um first off drew's learning how to operate the cameras so we didn't yeah he missed he missed the
name come on yeah you know even more reason to hate him do you want to chime in on your mistakes
uh they were purposeful oh yeah i meant to um i i uh as of this recording the robert thomas deal
hasn't been consummated so we're going to talk about what happened overnight um and then the
the gms have to bang no no no well yeah it sounded like you're their baby yeah agreeing to
completing consummating means more than just you know oh what's it mainly known for well in your
i i've known consummated deal many many times as part of the sales team in sdpn here i consummate
many deals i think the key i think steve's consummated the most deals so far at least
provable wow um wow uh now i i want to so we're going to talk about robert thomas in just a second
but i did want to mention uh we did a great episode with um alan walsh on agent provocateur
and one of the things that i mentioned right off the top of the show and this is from the trade
board and i mentioned it last show for sdp is the fact that when cj wrote his trade board for
the athletic there was a blurb at the top that says um at least over the weekend things were a
bit quiet the chatter was down the rumblings the machinations oh mac i freaking love a machination
yeah do you now do you have a hard c or an uh i'm a soft c hard see i'm machinations but maybe i'm
is it machinations machinations it's like macedonian or macedonian it it rolls so much
nicer okay well machinations i want to um i want to give alan a big shout out because he kind of
goes into the reasons why that might be the case and um it's kind of funny because when you when
you ask him like hey why did this happen like the double retention thing you're right there's got to
be 75 days between a double retended uh retained trade um and we're going to come to that when it
comes to like sergey brovsky how much that would have helped maybe a move like that happen it was
just gary felt like it like it wasn't like there wasn't like oh well here's the deal here's the
reason the reason makes sense because it was just like no gary just didn't like it and he felt teams
were pushing a loophole now playoff salary cap is another thing that comes up as well and that's
been holding up some deals but i think straight up gentlemen that's just fucking laziness on the
nhl gms part if you can't put if you can't figure out a playoff salary cap which by the way i've
always been against um but if you can't figure out a playoff salary cap and you're not going to
make any trades because of it you shouldn't be general manager they you know what one of the
things we talked about very early days with the show is uh they don't know the rules like very
literally yeah they don't know them they don't even know each other that too they don't speak
um but if they were to speak it wouldn't matter because they don't know the rules
so the calgary flames supposedly uh wasn't it they actually offered uh an offer sheet to ryan
o'reilly when he was with the avalanche the avalanche matched it had they not matched it
o'reilly for whatever reason would have been placed on waivers and colorado could have claimed
a back could have claimed a bet or anyone anyone and the reason that was the case is because
calgary signed him to a multi-million dollar offer sheet not knowing the bloody rules they made uh
like how many digit decision like an eight digit decision not knowing the rules great your theory
is that the gms don't know what they're doing yeah some of them don't some of them do look around
man i don't have any doubt how many good jams are there like i don't know i don't i don't know how
many i listen i know that breeze one knows the rules i know one i know dubas knows the rules
that's true that's a guy who always goes he knows the rules um i'm pretty sure that everybody in
vegas knows the rules i yeah that's three i think that's fair right that's three um
boston i think so they exploit loopholes um you don't think so i think that they do i think they're
good talent evaluators but i do wonder sometimes bill zito and his staff absolutely four you know
what i mean and you know what's crazy about all those teams they win a lot yep yep yep oh chris
mcfarland too i think i think colorado knows the rules and they know how to exploit the rules and
And so that brings us to Robert Thomas.
So Jarmo Kekalainen is a very aggressive buyer at this deadline.
And I think he should be, right?
This team deserves to be augmented.
Jesse, you kind of ran through last show how they've sort of been outperforming their own performance.
And I just can we touch on that quickly?
Because there are holes in Buffalo, but they're able to sort of outscore and outgoal 10.
Yeah, if you look at some of the possession metrics specifically, they are towards the bottom half of the league in the mid 20s in those metrics, but they have shown an ability to put the puck in the back of the net. And that's where things start and end with winning hockey games. So it's not necessarily that they're able to outscore their problems. It's just that a feature of their system is we can score at a high rate and it covers up any possession metrics you want them to be on the higher end of.
And if all of a sudden they were to play with more of the puck,
they could be a unit.
That's why there's so much promise in Buffalo.
If this is the stepping stone to the next decade or five years of Buffalo Sabres hockey,
where it's, hey, nobody expects us to do this right now.
What an amazing story.
We're going to make the playoffs, and we're playing a little bit above our heads.
If we balance out that part that's not really working, but we're winning despite it,
and then we get the whole thing working, look how good we could be next year.
No, I mean, not to make absolutely everything about the Leafs, but part of the reason I want them to sell so bad is the changing of the guard in the Atlantic.
That's going to stay that way for a little bit.
Montreal, Buffalo, you could probably throw Detroit in there.
And then there's just sort of Tampa, who's just never really bad.
Ottawa is certainly getting better, despite the, like, you might be in the basement for a little bit, dude.
Yeah, and I know this should be for the Leafs segment,
but a large reason you want to move off of Bradtree Living
is that the other GMs in the Atlantic division
are amongst the smartest in the league,
and the people you're listing there about who knows the rules.
Ken Hughes.
You go through the organizations that exist in the East,
but then specifically in the Atlantic,
and those are the collections of the best front offices in the league.
It's Montreal, it's Tampa, it's Florida,
it's boston now buffalo looks really good detroit's always been like oh we like what
they're kind of doing we're not sure but now i never liked what they were doing just for the
record adam never liked anything never let me forget it right um steve calls them red sabers
but cold past tense and now they're gonna play each other things are looking good now so you're
in a division with like five of the best front offices in the league and you look at your own
And all you hear out of anybody there is that it's in disarray and nobody knows what's going on.
It's the return to the notice era and added incentive.
If you're a team like the Sabres to load up, because it's sort of like the central division, like you don't want to make the playoffs just to get your ass kicked.
Right.
You want you want to show up and show out.
So they're going to load up.
And I think so.
So the start right now is Robert Thomas.
And, you know, it's interesting because it appears that I wondered if Bo Byron would be a part of this deal.
Some people suggested it might be Owen Power as a part of the centerpiece, because again, how many towering right shot defensemen do you need? Most teams need at least one more. There are not enough of them in the league, but one thing that St. Louis does have are towering right shot defensemen as well.
they're getting older um and and the Robert Thomas deal is interesting because they what
St. Louis apparently wants is pick that is basically a 15th overall or higher like a high
end draft pick a high pick as well like a first rounder and a current roster player who's also
pretty good oh that's a lot you know what St. Louis also has is an abundance of time to waste
okay can I ask you a question uh how has everyone thought uh the Braden Shen has looked on his new
team is he i don't know where's he uh wait he's on the on his new team the team he's been he's been
he stayed with the st louis blue he stayed with the st louis blue we went through this last year
we always forget the deals that didn't get made brayden shen what remember when the leafs were
gonna get him for like a few days we were all like whoa and it was gonna be cowan danford and
it was like a lot right so this is what the blues do or at least have done the last couple years
uh they don't need to trade shen he's got term they don't need to trade robert thomas
they don't need to trade jordan kairu they don't need to trade uh uh friggin colton pareko they
don't need to trade anybody they could still just keep being bad they could they don't need to trade
binnington either i want to know how many guys you're gonna name no but i'm naming all the guys
that i've heard in rumors over the last few days and they're all guys with term and like it's good
that the blues are in this position where they could take it or leave it yeah they do stink
which i think that they're not see this is where they lose leverage because they stink
they lose leverage because they stink they have leverage because well we don't actually have to
do anything right now yeah um you could argue you do have to do something on account of you stink
but hey their leverage is they don't have to do anything and until they actually do something
oh they're close to flames territory well i don't think robert thomas is going anywhere i i don't
know jesse if if maybe if doug armstrong like for i i feel like listen if the if the rumors are to
be believed doug armstrong could be with the leafs by summer so uh this may not even affect him
anyway um also jim nills contracts up but i'd really like to see the leaf go after him apparently
that's the one i'd prefer but uh but he's gonna stay in dallas um with when it comes to st louis
i understand doug armstrong's ask in fact i think it makes sense sure and you know you're talking
about a 26 year old center who yes doug armstrong did not pick him for his own olympic team but
people are using that as a gotcha and i'm like listen did you see the centers they brought
team canada i know yeah i know i don't i don't know if you bring last year's robert thomas who
had over 80 points and this year he's having a down season last year's robert thomas had over
50 points only 50 points um i thought he had 80 no he's never had 80 what oh that's braden shen
damn it adam yeah i was like okay now i know you're like 81 and 86 the last two years by the
way the shen deal it's a good thing the leafs didn't make it because he does not have a lot
of points this year yeah um i want to go back to robert thomas for a second here's why this
this this makes sense because your your pick your prospect and your player if any one of them
gets to 80 of what robert thomas is and can be right then great good for you but robert thomas
is in the third year of a deal that pays him 8.125 million dollars if you get him as a i think
wherever he's going to go if it's a stanley cup contender or someone going to the playoffs he's
a second line center that's why buffalo makes so much sense because norris is out and his production
could stay where it is and he'd probably be worth it well he probably got that cap hit going up his
production's gonna go up wherever he goes probably especially with the sabers at very least next year
this guy i think is worth selling that for just like quit now is he on the level of quinn hughes
no that's kind of akin to the package that the vancouver canucks gave up to get quinn hughes
who is going to win the norris trophy this year for my money and i think robert thomas is a guy
that not only the thing with quinn hughes is his contract length is short he's not paid that much
but you're gonna have to extend him in a year right robert thomas you don't have to extend
him till he's like 31 32 um and eight million dollars for a second line center guys i hope you
understand what the prices this summer are going to be i was talking to producer drew and jesse
about this before the show we'll get to the leafs in a second you know scott lotten's going to make
like four and a half five million bucks a year yeah he already makes three now yeah so having
a second line center at eight million on a very good team is going to be incredible value and so
you're not just paying for the player you're paying for the very very good contract he will
be on for a very long time he's also 26 right so to that end why are the blues trading this that's
exactly what i want to get back to it's like nobody's explained to me why doug armstrong is
so adamant that robert thomas has to go it's not apples to apples but i almost look at this the way
i looked at the blackhawks trading to brink it and i'm like is to is to bring it five years older
than i thought he was and trading brandon hagel what how old is brandon hit why are they trading
all these guys in their early to mid 20s and look at them they're still bad how how many years in a
row are we going to have kairu and thomas in trade rumors which both have for the last forever
before we just go uh the the blues and those two players want to divorce i think that's what's
happening here uh patrick line a was a very long time yes it was and that's because the blues were
the blue jackets management were incompetent no dude i mean it seems everywhere line a goes
all right start the clock i was talking about the jets oh yeah i still remember the jets
conversation where it's like guys you're unhappy it's your friends who were on the the precipice
of a breakup and you're like just do it yeah yeah and then they but no they stayed together
for like another two years yeah and it's like folks that's enough see other people yeah yeah
Yeah. Right. No, that's pretty much everywhere.
Line is gone. But with the Blues, like, I don't know.
I think it's all I think it's Doug Armstrong, you know, spreading his tentacles throughout the NHL, trying to drum up some noise.
I don't I don't think it's that I think they are going to trade him.
And I think whether it's now or it's at the draft, I think Robert Thomas is getting traded.
I also think Jordan Cairo is getting traded.
They they're just they I don't think either are happy there and I don't think the organization is happy back.
but what i think the blues need to do and i think this would be the smart thing is grab
if you can grab five to six good assets for those players you know a couple of good players now a
couple of lottery tickets well that's a lot of that's a lot of darts yeah that's what i think
you got to do you've got you really got a gem in broberg which you stole holloway's worked out you
still have braden shen there i think you're stuck with braden shen now um oh if someone offers you
something anything i think you take it that's the point though i don't or is he not even able to i
think their chance was last year and here we are i don't know like the blues i i i'm fascinated to
see if they actually do anything because i every now and then i read a report and i'm like am i
being sold something you know what i mean oh the blues they could really disrupt this deadline and
i'm just looking at it and i'm like i don't understand how it's a dream to have guys in your
mid-20s locked up for eight million dollars until 2031 that is a dream way to run your franchise
because jordan kairu and robert thomas are gonna be good players in this league for that length of
their contract i don't understand trying to break up that part of the team the other parts yeah sure
like you want to get rid of uh everybody else lower in the lineup yeah but the top guys i
don't know why you start there with the rebuild like i'm looking at like buchnevich like what
kind of a season has he had has he been hurt i feel like i haven't heard his name like just
looking at the sheet i'm like oh yeah pavel buchnevich and he's 30 like that's the kind of
guy you should be looking to move i i just can't help but wonder if the blues are a lot of smoke
and mirrors because i don't understand a lot of it is it possible guys that that if doug armstrong
does go this summer and again we don't know that um that steen coming in because he's the the
anointed successor has a different view of this i just have a hard time believing that you would
think so why i i the thing i have though is like if there was a completely new general manager
i can understand them going yeah let's hold and let's see what the new gm says but steen has been
there this whole time he's been there like five years would that not just be a continuation of
philosophy didn't he play with some of these guys yeah like yeah that is uh you would you would
think you would think even though they work together and steen is his protege um you know
that they think alike but i'm sure they disagree on a lot of things how could they not right they're
people um but we know that we know the sabers and blues got close overnight we know they got close
yeah but i also part of the another part of the reason why i just don't think it's going to happen
is the sabers are unique like the contenders in the nhl over the past two three years have all
been the same teams pretty much and they have emptied the clip the oilers have very little left
the panthers are well they're not even gonna make it but they got nothing the leafs thought they
were contenders they have nothing but they're not they're not gonna make it either colorado's got
like what in in the cupboard right it's not a ton and after after the brock nelson calum richie
trade which i would do again 10 times right like vegas is they're always they're very creative
which is good but like i don't think they have a ton uh buffalo new kid on the block hey we're
doing great and also like rochester's loaded like they're in a good spot one great thing buffalo
could do is just keep them all just keep them all it's like sounds like doug armstrong is trying to
take advantage of a situation where it's hey i have this asset and if i'm able to get everything
i ever want and turn around my franchise for robert thomas and take advantage of buffalo
who has all of those assets right then i'll make the deal it's like a situation where you're like
oh uh i would mcdavid you can't trade mcdavid right yeah unless he offered you austin uh willie
every draft pick ever and then you get everything yeah you can have quinn right and every you can
have quinn hughes matt boldy like uh carol capriza it's like oh i would never trade whatever but
unless you got the sun and the moon so i know doug armstrong's a smart gm i think that's why
toronto wants him and whatever if you debate his past moves but he seems to be good at conversations
with other gms is what he at least calls them he calls them he's always in on things and if he's
offering up robert thomas he's gonna do it if we look back on the deal and be like yeah that was a
fleecing for one guy and he got half of buffalo's assets right i don't know i mean to be honest
they always say sometimes the deal the best deals are the ones you don't make I think he lost out
when he didn't trade Shen to Toronto if if he had done that last year he'd have probably one of
Cowan or or Minton or both and that first round pick that was supposed to go maybe a second as
well I mean he should have done it take the Leafs out of it like last year was the year to trade him
now we didn't know that at the time no but I thought that's the I thought that was a decent
team so if you're gonna so if i'm gonna have a criticism it's exactly the same as yours which is
he gets involved and then does nothing i don't like that you gotta be be actionable here do
something he's brad true living with a little bit of zhuzh right like true living's involved
in everything but no he isn't the leaves kick tires no like yeah they kick tires on robert
thomas he's he's involved like how i shop from the sidewalk through the window you know what i mean
whereas doug armstrong will walk in and be like start picking stuff up how much is this
the salesperson's gonna get this from my client and then he walks out oh i'll be back later oh
i left my wallet in the car and he just drives off like it's at some point like i don't i don't
want to yuck everyone's yum here like this is very exciting and if this all happens i'll be all over
it and screaming about it on camera and please god do this on deadline day please god do this
on deadline day um but he's cried wolf too many times buffalo st louis dialogue has not stopped
like they're not telling each other to f off because the player on screen and the player that
you can't see if you're listening is colton parejo olympian uh silver medal winner with team canada
uh why would you do that silver medal winner february 22nd 2026 go back and watch steve
name. Adam hates this country.
No, I love my country. I'm proud
of our silver medal, okay? As Frankie Carado
said, it can't be a rivalry if only
one side always wins. Now,
Colton Pareko could
be on his way to the Buffalo Sabres as of
this morning. Last night it was Robert Thomas.
This morning it's Colton Pareko. Clearly
there's interest between these two teams
about getting a deal done. I'm wondering
about, and this is a very
this would be a very Yarmulke Kalainen type of
player. Big, heavy,
right shot, defensive specialist,
Jesse, when we talk about the advanced numbers you were bringing up on Monday's show, how does this help the Sabres?
I think it stabilizes the back end because Colton Pareko underratedly is a shot blocking machine.
Right. So you're looking at Buffalo and you're just getting stronger on the defensive side of the hockey because they know how to play offensively.
And it's like, OK, we can shore up the back end with a veteran D who's a puck mover, too.
Like they don't really need help moving the puck.
They have enough of those guys, but he's going to help with that as well.
a he's got a bomb like he can shoot really okay but then then here's my question with the sabers
so who moves out because you already have and if i'm just looking at their their defense you've
got a lot of puck movement back there i'm sure st louis wants to get younger on that end to me
the thing that makes the most sense and this is the part that we've not been sort of told this
morning is what might be going back the other way you've got doline who's not going anywhere
power is not going anywhere they're two left shot guys bo byram shoots left uh he could potentially
go but you know they they don't really have i mean michael kesselring has been in and out of
the lineup this season well so that's that was the name i was going to bring up so you you deal
kesselring so i does that salary cap make sense uh he makes one one point four no no like he's
he's part of it okay right he's obviously not the principal piece of that deal but you know that's
that's been a disappointment so it was it was him and josh stone and he was supposed to be a key
part of that deal he had seven goals 20 something assists last year he's been injured he's played
less than 30 games he has one assist that's it that's all he's managed to put up like that is a
sharp fall thank god josh dome was in that deal a yeah or that'd be a save kevin that saved the
yeah but like if if you're the blues and you can sign him to an extension that's cheap like that
that could really be found money there um I'm just spitballing I'm looking at I still think
the principal pieces are in the AHL because Darlene uh obviously shoots left plays right
power shoots left plays right could you move power over and have um Pareko with him because
Samuelson and Darlene I think have been fine right when it comes to the playoffs yeah like I wouldn't
move off one of the you know big three i guess in terms of the left-handers doline power and byram
um if you don't have to uh i'm sure everyone's gonna ask but if you have so if you have a top
four of samuelson doline power pareko and byram stays because i'm assuming if you're saying
kesselring steve if that's the deal like i would i mean obviously if it's your doug armstrong you're
asking for the sun and the moon you're not gonna get owen power i don't think you might get i
didn't understand that rumor at all I didn't get that either I don't understand that they've got
a young defense where Kesselring's only 26 Byram's 24 Powers 23 Darlene's 25 can you like if if it's
Kesselring then I guess you're moving Power over and Pareko into that second line right shot D
spot if it's Byram I I'm trying to figure that out yeah I don't know like is Bo because Bo's
asked for a trade out of there maybe he wants to stay now like I'm trying to trying to figure out
who goes and who stays and how i mean yeah they sucked right like they were awful they were the
buffalo sabers and now they're the buffalo sabers that's that's way different right right you know
we've always said you know this team ought to be good right or this franchise ought to be good
that's that's the way we grew up they were always competitive super passionate fans you want to play
in front of those people okay but what if you suck what if you suck for a decade and a half
like and i don't like there's no there's no pockets you can even look back at and go yeah
but we didn't suck for yes you did you sucked the whole time i'd ask out of there too and now
you're gonna trade me as soon as they're getting good i changed my mind i'm a changed man that's
how i'd be i would have no problem just swapping pareko and byram and doing whatever you can there
like you're not gonna miss anything offensively that byron brings pareko can bring that as well
um he's like one of the top scorers on the blues and it's a little wonky because they're so bad
yeah but perico puts up enough points uh defensively he's gonna be better in a shutdown
role in the top four of your d and then you get a right-handed shot in the top four of your
of your defense they do need a right which they don't have which is crazy for a team that's so
good so you need that and you get to move power over to the left side which is natural stick side
So it just makes a lot of sense.
And like I said, you're not missing Bo Byram and the contract, too.
If you're moving out the 6.25 of Byram, then you're bringing in the 6.5 of Pareko.
And what?
You got to take on 250 grand?
And if the rumors are to be believed, too, Justin Falk could be on his way out of St.
Louis.
And so then you're getting instantly a lot younger.
And I don't know what Falk's going to bring.
But if you're looking at their defense now, well, now you've got Philip Broberg.
Let's say it's Bo Byram.
bo byram or michael kesselring uh you'll also have you know cam fowler logan mayu's on his way up uh
they think anyway i mean like there's and cam yeah i mentioned cam krug's out forever he's never
coming back so it's sort of i don't know it seems to be a rejigging of things but i think
does jesse when you look at just play style and let's say michael kesselring is the michael
kesselring who played in utah last year not the one that's been hampered by injuries in buffalo
this year who fits the blues roster better would you would you say byram or would you say
kessel ring plus for a pareko like or plus plus if like if you're you're taking on byram like
you're doing a solid to buffalo so you'd want more from that right jesse's way closer to right
than i am like oh in terms of the deal yeah i think i think byram's that's where you're starting
with i was trying to preserve byram i think you you'd make that swap if you're buffalo and like
on the doug armstrong side of things you want by room and something else like i don't think
like doing that favor to buffalo and yarmulke line and is enough in that deal like i would
want more than that yeah and they're gonna need power play guys right i mean he's got 31 points
this year yeah and if i'm in a good year i'm not scared of paying that price like this is this is
the time to go for because you haven't had a chance to go for it in 14 years who cares if
you gotta sweeten it a little to move out by room plus whatever draft picks you want to give up or
other prospect like i know they don't have too much picks for as bad as they've been they haven't
stockpiled draft picks the best because uh kevin adams is was terrible at his job and is still
awful at everything so they don't have like oh three second round picks and they can throw out
a couple to get what they need so we'll see what kind of assets they attach to it but it's the time
to go make a move no they got something even better than than picks they got bloody uh prospects
so like sorry my bad i thought it would i thought it would be faster i thought it would be faster
i'm trying to look up shaking his head over there i'm trying to look up the guys they have they
they got friggin no uh ratamurka has a lot of value consta hellenius has a lot of value yeah
um uh who was one of the guys i mentioned the other day isaac rosen izak rosen um they have
a ton of guys okay and if you're the blues that's what you're collecting and you get younger with
byram whose term as well like you sign through next season um so you're you're getting younger
there he's not going to be the talent that pareko is being a righty and and all that but you don't
need that right now because you're going to be bad for a little bit here one of the names brought
up to me that i thought was very funny as part of the return to saint louis was colton ellis
who's a goalie they lost on waivers to buffalo and they didn't want to do that but you still
have the problem of you have you'll have three goalies if you get him back so if buffalo were
to acquire a goalie um in a trade that would get my ears up right it'd be like oh man is
bennington really actually at the door st louis acquires a goal yes oh he's a buffalo oh my bad
yeah yeah sorry if st louis were to acquire a third goalie that's what it would be it would
be a third goalie the buffalo side of it i'd be scared if i'm buffalo to mess up their goalie
situation because it seems like it's finally working this season don't touch it after so
many years of it being the one of the shakier parts of their team so i would be a little afraid
to move any of those guys out,
whether it's UPL or Lyon or Ellis.
And let's be honest,
this is their house money year.
Yeah, exactly.
They've surprised a lot of people.
This has been coming for a long time.
We always said,
hey, they should be better than they are.
I just left them on the scrappy.
I'm like, I guess it's just never going to happen.
But they've now emerged.
If after the playoffs,
oh man, we went to the first round
and we lost in six
because our goaltending landed us down.
That is a draft free agency,
July, June, July, a problem
that you could solve.
and Sabres fans are going to love you anyway.
But I think Steve's right in that eventually,
you're going to have to do something with their goalies
because they have four solid goalies
that are going to be signed for next season.
And goalies are something everybody needs.
And if you have Lyon and Ellis and Levi in the minors
and then UPL, you're going to be able to get some assets for that.
So that feels like a draft trade to me.
I wonder.
Where we can upgrade our team seriously here at the draft
by sending out one of these goalies.
what on earth is the trade value of devin levi we were talking about to rebuild it yeah we were
talking about him like he was a bona fide starter and dominic hasik coming you know he looked good
coming out of college he looked really good and it hasn't gone well there what happens well what
happened i don't i don't have a good read you know with goaltending season to season that shit
switches so you have never any idea all right let's move on to ontario toyota dealers now i
want to tell you about the tacoma and then i'm going to ask steve and jesse to name a team right
now who best fits the tacoma okay so everyone loves a power play and when it comes to power
and capability nothing delivers quite like a toyota tacoma the truck is built for those who
demand more so not leafs i think uh under the hood a standard i-force engine delivers incredible
performance uh towing capacity up to 6400 pounds um it's not just about raw power though there's
also the panoramic multi-terrain view monitor that gives you live underfloor views helps you
navigate especially when you got to park right okay it also helps you elevate your game on and
off the road uh there's it's packed full of features for your adventure great stereo system
so let's just be honest that's the best part right and it's got the power lift gate you know
where you press the button and your and your trunk thing goes down and it goes back up you've showed
me yeah it's pretty cool all right jesse steve name an nhl team that best fits the ontario toyota
dealers toyota tacoma well when you said power play i was thinking reliability and i immediately
thought of the tampa bay lightning and the other day when i saw braden point score that patented
dink-dank-doink um tic-tac-toe is that how they yes yeah it's tic-tac-toe but i believe we've
evolved past that on the dink-dank-doink um that little tic-tac-toe play where he scores right in
front of the net that was the first thing i thought of so the lightning lightning okay that's a good
pick jesse blake i think it's the dallas stars why i think there it's not just because you're
wearing green is it it's not no i think when you go there and you look under the hood you say
this is one of the most solid things we got going you know on on you look at it from the outside
and you're like okay that looks great it's fabulous and then you look more and you look
deeper and you're like oh they got so much depth in the forward group they got so much depth on
their d and then they got a great goalie in that and you're not missing any of the pieces on paper
for sure so i think the dallas stars are the tacoma would you call them the nhl's most perfect
team jesse yes okay i'm trying to think like i just love that with it because drew's like five
feet from you so i'm ahead of them if you're taking but there's more flaws on the abs than
the stars oh oh he's gonna shut the cameras yeah yes you're not getting favorable camera
where where where do the dallas stars fall behind the ass
after he's coming in on the back end it's clearly it's just the abs defense is way deeper than i
think the abs have better guys at the very top and kale mccarr and his little boy who follows
him around all the time but look at one to six give me the stars all day what about malinsky
though he's emerged and he's been awesome one is that not the little boy bischel's the most
useless defenseman in the nhl okay wow the whole nhl uh the entire nhl oh yeah oh totally we know
what drew would pick but it's your ontario your title's been taken away uh this spring this summer
check out the toyota tacoma you guys know i love pickups visit shop toyota.ca or go to your local
central toyota dealer during red tag days from march through may you got some months to check
it out so during you know the lead up to the playoffs and all the way through most of the

curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think
you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about
my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they
never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do
that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff
because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the
right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's

rabbit app you should download that task rabbit.ca code dangle now going back to um some of the deals
that are sort of already taking place and again i'm i'm furiously monitoring twitter hoping that
no buffalo sabers st louis blue deals gets done because that hilarious segment that we just did
there's only five games tonight oh 10 teams gonna be a lot of itchy fingers right you would you would
think if there was going to be a big flood before the deadline it would be today but who knows now
there was a deal yesterday a couple of them uh we're going to talk about the cool smith deal in
a second but michael mccarron is on his way to the minnesota wild he's actually probably already
there right now no um stop how long was your video about michael mccarron for a second round pick yes
i think it was drew is it 17 minutes 17 minutes now i'll tell you what you're a madman well so
everybody looked at that deal and they said this deal sucks why the hell would you do that
and i think they're also pointing at hey garen as much as he in the video i call him big balls bill
because i think he is he went out and he made some ballsy moves he thought his name was michael
mcgaran and that's why he paid a second boo no that was bad yeah there was also a hospital
michael garen and anyway whatever um let's get it was worse why did i have to say that anyway
i so bill garen at last year's trade deadline everybody forgets this but he went out and he
He spent a second round pick on Gus Nyquist.
Who did what for them in the playoffs?
Nine.
Six games, zero goals, zero assists, zero points.
That's a whole lot of nothing.
How many goals does he have this year?
I don't know, seven.
Zero goals this year.
Oh, oh.
Zero goals.
What?
Gus Nyquist has not scored a goal in the NHL this season.
He has fewer goals than Kelly Yarncrow.
That's fact.
You don't even have to check it.
No, you can absorb it, though.
I mean, he's got nine assists, 39 games, Winnipeg Jets.
Brother.
Pretty rough.
So you're going, oh, Bill Guerin's spending a second on this guy.
Now, here's the thing.
Are you going to try and defend Guerin here?
I actually, in the video, spent 17 minutes going, but here's how it could work.
Because here's what I think's going on.
Here's what I think's going on.
You know, if it was good, it'd probably just be good.
Yeah.
Okay.
It probably wouldn't take 17 minutes of justification if it was just a good trick.
You know what?
Maybe you guys are just haters, though.
Have you considered that?
Oh, yes.
Have you considered that you're haters?
Oh, yeah.
All right, let me pull this at you, okay?
All right, all right.
So we got Big Balls Bill dropping the Minnesota Wild Vancouver Canucks trade.
Zeev Booyam, Marco Rossi, Liam Ogren, right?
Big Balls.
Yeah, that's a Big Balls move.
Then, and I mentioned this in the video, December 31st, he drops Team USA roster,
and Lane Hudson, Cole Caulfield left off, all of Montreal throws a riot,
but we already kind of knew they weren't going to be there.
The big one, which I called, was Jason Robertson not being on that roster.
Balls.
who he sees all the time in the Central Division, right?
And you're going, shit.
And I remember when I was streaming those Team USA games.
I said balls.
When I was streaming those games,
Team USA fans were really down on that team.
You can go back and look at the comments from our streams
from those first two Olympic games.
They're like, this team sucks.
I can't believe Garen did us like this.
They win the gold medal.
Who can question it, right?
So now he drops a second round pick on Michael McCarron
and going, why the hell are you doing this?
So obviously we know Minnesota needs centers.
But here's the thing.
He is, Michael McCarron,
fourth in defensive zone face-offs won this year.
Wow, that's a lot.
Fourth.
He also kills penalty.
He's eighth in shorthanded time on ice this year.
Despite the Preds being up and down,
they have the 13th best penalty kill in the league.
Cole Smith, another one of their penalty killers,
just got traded last night too.
Upper middle of the pack.
That's not bad.
for a team that's pretty pretty mad i mean lower middle of i mean there's like a sleepwalk to the
wild card in the western conference right now it's like the kings the preds it's like i don't know if
i want it i suck you suck who's gonna take it who knows backing in um seventh in block shots in the
nhl there's a big need for it on the preds he's six foot six 232 pounds i you know i the biggest
thing with michael mccarron to me is he's hated he's hated if like it's i i'm amazed that i have
thoughts on michael mccarron like he's pinged around the league for for so long he was a
suitcase for a while but if you watch any game he's involved in oh they hate his guts like really
underrated him and keifer shorewood were total bastards against the canucks a couple years ago
yeah like really underrated as a rat like can you can you call a guy that big a rat
sure you can you can do rat stuff he's a they just hate him for whatever reason they hate his
friggin guts and he also does some useful things he also shoots right and nico stern shoots left
right-handed centers are the new right-handed d if like everyone wants them but if they're
going to be splitting defensive zone face-offs in the playoffs and we have seen good team after
good team after good team sunk by bad face-offs in the playoffs we all know we've seen it if you're
gonna have him on the fourth line with nico stern when it's on the left side nico's at 54 when it's
on the right side stern's at like 55 56 there you go that's that makes a ton of sense and then
on top of that because you're off as like a 22 year old kid and shouldn't be playing center he's
38 in the dot so move him to the wing but um he is like think about who they're playing okay for
if the playoffs started today they're playing dallas okay dallas who fought and clawed the
colorado avalanches eyeballs out both teams just beat the shit out of each other last year okay so
let's say that's the opening round matchup how are you going to beat dallas you've got high-end
talent we know that but you're going to have to be they're going to have to hate playing you
and if you add mccarran to the mix and you've got trennan who's a bulldozer right you've got
sturm who's he's sturm um you've got uh uh eric sinek who's a bastard you've got hartman who's a
complete psychopath they're a real real hateable team you're gonna hate these guys if you're if
you're the opponent they're a real hateable team and i think that's the reason and the reason that
they had to pay a second rounder for it guys is because the stakes are literally that high
and barry trotz might have made a good trade and and and so like so what what i think garen is doing
here is going i don't care i'm giving them every opportunity to do this and i'm willing to pay for
it and it kind of raises the stakes for the colorado avalanche i don't know what dallas
wants to do with the deadline they're a little confusing but colorado center they want a center
who i i said in the video the team that benefits the most from this trade of the calgary flames
oh because if colorado's got a match that if that's what the price is in the central division
if i'm craig conroy i'm going oh you want nasm cadre do you right oh okay well i just saw the
mccarran fetched a second so we're not retaining anything and we're not taking any bad money back
what do you got i think that trade made every trade conversation for the next uh 560 hours i
think it is drew um it's made every trade conversation until the trade deadline a lot
more colorful hey well this trade was a second yeah i don't give a shit what that trade was
that was stupid i'm not doing it but the rest of the nhl doesn't matter here it's the three teams
in the central because if you get through that one of those three teams will i think you're very
likely looking at a stanley cup favorite i don't think anybody can disagree with that 100 there's
not a single division where they wouldn't be
like the Wild are fifth in the
NHL right now. They're third in their division.
Right. That's
holy shit.
Well, they'd be leading
there to other divisions outright.
One of the divisions, the Pacific, they'd be leading by
10 points. When you look at the only
other division they wouldn't be leading
is the freaking Metro and they'd be
two points out of beating the Carolina Hurricanes
and I think they would have more points in the Metro
because they're not playing Dallas
and Colorado, right? They're not playing those
monsters as often it's funny like i look at that forward group and i'm just like
it leaves something to be desired like yeah they're all bastards but like where's the
offense coming from oh back there right like uh it's they're building a team for long nights
yeah you got to contend with you're just going to get the shit beat out of you by those forwards
you're just gonna get this shit beat out of you they have enough high-end talent up there
that they're still going to be annoying to deal with
in terms of finesse.
Quinn Hughes is one of the most active skating D
I've ever seen.
Brock Faber is extremely gifted
and he's like the second option.
And if you contend with all that
and you get through all that,
now you got to beat one of the best tandems in the league.
Long night.
And Eric Sinek,
like imagine Minnesota's in a position
jesse and steve where eric sinek is the second line center well he is right now but but eric
sinek second line hartman's third right you need to get either a number one or a number two so if
eric sinek is on is number one then or hartman's number one i don't think hartman should be staying
there at number one but you've got it like if it's a vinnie trocheck well that's your second
line center if it's somebody more i mean could they go after cadre i don't think they've got
anything left in the cover to go after cadre but you know what i'm saying you're gonna have to find
it uh you're off i think would be part of it you're gonna have to find it because there are
a few teams like we spent a long time talking about the blues we spent a long time talking
about the sabers those are both teams that could be extremely active but also don't need to be
these guys need to be yeah 100 you went out and got quinn hughes uh you're sort of all in
there bud and you spend a second round pick on michael mccarron that is all in behavior yeah so
if there's a big move to be made the Minnesota Wild are going to make it they're they're not
done there's no way I guess my theory is that maybe outside of this division Michael McCarron
doesn't get a second rounder but I think in it with those top three teams you can start charging
it's it's valid it's definitely valid man um I also so that brings me to and this is my question
for the two of you guys Minnesota's got a they got they've got to add at center up top in the
top six i don't think i think hartman in the third line center spot makes sense steve maybe
you're right maybe you're off as a part of that package let's think beyond the vinny trocek stuff
if you can't get vinny trocek done do you go higher than vinny vinny trocek and go after
cadre or do you go lower and maybe a guy like nick waugh that's fascinating i think all three
of them match their mo was a bastard yeah i really like him and he's definitely the cheapest option
of the three cadre i think is going to cost you an arm and a leg trocheck is obviously going to
cost you an arm arm and a leg if you want to go bargain bin uh shopping you go out and you get
wa who's a pretty versatile player tough as nails but i think they added that i like okay you you
spent a second rounder on michael mccarran's what are you going out and getting nick waugh for
third line yeah and then you know and then you're accepting hartman and eric's neck in the top six
i'd rather i mean if i'm a wild fan and if i'm a leaf fan i would like a second round pick please
sure but if i'm a wild fan uh no i'd rather you swing for the fences and go get one of the other
two jesse what do you see when you look at the minnesota wild roster i think you spent a lot
for your fourth line center i think everything you said is valid but that does not mean the price
that he paid was market value he overpaid for everything you're asking for and if i'm garen
i would have looked at an option like you guys want nick waugh i would have gone scott lawton
who makes 1.5 million who the least probably could have retained on that who probably would
not have cost you at this point if brad's scrambling more than a second round pick maybe
if it's a third depending on how desperate he gets towards uh the deadline time if the leafs
retain on lot and it's 750 000 it's an odd guy to push your chips all in on when i feel like you
didn't have to and if you'd waited it could have been a third could have been a fourth for your
for michael mccarran so it is better work out because it's a it's a very ballsy decisions if
you want to keep you big ball bill if you want to keep using that one it's it's a lot it's an
overpay and i don't think that just because that's the guy you need in that position doesn't mean
that you didn't pay way too much to put him in a place that's going to be good in your lineup since
this was a deal with the preds i am reminded of tanner juneau uh and the reason i bring that up
is tampa was like beyond reproach like every deal they made was the right thing to do they had won
back-to-back cups they'd been to three straight stanley cup or they were on their way to go into
three straight stanley cup finals or no they had just been to three straight stanley cup finals
sorry they're brilliant and then they spent five or six picks on tanner juneau oh which objectively
we're all like well that's stupid dot dot dot but it's the lightning do they see something we don't
right and then he was not a good member of the tampa bay lightning and they ended up trading
them and they didn't get five or six picks in return one miss though and all the lightning
trades i'm like ah total no i know but i bring it up because it was a it was a trade with the
predators and it was like you look at the minnesota wild and you're like wow they've
done pretty much exclusively good business and then this one overpay comes through the door and
it sort of gives you pause but just like with the team usa decisions if it works you look like a
genius if it doesn't people yeah i think bill garen i think here is backed himself into a little
bit of a corner where now because i think scott lawton would look so good on the wild and he fits
kind of everything they need and could have filled some holes that you already got mccarran to fill
like on the pk and taking defensive zone draws scott lawton's great at all that stuff and now
he's backed himself into a corner where it's going to maybe cost him the 27 first round pick or the
28 first round pick right uh to get him because he's already paid a second for the fourth line
center the well and one the one bummer i would say if they were to trade you're of here can you
can you bring it up is this the only all russian line in the entire nhl they gotta talk russian
while they're out there, right?
Trenin, Yurov, Tarasenko.
I don't know.
That's so interesting.
That's very 90s of them.
I'm fixated.
I don't, if, like, I'm not moving Yurov.
And I think you have enough draft capital
that you can leave your roster the same.
Plus, I don't think Minnesota should be in a position
to be moving off of their forward group.
They need to just add to what they have
to really make them have a chance
to go on a deep playoff run
and contend for the Stanley Cup.
So I'm using draft capital
and deeper prospects than you're off who's a part of their team right now to back what jesse said
um uh with backing himself into the corner because again with the video that i did on the sdpn
channel it was more to go okay i mean i think we all know it was an overpay but here's why
he might have right i don't think anybody's going to dispute that it's like jesus that's a lot
scott lawton if you're if you're looking to improve your power play the one thing scott
lotten doesn't have six foot six sorry yeah penalty kill the leafs the one good thing they
have going for them this year is their fourth and pk percentage the the the penalty kill on the
leafs it looks so good it's every night and it's never faltered for a game this season it's crazy
it looks fantastic and lotten is the reason him and steven lorenz are aces out there they're
awesome and in fact god i wish lorenz could shoot if you're a smart man i know he gets a breakaway
every oh my god shot off it's not even that he can't it's not even that he can't shoot it's that
he just doesn't ever get the shot i wish he was half a stride faster oh man lawton and lorenz
if i were a smart team and i needed pk help i'd get them both because i don't think it'll cost
you that much it's an interesting thought yeah and lawton again six he's not six foot six he is
definitely hateable in the playoffs for sure but he's six foot two or whatever it is or six foot
one and he's a vibes guy he's a great person love this guy wish he was staying but he's going to be
too expensive um i i think jesse whoever does acquire him is getting somebody that i maybe not
he doesn't have the size but i'd never say you can bully scott lot no like there's no way you're
just out there pushing him around i don't care if he's six foot six or not he's not a a guy you
just put it on his ass all the time hey scott do you want to fight yes and i didn't even tell you
I do. I don't care.
And if you're looking for the guy
who can inject himself into a locker room
and automatically become an ultimate vibes guy
for a playoff run, that's the dude.
Pro tip from someone who saw it.
Don't acquire Scott Lawton
and then put him on the wing.
Why did you do that?
Anyway, hated that.
Always hated that.
Still hate it.
One of these days we'll get a good coach again.
One of these days.
Hey, Steve, doesn't Jesse look handsome today?
i think he looks downright dapper that's all thanks to my fabletics sweater that i'm wearing
did you take the style quiz jesse and then help you i did yeah i did indeed take the style quiz
and then i signed up as a vip member and my clothes are high end but very cheap now if you're
listening to uh this episode you can't see what jesse's wearing jesse has hit his mid-30s and now
officially his quarter zip era and i like it it looks good on you thank you thank you yeah i like
the forest green color i think it suits my skin tone very well and because jesse was a vip he got
80 off that felt good too didn't it it did yeah so here's the thing they've got clothes for anything
you want workouts you got travel days you got work you got whatever fabletics has clothes for you
they're high quality they're gonna last and it's not just some online store right this is a this
is a company with over 100 retail stores and if you're a vip member you're gonna join over two
million people who already are. So it kind of feels like every time you're shopping, you get
a discount. Yes, Jesse. It's the perfect time to revamp your wardrobe. Spring is coming. That's
right. Go out and get a bunch of springtime gear and get it at 80% off because if you are a VIP
and you could sign up Fabletics.com slash SDP, you take this quick style quiz and you are going
to get 80% off. Now, remember, when you sign up, make sure that you select SDP when prompted to
unlock your 80 off that's fabletics.com sdp um so yeah anyway that's a that was an interesting
trade so i know you know what you should do is spend a fortune to get a guy and then not play
him at the position that made him cost a fortune it's a smart team good yeah exclusively good
decision um hey you know what i would do i would take um the best prospect in my system and not
have them play hockey for a month no that's good not even have them in a position because people
are like and i said this why couldn't the leafs send easton cowan down well they couldn't there
was like a funny rule about that about 16 or 17 games yeah he would have had to play less games
earlier in the season for the leafs and spend a less amount of time on the active roster oh good
but by the time they reached the olympic break all of that was out the window absolutely
brilliant i bet he played ahead of cali yarn croak though when they came back they're trying
to trade cali i think that's what's going on they're like he could still cali yarn croak
conditional seven has been in the nhl since before this podcast was the thing i think we
freaking know what he plays like oh my god i hate to see if we need that conditional seventh
where's our next ryan turver coming from okay turf berg don't you besmirch ryan to verberg
i've never been able to pronounce his name one of the worst things james myrtle was fantastic
on the leaf report to point this out because monday uh we're all in the building and that's
the game that they chose not to play yarn croak and that was the game where the most amount of
from around the league uh were at the game in the press box it's like okay so maybe the one
guy you're gonna move this is the time to scratch him so when you have all of these scouts dozens
of guys in toronto to see oh who can they acquire uh he's not on the ice i wouldn't trust the lease
with a tim's run they don't know what they're doing well so you know what let's just go to
the Leafs because they're naturally there. I was going to go to Cole Smith next.
Let's do the Leafs.
I look at this
roster and I go, man,
it's so funny listening
to people talk about the Toronto
Maple Leafs because the
prevailing thought, I think it was Dregs that said
you don't want to nuke the roster.
And I
understand that
point of view if you're
moving off Berube.
Yes, I get that.
but you could nuke parts of this roster and there are replaceable players like alan said on the on
the show yesterday on agent provocateur he's like listen you can't build through free agency and
we've known that for years but what you can do is find bottom six guys in free agency so the bottom
six guys that might be valuable i think lot and lorenz together as a package if i was the leafs
and i had a brain it's a really not sure they do i would flip those two guys and go listen this is
the fourth best penalty killing unit in the league you need these guys um and then you know does a
team need matthias michelli in the playoffs i don't think so like if anybody thinks they're
gonna get anything from matthias michelli like i know he's got some skill but i'm sorry undersized
ford who was scratched for a month pause pause for a second adam can you shut up i know can you
shut your mouth can we delete this part adam shut your mouth dakota joshua is going to be here
he's in your team
he's not good enough
to trade him
and he's not healthy
he hasn't played
well enough
you know
so
I have very different
opinions
I was like
I like him
and you're like
he's not good enough
he hasn't played well
this year
to warrant a trade
I think he's played well
he hasn't played enough
because he friggin
messed up his spleen
I thought he played
great heading into that
he had a rough
October
to January
yes
I say October
to December
okay
his start with the Leafs
was poor
what's the difference
a month
Happy to help.
He was good for three weeks when the Leafs were good for three weeks.
Yeah, there you go.
And then he got injured again, which was unfortunate.
Yeah, it's a shame.
It's not his own fault, but there's no market for Joshua.
That's all I was saying.
No.
No, I don't think so.
And I look at this and I go, okay, so Joshua's going to stay.
Michele's going to stay.
And Michele's going to be an RFA.
And he's a guy you flip in the offseason if you think you can.
He's an incomplete player, but he's got some skill and he's got some skating.
and I don't see anybody in the final like the only team where I'm like oh Michele might make
sense is Dubas because and I don't think he's going to be doing that Boston liked him do they
I just think Dubas likes players like Michele who are a little bit flawed but they can get some
speed and some pop in the lineup whatever sure send them there the way that Dan Muse runs that
team you need puck movers you need puck carriers send them there I don't think Dubas is going to
do that he's not going to help the Leafs but Wah makes a ton of sense Lott and Lorenz make a ton
of sense mcmahon we've talked about ad nauseum i do wonder about domey if the center market sort
of disappears are you able to trade on the fact that hey he had a really good playoffs as the
third line center for dallas a few years ago he was not bad with the least last year in the
playoffs he is a playoff guy yeah he is adam let's cut to the chase i wonder about anybody
yeah i wonder about bloody anybody like it's no longer about who would you trade it's are they
trading anyone you have you have four musts like i think we went through this last show you have
four musts they got to be on off the roster by 3 p.m friday mcmahon lawton stetcher yarn crow
ufas must what the fuck are you keeping them for yeah do your job get them off the team get
anything is better than nothing yes anything is better so those are four then you're already in
you might say you know you can't lose trades like that we're already past that you're we've waited
so long to do it i don't want this gm going forward do as good a job as you can with the
time you have left what did we get oh that's awful anyway take care and added to all this
chris tenev is done for the season they've announced that it's official he had his surgery
he's done good so that's good i did not hear that like 30 minutes ago oh damn all right that's
happening that's he's so now you've added season ending ir spots on your roster so now you have
even more cap space so i got the four guys i think you should send out now five six and seven
whatever you want to add any more trades get creative oh my god and do something with your
newfound cap space your team that's gonna suck and the guys who have value to playoff teams
like an oel like maybe a nick waugh no if you're if you're truly creative you're doing like domey
but i don't know if they're that creative so that's kind of where we're at right now with
the leaf sorry i didn't mean to stop you but there's some news that i don't want you to see
oh okay no because what i was gonna do is i was gonna i want the leafs to get their homework done
ahead of time they're refusing to do that but uh you know true living got most of his work done
last year if i'm not mistaken on the deadline carlo was a huge deal that was on the deadline
lotten was a huge deal that was on the deadline and i can't remember what else well yeah it was
uh carlo lotten yeah those were those were the deals there might have been another small one
or jesse you just made a a good point about what you're going to need to get and i didn't mean to
distract i apologize but i want to break this news to steve and i think it fits perfectly with
what the leaf should do okay okay dallas stars just made a trade dallas stars just made a trade
yeah okay i just before we skip it to that just the chris tanev news just because i mentioned it
let me just do the official announcement the leafs pr tweeted out maple leafs defenseman chris
tanev underwent successful core muscle surgery today in new york city he's expected to fully
participate in training in september can i say something he's done till september can i just say
something and this is not going to be a popular sentiment i love chris tana by the way the leafs
are dumb uh why what do you what about this show makes you think that's not going to be popular
it's so funny when we when i when i did the trade video or when i did the video with alan yesterday
we're talking about playoff salary cap and somebody's like hey adam you don't like the
playoff salary cap well your team was one of the teams pushing for it and i don't know that that's
true i've never heard that you're getting away from but i will say is i will say is do you think
i said have you ever listened to the sdp you think i think the leafs are smart
um but the the thing the thing you're about to nail is the date on this tweet the date it is
inexcusable that this was announced on march 4th chris tanev went down for an injury not the first
time the second time when was it december like he came back over christmas and then had to leave
the game because that's when the the comeback started remember they fired um savard tanev
came back either that game or the game after and i think it was that game and chris tanev has not
played a hockey game for the least since december 28th why yeah 60 plus fucking days later yeah are
we doing this what do you mean they thought they were gonna make it out no no yes and that's wrong
they thought they were gonna make it he's right they thought they were gonna use these right they
they are delusional you think you're gonna make it fine i can believe in december and i i could
say it in december like it still didn't feel real that they were not going to make the playoffs in
december because i really wholeheartedly believed that they would i thought they would but but okay
hey chris chris you got a core muscle injury if you come back what are the chances you're any good
a core muscle injury your rotation is fucked until you get surgery and you're 36 okay you're
not 26 you are 36 years old chris how about we do this let's just call it what it is we're gonna get
you your surgery now you're gonna have an amazing summer you got young kids you live in toronto it's
the best you're at home your family's there you're gonna train you're gonna be in great shape you're
gonna be all cleaned up and ready for september and we're gonna take that salary cap space the
ltir confirmed salary cap space so now the leafs have like 10 million at the deadline as of right
now we're going to have that earlier and that's going to give us flexibility to make the playoffs
the fuck is going on here they thought they were going to make it and they're not clever they're
just a really really really bad front office i have no time for anymore i'm ready to be done
and it seems like with this decision now they're scrambling yes and they finally understand that
they don't have a good roster which is the conclusion a lot of us understood come like
mid-november and now that it's a couple days before the trade deadline they're like okay
chris we got to make this decision here you're done so we can get this cap space when this
should have been made in january yep it's absurd they're late on everything well they have been
since long before brad got there they're late on everything if there is a difficult decision to make
you can trust that they will be there violently not making it
so i want to tell you about something i'm sick of it i want to tell you how stupid this this is
okay so that the chris tanaf decision we've already kind of we've told you right
have i ever have we ever mentioned the worst year of alexander ovechkin's career
mark hunter mark hunter sorry that would be dale hunter dale hunter the other hunter my bad worst
year of alexander ovechkin's career he was 25 wow he got he still got 38 goals uh crazy
he only had 65 points in 78 games go look at his playoffs um i will in a sec from that year
um 25 years old 65 points it's the one year that dale hunter coached in the nhl in his entire
career can't imagine why so I am looking at this and at several times this year Brad for living
has defended Craig Berube this is the 2011-2012 season by the way okay uh his playoffs he was five
goals uh nine points in 14 games that's for Ovechkin that's poo it's total poo and the next
season which was the lockout shortened 2012-2013 season he started a little slow he did he had 32
goals in 48 games it yes Ovechkin the back I don't even know if you could call it half like
two-thirds of that season was psychotic going into his season with Mark Hunter or Dale Hunter
excuse me Mark Hunter was to Toronto he had 52 goals in his rookie year 46 the next 65 the next
56 the next 50 the next sunk a little bit in 2010 2011 to um 32 goals and he had 38 the following
season but the the 32 goal season he's still at 85 points the the toronto maple leafs have
defended their head coach and i i'm just going to ask you who is the guy in the nhl who's scoring
still at the same rate or higher than alexander ovechkin at the same point in his career
oh the matthews what has happened since greg brube got here his offense has completely tanked
yeah or his goal scoring is completely tanked they have the wrong head coach
i'm not on board with a single thing they're doing
no like like top to bottom they're like there are times where it's like i don't like that
they're doing this i understand why they're doing this but uh but i do like this this and that i
i am not down with a single gosh darn thing the toronto maple leafs are doing i hate it i hate it
i hate it and as a fan i am completely miserable and my dms are full of other leaf fans who are
completely miserable we're all miserable because we hate what you're doing it's not even about the
wins and losses what you're doing is leading to all of the wins and losses specifically the losses
awful awful horrible shitty product that feels like it's only gonna get worse unless you do
something and they're so violently doing nothing the report then sorry go ahead jess i was gonna
just just uh let you know steve if you're curious the people who are below the decision makers
uh at the leafs and mlse are as concerned as you about the direction of the franchise and
they are waiting and seeing if this losing and the directionless of maple leaf sports and
entertainment continues for the next couple of years and it's not good vibes can i know so that's
a very interesting point jesse i want to i want to i want to um i want to put some mustard on top
of this sandwich all right um this the report earlier this week and i forget who have it so i
I apologize, whoever did have this report.
The report was from inside the organization
that the Leafs did not feel
that they've given Craig Berube
the tools to succeed this season.
Mother of Pearl.
By the way, Drew just laughed.
They feel like they haven't given him
the tools to succeed.
Who's dumber?
There's 32 teams.
Name a dumber one right now.
man not even the Preds because Trotz is leaving Trotz just fleeced someone last night yeah like
Tom Fitzgerald is oh is good contender damn good name there yeah on the hey you shouldn't be
working cool yeah why is Nemech's name out there we'll get to that good name what is going on if
you want to if you want to put a checklist together who shouldn't have a job he's up there yeah good
name took a while to get one name we have one name can we get two names I would say before this
season i would have had the calgary flame flames below but i wouldn't put them below now
at least the flames are trying to be bad and have accepted it even if they won't say it publicly
flyers flyers you don't like daniel briere right here your mic's on no the flyers are a shit show
they don't know what's going on they don't know if they're going to rebuild or going to contend
it's just they're in that purgatory like the leafs they are pick a direction there's four men
in this room with four differing
opinions. Can we hit
three names? Ken Holland.
Decent name. At least he got the
Panarin deal done. At least he did shit.
He got the Panarin deal done.
That's a great deal.
I don't know if I'm giving you.
I can't give that to you. He's also been in the
Stanley Cup finals. His boss. Okay, I agree
with that. Who's been there since 2017 and has
only been known to lose
as King's president.
I can't fight you on that. And the thing that
ken holland has that the least front office doesn't have is two straight stanley cup final
appearances right dude they they very aggressively suck they suck so much dude i'm not down with a
single thing all the like i get messages from lee fans all the time about everything every year
what do you think about this what do you think about that well here's what i would do here's
my trade proposal i would start this goalie in this game all the texts i've gotten for like two
months are just what the fuck what the fuck is going on okay and i gotta tell them nothing good
i got a text from my friend who is from ottawa lives here and so grew up a sense fan and got
tickets to monday night's game and i got to go and now jesse gets to go all the time but for me
a bit of a special occasion you kicked them in the balls after the first period he looked at me
and he's just a like a fan just a not a like you know he loves playing fantasy stuff like that he
knows his shit but he has no idea how bad it is he looked at me and he said that was the toughest
period of live hockey i've ever watched and that because both teams are off and it was an even game
it was it was so evenly shit though it it had the makings of what should have been an entertaining
game and it's it's funny i enjoyed it because i was holding it to the standard of the previous
three games and then i go online and it was universally everyone was like that was a hunk
of shit but you were like it was better than saturday it was like what a bar what a low bar
against the shit of your team ottawa's way better the only thing that's failed ottawa this year is
their goaltending yeah that's valid everything about the senators is good they just need a
goalie that's valid and that's been a problem for like five or six years that's a very flyers
problem believe it or not oh never having a goalie i'm wondering i'm wondering like so so
the berube thing was well here's the big move are you ready matthews kneelander
all together together on the same line and he's like they're gonna go out there
they need to control the pace right from the beginning and you know why it isn't because
they're not great players it's because no one knows what the fuck to do the system now it's
the system he's been trying to get them to play and then when they don't play his system he's like
ah they're not playing the right way and then we have another game and the same thing happens and
he says the same thing and then it's just been that for two years to leafs management unhand
my hockey team this situation must stop yeah the fans have had enough do you know how desperate
they are oh they're posting phil kessel stories on their instagram now i saw that which is listen
And I'm always down for a Phil Kessel story, but not right now.
It's not fucking right now, guys.
I feel bad for those segments because those are good.
Those are the kind of stories you love to hear when your team is winning or at very least fine.
They're not fine.
So everyone's just like, boo.
Brian Leslie's got a good job.
Yes, he is.
Oh, I'm not telling him to shut up.
It's fantastic.
if you're into like leafs extra stuff like the history of the team last 10 years and stuff
because they've been doing that era of least that we don't have like nostalgia for that
previously because it used to be oh dougie and wendell and everything but now we're getting
like christopher steig kessel's story you know what i'm like that's awesome unless you've been
doing a good job you know what i don't want to hear from christopher steig about phil kessel
because that era is this era we're entering that era again that's why i don't want to hear that
i'm fine with a phil kessel story and i don't have nostalgia for the phil kessel years i don't
i didn't love those teams i thought they were poorly constructed i liked certain players but
that doesn't mean there wasn't fun stuff i already feel like i did back that i don't want to feel
that way double adam it's worse when the leafs traded chris for steve do you remember what they
got they traded them to the flyers you remember what they had no idea what did the first and a
third hey that's sick oh holy shit i bet they blew that first though it's probably the freddy
first or something i think it was stewart percy um well they just that's not stewart the third
was josh levo oh that's good yeah the guy that they didn't play a guy that
um at least oh my god i'm not down with anything they're doing and they have so little time they'll
have less than 48 hours to do all their business to do all their business by the time this show
was because they sat on their hands from october until march 4th and they didn't jesse before the
olympic break they took that western road swing and said this is us yeah the three-game winning
streak and we knew did we not call it we knew before they played a game on that road trip
and it was brutal we said they're gonna win all three of these games and then there's vancouver
who suck so violently.
They were so bad, especially at the time.
And good for them.
Yeah, they have a really good shot
at beating Calgary, who also suck.
And then they're going to play Edmonton
second half of a back-to-back.
They're going to win that because it's funny.
And it's the kind of thing they would do.
And Edmonton has been prone to lose games.
You know, they haven't been world beaters
this regular season.
And they radiated with the vibes of that win
for three weeks, obviously,
because they were like we're good so this is the thing you could have if you're the leafs believed
that and still done your homework because you go hey what if we're not very good out of the break
which is entirely possible because we've been very inconsistent let's do our homework anyway
have some deals in the can anyway if you want to wait and see how the because remember i told you
this last week they rug pulled us they tried very very hard throughout the um uh throughout the
olympic tournament to a stay quiet but b get the message out we're gonna see how things go in that
first week and they blew every fucking game have not won since february 5th have not won
and now they're like well we always knew we were gonna sell if that's true how come nobody's
calling you that's the scary thing that we're hearing in circles is that their activity is
extremely low this can change but that's what we're hearing you guys back me up on that
one of the hardest things for us this time of year is staying on top of our meals because you know
you don't have much time to meal prep and then if you don't meal prep then you're ordering in
and there's trades and there's things happening all the time and we've had that dating back to
you know the winter games right like it's the the sodium contents in the takeout meals oh you know
when you get it delivered it's it's through the roof high in sodium so if you want to make your
long days easier and at least you won't have to think about the food and here's the best part you
won't have to cook it either it's ready in two minutes you should try tempo uh even busy athletes
like maria sharapova swear by tempo for balanced meals that help them stay on top of their wellness
goals there's one pova and maria tempova what jesse blake it took me a while to get that stop
Maria Shara Tempova.
There is 20 new recipes every single week.
And no, they have not used that as a marketing slogan.
Jesse just came up with that right now.
20 new recipes every week.
It keeps you excited about your food
and it keeps you on track with healthy habits.
For a limited time, Tempo is offering you
60% off with your first box.
Go to tempomeals.com slash SDP.
Again, that's 60% off.
Tempomeals.com slash SDP on your first box.
60% off. Tempomeals.com
slash SDP. Rules and restrictions
apply. And you also have
a Dallas Stars trade. Yeah, I do.
I kept waiting before we ran out of show. Here's what
the Leafs should do.
Dallas Stars acquire Tyler Myers.
Oh! Okay.
Now this is an interesting deal.
That is, Pierre Lebrun had it.
Tyler Myers to Dallas for a
second round pick in 27 and a fourth rounder
in 29. Plus, Vancouver's retaining
50% on the remainder of Myers'
contract, which makes him a
1.5 million dollar player this year and next a very very listen chaos giraffe has his moments
where you go there's a reason why he's chaos giraffe well yeah but when he was chaos giraffe
that no one liked he made over six mil i liked him in the playoffs for vancouver i thought he
was very good because he made three and now he makes one and a half and this is the one weak
spot of the dallas stars is their back end and now it looks a lot better does he supplant leon
bichelle i think was what we need to know uh liam liam excuse does he supplant the worst offense in
the nhl yes and he didn't want to go to detroit because you don't watch enough leaf games uh
because he didn't want to come this far east they had a good setup in vancouver he wanted to stay
but dallas is a good place to play hockey and you could win a cup and you're gonna have two
sweet runs out of it yeah it's important to know he controlled this situation yeah that's why
there's been so many rumors because it's up to him to go back and forth with his family and agent
and dictate where he wants to go.
I know it was getting out there yesterday
that it's a buyer's market.
That's a pretty good price for the seller.
Especially.
Oh, yeah.
Especially for a seller that had no control.
And why was Vancouver able to do this?
They worked the phones
and they got their homework done early, Steve.
They got their homework done early.
They've been selling all season long
because their team revealed to front office
who they are this season
and that is the worst team in the league.
So they sold
and they've been selling this whole year
now that they come down to deadline week they just have the extra pieces to get rid of so what
they get they got marco rossi liam ogren zeve booyam was it a first was the other part of the
deal i don't even remember i think yeah um two seconds for keifer sherwood and then a second and
a fourth for tyler myers fantastic work as from a dysfunctional franchise it's crazy like you listen
it is always best to not suck but if you suck this is what you ought to do this is
this is why i was like who's worse i would rather be in the canuck spot right now
yeah i don't know yeah there is the element of their 11.6 million dollar player objectively
sucks and hates it there um that's tough but beyond that dude and they might even do that
over the next couple days potentially the elias pedersen trade potentially that'd be a miracle
or at the draft or this summer and the reason they'd be able to do that alvin get a statue
outside of roger's place if he's able to trade pedersen might be the one to pay for it can i
ask you can i ask you something he might pay for it himself thank you for getting me i hate it i
don't know if you see my life his post games lately they've been terrible he went three straight games
without a fucking shot his during games have been pretty bad too there are still teams that want to
apparently acquire him my question to you guys is are the vancouver connects paying to get him out
the door or are they going to get assets for this guy that's what i'm saying like if they can get
something back for him that's incredible work or like take bad money or something it'd be it'd be
spectacular stuff if they're able to do that and it sounds like they're they're trying yeah you
know which they should be six yeah also on the market today yeah till 2032 11.6 million dollars
be careful buy or beware you know if you can get if you could convince somebody to be like no you
can rebuild him you can be the team to bring back the old pedersen and like over the next few days
uh two days can you get de brusque done can you get cane done de brusque already said publicly
my game does not suit a um a rebuild and then he walked it back yeah he did we know what you said
yeah we know what you said is the one you meant this is not the first time he has done this
statement about like i didn't mean that can i be honest can you get hoglander done can you get
garland done jake de brusque has always had this weird thing fall on him hey yeah right from the
draft what's he's always had a little bit of what's going on there yeah yeah Kane I think is
obviously going to get moved too and it's funny because it was Tyler Myers that said it was nice
to have another Canadian in the dressing room really like Evander Kane blah blah and Myers is
the guy that gets traded first um but yeah like DeBrusque seems like a foregone conclusion uh
Brock Besser's name again is out there and he just re-signed um I don't know I don't think that gets
done this week no garland is interesting too because the islanders are apparently trying to
get him when he's healthy he's great do you have any do you have any worries about him making six
million bucks until 2032 as long as he's healthy i think it's okay as long as he's healthy and i
think that'll be a fairly manageable cap hit as the cap goes up and like he's not ancient at the
end of the deal he's 29 it expires right when it ought to you know okay all right this episode is
sponsored by better help anxious time of year we talked about it last episode we'll talk about it
again maybe what do they say comparison is the thief of joy is that what they say maybe maybe
you've been comparing your team to some other teams and your team being yourself a little too
much maybe you've been comparing your shortcomings to their their strengths and you're going i feel
anxious and sad about it maybe they should arrest comparison it's time to do something about this
well in in real life in real life not hoggy life um you you might need to have somebody kind of
take a look at your world and go hey uh this probably isn't working for you and better helps
a great way to do that because you get matched with the credential therapist a pretty darn quick
and it's based on a quiz that you take and they're going to match you with somebody and then if that
doesn't work out you can get rematched with somebody else and they're very very good at
matching people over 30 000 therapists worldwide better help is the largest uh the world's largest
online therapy platform they've served over 6 million people globally and it works with an
average rating of 4.9 out of 5 for a live session based on 1.7 million client reviews now remember
your emotional well-being matters especially this time of year right steve oh yes right right
find support feel a little bit lighter okay sign up and get 10 off at betterhelp.com sdp again
that's better help h-e-l-p.com sdp um i want to quickly mention this this morning because i don't
know how much show we have left pierre lebrun tweeted this and i just cannot believe it and
we mentioned it earlier going to be interesting to see what happens on the simon nemich front i'm
like what yeah devils are taking calls on the second overall pick from 2022 nor shortage of
teams teams checking in yeah no shit new jersey are happy to keep them yeah no shit but if there's
a deal that upgrades their forwards in a real way they're going to listen so to me i'm wondering
luke hughes is out i'm not sure when he gets back um or was out and has had health problems
um uh but he's going to be there a long long time dougie hamilton was the guy they were trying to
move simon nemish i don't get it simon nemish the same simon nemish the guy who was awesome
during the olympics who's a fantastic mobile defenseman this might be if if the new jersey
devils don't step in here and take the phone out of tom fitzgerald's hand he might wreck the jack
hughes era yeah you can't let that man make this deal there's no there's no reason to make this
deal now and there's no reason for him to be the one to make the deal this team shouldn't be this
team shouldn't be half this bad no i don't get it like they're brutal but if you're an owner if i
own the new jersey devils i'd be like tom sell put the phone away sell hamilton put the phone away
you're not trading any of the core pieces go fuck yourself and your contract's up at the end here
you're gone like what jack it's crazy how the script has flipped in new jersey in like six
months last summer we're talking about well when are they gonna get quinn hughes now i'm wondering
ah what's minnesota gonna get jack yeah right like what are they because we do think they're
coming together at some point uh i'm a little concerned about what's happening here i'm and
look at who they got no disrespect to connor brown and but like who are we playing him with
boy yeah but i'm just looking at that roster i am i'm shocked like i'm really shocked how bad
they are it's a good roster i'm really the rust i mean it's it's at least at least middle of the
pack i don't think shelvin's a bad coach either i like shelvin keith i always thought he was a
good fit for the devils and like to devils fans credit i haven't seen like a ton of noise about
like get keith out of here um like look at that decor it's a decent decor if luke hughes is playing
well which i guess he's not boy no they spent all that money on pesci too yeah uh yeah yeah
they're they're in a rough way that's never just freaking league men dude i know sorry rookie
rookie yeah i'm i'm like begging the leafs to do something anything and i feel like i'm
pitching pitching them on you should make changes this should be like the biggest slam dunk in the
league shouldn't it what nemish no freaking firing fitzgerald oh yeah oh yeah he's getting
fired that should be that should be the easiest don't forget markstrom has two more years left
and alan has got five or four and and like life isn't fair for gms like i wouldn't be shocked at
all if a new guy came in and made them good fairly instantly uh but oh well too bad so sad
and it's funny that's what i would say uh that i'd say it'd be a big dub to fire oh hey you know
oh you know i like that you cued that up it was looking for the complete sad there you go there
you go gotta catch a ball um yeah no they they freaking stink they they freaking stink and
Fitzgerald should go I what a
what a mad hatter a couple of
other names that are out there
Jordan Bennington is out there
and it looks like the Blues are
trying to find him a spot where
he can go there are some teams
going to the playoffs that need
goaltending sure couple of names
that come to mind Montreal and
Vegas Vegas still have not beat
a team since November 20th I
believe it is that was in the
playoffs they lost to the
Sabres right could use a big
game goalie Montreal is an
interesting one because there's
also the the rumor about Bobrovsky being potentially available and that's fascinating
and Vegas wouldn't make sense for that because I think they're too far up against it you can't
double retain so even if you did retain it's five million bucks you'd have to trade significant
pieces off the roster Montreal doesn't really have that problem I don't think and and so imagine a
big veteran goalie like Bobrovsky in Montreal or I'm trying to figure out though who else is
looking for goaltending really Montreal stands out Vegas stands out who else going to the playoffs
going to the play and not not many not Buffalo like Buffalo if they decided okay instead of
having this platoon we move off of one of them and a significant roster piece in order to get
a solidified I mean they can't do it bona fide I don't think they have it does their asset like
What, has Florida taken Jari?
No, well, Edmonton already said they're not making any goalie moves.
Stan Bowman said that.
Sure thing, dude.
He could have got out of that friggin' Skinner deal at the end of this season
and then made a decision this summer.
But instead, he signed up for two more years of Jari,
whose recent history outside of this fall was bad.
There's a case to be made that's the worst trade in Edmonton or this history.
Yo, but straight up, it's not even the worst trade Stan Bowman's made in his career.
he's made i don't know i think this one might be i think this one might be number one worse
than panarin and sod the stakes of having mcdavid and dry sidle in their prime and then going out
and moving off of a goalie that was expiring this year to lock up tristan to bring in tristan jari
who's locked up for the next three years who is dog shit it's an egregious mistake and it might
cost you a stanley cup and it might be the worst decision uh stan bowman's made in his entire
career uh uh panarin has scored roughly 700 points since the hawks traded like so yes i agree with
you but when the hawks traded him they had tase and kane at the end of their prime still probably
in it can i throw a name and like with surely not attached to it carolina for like a goalie
yeah but you got bussy you do have bus and you freddie anderson who's always injured and bad
in the play and could check off how's he been i haven't even looked do you want to upgrade over
one of those i think you could now here's the fun one but it doesn't involve a team that's in a
playoff spot yet they just are sniffing around columbus where it all began that's an if you're
trying to move off uh or upgrade over jet greaves and mers lincoln's but that's boy that's so much
freaking money and for his name to just randomly emerge on a wednesday well he's a ufa too yeah
yeah but and it looks like they might miss florida they're below they're below the lease
in florida oh yeah they're missing i didn't realize they dropped below the leafs yeah i
know they've been bad i think the last couple nights that kind of confirmed it even the players
were like yeah three losses in a row two and eight in their last 10 florida's done um what a run for
them yeah it's a good three-year streak and they'll be right back they have played four years
of hockey in three years yeah it's bound to happen yep they'll be fine yeah they'll be back in the
playoffs next year they'll be totally um you could throw out depending on how you feel about the
kraken goaltending or the mammoth goaltending there's two teams fighting for a wildcard spot
in the west i think they're both in right now yeah they're both those are the two wildcard teams in
the west if you want to upgrade over in goaltending there with a guy a couple stanley cups like what
playoff team can you just plop a 10 million dollar goaltender but let me well five million
still he's 37 though and this year last year his save percentage was 906 the year before 915 the
year before their first run to the finals remember he struggled a bit was 901 and then was monster
in the playoffs um he is an 873 this year do you care not really no okay it's Bobrovsky he's a
hall of famer yeah of course and last two years in the playoffs he's been fantastic outside of
the first start of the playoffs uh the first round of the playoffs when you didn't start
so so Biddington is six million Bobrovsky retained would be five who would you rather
because Biddington is a younger goalie hasn't played in the playoffs in a while but has played
some high leverage games in the four nations and olympics uh bobrovsky has a couple of cups bob
bob bob jesse same yeah i don't care for the six million dollars next season to pay bennington
like oh yeah unless you're paying to retain i'd rather do if i'm a team right now going for it
i'd rather do just bob uh for this playoff run and then figure everything out in the offseason
i've seen bob steal too many games too recently yeah not pick up interestingly the florida panthers
signed noted Alan Walsh client
Louis the King Domingue today
two-way contract he's currently with the
Charlotte Checkers and he started the year in
Russia I just think
it's interesting they added a goaltender to their scenario
do you think it's funny how I just kind of
think it's funny we must go so this isn't
out of date all right all right bye
no no that's not how it works at all
