you know if if anything if i've learned anything about a pandemic thank you jesse for that emoji
it's that it brings out the clown shoes and everyone including my coffee mug and uh and i
gotta tell you um what the score just posted like a couple seconds before we started the show
so they took a montreal canadians logo the c in it and then put number 19 jesse you're not able
to bring that up eh i'll insert in the video okay so right now people who are watching it'll be on
screen what and what now it says the captain did stay safe out there now the score has a voice
right that brand has a voice it's it's they got a little bit like a it's a little fun a little
snarky whatever they try they do they do yeah sometimes a little much but i'm trying to figure
out where they were going with that they're just well the logo is is a c you see oh uh yes and if
you if you put a 19 in the middle you see i don't i don't know that's that's the sort of thing
that's that seems like it doesn't get approved if it's got to go by more than one person
right yeah and i don't know yeah that seems like oh nobody's working and one dude's running the
social media and he's like this is funny right yeah and it's it sort of seems a little like
there's no possible way that yeah anybody normally on a normal day would have approved that but
they are getting ratioed pretty bad right now like to give you an idea it's been up for 24 minutes
there's 180 comments 15 retweets and 54 uh likes so so it's it's not looking good it's not looking
good but anyway i think they'll probably have that deleted by the time this podcast comes out
that would just be my guess i'm gonna screenshot it just in case okay oh great i'm sure they'll
love that oh yeah that's like uh oh my god that's closing in on a quadruple ratio yeah it's bad
uh-oh heart of tweeted at them now they're screwed everybody's on them man and i think
a little bit rightfully so it's sort of what the hell but yeah why i don't know like i can't even
it's one of those things where you know you see it you're like is that even offensive like i don't
know i just don't understand it you know it's not offensive to anyone it's just there's no reason
for it right it's just one of those yeah yeah and the internet's bored and they should know better
because once you get those ones that don't make sense and the internet's bored they're sitting at
home i have to say um you're in big trouble you are starting to yeah are you noticing people
getting snappier online yes yes i'm noticing people getting snappier in general and i can
be one of them um it's a yeah yeah all right in all honesty tough guy it's like it's it's funny
it's it's just i think well for the first week off of hockey twitter and i mean you know steve
you pay a lot more attention to this than i do so uh correct me if i'm wrong on this one but i
haven't seen the venom that we normally get this time of year going into the playoffs where it gets
like it becomes goes from fun to nasty uh i haven't seen a lot of that between like the sniping
between hockey teams because there's really nothing to say uh which was kind of a refreshing
thing right it's nice to have that the other side of that is that there's a billion other things to
get mad about and i was i think i tweeted today about like how i was really excited that the
canadian government was going to hook people up with some money uh for yeah we've been laid off
and they're like and then i got oh yeah well and like and then and then it devolved somehow into
how is the liquor store an essential service well how's the liquor store an essential service
yes they were very upset about that dependency on alcohol is a crazy thing yes you know that's
the thing right you you can't if you here's the thing the idea to keep is to keep people out of
hospital and if it's not a fun subject but if you have someone who's dependent on alcohol and they
can't get it guess what they're doing it they're buying it off a black market or they're ending up
in hospital with seizures or things that of that nature that can happen with alcohol withdrawal
especially when it's severe yeah you gotta keep that open and imagine what the 24 hours before
the liquor store closed would be it would be it would be crazy it was the pandemonium yeah that's
that's been a heavily criticized thing is the the stores and whatever just reducing their hours but
all that does is it just creates a shorter window for people to be in there so they pack in the
place and now like that's becoming a thing of the past everyone's just staying home because
everything's closed yeah the uh the grocery stores and like all the shops that are open in like my
area i know and like most of downtown they're pretty much empty like i went after we did a we
did a morning show at adam's house this morning we self-isolated each other and did the radio show
and then i walked uh i walked home and i went into like a long goes and there was like
five people in there stopped by shoppers to get some stuff two people in there no one's even
leaving their house anymore they have all their stuff there's nowhere to go there's a grocery
store in in oshawa that i've been to that where an employee tested positive uh for it so it's uh
it's freaky man it's freaky i i had a couple people tweet me because it was in the news they're
like is this the grocery store you went to that you were talking about on the last show and i'm
like no no but we are uh uh we're not that click and collect thing where you order your groceries
online and they bring them out to your car the problem is everyone's doing that now it's not
just a convenience thing so our like we're predicting what we're going to be out of next
week because uh they're taking reservations into the next week yeah well that's that's what we do
downtown i i did that by the way before because i thought it was great because i hate wasting time
in grocery stores i hate grocery shopping yeah yeah you did you did that regularly just because
that's how you live your life yeah man it's so stupid like why do i have to walk around a grocery
store and pick stuff when i can pay like 10 extra bucks and have someone else do it for me and i can
take that time and do something productive with that time that's how i look at it now some people
are like i love grocery shopping i want to do something with that yeah and that's cool man do
that that's great that's your thing i don't mind it it's standard so i'm in and out but i mind it
now yeah well it makes it makes like it takes like now several days to get an appointment
someplace is seven days but the maple leaf garden one which is where i shop is not that actually
it's not that bad it's because it's i think it's because it's enormous it's a former hockey range
so it's uh part ryerson gym part ryerson hockey arena part grocery store part office space it's
massive basketball court yeah sure yeah and i think they put center ice um like the actual
leaf center ice is in the tuna aisle which is hilarious because then you can take the tuna
cans and you can people do drop them there which is kind of neat i thought that was kind of i hope
actually buys tuna they just wreck it drop it we should go there and do that one day we should we
should we should drop some tuna cans now the thing is the cans don't burst because they're made of
in so they're good tough wow but they're a little bit beaten up now ontario as we we've got 100 new
cases as of today um and only in well not only but listen we've got an additional there's an
additional uh fatality unfortunately uh that's give nine which is nine total but they're not
that we're going to be out of the woods on this one soon but at least in in our neck of the woods
it seems to be and we'll see because this is the week where it's supposed to get really really bad
it seems to be flattening now that doesn't mean that we're going to be back to work next week
it means that we're going to be back to work in a couple months no it means we need to keep on
what we're doing yeah yeah friggin let up for no easter egg hunt you maniac but um uh what was
oh so something that made me feel better about all this is a key bit of information and i hadn't
looked at it this way so what what was it adam 100 new cases 100 new cases today bringing it to
671 active cases and eight resolved cases right like that sounds horrible right you know it's it's
not that big of a number but then it went up 100 so it's going up by percentages but positive tests
are actually kind of a good thing because they mean there's tests being done right the the problem
with before the the virus is where it is whether you test for it or not right there are as many
cases as there are and that's the reality but the the fact that it's actually being uh like tests
are actually being done is a very good sign actually it's not it's never good that anyone
has it but the fact that we know people have it means we're actually testing which is good yes
100 100 so hey we're uh we're all in this together uh shout out to anybody from new york state who
are going through a really rough time right now um i got a friend in spain who you know has been
sequestered for a long long time spain's having a really rough go he's still there eh oh yeah he's
there and he'll be there for they're not moving like there's nothing going on in spain um this
friend's working they're not on vacation well yeah they they live there so it's a it's a shame
um but uh you know it's a shame for everybody so you know we're going to try to keep having a good
time by the way i want to thank everybody for the uh all the crowns that you guys delivered
in the comment section and i'd like to keep that going if it's possible you know if if you've got
someone in your life that you think uh deserves a shout out right now and i'm going to read you
guys a message in a second and this is what i'm talking about this is the kind of stuff i was
talking about it on the radio the other day and i'm not sure if i did a good job explaining it but
but one thing that i have that i've noticed is that at least for for now temporarily it seems
like society a little bit has got their priorities straighter than normal you know normally we'd be
worshiping celebrities and and you know sports stars whatever else which is you know that's
entertainment that's fine whatever you do what you want to do but it seems like right now we've
got the opportunity and we are thanking people that we never thanked before like you know i
understand there are times where people doctors and nurses get thanked sometimes rarely definitely
not enough but when have you ever heard anybody thank a grocery clerk yeah ever like ever and
they're like because it's like oh it's just some pimply teenager like working for minimum wage and
and when have you ever heard someone thank a truck driver for delivering supplies it's like oh he's
just driving that big truck and he drives like a jerk and he's getting in my way uh when have you
heard somebody thank anybody in waste management uh or even you know thank local vets for staying
open because pets are still pets a big one i'm saying too is just like um like amazon stock
workers yes people are just packing boxes putting things in boxes like anybody who works at a
packing facility like those you never think about that like people who drove packed the groceries
into a truck and drove them to the actual grocery store yeah yeah two two things there uh so last
night uh mrs dangle was in the car for two hours because uh charlie was having some
butthole problems because he's an old dog and but they were very bad i must be an old dog too
yeah but when you when you do it on someone's lawn you get arrested i know
it's illegal oh whatever man no but she had to wait um for two hours in the parking lot of the
uh uh emerge uh vet because they come out to you they come get the dog they bring it inside and
that like you don't go in at all it was like a backed up drive-through full of sick pets
so there was that this one so you know oh amazon and it's easy to look at a worker
like the logo which they're very very not be extra nice to your couriers and stay the hell
away from them because i got a message from a courier they did 161 stops yesterday
wow in eight hours in eight hours so that is per hour that's that's a lot i'm not even gonna try
almost almost all of them were uh were houses just don't order crap that you don't need to
don't order crap he said the one the one this guy was he's like so many people are ordering shoes
yeah and i'm just like where are you going with these shoes where are you going you wearing them
in the house no you're not it's canada what are you doing he did 20 deliveries an hour yep or
uh one delivery every three minutes wow i believe it that's a lot
that's a crazy day we're getting a great look at um you know who makes society run
it's fun yeah you know working working in sports media you know we always call it the toy store
but there's always this little part of me that's like if the apocalypse ever happens i'll have
nothing to contribute. And I'm feeling that way right now. I'm definitely feeling that way a
little bit. What would I contribute? Could I sell any of these things for food? Perhaps. I don't
know. I bought this for $60. Could I get $60 worth of food, please? Don't think so. Don't know about
that. Yeah, no, it's funny. That's what brings me to this because I actually do have a comment I
want to read. And I think this comment's brilliant. So this comes from, hey, Adam,
this is just from my DMs, which I did not close. And I'm actually grateful now that I didn't close
because I'm getting so many great DMs these days. Hey, Adam, I work in trucking and logistics with
Amazon. And I actually manage some of the US-Canada border crossing routes. Thank you for
giving a shout out to truckers, which I believe we did on the last show. These guys are definitely
true heroes. Every day, they show up to pull thousands of pounds of cargo across states or
countries or provincial lines. They work long hours with little thanks for getting us our
toilet paper and our hand sanitizer and anything else we need. Furthermore, some states, and I'm
assuming, I think this is the case in Ontario as well, have shut down a lot of the rest spots
due to coronavirus. And that makes their jobs much more difficult. Because remember, the rest
stops are more than just food. Like for us, it's like, oh, I'm going to stop at McDonald's. For
them, it's like, I need to go to the bathroom and take a shower because I've been on the road for
seven days and and maybe have a sleep um and so a lot of the time it's it's making them extremely
difficult they've got nowhere to go for food and then connected to that the amazon and post office
delivery folks deserve a huge thank you for bringing essential goods right to our doors so
we don't have to go to the store and getting them consider this is i love this consider leaving a
bottle of water or soda and or a snack out for your delivery driver if you can just in a small
way to say thank you which i thought was so cool what a great idea um and beyond that yeah first
off disinfect it please yeah i'm gonna be that guy and be like yeah maybe yeah but i think that
leaves some lysol wipes next to it yeah yeah there you go or just leave them a thing of lysol wipes
but all all the same like it's it's so um it is for just a millisecond of time we're actually
realizing the people that actually make the society run and that was my initial point is that
it's that we are actually getting down to, oh, what really does matter here? What is an essential
service and who's providing it? And isn't it funny that the people that are providing the essential
services in a lot of cases are barely getting paid, you know, living wages for them. So I just
think it's, it's amazing. I think everybody needs to deserve, deserves these shout outs. And if you've
got someone in your life, and we saw so many on the last episode, but I'd like to keep them going
and keep those comments coming in the comment section. Cause it was so, I woke up Monday
morning and it was a little grumpy and you know hadn't slept great and i look at our i i logged
on to the the youtube channel before the radio show and just have a look at how things had gone
and the comment section was so amazing um that i i just want to keep that going for the you know as
long as we can because a lot of the times it can you know be like any comment other comments that
can be brutal and uh it's it was nice to see kind of a change of pace you know what i'm saying
yeah did you want one i'd like to add in that i saw a little bit and we actually mentioned on the
morning show as well was the people who are just working on the internet the actual people who come
to your house and work on your cable or your internet just the technicians yeah they're going
hard right now for all the people who are at home using all of this data so yeah shout out them as
well steve anybody you want to shout out or are you good oh i mean yeah well i wanted i wanted to
get out the couriers again but just uh anybody who's uh who understands that this is an us thing
and not a you thing you know what i mean and adam like i mean for you know you were tweeting about
you know you're happy to pay taxes and everything but i just want to let you know that you're a
cuck for thinking so oh well i am happy to pay taxes i believe in paying taxes for civil services
and disaster relief like we're in right now i know it's crazy that's wesley snipes who didn't
pay taxes for like a decade or something yes let me look he doesn't believe in it let me look that
yeah yeah yeah he like didn't believe in taxes like you just don't have to pay though so then
he did it and then got arrested because you because you do have to all right all right
hang on hang on there's gotta be like a wikipedia and there is page there is um steve you wanted to
continue and then i'll read you wesley snipes i did did you want to continue or no no i just
just anyone who understands that this is a uh and us thing and there's an opportunity out there for
you to help people you know obviously by staying in but um by doing so much else and if you have
a few spare uh shekels you know obviously uh find a worthy cause and and donate some why don't you
um and because this this is going to last long beyond this quarantine right i've been making
an effort to extra tip on everything yes whenever i do uber eats it's now the hit the 20 20 whatever
percent make sure you do that on uber drivers uber eats whenever you get takeout and do what's
affordable to you too yeah right like if you can afford it that's important as well but are you
still doing that okay i i we haven't ordered out once and i'm i'm dying to it's one of my favorite
things but no there's so many um local spots because i live downtown so there's so many
restaurants that are just shut down and only doing takeout so uber eats is super easy right now so
i'm making sure to support them because they're not getting as much business so takeout's been
booming right now they're they're not charging fees and especially for local restaurants down
here which you know rent is super high um they're like a they're like a month away from closing a
lot of them said we got six weeks that's all we got so six weeks and we're done and they're like
probably two weeks into the six weeks or a week into the six weeks it's like i said last episode
you know although it was applying to uh i think it was more like nhl based logic but like you
can't just have swaths of companies freaking out of business at the end of this like you can
i know you can but you can't just kick i don't know i don't know i'm just it's i don't know
none of us have ever lived anything like this right so it's hard for me to picture right well
and when you when you look at um and i i've only read bits and pieces on this and there are
economists constantly in my dms weirdly i have like a lot of economists that'll message me after
we talk about finances but one of the issues with with um uh with the the the original you know kind
of Great Depression in the in the late 20s was that they had a technological failure. So they're
there, they actually like the system stopped working, and you'd have to look into a little
bit more, maybe I can get it ready for next episode about what actually happened, but they
couldn't trade. And so, you know, it lost confidence. And really, it rebounded for the
rest of the year after that. So everybody talks about the crash of 29 being the start of something,
things didn't get really bad until about 1931 and so the reason that you know of course yeah 1931
well i'm just saying because then the 30s were all the great depression years but i always reason
that like in 2008 they had these huge stimulus packages and you're seeing that now in the states
and canada and all over the world these huge injections of cash of public money in is to avoid
those businesses because if the businesses go down then the landlords lose their tenants like i said
And the landlords can't pay their rent, which means that the banks lose their things, which means the bank's default because that's the money that they, you know, they have to repossess whatever it is. And then there's no point in repossessing it because it's useless because nobody can buy it. So it's a, it's a really, yeah. So that's why there's going to be a lot of stimulus. And I think that's a good thing because, and as much as we can, like I said before, I think I said this a couple episodes ago, you know, patronize your local businesses as much as you can.
And that's why we did order out, we ordered out on Saturday too, because you just, you know,
we have to be careful with our money as well. But I just feel like it's sort of a,
it's an important thing if you can afford it. Yeah, I think that if you can, I didn't stress,
but thank you for adding that. Well, I don't know why I have to add that. But for some reason,
I've been conditioned with the internet, that if you miss one little subtle nuance,
you're going to hear about it. But what about the people who can't afford it?
What about the people who can't afford it? Well, you would think it would just be like,
well don't like we're not shaming you but but anyway sorry steve you look upset well no no i'm
just i was just look like like jesse and i's conversation bugged you do we do something
well you know it's really insensitive of you to talk about food when you haven't really you
haven't even taken into account the dead people can't eat well we're just excluding people from
this entire conversation we're just excluding all the dead people ever wow really wow all right
adam you know we see you tammy lauren said something wow adam was over partying did you
agree with tammy lauren said today dude today or yesterday which one yesterday sorry yeah or the
guy that was like you know if it became it was between old people dying in the economy i'd
probably die yeah well the thing about the thing about them is that they're just doing it for the
likes and the retweets they're not actually they're not policy makers they don't matter
and yeah they got a bunch of people that follow them but um if like i'll be honest with you um
you know if if millions of people are to go that's in a pragmatic sense and this is the most
vicious way i could put this don't say it great way to lose an election we'll put it that way
millions of people dying usually not going to win an election just throwing that out there so
i think that they're going to ultimately as stubborn as the americans can be sometimes
certain americans uh i think they're going to do the right thing in the end i have hope and i have
faith call me an optimist that i will or an optometrist whatever you prefer now i wouldn't
call you an optometrist adam because i don't think you see the problem here you see because
i see what he did there yeah now i i want to ask you guys something
is it is it hard for you being the presence of greatness
oh generally yes yeah it is now especially
now especially because i mean i don't know if i've told you this yet but i'm
pretty awesome i'm usually never wrong and i can see
the future now really last episode we were talking
about what we were talking about hockey wise what we're talking about like what was the
robertson and the draft and how you find nhl like what we're talking about the nhl we're talking
about financial stuff right yeah we're talking about salary cap so didn't my messages and dms
fill up with people going next year might be the year where they have to institute the luxury tax
boom because that's the way around it let the rich team spend let the let the other teams get
supported by the rich team spending they're gonna have to do something profoundly different
well there's it seems it seems like it's like uh a it seems like luke fox uh put up an article
about the 11 most you know if there were buyouts if there were compliance buyouts these are the
11 candidates that you would see probably right away maybe um and i'll go through that list in
just a second but we actually had somebody on my dms that i think you would find i think you'd find
this fascinating. So while a bunch of people were saying luxury tax and I was beating my chest and
being really proud, this person had an even better idea. Okay. They said, what if you lowered the
floor? So, okay. So the cap remains the same, which I don't know how you still, I still don't
know how you do that because it's supposed to be a 50, 50 player on a revenue share. So that's what
it's based on. You can't really freeze it there. It has to go down, but let's say it does for
argument's sake, stay the same. If your salary cap is $81.5 million and your floor is whatever
it was, $60 million or something like that, if you made that floor $50 million or $40 million,
there could be a lot of teams that could potentially either shed salary or take on
contracts that they wouldn't normally have to take on. I don't know. It was a fascinating idea.
I haven't really fully fleshed it out yet. Again, we have really educated people that
listen to this show who could do a lot more with that than I could. But I think it's a really
fascinating idea because if you're forcing teams that don't have the money to spend to a degree
that they can't afford, then you're forcing them out of the league, right? And that's what the
salary cap is there to prevent along with revenue sharing. So if you lower that, then it gives them
the opportunity to make it through this hump because, you know, we're having a, there's going
to be an NHL financial flatten the curve thing, but it's not going to be, it's not going to be
it up it's going to be a down they're going to have to make it through a valley so what are they
going to do guys it's just all so weird it's all so strange mind-bending right the the one i saw
today was uh uh nhl owners have been asked to look into playing in august like how how and for
what purpose like to finish the 2020 season i don't think you can finish see i think if you're
gonna do the playoffs you do the playoffs right but i don't think you finish the regular season
right i think you just say sorry points percentage that's what it is what are you gonna play 10 more
games each team no i think i think that makes sense where you get whoever's played the maximum
amount of game let's say a team's played 76 games then you get everybody to 76 or something like
that that's playing like maybe 10 5 extra games for everybody or something i don't know i think
well let me have a look i'm gonna look on nhl.com right now let's have a look to not move too far
away from your salary cap idea i think um it's got to be whatever way you make it out so that
we get back to some sort of even number right right whether that's team spending less or the
rich team spending more i don't know what that is well and you know because the rich teams the
rich team spending more wouldn't affect the the not so rich teams i don't want to call them poor
teams that's wrong yeah but wouldn't affect the not so rich teams until the next season because
it's all about the equalization payments and you need you need the rich teams to spend first before
you can get those equalization payments at what price no longer the 2019 2020 season though we'll
reach that point they'll turn over the calendar eventually we can't resume the season in august
after it's paused at the beginning of March?
It could.
I don't see why not.
It's done!
It's done!
Steve, you also, oh, we can't tell everybody
to not go to their jobs and stay inside for a month.
You know, we're in unprecedented territories.
Anything can happen here.
MLB today, Rob Manfred came out and he told the owners
we might play the World Series on Christmas.
Whoa.
We might push back the season.
we play 162 games double headers in there all the time so we fit it in and world series happens on
like christmas day dude that would be so sick right everything is on the table yo pretty sick
too like yeah i i know i know you know from a sports media standpoint it's we're all just
sitting here going what the what do we do what's what's gonna happen to us we're worried about our
jobs and everything on the other side of this like let's say it's over and dealt with by
hopefully august or before but let's throw the let's throw august out there
the nhl comes back the nba comes back football comes back baseball is going to go to bloody
christmas uh and uh sports like uh the nhl and the nba have half a mind to continue
the 1920 season before beginning the next one we're gonna don't think they want to have to
it's gonna be the richest at least three months of sports possibly in the world that'd be awesome
you know it's going to be incredible and someone um i saw brendan shob also like um ufc fighter
brendan shop retired ufc fighter now commentator for anybody doesn't know yeah and he was talking
about he was talking about all these cards that have gotten canceled well all the cards that come
after that are just going to be super cards it's all going to be the two headlining fights
crammed into you're going to take the the the two best fights from i don't know three shows that
were canceled and all of a sudden like everything's a title fight and they're going to be back to back
weekends you know yeah maybe like a month straight yep well and and then to add to that and just to
take it outside of sports for a second same thing is going to happen with movies like they've delayed
wonder woman till august we'll see about that they delayed james bond till november it which is also
a high point movie season right there's a lot of movies coming out there and then fast and furious
they waited till they're waiting till 2021 and then in concerts every i think zach brown band
and dual leaf are the two right now that are the two major concert series that were canceled although
everybody's been canceled camila cabello yep yep and there's and so what's interesting steve is
they're rescheduling these for 2021 already and they're already speculating that a lot of the
cities that they were going to go to they can't go to because of so much there's so many sports
and so many concerts that were canceled last year that if you had a show say like i know
having issues in like i think a city in denmark she can't redo her i don't i don't think she can
do her copenhagen show because there's just no room you're not going to be able to get the
scotia bank arena from august until december if there are leafs and rappers games to play
it's going to be it's i i i hate to tease with this sort of thing but once we're allowed to go
out yeah there will be no shortage of things to do right there will be a shortage of money to spend
there might be that i would assume i don't know it's it's amazing because we you know some people
who uh i shouldn't say people who depend on capitalism i feel like that's maybe most people
but we we have the crazy end of it which is uh what if old people just died you know i mean
which is messed up yeah old people are dead retweet like comment subscribe
yeah also follow my tiktok because they've taken over that too um but uh at the end of this
all those people who are freaking out about losing money right now are going to be like
trying to get you out of your house like as much as possible the second this is all done come see
a leaf game raptors game we're gonna have a double header where we have the raptors play in the
afternoon and the leafs play at night we're gonna i don't know who knows like we're gonna have all
sorts of stuff come to this restaurant that restaurant it's gonna be amazing whenever the
hell that is let me pour some water on that for just a second oh no i don't love you guys now
what now what now what there has been and i got a couple dms about this on twitter and i i think
it's a question i the the way it was phrased to me on direct message was this is a fact and i don't
know that it is a fact although because i'm not a public health professional so how would i know
but there is a question of if we're not going to have a vaccine for this covid thing until you know
like 12 months from now 18 months from now that's what they're saying you know once it goes through
all the tests and stuff although something tells me they're going to fast track the hell out of it
uh next january ish that's what they're saying timeline yeah so even if it's upcoming like this
upcoming january based on when they started versus whatever yeah so let's say let's say
for argument's sake it's january can you responsibly allow 20 000 people in one space
if you don't have a vaccine for this even if even if the curve's been flattened because remember
you flatten the curve but that doesn't mean that all the people that didn't get it have
all of a sudden developed an immunity to it it means that it's still just as vicious as ever
don't say it hadn't occurred to me so that it hadn't occurred to me either so the question is
because mark mark cuban came out and said we'd like to be playing nba games by the middle of
may well that's nice and mark cuban is a bombastic guy however if they were to play in empty arenas
there's an argument to be made that maybe they could responsibly say that if players signed
waivers and etc but you can't responsibly put 18 000 people in there with them four weeks from now
right right exactly which is sorry eight weeks from now whatever yeah it doesn't matter all the
same like and actually by the way may is only five weeks away so it's not that far but we may
have this enormous amount of sports all happen at once and entertainment and all these things
we may not be able to attend it so we may get hockey in july august we may get basketball
football will probably start on time baseball might be played right up until christmas
but can you imagine a world series on christmas day where no one's allowed in the door
imagine the the the bruins win the cup because they have to why not um and and brad marchand
is skating around an empty rink holding the cup above his head well i don't think anything would
make him happier i think he would love it i feel like wouldn't he love that he probably would love
that and probably have to mic him up just to hear what he says he would oh you know brad
marshand wants that picture of him at center ice holding the cup above his head but it's a wide
shot and and just with the caption me with all my fans man steve i think he might steal that
and use that and i hope he does you feel free bradley feel free so that's but that's what we're
looking at you know i i don't i don't mean to be a downer but think about you know i mean sure you
can put people back to work i guess i mean if you're allowing them back on the subway what's
the difference of an arena and subway and stuff like that but i don't know what the right answer
there again i don't work in public health but it sure seems to me like it would be awfully risky
for an organization because remember their number one thing is not to get sued it'd be awfully risky
for an organization that doesn't want to get sued to have 18 000 people in there and go let's just
see what happens yeah here's just the big old petri dish of nonsense yeah and well football
stadiums are 50 000 people a lot of baseball stadiums are 50 000 people 70 yeah yeah so
what almost 100 000 where's that michigan uh cowboy stadium cowboys cowboys yeah that was
cowboys jerry jones's dome yep yep so and it makes me wonder so tom brady has just signed
with the Bucs. Super Bowl's in Tampa Bay this year. I am going to try to go. Really? I think
so. Yeah, well, at least try to go for the tailgate. Have you ever been? No, I've never
been to a Super Bowl. No, I don't know if I could afford the tickets apparently are outrageously
expensive. So I don't know if I can afford that. But I think I like my parents are nearby. And
it's in mid February. So I could I'm allowed to take time off work at that point. So it'd be nice
to get fly down there for a weekend and just be like, hey, I was around. But think about this.
Think about this.
Let's say the conservative estimates of 18 months
are what turns out to be what happens.
So Tampa Bay gets the Super Bowl, no tailgate, nobody in the stadium.
And I'm not saying Brady's in the Super Bowl,
but imagine they've got to go down and fly down to Tampa,
play the Super Bowl, nobody's there.
What's the breaking point for we need to start making money again?
well and that's where that's what that's what that's what trump and those guys were saying
yesterday is like we our economy was not meant to shut down and they're right it isn't um but i
think you have to find different ways to make money i i listen no i'm there oh i guess we'll
just die then no i listen i guess we'll just die i'm not defending it no i'm just saying
the world economy wasn't meant to it's up here get at a certain point uh actually mr virus
we weren't meant to stop doing what we're doing with the hey hey i know that there's a fire in
the kitchen but this fish and chip shop wasn't meant to shut down we're just gonna keep making
things until we all burn to death well here's where here's what i love all right i didn't design
it how about this one the best tweet i thought i saw from yesterday and i hate getting into this
stuff because it always makes people mad but yeah let's not go too deep but here's a radical thought
after 15 days of flattering flattening the curve how about the elderly vulnerable and those with
underlying medical conditions stay home while the rest of the country gets back to work
that's just my favorite tweet who's that from that's tommy lord but i just the reason i say
it is that it's at a certain point at a certain point people do have to go back to work
but it's got to be when everyone can do that kind of healthy and the curve has been flattened right
the hospitals won't be overrun that's what bingo what the hospital the hospital when they're good
i hadn't even thought of that and this whole time i thought we were doing this for nothing
gosh when you put a reason behind it jesse i suppose i can support it anyway oh my god so
So I just want you to be prepared.
We may see sports back in July and August, maybe.
But we may see empty stadiums.
And we may see empty stadiums for six, seven, eight months, even more.
And I think that that, like, again, I think, you know, when we, 20 years from now,
we're still going to remember where we were and how we handled all these situations.
And I'm excited for the memes because I think they're going to be hilarious.
But there is, this is going to be, the rest of this year, it's just going to be wacky.
So wacky.
And I hope everybody's prepared for it because if you thought the last few years weren't normal,
this is going to be a whole nother level. And I don't think we're going to know what normal
feels like after all this is over. It's going to be weird. It's crazy. It's crazy to think.
Yeah. It feels like a change, like a significant historical moment in like, hey, we're just all
running along this society. We think we know how it works. And then all of a sudden this one big
thing comes by and we don't know how everything's going to be in the future.
Totally. Yeah. Yeah. Now back to the cap for a second, Luke Fox, who, despite all of what's
going on right now is putting a banger content has put together a list of 11 potential buyout
candidates, assuming, and he said, this is purely hypothetical, assuming that, um, uh, compliance
buyouts become a thing. Now what's interesting about the previous compliance buyout system from
the last lockout um was that if you were bought out if if steve dangle was making way too much
money to play for the edmonton oilers didn't matter how much of a fan he was like how many
fans he had in edmonton he could not re-sign with edmonton in that calendar year so if he was bought
out july 1st he could not re-sign there till july 1st the next year so that prevented rich team from
saying hey we'll pay you all this money now and sign us sign back for league men and we're good
to go part of me wonders if that will change on this one if you're going to do compliance buyouts
for teams and there are players that have to get bought out that are highly skilled and would
destroy the trajectory of many teams not just the leafs um you have to think that there are going to
be people who go uh yeah no we need to be able to re-sign our guys well and so i wonder about this
you know who would have been a perfect candidate for something like that is patrick marlo yeah
yeah you know what i mean maybe yeah yeah maybe um yeah he's the the conversation we always have
about him is do we hate him if he makes league men no i don't know we might get annoyed but i
i don't think we hate him no people still really don't like i wouldn't i wouldn't even have hated
him if he made a couple million bucks like whatever pushing it you're pushing it all right
9.25 or nothing.
9.25 or nothing.
But the reason I bring this up, guys, because this is what's really interesting.
I want you to imagine a New York Rangers team without Henrik Lundqvist
or a New York Rangers team that has to buy out Henrik Lundqvist
to get under the cap, whatever the cap is,
and then they're not able to re-sign him.
They want him to finish.
They had the chance to trade him.
He had the chance to go.
Neither side even explored it.
but now if you're going to cut an asset on the new york rangers henrik lundqvist has to be that
asset this this was a an underrated storyline leading up to the postponement of the season
the rangers were so hot they were one of the most fun teams to watch in the whole nhl
surrounded by stories like they were already doing okay in a bid to make the playoffs they
It looked unlikely that they would finally do it,
but they were doing well.
Then we forget, on the trade deadline,
it was announced that two Rangers players were in a car accident.
Yes.
Pavel Buchnevich, I want to say he missed a game at least.
And Igor Shishorkin, who, if he had started playing games earlier in the season,
who knows, he might even be in the Calder conversation.
Some people would probably argue that he didn't.
should be anyway he was out for the rangers because of that car accident but they kept
winning games they kept making up uh ground in the standings make his advantage ad has that
five goal game that's capped off in overtime i i can't remember where i was going with this
i just started talking about the rangers it's a fair it's a fair assessment and you know that
i'm looking at oh sorry right now i just remembered so but out of all those good stories
one thing was that Lundqvist
for at least a brief while
was a healthy scratch.
Like he was just relegated
to the press box, which
it's basically
because they don't have to do that.
They can have him as a backup.
It doesn't matter if it's Sushorkin and
Nett and Georgiev backing up. Why not just have
Sushorkin and Nett and Lundqvist
backing up and then the next game you can
have Georgiev start if you really want to have
Sushorkin watching.
but the rangers were already sort of beginning to push lungquist out right do you push henrik
lungquist out without his permission well that's that's what you got to do right right you you just
he will not leave the new york rangers he does not want to then you you got to make it so that
he wants to right and that's that's the question i have though is that like if that's the case
if he's doing if they're doing that have they had the conversation with like henrik
it's time to hang him up at the end of the year we can't keep doing this or if you're the rangers
and you have i mean you're the most valuable team in the league do you look at henrik lundqvist and
go okay at 38 years old one can assume that you can find an injury that would put him on ltir for
year because you can't he been one of the most like healthy goalies like over over his career
well maybe this injury has contributed to his decline wow i think i mean listen i think there's
a problem there's a problem telling an athlete that he can't play anymore when he still wants
to play i think we see it with we've seen it with tom brady we see it with patrick marlow we see it
with joe thornton you can't tell a guy hey go away when he still wants to be out on the ice
well and the the easiest guy to you know give the joffrey loophole treatment to would have been
roberto luongo if they said oh yeah he's he's got he's got a career-ending injury he can't play
anymore i i'd have believed it but they just i guess someone put their foot down and they were
like no no you got to retire you got to deal with the consequences too bad i was wondering about
that because i know that the the panthers because that seemed like the right idea and the panthers
ownership from what we knew i mean we talked to doug sifu years ago they had money they had books
written about how much money they had and then at the end of the season with vinnie trotschek being
traded um it seemed like they had to slash payroll chris johnston i believe reported they were going
to slash like 10 million bucks of payroll yeah there was a directive to slash 10 million dollars
which is exactly what they signed, uh, for. Right now. Isn't it interesting that I find it
interesting anyway, that, um, that you would have a situation like that in the first place.
But I think when you look at, I guess when I forget where I was going with the Panthers,
I had something, but with, with Lundquist back to him for a second, when you with Luongo,
you would have thought, sorry, this is where I was going to go. Luongo, you would have thought
with all the money that they had just like just just put him on ltir and they made it seem like
oh no no no he wanted to do the right thing and retire i wonder if they just said well do this
or we'll we'll like what because luongo to me had to make that decision to retire because if they
put him on ltir and they had to pay him out um that would have been his choice right if you keep
showing up there's nothing that they can really do correct i mean is there anything much like they
could buy him out but even then like what does that get you so he must have tried to he must
have done that and that affects two teams pretty badly especially the Vancouver Canucks with the
capture um with with Bobrovsky who by the way makes a uh who um Luke makes Luke's Luke Fox's
list as well you know one of the arguments that he makes yeah crazy right crazy but let me let
me read this to you because I think it's really sort of uh a fascinating look buying out the
remaining six and he puts an exclamation mark in brackets years of brobroski's mega deal would save
the cash conscious rangers 11 million bucks uh over the course of the payments more important
it could correct 2019's free agency wrong no goalie not even a two-time vesna champ should
eat up an eight-figure chunk of his team's salary in this era the position is too unpredictable and
too injury and slump prone and the cap space is too valuable that brobroski's 1920 record
and save percentage was 23 19 and 6 with a 900 pilled uh pilled next to uh his recent backup
is it chris how do you how did you pronounce chris chris dreiger dreiger yeah who had a 7 2
and 1 record with a 938 save percentage has underscored the danger of betting big on this
position um so you could see longquist and borovsky gone right away and i would think that
you would uh which makes things interesting for teams that don't necessarily have goalies but
Have a listen to some of the other people that could be bought out.
So the first name on this list is Louis Erickson.
He's still got two more years at $6 million.
Oh, my God.
So this could bail Jim Benning out of one of the worst contracts he's ever signed.
And when he signed in Vancouver, he had scored 30 goals and 63 points the previous year in Boston.
And I believe since signing, he's only had, in the last three years, 30-plus goals.
As in, like, all total.
oh my god like 10 goals a year bad yeah oh boy his uh his time with the canucks 11 10 11 6
okay so it's not even at 40 goals yet yeah uh just an applicator still has three years at 4.25 left
and he's 36 oh my god what was that deal about that you know what at the time i don't we never
really blinked at that but that was that's a crazy deal that is man that guy's got a career
oh never mind so he has a career high 23 goals i wouldn't be surprised if that was the year he
signed it uh 19 the year after and then 7 13 6 yo this year oh this year just an applicator in 49
games had zero goals and three assists what you have three points and how much is he making 4.25
it's a rough deal oh my never complain about a contract for your team ever again ever again
well you remember the leafs a couple years ago apparently babcock was pushing in lose last year
was pushing him hard to get abdicator i do remember that and then glenn denning oh was it
glenn denning also bad but i thought i heard i thought it was abdicator uh but i thought they
had to the the detroit said no give us a second round pick for them oh my god okay so well and
So here's Luke Glenn Denning, by the way.
So he's going to turn 31 at the end of April.
Career high, 12 goals this season in 60 games.
Six goals, three assists, nine points.
What's his cap hit?
Whatever it is, it's too much.
I don't know if you should be in the show with those numbers.
No one on Detroit has eclipsed 60 points.
Now this is also a bit unfair because some guys are having
actually very good seasons for detroit but all of them got injured anthony mantha was having a
fantastic season 38 points in 43 games on a team that can do nothing nothing and he's been pretty
good oh boy uh no one really outside you know tyler bertuzzi 21 goals 27 assists 48 points in
171 games that guy was their all-star wow so it reminds me of the year that leo camarada was the
leafs all-star right similar numbers 20 20 assists that was a fun year it was a fun year um brent
seabrook is the next one brent seabrook's contract is unreal four more years 6.875 million dollar
cap hit he is 34 and when he was injured steve you said this is probably it
wait who was this Brent Seabrook oh yeah oh yeah dude now Blackhawks uh at NBC uh Blackhawks
tweeted about Brent Seabrook um doing the push-up challenge and apparently he looks pretty I mean
he can do push-ups but there's a big difference from they said you know it looks like Brent
Seabrook's recovery is going well I mean yeah you can you can do a bunch of push-ups and that's
great but like that's a big difference from playing hockey at the level that we're used to
seeing brent seabrook at yeah that's a little ridiculous but even if even if even if no i don't
think they were man this is a blackhawks this is an nbc affiliate i don't think so oh heavens so
let me ask you this here brent seabrook if even if brent seabrook is playing like brent seabrook
did close to his prime close to his prime four more years at six eight seven five at 34 years
old you'd still pause right you'd still go i don't know because that's that's a uh a contract
where you look at it and you say he's got uh what is it three stanley he was he there for all three
yes yes he's got he's got three stanley cups in the back of his pocket you you're okay with that
right yeah yeah i think you are i think you are by the way i get drafted by the blackhawks in my
be a prayer player or sorry my uh my memorial cup i win the memorial cup is the kingston front next
because they have the worst offense in all the CHL.
So I was like, I'm going to be on them.
So it's harder.
And then I got drafted by the Blackhawks third overall.
Did you demand a trade?
I did not.
Can you do that?
I think eventually you can.
Yeah.
Eventually.
I haven't got there yet.
I don't know if you can do it right away.
But I've been playing with,
I don't know why they put my player on the first line.
I guess Blackhawks center depth isn't great,
but there are certain players in NHL that are a cheat code
and Patrick Kane is definitely one of them.
Like, whoa.
You just like pass him the puck and let him do stuff.
It's a little bit crazy.
Milan Lucic, next on our list.
Four years, six million bucks.
He still has four more years at six million
and a full no movement clause
that kicks in June 1st next year.
This is a dude who was traded last offseason.
Yes.
With that contract.
Yes.
Oh my God.
Steve, I was wondering why you were so quiet
because i don't have the screen up so i can't see oh my bad no it's just so i'm like where are
they so many bad deals there's so many bad deals they're good they're gonna have to uh i like your
idea for compliance buyouts adam i just i think that i think they have to do it um and i also
don't think it's enough um why do i think it's gonna have to be more than two it's well i think
it's going to be two per team plus there's i think they're going to do salary rollback of the players
they're gonna have to really claw it back yep they're gonna have to they're doing it for their
bloody office employees you know who they can't do that on or at least it'd be really hard is the
guys like tavaris who make most of their money july 1st can you roll back a salary like that
right how does that work if you just get a yeah bonus payment of like nine million dollars i think
Mitch Marder and Matthews have similar things too, right?
Yep.
Oh, July 1st this year is going to be a bad day for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
Well, I don't know.
I think they're going to be okay.
I mean, it's probably going to be a good day for them.
They won the NBA championship.
They're okay.
Yeah, that's true.
They sold hats.
They're okay.
Hey, nice hat there.
There you go.
They just donated, by the way, I think it was 27,000 pounds of food to the food bank.
Good.
27,000 pounds.
that's i just was like that is an obscene number and you got to think with the restaurants and
everything on the concourse and 11 the one outside of it and real sports i guess you can see but 27
000 pounds just it's all just oatmeal all of the carrots all of it and potatoes raw potato bags
there you go yeah nothing that you want what's the chris rock bit uh bit it's like what do we
give them grain do you remember that do you guys remember that there was okay so years ago he was
talking about aid in aid situations and he was like you know he's like what do we he's like he's
like well these countries they need aid and he's like and he's like what do we give them grain what
do you seen anybody eating grain he's like why don't we just give him a whopper it only costs
99 cents and it's a really funny really it's really good um carl alstner next on our list
with that Montreal Canadiens not 19 logo.
Two years, $4.625 million.
He did work his way back to the NHL for four games this year.
Yeah, no, that's not working your way back.
That's not working your way back.
That is the Habs had a big old bunch of injuries,
and they called him up because why not?
He has played.
Sorry, go ahead.
No, he's cooked.
oh well as an nhl player he's cooked so he signed this deal i believe in the summer of 2017
he was scratched opening night of 1890 and has appeared in just nine big league organized games
for the organization before sorry he appeared in nine big league games from 18 in 1819 and this
year only four games so in the last two years for nine million nine plus million dollars they have
gotten maybe 13 games if my right my math is right so it's almost a million dollars a game for carl
osner oh my god yeah he played a full 82 games 12 points and then nine games four games almost
a million bucks and at the end 87 games in the ahl with the laval rocket he has two goals
well he's never a big goal scoring guy anyway but no his career high is five
that's the fifth overall pick from 2007 um now what's interesting apparently he has according
to luke he's he's quietly put in solid if overcompensated work for two seasons
interestingly with that too um if you're in the in the ahl in his case he doesn't have to worry
about um uh putting 15 of his money into escrow so as much as it probably is not where he wants
to play, he gets that 15% back in escrow by not playing for the Montreal Canadiens. And he might
get a full compliance buyout here if we go into it. So financially, at least, more than taken
care of. But that's crazy. Andrew Ladd's another guy. Three years left at $5.5 million. He was
nearly traded in Minnesota at the trade deadline for Zach Parise. The craziest deal of the 2020
trade deadline never happened oh do you have any idea steve because you were you were right on the
floor for that yeah what that deal might have looked like have you heard any of the pieces
besides because there were i know there were probably picks and salary retention anything
you ever heard you ever heard what it would be yeah i well if i remember correct from the day
and i believe they said this on television it was something along the lines of parise
for lad and who else was involved i think was miko koivu involved i want to say like it would
have been an enormous deal because he yeah miko koivu did not waive his no trade that's he was
he was going to be dealt so maybe that was him i remember that something along those lines and i
remember frege i think was saying something or was it in 31 thoughts where he basically said like
it was basically implied from reports and i can't remember from who caught me on the spot but um
basically they were worried about too many details of the trade getting out
otherwise lou would kaya bosh it so that stopped the deal lou no i assume that's not what stopped
the deal i mean another you know a team that's probably not too bummed that they paused the
season when they did you know if they do end up picking it back up islanders yeah they were uh
falling off falling off they're on the outside looking in uh as we speak now do they have
injuries uh well johnny boy chuck for sure um with the uh eyelid oh yeah that was because i
know has been on and off all year uh but in terms of their key guys i think they've been relatively
lucky um barzal i think has been in there like they just they they're really struggling to score
goals and it seemed like when their defense showed some cracks so their goaltending showed some
cracks they didn't really have an answer for it right right so lou goes out and he gets jean
gabriel pegeau uh signs him to an enormous deal signs him to five million per he's probably locked
in as their second line and he paid basically what vegas paid for thomas tatar right wasn't it a
first second third yeah yeah so that's a tough one man so what's interesting is miko koivu probably
would have been thrown in as a a salary match thing because i'm looking at the cap friendly
thing i'm just trying to figure i'm trying to piece this together as best i can miko koivu is
in his last year he's 37 years old he's the captain uh and he was making 5.5 million dollars
and this would have been his chance to make a run at the playoffs however uh zach parise who's got
a bazillion years left he's not expiring uh till 24 25 but i believe at that point he'll only be
making a couple million bucks a year anyway because it's all been paid in bonuses uh but if
you look at where the uh andrew ladd makes 5.5 and miko koibu both make 5.5 so i'm wondering if
there was some sort of that's how you evened out the salaries because from an asset perspective
i'm not really sure that makes sense but from a well okay well we'll take andrew lab but you have
to take miku koivu as well to give us some relief this season or something i don't know there's it's
it odd it seems odd to include them it just does this is why these bloody deals are illegal now
um so this season zach parisa was making nine million bucks cash wow uh next so here sorry
No, I'm even getting ahead of myself.
So this is why they're making these bullshit contracts illegal.
Zach Parise's cap hit is a little over.
It's a hair over 7.5.
His salary has been 12, 12, 11, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9 this season, 8 next season.
Not one of those numbers is below 7.5.
They're all over what his actual cap hit is.
And it's not until two years from now that it goes to six.
And then the year after, two, then one, then one.
So we got a couple of years left of Breeze, basically.
Yeah, so those years at the end are basically phantom years
to get the salary cap number down.
So it's a 13-year contract that for all intents and purposes is basically 10.
right koivu also i was looking at some of the articles from the trade deadline it says koivu
opted not to waive his no move clause ahead of the deadline so he couldn't be moved to the islanders
well and and parise has had a great career and i'm kind of looking at his numbers right now but
what i would love and i don't know if i'm looking for it on cap friendly not seeing it
is i would love to know what the cap recapture would be on when he retires because you have to
think that he's going to be uh he's going to be out after the at minimum the 22 23 season right
because steve you mentioned he it's eight six two one one oh he's gone he's gone so do you even think
he's going to stick around to make when he's made about 100 million dollars over the course of his
career do you stick around for the extra two oh way more way more i'm pretty sure yeah the value
of his contract his current contract is 98 million dollars that's absurd it's uh it's two million
dollars less than conor mcdavid's contract like i i keep saying it's unbelievable and actually this
season he's he's having resurgence there he's i shouldn't even say resurgence it's been two years
of this he had 28 goals last season 61 points not bad at all and 25 this year probably would
have got to about 28 same goal scoring pace which the islanders can use why not right
yes it seems odd that they would bring him in it does seem odd but maybe they're thinking well hey
we don't get hit with the cap recapture we know he's got a couple years left and we don't we're
not responsible for the last two or three years of this deal little amarillo is such a weird guy
right i mean you have to think of it that way so yeah well yeah i think you'd have to look at it
like andrew sorry andrew ladd they're going to be on the hook for i don't know why minnesota
to trade Zach Parise I don't understand that part other than he might not be happy and they might
just want to move on but what what doesn't make what makes sense to me is yeah the Islanders get
him and maybe he scores 25 and 25 and then he retires or whatever it is um and then it's like
oh the last couple years of the deal we're probably not going to see him around so we probably don't
need to worry about his cap against you know his cap hit against us in a couple of seasons whereas
Minnesota if they trade him I mean I guess they're going to be subject to cap recapture in some
regard anyway like what happened in vancouver but why would minnesota trade him at this point
anyway it's almost like why bother what do you want reason might be just the cash involved
because parise has 19 million dollars in cash remaining to be paid out and lad has 12 million
dollars so just from a strictly money standpoint you can look at and say i save seven million
dollars that would be it right there then i would think but it's a reason i don't know if that's
Aren't hockey trades so much fun?
Yeah.
Are we having fun?
This is what I keep saying.
You need to either have a degree in economics
or be someone who regularly DMs Adam to know how any of this works.
What?
What?
What?
I'm just saying.
I'm just saying.
Did you see, Adam, did you see the news about Bauer?
Bauer hockey?
are you just segueing out into this thing i don't know we're not we are not done yet i did
about power because i got a couple i got a couple others to go man all right let's go just let me
just quickly let me quickly hit kyle akposo three years six million bucks you got to feel bad for
kyle he's had a rough injury plagues time yeah yeah um yeah like there's just nothing um james
neil edmonton he's got 19 goals this year but yeah i don't know i just that's a tough one
that's a tough one because i don't know i don't know if he's cooked yet you know what i mean like
he he might not be cooked but at 575 and the oilers prospects are looking pretty good right
they've got a good system could you not find 20 goals from a guy who makes 925 a million a
million and a half right i mean if they find a way to lure jesse pull your rv back which i don't
think that's gonna happen but you know just to trade them yeah and then of course uh david
backus uh which is another guy unfortunately body just doesn't hold up anymore now they do
they did bring him in because they do like his mentorship when they did you know trade for him
it was like yeah the cap's a little high but we like you know an older guy like this who's been
there in the room with a bunch of young guys uh he's only scored he only scored once in 22 games
this year but he's only going to make four million dollars in real money next year and you have to
wonder if the ducks who have a very stable ownership situation if they don't spend wildly
would even bother it's like ah whatever it's one more year we'll just pay him yeah well they're
not in minnesota so they can't spell wildly you know and and let me just stop steve before we get
into the bauer thing i do want to throw this out there too and i want to know if you guys think
we're talking about contracts which is why i'm tying this in um there are rumors that and i don't
know how substantial they could possibly be um but there are there is a uh a scout named roger
dicklin uh he was a scout for the hurricanes washington capitals um and he's he's just saying
he's tweeting this i don't know how true this is but apparently jake muzzin has been a big influence
on Kyle Clifford staying in Toronto.
And he has been told that the Leafs,
that a potential extension for Kyle Clifford would look like this.
Now, again, you know, I haven't seen CJ, I haven't seen Freed,
and I haven't seen Bob McKenzie on this.
Those are the three guys who are usually in on this.
Told that a potential extension would be three years
at close to $2 million per season.
Are you thumbs up or thumbs down on that?
Bro, no. No.
What are you doing?
No, that's a thumbs down.
Thumbs down.
Thumbs down.
$2 million for three years.
No.
Okay.
Why?
No.
Dude, I expected, again, I expected these guys to get creative.
When you committed to paying the money that you are to the star forwards,
you're committed to getting creative and going cheap with the rest of them.
you do not give $2 million a year to a guy who has a career high of 11 goals
and 21 points.
What are you doing?
Oh,
but he provides this.
He provides that.
Okay.
Fine.
Keep it.
Like,
is that just the new reality now where you got to give 2 million bucks to
play?
Like I thought that's what you traded Matt Martin for.
Right.
Was that a temporary thing?
I love Kyle Clifford.
I do.
I like him being on the Leafs.
Close to $2 million per?
No.
For a locker room guy?
No.
I think he's more than a locker room guy.
He does.
He provides something that the Leafs lack.
Is that worth $2 million?
Listen, if you've put yourself in a position where paying Kyle Clifford
$2 million makes sense for you, I think you're doing it wrong.
Interesting.
That's interesting.
I think you're doing it wrong.
And there are plenty of teams that would sign him for that,
but that might be doing it wrong.
I love the guy.
keep the guy that's too much it's it's two million dollars is too much per season
three years is too many years you are all the way out steve wow i'm off i'm not no do it
keep the guy keep but maybe now let's play devil's advocate i i'm not saying don't sign him he's a
bum i think that's what you just said no i'm saying i'm saying also old people can die yeah
yeah i'm saying that's too much for him can you imagine showing this clip to like two months ago
and just being like decipher from this what you will um kyle clifford wouldn't even be on the
but i did maybe because of the way that the nhl is and i called this years ago
the the correction in market inefficiency has been so aggressive towards the little water bug
speedy guy yeah that guys like tom wilson are are this rarity in the nhl and now all of a sudden
all these teams that have all these water bugs are now looking for the next tom wilson
or looking for something that he provides now kyle clifford and tom wilson are not cut from
the same cloth no Tom Wilson scores way more goals but maybe you just pay two million bucks
to guys who are tough and can skate now like maybe that's the new NHL I hope not
I don't know I don't know okay so apparently it is but when you what did they trade to LA
to get um to get uh Kyle Clifford and uh Jack Campbell well here let me let me look that up
I'm pretty sure the Leafs also, on top of giving Kyle Clifford that money,
I'm pretty sure that would activate one of the picks from the trade.
Trevor Moore, a 2020 third-round pick, Columbus's,
and a 2021 conditional third-round pick.
And that would be the condition?
Resigning?
I would think.
I think you're right, Steve.
yeah i think steve's right yeah yeah yeah also the kings retained 50 of clifford's salary but
that doesn't matter going forward the 2021 conditional third round pick conditions the
toronto 2021 third round pick upgrades to a second round pick if either kyle clifford
resigns with toronto or if the leafs make the 2019 2020 playoffs and jack campbell wins six
regular season games so i don't think campbell has won six regular season games but the uh
But the re-signing thing is what we're talking about here, right?
Yeah, but no, it's important to know.
Listen, if you're already giving up the second-round pick
because Jack Campbell has won those games, then it doesn't matter.
Then it's immaterial.
Well, what if there's no playoffs?
I don't know.
Well, I would assume – I don't know.
Because he has to do both of those things.
They have to make the playoffs.
It has to be both?
Yeah.
No, it's or.
It's or.
Or one of those three?
It's one of those two things.
So the 2021 third upgrades to a second-round pick
if either Clifford re-signs with Toronto
or if the Leafs make the 2019-2020 playoffs
and Campbell wins six regular season games.
And Campbell wins six.
So they have to do both of those second things.
Yes.
Yeah, so those two things are tied.
Based on the verbiage, if the Leafs make the 2019-2020 playoffs
and Jack Campbell wins six regular season games.
so that's Campbell
so what if there are no playoffs
I would you can't meet the conditions
of the trade then
but then they can re-sign him and then it's still a second
yeah right or
don't re-sign him and make it a third
instead of a second
round pick when you don't have a first
yeah
like I'm supportive of this
trade but
why are you doing this thing
that you don't have to do
I
I'm just
You would hope that there's another
So unbelievably
Incapable of taking care of themselves
That you have to do this
If the answer is yes
I think you've failed
Regardless of what you do with this move
What is your percentage faith in Dubas
Right now
Good question
I wish someone else did the contracts
that's the one thing I do sort of I do sort of wish that uh I don't know what it is and I don't
know what you could have done differently because I wasn't in the room and it's tough it's a tough
one to call but um whatever the negotiating style was supposed to be it started to go wrong with
Nylander and it just continued well and Nylander's contract is fine it's great even his contract
is fine. No, but the Nylander holdout didn't need
to happen. We now know that. My problem is that
you could have given both of those
Marner and Nylander contracts
last a year ahead of time.
And it would have been the same number.
Justin Hall signs for $2 million per year
and
immediately starts playing the worst hockey
of the season. Pierre Engvall
signs his new two-year deal,
immediately starts playing the worst hockey
of his season. Martin Marincin.
He signed Martin Marincin in
January.
beg your actual pardon and now you're gonna sign this guy to two million dollars per year for three
years give up a second round pick to do it what are you doing what are you doing like this this
is why profound change to this team might be the way to go is it so flawed that you had to give
Justin Hall two million bucks and then watch him play the worst hockey of his career and then also
give two million bucks to Kyle Clifford oh boy oh boy guys I think this team might not be as good
as we thought oh I think this season proved that I told you no faith in my element yeah back in my
element talking about how the Leafs oh my god dude well it's true like it's you know it's weird
though talking about this has brought back how awful this season was like it sucked it was a bag
of shit it was terrible it's funny a couple times recently i've been like you know i i regret ever
complaining about this season and then i went back and looked i'm like no no this season was
terrible and there was a reason to blame i miss hockey but let's pump the brakes on the oh i just
want this season back this season sucked in the in the weirdest way them not finishing this season
could have saved Leafs nation forget the players but it might have saved the players too could
have saved Leafs nation from another awful heartbreak or just total apathy because a few
years ago what you have was apathy for a team that just sucked and people just stopped going
which was the first that I've ever seen and then this year was sort of been like it was sort of
they're a little bit apathy set in because the team just didn't show up and you fire the head
coach and you go on a good 20 game streak and then play 500 hockey the rest of the way and
talk about lack of effort admit to lack of effort and we're talking about we're talking about like
needing a luxury tax just to be able to get through next season and compliance buyouts and
how our team's going to make it and we're talking about giving kyle clifford two million bucks
for three years it is legal the weird thing about that that tweet is that i don't see how anybody
gets a contract right now no i got i just don't even see how you could do that so that's that
gives me pause i give you a pause why do you see that i i we talked about this last show like if
if you are willing to make concessions to secure the bag team would be open to it i think this is
potentially an opportunity uh to get some deals done like there might be some gms out there
able to kind of take advantage
of a situation where players are
a little unsure
of what their future is going to look like.
So take advantage of Kyle Clifford and don't do it at $2 million.
Right? This is what I'm saying.
I
do what you're going to do, Kyle.
Are you saying you're not a fan?
No.
Wow.
No. That's big.
No, dude. I think
he uh i think he's a tremendous evaluator of talent um but like the gymnastics they have to do
with the cap and who are we always giving credit to for that uh brandon prudhoe the guy who wrote
the damn rules so like when it when it comes to i i just the asset management this season i think
it's been pretty poor and it sounds like it's only getting worse uh and the cap situation sounds like
It's only going to get worse.
We're talking about what the hell are they going to do
with Morgan Rielly in a couple years or
Freddie in a couple years. So we're going to give
three to Kyle Clifford.
Nonsense.
Nonsense.
Adam, are you also on the
I Don't Trust Dubas
train? Are you right?
What's up with your mic, man?
Yeah, your mic's...
Is it too loud?
Yeah, way loud.
Why are you using that shitty mic?
Oh, what's up?
It's awesome.
We got $170 mics.
They're really bad.
It's really bad, man.
Did it change all of a sudden?
Yeah, dude, that's terrible.
I don't know what happened.
He just came in here like, hey, it's Jesse.
So am I feeling like that?
I feel like part of me, every time these deals are signed,
I think, what else could you do?
The Marner deal was like, okay, I guess you had to overpay.
And I said at the time, I'm like, if you have to overpay to get him in the lineup,
assuming, you know, he was a 94-point player, great.
But then he, as Steve said, you know, Hall resigns, proceeds to play awful hockey.
Engvall resigns, proceeds to play awful hockey.
Marner resigns, proceeded to not be Mitch Marner for a good chunk of the season.
And part of that, I would think, is, you know, due to a coaching change and that sort of thing.
But game-breaker money, got to be a game-breaker player.
You just do.
and the the the part i think that
i understand the philosophy of keep all the skilled players on the team i get
that and i think that's the right i think
that's a right the right thing to do however
uh my concern with the leafs is the um the
the attitude within the team and so i don't know if i can pin that on kyle dubas because i i think
if you were to go back a couple of years ago in the summertime and and you know when steve and i
were doing sports radio and the fan and if you were to say well do you want to keep all those
guys who'd been like yeah absolutely we got to keep all those guys we got to keep we want we
can and we will and i was fully subscribed to that in typical leaf but it seems like the team
has not risen to the dubious at least tried to rise to that but none of these guys gave him a
break none of these guys gave an inch and now they're not even given their best hockey which
kind of is like that's the worst formula right in typical leaves fashion oh we have some potential
signing news oh wicked is it a defenseman of course not like i'm i'm now getting sick of it
i'm getting sick of it like why did we re-sign this guy well you know it actually makes sense
to resign why did this guy and then this guy and then and now i'm like holy shit sign someone who
skates backwards for the love of god for the love of god you didn't okay i know there aren't any
games on now but they had 70 previously played games you didn't watch them no no no this is the
move this is the move that you got to make well and that brings me to a thing that i've been
thinking of and a lot of we caught a lot of heat when we talked about when you know after the david
ayers game uh where it was like i think you got to make a big move um you know it might turn out
that brian burke was right and i know that's not a popular popular sentiment and i know that's going
to be thrown in my face but he said you can't put that much money up front with this group
and if you consider that the cap will probably go down no you gotta now you definitely can't
No, you've got to pay as much as possible.
You've got to pay $2 million to guys on your fourth line.
Well, that's the thing, right?
They have guys that can play on the fourth line for less than that.
Like Spets, I think, has been a great pick-up.
What did you give him over a million dollars for?
A guy who immediately tucked his season in the second he secured the bag.
Thank you for reminding me of this, guys.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
And then, oh, but Spezza's going to take a discount for sure.
Oh, yeah, Thornton's signing here for Liegeman.
Spezza did.
Wake up.
Wake up.
What if Cody Cece comes back for 925?
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
Also, do I sound better?
Yeah, way better.
Way better.
Way better.
It's great.
No, I just, no.
no he's not a fit and it's not even i'm sure he could play somewhere i don't i don't doubt that
i know steve would uh but i think he's got a couple seasons left at least but he doesn't
fit the system like there's nothing about him that fits what the leafs are trying to do
so the thing is they're not good yeah and what i want to go back to is maybe you really can't
if your team like one thing that the leafs and no team is going to plan for this never really
plan for a salary rollback. In that situation, I can see one of the big four moving for defensive
help or cap relief so they can find the defensive help that they need. If a cap rolls back five or
six million bucks, it doesn't matter how many yawnsons and capitans you have. You need the
yawnsons and the capitans because they make less money and provide value. The bigger value guys
are the guys that are actually going to get you something back that could provide value on the
back end which you need and you know i wonder what the jake muzzin contract looks like if the
salary gets rolled back how does that look not that you could have predicted it but man and i
love jake muzzin let's do this what are we doing uh austin matthews zach hyman mitch martin there's
a line all right which is not a great line i don't like mitch martin matthews together they
So that line is $22.6 million plus Zach Hyman is $2.2.
It's about $24.8 million.
What are you trying to do here?
Just wait.
Are you going through all the lines and then calculating them?
He's going to do it.
I guess not.
No, do it.
I guess not.
Well, okay.
Tavares 11, Nylander 6, Kerfoot 3.5.
There was another line.
so now you have Kasperi Kapanen making over three you have you have like every single
forward is going to make well over a million dollars is basically the point that I'm dragging
us to Pierre Engvall is going to make over a million bucks uh Andreas Janssen we when he
comes back is going to make over three million bucks where is the I kept Elia Mikheyev lord
knows what that guy is going to make I kept saying what I was really interested in what I
was interested in seeing is the creative thinking uh with this management group it wasn't their
ability to sign the big fish it was their ability to bring in bargain bin guys but what they do is
they bring in bargain bin guys and then they give them the son of the moon and they pay kyle clifford
two million dollars a year well we don't know that remember that we don't know we don't know
that could be completely wrong because it's just one guy one scout but well if he's if he's putting
a canary in the tunnel uh I say it sucks that deal sucks all right there you go hey yo let's
move on to the press conference I know we've got some questions Jesse uh do you want to get to your
Bauer thing oh yeah shit okay sorry um a few people have reported on this today but Steve
was right to bring it up uh and this is from Emily Kaplan of ESPN um hockey manufacturing
company Bauer has been winding down business in both of its North America in both of its North
american manufacturing facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic but the company figured if
it couldn't provide helmets and skates for elite athletes perhaps it could use its resources to
help doctors nurses and other first responders bauer is now producing medical shields that could
be delivered to hospitals as soon as next week so those are the ones that you wear around your head
to make sure that nothing gets in your mouth or your eyes or your ears or your nose by wednesday
morning, Bauer had orders come into its Quebec facility for more than 100,000 units across
Canada, according to their CEO. And one of the things they're also trying to do is provide it
for the United States, because I don't know if you've been watching Andrew Cuomo's press
conferences every day, but they are desperately short, especially in New York. And Ed Kinnelly,
who's the CEO of Bauer, said, listen, in the US, the word's not out yet. We're trying to reach out
to medical facilities but in canada it's a little bit more centralized because we have um we have
you know government health care so it's it's a little bit easier to do in the u.s a little bit
tougher and they're just trying to reach out and get the word out there as much as they possibly
can hey we can provide these who needs them which is awesome i think yeah absolutely it's a company
doing what they ought to be doing that's all you okay yeah i just i don't know
can i tell you another good story sure labatt's in london ontario has uh is going to make instead
of beer they're going to make um hand sanitizer that's good that's awesome and louis vuitton in
uh france has converted its factory into a hand sanitizer factory from a perfume factory
good awesome so things are happening it's good guys it's good things steve what's on your mind
you're really bad at hiding it
did I do something wrong no I'm just
you made me think about the Leafs
and how no
I thought I was in the
like oh my did I do something wrong
oh yeah I'm really looking forward to this all being
done and me watching Leaf hockey again
oh I can watch my
like okay you know what
I've been I've been
here we go okay
get your kids out of the room bring it
this is your chance to mute it
Three, two, one.
Yeah, I really can't wait for all this to be over
so I can return to watching my stupid fucking hockey team
make stupid fucking moves again
and hit the ice and play stupid fucking hockey and lose again.
I can't fucking wait.
I can't wait.
I can't wait.
No, go out and do it again.
Do it again.
Sign everyone.
Everyone gets two million bucks.
We're great guys.
We're great guys.
It's great.
Oh, fuck.
I just, I can't, I cannot, I actually,
this team sickens me to my frigging stomach.
Wow.
Oh my God.
Sickens me to my stomach.
Woo!
No, because we believed, stupidly, like children,
that things were changing and they were going to win.
And they're going to come out of this.
Things changed.
Yeah, they're better.
You know what?
Sure.
They're on the way down.
They're on the way down.
So everybody who has thought about making videos about the Leafs,
based on my experience, now is the time to begin.
When they come back, you start because you start on the way down.
And then by the time they hit the bottom, you sort of know what they're doing.
And then they go up and disappoint you differently,
but at least you have an established career.
That is the recipe for success.
This dumb goddamn team.
Fuck.
It really doesn't matter who's in charge.
it really does not matter the crest is poison oh my god what what talk about your freaking perfume
what what hand sanitizer sir hand sanitizer gotta be a positive folly over here can i end the show
on something fun sure please all right so uh this is from david david wants to know can adam explain
to us why the spitfire is the best plane ever and how it saved the world hashtag i'm not from
windsor that's from midvana at midvana it's david isn't it okay can you go ahead adam okay well like
i said last episode i don't this is our our tradition now to talk about history um like i
said last episode my my equipment knowledge is fuzzy um but obviously with the battle of britain
the spitfire was the the plane and the and the germans had a plane called the stuka and it was
known as a dive bombing plane so it was so super dangerous when germany's whole thing was based on
what's called a blitzkrieg right so it was a fast they call it lightning warfare so they come in
they go wham and then it's like a boxer that hits you really quick if they hit you really quick and
knock you out bang you're done but if like the russians they're able to punch back then then the
the style of warfare doesn't really work for the the german army of this time so what happened was
um there was a couple things first off the stukas were not the best at uh aerial combat there weren't
a lot there was another plane called the hurricane which wasn't great it was a bit slower and whatever
but the the spitfires were faster and they had they were a little bit more nimble and quick
And one thing that sort of propped up their numbers, and I'm not taking away anything from the Spitfire, was that the British had something called radar, which the Germans did not.
So every time the Germans showed up to drop bombs on England during the Battle of Britain in like 1940, 1941, the Brits were in the air already waiting for them.
Whereas every other country Germany had invaded, that had not been the case.
They didn't know.
so it seemed and then it got into the german pilots heads that they were going to have like it
they it was it mentally really fucked with them because they started to get depressed because
they knew it wasn't just going to be some easy raid where they dropped a bunch of bombs and won
a bunch of medals afterwards it was going to be a hard dog fight and a lot of them weren't coming
home and so i as much as i i don't know as much about the spitfire but at the time it was one of
the it was the preeminent uh aircraft aircraft fighter plane and it was the thing that saved
england and that was the plane that that did and i know steve does not care he's thinking about the
leaves right now but i'm just letting you know that's what it was so so i know the concept better
than i know the aircraft that's what i would yo that's crazy i liked it i'm gonna give you a clap
emoji thank you jesse i steve yeah i have to be honest with you the what can you describe what
you're feeling right now because i know you're thinking about the leafs i know you're not you're
not here with us you're thinking about the leafs what's the feeling in your inside give me describe
it that's the fucking point what's the point they're not playing games and then when they do
they're gonna suck all i had so it's the anticipation it you know what's worse sometimes
to being in a shitty experience what's that anticipating a shitty experience
yeah yeah the oh the leafs yeah feel the excitement 2020 2021
who cares i'm i'm just mad that they're screwing up the raptors winning back to back
that sucks i'm more mad about that i don't know are you are you really more mad about that
yeah are you it sounds like it yeah i really believe you yeah uh i don't think the raptors
would have got past the box i'm not gonna lie it would have been really tough janice is amazing
but yeah and then and then going to the finals and you're either playing lebron and ad or uh
kawaii and paul george yeah i don't know probably not the raptors either no yeah who is that kawaii
guy never heard is the raptors strength is their depth and in the nba playoffs your depth is less
used because you shorten the bench so that's kind of they're going to be that's what always made
them a great regular season team is they had a great secondary thing but i don't know man i just
i don't think they i think they would have gone far maybe second third round but that i think
that's would have been it that's just me yeah yeah they give fourth liners a lot of money
do they jesse i don't know the cap as much as in basketball uh the crazy thing about uh the nba and
the way basketball works they don't have a fourth line and it's not hockey so uh i don't think that
applies here steve but i know one team based out of toronto that does give fourth liners quite a
bit of money that might make you a little upset if we keep talking about it damn tfc
anyway hey guys listen uh steve i'm sorry to end on this note no it's just we gotta ruin your day
oh my god we're gonna need compliance buyouts and a luxury tax and no team's making any money
and we're still talking about them paying fourth liners two million dollars fuck off
holy shit this hockey team this alleged nightmare masquerading as a hockey team holy shit yeah i
wouldn't make any signings right now you don't know what you're walking into you just you should
just freeze and just say yeah sorry i can't make a disappointment well hold on though again it's
not a verified source no offense to the person that that wrote it but we don't know we don't
know who is this person i told you he was a scout and he says i see and his his bio says i tweet
what i'm told oh adam roger am i mad about the opinion of some random making shit up he was a
he was a scout for the canes and a scout for the blackhawks is he verified no he's some guy
i don't believe him then okay i don't believe him and the leaks are great and how dare you make me
slander my team okay hold on though hold on i'm pulling up the pension plan puppets according
to his agent in a toronto sun article that came out two days ago that we somehow missed
yes they are talking in extension yeah according to clifford's agent kyle clifford's agent yeah
that's a legitimate source yeah there's there's smoke there's five league men there it is
heard it here first i used to be a scout for the hurricanes and the
seals yeah well we'll see we'll see what happens anyway i guess we'll end on that note that sad
sad depressing on sunday our next episode we will do a review of tiger king oh man we keep
forgetting oh i finally saw it all and so no no no no spoiler sunday so we'll talk about on sunday
okay everybody tiger king between now and then so we can all talk about it together
