. I love fascia massage. It's something that I probably spend 15 minutes on every single morning. I like to work out my face. I also do a lot of things to support my facial structure. Because of the surgery that I had, I want to make sure that I'm just doing everything I can do to be the best version. And one thing that I do every single night is mouth tape. I tape my mouth shut, which encourages nasal breathing, which is really good for the facial structure. If you think about it, when you're sleeping every single night
Starting point is 00:01:57 and your mouth is hanging open, gravity is affecting the face. So if you can close your mouth with mouth tape, you're supporting your facial structure and your tongue posture, which makes your jawline stronger. And I've learned all of this through books like Jaws, Shut Your Mouth, Save Your Life, which was written in the 1920s, and even the book Breathe by James Nestor. I've done a lot of research on this topic. I think it's just I'm interested in it because like I said I had that surgery And I want
Starting point is 00:02:28 My kids to do everything that they can do to have a healthy jaw chin face structure in the future And as I've become more and more interested in this topic and after launching mouth tape a lot of Posts online and on Instagram have started popping up. Let me give you a backstory. So I found this super interesting woman on Instagram. Her name's Katrina Faye. Basically, she takes anthropology, orthodontics, and oral facial mythology and mixes it together. And she talks all about how facial structure is so important when it comes to combating chronic ailments and even things like ADHD, which we'll get into. In this episode, we talk about airway dynamics, sleep science, and facial development.
Starting point is 00:03:18 This show is one that every single person that has a face needs to listen to. It's so important. My mind was blown. I have to tell you, my mind was blown. I was taking notes. It's such a wild episode. She's the author of Beauty is Bone Deep, Learn How We Grow a Beautiful Face. And it goes into every little detail about your mouth, tongue, jaw, and nose. I think this episode's going to rock your world. Everyone needs to hear it. Send it to everyone in your family. On that note, let's welcome Katrina Faye. She has a podcast called Nurturing Healthy Faces and an Instagram account called Nurturing Healthy Faces. Katrina Faye, welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:04:02 This is The Skinny Confidential, him and her. What do you wish everyone who was listening knew about the human jaw? I wish they knew that the human jaw was not just like a jawline problem and something to do with the teeth because we are experiencing a jaw epidemic and the jaws are literally our face. It starts here, it's the midface and it's the whole bottom dentition and the lower jaw, the mandible. And if it doesn't grow properly, particularly the midface, it will affect the shape, the angle, how dominant the forehead is, where the mandible sits, whether it's jutting ahead, whether it's tucked in and like melting into the neck. So I wish people knew that
Starting point is 00:04:51 if you're having TMJ problems, that's very common now. If you're having problems breathing through the nose, very common now. And it's a growth limitation. It's not that your genetics are flawed. We're all born with genetics that are meant to function well, but with a modern lifestyle, we're having this jaw epidemic where we're just not growing like we used to. And it's been a couple of hundred years, particularly now where things are getting worse with each generation. Take us back to the very beginning of when a baby is born, where it starts. So a few things have changed in infant rearing. If you don't check for a tongue tie at birth,
Starting point is 00:05:32 which mothers used to get the signal that there is a tongue restriction, which means the frenum beneath the tongue is too tight, that breastfeeding is painful and they clamp onto the nipple and they don't cushion it with the tongue. And if you're breastfeeding, you think, oh, that's not comfortable. And women would have the knowledge we need to check the tongue. But now if it's not working, women will go to the bottle and then the tongue tie may persist unnoticed. And because the tongue is the architect of the mouth, if its mobility doesn't allow it to suction against the mouth roof, guide the top jaw forward and develop it with that internal support and pressure, the jaws do not grow to their full potential. I've made all these mistakes because my firstborn,
Starting point is 00:06:20 it was painful breastfeeding and being a first time mother, I thought, okay, maybe no one told me it's like meant to hurt this much. And I just persisted. And eventually we got into the group of things and only one maternal nurse said, maybe you should check for a tongue tie. But when I looked on the internet, all it said was a tongue tie could affect their feeding or maybe their speech development down the road. And I thought, I'm sure this is just how he's made. He's just meant to be this way. I'll ignore it because they're just temporary problems I'll deal with later. Not knowing that if the tongue isn't able to move to its full mobility, it will cause breathing issues.
Starting point is 00:06:57 The face won't grow to its full size. You essentially don't reach your genetic potential. And it may not even be tongue tie. It may be that, I mean, bottle feeding is not this evil. Bottle feeding is, you know, it's not optimal. Breast milk's obviously the best, but I think it's more pacifiers are the problem because I'm seeing little kids now, you'll see them too, they're three years old and they're walking around during the day and they've got a pacifier in their mouth the problem with this is it goes above the tongue the child sucks on it their jaws hang open rather
Starting point is 00:07:31 than in occlusion and so the tongue sorry i'm doing this face to show that the face loses that internal support for people that are that are, we obviously put this on YouTube, go watch what she was doing so you can get the visual. I think it's important. Okay. Yeah. Oh, you didn't capture the visual. No, no, we do capture the visual. I'm saying for people that are listening, go watch the video as well on YouTube because it captures the visual. Right. Right. Yeah. So when the tongue is beneath the pacifier all day and during sleep, that is the one muscle inside the skull that's meant to sit suctioned beneath the bottom jaw and the mouth roof. It's low. And so that support's gone to the top jaw and it actually will cave in. It's similar to removing the rods from a tent. If you take those rods out, it will
Starting point is 00:08:18 start to sink in. Now that's where the nasal cavity is. It starts to squish in the nasal cavity is it starts to squish in the nasal cavity and the mouth roof rather than be flat it's high and vaulted all of these structural issues arise because the tongue was never taught to be in the right position because the child was always pacified for years with the incorrect tongue posture does it go like supposed to be like this but it kind of goes like this exactly yes so it just basically like turns into like what it's like maybe more of like an oval or shape to like a triangle. It's kind of like a squarish rainbow is optimal. Okay. Is what the top jaw should look like molar to molar, but we're getting a very narrow triangle that's going too high up and the molar width distance is narrower than it should be. What are other things that are
Starting point is 00:09:06 happening? I can imagine it's what we're eating is a lot of soft food. Are there any other things that you're seeing from a young age that parents can avoid? I've made these mistakes with my first two. I was giving them the pouchy foods, you know, that has the spout and they're so convenient. Oh, vegetables, no mess. Have them in the car. They do not allow your child to chew food. They need to be chewing. And before we had refrigeration and all of these on-the-go snacks, children would chew on steak or biltong, which is dehydrated meat. So when you take the meat, the moisture out of the meat, it's called biltong. They still do this in Central Africa where people don't have a modern kitchen, electricity,
Starting point is 00:09:48 refrigeration. And dehydrated meat is very chewy. It's very brittle. And so from that early age of one year old, the child will teeth on that and they will chew on that and they will suck on it and consume it. And this is the beginning of jaw development from infancy. And I find it really fascinating that if you look at the statistics on malocclusion, which is whether or not the jaws are lining up properly
Starting point is 00:10:13 or not, in those geographic locations, say in remote Africa, they always have perfect occlusion or malocclusion one, which means the jaws line up perfectly, the teeth will line up, but maybe malocclusion one, which means the jaws line up perfectly. The teeth will line up, but maybe malocclusion one, there's a tooth missing or crooked or something is wear and tear. I'm obsessed with that because so much so that I went and bought, you're not going to think this is crazy, but the audience is sap from Africa. It's gum. It's gum, like sap that is made from the trees in Africa that they chew chew on so i can chew on my sap gum yeah i've seen this yeah you know what she's so loud is i bought you that gum no you didn't
Starting point is 00:10:52 you bought me the jaw liner gum you bought me jaw liner gum don't don't take credit for my african tree stop go ahead the last hundred years since we've had refrigeration, our malocclusion in the developed Western world has continued to become more prevalent. So most people will have a degree of malocclusion two, where they have the overbite or malocclusion three, the underbite. But either way, it's a failure of the top jaw to come forward and broad enough because if it's set back, because it hasn't had the mechanical impact and loading to actually generate bone to line the teeth up properly then the bottom jaw has to either tuck in behind the retracted top jaw and create that double chin and weak chin profile
Starting point is 00:11:38 or it will adapt by jutting ahead of the top jaw and children are being sent to orthodontists with traditional methods who are just trying to move the teeth around to get the teeth to meet, but it's about the bones holding the teeth. It's not the teeth. They're just a symptom. It's exactly what happened to me was I got braces. I got the headgear. I got the retainers.
Starting point is 00:12:02 I got everything straightened. My teeth were perfectly straight, but my jaw wasn't in the right place. And as I got older into my 20s, it became a huge problem. And I ended up fixing it with double jaw surgery, which is a huge undertaking. And I don't think that the doctors even prepare you
Starting point is 00:12:22 for what an undertaking it is because it's a true, I'm glad I did it looking back, but it was like an identity crisis for two years. Right. Yes. I've seen doctors, they'll kind of not mention the extent of the recovery or what you're going through. And then the treatment happens and you go, wow, okay, this is a lot. But you are very, very fortunate that they suggested a double jaw surgery, going the surgery route and not genioplasty or orthognathic surgery, because sometimes surgeons get it wrong. They don't actually move the top jaw forward. And that's
Starting point is 00:12:58 what you had, that put your top jaw in the right position. And then it moved the bottom jaw to be where your face should be, bring you into alignment. But there's some doctors out there who will go, oh, the mandible, well, we'll just cut it and then we'll put it somewhere else. Not realizing that it's the top jaw that really needs to come into its right position. Do you know what I mean? Totally. I totally know what you mean. Maybe like a chin implant thing, thinking it's an aesthetic thing, but then it doesn't fix the underlying issue. It's like a whip. Absolutely, yes. If you're putting silicone to create a stronger mandible, the bottom jaw, you've still ignored that top jaw that is retracted, and that means the person has an airway issue.
Starting point is 00:13:36 So we can't just go for a cosmetic fix by cutting a square bottom jaw or implanting because we've left that mid face back in the airway tight. How did you originally get into all this to begin with? Well, I'm similar to Lauren. I had a bad experience. I think I was not completely satisfied with my structure growing up. I had a maxilla deficiency, but my teeth were straight, but I wouldn't have known back then it was a maxilla deficiency. I was just like, when I smile, you don't really see much of my teeth. I go to the orthodontist and I say, I think I want veneers. I want to lengthen my teeth and like upgrade my teeth. And they say, we can do that, but let's create space first with braces. So in my mid twenties, I had those metal
Starting point is 00:14:16 braces. And so they're doing that for a few months. And then me and my, my husband, who was my partner at the time, moved interstate for business. And so I took them off too early. I damaged the retainer that they gave me, that plastic thing with hot water. It melted. And I call them up and I go, oh my goodness, can you please replace it? And they said, sure. And then I wait weeks and nothing.
Starting point is 00:14:40 And I'm stressing because I think my teeth are going to shift. And then I call them up and I'm chasing up this retainer and they say, I'm so sorry, we have no idea. We never placed the order. So by the time the retainer comes, it doesn't fit anymore. My teeth gradually have shifted out of place, but I had no idea the extent of the damage this misaligned bite would cause me. 12 months later, I'm looking in the mirror and I've watched my face demise gradually. I've got one eye larger than the other. The other one is sunken in. My jaw is on a complete slant. It's warped. I'm completely asymmetric. And because you're told by orthodontics, oh, well, if you have anything wrong with your face, like for example, crooked teeth,
Starting point is 00:15:21 they tell people, oh, it's inherited. I'm looking at myself in the mirror saying, have I just aged really rapidly and really poorly? Have I got the worst genetics in the world? Not realizing that my bite had moved so much that I was only chewing on one side, making it dominant. I was having bone resorption on this side. And I still have this to a degree because I've never addressed the mandible. But eight years ago, when I went to the internet looking for solutions because plastic surgeons said that the one who didn't replace the retainer, he fobbed me off, of course, and said there was no issue. The plastic surgeon I went to said, okay, well, we'll just cut down this side of the jaw that's too long. And then we'll implant
Starting point is 00:16:02 with silicon the other cheekbone. And I'm just thinking, I can't do this because even if it is an improvement, I'll have no hope of actually bringing the face into proper alignment down the track because you would have cut away and implanted. So I went to the internet and I'm looking at asymmetry forums, and I even put a photo up of myself and a kind stranger said, you need to look at palate expansion, which I'd never heard of. And it was happening with adults in the USA, but was very rare in Australia. I did eventually find an orthodontist who would do it with me, who had done it with adults and it worked. I had to grow my face back gradually. And so it completely repaired my confidence, my health. This, I was amazed, honestly, by it hadn't only fixed the damage by the poor orthodontic care, but it made my midface healthier than it had even been before the damage.
Starting point is 00:16:56 You almost, don't you feel like I feel like this, that I look younger once my face was in alignment than I did before. Isn't that, but I'm older. Does that make sense? Absolutely. Yeah. And this is another thing I want to say to people, and this isn't related to you,
Starting point is 00:17:11 but I'm saying when this is, the reason we look older before we grow our jaw properly is we will have nasolabial folds in our teens or even childhood. Children are like, because the mouth roof is too small and it's back. And so everyone's trying to use filler to get rid of nasolabial folds, unaware that it's the bone structure. It's the cheeks point being too close together to the nose
Starting point is 00:17:36 bridge, creating a fold here. And I looked older then before I expanded. And because I'm not completely in alignment, I'm still, I have to move the device once more. I have a deeper nasolabial fold on one side where it's weak, where I'm only for the first time in years, putting that impact back on that side when I'm chewing. And so I notice it starts to vanish the more I can build up the bone structure. And so what's taken me many years to figure out, I've done so much trial and error. People could read my book and learn about what's the true root cause of their problems and bring themselves into alignment in six months. It's really crazy. Your book is what really got me to wanting you on the podcast. Why I'm passionate about talking about this on my platform is I see so many young women so overfilled and they're using filler to compensate for the bones.
Starting point is 00:18:35 And they don't realize that what they're trying to fix has to do with the bone, not to artificially fill it with filler. And people will text me online or DM me and they'll say like, what filler do you have in your face? And I'm like, don't get tons of filler in your face. It does multiple things. It also causes so much inflammation, but it's not fixing the root of the problem. And I thought you could speak on this more eloquently. I was thinking about this just earlier because I was at the hairdresser flicking through those celebrity magazines and, you know, everybody ages. But you'll see you can tell when people have too much filler and surgeries and it's not giving the desired effect because it's it's combating one section without treating the face holistically. So if you have a maxilla deficiency, which people
Starting point is 00:19:26 now have from childhood, but particularly when you reach a certain age, you shrink. Tell us, what's a kindergarten word of a maxilla? People don't know what that means. Yeah. So the maxilla is the top jaw. Got it. It contains the eye sockets, the cheekbones, the nasal bridge, the mouth roof, and the top dentition. And when this starts to shrink and wither from our late 30s onwards, it takes the eye sockets and they cave in. So the eyes will narrow and appear smaller. The teeth, people are more prone to have more, they say, oh, I had straight teeth, but now I'm in my 60s and my teeth are crooked. It's because the jaws are shrinking and the cheeks flatten and this creates jowls. So they may not be overweight, but they will have sagging of the skin, not
Starting point is 00:20:09 because the skin is so lax necessarily. I mean, there's that as well, but it's that there's no support to the fat pads of the cheeks anymore because the bone, they're losing it. I can think of a celebrity of who you're talking about, like right off the bat. Yeah. I don't want to call it out. We won't name names, but people will know it when they see it. A celebrity will get silicon cheek implants, but their eyes are squinty. They've got this, you're seeing it everywhere.
Starting point is 00:20:33 And then they overfill the under eye, which pushes up on the eye. You can see it too. Like, I don't know. I feel like in my other life, I would be an injector. You can see the pressing up of the filler because you really have to be careful where you fill because it can really impact. It can make you look older. So say somebody doesn't, say someone has a proper jaw structure. Are you talking about yourself? No, no. But if you, that has, you know, they don't have, they haven't had a narrowing,
Starting point is 00:21:06 but they're aging. What are things that people can do? And we'll get back to the other stuff, but what are things people can do to keep proper jaw strength and form and shape as they age? Is it chewing on both sides? Is it chewing a specific thing? Is it exercise? Like what are the things just so that this doesn't happen to people? Absolutely. Keep your jaw bones dense. So a hard food diet, chewing as much as possible. I am a proponent for one product that is a silicon-based product. It goes between all of the molars and the front teeth because in modern society, we actually don't have any bite force on the front teeth. You have that jaws or size thing. Is that not the one you're talking about? That's actually not the one I'm talking about.
Starting point is 00:21:45 I prefer the one that covers all of the bite evenly rather than just the front teeth. And by doing that, you're actually stimulating the front of the jaws, not just the back molars
Starting point is 00:21:55 or overusing. It's Alfie Chew. Can you get it on like Amazon or something? You can find it on my page if you want to go to Nurturing Healthy Faces. Alfie, Alfie.
Starting point is 00:22:03 A-L-F-I-Chew. Alfie Chew. Yeah. I love the company. The people who run it are amazing. And that's the only one I use because it's an even loading on the dental arch. How often and how many times a week? I would say you could use it daily for 15 minutes. Okay. If you have a TMJ dysfunction, it's probably not a product for you if it's going to aggravate chewing. I mean, aggravate pain with chewing, but for someone who just wants to keep their jawline more defined and you have to work the muscles of the face if you want to have toned and defined jaws. And the jaws of the face, like I said, it's not just about the jawline, the maxilla,
Starting point is 00:22:45 the cheekbones, the alveolar bone that holds the teeth. So do this, keep the tongue muscle strong and fit into your later life. So part of the reason why the maxilla, the top jaw sinks first, taking the eye sockets in and the cheeks in, is that our whole body experiences sarcopenia as we age. So we have muscle wastage. And this is why doctors will say to the elderly, keep up weight-bearing exercise to ward off osteoporosis and keep that bone density. Well, keeping the muscle, the tongue muscle strong and agile. So if you do tongue exercises, that allows it to be more of a strong support internally to the jaw. Because if you have a weak tongue muscle, that allows it to be more of a strong support internally to the jaw. Because if you have a weak tongue muscle, the jaw is now losing support. For me, I'm wearing an MSC
Starting point is 00:23:32 at the moment, which is a maxillary skeletal expander. It's an orthodontic device. I'm a huge fan of it because for adults, it develops the mouth roof. It can either hook in, this one in particular that I'm using has screws into my mouth roof. Okay. So it's in the top of your mouth. It is. Okay. Yeah. And you turn it with a key. That's why I speak a little bit funny sometimes. It's in my mouth roof right now. You turn it with a key gradually. And at the moment I'm in retention phase, so I've stopped turning, but it's putting that pressure to keep those bones generating new bone osteoblasts rather than bone resorption. And so I plan on using it probably every 10 years for
Starting point is 00:24:12 the rest of my life, just to keep my jaws in a more youthful, healthy position, because we know that sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea is rife with older populations. The reason is they've probably already had a maxillary deficiency, and if not, a jaw deficiency, if not, they're losing the jaws. The size of the jaws are falling in, taking the airway size with it, and then there is less space for the tongue to reside in the oral cavity, and it gets sucked back into their throat when they sleep. And because they're having pauses in breathing or snoring that wakes them up because they're sucking their tongue into their throat and almost suffocating,
Starting point is 00:24:49 it fragments their sleep quality. So they're not spending enough time in REM sleep. They're not therefore not detoxifying properly, repairing their body like they should be. If you don't sleep well, you will age quickly. Funny enough, right after we talked to you today, not right after, Matthew Walker, do you know him? He wrote the book, Why We Sleep. Oh, okay. He's coming on to talk all about this stuff. But no, I mean, just hearing you talk, there's so many things that are going off in my mind, just hearing so many people that have these issues, but they're not correlating it to what you're talking about. Absolutely. Tongue posture is such an important topic that needs to
Starting point is 00:25:22 be talked about more. And that's another reason that I harassed you to come on the show. Can you talk to us about tongue posture and the exercises we can be doing and how we should be sleeping and how we should be supporting our tongue posture? Yes. So we need to have it suctioned on the mouth roof. For an adult who's cognitively mature enough to be aware of their poor habits and address it, cool cool you can probably look up mewing videos by every day all day long every second michael it's just like sucking on
Starting point is 00:25:51 a tit just suck it up you can do it that's not what it's like yeah it is yeah it is it's like you're breastfeeding right yeah yeah exactly but shouldn't the tongue rest right behind the two front teeth at the top of the mouth comfortably? Pardon? Can you put the tongue behind the front teeth? Yes, but you should also practice suctioning your tongue. You could practice this, by the way. I see about a millimeter you could practice. Proper tongue posture would mean that your tongue is resting on the roof of your mouth comfortably without thought. Is that?
Starting point is 00:26:21 Yes. So you'll have to consciously think about this at first until it becomes second nature. it's not just about the pressure it's more of a suction so it's like this so if you went to a myofunctional therapist this is the first thing they ask you to do how long can you suction it there and they'll ask your child to click but when your jaws are together it should stay like this yeah perfect, perfect. Perfect. But what I've discovered having three children and two of them with orofacial myology problems, because I didn't know about tongue ties when they were born. So I never gave them a phrenectomy. And I think it's a thing that runs in my family because I've seen it popping up and I think I had it,
Starting point is 00:27:01 is if you address a tongue tie when they're three-year-olds, they've already learnt dysfunctional tongue thrusting or keeping the tongue low because it was restricted. And so you can release the frenum, that doesn't mean they'll automatically just start using their tongue properly. My children didn't babble as much as my third born, who I gave a frenectomy to when she was two days old. The third born is now using the tongue, it's got mobility, it's got strength, and she's not had the same breathing issues that the first two did. Because you just didn't know.
Starting point is 00:27:30 I just didn't know until I had my, I didn't know for my first. When I looked at my second born, I knew about tongue ties by that point, but it wasn't obvious like my first born had been. And so I thought, great, she doesn't have one, but sometimes they're quite sneaky. And it wasn't until she developed to two and I had her assess and I said, she has a tongue tie. So to go back to something you said earlier is, and I want to be careful how I say this because I'm not a woman and I don't breastfeed, but would a potential early indication of this be discomfort while breastfeeding? Yes. And I didn't have that with my second born. So she had a more subtle tongue tie. So with tongue posture, if someone's listening, what are the exercises they can do to support tongue posture? I personally have found, and you could speak more eloquently,
Starting point is 00:28:17 that mouth taping every night has completely changed my tongue posture. Really? Completely, because my mouth supported all night long. And so my tongue is like mewing while I sleep. Whereas if I didn't mouth tape, it would be relaxed. Yes. Well, when we keep the mouth closed, the teeth together and the lips touching, then the tongue has a chance to suction on the palate. When the mandible is falling down the lower jaw, that tongue will go down low with it. And so you're losing that support to the top jaw at night when you're sleeping. So it's certainly a tool. I know that an expert on breathing, Patrick McEwen, he's a big advocate for taping. And I know you've got a really nice one as well. That's very,
Starting point is 00:29:03 you know, it looks a bit more luxe. If you're just relaxing on the couch, you can use it even before bedtime. For sure, that's a good tool for helping keep your lips together and encourage your tongue to be high in the mouth. I do not mess around with non-toxic cleaning supplies. I'm telling you, it is something that is so important to me. It's important to my kids, even Michael. And the brand that we use that I always use is Branch Basics. It's free of fragrance, hormone disruptors, and harmful preservatives. There are so many crazy ingredients that I've learned about in cleaning supplies. And
Starting point is 00:29:37 just making that shift is going to make your house so much more non-toxic. I like their premium starter kit. This replaces all your harmful cleaning products in the home in like one swoop. They also, they even have this new luxurious hand soap and it's made with only the safest ingredients to nourish your skin. I actually travel with it and if we are gone for a long period of time, I'll put the hand soap in the bathroom. It's such an easy shift. It's such a quick thing you can do. My kids are washing their hands a lot. I am, Michael is, and just to replace the hand soap and know it's non-toxic is incredible. Changing my home to all non-toxic has been a game changer. I noticed that when I go home, my nervous system immediately relaxes. So home is where you should go to detox, not retox.
Starting point is 00:30:27 So if your home is full of chemicals, it's really hard to detox. Branch Basics makes it very easy. Save 15% off your starter kit on their new hand soap when you use code skinny at branchbasics.com. Again, that's code skinny for 15% off when you purchase a starter kit or their new gel hand soap. Every single day, like clockwork, I take my probiotic. I like to take it in the morning. I will do lemon water with electrolytes. Sometimes I'll throw some ginger in there and I will take two probiotics. The probiotics that I've been taking for the last couple years are just Thrive Probiotic. This is one of the only probiotics that actually survived the trip to your gut. I like it so much that I've interviewed the founder like three times.
Starting point is 00:31:11 I think she's just a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the gut. I travel with Just Thrive. Michael travels with it. It comes in like little bottles and big bottles. I even sometimes lately have been trying their gummies. I give their gummies to my kids. It's the same, the Just Thrive probiotic formula, but it comes in a gummy form and it tastes so good. While you're on the website, if you're looking for something else to grab, they have this thing called Just Calm.
Starting point is 00:31:38 And it's a psychobiotic and it really works in tandem with a probiotic. So those are the two moves on the site if you want to support your gut. Right now, when you go to justthrivehealth.com and use promo code skinny, you can get 20% off a 90-day bottle of Just Thrive probiotic and Just Calm. That's like essentially getting a month for free. The gut is so essential for sleep, for mood, for diet, for health. I am all about a good probiotic.
Starting point is 00:32:07 It's clinically proven and available for you at justthrivehealth.com with promo code skinny. Fish oil. Let's talk about it. I found out I needed to be on a serious fish oil because I had my inflammation levels checked and they were like, oh my God, you need fish oil immediately. So JS Health, they have a fish oil that's high strength, pure my God, you need fish oil immediately. So JS Health, they have a fish oil that's high strength, pure quality. It's great fish oil at 1.5 grams per capsule. It's a very therapeutic dose. Also, this is so random, but it's vanilla coated. So you can ensure there's no like fishy aftertaste or fish burps. I like her products because they're heavy metal tested. This is really important when it comes
Starting point is 00:32:46 to picking a fish oil. JS Health also has an incredible magnesium blend. If you're looking for something to do like a nightcap with every time you go to sleep, you have to check out their powder. It contains 400 milligrams of three different forms of bioavailable magnesium to support your nervous system. I cannot go to bed without magnesium water. I wouldn't even think of it. If you're unfamiliar with JS Health Vitamins, they're renowned around the world for their transformational science-backed supplements that deliver results. She's been on our podcast before. She uses the highest quality ingredients at therapeutic doses based on meticulous research. They're all designed in Australia,
Starting point is 00:33:25 which is really, really incredible because they really take what's in their vitamins seriously. Anyway, if you're on their site, you got to get the fish oil, especially if you feel like you're inflamed a lot. Fish oil has been a game changer for me on my health and fitness journey because I was so inflamed before I started lifting weights and changing my lifestyle. So I take my inflammation seriously, as you guys know, with the ice roller. And then, like I said, I wouldn't dare go to bed without my magnesium powder. So important to end the night. Starting point is 00:34:05 so for parents out there who have children that they think might have this issue young children what would be some of the suggestions you would make for them to start potentially working on this with their kids? It's really hard because I'll have mothers message me and say, I'm noticing this in my 18 month old. And you want to teach them the right habits. You might give them a phrenectomy. They may not need a phrenectomy. Maybe they've just developed a bad oral habit. Can you tell me, sorry, I'm going to ask stupid questions on a phrenectomy. Is this something where they take a laser and cut it? Is it something you have take a laser and cut it?
Starting point is 00:34:45 Is it something you have to put the kid out or they have to sedate? What is required and what is done? It's hard because if you identify this with a newborn, you snip it, there's no anesthesia. The infant essentially doesn't really realize what's happened and they learn to use their tongue straight away. If you do a phrenectomy with a laser or a surgery, they have to have a general anesthetic if they're above 18 months old. So it's way more involved for the child. They have to go to the hospital, et cetera. Then that child who's maybe two, who's just had a phrenectomy has already learnt incorrect habits and they are too cognitively immature to learn how to correct them. You can take them to a myofunctional therapist. They're not
Starting point is 00:35:30 going to know how to follow the instructions. And so unless they're around age four, it might start to be effective. Three, if your child is really agreeable, but it's hard to watch and wait. And that's why I love a couple of the female orthodontists that I've spoken to in the US who do, I mean, there's some great myofunctional therapists over here as well. And there are in Australia, the Australian Academy of Myofunctional Therapy are amazing. I trained with them. But in terms of orthodontics, sometimes a child will not be able to correct their tongue posture unless there's space in the jaw to accommodate it. And if you have that high V-shaped mouth roof, you'll have to address that first before you ask the child to meet the mouth roof with the tongue. And that's not until they're four if you're lucky.
Starting point is 00:36:14 So you want to expand the palate first and then address the tongue tie so the tongue has a place to go in the palate because if the palate's too thin, the tongue can't go nicely. And the expander would be something similar to what you're wearing right now. Is that correct? With the child version, it's removable. Sometimes they glue it to the molars so they'll have to wear it even when they're eating. But there's also removable versions. And so they're not doing the screw into the mouth roof, thank God, because that's a bit
Starting point is 00:36:40 more invasive. The reason we do that with adults is because we're skeletally mature. We're not as malleable as a child. And so you can use a removable appliance on a child and they will just grow really nicely. With an adult, there's a little bit more resistance to palate expansion because the suture on the midline of the palate, which is the mouth roof, has fused. And so to open that and ensure that you're actually developing the mouth roof and not putting unwanted pressure on the teeth roots, which would damage the vitality of the teeth, you hook it into the mouth roof. However, I have the first time I ever, so I've done this twice now, right? I did it eight years ago when I was very asymmetric and now I'm doing it again because I still wasn't satisfied with the symmetry of my top jaw.
Starting point is 00:37:30 I had a removable version. It worked great. I know that the Vivos DNA appliance and maybe Bioblock, there are some removable versions for adults. They work well. You've just got to be careful when you use them. I want to discuss airway because I have heard when a child does not have a proper space for their airway to breathe then there can be behavioral issues have you heard this yes can you talk a little bit about that yeah so i'm really passionate about this space because i do believe that face care and facial development is now the future of health care agreed Because that's where the airway is. And that's what's governing how well a child is rested. It governs how much oxygen reaches the blood. And if a child or an adult is not oxygenating well through the nose and must rely on the
Starting point is 00:38:18 mouth, they are not saturating the blood adequately. And how the body responds to not enough oxygen levels in the blood is it speeds the heart up because it senses, I need to try and pump more oxygen. There's not quite enough getting to the organs and everywhere it's needed. And so your respiration rate also goes up to accommodate this higher heart rate. You're now in a sympathetic fight and flight state 24-7. So your nervous system is now out of alignment too. You also don't go into deep sleep for as long. And so your detoxification, your ability to get into rest and digest is suppressed. And if you're not a calm rest and digest nasal breather,
Starting point is 00:38:58 then you're not extracting nutrients from food properly. When we rest and digest, which is the parasympathetic state we should occupy most of the time, unless there's some immediate stressor, we should be in that calm state so that we switch on digestion, we digest food, extract nutrients, carry them to all the cells of the body, and we've got an energy supply. But little kids are not sleeping properly, they're in fight and flight, chronic low-level fight and flight all the time. And this manifests with symptoms of ADHD. So attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Starting point is 00:39:34 It's a label that's really just symptoms. We don't say it's a syndrome that's genetic. It's just this occurrence that's quite prevalent now that is symptoms. Attention deficit and hyperactivity. These things happen when a child cannot sleep properly and they cannot nasal breathe well enough to oxygenate the blood. And we know from studies that it affects learning and development. So they won't be able to concentrate in class as well as their peers. They'll be disruptive. They have poor impulse control. They essentially become the naughty kid of the class or the child that thinks, oh, I'm not as smart as everybody else. Or because they don't breathe
Starting point is 00:40:11 well and their mouth breathe, their posture is bad. Believe it or not, it affects their athletic output, their posture. So they start to look like this. They have to angle their neck to let air in. And so their coordination is not as good as their peers. It's really sad that children are put on drugs to try to compensate and believe that this is just who they are genetically when actually there was some lifestyle issues that have set them down a trajectory that's nowhere near their potential. And if you're going to give them Ritalin to manage it, unfortunately that drug actually can damage their sleep even further. way near their potential. And if you're going to give them Ritalin to manage it, unfortunately,
Starting point is 00:40:45 that drug actually can damage their sleep even further. The epidemic here is that people are just, like you said, giving medicine for something that fundamentally needs to be fixed, which is the foundation of the job. It's a physical problem that then manifests. This is really important information for people to know because the way you just described that kid, we can all think of 10 kids in our class that looked like that. I mean, I can actually like think even in movies mr burns has no jaw in that long like it's like almost becomes like this villained character and i think that if people knew that the reason is because of oxygen and air and not nose breathing it would be people it's like almost outrageous that we're prescribing medication for it. Well, I see the common theme of this show is, and people probably are sick of me saying this, but we've evolved much slower than our environment. Right. So like a lot of the things that are, that we use daily now, a lot of the diets,
Starting point is 00:42:00 a lot of the practices have gotten so far away from the thousands and thousands of years, the way that like our bodies and our structures and our minds evolved that it hasn't been enough time for our structures to catch up with that environmental change. So what you're saying makes a lot of sense because if we used to eat in a certain way and have access to certain diets and breastfeed a lot more and had an ability to be able to see over a tongue tie much earlier, a lot of this would be caught. But if you're going through all this now and your diet doesn't match the way your jaw should be growing or you don't catch these issues and now you're saying, okay, well, we have all this modern medicine that can correct it. That's the real problem here. It's just a lack of information in the way we've evolved.
Starting point is 00:42:33 Absolutely. It's a bit of a dis-evolution. And when you watch cartoons, you'll see that they characterize cavemen as these dumbed down, huge jaws, gapped teeth, huge jaw. When in fact, I think paleolithic guys and girls are probably really hot. And we seem to think we're evolving, but actually we're having a lot of issues that wouldn't have been there hundreds of years ago.
Starting point is 00:42:58 Yeah. I mean, like if you just think about the human being, like as an animal, there's a reason we have these sharp canines and these sharp teeth, right? It's not to suck down soft foods and smoothies. It's just a genetic makeup. And I know some people, and I'm not going to get into a whole diet thing here, but if you just think about us as animals, these teeth like this don't exist to have soft food diets. There's no reason for them to be there then. Yes, absolutely. Tell us about supermodels. What are they structurally blessed with that you've seen from a bone perspective?
Starting point is 00:43:37 I was just looking, as I said, at magazines. And when you look at a supermodel's face, the top jaw, the midface, the maxilla that I'm talking about is always very well developed. And my message, which is optimistic to everyone, is, I mean, they have beautiful traits, but they are developmentally blessed, as in nothing's impeded their development. So their alignment's on. Their alignment's on. And beauty is really a synonym, the visual aspect of health. And so that supermodel has great occlusion, better airways, a straighter back because everything's in alignment. And when you can breathe properly, it's easier not to have a weight issue because when the body
Starting point is 00:44:19 has oxygen, it converts glucose into energy better. We now have an obesity epidemic, and we also have a jaw epidemic. So people aren't breathing properly, and without enough oxygen supply, they actually have that suppressed digestion, which is more inclined to store weight, food as weight, than usable energy. But in terms of the face, a supermodel, barely any nasolabial folds. Why? Because they have a really forward, broad mouth roof. And people, it sounds really strange, but that is why they have the wide smile. They actually have a flat, broad mouth roof that is forward grown, that pushes those cheekbones wide and high, takes the eye sockets out wide and forward facing. And they get this beautiful line between the eye
Starting point is 00:45:05 socket to the side of the cheekbone. And the lips are forward on the face because those jaws are also forward. And this is what we can all create something similar if we're guided to grow to our potential. So it's really all starting with the alignment and not being so focused on the filler. This is really interesting that you're saying this about weight loss and nose breathing, because I was a mouth breather for a long time because of all the jaw surgery was just like a lot. And I, over the past three years have lost 60 pounds. I've recently for the last year, been mouth taping every single night. And I swear it does do something. And you started eating
Starting point is 00:45:46 steaks. I know I've done a lot of different things, but one of the things I've done is mouth tape. And I noticed that like my metabolism has sped up. Does that correlate with the oxygen? I think so because I'm with you on this. I used to battle my weight more in my twenties when I didn't have good alignment and great breathing. So if you could prescribe, let's just say somebody, they're an adult, no more on kids,
Starting point is 00:46:27 but we can go back to kids, but they're an adult and they say, okay, my jaw is not in alignment. I have these issues that we're all talking about. Least expensive to most expensive in terms of what they can start doing today, where would you start with? Say someone has no resources, no money, and they're just like, what can I do? And then all the way up to someone who maybe has some resources and can jump right into some intervention. Yeah. Good question. I feel for parents who say I have five children and I'm noticing these symptoms in all of them, this is a big investment. And you know how parents save for their child's college education? I feel as though going forward, you'll want to save for their jaw development because that's the thing that's going to help your child learn better by oxygenating their
Starting point is 00:47:08 prefrontal cortex, bringing the body into alignment, letting their personality express its potential and avoid all of these health issues. That's probably the biggest change maker you should be prioritizing as a parent and just knowing where to go. So you cannot walk into any orthodontist and get this kind of treatment because there's an old way of doing things that's prevalent and it's just looking at teeth and ignoring the mouth roof in the airway. You need to find an airway orthodontist who does palate expansion. There are the appliances that I've talked about and there'll be a couple of thousand dollars, maybe multiple thousands of dollars. There's a few companies
Starting point is 00:47:45 that do clear aligners now that are actually pallet expanders. This has just entered the market. There's Invisalign are now doing it in the USA and Canada, and there are some other companies. I think this is a great step in perhaps making entry into doing this more affordable, perhaps. But if you can't afford that, you will need to ensure your child has a hard food diet, doesn't have a pacifier in their mouth during the day. I'll never do a pacifier again if I have kids. I'm not even going to give them a pacifier. Yeah. Just avoid it. Nope. Just avoid it. And it's best to breastfeed A because obviously the breast milk is so much more nutritious. But if you don't breastfeed and you bottle feed, I find children then want
Starting point is 00:48:24 pacifiers because they're bottle fed. They want like that sucking. Breastfed babies, I don't think particularly warm to pacifiers. You must have been bottle fed. You love sucking. I was breastfed a long time.
Starting point is 00:48:35 I think your mom told you that, but I don't know if it's actually true. I feel like that's maybe an old wives tale. My airwaves are wide open. Go ahead. This is so hilarious.
Starting point is 00:48:43 A tall tale. And another thing that they want to find is a myofunctional therapist who is doing more than just giving them something to chew on there's some who call themselves a myofunctional therapist and really they're just selling a product and saying give your child this to chew on and on your way i won't say the brand because i don't want to discredit but you need someone who actually has techniques to someone who's good with children who's going to engage them in using the tongue properly, articulating properly, building up tongue strength. They need to have a repertoire of activities to get that child from mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, wrong posture to
Starting point is 00:49:20 a healthy posture. If that's too expensive, I know that my functional therapists sometimes offer virtual consults. Maybe if you have more than one child and it's more economical to do it virtually and you can have your children doing it together, that might be a gateway to getting on track. And what about for adults? So you're a 25, 30 year old, older adult that realizes that you have this issue now and you've been maybe thinking about doing filler or implant or something, but now you realize after listening to this that it's something different. Yeah. Where would you maybe persuade them to start? They can look into MSC, Bioblock, Vivos DNA, Mapei, Sapei.
Starting point is 00:49:56 It sounds like you're speaking Mandarin. I feel like you're going to have to explain. You say you're like, basa, tutu. I don't know if you're trying to explain what you mean. I feel like I'm in ballet and you're like, plie, pas de bourree. Oh my goodness. Okay, you're right. Sorry. So MAPE stands for maxillary, no, miniscule assisted rapid palatal expansion.
Starting point is 00:50:21 And then SAPE is surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion is that what I got no that's not what you had these so these are the devices that you were in the mouth you could look in I've been double jaw surgery what you went through if if you think you know you're intense yeah I'm intense if you like can you tell yeah and those are a start for adults. So vivos, DNA, bioblock, Schwartz. You really need to know those terms to look for orthodontists who are A, advertising adult maxillary expansion or adult palate expansion. And I really hope that putting this information out there
Starting point is 00:50:59 encourages more traditional orthodontists or orthodontists just coming into the field and entering to upskill into understanding how to develop the jaw rather than just having more dealing with teeth because we're about to have a demand now of adults and children saying this sounds exactly like me this is what I need where do I get it and it's so niche at the moment we need more people offering it. My favorite water, especially when I'm traveling, especially is smart water. First of all, it's alkaline, which keeps you hydrated throughout an active life. I am traveling a lot right now. So whether I'm running at the gym or I'm running meetings or I'm running podcasts, I like a good water.
Starting point is 00:51:47 And this one is one that I constantly go for. It's vapor distilled. It has added electrolytes and you get this pure crisp taste with those added electrolytes. And then also, and this is important to me, it has a 9.5 plus pH and added antioxidants. This is weird, but I love the bottle. I love the shape. I love how it fits in my handbag, my backpack, my gym bag. I give this water to my kids all the time. This is just a really great water to elevate in all areas of life. I like having it on the table when we podcast, we give it to the guests. Michael drinks it, but it really is my water, especially when traveling. It's my go-to one. I always reach for it whenever I'm on the go. I like it so much that I actually had a case shipped to where I'm traveling right now. I'm very specific about the water that I drink, and I'm a big water drinker.
Starting point is 00:52:44 Okay, you guys know this if you follow my broadcast channel on Instagram. I'm all about the water that I drink, and I'm a big water drinker. I want them to be licking their lips every single time I bring out real fresh dog food that's delivered straight to my door by the farmer's dog. Their recipes are developed by vet nutritionists. Everything, and this is so important to me if you know me, is made with real meat and veggies. Everything's portioned for your dogs and this is so important to me if you know me, is made with real meat and
Starting point is 00:53:25 veggies. Everything's portioned for your dogs. They make it easy to say goodbye to those brown, sick, dry, crusty balls. You want to feed your dog real food with real benefits. Traditional dry and wet dog food are usually processed. And what I like about the farmer's dog is it's not, which is amazing. They use quality ingredients. It's really awesome if you're trying to maintain a dog's weight. Boone had to lose a couple inches and this really helped him. He has no more weepy eyes, which I'm very proud of because when we first rescued him, he had super weepy eyes and it's gone. I'm on the board of this charity and it's called I Stand With My Pack. You guys may recognize this charity because I have had the founder and creator of it on the podcast. This charity is absolutely amazing if you're looking to foster or adopt a dog. So it's a female-run nonprofit organization that works locally in LA and internationally to save the lives of animals and prevent
Starting point is 00:54:59 suffering and cruelty. I am passionate about this specifically because I learned how crazy these high-risk kill shelters are in LA City. If you're looking for a dog, I Stand With My Pack supports so many incredibly sweet, kind, amazing dogs. And I know this firsthand because they come in dear media all the time and I get to hang out with them and meet them and pet them and love them. Sometimes you'll see them pop up on my Instagram story. So if you're looking for a dog or a cat right now, or you have a friend who's looking, please direct them to Istandwithmypack.org. Also, if you guys would like to donate to a cause where 100% of the proceeds actually go to the charity, check them out. You can go on their site. Like I said, istandwithmypack.org
Starting point is 00:55:45 and just click the donate button. I am so passionate about this. Every animal that they rescue is in desperate need of medical checkups. So that's what your money will go to. You can go on. It takes two seconds to donate and it's an important cause. istandwithmy pack.org. What's happening is that people are going and getting their face filled and they're realizing that's not fixing the problem. If you fill your nasial, whatever it folds, it's not fixing the problem. It's just putting filler in your face, which actually brings the eye down. If you really want to get into it. And also, I know you went viral.
Starting point is 00:56:23 So it's not pulling the eye up with the actual bone structure. Didn't you have a viral moment too of cautioning parents to not have children get braces? Yes. Okay, two very important questions. I'll start with Lauren and then I'll go to braces, Michael. So with the Botox, you are paralyzing muscle rather than developing muscle. We want operating muscles if we're to have healthy bones beneath and you're getting in a perpetual cycle of having to do that
Starting point is 00:56:50 every few months. So we don't want to just rely on filler because what we're doing by doing cosmetic fixes is actually masking what is a maxillary jaw deficiency. And so you're masking a health issue. If you have deep nasolabial folds that you don't like, or you have a nose that's pulling back and you don't like the profile, you don't like that your lips are thinning, it's all because of the structural support caving in. And because of that, you have an airway deficiency. And so sleep is compromised and breathing and oxygen saturation is compromised. So you really want to address the root cause that will fix the root cause of the aesthetic problem, reveal a dormant natural beauty, and actually help your longevity improve.
Starting point is 00:57:35 So it's all three of those things. It's getting to the root cause. And then for parents, they want to do the right thing by their children they're investing lots of money in braces because that's really the mainstream solution they're told to do but the problem with just moving the teeth is for many of the children the crooked teeth comes from a low tongue posture and the wrong breathing that's allowing those jaws to sink in so if you just tamper with the teeth you might flare them out to a position where they get to a straight line but you can kind of tell looking at the teeth, sometimes the faces, there's like a narrow face and flared toothy smile. A, it doesn't look ideal, but B, that child has a small airway that still needs to be addressed. So please don't put them in braces because once they come off, there's a
Starting point is 00:58:20 retainer. They have to wear the retainer. Otherwise those teeth just crumple up again because the orofacial problems, the tongue posture and the breathing weren't addressed. And so the problem with wearing the retainer from age 12 is that you're locking the bite in place. And so we have a lot of adults, they have a narrow dental arch. So you're not seeing many teeth when they smile because the arch has been locked since they were 12 or 13. How does the jaw continue to move if you've locked the teeth and they can't move? So you need to expand the jaw and develop the airway and the face to accommodate teeth in a straight line. You need to address with myofunctional therapy whatever ill habits were causing or keeping the malocclusion,
Starting point is 00:59:03 so tongue posture, breathing through the nose, right swallow. And after that, in theory, you shouldn't need to wear a retainer because everything's now in harmony. If you wanted to have a removable retainer on hand, I don't know if you could perhaps use that, but you really don't want to lock those teeth in place in adolescence. If you want that child to have the flexibility to grow until they're 19 or 20. How's our bone structure? Don't lie. You've got great bone structures. You're very fortunate. Is my smile wide enough?
Starting point is 00:59:30 You're showing so many teeth. And I was intimidated coming on here. I'm like, oh, Lauren's got like this big, broad smile. You look amazing. Oh my God. Go Google Lauren Bostic jaw surgery. Don't be intimidated. It's been a journey to get here. It has been a journey. And it's so beautiful that you've shared your journey with everybody because you'd be surprised, or you probably wouldn't be surprised, so many people are actually having the same symptoms,
Starting point is 00:59:56 but they just don't know what the actual solution is. So I've known Lauren for a very long time. And when we first got together and we would be like, share a bed or whatever, like the way that she slept and the way that she snored, I mean, it was like, you've never heard anything.
Starting point is 01:00:11 I couldn't believe it. The teeth grind would scare me in the night. And you know, I woke up to, I feel bad for myself when I was younger. Cause I would be tired. I would be taking naps every day. I haven't taken a nap since I've been mouth taping every night.
Starting point is 01:00:24 I haven't taken a nap. I have energy off taping every night. I haven't taken a nap. I have energy off my ass. But I remember in the beginning when we got together, I like could not believe that she could snore this way and grind her teeth. It was unbelievable to me. And then she would be so tired all day long. And now after all these years and learning all the things that we've learned or having the jaw surgery, I imagine there's so many people that have this symptom and they just don't even realize that this is it. And I imagine there's also a lot of men and women that are thinking like, okay, aesthetically, I need to do all these things, but it doesn't address all these other things. And to your point earlier, if you're not sleeping well and eating well, and even I was thinking, even the way we exercise,
Starting point is 01:01:01 if you're not breathing properly in that exercise, it's so difficult to make progress. What is your personal thoughts on plastic surgery of the face? I say people will do what makes them feel better, but they're doing the best with what they're aware is available to them. And I'm just trying to say, whatever flaws you're seeing or noticing in your face, you can address that and evoke a structural improvement that will remove the flaws, diminish the flaws and give health benefits. And make you be, like you said, your best genetic makeup, your superior. Or even say like this, like I was thinking about this scenario as you were talking earlier, say somebody does what we're talking about here and does palate expansion,
Starting point is 01:01:42 but they've done it after they've gotten all these surgeries and chin implants like if their jaw then moves wouldn't their chin also now be jutting forward could that do you know what i'm saying like she's saying like the chin implant would change the position so you go to fix the actual physiological problem and then later but you've done this stuff aesthetically i think i want to caution people to like maybe do this stuff first because then your whole jaw structure is going to look differently. Absolutely. And it's not just plumping up one section and leaving eye sockets narrow or the nose profile pulling back or the teeth in. It's addressing the whole face. Everything harmonizes when we bring it out. There's this triangle of youth. So we want the facial features to engulf as much of the facial structure as possible. Rather than having a dominant facial frame, we want this to pop off.
Starting point is 01:02:29 And as I said, I'm doing an MSC expansion, but it was a very simple device that got put in. And so it's expanded my back molars more than my front teeth. And so the next step is actually to expand more of the front of my jaw. And then I will have even more benefit. A, the jaw will come forward slightly, which is great. I had all of my wisdom teeth, all four of them taken out. That would have flattened my face. That's what I was going to ask next, because I've had mine out too. That's something they push. I don't know if they still push that
Starting point is 01:02:56 or not. They do. I was speaking to someone the other day, they're in their mid twenties and they said, Oh, I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out. And I said, please avoid doing that because it will flatten the face by a tooth width. And I mean, I don't have breathing issues. Most people can still handle not having wisdom teeth, but it's ideal to keep them. So we want someone who can guide the jaw forward to accommodate them.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Why do they do that? Do they do it now because we have this palate collapsing issue and so we don't have the room anymore to take out. But if we expanded the palate and kept them, this would be proper. I always think about this. What did they do 200 years ago with wisdom teeth? They just left them in, right? Exactly.
Starting point is 01:03:33 Well, they didn't have this problem. This is a new issue that jaws are not large enough to accommodate all of the adult teeth. Most likely, they didn't have painful wisdom teeth because the face grew properly. The problem did sort of arise when agriculture came in and we started relying on wheat, a lot of wheat dough, pasta bread to feed larger populations who are settled. Got to chew the steak. Yeah. So where I live, Biltong is making a comeback. I'm ordering Biltong. What's the brand that we get?
Starting point is 01:04:00 Oh, this is Biltong Boss back in Australia, but there's a few of them doing it now and you can order it online. They will post it to you. And because it doesn't go off quickly, I mean, as long as it's sealed, it can store there for months and months and months. I'm literally going to snack on that. I have one last question before you go. Every single morning, I do 10 to 15 to 20 minutes of facial manipulation. A lot of stretching of the fascia, a lot of lymphatic drainage. I stretch under my eyebrows. I really get in there and I do it every single morning. And I've probably done it for like a year. And I've noticed huge improvement. You mentioned earlier working out the face. Is that what you meant by that? And do you think facial
Starting point is 01:04:42 manipulation is effective? I definitely think facial manipulation is effective? I definitely think facial manipulation is a great thing. And I need to do more of this. I've learned to do this. Is this what you do? You get the fascia and you stimulate it. There's all the exercises. I'm trying to teach Michael to like, you can, I've literally lifted my eyebrow. I'm not joking. Probably five millimeters. Like I, I swear to God, like it is wild. Wow. I do it every morning. I like sculpt the jaw. I feel like you're just a person that,
Starting point is 01:05:10 I think that if you did it or you got into it, you would love it because it goes so much to what you're saying. It sounds like it's a fascia and muscle manipulation of the face. And we just neglect those muscles in that fascia. We do everything else, but we don't think about the face, especially if you're not eating hard foods in your diet. Absolutely. So many things are marketed as on the go and sucked through a straw and fast paced. We need to be chewing more to work the muscles. And I've neglected my skin. I've been so focused on the bones and muscles for so long that I'm watching people, this new craze of fascia and
Starting point is 01:05:43 people swear by it. And I understand it's this fabric of cells that needs to have, just like everything else needs impact to remodel, we need to impact the fascia. And so I 100% would believe that if you commit to that, that's going to have positive benefits for lymphatic drainage, as you say, and just keeping it more taut because any stimulation asks something to build structural integrity just by having impact placed on it. I'm going to give you some of my facial manipulation balls and you can try it. You're the perfect person to try it. I would love to.
Starting point is 01:06:16 And some mouthwash. Thank you. There's a few things we've learned on the show and sometimes people will say that we fear monger in certain scenarios. I look at it more as like getting information. But the one thing that I've, like a common theme that I've taken doing this show for so long is when people tell you things that are abnormal or normal, and there's just this new fix, this new medicine, these braces, there's that. I think we're so quick as a population now just like, oh yeah, this is a normal thing. Get your wisdom teeth out. Get your tonsils out. As a people thoughtful about why these things are happening and what the root cause is. Why do we need braces?
Starting point is 01:06:48 Why do we need wisdom teeth out? All of these things, these interventions, why do we need this medication that we never needed before? I think we've got to start asking questions about the root of things as opposed to just taking the quick fixes that people have figured out as band-aid solutions. Absolutely. We don't look back historically very far. We look at like, what did my parents do or my grandparents? And then we forget that humans before that had very different lifestyles and use their bodies in very different ways. And so we need to keep reminding people of ancestral diet or paleolithic diet and how did they use their body every day rather than a quick fix, a quick oral medication or whatever.
Starting point is 01:07:31 There's all these solutions now marketed to people that are just masking what's a deeper misalignment for them. Katrina, we will be chewing our tree sap gum from Africa and mewing all thanks to you. Where can everyone find you buy your book? You guys, I have two copies of her book.
