Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Starting point is 00:02:09 agent provocateur with brad is up and uh people are loving it he's a fun guy man it's a very good show it was a fun did you listen to it on the way i did i had no idea that bradshaw living ran an entire hockey league i didn't know that episode i uh also didn't know that it was three on three oh it was not it wasn't three on three and run brad ran a real league yeah i didn't realize how much of a connection he had to shane doan from his time with the coyotes yeah oh yeah um it makes a lot of sense now that he brought him over to toronto because that was his captain and when he was working in the front office there as an agm he trusted him a lot it was cool to learn that it was a great show i feel like it's just a matter of time before josh stone is a leaf
Starting point is 00:02:54 just i just get that that's not he was the only good saber last night and i think i think he'll be a leaf but he's sabers don't like good sabers what's your favorite takeaway from the show what's fair favorite takeaway from the show uh i loved when they were talking about uh alan and and and brad are talking about their first dealings together and it was as a bit at mahalik who i used to take all the time in like nhl games as a part of my uh fantasy draft yeah uh and they called him big z and then he said he was a low maintenance player and stuff like it was it was and what a story by alan to tell about his journey to the nhl and how he failed at every single level yeah from his check team he was cut from his q team had to beg uh chakutami uh to take him
Starting point is 00:03:42 got invited to wild camp rookie camp and they're like we'll take you at big camp and then he played a preseason game or two and they signed him yeah that's a cool freaking story crazy nobody wanted him on any of his teams and then eventually the last one the nhl team's like okay we'll give you a shot and then long successful nhl career good on him not giving up alan always says it to us but it's funny jess like when whenever alan says like yeah you know you just and he'll say this off there he's like you just don't understand the belief that these guys have in themselves and and it's it sounds like a um like a sportsism where you're kind of like okay whatever man like but when you hear a story like that you're like oh yeah like that's where that comes from that
Starting point is 00:04:26 and he was right yeah he was right to keep going and not quit on his dream yeah very very cool and then the uh the part about alan and and brad hearing them joke with each other you can tell they they have a good relationship off camera too you know talking about the first time they met back there with that story and and how it's not all just screaming at each other you think like anytime alan's talking to any gm he's just trying to tear them a new one yeah but that's not how that's not how it is at all no listen the only i think the only negotiation going that way right now is the canadians and lane hudson but right other than that what are you about to say steve that's your leaf fan showing no i was given the impression that he was on his best behavior on
Starting point is 00:05:05 his own podcast but when in fact he probably calls brad mean names i'm sure they've had some maybe once in a while yeah yeah it's been like my hollick by the way 784 career nhl games after getting cut in czechia and in the queue uh not bad at all i liked for some reason i just found the visual of uh brad trill living sitting in a boat uh in the middle of a lake by himself very funny oh yeah because he talked about who is that very tall man like what he does during the summer he's like i just sit in the boat sometimes by myself and i'm like i get that i get it you get to a certain age and you're just like yeah i would love to sit in a boat by myself right now i'm at that age there's so many children in the family and and the extended family i would
Starting point is 00:05:55 like to be by myself in a boat i don't i love my kids or my kid i only have one but and i love those kids but you know after about an hour you're like i think i think i could be in a boat when i'm in the kayak by myself do you think i'm going anywhere no you think i'm picking something up going shopping it's no i'm just going one place and then coming home eventually yeah yeah oh no i left my phone at home too i just gotta sit out here in the middle of the lake i am understanding why people golf i i do get it yeah you need to take up golf i do i do all right now jesse uh speaking of being alone in the boat can we uh can we pull up this picture okay um uh because steve i need you to answer the the question of the day which is is it good got it okay so when
Starting point is 00:06:39 you see this picture you need to tell us is this good maddie can you fire it up the picture is of alex nadalkovich racing back to the net uh as um uh the the vegas gold knights have a wide open cage because Nadelkovic came out to challenge and missed it the answer is an emphatic yes this is good for the Vegas Golden Knights and Riley Smith in overtime in overtime just unbelievable Alex Nadelkovic if you're a goaltender now if if anybody missed this play Nadelkovic came out to challenge because he didn't want uh he didn't want a breakaway or a two-on-one but what was crazy is that when he he got to the puck first yeah riley smith was bearing down on him but he tried to flip it over to his uh to one of his teammates and shea theodore intercepted it
Starting point is 00:07:33 riley smith went to the net and when you go to the net with your stick down uh good things look he wins this battle he wins this battle does he no he won the initial battle he didn't win the war didn't win the war but that is a miscalculation yeah no i think he lost adam yet and he would have been better off going full butterfly he should have just gone literally two pad stack at the blue you know what you get it on the superman yeah anything yeah that's got to be the easiest goal riley smith's ever scored just dominic hasik marion gabrick it is the most muted celebration for an overtime winner i've ever seen yeah in terms of like a game winner to to end the game in overtime easiest whatever what
Starting point is 00:08:21 player look at everyone standing completely upright before the game is even over because they're like whelp oh well this is done yeah straight knees the game's over oh is that will smith trying to get back there god bless him god bless i mean you're just so rarely helping i think he lost this battle you're just so rarely helping us you know what's nuts too is that san san jose could have won this game oh yeah like listen again i got a whole i heard from a bunch of people who are proud dorfee of fantasy holders oh yeah scored again last night uh-huh but uh i'm looking at i'm looking at the i think he's got four goals yep here nice uh but i'm i'm 35 i'm looking at that score i'm like that's overtime they scored three you're not talking about the
Starting point is 00:09:03 actual almost trying to win the game what do you mean at the end of regulation they have an empty net san jose does oh i missed they're all in front of the net trying to shovel the puck in the net and none of them can do it and jack eichel comes up the other end i'll bring up the video it was ecklund or smith and he shoots it from like a center ice and it goes in that was the one to tie it the other one the ot one to yeah that was the one to tie it yeah he comes up so i missed that part and it's uh oh my god well they tie the game with the six on five this is life with alex nadalkovich this guy's on like five teams in the last four years um there was that flash of brilliance early on in carolina uh and then how many call their nominee yeah how many exactly
Starting point is 00:09:46 how many times does a team need to try it before it's just not there sometimes you stick your neck out for a player and you really go to bat for them and years later you're proven wrong i was i was like man i thought that was the dumbest trade yep i thought that was so stupid getting rid of nadalkovich and uh whelp so good choice it's william ecklund he comes he has the empty net oh no uh less than 30 seconds left here i think this isn't a goal this isn't a goal the net's wide open he tries to wrap around and he kind of slips here on his edges can't feed it home he gets actually a second crack at it while on his stomach he gets snowed in the face so bad and vegas is able to keep it out by some miracle and in the same sequence jack eichel gets the puck
Starting point is 00:10:38 at half court shoots it and it goes in no this is so ugly where are you it was it was like directly in guys where are your posts where are you going you're lost yeah this is dollar tree headset i think we got to call it what it is until further notice nedeljkovic is vasotoskala and i won't be i i need to see evidence to the contrary vasotoskala was good in san jose yeah it's true this is yo ask rob's gonna play some hockey then oh i know here's here's how aggressively your fortunes change look where he shot it from oh my god that's that's worse that's worse than overtime honestly it might have been icing oh my god yeah he doesn't gain center there's no if your stick clears it when you're shooting
Starting point is 00:11:26 they always give you it oh well yeah especially if we're going by the rule like technically you could argue it's icing no ref whatever i scored i scored from there once um in a select hockey tournament for the west hill golden knights i scored from before center justin was my this is a crazy thing to do but you played for the west hill golden hawks golden hawks yeah i wasn't on the team yeah uh but justin justin fisher i believe was my defense partner that tournament and no way and i just fired it and uh and it just went it was one of those it was just a bloop it just went up and then down along the ice and then all of a sudden i heard all the parents go and i was like did that go in it's a it's very satisfying if you ever get one of those in hockey
Starting point is 00:12:08 uh for that to go in i can only imagine jack eichel's gonna remember that what like that's a fun goal to score jack eichel's already forgotten that like it's no he had four points in his first game like jack i know you remember the weird ones yeah you gotta remember the weird ones and that's i don't know you can never get that with a season against san jose i like it here's how quickly your fortunes change though because vegas blows what was it a 5-2 lead against la yep losing the shootout imagine they lose this to san jose all of a sudden you've got one out of your uh uh one point out of a possible four yep to start the season and everyone's looking at you a little sideways because there's high expectations for
Starting point is 00:12:53 the vegas golden knights now they got three out of four points you're fine no one gives a damn haven't lost in regulation yet oh yeah no one cares no no one cares you're doing great there was a minute 38 when uh jack eichel scored and you know what you can say the same about nadelkovich right like i mean why are we crashing out so early on this guy i don't think anybody because there is a body of work that is poor i think the end result here is the best for both themes san jose doesn't want to win well okay here's here's what i want to say though it's a gift yeah this is actually really helpful for them if yes strategically although hasso platner who's their owner, gave an interview that I have not fully, fully read.
Starting point is 00:13:35 But he was quite open about what happened over the last three, four years and how he's like, I don't want to be in the... He said, I don't want to be in the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes this year. Too bad. Well, and if you're going to start Nadelkovich and he's going to play like that, probably you will be. But what I think is an issue is, and I look at what happened in Chicago. I want to know San Jose and Chicago are completely different scenarios.
Starting point is 00:13:59 But you can even relate it to when the Sabres started their rebuild. If you have a bad goalie, it will kill a young team's confidence. So what San Jose is going to need to do is figure that out relatively quickly and get some NHL average goaltending this year. Even if that NHL goalie is really, really good and their numbers suck because San Jose is not a complete team yet, it's going to be important for them to do that. I can't overstate how detrimental that will be to that young core if they have a goalie that plays like that regularly. Here's the bar. You should win the games that you should win.
Starting point is 00:14:39 And most people heading into a game against the Golden Knights wouldn't necessarily be like, yeah, the Sharks have to win that game. Minute 38 left, you're up. You got to win that game. And you had a shot at the empty net. Yeah, and you've got to be able to shovel that one home. You got to win that game. there and it man it takes a village but you can put both goals to end the game squarely on nadalk
Starting point is 00:15:05 yeah yeah this this comes on the heels of how we started which was he shouldn't have been so far out of his net get a bungee cord where are you where are you going who told you to go there i feel bad for everybody else on the ice because like you work so hard for that three two lead yeah it's golden knights they're a good team and then both times your goalie just screws it up for also i was annoyed i was annoyed misa didn't play he should be playing and and and i think platner said that in the interview and he's like you know it's coach's decision but i think you should be playing and i was like well i guess he'll be playing next game uh yeah your boss's boss's boss is saying play the player and come on what are we doing here no you drafted him second
Starting point is 00:15:50 and he made the team to sit? Why? Yeah, no. Send him back to the OHL. Send him back to the OHL. Maybe he'll score 70 this year. Why? What are we doing?
Starting point is 00:16:02 I don't understand that at all. I don't either as a Michael Mesa fantasy holder. I stashed him on my bench just in case he has a good year. Same with Ryan Leonard. Man. If you guys have a Calder bid, I want you guys to be on my team. It's a tricky rookie as a sleeper year.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Isaac Howard is scratched. He's playing. He scored a point. he did this he did that he did yeah it's very the goalie thing you're talking about like that's ask her off right they have a goaltender yes yeah i i just i okay so he was injured a most last year yes um so i wonder if they're like trying to ease him in and be like and like the reason they didn't resign georgiev is is because of performances like what nadalkovic gave you last last season uh georgiev was last season's nadalkovic this season so far and i know it's early but we've
Starting point is 00:16:47 seen this um you just don't know what you're getting out of him because next game he might stop 38 to 40 like yeah he does give you good games oh dude and at the end of the day like escrow is still only 23 maybe you want to go with the vet you know to start game number one he's going to be your starting goaltender yeah and maybe after game number one you've realized he's kind of lost the job and then you go along there who knows but i don't mind the idea of going with nedeljkovic first and then seeing what you got there in terms of your experience to nhler but ask ross the future think of how good nedeljkovic looks if he just stops that eichel shot but he stopped at that point uh his team's getting out shot 28 to 21 28 is fine 21 is not um he stops
Starting point is 00:17:37 that bloop all of a sudden he stopped 29 probably ends up above 30 you win the game oh they found their little blah blah blah exactly it's that was two teams uh narrative aggressively changing in two moments yeah so you ask him okay go out do the same thing you did all game except for the last 90 seconds uh next game and then we'll be perfectly fine that oh boy you know what you can say the same thing about stewart skinner man go out and do the thing you did except for that one 30 second blip yeah god you're not helping that's that's what you're so rarely help tenders right because that's that's the problem with goaltending it's like one mistake is so uh like it's an under a microscope right what's funny is the right play right the boring play is the right
Starting point is 00:18:28 play for the trapezoid like so goalies can't play the puck in the corner anymore but it's like they painted on the ice hey if it's here go ahead and they still oh yeah if it's in front of you fucking stop now we have so rarely helping we have no um we have no nhl games today but we have all 32 teams in action tomorrow and then one game on sunday yeah and there's 14 games yesterday yeah i think that stinks yeah i think it's unbalanced well okay i understand you're wanting the thing is they're not okay with with going head-to-head with nfl teams on sunday but they're okay with putting 14 of them against an nfl game on i guess they're trying to win in the aggregate just why not on saturday game on on thursday last night oh on thursday yeah like that was a good
Starting point is 00:19:20 game that was a good giant scheme i'm not buying that argument anymore i can't like it's okay from this you want to run from the nfl so what are you going to put your games on when nobody wants to watch sports like i don't i don't get it this this is what the nhl is always going to be but just little bitty teeny tiny your hand was blocking your hand oh was it yeah yeah it's fat sorry the back you're sorry my bad jesse couldn't see what i was doing that's so funny you're just showing me this the fat of my hand it looks like why am i looking at your knuckle back of your wrist which i could have been doing anything my name is gary batman i thought you were doing a little italian no no no oh my god uh the na oh no no no and you're not gonna have games
Starting point is 00:20:18 anyway So the commissioner comes to teach Gary Bettman. Yeah. Where's my drywall? Oh, I got a job to finish and then I'll come over. What, you think I'm stiffing you? That's a stereotype, Jesse. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:37 You think this is a no-show job? What? Sorry. We are going on the NHL is un poquito. It is. What is it? Un poquito? Un poquito is good.
Starting point is 00:20:48 yeah it's well they act small they're small teeny tiny niche sport irrelevant little brother and they will always be taken that way for as long as they behave that way um what what i won't accept as an excuse because this makes no sense to me um the nhl has all 32 teams playing on saturday and they want to make that a special thing and like it's going to be games all throughout the day it's going to be prime time in europe which which is a big thing um that doesn't mean you have to have zero games on friday and how many on sunday one one yep the leafs have 16 back-to-backs this year and you're telling me you could have that it's impossible you could have 15 15 and 15 like it friday saturday sunday what are we doing everyone the games on saturday the thing that
Starting point is 00:21:48 annoys me the most about like oh all teams are gonna be playing there's eight teams playing at 7 p.m eastern well that's that's good like i can watch one game i'm gonna be i'm gonna be watching the least game yeah does it matter to me that there's seven other games going on but jesse they staggered this no they didn't no they didn't that's not this game that's not this day they have that day where they stagger all the starts that's a little better so wait are you scrolled all the way up there's one game at 1 30 one game at four and then the rest seven and this is crammed o'clock yeah what are we doing yeah but it's all the big market things there you gotta you know you gotta look at like montreal chicago big tv markets new york pittsburgh big tv markets philly big tv
Starting point is 00:22:30 market you know that's why so wait scroll up what do we got what's at the very top it's king's jets kings jets all right that's fine i believe that's for that european audience they're doing this new thing um hockey saturdays like it's airing prime time in europe that's good i'm into that yeah and you know what why wouldn't you take advantage of hockey all afternoon when saturday is your day yes yes you should do that i really i like what they're doing saturday i hate what maybe a couple of options at 1 30 and a couple of options at four would be nice yeah right instead of just one yes yes but it's it's like okay so you're scared of nfl you're not scared of college football college football goes on saturdays there are other sports like the other yeah other things
Starting point is 00:23:16 in the universe exists like you're competing with netflix and apple tv and disney plus like and there's a whole bunch of entertainment options just air yours in the best possible way for hockey fans you know what i i'm a film producer i i can't release my film this year because there are other films yeah like i know in theaters it's strategic and you do try to actually avoid other like blockbusters or whatever but there is a strategy to you air your film you put your films in theaters when other big films are going uh in the theater as well it's why barbenheimer was such a success yeah because if people are already going and they and they're there and then they see the they see the other poster like i want to see that too i've watched
Starting point is 00:24:00 football because i was previously watching hockey yeah yeah like oh uh i just think it's so little brother why they debut new sitcoms right after the super bowl yes yes you're already watching you get a bump yeah it's i don't know i i it annoys me as somebody who plays hockey fantasy i feel like yeah nfl has done such a great job with fantasy sports like it's it's so much fun to play fantasy football that's how i found out nhl fantasy stars uh just skipped to saturday yeah i'm like what and like if you're just a casual and you watch you play nhl fantasy um on yahoo or whatever these weeks like it sucks yeah oh all my guys are on saturday i've got nothing to do today i don't gotta set a lineup nothing like it's weird your season began three
Starting point is 00:24:47 days ago and you are already have zero games that's a failure you can't do that well and don't tell me that it's like oh well it's a compressed schedule we had issues you should if it's a compressed schedule you don't get a night off yeah you have a compressed schedule so your strategy was to not schedule games on two out of three days okay all right let's see if that works sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's
Starting point is 00:25:28 patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting, go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list. $15 off your first task at TaskRabbit.ca or on the TaskRabbit app using the promo code DANGLE. Starting point is 00:27:01 new york rangers i mean that's uh not great josh norris went down taking a face off it looks like that shoulder acted up again and lindy rough said he didn't finish the game so that's not a good sign and it was i'm not kidding you it was just a face-off it was no contact steve like it was just like oh i did something i tweaked it like nobody hit him or nothing and like we knew he had shoulder issues we knew that was a problem first game hopefully it's not a complicated one well this so this is the thing a sabers fan posted this and i thought this was interesting he's like in a four month span the sabers traded for josh norris who has injury history uh refused to consider a trade a buyout for matthias samuelson who has injury history and re-sign jordan greenway who has
Starting point is 00:27:44 extensive injury history like at a certain point um are you begging for it like every team's got a guy or two that are like prone to it and and not every nhl player has that thing where their body just holds up under fire all the time but well this collecting them all saber report on twitter had a great stat josh norris has been in four regular season games for the sabers he's finish two of them oh my god oh my god jesse i'm gonna follow saber report it's it's like the dude can't catch a break and something's going on there where his body's broken in a number of different ways just to just to give sabers fans a break because like adam makes a good point like you're you're getting all these guys with injury history i feel horrible for the way ryan ellis's
Starting point is 00:28:35 career ended but the flyers took a big swing well they knew yeah they knew and he played four games and as i remember those four games were actually very good in five points yeah but i was like what did you this was always an alarmingly likely thing to happen and then it happened and i don't have sympathy for you i have sympathy for him yes and and the fans and the fans but the management chuck fletcher i think it would have been at the time who's notoriously so good at his job i i don't i just don't josh norris josh norris god i feel horrible for that yeah me too me too yeah and like you gave up a really good player in dylan cousins yeah thanks for that and you didn't need to yeah at no i mean at no point did they have to do that um you really wanted bernard docker that
Starting point is 00:29:31 much well listen it was cousins who committed the horrible sin of developing backwards on the sabers and they're like oh yeah he makes too much money all of a sudden dude look where things are going man he was great for the senators in the playoff he makes seven million bucks it's a great man and and he doesn't need to score 30 anymore no and in that system he probably can't it's the buffalo with ottawa yeah oh yeah he could score 30 goals thanks thanks guys um okay uh the this is another one from sabers fans ryan uh uh total goals ryan o'reilly won katie casey middlestat won dylan cousins won jeff skinner won eric robinson won the buffalo sabers zero yeah one game they got shut out um even in that josh norris trade the sabers sent a second round pick to
Starting point is 00:30:20 ottawa bro like they they paid to get rid of of cousins and are paying norris more yeah and they don't have a healthy hockey player so and i feel bad like you said i feel bad really for the fans i feel bad for him but the sabers are sitting in this this is their responsibility and i have to say this there are some fans are like it's one game relax but i want to play this video that i just sent to jesse okay just just norris is hurt though i know i know but i want to play this i want to play this video because this guy we can relate to this buffalo like as much as you think that we can't we grew up like this we we had a team that was extremely successful the cap hit and they hired a succession of general managers who were like how does the cap work i
Starting point is 00:31:02 better not figure it out and uh and it was a terrible 12 to 15 year period to be a toronto maple leaf terrible and it was embarrassing and this guy he's there's gonna be a lot of swearing but i just want you to listen to this guy talk about he's not he's not it's not like gratuitous but talk about what it's like to be a sabers fan because this guy's in his mid 20s and the last time the sabers were good he'll tell you it's honestly you came for one fucking goal in a hockey game is that a lindy ruff jersey yeah yeah it is too bad i couldn't get it all on recording before that six years old that's all that was when they made the fucking playoff golly six years old
Starting point is 00:31:52 when they made the plan yeah yeah big big shout out to buffalo freddy for that uh video to give you an idea of how miserable things are so there were three jerseys pictured in that one is for the coach yeah who's probably gonna get fired levi devin levi who is not with the team and uh page thompson who doesn't like how the team doesn't stick up for him i saw somebody post that like well like they posted the the deserve to win a meter and they're like the sabers clearly outplayed the rangers last night okay the stats all the analytics guys actually had the sabers being pretty good this year yeah but you have but i've no rope and the reason you're the sabers i got
Starting point is 00:32:38 you know every time we do the season previews people get on us and people like yeah i can't wait for the sabers to show you and i'm like man the the thing about it is that when they play the games a they got to be healthy b they got to play like a team and you didn't you didn't replace like even if everybody's healthy what'd you do to replace jj peterka we're gonna we're gonna get that scoring josh don't well you're hoping well he's a kid this is what we said with the sabers they were actually i think top 10 in goals last year yep but the question i was asking is okay how many of those games were against backups oh that's an interesting question a lot of them how many of those were in games where you were already down yep three four goals and you come
Starting point is 00:33:29 back to lose by a little yep how many of those were games where you had like a two or three nothing lead and you blew that there's a lot of empty calories there and i think they still have a long way to go early in the season yeah but this isn't start dude this isn't me like this is sabers fans are sick of this i cheer for another team in the division if you want to keep doing this you go ahead but sabers fans are sick of this well they deserve better i mean yes it's like it's a good hockey market it's a great hockey market it's just not a great team and ownership structure when the Leafs were ripping it like 99 2002 uh and they were going to conference finals and everything and Sabres were going to the Stanley Cup final yeah uh beating the Leafs
Starting point is 00:34:15 that was awesome for hockey in this market and that one it's you know same thing with Detroit well let's bring up Detroit first off let's have a look at uh these jerseys which actually looked phenomenal on the ice they rip steve do you are you scared are you gonna run out of the studio seeing these brown gloves i still with you just don't think you need it john gibson's pads look fantastic yeah pretty good i'm not gonna lie i sent you a front view of john gibson's pads too jesse um goalies get a bit of a pass um yeah steve there's nothing wrong with these they're fine they're sick they're fine no you hate them you're a hater say you hate them just say you're the jersey is so good it overpowers it it's an incredible jersey it's awesome you could have
Starting point is 00:35:03 just gone red and made them perfect but it's i mean nine out of ten is pretty good that's that's really good it looks beautiful unfortunately john gibson in those sweet pads did not last uh he allowed three goals uh in the first period alone for the red wings uh and he did get yanked now let me just say that john gibson allowed this is from uh puck report uh john gibson allowed three goals on a 0.42 expected goals in the first period and he was yanked after five goals on 13 shots finishing with a minus 3.46 goal save above expectations that's not great it's one game yeah okay one game but like also acknowledged that it's super early that's all we have to go on right now are we allowed to throw uh uh a red flag for a red flag like this is a red flag
Starting point is 00:35:58 that this might be a red flag you know what i mean i'm not i'm not fully putting a red flag that'd be ridiculous it's too early but this is a red flag that it might be a red flag because i I didn't think he looked good in the preseason either. Leafs played two games against them, and the one game he played. Uh-oh. And you go, eh, that's preseason. And then the regular season shows up, and he's worse. Uh-oh.
Starting point is 00:36:22 This is a guy who your backup goaltending is important. Over the course of 82 games, which is so many games, your starting goalie unless he's one of like the half a dozen guys in the league who play like 55 plus your backup goaltending has to get you points in the standings the team i keep bringing up was seattle i think we would look at them differently if they had league average goaltending behind joey but they don't yeah they did they got like no points out of grubauer games last year yep and it killed them calgary flames a little bit too man well i don't even know what they're going to do this year right i have no idea what like i know uh mr wolf is great i'm not so convinced
Starting point is 00:37:10 with mr cooley now ideally he becomes one of the goalies who gives you 55 plus every year um but i looked at detroit and i go one of the ways they can climb up the standings is now they got talbot and gibson if one of them's bad you're just right where you were and that's gonna be bad news it's ugly yeah now it's an it's an ugly loss for the for the wings but what i thought uh was funny and sends fans were all about this is it really wasn't john gibson um it was travis hamannik that seemed to get under red wings fans skin first game of the season uh there's like an only senator's account and they posted uh just let's check in on the red wings and uh four different guys going holy cow i've seen enough of hamannik already uh what the
Starting point is 00:37:57 hell did hamannik look like in training camp because this is awful get travis hamannik off my effing team fu eiserman jeez ben charotte and travis hamannik have already ruined my night i hate it oh no this is a i i don't this is why i have the wings ranked last i don't get it and i got a bunch of wings fans going yeah but all these young kids they're going to insert into the lineup i'm like guys those are unproven that's nice that you got young people you sound like me you sound like me a number of years ago when i thought everybody was going to hit not everyone is going to hit and i think they have a higher likelihood like man some of those guys uh what was it branson uh new guard um night guard night guard night guard yeah but the but the why with you nordic
Starting point is 00:38:48 countries is a wild card yeah yeah sandy pelica looks amazing is going to be incredibly good but like okay you know you need more than that though better than last year doesn't mean playoffs automatically right you got to keep going and it's just not enough yet it's just and again todd mcclellan they did great under him really good that was last year that was second half that how many backups are you seeing because of where they were in the standings right how many it's you know teams got you know i'm trying to i'm trying to think of the travel schedule if you're facing a team uh who's on the second half of a back-to-back how likely is it that you were the starting goalie team
Starting point is 00:39:41 you know what i mean you got to ask yourself that if a team is coming in here and they're on the first or second half of a back-to-back which goalie are we seeing well this is why i think that that ascends less so the sense more the canadians this year i don't know if jesse agrees with this or not but i think the canadians are gonna i thought they were really good last night um but i think the canadians are a far superior team to detroit anyway they're not going to surprise people you hear these guys talk about this they're not the canadians are not surprising anyone anymore they're still a good we know they're a threat a good flawed up-and-coming team that's a compliment i think that's great mostly compliment yeah absolutely
Starting point is 00:40:25 um jesse do you think because there is that transition right where there's teams that sneak up on you and then the next year there there can be regression because you're not sneaking up on people anymore right i know we're overreacting because it's the first game but hey that's all we have to go on so i'm gonna keep reminding people that's all we have to go on wasn't good uh did you see much of the montreal game last night you see any pieces of it it's it's not a good look for detroit like it's your home opener you want to start this even season off on a good foot you're going for the playoffs you can't it's game one like like don't don't panic because it's game one but the same way how sabers fans feel defeated coming into the season because of that
Starting point is 00:41:10 loss that you feel the same way for detroit fans because you're like everything's perfect when you're oh and oh right when game one hasn't even started there's there's hope and you think you're gonna make the playoffs you're gonna win the stanley cup every team's in it and then you start off that it just leaves a little bitter taste in your mouth and it's not for that first game is it it's the 13 or 14 years that exactly yeah if you're the golden knights and you lose game number one it's fine if you're detroit and buffalo and you lose game number one you're like ah this kind of sucks and so that's the difference you know the rangers get shut out in their first game and everyone goes what and then you shut up the team next game yeah that's and you go oh okay that's
Starting point is 00:41:50 literally why it's game one you gotta start with that next game you win seven two everything's fine yeah you know and that's that's what new york got the first night like it was a little ugly um that that game there would lose in that one because you want like jt miller era to start off on the right foot yeah and then we didn't talk about like when it happened but you don't want to lose that game you come back the next night you win it okay season's underway you look great these are the ups and downs of the season we went through uh full whole seasons of swings here in two games detroit and buffalo have the opportunity to do the same thing go win your next game make it fine gibson or sorry uh talbot goes in next game lays an egg i'm sorry it's now it's one game
Starting point is 00:42:32 for each of them but you are panicking a little this is what or he plays great and you're like okay well that's the start yeah this is i was talking a little about this yesterday with least game because like game one of the season without mitch marner adam you hit on the narrative that's probably going to be a talking point and everything you look bad you still don't want to lose that game like it's so silly that like it's game one but it means it's good that they win it and they just get that monkey off their back and i talked about the empty netter for austin matthews he got a goal yeah i don't give a shit how it happened it was an empty net i like my star player getting that first goal it's out of the way yeah they got a one instead of a zero next and now you look at
Starting point is 00:43:11 sabers in detroit you're like okay go out get your one start your season now you know so i feel bad for those fans but these teams just need to go out and win their game two and this isn't a narrative can i also say that um that it's actually bad if you're telling me the games don't matter that's not good for the league when people are like oh it's one game all right well when do they matter yeah so the preseason doesn't matter every game matter and then the first game it doesn't matter oh it's the you know listen you you're picking and choosing the least lost their first game against montreal last season and we didn't overreact but like it was like the shot to the chest fest right well it was different because they grossly outplayed the habs and then and
Starting point is 00:43:50 lost anyway and we were all like what 50 save shut out yeah i think that literally um but but it's it's it's the um the thing is the games do actually matter and it does it is actually not great to lose and you are gonna lose the drink meme yeah it's a preseason of the team matter preseason first game of the season garbage time in March yeah right that matters like shit yeah oh yeah
Starting point is 00:44:19 by the way the Rangers are playing the Penguins tomorrow night so getting shut out by the Penguins is probably not something they had on their bingo card I'll be curious Justin Brazile is the greatest goal scorer of our generation he is he's he's on fire I am so bitter
Starting point is 00:44:34 about Dubas had a campaign in toronto to recruit justin brazo so for those of you who don't know he was like a late bloomer everyone's looking at him because of how enormous he is he's like six he was like six six 230 and junior but he wasn't very good and then he shows up with the battalion and he throws up a 60 goal season i don't care how old you are i think he was 20 when he did this in junior i don't care how old you are a 60 goal season is going to get you a pro contract somewhere and dubas recruits him signs him to a contract with the marlies even plays a little bit with the newfoundland growlers in the echl like we're going to take
Starting point is 00:45:23 the long road with this guy and they developed him into a professional hockey player the world stops they decide we're not going to develop him anymore do you know how many goals he had with the growlers no how many in the 1920 season in 57 games so that would have ended because of right um he had 27 goals 28 assists 55 points in 57 games that's like that's so clearly a guy yeah he's he's playing too low of a low or too low of a level yeah the something that you thought was there is very clearly there yeah this is the dude and then you let him walk to the fucking bruins and then once he was done there dubas picks him up at his new gig you suck so much dude oh my god i i'm so so resentful that justin brezzo is a pittsburgh
Starting point is 00:46:21 penguin he's always in three goals in two games including the game winner in if this is his breakout year what a what a sign he caught his chops here one goal in 19 games with the wild when he went over there in the half season last year. One goal, and he's already beat that total that he had with the one goal. Well, he's going to get ice time in Pittsburgh. Yeah. By the way, since we're talking about the Penguins,
Starting point is 00:46:43 can we talk about that jersey? I'm going to give you the, I'm going to send you the thing. It's okay, I got it. You got, I love, love this jersey. The Penguins revealed their third jersey. And by the way, this will be the 20th season that Malkin, Letang, and Crosby have played together.
Starting point is 00:46:59 That's the longest in NHL history. That's amazing. and they look super sexy in these jerseys i gotta be honest like these are in terms of uh third jerseys in the nhl to me they're this is at the top it's a lot of yellow but like i fucking love i kind of dig it i love you and the fact that it's a third it's okay like come on that goes so hard for some reason i want that jersey i don't know if this makes any sense at all i feel like if this was their primary i'd be like that's too much but as their third that's a wonderful jersey it's a great jersey yeah like that's i like the penguin too the way they did it yep yep the og from the
Starting point is 00:47:36 70s you know it's interesting um uh they're playing they're using this 11 times this year for a third jersey that's a lot there's a lot of like the rangers were only using theirs was it five or six times or something with their you know the the powder blues that they started the season with the yeah yeah i thought that was only i thought it was a short amount of time i don't love them either no i want i like them better on the ice than i liked them in the promo shoot that's how it always works but this man what is this pop it's so sick sydney crosby can't look bad you could put him in that weird st louis blues jersey that mike keenan didn't like and he'd look fine if you put him in the the buffa slug jersey or the oil splash jersey you can make
Starting point is 00:48:13 sydney crosby look bad no he'd look great he'd look unbelievable the penguins uh tweeted out with that photo that they're the longest tenured trio in north american sports history incredible that's that's a real accomplishment that's really cool yeah and you don't know who they should stay together for 21 and continue to miss the playoffs together who did adam pens fans are just they hate me right now they and they hate me because i should uh i am right there but i think the pens are taking the right moves finally they're finally doing the right thing every year we're way off with a good team that ends up being bad and a bad team that ends up
Starting point is 00:48:58 being good. And I'm just saying, the Penguins being the bad team that ends up being good is maybe the best outcome for hockey. That would be, it would be good. And it'd be also selfishly a really fun bit for
Starting point is 00:49:14 the show. Hilarious. It'd be a really fun bit for the show. It'd be great. Are they going to do it on the heels of Justin Brazeau scoring a bunch of goals? Okay, now it's not is fun no that actually makes it so much happier with that dude freaking do this bro two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life

Starting point is 00:50:29 Lower body injury, but we're told... Speaking of guys who are out all the time. It does not appear to be serious, and it is not related to the knee that derailed him last night. Okay, good. But a bit of a heart attack for Bruins fans. Kind of need him. you're the bruins i i think there's a caveat there like we can all see them doing well this
Starting point is 00:50:49 season the caveat is if they suffer like one significant injury like to a significant player they're done like if if pasta mcavoy or lindholm go down like some teams can survive that and then there's this group and they just they can't you lose any one of those three guys or swayman i mean you're both i still think i i really i'm still not adjusted to the new reality where they're not a dominant team but i i still think they're making the playoffs won their first game yeah i i think and they're the effort level is there they seem to be far more like they seem to be dejected last year after monty was fired you know what i mean they just seem to be discombobulated all the way through you can't tell me the players aren't i almost said looking at the newspaper
Starting point is 00:51:37 they're they're not looking at nhl.com and seeing how well the blues are doing with monty and going and they made the playoffs with monty yeah you know yeah i don't think hockey players pay attention to other things in hockey you're i think you're not completely wrong i i've i've heard enough players say i don't even watch the playoffs i i am starting to think a lot of those guys are dirty dirty liars oh yeah yeah i i've told the story before but there was a player again this is junior so like you know he's still all young and excited maybe the pros approach it differently i was like do you know where you're ranked he goes no i don't know i think like 40 second what do you mean you think like 40 second i go and look and he's 40 second
Starting point is 00:52:22 like you know you know exactly where you are this is our whole world they they know i gotta know head in your own boat i don't think they don't look at it that way i don't think they look at it that way no um jesse's got brazos page up and i'm angry you suck oh my god i'm so bitter about that like oh this guy can't skate let's teach him to skate and then let him dominate not here steve he hasn't done anything outside of these two first i don't care it's not like he had a 60 goal season last year this is it's two games two hot games not yet 50 goal scorer justin briseau the new zach hyman here he comes uh the blue jays six leaves 232 uh oh that's crazy the the blue jays leafs and raptors in their preseason although i don't know if i count that all won the other
Starting point is 00:53:16 night okay and tfc lost and tfc lost i don't like that where people go oh the toronto sports is what yeah but you're cutting off one yeah yeah but also the first it was the first time that the blue jays and uh the blue jays and leafs had won on the same day since 1993 when joe carter hit that home run uh to bring the world series back to toronto uh thank you joe every time joe talks about it that's how he says it yes he does bring the world series back to toronto uh this happened last night um this is greg harvey between the numbs on twitter and he said uh cities in history to have their nhl nfl and mlb team lose and be eliminated on the same day so it's very nhl team lose nfl team lose and mlb team lose in the playoffs and be eliminated on
Starting point is 00:54:14 the same day philadelphia 10 16 1983 and philadelphia 10 9 2025 so what happened last day so the city city of brotherly loss we can call it oh you gotta have some sort of qualifier on your joe carter stat because like the leafs and raptors have our leafs and uh jays have won on the same day like as recently as this year oh yeah i think they meant playoffs playoffs yeah it has to be yeah yeah playoff does it have to be playoff playoff sorry i should put the qualifier yeah yeah because they yeah that would be the case because they haven't won a playoff game since uh 2016 so maybe they so yeah 2016 leafs did not win so yeah although that was the beginning of the matthews era so they won some yeah that's true they started awful though that's funny yeah
Starting point is 00:55:02 they did they did um uh yeah so uh lots happening in the nhl last night uh just you know drinking from a fire hose and that's so so interesting it's like man i'm so glad we don't have a show on saturday because no games last night that would have sucked um but you know i just wanted to kind of run through some of the highlights and that sort of thing and obviously i am so excited for what this all looks like a month from now in terms of how the first month goes because even then people will claim well that doesn't matter and in the case of the Oilers they're right the last two seasons there's not a lot of teams that get to say that only the Oilers really and the Blues and the Blues the Blues historically I'm gonna go on a 19 and 2 run to end the season and
Starting point is 00:55:48 squeak into the eighth seed they love doing that you're they do it is that you know you got a brand you got that's Blues hockey there's I mean there's a lot of confirmation bias that goes on at this time of year so detroit loses and i'm like yeah well that's what i expected yeah and you know buffalo the the one i was just like yeah nah the one i just completely ignored was washington boston boston might be fine but washington i think is still a really good team oh yeah uh jonathan tase who was questionable for last night's game did play for the winnipeg jets he got outplayed pretty significantly in his minutes but the jets won i'm not totally shocked by that though well I'm curious about what it looks like six to eight weeks from now.
Starting point is 00:56:30 Yes. And so are the Jets. Yeah. You can't sign a player like Jonathan Taves who hasn't played for a couple of years and expect him to be dominant right away. One guy has ever done that and it's Mario Lemieux and he doesn't make sense. And you ain't Mario Lemieux. One guy ever is Mario Lemieux.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Two, only one player has ever been the best player in the world, left, returned the best player in the world was the best player in the world left again for three years returned and was the best player in the world and that's mario lemieux yeah jonathan taves is incredible he's going to the hall of fame he's not mario lemieux right so we got to give some ramp up time here yeah but still cool to see uh was neat to see like even the ea sports nhl game had tase that doing the walkout on the ice and then we saw the real thing weird uh kyle it's odd kyle connor was able to score some goals okay fc kind of got a big pop from the crowd you can imagine why uh-huh uh it's uh i think the vibes are good in winnipeg right
Starting point is 00:57:33 now what does it feel like to sign a 96 million dollar deal and score a hatchery i can i have that dopamine can i have they lost that game though right oh they did yeah oh well then four to dallas and he hates oh he had a terrible day i read the score wrong i literally was like oh the jets won now i was like nope that's not what happened it was actually the dallas starts the green team that won oh they almost won hey they did almost win that is correct uh but yeah they did not i'm i i'm really hoping the jets get off to a good start because of how many injuries they got like lowry's out perfetti's out dylan sandberg's out those are three important pieces of your lineup you want to be able to get through this stretch without them and just like okay we're
Starting point is 00:58:17 still in the place in the division where we think we're going to be and we don't completely fall off a map because of these injuries and hopefully they can get enough out of the guys they have and losing ehlers is survivable but not if that's what you're walking so like the tave situation is a lot more serious than you'd think it would be out of the gate where he has to play an important role on this team because of those injuries yeah so that's an interesting team to watch and yeah you hope that you can get that win in a kyle connor hat trick game but fortunately dallas is just really good he's not going to score a hat trick every damn game yeah right so you got to win those i would love to know what percent of the time um the team with a player who scored a hat
Starting point is 00:58:55 trick wins oh that's a good one it's got to be like 80 yeah it's like it's got to be what is what is the percentage yeah it has to be high win percentage of a team that has a hat trick huh you would i mean i don't know three goals out of one guy you would hope so Interesting. Leafs lost the Matthews four-goal game, I know. Sens beat the Lightning last night. Lightning had a 3-1 lead after the first period, and the Senators just said,
Starting point is 00:59:19 how about we tie it up in the second and then just win it in the third with two more goals? And I do think there's a bit of a changing of the guard in the Atlantic, and I know that my Tampa being so low pick was not, and I know it's one game. I'm nervous about that pick. I think the Ottawa Senators are a lot better
Starting point is 00:59:37 than people are giving them credit for. I don't think they're division winning good yet. I think the Tampa Bay Lightning are not at the level that they were even last year. And I think they feasted on regular season stuff last year. People were like, people were blown away. I was blown away by when they made the postseason going up against Florida. I'm like, they're elite. This team is great.
Starting point is 00:59:58 I had them winning. I had them beating Florida too. Stupid, dumb, idiot, moron. uh i i'm just i'm struggling to see how with the injuries they have and the thinning of the lineup that they have because it's not what it used to be well mcdonough is not the guy he was five or six years ago headman is is hurt vasilevsky's been fighting stuff like we're talking about this stuff is catching up it happens they're doing things that teams who get broken by tough teams do which is as you get bled of talent you just supplanted with toughness so i know you're
Starting point is 01:00:35 wondering how does how is steve gonna work the leafs in there i got it curtis douglas uh was a marley um dubas traded him for connor timmons now he's with the lightning this guy is one of the biggest people in professional hockey and they got him after that brawl with the panthers and i thought that was very interesting no abram and douglas in the same yeah yeah like so i'm not i'm not i mean they'll have a very well protected farm team uh i'm not trying to criticize those players but you can't at some point like the way you've kept this going for as long as you have like the lightning run didn't begin in 2020 it began in 2015 at least when they went to the cup final i think they missed the playoffs the next year and then never looked back yeah right there's
Starting point is 01:01:32 president that's where they got duran which they turned into sergachev yes you've been getting all these guys and lately they'll introduce a new guy to the lineup and the name brand of the lightning still mean something and so i go oh well i bet this guy's gonna be and he's a guy if you're not getting your yanni gourds your eric cernak's your yes yeah well and and i look at that sergachev trade and i think about how consequential that probably is like my god why didn't they just pay him they didn't need to get mcdonough back because that's ultimately what happened and then you should have had him instead of mcdonough well that's my point and i think they thought they had something in J.J. Moser, who seems to be a good
Starting point is 01:02:15 player. He'll be good. But I don't know that he's going to be Sergachev good, and I think this is the time where you'd need Sergachev to take over some of those big minutes from Hedman. I think it was a miscalculation. Oh, yeah. Big time. But, we'll see. We'll see. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:31 Long season. The sun could be setting there, but very often when we say that with really elite teams, they prove us wrong. Absolutely. I'm waiting to be proven wrong. Jesse, where do you stand on the Lightning? i know it's just been the one game do you think that they do you think that they are that is there a step back because like like is there you know it is a thinning of the lineup there's no question
Starting point is 01:02:53 the lightning are gonna be fine in the regular season like i don't know how much i believe in them as a deep run playoff team but vasilevsky is such a high floor for this team that i have them in one of the three spots in the atlantic if he gets hurt they're dead but i don't know about that like he wasn't even healthy at the beginning of the season but i like last year and they had a good regular season so like even if there's a little bit of injury there i think they they got enough i'm believing in the lightning and like they can get a goalie yeah if they really need to steve though more interestingly i have an answer to your question oh uh you asked about hat tricks and how many times teams lose games yes in the 24 25 season teams went 68 and nine
Starting point is 01:03:34 player scored a hat trick so 13 percent of the time they lost wow well oh i almost nailed it so 87 percent of the time they win yeah i said 80 wow so it's even wow i know crosby loves that stat weirdo um wow that is incredible yeah and the jets lost that's so the jets yeah they're they're one of those 13 i know all the jets fans listening are like thanks really interesting jesse appreciated it there's only one season's worth of sample size like maybe in the 23 24 season that number was higher or lower but 77 hat tricks last year here's a question how on earth did you find that there was so there's 77 hat tricks last year you can go on hockey reference and they have a list of all the hat tricks that happen so you go through the chart and the list
Starting point is 01:04:23 of hat tricks and then you see the final scores and you just calculate from look at you were any of them dueling did any of the hat tricks happen in the same game let's uh you now i gotta look through the 77 uh to find out you you're gonna have to wait a second you ever wanted to go through just tap dance all of these names yes the taylor hall braden point hat tricks happened on the same day but not the same game uh so that's not the same game Gensel, Rust had hat tricks on the same day. Different games. Oh, Lawton, Rust, and Gensel all had hat tricks on December 12th last year.
Starting point is 01:05:02 Scott Lawton? Yeah, Scott Lawton. Hell yeah. Against Detroit last year. Different games. I can't find any dueling hat tricks. Okay. So, no.
Starting point is 01:05:13 Shifley's hat trick against the Leafs happened the same day. Dylan Holloway had one. No dueling. Why? Why did your mind go in that? Well, because, I mean, if both teams have a guy who got a shutout, one of them has to, or a shutout, a hat trick, one of them has to lose.
Starting point is 01:05:29 Right. Yeah. Interesting stat. Anyways, there you go. Thank you. That was an answer. Thank you for that. Hockey reference.
Starting point is 01:05:35 It is a blessing to the hockey community. Everything's so categorized there. Easy to find. It's easy to find. Yeah, stuff like that. Like, oh, just how many hat tricks. And then you've got the score and everything. It's great to just pull up.
Starting point is 01:05:48 It's how I get all my stats and stuff. So, yeah, there you go. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. Starting point is 01:06:21 This show is sponsored by BetterHelp, and listen, we are all people who have been therapied. I don't know if that's the actual word. Therapized. Therapized. Therapized. And it's helpful. It's helpful. And you know, the thing about this time of year is we're, you know, we talk about the
Starting point is 01:06:37 beginning of September as like the start of the new year. Now we're into the month where it's like now it feels like grind again. Everybody's excited to start the year, the new year. I'm going to be there. I'm going to be there. Oh, I'm here. I'm here. they need therapy for picking out your halloween costume there's a lot of stress in that
Starting point is 01:06:55 see you know the way around it is don't participate in halloween which is that's something you should talk to your therapist about perhaps your inversion to halloween and how that goes back to your childhood trauma i hope your therapist calls you a nerd all right well no you can you can discover all the green flags about yourself uh and the people in your world actually it's very very helpful access a diverse network of over 30 000 credential therapists with a wide range of specialties you can easily switch therapists anytime at no cost as well betterhelp.com slash stp excuse me uh today uh to get 10 off your first month that's better help help.com slash sdp lane hudson and the haves have had to take a break now cj show
Starting point is 01:07:41 went real deep into this and we've talked about this now this is the third episode uh and i i I talk about it because it's a big story, A. But B, I love, like, we could talk about trade potential. Like, what top five cities we could put him in. Trades! No, I'm kidding. One thing that stood out to me about it, though, was CJ said they're not going to $10 million yet with this guy.
Starting point is 01:08:07 And that means, to me, Lane Hudson's looking for $10 million. Yes, that's what I get from it as well. i do not understand from either side's perspective where the fire is he's played one nhl season uh i don't know why he has to lock it down right now play two nhl seasons the floor what would lane hudson have to do this season for habs fans to look at a 72 million deal with him and be like i don't know about what if he goes from 66 points to 40 yeah well this is i think they'd still be pretty cool with this guy well dobson didn't have 40 points last year i know i had him in fantasy oh yeah and he was he was such a heartbreaker i was so mad i was so mad but
Starting point is 01:09:00 but i think i think the the fire for the lane hudson camp is that eighth year right okay the eight year and they they seem to want a long-term deal so if you can lock up 80 million bucks uh yeah you probably want to do of course the second part of that is that for the habs a little bit of cost certainty there as the cap goes up because then you have this guy around forever into his prime well into his prime and you're and you know by the time i mean if the cap is going up to 115 to 120 million bucks in two years what is it an eight right you know what i'm saying like it's it's your lane hudson would be a steal in his prime at that so i do think a long-term deal serves both sides although if i were lane i wouldn't do that i would go short term well so
Starting point is 01:09:47 i guess what i'm saying is like i understand that he has him and his camp have a side here and montreal can the montreal canadians organization has a side here but it's getting to a bad place and it really doesn't need to because there's not urgency there just take a break yep take a step back don't let it affect his game don't let it affect you and the way you conduct business it doesn't need to go to go there it doesn't need to go there and he has no leverage his leverage is he's lane hudson he's an incredibly talented player he won the calder last year but other than that he's an rfa well he could just sit he's not sitting how is he going to get more money sitting it didn't work for pk it also it's not going to work for you he's also not going to
Starting point is 01:10:43 get more money if he waits till past july 1st next year or past june 30th right you got to get that done if you want that eighth year yes he has nothing here he has nothing well other than going out there and ripping it jesse the part that stuck out to me was to like the family got involved and jesse and steve there's two people two sets of people that we think should never get involved the owner should never speak to the media even though we love it when they do the the family should never ever get involved directly with the no one should know your dad's name well they should they're gonna know no no they're gonna know that they're not but but like you shouldn't have a a family member on a call yeah that's why you hire an agent that is what
Starting point is 01:11:29 they are there for and so now the other barrier to getting this deal done are i don't even know if it's hurt feelings so much as it's annoyance from the habs like don't act like this and probably hurt feelings from the hudson camp in some regard but it sounds like honestly that okay all this goes on the family gets in the way they want a bunch of money kent he was a smart he's not going to pay him that money and then they're taking this break and that's the right thing to do so it sounds like right now they're kind of doing the strategy you want them to do yes even that they're going their separate ways in terms of the negotiation table we're not going to sit here and argue for this next six months we're gonna see how the next little bit plays out and
Starting point is 01:12:15 we'll revisit this when it's an appropriate time when cooler heads prevail and we have more idea of what lane hudson is this season yeah i know some habs fans are gonna look at me oh leaf in you know steve day this is me taking my leafs hat off i want this to continue to get worse and toxic and fester and ideally he gets traded or maybe just socks i think that'd be pretty cool if you just suck oh yeah no but taking my leaf hat off yeah let's all be calm cool-headed adults take a break and we'll figure it out once we've all calmed down yeah and i think it's an added bonus that ken hughes is doing this deal with a bunch of people he worked with for years yeah all these people are his former colleagues from what like three four years ago not long yeah so um it
Starting point is 01:13:07 sounds like they have a good handle on he has a good handle on how to handle this um in terms of getting this deal done eventually is it anytime soon who knows but it sounds like you you break away here you're not in the position where you get to decide i want a deal before opening day like jack eichel like kyle connor like connor mcdavid all of those guys who signed recently in those deals lane hudson you don't have that leverage here and in fact you have no leverage at all in this deal you can't be offer sheeted we have control of you for the next like 60 years offer sheet and we also have a 25 year old right shot defenseman who just signed an eight-year extension so if you do want to sit next year we'll be okay we've set precedence
Starting point is 01:13:47 with your position on our team we know what our internal cap is in terms of what we want to play players in your position you played one season there's no leverage here for him to get a deal done they can't bully kent hughes and the canadians to get this deal done so ken he was going to walk away we're going to come back when you understand that you're not in a position to do anything here and we'll get a deal done eventually or enjoy the pittsburgh penguins yeah crosby for hudson hudson to brazo scores the penguins have won the stanley cup and they defeating the leafs in six they can teach next eric carlson how to be eric carlson i know they're both in the same conference shut up this is screaming shorter term though i think so you
Starting point is 01:14:30 guys i believe that but to me like if you are actually trying to max out the dollars you make in your career then sign a shorter term deal do four do four do four at eight and a half nine habs fans will love you you know the team's on the rise they're going to get that second center that they need to get and then you know everything's going to be good they got two good young goalies like montebo dobish i think is a pretty good tandem i don't know that's that's great man it sounds like real cool headed logic we'll we'll see if any of that is applied to this negotiation whatsoever on a side note that's not related at all uh i remember going out for my 16th birthday i went to the keg i really wanted a steak and um my dad then went into the kitchen
Starting point is 01:15:16 and hovered over the chef while he made it and uh weirdly it got burned yeah anyway do you have anything else you want to talk about yeah i do uh before we hit the press conference uh which we haven't done a couple episodes i want to know if these austin matthews pants are real um i know people have seen this picture and it it's basically the toronto maple leaves love to post the pre-game fits that people put in and austin is walking in and his knee looks like it's bent the wrong way now some people think that his pants were redacted some people think some people thought it looked like they were drawn over they looked at yeah and and some people think it's like well that's just a baggy pant and you caught it in the wrong thing but i feel like i feel like this kind of looks a
Starting point is 01:16:07 little bit weird and i want to know did the toronto maple leafs cover up austin matthews pants if it you're like no and then you zoom in and you're like they did all they a hundred percent did until because like that you know where it is for me where i think they actually did cover them up is over the the right shoe or on on the shoe on your left when you're looking at it looks like they covered up a shoe there's no pant is cut that way so we're not paying nike any nike's not sponsoring this we're covering up the swooshes right what did he have on his pants so people did say maybe it was yankees pants i'm like i don't think so that was very funny do we is is justin down the hall yeah he has an answer oh does he oh yeah uh hey justin like an actual he knows
Starting point is 01:16:55 what happened i he thinks he knows the answer justin we need to ask you about pants he's coming he's coming this is great uh because justin here maddie can you pass him your headphones is a man of of fine taste yes and culture and social media and social media so he's adept and chronically online ism all right justin you're there can we hear you all right all right so austin matthews pants look like they were microsoft painted uh yeah were they i don't think so you don't think so what's your my guess was so i've heard of this before but like in japan they like their fashion industry is very obviously advanced and very popular and very special and yeah we've all seen too fast if you're they do sorry sorry tokyo they do a lot of um like specialty clothes dyeing
Starting point is 01:17:46 like uh like the the dyes and the pigments they use and stuff like that and one of the big things like that you see in japanese fashion is like trying to achieve like the blackest of black like stuff that doesn't like reflect light is super deep keeps that color longer like through multiple washes literally sucks the color into it yeah basically so and i i i've bought a shirt where it was like it came with a whole like story about like this is like the blackest black dye you can get and i was like it's probably that that was my guess got it yeah interesting well adam you interviewed for pants like that you interviewed brad for a living go to just ask for austin's number and yeah i'll just i'll just do that you're like what's up with your pants man thanks oh wait
Starting point is 01:18:27 a sec jesse has credentials why aren't you at leaves practice today asking austin about his pants i have to i have to sit here and do this show i'm texting somebody who might know uh i'm gonna ask them if uh if the pants are blacked out what cj does is a waste of time this is this is what being an insider really is yeah this is we will get to the bottom of this we will get to the bottom of his bottoms that came out i don't i don't know no i like that yeah we'll get to the bottom people don't want to get to the bottoms of austin matthews bottom hey you know you know what i mean uh but yeah i just thought like that that it's it's so strange because if they were baggy pants and his his leg is going forward then the pants would come would wrap around the knee
Starting point is 01:19:15 which is why it doesn't make sense that the knee is kind of hooked in like that you know what i'm saying like that's how deep i got with this it looks like one of those pictures that's like drawn by a professional artist but they let their kid finish it yeah or where the legs are too long and it's kind of like a you know it looks ai it does look ai but ai from a couple years you're the stupid ai that's not what legs look like except it's real i think unless it's not i hope jesse finds the answer for us before the i don't know if i'm gonna get an answer uh in enough time i gotta know i'm gonna text brad for living right now i'm gonna text brad thanks for coming on the network yeah thanks for coming on the network can you tell us about austin's pants hey man
Starting point is 01:19:55 what is your captain i'm not asking about steven lorenz's pants all right what is the captain of the toronto maple leafs wearing tell me now toronto media scary i wish um i wish we could have delayed the brat interview to get an answer i know i know i know this is this is the most important leaf topic we've had in years i know it's a hot dog is it a hot dog or like a hot dog a sandwich or not wearing pants is he wearing what happened to his damn pants i know i know and that thing is is like there's no readily available answers on it either people are all asking the same question is austin wearing real pants people are saying it gives them this vibe jesse i'm gonna send you a picture oh no let's john lennon
Starting point is 01:20:48 one we'll come back to it uh the next thing what's next uh well that was kind of it i i was gonna go to the press conference now if you wanted to two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Starting point is 01:22:10 Well, that's helpful. Yes. I think they had a good time of year. There's now a night to light. Yes, that's right. Listen, if you had to have light the night in the middle of the summer, the kids could not stay up for light the night. It'd be like 9.30.
Starting point is 01:22:21 Yeah, but now it's like a 6 o'clock. Light the midnight. No, we don't want that. It's just the night. Light the 7.15. So this year, with your help, they can raise $6 million or more for blood cancer because that's what they raised last year and they're trying to do even more this year. Shout out Drew Edgar on Instagram who DM'd me. because you know this show loves a good fat guy corner oh hell yeah and david alter is always
Starting point is 01:23:13 adamant that the media meal at little caesar's arena is the best media meal in the entire national hockey is it because of the pizza yeah you're named after a restaurant you better be yeah better yes but uh it's not because of the pizza at all they have just a fantastic spread go check out his tiktok he does media meals for all the nhl teams but it appears that the red wings have passed that along to the fans because they have updated their menu at little caesars and it looks fantastic so wow the picture just got thrown up and these guys started salivating so i'm the vince mcmahon looking at stacy kiebler meme holy cow so for the detroit red

Starting point is 01:24:55 google ask why is new ski's bacon so good new ski works with higher quality hogs crossbred with pie trained pigs because of the latter's excellent lean to fat rate the pigs can make pie they cure their fresh slabs of bacon in brine for at least 24 hours hang them to dry for a day or so and then smoke them for at least another 24 hours the the crucial thing about this burger and i hope it looks as good as the picture it does in real life i would pay that 16 whatever they're charging because if i go to a restaurant and i get a triple smash burger in toronto oh that's that's 16 bucks or whatever 16 you'd be lucky so if little caesars is charging that amount for that with this high quality food i'm paying that also smash burgers are the best burgers yes they are the best burgers
Starting point is 01:25:43 i don't want a thick burger i want a smash burger i 100 agree with that no chance i'm eating this in my seat no you gotta that's a stand up and eat it around the table i'm gonna eat it at a table and i and i'm gonna put the table so that it's facing the wall so you can't see the carnal animalistic way i'm just mucking this burger but steve if you're facing the wall everybody's gonna see you shit yourself damn that's a great point yeah that's because that might be coming i don't even know if steve would notice after you eat i wouldn't you know what a great point i've never seen a person whose body like shits faster after eating than steve's like that's what jess is reacting like like no like everybody else is 24 hours steve's like i just ate i got a shit right
Starting point is 01:26:29 now it's like it's instant reaction and it's you put you put something in your mouth and something absolutely no one needs to know this about me and also and his wife will back me up on this mrs dangle it's 20 minutes in the bathroom at least you're gonna be i think we're gonna go to it on this might be tmi for the yeah oh yeah we might have reached tmi's territory all right next now this is my shit extremely my shit that's you might want to rephrase that yeah we're just talking about sorry the ramen bowl okay so let me explain this to the listening audience what is on the screen is a ramen bowl noodles soaked in rich broth sauteed bok choy soft boiled egg green onions pickled fresno chili crisp fried onions served with a choice of grilled chicken breast

Starting point is 01:29:53 to fuck up an osmos on the way home yo why don't we uh on the rock why don't we just go to detroit man that's so much farther than osmos there's like one near us i think maddie you can take us off there so you can see the cocktails that they got. Oh, I like this. Which cocktail are you having? Oh, it doesn't say what's in the cocktail. Origins era, Dominance era, and the Dynasty era. I'm not having any of them because my stomach would turn inside out. Origins because
Starting point is 01:30:15 it's orange. That's why. I'll move on from the cocktails. The Dominance era one comes with a little octopus. I'd get that one for the octopus. It's very cute. Then we got Gnocchi. What the hell? Is this a fine dining restaurant serving Gnocchi at a hockey game? This is crazy. Blue
Starting point is 01:30:31 cheese. Parmesan. chili flakes called them ganache what i had a girlfriend in high school called them ganache your high school what 16 yeah yeah let's probably learn the word yeah yeah gnocchi oh and a lobster roll lobster roll come on do that do the brew do the bruins have uh lobster rolls because i feel like they should they ought to oh a pineapple jalapeno margarita i'm in casamigos i'm in it you love me some casamigos you either have the best photographer in the league or the best food in the league you might have both they have the best food in the league by what i hear from people in the media i can you mainly date it i would show up to every gate like
Starting point is 01:31:16 when do the gates open right this is a place where if you didn't have dinner you can have dinner at little little season i'm not having dinner before they go to little what the moment if it's a 707 start and the gates open it they better be five i'm showing up at five i'm ordering a drink and a meal probably going to the bathroom and then ordering another drink and another meal then i'm gonna order something to bring to my seat i'm not one sandwich what what two sandwiches three beers no sandwiches sandwiches um hey by the way just some uh breaking news it's looking like we are leaning towards elaine hudson deal
Starting point is 01:32:06 hilarious uh according to uh jonathan bernier not the goalie but the reporter uh from uh he's a french canadian reporter uh i believe so um long-term deal expected to be under or around nine and a half for dobson if it goes to eight years dobson under dobson dobson like noah dobson oh can you repeat i understand i understand so so the expectation is that hudson's deal if it went to eight years would be in and around what dobson is making okay which is great i don't understand that for lane hudson at all um good for the habs yeah i guess though we've never been presented with 60 or 70 million dollars i think i might sign if you can secure the bag you secure the freaking bag maybe you should yeah like people would
Starting point is 01:32:58 listen four years is better if you're trying to maximize your value but what if you could have generational wealth and never worry if you're looking at this from dad's perspective there's four of them ah yes get lane done and move on to coal hollywood kid um okay any other questions damn um i i don't know if you want to hit on this i want to know i asked yesterday if in the show and didn't get in the show oh sorry gary betman uh speaking about conor mcdavid this damn thing sorry so gary was in toronto and for opening night one and he did an impromptu scrum and cj was there and they asked him a whole bunch of questions and obviously they wanted him to hit on the conor mcdavid contract that was signed well it would have been like a day before
Starting point is 01:33:38 at the time. And Gary Bettman's opinion on the Conor McDavid contract is this. He says, first of all, it's a lot of money by any standard. And I think it's a testament to Conor's passion for the game and his commitment to Edmonton. If I were an Oilers fan, I'd be excited. And if I were his teammate, I'd be thrilled to know the team is going to have some more flexibility in terms of creating a team that's been even more, if it's possible, successful. let's not forget they've been to the stanley cup final twice in the last two years i think that in the final analysis that speaks so well as to a superstar viewing his role in the game and his personal values now if you're an oiler fan of course you're excited yes um gary betman makes
Starting point is 01:34:24 more than what connor mcdavid makes now i know that right yeah that was in the group chat i did not know that i thought his number was eight i learned that uh yesterday the extension which was done a couple years ago at the height of the kyle beach um scandal pays him way more than that he's the highest paid employee in nhl history what yeah if you get because of how long his tenure is no one has been paid more by the national hockey league than gary bettman more than any other player ever and if you're excluding like ownership obviously yeah employee gary bettman is the highest paid player of all like if you were to put his stats on puckpedia yeah the highest and you rank it by people who've made money directly being paid by the national hockey league
Starting point is 01:35:07 he's above every player ever his highest paid employee guys guys guys you're allowed to get off the bus and show up at the game in track pants now so like who's really winning you know what i mean you know what i mean no nhl players are so good at this they're so good at this listen i don't have a problem with connor doing it and i think no i think the the thing is is that it's two years right yes so if you know people are like well eichel got 13 and a half or capriza they signed for eight i have a problem with the guy making more than the person he's speaking about um saying it's commending connor for leaving money on the table yeah i i really took um i thought it was awful that he would start his answer with first of all it's a lot of money by any standard
Starting point is 01:35:53 he's trying to couch his statement by saying you know what 12 and a half million dollars a lot of money guys no one has there's one guy in the world that can do what connor mcdavid does yeah one guy yeah one guy the the reality of that 12 and a half million dollars is that he is underpaid by every respect of what he brings to the value of the edmonton or what he brings to the value of the national hockey league you can argue like the 20 million dollar max that he can make is very undervalued he should making like 80 million dollars a year in terms of the value and the money being generated by the ownership and you always hear like oh he's a professional athlete should be making all that money that money is still being made yeah it's going to
Starting point is 01:36:33 ownership there's no reason you should be advocating for them to make that money over connor if yeah if i charge you ten dollars and he's and i say okay you're gonna make one dollar that ten dollars and i'm gonna make nine but then people are upset they're like why should steve dangle make one dollar there and let's cut his pay because that's too much money i'm still making the ten dollars yes you're giving me a bigger cut connor should be in every respect getting more money and gary buttman advocating for connor mcdavid to be uh just like doing such a great thing for the national hockey league is so backwards and underhanded he's just happy that this player isn't making a lot of money because then it can keep revenues down for the players
Starting point is 01:37:17 and more ownership can get more money. And for that reason, I hope the Minnesota Wild win the Stanley Cup. Yeah. That would be incredible. I've heard a lot of shit talked about that Kaprizov deal. And I have to be honest with you. Barring some crazy health thing,
Starting point is 01:37:35 that's what he should be making. And that's what all, like, what do you think Kale McCarr is going to make? Because we have this chat in the CJ show group chat a couple of nights ago, or maybe it was last night. and like there was a con i think eric johnson who's been a teammate of kale and is probably slightly biased said listen quinn hughes is an incredible player kale mccarr is country mile
Starting point is 01:38:00 the best defenseman in the league in the world and you look at his stats you look at the way he plays who is he even comparable to and it was cj that said it's bobby orr and two players in nhl history have a higher points per game currently than or no not nhl history since uh 67 68 yeah two defensemen have a higher points per game than kel mccarr bobby or paul coffee yeah end of list kel mccarr is going to make a fortune and he should and i look at i look at what caprizo for instance uh making in in minnesota he should uh and it's not just like you can build it i'm sorry but you can build a team around that the toronto maple leafs ran into an issue when they had four guys making that but you can have one or two in a flat cap in a flat cap the idea was correct
Starting point is 01:38:54 but it was supposed to go up and it didn't because a pandemic happened and they didn't adjust the salary cap still to this day if you want to hear anybody talking about this alan walsh will talk but the salary cap right now is deflated on purpose it should be at like 110 today and in the next three years they're going to get to that 113 i think they've set it at three years from now and that's where we should be uh previous years based on the revenues of the nhl that are exploding yep this game is in a really good place and this money is being made and these players need to make more money no it is uh games in a really good place compared to where it's been which is the fucking sewer yes it's a toilet um like compared to mlb nfl nba it's not comparable
Starting point is 01:39:44 it's not comparable we're living like in a bachelor apartment looking at it like it's the playboy mansion because we've been living in a dumpster since 1993 and you know maybe that's maybe that's good enough yep that we feel that way no one has taken more money out of players pockets than gary betman no one and so to have him get on a panel and praise mcdavid for taking a haircut is disgusting yeah yeah frankly knowing that he makes more than anyone and by the way both can be true mcdavid doing a thing for his team and oilers fans being excited about it is a good thing how about it's true and i don't want to hear your dumb face say it yeah and because your dumb face belongs to your dumb legacy because because of the intent
Starting point is 01:40:37 behind it with yes yes gary's job is to try to make superstars make less money gary's intentions are nefarious connor's intentions are pure oilers fans feelings are pure uh gary is like this is this is my freaking dream do you know how old this man turned in june isn't he 80 73 oh it feels like 80 it does and he makes how much 15 a year is it 15 isn't that's what i thought that's what it was yeah yeah yeah fucking retire leave us all alone the i think you nailed it there with with what uh gary's trying to imply with mcdavid there like he is hoping that this is like a trend you know and mcdavid pushes all the superstars to take less money and that sort of stuff so then the the cap hits can stay down and nobody's can make as much money but in reality this is an
Starting point is 01:41:33 outlier yeah and no other national hockey league player needs to look at mcdavid and say i'm gonna take uh what is he making like 15 less than he should be nobody should be doing that you should be going to get what your value is worth yeah i think it's a i think if the oilers had not gone to two straight Stanley Cup finals, I don't think he's doing this either in the same way. I think he believes in this group and hey, he's got the proof.
Starting point is 01:41:55 It's a unique situation. Yeah. Steve, if you want to compare AAVs across sports for your little thing about our baby league, the NHL, The Athletic put this on Instagram. They have...
Starting point is 01:42:08 Who are half of these people? Cooper Flagg is the number one draft pick from the NBA. Has not played a game yet. Dennis Schroeder! Yeah. Cooper Flagg was drafted number one overall last June by the Dallas Mappers. He has not played a basketball game yet.
Starting point is 01:42:27 His entry salary will be $15.7 million. Andrew Benatendi plays for the Chicago White Sox, who are some of the worst baseball you could ever imaginable. Makes $15 million. He hit like 260 last year, 220, I forget. Yeah, and you go down the list. George Russell, who's in Adam Wild's world. Two athletes named Cooper paid more than Conor McDavid.
Starting point is 01:42:50 George Russell, who's in Adam Wilde's world, is a driver for Mercedes, makes $15 million a year. And he's getting an extension where he'll make $20 million very soon. There you go. Dennis Schroeder, who could not be bothered to play for the Raptors when he was here, had like two good games, makes $14.8 million. There's a lot of guys across pro sports who are not even in the same caliber of Conor McDavid compared to their peers who make many millions more than him. Now, you look at this list and tell me hockey's doing great. it is doing great i think it's just that it could be doing a lot better we're in a we are i've said it before we're in a golden era of hockey playing athletes yep um no one has taken more money
Starting point is 01:43:31 out of nhl players pockets than gary bettman and that list yeah so we just don't want to hear him say it that's i don't want to hear him fucking say it you probably just don't want to hear him talk that too go away well it's insane you're still it's also kind of insane i have to say just generally watching people who are getting older hanging on to positions of power like buddy you're gonna be dead by the time any of this give yield to the people that are going to have to live through the decisions you're making do you know what i mean whatever happened to moving on yeah what happened to you know retiring it's your turn whatever happened to the beach whatever they hate the beach like you man yeah but i'll find some you'll find me in a kayak
Starting point is 01:44:15 you know what it is like you know what it is they're worried about and i think this happened with one of the nhlpa heads at one point um they're worried about the day that they're not in that job anymore and nobody calls them that's what it is you're in a position of power it feels good and you feel important and you feel like you've got purpose to your days so we're all we're all gonna be victims of your weird little addiction yeah oh great we are such a good spot to be in that's so healthy i'm just saying that's so good i'm so happy yeah that's why like you're supposed to have like hobbies so you can move on to your hobbies i was having such a good time jesse anything else you want to add all those dudes too awful husbands and they don't like
Starting point is 01:44:56 their wives that's part of it too i don't want to go home so they stick around at these jobs and do that you're speaking in general i know nothing about mrs bedman oh yeah no no yeah that wasn't a shot no that wasn't scary even married if i want to take a shot of gary i will directly take a shot of gary i'm not we don't have to be worried about that i have no idea um buy tickets to the rec room oh yeah yeah to a rec room uh next weekend saturday leaf's cracking later on too but we're gonna be there doing a live show really excited a lot of tickets sold already and it's always a wicked time because it's like a big stage the food's crazy it's i don't know i i love those shows i love the rec room it's our favorite favorite venue touch a good spot yeah it's
