Starting point is 00:00:00 Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis. Minneapolis, Chicago, you like this type of shit? You like party rock music played by your favorite band, the Sloppy Boys. St. Louis, Blueberry Hill Duck Room, July 25th.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Mnibonapolis, Zora Darling, July 22nd. Chicago, on July 23rd, we're playing I-O-Fest at the Improb Olympic. You gotta be there. Get the tickets online. Check us out on our socials, Instagram, everywhere else. You get the tickets. You come to the show. You're going to have a hell of a time, baby.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Woo! Hey, folks, welcome to the sloppy boys where we take a deep dive into the drinks that you love. I'm Jeff Dutton along with Mike Hanford. And Tim Calpaccus? What is up? 300th episode stylies. Congratulations to the boge. This is big stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:32 This is crazy. Not many pods hit 300. I remember that car ride back from San Francisco from the Sketch Fest. We were in the car. We said, how are we going to do? What are we going to do? And we did it. Remember we did talk about like we could talk about music.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Right. Yeah. Yeah. because we are so musically brained. Speaking of which, folks, these musically brained freaks will be on the road. Yeah, man. Pittsburgh tonight.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Tonight, Pittsburgh, Bottle Rocket. Hold on, I can do it better than that. Caboos. And we're going to be in Detroit on the 19th and Cleveland, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Chicago. Get those tickets, folks. And you know what? I heard that we're not going to,
Starting point is 00:02:24 we're canceling the shows if we don't get at least one person there per episode that we've released of this podcast. So 300 people. What? So 300 people need to be at these shows where we canceled them. And one large pizza pie.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And one large. Folks, that's the new thing at the show. Okay, you can bring our shots on stage. We know this. That's old, but that continues. That's not old that we don't like it. We don't do it anymore. We do.
Starting point is 00:02:53 But there's a new thing. There's a new thing. There's a pizza. A large hot pizza floats its way on the stage and we eat it. Yeah, we like that. Yeah, we like that. That's the new way you show gratitude to your favorite band. And folks, have fun with it.
Starting point is 00:03:11 It doesn't even be a pizza. It could be a calzone. It could be a bunch of burritos. A chicken dinner. It could be a full chicken dinner. There are some very funny pictures. from our Columbus, Ohio show last fall where somebody brought the pizza to the stage. It was delicious.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And then Mike was playing a song solo. Yes, Gordon. And then Mike was playing a song solo and me and Jeff are in the back eating pizza. And somebody got pictures of us. And it's just like, it's just like two guys mowing down pizza. Like unaware that we're even on stage, just like locked in on the pizza eating the pizza. It truly was like, now's our chance. He's doing, I'm so punk rock.
Starting point is 00:03:51 I can get two slices down. He's busy. He's busy with some bullshit over there. I kind of, I've eaten the pizza on stage, of course, but I'm always like, I don't want to get too greased up
Starting point is 00:04:02 before I start touching my... Yeah, I start dropping sticks if I get too grease. Yeah. I think it helps you slide up and down the fritz. It's a good thing with a little pepperoni. Yeah, that is. Oh,
Starting point is 00:04:16 yeah, if you're playing rock lobster, it sounds like that. Yeah, so that's a bad rock lobster. They say it's terrible for post-pisa. Yeah, but it's good if you have buttery fingers from eating lobster. That's true.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I want to get, I want to get myself to a lobster cookout this summer. Damn. I don't know if that's going to. I'm down to my place. I'm having lobster every night. What? What? You must be sick of it.
Starting point is 00:04:42 This is my normal dinner like, you know, like, ho-hum, get home from work and start the pot, the giant 50-gallon pot. As you're putting your briefcase down, you're like pouring it. It's too much work. You're cracking shells and like, oh, I got the, I got the big bowl. I put the shell scraps in. Oh, I got to clean the table. And I'm like watching the news on TV and answering work emails and. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Claws. I always love that in like, I don't know when this would be, but a movie where it's like a lady is, she's usually a lawyer. She's done with work. She's at home. She's kind of in a sweatsuit. Maybe one leg is up on the couch. She's doing her work.
Starting point is 00:05:25 There's wine and popcorn, but she's also doing her work. That seems I've never had that happen to me ever in my life. I feel like I'm so in control of what I do that I can eat, drink, and be working after work? No, no, no, that ain't happened from the hand, man. What she needs to be doing is focusing on getting a husband. Well, I think that's what this movie hopes to answer. If she gets just, if she just stops with all the work and she opens her eyes, the beautiful man across the hall from her. All the hallmark channel movies.
Starting point is 00:05:59 All right. Do we get to some booze news? Bibbib, bit, bit, bit, bit, booze news. Hit it. Gooting. Gooting. Peace off. Be and my mate's gone to work. To work.
Starting point is 00:06:18 To work. Be and my mate's gone to goon after work. The work. The work. I live on a fly. A fly. I live in a flat with my nose I live in a flat
Starting point is 00:06:28 I'm with a flat me and my knob sheriff A flat A flat A flat A flat Suck my knob Piss off
Starting point is 00:06:36 Sotted Wanker M M M Mace scum A b'em a mace scone A d'em a macekone A goole A goolea mace go A Bia mace go
Starting point is 00:06:46 A Bia mace mamee Maze mameeememate Moooo I play with my naus I'm A mack I'm A mack I play with my nose Midoo
Starting point is 00:06:55 But not the lorry. That's a truck. The Gooney Blokes was sent to us by Tom Hand. And if you have a booze news theme, email it to the sloppy boys podcast at gmail.com. Tom Handman. The Handman. Careful, Mike, he's coming for you. The hand man.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Hey, watch it, Handman. A little too close for comfort. Oh, Mike. Damn. That seems like if you get like a toy that's the knockoff version, like Handman. Oh, no, no. We want the handman. No, mom.
Starting point is 00:07:28 We want the 1799 version, you idiot, mom. It's funny that when you do a booze podcast and you do it so long for 300 episodes, you do it so well. Mm-hmm. So long and so well. You get it spat back at you in the form of a booze news theme. And I was the one saying, like me and my mates and goon and stuff. And I couldn't make it out.
Starting point is 00:07:50 I didn't know what he was saying. Oh. Because you need to enunciate Jefferson. No, no, no, no. Past Jeff did a good job. I was just like, I said that. What are we talking about? Yeah, I agree. I don't remember saying any of that stuff, but it's 300, you know, plus hours. It is weird when you hear yourself say something you don't remember, but it's funny and you like it. And you're like, yeah, it's many. But it is like the same comic sensibility that is currently in my brain was shared with that guy from a few months ago, too. So he's pretty good at coming up with stuff that I'm going to just love.
Starting point is 00:08:28 I like this. This old guy's sense of humor. He's good. That came up a bunch for me when I was researching the blowout this week. Folks, we went back and we sort of dusted off the old mashups that we've been playing throughout these episodes. And we just revisit them and have a lot of fun. And yeah, when I was looking through those, I was like, whoa, this is really funny. When did we do this?
Starting point is 00:08:54 Yeah, I don't remember a ton of that shit, and it makes me laugh. Also, we internally call them mashups, but I don't think any of them are matchups. We're talking about the songs that we have played on the show, lots of which were stolen and put down BVDs or overheard out in public, that type of. Yes, but by the original professionals who record them originally. Yes. I remember bringing up, I remember taking umbrage with, Tim, I'm blaming you for the reason we call these mashups, by the way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Early on, you were like, I got a mashups. And I was like, mashup is a word that already means something. And you were like, no, no, but calling them a parody is cheap and thin. And it is not high quality enough for our podcast. So it's actually you see it as a mashup between an existing song and an original idea that you have. You take the song and then song meets joke. It's a mashup. Yeah, well, I knew we weren't going to say parody to the people,
Starting point is 00:09:58 but parody is a dorky word. I don't know, you know. Right. A mashup is more like what Girl Talk does, right? Like a beat of one song and like the lyrics of something else. Yeah, two songs getting all chopped and screwed. Mashed around. Every year of the gray album.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Ooh, one of my faves the gray album. Is that a Danger Mouse? Danger Mouse. Yeah. I think was he like, came? canceled or something because he had such a promising career. And then Crickets. Cricot.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And they were Narls Barkley together, no? Oh, right. They were. Right. Man, that song was everywhere. That crazy song. Wait, that's Danger Mouse, but then who's the DJ that wears the mouse helmet? Dead mouse.
Starting point is 00:10:40 That's dead mouse. That's dead mouse. Now you got Mickey Mouse these days. Now you got me doing it. Now up in Cooper Tino, they're like, here's a mouse for your. computer. Ah, come on. What the hell?
Starting point is 00:10:56 We're into our wearables now. We don't need computer screens. Well, thank you, Tom Hand for the Booz News theme. Yes. The Handman. Which it was British in that shall factor into the drink of the day. But we are in Booz News. And here's the top Booz News story of the day.
Starting point is 00:11:16 We've got a new segment. Jeff. Hit it. Ooh, these are always fun. A new segment. Oh, wow. He's out And a about
Starting point is 00:11:25 Yes, heifer's up in a bout Tea boy's out He's teaboy What are you? Is up Calbi K here? I'm at Couturras in Pasadena And I'm about to try The viral soft-served margarita
Starting point is 00:11:58 Hi, how's going? Do you have the soft-served frozen margarita? What flavor? I do have a little bite Why do you try the world then? I'll do that. I'll do the little plate. Okay, I've got a flight of soft serve marks here, and I'm going in.
Starting point is 00:12:15 First one is red. Too thick to get up the straw. I'm going to have to go into the for the spoon. Delicious. Okay, one of them is pineapple, a micah. Red is strawberry, and it's delicious. Delish. Okay, I stepped to the bathroom to give my review because I was too embarrassed to talk
Starting point is 00:12:33 into my phone at the bar. But basically, I got a flight, beautiful looking. Pineapple, peach, strawberry, hibiscus, delicious flavors, varying sweetness and stuff. I give them a million points for the beauty of it. I got to ding them for not tasting any booze in there. It's kind of light on, though. Booze, though. I drank the whole flight, and I do feel the tingle of maybe like as if I've had one beer,
Starting point is 00:13:07 so they're not entirely boozeous. So delicious, a little light on the booze. And now my, the one of the things I've got to ding him on here. I'm in the bathroom. Now I'm trying to piss. I can't find my fucking dick down there. Hey boys out. Tea boy.
Starting point is 00:13:44 It's, those sound like, it's tea boy, but it's all fucked up, right? It's tea boy, or am I just inferring that? I'm manipulating it. Oh, right. I always liked in the Nintendo NES Ghostbusters. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, it's like, they probably use 80% of the chip in that thing to be like, Ghostbusters!
Starting point is 00:14:08 That's what most of the cartridges. And it's shaking in that moment. It's shaking and steaming. It's all funny, too. It's like the Ghostbusters, whatever, ghost symbol comes down. It's like, ooh, what's going to happen? Something's building. Offbusters.
Starting point is 00:14:25 Okay. This is not going to be a good game. Damn, I had that hockey game Blades of Steel. Oh, he did it too. I was so blown away that there was like, like announcer commentary, but it was just gets the pass. Gets the pass. Gets the pass. It was like said like two things.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Do you remember it was an arcade game called Hit the Ice and it was like a two-on-two version of a hockey game with like these kind of cartoony guys and. Like NBA gym? Yeah, kind of like that. And it was exactly like that. And it was like, it was like, shoot the pass, shoot the pass. Hey, he got me. It was like the weirdest stuff. Yeah, that's what it's like to play hockey.
Starting point is 00:15:10 He got me. They had like three sound clips of the announcer, you could say. Man, I learned that I was never a Sega kid, but developers for Sega Genesis games always hated the, the opening chime that like Sega did take up like so much memory and they're like we can't make enough game because this fucking Sega thing
Starting point is 00:15:34 but the Sega the Genesis people were like if we hit him with that up top they're gonna think the game they're playing is the most like futuristic amazing thing so you gotta wow them in the beginning but the developers were like
Starting point is 00:15:48 god damn the Sega thing I wonder if if like the Apple like turn on sound had happened And that was like, oh, God, now all we got to copy that and have our own, like, startup thing. I think the Apple guy, I want to say the Apple Chime is the same guy who came up with the THX, uh, brain. Oh, yeah. Wow. Would that make sense?
Starting point is 00:16:10 I think it would. Makes sense to me. I know I want to look up something. Jeff, when you're done looking up something, I'm going to look up something. That'll do it at the same time. Well, well, you guys are looking up something. I guess I'll kind of just hang. out here. Oh, I'll talk about that margarita, which was the
Starting point is 00:16:27 the verdict on the viral soft serve margarita that started in Cleveland spread everywhere and bars have been fighting to get soft served machines so they can make it. The verdict is, folks, it's a nice dessert. It's not boozy. It doesn't taste like tequila. I have a feeling if you had too much tequila, it's too melty and can't hold its ice cream form.
Starting point is 00:16:52 So it was, you know, a nice little thing to have after dinner, but it would not, like, if you were having a plate of enchiladas and then you ordered this, you, it's like, yeah, like having, I guess not ice cream, but like a sorbet. Was there, is there soft serve sorbet? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Yes, there is. I don't know. I should know. Nobody's got a fact check of me on that. Of course, sir. Sherbert. Sherbert. Real quick.
Starting point is 00:17:21 The Apple, iconic sound. The F. sharp major chord was from Jim Reeks in 1993. E. And the THX deep note sound was Dr. James Andy Moore. Dr. James Stinky. Name James, call me Andy. My father was, anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Anyway, any word on the Sorbet thing? No, but I had a sound effect thing I want to say. if we're all saying our sound effect things we looked up. I haven't said mine yet. It's a good one. The sound mixer for the birthday boys TV show on IFC, our friend Pat Jansen, I bumped into him at the airport recently,
Starting point is 00:18:07 and I was like, what are you up to? And he's like, oh, I do sound for Netflix. And I was like, what show? And he's like, no, not any show for Netflix, the app. And I was like, oh, what's, like, do you work on like that main, you know, when Netflix show starts there's, and he was like, you mean the tada?
Starting point is 00:18:23 I was like, ah, the ta-dum. And, like, yeah, he's involved with a ta-dum, but all the other, like, pops and when you click on something. Were you like, so what do you work for a week and your job's done forever? You recorded one ta-dum one time? He's like, no, no, the t-dums are live on each time someone watches. We have to have a t-dum guy that go, da-d-d-tom.
Starting point is 00:18:46 There's a timpony guy, a little orchestra. But, yeah, all the little beeps and bloops in like the, the UI, the user interface. Ah, that's cool. I have my little fun thing I looked up. The Olympic theme song, you know, is a John Williams joint. I hear that.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Is that crazy? It's, you know, we were going last time we were to, was this on, yeah, it was the main. We were talking about, I went to the World Cup and talking about those national anthems. And it's funny that for the Olympics, like, we need like an Olympic song. Not because it's all the fucking countries now. Shit.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Shit. Oh, shit. Well, similarly, somebody cool did the We Have the Meets song. Who is it? Arbys. Push a tea. It's push a tea. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:19:42 Take that, John Williams. Push a tea. Did we have the meats? Yes, yes, yes. I didn't know. I forgot that was a song. And I listened to an episode of Switched on Pop. about B.K. Have it your way.
Starting point is 00:19:56 And why that is so successful, people like love that song and has been around for a long time. And it was because that singer, B.K. Have it your way. You rule. I've never heard this. I'm a cord cutter. Oh, you're a cord cutter. Well, Mike, you're securely fastened into your cords these days. That voice is like a little bit off pitch.
Starting point is 00:20:21 and it adds some, it makes it sort of perplexing to people and they're fascinated by it. And it turns out they were in the studio recording that song with a vocalist, but then down the hall, I forget his name, but there was some rapper who's not like a famous rapper, but like who does this type of stuff. And they're like, could you, you want to do a take? And he's not really a singer. So it kind of came out a little bit like flat or something in a good way. That's interesting. People love to do things where it's like anyone could do it.
Starting point is 00:20:51 You know what I mean? Like anything that smacks of like a, okay, have you heard this term UGC user generated content? I know the words, the three words, yeah. So you'll be on a big commercial, right, for Arby's, let's say. And then they're like, okay, everybody step out for UGC. And then a new team comes in and they're shooting it on a phone. And it's made to look like grassrootsy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:18 But it's annoying to me that us three worked really hard at jobs and kind of worked our way up and built up our skills to not look like anyone could do what we do. And then here are commercials that are like, yeah, yeah, yeah. The commercials, fine, fine. But what really sells is if it looks like some influencer randomly pointed their camera at this roast beef, that's what really turns the people on. That's not why I got into the biz, Mike. that's not why I booked the Arby's commercial. And not the roast beef sandwich that you would actually get there. Like that would be the fucking thing.
Starting point is 00:21:55 Let's see a real person hold up a squished inch, inch high, disgusting little patty, which I do like. So the idea of a, the idea of a non-pro singer being like, there's something about this like shitty thing. I'm like, fuck you. I'm tired of shit. Yeah. When I heard that, I knew that was like a, or I thought that was like an advertising. thing like, oh, why is that thing off? But now to hear that it was just a guy
Starting point is 00:22:21 down the hall is almost inspired in a way. Like, they didn't go in saying It's only good for the guy down the hall. Yeah. Sorry, Mike, you're in the middle of something. It probably wasn't important. I do want to talk about that soft serve ice cream. Great.
Starting point is 00:22:39 That ice creep, Tim. Yes, it's not very flavorful. I could only describe it as like not a boozy thing and not good ice cream. It's like, it just kind of hovers in the middle and it's almost worthless and pointless. You had espresso martini? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that maybe mine was a little better because, like, if you're eating pineapple, it's like, like, even if it's a little light on the flavor, whatever, it's sort of like, I'm just having a fruity, like, a nice cool thing, but
Starting point is 00:23:08 yeah, that's nice on a hot day. As opposed to like a diluted coffee tasting thing. Yeah. Although diluted coffee, it's so bad. But, but, like, when I was eating my coffee one, like, I don't know if I could think of, like, the better version of it. You know what I mean? It's like, like you were saying, putting more alcohol in it would make it too weird. And then...
Starting point is 00:23:30 Right. I mean, I think the reason I wanted to go try it was to see if it was a margarita. And the answer is no. Like, it was not margarita. Also, they gave me four flavors. None of the flavors were classic margarita. So they really have nothing to do with margarita. Damn.
Starting point is 00:23:45 That's tough. Yeah, I was at the Madonna Inn last weekend. And I got a bunch of pool, bunch of poolside drinks, such as frozen margarita, frozen Mai Tai, frozen inia colada. Now, right a row. They were all over me for like, what flavor margarita? And I was like, get ready for this. Lime. Get ready for this. God, I didn't even really think of it.
Starting point is 00:24:14 didn't set until now how disappointing that is that I did like was looking forward to like a limie margarita ice cream and like because I do like that would be good what I mean ice cream I tend to not go for the fruit flavors because I like I just like no fruit enough but I do love like like like a like key lime pie is great so like a margarita ice cream would be fucking good man but if you're looking for, if I'm going to make a judgment about this viral sensation, I think that what it has going for is it's
Starting point is 00:24:50 much like the sprits. Its Instagram ability is rather beautiful. It's kind of pastel twists, you know, they pile up nice. I can't imagine beholding something like that. Sounds. Yeah, Tim, when you saw it, did you just drop to your knees in
Starting point is 00:25:09 awe? Yeah, exactly. A flight. Is that for Booz News. Wrap it up. All right, I'm going to wrap up booze news. Here's another shitty
Starting point is 00:25:18 fucking song. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty. That extra liberty feels like they are trolling us. Like, we're just throwing
Starting point is 00:25:27 one more in, you sex, a shit. Yeah. They don't think of us that way. They like us. All right.
Starting point is 00:25:34 But now going forward, positivity. It's the 300th episode. Yes. And folks, we have a humdinger today. The three dots and one dash. The three dots and one dash?
Starting point is 00:25:50 Yes, the three dots and a dash for our 300th episode you've had. Oh, I've had. I've had. Elaborate, Jeff. Oh, you caught me. I have had. Do you remember when Mitch got us into like a weird, not weird, a nice teaky place out on the west side? It was a speaky.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Oh, yeah. Tiki. Yeah, it's like hidden in the back of a, of a, of a, like a shipping container truck. Of like a hot dog place. Yeah, yeah. Oh, no. Hot dog place is lucky Tiki. Lucky Tiki.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Maybe it was that. Maybe it's that. Upstairs behind tail of a pup is lucky Tiki, but out in Santa Monica in the back of a truck was a different one. I'm thinking of behind Tail of the Pup. There you go. Lucky Tiki. Lucky Tiki. That's where I had my three dots.
Starting point is 00:26:43 we've been to three dots and a dash the bar right in chicago there's a bar an an iconic chicago downstairs tiki bar called three dots and a dash i'll tell you we've been there as a band but before that i was out there for work like seven years ago and um i went to three dots and a dash by myself and the fucking bartender knew me and gave me my drink for free that's my Chicago rules. That's why you have a podcast. This is a top tier bar and it's fantastic and everyone should go. But what was funny about this free drink was like, I was like, hell, yeah, this place rules.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Oh, baby. And I'm going to have the titular drink. I got a three dots and a dash. And they batch them there. It's like on tap. And it must have been like the bottom of the barrel or something because what came out was just like syrup. And I had like an undrinkably sweet, sugary, uh,
Starting point is 00:27:40 drink. So it was funny, like a cool, nice guy bartender gives me a free drink. And I had to be like, this was too sweet for me. Can I have a... He's like, there's always a bad one. But therefore, I don't even really know what it's tastes like. It's the, it's comparable to a zombie, I guess, but maybe a lot sweeter. Would you guys like to hear the history of it? Yes. I would love that. invented by the godfather of Tiki Don the Beachcomber at his bar in Los Angeles. As we know, Don the Beachcomber, he had opened his Tiki Bar in the 30s. But then during World War II, he was in the Air Force. Oh, Mike, he speaks of Ernest Gant.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Now, Jeff, can you come up with Trayor? He does. Vic's real name. Vic Bergeron. Wow. Oh, ho. I know some stuff. Some stuff gets retained.
Starting point is 00:28:37 I was going to make a joke. earlier that 300 episodes in and we haven't really learned anything, but this man has absorbed. He's a sponge, Mike. He's a sponge. I know. He is sponge-like. Okay, here's a question for you, Mike. Just see if you learned, what's the golden ratio
Starting point is 00:28:54 for a sour? A 2-1-1-1-2-1. It's got a rhyme. Thank God that thing rhymes. And listeners didn't see Mike's eyes go wide with the fear. 45. My anus dropped.
Starting point is 00:29:12 I just unloaded everything I had for lunch. I was so scared. It's like that, you know, that sound you have, Jeff, for the, that you do with, at our live shows, it was like, boom. That, like, really low.
Starting point is 00:29:28 The sub drop. The, like, Optimus Prime sound. When I heard Tim go, now, Mike, I went, doom. Okay. take it away so so don the beachcomer like pre world war two his like sailor credentials are very much doubted and fairly stolen valor type like he he was like a a guy out there in the seas
Starting point is 00:29:52 doing stuff but we're not really sure if he ever was involved in world war one but when he was already a successful bartender and kind of an icon when world war two comes along then he's in the air force and they give him a cool position where he's like captain of like hot hospitality. Like, there's stories about him literally, like, there was a secret meeting of like... This is like how Elvis was an FBI agent or something like that. Like, sometimes they get a charming guy and they cook up a distinction just for him. That would be a good movie.
Starting point is 00:30:28 Charming guy. In his book about him, I read about, like, one time there was like a secret meeting on an island and Churchill was going to be there. So they put out the word like, like, hey, Gant, there's going to be some real VIPs, make sure the place is taken care of. So he got some day too. Then, like, Churchill's a big booze hound. So he had some really good brandy and he made sure that it was like a lovely night. And then afterwards, Churchill went up to him and was like, this brandy was great. And everyone else is going to bed, but I hear you have the good room.
Starting point is 00:31:00 And then they like stayed up all night drinking rum. And they like finished all of his room. And then he's like, I'll get you back. And like, weeks later. He sent a shipment of good, Churchill sent rum. So like he actually, he did all this cool shit.
Starting point is 00:31:14 What? So was he, hold on, was he, was he in the army or he was, he was, he was, like,
Starting point is 00:31:18 hired by the army? Or was he actually in, like, a soldier? He's a cap. He was a captain in the air force. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:31:24 I thought you said there was possibly stolen valor, meaning like he didn't, previous to World War II. Because I think he, like, was on boats and stuff, but I don't think he was in the Navy. Um,
Starting point is 00:31:36 but then, okay so then world war two he really serves and then when uh celebrating the end of the war in europe after like hitler kills himself and then the nazis surrender v e day v day yeah you did the sign there with it with the uh the have you seen church over that it looks like a peace sign but it's a it's a he's doing v there was a whole thing with because of the roman numeral V means five. Churchill was like telling the radio stations to play Beethoven's fifth. Oh.
Starting point is 00:32:14 And then just by coincidence, the beginning of Beethoven's fifth is that, that, that, that, that, that's... And that's... One, two, three, four. Yeah, that, that, that, that is three dots and a dash. Oh. For V. Dot, dot, dot, dot, dash. Dot, dot, dot, dot, dash is the letter V in Morris code.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Isn't that crazy? Huh. Oh, yes. Three dots and a dash is the letter V and Morse code. That's the thing that we were sort of circling around last episode, but we said, nope. Save it for the main. Delane.
Starting point is 00:32:48 And now we're delivering it. Wow. So this is, this drink, V is for victory. This drink is named for victory, three dots and a dash, Morse code. And he just made it at his bar in L.A. as a celebration. and here is the recipe. This is one of these Don the Beachcomb recipes that was like lost
Starting point is 00:33:08 and then Beach Bum Berry was able to like put it together through context clues and unearth it. What are we going to meet like Mezzanine Matt? You know what I mean? Let's bring it back into the city a little bit, gang. You are, these guys are beach heads.
Starting point is 00:33:26 You're thinking of the biggest city thing is Mezzanine, the balcony of a theater. And we're using this recipe from liquor.com, which is their approximation, but is supposed to taste just like it. Here we go. One and a half ounces, AOC, Martinique rum, agri-coal view. A-O-C. Oh, great. The right is going to hate this one.
Starting point is 00:33:51 The idea here is that's, it's like a, you know, French or like from the French colonies, like Caribbean rum that is like the agricultural, rum agri-cola. I think it's like got a grassier. It's made straight from the sugar cane rather than being made from molasses. And it's supposed to have a little bit of earthiness to it. Is that when rum is spelled with an H? That's right. What are you?
Starting point is 00:34:15 Half ounce blended aged rum. Quarter ounce velvet philermenum, a Don Beachcomer Fave. Quarter ounce all-spice dram. Half-ounce honey syrup, which is honey and water. Half-ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed. Half-ounce orange juice, freshly squeezed. these one dash angostura bitters garnish.
Starting point is 00:34:36 You're going to, we're going to need three cherries and a pineapple frond. Now listen to these directions here, guys, because I don't have the frond. Well, you can use a pineapple cube. Great. Because it's supposed to be. Do you have your cube?
Starting point is 00:34:51 No. Actually, I think a cube is preferred, actually, because it's the cherries are the three dots and then the pineapple is the dash. Uh. Okay, here's the directions. Add the rum, phlearnum, allspice, honey, lime, orange, and bitters to a drink mixing tin, filled with 12 ounces of crushed ice and four to six small agitator cubes.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Small? Not big? I don't know why they wouldn't be big. Like the bigger ones are going to do a little more of the pushing around. Oh. Well, the crushed ice is already small. Agitator cubes is a normal size cube. you was right?
Starting point is 00:35:34 Have you ever heard of call it? I've never heard agitator. Yes, but it's funny to call them agitators. Like they're causing trouble in the blender. They're like hired a protest. Because some free radicals in there, some bad faith actors. Just to mix it up. Flash blend.
Starting point is 00:35:52 Then pour into a footed Pilsner glass, straining out any large chunks of ice and add the garnish. That's funny. I think I've seen people just dump the whole thing from the blender, warts and all. Garnish with three cherries on a cocktail pick and a pineapple frond. I've seen it where it's like three cherries and the pineapple chunk are all on the toothpick and then the front is just tucked in vertical. Yeah, yeah. Damn, well, this sounds good as hell. This is pretty complicated. I remember when we first started the pod, we ran into the zombie on like episode three, I want to say. Yeah. And that felt like biting off a lot going from the Tom Collins, like a three
Starting point is 00:36:33 ingredient drink to the zombie was like running all over town. Do we use flerum for that? I feel like the fernum I have is still the same one. Me too. That bottle is from 297 episodes ago. That's crazy. All right. Do you want to blend these up and we come back for sips?
Starting point is 00:36:52 Flash blend, yeah. Folks, we're going to make these drinks. And we'll be back with more sloppy boys after this. Now we're back. Three dots and a dashes in hand. Ooh, look at that, Chiffy. Beauty. And Tim.
Starting point is 00:37:30 I went Hurricane glass. Hurricane glass for the stilted butt there, the stilted base. It's got a stem on there, yeah, footed. I use my straw as my thing to hold my. Hey, look at that. I've never seen that before. Cherry's on a straw. Yeah, sort of do a lot of new things over here.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Oh, really just the cherry on the straw thing. Well, all right, Sips. All right, enough you two. do sips. Bottoms up. Ooh. Oh, yeah. That's an authentic little taste, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:38:09 That is an authentic little taste. I am getting kind of a grassiness, an earthiness. It reminds me of, Jeff, do you remember the name of the drink at the Tiki tea that's like a bigger, drier Mai Tai? It's like a Mai Tai and a half. Jim's special. This reminds me of the gym's special. it's basically, it's like a big punch bowl of Mai Tai with less sugar and it's wonderful. And it's kind of like this.
Starting point is 00:38:35 This is interesting. Like we've said this before, but my experience with Tiki is always like, I get something. I'll, you know, I'll look at the menu for 15 minutes and go, ah, this zombie. I've had a zombie before. I'll one of those. Because I just never, I can never really, unless they're like next to, you know, side by side. I don't think I can really tell. And kind of the same for this.
Starting point is 00:38:56 It's just like that teaky. It's the flerum, the phlearnum, I think. But it's like, ooh, that's a teaky taste I don't usually have aside from that. I mean, half of them do taste mostly the same. Am I? Yeah. My off base in saying that, because like, you're right, though. Like, you do need to go back and forth to be like, oh, yes, this one is drier.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Right. Yeah, yeah, right. I can't do it from memory the way I can like, oh, I know how a old-fashioned compared to ginotonic tastes. No, and imagine, you know, the taste test, like, when I did that, Jeff threw cocktails at me and we did a taste test video, I was having trouble telling a bloody merry from a margarita. This, teaky drinks, I would never be able to do a blind.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Because they all taste like two rums, lime, and then something else. But this one has all the usual suspects of like all spice is a great taste that, like, you don't want to taste. You want it to be preface. but barely. Angostura. That's like Clovey, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Was that the dram? I made a like a fake dram. You would, uh, said it like the half bitter is half, uh, simple. Was that the drain?
Starting point is 00:40:12 Yeah, I thought, yeah, dram is like, it's, it's a neutral spirit and then like, uh, you know,
Starting point is 00:40:18 infused, uh, all spice cloves, those like little stars. Yeah, but I think that, all spice dram. A lot of people on,
Starting point is 00:40:26 on the net we're saying like dark rum and all spice powder or angostura like I think even like that angistora liqueur would use would work but when I tasted ours it just tasted like very sweet angostura bitters to me remember we had a couple of drinks ago we had to get the little um the little uh pellets that were what gin is made of the the uh yeah juniper berries juniper berries I wonder if you those kind of had a interesting taste too. Those are kind of peppery, right? All spicy. Yeah, they were.
Starting point is 00:41:01 I should crush those up. They're another, like, weird, hard little nut that you bite and a lot of taste comes out. Those are, that's what my testicles look like. The berry that's a nut. The berry that's a hard little nut. It's the berry that's a nut. I'll tell you, it got in my head a little bit. Now I got the yips about gin after tasting the juniper.
Starting point is 00:41:23 I'm like, do I really like gin or is it just? vodka with these fucking berries in it. Man. Do I really like gin? You do. The really tough thing when you bounce back and forth between the rum teaky drinks and try to find like the difference,
Starting point is 00:41:41 if you finish a strong teaky drink, you're not going to remember your next. You know what I mean? Like it only takes one drink to like half completely fuck you. And then so you're going into the second one like, no, I really got to remember that that one had passion fruit. And like, it's just like it just does not stick. It's so funny to be drinking something that is a built-in, like,
Starting point is 00:42:03 memory eraser, mind eraser. Speaking of, that's what cheeky drink. Ooh. I wonder if I did my ice wrong. I'm starting to wonder if I even put all-spice dram in mind. I've been doing my whole ice wrong. That's a thing I think with teaky drinks, too. Sometimes you can miss an ingredient.
Starting point is 00:42:21 You're like, I think I got it. Like as long as there's like a whole bunch of rum in it mixed together. What rums did you guys use? I didn't really have the exact. I just used my Smith and Cross is always my big rum. That's got a nice stank to it. I forget the brand name of our rum agricultural, but for the blended, aged one we did Mountain Gay,
Starting point is 00:42:46 which I've heard is popular for this. Yep. I do a lot of Appleton Estate. Yeah, people use that too. The green one, just because I see it at 10. Tiki T. Green. That's come up more in probably the last 100 episodes.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Appleton Estates. Is that a new brand or is that a just new to me on this? No, I think we just like it, so we're talking about it more. Gotcha. I think we kind of figured out that that's what gives Tiki T's taste. It's a lot of that Appleton. And don't forget Don's mix, Tim. Yeah, I couldn't forget Don's mix, which we made and it was what, grapefruit and cinnamon?
Starting point is 00:43:24 Grapefruit and cinnamon syrup. What a stupid thing. Oh, yeah. Put grapefruit in your cocktails. And if you want, also add cinnamon, but to have some, like, how often are you reaching for the Don's mix? I guess he reached it a lot. Oh, shit. I was going to tell you another fun thing about the Madonna Inn.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Breakfast. This is, this is breakfast. I'm sitting down. I order a tea, just an iced tea, right? Sure. Normally unsweetened is my, is my deal. Unsweetened with lemon is what I want. Love it.
Starting point is 00:43:56 But what shows up, unsweetened, tall glass of iced tea on the top of it, rock candy as a stirrer. Oh, that's good. That's very good. On the wooden stick. Yes, on the wooden stirrer. And so here I am, I'm sort of like crunching on a little rock now and again, get a little and then stir it in there and leave it in there. It actually functions as like a as like a little mild tea sweetener. It's doing something.
Starting point is 00:44:29 Yeah, yeah. And also, I was just, I was so overjoyed to see. I think is rock candy, is this is rock candy supposed to be like less sweet? I know there are different forms of sugar and they're just kind of like recombining sugars and invert sugars and corn syrups. But it's such a like mid-century modern. flourish, teaky flourish. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:53 I love it. Well, remember we learned that rock and rye is rock candy flavor and rye and you're like, rock candy has a flavor. I thought that was just sugar. It's like, no. No. Yeah, it doesn't have a flavor. It has like a shape.
Starting point is 00:45:07 A structure. And somebody in a, somebody in the teaky world was just like, yeah, and this is a rock candy syrup. And it's like, how is that, how is that not syrup? That's just. simple syrup, sugar syrup. How is that not syrup? Rock candy melted down is
Starting point is 00:45:26 anything more than just simple syrup? Rock candy melted down. I got a lot to learn. Did you guys use, how did you do your honey syrup? Did you have to make or did you buy? I was trying to get the bottom of the honey bottle out. You know, when you have not two, there's like only a centimeter of honey in there.
Starting point is 00:45:44 And I had it upside and it wouldn't come out. So then I just held the honey under the faucet, sucked a little water into there, put it in the microwave. There is something stubborn about that last centimeter of honey. It was hard. It was rock candy. But then I put it, so then I put a little, I eyeballed, okay, there's, there's about that much honey. I had about the same amount of water.
Starting point is 00:46:09 I put it in my microwave, microwave hit start and forgot about it. And then it bubbled over and popped open. No. That's what I did. Hey. Damn, damn. Gosh. These things really do take you on a little trip, though.
Starting point is 00:46:27 This on the beachgoer's thing was like, rum rhapsodies. And he kind of came up with these flavors. But it really is funny how... That's fun. Suddenly I've drifted away. Rum rhapsody. Merry melodies.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Rum rhapsody. Looney tunes. Looney tunis. Those tunes were a bit loony. He was going to launch a whole series of animated characters that drink alcohol. Ooh. Now I've saved it until deep in the episode, but do you guys see what my shirt says? Federation. Football. It's a football jersey. Falernum. Curisau. Curisal. I finally got my jersey.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Two or no, three weeks after the proposed, we had both kind of agreed on a certain date that we were hoping to get this jersey. It worked for both of you. Yeah. And I called up the factory over in China. I called up the floor. I was like, hey, I'm still waiting on this thing. They're like, oh my God, we have it over here. It's got the shipping label. We just need to ship it. So I did not get to wear it to my game. I love when Adidas does something funky like that, where the shirt and the collar are different colors than each of the three stripes. Yeah, oh, yeah. You're used to seeing the sort of monochrome like run DMC, Adidas stuff, but I like when they get a little freaky with it. This, before the pod, Tim said, is that a Columbia jersey,
Starting point is 00:47:50 which it does look like a Columbia jersey, but no, it's got its own vibe. I like it. Not to me. Don't know what one is. Damn, damn, damn. Well, wow.
Starting point is 00:48:03 Hey, now, this is the 300th episode, is it not? Yeah. It is. I'll allow it. Do you guys have any good memories from the last 300 episodes? Hmm.
Starting point is 00:48:15 Oush. Well, I liked when we came up with, with the idea that nasty world what is it pee goes in a loop or well if you drop something it goes in a U shape
Starting point is 00:48:26 yes gravity moves in a U shape but only for a specific thing because in the movie nasty world when we drop poker chips they went up our butts I don't know if that movies so that is my favorite moment
Starting point is 00:48:42 of the pod I would I one thing that my brain always goes to is the THC ELSELTER episode when we were high out of our gourds and Jeff yelled at Mike. Oh yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Classic iconic moment. We're still working through that therapy, aren't we, Jeff? We're going to figure it out. We're going to get there. We're going to get you back over here. We'll do it again. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:49:11 I feel like drinks-wise, I've settled it. You know how like celebrities, have to answer the same questions a lot, so they have stock answers and they just go to them. I've found myself, rather than giving, like, re-evaluating, when people say, like, oh, you've done 300 drinks. What's your favorite drink on the pod? I pretty much always say Trinidad sour, because it was the one that was a revelation. And every time, we've been doing it every Christmas, and it still never lets me down. Like, I'm still like, what a dynamic.
Starting point is 00:49:40 And it did it's hidden in plain sight. You know, you have the bidders. And I didn't, you didn't know, you could pop that. plastic cap off the bitters and fill up, use it as the main spirit of a drink. Yes, yes, yes. That is the most revelatory for sure. But are you really, when people ask me,
Starting point is 00:49:57 I'm always just like, I don't know, I make margaritas and old fashions and that sort of stuff laying around the house. I'm not making Trinidad Sowers willy-nilly. No, my favorite cocktails remain, I'm always, if I'm in the mood for a cocktail, it could, like, I settle somewhere
Starting point is 00:50:15 along the spectrum, but really the two things popping to mine are either a martini or a mitai. And those are the two opposite ends of the spectrum. So, you know, there's 298 other drinks between them that if they didn't exist, it would be okay because there's a martini and a miti tie. Is there a mitini out there that could be figured out of my team? I don't know, man. They're sort of the polls in a way.
Starting point is 00:50:38 I know. What about a martini? You know what? When people ask me, my, my, my. go to stock, you know, interview question has been, uh, or answer has been the Cosmo, because that was a surprise hit early on in the run here. That was only like 20th episode. Yeah. And a simple one. Like that is another one that you actually can make. Um, I think that was, yeah, that's a, that's a, that was definitely a like, the big surprises like, it tastes good. And this isn't some, I thought this was
Starting point is 00:51:10 going to be like blended, get a blender out and do a lot of crazy shit. And I was expecting like a girl drink drunk, like the kids in the. Hall sketch or something like that. Right. You know, like, like something, something crazy. And it's like, no, it's pink. But it's like a stiff little vodka drink served up. Like, I, I think we did a pretty good job trying to rebrand the Cosmo as like a gender neutral delight. I agree. Mm-hmm. One of our first real pushes for, like, society. Equality. Yeah. And I, I haven't actually used this yet, but I remember us saying, like, to all the
Starting point is 00:51:49 Manosphere bros out there, get a Cosmo on the Rocks. It's, it's, it's a delicious drink and it's on a rocks and you can get in a rocks glass and you don't have to deal with the, if you're secure in your masculinity like me, you could drink out of any glass you want and not feel like... All my bros
Starting point is 00:52:05 are going to dunk on me. Your bros don't give a shit about you. Your bros are out there trying to score some... If we're going to have to say it that way. If you want to say it that way, that's how it's going to be said. And hey, man, if they give you guff for drinking out of a coop glass, are they really your bros?
Starting point is 00:52:26 Yeah. Yeah, if you're drinking, if you're drinking your Cosmo and they say, what's with you then? But dunk it on you say, well, I think we know who the Samantha is in the group. Say something like that. That'll shut them up. Bros. all know that reference. Oh, hey, you know another drink that was speaking of, uh, alleged girl drinks or whatever.
Starting point is 00:52:49 A drink that was a revelation, it was delicious that was, before we blew it open and brought it to the whole world, it was sort of just only on the gay enclave of Fire Island, the rocket fuel, remember that? Oh, yeah, that was good. It was like a pinocalado with amaretto in it. It was an only treat.
Starting point is 00:53:11 Amaretto is DeCirrano, right? Or DeCirrano is a type of armor. That has been a thing in this podcast that I have, it's opened up doors for me. Love it. Love of having a DeSerona because you can mix it with a, God, I always forget and I have to look it up. The French connection or the Godfather. One is a rye and one is a brandy. Is that right?
Starting point is 00:53:36 Cognac is French and Godfather is Scotch. Cognac. Cognac. Coneyag is French. Godfather is Scotch. And also a Decerona, you can make yourself a hand slam. Get yourself a grapefruit. That's right.
Starting point is 00:53:47 Get yourself some lime. You're making yourself a ham slamer. Hand slamer is not just for the tough masculine bros anymore. You know, women, you can try it. No, it never was. Hey, hey, you're at the bar, the bros are slamming. Ladies can slam. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:05 Ladies can smash. Hey, it's ladies slam night. See, it's not, and it's not bros before a hose. It's bros and hose. Hand and hand. Crossing the, finish line together. Hand and loving hand.
Starting point is 00:54:19 Like, well, we have to still be hose. What the fuck is this deal? Well, we have to be bros. We hate that. But the bros get to be bros and we have to be hos. No, but you got to understand bro's is like bad now. Bro's is bad now. Broz is bad now.
Starting point is 00:54:34 Chipped of sauce now? Hey, that came out of this podcast. Chipped up as sauce now. Yeah. That was because you made fetichina alfredo with with lays and French onion. That is true. That is true.
Starting point is 00:54:48 Let me ask you this. Have you ever gone back and listened to our early episodes and notice how different it is? No. No? Not really. I think it would cringe me out, bro. It cringed me out for many reasons. But what was so most interesting is just purely voice differences over the passage of time.
Starting point is 00:55:10 300 episodes how we've rasped ourselves. way. You'd think it was a cigarette podcast based on how our voices have changed. Which would be good. A cigarette podcast would be so fun. There must be. There's got to be one. Talking cigarettes is so funny.
Starting point is 00:55:30 Today we're doing American Spirit, uh, Kelleadons. Ooh, that's smooth. Ooh, that's smooth. I like the yellow's better. What's Keladone? We did a cigarette episode of the, of the sloppy boys blowout, Patreon.com slash the sloppy boys. It's a deep cut of a color. Celadon, Caledon,
Starting point is 00:55:48 I don't know. It's a type of blue. Serreelian? No, seriline? This is up veiled. These are all blues that are hard to say. Cyan? What about Azur? Sapphire. Ah, what about Curisal?
Starting point is 00:56:04 Mike. Mike, we covered that. Seems the Curseille is yellow now for all I care. Well, hey, what's the original Curiselle? because we call it blue cura sow. So that suggests a cura sow that's not blue. Oh, I see, I see, I see.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Yeah, I've got a bottle of dry curacao. It's cold and it's orange and dry and delicious. And remember folks, curacao isn't orange pulp. It's orange rind and pith and oil. Now, when you say pith, are you saying piss but you have a lisp? Pith. Tim, would you cut that crab, you're starting to pith me off. Stop.
Starting point is 00:56:44 But on a serious note, anyway, I was listening, I went back and listened to our first episode. We didn't even have our format down back then. I have heard a little bit. There was no booze news. We didn't really know what we're doing.
Starting point is 00:56:55 We're shooting from the hip. But we just, we sounded so young. And I, because this is our 300th episode, I brought in a clip from our first episode. I thought it would be fun to listen back and hear how much we've matured.
Starting point is 00:57:08 There we go. Unmistakable theme. Oh my gosh. That's Mike. Unbelievable. Hey, everybody. It's me. Jeff,
Starting point is 00:57:30 let's take a deep dive into the drinks that you love, everybody. Oh, we're so different. Oh, Jeff, you sounded like a dork back then. I sounded like a dork. You're not like a complete dark. I was speaking English.
Starting point is 00:57:47 Yeah, I guess it was pretty dorky with me. Me and Mike were saying some dorky shit. No, we were talking. talking about a fucking ex-bed, man. Um, ma'am. Okay, that was a joke, but for real, I actually did bring the real clip.
Starting point is 00:58:01 Jeff, hit it. Hey, folks, welcome to the sloppy boys, a podcast that takes a deep dive into the drinks that you love. I'm Jeff Dutton, along with Tim Calpacus. Hey, everybody. And Mike Hanford. Hi. And we're your hosts, the sloppy boys.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Once a band, and now, still a band. Still a band. And now also hosts of this podcast. A lot of people, I've gotten some emails saying, you know, could you stop being a band? Please stop to. We're not stopping being a band.
Starting point is 00:58:31 The band's the thing. I got a lot of emails that were not related to either. Just sort of, you know, hey, Amazon has this new thing you might like. I only get just the don't be a band thing anymore. Isn't that wild? That's funny. Little babies. I think it's because we had shitty microphones and we were like way far away from them.
Starting point is 00:58:51 Like remember there was a time, the first couple episodes, my micro was backwards. It was like the wrong way. Oh, yes. You were talking into the back end of your microphone. But now I talk right into it. But I do think there's something to having like lighter, like readier, tighter vocal cords plus cheaper microphones plus they're facing the wrong way. Well, it's also so funny to hear like Jeff, you do and the opening and we all sound like a little apprehensive or like, am I okay to speak here? It's like, yeah, this is Jeff is saying in Mike Hanford. I'm like, well, it's funny that one I at least intro it the way I do now, but there were
Starting point is 00:59:36 some where we would start recording, I guess, and just whoever wanted it would kick it off. And there was just no structure to it, which by the way, it's an interesting, because there are somewhere you kick it off or even Tim. Tim, kicking off? No. You understand. But, yeah, it's crazy. How far we've come.
Starting point is 01:00:01 Jeff, it's got to be nice. Now we have a valued member of the Sloppy Boys LLC, Milin Patel, editing our podcast. Before that, we had Michael Wolfe. But before that, we had Jefferson Dutton. That's got to be nice to not have to, if you record, if you flap your trap on a podcast, I can't imagine having to listen back to it. Like to hear my, to edit myself, it would be. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:24 Nails on chalkboard. Yeah. I want to say it was the first maybe 100 episodes. And if you can consider the blowout, that's like sitting down and listening to 200 episodes and like nudging, nudging little things around. Also, like, I probably went a little too hard taking out like breaths and stutters and stuff like that. But I'll say, me, meelin has increased my, my quality of life and my life. and my life expectancy.
Starting point is 01:00:53 Thank you, Meel. Thank you, Meel. Sloppy Boys LLC. Thanks, Meelan. That's a double whammy that you're going to have more years at the end of your life, but also you have more... More years and better years. Right.
Starting point is 01:01:03 And currently, you're getting more free time to live the life that you have. Yeah, to plan for those later years. And we should all be planning for those later years, folks. Yes. Put a little something away and give it to the sloppy boys LLC at patreon. dot com slash the sloppy boys You're just going to waste that money folks Let us take it and hold it for you
Starting point is 01:01:25 Yeah we'll look over it Put it in the tip jar over there on the Patreon Yeah we'll take a little look at it From time to time Fucking spends of it too Well let's talk about round two What the hell? I can't do and make another one of these
Starting point is 01:01:42 It's going to take me a year I will say I got a little lightheaded and woozy in the last 15 minutes In a way that I wonder if I ate enough today. Oh. You know what I mean? Like that sort of not just tipsy,
Starting point is 01:01:55 hot-faced drunk like we normally get, but this felt like a little bit lightheaded. Yeah, me too. I feel like the only thing I ate today was two chicken thighs. So there's, that's not enough, there's nothing to soak up the booze there. You know,
Starting point is 01:02:10 that's just some protein. Now that's good. That's sort of a meal for Jeff and I, the weightlifting guys. We would probably eat something like that. you go breast to keep it a lean protein I'm over here
Starting point is 01:02:22 eating all the fat I might do a quick hot dog before I come back with round two but not cooked but not cooked cold out of the package cold Hebrew national to the dome
Starting point is 01:02:34 nice did you buy these for the 4th of July and not eat them and they're left over yep and when you come over later we're having a hot dog party Tam we're getting rid of these dogs oh that's fucking great I would say round two
Starting point is 01:02:46 of this as we've been talking, I'm almost certain that I forgot to add my allspice dram. So for round two, I'm not going to make any tweaks. I'm just going to make sure I put all the liquids into the cup.
Starting point is 01:02:57 I definitely, as I was coming back here, I was like, there's no way I put all those ingredients. No way. All right, folks, we're going to make round two and when we come back,
Starting point is 01:03:08 our final thoughts on three dots. Three dots and a dashes in hand. Round two. Okay. I can confirm. I definitely forgot my dram the first time. Almost forgot it again. But this is with the dram in there.
Starting point is 01:03:39 I liked the first round. But this is a more, even more like mysterious, forbidden something. You know, this is dark and nasty. Well, you had your dash of Angostura, but now it's sort of doubled up, huh? Yeah. Now it's three dots in a dash. Yeah, I would say if you don't have dram, put 10 dashes of Angostura and a packet of sugar and you'll get the idea. I, uh, I, I, I blended up my cherries in with the drinks.
Starting point is 01:04:05 So that's why mine's so red. Hey, good call. I was going to do, I went, um, garnishless because three luxardoes in this is going to put you in the poor house. Naraschino, Marisciino. I have, not only do I have a jar of luxardoes. I have two different brands of branded cherries. And I was using a really good one just now.
Starting point is 01:04:26 It was like $10 cheaper than Luxardo, still $26 bucks. but it was like a Lazzarotti, and I recommend them. They're very sugary, brighter, but absolutely delicious. Does I come in the... From Luxardo, don't listen to what Tingis said. Oh, yeah. No, I mean, these are definitely a distant second.
Starting point is 01:04:45 Luxardo is the king motherfucker. Is it one you were talking about in the white jar with the blue lettering all over it? No, but those are great. What's that shit? Yeah, those are cool. I like the look of it. It looks like that tequila we always think of,
Starting point is 01:04:59 that I always think of it. Yeah, that fancy mescal that's like... Blue azure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Azul. Speaking of which, we got to stop talking so much shit on mescal on this show. The people don't like it. They like the drink and they don't like us shit talking the drink.
Starting point is 01:05:16 Really? Maybe three... It took us 300 episodes to become the wise sages we are now. Maybe the next 300, we devote them entirely to coming around on that drink. To Mescal? What's the Mezcal drink that is the tip of the spear that's supposed to sell you on Mezcal? What is it? Okay.
Starting point is 01:05:36 Well, the facetious guy in me was about to make a joke and say, it's swapping it in for every fucking thing. You swap it in this. You just swap it in that. It's a swapper. I don't know. What is the most popular? I mean, it's fancy. Right.
Starting point is 01:05:49 So a lot of people just sip it. It's like the scotch of the cacti world. Right. So maybe, and like, this is probably what the answer actually is, like you find a mescal that speaks to you because we know that tequila all comes from one plant, but mescal can come from like whatever, 200 plants. So it's about finding one that maybe isn't band-aity for me, the J-Man. Finding something with a unique flavor profile that suits you, Tim, or you, Mike. Oh, shit. No, not me. My tastes are too strange. This kind of elaborated my point where I just Googled
Starting point is 01:06:26 most popular mescal cocktail. And it said, smoky mescal margarita, Oxok, Wahakin, old-fashioned, mescal paloma, mescal nigroney,
Starting point is 01:06:37 it's all swaps. But then here's one that's legit. naked and famous. That's a very good cocktail. And it does use the mescal well. It's like,
Starting point is 01:06:46 it's a little bit paper plane-esque. I remember. I remember. Indie Slees era, named at least. Very true. Yeah, what band is that? Naked and famous.
Starting point is 01:07:00 Oh, yeah, yeah, that's the band. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, I was thinking paper plane is a M-I-A song, Naked and Famous. But do they have a song that goes, yeah, yeah, yeah? Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Oh, what's it called? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:15 Oh, God, that is such an era and a type of music that is in these slop, sleaze, as we've described. Ooh, I miss it. Ooh. You miss that type of music, Jeff? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I like naked. Oh, Youngblood. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:31 Yeah, I like that shit too. Did you see Nirvana, the band, the show, the movie? Yeah. Yeah. You know the song, like the indie pop song when Jay gets famous? Yes. I don't remember it, but I know the story. Go ahead.
Starting point is 01:07:46 Well, we wouldn't know it because we're not Torontonians, but Stefan from Pup was telling us that that song was a legit hit. Like, somehow, like, you. years before the movie, that guy did make that song and it was a one-off hit. And it's like a big indie pop song. Oh, Jay and his sister in real life made like a one-off hit that's like a huge hit in Toronto. And it's the song that that like explodes him in this alternate version in this alternate future without Matt. But what a funny thing that in the movie you're like, oh yeah, this this funny guy has this song that's a hit. And then also in real life, yeah, no, that funny guy has a song that's a hit.
Starting point is 01:08:24 And the other guy, I forget who's Jane, who's Matt, or Matt is the longer-haired guy. He, like, Jeff, you were saying he's got a movie about like, uh, school shooting or something. Like, oh, he's Bourdain? He's directing the new Tony. The new Tony, uh, movie Tony is him. He directed it. Are you, are you, he's directing it? He directed it.
Starting point is 01:08:44 Wow. Oh. He also did blue, uh, blueberry, Blackberry. The movie. And he, which, which he was in as well, which I didn't realize at the time. And I enjoyed that movie. I saw it on a play. So his school shooting movie, God damn it, what's it called?
Starting point is 01:08:59 It's so good. It's on YouTube, but you should find like a real version. The Dirties. This is sort of like, what if like the fun film kids were, had Columbine disease in their brain? And I've never seen a movie so funny also be so tense like they're just squeezing a balloon for the last like 30 minutes of this thing. Because you know it's going to go so.
Starting point is 01:09:24 bad, but it's still funny. It walks this crazy fine line. And then the other thing I heard is that Operation Avalanche is this movie that he did where it's about faking the moon landing, right? And he wanted to do it in participation with NASA, the actual NASA. They let him shoot there because he told them he was making a documentary and he was in fact shooting a fictionalized movie, he told them they were shooting reenactments. He was actually shooting his movie under NASA's nose about faking the moon landing. Just like, he's got this weird social experiment brain that goes into like all of his movies. They stopped the movie, like they stopped production on that one?
Starting point is 01:10:09 No, they, it came out. You can watch it. Oh, it came out. Oh, shit. Yeah, but I haven't heard so much about the, um, the final product of that movie as I have as others. But the fact that he like, he swindled NASA to shoot that movie. It's crazy. NASA.
Starting point is 01:10:24 wild strange fellow that Matt Johnson he's a freak man he's a freak man okay final thoughts on the drink Mike kick us off this is an order again for me in so much that I will have another teaky drink again in my life I think
Starting point is 01:10:45 and this one's is just as good as any of the others that I would come up with me yeah I'll take another one of these or anything like it Yeah. I mean, next time I order this, it'll be because it's the first teaky drink whose name pops into my head first. Timothy? Order again. And I was already sold on round one when I forgot my dram because I was like, yeah, it's kind of like a Mai Tai or I guess it's sort of zombieesque or whatever. But then when I added the dram, it has become foreboding and dark and sinister in a way that is is very appealing to me for.
Starting point is 01:11:22 sometimes you're like, I'll have a creamy cookie nutty one. Other times you'll have a sweet one. Like this one is a sort of end of the night. You're kind of mad. Yeah, folks. My co-host speaks of the herbaceous stack that is all in and around and throughout this drink. It's what you're going to want if you're going to be a little simmering and stewing and perhaps angry.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Another thing I'll recommend, folks. I've never thought of tiki drinks in association with like feeling down in the dubs like a whiskey like a country westward Western whiskey guy or something like oh man she she left me the job's gone I need a I need a zombie It truly is like the flavor of bitter
Starting point is 01:12:06 You know like No I'm not associating it was like the emotion of bitter But it's an order again and again and again And especially if you have some extra hot dogs Just in the fridge get a couple Before you do it get get an extra hot dog or two just to be sure. Oh yeah, how was that hot dog you had a cold?
Starting point is 01:12:27 Oh, yeah. No bun though, Jeff? I feel like the bun would soak up the booze. Well, when you come over, we'll have hot dogs, buns, long cut pickle, long cut for a sandwich stacker line right alongside the bun. Love that. Do you have mustard or should I bring? I got French's yellow, ready to go.
Starting point is 01:12:46 That works. I like that long, that, oh, that's good, Jeff, with a. pickle, that's smart. Because you can put in a whole spear, you can put in a whole spear, but then they're competing, you see? Yeah, yeah. They're competing for bun space. And oftentimes, you go to squeeze that bun to get a good handle on it, and where does that pickle go
Starting point is 01:13:03 to the ceiling or out the back into your friend's face. That's our show. Follow us on social media at the sloppy boys, where we release these recipes ahead of time. And if you can't get enough boys, patreon.com
Starting point is 01:13:19 slash the sloppy boys. That's one as you can go. The next place you can go is you put on your Hawaiian shirt, you get your lovely patient partner, and you bring them out in real life to see the boys do their thing in the flesh. I-R-L.
Starting point is 01:13:35 It's time, folks. Check the link tree, baby. If you're on social media, it's the link in the bio. It's the link tree. We list all the dates. I'll tell you something, folks. Also, uh, we have found out on average, the sloppy boys' tickets are cheap.
Starting point is 01:13:51 nationwide of all bands. You don't joke. We asked venues to what's the cheapest price because we want to be able to come have a fun time. We know money's tight out there and it's nice to get the fuck out of your house. And I'll tell you right now, tonight
Starting point is 01:14:09 we're in Pittsburgh, but after that next week, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Chicago, come see us. Wait, how many, that was one, two, three, seven. that guy didn't like that one. I didn't like that one. Well, I got to get off this thing and get some air going here.
Starting point is 01:14:38 I'm going to lose it. Yeah, I don't know why this drink. I think I ate enough today, but in what you guys were talking about a couple of minutes ago, it all of a sudden just like washed over me in this like, hey man, I got a chill out, man. All the ingredients team up in a nefarious way, much like the axis of evil itself. Very true. It's like they have to, they get in the drink together and they meet each other and they get in your stomach like, okay, we're in this for the long haul. Let's get to know each other.
Starting point is 01:15:08 Let's team up and then let's make this guy drunk. Right. Well, Dan. But for now, we can say for the three of us, victory. Victory. Three dots and a dash. Da, da, da. We love you, folks.
Starting point is 01:15:22 See you next week. I love you.
