The Steve Dangle Podcast
with your hosts
Steve Dangle and Adam Wilde
Have you ever felt sad
at the end of a video game?
Not because the game was over, but because you made a choice?
They offer you that end of video game
choice that you have to go
Damn it! Damn it!
This all stems from a conversation we were having
because YouTube's algorithm is
awful and just links to
so many terrible videos
what's the video called
it was
I deleted it
but it was
it was the saddest
in saddest in all caps
the saddest
deaths in Grand Theft Auto
that will make you cry
and I said
well
okay
because I was thinking
like online multiplayer
those deaths are not
going to make me cry
no
like I don't feel
anything for those
but
if we're talking about
the actual like cut scenes
I might get hurt a little
I might shed a tear
there's some sad deaths
none in Grand Theft Auto
The only ones I was talking about was at the end of Grand Theft Auto 5.
Spoiler alert, in case you haven't played a five-year-old game.
There will be one person who will be upset.
Damn it!
I've been avoiding this since 2013!
I paid $29.99 for this at EB Games when I traded in four other games.
For crying out loud!
When you traded in those four games, you got a total of ten cents for those four games.
We'll give you half a chocolate bar for this.
Pawn Stars
visits EB Games
I'm gonna have to bring in an expert
best I can do is negative
$25
sorry
in fact you're making our carpet dirty being here
you'll have to pay for that too
there's three options at the end of
Grand Theft Auto 5
if you don't know the characters I'm sorry
you can kill Michael, you can kill Trevor or you can save
everyone and I played the kill Michael
and kill Trevor ones and all I was left with was
not sadness, but what kind of a
jerk, what kind of an absolute
narc chooses
either of those first two options
where you kill Michael or Trevor.
And what's the other option? Save everyone.
Oh, why
do you have options to kill people if
there's a save everyone option? Exactly!
That's instantaneously what I would do, but Steve has time.
So he can go back and replay that scene.
I used to have time. I have time today!
Alright, Adam? I have lots of time
today because I deleted Twitter off my phone, but maybe
maybe that's for later
in the show
I'm trying to think of
sad video game deaths
not a ton
no
have you guys played
The Last of Us yet?
I've heard it's outstanding
heard it's really good
haven't played it
you've heard it's great
since 2011
I believe
so you guys
better catch up on that
that's my game
where I go
yeah soon
soon for a very long time
if you have
PlayStation Plus
I'm pretty sure it's free
so
you really have no excuse
it's on your system
PlayStation Plus
that's the subscription service
right?
so if you just have online
How much does that...
Oh, just online?
Yeah, if you pay for the online thingy,
which I have.
It's free for Plus.
What's the...
Okay, so what's the service,
and I'm sorry to go off on a tangent here,
but what's the service where
there are older games that are available,
like Red Dead Redemption?
That's PlayStation Plus.
So I have Red Dead...
Yeah.
Because I thought it was like $19.99 a month
or something like that, wasn't it?
Maybe that is.
I don't know.
Because I'm like,
I'm not paying $19 a month
to play Red Dead Redemption,
the original.
Like, come on.
That's another one that I haven't played.
Great game,
but it's only available for PS3.
You can't get it for PS4.
No, I've got to be able to download it.
Yeah.
No, you can't.
No.
Can't you get it with PlayStation Plus on PS4?
I don't think so.
Maybe.
Oh, you can get it with PS...
Yeah.
On PlayStation Plus, that's where you can play the PS3 games.
That's how you can play The Last of Us.
So I have it then.
So I'm pretty sure if you're paying for online...
I hope so.
Are you paying for online?
Of course, yeah.
Yeah, then you have PlayStation Plus.
Okay.
If you go into the PlayStation Plus section, you can play NBA 2K8 or something like that.
Oh, my God.
Yes.
Yeah, it's pretty dope.
yeah and The Last of Us
is one of the free games
there and you should play it
because I'm not going to
spoil it at the end for you
because it's so heartbreaking
Far Cry
well damn
Far Cry has this weird
ability to get you
into certain characters
and there's one
I think it's three
where you're on like
an island
and you can
you can kill the bad guy
or you can become
the bad guy
like become the bad guy
and kill the other two people
and it's like
like the people
who've been with you
the whole game
and I've tried that
a couple times
I did it once
to one character
and I was like
I can't do this
because like
the horror of it all
and
there was a couple others
I don't know
there's a couple like
moments in Zelda
over the course of the years
where I was like
oh man
oh man
when I was a kid
I don't know if I can handle this
yeah
absolutely
I don't know
I've never played Zelda
it's
me neither
but I got the
the new Nintendo Classic
where you get 20 games
in the little box
oh you got one
yeah
that's cool
I just got it
just got it
I was amazed
I was playing Mario 3
which I used to play
all the time
like dude I remember
where like all the
secrets are like it's
buried in my muscle
memory but I know it
I know it all it's so
pathetic it was that
instead of girls
you ever seen a speed
run in Mario 3 like
on the internet
it stresses me out
so much
people beat it in
11 minutes
oh yeah I've watched
those
crazy
it's insane
crazy like especially
the cannonball level
where they're like
they literally just
pop from cannonball
to cannonball they
just know
and that's all you
hear and it's great
watching it because
they do it on twitch
Yes
And everyone in the chat is like
I'm here for this
Oh my god
It's happening
It happened
They like beat the world record
By like two tenths of a second
And ah
They do it
And it's just a bunch of
Exclamation marks
It's total silence
Yeah
It's just people in the room
GIF
GIF
Face
Face
Face
Exclamation
OMG
Holy shit

I'm gonna donate 25 cents
Oh my god
I can't believe I'm here

And like
Just all the

Yeah
I was telling Steve
I saw Post Malone
Playing a Nintendo DS
On my flight
Home from Montreal
That's crazy
And I was like
I want a Nintendo DS
If Post Malone's
Still playing it
Sure
So I think I might
Invest in that next
If it's cool enough
For Post Malone
Yeah
I think I'd need
To invest in Nintendo DS
Jesse went to Oceaga
Yeah how was Oceaga
It was a good time
Did you see
One of my favorite bands
Was there
Did you see
Franz Ferdinand
By any chance
I did not
Is this one of your
Favorite bands
One of my favorite bands
I really love them
Love them
Cause they're amazing
No you girls
Never do
Yeah
Really
Yeah fuck yeah
Absolutely
They have better songs than that
But like
The first album is like a classic
If you're like into that
Sort of rock
Absolutely
That's great
That's surprising
Really
I would not have
I mean
I went and saw them
It's okay to like them
Oh no
I went and saw them
With our friend
A guy who we grew up with
Named Russell
And this was the first concert
I'd ever been to
Russell Brand
Russell Brand
Yeah
First concert I'd ever been to
That like I didn't realize
I didn't realize that like you could go to a concert and stand
like at that point in my life
I was like probably 15 where I was like
I thought you just went to concerts and you had
an assigned seat so this is at the
at the time it was like the docks but it's now
the rebel or something in Toronto
and it was their first album
they're kind of just breaking and this guy
literally in the crowd who was taller than
everybody else made it his mission to elbow
everyone in the fucking head like he got
like this perverse like he just
fucking loved it like and he just
It was like dropping like serious elbows on people and they get it was like I was like this is fucked. I hate this
Okay
Mosh pits used to be just running around and shoving people
Yeah, now I've been seeing all these videos of people throwing like Barton Lisa windmill punches
Oh, yeah, and kick it. They're doing the Bart and Alisa at the same time. Just trying to kill people. When did that happen?
When you're high, you don't feel anything at a
Travis Scott who closed on Friday broke his leg and the concert had to be stopped
Went so hard, he broke his leg.
That's insane.
How is his new album?
Oh my God, it's great.
Is it good?
But it's, I was telling,
we were having this conversation earlier, sorry.
It's 17 songs, which is a little annoying
because you can't perfect 17 songs.
So I prefer when artists go short
and you get all the hits,
but it's a streaming era and you bloat your album
so you can pump the streaming numbers.
So I get it.
Yeah, double albums are always hilarious
because it's like
ah you mean
there's one good album
in this double album
you're just going to
make me find it
yeah you'll just
make me find 12 songs
that are actually playable
and then I'll put them
on a playlist
here's the only downside
but it's filled with hits
here's a 5 minute
interlude that sucks
yeah
absolutely
let's get to the next song man
whatever
exactly
hey I want to shout out
our boy Evan Hubert
yeah
who put together
the coolest thing
that we
well Jesse
Jesse I think missed it all
because he was at
Oshiega
I saw it on
Like four days after, like four days after, Jesse's like, that cartoon's nuts.
He's like, Steve, watch a Game of Thrones in ten years.
Yeah, I thought you just weren't that impressed.
Yeah, well, that garbage thing.
Yeah, and then you were like, whoa.
I'm like, it was pretty awesome.
Man, if you guys heard of Maroon 5, it was okay.
It featured us, so it couldn't have been that good.
I thought it was very good.
Excellent, actually.
That's what I think.
You're the star.
The part where you have like the long eyelashes, like, hey guys.
I didn't watch it.
If you want to follow Evan...
Are you out of your mind?!
Sorry.
Evan Huber, at sketchhead underscore Evan.
And if you can, he's asking for people to help crowdfund his projects and stuff.
He does more than just videos for...
He doesn't do the videos for us, to be honest with you.
So if you pump up his...
I encourage you to watch the video on YouTube.
So at least he gets some AdSense money from that.
Yeah, also he's got a...
I guess it's called a Ko-fi account.
K-O-F-I.
and you can donate
a coffee to them
so a coffee is
coffee
is three dollars
at a time
so like
the other day
I donated
14 coffees to them
because that's
two weeks worth
so you can go on
and give them one
or you can give them
ten
or
three whatever
that's a cool service
don't just watch
don't just watch
the video he did for us
watch his other stuff
he's really
great and talented
and make sure you click
all of the ads
ah yes
see okay
Hey, as a YouTube partner, I'm going to have to ask you to not say that.
Yeah, please don't.
On account of that is a breach of something.
I didn't say that.
I was being sarcastic.
Well, not for us.
It's not a breach for us.
We were encouraging you to do it for someone else.
Yes.
But definitely don't do it for us.
Heavens no.
No, that's wrong.
I would ask you to skip every ad.
See.
Right?
No.
Wouldn't you?
Wouldn't.
No, I always watch all the ads.
Are you a psychopath?
Beth, you skipped the ads?
What's wrong with you?
I always watch-
I don't care if Iggy and Charlie eat.
I want to watch Steve's video.
No.
Hey guys, what's up?
This is a five minute infomercial on how you need a new washer dryer.
And I'm always like, hooked!
Can't wait to watch the next four minutes and 53 seconds of this.
Remember when the YouTube video was just this guy in his garage like,
this is my Porsche or whatever.
And he's like, you know how I got this?
Books.
And he just-
I never watched it all the way through.
I don't know how that commercial ends.
It was just some guy, and I think he's got a YouTube channel, so I think he advertised
through YouTube, but he's basically, it's like him in his supercar in his garage, and
he's like, you guys like this car or whatever?
You know how I got it?
Reading.
And he, like, shot it on his phone.
Yeah.
What year is this?
A couple years ago, I think?
It wasn't that long ago.
Dude, no.
No, I know.
It sounds like some guy was like, I want to be the first one to have a YouTube ad.
Nope.
Like, two years ago.
This was yesterday.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, I've noticed.
Anyway, shout out, Evan.
He's coming in studio right now.
The video did really great.
And you know what we'll have to do next time
is just put, like,
when he comes out with it,
because he surprised us.
We didn't know.
We were working on one.
Yeah, I know.
He sent me some sketches.
But what I want to know
or what I want to do with him next time
is we'll take, like, a 10-second teaser
and put it on all of our YouTube channels,
or not on our YouTube channels,
but on our Instagrams.
So that way it pushes to his YouTube.
I'd rather him get the money
than, you know what I mean?
Than everybody find it on Twitter
and then you just watch it
and then you don't go back to YouTube and watch it.
Bingo.
Or have to donate money through coffee if you can't do that.
Because not everybody can.
We get that.
Of course.
So let's do the AdSense thing so at least he makes some money off it because he's very talented.
That was awesome.
Over 62,000 people have seen it on Twitter alone.
That's pretty good.
Yeah, it's not bad.
Yeah.
And it was one of those videos, I think you picked the right clip.
Again, we didn't set him up for that.
I mentioned, I think, in a previous podcast that he was going to do it.
But he picked that clip.
That was all him.
So that was a perfect 30-second clip.
And I think it takes like a week of concentrated effort to do like 30 seconds of animation we were talking about.
So it's not easy.
How do you want to support him?
How do you know those 62,000 people weren't just Russian bots?
They could have just been Russian bots.
It was on Twitter, which we shouldn't trust.
No, we definitely shouldn't.
So 61 is probably fake bots?
Probably.
So it's like 1,000 people.
Okay, the video doesn't exist.
It didn't happen.
No.
No, we don't have it.
Yeah.
Hey, Steve.
Yes, Adam.
You went and saw the Stanley Cup.
I did, and only the Stanley Cup.
So there's a story here.
I know it was rainy, and I know you ran into our boy Andrew Sheehy, who comes out to every
event.
We love you, Andrew.
Shout out.
Shout out, Andrew.
And he was posting, I saw on his Facebook, he had pictures with you and everything.
So tell me, Steve.
Yes.
There is apparently a story associated with this that Jesse already knows.
Jesse's talked about it far too much.
No, I didn't hear the full story.
Oh.
I wanted you to keep going.
I'll tell you the full story, which I think gets to an argument Jesse wants to have.
So that's good.
But, no, so the—
I don't know if I'm argumentative today.
Go ahead.
Years ago, Chris Draper, longtime Detroit Red Wing, noted guy who was traded for a dollar.
You go ahead and Google that one.
He brought the Stanley Cup to the Black Dog Pub, which is literally up the street from where Adam and I grew up.
and uh i met chris draper when i was in grade two but that was the year claude lemieux decked
them from behind red wings win the cup next year brings the cup to the black dog but i didn't
find out about it until it was too late i found out in the scarborough mirror a local paper back
when those existed and um i was like you know what i'm not gonna miss that again i'm not gonna
miss that again because i think he brought it there more than once it's rare that a local like
I mean a local
like someone who grew up
up the street
not someone who's from
like the same town
I'm talking about
up the street
it's rare that a local
wins
a championship
in a major league
you know
and we've been lucky enough
to have that happen
a couple times
if Wayne Simmons
wins the cup
he grew up just down the street
so he might bring it
to the black dog
who knows
but DSP
grew up just down the street
so he brings the cup
Devante Smith-Pelly
just in case
you're not a Caps fan
my bad
I assume most of the people
listening to the show
know who DSP is
Not everybody's going to know.
You're right.
So George St. Pierre.
So I'm in the parking lot across the street from the Black Dog.
It's like kind of a busted plaza.
There used to be a bowling alley.
I don't know.
It might have got shut down for reasons.
I don't know.
You're drinking, mostly?
Yeah, mostly that.
I wasn't going to say it, but yeah, there it is.
There it is right there.
For sure, was that?
I was 19 when I drank there.
I know that.
Nope.
So anyway.
Important parts of this story.
It's super important.
I'm glad we've gone there
underage drink
so I had a turnip
on my belt
and
no so I get there
and it is
absolute deluge
like completely
it's a downpour
yep
and I thought
maybe
the whole meet and greet
thing was like
inside the bar
oh no
no no no
it was outside
everyone's lined up
down the street
to see this thing
and they're all soaked
and I drive by them
and they're soaked
and I have
I'm like okay
I want to like film this
I brought my camera
that's out
I'm not
I'm not taking that
out of the bag even
okay
well I want my phone
well no
that's gonna get ruined too
my mom calls
and she finds out
I'm in the area
and she's like
oh come down the street
I got a rain jacket
I can give you
I'm like
mom
shout out mom
so I go and get the rain jacket
come back up
and I wait in line
your mom has an interesting
tone of voice
I just wanna say
oh
Steven I'm your mother
it's a condition Adam
how dare you
I'm sorry
she's got stereotypical mom
voice itis
oh
come in out of the rain and have a warm lasagna
take this blanket
you didn't say stereotypical Italian
mom is itis
am I right
gotta have a warm lasagna
so
get my jacket and I'm like okay I'll just wait in line
and the line takes like forever
right and I'm also wasting time
by like going down the street to get this jacket
I didn't realize
Devontae Smith-Pelly wasn't going to be taking pictures anymore
after 4.30
so when I get to the front I'm like
where'd he go
oh he's gone
how long did you wait in line
honestly like probably an hour, hour and a half
I did like a Instagram live stream
to kill the time
no because I was going to make it into a thing
and then I was going to make it into a video
and then I get to the front and there's nothing there
I bet that was interesting
it was super interesting man
what thing were you going to make it into
I
so
Smith Pelly and I
follow each other
so I was hoping to maybe
get an interview
on what
and all that
on Twitter
okay
which I can't use that anymore
but
I
yeah
I thought I was gonna maybe
Jesse
the attempt to get a cool thing
okay
does not take away
okay listen
just cause it didn't happen
I tried
I freaking tried
I tried my best
alright
why you gonna dump on me
for the shitty effort
I mean
I tried
there's a couple things here
Number one, you work for the number one sports organization in the country
Yeah, but I didn't want to
Sports media
I didn't want to do it that way, though
No, you want to wait in line for 90 minutes to get to the front of the line
No, man, it's got to be authentic
Yeah, kind of
What are you, a hipster hockey guy?
No, I just didn't want to be one of those
I'm with the media while people are standing out there soaked in the rain
I wanted to be soaked in the rain as well
So you got nothing
Yeah, listen
You got nothing because you didn't want to jump the queue of a couple hundred people
so you could entertain thousands.
Don't make me argue that I was right knowing that I'm wrong.
I know I goofed up.
And also, did you bother to DM him before?
I did, and he said maybe, which that's fine.
He doesn't know.
So at least he responded.
That's cool.
Yeah, and I knew he was going to be busy.
It was a private event at the Black Dog.
There were a few people who I noticed there, and I got to talk to them.
The Stewart brothers were there, Chris and Anthony
Oh nice
Chris Kern, NHLer, Anthony Former
And I think there were a bunch of other folks there
A bunch of folks I recognized from high school
But yeah, that's it
That's all I got
Now Jesse asked, did I touch the Stanley Cup?
And my answer was an emphatic
No, I did not
touch the Stanley Cup
Why?
Why didn't you touch the Stanley Cup?
Because what if I jinx the Leafs, Jesse?
What if?
Tell me how that makes sense
I cheer for the Leafs
I touch the cup
I'm not supposed to touch the cup
Therefore I'd be jinxing them
It is real
And affects them
No that's sound logic
Yeah
Just like watching from his couch
Versus anyone else's
Would have changed the outcome
Of the Boston Bruins series
I still say someone moved
And that's why they lost
Someone moved
And
Jake Gardner's play fell off a cliff
And Freddie couldn't stop anything
It was like someone stuck a
Like a voodoo doll needle
Right through his head
That's exactly what happened
It's all because they moved a popcorn bowl
A quarter of an inch to the left
And that's why the Leafs lost game 7
I'm going to make a definitive list of things Steve came away with
That day
1. He got soaked
2. His mom carries a raincoat
Ah, great lasagna from his mom's house
That's also true
I didn't get any food
3. Wasted 90 minutes of his life
Four
Not a picture with DSP
Five
Not a
You got a picture with the Stanley Cup?
Yeah he did
I got a picture with the Stanley Cup
Alright
Which by the way
So I wait in line all that time
I get my picture with the Stanley Cup
And then they're like alright next
And I just stand to the side
And I'm like
Where do I get my picture?
Where's the picture?
And they're like oh
Oh you gotta go to his website
And I'm like oh
Okay cool
So it was up on
Devante Smith-Pelly's website later on
Did you see it?
I saw it. It's I forgot to take off the rain jacket
So I'm just wearing my uncle's rain jacket in this stupid-ass picture with the Washington Capitals flag behind it
No
It is an Italian uncle, but on the English side, okay? It's complicated. I would Jesse
I hope I hope his picture and this will only work for the YouTube. Oh, yeah
Steve like this
Can you make one?
Yeah, can you make...
What's Devante Smith-Pelly's website?
I don't know.
Google Devante Smith-Pelly website.
It's not coming up.
I don't know.
Mrs. Dangle found it.
I didn't bother looking for it.
I typed it in.
Not even coming up.
So you didn't get the picture either.
No, I did get the picture.
I tweeted it here.
Did you tweet it?
No, I deleted it off my phone, so...
I can't find it.
It's on my Twitter.
It's probably...
Go on media.
Jesse, you probably could find...
I just might think it might be a waste of your day.
It might have been a waste of my day.
Also, screw every major news organization in the city
for, like, parking right on the friggin' corner.
It's like this tight residential street,
and, like, I'm not going to single anyone out,
because it was all of them.
Oh, yeah, so I forgot to mention this part.
The mayor was there.
The mayor of Toronto.
Oh, I was about to say, which city?
Was there.
But he didn't show up to Tom Wilson's.
Interesting.
No, I don't know.
I don't know.
He might have.
So apparently he said something about handguns that morning
and then didn't give a comment.
And everyone, it was basically, well, if you want a comment from him,
you're going to have to go to where he is, which is this event today.
So everyone on top of, oh, we'll get this cool sports story.
The Stanley Cup was in Toronto today.
And also we talked to Mayor John Tory about guns.
And it was just a mess.
So here's the other thing that I struggle with.
I struggle with lining up to see the Stanley Cup
when it's available all the time
at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Like, if you're from California
and it's in your neighborhood,
I get that.
But we literally,
I live several blocks from where the Stanley Cup is
90% of the time.
I thought I'd be able to meet the man,
the myth, the legend, DSP.
I mean, that's cool, but like...
Wait, why do you have to meet him?
I just thought I could ask him a couple questions for...
If I'm there and I'm in front of him,
I'm going to be able to go,
hey, man, like, can I borrow you for three minutes?
Which is fine.
And not now, but later.
Also, I don't think that's going to happen.
The man is there to take pictures with people.
Yeah, but I...
You got to give it a shot.
No, once he's done taking pictures with people,
then you go, hey, man, you got a minute.
So you were going to wait around until the event was done.
I gave it a shot.
Also, I wanted to go back to my old neighborhood.
See, I don't mind that.
I don't mind that.
That's okay.
I get that.
You know, you're trying to get some content.
I understand that.
And no, I didn't go in there with my Sportsnet badge.
Excuse me, everyone.
I'm different than you.
But I had spoken to the person, and he said maybe.
So I went there on a maybe.
And I didn't get it.
Sometimes you come up empty-handed.
Again.
That's life.
So that's always the thing that...
But I didn't...
I wasn't empty-handed.
I got to meet cool people.
No, that's cool.
I got to meet people in the lineup.
I'm sure.
I got a notification today that I'm at my data limit.
So apparently it was a long IG live stream. How many people tuned in? Lots? I'm sure a lot. It was it was a bunch
I don't I don't have the final number. It was a good bunch. It's a solid bushel
Did you throw the video up on your YouTube channel?
No, you should. You wanna monetize it?
Download and throw it up on YouTube.
I don't know if it's relevant enough for YouTube. I don't know. Okay, Jesse's the social media expert. He's telling me to do that
Maybe I'll do that. Hey, I got carpet today
So I'm gonna go back to shooting videos very soon because the basement is almost complete and Jesse found the picture
And I'm surprised you're not laughing yet
Shut the hell up with my khaki rain jacket
Yeah, show that show the camera stupid. Oh, it's you with Andrew. Yeah. Okay. Well now it now I like it
Because someone else is in it
You like it
I saw it
I was like
Oh that's nice
But here's the thing
You can see the Stanley Cup
If you're from Toronto
Any time of the year
For like 20 bucks
In the warmth
Oh I know
Or air conditioning
I wasn't gonna
I wasn't gonna get out of line
Once I realized
I'm like okay
Well I've been waiting here
I'm soaked
Oh I might as well
Just go home now
I'm just gonna drive back
To Oshawa and sulk
Right
Okay.
All right.
And also, I waited for a little while after I got my picture to see if he'd respond.
He didn't respond.
Whatever.
He was busy.
He was having his day with the cup.
I don't begrudge him.
Yeah, absolutely.
He was having a whale of a time.
Devante Smith-Pelly is a great Instagram follow.
Really?
I should follow him.
All the Caps anarchy, like the day of the parade and everything, he was a super underrated
follow.
Bunch of really cool stories and stuff.
He posted a story of
There was a girl drinking out of the Stanley Cup
But like upside down and backwards
It just seems like the best thing ever
To win the Stanley Cup
And God I'm jealous
I'm sure they had a blast with it honestly
Okay
Wayne Gretzky
Yes
I'm so behind
When was the last time you heard Wayne Gretzky in the news for anything?
What's the last Wayne Gretzky related?
Maybe when I met him for that Canadian Tire thing
It was the Edmonton Oilers
reunion thingy
that they brought back
to all the players.
Also known as
their management team.
The Father's Day campaign
that I helped out with.
Ah.
Yes.
That's right, me too.
What was that?
It was for
because he's got a whiskey.
Wayne Gretzky Estates.
Ah.
So they did a campaign.
His dad is Walter
and he talked about
how his dad was awesome
growing up.
So the campaign was about
like who was your Walter?
My Walter.
My dad was my Walter.
My two.
There you go.
So everyone's dad
is their Walter.
Well, not necessarily.
It doesn't have to be your dad.
What a great campaign.
It is.
Your mom could be your Walter, I guess.
Yeah.
Or your uncle or whatever.
Your dog.
Absolutely.
Iggy is my Walter.
I don't know.
What do you think about Wayne Gretzky representing a KHL team?
Okay, yeah.
I'm going in totally cold on this one.
I haven't heard this story at all.
Okay, so Wayne Gretzky is the official global ambassador.
Like Drake.
For the Chinese KHL team, Kunlun Red Star.
That's cool.
Okay.
Yeah.
Now, they're based out of Beijing,
and this is to help raise the profile of hockey in China
ahead of the 2022 Olympics.
They're trying to develop the game in China.
At least they're trying.
Now, this says a couple things to me.
First, they're trying to get young people involved in hockey in China.
Okay.
Is Wayne the guy?
What makes you say young?
That's what they say in the press release.
They said they want young people.
They want to get young people into it.
Is Wayne the guy you choose?
No.
Wayne is not the guy I choose.
Not at all.
No offense to Wayne.
No, but like that is...
Dude, we talk about Matt Sundin on this show.
And like, oh man, remember that 2002 run?
And there's people who were like, dude, I was like...
I was born that year.
I was not born.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Exactly.
And Gretzky retired in 99.
Gretzky will focus on youth development in China,
including a planned KRS Gretzky Hockey School,
which is cool.
That will provide advanced training
for players 8 to 17 in Beijing
and the Southern Tech Hub of Sichuan,
the whole province,
eventually expanding to at least 20 locations nationwide,
which is very cool.
Yeah.
Sorry, just another thing on Gretzky.
Like, do you remember Prime Gretzky?
No, you don't.
No.
You weren't alive.
No.
Neither of us were alive,
and we're both 30 years old.
Like, we don't remember Prime Gretzky.
That was probably, I would say, 35 years ago, 34 years ago.
Like 85, 86 when he was scoring like 200 a year.
It's just bonkers.
Yeah, we don't remember prime Gretzky.
So anyone younger than us is, we're already useless,
and they're just absolutely hopeless.
They don't remember a thing.
This also says, so for the second year,
the NHL is holding a promotional game in China.
The Boston Bruins and Calgary Flames will be in Szechuan.
Oh, sorry, Szechuan.
I said Szechuan.
I don't know.
It's Sension?
Cheshwan is a sauce.
I was about to say Rick and Morty.
Dude, I didn't even challenge it because I'm like,
maybe that's where the sauce is from.
No, it is.
It's Sension.
Sorry, my bad.
Sension.
I read it wrong.
September 15th and in Beijing, September 19th.
So they're going to play two promotional games there.
They did that last year, Canucks and someone.
The second thing this tells me is that the NHL is absolutely going to China
for the Olympics.
Ah, interesting.
Well, I mean, that was...
No, their plan the whole time has been to go to the Olympics in China.
I don't think that was ever up for debate.
It's the IOC, or the double IHF, I can't remember which one,
who was like, no, no, no, no, no.
You can't just skip one and then show up a couple years later.
And I think Gary Bettman's going to say, yeah, we can.
And I think Gary Bettman's going to be right.
I think so, too.
What, are they going to turn him down?
What, are they allergic to money?
I'm sorry.
Like, let's just be straight.
The Olympics, how much Olympic hockey did you watch
from this...
You know what?
The Olympic hockey
that I did watch
was awesome.
Sure.
It was fun
because I tuned into
a few great games.
The hockey was not marvelous.
But let's talk about...
Forget about the quality of play.
Most fans don't care
about the quality of play.
Most fans do not care.
Let's be...
No, seriously.
It's a bold take.
Oh, it's true.
Come on.
You think the fans
really care too much?
It's the names
that sell the game here.
Do you want to see
a guy who was drafted
in the sixth round
who didn't quite cut it?
play for Team Canada, or do you want to see Sidney Crosby play for Canada?
There were basically no names.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, is it Mason Raymond that you want to see?
Or is it Sidney Crosby?
Yes, first of all, yes.
Right.
Second of all, yes.
So if you're a hockey nerd, and everybody, I understand everybody going to the Olympics said,
you shouldn't denigrate these guys, and I'm not denigrating them,
but let's not pretend that that star power not being there didn't affect it.
Like 5% of hockey fans even know who 10% of these guys are.
Show me the ratings.
Show me the television ratings.
Now, I know they were in the middle of the night, but show me the television ratings and tell me that there wasn't a noticeable, discernible difference.
Yeah, but if there's a gold medal game on Canada with Crosby, McDavid, etc. versus the States, if that's on at 11 at night, people are watching that.
I think they're going to watch it.
Wait, what?
No, you were talking about how it was at night.
Yeah.
So disadvantage
Which is true
But if all the big names
Are there
And it's on 11 at night
Yes
Oh yeah
You make a time of it
Sochi was on like
Early in the morning
We watched it
Nagano was too
Sure
Well now you're going back
To when I was 10 years old
I got up early
Well
4am
If the guys are there
You're watching no matter what
Totally
Yeah
It's like having the World Cup
Without Ronaldo and Messi
Like I
I'm sorry
But you just
You don't throw a World Cup
And I
I think
I think what's interesting about this is the
double IHF
is trying to play
tough guy here and I think
the NHL is going to win
I haven't heard them say anything else
well of course we won't hear anything until the lockout's over
but what I find
extremely interesting about this is
I wonder what it does
to international hockey if the NHL wins
this one
as in they get everything they want
and they sort of bully the double IHF
and maybe the IOC as well and say
all right well we won't send our players well hopefully it ends up being the right call like
listen okay well i know i wonder if the nhl though becomes more of a global power and and relegates
the double ihf to secondary status which it might already be anyway it already is like what decisions
do they make that anyone cares about nhl isn't even double ihf rules who cares seriously who
cares the nhl players have to bend to the double ihf rules at the olympics and that's it and then
when they start playing in the nhl we're like ah back to real hockey thank goodness you know i my
hatred for the nhl in skipping the uh korea olympics is well documented but they're going
to come out on top and they're probably going to come out right uh they're going to come out
having no pushback from the
IOC. There's
going to be some posturing and all that, but ultimately
they're going to go.
There's going to be anticipation
because, oh, the NHL is
back! And
hockey's going to be more popular
after it. They're going to
come out the winners. There is
no justice.
Sorry, everybody. I wish there was.
I wish
Sidney Crosby dumped
Gary Bettman's head
in the toilet
and give him a swirly
but it's just
not going to happen
the bad guys win
oh of course
do you remember
leading up to
this past Olympics
there were all that
talk about
oh Ovechkin's
going to boycott
the NHL
and those games
he's going to go
to Sochi
and play for them
and all the Russian
athletes
they're going to
go over there
and some Canadians
are even going to
go play for them
none of that happened
and everyone's just like
okay we're going to
play our games
we're not going
and Russia won gold
and Ovechkin won
anyway yeah what justice none there's
no and by the way we're talking about
like it's all NHL good guy IOC or sorry
NHL bad guy IOC good guy it got brought
up I think it was by Greg Wyshynski the
other day like whenever like okay when
Jerome McGinley retired the other day
the golden goal where he sets up Crosby
they're showing pictures you know why
because they won't give away those
rights. Bunch of rotten
jerks. They both suck.
And I'm going to watch every game.
IOC, IHF, NHL, it's
like three bad guys fighting each other.
You're not, there is no good
guy in this situation. It's heel versus heel.
Yeah. Except none of them can work a mic.
They all stink!
It stinks!
Imagine a conversation between Rene Fussell
and Gary Vettman.
Both lawyeristic.
I mean, Gary's actually a lawyer.
I don't know if Rene Fussell is. And both
Extremely boring.
I hate that I know Rene Fussell's name.
Like, I hate that I know who you're talking about
when you say his name.
I hate that I can picture him.
I don't...
Yet I couldn't tell you who the...
Off the top of my head, anyway,
who the leading scorer in the Swedish Elite League
was last year.
Or the KHL.
And I should know that.
I should...
I can look that up.
Franz Ferdinand.
Ah!
Yes.
Si.
Si.
That's how on top the NHL is
and how far down the rung every other league is.
and that's why the NHL is going to win.
They're going to get their way
and they're going to go.
Yeah, and do you think that China
is going to be cool?
They paid all this money for the Olympics.
I don't know.
They did all this work for the Olympics
and the IOC is going to say,
sorry, we couldn't come to an agreement
with the NHL.
The Chinese government is going to go,
well, then figure it out.
Yeah, because of the posturing.
Pay them what they want.
Bring the stars.
They'll figure it out.
The NHL will be at the Olympics in 2022.
Does Wayne Gretzky get to play for China?
He does not get to play for China.
Is that, that's not part of his contract?
No, no.
He doesn't get to play for the Chinese Olympic team?
No.
Probably will.
See, if I was Wayne Gretzky, I would write that into my contract.
I get some sort of citizenship.
I don't think Wayne wants to do that.
Okay.
If Wayne Gretzky was on the Chinese Olympic team, is he the best player?
No.
Today?
No, they've got some good young players, man.
You'd be surprised.
There's a couple of phenoms coming out of Japan, too.
Yep.
What percentage of peak Wayne Gretzky is Wayne Gretzky right now?
He is probably.
Maybe a percent
Absolutely not
One percent
No
Nope
That's a big old
If he's been on his skates
Six times in the last year
I'd be surprised
He's not
Gary Roberts
Like just
Fitness man
Picking up heavy stuff
And putting it back down
Like every day
Like no
He's a
He's like a dad
How many
How many professional
Hockey players
At an elite level
Are on the Chinese
Olympic team
At an elite level
Say that again
How many elite level
professional hockey players
are on the Chinese
Olympic team?
Oh,
I can't think of any.
Zero.
Is Cliff Poo Chinese?
He's Canadian,
is he not?
No way.
So,
he might get on
because of one of those,
like,
he's got ancestry,
sort of,
it's like your parents
need to be
or your grandparents,
something like that.
I mean,
he's from Richmond Hill.
You can do that.
Brad Hall is a perfect example
of a guy who did that.
Yeah.
You can do that.
Well,
and a number of Canadian
Go and play for Germany
And England
Yep
Yep
Absolutely it happens
I just don't think
Cliff Pooh's gonna do that
Something tells me
The Islanders have a draft pick
Who's from China
Like actually from China
I don't know man
Dude
Wayne Gretzky's like
He's like 47
Or something like that
And he's not
Jager 47
He's
I haven't really done
A whole hell of a lot
Since 1999
47
Actually he's probably
Older than 47
If he stopped playing in 99
Yep.
Come on, Jesse.
Come on now.
This guy?
Look at him!
Come on, man.
You want to give him a hug.
You don't want to play hockey against him.
I think you don't.
If you're the greatest player to ever do something,
how much of that are you losing in 15 years?
So let's ask Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to play for Team Canada.
Okay, the answer is almost instantly.
How dare you?
They are, all right.
It's a different country who's not good at basketball.
They're actually good.
They're very good now, yeah.
The answer, Jesse, is almost instantly.
You're training to be the best every day.
You wake up best.
Lunchtime, best.
Go to bed, best.
Hit the ice, best.
If you're the best at anything, you're constantly working to be the best.
Yeah.
And you're honing those skills.
He's not just hopping on the ice with no practice.
We're giving him four years.
He'll be four years older.
No, but he's training.
He doesn't want to do that
Modern medicine
He doesn't want to do that
We can rebuild him
Let's say he wants to do this
If Wayne Gretzky wants to come back
And his decision is
I'm going to play for the Chinese Olympic team
And this is going to be my comeback
In China, Olympics 2022
I'm going to play on the fourth line Chinese Olympic team
This is insulting to Chinese hockey
He can't even do it?
Yes he can
Okay, okay.
Jesse's, how much further does this conversation have to go
before Jesse goes, okay, you're telling me Cyber Gretzky
wouldn't make fourth line?
Cyber Gretzky from Mars.
Yeah, Borg Gretzky is not going to play fourth line
for the Chinese hockey team.
I think we saw Michael Jordan retire twice and come back
at ridiculous ages and just not play basketball.
Okay, but he didn't leave athletics.
all together
and I refuse to believe
the second time
he did
and then he came back
and played for the Wizards
and he was terrible
but he could still
play in the NBA
yeah but I refuse to believe
he just stopped
training
all together
I refuse to believe
that Wayne Gretzky
can't hop on skates
and still be decent
he could
destroy
most rec leagues
still
yeah
probably
every rec league
in the world
ask anybody
in their late 40s
how their body feels
just generally
when they wake up
in the morning
like talking about
like rotation and talking about your hips and your knees and like all the things that go into hockey
you know the the amount of ankle damage that you get from playing hockey for 30 or 40 years
regularly like it like being an athlete is not good for you by the way it's terrible for your
body it's horrendous i met bobby bond who is like an old man elder he's in his 80s and i just you
look at him and
he's still got that twinkle in his eye but it just
looks like every joint
in his body
is so sore. Johnny Bauer
God rest his soul
he like couldn't bend
his fingers. Watch Shaq
walk. I
can't picture him dance
that's it. He can dance better than he can
walk man. You ever seen
him walk on that TNT set? He can't walk
I want to hug his knees
I want to help him. Every sport is bad
for your knees.
Totally.
Name one sport
that's good for your knees.
Elliptical.
Like Olympic elliptical.
Is that a thing?
That's it.
It's terrible.
Anyway, Jesse.
I think
You're wrong.
I love you.
Yeah, you're
underestimating
the skill of Wayne Gretzky
at this age
if you gave him
four years of practice.
I think he could crack
an Olympic team.
First of all, no.
Second of all,
I don't remember
which one of you it was.
I think it was you
brought up a great point.
It's going to be interesting
to see who is
like
obviously not
Chinese born
but is able to
play for China
because like
South Korea
was just like
this Matt Johnson
or whatever his name was
because he's lived here
for a couple years
can play for our team
yeah and it's like
you're obviously
not going to
crack team Canada
so why not
go for your
parents country
or your grandparents
country
and do that
and be an Olympian
and the Olympics
are less than
four years away
so the people
who are going to
do that
are going to
head there
relatively soon
I'm excited to see
who does it
you know
You know, Dylan Larkin has tweeted that there are some contract-related things coming.
Wait, what?
I'm sorry, he didn't tweet it.
He said, something's coming.
Larkin promised Tuesday afternoon, this is a Luke Fox article on Sportsnet.ca,
following an intense skills training session alongside Connor McDavid and other NHLers.
He said, I've been told everyone I think, I've told everyone I think it'll be before training camp.
It's right there.
I'm just waiting to iron out the details.
What does a skills camp between Conor McDavid and Dylan Larkin look like?
Is it just two blurs going back and forth, like Goku fighting Vegeta?
Like, just two different color blurs?
I think so. I think so.
And I wonder what that contract looks like, because, you know, we're talking about William Nylander.
I mean, is Dylan Larkin not a pretty good comparable?
Can you look up his numbers?
Well, I will. I'm doing that right now.
But I also think, too, Dylan Larkin, you could argue,
is more important to the Red Wings than William Nylander is to the Leafs.
You know what?
Maybe.
And you know what's funny is the past few shows,
whenever the Red Wings have come up,
I realize I know so little about them
because they just haven't been a factor in the National Hockey League
for like two years.
Right.
So Dylan Larkin for the last—
It's true.
They have not been relevant in the National Hockey League.
And that's of their own choice.
Yeah.
The decisions that they currently make.
You can't know every team inside and out.
And if you're going to let a couple teams drop off,
that's a pretty good choice over the past couple years.
So Dylan Larkin.
No offense.
The last three years.
34 points, 37 points, 61 points last year.
And he's played all but four games over those last three seasons.
So he's played three full seasons.
Three full seasons.
Whereas Nylander's just got the two and a half.
Two and a half.
But his first crack at 60,
I mean, Nylander has two 61-point seasons in a row.
Larkin's got one.
Larkin's got what again?
Really has better numbers.
34, 37, 61.
Yeah, I mean, I think, listen,
I think he's the lower end comparable.
Yeah.
I don't think you're giving...
But I also think it's interesting.
I think you pay more when your team sucks.
My theory is that if Dylan Larkin's your guy
and he really is their guy,
like even if Tennessee didn't really...
I don't think he's worked out the way they hoped he would.
I think they were seeing him as like a power forward,
dominant in the NHL.
Oh, I was furious when the Red Wings drafted him.
I thought he was going to be sick.
And he's good.
He still might be.
Yeah, but he's not.
It doesn't look like he's going to be the showstopper that we thought he would be.
Right.
He's going to be a, you know, he could be a nice guy to have in your bottom six.
He's got some skill, maybe like a shootout specialist sort of guy.
But I look at, let's have a look at daily faceoff.
Dylan Larkin is a center, so that ups his value already.
and then
you got the fact that
Detroit is not deep
at any position.
Damn.
They are good at nothing.
He broke 20 goals once.
And he,
Henrik Zetterberg,
like right now,
Tyler Bertuzzi,
Dylan Larkin,
and Anthony Mantha
are your top,
top line.
That's the top line?
Followed by
Vanek Zetterberg
and maybe Zedina.
Okay.
That's what daily is.
Now.
What do they have?
It has Bertuzzi,
Tyler Bertuzzi,
Dylan Larkin,
and Anthony Mantha.
I think Philip Zadina
is going to replace
Anthony Mantha
on that top line
I'm just throwing that out there
I like Mantha
I think Zadina's
no but I think Zadina
needs like a high end playmaker
I would also even like
throw out Vanek
on the first line
just if that's your
Tyler Bertuzzi is not
a first line player
right now
Andreas Athanasiu
Franz Nielsen
and Gustav Nyquist
on the third
and then Abdelkader
Glenn Danning
and Hill
it's funny because
like you just reading
that roster out loud
it's not bad
it doesn't register
as awful
because a lot of those guys were touted as guys who,
like, watch, they're only going to get better.
And then a bunch of them didn't.
Like, remember what a monster Gustav Nyquist was
when he came into the league?
Huge.
Crazy.
He had that, what, 20-game streak.
It was something like that.
That was the last Mike Babcock season,
and they went on that crazy run to make the playoffs one more time.
Yeah, because of him.
Yeah.
He dragged, like, if he just kept that going,
if he continued to be that monster,
It's an unsustainable thing, but if you're like three-quarters of it.
And now he's 28 and not getting better.
Which year was that?
I don't think he even, oh my God, it must have been that one.
13-14 in 57 games, he had 28 goals, 20 assists, 48 points.
Since then?
What a monster.
Since then, he had 27 goals the next season,
but that was a full 82-game season,
followed by 17, 12, and last year, 21.
Okay.
So he's somewhere in the early 20s in goal scoring.
Yeah, but you see a guy score, what is it, 28 goals in 57 games.
That's roughly like a 40-goal pace, something like that.
And you go, well, maybe he's consistently 30.
And he's just not that.
And you could go, and you need guys like that,
but you just go up and down that whole roster.
But he's a third-line guy.
You watch Darren Helm is going to wreck world.
Nope.
No.
This guy and that guy and that guy.
I think whatever William Nylander's contract is,
and I think it's going to be between 6 and 6.25 per year.
I think it's going to be the full 8.
I think they're going full bore on this one.
I think both Larkin and Nylander start with a 6.
Absolutely.
But I don't...
I almost wonder if Dylan Larkin maybe makes a little bit more
because Dylan Larkin is the only guy.
Nylander is...
I hope so.
Let's be honest.
On the depth chart of the top players on this team,
in terms of forwards, right?
We're not counting defense in this.
Nylander's fourth right now.
Uh, arguably.
Yeah, some people might put him above Marner.
Some people, yeah, okay, fine.
So maybe tied for third.
Regardless.
Tavares and Matthews and, yeah.
Dylan Larkin, because Henrik Zetterberg's not Henrik Zetterberg anymore.
Dylan Larkin's number one.
And he's going to retire, like, any minute now.
Yeah.
Yeah?
Yeah.
And the whole thing about bad teams is you have to pay someone.
You have to get to the floor.
Yes, you do.
You have to get the minimum.
Dude, look at the Leafs.
You have to give anybody money.
They might be near the cap, though.
The Red Wings have spent poorly.
But
It's very true
They get spent very poorly
They pay everyone
You have to pay someone
They pay literally everyone
Yeah you gotta
You gotta pay everyone
Justin applicator
Everyone to get something
Dude look at
The contracts that the Leafs
Handed out
FNUF
Like imagine
Like Kessel
Imagine those Leafs
Without FNUF though
Oh brutal
Matt Henrik was his line mate
Yeah alright
Go ahead and do it without me
Go ahead and put someone else
Next to Mike Koska
all right dion when you put it that way here's 7.1 million dollars yeah yeah yep phil we're not
going to give you eight million dollars okay you throw someone else out there tell you what phil
here's eight million dollars that we're just going to retain on almost immediately
have fun winning cups with a better team we're going to pay you 1.2 million dollars to win two
cups in a row literally literally what happened and then and then this is i don't know who it was
that convinced morgan riley and nazem kadri that they were worth five and four point five
blue amorello with a gun in his hand or something like those are amazing deals and when they signed
them the team was garbage garbage so bad the leafs are very which in that situation probably helped
that they were bad
yeah
the lower
because they were
younger and unproven
they weren't
fun off at the time
well and with Nas
I remember seeing
the 4.5 and going
boy I hope he lives
up to that
because he was
coming off the worst
season of his career
I just want to
run through some
of the Detroit
contracts for you
oh boy
I love this game
that we play sometimes
oh my god
we've done this
we have done this
and I think we've
done this with Detroit
so Zetterberg
even if he retires
I believe they still
have to pay him
because he's got
one of those weird deals
no he should get
Sick.
Oh, how dare you?
Jesse, what if he's allergic to his equipment for the first time after 17 years?
How dare you?
After 17 years, just when we're about to go over, oh, thank goodness for this allergy.
What if Henrik's leg Zeta breaks?
You're going to hell for that alone.
The Hosa thing is one of my, again, I bring them up.
Like we're Toronto fans.
We can't exactly poke too much fun.
No, we have a whole island.
We have a whole island.
I'm bringing him up again, but Greg Wyshynski,
he won't let the Marian Hossa thing go.
And he's like, okay, two things can be true here at the same time.
He's allergic to his equipment, and the contract is utter shenanigans.
Both are true.
Whereas Zetterberg, and we would have to look it up,
but I remember we talked about it on the show at one point.
Didn't he straight up say to a Swedish newspaper,
like, oh, yeah, I'm retiring this year.
And you're like, what?
Beg your pardon, sir.
There's actually like two years left on your contract.
Oh, well, you don't want to play for a million dollars
because that was the plan the whole time.
By the way, he signed that deal.
Like, no wonder those contracts are illegal.
He signed that deal in 2009, 2010.
His salary, his actual salary this year,
and here's why he's retiring.
Still going.
He's got $3.5 million to make next year.
After that, it's $1 million and $1 million
for the next two seasons.
Henry Zetterberg goodbye tour, everybody.
Yeah, the cap hit is $6 million.
but he's making
only 3.35.
Prime Henrik
Zetterberg was
six million bucks
against the cap.
Prime Henrik
Zetterberg.
Yeah.
Yep.
Travesty.
Yep.
Prime Duncan
Keith, 5.1.
What was the
percentage of cap?
Yeah, it was much
bigger, man.
everyone's like,
oh my god,
Crosby's only
8.7, but his
percentage of the
cap is like a few
percentage points
lower than McDavid's
currently is.
When he signed that
deal, that was a
big contract.
That's fat.
That's a fat
contract.
Still
And it was what
12 years
He was so good
He primed Zetterberg
Was so good
He made 70
He's gonna make
71 million dollars
Of the 73
He was promised
Yeah
Minus those two
Unless he
Unless he develops
An allergy to bees
And they trade him to Arizona
Where there are no bees
I'm sure there are bees
In Arizona
I was like
Where's
What
Who needs
I'm allergic to auto parts
Oh we'll trade you
To Arizona then
You know what's gonna be great
Is when the coyotes
Do this again
next year.
They're going to win a cup on this, man.
It's unbelievable.
You don't think so?
The Arizona Coyotes.
The Cup Yotes is what you're going to call them.
Wow.
They're going to win a Stanley Cup.
Yeah, the Cup Yotes.
Alright.
You think your dog
leaves out of a silver bowl?
They drink out of a silver cup because they're the Cup Yotes.
The era Stanley Cup Yotes.
No.
It's great.
The Aristale and Cappiotis.
And they did it all.
And they're going to do it all.
Place the cup above his head.
C etched into his helmet.
I'm pretty sure, by the way,
pretty sure that
his contract still counts against the cap
even if he retires.
Am I right on that?
Yeah.
No.
No?
Pretty sure no.
Why not?
I don't remember.
But he's got one of those weird back-loaded ones.
Yeah.
I thought those counted.
Because, like, Hosa, that's why the Coyotes have Hosa and Dave Bolin.
But Dave Bolin signed after.
He signed after the lockout.
Oh, no, but you just do the same thing,
where you send them to the Era Cup.
Era Stanley Cup Biotis.
After this season, Bolin's 5.5 comes off,
so the Coyotes will need some more.
They will need to get to the floor.
We need some more money.
There you go.
No, you're right.
You're in Zetterberg.
They don't have Pronger anymore either.
They don't.
Coyote's legend Pronger.
Chris Pronger.
That cap recapture thing is confusing.
Yeah, I don't know.
Somebody will know.
We need to get cap friendly on.
Interestingly.
So anyway, that's just Zetterberg.
But let's have a look at some of the other deals.
Okay, so Zetterberg.
We were doing that.
Yeah, so Franz Nielsen is 34 years old right now.
No.
Yes.
Franz Nielsen
has a modified
no trade
and a no move clause.
Remember when that was
like fancy?
Yeah.
And like no one had it?
Hell.
Franz Nielsen
is making 5.25
until he's 38.
2022.
Now,
he'll lose one of those years
because of the pending lockout.
No!
Even after the lockout's done,
he's going to make
5 million dollars.
Put that evil on me,
Ricky Bobby.
Gustav Nyquist,
who needs to be
re-signed next year,
he's making 4.75
million. Don't think he's going to make that much
after next year.
What was he getting?
If he's a consistent 20 goal scorer, yeah.
I think he gets about that.
Justin Abdelkader.
31. Left wing, right wing.
No trade clause.
Full no trade. Unreal.
4.25 million
dollars every single year
until 2022-2023.
When he'll be 36.
Johan
Franzen. On the IR.
Another one of those goofy deals.
This is IR, though.
Well, and he's legitimately, like,
can't play. Yeah, he's actually, like, yeah.
Darren Hill.
Okay. He can play center, left wing, and right wing,
and that's why they gave him a no-trade clause as well.
Didn't he score a hat-trick
against the Leafs? I'm sure he did.
Everybody did at one point.
$3.85 million.
He's 31. He'll make that until he's 34.
So, three more seasons.
You know what? Because of
all the other ones
you just listed off
I'm like
that's not bad
if that deal
was on the Leafs
it would be the thing
that everybody
he would be their
he'd be the
Connor Brown
I don't
nobody hates
Connor Brown's contract
but everybody seems
to dump on
Connor Brown
and I'm completely
in total disagreement
with you on that
by the way
you know how many
people
I love Connor Brown
kick the internet
door down going
I hate that contract
stupid
Darren Helm
3.85 million dollars
and then Anthony Mantha
has got a good term
3.3 for the next
two years. Thomas Vanek just
re-signed for the one year for $3 million.
At Fantasy, he's got $6 million over the
next two. And then you get into the Luke Glenn
Denning, so it's $1.8 million for
three more years of Luke Glenn
Denning. You just don't need to do that.
You don't need to do that. Can we play
a game? Yeah. Can we pause? Okay.
Play a game? Yep. Alright. Since
being traded from the Buffalo Sabres,
name all of the
teams that Thomas Vanek played for.
Ooh! Adam Wild and
Steve Diggle. So he was on the
black, gray, and red Buffalo Sabres.
Mm-hmm.
With the funny logo,
the terrible logo.
They had an old red jersey
at one point.
He was traded then to the Islanders.
Yes.
Nailed it.
Who then flipped him.
That's actually where the curse
of everything happening
after the podcast happened.
It was the Thomas Vanik trade
to the Islanders.
That's where it started.
Because he was traded to the Islanders
for far too much.
Ten minutes after the show ended.
Like, it was ridiculous.
Far too much.
And then he signed
a big, fat, ridiculous contract
with the Wild.
No, no, no.
Before that, he was flipped to Montreal.
In between that, Steve is correct.
When was he flipped to Montreal?
The next season?
The same season.
That same season.
Because New York fell out of it.
Yeah.
And he just fell off a cliff.
Then, no, I think before he went to Minnesota,
he was with someone else.
Who was it?
Adam's more right.
Oh, Adam's more right.
So it was then Minnesota.
And it was a pretty big contract, wasn't it?
Was it the Islanders he signed a big fat extension with?
He just kept getting traded at the deadline
Yeah
Yeah, so you guys have got
The timeline correct
So it was Buffalo
Then flipped to the Islanders
Then same season flipped to Canadians
Then that offseason he signs with Minnesota
Right
Plays till the 2016 offseason with Minnesota
Then he signs with
Detroit
There you go
Oh, it was Detroit
And then what happens?
He was traded to
Who was he traded to?
Vancouver
No
Not yet
Not yet
Not yet
Right, because he did go to Vancouver.
Why did he go to Vancouver?
Detroit traded him to someone.
Wasn't he like a non-factor?
It wasn't Chicago.
Detroit traded him to somebody at the deadline.
That was Hansel.
I want to say Minnesota again.
No.
Or something.
No?
Who did they trade him to?
Was it someone in the East?
He was a total non-factor.
Was it Florida?
Florida!
Hey!
That's right.
He did?
Detroit flips him to Florida at the deadline,
plays 20 games with Florida,
Scores two goals
Has eight assists
And they don't make
The playoffs do they?
The 16-17 season?
They might have
No I think they did
That was the
Pre-computer voice
That was the galant season
Okay
Actually
He doesn't have any
Playoff games that year
That doesn't mean
He didn't play very well
Or he might have got scratched
And then he went to Vancouver
So that offseason
Signed in Vancouver
He signs in Vancouver
Who traded him
Who trades him
This past year to
Buffalo or Detroit?
Who did he just
Who did you finish the year with?
No, it wasn't Detroit.
No?
Why do I feel like he's played for Minnesota four times?
No, he's only played there that one stint.
Nashville?
Who did Thomas Maddox finish the season with?
This is bananas.
It's nobody on that list.
It's a new team.
And they went to the playoffs, and he scored a goal and had one assist.
They had a six-game series against...
Columbus?
Hey!
You're right.
Because we were like, how is Tortorella going to have Vannick?
He doesn't play defense.
And he just signed, re-signed, I guess.
Or no, it wouldn't be re-signed.
Yeah, so he signed with Detroit.
So that timeline plays from the 05-06 season to 13-14 with Buffalo.
Then he goes New York, Montreal, Minnesota, Detroit, Florida, Vancouver, Columbus.
Now Detroit.
That's Tomic's fan.
And that was the guy the Sabres dug in for.
Remember that?
Yep
We talk about like Sundin being good as ancient
Remember the powerhouse Buffalo Sabres?
Oh yeah
Of like 06, 07
They were good
They were really good
Chris Drury signs a monster deal with the Rangers
So the Sabres lose him
This is before the Pagoulas came on board
So the Sabres didn't really have the money to challenge these teams
And then yeah, their team
Danny Breer
Danny Breer, yeah
Signs his who was a monster
Montreal
went to Montreal
no
Philly
Philly
right
and was good for them as well
and then
the Oilers come along
that's the 05-06
Buffalo Super
05
oh my god
Tim Connolly
in 77 games
Maxim Afinaganov
had 73 points
yeah
how many of you
are like
who
Chris Drury
67 points
in 81 games
this is back when
people scored
Alex Kotelik
had 62 points
In 82 games
I remember not liking that guy
For no other reason
Other than he played
For the stupid Sabres
Basically everyone
Had a career year
Was this the
Buffalo Slug jersey too?
No
This was
No this was the
Red and black Sabres
Oh which is cool
That was a cool jersey
Daniel Breer
This is when the Sabres
Beat the Leafs
Literally every single time
They played them
I hated them
Oh it was terrible
Danny Breer had 58 points
In 48 games
Ryan Miller was the goalie
Yes
And you couldn't
You couldn't beat
The friggin guy
He was so good
Ryan Miller had such a stretch
and by such a stretch
I mean he was actually
a really good goalie
he's just at the end
of his career now
man
he's still decent
I'm trying to find
a bad player
Tim Connolly
55 points in 63 games
Vanek 48 points
in 81 games
but he had 25 goals
Derek Roy
who was
it was like a depth
center on that team
was so good
48 points in 81 games
or sorry
46 points in 70 games
I was looking at the guy
above him
Brian Campbell
oh what a hit
by Campbell
when he friggin
ended R.J. Umberg
44 points
as a defenseman
in 79 games
RJ Umberger
Blue Jackets legend
RJ Umberger
Blue Jackets legend
and then there's
a bunch of guys
who were like
I only remember
as being good
on the Sabres
but they were good
for the Sabres
who were they
Jokin Hecht
oh yeah
remember him
42 points
he got traded to Chicago
or something
and he was terrible
wasn't he
like he got traded
oh I don't even remember
but he never looked right
not on the Sabres
by the way everyone
welcome to the August
8th edition
of a hockey podcast
I don't give a hecht
about him
oh heavens Adam
J.P. Dumont
40 points in 54 games
20 of those points
were goals
how far down
the depth chart
have we gotten
we're still hitting
20 goal scores
Teppo Newman
the population
of Plymouthville
is on that team
they had a lot of injuries
to deal with
30 points
but that was only
in 57 games
Teppo Newman is a legend
by the way
that's an underrated
defenseman
underrated defenseman
that guy did some
big things
with terrible teams
pre getting traded
for a first round pick
Paul Gostad
oh my god
Mike Greer was on
this team. Henrik Talinder,
Dimitri Kalinin, Tony Lidman,
Jay McKee, Taylor Pyatt,
Rory Fitzpatrick!
Almost all-star.
Former Leaf
Adam Mayer. I'm not going to go through the
whole damn team. I pretty much
did. Though I almost did.
And you know what's amazing? Ryan Miller, 9-14.
Like as far as
Ryan Miller's seasons go. But that's 0-5-0-6, 9-14.
Wait, oh, is this the
0-5-0-6 team? Yeah, yeah. So you looked at the wrong
team. Oh, it's next year.
the next year they were even better sorry my bad guys holy shit danny briere 95 points in 81 games
wow vanik by the way everyone who's like how come vanik keeps getting signed vanik 43 goals 41
assists 84 uh points in 82 games chris drury 69 points palminville 68 derrick roy 63 brought back
the whole band
yeah
oh yeah
like everyone
again having the career
of their lives
it's interesting
when the crash
started a season
of their lives
one of the
I think one of the
one of the companies
that went under
in the crash in 08
was the company
that owned the Sabres
if I'm not mistaken
so that's part of the reason
why when those guys
all left
it was like 08-09
Miller was a 914
what the hell
anyway
I might be mistaken
I don't think so though
monsters
like they were all
either prime
or young
like I'm just looking
at all their top scores
it's actually
pretty shocking
that any of those guys
are even still playing
like Vanek is still playing
the fact that Vanek
can still get
something for him
at the deadline
like Columbus is
picking him up
for a run
oh yeah
he's made some money
that guy
holy
anyway
Chris Drury
left the team
boatload of money
Sabres are like
damn we lost him
Breer leaves the team
boatload of money
Sabres are like
damn we lost him
Oilers come in
and they try to get Vanek
and at the amount of money
they were signing him for
it would have been like
four first round picks
something gross like that right but the sabers to save face were like no we're not losing a third
guy they held on to him and he was never if i'm not mistaken let me go look at his numbers never
able to really repeat it yep 43 goals then down to 36 40 again he was still pretty good for a while
but he goes from 84 points to 64 64 53 he had a 73 resurgence 61 that's not bad 41 he was still
consistent. He was consistent
but they offered him
it was something like
seven
I want to say it was over seven million which at the
time was a stupid amount
of your cap.
Thomas Vanik, man. What a trip down memory
lane. The red and black sabers.
Has anyone in the NHL's history ever been luckier
with money than Thomas Vanik?
He's still making three million dollars a year.
Him and Carmelo Anthony
should get together and just laugh at people.
He is the NHL's Carmelo for sure.
hasn't been effective
for several seasons
but still gets a lot of money
and people still care about him
has Carmelo Anthony
ever had a season
as good as
FanX 43 goal season
he was pretty damn good
with the Nuggets
yeah yeah
when he was a star
in Denver
it's just
it's just like
him and Dwight Howard
like just for the longest time
everyone was like
here it comes
here it comes
and it never came
just you wait
it's gonna be the year
yeah
nope
you know whose year it is
who
John Gibson
Oh, yeah?
Wow.
John Gibson.
That's a contract.
For the next eight years after this coming season
will make $6.4 million.
His extension, it's the Carey Price treatment,
does not kick in until the end of the coming season.
Oh, no.
I didn't know that.
Yeah.
When I saw that.
Oh, no.
I think it's an overlooked detail.
Because he will make, this year, $2.3 million,
and he'll be a steal at that.
His numbers are great.
Well.
they're good
yes
they're pretty good
there's a giant if
what's the giant if
he has played
60 plus games
two seasons in a row
well
yeah
but
as
friend of the show
Jen Neal pointed out
noted Ducks fan
dude
he's made of like
toothpicks
and like a bunch of
lint
from your dryer
like this guy
he's
been injured man
he has
you better be damn sure
he doesn't get injured.
He has Buffalo Sabre
great Ryan Miller
backing him up
who's also
still making money.
Oh my god.
38 year old
Ryan Miller.
He deserves to be.
For sure.
For sure.
This deal
along with the
Carey Price deal
which we've seen
has all
the potential
in the world
to go so wrong.
So wrong.
Dude.
It's not the amount
of money.
It's the term.
You know what
would have been
a great contract
uh sans injuries and a lot of people won't admit this because they just don't want to give up on
the joke but let's let's face it if he stays anyway yada yada yada rick di pietro go look at
some of the numbers rick di pietro put up he wasn't that bad no if he wasn't hurt and then he
just kept getting hurt in that contract that 15 year like god no wonder we have lockouts
15 year contract
hey what's the worst that could happen
well what happens
he got hurt
if Gibson plays like he did last year
that's absolutely a steal
that's a complete steal
well I mean 2.3 million dollars is a steal
6.4 I would argue is fair market value
fair market value
is a steal
you know what I mean
his save percentage last year was quite high
and it's funny I was looking at
because I've been filling in for Elliot Price on the fan morning show.
Oh, yeah, we haven't talked about that.
And I was talking about how I felt like the Gibson deal
should make Leaf fans feel pretty good about the Freddie deal.
And the Freddie deal is good for a couple reasons.
First off, Freddie's numbers are always worse than they should be
because he starts slow.
I mean, or maybe they are what they should be.
I'd say they are what they are.
But they are what they are.
They are what we thought they were.
Gibson is, by all accounts, and by all metrics, I think, has performed better.
He just has.
And what's interesting is the Ducks went from 21st in the NHL in shots against per game.
That's 16-17.
To last year, being 6th.
The Leafs, both years, finished 4th in shots against per game.
The highest.
Like, 4th highest.
So this is bad.
So the Ducks were a very good defensive team.
And all of a sudden became a not very good defensive team.
And his save percentage obviously went up.
Under Carlisle?
Never.
Yeah, I know.
9.26 save percentage.
That's great.
But what happens?
What happens?
And I think what they did here was they tried to keep the number down
because they've got some big fat contracts, including that Corey Perry anchor.
Unless he comes back.
They had to keep that number down.
But to do that, you've got to sign a longer deal.
do you think
they look at it
as okay
8 years from now
we can figure out
a way to get out
of this contract
I think 4 years from now
they probably can
if they retain
if he's taking a step back
then he's a good
backup somewhere
he's only 25
let's say he can be
in his prime
for 6 years
even 5 years
you get 5 years
out of an 8 year deal
that's not bad
5 is
I'd argue
even that's optimistic
and by 25
he's only 30
you expect him to fall
on the map by 30
But Gibson's not 30.
He's 25 now.
No, he's 25.
So if you get five years out of him, he's still only 30.
They're arguing, though, that the argument now is that...
Yeah, but what if he's 30 and busted?
Yeah, the argument now is that...
Well, and that's really, as my therapist would call it,
that's an anxious thought.
Yeah, I don't think...
You don't know.
Yeah, and your expectation isn't for an athlete to break down at 30.
I think that's ridiculous.
It is.
The expectation is also right now, from the numbers that we're seeing,
goalies do peak in their early to mid-20s.
Like, we do know by 24, 25, 26 what you are.
Gibson's pretty good what you are.
And I don't hate the contract.
I just think it's the one thing that always kills you.
It's never the dollar amount.
It's always, always, always that term.
Dave Bolin doesn't seem that bad if Dave Bolin signs a $5 million per year.
Even if Dave Bolin signs a two-year contract.
Three-year.
Three-year like a hot butt.
Five years of Dave Bolin at $5.25 million.
That's a little much.
That's a lot
That's a lot
I'm trying to find
We are where it all started
Dave Clarkson
I'm trying to find
All the Gibson injuries
I thought hockey reference had it
Let me see
It
Look
He's a great goalie
That's a lot of term
And a lot of money
I'm fine with the money
Like Adam
Yeah
I think 6 point
What is it 6.4
I think it's pretty solid
6.4 is good
for a great starting goalie
who's putting up
a 9-26
on
he played 60 games
last year
okay
okay
I don't know
I'm skeptical
I'm skeptical
but what else is new
you were skeptical
of Freddie too
I was
and
I had every right to be
and I have every right
to be with this
because
we've already seen
this not work
well at least
it's not going well
for the whole price deal.
Everyone expects him to bounce back,
and I think Price has earned that for sure.
But with the Leafs,
they had acquired 1A goalies from California teams
as RFAs.
Freddie was the third time they had done that.
And the previous two were Toskala and Bernier.
So forgive me
for being a little bit concerned about Freddie Anderson.
And to say that we can be sold on Freddie Anderson yet,
I think there were
I'm sold
I think there were
stretches last year
where he was a
Vesna candidate goalie
but I also
and stretches where
he was pretty
bad
pretty bad
so if he can iron that out
just be a little more
consistent
I think Freddie Anderson
is a steal
I think he's a steal
anyway
getting off of
John Gibson
for a little bit
and with the whole
Freddie sucking
at the beginning
of the season thing
I have this theory
that I don't know
if we've talked about
on the show
that the Leafs
are going to start bad
We talked about that personally
But we have not talked about that on the show
And I also agree
You were with me before we even talked about it
I think they're going to start bad
And people are going to panic
And I'm going to tell myself that I'm not going to panic
But I'm going to end up panicking
But it's going to end up alright
Listen, first of all
The given is
Freddie stinks every October
Hopefully he doesn't
The year they made the playoffs, he won two games in October
The first year
they were horrendous
he was their worst player
like he was so bad
and Mike Babcock
had to get up and go
no Freddie's our guy
yeah and he's our guy
and you know
Babcock has
really thrown a few
Hail Marys
in his short time
as Leafs coach
that was one of them
that was one of them
and he's done alright
with most of them
believe it or not
but
yeah Freddie's bad
in October
typically
we don't know
if that's going to happen
there's been such
a personnel
turnover
that chemistry
might be an issue
The penalty kill personnel is totally different.
The power play personnel is totally different.
Their formations may be going to have to change.
There's a lot of change with the Leafs.
Remember how last year during preseason,
and I don't expect you to remember this,
because especially if you're not a Leafs fan,
you for sure won't remember this,
but a lot of the players, a lot of the stars,
didn't play very much.
They played a lot of the Marlies guys
because they didn't want to work these guys out too hard
because it was like, okay, let's save him for the season.
We know who's on this team.
They played a few games at Ricoh where you're like,
Patrick Marleau should not be here.
Yeah, yeah, like why is he playing?
This year I think is going to be very different.
I think they're going to have to really iron those things out in preseason
to avoid exactly what we're talking about.
Literally, like the first, I don't know,
they usually play I think nine preseason games,
which is far too much.
That's stupid.
But let's say the first four games should be entirely Marlies and Growlers,
have one, like, mixed game
and then have your final three or four games
just be your NHL lineup.
You know, and let the backup goalie situation
is going to have to figure itself out in preseason, maybe.
You don't need to play Freddie in those games.
You know where he's at.
Right.
But for, like, I'm very interested
to see how the power play and penalty kill rolls in preseason,
which isn't the greatest indicator of things,
but if it's super dominant or completely hopeless...
There might be some indicators.
Might be some indicators.
There's a reason they play the games.
I mean, it could be even better.
They'll have an actual center taking face-offs on the penalty kill.
That sounds interesting.
That sounds like a neat idea to try.
But, like, JBR won't be there on the power play.
Do you think Tavares is going to play penalty kill?
I don't know.
Per Lindholm?
Maybe if he makes the team?
like remember when
Miro Alton
fourth line center
like I know Babcock
has already said
Lindholm's gonna be there
but like
we don't know
we don't know how he's
gonna be in North American ice
remember Petri Conciola
yeah
no you probably don't
oh apparently you do
that's why I would
PTO Nick Shore
in a hurry
I actually think
Nick Shore is the guy
that I'm surprised
Nick Shore
huh
25
25 yeah
and they have Josh Joris
but I
I think Nick Shore
I know everybody
in the analytics community
really loves him
I tend to agree
I think he's a pretty good player
There's a Tyler Ennis
Yeah but he doesn't play center very well
For some reason he got labeled with the center
But he's never really played center effectively
He was really a winger
So I think
Yeah you do have Tyler Ennis
I think they try JT
I think they try him at PK
And you tell him don't you dare
Don't you dare block a shot
Don't you dare block a shot before game one
You're benched
If you block a shot
which being a superstar player
you go out and block a shot for a shift
and now you don't have to play the rest of the preseason
congrats
but no I think the Leafs are going to stumble out of the gate
they'll recover in November
and I don't know
where they'll end the season
but they're going to stumble out of the gate
do you have any of the same
line combinations as last season
well not to start
because we know that's the plan
so far
well see at the end of last season
at the end of the playoffs
because Kadri decided
to be a knucklehead
they had I want to say
a fourth line of
Janssen
Kadri
Kapanen
which I think they might
actually try as their
third unit
okay
other than that
no they're not going to
start that way
okay
so I could definitely see
I mean I think certain
pairings will stay together
like I see
Nylander Matthews
probably sticking together
although I would
really love to see
oh yes
I would love to see
Marner Matthews
but it looks like
Marner's going to play
with Tavares
yeah
And, yeah, I mean, I think that it's a full blender.
With Hyman, Taveras, Marner.
Babcock has already said that he pictures the top six being Marleau, Matthews, Nylander, Hyman, Taveras, Marner.
I wonder throughout the season, too, if Andreas Janssen, I feel like, is a guy that eventually can and should take over for Patrick Marleau on that wing with Matthews.
And that's not to denigrate Patrick Marleau,
but I really feel like Andreas Janssen's going to have to earn it
because that's what Mike Babcock does.
Fine.
He's going to make his money on special teams.
He might be a guy where you don't put him on the first line,
you don't wear him out in the same way that you sort of did with Zach Hyman.
Hyman had to play on the—well, had to play, like he was forced.
He played on the first line, and then you made him play all these PK minutes.
He basically played every single penalty.
And he would often, I think more often than not actually,
play more time than Matthews.
Janssen is a good 5-on-5 player.
He's a good penalty killer.
But I think where he's really going to make his money is on the power play.
I noticed something when I went back and watched Janssen's highlights,
and I didn't want to say it because it sounded silly.
And then I see Gus Katsaros, friend of the show,
and noted hockey mind
go,
I wonder if Janssen
helps fill the JVR void
on the power play.
Because he's not the same size,
but he's a goal suck.
He's a front of the net
banging kind of guy.
He's going to make his money
on the power play,
so don't completely
wear him out.
You know what I mean?
Are we hoping
no matter how this
upcoming season ends
that Patrick Marleau
develops a skin disease
at the end of it.
Wow!
And that he ends up
on an island.
So we have more money
come next offseason.
He scored 27 goals last year.
But how much do we expect
that to continue?
That's what everyone says
every year about Patrick Marleau.
To Adam's point about
Janssen replacing him
on the line.
Do we hope that that's
what happens at the start
He's heading into a contract year again
The exact reason that Steve said
Andreas Janssen will make his money on the special teams
I think that's where Patrick Marleau makes his money
Andreas Janssen's like what?
22?
3
He's got energy
Patrick Marleau's 38,000 years old
He was born in the Cretaceous period
But he's a freak
Some people are just freaks
But why test the freak?
You know what I'm saying?
Why?
Like he was so good for the Leafs last year
He really was
Why not dial back his minutes
Five on five and let him rack up those goals
On the power play
Put him with Kadri
He did play well with Kadri
And that's a good point
I like that point
And the great thing is
So you got these Franken lines that Babcock made up
And then last year
You have all these lines you can go back to
That did so well
Hyman Matthews Nylander was obviously great
Marlo Cadry
Marner
Mark Hadmar
Mark Hadmar
and then who does that leave
Tavares with
well I don't think
you don't really want to get Tavares
I don't think Mark Hadmar
ever exists ever
no
no
you're right
you're probably right
unless there's like injuries
although Tavares with
Kapanen
and
and Janssen
would be kind of cool too
I'm very excited
if that's the third line
with Cadry
and Janssen
and Kapanen
I think that's a phenomenal
phenomenal
third line
they have lots of options
I don't even remember
with the original
conversation
is Patrick Marleau
on the team
to start the
2019 season
no
I don't think
that was ever
the plan either
yeah
I'm kind of
with you there
I don't think
that was ever
I think his
contract ends up
in Arizona
I think they
gave him that
year so that
he could
because he makes
doesn't he make
a pretty significant
chunk of that
on July 1st
yeah
so he gets
his signing bonus
money and then
he retires
he's paid very
little of his
money
I don't know
exactly how
that'll work
well you trade
him to Arizona
for a player
that makes
the same amount
of money that Arizona
will have to pay.
He's still such a good player.
That's so ridiculous
that you have a team
in the league
where you can dump caps.
Totally.
Cap hits.
Game genie.
Don't worry.
Game genie league.
They'll try to ruin that
in the lockout,
the next lockout.
I think it is possible
that he's on the team.
He's got to score
at that same rate
or higher.
He's got to get
the 25 goals.
I think he's got to get
another 20 assists.
What did he have,
18 last year?
This season.
This season,
this coming season.
Yeah.
And he's going to also want to, right?
He may just be tired after that.
His numbers, I think, kind of sucked because that...
Okay, before the Mark Hadmar line, which was disgusting,
it was the Marlo Kadri Komarov line, which just stunk.
It was not a good line.
So I'm weary of Marlo and like,
oh, we're going to have him on a shutdown line.
No, you're the Leafs.
You have three lines just full of murderers,
and you have a fourth line that you use for funsies.
that's your thing
that's your identity
you're
oh we
send this line out
no no no
you're the team
that other teams
try to shut down
yeah
you're no longer
the team that
that goes and shuts
the lines down
yeah no
you're the maniacs
the way you shut
another team's line down
is you keep the puck
yeah
you're the axe
wielding maniacs
the whole
the whole
third line
shut down
bullshit
no that's done
so if you have them
on just your third
offensive unit
and that's what we call it
yeah great
Last season, Patrick Marleau scored 27 goals and had 20 assists.
What did he have the season before?
27 goals and 19 assists.
His past three seasons, 48 points, 46, 47.
And this coming season...
He's got to do the same thing.
He's got to do the same thing.
If he's playing with Matthews, he will.
We have every reason to think he will.
On September 15th, he turns 39.
That's a good reason to feel like he won't.
And he was great in the playoffs.
Didn't he have two two-goal games?
Yep.
And one of them was game seven?
He was great.
He was great, man.
Man, I was a huge fan, and I think it was a great pickup.
Even if you get a good season and a half out of him, it was worth it.
I still think he's going to be great this year.
And I think the players that he's playing with will dictate that, right?
If he was on Detroit, I'd be like, well...
But with Toronto, it's like there's...
But with Toronto, it's more like he's got...
It doesn't matter what center he plays with.
He's playing with either...
Both the top two centers are number one guys,
and the other guys are number two.
I think Babcock is me with a menu at a restaurant I love.
You know?
I can't possibly make the wrong decision,
but it's going to take me forever anyway.
How will I make the rightest move?
Yes!
How will I make the...
What is the most delicious?
I'd take forever at a restaurant.
Yeah, anyway.
That's why I'm afraid to ask for my food.
I think that's it for us today.
We won't do the press conference.
Should we do the press conference?
You want a press conference?
There's no press conference.
Can you take me a second?
Press conference.
We'll take Jesse's check.
That ain't a press conference.
That ain't a press conference.
If you can Eric Stahl for a bit.
Maybe if you Mark Stahl or Jordan Stahl.
I'll Stahl.
I'm offended.
I found the thread.
There are too many Stahl brothers, I just decided.
There are.
I'm not going to ask that one.
Imagine how competitive that family is at mini-golf.
Like, think about that for a second, you know?
It always ends in a fight.
Yeah.
The Buffalo Sabres.
The Buffalo Sabres.
This is a very simple question.
It says, the Buffalo Sabres, colon, not total trash this season?
No, they're not.
No, I don't think they are.
Hey!
They had a great off-season.
Good job, guys.
Especially that Jeff Skinner deal.
They traded a third-round draft pick, who admittedly is a pretty good prospect,
and then a couple of like
what are they
the first and the second
or something
it was Cliff Poo
who's the third round pick
wasn't it Cliff Poo
no it was Cliff Poo
and three draft picks
a second, third, and sixth
so you drafted
so you traded
two thirds
a second
and a sixth
come on
and a couple of those picks
the third and the sixth
I believe
are in 2020
they're two years away
oh
now
so that player is two years away
from being four years away
a lot of people dumped on that
and no that's not great
return for Jeff Skinner
However, did Jeff Skinner not deny trades to other teams?
Because I believe that was the case.
He had to waive his no-trade clause to go to Buffalo.
Which, by the way, he waived his no-trade clause to go to Buffalo.
They probably said Jack Eichelman.
And he's probably like, okay.
If you're a forward, why not go to Buffalo?
Why wouldn't you go to Buffalo?
Doesn't make any sense not to.
Yeah.
If you're a defender, you're like, oh, I got to do this all myself.
I wonder if he's on the last year of his deal, too.
But, I mean, wouldn't you want to be paired with Rasmus Dahlien?
That could be fun.
Yeah.
Sabres are going to be fun next year.
I don't know if they're going to make the playoffs,
but they're going to be fun.
They're not going to be total trash.
I have a question.
Okay, Skidder's 26.
He makes 5-7-2-5, and he's on the last year of his deal,
and they're going to put him with Jack Eichel.
That's why he accepted that trade.
That's a team that, like, the locker room is completely different,
which I think is exactly what they needed.
Yeah.
Question for Adam Wild.
Uh-oh.
It's from Kinebox.
Says Adam.
And here's a mean question.
What did you think of the Jack's Pancake Factory?
Oh, in Barry?
In Barry.
Oh, my God.
Did somebody see me there?
What did you get?
And what brought you to Barry?
Somebody spotted you in Barry.
Wow, that's wild.
It is.
I went and visited my dad and stepmom with my wife.
Aw, you say wife now.
Yeah, I do.
I've got this ring, you see.
and I
we're moving this week
so I was
going to go to Collingwood to see them where they live
but I said
can you meet us halfway and that's what brought us there
it was my dad that found the place
and we very much enjoyed it
I got eggs and I got a blueberry pancake too
because I was like I haven't had a pancake in months
I want to try a pancake
I assume this place is like a famous place
no it's brand new
brand new strip mall and berry berries growing so fast
It looks completely different
from even when I worked there
But yeah,
so that's why I was there.
Nice.
I'm surprised you didn't say hi.
You should have said hi.
Yeah.
I didn't mean to stop
the whole show for that.
That's okay.
No, that's okay.
No, you can't talk about that?
Not yet.
No?
Okay.
Next week.
Oh, not yet.
Next week.
Next week.
Okay, fair enough.
Someone wants to wish Charlie
a happy birthday.
Happy birthday, Chuckles.
Thank you.
He's eight years old,
which means he's 50-something.
Yeah.
And is very much getting into the get-off-my-lawn years.
He's healthy, though.
We've been feeding him real good food.
He had a bald patch on his ass.
He had this gross skin.
I don't know how well he was taken care of,
but anyway, his hair's grown and thicker.
I'm pumped that you told me that.
He's in his best shape of his career.
I needed to know that.
Bald patch on his ass.
Could he play for the Chinese Olympic team with Wayne Gretzky?
No, he couldn't.
Yeah, it could be his winger.
Is this a question?
Depends.
Is he a right-handed shot or a left?
Is this a question, Jesse, that you're laughing at?
No, you.
Oh, you were like delayed on that.
Yeah, I was reading and then I was like, oh, you just said that.
You see?
Final question.
Do butterflies get humans in their stomach?
That's a pretty good one.
Junkie Chow, what's up?
August 8th, everyone.
August 8th.
