and the big news today is alex steves is not on the ice at marley's practice called up to the leafs he is the ahl leader in goals with 29 in 40 games wow this is legitimately like kind of cool it's i mean he did play for the leafs earlier this year and did nothing okay all right all right he did he did nothing was he put in the right spot oh oh that's oh okay sorry we got to bring up alex steve's and make sure that we make it good for alex steve no earn his spot is that how that works is it a little stinky here because adam's trying to poo-poo on alex steve he is i'm just saying man uh i would love for him to be successful no and bobby mcmahon was a great fourth liner you're right but we saw he was awesome as a fourth liner but we saw it

The important thing about Alex Steeves is that he's 25 years old. It's not like this is a 32 year old man putting up crazy AHL numbers or even like 30 yeah this is somebody who can still be reaching their peak of NHL powers and he displayed that he's a fantastic goal scorer at the AHL level now put him in a position with the Toronto Maple Leafs where all he has to do is focus on scoring goals and he might do that at the NHL level too and then the Leafs magically

found a great goal scorer has scored a single goal at the nhl level in 11 games wow cool how many did how many games did it take bobby mcmahon to score his first nhl goal you might know that i don't know that it was a lot it was he scored one against detroit that should have counted and didn't so is he playing center or is he playing wing because the leafs need a center minton i don't think is the answer right now for the playoffs they should try him at center okay with i was i was gonna say like you can take robertson off the third line and throw steves in there but you could have both that'd be crazy there is only one puck i don't know you could have them there with mcmahon oh my god a third line with like purpose mcmahon steves and domey or

Well, here's the difference. the difference is canada uh their emergency replacement was literally an emergency

replacement yeah the americans emergency replacement is a guy who should have been there the whole time the guy on the roster but he was injured he was injured he was injured um listen as a canadian that's not awesome but it's awesome for the tournament in this oh it's awesome for the tournament but also in the spirit of fairness i think that's how it should be i agree and uh when it comes to thomas harley he did have a really good game against the americans and a lot of canadians wanted to see him in the game against finland under the rules even though he was granted permission to play in that game against finland i don't think he should be eligible he's there on an emergency basis well uh and the emergency the united states

has seven or six defensemen ready to go and they're still bringing quinn hughes in he's on the roster now that's the rule oh that yeah they they kind of that kind of they manipulated the rules mid-turn yeah because it's a dumb rule if somebody gets injured you should be able to replace them why wouldn't you do that this that's stupid is of course such a gary betman ass tournament yeah well he leaves in just enough gray he always always in every situation leaves in gray so that he can manipulate it just a little i just don't understand no no adam the point isn't that i disagree or agree with the decision uh it's just crazy that they've left it like this where it's hey mid-tournament we can make kind of the decisions they want i think that in the end they

made the right decision i mean yeah i think the roster should have been like 25 guys that you have on rotation that can come in whenever you want because that it's truly best on best have the best people available but the idea that they just like you know what he's an emergency replacement but midway through the tournament now he's actually on the roster it's goofy nonsense that the nhl always does listen i hate i hate to defend them on this but let me let me put it to you this way obviously this was always going to be the case when they said nope those are the rosters and no one else can come i was like bullshit if people get injured absolutely and by the way oh no we don't want more stars in our tournament no totally like f off right but what it

he'll be like no vegas is my priority are you kidding me i know are you kidding me thursday night you want to you don't want to be there i think you want to be there i know he pulled out and then that night he played 26 minutes and that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way we don't know what's wrong with them no no we don't no we don't we have no idea you know what i mean like you can't tell me there aren't a bunch of players who i mean the narrative is what you want it to be i think certain players are going to come into this tournament and you know oh man they wouldn't be on the streak right now without that tournament yep they're so hot they're hot as a pistol other guys are going to come out banged up man they're going to come out like brady kachuk has just

floored it floored it for three games and he had to pull out of last night matthew kachuk probably it has a groin floored it groin issue though floored it uh everyone on the united states has floored it there have been a few passengers throughout the tournament i don't know if any of them wear an american jersey no i don't think there's a single player on team usa that anyone's upset about i know jeremy swayman's riding the shit out of that bike like like i don't think they have a single passenger right they should have bikes on the bench for the coaches um you know some guys are going to come out hotter for this tournament other guys their season will not be the same and it's difficult to judge alex petrangelo i'm not without him no no yeah but

a lot of people are i'm asking how you think he feels i think he misses this he definitely wants to be there but he can't else he would because you watch these games you watch what happened on saturday he has to give 110 if he's out there he can't half-ass it and he knows that if i was there i wouldn't be able to give all of that i could or i'd probably risk injury so he can't be there but he probably definitely probably wishes he would you know but he can't because he's physically not capable it's a bit of a shame he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt as someone who well he should get the one a gold medal for his country like just no one remembers or cares he would have been one of three players to play on the 26th world cup team for canada and then

also play on this team that's like he's 35 years old and has an ailment and he's like i can't go out there alex petrangelo is 35 i believe so i think last time i checked guys i covered in junior 35 let me let me triple check uh his age uh you're right 35 years old 1990 january 18th a month ago he had his 35th birthday and he's like i i know that hockey is a hard sport to play and the intensity of these games will be ramped up to a million and if i'm there i have to be at that level and he said i can't do that i have to just play out the rest of this regular season and be healthy for that so i like he's probably really sad but you can't blame him for making that decision yeah guys know their bodies athletes know their bodies that's a tough one well i will say

the the whatever makeshift trophy they have for this tournament uh that's what uh that's what Friedman said on 32 Thoughts that it looks like it might be close to playoffs. Technically, it's week to week, I think is his quote. But it looks like it might be close to playoffs. So they might just hold now. Hey, listen, guys. It's almost exactly two months. Yeah, this time, two months from now, we'll be in the playoffs.

I'm pumped, man. But let's talk about the ratings for a second here. According to John Shannon, friend of the show, Wednesday on Sportsnet, the Canada-Sweden game, got 2.1 million canadians watching and another 1 million americans watched wow on thursday finland united states 1.1 million people watched on sportsnet on espn another 1.55 million watched in the united states okay jeez canada usa saturday night 4.4 million people both sides of the border so like so that's that's the total audience yeah that is an enormous number uh sorry

i'm wrong on that actually espn's telecast of last night's game according to sportico a staggering 4.4 million viewers that's so that's just the sweden game no sorry the the canada usa game okay canada usa game not the sweden you're all over the place adam wild well i'm reading from their article the next right okay i got uh uh game seven of oilers panthers averaged 7.66 million viewers on abc now it helps that it was on abc of course but uh that is an enormous number and going on at the same time was the nba all-star game which was widely panned as much as everybody loves seeing nba superstar mac mcclum jump over a car yo if if the nhl had ambassadors like the nbas gary betman would have them killed what do you mean draymond green was a comment oh and he

said it sucks yeah he said it's on air talking about how crap the all-star game yeah well and you know what was amazing is that like listen uh mac mcclung is is electric to watch in the slam Dunn competition no one cares and NBA stars don't want to don't they don't want to do it uh nobody wants to do it and and so there so that was to me that was the price of admission it's not watching the NBA all-stars put up 175 points on each other it's it's watching the slam dunk competition and you have a non-NBA player winning it and doing crazy stuff oh they got the celebrity game too you like Drewski's free throws don't care right and apparently people were talking about the and i didn't see this so it's not totally fair of me to comment but uh people were saying oh it's so

nice they're playing basketball in the middle of this kevin hart special um and so mr beast had some sort of hundred thousand dollar competition um and and what is amazing about this is if i had told you two years ago even last year when the all-star game was in toronto uh oh the the the nhl is going to out i don't know if they outrated but out relevant the nba i i don't think you would have believed me and i think it would have been right not to and finally for once they went head to head with something oh yeah they they just said no we're just doing this yeah they're always making uh to put it in nba terms business decisions and avoiding the the you know going head-to-head with you know maybe they should avoid going head-to-head with the nfl maybe they should

but everyone else give it a shot for god's sake do you have faith in your product or not right and you have this going up against the all-star game we've waxed poetically about the nba and the job they've done for a long time in the show nba didn't have a chance no not a chance hockey won out it's awesome it's been a long time it's been a long time like i i'm i think the number one thing in hockey's way at least in terms of cultural relevance is just visibility like every it matters what stage you perform on and what i mean by that is like if you go you could be the best talent in the world and you go to uh a small outlet with a small following you're gonna disappear right and that's what happened with the nhl after that first

full season lockout was they went to the outdoor life network and you know and things started to pick up when they got back onto nbc and now it's even better that it's espn and tnt although we're not still there we need more abc games right yeah but abc reaches more households it's like if i were to if gary betman were to call us tomorrow and be like guys we want to put all nhl games on sdpn i'd be like gary i'm thrilled that's fantastic but just expect that there's going to be a bit of a viewership drop especially if we pay a wallet and and so that is we'd be rich hockey would not be we don't have the reach right you need to have the reach and and so i think that the nhl finally is in a place where the reach is available where you can get into

the average person's home who's not thinking about this stuff right uh the other thing that kind of slipped under the radar guys is there will be an all-star game next year and it will be in long island so there is going to be an olympic tournament and an all-star game february 2026 so we're going to get both of them in the same month i think it's weird too and i wondered what you guys thought jesse you've been saying that this was going to happen and it happened yeah because they announced it like last year it was a curious decision i would would have just foregone the all-star game for a little bit and just gone world cup olympic bring it back in 27 or something yeah whenever there's a free space in

the calendar because it seems like it's wholly unnecessary now um the nfl has gone completely away from an all-star an all-star game their pro bowl they play flag football and they have they have skills competitions now in between the week between the conference finals and the super bowl they just do that every year and that's a lot better than actually trying to play football Because football, just like hockey, is a game that you can't play at 60%. Once you're on the ice, you have to be out there trying, else the product looks terrible. And that's what we saw in the All-Star Games.

We saw guys not trying to play hockey, and it wasn't a good product. So I don't know. I would just forego the All-Star Game forever. I think there's – because it's such a big corporate event in all of these sports. Like the NBA, that's all it is right now. It's a giant corporate event. They make a lot of money off of it. It's an opportunity for their advertisers to have this moment in the season with all of the stars there.

But they need to create some sort of other event that's just that. You know, it needs to be like NHL Fan Expo every year where you fly in the guys. And we don't need the game and everything in that. Like, we just we need something like this every year where it's Four Nations, it's World Cup, it's Olympics. And your big advertiser event needs to be some sort of fan expo or make it the draft. Make the draft that. And maybe you go away from the... No, we need another All-Star game.

No, maybe you go away from... I know they want to do... What is the word they're using for? Decentralized draft right now. I don't agree with that. I think that's where you make your big corporate event should be at the draft where you fly everybody in. Have some of the superstars there

doing their corporate schmooze thing and make it that because that's always been a great fan tradition. And let's forego All-Star games. You can do a non-decentralized draft, right? You can have everybody there and not make the broadcast ass you don't have to have every team come up with their 40 fucking people and thank 40 million people like have the commissioner come out like he did make the make

the draft pick on behalf of the new jersey devils or blah blah blah blah so we don't have to thank the city 40 million times and make jokes and all that shit and someone's granddaughter is on the stage who the hell is that we don't need that like i agree with you jesse i think you need to have some sort of corporate event that the nhl owns the nhl does not own the olympics you need to have that that's what the all-star is it usually is a great way let's be honest it's great for the city that it's in it's great for flying clients in and making them feel special and having the meat you know and it's good for business to do the all-star game it's not a great product so they're gonna have to find a way to make this good and i think i got it what is it skills competition okay

in the afternoon early afternoon and it's not a long thing it starts at like noon last two hours it's only nikita kucherov night one of the yeah no he's just trolling bro hilarious bro yeah oh yeah everyone's laughing so hard um night night one of the draft next day is day two oh have the skills competition same weekend as the draft oh that's fun now you might not get you might not get the stanley cup winners there well they're hung over and sore that's fine like you have the like listen attendance will be poor from the stars um but they're not going to do it begrudgingly you might have some players that actually want to be there the only thing i

i would need to look into is how difficult would it be to uh get the arena set up all right it's ice and in five hours it's got to be the draft floor or you could just do it in different locations or that no i would do it in cities that can support both like vegas is a perfect location for that because you hold the skills competition at t-mobile and you do the draft to the sphere you do something like that in in la in la at crypto you you do the skills competition then the one next door what is the la live or whatever the the venue is that just for concerts next door hold it there you know hold the draft there you do do it in in uh out in inglewood or wherever they have the the big stadium there for the nfl team yeah i love that do it there like

there's there's options here in cities that can support both so do both and i think that's a great idea i'm gonna ask a really dumb question as someone who once bought fake tickets to madison square garden so i didn't get to go inside would it be possible to do one thing on one floor of madison square garden and do another thing yes of course it would on another floor yeah but it means the nhl's got to rent space from dames dolan again and they ah well we just said the sphere they should yeah that's it that's his that's what i'm saying yeah yeah so but i feel like they should never do the draft away from vegas again why would you move it to any other city no disrespect to any other city it should be a vegas event i think we know because you're going to make people listen

if you want to have that skills competition there you got to make it a city that's a real destination that they can come and have fun and bring their families vegas is perfect for that it's meant to be that i are we gonna hand out the cup in august next year well i'm trying oh you mean because of the calendar no because it's roughly it's roughly ish what we've taken a break here for four nations right because we've gotten three weeks off right so if just two plus the one no it's not three weeks the it's it's been 10 days hasn't it and then we don't come back to the 22nd damn well the olympics if i remember correct the olympics are two full weeks and the last game oh i thought it was longer than that no olympics are two weeks they're always two

weeks but they the last game for hockey because it is the marquee event when nhl players are there yes is the last day yes so are they going to go right to all-star so all the players that play in the olympics like ah you don't have to do all-star we'll just all-star should be before so you have a before i think it's before on the calendar so they're gonna have the first ever some star game that's what i'm saying like it's a weird it's a weird yeah it's a weird decision just to host all-star again i'm not into it yeah not into it like you've given me a taste of something so much better um i didn't i didn't come to popeyes for the biscuits yeah give it i'll i'll eat them i like them but it's a game for the chicken if you're gonna do 26 uh

olympics 28 world cup all that stuff then i think that the all-star game in between those years on the 27 and the 29 are gonna make a lot of sense good you're a good little you know hey this is fun yeah uh great can't wait for next year yeah right yes no they figured something out with the four nations because you get games where guys are trying and you start the conversation with the nba like that's the whole thing the the product sucks because nobody out there is trying and nobody we've discovered that the watching public through the previous generations okay maybe a little we were entertained by the all-star game it definitely had its moments in the early 2000s we all remember vince carter we all didn't mind those all-star games or we saw the spectacular

stuff but now that we see the stars so often and the games like we're more interested in the actual games part of it we don't care to see these exhibition matches so you have to manufacture something that the fans actually want the nfl like to their credit they've done a great job because of how their season is aligned where they only have one game for each playoffs they've made their corporate schmooze event the super bowl where everybody's there for two weeks like they don't need the all-star event because they have their corporate schmooze event and they don't have like the the top stars playing in the in the in the pro bowl skills thing because they're in the super bowl that week but they're all there doing media and everything so you get all of that stuff

and you have to go away from what you've had traditionally for the last 50 years of sports in the nba and nhl where you play this all-star game mid-season and just create something new and credit the nhl for doing it now continue that manufacture something else so we don't have the all-star game and that draft skills competition thing is great because then you get the same kind of kind of event around that and move forward and the nba needs to revamp the way they do things too because yeah they're only failing each and every year the conversation just gets worse around the nba and all-star weekend and it makes them look bad it makes them look bad and and and frankly sometimes perception is reality the nba probably tripled whatever the nhl rated on saturday

night and that's just cultural relevance that's years and years of building and all of that but there's no question what the more entertaining of the events were this weekend yeah and i and And here's the thing, All-Star as a format is very old. I'm going to give you a stat. Gordie Howe fought at an All-Star game. Do you know what year? 1959. Jesse, give me a year.

65. 1948. Oh, my God. Holy shit! Wow. When did the Korean War begin? He fought... Okay, it's so insane.

So, first off, the All-Star game was in November, And back then it was the rest of the all-stars from the other team versus the previous Stanley Cup winners. Which is kind of a cool format. It's a cool format. That could make some sense, right? But Gordie Howe fought Gus Mortensen, who was a Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman.

He was just 20 years old and in his third season with the Red Wings. And this is the point that, like, okay, I just gave you the date, 1948, right? you know cliff fletcher is barely in his 30s at that point but my point my point to that is like that's a really old idea you know it's not totally surprising like art you know it's like hey we're still doing late night show formats from the 1940s you know what i mean television no filming elvis from the hips down it's exactly it's all moved on from then except for this idea that the all-star game could be good and in no sport is it good 1948 is crazy yes crazy right i mean you're you're talking pre-color television you're talking probably this game wasn't on

television like you'd have no idea i have no idea i bet it sounded insane on a refrigerator size radio yeah no it's clearly an outdated format and we've all jumped the shark on it as a watching public and we don't really care about it anymore and the nba conversation around has gotten really toxic where internally like their own players are criticizing it and and like that's that's just they're at a desperation point with this thing what did you think about lebron uh showing up but then a few hours before pulling out yeah that was that wasn't a great look that was now i was thinking just as an aside maybe the nba knew they didn't want to announce it but they wanted him there because you can't sell the game necessarily without lebron at it because he's still the

biggest star okay so they did sell it and if they did know i want my money back okay i just want to know what you guys thought of that because like is it was because people lebron's taken a lot of heat for this and that to me doesn't feel like i feel like lebron obviously would show up anyway and be in the crowd but i think that's the nba going let's not tell anyone about this otherwise our ticket prices are going down like what what do you think the theory is it was a protest oh because he doesn't like the format that's at very least that's what's floating around reddit and we all know it isn't that is the news front page of the internet baby wouldn't he just say that though because he's lebron like what are you going to say to him well he might get find a whole

big bunch i don't know imagine oh yeah no i'm just pulling out of this i don't want to play then it's a whole thing right but if he comes he takes the pictures is it crappy jesse like do you think it was people like oh that's really shitty lebron like i don't think it was great like i i think it was a little too too last minute i didn't like like i love the the way the nfl props up their own players and we do it in hockey really well too like guys on pre-games when when they're when they're talking to the tnt panel and their headset because you know sports net doesn't do that um up here uh so when the americans are doing the broadcast and they're talking with the guys and it's all fun and jovial and they're always hyping up the players and they'll criticize the game too

but it's always a great relationship with the fans and the media the thing that bothered me the most i guess about the lebron stuff is the way nba commentators are so quick to criticize the game and the players like everybody jump and whenever there's a small issue with with the nba and the players or anything that goes wrong we see the old guard jump on the new generation and i hate that relationship that nba commentators have with the players and it doesn't seem like they like the game like you you watch you watch the guys on the nba tnt panel looks like all of them like shack especially like he just loves dumping on on the new generation we had it better in the 90s were tougher and all that stuff these guys are so much more skilled than every 90s basketball player

and i'd love to hear people who talk about the nba say these things and you never get that but we get it in other sports and it's a shame that we've reached this point with the nba where it's like oh we all got a pile on lebron like that like fucking enjoy the game do you guys even like basketball sometimes i wonder when these guys are talking about i mean no they tell you no kevin garnett is always on the paul pierce and kevin garnett are always just like well it was so much better kevin's kevin garnett's a guy who loves basketball yeah he plays for the pure joy of the game and that's like you you question his decisions online on on uh yeah him having a million burner accounts and going at fans on twitter all day that's durant durant

kevin durant i'm talking garnett i was talking garnett because hey i find uh kg and paul pierce are grumpy oh oh that's where i was going no durant like paul pierce isn't even entertaining to watch kevin garnetta at least i'm like okay that's fun yeah yeah but i just you're like kevin garnett and paul pierce sorry i thought you said durant when you said garnett um kevin garnett and paul pierce are exactly what i'm talking about yeah and two guys who sit around and fucking bitch and moan about basketball it's like this is your life and these players that are the next generation are going to be the reason that your legacies continue because basketball will still continue and you should probably give back to the game that gave you your entire life

and be supportive of the product and they just sit around and complain about it and it's a shame and i have i i understand the whole thing about all the the analytics have taken over it's in every sport right where it's like you're taking threes or you're in the paint and you're not taking jump shots from the outside oh they got better at the game right oh they discovered that this is the way you win well oh no that's like that's like people being mad about the the 80s lakers in showtime right like it's like oh they changed the way that the game is played well i hate it i i want to go back and i think you should put people on who like basketball yeah i think it's important to like your sport like you know how seldomly i turn on a hockey game i'm like this

is a hunk of crap yeah yeah yeah this is like there's always something special about it even if the the product that night isn't the greatest listen Craig Berube's coach the Leafs all season like I understand I understand but there's always a story there are always special moments and I've so rarely turned on a basketball game and been like this is a waste of my time and garbage like maybe you're just not interested in the team's playing yeah yeah and and and you know listen we're we've been accused of that from time to time too and it's because well we've never we have been highly critical of the nhl in certain instances and i think there are people sometimes there are people sometimes who are like hey uh you guys sure bitch a lot uh what's you know do you just

not like hockey and like listen i i think that that the difference for us has always been the game is itself is the best fucking game yes it's it was always best game run by worst our gripe is never with hockey like the gripe is always with the nhl and so with these guys their gripe is with the actual play yeah and it's not the all-star gameplay it's literally regular season play not like in the all-star format i think is different but it's that it's the current conversation that has led into hey also these guys just don't seem to enjoy the sport yeah like at all well and you know the thing is that's part of what happens when you get older too when you're less relevant is and Draymond's gonna discover this when he retires is like

hey man your your glory days are actually in the past and unless he might win a championship this year totally but you he's an active NBA player who's like the thing I do for a living stinks but if you have like unless you do what Shaq has done or and Barkley and those guys that have you know created something new and had a renaissance in their career a lot of guys leave the games that they're in and then get grouchy about it because the game leaves them behind because spotlights never last forever and once you're out of it you're out did you see the Dwight Howard stuff with Shaq or the most recent Stephen A Smith saying they should sign Dwight Howard no um like so Shaq just dumps on him at every opportunity oh okay and Dwight Howard was finally like do we

have to throw hands like enough like that's enough yeah like how long are you gonna do this yeah you know what like hey man neither of us play anymore like yeah what are you doing how is playing in mongolia oh okay great i'm kidding i mean he's not in the nba is yeah no no you know okay so you're gonna keep talking about do we have to fight yeah i mean this is the this is the thing right it's less about the game um let's get back to hockey for a sec here because i think it's you know this is a huge victory for the nhl and this is the first time i think on this entire podcast run and that goes back 13 years where we can say the nhl objectively put a better product uh not just in terms of what's on the ice but marketing and drama and stakes and everything

reception reception is crazy people liked it uh saturday night obviously you had the you had the double header you had finland sweden which was a i i you know i understand people have lives and families and it's hard to do uh but watching that finland sweden game was amazing and i and i i don't want to bury the lead i know canada us is the best game i get it the hockey play was insane but that finland sweden game for finland to get an overtime goal and win that game i wish we had a live camera at at one of the bars in in malmo or somewhere like that uh helsinki or whatever You know, I want to know what it looked like on the faces of the Finns. And, you know, we can't run it, but that radio call that's going around to that Finns broadcaster.

Awesome. Just spectacular stuff. And then you've got Canada, United States. In Montreal, there's the booing the national anthem thing. The prime minister is there. Kale McCarr is out. You know, you've got question marks and goaltending for Team Canada. I almost said Toronto.

uh and for both of them right jesse yeah yeah fraud watch fraud watch oh yeah yeah yeah no yeah usa needs to look out for their holes in that yeah exactly right swiss cheese that connor hellebuck that uh that fraud watch is the greatest thing you've ever it's so funny especially because it's the greatest goalie in the world right now i don't know hilarious we're on watch um and you know keeping our eye on the case for it essentially to be a one goal game until the last couple of minutes like i i look at the the canada usa game it was a 3-1 game but two of the usa goals were scored on a real net no you know and and and and frankly if you look at some of the advanced stats canada actually had more high dangerous scoring uh you know what i'm but they didn't

So what did you think of? Because Finland-Sweden was pretty well matched, I thought. Yeah. Canada-USA. It's a one goal game. So to me, I'd want to know, I would separate the numbers into two things. I would separate them into the first 40 minutes when the game was, well, I was going to say close.

It was close the whole time. The first 40 minutes that was played like a back and forth hockey game. Well, maybe not the first two. we'll get to that and then the third period where the states were happy to just give canada the puck over and over and over again no wonder canada had more shot attempts and shots on goal and scoring chances that the states just crawled into a shell for 20 minutes click just mashed harden and it worked out it worked out for them um canada looked like the better team for that period because the States just kept giving it to him.

Clear it. Kept giving it to him. Clear it. Kept giving it to him. Rushed the puck out this time. Ah, dump it. That was it. That was it.

Bennington came up big a couple times because Canada got caught because obviously they're cheating for offense. But that game, I thought the margins were razor thin. Yeah. Which means you got to stop that first goal. Yeah. From Jake Henson.

forget the because we don't know what it's like to be a player in that moment when you're steve in that moment what was it like well the first fight is is surprise but i won't say shock like i'll say surprise because i mean hegel was a surprise matthew kachuk was not even sort of a surprise and a lot of a lot of leaf fans are gonna hate what i'm about to say that's the captain the captain of the united states is matthew kachuk what are we doing stop it that's a ceremonial c wow matthew kachuk he led the charge of the three fights he had the first one that's the captain stop surprised but i was like you know what this is so charged and it's matthew kachuk i'm not

shocked that this is happening his dad did it it's kind of funny the moment kind of called for it let's go brady kachuk fights sam bennett i'm completely shocked completely shocked and miller looks like he wants to go too but then he doesn't the third fight happens like i know i'm watching something legendary we will always reference this game will never not talk about this game um that is a defining moment for every player involved my only regret is like Miller Pareko was third because like those guys might be forgotten a little because it wasn't off the opening face-off that's the biggest moment of brady kachuk's career name a bigger one i think that's the biggest game he's played in at the pro

level no question no question and that's not his fault and matthew kachuk like outside of playing in the stanley cup final with a broken sternum then winning it the next year in game seven yeah against the best player on the planet uh that's two players on the planet honestly he's the captain uh he does that off the opening draw dude I'm a Leafs fan I hate Brandon Hagel I hate him what a mouth I hate his face he's always talking he's always yapping and he's so good and he's on just a redonkulous contract and then seeing Brandon Hagel take on a bigger opponent and then angrily say, I'm not backing down.

a way bigger opponent and he does okay and right there it maybe wasn't for some reason the same affection that i had for brandon hagel in that moment uh i you know what was terrifying about that moment i'll i'll tell you like as a streamer as a as a reaction guy every game seven i've done man i've streamed a bunch too 2021 2022 uh 2023 and 2024 because the leafs always go to friggin yep or no 2023 was not right but it was a chance for the leafs to clinch um there's always a pressure to it i know people are watching but they're feeling the same pressure i do they want their team to win there's a finality to the game let's see what happens right this moment felt like and this might seem like a strange comparison uh two different moments

of my career um one you were there for Adam it it felt like my first stream with Sportsnet my first live game stream was game one against Montreal when John Tavares got knocked out and there were people behind the scenes that didn't want me to stream they thought streaming was a waste of the company's time didn't want to do it and well there's a reason they're not still doing it yeah they should they should still be doing it but they're, they're not, that's fine. They, I, I immediately, like there were thousands and thousands of people watching that game, but when Tavares went down and we don't know what's going to happen next. And it's obviously a very serious injury. And I have to tap dance now for like 20

minutes. I, I felt, uh, like I was, uh, I wasn't being watched for entertainment. I was being watch to be evaluated if that makes sense the other one was you and i going on the radio the day after oh yeah got traded to the raptors are we out of our depth or not we're gonna have these two hockey guys go on in the summer and it's whatever they're just filling in we're gonna have to talk about hockey and then yeah we're gonna no no it's tennis and golf season but we'll just let them talk about hockey that was the plan yeah and then it's like nope you're gonna talk about kawaii for three hours yep and again i just felt like i was being evaluated the moment of that game was bigger than the game and then a magical thing happened where the players met

the moment head on it's so special like i'm so i'm tearing up like i'm i'm it's so special and such a privilege to be involved in a moment like that like you pray to get one of those in your in your life like in your in your career to have something that you're like i i called that like i i was on camera for that i got to be a small part of that even though i wasn't in the building it wasn't even in the same province um that was unbelievable that was one of the most unbelievable moments of since i started making videos nearly 20 years ago so you loved it i fucking loved it i wish so bad canada won yeah but so i could remember it a little more funnily but you know that was unreal jesse what was your this is again because again we have to remember like

we understand that people have lives and stuff but for us this is we literally live and breathe this all the time because it's the job and and we're thrilled to do it did you wake up with any sort of anxiety or feelings or and the reason i'm asking you is because it's obvious that i did because of course i did you are of the three of us on this show the very the coolest and calmest and most together in moments like that okay how did you feel waking up and thinking about that game that night in terms of like going into the game yeah like are you feeling like as a fan are you feeling yeah you would you like you're rooting for them to win and everything the loss doesn't feel like the end of the world because there's thursday yeah but yeah going into that game

the reaching the moment part is i think the uh is the key there and what you said steve because yeah going in like what they did in the first nine seconds of the clock ticking away in those three fights everybody on the ice reached that moment you felt like yeah this is what my going into the game feeling was and now we're at that level and everything is equaling that and that's that was so cool to watch and and with with thursday now and seeing how saturday played out i i don't think you can be a hundred percent confident in canada's abilities on thursday because of how saturday started and the kachuk brothers and what you were talking about and how they are captains because like their their dad keith is the last person to fight in one of these

games hilarious the the 1996 world cup is the last time we had a canada versus usa brawl on international ice because the double ihf doesn't allow fighting you can't have fighting at the world cup that are sanctioned by them or the olympics so we had a world cup that replaced the canada cup in 1996 and keith kachuk in seven games played that tournament had 44 penalty minutes that's amazing and he birthed two kids who are as psycho as him i love it and they're the ones who were texting the group chat beforehand about this fight thing and they came out and and they spearheaded this moment obviously canada rose to that occasion and fought back and all that but like the start of that game made me worry about thursday where i was always confident canada was

gonna beat finland but that start i'm like okay are they able to match that energy in terms of the play on the ice now and in that game they weren't with with the shaky one from biddington when it's a one goal game essentially two one loss every goal matters and you have that that that goalie in net who allows the weak one early on and that stuff scares me so i have more anxiety leaving that game than i did have interesting yeah because no thursday thursday worries me because they everything well yeah everything's for team usa to win the johnny goudreau storyline yeah about how like this is for him like how can you not feel for the team in that respect the way that they have the guys who are it seems like they're able to reach the moment moment more

than the canadian guys currently even though like we got crosby you know but we've never seen it out mcdavid in these moments so we didn't i mean he's starting to show it though i mean and he did he did in the finals too it's great but i would need you to win yeah i need you to win so i have more anxiety about uh going up against a fraud maybe and connor hellebuck the rest of the american team going into this game that i do for saturday which makes sense because higher stakes sam bennett said today this is chris johnston uh i think messages were sent in the last game this game it's all about winning so i don't expect there's going to be huge fights off the top and i think anybody with a wow i could have told you that um but but to put a nice capstone on what we've been talking

about john cooper just said about 15 minutes ago nothing's done more for hockey in the last decade than what this tournament has done yep he's absolutely right correct and i think secondarily to that last spring stanley cup final yeah yeah i think connor mcdavid connor mcdavid and the florida panthers and you know and like i think and i think the preamble to that was the previous one between vegas and florida oh and sorry i would like to um there was something i vaguely remember us talking about and we were talking about the the stardom of certain players and we were talking about connor mcdavid and then i think you went oh and matthew kachuk he was in gq or whatever it was on people magazine people magazine and i was like adam uh take it back take it back he's

there now he's there the listen i don't want is anyone more american than matthew kachuk i mean no no single kid no single hockey player has ever been more of an american than matthew kachuk this is why like i don't want to i i hope people don't think i'm trying to insult austin matthews by calling kachuk the captain he is at minimum the emotional heartbeat absolutely of that team and one thing that i think it it's it's a little just brushstroke on on the first period that makes it so perfect that the group chat that we know exists were that that got jt miller to fight anyone he pick colton and the kachuks no no but miller being in there is is what makes it a masterpiece because it's not the kachuks fighting yeah it's the americans if it's just the kachuks

oh yeah bash brothers it's all of them it does make me question what the hell was going on in the flames dressing room when when matthew kachuk when they were like oh we just don't like that he gets into side stuff i'm like man you're right that dressing room sucks the the dumbest guy the dumbest decision by a locker room of guys to alienate that player stupid yeah so genuinely stupid set the flames back no question uh and and here's what brandon haggle had to say to chris about two minutes ago he said i was thinking to myself laying in bed the night before the first game you know if this is going to be an all-star type thing i'm going to be so out of place tomorrow because i'm literally gonna put my head through a window uh he said that was my mentality

and i mean that is that speaks to the intensity of and that was canada sweden guys that wasn't even canada oh states he's talking about that game um you know that kind of speaks to just how much this means and i know it means a lot in finland and sweden as well um and i know it means a lot to NHL players because you know you guys saw that you know David Pasternak was interviewed

during the USA Finland game and you know in a white t-shirt in a white he's just hanging out there in a white t-shirt he's got like 40 of them yeah

he said he hopes his teammates get hat tricks and I think it's gonna be a little hard for Swayman to get a hat trick yeah but Brad Marchand I wouldn't mind that

Late series. This tournament started at Game 5. Yeah. Right? In terms of the intensity of all the games and the officiating. So on Saturday, March the 1st, I am hosting what's called the Carly's Angels Legacy Gala. It's celebrating 10 years of the Carly's Angels Foundation

honoring Carly herself, Carly Allison. And this was put together by her family. Carly was diagnosed at, I think, 15, 16 years old with a very rare form of cancer, like one person in Canada had it and she was it. And basically, the family afterwards put together this foundation. And they are a pretty incredible family, the Allisons. but basically what they want to do is raise money for integrative cancer care and this is in partnership with sick kids and princess margaret cancer center both incredible organizations uh carly's angels also spreads carly's message always smile carly was known for her strength and positivity which she shared on her blog uh and obviously she had a netflix film made about her too called kiss and cry you could check it out you were in that right i was i was my voice was in it at the end yes okay um that counts that yeah that counts yeah that counts you make the
