The Squeeze - Kevin Jonas: Embracing Change

Episode Date: November 19, 2025

In this week’s episode, Tay and Taylor are joined by Kevin Jonas! Kevin opens up about life on his current tour and dives into his perspective on the younger generation and s...ocial media, along with the story of how he taught himself to play guitar growing up. He also drops some exciting news about the upcoming Camp Rock 3, which leads Taylor to tell the hilarious story of how he auditioned for the original Camp Rock… and didn’t get the part. Kevin gets candid about the mental side of touring, reflecting on the post-tour blues and how seeking therapy after his last tour helped him navigate that transition. He also talks about his wife and daughters, what family life looks like for them, and whether his girls have any interest in singing or acting in the future. To close, Kevin gives us a first look into his new single Changing, sharing the story behind the song, his first-ever solo performance, and whether more solo projects might be in his future! Be sure to follow Kevin on https://www.instagram.com/kevinjonas/You can stream A Very Jonas Christmas here: https://www.hulu.com/watch/6eec7c0b-d249-4341-b538-23455dc97efcTo email us your questions or share your story, you can reach out to lautner.thesqueezepodcast@gmail.comBe sure to rate, review, and follow the podcast so you don't miss an episode! Plus, follow us on all of our socials:The SqueezeInstagram: https://instagram.com/thesqueeze/TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@thesqueezepodcast Tay LautnerInstagram: https://instagram.com/taylautner/TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@mrstaylautnerAmazon Storefront: https://urlgeni.us/amazon/FDXj7 Taylor LautnerInstagram: https://instagram.com/taylorlautner/TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@taylorlautnerTo learn more from The Lemons Foundation, follow https://instagram.com/lemonsbytay/ and visit https://lemonsbytay.comEpisode SponsorsFor a limited time, go to tonal.com to get $1000 off your Tonal purchase plus a free four-year warranty.Visit gruns.co and use code SQUEEZE at checkout for up to 52% off your firstorder. The RealReal is the world’s largest and most trusted resource for authenticated luxury resale. Starting point is 00:00:27 production Teenage Heartthrobs the Jonas brothers, Nick, Joe, and Heaven. It seems that these boys simply can't put a foot wrong right now. Kevin, welcome to the squeeze. Oh, thank you so much for having me. When we were younger, we did not understand how to celebrate the wins. It was always the next thing.
Starting point is 00:00:45 And that's part of the young hustle. We say this all the time. It's like, not everyone can breathe at 30,000 feet. When the band broke up, I really didn't know if we would ever make music again. I didn't know I could have depression, and I did. But then I didn't know my antennae any outside of this band. Well, I'm Kevin Jonas from the drums' votes. It's like, yeah, well, that's who I am.
Starting point is 00:01:00 That's my job. Once that's gone, oh, God, I've been doing this since I was 15 years old. Who am I? I actually sought out a therapist after our last tour. To be honest, I just was not in a good spot. I think the serotonin drop was just maybe too much. I think I had to do almost to do like a full, like a reset, like a hard reset. Then I was like, oh, thank God.
Starting point is 00:01:20 I miss this. I don't sing lead in the songs, just really Joe and Nick. I've always sang. They always encouraged me. It was never that. It was myself, always kind of holding myself back, not knowing if I was ever feeling like it was right. Or if I could do it.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Just being honest. Like, I didn't feel like it was, I was good enough. This moment, my God, I am blackout. I'm super nervous. I'm just hyper-focused on just singing and getting through it. Get through it. I couldn't even play the guitar in the very beginning of the song, which is what I do.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Do you know immediately? Yeah, I crushed that. Zero. No, like, I just. And then I saw the video of Danielle singing. it happened and that's when it like I was like in tears after people ask so why now why are you doing it honestly because I found the song are you wanting to do more solo stuff as of now I am Kevin welcome to the squeeze oh thank you so much for having me we are so excited to have you and so honored to have you
Starting point is 00:02:45 with your crazy schedule right now I can't believe you're able to fit this in so thank you no problem Full disclosure for everyone listening, I've moved it five times today already on them. So, you know, luckily, um, you can move at six. We can start over. We'll be back here in an hour. Unintentionally had to move it. We got out of the hotel a little slower than expected this morning. And that happens.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Yeah, for sure. It honestly worked out well for us because we've been having some plumbing issues this morning. So it honestly, the timing worked out. Great. Isn't it great being adults? And they say, like, buy a house. It'll be great. Literally, you know, a toilet that just doesn't work.
Starting point is 00:03:24 No, no. And this, we've been having quite a few issues. Yeah, I woke up to a text from my neighbor being like, hey, are you draining your pool because there's a lot of water coming out? Our driveway is a river right now. We're about to have to jackhammer our driveway after this. Oh, no. So I am.
Starting point is 00:03:44 It was actually good that you pushed it a bit because we were in the midst of dealing with that. Well, you know, I did it for you. guys. Thank you. Thank you. So thoughtful. So thoughtful. You're so welcome. Let's just start with tour. You're on tour. We've been keeping up with all the videos and stuff. We've actually, fun story. We've tried to come. Well, I guess it's not a fun outcome, but yeah. Yeah. But we've tried to come see you guys twice. And twice, if not three times, honestly. And never have been able to just because actually once we tried to come see you in all. Please tell me it's not us. No, it's not you.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Okay. No. I was like, what? No, the first time I think we tried to come see you and this wasn't this tour, right? Okay. I feel like you guys like haven't stopped. So I don't really know. We like to tour.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Yeah. So I don't know when this was. You should interview my wife about how she's coping with me being gone. Oh, great, great. We'll have her all next to do a nice little two part. But no, I think it was sometime last, sometime last year we were going to go to Austin and our flight got delayed, delayed, delayed, and then canceled. But we were flying there the same day as the show,
Starting point is 00:04:53 so we didn't end up making it. And then when you guys were out here last time, we were planning on going, and then something came up for work. And so we ended up being out of town, all the dates that you got, it's just, it hasn't. But we're dying to come see you.
Starting point is 00:05:05 That's the point. Well, what are you doing? What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Seriously, what are you doing for Thanksgiving? We may be in, yeah, we may be in Idaho, unfortunately. Okay, okay Because I was going to say We're playing Vegas that weekend
Starting point is 00:05:23 Oh, are you? Which is like kind of fun Yeah Turned that weekend to something a little Yeah Yeah, we're playing the Las Vegas show Or come to New York during the holidays Because we'll be back in the city
Starting point is 00:05:33 Oh, you don't have to twist Hay's arm on that one I'm trying to get Taylor to take me there For a little bit of time You know, we're young, we're married, no kids So I'm like, why not go like live there? Yeah, what are you doing? Get into New York Come on.
Starting point is 00:05:47 out to Jonas Brothers. Walk around, eat some pizza. Yeah. Do you want to tell me your funny story? You should definitely come to our Long Island or UBS, like final night of our tour show. That would definitely be fun. I want to explore East Coast more because I'm like born and raised California girl and I've only like, I've only started going to New York like two years ago. It was my first time ever going.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Oh, you're not ready. It's New York, New York, you need a, Taylor, you've done it, right? But like you need, you need like a good six week. I'm going to live in New York moment. You have to do it. Yeah. Six week is totally fine for me. That's what I want.
Starting point is 00:06:24 That's all I want. Because then you realize quickly you're like, yeah. Okay. You either absolutely love it or you're like, cool, I've had my fill, get me back to my space. Yeah. So East Coast for me has always been home. I get made fun of even by the guys constantly. Like that I'm in this movie that we're about to release.
Starting point is 00:06:42 the one that still lives in New Jersey It's like, yeah, that's me New Jersey's home for me, East Coast My wife is from there And me and Daniel, after about a year of marriage bouncing around on tour, I looked at her, I was like,
Starting point is 00:06:58 okay, so it's either you don't have a support system and you're just with me or we're gonna, I'm gonna move back to New Jersey And so we've been there ever since. Wow. Oh, wow. That's great. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:10 I want to go there. I've never been there. No? No. Oh, come over. We'd love our house. It's awesome. I have funny issues too.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Where are you at in the tour, like lengthwise? So we should, it would have been that this is like our last week actually. Oh, wow. But luckily, you know, the tour took a different, like a really interesting journey. So yes, last tour we did was two years ago. It feels like it was yesterday, but we went to Europe and stuff, so it feels like we've always been on. So we did the five albums One Night Tour, which was incredible and super great and tons of music, like 60-something songs every night. It was just a lot.
Starting point is 00:07:51 And then we did that, and then we are on this one now, and we just didn't really expect it to go the way it did. We opened the tour at MetLife. We're supposed to go through November 14th. And we had all these special guests come out, which was incredible. people from our 20 years of music and the journey. We had Switchfoot, Dean Lewis, who was on the new album, Jesse McCartney, who was one of the first people we ever opened for, which was really cool.
Starting point is 00:08:19 You guys open for Jesse? Oh, yeah, no, that was... So we opened for Jesse, and he gave us, like, our first shot at, like, opening for him on his tour, which was a real big deal. And it was a trade-off so that he could go on tour with Backstreet when they came back in Europe. Oh, okay. When they did the Incomplete project. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:08:37 So it was like our management tradeoff. Like we were just the recipients of it. So we had Jesse come out. And then, of course, we had Demi as well come out. And it was just kind of blew up the internet there for a couple days. Oh, yeah. It's just been really beautiful. And then after that, it just was like, hey, Joe was like, who else can we get?
Starting point is 00:08:56 And then all of a sudden, it's just become this thing where these amazing people have just been like revolving door on the tour and coming through. And it's been so fun. Our bands had to work so hard to like learn all of them. songs every day. Like, it's incredible. And so do we, but like, it's just friends. And, you know, them had all time low. And we've just had everyone. You've had a lot. You've had multiple friends of ours have come out with you guys.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Yeah. Christina Perry was incredible. Oh, yes. Yeah. Of course. Christina Perry was incredible. There's just so many. Yeah. You guys are crushing it. I have to, we'll have to get out there.

Starting point is 00:14:28 or if this is just actually happening because I never know what to believe or if like everything's just AI. Is there another camp rock happening? Oh, yeah. We just rock production on it. So not only are we doing this tour, releasing the albums that we've done this year. We finished a Christmas movie in January, which comes out on the 14th, comes out this week.
Starting point is 00:14:47 We just came from the premiere last two days ago. We're in it right now. And then we filmed Camp Rock while on tour. We had a week and a half section of the tour that we blocked off to go in. We're executive producing it, we're filming it, and it's going to be really cool to pass the baton to a new
Starting point is 00:15:07 generation, and obviously we're in it and a part of it, but like, these kids are so talented. I think it has a lot to do with, like, TikTok. And, like, the way they can, like, dance and perform, they're like light ears ahead of all of us younger generation guys that, like, started early. We're like, oh, you're, like, you're actually talented. It's so funny how that happens. I felt the same way. I used to do martial arts.
Starting point is 00:15:33 And now... Oh, I'm aware. And now seeing kids that were my age when I was doing it, they're like 10 times better than I was. And I was like a four-time world champion. It's like, this isn't fair. Something's happening. I think it's access to content, right? I think like just even awareness to it.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Like, I see this with guitar. Like, my daughter's, like, performing and they would like it and they're interested in it. I'm like, cool, we're going to shut the laptop now. But seeing how these kids can play and the songs they're learning, just if I had the tools from technology that they had when I was 16, I learned to teach myself, I taught myself guitar at home because I had strep throat for a week, and I was bored because there was no streaming television,
Starting point is 00:16:20 and blues was the only thing on Nick Jr. Yes. And so, like, I had to, I just got unbelievably bored. I had a teach yourself guitar book that was just, in the house and a random guitar and that's how I started. Yeah. So, thank you, struck her up. But, you know, and then I faked being sick for the next week so I could stay home and keep
Starting point is 00:16:39 learning. I love that. But, like, that's what I had. I didn't have a one-on-one AI teacher on the computer that can, like, walk me through what I'm doing wrong and how to play about it. Like, it's just wild. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Speaking of Camp Rock, can I tell you a hilarious story? You can tell me all the stories, please. Okay. So. 2007. I was in between doing like Shark Boy and Lava Girl and Cheaper by the Dozen. And I was kind of, I was in between those. It was before Twilight. And this was a point in my career where I almost quit acting because I was just having a rough patch. I just could not book anything. And it just, it felt I was so lucky and blessed because it felt, I was so easy at first, but then I had these like three dry years where I just, I couldn't get anything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:38 But then this audition came around for this Disney Channel movie called Camp Rock. Please tell me you auditioned for Shane Gray. I did not only auditioned. I went through probably five callbacks and made it to the final three guys. guys. Oh, my God. And did chemistry reads with everybody, including Demi. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:18:08 And what's also hilarious about this is I could not sing at all or dance. And in the auditions, they made us, we had an acting portion, a singing portion, and a dancing portion. So that's probably ultimately, well, well, no, it's not ultimately why I didn't get it. But anyways, point of the story, I felt really good. good about it and I was so excited and because I just knew that this was going to be like the biggest thing and it had been a sex since I worked and I felt so good about it and I remember getting a call from my agent saying hey Taylor we got bad news for you and I was like
Starting point is 00:18:49 what's that and they go they're going with the Jonas brothers and I was like what they weren't even there. There are three people. Because how is it possible? Because at this point it was just one role. There was just one guy role and they're like, I have a story for you after this. So I just want you to know that you three broke my heart and I still hold it against you, but it was the right choice. Did we help you find therapy? Because maybe
Starting point is 00:19:20 I forget that. I forgive you. I'm pretty sure if you would have gotten camp rock you would have not gotten Twilight and if you did not gotten Twilight you would not meant Tay so here we are instead of saying you broke my heart you could just say thank you precisely
Starting point is 00:19:41 but here's the crazy part so we as Collective Jonas Brothers at the time things were like just starting to like kind of bubble right the band was like just starting to become a little bit well-known Not in any capacity in the sense of what it became.
Starting point is 00:20:00 But it was just like, well, they got this song like Year 3,000, but there's SOS, which is like their music. So it started to like do this thing. And people started coming to our little-ass shows, which is great. We start working with Hollywood at this point, so it's good. Things are going well. Hollywood, part of Disney music group. And then Joe gets an audition request for this movie.
Starting point is 00:20:24 and he does it and we film it because we've never done this like that was not our thing right yeah yeah we had done some acting early days whatever in New York and that was actually how I got my star
Starting point is 00:20:35 blah blah blah but it was never like we weren't the kids in L.A. doing the self-tapes and doing you know we're doing you know you can you do a self-tape we filmed this self-tape in a dark dark like hotel room on a flip vid remember those and and it was
Starting point is 00:20:51 their exact response was what is this question mark like it was horrible like absolutely and it's us like I'm holding a lamp trying to show Joe in the light like dancing
Starting point is 00:21:04 who he cannot I know he's a good dancer I'll just say that so I'll get you out later but but then he gets the offer he's like we would like Joe to do the movie
Starting point is 00:21:18 and they come and they have a sit down like our management my dad, Phil, come sit down with us and John and are like, so Joe got the movie, but it means that we have to pretty much stop making, you know, touring for a little bit and doing some things. And pretty much we were like, no, we're not going to do this anymore.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Yeah. And we were like, no. And so Joe was like, no, I just won't do it. He was sad. I think he really wanted it too. But he's like, I know for the greater good of the thing, like, no. Yeah. And then my dad called Gary Marsh over at Disney Channel.
Starting point is 00:21:51 It was like, hey, what if it was a band? And they, like, figured it out and that we were the reason to send them to camp and the whole thing. So out of desperation, there was, I'm sorry we broke your heart, but you know what? It makes me happy that you auditioned. I would like to see those audition tapes. Oh, I would pay a lot of money to see that. I wish we could find the one of Joe doing the audition. It would, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:22:19 Oh, my gosh. That is such a fun fact. We need to rewatch that movie, especially now since there's going to be... I was like, what? My audition tape? No, no, no, sorry. Camp Rock. We need to...
Starting point is 00:22:28 Yeah, you know, it's got its moments. You know, definitely one and two. I will say number three is going to... Disney's... People are going to be very excited. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. I'm already excited.
Starting point is 00:22:40 I also feel like I can't say... It was wild getting back on set. Oh, I imagine. Like, walking up to the final jam stage, and like, it looks like it, how it looked back then. Like, the camp. Like, it was crazy. Like almost 20 years later?
Starting point is 00:22:54 Oh, yeah. It was like, whoa. And it was like, kind of like overwhelming. Yeah. You know? And so it was great. That's really cool. Wow.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Little, little child me is very excited for this. I also feel like I can't say camp rock without literally thinking, doing that with my life. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:11 It's iconic. You know, it's got our moments. We grew up. We grew up through it all, you know. I love it. So, obviously, you're on tour right now. We've been talking about that. And we honestly have a lot of musicians on the podcast.
Starting point is 00:23:24 And we always talk about the effect of touring and, you know, all of the highs to the lows and everything in between with it. I'm curious, like, since you've been doing this for so long, do you remember what it was like for you in the beginning and kind of how it is for you if you feel like it's gotten any easier in a sense? Yeah, it's if it's more difficult in different ways but it has gotten easier because we've learned a lot of how we could make our life better. And you know, I will say this with
Starting point is 00:24:02 I'm going to get like a public service announcement. We are very lucky, right? Like we owe a lot to our fans, the success of the band, the continued success to being able to tour the way we tour and at the venues we do and with 100-something 20 people on the road at any given time.
Starting point is 00:24:20 You know, it's like a rolling city. Yeah. You know, that we, and they work, we work hard, but they work so hard to make sure that the show gets put on every night, our crew and our band. And, you know, they're there at 6 a.m. setting up, like, we talked about our good friend, Cam. And so when we walk in the door, that it feels like a little bit like home, because it's hard being away.
Starting point is 00:24:40 But I digress. The ability, when we were younger, we did not understand how to, you know, celebrate the wins. Like, it was always the next thing. Yeah. Right? Like, and that's part of the young, young hustle, right? Like, we would fill our days with, like, we do the morning radio.
Starting point is 00:25:00 I would have been, say we were in Pittsburgh today, where I am today. We'd have showed up at 5.30 a.m., done the morning, you know, five different stops at morning radio, done two different random meet and greets in the middle of the day, finally got into the venue, done a sound check party, a long meeting greet for more than probably 150 to 200 people. and then do the show, maybe do something after, and then drive on the bus, next city, do it all over again. That was life right after Camp Rock. Now the grind is much different.
Starting point is 00:25:31 The time is better used, but it's just a lot more demanding on our sleep schedule and our time. And I find myself alone a lot because we have two beautiful young girls and they're 11 and 9. And there at that point where like missing schools a little bit of a challenge and my wife Danielle, who is the best in the world and strongest, like she is making home feel safe for them when dad's not there as much as I want to be, you know, I want to be there always, but I mean as much as I can be. But she's my teammate in this. And, you know, we, we know what this is, but she puts up with a lot, which is great. I'm curious about like burnout because I've always wondered this.
Starting point is 00:26:15 with... There's burnout. But how, like, ultimately, like, what do you do when you feel it creeping in? Because ultimately, you don't really have a choice. Like, you're on the road. You've got to be at the show. Yeah. And we say this all the time.
Starting point is 00:26:32 It's like, not everyone can breathe at 30,000 feet, right? Yeah. Well, thank God, kind of they can't because then everybody would be doing it, you know? And, like, thank God. Like, we are very, very blessed and very lucky. and I'm just, I think the burnout is real, right? You have to prioritize your time at home. I push it.
Starting point is 00:26:53 I have been on non-days-off. So only days off, like I've missed two days at home on non-days off on this entire run on this tour. Meaning, if I have a day off, I'm not staying on the road. I'm not just like, well, I literally wake up in the morning or that night and I fly at home and I spend the day at home. Yeah. And then I get on a plane and come right back to the day. the tour. So like I've only missed two since beginning August. Wow. And that's just because we were like in Vancouver and it just like by the time I flew,
Starting point is 00:27:24 it didn't even, I couldn't even, I'd be on the ground for an hour. You know, it just like didn't make sense. Um, but it's hard. I try to come home as much as I can. We have windows of time. Like, everybody spends time away from their family. Yeah. We all do. And it's just, they used to call me KT&T. And because literally just me and Danielle, like our relationship with. was just on the phone. Like, I just stayed on the phone. Like, we just would talk all the time. Now, thank God, you know, FaceTime is real.
Starting point is 00:27:52 And I can just be in the kitchen with them as they're making dinner and hanging out. And I'm just in my dressing room, you know. Yeah. Yeah. But I think burnout, it's about who you surround yourself with. We have a really great little team that we travel with that makes us feel good.
Starting point is 00:28:05 And we try to fill the time, work out, eat well. Eating is hard. Yeah. I'm being honest. Like, eating right is hard. Yeah. Like, we have a really good team that helps us make sure we can do that. But, like, after show food, you know, it's just, like, it's a whole thing.
Starting point is 00:28:26 How, I'm sure there's, it's probably gotten a little easier now that your daughters are older. They can kind of, they can understand a little bit more, like, why you're not home. How, how, because this is something, you know, we don't have kids yet. we want kids soon and that's something that we talk about is like what is that going to look like if you know taylor's going back to work and what if i'm doing so like how how does that what's the balance yeah how is that going to work the balance the balance is really luckily i have Danielle and but that same thing is she we're not in the page of like we made an understanding to each with each other like cool we're not going to just homeschool the kids and just have them be on the
Starting point is 00:29:09 road with me and that's their life and it's all about me it's like no it's like my 11 year old's got her friend and she wants to be in school she is so incredible she gets on the phone in the zoom with her with her tutor every time she has a thing without us asking studies on her own like she's so like I'm going to do great I'm like my god who are you but but but at the same time I get it and so I want to respect that because I think I it can't just be about oh this these are my needs it's not really like our collective it's like what is daniel need what is lean any what is Valentina needed. They are older. I never thought they were going to see the band. When the band broke up for that time that we were separated as a group, I really didn't know if we would ever make music
Starting point is 00:29:52 again, tour again, like ever. So Thursday. And I, the band breaks up in like October, November. She was born in February. So like, it was in the cost of me. Like, Daniel's like seven months pregnant. She's like, oh my God, our life's like up in the air now. Like, what does this even mean? Wow. You know, like, everything's in flux. And then we're about to have a kid, like, just all of it's wild. Yeah. I can't imagine.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Yeah, it's just insane. So it was a trying time for me to understand. That's when I realized I had, like, I didn't know I could have depression and I did, you know? But I just didn't know my identity outside of this band because I was, that's who I was. That's my crutch. That's like, well, I'm Kevin Jonas from the Jonaspo. It's like, yeah, well, that's who I am. That's my job.
Starting point is 00:30:39 That's how people associate me. So it's like, once that's gone, oh, God, I've been doing this since I was 15 years old. Who am I? Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, I'm like, oh, no. Like, what is this? Look like now.
Starting point is 00:30:51 And it's like, I have interest. I want to do this. I want to do that. But not everything works. Like you said, Taylor, like, it definitely sometimes can, like, not come to you as fast as as you thought it would. And it's not easy that you think it's going to be. But when we came back together in 2019 and the girls got to see us on stage for that
Starting point is 00:31:08 first time in Miami on that tour in the Happiness Begins Tour, it was like, I just couldn't, I couldn't deal. It was the greatest thing ever. Oh my gosh. Now she's bringing all her friends from school to the big, our show in New Jersey this weekend when she's got a box. And she's like, Dad, can I just get merch and can get like the ice cream card that you guys can get in for us? And like, can we just like, can we just get you guys to sign all the vinyl so that when they show up, it's like all done?
Starting point is 00:31:34 I love. She's curating the experience. She knows what she wants. And I'm like, you know what? Sure. Like, how am I supposed to say no, number one? I'm like, this is awesome, by the way. If my dad was a rock star, I'd be like, yeah, I want that too.

Because this is another thing that we talk about. You mentioned one of your daughters learning to play guitar and doing that. Have they come to you? Do they want to perform? Do they want to act? How do you feel about them? How do you feel about that. They, we just finished
Starting point is 00:35:14 this Christmas film. They are in the movie. The whole family's in the movie at certain points. Yeah. We are playing heightened versions of ourselves, so, you know, people are like, is this a Jonas? Like, Disney Channel Jonas universe? Or is this like actual? I'm like,
Starting point is 00:35:30 no, this is like, weird. It's its own thing. They, my youngest, like, an oldest, I think they are not sure 100%, but my youngest is like, I want to be in movies. I want to be on TV, Dad.
Starting point is 00:35:45 I want to act. I was like, okay. And I just like, we'll just take it slow. We'll just take it slow. But then you watch her on screen in this movie and you're like, oh my God, you're really funny. Like, I'm like, oh. And even the team from Disney at the premiere was like, you know, if your girls ever just want to come in? I was like, oh, no, here we go.
Starting point is 00:36:04 Let's begin, you know? Like, I don't. And me and Daniel have talked about it, right? We're like, we will never push. I will support. I will balance that with, I will let them understand. There's more rejection in this than there isn't anything in your life. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:20 Yeah. And if you can't handle that, and if we can't work through the highs and lows together, then we shouldn't be doing this. Yeah. Man. That's a good advice. For sure. But I also go, okay, if our parents,
Starting point is 00:36:36 my parents didn't know, they didn't know that going into it. they just knew we wanted this. And if they would have stopped us because of the potential, my whole life is different. Yeah. So at the same time, I balance that with, okay, well, I have a better sense of the understanding of what it takes and what to look out for. But I also don't feel like it's my place to decide whether or not this is going to be who they are. Yeah. So it's like, I will support you.
Starting point is 00:37:07 If this is something you really want to do, let's go into acting lessons for a year. Let's see how that feels. Do you want to keep going? Do you hate it? You know? So it's like, like, so let's do a little work and see how you feel. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:19 When people ask me if I would want my future child to get into acting, that's kind of what my answer has been. I say deep down, I would prefer not. But, but what? You're not going to like, if that's their dream, you're not going to be like, no. Totally. But they also don't realize. No one does.
Starting point is 00:37:43 What it's like to be on set if you've never done it. There's no school for that. It's like, hey, by the way, this is your chair. This is your room. You're not going to go on set. You're not going to talk during this time. You have to go to school. Oh, by the way, there's going to get 150 people waiting for you.
Starting point is 00:37:56 If you're late, you're making everyone late. It's like, there's a lot to put on a kid. For sure. And so it's like no one teaches, yes. Oh, this is how you act. It's like, actually, what they should be teaching. When you get a job, this is how you should be acting on set. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:09 that's really what they should be teaching yeah yeah that's true um sorry I have this whole thing about it no one no one taught us right it's like cool be professional kids it's like great what do I do yeah what does that look like yeah
Starting point is 00:38:25 and I'm sure it was the same for you you were on screen super early yeah yeah for sure you mentioned therapy a little bit we we talk about therapy a lot on this podcast It's changed both of our lives drastically.
Starting point is 00:38:44 But I'd love to kind of hear your experience with it and what you've learned. I know it's a very broad question. No, it's fair. I actually sought out a therapist after our last tour, to be honest. I came home from Europe and I just was not in a good spot. I think I had spent too much time away. I got stuck in a thing, I think, came off of it all. And it just like, I think the serotonin drop was just maybe too much.
Starting point is 00:39:18 And I was like, I just couldn't like reaclame. Yeah. It was really weird. Like, I couldn't like connect. I was having a really rough go. Like, I just felt like I couldn't find myself either. And I found myself like being disconnected. at home, but that's where I was missing when I was there. So it was like really strange,
Starting point is 00:39:39 you know? Um, so I, I saw a therapist, um, and he's an incredible, incredible guy, uh, me, you know, with disclosure of my wife and my, so we both work with him and he works with both of us, which is kind of great. We have the same thing. Because it like helps me to like, process on my own and then we work together. Yeah. He has a clear understanding from both sides. Exactly. I, I don't know. Like, I, this is full. single take. Sometimes I feel like therapy, if it's only one-sided, it's like, well, aren't you only getting half of the story? Aren't you only getting half of the experience? Yeah. And not in every case. And sometimes you just need someone to be able to work through something
Starting point is 00:40:18 with. But I don't know, that's for a professional. Works for you guys and it works for us. It works for us. And it was wonderful because I was like, hey, I just, how do I do this? Like, what steps am I doing wrong? And he gave me some really good advice. He's like, look, you're having a hard time because you feel like you're waiting for the next thing to come, right? You're like, what's next? What's next? What's next? He's like, how about you just like take a whole week off of all your phones, electronics and just be hyper-present? Be like overly present. Like make it a job because it's not, right now, you're not doing it naturally, so make it a job. And by the end of that week, I didn't think about anything else than just being part of everything. And it was like the
Starting point is 00:40:59 greatest, like, yes, I think I had to do almost to do like a full like reset, like a hard reset. And it really helped. And I missed, then I was like, oh, thank God. I miss this. You know, but it takes, you mentioned it earlier, the highs and lows of the touring. That one for some, it never really had it. There's always, you know, everyone gets sick after a tour.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Like, we're all like in it, you know, we're good, we're good. And then the minute the tour ends, it's like, I, uh, I have like the worst flu I've ever have. You know, like your immune system's finally just like, you can finally rest. Because your body just knows you're in fight, you're in fight or flight right now. Like we're just going. Totally. So that's my experience with therapy.
Starting point is 00:41:41 I love that. Yeah. Us having the same therapist has been so great because it really helped us. Yeah. Like we don't, he knows how both of us are, but also like we don't, we're not both like having to explain this. Like he just knows so much about us. We're not each having to go explain something to a different person. I find, and I'm not going to speak for Danielle.
Starting point is 00:42:03 her experience is, you know, hers. But for myself, I find my ability to speak freely more freely. Because I feel like he can connect dots that I don't have to connect for him. Yes. Yeah, that's so true. It actually, like, takes some of the, like, well, maybe it's not, like, I'm, like, almost self-analizing. It takes that out of it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Yeah. Totally. I could say you're working through some change. Changes. Changing. Changes. You're doing some changing. That was my segue.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Beautiful segue. I like it. You know what? The grammar may not being correct, but. We get the point. Can I just say that when I probably had a full week of just you singing that song on my TikTok because it just watches what you enjoy. enjoy and watch. And every time I came past those videos from the first night, dude, I just,
Starting point is 00:43:09 it became my whole feed. Like, it was truly unbelievable. And I'm just so happy for you. Thanks. Was that like, do you get nervous at this stage of your career? Well, not like in the sense of the Jonas Fathers stuff. But in that moment? That's my, that's, That's me, like, you know, taking the dog for a walk, you know? Yeah. But this moment, my God, I was an anxious. Oh, I spoke to my therapist four times that day. Wow.
Starting point is 00:43:40 Oh, my God, dude. Like, I was, like, pacing. Daniel was like, Kevin, what is wrong? I'm like, I was up that morning. We all flew to Boston. And she had all her girlfriends come, which was really fun. It was her sister's birthday. And so, like, she brought all her sister's friends.
Starting point is 00:43:56 And, like, it was great. And I'm, like, up at, like 7 a.m. Hasting in the room. And she's like, Kevin, what is going on? I'm like, I'm fine, I'm fine. So just went to the gym. I just, like, had to move my body, you know?
Starting point is 00:44:10 But I was really anxious because it's like, look, I wanted to perform it. Like, I really wanted to perform it. And I wanted to do it, like, opening night of the tour. And I'm actually so grateful I didn't. I was like, let me just get this. It was a little bit like, I just need to get it done. Yeah. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 00:44:30 Totally. And so I was just kind of like, I just, I need it over with. And it's like having a bad conversation. You just, sometimes you just go rip the end of it. And so I wanted to do opening night, but it was like, I had a good conversation with the guys. And it's like, okay, you know what? Tonight specifically is about the last 20 years. You know, we're going to focus on that.
Starting point is 00:44:51 And then as the tour progresses, we'll talk about new, which is the right thing to do. And so we picked Fenway, which is also another stadium. Cool. good on me. Let's just make this most like in crazy moment ever. Yeah. So I get up there and they, Joe announces it
Starting point is 00:45:09 which I think we're like kind of like people were a little like confused you know, like at first what's going on? Yeah. I've never done anything. There's people that are listening that don't know. It's like I don't sing lead in the songs. It's really Joe and Nick. I've always sang backgrounds, other things. There's been times where I've had moments for sure
Starting point is 00:45:25 but like it's not been my biggest strong suit and thing for myself. You know, I do what I do. I do it well. It's just, I also, it's kind of like, hey, have you heard these two guys sing? Holy hell. You know what I mean? Like, yeah, he's Shane Gray for crying out loud.
Starting point is 00:45:42 Yeah. So, you know, it's one of those things. And so it's not, they always encouraged me. It was never that. It was myself, always kind of holding myself back, myself back, not knowing if I was ever feeling like it was right. Or if I could do it. Just being honest. I didn't feel like I was good enough really.
Starting point is 00:46:03 And partially because, one, I didn't feel like I had the vocal ability, and I think years of touring now and things and maturity in my voice, like maybe have helped. And also, I think we're just more time, confidence, whatever. But then also Jason Avigan. Do you guys know Jason? I don't think so. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Jason's incredible. An amazing songwriter, producer, credits that go forever. I wrote him in, February and I say, hey man, do you have any songs that you might feel like could be something special for me? And he doesn't, he doesn't respond, which is fine. Don't think twice about it. He writes me in June with the song. He says, I think I found it. That's hilarious. And that's how he responds. And I was like, okay, I guess time needs everything, right? Wow. And he, I started playing the song, sent it to Phil, my manager was like,
Starting point is 00:46:59 Phil, this is, this is the one, this is it. It felt evergreen, but it felt like it always was here, but it also felt like mine, even though it wasn't mine yet. You know what I mean? It was one of those weird things. But you knew immediately. I knew immediately. I flew to L.A. I cut it and it was the first time I've ever cut vocals. And I've cut
Starting point is 00:47:17 vocals on a lot of other songs trying, just to see if it was right. And nothing ever connected the way I really wanted it to. I just got the cut and I was like, okay, when can I put this out? And that was in June. Yeah. So it's a long time coming, but I'm grateful you watched the videos.
Starting point is 00:47:37 It was really special. The response has been beautiful. And honestly, people ask, so why now? Why are you doing it? I'm like, honestly, because I found the song. Okay. I mean, to be honest, I was going to ask you that question. I was going to say, is there anything, you know, in your life,
Starting point is 00:47:54 recently that made you decide now feels like the time. But I will quote Shay Mooney from Dan and Shea. I played in the song early this year. And I was like, hey, I just cut this. What do you think? And he goes, this song, he's like, I've always known this song. It was one of those weird things. He's like, it's just always been there.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Yeah. You know? And I'm like, that's exactly how I felt when I heard it. It was like, oh, this song has always existed, you know? It's one of those weird things. Yeah. And he's like, it's exactly who you are without saying anything more than that. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:48:36 He was kind of confused. He's like, so weird knowing you. And we're like long-time friends. So, like, we spent many golf trips together. Yeah. But like, he's like, this is really cool. Like, he's like, this is rare. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:47 Wow. Can I just go back to the Fenway moment one more time because clearly I'm obsessed with it? When you finish performing the song, do you know immediately? Yeah, I crushed that. And, like, people are eating it up. Zero, zero. No, like, I am blackout. I just, watch the video.
Starting point is 00:49:11 Well, watch a video. I get apparently. Oh, I've seen it, Kev. Half the time, my eyes are closed. I'm just hyper-focused on just singing and getting through it. get through it. Yeah. I couldn't even play the guitar in the very beginning of the song, which is what I do.
Starting point is 00:49:30 That's your thing. All else fails. If all else fails, I can do that. Pluck away. I couldn't even strum the verse. I was just like, okay, I'm going to pick it up in the chorus. There we go. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:49:41 Oh, my gosh. Do you think? It was like, and then I saw the video of Danielle seeing it happen. And that's when I was like in tears after. Oh, my gosh. That's so sweet. now having your first solo song is this
Starting point is 00:49:57 are you wanting to do more solo stuff yeah I've cut more music with the same team oh yeah I've cut more music I'm working on more stuff things are progressing I'm not sure what it will be or what it will what I'll do with it
Starting point is 00:50:16 I'm gonna get my TikTok ready as of now I am I am creating more I love that. Well, we're very excited for you and for this. I'm very excited for you guys on your journey, and I hope you come to New York for the holidays. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:34 Yeah, we're definitely going to take a peek at those dates because... We'll figure something out. I... And you should see the show. It's really cool. I would love a Joe Bro show. It's really a special... This one's a real celebration of the last 20. We found a way, like, Joe is so good and Nicker is so talented.
Starting point is 00:50:56 But like, we do this part of the show where Joe just read signs and we play whatever they want to hear. Because because of this five albums, One Night Tour and just our incredible band, and because we've truly been doing this for this long, we can pretty much play anything that we have, like the whole 180 song repertoire. Wow. So, like, we can kind of do it all. and he'll read signs in the room and people are like, oh, it's stage.
Starting point is 00:51:23 I'm like, no, it's fully like, whatever he reads and games and like pick a song thing. Like, we just play it. And it's been, we've gotten stumped once so far on this run. And it has become my like, favorite. It's become, I don't know how. Last night, it went for 30 minutes. I was like, we looked at, Joe looked at the time.
