Starting point is 00:00:01 Hey folks, welcome to the sloppy boys where we take a deep dive into the drinks that you love. I'm Jeff Dutton along with Mike Hanford. And Tim Calpac is? What is up? Oh. And where you're a host of The Sloppy Boys, your source for subtle masculine style. Okay. Subtle masculine.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I think that's about right. Is that the style that was being exuded by Mike's laugh during the intro? Oh, yeah, folks, we should tell you that the way we define subtle masculine style is sort of like, like somebody like a witch kind of, no, and that was, that was I doing that because I'm going to talk about Halloween in just a minute. But Jeff, I want to hear about this more about this subtle masculine style. You want to hear more about it? People tune in to hear it from you, man. Me?
Starting point is 00:01:08 Well, I want to, yeah, okay, then I didn't understand what we were doing. A friend of ours was like, hey, I got a gig, and I looked it up. And the lead in it was somebody who I didn't recognize, but under his description, it said that he was known for his subtle masculine style. So I said, hey, that ought to do for us too, man. I wonder what that means, like, to, like, is it being they're not buff? Or they're not like honky-toggy, like a truck driving type guy? It was like sort of a Pedro Pascal type guy.
Starting point is 00:01:41 And then you're like, yeah, okay, he's not like the rock, but you know, he's got a subtle masculine style. Well, here's what I was going to say about Halloween. Now, you know, it's, you know, we're getting close. We're in the dog days of summer right now. We're in the dog days of over. Boy, we're getting close. Mike, I haven't even heard the crunch of leaf. You haven't?
Starting point is 00:02:02 No. I haven't even taste the spice of pumpkin. We just had here in New York, we just had a very nice weekend where it was just just tipping into like the cool, a brisk breeze maybe, but still wearing shorts and a t-shirt, but I'm not just like sweating while standing in one spot. You know what I mean? I had the windows open on the home, no AC.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Oh, but while feeling this mood, before I left the grocery store the other night, I bought some candy corn, something I usually do not make. Now, that is something I have never bought, and I know I'm on record for a not buying candy. Timmy haven't lived. I thought of...
Starting point is 00:02:43 I don't even think I've seen candy corn available in the store. It's just a thing that's just a round. If you need it, it's provided. Did you know that like candy corn, it doesn't look very much like corn, we can agree.
Starting point is 00:02:53 It looks like corn if it was only... If it was pulled out from entirely the root. So you can put them together and make... You can put them together and make a corn so that it's like a cylinder of niblets facing out, Mike. Have you ever done that? niblets facing out.
Starting point is 00:03:11 They have something you can put the corns into? No, no. You buy a candy cob. You've never got niblets out. I've seen these. You roll a toilet paper roll into frosting and then you stick it in. Yeah, yeah. Make sure you use the toilet paper roll.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Take that from the bathroom. Bring it into the kitchen. Put the food on it. Rins it in water. Also, once you've built this thing, very funny to know you're going to eat it like corn on the cob, jump it down a 20,000 calorie treat. Every bite just more fall off the edge.
Starting point is 00:03:50 The reason I bought it was, I was thinking, Tim, about your maxim of, you know, no adult should be buying a candy bar, was it? Or a full candy bar? I was merely saying that I, a subtle masculine adult, have never bought a candy bar. That's right. And I have, and I will do again.
Starting point is 00:04:07 But I thought of the candy court. And I was like, hey, I haven't seen Candy Corn, and again, I'm in this fall mood. I haven't seen Candy Corn displayed like this in a long time. And it was Jelly Belly was the company. So I said, they do good work. What happened to Bronx? That's what I want to know, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:04:24 What did happen to Brock's? And I feel like the only time I've ever had Candy Corn is what Tim is talking about when it's just around. Like, I've never seen it come out of a package. Someone's trying to get rid of it. It's just like, hey, in everyone's gift bag, give a handful of candy. Candy corns. Do me a favor. Take some candy corn.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And also take those corns or the pumpkins with like the little green top on it. Oh, I like those. Those are a little too much. There's a little too much going on there for me. Extreme. You know what's funny? So I was enjoying the candy corn. It tastes good because it was like fresh out of the bag.
Starting point is 00:05:03 And I had like a couple handfuls. I was like, well, that's all I need probably for the rest of the year. Oh, you peaked early, Mike. I peaked, but I'm still ready for PSLs. Okay. It's funny if you're like, I'm so excited for Halloween, I'm getting started early, and then you burn yourself out early. You're like, ugh, this sucks.
Starting point is 00:05:25 I'm looking forward to fall and the whole thing. Brocks, as a reference, is a good one. Remember, we had an old birthday boy sketch about old ladies giving away Halloween candy and with all the weird candies. and when we did the sketch live, one of the old ladies goes, here you go, it's Brock's. And I got a laugh and he goes,
Starting point is 00:05:44 B-R-A-C-H, apostory, S. And just like, just the mere spelling of the word got to laugh. You don't say that out loud. A lot of great beats in that sketch. First of all, like, we came out one after the other and it was teed up as like, hey, folks, you know, for this next, you know, the next act isn't really a stand-up. We've actually invited some local old ladies
Starting point is 00:06:06 from the neighborhood here in Franklin Village to give out some candy. And it was like shitty candy, shitty candy, shitty candy. One of them was pennies. And just threw a fistful of pennies into the audience. But the best one of all was Mike, you made weird cookies.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Intentionally tasteless, flowery cookies that you gave out so that it's the only taste joke I've ever seen in my life. I love that we got to do, we did that. Not only did I make taste those cookies. Instead of sugar, I use salt. It was like an extra laugh
Starting point is 00:06:40 or extra experience for an audience member who got one of the cookies because we threw them out to like take a bite and you kind of see like people being like, ooh, what is this? It was the first funny taste a comedic taste. It was, yeah,
Starting point is 00:06:58 that was fun to do. Quite a central experience. It was also like, ooh, we're doing that thing. And every like the day we do it, I'm like, fuck, I got to bake some cookies today. some bad cookies, some salties. Well, do we get in some booze news? Bip, bib, booze news, hit it. There's something that I did in the past,
Starting point is 00:07:15 then I swore I wouldn't do it again. I hacked Scott Stacks. I hacked Scott Stapp's laptop. Gotts that's Laptam. And hacked Scott Stap's laptop. To go into a rocker's house and steal his debt up. Creed lead singer's house. I went down into his basement.
Starting point is 00:07:38 I took out his computer. I hacked it. I'm glad you did that, Tim. And like always, the show is sponsored by a BVD brand briefs. Ridged chips. I got a nice reverend guitar right there. Badger Bev's reached the badger. Ehm.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Mmm. Mm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. The badger babes reach the badger. Mm. Mm. Mm.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Well, quite a big pile at the end of their. Top, scop, laptop, drop. sent to us by Count Dropula, and if you have a booze news theme email to the sloppy voice podcast at gmail.com. Ooh, Count Dropula, that's nice. That's one count that's welcome here on the pod. We welcome that, that vampy man.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Yeah, this time of year, especially as we're raving up for Halloween. We do invite him in. Yes, yes, but other vampires we do not invite in because we don't want to get bit out of the day. Don't get bit. Hey, some advice from vampires everywhere.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Don't get beat. They're giving that advice? Around Halloween they have to, yeah. Watch out. Don't get beat. It's like how the tobacco companies are the ones that have to do the anti-smoking ads, yeah. Yeah, exactly. It's kind of like reach for the badger too.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Reach for the badger. You're sort of cautioning. Watch out when you reach for the badger. Don't get beat. But don't forget, don't forget when you reach for the Badger, you're reaching for the Bev. Yeah. Can't deny that. In a way.
Starting point is 00:09:14 I think we're pretty far afield from booze news here. Okay. There's a lot I can talk about. Of course, there was a big New York Times piece about looking back eight years about the Aparall Spritz was the drink of the summer and about how its influence has changed over the eight years. Of course, there was also an article in New York Times about how the Spitz. about how the spigette from Baltimore has really risen to the place of being a staple of menus now. There have been multiple Guardian Huffington Post talking about the Hugo Spritz, which you know,
Starting point is 00:09:46 but it's been solidly placed as the second biggest spritz. Data towers filled with the articles about all these. Now, we could talk about these articles, but instead what I'd like to talk about is, scandal rocks the pot. Oh, shit. Am I getting rocked here? I'm at a vacation house with my family in upstate New York, trying to have a swim,
Starting point is 00:10:14 trying to relax after getting some labs, trying to eat a hot dog and forget about my co-hosts for once. And I get a text from comedian Bartia Salimi, friend of the show. Yeah. Hey, Tim, it's nice to hear from a friend. It certainly is, Jeff. It certainly is.
Starting point is 00:10:34 Sometimes the content of the text from the friend is not what you wanted to be, which is, the text is, hey, Tim, is this you? And he is at the Los Feilis Goodwill store, and he has a picture of a Timmy St. Rock t-shirt. And I thought, no, well, you only people on earth that have T-shirts of my old indie rock project, Tennessee Rock, are Mike Hanford, who lives in Brooklyn, and me who's currently in Kingston and has my shirt with him. So at the Los Angeles, Goodwill, there's only one person left, Jeff, isn't there? It could have possibly. We're trying to figure out how that got there, man. Yeah, how did that get there? Jeff, did you respond?
Starting point is 00:11:15 But did Jeff call? It was like, oh, you found it. Thank God. Oh, I've got away from me, man. I thought that Bardia was at the rock and roll hall of fame, or at least the hard rock rock cafe. Or at least your house, maybe. Looking through your...
Starting point is 00:11:32 Yeah, sure. Well, I'm gone. Oh my God. And then now I get text back from Jeff. I tell Barty, I think I could only be Jeff. I text Jeff. Did you, did you do this? And then you said, oh, I guess I accidentally did that.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I did do that, didn't I? Okay, look, look, Tim. You're taking charge of him. I should have. Look, we all have clothes in our closet. We're like, yeah, these are the shirts I wear, but like this is my closet. it's so full of stuff and like,
Starting point is 00:12:05 this is a pile of clothes. It's like, I keep this stuff, but I don't wear it, right? Doesn't spark joy. It doesn't spark joy. And here I am bringing stuff to the goodwill and wouldn't you know it. Timmy St. Rock shirt is in the stack of shirts.
Starting point is 00:12:21 I'm like, well, I don't wear these. So do I keep them? Oh, it's just in the stack as if you were not the person who made the stack. Also, it's like, it's in a stack of shirts, but it's like,
Starting point is 00:12:33 well, I don't wear these. although one of the shirt is is about the band I'm in and sort of the guy in my band and stuff and maybe I wear a shirt. Stage. Stacks get made.
Starting point is 00:12:48 The stack was made. It was a passive action. Look. The stack was made. Scandal rocks the pod. I do feel terrible about that. My heart sank when I saw it. I like that you thought, Jeff, I'm the king of Los Felas.
Starting point is 00:13:07 You couldn't have gone a few towns over? Yeah, really? Or that one just thrown away, at least, Jeff. Or maybe you thought that that's where it was definitely going to sell because it's a hot item in Los Felons. Ah. Oh, bad. Well, see, this is a shirt.
Starting point is 00:13:24 We get gifted stuff on the road. And who made that shirt? Was that? Ashley from Minneapolis. Blaskowski, yes. She came down to Pittsburgh and gifted them to all of us. I mean, Phoenix. See, I, yes, Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I was going to say either Phoenix or Atlanta. Phoenix. Atlanta, we got there for the beer shirts. Those are good shirts. Jeff's probably putting those to Salvation Army. I don't know where you're bringing those shirts. I can't find that one. It's just very funny that it is a, it's a fake shirt, like a not-over-sale shirt,
Starting point is 00:13:56 but here's an extra funny thing that Barty has sent me a picture of the T-shirt right next to it on the rack and there was a it was a Julio Torres tour shirt. It was like the old comedy section over there. Like they're like, yeah, these will kind of go together. That's really funny. Well, Tim, I said this on the chain. I love the artist. I love the album.
Starting point is 00:14:19 The shirt just wasn't for me. Well, I understand you not wearing a shirt that has a picture your friend on. And I'm probably not walking around wearing too many Dutt's shirts or Hanford shirts. But I would like to think you should. And you have the opportunity. You've known what you had there. This could have been an auction item. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:37 I should have just given it to you. Yeah, I wear mine all the time. That would have been the best course of action. Yep. I think it's a good shirt. The colors are good. I think there's a cool like blue, orange, yellow sort of thing. But it's also, it fits me well.
Starting point is 00:14:53 I like the fit. And it's nothing special. It's like a gilden or something. Yeah. Fits me good. Get into a gilden. be good. Come on T-shirt, make you fit so good.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Anyone who's a fan of mid-aughts indie rock Springsteen influence, head on down to the Losephil is Goodwill. Barty didn't buy it, so it's sitting there on the rock. Oh, no way that thing's still there. Barney didn't buy it? Oh, Tim, I'm mad at Barney. How much was it? I wonder, did he...
Starting point is 00:15:23 Amir Penny? Did he say what there was a price? A hey Penny. A hey Penny. No, I should walk down there and see. what they're charging. I bet it's still there. You should buy it. Yeah, I should.
Starting point is 00:15:35 You should walk down there anyway. You need the steps and you're just pulling to people in your ear, brother. I feel so bad. I'll go have these on it. Could you imagine the look on that cashier's face? Oh, yeah, I'll ring you up with this Timmy St. Rock shirt, Mr. St. Rock! We are all fans of everyone on our shirts here, and I'm the biggest fan of all.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Jeff, you know the real irony? that that the Timmy St. Rock album that that shirt is advertising was recorded on your computer and your bedroom and you were not interested. You know anything to do with that project anymore.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Hey, we got to put that on Spotify. Did we ever do that? Are you interested in that? I'm interested in that, yeah. Oh, good. We should do that. It's like a sloppy voice presents. We're leaving streams on the table, Tim.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Shit, we can't be doing that. Well, Tim, I do feel terrible. I'm sorry. We should go. get that shirt back. Yes, and you're forgiven. And Slopheads, last bit of booze news. Come see us playing the Hollywood Palladium on September 16th.
Starting point is 00:16:38 We're opening up for Star Mom. That's going to rock. Then for the New Year's run of shows on the East Coast, we're talking December 29th, 30th, 31st. We're going to be in Boston at Rockwell, Brooklyn at Littlefield, and Philly at Milk Boy. I will definitely be at those. Jeff, you and you'll be there, bring Tim.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I'm trying. I'm going to try. Try to get him out. I got a feeling he's going to come out. Just say, hey, Tim, you'll have a space to rock and roll, get fucking blitzed and chill with the coolest people around. Yeah, I think he's going to be coming to that one. And folks, if you're thinking, like, I'm going to bring my friends, but they don't know the sloppy boys music. Don't let that be a speed bump.
Starting point is 00:17:23 The sloppy boys are the world's first music adjacent band. you don't go actually listen to the music. You go for the unparalleled great times and the people you're going to meet and the drinks you're going to drink and the exes you're going to text. It's almost like, all the exes you'll text. We always say that.
Starting point is 00:17:41 No one's ever actually texted an ex, but we'll get, hey, do enough shows if somebody's going to text an ex. But I do think it's important to make the point to people that if you like our music, you're probably thinking, oh, yeah, I'll go to that show, but that's just for me. No, no.
Starting point is 00:17:54 Trust your boys, Tim, Jeff and Mike have become expert showmen. We can put us in front of a cold crowd in the coldest room. We'll warm them right up, won't we? Yeah. We played in an igloo up there at the North Pole one time. All right. I'm not going to finish that.
Starting point is 00:18:11 All right. Is that it for booze news? Wrap it up. Oh, that's some good booze news. Now we turn our attention to the drink of the day. Okay. This is sort of the main event of the pod. People tuning in are going to are sort of like finally we're getting to it.
Starting point is 00:18:28 The DOD. is the M.E. of the pod. Main event. The day is the main event. Go ahead. Very good. We should not have stopped down for that. I apologize.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Skinny girl margarita you've had. The gendered part of it makes it sound a little weird because it's like the dudes could cut corpse too. I agree. But don't you think it's a clickier episode title for the sloppy boys do the skinny girl. I like that. Yes. Well, we can.
Starting point is 00:18:55 I like that. Okay. So people have been clamoring for us to do the skinny girl margarine. The skinny margarita. And we have been doing research to find, like, well, I guess that just means less sugar, less calories. People doing a little agave, a natural sweetener, getting the mix out of here, getting the simple out of here, even getting the sweet triple sec sort of stuff out of here. But that's not the cultural moment that people are referring to. I think the skinny girl margarita, as invented by Bethany Frankel on Real Housewives of New York, season one,
Starting point is 00:19:35 this is the one that went viral and I think we can credit her to the craze. Here's a clip from season one, Real Housewives, New York. I think we're doing tequila. Tequila? I only drink one drink, and I call it the Skinny Girls Margarita. It's Patron Silver on the Rocks, fresh lime juice, and a little splash of triple second. Me too, my guess. And she just looked at me and said, I'll have that.
Starting point is 00:20:01 It's a skinny girl, Margar. Okay. And I was like, all right, I like this chick. Somebody was online. Is that the Instagram tag? That's the TikTok end. Yeah, the TikTok bumper. But damn, she did it that time.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Everybody's drinking these. And this is before she bottled it herself. The very next year, in 2009, she founded skinny girl margaritas and sold it in a big ass bottle. And then later, two years later in 2011, sold that to Fortune Brands Beam Global for $100 million. Holy shit. Good God. That's pretty good. That's a good...
Starting point is 00:20:50 That's the sort of growth that makes the sloppy boys LLC jealous. But it is the type of growth that we aspire towards. And this has always been a podcast of aspiration and focus. And you should also mention that we would be jealous of really any growth, but of course, $100 million, yes, as well. Yes, that one we're definitely going to be jealous of. We'll be jealous of prices from that all the way down to $10. What's so perplexing about this whole skinny girl Marg situation is,
Starting point is 00:21:21 I've always wondered, like, I kind of was wrong thinking it was just like a tequila soda with a lot of lime in it. I've had it so different on so many menus. And like, like Casita del Campo and Los Velas, it's just like one-to-one lime to tequila and it's undrinkably sound. I love that place, but I can't drink their skinny marg. Then other places they're put in the agave, which I know it's a natural sweetener. So like, if you're like diabetic, it's better for your glycemic index or something, but it's still got the calories that sugar has. So it's not the skinny. So what is very funny to me is that you went to the source and that what Bethany
Starting point is 00:21:57 Frankel said was essentially the IBA recipe for original classic margarita, but with just the ratio tweets, right? Those are the three ingredients. But she's saying a splash in triple sec instead of an ounce of triple sec. Is it because Bethany Frankel is a particularly thin woman. I've seen those seasons. I've seen those seasons. those seasons of
Starting point is 00:22:22 housewives. So I wonder if it's just skinny girl like she's the skinny girl. This is what we drink? Well, this is, you bring up a good point, Mike, and a lot of these real housewives ladies have tried to pivot into the liquor space. In fact, most of them.
Starting point is 00:22:40 But famously, her friend Sonia, this lady, tried to start tipsy girl many years later leading to a rift in their relationship. Here's Sonia coming up with tipsy girl. You don't get this to you. People who want to be skinny, drink skinny girls. I'm doing fat tipsy bitches.
Starting point is 00:23:00 I mean, I'm not doing skinny bitches. I know, but is that the look you want? It's the look I'm selling. What am I a hypocrite now all of a sudden? I have never said I don't party. I mean, I'm selling to people who want to drink. I'm not saying you have to be a skinny bitch to drink my shit. Does that mean you have to be a fat bitch?
Starting point is 00:23:15 She doesn't know what she's talking about. She's talking about. She's talking about. So here we are, three sloppy boys about to drink skinny girls. Now, what should the ratio be? Because she just says, ice cold patron, fresh squeeze lime, a little dash of triple sec. Okay. So, and if the classic would be 2-1-1.
Starting point is 00:23:40 A 2-1. Is it, do you think we do a full ounce of the lime or do you think we're saying like, is it like tequila with a squeeze of a lime? wedge and then a splash of triple sec. I'm going to want that lime, especially if we're skimping on another ingredient. So I would say like two, one half. Two, one half. Okay, wait, hold on I.
Starting point is 00:24:01 I just brought up IBA World, weird-ass website. And their recipe is actually 50 mil-oh, great, 50 milliliters tequila, 20 mils triple sec, 15 freshly squeezed lime juice. So they're only doing a half. ounce of the lime. Do we do two half splash? Two ice
Starting point is 00:24:27 tequila, half ounce lime, splash triple sec. Let's do it. Let's just get started. Yeah, and if you want to be really skinny, use Qantro. Now, didn't you? I will. Jeff, you sent this thing out that says
Starting point is 00:24:45 orange juice. Yeah, and then I pivoted and I was like, let's just do the viral thing that everybody's going to want us to do. Okay. I also bought orange juice and was like, well, fuck, if this is the clip where the lady, the lady's saying it on the show where everybody's doing this and. Yeah, you're right. You're right.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Also, what she bottled is what she says in the show, like splash of triple sec, right? Right. So I have, OJ, I could do it for round two. And then also, Jeff, you got as a bottle of this skinny official Skinny Girl marks her brand. So we got a way to do taste test there to see if we name. nailed it. Yeah, I think we're going to have to do that. So, so wait, do we, do you, do you, do you want to do? I defer to you two one splash or two half splash. Two half splash. And as a lime freak, that pains me to say. But I, I feel like I want the skinniest possible one. Oh, I also. We need to weigh ourselves first. And at the end of the end of the end of the same. See if we get thinner. Okay. Good. Because I want to be slim. Sillim. the end of this. It's a beach season, babe. So when we go to break,
Starting point is 00:25:53 first thing you do is weigh yourself. And then we come back and resume. Great. Does she say chilled? Are we shaking? Are we just stirring in the glass? She doesn't know what she's doing to. I'm just going to build it in the fucking glass. I'm building the glass.
Starting point is 00:26:10 But traditionally anything with citrus gets shaking. I don't know. Yeah, because you want to wake up the lime. Wake up the lime. Okay, I'll shake. Folks, we'll be right back with first six. Ski-Girl Margarita after this. We have on the back! Skinny girl margaritas in hand.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Let's see him. Beautiful. Beautiful. You know, I should have said, I did such a shitty job tea in this up. I was shaking on ice, pouring on fresh ice, garnishing with a lime wedge, a nice fat lime wedge. Yeah, I didn't do any of that shit, man. Okay. No, I actually made in glass today, in glass.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Hmm. Sips. Sips. Oh, I didn't even weigh myself. Fuck, did you guys weigh yourselves? Yep. I did. 179.60 for me.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Wait, wait, wait. Okay, go ahead, Mike. 179.6.0. Tim? Jeff, I'm telling you, I was like, boy, I'm not in the mood to weigh myself. I just got back from a week of eating hot dogs. And I was like, I hope I can't find my scale. And I found it.
Starting point is 00:27:28 I was like, I hope the batteries are dead. and I went to turn it on. It's like, beep. And I was like, oh, fuck. 22. I hope I'm thin clocking in it. I'm normally 218, but I'm 22. Great.
Starting point is 00:27:41 I'll do a live way here on the feet. 2, 2, 2.2. That's funny, Tim, to be like, oh, I hope it doesn't work. Oh, I hope there's a better. You could also just not tell us. Oh, it's also funny. I could not tell you,
Starting point is 00:27:54 or I could just choose to say that I'm an adult and I don't want to do that. Yeah, you could do that. I've got a, I've got one of these like body mass index scales that don't weigh you unless your socks are off. Oh, it's like the silver, the silver, uh, discs that you have to put your feet on. 1665. Shit. 1665.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Jeff. You're, you're a thin little man. I'm almost twice Jeff's weight. No. Wait. I miss. My slogan is. two jeffs, it's Tim.
Starting point is 00:28:34 Hey, why get one Tim when you get two Japs? All right, we're back in talking drinks. What about Mike? What about Mike? Don't worry about him. Well, I did have the Patron, which is a very delicious. It's funny about fancy tequila, they just have less and less taste. So my triple sec is not coming through whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:29:00 My splash, it wasn't even too small, but it didn't come through. This just tasted me like I have a tequila lime. But I will say, Bethany Frankel, it's nice. I'm not missing. If this is going up against a big margarita with mix back in the day, a corn syrupy mix, I probably fucking like the taste of this shit better. Yeah, dude. Yeah, this feels a little more lemonade-y.
Starting point is 00:29:26 I know it's lime, but... Lemonade. Maybe I put too much lime. But it's got a real, like, tartness to it. We used to go to the Mexico City restaurant, rest and peace. Out there on, out there on Hillhurst. Hillhurst. And they had a, I would get skinny marks there.
Starting point is 00:29:46 And it was just, you know, the no mix version. It was just a, I guess, hint of agave. But, yeah, they were doing like a Tommy's. You know, it was, these came out of the era of mix. But I feel like cocktails have gotten better. and a lot more places are doing tequila triple second lime now. Yeah, we're just like, they're on the menu as skinny margarita or a natural marg, where it's just not corn syrupy mix.
Starting point is 00:30:11 So the thing we're missing, the, like a simple syrup? Yeah. Is that what the agave was meant to be the less? I mean, the IBA version of a margarita is these ingredients, just. Yeah, that's okay. But I think what we're saying here is like, remember when we, In like 2010, we would go to El Chavito and get the scratch margarita, and it seemed fancy to us. They were making it from scratch.
Starting point is 00:30:34 I think in those days, margarets were enormous and they were made of mix. And that's what Bethany Frankel was trying to subvert. You know what's so funny is that makes a lot more sense now with Bethany Frankel was up to. The thing with margaritas is I always picture them in my head. Or when I hear margarita, I think, like, oh, that's a fancy drink. It's, you know, you got to get the blender out. And it's not. I'm thinking of it because of those big, like mixed drinks.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Like, you'd see them in the big, like, hurricane glasses with the stuff coming out of them. Yeah, froze. Yeah. And, yeah, and so I just always, when I think of Margaria is one of your favorites, Jeff. But when you order, I'm always like, for a second, I'm like, boy, Jeff, that's a big, that's going to take a while. I'm like, oh, no, it's a simple drink just because I'm picturing it as a team. You're thinking of El Torito in 1988. Right.
Starting point is 00:31:21 I do them at the house, too, like, especially if I peep are over or something. And I will make, you know, making mix is a lot better than buying like the finest called jug of corn syrup mix. So I am thinking of like, oh, it's getting rid of the simple syrup in what I would do at home. So I was just at this, I rented a house with a pool and a hot tub and stuff. And the fan was hanging out. And the reason I chose the house that I rented, it had a bar inside the house, but with a door that opened right to the pool, it had a bar.
Starting point is 00:31:54 So all week, I was being. little Mr. Bartender Man. And it was very funny because here I am 307 episodes or something into a cocktail podcast. And I think of myself as a little Mr. Cocktail, man. But I was taking... I kind of stocked it with pretty much a full bar
Starting point is 00:32:13 because I bought all the stuff to make Long Island Ice teas and therefore I had every liquor. So then I bought a couple other things. I'm pretty much sitting there with a full bar. So I was just like taking orders, like just like my sister's boyfriend, my brother. his girlfriend, just been like, what do you want? I would take like a five drink quarters and I was like immediately in the weeds.
Starting point is 00:32:31 And I'm like, it's a really hard. Bartending is a very hard job. But it's very different than just doing what we do here. I agree. I've said it before. I'm sure I'll say it again. But like waiting tables and a bartending, it seems I've never really done. I've done busing tables.
Starting point is 00:32:48 It seems like a very difficult job for the type of job where people are like, oh, yeah, I was waiting tables. It's like, that seems like a different. thing to do. Bartending is fucking, you can't, like, I couldn't, I wouldn't be able to hear anybody. I'd be like, lost. Oh, and I, I feel like I would
Starting point is 00:33:05 maybe enjoy mixing the drinks, but I would eat shit of, like, trying to ring people up. Like, the amount of times it's like, open or close, then you have to go do all that shit. Oh. You're doing that to your brother's girlfriend. Open her close. Overclosed? I guess it's free. Yeah, yeah, free. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:21 It'd be great, like, game show to get, like, I don't know. I feel like that, that should be a network thing. Get the three of us, only the three of us, to do a competition where we got to be in a TGI Fridays at rush hour. Yeah. Yeah. Happy hour. Rush hour traffic. That'd be great. If it's, every week is just the three of us competing again and again. And we're fucked. Think of you got to work quick. You got to know the recipes. You got to work quick. You got to have accuracy of poor, Mike with the speed pour. One, two.
Starting point is 00:33:55 You get to do the camp. Like knowing the recipes, I would be on my phone the entire time, like. Texting. Texting me and Jeff? I know. I was looking at TikTok, sir. Host Giuseppe Gonzalez would dock you for that.
Starting point is 00:34:11 This is a good show. And then also, bonus points, flare. Flinging around. Hey, maybe we could add like a ninja warrior element to it too, just to make you kind of. Well, I would look like Michelangelo with those bottles, man.
Starting point is 00:34:29 You know what? It's funny that you, like, learn by doing in my week of making cocktails for my siblings, I did like, I was doing some flare because, you know, I was making like south sides and I was slapping the mint. I was making mojitos. I'm doing all the stuff. Like the, like plus I'm getting drunk. I'm drunk. Like Japan's best bartender doing the like. Yeah, the choppy guy.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Oh, yeah. Does he do ice stuff? Is that what you're talking about, Jeff? Yeah, there's a lot of like chopping ice. But also just the guy that parodyed him. There's so many parodies and I love them all. There's like a little toddler girl. There's like a Lego guy.
Starting point is 00:35:07 But also you serve the drink through like the mist and then the bottle of whiskey goes, and it like slides up super fast. Yeah, yeah. Tim, take it away. Well, I was doing all of that flare and I was showing off and everyone was impressed. And I did the Calpacus method of like, never admit your weaknesses.
Starting point is 00:35:26 If you serve somebody something, you just say, here you go. Don't be like, let me know if it's too sweet. You know, because then you don't do that. Yeah, nobody knows anyway. So I wasn't saying anything, but a lesson that I learned, it was funny. Like I do, just by like, I would take orders. There would be like four different cocktails. And then I would kind of be sweating, making them.
Starting point is 00:35:46 And during the course of the week, one main thing that I learned that you got to be careful with is squeezing my citrus. We had one of those, like an old-timey lemonade press thing to squeeze the citrus. Oh, but is it mounted somewhere or is it handheld? It had its own little stand on the kitchen counter. So I was making my own sour mix. I'm like, I'm going to do lemon, lime, sugar water. Mike, Tim's back there.
Starting point is 00:36:12 And then everyone goes to bed for the night. They hear me in my bed. Jesus, this guy's making drinks in bed now. And then in the next morning he's like, my forearm is so sore and tired from last night. And my prostate is so empty. And the pages of my nudie magazine are all crumpled and crumpled. Help me. No, the lesson that I learned the hard way is I made a huge, I bought a big bag of lemons, big bag of limes.
Starting point is 00:36:40 I was like, I'm making like a gallon of scratch sour mix. It's going to be really good. Oh. I was trying too hard to get every last drop of juice out of the citrus. I squeeze the citrus too hard, and I got like bitter rind juice. And this is not something I've ever thought about until I was squeezing. Like, I was putting my muscle into it. And then when I drank this stuff, I was like, I'm getting some of like pith juice here.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Omer squeezed. So I learned that lesson the hard way. Then I had to buy some store-bought sweet and sour mix to try to balance it out. I thought you were going to say, Tim, with the citrus. I've told this story before as a cautionary tale. My dad, when he was, uh,
Starting point is 00:37:24 he told me, he was like out of college, probably before he had kids and stuff. He was at a party that was like a Christmas party, but it was like a, you know, Christmas in Hawaii type theme. And the bartender,
Starting point is 00:37:35 one of their friends was doing all the, uh, cutting up all the limes all night. He ended up going to the hospital for burns on his hand because of all the, the acid, the, uh, citric acid.
Starting point is 00:37:46 Wow. Yeah, like, you know, the minorist of burns. but, like, still had to go, like, get them figured out a little bit. That's fucked. I know.
Starting point is 00:37:53 You would never think of, like, just lime, so much lime burning your way. A guy I knew, my dad knew that had the same thing, but with fire. He got all burned up in a fire and he had third degree burns on a stick. He was cutting them up. He was cutting up fires. He was chopping up fires. Hey, I'll tell you what. I just took a sip of the branded Bethany Frankel Skinny Girl Margarita.
Starting point is 00:38:15 And it's pretty damn delicious. Really? I'm curious about those nutrition facts because this is sweeter than what I poured. I'm wondering, does it have some sucrose or sucralose or aspartame or what's going on over there? Well, you know, Tim, they don't really say on this bottle. Because in alcohol, I guess you don't have to disclose. But it does say made with blue agave silver tequila, no, made with blue agave silver tequila, triple sec and natural flavors.
Starting point is 00:38:41 A little of salt coming through. That's nice. This is 12.7% alcohol by volume. So this was with the wine and it's sort of in a wine. It's in a skinny wine bottle. So I think this is just sort of like, it's not a margarita. It's a margarita drink. It's a margarita inspired drink.
Starting point is 00:39:01 Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get what you're saying. You know the way that like, there's real juice and then there's like fake, like Sunny D. It's like orange juice inspired orange drink. It's like it's like how like cool. Whip or like Miracle Whip rather It's like it's not mayonnaise per se But it's of the mayonnaise world
Starting point is 00:39:22 It can be put next to mayonnaise But it does what mayonnaise does It goes where mayonnaise goes Do you guys know this lady Bethany Frankl do you recognize her? Yes I do now but I remember like Ten years ago like sitting at home
Starting point is 00:39:41 In the middle of the day with normal old fashioned TV on This lady like launched a talk show that was like an Oprah style talk show the studio audience and it was like I'm just like sitting there on my couch in the middle of a day and it's like ladies and gentlemen Bethany. Oh, that's her. Yeah. Yeah, dude. The show was called Bethany.
Starting point is 00:40:01 I remember that because not knowing what she was from and being like, what? So anyone with any name can just have a show? And the crowd is going crazy. It's Bethany. Oh my God. It's Bethany. That happens to be so much. I, you know, watching TV or whatever.
Starting point is 00:40:16 or even just like YouTube, like just the commercials that come in. Anytime I see like a guy or even a girl, it could be anybody. But what I'm thinking about there's two guys talking to the camera
Starting point is 00:40:31 and they both look kind of like made up and stuff and you're just like, these people aren't, I don't know who they are, but they are huge celebrities. Somebody knows who they're. Yeah, just know it.
Starting point is 00:40:42 I'm sure they have like a multi, 100 million following or whatever. run YouTube and they've got YouTube videos that do like, oh, the craziest stuff. And I just like, no idea. It does not fall on me. I always feel like in my old man era, like, who okayed this?
Starting point is 00:40:58 I didn't okay, Glenn Powell. Yeah, right. Like, when they trot out the new guy that you're supposed to love. I didn't, Glenn, like, Glenn Powell's at least like on major movies and TV, like, the outlets that I realize, like, with TikTok, like TikTok and YouTube, there are so many big celebrities that I just don't think. They have whole empires that you have never interacted with. It's just like, it just won't cross.
Starting point is 00:41:22 A lot of it used to be Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. We're like, how does this person have a $50 million? And it's like, oh, they were on a Nickelodeon show. But now it is just like YouTube native or TikTok native people who aren't from anything. They're from TikTok. Right, right, right. Wait, do you remember back when we all lived together one time we were watching like a primetime network multi-cam sitcom? and all the characters had like primary color t-shirts.
Starting point is 00:41:49 And it was like all the, like the boys were like dad. And then the dad was clearly like probably like one of the lesser known blue collar comedy tour guys. Yeah. Yeah. The name of the show was just his first name. It was like, it was like, Dan. Wait, no, it was. I thought it was going to be like the world according to Dan.
Starting point is 00:42:10 Was it one of those types of it? But that was the name? We said it a lot. It was like... Oh, it was like, it was like, Denny. But I do remember, yeah, just watching a show and be like, why do all these people just have extra large shirts on? A solid colored royal blue t-shirt?
Starting point is 00:42:31 Every, every costumer on a TV show set makes everyone look like Norm MacDonald and Dirty Work. An open button down and then Earth's biggest t-shirt underneath. You still see the fold marks and all the shirts. Fuck, what was that show called? Because it did... We have to look that up. I would have no other way...
Starting point is 00:42:55 I have no idea how to look this up other than, like... I know he was a blue-collar comedy guy. But, like, if we... We don't know any of the names of the people. We can't just put, like, show with a bunch of shirts on it. What... I mean, you could. You could really Google anything if you want.
Starting point is 00:43:13 Wait, what was I guess? Oh, I guess we would just go to like the years we lived in the birthday boys' house and say, what were the major network shows? What were the one season wonders? They'll have names like Leader of the Pack. Should we do another one? I've got an idea here on this one. I'm going to do a little less lime juice because this felt very limy. So I'm going to do less lime juice and not just a splash to triple second.
Starting point is 00:43:40 I'm going to do like a half ounce. Ooh, okay. Okay. I'm going to do OJ instead of triple second. I'm going to do a whole ounce of it. Yeah, I'm going to do that OJ method that we were kind of bandying about earlier. I'll do the old I mentioned too. Yeah, which one is that?
Starting point is 00:43:58 I bought OJ. This was from Hornitos and it's also on Vine Pair. This was the one where we were just trying to find some consensus for what a less sugary margarita would be, non-real housewives affiliated. Two parts tequila. One and a half, lime. A lot of lime. One part, OJ.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Quarter part. Tiny drop. Agave. Oh, I have some of that. I'll do a little tiny drop of that. In your case, I'm going to do that one. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Okay, cool. I'm going to do that one. Folks, we'll be right back with round two after this. If I ever meet some call it, I'd like to sheep. With a variation on a skinny marg. I'm excited for this. A juicy guy. Yours looks green there.
Starting point is 00:45:10 Green. From my, Oh, Jeff, that's very green. The sitcom was called Rodney. Rodney. When we were in college, way back in college, Rodney. And folks, if you Google Rodney, it's the, worst wardrobe ever ever.
Starting point is 00:45:27 The whole, it's like a husband, wife, and his kids and everyone just has like plain clothes, like straight off the rack of Walmart. The first picture when I search Rodney, it's, I guess Rodney is the photo of him. And then the word Rodney in Times New Roman font.
Starting point is 00:45:45 It feels like a TV show within the world of a movie where it's like everyone's watching Rodney. This feels like a, this feels like a, like a show, yeah, that's on like a college network or something. Yeah, so he was a big comedian from the South, Rodney Carrington. Rodney. Well, Sips.
Starting point is 00:46:06 It's funny. Yes, Sips. We all made this. Jerry Meyer was on that show. Ooh. Okay. I did the ounce of OJ and then a squeeze of agave. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Interesting. This is like with the OJ and stuff, this is like a different drink. You know what I mean? This tastes like the, what's the clay pot drink that, uh, canterrito? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that one had the kind of a five alive vibe. Yes. Oh, man, I don't remember that one.
Starting point is 00:46:47 Well, it's traditionally serving a little clay pot, Michael. That one, I remember, I remember the clay pot thing, but I just like I wouldn't. I couldn't remember what was it in that. Robert O'Gene told us about it because it's like in El Paso. I think his mom, it was his mom's favorite drink. This is like a nice big juice bomb. It does feel healthier,
Starting point is 00:47:05 but it's weird to substitute sour mix or even, even normal triple sec. I was using quontro and now I'm using orange juice. And neither of those are like sweet, sweet, you know? So these have all been like pretty dry affairs to me. Yeah. This is a weird one. This is an odd drink.
Starting point is 00:47:23 I wish I had gotten that skinny girl bottle. Do you guys think of triples, not triple sec? Triple sec with the cartoon orange on it is sweet. But like, I don't think of Quantro as sweet because it's 80 proof. I mean, it's triple dry. Yeah, it's 80 proof. It's orangey, but it's, I agree. It's not at all like a DeCiper or a Irum Walker triple sec.
Starting point is 00:47:44 And ditto just orange juice, you know? Yeah. So, I mean, that's what's funny because orange juice, I look, I think we all know orange just can be flabby. It can be flabby in a drink. It can be flabby. It can be flammity. Unless it's acid adjusted as in, remember when the...
Starting point is 00:48:00 Who made us adjust our acid? Was it the Rizzler? No, the Quizler. It was a quisler, yeah. It's going to hurt Joe Saunders. They were going to acid adjust Joe Saunders in a that of... Like the dip from Roger Rabbit. And we had to acid adjust a cocktail.
Starting point is 00:48:21 That's a good episode, folks. go ahead, listen back to the library. Yeah, start from the very beginning. Listen back, folks, if you haven't listened, if you're a patron, you've listened. But if you haven't, if you're not a patroam, get to be a patron and listen to our blowouts behind the paywall. We just did a very fun episode about the emojis.
Starting point is 00:48:40 We talked about emojis for a long time. We certainly did. Folks, if you're not a patron, get to be a patron. Jeff, how does one do that? Tim, there's a lot of ways to be. become a patron. You got to stop and take stock of your life, look in the mirror and make the change. But the easiest
Starting point is 00:48:58 way to do it... More specifically. What's the easiest way for our listener? Well, most people have the most good results going to patreon.com slash the sloppy boys. That's where it really happens. That's where you get to be a patron. You have these people that hear, they're listening to the podcast,
Starting point is 00:49:18 they're loving it. Then when you say this thing about, oh, go to Patreon, dot com slash sloppy boys to subscribe to this other show. People think like, well, I don't do that. Oh, I don't do that. You do. You do now. You do.
Starting point is 00:49:33 You do. I don't do that. You do that. This cocktail podcast you're listening to now. You're thinking you don't tell your friends about it. You think you don't post about it. You do. You do.
Starting point is 00:49:45 You do. You do. You're going to need to do that. I'll tell you what, folks. Don't do it through your friends. phone because then you're giving Apple a piece. You don't need to give Apple a piece. Go to your computer terminal.
Starting point is 00:49:58 Go to patreon.com slash the sloppy boys and that way you're not giving Cooper Tino a piece because the Apple store takes a piece. I don't have to do it through the Apple store. You don't have to. They take a pretty piece. That's just me trying to save you, folks.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Save you, save us, save, and hey, you know what, save three spots of the bar because I want to get another one of these drinks in me. That's good, Mike. Your final thoughts, please. I think this one is interesting. The second version here,
Starting point is 00:50:30 let me take another sip of this. It's not bad. The second thing with the OJ. I just don't know what we're really, like, is the skinny girl the first one or the skinny girl the second one, or the skinny marg, I should say. All in all, these are all orders again,
Starting point is 00:50:49 because there's not, I like margarita. I like margaritas and there's not like, there's nothing in either of these. I'm like, no, I couldn't have these. So this is order again, but I just wish, I just wish that skinny girl margarita tasted like skinny margarita. Yeah. This is a messy.
Starting point is 00:51:07 I can't believe I presented this drink. And here we had two different drinks and we're trying to talk about it. It's messy. Jeff, you don't like the messy stuff. You're always so ones and zeros here where Tim and I get to let the music take us where it will type of thing. No, I hate when you guys do that. This is a good drink. Any version of a marg is good.
Starting point is 00:51:25 it's an order again and again and probably a stone cold classic. It's funny, though, that we had the Bethany version, the Bethany Bar version, the Bethany bottle version, and then this, this juicy OJ version. Whatever this is. Folks, they're all order against. Yay! Oh, Jeff. Timothy, your thoughts?
Starting point is 00:51:47 Same. They're all order against. I would love it of America and the world at large could come up with a consensus. what a skinny mark was. But I got to say, for the most part, if you're looking at a bar menu and they have one, they're trying to tell you something about their house mark. You know, they're telling you, it's shocking.
Starting point is 00:52:08 So if they have the skinny option, and here's what I really want to say. The name sucks. The name's embarrassing. Men, don't be afraid. Don't let this be gendered. You could be a 222-pound guy like me and we're so proudly get the skinny girl, Mark.
Starting point is 00:52:23 Folks, guys, we want you to go out like that Norman Rockwell painting of that guy standing up in town hall saying one skinny margarita, please. One for me. Even though I am a man and I'm masking. Wait, were we supposed to weigh ourselves again and see if we got skinnier? Let's do that now. Michael, your weight? It's like so problematic. Report to your weight.
Starting point is 00:52:49 I went down. Was I 178.6 before? I'm 178.4. So that could have been just because it's a crappy scale that I got off Amazon. I thought you were 179.6. That's what I'd written down. Oh, that is what I had then. So now I'm 178.4.
Starting point is 00:53:08 I think I must have been 178.6 last time. I did not go down a full pound. You're burning calories making these jokes. No, I think this is just like I took something out of my pocket or something. Like I had my phone on me and then I didn't have my phone. I don't know. I think you got to. skinny during the show. And I think that says a lot, Bethany, you're doing great work out there.
Starting point is 00:53:28 Yeah, even though we're putting more volume and putting more mass in me, I'm still skinnier. I can't believe. And me, I gained 0.7 pounds. I went up to 167.2. Oh, shit, me too. I was 223 even. So Bethany backfired. I got fat on your skinny drink. Jeez. Sometimes we're going to go into these, the bar and be like, hey, can I have a margaria? maybe a skinny mark for you. Hey. Yeah, extra skinny, please. I want a skinny mark that's going to make me so thin.
Starting point is 00:54:01 You might put me, you might put me back in the straw bin. The straw bin? The area where the straws go. Oh, yes. Put me with the toothpicks. Yeah, man. And put me with all the used floss. That's your show.
Starting point is 00:54:20 Follow us on some of the ones. media at the sloppy boys where we release these recipes ahead of time if you can't get enough boys you already know it's patreon.com slash the sloppy boys that's like to say that that's where you have that's where you have twice as much fun in your life every week because you get the Wednesday episode here you laugh on Friday there you laugh on Wednesday as well so why don't you jump on in huh bridge the laughs folks folks bridge the laughs folks bridge the laughs bridge the laughs not to be confused with laughing at a scene that takes place at the restaurant Bridges, which is what, you know, happens when you watch, this is Doubtfire because the kinetic scene is that bridging.
Starting point is 00:55:03 And don't get that confused when you laugh at Bridges, Jeff Bridges, in the movie Big Loboski. Yeah. The dude, but bides, man. The dude, man. You know he abides, man. Now, that's a good blow. We talk about the Big Lobowski, the Coen brothers, Clubs. Did you guys see a recent
Starting point is 00:55:23 Hollywood reporter Actors Roundtable that was the most low-hanging fruit ever the reporter was like with all these famous actors When fans come up to you What character What role in one way
Starting point is 00:55:36 What do they say to you And just forcing every famous actor To say the- Do their line And one of the guys is Jeff Bridges And like Jeff, what do people When people approach you, what do they say? And he's like, dude man
