Starting point is 00:00:00 The Steve Dangle Podcast with your host, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! I just want to say that Jesse's finishing off a nice cup of frosted flakes because he doesn't eat it in a bowl. Chalice. Chalice. Chalice. Oh, what? Chalice.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Right, because it's got the double handles, right? Oh, in his beard. Chalice. Just a little bit for later, too. Don't show me what you've chewed, man. No, it's okay. Please don't. Jesse, that looks great.
Starting point is 00:00:38 I don't think Frosted Flakes are meant to be seen after chewed. Just throwing that out there. No, that's not after. It's during. Ah, true. Yeah, it was mid-chew. Yeah. Again, probably not what they were intending,
Starting point is 00:00:49 but I'm just throwing that out there. These are so good. Yeah, well, they're Frosted Flakes. That's sort of the thing, right? They're delicious. i wouldn't even say great some might some might the saying is not they're mediocre adam no it sure isn't steve they're great guys we're starting the show today in the middle of the playoffs with a pretty major trait is it well it's i think it's pretty major it's pretty major
Starting point is 00:01:21 steve yeah you got a four million dollar goaltender going to a team with a 10 million dollar goaltender right okay that's major to me that means that's information to me that's not triple a baseball that's no that's me that's not a player to be named later no no it's a major to be drafted later okay i saw the jays made a trade where they got a guy and the cost was a top 30 prospect in their system that it can't be a thing that's not a it should be the jays acquire whatever his name was for literally any alive person yeah it's kind of how baseball works if you're they also bought a starting pitcher to one uh to one walker i think i hope i'm saying his name right i think they just sent cash it was cash considerations yeah i would
Starting point is 00:02:12 i would much rather have cash than a an organization's 26th ranked friggin outfielder that's pretty high like yeah 26 it's a it's a 25 man roster right so he's on the next squad after in terms of prospects right if you have a prospect roster he's on the main prospect roster of the top 30 i need you to explain the rest of sports baseball wild baseball there's a lot of guys but outside of baseball there's a good chance by the way that that i think 25 of those 30 never see the major leagues too oh at least a really good chance it's just darts you know yeah it just starts you gotta get as many so the montreal canadians i've seen a lot of people clowning on them hold on spending what not that i want not that i want
Starting point is 00:03:02 to interrupt you here but let's say what the trade was shall we can we do that oh sure do you have it because we we haven't done that and i feel like we need to do that yeah just just as a setup and then steve you're off i'm gonna wind you up sure what i for one cannot wait to dedicate half a show to a trade involving a seventh round pick three drafts from now at canadian montreal uh canadians acquired jake allen and a seventh round pick in 2022 holy shit are you excited i am from the blues in exchange for a third and a seventh this year in 2020 and neither of those are Montreal picks so the third round pick is was previously acquired from Washington or sorry and neither of those are um yeah Montreal's so one was Washington's and the other is Chicago's
Starting point is 00:03:50 so they got Jake Allen for Ilya Kovalchuk and wherever they got that Chicago seventh rounder yeah listen there are a lot of people clowning on the Montreal Canadiens for spending so much money on goaltending and there are a lot of Montreal Canadiens fans that are extraordinarily happy because their team got better and they paid very little to do so right and i'm here to tell you you're both right you're both absolutely right they are an absolute clown show for having the goaltending situation that they do and also that was a necessary move i think the fact that it was a necessary move and also a good trade sort of shows you the very unique situation the montreal canadians are explain so jake allen is uh what was it 4.35 million against the cap 4.35 million
Starting point is 00:04:44 against the cap he's only making four this year so you know a little old discount now gary price is a 10.5 million dollar cap hit next year making 15 million dollars in actual cash they also have charlie lingren there in the minors making a guaranteed 750 000 that cap hit is variable the money is not he gets that money so next season in actual dollars if i have this right the montreal canadians are going to be spending 19 million 750 000 on not in not in cap in in money in cap in jesse it's george gillette right he owns no no molson molson owns it yeah in cap jesse they're spending a measly 14.85 or something like that and why do you think it's a good thing no well okay to get a third and a seventh for jake allen's good he had a very
Starting point is 00:05:46 good season he's a good backup i think we discovered he's a little out of his depth as a starter as a backup good stuff paid like a a low-grade starter though that's the problem like four and a half million for your backup is is too much especially in st louis's case but as i saw andrew berkshire point out and just logically he takes starts away from carry price so that you have less wear and tear on carry price protects your investment well the problem is it's a hell of an investment it is so much money to spend on one guy and you're taking games away from him and in order to do that like how many fan bases out here are like yes got a 4.35 million backup yes i don't think anybody is i so they better have i mean it was okay i mean st louis
Starting point is 00:06:48 did just win a cup so it's okay for them like you are you are well within your rights to clown on the leafs if they ever fall outside of the top five in the nhl in offense because of how much there's they're spending a ludicrous amount on offense i get it my argument was always well as long as it's good they at least get their money's worth if the habs do not get top five goaltending next season it's a catastrophe it's a catastrophe they're spending 15 million dollars who's the next closest team in terms of cap expenditure the closest i can think of is florida maybe the bruins florida florida i would think bobrovsky and whoever the hell plays there too so that's like a lot 11 or 12 maybe yeah 11 or 12 million dollars yeah uh i have it here it's bob and chris
Starting point is 00:07:42 dreger dreger like he's this is his first like regular yeah he only makes 850 grand so it's barely it's it's under 11 million it's right and plus 850 and they're cheaping out on their backup goaltending because they've spent 10 million dollars on their starter but they're going to want to spend more on their backup goaltending because they've spent so much on their starter and he's obviously not good enough steve i'm still confused why you think this is a good thing can you not get somebody to do jake allen's job for less than four million dollars this is the problem this is the problem and this is why he costs nothing like yes yes you got a good goalie yes, you gave up very little to get him,
Starting point is 00:08:26 but there is a salary cap. And Montreal is spending $15 million on their goaltend. I'm just saying this, does this not feel like a problem? Like the fact that, oh, we're taking starts away from Carey Price. Is that what you want? Probably. I mean, the thing is, is that even if you have Carey Price starting 50 games, if he's winning you 70% of those games,
Starting point is 00:08:51 and Jake Allen can go, you know, even, you're set. You're going to the playoffs. Of course. And you're a team that doesn't have a lot of offense. I think this may spell the end of Max Domi in Montreal, which we can get to in a little bit because I think that $4 million probably would have been – I mean, I don't know if Max is going to make $4 million, but that seems to be where that cap space has now gone to.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Montreal needs to score goals. But even goaltending doesn't cost $4 million. Not this year. No. No, it shouldn't. Not this year. But again, it also sort of sets the table. Like, it sets the market.
Starting point is 00:09:27 But you're saying, Steve, from what I understand, that teams are going to double down on what they are. So if you are a goaltending-heavy team, you're going all in on that. Like, the Leafs went all in on offense. You can debate how well that worked out for them. But, you know, there are teams that have – like, I mean, Tampa's a team that's all in on offense but plays a structured defense, right?
Starting point is 00:09:48 Is that an identity, though? like an identity holy shit the amount of picks the montreal canadians have by the way a lot oh my god so they got some capital see well yeah they got some capital and they're dying to spend it so good for them they should they should be spending it and to be fair i've also talked about the fact that montreal has had cap space these past few years why aren't you using it check this out 2020 they have their own first their own second chicago's second st louis's second their own third their own fourth the ducks fourth the jets fourth their own fifth the panthers fifth their own sixth wow they skimped out they don't have their own seventh but they do have the senator seventh
Starting point is 00:10:29 which is better 2021 down and one of those picks too if they won a few sevens sure yeah 2021 they got their own first their own second their own third chicago's third their own fourth the blues fourth the vegas's fourth their own fifth the sense fifth philly's fifth wow holy shit that's unbelievable so like listen it's again it's not i think it is a good trade in a bad situation at the same time um like we talked about we talked about um the flames and their lack of identity and they needed we talked about them being a defense first team that needs a goaltender right the the habs are not the flames like we we talked about defense uh teams with defense as their identity they're not the stars they're not the islanders they're not the uh who's another defense
Starting point is 00:11:25 first team i just had them they're not the stars they're not the islanders they're not even really the blue jackets like hurricanes hurt well the hurricanes are just good i think yeah i think they're an all-arounder but like i'm looking at their d uh weber absolutely petrie absolutely and then you go down man ben charot and brett kulak and like romanoff better be awesome is all i'm saying in victor met a lot of eggs in that basket and good for them i mean when like and like i i know i talked about the fact that uh they have all this cap space why don't they use it I really I'm not sure how much they're going to have when this is all said and done just looking at their team like Domi Domi it's such an interesting situation they're gonna have
Starting point is 00:12:14 flexibility they buried some this year they got some retained salary I think a couple buyouts I don't know I again I just find myself looking at the Montreal Canadiens what are you goaltending is not, it's not an identity, right? Your, your identity cannot be, we get bailed out every game. Your identity needs to be, we're tough to score on. Goaltending makes you tough to score on, but you got to help your goalie out. You got to help your goalie out. You got to be able to transition the puck out.
Starting point is 00:12:45 You got to be able to smush the other team in the corner. You got to be able to forecheck. You got to be able to carry it in. You got to be able to shoot. You got to have a power play. Like, I'm describing what a lot of other teams have. And I've said that I like the way the Montreal Canadiens play. I like that they're feisty. I think that's a good identity to have. They just – is their identity not just hardworking underachievers
Starting point is 00:13:13 who sort of kind of rely on their goalie? Yeah, I mean, there's – like, I know that they quote-unquote made the playoffs this year, and they did beat Pittsburgh. Sure. But let's not pretend that that would have happened. it would not have happened. No, they were not going to make the playoffs. Right.
Starting point is 00:13:28 They did. They did. But they were not going to. You can't not give them credit for that. Yeah, I can. I'll give them credit for it. Then you can't knock the Leafs for losing. Oh, yeah, I can.
Starting point is 00:13:41 The Leafs should have won. It's the same thing. It's the end result. Right. But what I'm saying, Jesse, is that the Leafs should have absolutely shit-kicked the Columbus Blue Jackets. Yeah, but they didn't.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Exactly. And that's a problem. And should they have if they were the – if it was seven versus eight? I think they should have, absolutely. They're just a shy team right now. Let's be honest. The Blue Jackets' identity beat the Leafs' identity. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:07 To me, I'm looking at this and I'm going, your identity is – Goaltending. Carey Price. You're building around the king. You got to think, like, how does Carey Price feel like on a day like today? How do you think he feels about – well, okay, so some of the load's been taken off me. and their acquisition cost was almost nothing.
Starting point is 00:14:26 But does Carey Price feel – not that he would feel bad, but is he feeling like there'll be less pressure? Because even if he's starting less, that doesn't mean there's less pressure. It just means that he's starting less. The games that he's going to be in on are still going to be full of pressure because it's going to be him every night. Every time he puts on his pads, it's going to be him. I had heard Roberto Luongo was pissed the Panthers went out and got Reimer.
Starting point is 00:14:52 the starters want to start right but it's it's not up to carry like if you're worried about feelings mark bergevin is right to ignore carrie price's feelings that guy is locked up we need you healthy which is true that team will only go as far as carrie price carries them but your identity they need more if there are corresponding moves that go with this like we had just heard like we okay we had heard max domey switching agents you know that's going to be an interesting situation we had heard that montreal may make a pitch for taylor hall what what are you what are you it's it's a great trade to me in a horrible situation you know what i mean then it's not a good trade that doesn't maybe it's not a good trade i don't
Starting point is 00:15:45 have both like no but if you have if you have cap space and you have picks they use it they don't have the cap space anymore because they got it to get the goalie i am trying to figure out what you are hearing is me trying to figure out both sides you're defending both sides of the trade i'm trying to figure out what they're doing like what what are they doing going ahead next day are they trading kerry price no that'd be interesting it'd make more sense can you imagine are they trading kerry price that would make more sense than acquiring more money at the position where you're already strong instead of money to strengthen up where you're not strong and just and build around him that way in terms of defense and offense and scoring more so kerry price doesn't
Starting point is 00:16:31 have to do as much work maybe if you're if you're a better team he can take more days off and you can throw in a different goalie in there sometimes but it doesn't make sense to acquire at the same position and then leave the rest of your team still weak if it's going to take away money from making the rest of the team better like they're like they got some good young players like maybe that's the plan man i don't know air price going on the market guys adam no but well does he have an he has a no movement right sure yeah his no movement is the 10.5 million dollar cap it yeah but what are the uh the stipulations on the no move holy shit so boys gary price's signing bonus this year oh no oh okay okay it's still pretty big
Starting point is 00:17:28 so this the first two years of his contract the structure is 13 million signing bonus 2 million base that's the first two years so in the first two years of his deal he was paid uh 30 million dollars this year though it's still pretty goddamn big uh it's an eight million seven hundred fifty thousand dollar signing bonus and a one million dollar base salary and again just the names that we've gone through over the past two episodes can everyone stop acting like the leafs uh cornered the market on goofy contracts with heavy signing bonuses this is egregious 70 million dollars worth of his contract his signing bonus 14 is you know it's you know what's crazy about his contract to the way it's structured is it doesn't make it easier to trade him later on because there are
Starting point is 00:18:19 a lot of teams that would still struggle with a seven million dollar signing bonus two years in a row which in 22 23 and 23 24 they're going to be paying yeah like this is so the whole thing with the signing bonuses is that it's supposed to eat up most of the contract at the beginning so it makes the contract more movable at the end because the real dollars go down and the real dollars in this case do go down they're half of what they would be but this is also when he's older so it's a very interesting structure now listen do i think he's going on the market probably not uh and i and for anybody that's going to tweet me or leave a comment about how well he's got a no movement clause like no one with a no movement clause has ever moved yeah like most people if the team asks
Starting point is 00:19:00 them to wave it they're like okay you don't want me yeah i'll get out of here yeah most people don't They want to be where people don't want them to be. Right. If they want to trade him. He doesn't have enough. He's a no-movement class. Yeah. What is that?
Starting point is 00:19:11 What is that? It's just a choice about what team you get to go to, basically. Who's taking that contract right now? Like, who can afford that right now? I don't know. I don't know that. You can make room. Every team can afford anybody if they want.
Starting point is 00:19:24 You can ship guys out. It's the same argument you were making last week, Adam, with Pechangelo. People are like, well, there's no cap room. Trade a guy. Well, and that's what they did. This is a win for the blues. Petrangelo is going to be a blue now. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:19:37 It's a lot more likely. If you want Carey Price, you can move somebody to get Carey Price. You're telling me you can't find a taker for Marco Scandella at $3 or $4 million or whatever? There you go. There's your Petrangelo money. You lost Allen and Scandella. You're fine.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Here's what it is. They're protecting Carey Price as an asset, which is a good idea. The $10.5 million cap hit, that's in the past. They've already done that. it is what it is what this tells me just looking at the roster is they really really value their young talent and they're gonna have a lot of rookies and sophomores next year they do have a good system right i think they do i'm pretty bullish on it um you know people goof on cole caulfield he's been trending every day for some reason uh ryan paling nick suzuki obviously we
Starting point is 00:20:29 still have to throw in there after an amazing rookie season we didn't see much of alexander romanov um you know there's other guys in their system to kale flurry um cockney emmy is listed as a non-roster forward on the habs uh which injury i don't i don't know i don't know um but and they still have caden primo in their system like maybe the plan is because he ended up having to play a couple games this year and keith kincaid wasn't a good option maybe the plan is have alan play um until caden primo is fully ready which is a good idea but again like what what are you what are you outside of your goaltending we have good goalies is not an identity we're hard to score on as an identity and i know they sound mutually they're not i know they sound
Starting point is 00:21:23 the same they're not they're not the same they're not the same clearly not the same so let me ask you this montreal goes into the regular season which with much the same roster and carrie price wins 70 of his games they make the yoffs they do you know they're in the yoffs i do make the ops that doesn't count that they made it this year though no it does count it's just no it doesn't count Chicago made it Chicago made it Chicago didn't make the playoffs Montreal and Chicago fans should be thrilled that they got as far as they did but don't any of you pretend that you thought your teams were going you didn't think that nobody did no they were I remember the day the
Starting point is 00:22:14 format was announced they were mad they were mad that they blew a chance at um the Canadians were even mad oh my god Lafreniere there were there were reports out of Montreal that certain players were like no I don't want to play yeah they didn't want to go and I'm sure there were tons of players on teams that were outside the playoffs thinking oh I'm not going to have to do this and now and then they did you know I don't blame them for not wanting to go not questioning their commitment to the game but it's a it's a thing that happened it's a weird part of a weird season so whatever um a weird season but let's talk about st louis's aspect on this because i think that's really what's you know that to me there's a story there and the story is alex petrangelo you know
Starting point is 00:22:56 the the cap hit apparently is going to be like 8.5 to 9 million dollars which given how good he is that's a hell of a that's a steal now they do have some um uh scandela's got his uh his extension kicking in which to me i i'm surprised actually like i know he's a he's a good player uh But it was an interesting extension. It goes from 2 to 3.275 next year for the next four years, and he's 30 years old. It's an interesting contract that they signed. I know that Vince Dunn needs to be re-signed.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Jacob De La Rose is an RFA. I'm not really sure, you know, what he makes, but these are things that sort of kind of pop up. Adam, what I'm looking at is if you look at their goalies on CapFriendly, they have one. Yeah. And I'm looking at their non-roster goalies, and there's i don't see an answer there there's joel hoffer who just played junior this year
Starting point is 00:23:48 there's evan fitzpatrick who played in the echl and there's philly uso who is 25 and had a pretty ho-hum ahl season now the blues maybe go well we found jordan binnington out of nowhere but well and i don't know if you can count on lightning striking there twice however they did just set the goaltending market did they not the goaltending market is a third and a seventh for a did they not three million dollar backup goalie that's that's gonna be the starting point for everybody now that's how it works how many goalies out there are like are in the situation jake allen is in he's a he's a very expensive maybe one a there's there is a lot of very expensive maybe one a's open right now yeah let's roll this the athletic put this together actually
Starting point is 00:24:39 and this is a really good it's a good article it has to do with the least but i also think it's important that because everything has to do with toronto um let's let's be honest here the the leafs are in the market for a goaltender so the question is if you are going to replace frederick anderson in goal who do you have well who's a free agent on anaheim you got ryan miller trade option darcy kemper calgary's got uh cam talbot's a free agent cory crop michael newworth uh corpus salo is a trade option apparently he might be available who dobin in uh dallas is a free agent koskinen and edmonton apparently is up for potentially trade so they might lose smith and koskinen which is weird thomas grice is a free agent um you've got uh um you've got uh matt
Starting point is 00:25:24 murray in pittsburgh freddie anderson's a potential trade um you've got markstrom in vancouver who is not resigned and thatcher demko had a really good game last night and depending upon and this isn't understood this is a story developing if thatcher demko stays in that net and markstrom's not ready to play and they go far in the playoffs if you're vancouver is that where you're spending your cap they're losing next game and then you've got flurry who's a trade-off that was an unreal it was 43 to 17 the shots yeah yeah their identity in that game was our goalies better yeah yes yes you can't do that maybe i'm wrong both both vegas goalies could be on the move flurry might want to get traded uh flurry's acting like he wants to get traded robin lennar's a free
Starting point is 00:26:09 agent although vegas definitely wants to hang on to him uh you know the caps have samson off so holpe is probably going to be traded and actually he's a free agent so you know there's a lot of goalies guys there's a lot of 1a 1b goalies that i just mentioned there that are either free agents or their trade possibilities and if there's that many that means that the market's low and we've just seen jake allen move now jake allen is um debatable as your starter no question however uh by some metrics he's been better than freddie anderson the last couple seasons let me walk you through jake allen because i was amazed how many people today said jake allen's a great goalie like they just began watching this year um he played five games
Starting point is 00:26:52 these playoffs had a 935 that's spectacular he played 24 games this season had a 927 that's spectacular the previous two seasons he was a 905 and 46 and a 906 and 59 like we're just gonna those didn't happen right those didn't happen jake allen yeah like oh i think they happened i think that's why it cost nothing to get them The Blues sold high. They sold high, big time. Sure. They cleared cap space, which is what they need to do.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Now, if he's playing in the 24 games range and gives you those sorts of numbers, if you're the Montreal Canadiens, you probably have the best goaltending tandem in the league. But if he's playing 24 games, that's an awful lot of money to pay for your insurance policy when he's just playing as much as the guys you had who are a lot cheaper he's just better i don't know i don't know it is he doesn't know mark
Starting point is 00:27:52 bergevin is the king of winning a trade that is still confusing when i look at the whole team when was his last true defeat in a trade true defeat like it feels like he's done really well in recent years and the habs are still what they are like they i think he lost the he didn't lose a trade but when they lost radulov and and markov in that offseason that was pretty devastating but it was there were trades that was years ago like i'm i'm looking okay i mean even the gouch trade was you know that was a good trade really good trade gouch dome yep i mean good trade don't mean it's 70 points that year good trade uh they remember they acquired scandela and then they traded them for a second and a fourth um like i'm trying to i'm looking for a real stinker here
Starting point is 00:28:45 they got a second a seventh and a third for andrew shaw yeah like they just find ways to get cap space and picks in every freaking trade which is extremely good and then what are you when you hit the ice what are you and okay this year counts let's get that out of the way this year counts sure but next year when you're playing 82 again are you going to be able to replicate that are you going to be able to catch the penguins laying a laying a total egg over five games or whatever i think it was only four and then you know they played the flyers well in the first round they were fun to watch fun team they were super fun to watch and if they go as young as i think they're gonna have to they'll
Starting point is 00:29:36 be fun to watch i'm just i'm befuddled i'm befuddled looking at the haps montreal is always a story they're always a story and that is because mark bergevin is their general manager and just when you think things are calming down in montreal uh they get crazy um did you want to move on to domi because there's another trade on this trade list that to me sort of signifies what's going to happen go ahead steve well max patch already the writing really appeared to be on the wall uh so in montreal correct in montreal yes uh this was september 10th 2018 we're getting around that time should we uh should we talk about some sellies before we get to don't uh yeah i guess we should talk sure all right that's a good tease you're right let's do some sellies
Starting point is 00:30:22 i was waiting for the i thought you were gonna no okay we're not we're not gonna show you do Do you need Tony? He needs some encouragement, Jesse. That calls for some frosted flakes. Sure does, Tony. It absolutely does. So we're going back to Selly's past. Let's shout out another amazing Selly of NHL past in the playoffs,
Starting point is 00:30:49 Steven Dangle. Steve. Well, okay. Watch your tone there, Tone. That's a little loud for this time. All right. Excuse me there, Tone. Love it very much.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Now, are we doing strictly playoffs or can it be a tournament? Right? Something's on the line. What do you mean? Well, you got me thinking about Max Domi. And so you got me thinking about iconic Max Domi moments. And if we're talking about the playoffs, well, you know, not all that much to choose from.
Starting point is 00:31:27 but i seem to remember when this kid uh captured the hearts of all of canada it was beyond the fact i the name recognition helps sure he was on team canada people are gonna love you he's playing in toronto as ty domey's son people are gonna love you but the energy that he brought to the 2015 world junior hockey championship with team canada everyone just fell in love with them and everyone was totally on the max domi hype train and when he i he banged in a goal can't remember who it was from i want to say nick patan because nick patan was hot as a pistol in those playoffs domi points right at him and goes ah i you i can't hear you but you can hear me i just shook my headphones off When he stuck out his tongue and he shook his head like that,
Starting point is 00:32:25 everyone was just like, all right, that's it. I love this guy. And he's going to be something. And now look at him. Several years into his NHL career, and he's about to make a big old bunch of money. So that kiss, that Gene Simmons thing that he did, I like that. That's a reason for a cereal celly.
Starting point is 00:32:45 You're right. You're right, Tone. You're absolutely right. Thank you for that, Steve. Now, the big old bunch of money you talk about, Steve. First off, he's an RFA. Second, he's on a team that potentially, you know, well, they just brought in $4.5 million,
Starting point is 00:32:59 so they probably have less money to spend than they did before. Are the Montreal Canadiens the team to give him that money? We heard news earlier this week that Max had switched agents. His agent, Pat Brisson, who are former agent, good friends with Marc Bergevin, had been fired. New agent, Darren Ferris. mitch marner's agent mitch marner's agents now this is very interesting because max domi is not going into these negotiations with what mitch marner had um
Starting point is 00:33:36 he's 25 marner i believe is 22 domi was coming off a career year domi's career year is a year behind him he went from 36 or sorry he went from 38 to 45 points to 72 to 44 and 71 games doesn't have a great relationship with claude julian we know that apparently doesn't have a great relationship with claude julian 10 playoff games three assists that's it so he's not going in there with the same fire and i do find it very funny that it was this was announced yesterday and Mark Bergevin makes a deal to acquire over $4 million in cap space the very next day. Just eats it up.
Starting point is 00:34:20 You know, the Blues, they free up the space, and what do we automatically think? Petrangelo. Petrangelo. They're about to fill that space with one of their key free agents. No, no one's really connected those dots with Montreal. Montreal's not going to be as tight, but I think Bergevin is sending a clear message.
Starting point is 00:34:41 based on their negotiations that i assume they've had so far this is what we've got for you max this is what we got for you and if you look at his track record and i started to go through this trade a minute ago he'll move you he doesn't care he'll move you for value max patch already the writing was on the wall and what did they get for him thomas tatar who was a total cap dump and turned into a significant player on their roster nick suzuki who at the time former first round pick and a prospect and is now a significant part of the roster and a second round pick from 2019 uh we'll see how that goes actually it looks like it was given to columbus so there was probably another move uh that was involved in there mark burgeman oh i should do
Starting point is 00:35:30 a trade tree god this is why god they're so difficult to do especially to do on the spot anyway point being mark bergevin is a fidgety boy and uh he is not there will as much as i made fun of it yesterday and a lot of leaf fans made fun of it yesterday oh you know darren ferris get used to that montreal canadiens fans it's gonna be a fun conversation no it's not bergevin will just trade him either he'll take the money amount you know he'll take the dollar amount and then darren ferris will be like yeah well he's gonna go play in zurich and then burge van goes all right bet and he'll deal him for what i assume will be a decent package and he'll acquire value and at the end of year evaluation no matter what he'll be able to say we have more value than we
Starting point is 00:36:27 did the year before I don't know I think I think that's a team that could at this point that your prospects are already good you have such a ridiculous amount of picks I I think it's time for Mark Bergevin to well I was thinking I want to see what he can do with it I was thinking about that and I wondered if Max Domi doesn't make a lot of sense in Edmonton and the reason I say that is they're looking for a third line center who's going to be relatively low cost. Now, obviously, you've got extremely expensive first two lines, but they're worth it.
Starting point is 00:37:03 Max Domi's got bite to his game. He has scored 70 points. You can put him on the power play. He can play the wing on the power play, which would be important. He's a good skater. Obviously, he can make some plays. And that's a guy that, I mean, I even,
Starting point is 00:37:18 I hesitate to say this because, you know, it's always about Toronto, but is that not somewhat the type of player that the Leafs are looking for? A guy with a little bit of bite to the game? It is. But I think Edmonton's looking harder for that. I saw an article today that teams like Edmonton
Starting point is 00:37:36 should be looking at guys like Kyle Turris with reduced salaries. Kyle Turris at $3 million, and it makes sense. But if Max is going to come in around $3 or $4 million, does he make sense in Edmonton? It makes more sense in Edmonton than Toronto, I think. The Leafs, plus, you know, there's something about being Ty Domi's kid in Toronto. I don't know. I just feel like everyone will expect him to be Ty.
Starting point is 00:38:02 The Oilers would have half the 2015 Team Canada team. Yeah, they would, wouldn't they? McDavid, Domi, I think Darnell Nurse was on that team as well. Yep. Like, again, you know, you talk about the Leafs with the snarl. They need defense a thousand times more than they need that. I think they need to get the snarl on defense. That's where it needs to come from.
Starting point is 00:38:26 The Oilers, on the other hand, like, again... They've got snarl on defense in Edmonton. They've got snarl on defense in Edmonton, but what we talked about, your identity can't be... It can't just be a goalie, or it can't just be the two-headed monster. They were good this year because people contributed besides the two-headed monster.
Starting point is 00:38:48 If you get Max Domi, add it to that group, like all of a sudden like you're adding guys like Tyler Ennis and Andreas Athanasiou at the deadline and yeah those are deadline moves and they sure up they sure up your depth and they're good I supported them I thought they were good moves Max Domi okay all right now we're talking now we're talking because not only is Edmonton an improved offensive team whether it's the whether it's coming from the uh the offense or it's in their zone you're gonna have a miserable time playing against
Starting point is 00:39:24 the Oilers they're gonna beat you up and you're gonna be too tired to chase Connor McDavid around all night it's not gonna be a good time could be a good fit again the issue is money but if they can find a way isn't it always and you have to wonder if a guy like Max Domi who's an RFA this year he signed a one or two I don't know how many uh years he's got left because I know I know when he's 25 now he's played six seasons so it's your seventh season that you become a ufa right uh seven or after uh i think it's 26 a certain amount after 26 so even if you could sell max and and darren ferris on a lower cost deal in edmonton first season for one season hey that's an interesting idea like who doesn't want to play with conor mcdavid at least once
Starting point is 00:40:09 yeah man there's gonna be some really weird one-year deals we're gonna see situations like some kids may be too young to remember this but there was a an off season one off season where the already pretty stacked colorado avalanche added tamu solani and paul korea for like a combined three million bucks or something stupid like that now they didn't end up winning the cup but damn it was fun to watch it made for a fun day yeah it made for a fun day and if it sounds like we're always dumping on the cap and and we're talking about how the trade deadline's boring like i've gotten to work the last few trade deadlines i don't think that they really got boring for a while i think they did ask
Starting point is 00:40:53 i think the best couple yeah they've gotten better but oh i used i loved skipping school and watching keith kachuk get traded for 19 firsts yeah it was the best oh it was the best i miss it i miss it i don't remember where i was well we're gonna see a lot of that this offseason i think it's where you're going where there's gonna be some crazy stuff so i think to me instantly as soon as i heard max domi you know potentially out in montreal it was the montreal gazette that was reporting this um man edmonton would be great edmonton would be really the road in calgary would also make sense for domi a bit if they could move some
Starting point is 00:41:31 money around because their their top two centers are monaghan and backland right if you get somebody like domey in there you get a little more stable at at center you get a more bona fide center okay this is the guy we're gonna run with instead of those two and uh they'd have to move money around like i said but it could definitely be a trade option i think you can afford it too if you're montreal or if you're calgary because they're tj brody and travis hammock are up you've got uh rasmus anderson who i think is ready to step up and step in in a major role um he's my second favorite Rasmus in the league by the way um but you know there's there is a there's definitely um Calgary makes a lot of sense too it's weird how they mirror each other well what about
Starting point is 00:42:15 and whenever we think well Edmonton but what about Calgary too um a guy like Max Domi on a team where he doesn't have to be the star like Montreal when they brought him in they're like you're the first line center now you know what I mean and it was sort of and John like what they did to jonathan druan too um i think it makes a lot of sense now jonathan druan's an interesting case because you have to wonder if my if montreal is doing a full roster flip which who knows what mark bergman's thinking i really i never know jonathan druan when he's on he's great when he's not he disappears he's unnoticeable did he lose a trade with sergachev we're talking about trades that one yes yeah that was years ago years ago still a trade lost yeah i mean i think
Starting point is 00:43:04 surrogate is awesome uh boy could they know he had he had a run where we were like this guy's an idiot and and i think it's part of the reason it's part of the reason we thought the galchenyuk for domi trade sucked so bad because bergevin had this run where we were just like on paper we're like what the what are you doing what are you doing there was the druin sergachev one and there was suban and weber and if i'm not mistaken it was in a pretty short period of time and then he did that and we're like are you all right is this guy gonna be okay and he hasn't done much losing since well not in the trade market anyway 23rd in the league is not great right right this is the this is the dichotomy of mark bergevin dichotomy of this season 23rd in the league and
Starting point is 00:43:50 in the first round of the playoffs and my biggest criticism of him year in year out like i'll give him props on his deals and drafting well and always having picks i'm always like bro you're the montreal canadians spend your cap space and here they are spending it on jake allen and i'm like i don't know this trade might suck and then who's your number one center when you trade domi philip dono dono it's dono dono and then i think nick suzuki takes number two suzuki steals steals that job is that what you're confident with philip absolutely not yeah no i mean i think these playoffs showed that that as a one two is manageable they suzuki's suzuki to be a number two center in the nhl like that guy was on the ice when the montreal canadians were down a goal
Starting point is 00:44:42 in an elimination game to Philly. Nick Suzuki was on the ice to tie the game. That's what this organization thinks of him. Right? Is this the most we've ever talked about the Habs since you got traded? I don't think so. You guys were going to have a debate once about whether the Habs were good or not. Bessie did his homework and you didn't.
Starting point is 00:45:03 One of the major – that was by the end of the Carlisle era where the Leafs were so bad we couldn't even talk about them. That was at your apartment. Yeah. that was that was that was the year of the podcast yeah uh first jesse year first jesse year and that was going to be jesse's kind of major step forward into the light you know what i mean he'd been uh he'd been this quiet guy and how'd i do how'd i do with it how'd i do with it jesse won weirdly uh so i think the reality here is there's a lot there's montreal all of a sudden
Starting point is 00:45:34 has become an extremely intriguing story and we didn't expect them to be they always are but i think in this particular case this is perplexing there is something weird great for st louis great for their fans petrangelo is going to stay he's going to stay and if you think that they can't find a taker for someone like i don't know like i said scandela you can have fault you can have pareko they don't need to trade those guys um i think that you there are other guys you sacrifice with a guy like uh petrangelo and obviously we've seen it with jake allen they're going to be able to find a low cost super cheap backup goaltender they're going to take their chances with that Jordan Bennington's going to get a lot of play.
Starting point is 00:46:11 But they've got such strong defense that you feel like maybe St. Louis doesn't worry too much about the backup as much as other teams do because they've got strong defense and a good structure. We'll see. Now, I do want to move on to a couple of games that happened last night, starting with Vegas and Vancouver. Thatcher Demko coming in and a 42 save. 42 save.
Starting point is 00:46:35 I don't even know what the performance. Masterpiece. thatcher demko coming out party thatcher demko i mean and we've known he's good we've known that this is good but to do this after you know jake markstrom has done what he's done you know step it talk about a pressure void right markstrom's unfit to play and obviously he looked in game three a little bit they said unfocused but i want you know you got to wonder when someone when a goalie's unfocused is it like a hip or a groin or whatever else it could be distracted and he said yeah or he could just be freaking fried man he could you could be
Starting point is 00:47:08 exhausted at this point it's a lot uh thatcher demko came in and stole the show and that really that that vegas attack which is unrelenting all the time was utterly stopped like except for that one goal there's like it's crazy uh from sportsnet stats thatcher demko is the first rookie goalie to win his NHL playoff debut when his team was facing elimination since Jose Teodoro of the Montreal Canadiens in 1997. Wow. This hasn't happened since 1997. Not just that he won it, that he had 42 of 43 to win it as a rookie.
Starting point is 00:47:49 That is dumb. Now, we're also – with goalies, it's way easier to move the goalposts for rookie. like thatcher demko is like a uh andrew raycroft rookie andrew raycroft had played like what will the least trade for him i want well who's their best goalie prospect that one guys um i'm gonna pause you or steve you keep going and i don't want to pause you but my dogs are outside and it appears there's a thunderstorm on the horizon outside my window and i just want to pull them in they love being outside and i'm looking at it and it's about to let's pause okay give me one sec guys i'm really sorry i just don't
Starting point is 00:48:26 one then we get soaked hang on steve pick us up where we were going i'm sorry the dogs are inside safely oh that's good i was just saying thatcher demko is a rookie in the same way that andrew raycroft is a rookie or was a rookie when he won the calder like he played 27 games this year yes that in his rookie season but he played nine the year before he had an nhl game the year before that like this happens with goalies matt murray won a stanley cup and then came back the next season and was a rookie and was a rookie tony esposito same thing demko is also 24 and uh in a couple months won't even be eligible uh even if he hadn't played this season because he'll be 25 right and all that so i mean listen it's way too early for this storyline but if demko is the guy
Starting point is 00:49:16 like let's say demko let's say thatcher demko steals this series from feels like the cup because vegas really because vegas should be in the final vegas is that hundred percent hundred percent and that's no disrespect to vancouver no no of course i don't think any vancouver fans gonna be like hey what are you talking about we're clearly better yeah we know nhl team in the playoffs to 17 shots that alone defensively is enough to be like okay you're the best team in the league right now right now they're an amazing hockey club yeah but if they can't beat thatcher demco holy moly like that's the and and and if i'm vancouver and i've got cap wrapped up in players that i perhaps shouldn't that's an easy one you've got who else is there i think it's an
Starting point is 00:50:05 easy one if that's your dpietro is uh pietro and if you need a veteran goalie in there there's going to be one on the market low cost and they also have a guy who they drafted in the sixth round last year like they obviously they have plans for the future uh in goaltending and the writing does sort of appear to be on the wall uh for jacob markstrom canucks fans always get very upset when i say jacob um di pietro he played in utica he was okay this year i don't know they're not going to go with a demco di pietro tandem next year well they can say then they can find someone low cost yes what's james cost you that's a good tandem steve's undying love is what it costs yeah it's true but like that too you know where james reimer spends his off seasons where
Starting point is 00:51:00 bc well there you go and and at three million bucks it's not too much it's it saves you a little bit of cash um and he's also got the best attitude in the world that's the one thing about So, you know, James is going to be – he'd be the kind of guy that would steal you a few games and would also be very encouraging to a player that was clearly the next guy. And also, he's beautiful. That too. That too.
Starting point is 00:51:22 Beautiful man. Yeah. Beautiful man. Also. Also, let's talk about the Philadelphia Flyers. Why? They stave off elimination. I really hate making picks because every time I make picks,
Starting point is 00:51:36 I don't pick the New York Islanders, and I'm really regretting it. This is why I picked them. The Flyers are able to pull out a win in overtime, dramatic fashion, to stay in this series. They still need to win two more to win it. Do the Flyers win this series? Because rolling in, you thought they should. Well, I also just thought, heading in,
Starting point is 00:52:05 that the Flyers were the best team. Just the way they played in the warm-up, the way they played uh heading into the postponement and then i don't know they just sort of were not very good against montreal and like watching their games you do you did have to give montreal credit obviously and carrie price robbed them blind a few times yep but it it didn't feel like not wanting to give montreal credit it felt like philly was not playing that well and looking at the islanders it's it's been hilarious looking down at my phone and going oh one nothing islanders well that game's over and constantly being right you know about that
Starting point is 00:52:47 um and then it's the islanders storming back and the flyers blowing a lead everyone forgets they blew a two goal lead to win that game in overtime but if the flyers have found their offense yeah this series could go seven man yeah the series could go seven they're i've thought the whole time they were better than how they've been playing sometimes i will see i'm excited for the next islanders flyers game i think this is going to be this is going to be a really interesting match um and uh i i mean it's two really good head coaches right i know i know uh vancouver fans got tired of him i know rangers fans got tired of him but show me a place where alan vignot hasn't won well everywhere but show me a place where he
Starting point is 00:53:37 hasn't gone deep accumulated huge w's like he you just he's like bruce budrow in the sense that he hasn't won the cup always always in there can i offer a suggestion sure alan vignot spends 20 hours a day working on his craft. What of the other four there, Alain? What of the other four? Is that what he said, though? Did he say he said 20 hours a day? Yeah. Oh, you gotta go to sleep.
Starting point is 00:54:01 He doesn't sleep? Oh, he doesn't. Gotta go to sleep. Sleeps four hours a day? I know there are people that do that. Yeah, Vince McMahon, allegedly. That's like three hours a day. Yeah, and you're a lunatic. Can we shout out Brock Nelson, too, who scored a six
Starting point is 00:54:17 goal in the playoffs? Crazy, isn't it? yeah and you know it's good to see guys like uh matt barzell really kind of because there was there were islanders fans that were messaging me going geez like because he didn't have the season that i think he maybe hoped to have in the regular season right you get bars all going peugeot was a great pickup man wow real expensive but real expensive good what they needed what they needed and and steve to to your point earlier does he not fit their identity perfectly he see what's interesting about him is he's a bit of a unicorn um i saw this really interesting chart um for um basically the structure of the islanders attack and it's like everything goes through
Starting point is 00:55:06 barzell and that may be part of the reason why they lost in this game because i was looking I remember that chart when I saw Sean Couturier go down for the Flyers and Matt Barzal go down for the Islanders two devastating losses you got Couturier who's like a selkie candidate and Barzal though I think is even more
Starting point is 00:55:27 valuable to the Islanders than Couturier is to the Flyers because offensively he does everything for them even if it doesn't show up in his own production he's really good he's not he fits their fu identity he's definitely got the fu in him but him as a player i feel like he's a
Starting point is 00:55:48 bit of a unicorn on that roster he's he's uh he's an extreme finesse player with a bunch of just battering rams around him i looked at that last game and i really thought it just could have gone either way like it's an overtime hockey yeah it's a coin flip at the end of the day right and there were a couple calls that could have gone either way to get some penalties there too and see if you're talking about the team running through barzal uh it seemed like for this playoffs it's just bail josh bailey has been on every single play he's got 13 assists in 14 games like he's just every game josh bailey is going to be in on something this isn't just i'm a big fan of the islanders right now and i think josh they'll take one of the next two and maybe have a run to the
Starting point is 00:56:33 cup which josh bailey is part of what is quickly becoming to me one of the most fascinating drafts um why is that the 2008 draft so i was gonna talk about this later today on um on on my show that i got debuting on uh sportsnet's youtube and facebook channel but alex okay do you want this guy on your team or would you draft this guy top 10 Zach Bogosian probably not no who else is in the draft
Starting point is 00:57:06 Stephen Samkos, Drew Dowdy, Alex Petrangelo he was highly touted though boy he was extremely highly touted 61 points in 60 games in his draft year Luke Shen would you draft him top 10 going in
Starting point is 00:57:24 yeah no you wouldn't like no you bloody wouldn't going into the draft luke no you wouldn't name i'm so i'm looking at it in 50 this is his draft here 57 games seven goals 21 assists 28 points maybe he's a defenseman but so what like you're getting drafted you're gonna go high you're not gonna go fifth the hell you're not gonna go fifth i don't care how big you are and then josh bailey went ninth and the problem with josh bailey wasn't that his numbers sucked his numbers were otherworldly he uh had 96 points in 67 games i believe playing with oh no he was on the windsor
Starting point is 00:58:05 spitfires no that was a very good team so but the problem was he comes right into the nhl and he was not otherworldly and he hasn't really been otherworldly he had the 170 point season in 17 and that's where he got the extension right him and Tavares tore it up right but this guy dude he's played 865 NHL games and has put up nearly 500 points not everyone gets to do that with their career and what I was tweeting the other day Luke Shen bust right total bust shouldn't gone fifth 759 games played he was killing penalties in the playoffs in the third period for the Tampa Bay Lightning Zach Bogosian scored or assisted on the nicest play of his entire NHL career 12 years and he's played 644 games in in the regular season and now 12 games in the playoffs
Starting point is 00:59:10 by the way this is the first playoff action his whole career oh my god also he's played for he's played for shit teams like yeah he played for winnipeg when they were bad buffalo thrashers then the jets like he played for the he played for the thrash a peg jets right like he played for the jets before they were good the thrashers and then the sabers and then the sabers like if you don't play in the playoffs people forget about you i i'm not saying any of those guys should have gone should or shouldn't have gone top 10 or actually no i am saying they shouldn't have gone top 10 bailey should have those two defensemen shouldn't have but there's all these guys now from the 2008 draft that are popping up in these playoffs and people are going oh
Starting point is 00:59:59 man they've been around they've been around for over a decade being nhl players people can go like i had people tweet me like you still can't convince me negotiation's good or you still can't convince me luke shen's good 800 games buddy i'm not trying to convince you they should be in the hall of fame like luke shen was being talked about as being the next scott stevens and what that comparison failed to acknowledge is there's not going to be a next scott stevens that that player's dead like that that's that type of game is dead the type it wasn't at the time but it is exactly the next scott steven oh well shit we shouldn't draft that guy because he's going to be suspended 60 out of 80 games every year
Starting point is 01:00:42 you can't draft the next scott putting a lot of faith in nhl player safety there steve well okay well yeah was he drafted by the brooms i don't know i don't know yeah but speaking of Which, do you think Zidane O'Chara is done, guys? Because I don't. No. I don't think so. What is he, 40? 44.
Starting point is 01:01:02 No. Is he 44 now? I think he is, yeah. No. No, no, no. Okay, then he's done. Well, so this is very interesting. The next season is not going to begin until, like, January.
Starting point is 01:01:12 Yeah, he's 43. Okay, 43. Yeah, 43. Okay. But he'll be 44, like, what is probably less than halfway through a condensed, really hyper-condensed NHL season. He's going to play. I'm going to bet on retiring.
Starting point is 01:01:32 I retire that bet, and I say he's playing. I think he signs Liegeman, goes back to Boston, tries again. Why wouldn't you? That team isn't going to change much. We'll see if they can hang on to Torrey Krug, but assuming the pandemic is over eventually. Marshan's 31, Bergeron's 34, Prejji's
Starting point is 01:01:53 33. You run it back as long as you got those guys, you keep running it back. You run it back once. What do you mean once? You run it back until it stops, until those guys leave. Or until your body literally falls apart, in Zdeno Char's case. But he
Starting point is 01:02:09 has been pretty healthy. He has been. I think he retires because of the COVID layoff. I think maybe it's just too much time. jumbo joe's not going to it's true and jumbo joe's had both knees reconstructed yeah he's literally bionic from the knee down both sides and it's and it's circumstance like if you're jumbo joe do you want to go out like that no you want to play for the leafs with spezza and cory perry on the fourth line that's what you would i want chara that's it and cory perry
Starting point is 01:02:42 on the fourth line chara at least got to go down fighting yeah if he ends up retiring you know what I mean, he at least got to go down fighting. Jumbo Joe, you're one of seven teams eliminated, and you get an entire pregnancy off. Like, there's going to be nine months off. Could be more. Could be more. Could be a really big overdue baby.
Starting point is 01:03:02 Because here's the thing. Are they going to do a bubble when the NHL comes back? They're going to take the whole NHL and put them in a bubble this time? And that's another thing. Like, it'll maybe be different for Joe. I mean, he's got a phone. He can ask guys. chara knows what a bubble's like now and i think i think players could all right all right we're
Starting point is 01:03:24 gonna do this is a unique one-time thing i think players could get themselves hyped up to we're gonna do this once i think it's gonna be real hard to go back in the bubble if that's what they end up doing i don't think that's what they're gonna do it i think they're gonna do what the mlb is doing the mlb did eventually figure it out fucking guessing no the nfl the nfl's gonna play in stadiums like they're doing all the travel all the games regular schedule just no fans they did have positive covid tests um but yeah i i mean assuming that i think that makes it tough for the canadian teams because i think all the canadian teams have to play in the states then yeah uh but i think i i i do think that you're probably you're you can't do a bubble i just
Starting point is 01:04:10 don't think you can do it again not for i don't think the players no not for 82 games in playoffs uh-uh like this is no way this has already been way too much for the for the players and i don't even think like the nba guys got got to have their families come in after uh in the second round i don't think the nhl guys get that like what do you do you just go to belleville and just tell everyone who lives in Belleville you don't live here for the next year and just clear them out and move the entire NHL and their family like I don't understand how the how do you do it I think you do it the way the ML the the NFL and the MLB are doing and you cross your fingers the uh that's not a great plan no it's not but that's what they're doing I think I would advocate that
Starting point is 01:04:50 plan I'm saying that's probably what we're looking at all right probably is baseball is going to go to a bubble for the playoffs is what everybody say they're going to do probably a couple hub cities like four different ones and then they'll move them around after a couple rounds but the next regular seasons i don't see how they stay out of out of traveling this and that goes for the nba that goes for nhl yeah the nba is gonna have to do it too just staying inside like i i can't imagine how mentally taxing it is on both leagues you know the nba players and the nhl players just staying in for that long and away from your family you got a lot of these guys young kids you know and their wives are stuck at home with two or three kids sometimes and it's
Starting point is 01:05:31 like and yeah sure they are wealthy and they have help don't tell me it makes it any easier it doesn't emotionally if you are not there you're not there it's it's just hard uh anybody that that doesn't feel some degree of sympathy i don't give a shit how much money these guys make uh you gotta have some sympathy here and if you don't then you're just you're being an asshole like it's a jimmy butler quote what was that oh yeah they asked him if his family's gonna come and he's like no this is a business trip they can stay home that's not a surprise jimmy uh jimmy's a different cat man he really is focused yeah the nba is so far ahead the the uh the closest thing the nhl has is probably ugly duck with pk suban or spitting checklets because it was wild to hear
Starting point is 01:06:17 um jimmy butler talked to jj reddick openly about what went wrong with last year's philadelphia 76ers there's just a podcast where he went on and was just like so it was in this team meeting and i was just like wow these guys have no idea what you're doing jj's had that podcast for a couple years now he's regular he's regularly does a podcast during the season off danny green was he's pretty frank on his too yeah there was another guy yep yeah he is wild to me adam yeah this is your time to shine buddy why you want to do tv ratings talk oh well i know i did see the sports net release oh well then go ahead go ahead and say it sorry i just saw it and i was like well adam we eat this shit up in august for the record books bolstered by the return of the
Starting point is 01:07:01 nhl nba and mlb sports net recorded the highest audience share that's 10.4 percent in network history in august 2020 connecting with viewers coast to coast sports net was the most watched channel in canada in august across several key demographics including the coveted adults 25 to 54 good for them demographic dude wow you explain how banana sandwich a 10.4 rating is in 2020 so just just to give you an idea um the nhl will pull one or two points or percentage what we call them points or share points percentage points when they do like the stanley cup finals like the stanley cup finals might rate a 1.9 or something like that in the states in canada they rate higher but the audience share in the in american television ratings is just not huge you might
Starting point is 01:07:54 have five five six million people watching but even so that's not really that's worth what it's not a big chunk of the population for for the for the nh for sports net to get 10 that's not you know you can't say 36 million people do not have cable so it's not like it's 10 million people but it is in the millions we're talking five or six million people uh in in in total demo now i'd love to see a little bit more about uh uh which demos because they said several key demos i'm assuming adults 25 54 which is the major demo in any sort of broadcasting that's the one that that's the big money maker for a lot of these broadcasters if they're doing well in that like i who is not watching sports right now there's a lot of people
Starting point is 01:08:38 that are casual fans that are like it's it's exciting and there's something new and the thing about sports right now is that it's such a fucking miracle that we got them it's such a miracle that this even happened that everybody's like i just there's it's almost like you're adjacent to hope it's like hope is in the screen and i feel the hope every time i watch a hockey game every time i watch a basketball game even watching the raptors blow a 10 point lead last night which was heartbreaking um i still felt good because i was still watching my team and i was still it was like you still it hasn't worn off for me yet how amazing it is that we have sports at all it really for me personally it was a shock to the system when we didn't have them anymore
Starting point is 01:09:28 it was like it was it was one of the most depressing things about the pandemic for me personally and and i was going through and let's just be honest i was going through a divorce like yeah but it was it was there it is everyone on the reddit page by the way are you sure that was the most the sports the number one okay by the way i'll address that in a second i'll address that in a second because i think i should but um but you know there's a there's a uh uh there is a an unbelievable feeling that you get when you get something like this back and you realize how much you love it there are times with the nhl there are times doing this show and i know steve and jesse can relate to me on this one where you just get burnt out and it's a right around the time
Starting point is 01:10:13 the players get burnt out too it's it's the february through the mid-march after the trade deadline in late january you're like good god especially the way the babcock teams played which was terribly boring oh you're like around all-star week too oh my god it's always a slog for yeah oh yeah and you know why because the holidays are not first of all they're not a break period no no they're they're not a break worse everything is ramped up you have to see more family you have to do more things yep you know it's just they they inject you know there's sort of a race to december 23rd and then you're running around for the next four days and then the schedule picks up right away and if you're the leafs it's probably a back-to-back before and
Starting point is 01:10:57 after then there's probably an outdoor game and the world juniors are going on you have a couple weeks to go and then it's the all-star break and then it's the trade deadline and yeah by the time the playoffs hit you're like holy shit yeah well and that's where and then it's the first round of the goddamn playoffs which was just a craziness so what i'll say is that i'm not surprised by those ratings at all first off they've done a great job with the broadcast themselves and i think second um there is i mean because it's it's very watchable television obviously right it's very but but beyond the broadcast around the games the games have been amazing and i think a lot of sports fans probably feel the same way it's like thank god we at least have this thank god our
Starting point is 01:11:42 escape is still here and so i'm i'm cautiously worried and i don't want to bring this up too quick it's almost like talking about the end of austin matthews contract in four years i'm worried about next season once the playoffs are over what then yes we're gonna have free agency yes we're gonna have the draft then what football football yes how dare you okay no no baseball playoffs but when are we getting the nhl back january maybe how maybe how This is the thing. They'll fly around. No, I'm worried.
Starting point is 01:12:17 I'm worried about Rams. They'll fly around. Hey, let's fly around. I'm telling you, the NFL is going to do it for 17 games or whatever, 17 weeks, and then the playoffs. And they're going to prove that you can do it. And then everybody else is going to do it. We'll be fine.
Starting point is 01:12:33 Well. You can do anything if you just completely fucking ignore all the. Just close your eyes and believe. I also, I also worry. Down, set, hut. the nhl is not exactly a tv revenue heavy league yeah the economics of it are concerning this is a oh what did max kellerman say there's 20 000 hockey fans in every market and they're all at the game in the united states it's true in the u.s or well according to him so if you can't go
Starting point is 01:13:04 so i'm just throwing it out there i know that's anxiety inducing but there you have it i don't know how they do this i don't yeah but that's uh that's that's tomorrow's problem though we'll kick that can down the road yeah we lock that in the closet yeah right outside there's a cd player we're totally ignoring it i'll also throw this out there there may be a future where in this same climate people are going to games in stadiums while socially distanced and wearing masks yeah that's true because there are enough seats where you pack it not even half like not even a quarter but some some reasonable amount of fans in there 10 seats apart everybody socially distanced and safe that might actually be the best way to see a game you've ever had and then
Starting point is 01:13:57 you jack up the ticket prices yep i i think they should do this for like this year stanley cup finals you sell 10 tickets at like a hundred thousand dollars and you can go inside the bubble and watch the stanley cup finals dude there's you listen a lot of people aren't gonna like this you can absolutely do that and i kind of i think i support it because look at all the shit that we're doing if you can go inside and eat at a restaurant why can't you go sit in the upper deck of a hockey stadium this is the thing now people are gonna argue well it's not a good idea and i don't know if i'm gonna combat you on that but they're they're doing it they're doing it so until until they decide oh shit it's a disaster we need to go back they're dude they're opening
Starting point is 01:14:48 schools in a couple weeks it's well they've already opened them in the states they've already open them in the state yeah and it's been awesome hey but again all right class if you turn your page to uh just and you can do anything if you just completely ignore fucking everything but um there there's 50 000 seats in an nfl stadium you can fit 10 000 people in there safe sure yep sure somebody might try it yeah why not yeah well the cowboys just didn't their owner say well fuck it jerry jones yeah didn't he just say we're having everyone or whatever yeah i don't think her cousin said today he was like uh if i die i die what are you ivan drago relax come on like come on we all gotta die somehow i live my life a quarter mile at a time
Starting point is 01:15:44 like yeah like listen you cannot pack the place you can't no you can have some it's not a very big number but you can have some they're going to do it the Montreal Impact actually had fans at a game because it's an outdoor stadium and they had
Starting point is 01:16:07 a limited number of fans I believe I don't know if the game already took place or it's going to happen but it's a thing that happened I went to a mall I went to a mall the other day well so did I the malls have been open since like June yeah but i haven't been in since like february it was a mind-blowing experience and you'll be
Starting point is 01:16:26 shocked to find out that nose out of his mask guy is also talks on his phone like friggin this guy i saw i saw a dude on speakerphone holding it up to his mouth with his nose out of his mask and i'm like someone should revoke your license like that guy's that guy once he's done shopping is gonna get on the road he's gonna vote oh jesus christ it's a mess it's a mess how much election coverage are we gonna do on this show no good all of it every show no no nothing election like the day after can we have like 10 minutes oh wait you want that yeah you want that no one wants that no one wants that i think i think the internet needs it no i don't no i can't only hot takes over yeah over COVID like on the list of things I don't want to talk about that's number one
Starting point is 01:17:20 number one COVID's number two but just because I'm sick and tired of talking about it so anyway I know we got a press conference to get to let me just quickly mention something I should have known better than to here's my here's been my strategy so I Caprice and I have obviously gone our separate ways uh and my strategy on virgin mornings and here was to just sort of slip in that yeah a single dad now that sort of thing and i should have known better because nothing gets past uh nothing gets past the audience here because it's a pretty tight-knit group they'd like you adam they like you there's that you just slip that shit in well yeah i know i know i so you know what i didn't want to do was draw attention or make a big deal of it because there was more
Starting point is 01:18:00 important things going on frankly uh this happened a long while ago um so you would not have known that it was going on. Um, all the legal stuff's been wrapped. All of the parental stuff's been wrapped. Uh, Caprice and I are on really, really good terms, relationships, and this is a part of life. And, uh, and you know, frankly, what's most important here is our daughter and she's great. And so we found our new normal and, and it's all sort of slipped in under the radar. Uh, so I know it's new news to you, but it's actually not that new. Um, so, you know, I'm, I'm happy with and proud of the way we've handled it and you know that's that's sort of the that's sort of what's going on so if you hear me talk about i'm in my new apartments because i am in a new apartment
Starting point is 01:18:41 uh uh you know if you hear me talk about the fact that i'm a single dad or that i'm dating it's because i am a single dad and i'm dating uh you know it's so i know that's a bit jarring uh because if you're into it just slide in his dm sorry no no don't do that don't do that nope no thank you steve for that no thank you uh i would prefer that we just keep it to the apps uh but uh anyway sorry that i i tried to try to just kind of normalize like i tried to just sprinkle it in there like salt you can't do that you just gotta especially on this show so uh anyway that's that's what's happened uh i would ask a couple things first off um appreciate all the messages uh please um if you can well not if you can please leave caprice alone um there were you know people
Starting point is 01:19:29 well-meaning who were like commenting in her comment section uh and she wasn't offended by it at all but it was one of those things where it's like you know she can read all this stuff and so um she addressed it on her comments and that sort of thing but you know i think you need to respect her privacy she's got her own thing going on and and building her own business and her own career and uh so i'm gonna ask you to leave her alone on that one second uh as far as there were some people that have reached out and asked uh what happened i'm not gonna tell you i'm not gonna tell you that's none of your business uh now that you mentioned it like what what happened relationships end is what i will tell you it's normal um divorce is normal and
Starting point is 01:20:07 it doesn't have to be tragic or awful or mean or any of those things that they tell you it is very very difficult and i would say to you that it is the last resort i would ever consider and and I would never want to go through it again, ever. It was awful. And we were on good terms, and it was awful. But at the end of the day, we've come out of it, and I'm really proud and happy about where we are. Got a great kid.
Starting point is 01:20:34 That's what matters. And that's all I'm going to say on it. Do you see the story about Brad Pitt's new girlfriend? Yeah, she's married. To a 65-year-old who's just like, yeah, if she wasn't dating Brad Pitt, go ahead. It's his fifth wife, this restaurateur. What? That guy's had a life.
Starting point is 01:20:51 So this guy's a famous restaurateur in Paris, very successful. He's married a young model, and they have an open relationship. And she's dating Brad Pitt. That's who she got in their open relationship. Pretty wild. You know, like, yeah, that's – Like, come on. The first –
Starting point is 01:21:12 It's not, right? It's not average. the first comment the first comment is person i'm in a relationship brad pitt hi person i'm in an open relationship no way so anyway i just thought thank you for for hearing me out on that by the way also um i guess we gotta do the press conference because we've only got about 15 minutes left steve's got to go do a radio hit well radio and then he has to do a television show right oh it's streamed stream you want to talk about that steve uh yeah sure some no name am i right some no name who's yeah no uh alish for far no we love you alish i'm kidding yes she
Starting point is 01:21:56 scored exactly one more professional hockey goal than i have she was formerly of the and we're going to talk about that on the show today formerly of the mark and thunder and also represented canada in the tournaments uh with the name that i don't remember she explained it to me yesterday and she was the captain of the ryerson rams too absolutely uh so we're gonna be doing nhl chat room uh that's gonna be on sportsnets youtube channel or wednesday 6 p.m eastern 3 p.m pacific uh youtube channel and facebook page amazing so what you're gonna do is you're gonna do brother here's what you're gonna do brother is you're gonna watch that show every wednesday and then once that's done brother you're gonna wait a little while and then you're gonna
Starting point is 01:22:40 listen to the steve dangle podcast oh yeah halfway through the steve dangle press conference first question comes from vlad the inhaler vlad the inhaler was nice did you guys watch the david blaine stunt i watched part of it how did it end i have to tell you okay the most riveting piece of television produced of all time ever ever ever ever can i know it was good it was good background tell me what the hell it was like what was it okay so it was great background tv for today david blaine on youtube live took 52 helium balloons it was standing there he got on youtube live at like 9 a.m and by like 11 he started floating in the air so he these 52 helium balloons carried him up into the air
Starting point is 01:23:42 25 000 feet so he was basically like in the atmosphere and then he jumped so the balloons if you're trying to picture it i'm sure you've seen the images online look like up they're giant colorful they could carry a whole human man so he climbs up this 25 000 feet while he's doing this he straps on a parachute to himself he keeps dropping weight while yes i mean he keeps dropping weights while he's going so he can get higher and higher he reaches like almost 25 000 like 24 900 he lets go of the balloon he free falls from the atmosphere all the way down to the ground and he pulls his parachute just in time and he lands safely it was amazing i'm watching it right now because i didn't want to invest all that time to just stare at david plain david blaine
Starting point is 01:24:33 floating and it really does look like disney it was incredible it was like it was incredible to watch just the pictures of a man floating in the atmosphere by balloons am i am i wrong to be just not interested in this at all it's not something you got to be interested in something just kind of be like i didn't mean the topic itself but like when i heard about what david blaine was doing i was like no no don't care he's not is he about to oh my god he's like fiddling with clips my anxiety's through the roof and you've already told me what happens i'm just i guess i'm just waiting for the moment where he actually falls out of the thing if the thing is on and like it's easily you're at your computer and you click the tab and you throw it on there
Starting point is 01:25:19 and you're watching a man 25 000 feet in the air about to drop himself it's a little you're gonna watch the 10 seconds of that that's all it is i guess whoa oh my god he just falls very fast what a nut can i just tell you this is we are getting back to normal we're slowly getting back to normal people are arguing about pumpkin spice lattes raptors are losing david blaine is doing things that we're all talking about i made a huge huge mistake last show because i was arguing that pumpkin spice lattes don't taste like pumpkin and people are like well no of course they don't they taste like pumpkin spice asshole and i was like piece of shit isn't pumpkin spice supposed to taste like pumpkin well no it's the spice that goes on pumpkin you idiot you moron so i was
Starting point is 01:26:11 corrected the psl peeps came out and i was corrected you got called out anyway next question yes next question comes from jordan say lee jordan say jordan jordan wants to know have any of y'all played the nhl 21 beta steve you would be the one out of us to play no but i've done some dm sliding send me a code stupid so no no no sorry not for the beta dude i've played nhl i three times since leo was born maybe four what are you busy i holy shit um but i've been sliding into rammer's dms john ramjeg singh because i tweeted an idea and a few people were like you know man like you got a little bit of like clout like can you just reach out and rammer responded in three minutes and basically what i was trying to say was for eashl there's only six
Starting point is 01:27:14 you right there's five skaters and a goalie but you can have more than that amount of people on your team what if you want to include more people on your team not just what if you want to include more people what if you got life like we play with one guy who's like on call we play with dads we play with what if you got the the the intermission p breaks are they say 30 seconds but bullshit those are 14 seconds i don't know and let's be honest a lot of people playing video games on friday or saturday nights you've been drinking you know so you need a little bit more time so what i was saying is can we add subs can we add substitutions to eashl and uh rammer's running it up the flagpole and i'm not it's it doesn't sound impossible why can't you just do
Starting point is 01:28:05 like why can't the guy sit on the bench and you actually do line changes i don't know but it's like to me like i was even coming up with this from a programming standpoint i'm like this can't be the hardest thing in the world can it i think i think sometimes you need to have that feedback from people jesse because you you get so close to the painting that you can't see the whole picture right it's sort of like you just wouldn't even have thought right i don't know i don't know all the reasons the thing about rammer is that like no one wants that game to be the best game more than that guy and we've been critical of the game for certain elements of it in the past openly uh but i'll tell you uh having met him having demoed i mean we demoed a
Starting point is 01:28:46 game at the offices um great great staff behind it they're doing their best and there's a lot of work to do right it's it's a lot and i i believe in nhl 21 they're going to allow so if you're a human goalie you've been playing as the goalie all game your team's down by one you go to the bench for the extra attacker you're the extra attacker like again just a really simple thing that probably should have been in there the whole time it wasn't but now it is but because you're able to make that change to me that would like why can't we just have i don't know one guy two guys sitting on the bench and it's like a fight so you request hey i want to get out there one of your teammates okay i'll be left wing this shift presses triangle or whatever and then they
Starting point is 01:29:33 come off for you this is this is what we were talking about i think it's a great idea can you also tell them to ban anybody who does anything racist across all ea platforms supposedly that's another big aspect of nhl 21 is that they're interesting they're doing a big old bunch and that's a big big thanks to you jesse tic-tac-tomar a bunch of other people leading the charge uh sounds like they're going to take it more seriously obviously we got to wait until it's put into practice because racists are pretty crafty uh but uh we're well they're always evolving they've been around for a long time so we're we're trying to figure out ways to stomp on them and uh i don't know if it is but uh that that is a focus of that is one of the
Starting point is 01:30:23 newer uh more upgraded there you go focuses of nhl 21 it sounds like another question yeah this one comes from mahash hey adam and steve if you could change the outcome of game 7 2013 against boston or game 5 2020 against columbus which do you choose uh 20 uh boston boston i think that did psychological damage i think columbus felt inevitable uh uh boston was like that was a damaging blow that awesome yeah boston because it's that loss i don't think changed leafs management's mind really when it's on when it maybe should have yeah they were gonna try to get clarkson anyway they were probably gonna try to get bolin anyway they were gonna try to upgrade on reimer anyway whereas i think
Starting point is 01:31:23 kyle dubas made his mind up about this team in february yep i agree when when he didn't do anything at the trade deadline and that was obvious with nick robertson randomly you know just here you go you're on the third line now and casperi kapanen getting traded like they're not it's kyle dubas i think is more along the wavelength that we were where this team is not this team is not not good enough because of these five games they're not good enough because of these 70 that preceded them exactly i think he also said in his press conference they said you know you've drawn a lot of criticism and like in a in a post because we were hard on on the year end press conference but he's had a press conference in that or uh you know with the
Starting point is 01:32:08 casperi cabinet trade and somebody asked him about the criticism that he's taken and to his to his credit he said it's been warranted like and it and it has he knows he knows he's not stupid i think they made their decision after the david ayers game they're like uh-oh we're not good enough yeah that's why they went out and what was their big what was their big move they got the ghost of robin lenner for like a draft pick and they never let him go they traded noted stanley cup uh playoff winning goaltender michael hutchinson for callie rosen yo that dude won a playoff game michael hutchinson and it was such a hutch it was such a hutch game yeah he played he didn't play he was awful he wasn't great and they just outscored the other
Starting point is 01:32:57 team yeah no they out they outscored the other team shots that's how you win you know what that game reminded me of is you know with freddie the criticism has often been oh well they you know there were some games where or no it wasn't freddie it was garrett sparks they never gave him goal support and with hutch i was like jesus they gave him like four goals every game yeah lost every game like six four time for one more we do one more question this one comes from mitchell bader what team do you find the most boring to watch or even follow whether it's the way they play or the moves of the gm or the fans which team you don't say the minnesota wild i'm gonna be mad which team is the most boring although that's changed chuck fletcher's not there
Starting point is 01:33:42 yeah that's the thing right that's the thing with them let me let me look let me look real quick let me look adam you got an answer you know what i'm uh it it comes down to i think it sometimes it really it's that's a very personal one because i don't mean to make this too deep but you know sometimes the stories are very interesting but you're just so burnt out on the team that you are like okay like what else is the problem now um what are the teams that i would just genuinely like to talk about more positively and have tried and have tried and have tried and done everything i possibly can is the coyotes and since the start about them i since the start of this show like one of the first questions jesse that i prepped to ask steve is
Starting point is 01:34:29 how are the coyotes still a franchise and that was in 2013 right because at that point they were they're owned by the NHL right it was a and they had gone to the third round I think the year previous but it was like it's still like what do we like what are we holding on to this for and it's not because I think that they shouldn't have a team or they shouldn't be a team or they don't their fans don't deserve it they deserve all of it but even when the things for the Coyotes seem to go well they go back there's just nothing about this like you know they finally seem to like they're gonna they got a couple good goals Ranta and Kemper and they've got all of Rackman larson who i or i guess the ghost of what he used to be and you know some good players up front and
Starting point is 01:35:08 shalmerson and stepping like all these guys and then there's some bad contracts and uh the general manager leaves after you know uh allowing them to um uh train or test players before the draft see that's where they're like stupid you know what i mean like it's at least interesting it's interesting but it's always like i guess it's maybe it's just depressing like i just feel i feel horrible for coyotes fans right where does where does buffalo fall in there oh so sick of the buffalo shit too yeah what about where do where do the devils fall in there the sense the devils as much the sends no they're wow the sends to me are a big juicy burger i love them um i'm gonna throw a name in there they are rarely ever bad enough to be talked about in
Starting point is 01:35:54 the lottery conversation they're rarely ever good enough to be talked about in any good conversation um there's constant tumult but it's always whispered about behind the scenes and it's just cloak and dagger front office stuff and they never really do anything i'm talking about the florida panthers yeah boo yeah boo like boo what are you boo i i bill zito is their gm oh yeah that happened today but that is cool by the way long time he's got an interesting story long time uh columbus assistant gm he's been there since 2015 he might be great might be great but you know he it's the most interesting thing to happen to them in a while like you need to bill zito needs to get me jacked up about the florida panthers and i already said new gm
Starting point is 01:36:46 some good players decent little contract situation make them good make them interesting i'm curious yarmo kekalainen is one of the ballsiest general managers in this league that that man has a steel stomach i wonder if bill zito's picked up some of that and i wonder how many because because you got to think they got to shed salary this year we know that they're not going to be a cap team uh they have to be competitive they've got probrovsky's deal they're gonna make some moves how much of that was yarmo and how much of that was
Starting point is 01:37:19 you know maybe some guidance from bill zito can we throw the kings in there well that's a lot of teams it is a lot of teams i think i think i think i think florida is a good one i think arizona is a good one i think buffalo is a good one buffalo's for sure good one jesse what is it for you most boring nhl team i think you guys nailed it with the uh the ones that are just consistently terrible and not fun sabers and coyotes see i think i think at least la is fun because you know they're bad right now because they're rebuilding that's fun to me the kings were good now they're not and then they'll be good again eventually uh you think uh but like it's it's these teams that are constantly stuck in a flux of like
Starting point is 01:38:04 like the panthers finished this season 15th which is just the most panthers thing ever You know what I mean? I think of 15th. I think of the Florida Panthers. You're lucky to be 15th. This is a good season for them. Can I shout out one person before we go? Sure. The Leafs hired Sam Kim
Starting point is 01:38:25 as the club's video and coaching coordinator. Sam Kim was once the mascot for the New York Islanders. Love. Love that story. Everybody out there, believe in your fucking dreams. follow it to the t and just go after it that's the craziest journey i've heard in a long time
Starting point is 01:38:46 yo that's sick mascot to video coordinator and congrats to sam and that ain't the end that's just the beginning so congratulations sam and if you want a little bit more information there's a staff page for him on eliteprospects.com i didn't know that was a thing he has previously been a head coach at columbia university a skating coach a video coach a director of hockey operations in the ncaa an assistant coach a video coach in the ahl and it looks like he was a video coach for the as far as i can tell the south korean hockey team that's cool that's really cool came back over with the bakersfield condor so those are great that's a great story sam kim has had some jobs man he's only 35 that's a crazy resume for a guy who's only 35 uh yeah no that's cool that's really cool
Starting point is 01:39:33 I'm excited for that guy. It's good. And I mean, really it's another story of the Leafs taking something valuable from the Islanders. And I'm always here. Finally, you take our coach. We'll take your video coach. Oh, what are you in the second round? Whatever, man. Yeah. Yeah. It won't be next year. So yeah, because they probably will be there.
