blackouts you know i live in wyoming obviously i am considered to be the home market of both colorado and vegas i live eight hours away from denver 13 from vegas wow i couldn't get either one on espn plus because of local blackouts so this year i got cable for the avalanche games and now the vegas app has their games wait he couldn't get either he couldn't get either yeah because because blackouts make sense i thought it was gonna be he got both yes yes jesse you would think that yeah yeah that is the logical thing to do that's what oh god you know what's been funny is that is reading the comments from people saying how how much better the experience is just illegally pirating something and i have to tell you something like when you illegally

pirate something usually it's like you got to go to a it's like going to a cd bar you're going to a cd website i'm like are they tracking my shit probably speakeasy yeah and then you find out later it's actually a speak hard and the alcohol is hard yeah um and i think i think uh uh the the thing is is that um there's gonna have to be some changes we're actually um alan uh walsh reached out this morning he's like hey i want to do an episode on the changing landscape of broadcasting for fans so our next episode is going to be about that i'm pretty sure we're recording it tomorrow so there's going to be we're going to have a guest expert on there who may have spent 40 years in in hockey broadcasting so i think you'll find this very interesting not gary betman not gary um

uh and from five finger five finger shuffle gaming it's a big name wow uh fun fact as a fitness professional for players who train harder than normal during the off season it is totally possible to appear to have grown an inch so remember we were talking about that tweet from somebody who was like hey like how did these guys all get taller in their late 20s posture I guess this is because the posterior Posterior chain Work can really have a massive Effect on allowing players especially hockey

Players who are more likely to have worse Posture than a lot of athletes to naturally Stand up straighter yeah because hockey players are down Like this all the time I just thought that was fascinating That actually does Make a ton of sense yeah we are Like I mean we're just bags of water Well what human beings yeah

Yeah there's you know there's hard stuff In the middle but like no we're just bags of water We can be remade With good training. Oh, with good training. Yes. I was about to say, no. Malleable.

We're actually kind of famously not able to be remade. All right. So like super, what's the word? Mortal. Craft Hockeyville game tonight with Toronto and Buffalo. I was kind of surprised that it's a preseason game. But what I really want to talk about is Toronto versus Ottawa. What did you mean by that?

You thought they were going to have a regular season game at Joe Thornton community? No, no. No, but usually – they have – haven't they done that before? Back in the day when it was a CBC thing, I'm pretty sure – I guess, yeah, if you win Kraft Hockeyville, they come and play a preseason game in your barn. Yeah, it's preseason. That's what it is. Okay, I got that mixed up.

Maybe you're thinking about hometown hockey. That's probably what I was – yeah, okay. Anyway, sorry. Where they just go to the place, but the game's still not at the location. Right, and that show doesn't exist anymore anyway. Watch someone fumble with their phone behind Ron McClain. I got to take a photo for Nancy. I got to show Nancy.

That is very true. I'm always shocked that people who sit behind home plate for an entire game aren't just waving the entire time. Oh, I've always thought about that. Why are people just sitting there? Hey, Susie, I'm on TV for a nine inning. They're rich. They don't do that shit.

A John Boy breakdown. It was a game between Zach Greinke plays for the Mariners, right? It was the Mariners, and I can't remember who they were playing. there was a guy in a bright yellow banana costume right behind home plate and i can't believe they didn't ask him to change or anything but he was just behind home plate the entire game in a banana costume that's awesome and oh john boy had some fun with it because a ball got hit above him and he had to like take off his banana hood so he's like oh he had to unpeel himself for a minute and god i love john boy uh did you see the uh rowdy telez interview with john boy

for the rowdy i think i might have saw a clip basically uh i guess and i think this was supposed to be in good fun but uh rowdy telez was on a baseball podcast and they're like hey what was it like when uh josh donaldson got called up you know former teammates or whatever and rowdy said hey man like when you come into the the locker room you and you're new you address the team and you tell them you know you introduce yourself and i guess josh donaldson looked at him and said they know who i am i like that that cranky by the way is on the uh kansas city royals never played for the mariners maybe you're thinking maybe they were playing against the maybe or maybe i'm just stupid i don't know uh toronto and ottawa versus versus each other night

two here's what i want to say this is the thing that i am excited about obviously we love easton the beaston we'll talk about him uh got to talk a little bit about joseph wall but the thing that i really want to chat about is john klingberg and shots from the point okay i know that this seems like a like a nothing thing but for me i am very excited to see shots from the point this year dude it's an enormous thing it's it's a it's a complete strategic change john klingberg by the way had eight shots i know it's on goal eight shots on goal wow eight registered shots not eight chances eight shots why not it's preseason practice exactly but what i liked about him and i know there was some tire fire defensive work or whatever it's jonathan terrible but the problem

i think that the leafs have had and if you like literally their power play has been spectacular for years but um one of the options i think that you could easily take away or you knew was never going to happen was you knew that the least were never going to shoot from the point it was going to be austin and then eventually mitch developed a shot and then it could be him and what you could do then if you have uh forwards that are quick is you can crowd the blue line and push the puck out right because if you're not going to get a shot from there there's nothing to really defend and you can kind of spread spread your d out a little bit right now they have an extra option and then in there with with him doing that is tyler bertuzzi who is going to do john tavaris did a

pretty good job of this but the guy that i remember loving watching on the power play was james van reamstack oh yeah stay in their tip stay in their tip and i feel like underrated toughness like oh yeah he would take a lot of abuse yeah he wouldn't dole it out but he would take a lot of abuse i think that with the combination of those two you could have an opportunity for something pretty lethal and i and i know a lot of people are talking about um well who is going to captain power play one to me i think it'll probably switch i think it's probably going to be john klingberg more than more more often than not but think about who did it last year it was morgan riley who was spectacular in the in the playoffs had a whole home regular season but he was very

injured so it's not really fair and to be honest he's been doing that for five or six years and at least you know since jake gardner left and i wondered i was kind of looking at his minutes and he's up in the 20s if toronto by some fortune got six to eight minutes on the power play which is three or four penalties not outrageous pretty normal they always ran the pp1 for the majority of that it's about a minute and a half right and then you'd see power play two to clean it up a little bit buck 10 buck 20 right at least yeah that's an extra six and a half seven minutes sometimes that morgan riley is playing and i wonder if dividing up that time gives him a little bit of a break gives john klingberg a bit of an opportunity and it allows them both to be better

at what they're best at you know what we always completely lose sight of in the preseason and leaf fans are especially bad at this because basically from the moment the playoffs end we spend the rest of our lives dreading the next one yeah yeah yeah it's the season is 82 games it's 82 games do you know how many games 82 is 82 it is so many remember i think it was last year you were like wayne simmons is never gonna get in the lineup yes he is it's 82 games of course he will it's so many damn games so try john klingberg there yeah get riley a bit of a rest what if it doesn't work fucking put riley back it's 82 games what if that doesn't work guess what you can put them both out there you can put neither of them out there it's 82 games

there's so much time the season before december unless you're 10 games below 500 barely even counts well yeah and and and proof of that is st louis when they won the cup going from last place to stanley cup yes like from january there is the american thanksgiving thing where if you're way out of it by then yes very unlikely yeah yeah you'll make the playoffs like st louis is the exception to the rule they are yes it is not a good strategy to be like all right we're gonna rope a dope 31 teams yeah let's be in last yeah let's be in last no but like as long as you're like i don't think that's gonna make or break the team i don't think either player can make the power play so bad that they're never gonna win um they're gonna be in the fight they're

gonna try shit there this team was so painfully process oriented that it almost seemed like they were reluctant to try things nope we have done the research this is what works that's what we're doing now they're gonna try shit i'm excited for that all right i'm excited for that it looks like it's going to be he's going to be on pp1 to start the season according to luke fox and the picture he tweeted out where matthews marner and nylander tavarez and klingberg are all out there practicing pp1 together but the only counter argument to this um the idea of going with klingberg instead of riley is why are you trying to fix something that wasn't broken do you guys know you guys know where i 100 get it do you guys know where the toronto maple leafs finished last year in power

play percentage second second overall behind the edmondson oilers who were a cheat code you know so So the Leafs were great on the power play, and the first thing they're going to do this season is change it up. Yeah. That's the only counter, which to your point, Steve, it's like, hey, it's 82 games. You can always go back to it if it's not working. But it's worth a shot.

I just don't know why you would start with it if it worked last year. Are there not other parts of the lineup you would tinker with? I guess what I would say there is Spencer Carberry was the guy who ran it, and he's gone, right? So you've got to be, you know, if you've committed to having Guy Boucher as the guy who's going to run your power play. All right, Guy, what do you want?

What do you want to do? Klingberg might have been signed before Guy even got there. So I can't get worked up about a power play that's going to be good by default. Well, I'm just excited about a different weapon on it and a different way of doing it because like it or not,

they had their two or three ways that they were going to do it. And I still think they have those. they have if they were going to score there was going to be two or three ways right i think now they have maybe a couple more options on how to do it which makes them more dangerous and and the whole thing is listen you were second place the way these guys are going to look at it is okay well how do we get to be first sure why not why not why not and and and so i i don't know i have connor mcdavid have connor mcdavid helps but they since that option's off the table yeah i mean i

mean the leafs were at least for a couple more years the leafs were realistic first and the Oilers were actual first. It's like not being allowed to draft Gretzky in fantasy. It's like every F1 car this year. The real first place is second place. Yeah, exactly. I understood that.

You do. Like 2% of the audience go, you know what? We love those. Yeah, but me and Adam, we're sick. 2%? I've seen the numbers for nailing Excuse me. I know it sounds stupid, but I think the reason I'm a fan and the reason I love this team so much is because of the little things. It's because

it's fun to to go i wonder what that would do and and it's kind of neat the uh to to kind of see how that'll go plus if morgan riley was as injured as he was last year probably even the summer was not enough time to necessarily heal it all completely and if even if he's a hundred percent healthy well injuries do happen so it's kind of nice to happen because you're you get there's 82 games yeah and your body gets strained and all those things i don't know i'm like it and I'm excited. So much. I think the thing that everybody was the most excited about, and let's, I think what happens

in Toronto is we get excited about something because it's exciting. And then people go, you're stupid. How come you're excited about the thing that's cool? Did you say yum? Yuck. Yeah, exactly. I am yucking your yum. Often, it's the people that are in Toronto doing it to the other people in Toronto.

Oh, I wish other fan bases would stop chirping the lease. No, no. We do it enough. We do it enough. easton cowan the cowboy easton cowan the beaston uh was great and it was fun and sheldon keith was effusive in his praise after the game talking about uh how he he wanted to to uh to just keep throwing him out there he scored a power play goal he had the breakaway in the first period penalty shot penalty shot oh yeah that's right um really really exciting and the the response to

this is just a a wet fart which is yeah but he's not gonna make the team nobody's saying that nobody's saying that that's oh my god i'm so annoying nobody thinks he's gonna be on on the wing of austin like nobody eventually maybe one day maybe centering a line i don't know but like nobody nobody's we're just saying he had a good preseason he has he has like a less than if he's the best player at camp i would say he still has a less than five percent chance of even playing the nine games before getting sent back yeah and usually the leafs have wanted to and i'm sorry to interrupt you no no it's okay um usually the leafs have wanted to not interrupt their chl players training camps with their chl teams in his case it's the london knights i'm surprised he's not

back already well so this is the thing he would have been but because the game was so good they're going to give him another game to play and it's not because and and the uh yarn croak injury oh that too that's yeah he's the extra body having eastern around he's been good so that's helping and and listen if somebody robertson if somebody performs um give them another shot because it's because you should reward success it doesn't mean listen for everybody that's like he's not gonna make the team we get it we know but wasn't it cool to see a third a first round pick who had to take the longest walk in first round history down the stairs because he was not expecting to go in the first round and we were doing the stream we were like i don't know i don't know the fuck

that is sure know who he is now but but at the end of the day i think my point is it's exciting it's a fun training camp story it's fucking training camp it's also a good thing to have in training camp when the leafs brought nick robertson into the bubble with them which ultimately didn't work but that wasn't his fault um he was exactly what easton cowan is now but in a different environment easton cowan is the pace car okay all right tell me how the the childlike excitement that this kid is playing with you know you got guys who have been in the league for years maybe even over a decade maybe they're playing in their last season mark giordano and this is a kid who can't act like he's been there before because he's never been there before

and he's losing it and he is putting his full body into absolutely everything mind body and soul and sometimes it's just refreshing to be around that to be around someone who wants it so friggin bad just remember why you love it to remember why you love it someone who hasn't even had the opportunity to take it for granted how does that not infect the entire team in a good way mark giordano throwing his is he 40 yet 39 year old body he was the oldest active skater in the nhl last year and he's still playing and he's throwing his skull and brain in front of in the first preseason game his first preseason game mark you're a madman but also in his own little way he's the pace car the the craziest efforts we've seen in this preseason are from

the youngest and the oldest player on this team and that's exciting it's gotta i mean i don't know catch them on one end catch them on the other and hopefully it infects the entire rest of the geo turns 40 on october 3rd wow about a week so it's gonna be 40 you gotta wear your uh your uh joey ferg uh giordano t-shirt oh i do i actually have it don't you i i i got uh a jersey that i would like to wear in st catherine's on friday but i don't know if i'm gonna get it in time oh i hope i i think i'm gonna get it in time and i'm very excited because i don't think anyone's gonna expect i think you're supposed to wear your dangle navy jersey i will over top of this i will reveal it i'll be so toasty we're gonna yeah we're gonna get a redo of that picture in

ottawa no that was the outdoor game picture no that was uh yeah toronto the ottawa one's the uh lanyard one uh oh if you take a picture of me i'm gonna kick your ass because jesse and adam will just rip on me forever mike stevens uh tweeted this out and and this is just to wrap up the easton cowan things he said east easton cowan will not be keeping the puck from his first goal tonight quote it doesn't matter we lost okay how much how much okay just be a fan for a minute forget bringing it how much do you want to run through a wall for this guy no but who why would keep the puck i know it's i know it's practice i i know but still who asked did mike ask him that question no it's the quote i like the quote did mike ask him that question i don't know if mike

asked the question mike quoted the question no you you know how you know how guys say things because they can yeah you know what that feels like like tim stutzel like i took less even though he had nothing to do with actually taking less you know what i mean oh i took less a year ago But you're not yet worth $10 million. I don't think there was ever a scenario where he was keeping the puck. But I don't think anybody in the history of time has kept a preseason puck. No, okay. If you're like a camp invite. No, even then. Maybe. You got other shit to take if you want that. No, I'm talking you got no shot.

Like, you got no shot. This guy's a first-round pick. And he should at least have the attitude, fucking right, I'm going to score a regular season goal in the NHL. Imagine thinking that. Imagine this guy thought that. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Hey, Blandese, grab me that puck.

I don't even know if Blandese is on an NHL deal. Give me that preseason puck because this could be it. I was dropping the first round, but this is it. Come on. If you're somebody that keeps everything like Steve, though. Oh, I would keep it. Steve would have kept it. I would have fucking kept it.

We've seen Steve play hard. Adam needed something from me yesterday, and he's like, hey, I know you keep everything. Do you have that? And I did. Yeah. There you go. He added to me in a half an hour. It was amazing.

No, but I think it's not whether or not he would keep it. It's how he managed that quote. Because so much of that is how you play things in Toronto. Doesn't matter we lost. Who the fuck isn't going to love that? Fucking right. If you're a fan reading that, you're going to love that. Gotta love the cowboy.

And he probably never would have kept it because it's preseason. He knows he's going to score an NHL goal bench. But all the same, I still love it. I don't care. um and i wondered what you guys kind of thought of his uh specifically his skating because you know he people have always kind of given him shit for his perceived lack of foot speed that's so funny i was texting someone about that but he's quick so here's the thing about hockey right top speed is important what's more important is how quickly you can get to top speed because it's a stop stop start sport he's agile so he may not get to the the fastest speed in the league but he gets to his speed faster than a lot of players on the ice or at least it looked that way i i usually don't have a ton of faith in players getting that much better at skating but there's there's so much speed there and also room to improve like you don't you don't get that very often at the pro

level um he went to the nicolai coolman school of kayaking on skates where he he just he just has a death hold on his stick yeah and he shimmies like that in this really weird wide stance it's an inefficient stride so he's quick but it's still inefficient there's there's room uh to grow there here's the question though effort is great is it effective he get he you know what whenever he's in the lineup for the leafs whether he puts up points or doesn't he always gets chances he puts himself in a scoring position he knows how to get there um he can play on your second power play unit you know we need to start learning our our lessons here because last year and the year before i warned that listen there are prospects coming up

throughout the league who may not pan out the way you thought because their development was just fucked robertson had i shot the prospect pyramid yesterday it's going to come out today or tomorrow the big pp jesse i'm surprised people remember that i got a lot of tweets me too i was like sorry pardon because you forget right yeah um uh he scored something i think it was 55 goals in 46 games in the ohl and he had a year left of junior eligibility this guy was a fucking monster and then he's playing pro when he shouldn't be playing pro and he got hurt and he got hurt again and like it screwed up some players development like quentin byfield i think is probably further back than people thought he would be in part because he's kind of blocked up the middle by

the kings but also he got screwed up by uh by all that too so one of the players who really had their development screwed by uh covid and the shutdown and everything was joseph wool he played his university hockey and all right i'm gonna make the jump to pro and everything shuts down and he was probably going to be the starting goaltender for the echl team the echl team didn't play any games because the newfoundland growlers just didn't play and his first go look at his first few years in pro they were terrible and then last year he figured it out so now we're kind of coming out on the other side where players who had their development screwed up are potentially making a comeback because the talent was always there yes you might see this

crop of late bloomers so like i don't think nick robertson forgot how to score goals overnight yeah the injuries can add up and you know potentially stack up against them and didn't look like his shot took a hit after that shoulder it looked pretty good right so I I think he could really come out on the other end of this there's no reason that he can't have a ceiling where he's scoring at least 20 goals a season in the NHL based on his ability I also you know I think so much of this hinges on how William Nylander does at center right which is the story of camp yeah you know it is it's it's everything how the Leafs construct themselves up front is completely contingent on how they feel William Nylander will do at center and you know a Nick

Robertson in a role I almost wonder like a guy like him on riding riding alongside William Nylander and like a Max Domi well Domi's a great setup man and you also get and I remember this from when Kadri and Lupo played together on the third line way back in the day oh man you get favorable you get yeah with frat sanity um you get favorable matchups and and so maybe maybe that's a you know again we don't know where where how the Leafs feel about Williams performance so far but I do think you know I was I was iffy on Robertson making the team out of camp I still feel like it might make sense for him to go to the Marlies for 20 games and just light it up he barely played last year but he definitely looked a lot better than I thought he would and that's

not because i don't think he's talented he's crazy driven he's crazy driven so i think giving up on him would be a mistake i think him asking for a trade uh would be a mistake he didn't play hockey last year that's very bad for hockey players yeah about that you gotta play hockey man um he's gonna play games for the leafs this year he's gonna score i just don't know if it's gonna be out of camp so um the other thing i want to mention guy you brought him up i wanted to know what you guys thought of joseph wall's first preseason game what can you deduce from a preseason game do you care that much no it seemed like a few iffy goals but do you care the leafs were jesse does not care no no yeah glorified practice you guys okay like there's so there's

so little you take away you look at the younger guys and you're like okay can the younger guys hang like eason cowan's such a great thing to see but in terms of a an nhl goaltender like joseph wall taking anything from that i think there's very little the leafs didn't take anything from They basically divided their rosters into NHL and AHL groups. Jones is with the Marlies, and Wohl is with the Leafs. Now, I assume he's probably going to play, I don't know, two, three more games this preseason if it continues. Yeah.

Yeah. Even if you struggle in the preseason, it's not real games. You have to hop into a real game environment to get the taste of the real game. And it's weird because the Leafs have so many preseason games coming up. They have seven more. Five. Five or six, I think. Oh, okay.

Then Walter Brown Arena, which is where Boston U's women's hockey team plays, is $3,800. Okay, that's good. And then New York, we're not sure. It might be in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where they've got 8,000 people at Total Mortgage Arena. Although some games are likely to be played at UBS Arena, where the Islanders play. And then there's also a conversation, this is according to the hockey news, that New York's hockey team could play games in the capital of New York.
