Mossad operative Dany Limour faces restlessly outside the office of Sudan's tourism minister. He's hoping to be granted a meeting with the minister, and he's been waiting hours. Lemur catches his own reflection in a glass panel door and stops to run his hands through his messy blonde hair.
Starting point is 00:00:39 He came straight here after discovering the abandoned holiday resort of Arous on the Red Sea coast. He looks tired and dishevelled from the 850-kilometre journey. But this meeting cannot wait. Arous would provide ideal cover for Mossad's operation to get the Ethiopian Jews to Israel. But to use it, he must first convince the Sudanese minister to lease it to him. Finally, his name is called. Lemoore is ushered into the office of the tourism minister, Colonel Mohamed Mechoub. The Colonel looks up from his desk, narrowing his eyes when he registers Lemoore's disheveled and dirty appearance.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Who are you? What is your business here? I'm a French anthropologist. I've been here in Sudan for a year and a half. I'm writing a paper on desert tribes. Lemoore repeats the cover story he's been using for the past 18 months. But today, there's a new, less rehearsed embellishment to it. But I have to fund my research, so I'm here to discuss a potential business venture. Go on. Lemoore sits and begins his pitch.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I came across an abandoned holiday village on the coast called Arous. I'm told it is now owned by the Sudanese government. It is. And what is your interest in this place? I want to reopen it. The Italians who built it couldn't make a success of it. What makes you think you can? Times have changed.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I'm an experienced diver, and diving is growing in popularity. The coral and the fish in Sudan are extraordinary. People will want to experience this. Enough to keep the fish in Sudan are extraordinary. People will want to experience this. Enough to keep a whole resort afloat. It's a costly business with a lot of overheads. We'll bring other tourists too. During my time here, I've met many people from all over the world. Most of them stay at the Hilton here in Khartoum. But many of them want to see more of Sudan. At the moment, there's nowhere for them to go.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Do you have a company? Lemoore doesn't. But he knows Mossad could invent a fake company if needed. But yeah, of course I have a company. I don't have the accounts with me, but I can provide them. The business is in good standing. Merkoub appears satisfied with his answers. Okay, I'll need to see those accounts.
Starting point is 00:03:06 But you can lease the village for $500,000 a year. Half a million dollars, it's not worth anywhere near that. When was the last time you went there? You went there a year ago. All the infrastructure is there, this is a good deal. The buildings have fallen into disrepair. It will cost at least $100,000 to make them habitable again, and I need to invest in diving equipment and boats.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I'll pay $200,000 a year. Mechgoob leans back in his chair. I've had better offers. You're not the only person interested in a Rus. I can lease it tomorrow for at least $250,000. You'll have to offer more than that. Lemoore shakes his head. I can go to $250,000, but my investors won't go higher.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Lemoore has no idea if he can persuade Mossad to foot the bill. But running a tourist resort with all its related comings and goings would provide Mossad with the ideal cover for its operation to help the Ethiopian Jews. Mergub frowns, it is not enough. Lemur half rises from his seat. Or maybe your other interested party will come up with the money you want. Lemur stands up, but Merhub waves him back down. Very well, you have your deal.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Let us shake on it. You won't regret this, Colonel. We will bring tourists to Sudan, and we will turn Arus into a renowned diving resort, perhaps one of the most remarkable in the world. The two men smile as they shake hands. Merkub's delighted that someone wants to boost tourism to Sudan. Limor's smiling because he's just made the first step in his plan to help the Ethiopian Jews. But now he needs to convince his Mossad bosses
Starting point is 00:04:53 to buy into his crazy, audacious plan. And that could be much harder. From Wondery, I'm Raaza Javri, and this is The Spy Who. In the last episode, Mossad operative Dani Limor began smuggling Ethiopian Jews out of Sudan on commercial flights to Europe. But now, with thousands of them stuck in refugee camps, Mossad is looking to smuggle them to safety by sea. And Lemors just found the ideal cover for the operation, an abandoned diving resort on the coast of the Red Sea.
Starting point is 00:05:40 But to put it to use, he must first convince the Israeli spy agency to invest in setting up a fake holiday village. This is Episode 2, Sun, Sand and Spies. July 1981, the Red Sea coast, Sudan. Dani Lemur and Sudan's tourism minister, Colonel Mohamed Makhgoub, follow a man called Noam through the Aroos holiday village. Noam's here to assess how much it will cost Mossad to refurbish and operate the resort. Rows of whitewashed bungalows with red-tiled roofs are clustered around the shore. Backed by dunes, they look idyllic. But Noam is more focused on all the work to be done.
Starting point is 00:06:37 For European guests, all the accommodation will need air conditioning. He opens the door of a bungalow and points to a light switch. It's detached from the wall with naked wires exposed. And the whole place needs rewiring. Limor notes this. Mossad has accepted his plan to use the resort as cover in principle, but they want a detailed business plan and a budget first. Noam continues adding to the list of expenses. You'll need to build a secure storeroom. Diving equipment is expensive. We can't risk it being stolen or getting damaged.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Colonel Mahgoub looks doubtful about Noam's suggestion. Aroos is miles from anywhere. Limor interjects, Colonel, Noam has many years' experience running a diving resort in Egypt. I was lucky to find him. His advice is invaluable. What Lemoore doesn't tell Mahbub is that Nome also used to be a commando in Shaiatet 13,
Starting point is 00:07:34 the Israeli Navy's special forces unit. He also neglects to mention that the resort Nome ran was on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, when it was occupied by Israel. Mahgub turns to Nome. How long do you think it will be before the resort reopens? I anticipate at least a year. A year before you have guests. It may be able to take a few local guests, which will help cover costs,
Starting point is 00:07:59 but it won't be ready to market to foreign guests before then. Nome is being deliberately vague. As tour operators, they need guests. But as Mossad operatives, the longer the resort remains empty, the easier it will be to operate without raising suspicions. Mergoob, size.
Starting point is 00:08:19 I think I've seen enough. I'll leave you to your work. As the colonel drives off, Lemoore gives Noam a thumbs up. Good job. I think he's seen that we're serious about the plans. But that there's still a lot of work to do. A lot of work. It will take time. Time is the least of our worries. It's the cost of our work I'm concerned about. Do you have an estimate?
Starting point is 00:08:44 I reckon around a million dollars. A million dollars? Mossad's accounts department is going to blow a fuse. Two weeks later, the Israeli Defense Ministry, Tel Aviv. In a meeting room, Lemur is briefing Defense Minister Ariel Sharon on Mossad's plan to evacuate Jews from Sudan by sea. Lemur's bosses at Mossad have ignored the accounts department's objections and approved
Starting point is 00:09:14 his plan. But since the plan also involves the navy, he also needs Sharon's approval. Operation Brothers has four stages. First, trusted Ethiopian Jews search the camps for refugees. Then, when we're ready, we pick them up near the camps and take them to the Red Sea coast. Once there, we use small motorboats to ferry them to a Navy transport ship that's waiting in international waters. The ship then takes them to Israel. Sharon leans forward. Why the shift from air evacuations? We can't get more than a few dozen out at a time.
Starting point is 00:09:54 And there are more than 3,000 in the camps and more arriving daily. By sea, we could evacuate hundreds at a time. Lots of activity around the coast will raise suspicion. That's where Aroost comes in. It gives activity around the coast will raise suspicion. That's where Arus comes in. It gives us a valid reason to be there. We're running a diving resort with Sudanese staff and genuine holidaymakers. And what will these staff and guests think when their diving instructors disappear in
Starting point is 00:10:15 the middle of the night? We tell them there are some Swedish nurses in Port Sudan. When we want some female company, we head down the coast to see them. What about the Sudanese navy? It will be monitoring activity in its own waters. Already taken care of, unfriendly with the head of the navy. We needed a decompression unit before the resort could get insurance, and he gave us one of theirs.
Starting point is 00:10:36 All he wants in return are a few lobsters brought back from our diving trips. Sharon nods and gets up to look more closely at the map of the Sudanese coast that's pinned to the wall. So, this is the resort? Here? Lemur nods, but Charon is no longer addressing him. He's turned to his military intelligence chief. What are your thoughts on his position? It's a good place. It's a very good place. It could be just the place we need when the rest of Sinai is returned to Egypt. It suddenly dawns on Lemur what Sharon's getting at. Israel is in the process of withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula.
Starting point is 00:11:15 When the peninsula returns to Egypt, Israel will lose its listening station on the Red Sea. Sharon clearly thinks that Aroos would be more useful as a replacement for the lost listening station than as cover for Mossad. L'Amour shifts uncomfortably in his seat and regains Charon's attention. Young man, do you have something to say? Yes, I know what you're thinking, but if the military takes over the village, it will jeopardize our entire mission.
Starting point is 00:11:44 All eyes in the room turned to Limor. Sharon's a tough military strategist, and few people challenge his decisions. But Limor's not willing to lose Arus. The lives of thousands of Jews are at risk if we don't get them out of the refugee camps. These are our people. They have risked their lives because we said we would get them to the promised land camps. These are our people. They have risked their lives because we said we would get them to the promised land. Our Rus is our cover. If we lose it,
Starting point is 00:12:10 they may never get to safety. It will take us at least a year to find an alternative, and by that time many of our brothers and sisters in the camps will be dead. The room falls silent as everyone waits to see how Sharon reacts. Okay, I understand.
Starting point is 00:12:29 The state of Israel needs to be secure, but it must also offer security to fellow Jews. You have my approval. L'Amour smiles. Against the odds, Operation Brothers is happening. But if L'Amour is going to pull off the most ambitious mission of his career, he needs backup. Four weeks later, Tel Aviv. Lemur ashes his four recruits into an apartment. Waiting inside is Mossad director Yitzhak Hoffi.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Limor introduces his recruits. These are my men, Ruby, Shmulik, William, Louis. All four of the men speak a foreign language and have diving experience. Three are also former Chi-Tet 13 commandos. But right now, all they know about the mission is that they'll be working as diving instructors while secretly helping Jews in Africa. They've not even been told they're to work for Mossad. It's time we told the four of you why we've brought you here.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Major General Hoffy will put you in the picture. The four recruits exchange glances. Hoffy's presence confirms their suspicions that this is a Mossad operation. But they remain quiet and wait for him to speak. This is not a straightforward intelligence operation. You will be smuggling Ethiopian Jews out of Sudan. People smuggling is the most dangerous kind of trafficking, more dangerous than drugs or weapons.
Starting point is 00:14:08 And you'll be doing this in a country that is hostile to Israel. Lemoore continues the briefing. Each of you will need to assume a new identity as a foreign national. If you are arrested by the Sudanese or quizzed by the guests at the resort, you must convince them that you are Europeans. You will not be Israelis anymore. You will all be sent to your assumed country of origin to familiarize yourself with it before you join the operation.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Any questions? Lemore looks at the four men. Only one has something to say. Sounds like a dream job to me. We get to hang out in Europe for a few months, and then we get to dive in the Red Sea. L'Amour smiles. Mossad's psychologists assessed these four men
Starting point is 00:14:56 and deemed them too individualistic for the job. L'Amour's overruled them. He sees this as a plus. You'll also be trained in boat repair. Heh, it just gets better. The mood has lightened, but then Hoffie points at one of the recruits. You, stand up.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Come over here. The recruit does as instructed. Hoffie looks him up and down. Take off your sandals. The agent slips as instructed. Hoffy looks him up and down. Take off your sandals. The agent slips them off. Hoffy picks one up and holds it in the air. Nimrod sandals, Israeli sandals, sandals which will get you killed.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Nothing goes with you that can be traced back to Israel. No music for your walkman, no Israeli clothes, and no Nimrod sandals. Hathi hands the sandal back to the recruit. If your cover is blown, not only do you end your days in a Sudanese prison, but thousands of our Ethiopian brothers and sisters will die in refugee camps. Lemur looks at his recruits. So, now you know what's really at stake. Does anybody want out?
Starting point is 00:16:11 They all shake their heads. No one's backing out. Around the same time, Tawawa refugee camp, near Gadaref, Sudan. Eight-year-old Zaudo Mulu watches as his mother pulls down the tarpaulin cover of their makeshift home and anchors it with a rock. It's still early, I know, Zaudo, but we can't risk being out after sunset. Mulu and his mother made a long and dangerous journey across war-torn Ethiopia to reach Sudan. They heard there was a way to Israel here. But now they are marooned in a refugee camp that is crowded, filthy and lawless, especially after dark when even the aid workers won't stay.
Starting point is 00:17:00 I know it's hard, but it won't be for long. Soon the angels will come and take us to Jerusalem. What's that? What's happened? Why is that woman crying? Remember the boy nearby who was starving? Mulu nods. The medics tried to help, but it could not save him. It must be his mother crying. Don't worry. This won't happen to us, help is coming. We must pray for the child. Yid-Gadal. Mulu utters the first word of the Jewish prayer of morning, but his mother puts her hand over his mouth. Not here, Sado, not out loud. Death is all around them, but if they're discovered to be Jewish, they will be at risk of violence, arrest, torture, even execution. To leave Ethiopia without permission is a crime. To leave to try and get to Israel is treason.
Starting point is 00:17:54 So instead of speaking out loud, mother and son silently mouth the prayer. And even that feels dangerous. Three months later, Arous holiday village. It's the day before the first sea evacuation, and just off the shore, two of Mossad's diving instructors are preparing for the Israeli boats that will pick up the refugees. One pilots the diving boat carefully towards the coral reef and slows the engine. The other instructor dives into the water and swims towards the reef. Ask me for stick. The pilot hands over a fluorescent light stick.
Starting point is 00:18:38 The diver attaches it to a metal rod that's anchored in the water by a concrete base. The coral here is sharp enough to rip through the underside of a boat, so the resort team has put in these rods to guide the Israeli navy boats safely through the reef to the shore. But if they are to be of use during the night time evacuation, they need to be lit up, which is where the light sticks come in. Once the light stick is in place, the two instructors move on to the next rod.
Starting point is 00:19:12 What the... The pilot ducks as something swoops towards the boat. It's a large osprey, a bird of prey, and it's decided to perch on the next metal rod. And as a danger, it will sink its hooked beak into the divers bare hands. The pilot tries to scare it away. Shoo! Get out of here! Go on! Get away! The pilot starts the engine causing the osprey to take flight. The moment of danger has passed but birds of prey are not their main concern. They are operating in hostile territory and need to stay vigilant.
Starting point is 00:19:49 One small slip is all it will take for them to become the Sudanese military's prey. The next day, to Wawa refugee camp, Sudan. Eight-year-old Zaudo Mulu's mother beckons him to follow her into one of the camp's makeshift tents. Inside, an older woman sits with a small bag beside her. The older woman looks up, startled. What are you doing here? I know you were to be taken to Jerusalem tonight. Please, take my son with you.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Mulu's mother pushes him towards the woman. Tell them he is your son. Seeing her desperation, the older woman nods. No, mother, please. I don't know this woman. I want to stay with you. Soto, you keep quiet. You must go with this woman now.
Starting point is 00:20:54 We will meet again in Jerusalem. She kisses him quickly and returns to her own shelter. There she sits and stares out into the dark night. Moments later she sees the woman holding Mulu's hand as they sneak out of the camp. She watches as they head towards the road beyond the camp's periphery. Somewhere on the other side she imagines the white men who will take them to Israel are already waiting. The same night, the desert near the camp.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Lemur leads his team's convoy of vehicles to the desert rendezvous where they've arranged to collect the refugees. He stops his pickup truck. Lemur gets out and looks around anxiously. The place appears empty and eerily quiet. He's about to get back in the vehicle and double check his map when something stirs in the darkness. Out of the shadows, scores of Ethiopian refugees begin to emerge from hiding. Lemur raises his hand to signal to the vehicle behind him to start loading them onto trucks. He watches as men, women, and children
Starting point is 00:22:14 climb silently into the waiting trucks, packing themselves in tight without a sound. Within minutes, everyone is on board and the refugees hidden beneath sheets of tarpaulin. The convoy sets off on its 800 kilometer journey to the coast. A few minutes later, at the very back of the truck, Zaudo Mulu sits under the tarpaulin, wedged in beside the woman who's pretending to be his mother. Everybody remains quiet. It's hot and cramped.
Starting point is 00:22:56 They are packed in so tight that even when the truck jolts, nobody moves. Mulu is scared, but tries to distract himself with thoughts of Jerusalem. He's heard the streets are paved with gold. He imagines each sway of the truck is carrying him closer towards its splendor. And soon nods off to sleep. Several hours later, Mulu snaps awake as the truck comes to a halt and the refugees start
Starting point is 00:23:32 to get out from under the tarpaulin. The emerge is blinking into the semi-darkness. It appears to glisten and turn white at the edges. The air tastes almost salty. The woman takes him by the hand and pulls him towards the shore. Mulu has never seen the sea before, and the noise it makes scares him. As they approach the shoreline, Mulu sees two white men emerging from the water. What are they? One of them has blonde hair and a wild, unkempt beard.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Mulu's never seen anyone who looks like him. Is he an angel? The blonde man bends down and hugs Mulu, who notices he has tears in his eyes. Then the man lifts him up and carries him through the water to the inflatable boat. A few feet away, an Israeli naval commando guides an inflatable motorboat full of refugees through the coral reef,
Starting point is 00:24:42 using the light sticks for navigation. As they head out, the waves get stronger. Terrified Ethiopians cling to the sides of the boat. Suddenly, one woman loses her grip and is washed overboard, disappearing beneath the waves. The commando darts to the back of the boat and reaches into the water just in time to grab hold of her arm. Hold on! Don't let go! He heaves her out of the water and back onto the water just in time to grab hold of her arm. Hold on! Don't let go!
Starting point is 00:25:05 He heaves her out of the water and back onto the boat. The immediate danger has passed, but until they reach the navy ship 25 kilometres away, it's not over. One hour later, Dani Lemur leads the final boatload of refugees across the deck of the Bat Galeem and down into its brightly lit galley. All of the 170 Jews are now safely inside and being given food and drink by the Bat Galeem's crew.
Starting point is 00:25:42 On the ship speakers, music plays. Limor watches as the men, women and children gaze in awe of the electric lights and point at the ship's speakers. Some of the refugees start to perform a traditional dance, shrugging their shoulders and jutting their chests to the beat. Others crouch down and kiss the ground. This ship and its amenities are a world away from the isolated and impoverished villages they left behind in Ethiopia. Seeing Lemur watching, one exhausted-looking Ethiopian calls out to him, Is this Jerusalem? No, this is not Jerusalem. But when you leave this ship, you will be in the land of Jerusalem.
Starting point is 00:26:25 Lemoore watches the dancing a moment longer, then leaves to return to shore. Operation Brothers' first sea evacuation is a success, but it's only the start. Now the Exodus can really begin. the exodus can really begin. A few days later, Idareff, Sudan. In his office, the local head of Sudan's secret police pours Limor a cold drink and sits with him. It's good to see you again. I'm keen to hear more about the resort,
Starting point is 00:27:06 but also I think you may be able to help me with something. Using his cover as owner of a tourist resort, Lemore has made it his business to get to know as many Sudanese officials as possible. And that includes the secret police. He figures it's safer to have them on side. So, Lemore is keen to appear to help however he can. Of course. Are you in need of a holiday?
Starting point is 00:27:32 No. I don't think diving is for me. But you do know many people. Tell me, do you know any Jews? Yes, of course. In France, I studied with Jews. Some of my friends. And what are they like, these Jews? Like any other person. Some are good, some are bad, some good looking, some not so good looking. But do you know any black Jews? L'amour, feign surprise. A black Jews? No, never heard of black Jews. I've heard there are some in North Africa with darker skin. Is that what you mean? No
Starting point is 00:28:05 Not dark skin black skin totally black like me. I've heard there are black Jews in the camps here They come with the other refugees, but then they disappear at night Limor puts his drink down and maintains his cool They just disappear You sure? Yes Some of these Zionist bastards come to the camps and kidnap them in the night. They then use them as cannon fodder in the Israeli army. They put them in the front lines so they get killed first.
Starting point is 00:28:35 L'amore's used to hearing such outlandish fantasies about Israel, but he acts surprised. That's incredible. How do you know this? There are people on the ground. They inform incredible. How do you know this? There are people on the ground. They inform me. But we will catch these Zionists. Lemoore picks up his drink again, raises it, and looks the secret police chief in the eye. Well, I wish you luck. He takes another sip, and the cold liquid seems to burn in the back of his throat.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Sudan's secret police know the Ethiopian Jews are vanishing and they suspect Israeli involvement. They might have little information to go on, but now he and his team will have even less margin for error. The Resort 1982, Arous, Sudan. In the dining hall, Lemur is playing backgammon with an Egyptian military officer. The resort is not officially open yet, but word has spread in Sudan's diplomatic circles and guests have started to trickle in. Among them is this Egyptian soldier. He's part of a group that's been on a joint military exercise with the Sudanese army in the surrounding desert. We never expected to find a place like this in Sudan. It's very good.
Starting point is 00:30:11 The soldier gestures towards the white cloth-covered tables with blue upholstered chairs and through the open arches towards the sea. But the peace of the moment is shattered by noise from the kitchen. Lemur stands. One moment please, sounds like there's something I need to deal with. Lemur enters the kitchen. Inside, the resort's kitchen manager, Abki, is issuing orders to his Sudanese team. Take out the pot, boil water, add soap and start scrubbing the walls. Is there a problem with We've got guests. Abki is new at the resort, but he's used to running kitchens.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Before taking this mission, he ran the kitchen at Mossad headquarters. Yes, yes, there is a problem. This place, this place is filthy. If these men don't start scrubbing, your guests risk being poisoned. Okay, okay, okay. Just get them to work, but keep the noise down. We don't want the guests thinking we can't run this place. Namur returns to the soldier to find him reminiscing with a colleague about the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Our men fought bravely in that war. We showed those boastful Israelis what Arab soldiers are made of. Namor sits down and quickly changes the subject. Sorry for the interruption. Our chef here is very particular. Now, is it my turn? Namor rolls the dice and moves one of his counters, aware of the need to keep his guests focused on the game.
Starting point is 00:31:47 For if any of them sense the resort is run by Israelis, let alone Mossad, then it'll be game over for him and his recruits. Two months later, the coast near Arous, nighttime. Gad Shimron heads to his position as lookout. He is Lemur's latest recruit, a 32-year-old former journalist who's already had two stints in Mossad. He got fired the first time, quit the second, but Lemur persuaded him to come back for a third time. Chimron finds a spot in the hills overlooking the shore and takes out his binoculars. The
Starting point is 00:32:36 navy boats are waiting at the moonlit shore and while this location is remote, there's still a risk of being spotted by smugglers or local bedouin. Shimron raises his binoculars and focuses on Limur. He's on the beach helping a large group of Ethiopians into life jackets. Then he pans slowly away from the beach to the ridge above. He stops. Something's moving. Shit. Shimron focuses in and sees people moving just a few hundred meters from the beach.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Shimron to Lemur, come in. Go ahead. You have guests on the ridge. Copy. Keep your eyes on them and keep me posted. Shimron watches the men through his binoculars. On his two-way radio he hears Lemur telling the rest of the team to hurry. Quickly now, we need to launch the boats as soon as possible. Simran now has a clear view of the men on the ridge. Danny, I've got them in my sights now. They're carrying guns and they look like soldiers. Not close.
Starting point is 00:33:42 A few hundred yards, but they can see you. And they're headed towards the beach. And holding their guns like they're ready to shoot. Then we need help getting everyone on the boats. Can you get down here without being spotted? On my way. Shimron turns and starts running. Shimran arrives at the beach to find just one boat left. The final 20 Ethiopians are on board, but the vessel is stuck in the sand.
Starting point is 00:34:15 He runs through the water to Lemur, who is trying to push the boat out of the shallows. Gad, take that side and give it all you've got! The refugees are getting nervous. They can sense his and L'Amour's growing panic. Chimron pushes with all his might. The boat doesn't move. He tries again. This time the boat shifts,
Starting point is 00:34:40 but then a voice calls out from behind them. Get your hands up! Chimron turns to see soldiers approaching and pointing Kalashnik out from behind them. Get your hands up! Shimron turns to see soldiers approaching and pointing Kalashnikovs at them. Shimron gives the boat one final push, enough to get it into deep water, enough for the pilot to start the engine. As the boat starts to move,
Starting point is 00:34:58 Shimron clambers on board. On the shore, Nemours slowly raises his hands into the air. He knows he needs to deflect the soldier's attention away from the boats. I don't understand Arabic. English! English! I'm a diving instructor! The soldiers keep their guns trained on him.
Starting point is 00:35:20 Don't move or we shoot! In his peripheral vision, Nemours sees the final boat moving away. But one of the soldiers spots it too. The soldier starts running through the shallow water brandishing his gun. The soldier nearest to Lemur shouts again. Stay where you are or I shoot! Lemur ignores him.
Starting point is 00:35:40 He turns and runs after the soldier who's about to fire on the boat. He turns and runs after the soldier who's about to fire on the boat. The soldier pulls the trigger just as Lemur barrels into him. A burst of gunfire rips into the air. Lemur and the soldier crash onto the shore and start wrestling in the sand. Within seconds, the other soldiers catch up and grab Lemur. to catch up and grab Lemoore. On the last boat speeding away, Chimron checks to see if anyone's been injured. Miraculously, the spray of bullets missed everyone.
