Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a Dear Media production. Happy holidays. Merry Christmas. It is time for candy, but the kind of candy I like has fiber in it. That is SmartSweets. We're going to get into it on this episode, but they get all nostalgic on you because they have gummy bears, pea trings, Sour Blast Buddies, and Sweetfish, but without added sugar, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. You guys can use code SKINNY15 for 15% off your order of $30 or more on smartsweets.com. All right, let's get into the show. She's a lifestyle blogger extraordinaire. Fantastic. And he's a serial entrepreneur. A very smart cookie. And now Lauren Everts and Michael Bostic are bringing you along for the
Starting point is 00:00:43 ride. Get ready for some major realness. Welcome to the Skinny Confidential. Him and her. Aha! We got the dirt. And it's never slipped once. And they know no matter what they tell us, whoever it is, it doesn't matter if you're a celebrity or not, you know. You gain that trust and then you happen to walk out looking real good and
Starting point is 00:01:05 feeling real pretty so you know it feels good yeah and we don't exploit the celebrity situation at all a couple days after christmas everyone's hung over surprise i'm not i'm dead sober i'm not feeling too good yeah i'm sure you're not feeling too good uh we got an episode for you on a friday which is always fun the entrepreneurs and stylists behind the mega brand 901 Salon are on the podcast. This has been a request from so many of you guys who are hairstylists or in the hair industry. They have really created this insane cult following. They know how to brand. They have their line in common, which I'm obsessed with their magic mist.
Starting point is 00:01:43 And they also have raindrops which is like this shower head that you screw on your shower that makes your water good for your hair I mean I'll let them explain it I'm probably flubbing it but Michael's already tried to steal mine from me there's nothing more I like than good hair Lauren you know that I gotta I gotta keep it on point we even talk about old blue in this episode which is kind of amazing if you don't know who old blue is uh old blue is a reoccurring character. Old Blue's been retired. We have to do a little funeral for him.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Anyways, we are doing a giveaway at the end of this episode, and there is some major stuff 901's giving away. But just so you guys know, I am very much into the raindrop situation. It's this showerhead, like I said, that filters your water and makes it really good for your hair. A little bit more time, everybody. A couple more days at the end of the year. We all made it. We all made it. We're all still standing. Michael feels like he's really trying to make it right now when I'm literally nine and a half months pregnant. It's been a tough nine and a half
Starting point is 00:02:36 months. I know everybody's concerned. I'll be okay, Lauren. I mean, yesterday I just was like, I'm about to pop. I'm about to roll over. And this motherfucker is talking to me about, you know, his. Well, yesterday is yesterday, Lauren. With that, everybody, let's get into the show. Let's meet Rihanna and Nicki, the two badasses behind the brand 901. This is the Skinny Confidential, him and her. Okay, so I am so excited to have you guys in the studio because I was reading an article and I felt like it really resonated with me.
Starting point is 00:03:12 You guys were saying that you waited to put your brand on anything product-wise because you wanted to be really strategic of how you rolled out a product. And I found that really interesting because I'm in the same boat right now. I don't want to just white label something and slap a label on it. I feel like I've built my brand for 10 years and like, I really want to be methodical and thoughtful about how I put something out. So can you sort of speak, I guess, on how you built the brand and then how you decided to incorporate product in that strategic way? Yeah. So I think it kind of starts back to when we first opened the salon. And at that time, 10 years ago, wow, it's been 10 years. Holy shit,
Starting point is 00:03:54 still crazy. Every salon out there was named after the owner. I'm not going to name the names. You know the names. Everyone had their name on the front door. And we worked under stylists who had their name at the front door. And we knew when we wanted to start our own company, we didn't want our name on the door. We wanted the name to literally mean nothing, like not hair beauties, nothing. And we just wanted it to like mean nothing. You either knew about it or you didn't. So we called it 901, which was just the address. And I think that alone is what allowed the brand to grow into what it was because it wasn't reliant on us. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:04:31 So like if for some reason her and I suck, the team is still amazing that can still continue the brand to go on as is. But as far as rolling into what In Common and raindrops and all that, I mean, again, it's its own entity and it has its own legs and it doesn't need to be reliant on Nikki and Rihanna to create this. We want it to have its own entity. And creating that, you just need to make sure all the boxes are checked before you actually roll out. But I think it's about really believing in it too. I think when you just white label on something you're like okay that's definitely an easier route i think i think i don't know financially probably better too but we are so passionate
Starting point is 00:05:16 about what we put out that you know you're proud of it and it's a lot of work from the ground up but it's worth it well it's smart i mean i think a lot of people in this day and age they get their ego involved and they think okay this is i've built this personal brand and so now everyone needs to go under me and like what they what they forget to take into account is everybody else is building their personal brand too and you don't want to attach your brand to somebody else's personal it's the same thing with your media right like it had to be bigger than than lauren and me it's actually not dependent on us at all right right it speaks to everybody or you know anybody or anybody that's associated with it.
Starting point is 00:05:47 And I think that unless you're Ralph Lauren and you can actually create Ralph Lauren style in a whole category, and that's an extreme outlier. Right. It's smarter to make things
Starting point is 00:05:54 bigger than you. Absolutely. And that's the plan. What are some other things that you guys have done to stand out in the space that are different? Don't you have a beauty school online?
Starting point is 00:06:02 We do. Yeah. We have a ton of education. So Rihanna and I are problem solvers. Well think we are yeah we think we are whenever there's a problem we're like we got to solve this like how do we make this better like with in common like people's hair breaking we're like this is crazy like people need to have healthy hair like what the fuck so with education it was like these classes where they would do these like avant-garde, like weird bobs and weird colors. And it just wasn't relatable or prettier things that clients were asking for.
Starting point is 00:06:34 So there was like a lack of inspiration for stylists who want to do long, beautiful, blonde hair or whatever. Pretty hair. So we started doing classes. People travel from out of state and they come to our academy at 901 westbourne and we just accept 10 people per class and it's hands-on so they work on live models which is a big deal because a lot of classes they make you use a doll head which is like you're not really learning. And then, you know, people can't always afford that. So then we rolled into the online education
Starting point is 00:07:08 through our beauty coach course. And each week there's a new episode that comes out. We have guest artists that come and teach too. And, you know, we just keep solving problems. Well, what I think you guys have done really well too is that you can recognize a 901 girl. There is, I call it, I made up this name Tani would curl my hair and I call it the vertical curl okay yeah so it's like it's not a curly
Starting point is 00:07:31 Sue curl or as my friend Jackie Schimmel would say a JonBenet Ramsey curl it's um it's more of a soft long vertical curl yeah and I think when you see girls you know that that's a 901 girl so was that part of the plan to like brand the clients almost no no honestly like we got on Instagram early on not really knowing what it could do for us and we just started posting we have so many like gorgeous clients and we just started posting them and yeah just many gorgeous clients. And we just started posting them. And yeah, just kind of morphed into that. And people were like, I want to be a 901 girl. And we're like, you do?
Starting point is 00:08:12 Sweet. That's cool. I love that. And the gray wall that you have. The gray wall. The gray wall. Which is, by the way, just outside. I mean, you know, it's just outside.
Starting point is 00:08:19 It's our building. Everyone knows. So if someone's at home and they're, let's say they're in Minnesota and they want to do the vertical curl themselves, how would you walk them through it? I think by this time they know how to do it. You can't assume. We can't assume. Walk them through it.
Starting point is 00:08:34 You can't assume. I have no clue how to do it. See, he wants to know. He wants to do it to his pubes tonight. Yes. With old blue. With old blue. With new red.
Starting point is 00:08:44 I don't know. It's got really scratchy with your red can paste that you bought 8 000 bottles because you thought someone was gonna i have to be their best customer just give me stock in that company that's amazing hey we know people over there so we'll let them know tell them yeah the vertical curl is basically what when you're curling your hair and you're not allowing the curling iron to turn horizontal right you're keeping that curling iron vertical at all times i can definitely show all of you at home right now but you can't see me or can you well no well you could show it when this episode
Starting point is 00:09:16 goes live maybe you show it on your instagram story but the curling iron is parallel to your face correct as opposed to perpendicular right so that's all you do you just hold it to your face and hold the girl don't do that you'll burn your hair off like that girl you should see me doing my own hair bleak let me ask you both this i want to get some context here how did you two first get connected like we got to go back we got to go way back because if you told me it's 10 years in the salon did you guys know each other before that oh yeah okay let's go back let's let's get the story take them back i want to know everything 10 years at 901 three years at ken pavis salon almost a year and a half at kush salon and all the way back to 15 years ago where we were assistants together at fred siegel beauty in santa monica and where'd you both grow up she grew up in re Reno, Nevada. Reno? Yeah. I grew up in Oxnard, California.
Starting point is 00:10:06 And we had a lot of similarities back then. And we learned that early on and we clicked like right away. What do you think some of those similarities are? Oh, you know, we were cheerleaders growing up. Things that we probably can't talk about on this podcast. We should be happy about this. Anything. Well, it's like family things, you know.
Starting point is 00:10:23 That were similar. Yeah. Yep, that was similar. Just a similar know similar yeah yeah that was similar just a similar situation was similar yeah similar hustlers you know like always just figuring it out yeah yeah we clicked very early on which is pretty cool so how do you guys make it work now that you're working together is there any issue or is it easy because i know with michael it's been a lot of challenges well see i mean it's been a dream you guys also live together i don't have to go home with her if i had to go home with her too i mean that'd be rough it'd be dreamy what are you talking about oh my god oh my god among other things hopefully oh do you know how much shit would we get done if we live together we'd get so much
Starting point is 00:11:06 we'd probably open up more businesses that's true because you know you can't get away you can't get away yeah what are some challenges that you guys have had working together as friends the thing that really stuck out to us when we were working together in the beginning of 901 it was probably into year three where we're 50 50 like. We do everything, right? We go to every meeting together. We go at every party together. We network together. We do everything together because we are 50-50 into this company. About year three, we figured out that's not the way to go. The way to go is, hey, Rihanna, what do you do best? Write down what you do best, okay, or what you enjoy doing. I wrote it down. She writes down what she enjoys and what she does best. And oddly enough,
Starting point is 00:11:45 it was yin and yang. And instead of me falling asleep at the lawyer accountant's meeting, she's over here killing it and I don't have to go to the meeting anymore. And instead of her dreading to go out to this event that we should go to and network,
Starting point is 00:11:58 she stays at home and I go out and network. We figured out what we were good at. You sound more like me. Yeah. We figured out what we were good at and we let each other flourish on that instead of making each other do everything 50 50 that was like a huge light bulb for us it's super smart and that probably helped our friendship a lot too that is really really smart to double down on your strengths we call it defining the roles like
Starting point is 00:12:20 there's you know we have our sides of the street both of us and yeah we don't cross well luckily you guys figured it out because we didn't for three years well a lot of business partners don't and their businesses shut down so you guys have so many celebrity clients like when you go in there you see someone and you guys have i think have done a really good job about you know sometimes people are like pushy with the celebrities you guys have just you're mellow you give them a safe space i feel like that's it so why do you think you like gathered such a big celebrity following is it just because the talent you think it's because you give them the safe space and a medley a medley it's both i like the medley word i haven't used
Starting point is 00:12:53 that word in a very long time i'm going to start using it medley and i think trust for sure we could write books about things that we know really good really good books people tell people cutting their hair yeah we got we got the dirt and it's never slipped once and they know no matter what they tell us whoever it is it doesn't matter if you're a celebrity or not you know you gain that trust and then you happen to walk out looking real good and feeling real pretty so you know it feels good yeah and we don't exploit the celebrity situation at all we i don't even know how to call the paparazzi i'm sure i could fucking google it but i don't even know how and google there's no somehow alfred's really got him lined up so people come in like i don't
Starting point is 00:13:36 really know but yeah we've never exploited them that way and and don't force someone to take a picture on that gray wall if they don't want to usually at this point in time it's like oh i feel good let's go take a picture they're ready to take pictures they want to take a picture which is cool but yeah trust and and they're people just like us they really are when it comes down what are the trends that you're seeing that celebrities are going towards right now yeah hmm where are we in we're coming into i know you just did taylor swiss lover album yeah Which is so major. That was so cool. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:14:07 First time she ever did any color like that. So it was pretty rad. It was pretty cool. I mean, that was amazing. We'll do it. Yeah. It was funny because when we first did it, we did it too pretty. I did it that day on set.
Starting point is 00:14:18 And it was too pretty. She's like, no, this is too pretty. Like, let's make it a little more edgier, a little more like, you know, grunge. And I'm like, all right. And here we go. Taylor Swift grunge. I know. cool though she wanted to like switch it up and just make it a little more fucked up in a good way so the dip die so is that though is that the trend like a little bit more grunge dude well i feel like with the celebrity girls it's tough because the trend ends up being what they're working on. True. So whatever movie they're working on or whatever project, they kind of set the trend based on that.
Starting point is 00:14:52 So we kind of have to go off that. I mean, every once in a while they have some downtime so they can play around. And I feel like they always want to do fun colors when they have a little downtime. But yeah, like Emma Roberts. I mean, she's constantly shooting brown, blonde. Now we got to go red, you know, whatever it is. So it just kind of happens that way too, depending on what they're working on.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Hold up. We got to talk about smart sweets. If you are a listener of the Skinny Confidential, him and her show, and you have not tried smart sweets, you are missing out. You're missing out so much that Michael and I are even adding smartets to each gift that we've wrapped.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Like we're putting them on top under the bow because we know everyone needs to try them. If you've gotten a package from a team member in the mail, like a giveaway, you know we even add them to the giveaways. They have gummy bears, pea trings,
Starting point is 00:15:40 Sour Blast Buddies, and Sweetfish, but without all the nasty rat added sugar, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. I do that combination where it's like one for you, one for me, every time we put it. So if I put in your stocking stuffer, I'm also stuffing myself with them. Peach rings. I'm big on the peach rings. Big on the peach rings. We're stuffing our family's stocking this year with tongue scrapers and SmartSweets. That's the way to go. While I'm also stuffing my face with SmartS Sweets. But you're scraping your tongue afterwards.
Starting point is 00:16:06 So that's good. I first heard about Smart Sweets about a year ago. I fell in love with them because they were candy and they taste just like all the nostalgic candy, but they're full of fiber. So you get all this fiber. And like I said, it doesn't have all this added sugar. Then I started bringing them in my purse
Starting point is 00:16:23 into the movie theaters and Michael started eating them. I mean, if you're going to go and you've got to get your fiber in, which is not always the easiest thing to do, you may as well do it with some Sour Blast buddies, you know, maybe some peach rings. Get your family some peach rings, put them on top of your gifts. They make the cutest little addition. They're bright Instagrammy colors. Everything is so Instagrammy. I love them so much that i even invited the founder on the show i want to talk to her about how she did such an amazing job with branding and marketing and making these candies sour blast buddies try to say that three times the tongue twister they're good all right you can use code skinny 15 for 15 off your order of 30 or more on smartsweets.com i would
Starting point is 00:17:01 recommend buying a lot so you can put them on top of your presents. Everyone will be eating them. You can't go wrong. They ship to the continental USA and Canada. That's skinny 15 for 15% off your order of $30 or more on smartsweets.com. And now it's time to get back into the show. Okay, here's my question that I always wonder and some of my friends say it's just a wig. But how do these celebrities go from these drastic colors and still maintain the integrity of their hair? Right here, baby. You're looking at me.
Starting point is 00:17:31 You're looking at her. What's the tip though? If someone lives in Florida and they don't have access to you, what can they do? Do it in a few days. Yeah. Like don't try to tackle it in one day the problem
Starting point is 00:17:46 for me is that these girls are on tight schedules so they only give me a day so if i can't complete what i gotta complete in a day i'm screwed right so if they have to go from brunette to blonde i mean i just i gotta make it happen we took selena when she went that really blonde and short blonde took us what 10 hours yeah oh my god together together at the same time tag team at the same time it was like olaplex the answer like besides that like is there any like really good tips that you could give someone besides just waiting or is it really just time well good news remember we're problem solvers yeah so we came out with something love it is called crystal cashmere that literally restores hair in one
Starting point is 00:18:33 treatment the more fucked up your hair is the better the results will be no joke crystal cashmere it's a two-step process you put an oil on first you let it sit anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes you rinse that oil on you put the cream on you let it sit 15 to 30 minutes depending on your hair and that's it and you reconstruct have we not done that on you yet i don't think so i think we didn't come today yeah i need that right now yeah just go get some crystal cash yeah i need that right now you can i need that right now you really can for sure yeah and after this is all my hair by the way yeah i was looking at your hair i was like is that extensions no that's all your hair baby hair for being pregnant like for the last two years it felt okay i need to come in and get some fucking crystal cash on my hair immediately so the woman in
Starting point is 00:19:22 florida tell her hairstylist let's go platinum blonde but i need you to do crystal cashmere on me and it'll make it a lot better oh million times better it's incredible i can't wait to do it anyway okay what about wigs wigs are another great easy way to do you like wigs i did a wig for halloween yeah and i loved it yeah i wanted to leave it on forever remember when you did the wig when we did Sexy Stranger? Yeah, we did Sexy Stranger. Do you know what? We went to the worst place. Where did we go?
Starting point is 00:19:49 What's it called again? No, it's not the worst place. Yes, it was for Sexy Stranger. It's not good for Sexy Stranger. Giorgio Baldi. You know, it's all the way in. Santa Monica. No, it's like Malibu type area.
Starting point is 00:19:58 But the tables are this close. So we're sitting next to another couple, like closer than we are. Yeah. But we're both in Sexy Stranger. I was like in a cowboy and she was so boring he wore like a bra and it was not like you're supposed to go to the bar and like pick her up right but we're like sitting at a nice candle at dinner with a bunch of people like dressed as freaks that's amazing the funniest thing is i was pregnant then and didn't know it and i was dressed as avanka who was a working girl from russia and there's a lot going on so two people there was like very elderly couples on our left and right
Starting point is 00:20:32 and we were just anyways i did a wig that night and the wig was great yeah yeah and also i was asking a friend i was like how do the kardashians get their hair so it's so in front of their forehead do you know what i'm talking about or do i sound crazy not not at all is this is this like clip-ins or is it glue what's happening there i mean there's a couple things it could be a wig it could be a piece it could be a spray color to just fill in all the scalp to make it you know darker it could be eyeshadow you can take eyeshadow and fill in areas to make it darker joan rivers could be eyeshadow you can take eyeshadow and fill in areas to make it darker joan rivers has an eyeshadow which i think should be your next you should do a
Starting point is 00:21:09 a 901 i hair shadow hair shadow yeah i would wear it definitely joan rivers has this one that i bought before to fill in the ponytail a little bit michael's like what the fuck are you talking okay so i just i want to call you guys out on something that you do really well and that is training you guys are so gnarly when it comes to training your employees like you know that you know this I saw how Tani had an assistant I know she told me that she assisted for you guys for a really long time before she branched off on her own you've done a really good job I think with building a team which is sometimes I struggle with that Michael's very good at it do you have any like tips on how you laid that out to work so seamlessly well step one is you can always teach someone how to cut and color hair
Starting point is 00:21:56 but you can't teach someone how to be a good person hands down so no matter what business you're in step one are they a good human being Because mom and dad has to do a pretty good job in order for you to work at 901. Kind, have the same core values, helping each other's teamwork. You know, that is number one for us. And I think with that being said, you can take everything else to like the next level, you know. But the actual training part of it you know who's hardcore is rihanna she's the mean one i'm the nice one so i'm more of the nurturer where i'm like okay well let's go through it like this and she's like what do you wear do not come
Starting point is 00:22:37 to work wearing that you need to dress the part we're on melrose place going on which is great because they do need to be told and i'm glad i don't have to do that i mean i need a little more of you i'm a little bit more nurturing i think as well but i think i explain why it's not i don't ever just like be a dick and it's like guard you know they're like i think it's good to set the standard like this is the standard of whatever shop or business you're running and like as long as you've explained the standard it's not it's not a negative thing exactly what you want for your business and more importantly you got to lead by example so if i want you to come in with your hair and makeup done every day i need to come in with my hair and makeup done every day if i need to look the part every day you gotta look
Starting point is 00:23:19 the part every day you know what i mean yeah super important i mean so many leaders they want to lead from the back you gotta lead from the front you gotta lead from the front Michael's thing is leading from the front he's very very into that well you can't ask people to do things if you're not willing to do them yourself
Starting point is 00:23:30 exactly 100% what are the requirements to become a stylist at your salon it's not a joke it's not a joke yeah it's not a joke
Starting point is 00:23:37 it's not a joke is there like an apprentice period I think like the program like how long does it take yeah I mean everyone's different so if you come on
Starting point is 00:23:44 and you're an assistant first you assist anywhere from two to four years total that's a long time it just depends you know i think tani assisted for she sits with me i think for like two two and a half years but then prior she's a little longer yeah yeah but here's the thing they go on the floor these kids haven't made they're making bank yeah they have a clientele they can tackle anything no matter what client sits in their chair they either one know how to do the color and the cut or to handle their shitty personality per se if they're mad at their hair when it's really their life you know what i mean but those are the things
Starting point is 00:24:21 that we try to teach when they actually come to us. And we prefer to grow within. I mean, we've hired some stylists, some outside stylists. Some have worked, some haven't. Because, you know, some people are just to the beat of their own drum and they don't fit in the family and that's fine. It's okay. To me, two to four years does not sound like a long time to acquire a lifelong skill from experts. Right? That sounds like very reasonable. No, you're right. It's not.
Starting point is 00:24:45 And you're right it's not and you're right when you think about a hair stylist or beauty school dropout and like stuff like that I think that's when you're like oh shit two to four years you know that's where
Starting point is 00:24:52 I think things get like well I think if you want to work in a prestigious salon like yours where you're having the best clients in the world come in like there has to be a certain standard
Starting point is 00:24:58 and people should be willing to work for it or they don't have to and listen it doesn't have to be two to four years if you're fucking amazing and we see that we're ready to like bring you up faster and make things happen it's not like you have to be this amount of time but it ends up being that time that amount of
Starting point is 00:25:15 time it's not just about you know learning the skill of doing hair we teach them how to run their business you know how to deal with certain clients and not even crazy clients like you guys had caroline stransberry in here right she's my client and she's hilarious but like teaching them what she needs yeah you never know what you're gonna get you know so just you know customer service is huge for us like whatever they need just get it what if you have an asshole client because i know that i'm sure you do in la have a couple assholes for sure a lot of faces right now they're putting both have thumbs up what do you about that black we personally don't have any asshole clients but there's some that have come to the salon for sure and
Starting point is 00:26:01 and are now blacklisted yeah they're just a headache and they want to complain over stuff and it's like they try to get money back when their hair looks amazing rihanna's all oh really your hair is green well the wall's green too so you photoshopped your picture and the girl never came back again like don't try to hustle a hustler girl oh okay people go to that kind of it's not cheap they're not staying in their financial lane you know they want to be a Ooh, okay. That was true. People go to that kind of trouble. That's kind of cheap. Because it's not cheap as well. They're not staying in their financial lane. You know, they want to be a 901 girl. Well, that comes with a cost, right?
Starting point is 00:26:33 So they're just trying to get in, which sounds crazy that that's even a thing. But like, then they want to like dispute charges. And we're like, no, no, no. You can't do that. Everyone who walks out of your salon looks fucking amazing let's be honest so i'm really interested in hearing about this thing that you put on your shower okay so i want to know why you invented it and what it does and why someone needs to put this on the shower head because it's very intriguing to me so the honest to God truth is that when we worked for Ken Paves, I went to New York and spent a week there helping him launch one of his brands.
Starting point is 00:27:13 And I was working in the Henry Bendel's window. I mean, could you just imagine me like doing hair right in the window? Anyhow, I came back and everyone's like, oh, you colored your hair brown. I'm like, huh? Literally because of the water in New york my blonde hair turned brown so we're like oh my god this is terrible like there's got to be like a shower something but what was it like why does it do that because the water there's a build-up of so many minerals or old pipes a lot of the buildings in new york are from the 1800s and have old pipes that who knows when they've changed.
Starting point is 00:27:46 And it makes your hair dry, brittle, brassy, can make it brown, depending on whatever's in the pipes. And then we started noticing our clients here in LA. We're like, what the fuck? Like, I just made you so bright blonde. Like, why when you come back, is it so dingy? So we're like, aha aha we had an aha moment and so we researched shower filters there was one available it was jonathan anton had one that was sold at sephora but it looked like a thermos like it was hideous and with our high-end clientele they're like oh my husband just remodeled the bathroom there's no way he's gonna put that in there okay so we're like okay so i'm talking about it and my husband's friend
Starting point is 00:28:30 who happens to be chinese his aunt owns a water filtration company in china and he's like let me just have her send over some stuff whatever we checked it out we loved it we figured out a situation with her and created raindrops was born so when i take this home because you guys gifted me one i can't wait to try michael first of all don't even think about going in my shower okay i want to see what it's like because no the key to marriage is two separate bathrooms and one so many people have said yeah and and he's been in my bathroom he's like spreading lamere on his legs last night yeah he's like that's expensive you're like using the gel on your elbows and like like this is an exaggeration if i get a paper cut my wife will call my mom and be like his arm is gone
Starting point is 00:29:16 i used her lamere once or twice because it was there and and listen i'm gonna use this thing the funny thing is about lamere is when he gets in the bed he thinks he's like in on the secret and he got it but it has such a unique smell and i'm like what the fuck are you doing pregnancy knows is a real thing you can smell everything like she knows if i make one false move yeah don't fuck around with me i i say you should never cheat on a pregnant person because they can smell it and they're clairvoyant but that's a different podcast um so if i put this in my shower i I feel like he's going to try to sneak in. What is it going to look like when I put it on? Is it cute?
Starting point is 00:29:50 Open it. Pull the ribbon and pull those slots out. I'm wondering if you can actually install it or if I'm going to have to be the one to install it. You know what? That's a great question. And then I'll be able to. She definitely can install it. We provide you with a shower head, but you can use your own.
Starting point is 00:30:03 Okay. And that's the filter. Yeah. Let me see. So you can use your own. Okay. And that's the filter. Yeah. Let me see. So you can attach your own shower head to that. This is genius. Dreamy, right? Yeah, this is genius.
Starting point is 00:30:11 This fills up over time and you have to change it? Yeah. This is a great Christmas gift, too. It is a great Christmas gift. Yeah, this is a really good Christmas gift. I feel like we should get this for all the girls in your family. See, the best inventions come out of necessity with people that are actually trying to figure things out. Totally.
Starting point is 00:30:27 They've done that. And your Magic Mist is something that's the only hair product that I've been using every single day. Same. Me too. I use that in the DP Hue Apple Cider Vinegar Spray. You'll use it on your daughter too. I will?
Starting point is 00:30:39 My daughter loves it. It smells so good. It's so good. Michael said I smell like seventh grade, which if we dated in seventh grade, he loves seventh grade. That's what you always michael said i smell like seventh grade which if we dated in seventh grade he loves seventh grade oh that's what you always tell me i smell like seventh grade this is a nostalgic smell yeah what am i in for with a daughter here my daughter's awesome i mean she's so much fun for me i had all these ideas i was like real
Starting point is 00:31:00 worried it's tough like she thought it was a boy at first like okay i'm gonna raise this tough boy and then if that was a girl i'm going to be the biggest softie oh for sure she's going to hate me because I'm just going to spoil the little girl yeah so my daughter's name is Parker
Starting point is 00:31:11 and her thing right now so she's 19 months you guys I'm in it two under two is like real wow and her thing she loves to dance
Starting point is 00:31:20 so she goes daddy dance and she puts out her hands and then i like dance and it's so sweet she does whatever she oh for sure i do whatever she says for me to do yeah and rihanna doesn't even like kids i don't really like it but i love your kid you know yeah i get that too i i wasn't the most maternal person i still am not you you will be really yeah and
Starting point is 00:31:44 listen right before the baby you're're going to wake up panicking. I don't know what the fuck to do. I was like that. And then all of a sudden, they're just here and you just know. It's weird. You just figure it out. It's like an animal. They just know.
Starting point is 00:31:59 No, you really will know. You're an animal. I promise you. You can even call me. I keep telling myself, people have done this before. It's true. You know? And you guys are smart yeah so then you got pregnant again accidentally yeah we weren't trying we're trying and so surprise surprise that scares me a little bit
Starting point is 00:32:16 because yes how come everyone gets pregnant right after they give birth you're so crazy you better get that penis away from me yeah that is scary though because if you're just like okay you try to plan it and then it's just crazy well your doctor will recommend putting you on the pill i was like no it took me four years to get pregnant with my daughter and i had to do ivf i'm not getting on the pill wait i don't want to go on the pill because it gives you melasma and it makes you gain weight i feel like so it's like you just got done being pregnant women have to do everything. You literally have to sit there.
Starting point is 00:32:46 One night of margaritas and we could be back in it. You're just going to be your meat and finish your thing. Be careful. Be careful, guys. Yeah. Fertile mortal. I've heard that from so many people. That's true.
Starting point is 00:32:56 And what was your experience with breastfeeding and all that? Because I don't know what I'm going to do yet. Hold on one second. I've got to use the restroom. I'll be right back. Oh, he has to use the restroom again? I mean, literally, he just spent the night the other night at our house, you guys,
Starting point is 00:33:10 and he clogged the toilet. And he didn't use Poo-Pourri, and we have it in every bathroom. We have it in every bathroom, and Taylor couldn't even lift his finger to use Poo-Pourri. If you guys have a friend like Taylor that comes over to your house and clogs your toilet and makes the bathroom just smell rancid, then you need poopery. In fact, you need poopery
Starting point is 00:33:30 even if you don't have that friend. Everyone should have it in every bathroom. Maybe it's you. If you're wondering, do I have that friend and you can't think about it? Maybe it's you. You know that old thing if you like you got to find the sucker at the poker table and then it's you. Yeah, it might be you. Poopery is taking the stink out of the thing we all do. And by talking about it, by doing it, and by transforming it from a crappy experience, literally, into a positive one. Thank God for Poo-pourri because when Taylor clogged that toilet, I was in there with Poo-pourri's pink citron, spraying it high, spraying it low, spraying it under the toilet, spraying it in the toilet,
Starting point is 00:34:00 and it works. Like, let me tell you, it works. It's a blend of strawberry, citronron and rock candy that will leave your bathroom smelling like cotton candy i'm telling you your guests will think you shit candy guys there's no downside to this there's only an upside you guys want to you want to know how lauren and i keep it spicy well this is one of the key components you're in it listen doesn't matter friendship relationship intimate relationship add poopery to the mix and protect all of it right like nobody needs to be heading in there after you do your business and experiencing what you leave behind. I'll just be honest. No one wants to smell the smell of shit.
Starting point is 00:34:31 People want to smell rock candy and cotton candy. And that's what Poo-Pourri does for you. And again, if you have a friend like Taylor, you need this. You need this in every bathroom. I'm just saying. You guys, listen, put them in your house, put them in every bathroom, carry them to the office, do whatever you got to do. Don't end up in a situation like we did when your producer comes over to your house or your friend or whoever and just demolishes it.
Starting point is 00:34:50 This is why we have it right there. Hard, hard to miss. With that, go to PooPourri.com and use code TSC20 for 20% off your purchase of $25 or more. That's P-O-O-P-O-U-R-R-I.com and code Tsc20 for 20 off your purchase of 25 or more and let's all pray that taylor's in the bathroom using his poopery because if he's not he's gonna lose friends i wasn't one way or the other i was like it's either gonna work or it's not and i'm not gonna fucking stress about it i think people put too much pressure on themselves and like honestly there's so many great formulas out there. I'm not against formula.
Starting point is 00:35:26 My milk happened to come in at the hospital. My daughter latched on. It was a very natural thing for us. And it was the only natural thing for us because, like I said, I had to do IVF and whatever. So I actually did breastfeed her for six months, which was not a goal. I wasn't trying to be a hero. It just worked out. If it's tough, you can go on formula. Like I'm not, it's just do whatever works for you. You know,
Starting point is 00:35:51 was IVF a whole journey? Yeah. It's gnarly. It's not. That was actually the easiest part. It was all the stuff prior, like using Clomid and doing IUIs. It was just like, what is that? What's Clomid? It's just like a drug you take to help you ovulate. And it was just like what is that what's plumet it's just a like a drug you take to help you ovulate it was just it was a very long journey for us well then i'm so happy now you have to be careful what you wish maybe you'll have three no no no my husband's getting fixed oh he's getting fixed right away yeah he's getting snipped i'm making him get snipped i can't wait till the day did you know that chris did you hear listen up i mean he knows really painful you know what i don't give a fuck are you fucking kidding me let me are you fucking kidding me i'm sitting here with fucking cankles i feel a billion
Starting point is 00:36:36 pounds like i'm wearing a fat suit my areolas are on the floor after i just got a boob job i have pregnancy mask i don't give a fuck if it really hurts for two minutes i literally the fucks that i get are so empty in this barrel all right all right i did a misstep pull it back i'm gonna turn switch directions but um yeah i just heard that's what i told chris when he said eight and a half months ago it happened to my dad got one they said it wasn't like you guys can talk about the two minutes of pain that you've experienced as well but i'm not it's not nine months a while but it's as well i'd love to see you squeeze a human out of your penis hole i know people that have done it and then then the wife changes her mind and then he
Starting point is 00:37:16 has to get reversed maybe i might do that that sounds nice let's throw in a theatric or two yeah yeah and by the way if your birth plan if you have one i didn't really have one doesn't go as planned and you end up having a c-section it's fine that's how i'm i have no expectation i had a c-section it's fine now i'm doing a scheduled one yay for me moving on so i think people like scare you and they're like oh my god a c-section so it is what it is and you just deal with it and it's fine i'm going with the flow yeah people have people have done it before okay switching gears to social media because i want everyone to follow you guys what is the strategy on instagram because you guys have done it better than a lot of other salons there's a strategy there i mean
Starting point is 00:37:59 it's not like you guys just slap a pickup this is very true this is very true i mean there's many strategies to anything how i think everyone's instagram you line them up and shouldn't do two blondes together if you can't or you know do two different types of waves if possible short then a long you know extensions versus a cut you know just kind of you have to be creative though yeah you do right like and i think if you're not because i'm not you know for dear media that's not true you're creative not in that way and i think if you're not you have to be self-aware enough like i need to bring somebody on who is like you guys both seem very creative so it doesn't seem like it's gonna be an issue but for someone like me or a lot of other business operators that aren't creative like bring somebody on dude bring
Starting point is 00:38:38 somebody on especially like it's a lot of work and especially now i mean when instagram started what was it 2011 i think so we started back then of course her and i were doing i'm like oh it's a lot of work and especially now i mean when instagram started what was it 2011 i think so we started back then of course her and i were doing i'm like oh it's your turn she's like oh it's your turn oh it's your turn we had to take turns doing it and then finally we're just like we had our friends start doing it and that was helpful and then we're like okay well now we need to grow it more so we finally got a social media company and you guys have your own personal instagrams too which i think is really smart you each have your own personal Instagrams too, which I think is really smart. You each have your own and you're getting married. Are you so excited?
Starting point is 00:39:07 You know what? There's a lot that goes into a wedding that I didn't realize. I never dreamt of my wedding day or anything like that. So I never had any expectations. But I have to say, it's like I'm literally talking with a smile into the microphone. With so much that's going on with work and all 87 businesses that we have, when I get to like sit down and like work on the wedding, I'm so happy. It's like fun.
Starting point is 00:39:34 It's exciting. I get to pick what we want to do. And like, I like it. Where are you getting married? In Mexico over near Tulum. Oh, we got married in Mexico. It's the best. It's so good.
Starting point is 00:39:46 And we just said to everyone, if you can go, great. And if you can't go, you can take us to lunch. Yeah. And there's 50 people. Oh, you did? Easy. Yeah. It was just like a weekend of just.
Starting point is 00:39:57 That's dreamy. A lot of drinking. Yeah. A lot of partying. Getting married is fun. People put such like an expectation on it. It's kind of like birth like there's such expectation if you go into it without expectation absolutely and you just have
Starting point is 00:40:10 fun and you know you gotta go into life without expectations you gotta go into friendships without expectations you have to go into relationships obviously you have your standards and you won't accept people treating you shitty or whatnot but like i think that's where so many of us we have these expectations of anything how my business supposed to go what i'm supposed to get on instagram or whatever and that's when you get all funky inside is because your expectations weren't met for whatever you gotta just go with the flow sound like a fucking hippie but like it's true you create something that's not real and go with the flow get there and you're like
Starting point is 00:40:42 disappointed yeah absolutely i agree with you yeah so leave our audience with three hair tips it could be anything and it could like be anything from putting castor oil on your hair or just like three unique beauty tips that they can do at home for your hair use the same comb for 20 years number one thing, ladies and gentlemen, put down the flat iron. It is the devil. It is frying your hair. Put it away for a year. Try it and your hair will grow long. That's a good one.
Starting point is 00:41:15 That's actually a really good one. Put down the flat iron. Put down the flat iron. Try it out. I challenge you all. Yeah, that's good. What else? I'm not trying to promote our shit, but I have to say, dude, Magic Mist is fucking magical.
Starting point is 00:41:28 It really is. If you do need to blow your hair out, you can prep your hair with Magic Mist and protect from heat. It detangles, it adds shine. It's just amazing. But my favorite little tip, I wish I can give all your viewers a Magic Mist. That would be great. Maybe we can come up with a code or something. We can do a code and we can maybe do a little giveaway yeah we have to because okay so this is my favorite thing that i figured out with magic mitts i call
Starting point is 00:41:53 it the triple layer so you are in the shower and you should actually try this on your hair too okay triple layer oh yeah so in the shower you do your host system. We have a beautiful, amazing treatment line system. Try it. Check it out. Out of the shower, get your hair out of the towel. Put magic mist all over. When it's about 50% dry, do another layer of magic mist and scrunch your hair. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:16 And then when it's completely dry, do the full layer all over. Scrunch the third layer and scrunch it. You will have the best natural beachy waves that are healthy shiny and textured and soft it's so dreamy and you don't have to use any heat on your hair that wasn't a quick tip i'm sorry it's such a good one i have to share with the world what was it what's the third the third one you know what i love is the sunglass trick that's my favorite what's that track dude you want volume in your bangs all you got to do is when you get out of shower put your sunglasses on and push it forward and walk around and go get your coffee and then your hair dries like that and then but you have to have
Starting point is 00:42:52 bangs right no no no no like you're all your hair if you want that whole front be careful michael will be walking around the fucking house tomorrow with sunglasses on i can't wait he already has a bouffant that's perfectly coiffed in the best volume so i think we're okay with michael a bouffant that's perfectly coiffed in the best volume. So I think we're okay with Michael. A bouffant. Holy shit. That's good. Bouffant. You know what? I almost wore a hat today.
Starting point is 00:43:12 But then I was like, I gotta go. Yeah, good for you. I'm proud of you. We appreciate that. I appreciate that so much. Well, I figured I would be talking about hair a lot.
Starting point is 00:43:18 This one's got a beanie on, but it's okay, sis. Listen, I get it. We need some help. You're coming in for crystal cashmere. I need some crystal cashmere. This week. Starting point is 00:44:20 We got to drop the nine oh one. I was very excited about that. That was this year, Nick. Just okay. You must have been pregnant. Pregnancy brain. It's a real thing. And then also at Incommon.
Starting point is 00:44:30 Super simple. It used to be at Incommon Beauty. We dropped the beauty and we just got Incommon. That's the magic mist. That's the magic mist. Magic, magic love. I'm obsessed with that. And the last thing we didn't even talk about too much, but it's kind of awesome.
Starting point is 00:44:41 It's not kind of. It's very fucking awesome. We have a charity. We have a beautiful foundation where people can donate their hair. You can donate your old extensions when you take them out, your old clip-ons. And we can put them on hats for little kids that lose their hair from cancer and don't really have the money to afford a full wig. And we can give them hats with hair and we are in the process of making a good handful of wigs to be able to give away to kids that don't have any hair that is amazing Michael we're gonna shave your head for that let's grow it out your hair would really
Starting point is 00:45:17 you know what I have a really awkwardly small weird head and I would look terrible but I can cut a lot of it off but I don't want to cut all of it off. Okay. You're going to make me look bad in front of the charities. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fuck. I was just like, what a dick. How do people find your charity?
Starting point is 00:45:32 It's at beautiful underscore foundation, and you spell beautiful B-E-Y-O-U-I-T-F-U-L. I love it. Yeah, you're right. Sometimes I really fuck up with spelling.
