This is Steve Dangle podcast, powered by Sports Interaction, Canada's sports book.
Back at it.
Woo!
S-D-P-P.
The Steve Dangle podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
We're back!
Yeah!
Hooray!
It's been great.
It's been great.
It's been great.
Good long kind of summer break
Which I think was definitely needed
I did it properly
What'd you do?
Like I didn't obsess over hockey the whole time
Did you not?
No
That's great
See I actually wasn't on Twitter very much
So did you
You did it properly too
So did this guy
I think we all did it properly
I think we all did
Well I'm highlighting that
Because I never do
Do you feel like he's lying to us Jesse?
I feel like this is going somewhere
I saw you make a video about Rasmus Sandin
Yeah that was like a couple days ago
That's fine
Okay, that was in the middle of August.
But you actually didn't obsess about hockey?
No.
No, I don't suck.
Did he?
I don't know, you tell me.
You watched his Twitter, I don't know.
I was fine.
A lot of people were like, oh, this Sandin saga, and I'm like, ah, you know, you might
side, you might not.
I feel like there's a little bit of stress in your voice.
No.
You can't be worried about it.
No, I'm not.
Did you obsess about hockey?
I don't know.
How many Auston Matthews goal comps did you watch on vacation?
Only a couple.
i wish i could tell you none but only a couple okay and then someone today was like uh i i think
uh i i think they're actually waiting for the birth of a child so they're like oh i have some
time to kill in the hospital today what are some leaf games that that i should re-watch like
highlights from leaf games and i was like oh well there's this one there's also this one and this
one and this one and this one and then i just went down the rabbit hole and i was i basically
listed every game for the last five years it was great i'm glad did you actually take a break no i
don't you did you take a break i took a break i took a break all right now before we get into
anything it's just it's just come down um that uh network stalwart and uh host of the cj show
he's a goalie um julian mckenzie is off to calgary to be the beat reporter for the
athletic which we love athletic great organization julian great guy calgary great city good fit
it's gonna be awesome but now who's gonna host the cj show julian from calgary that's great
isn't that crazy that remote learning thing that we have going on here it's good it's over it's
over well that's what i hear everyone is going back to school and today is the speeding ticket
harvest yes it is yeah somebody was already caught in a school zone going 100 into 30
uh here in toronto a 30 100 100 kilometers an hour in a 30 why was that the part that i highlighted
i don't know why that was the one you highlighted the 30 was too low yeah no it's that the 100 is
far too high julian just keeps moving up so quickly yes this guy gonna stop i'm glad he
finally got a break yeah yeah he's done nothing well what a just a lazy guy this doesn't work
hard i'm so happy for him because like i know like he's talked about it openly on the cj show
how much he desires just to cover the team uh day-to-day be in the press uh press box and he
gets that with calgary it's a huge step very proud of you and like cj when he goes out there
we know what happens with cj and calgary takes a couple edibles takes drugs yeah and then he goes
pee chris johnston takes drugs i'm worried about the in-person show that'll happen in calgary oh
i can't wait cj is gonna be high out of his mind i need to be there i don't know if i hope the bar
is still up enough to call my friends at hudson's maybe we can uh connect the two and have a live
show in calgary with cj and julian is that where you brought me that's where i brought you i don't
remember it well so i assume it was great it was hudson's it's a bar and then it turns into a club
and it was really fun back in the day really really fun i just haven't been there in 10 years
me in the club he did really you can see why he got married early
for anybody listening steve's dancing skills aren't great no they're fantastic i found one
i'm gonna lock it down there and then i did so i think uh 26 it's not i know i'm just giving you
a hard time you found her long before that i mean yeah yeah you met her in 19 uh now uh let me just
throw this at you uh we have another announcement uh we are adding to the network and we're hoping
that you'll join us uh as you know last year we had a little experiment with something called
game over montreal which was an idea that andrew during the stanley cup finals when the montreal
canadians that's right the montreal canadians were in the stanley cup finals he said you know what
so we're not nobody's capitalizing on the fact that that they're in the stanley cup finals we
should be owning this that was like 13 months ago i know i know i know it's that's what's so
crazy and then he's like he's like so how do you feel about you know maybe doing like a post-game
show on your youtube channel because we weren't a network yet no and uh and i said i think that's a
great idea andrew and so we they did great went back and forth with a bunch of ideas
the canadians were so good this year they followed up that stanley cup with a season
they didn't have to call up any echl players no no not at all uh and uh andrew despite all that
despite probably the worst season in montreal history i think it actually was yeah uh statistically
uh andrew fought through that and did a really compelling set of of uh and julian by the way
filled in as well a few times um compelling set of podcasts that are specifically for montreal
canadians fans and then the playoffs we thought we'll try to launch a few more so we launched
Game over Toronto, game over Calgary
Didn't quite work out with Edmonton in the playoffs
But we'll get to that
And we had
Harnish and Armand that we found at a Hamilton
Who were amazing, great duo
We had Audie
And Peter, Audie James, Peter Klein
Rahaf doing all the losses
Yes, Rahaf did, poor Rahaf did
Every relief's loss, like it wasn't even fair
And
Those did really, really well
And it seemed like they were really well received
So we thought this year
part of the whole thing here is we want to build and give people the opportunity to to to try
hosting um so we are going to launch game over in every single canadian city this year yeah that's
ottawa we're bringing back toronto that's the winnipeg uh winnipeg jets uh edmonton calgary
and vancouver and if you go to sdpn.ca right now slash careers slash careers sdpn.ca uh uh
dot store um you can check every uh every single posting out now obviously
if you're a fan of of a team let's say you're a leaf fan but you live in vancouver well that's
okay that's fine that's totally fine um if you're worried about there's a few people that that
reached out and said listen i didn't want to apply because i wasn't sure i could do every game
well we're doing teams of people so you'll actually have the opportunity to split hosting
duties with other people uh when you sign up for this and uh and obviously um you know that that
kind of takes the pressure off where you're like okay well i don't have to do 82 games
yeah yeah for whatever on top of whatever else you're doing in your life and we're very excited
about this um and so we're looking for hosts it is a paid gig um and so if you check it out
sdpn.ca careers um you can sign up obviously we need to like a bit of a demo we're going to need
to see you on camera it doesn't have to be um you know a lot of people sent us their streams and
stuff last time that can work whatever it is we just want to know what you taught what you talk
like that's it that's it that's it anything else jesse we have anything that all the info is there
if you go and you check out the uh the uh job application like it should be pretty straightforward
we're accepting applications until september 30th but if we don't find the right candidate we will
like just extend that you know keep going and find the right person we'd like to start for the
beginning of the season yeah our goal is to launch for uh game one with all these markets but yeah so
we've set the deadline date till september 30th and we might do some warm-up shows and stuff during
pre-season that won't actually make the air so you won't actually we're not just gonna throw you on
the air and be like good luck see ya yeah like we're gonna actually kind of ease you into this
this will be fun we're trying to give you your gateway to the industry like if you want to do
hosting if you want to be in the media world this could be your opening yeah so we're gonna pay you
with expo no no we're paying you with money pay you with real money financial canadian dollars
i remember when we did audie's interview he it was lunch break and he was um i believe he was
on site like i think he his job he works on construction sites today yeah so he like got
into his car and facetimed us and that was his interview and then he went back out back out to
work and now he's working at the nation's network as well doing some writing for them so really
happy for audie and happy to have peter back and everybody's back so it's kind of it's kind of a
cool thing yes we are still looking for um toronto as well like just just so you know to the team in
toronto yeah it's not going to just be the people that we already have and and so we're excited to
meet you and have you on board yeah we'll see where this goes i don't know kind of and if we
don't hire you it's because andrew berkshire hates you oh yeah remember that personally he
hates you as a person and doesn't like your team but and and if i can incentivize you applying
when you tell me what you did this summer,
I'll believe you.
Why are you looking at me like that?
I don't know.
It's hard.
Okay, listen, Steve, you have to understand,
it's kind of hard to believe that you would not be,
you know, exclusively focused on hockey at all times.
I was focusing on my little meal ticket.
Leo and his developing were a shot.
It's really good.
I've got to tell you.
Who's going to take care of you?
Hollywood kid.
Yeah.
is that going to be leo what is that from family guy oh yeah peter peter has this whole and we
won't get into it it's really inappropriate um it's a popular show um so listen uh we're really
super pumped about game over we're super proud of julian let's get into some hockey news some
of the stuff we missed this summer starting with the guy that everybody was waiting on
nazem khadri seven years 49 million dollars includes an 11 million dollar signing bonus
49 million guaranteed annual average salary of 7 million um he'll earn a base of four and a half
million with the signing bonus of two and a half uh this year while carrying a cap hit of seven
million bucks as uh obviously as it happens but his base is going to be his cap hit from last year
yeah not bad how bad yeah so he already signed so the day he signed he gets 11 million hilarious
and then he gets a signing bonus is that added on to it's not like it's 11 million and i guess
two like is 11 million not the signing book 11 million is the signing bonus but he also gets a
signing bonus of two oh i guess he gets 2.5 million dollars just next yeah no uh in the
total of his contract 11 million of his contract is being paid out in signing bonus so it's 2.5
2.5 not all at once 1 million than zero zero yes he's doing quite well every summer drinks on nas
or he makes you split the bill like lebron james in that amy schumer movie well let's talk about
this for a second that i choose to think is a bill hater movie let's talk let's talk about the
i love bill hater um let's talk about the calgary flames for a second yes are the calgary flames
better or worse than they were last year well uh i'm gonna go ahead and say they're at at least
as good if not better i'm gonna lean towards better okay why do you say that i just feel
like they're a little bit more balanced their decor i mean oh who's got a better one the list
of teams isn't longer than five maybe yeah like there are teams where i'd be like okay maybe them
maybe them maybe them they're all maybes and there's less than a half a dozen of them um
Um, really all they need to pick it up is, uh, Markstrom who was a Vestman candidate,
like in the conversation, they just need him to not be utterly terrible against their
biggest rival.
That's it.
That's all he's got to do, man.
Right.
That's all he's got to do.
He was outdueled by Jake Ottinger in the Dallas series, but everyone would have been
Ottinger was out of his mind, but he couldn't even outduel Mike Smith in that battle of
alberta series and both goalies were terrible just terrible yeah um so i i think i think they
have a more daryl sutter identity if that makes sense if i could say something about brad tree
living for a second when you when you saw that uh johnny gaudreau had signed in columbus and
everybody we talked about this a lot it was like columbus over calgary over philly over new jersey
over anywhere else he could have gone um and then and but but again people do make the comparison
columbus or calgary uh and then matthew kachuk says i'm not signing here yeah so you're gonna
have to move me and i think you know that was probably always sort of coming but had gaudreau
stuck around you think kachuk maybe would have as well that was years in the making it was it
would seem like it was coming um and we'd heard rumors about that but you hear that all the time
where players are like this guy intends to force his way out in several years and you're like sure
we'll see he signs an enormous extension yeah because he's like ah it's actually not so bad
here and they like me does he fit the window jt miller yes yes he does apparently we'll talk about
that too um brad tree living did calgary calgary tourism a huge disservice and then a huge service
oh yeah gaudreau and kachuk leaving you know we talk about players not wanting to come to canada
did did everybody not a little bit think what the hell's wrong in calgary for a minute oh
two american olympians as well like oh yeah i feel like we didn't talk about that enough but
you're right yeah like those are two of the best american wingers like certainly guys who would
have made the american olympic team had there been an olympics where nhl players uh were allowed to
go um high profile american players it just feeds into that narrative right and i for a long time
have been saying that the safest job in canada is general manager of an nhl team and brad
living i believe once mark bergevin left montreal was the longest tenured one he's got to be close
to a decade he's i want to say 2014 2014 april 28th well done there you go was he not part of
that era even before that he was under
Burke yeah he was he was under Burke and
he had a good start you know the cardiac
kids and that all they did was come back
and I think it was 2015 and Johnny
Kudrow was young and Brady Brady
Kachuk Matthew Kachuk was just a twinkle
in their eye hadn't even been drafted
yet but time went on and the flames
continued to do nothing nothing and in
one offseason he went from disaster to hero and i think he bought himself some significant time
unless the team completely sucks which i mean that's but even if even if that happens you
can't blame him for anything like at this moment for trying at this moment we should all be giving
him high fives and praise because he didn't turtle his two biggest stars left and he said
no our window is now and i'm gonna go replace them and this is what we should be asking out of
all of our gms is you have an opportunity to win go get the players that'll make you win and he did
exactly that and he he provided answers um what what the hell are the flames gonna do now that
johnny gaudreau's gone and kachuk wants out he makes the trade oh well what what happens when
huberto uh walks in a year he's not walking they go for one meal in montreal and then he signs an
extension one meal one meal at a boston pizza i assume was alan there because definitely because
the tree living zone boston pizza you see because canada humor adam do you know if alan was there
his agent i don't believe alan was at that dinner i don't believe alan was at that dinner i think
that was just between the two of them i don't believe that for a second i don't think he was
i can ask i don't believe we'll ask him the agent provocateur will be back we can ask there you go
But I don't believe he was there.
Why don't you do some work?
Why don't you get to work?
I was trying to let Alan have his summer as well.
Why doesn't he get to work?
Alan's been busy.
Yeah, he has.
He really has.
Like every one of his clients moved.
Every stinking one.
He's had a very busy summer.
Yeah.
But yeah, Huberto staying.
If Uyghur leaves, I assume that would hurt.
But are Flames fans going to be too salty about it?
I don't think so.
I don't think so.
And there's still time for that.
I also think you've got Mackenzie Wieger for this season and you could get him signed, but that's a great pickup. And I think what was interesting about that trade, and we're just at the Huberto trade right now, is that they got both. I mean, Jonathan Huberto set the record for left wingers and assisted a season last year. I know that we, like, I think Leaf fans, because we didn't make it to the second round again, forget that Austin Matthews won the heart.
need we remind you that huberdo had a record-breaking year last year record-breaking
and so that the fact that he was able to get a guy like that and a guy as good as mackenzie
wieger i i honestly he's he's the reason mackenzie wieger in one fell swoop a makes their defense one
of the best cores in the league it was already in the conversation and b i believe is there i i can't
see that because i'm blind but i believe he is their fifth highest paid defenseman he is one
two three four five that's who makes who makes more than him uh we got noah hannifin at 4.9
that's the highest paid defense none of them make five stupid rasmus anderson at 4.5 chris
tanev at 4.5 nikita zadorov at 3.7 and then mackenzie wieger at 3.2 the contracts here
are fantastic and then all of our shillington at 2.5 that shillington deal is quite nice
that's delicious um i think i think so so so then so this happens and then you go okay well
but there's still a hole in the lineup we talked about this what are you gonna do i mean you got
back one but who's gonna be the center man on the second line how are these lines all gonna you do
still have a hole there and and if you if you're if you don't have center depth you're cooked
yes i don't care how great especially when you're going to play the oilers in the playoffs
yes if you're going anywhere you have to beat the Oilers and they go and get a guy who just
loves to be an asshole to Conor McDavid specifically well okay what did they say
when when Nazem Khadri's career really turned around in Toronto because it did have a really
a downspout it was the 16-17 season and who was it against what game it was Conor McDavid where
uh early in the season Conor McDavid let's let's not revise history caved the Leafs in
all night i believe the shots were 42 to 29 something like that and but seconds into
overtime because the game went to overtime cadre stripped mcdavid of the puck there was no penalty
called and then scored to call game and that's when cadre for selkie was born and very annoying
it didn't gain enough traction there was no real basis for it yes there was who won that year who
won selkie that year probably bergeron i don't know probably but i assume like it was just the
fans being annoying who's led by steve dang name them name them
well now guess what cadre for selkie oh god when that was a bad 60 games no on twitter no
in their first game against the oilers when the flames hold mcdavid to two points
he's gonna it's gonna be cadre for selkie i think and cadre's the kind of guy that's gonna look
forward to that by the way uh sports net kept doing these hits with eric francis who's their
calgary bureau guy and eric is about as positive as you can get about the flames even in the worst
of times like uh he he's just that's just the way it is and before that hubert o deal happened he
was like i just this is a bad this is a bad summer like you just and then those two deals happen and
it's a completely different eric and it's a completely different look and i'm wondering now
um because i i asked i asked the reason the reason i started the segment with are the flames better
is i have a theory that you're gonna play a lot better when you know everybody everybody knows
they're in that window right oh yeah like i think there's an argument to be made although i think
it's a bit of an unfair one that the Leafs guys are like Nylander still like 25 and he's the
eldest I know right those guys are young young young guys Hubert Okadri uh Coleman all these
guys are 29 30 31 and this is really the peak and then it's sort of like you got the next few
years boys and that's it they have a solid I'm gonna call it at least a two-year window and I
mean if you look at their contracts it's built specifically for the next and they brought in a
guy who just won well brought in the guy who knows how to win which is so important for the second
straight year they brought in a guy who won they uh they brought in blake coleman right right gave
him a bunch of money and here's cadre give him a bunch of money and so this is this is where i'm
kind of wondering like i wonder if they're going to play better this year because they all know
it's like we have to do this together now we got to do this now well and they don't want their
effort to be a waste like what what an amazing season they had yeah are any of us going to
remember it for that no no we're going to remember it for freaking getting killed killed by the
oilers it was weird it was a really weird series like i i streamed the thing and i'm like flames
have the puck flames have the puck flames have the puck oiler scored followed by the next shift
which was the same shit and then by the end of the series it wasn't even that it was just oh
they're getting outplayed and they stink it was really weird really weird but cadre's a great
match for that team i believe him when he says he exercised his um no trade because remember that
happened yeah i believe him when he says he exercises no trade because he wanted to stay a
leaf not because he didn't like calgary i think that's 100 i believe that i believe him yeah i
think he had people uh had a narrative going about how he hated calgary and like it couldn't happen
because he turned down the no trade but it was because he wanted to stay in toronto i think
that's an easy calgary specifically right that's a very i don't know but no like really really hate
those people yeah those gosh darn cal what are they called calgary calgarians by the way he knows
joke um no like most players have the canadian teams on their no trade list even players on
canadian teams so they have a choice yeah and so the leafs had to deal with calgary he was able to
say no to it um then they had to deal with colorado he wasn't able to say no to it and then
woe is him he won a cup yeah not bad i think i think things broke cadre's way in the end yeah
i think so too um so yeah an incredible job flames fans have got to be just buzzing with
excitement i know audie and peter are for game over it's going to be a fun season
and i cannot wait for those oilers matchups they are going to be awesome like those think about
those saturday night uh uh like in the east obviously we're watching the leafs or the
canadians or ottawa whatever or some combo of both and then you get to and you know that battle
alberta's coming get ready everyone it's former leaf nazim cadre against former leaf cody cc
former leaf tyson berry former leaf zach hyman former yeah jack campbell you got them all jack
campbell no i forgot one and there's isn't there someone on a pto i want to say the oilers have
another guy uh i know that jimmy vc's on in the rangers of the pto uh yeah but he's
former ranger destined to be a ranger forever sorry rangers fans
i feel like they had like such a positive and then it's like no
you missed greg mckegg
Gregory McHenry
Calvin Picard
Actually
Calvin Pickard
I know what I'm saying
It's Star Trek
Jean-Luc
Calvin Picard is there
Brief stint
That was the 1819 season
Calder Cup champion
Calvin Pickard Jesse Blake
How dare you
He's in their minor system
So it's literally half Leafs
So they're gonna win
and it's gonna be nauseating it's gonna hurt and be bad um cannot wait i don't think that
could break worse if there's a bunch of former leafs and it's the oilers second round pick mr
picard captain picard his uh brother was a first who's his brother chet chet pickard from the
nashville predators i think no yeah haven't heard of him i don't know why i know that okay
I wish I remembered that a little bit.
Does he have a good career?
And you wonder why it's hard for me to believe
that you disconnected from hockey over August.
I just unplugged it.
You remember Calvin Pickard's brother,
who also didn't pass as an NHL player.
His name was Chet.
He was a first-rounder, and Nashville picked him.
Look him up.
Yes.
Nashville, a goalie factory.
They swung and missed on him.
All right, since we're on Chets, let's talk about Chet Hanks.
You want to do an hour on Chet Hanks
I certainly do want to do an hour of chatting
Did you guys have a white boy summer?
No that was last year
Last year was white boy summer
This year was he's sober
And being like
I think he's trying to be motivational now
Oh he's doing the
Face turn
I believe so
Chet Pickard
Zero career NHL games
Really?
He last contract
Was a contract with the Nashville Predators
From 08 to 2013
It was a minor league deal
Because he slid two years
Because he played in the minors
He only played in the AHL
And no NHL games
I remember things
Yeah I don't know why you would ever know that
I don't know
That's when I was still working at the zoo
And all I had to quell my boredom
Was Hockey News magazine
Oh you just read Hockey News
Yeah
I thought you were doing tours
no so this is when i was doing tours there was no time to read the hockey news but when i was
at the dreaded stroller rental oh no you did this you never talk about the stroller rental
because it was my least favorite and i'm positive it's part of the reason my back is fucked and also
uh uh people are really mean
well you can see how they're tired there's a lot of shit going on just tired parents
they're not trying to be mean
they just haven't had a lot of sleep
now I'm a parent and I forgive
most of them
except the motherfucker
who there were drink holders
on either side
of the back of the stroller
boom boom diaper in both
oh my god
I don't know
and I noticed
and he noticed me notice we locked eyes
and I was just like you piece of shit
like i didn't say it obviously i wanted to keep working but oh if you're out there fuck you
that was awful i just uh it's still it's not my break for quite some time can't wait to
continue to work this shift someone that was a tough day that was a shitty thing to do
yeah um i uh i also want to i want to throw out there so my girlfriend's cousin
uh worked at the zoo with steve and mrs dang yes and uh her name is caitlin oh yes yes and so
uh i just want you to know that jesse i want you to know that she's just like steve and mrs dangle
and has not stopped talking about the zoo and this is according to her family okay they had
two kids now uh her her husband jesse they're really awesome people it's like so much fun
Are their names Metro and Toronto
What's with people who work at the zoo
I don't know it's a cult man
It was a fun place
To work for 7 years
7 years you worked there
Steve the only job you've had longer
Than the job you had at the zoo name it
Sportsnet and like only just
You just passed the 7 year mark
Oh and this
I was going to say this I don't even know if you've been at sportsnet 7 years
24 oh you have oh wait 2014 8 have we been doing the show for nine goddamn yeah wow may 31st 2023
will be our longest job that will be our 10th year do you want to say i don't consider this
a job i consider this a lifestyle with my friend do you want to give a eulogy for one of your other
former careers uh leafs tv person yeah they're shutting down leafs tv and you used to work there
That's where you got your start, right?
Complicated memories with Leafs TV.
It was a tough time in my life when it came to learning.
I, frankly, got in there in part because they were like, well, he does these videos and that could be interesting.
And they let me do some things that, frankly, maybe I shouldn't have been allowed to do.
Like they're, they're like, Hey, do you know how to film stuff?
I'm like, I failed my camera test in school.
They're like, cool, here's a camera and go shoot leaf practice.
And I was like, Oh fuck.
And failed miserably, um, until I failed less.
Um, and in that way, Leafs TV was something that this industry sorely, sorely lacks.
And we're hoping to help provide with game over and maybe something else, uh, a place
to fuck up.
you're not allowed to fuck up in the big leagues you know what i mean um it still happens but
it's notable and people rip on you for it leafs tv was a place where i could
anonymously make mistakes you know what i mean that uh this highlight pack's not very good or
or i didn't shoot this very well um but like so so many people that i worked there i don't know
if i'd be here if if i didn't work there they sent me to boston to film an entire episode of uh
leaf space for leafs tv a half hour episode of television and i edited it wow i was like 20
you produced a whole half hour up to cool i produced a half hour of television
basically all of it from scratch how much how much tim brent footage made it
not a lot okay because that was the tim brent years i know was it the yeah tim brent oh fuck
there was one year i was in charge of uh basically a playoff bracket of the top plays
so i had to come up with i think it was 32 plays to go up against each other tournament style
um in a year where the leafs finished second last so it was really hard there was a nazan
cadre pre-season shootout goal there were you put a pre-season highlight in the top 32 not allowed
That's not a regular
That doesn't count
It's not a real goal
They let it
There were fights
And in the final eight
I believe there were
Two Tim Brent goals
Dude
And those were his goals
That year
They were great
He had I think
Eight goals the entire year
And a quarter of them
Made it in
Oh gosh
Wow
Dark times
And I think he might have
Had three highlights
In the top eight
Because the other one
Was him blocking a shot
With his balls
But like you producing
Half an hour of television
Is something you would do in like university
You know you're not there for that
But you're getting practice in these other disciplines
To kind of see what you like and where you want to go down your career path
But this wasn't an actual career
An actual broadcast that's going to air
The news ticker I did that
Parts of it
That's a job
Somebody's employed to do that
And I would look up and I'd be like I did that
And like you know how much it sucks
To be watching the TV at Real Sports
And it's the channel
that you work for and there's something on the screen that you made and it's spelled wrong
that happened i'm i'm that there's me being wrong on a two-story television it was yeah what did
you think of the location because everybody made a big deal about it being in a in a literal shoe
box under the gardener the best part about it was it had a big parking lot that was free the worst
part about it is it was in goddamn narnia and nowhere near the go station back when that area
of toronto was so under the underdeveloped too i mean it's just developing now now it used it's
the old industrial park in toronto right where all the sugar factories were and some of that's
still like a majority of that's still there absolutely that area of toronto should have
been called also yeah yeah and i remember we walked by a uh the shittiest looking pizza shop
i've ever seen jesse the shittiest one and it's down near st lord's market and you walk down the
street and i'm like i and steve and i are for some reason together and this is years ago but
remember that i lived near there my first place was at king and parliament street just up the
street from there yeah and so steve and i might have been walking there or something i don't know
what it was and i said i said can you imagine eating pizza from that place and steve's like
actually it's pretty good that's where that was the only pizza place that they could go to what's
it called it starts with an s and fuck you it is good okay it's probably still there right it
probably is still there um i think it's a neighborhood favorite and i was like well
maybe i'm wrong about this place it just you have to be honest it didn't look appealing from the
outside no but nothing down there did looked appealing looks great now yeah yeah was that
one of those times adam picked you up from the go station and left me there to find my own way
to adam's dude you never told me okay we gotta tell this story for nearly a full year i don't
know how long it was it felt like my entire life we jesse and i both trained to the station yeah
you came from the east i came from the west yeah and adam would pick me up and not you and but
we didn't know jesse didn't this is back in the days where jesse didn't think i got to the adam's
place i don't know i didn't drive there i didn't know i didn't know either so you guys just left
me to hang i knew you had a honda uh yeah stupid honda i drove that to the ghost station and i
took the ghost station to downtown and then adam would pick up steve and his two-seater yeah because
i did not there was none of those four seats you see nothing not this ad i had the nissan
and then it got totaled and then i had the force that i couldn't fit in yeah yeah you were too tall
for it you were yeah you wouldn't fit in his car anyway i remember berkshire getting in that he's
like this college car is too small it's a very tiny car do you find something comical about the
size of my automobile walks up steve why did you need an escort from the ghost station to adams
it was cold
I didn't like it
it's cause Adam's
a good friend
how about that
to me
not a good friend
to me
no I wasn't
I feel terrible
about it
but we didn't talk
anyway
you didn't tell me
I want everybody
to know what these
two did to me
in my early years
I know
so if you're
signing up for
game over
I don't know
if you're gonna
be treated the best
by these two guys
you gotta earn your
drive from Union
Station at King
and Parliament
brother
if I could offer
you some advice
communication is key
yes
yes
maybe talk ever hey you talk now i didn't talk much i didn't need i didn't need a drive i was a
man the squeaky wheel street car gets the grease the silent wheel uh walks yeah i took the street
and and you know eventually builds websites apps entire show programs i'm just i'm warning
everybody coming in that just be careful of adam and steve yeah imagine how much quicker we could
have got that website if jesse didn't spend all this time complaining i know
well you know he makes a point yeah no uh it was yeah it was a nice place to work it was yeah uh
i have to say i i did work there too people forget that because it was more i was more oh yeah so
when they rebrand you host the camera straight away yeah um i i worked there i did the the
official toronto maple leafs podcast for a season with uh saski stewart that's right and it was we
weren't leafs tv we at that point had switched to leafs nation network yeah you don't which was
super weird because the nation network uh yes uh where steve used to work where justin fisher used
to work and jeffler and dom and all these guys they all started there um they were also the
leafs nation network or something they released nation or something if i could offer the leafs
nation uh.com some advice hire dumber people because they keep getting their talent poached
by nhl because their talent's good yeah earl schwartz was the latest one i know he got signed
up with the carolina hurricane i tried to tell you guys man tried to tell you guys um so uh so
anyway yeah i hosted there not only were the production staff really really great i wasn't
i to give it it wasn't my full-time job right i went in there i rolled in there i did the podcast
one of six for you yeah but at the time yeah uh but i remember we did i did interviews from
everybody from like cassie campbell paschal to um will arnett came on that show um uh chris
tadfield was on that show like just unbelievable guy like when you think about it you're like
these interviews were insane yeah um and uh and you know obviously i don't know how many people
actually listen to the show i've never actually known that number but it was pretty cool and
occasionally and this was right around the time austin and mitch and willie got to the team
you would see the players come off the ice for uh they're after they're like 10 a.m skate
and we would just be starting the podcast and we would be in the restaurant and so the players come
in and the restaurant actually cooks their food for them and they eat and i remember frank corrado
steal all the tomato sauce yeah probably we should ask frank about that but one thing i really noticed
at the time and this is an odd observation is that like the team was very young right team was
very young and you could tell with certain adults um just based on their the broadness of their
shoulders and the thickness of their muscles who's the adult and who's the person who eventually will
be an adult yes yes you're legally an adult but physically you're not the one person who was
absolutely an adult from game one is austin matthews yep that was that's a man right there
i was like i remember walking by i'm like oh my god he's he's ripped and he's like again 18 yeah
uh it was it was crazy i remember i ran into mike babcock there and he said uh he said excuse me and
i said oh i'm so sorry and he said no problem no problem wow and they went for his run what a great
interaction i know it's it's fantastic his runner it's a great it's a great sports interaction
there steve hey um and so i think you know like ultimately it was a good training ground for all
of us it was fun to say i worked for the toronto maple leafs for a couple seasons that was cool
um ah but i remember what what leafs tv did that was so ahead of its time and nobody's done this
since it's put me on television they created what is now in effect discord but for toronto
maple leafs fans they had leaf space leaf space was so ahead of its time it was like my space but
for leafs fan you made your own profile you interacted back and forth with the leafs fans
steve used to moderate those chats and i bet they were bananas but the game chats weren't
that difficult they were challenging but not difficult um i think we'd have like several
hundred to a couple thousand people in there well think about that not now though no 2008
eight yeah well i remember i think it was the francois beauchemin trade or something like that
there were 22 000 people in there holy smokes and i was alone it was quite approved comment
approved comment approved approved that was one had a swear word fuck all right
and this is so anyway it's a um it's a i'm glad you brought that up jesse that's a really good
point monica monica with a k deserves a little shout out too yeah she was like a lead host on
that she was awesome i'm trying to find uh some of your blue line podcast videos i don't know if
they're up anymore yeah it seems like they've all been taken down off the website but there's one
their facebook page they haven't taken down uh some of the content so there's there's a little
baby so some of the promos that you had uh up are still up by the way you said you know i'm
wearing that toronto arenas jersey do you think that they gave that to me you had to give it back
oh yeah they brought it down from the store they're like put this on hide the tags okay we're
bringing it back oh my god no free gear nothing i was like i'm gonna get a leafs jersey out of
this for sure right nope and i was like okay if i take the money that you're paying me which is
very tiny and i spent it at the lease store is there a discount nope i was like all right well
fine then yeah when i try and go to the video that's linked it's been taken it's been taken
that's a bummer well it's too bad but you know what it was time and you know the interesting
thing about that idea and we'll move off this in a second but i think you'll find this interesting
do you know the reason why leafs tv was created in the first place um mark askin i don't know
okay so friend of the show and one of our first major guests richard petty who was the ceo
of maple leaf sports and entertainment at one point um richard petty wrote a little bit in
his book it's a little bit in um in sean fitzgerald's article about it uh and it's
out there in interviews that essentially what was happening is the Leafs were really bad at the time
and it's hard to imagine this now because sports rights are worth so much money now but back then
2006 2007 the big NBA deal hadn't happened yet and the NHL like was on the outdoor life network
in the states it was really passe and the Leafs were were terrible so TSN which is owned by now
bell but back then was ctv globe media and um sports net which used to be a ctv property
which then was transferred to rogers it was called ctv sports net believe it or not
um they both were like playing games with maple leaf sports and entertainment they're like
they're like wow we don't want to pay that much we'll get back to you yeah okay richard we'll
call you back imagine that's toronto maple leaf yeah well yeah we'll call you we'll call you
you wait in line toronto maple leafs for us local broadcast changed a few years later right
and so what richard petty said was fine what we're going to do is we're going to launch our
own channel and we're going to have our games on our channel and you're going to have to subscribe
and pay seven dollars a month on your cable package and you'll get all the leafs games and
we're doing them and they hired john shannon former uh head of hockey night in canada that's
right they hired a bunch of hosts who ended up being there for like 10 15 years glenn healy was
on there big daddy bob mcgill paul hendrick paul hendrick was there and they were all going to be
the game crew and what happened was all of a sudden that perked up the broadcasting companies
and they were like oh we don't like this so what did they do instead of buying the rights
they bought the team bell and rogers are part owners with larry tannenbaum of the toronto
maple leafs raptors marley's tfc they wanted the content they wanted the content they bought the
whole fucking thing so instead of spending yeah instead of spending several million whatever it
was to buy the rights to the team they spent hundreds of they probably spent billions buying
it no we need those tuesday night panthers games like they weren't putting the cream on the crop
no and honestly rogers didn't even end up buying that big deal that they have now with the nhl
until 2013 so as long anyway i just thought it was kind of neat because richard petty essentially
it's like um it's that's that scene from um from moneyball where uh uh they're at the trade
deadline and they're trying to go after that reliever and brad pitt's calling uh another
general manager going what does it take to get him off your hands so he can take the market away
and make sure this other guy is traded to him yeah uh essentially richard petty created a third
competitor to piss off the other two which i think is cool and it worked it worked you don't need a
cable channel anymore though no right if you care about like uh sports media in canada sean
fitzgerald's article on leafs tv is a fascinating read like even good job even little tidbits like
john shannon's budget for the year he was given seven million dollars and to think a seven million
dollar budget for the entire year that's something sportsnet spends in a couple weeks or like a
month oh my god on their broadcast you know so yeah if you're interested in this kind of seven
million for the entire year yeah so if you're interested go read it by the way cameras just
give you an idea a camera like a news camera cost you twenty five thousand dollars oh well and this
was like sort of the dawn of hd as well oh and those were hundred thousand dollars and i remember
it being a big deal we got eight we're going to hd now we're going to another big thing uh that
they were doing while i was there is they were slowly converting their tape library to digital
oh wow because you needed a room bigger than the room we're currently in full of beta tapes
and they were like you know what could save us space a hard drive these computer things
yeah they're not going anywhere and and it's and you're like oh how long did that take
forever because they had to convert it from beta tape to digital in real time oh yeah you had to
put every game on every commercial everything so you know three hour hockey game it's got a
play through three hours and they had hundreds and you have to then check afterwards for errors
oh yeah right actually oh yeah if you check if you have an error on that tape and then it makes
it to digital and then you don't and you throw that tape away so you're talking probably millions
of hours is that hard to imagine every leafs game ever something like that it has to be something
and they had do they have argos as well for something anyway it took forever it took an
eternity and they would have raptors too and yeah it was a weird transitional period for
media it's i gotta tell you hd and even when we started the show the way the leafs brand has
changed since we started like it was in the toilet there was apathy people weren't buying
tickets to the game i would and i all the highlight packs i did were for the other team
like oh here's here's ovechkin scoring two goals and a 5-1 leaf loss it was always by the way
ovechkin always did it against the leafs he has scored so many goals against the leafs it's crazy
everyone was a leaf killer it's amazing how many people like in the tail end of their career
are labeled leaf killers no were you a leaf killer or did you just debut around 2005
yeah and we're good yeah ovechkin gets laugh gets laugh crosby eric stall yeah crosby
malkin drew it's just go through the list right it's like are you a sabers killer or do you just
exist in this time yeah oh man yeah really yeah stephen stamkos really gets the sabers goat
right yeah is is that the case or is he just a star right now when they were bad for a decade
and uh yeah adam to your point about the leafs changing the brand like a lot of that credit
goes to tim lywicky who came in here for like an hour and we're just like all right i'm changing
every single thing we're going in a completely new direction and then left after everything was
kind of like in good order him doing that led to a tfc championship a raptors championship
and Dave noticed his five-year extension.
And I think two out of three ain't bad, Tim.
He's now building arenas with his brother.
I do want to mention sportsinteraction.com slash SDPN.
Of course, it's 19 plus.
Please pay responsibly.
Jesse, I'm going to run you through the football games this week.
Okay.
Okay.
I want to know who you take.
Oh, my God.
Okay.
Oh, I know.
Yeah, but okay.
Let me pull up the odds because it matters what...
What the odds are.
Yeah, yeah.
Because I know Steve knows nothing about football.
oh you watch i just sent you the link jesse now i'm going i'm going down to the steelers in
november which i'm very excited about it's gonna be my first football game in like five years
well because here's the thing with if natalie mom's mom told me she's like i'm from pittsburgh
if you want uh your girlfriend to be accepted by the family she must first be indoctrinated
into the church of pittsburgh and so that's what we're gonna go do which is kind of exciting so
i'm excited for that those trips to uh nfl games are so much fun i did one before the pandemic to
the buffalo to go see a game there it's unbelievable if natalie comes back and
pronounces things correctly i'm going to be disappointed yeah put it down put it down
i want to uh i'm trying to find a way to get on get her on the gateway clipper i think i've told
you about this before it's this big floating boat of 5 000 people and it goes back and forth
across the river all day long bringing steelers fans over to the stadium and you can hear the
chants getting louder in the distance as this thing comes in and it docks right under a statue
with mr rogers who is from pittsburgh wow there you go i did not know that very exciting so jesse
yes this week our football line of sports interaction.com you got the jets at 3.48
which i think is actually really good odds for the jets and then baltimore at 133 are you taking
jets or you taking baltimore on that uh i'll take the ravens yeah yeah lamar jackson comeback season
he's he's out for vengeance he needs a new contract at the end of the year he's gonna go
out there and dominate and uh there's nothing positive about the jets except for their new
yeah they're so bad um uh uh la oh you didn't you didn't ask me oh i'm sorry steve who are you
taking j-e-t-f this should be against the spread too it matters so it's uh ravens minus seven oh
okay all right all right so we got la buffalo here buffalo is the favorite but only by a little
yeah who would you take in the first game i think there's a lot of pressure on buffalo from buffalo
fans because this is supposed to be the year are they going to screw it up i got in game one uh
rams minus two or rams plus two okay sorry all right i got uh buffalo doug flutie's gonna have
a big there you go houston and indianapolis houston which is supposed to be they're supposed
to be the worst team this year right are they worse than the jets i got i got the bears i got
houston being a scrappy good team i like davis mills i like uh damian pierce their new running
back uh brandon cooks is always consistent so then are the colts that much better or is this
one where you take houston as a sleeper i have i have houston a lot higher than most people
so but uh and like plus seven i don't know i i would take houston in this game just because i
don't know i don't have a lot of faith in the cold okay all right jonathan taylor is great but like
i'm not believing it two more games to go i think jonathan taylor thomas is going to do great and
the colts will win what did you call him jonathan taylor thomas you know who that is right who's
he's the lion king kid and he was also in home improvement with the voice of simba
yeah he basically had like this career from like 13 to 19 where he was you know simba and the lion
king he was on the biggest show on television and then he was like i'm done now yeah good for him
we don't even get pictures of him anymore we stand uh and then okay you got carolina
uh with their new car this is so easy and cleveland carolina carolina baker mayfield
revenge game yes against cleveland how crazy is that uh and then lastly um dolphins and patriots
dolphins are favored in this game which is kind of surprising because they're the dolphins and
the patriots are always the patriots despite the fact that the patriots have fallen from grace
the miami dolphins are a notable screw-up team and the patriots are a notable wow they're
surprises they're better than we thought the the dolphins hype i think is too people online love
uh tua their quarterback yeah to a crazy extent like they
they added tyreek hill and they still got jaylen waddle
uh but the hype's too much and like the pats themselves have had a weird off
season so this is what bill belichick did i'll
tell you guys a little story so you know how you like hire a coach for a position
yeah he decided to hire two guys for one position
and they have two offensive coordinators so in their own right they have a very
wonky coaching staff but they're the pats they should be able to get it done
versus the dolphins in week one so i would go with the path yeah bet
against drew bledsoe at your own peril i got the bats as well by the way you can bet almost popular
and win 83 bucks as well which is kind of cool sportsinteraction.com sdpn to sign yourself up
dave bass will be back thursday and by the way i should mention we are doing um we're doing shows
tuesday and thursday through september and then as soon as we hit october we're going to be back
to our normal monday wednesday friday um uh and um julian and chris will be doing mondays and
thursdays throughout the season so just in case you're wondering about that agent provocateur
will be back but there'll be you know as we do we don't have like a normal posting schedule for that
right it's sort of like when we have the episode ready we'll let you know i like but it'll be most
weeks i like equally anticipating yeah let me forget you and then let me remember you oh hooray
and to update another show on the network our promo department actually just sent a message
to Steve Dangle to do
a live read on the show
for a show that's coming up.
So Steve, if you want to take it away.
This Wednesday, it's a podcast for the ages.
An NFL season preview episode
episode, you fucking
idiot, featuring
a take on all 32
NFL teams. That's right.
An NFL episode about
NFL teams where Jesse
talks about the NFL
to get you ready for the NFL
season NFL.
this wednesday at 5 p.m an nfl podcast for the nfl season on youtube.com slash stpn that's
youtube.com slash stpn or search the jesse blake sports report wherever you get your podcasts
touchdown did you write that uh i know i just found the promo department it's amazing
also um are you doing that live is that like a live stream no it's already been recorded
I got it he's already done yeah and so it's already how are the Steelers gonna do this
year just give me a little preview good Steelers um I'm worried because their offensive line
it sucked last year and they didn't get any better and uh their offense is gonna be run
through uh Najee Harris running the ball and if you don't have an offensive line I'm worried you
can't run the ball you can't run the ball and is Trubisky actually the starter uh I think they'll
go with Mitch for game one I don't know yet who they who they've I haven't checked in with Tomlin
but like all mike tomlin has done in his career is win yeah so there is that winning culture there
but like you lose your top wide receiver in juju and like you're going with george george pickens
and um chase claypool like there's not a lot of stars there and i'm just worried about the
offensive line failing for the perhaps perhaps the most shocking thing of mike tomlin's career
is how much he kept a lid on antonio brown yeah for years for years and then antonio brown left
and then it all happened he's gonna come back that's what he says who knows if if pittsburgh
finds a way to win this year it's because tomlin put together a great game plan throughout i don't
think other than bruins fans hating tuka rask for no reason i've never seen a group of fans
dislike a coach as much as steel some steelers fans do and a coach who continually wins like
he continually wins and they're like you know what i remember it's you know what it's similar
to what barry trotz was in washington when when like i remember going into that season we were
having discussions like yeah this might be barry trotz last year and i we went through like his
record we're like this is really really good i feel like caps fans were like wait no and then
no but then they're like we had cast fans going yeah it was time for him to go and then he wins
a cup and then it's like well it's still time just had to have had to go had to happen i don't i
don't know that it did capitals um jt miller let's talk about jt miller new contract we had
wondered for a while if if this was actually going to happen because the rumor was he was
going to get traded now um i believe it is seven years eight million per it has him in the
sticking sticking with vancouver until he's 37 assuming he doesn't get traded
and president jim rutherford told sports nets in mcintyre that miller is the type of player you
want to uh where you have to take some risk eventually you do have to take some risk but
the canucks just started the plan whatever the plan is do you think sometimes that you're almost
made to sign a guy because the value out there is just not there yeah unpopular uh opinion maybe i
think they made the right choice um i know a lot of people are saying that's too rich for him but
i agree i don't think the trade was there um and if it was they would have made it um because at
the end of the day you're not gonna get that huge package for jt miller unless the team who's
trading for him feels like they can re-sign him and if they don't feel like they can re-sign him
they might offer you a package but it's not going to be that ridiculous one it wasn't there so now
you got a guy who you know one of the one of the things about Nazem Kadri is he had that monster
season last year but he doesn't really have a track record of that he has a track record of
scoring 30 goals he has a track record of being an extremely good 2c but for one season he produced
at 1c and a lot of people despite liking him are betting on that not happening again right JT
I think his contract reflects that, seven years, $7 million.
That's what a high-end second-line center makes,
especially in free agency.
I think it's cheap, personally.
A lot of people didn't like that one either
because he's going to be old by the end of it.
That's what a player of his quality makes.
And JT Miller has a longer track record of being this guy.
He brings a lot.
I think the Canucks are better than people give them credit for we saw that under Bruce Boudreaux
we knew that when they were at their lowest last year before firing Travis Green they are too
talented to be this bad are they a playoff team I think so are they a contender I think that might
be a bit aggressive but they're there they're there they're a good team and they're certainly
not going to get better uh by getting rid of jt miller and by and when you get rid of jt miller
you got to replace jt miller what team is giving up a jt miller replacement nobody so you'd have
to draft it as the now that this is this was the leafs dilemma after extending kneelander and
martin matthews those contracts would look a lot better if the cap went up at the rate it was
supposed to but then the world stopped uh so the canucks are betting on the world not stopping
which i would like to bet on as well um so i think it's a fair bet once every hundred years
yeah i think they're gonna be fine okay i think the canucks are gonna be fine uh decent deal um
it also sort of i feel like this establishes that uh remember we were talking about petterson
making 10 yeah i'm with him not playing very well frankly and even if he improves i think it's going
to be really difficult for him to make significantly more than miller right long term okay he might
maybe not significantly more uh also uh some news moving off of jt miller um
uh a player with 56 career goals was given a 50 million dollar contract this offseason
56 career goals 56 career goals don't say it jesse oh i think i know who it is who is it
is it tage thompson stage thompson so there's a guy who's 50 million dollars now he did it once
exactly and i was just going to play that out because here's the thing people forget now the
buffalo sabers uh were really bad the year before but in 38 games he had eight goals and six assists
the next year last year 78 games 38 goals 30 assists 68 points wasn't it last year his first
full season at center yeah last it was uh yeah the uh the 38 goals comes as his first year as
a centerman so they think they've unlocked something here but there's a long history
of overpaying guys for their one season where they're shooting percentage matt baleski
where their shooting percentage spikes by like more than triple i believe his shooting
percentage before was like five percent and last year was 14 you know and everything goes in they're
hoping that this is who he is but my thing with the deal is you didn't have to make it now why
didn't you just wait it out and if he does it again give him the same deal i don't think if
he does it again is it going up that substantially maybe it's a couple hundred thousand but you have
them under contract for this season you don't want to i think buffalo has to worry about uh
losing guys right like we we always talk about the uh the no trade list it's it's canada and
it's buffalo you know what i mean buffalo who the states keep trying to offer us in a trade
we will trade you buffalo in exchange for all the tim hortons franchises or something like that
um they they they have to worry about retention more than other teams but even to that point his
expiry on this deal that he's currently on would have been an rfa contract can't go anywhere yeah
and as a gm you have so much leverage on guys like that it's i'm listen wait it out and wait
halfway through the year if i can add one more thing to that before you get into this
he's got a modified no trade that kicks in after this coming season i'm trying to pick my spots
with buffalo because we really hammered them and i gotta tell you what uh kevin adams came out of
this looking really good uh they to date have won the jack eichel trade to date no question no
question we'll see how that goes but so far they're looking really good they got money to spend but
here's the thing alex tuck was brilliant people are always like oh they got so much cap space yes
until they don't and they need it right yeah it's you eat it up very fast um so i want to i want to
pick my spots with the sabers but all the points you're making are pretty valid man they're pretty
valid wait wait a couple months make the deal in january see if how he does half a season that it
wasn't just an anomaly well that's right it you're right jesse does not kick in until after this
season yeah you could you had a whole season to see if tage is the real deal like doesn't i love
tage thompson he was my picture uh most what was it most underrated player remember we did those
awards underrated or improved improved yeah i love tage but i just want to see him do it again
Yeah, that's a, oh, man.
It's a risk.
At a certain point as a GM, you have to take a risk.
I'm just not sure that this is it.
Who's their goalie?
Well, who they have under contract is Craig Anderson and Eric Comrie.
I'm imagining that those are their guys.
That's still kind of tough.
Malcolm Subban is on injured reserve.
I'm not sure how injured he is.
Goalie slash anthem singer.
There you go.
Yeah.
That's a thing that happens.
The Pagoulas will like that.
They save a little money.
yeah we already we already pay you jessica pagula into the round of 16 i saw that yeah
she's eighth ranked in the world she's the number one female american tennis player in the world
right now wow so people have been saying i've been mad at the pagulas for being distracted and i'm
like well if my kid was the eighth ranked in the world i know what i'd be focused on uh not that
they are but i'm like i'm just telling you if i own the sabers and everly was eighth ranked in
world i don't give a shit about the sabers sorry like a team yeah sell the team and use the money
to go to all the games yeah matches whatever i don't think they need i think yeah they get it
for no money to sell yeah the weird thing about being eighth in the world is i think you get free
tickets no also i think they're billionaires oh yeah they're billionaires they could literally
buy the tour i don't think they'd even need the free tickets no you're wrong you're wrong
yeah anyway it's it's been a uh it's been a treat i want to i want to i want to ask you guys about
this okay the winnipeg jets i don't know if you guys saw this this summer winnipeg jets came out
with uh on august the 17th that's how long ago long i've been saving this one they want to
celebrate a few famed jets now the franchise has been around for 10 years it's about time
that they start celebrating people that play for them you're gonna bring up thrash thrashers
uh i don't know uh jets would like to celebrate tamu solani and tempo numenum with hall of fame
inductions never played for your franchise neither of them and this is why i keep telling you and
people are like you're wrong you're stupid records should belong to the city they happened in not to
the franchise that moved to arizona in 1996 because under the current rules i don't understand
Neither Solani or Newman are eligible to be raised to the rafters of the current Winnipeg Jets.
I don't understand why people are protective of that.
I think there's some sort of like, somebody actually really made a good argument with me once on Twitter about like, there's like, I forget what it was.
And I apologize if this was you, because I was driving them crazy because I kept repeating it.
And they're like, I'm just going to kill you.
And I was like, okay.
And then.
No, I know Coyotes fans are not happy.
Well, it wasn't a Coyote fan, but it was just somebody who's like a stats person.
Who's like, well, this is how it negatively affects the stats.
And I was like, okay, but, and I remember reading it.
I was like, that's a sensible argument.
But at the same time, I'm like, it's about the fans.
You shouldn't have allowed them to be called the Jets.
Yeah, maybe that was it.
You gave Winnipeg a team back and you called them the Jets.
They're the Winnipeg Jets.
They're alternate.
Guys, that's the Winnipeg Jets.
Stop it.
Stop it.
you weren't oh yeah you were just going to jet skates all the time there you're just commuting
from arizona fuck off stop it stop it all it belongs to the city i stop records belong in
the city that they can't you know what that's what i believe down to this comes down to these
leagues run by all these owners they don't look at it as these teams are owned by the fans and
like the records they look at is this is my company and my toy and my team yes and if i
move it to there i still get all my stuff and legally it is like stan crown key owns the um
the los angeles rams they used to be in st louis he picked up the team from st louis and moved it
to la he's not saying if there's another football team in st louis they get all my records no i get
my super bowl i won in st louis and now it's a part of the la rams this is my team not the fans
team and that's these billionaires being like no the jets these aren't these jets those are those
No one's taking your ring, man.
No.
It should be with the fans.
It's the wrong way to do shit.
Given how things have gone since they moved to Arizona,
the Arizona Coyotes would want to hang on to the Winnipeg Jets records
because they're much better.
Honestly, the Jets of the 80s are way better than people give them credit for.
Is there an Avco Cup banner in Arizona?
No, I wouldn't think so.
Then what the fuck?
They won it.
Honor your franchise.
remember your your past your history for people that don't know what the avco cup is uh it's for
the wha that's right it's basically the stanley cup of the wha and the jets i want to say won
the last one so they're still the reigning avco cup champ undefeated undefeated dude stop it please
stop it anyway i loved it i just thought it would drive the hockey people like you guys mad so
stupid i hope the game is against the owner to get away from that i like it for the fans though
i like that the jets are doing oh yeah i like that the current jets are doing this this is
what should happen i agree these guys were legends in that city absolutely they should be honored i
think adam uh wild just watched the temu solani trade tree that i i didn't i haven't seen it yet
you fucker i know i'm sorry it's really good how many years does it go uh oh like what's the spread
on that it's not still going but okay put it this way so it happened i think it was in 1992
the trade no that was his 70 whenever the trade was i think it was 96 95 or 96 it helps the ducks
win the 2007 cup wow yeah it's good trade it got the ducks cory perry whoa yeah
how's that for a tease how's that for a tease go find out how on the sportsnet youtube channel you
know what if i was the guy that bought i'm assuming it's a guy whoever bought the jets
and said we're moving them to arizona the true north people no it wasn't true north true north
oh the other way sorry my bad um i would have been like okay i'll buy your team but if you
trade solani deals off like think about what solani would have been in arizona
oh i know right with kachuk and craig janney and jeremy ronick and nikolai habibulin they
weren't a bad team no they were tepo neumann they were a really good team actually alexis was
alexis jamnoff i think jamnoff was there as well because he was a jet leaf killer
probably eddie olchuk might have been on that team for a bit uh i know he was a jet for one
yeah for sure i mean i mean less of a star we love you dallas but less of a star i just think
it's one of those where i can't believe that solani got traded before the team moved that
should have been something that they held on to that guy yeah it's that should be something that
adds value yes also that was the mid 90s and there was no cap and players were making stupid money
i think that was right before joe sakic is still if i'm not mistaken the highest paid player to
ever play you make like 19 million or something yeah and this was season over a quarter century
ago something like that yeah yeah that this is the problem is that like you know when people say
oh there's no issue with the salary cap it's like yeah for the players actually there is like
revenues have gone up yeah that's a huge issue it's a complete opposite sundine was the highest
paid leaf in history until like 2000 i remember he signed an extension it was like 8.8 million
dollars a year or something i think that was nothing i think the highest he made was over
nine yeah crazy a little over nine yeah yeah yeah like gretzky was making eight million or
nine million for the for the kings in 1990 think about that right and you think a nine million
dollar now some cadre can't even get nine million today as as part of the gretzky trade from
edmonton to la um the oilers got 15 million dollars which sounds like nothing like in the
grand scheme of things uh but it could have bought you at the time gretzky five times over
wow i think yeah yeah well i don't know if you guys remember the brian we had the brian
burke interview during the pandemic and if you've forgotten about it you can be uh uh you can be
forgiven because who hasn't forgotten everything about that but um about the pandemic not brian
brian was awesome no no one forgets brian but uh um you know he talked about in the book
how if they were going to trade for gretzky they would have had to raise ticket prices and they
weren't sure they'd be able to sell them and i thought okay so you get you're getting wayne
gretzky and you're afraid you won't sell out that's the economics of the nhl vancouver in the
late 80s can you imagine imagine like you know what guys we're gonna trade for sydney crosby
but i'm a little concerned about uh people showing up man ah we're gonna get conor mcdavid in his
prime i'm not sure people are going to see it we have to raise the prices i don't know if we can do
it that's crazy and then years later he said toronto couldn't support a second nhl team
gretzky did no no burke yeah i think there's a business case to be made for that i think he's
wrong um eventually he will be wrong city gets bigger eventually he can support two teams yeah
maybe at the time he was correct yeah but i think i certainly now i would i would maybe look at that
differently there's a lot of money here um and like mcdavid back to the contract thing that's
a player who should be making oh 25 million based on like the other sports and how athletes are
actually paid uh based on their market value mcdavid should be in the 20 million something
range did you mcdavid is more than four million dollars better than jt miller you know what i
mean and that's not meant to be an insult to jt miller it's meant to be the the biggest star in
this league like he might not be he might stop being the highest paid player in the league like
in a year in less than a year basically if the salary gap goes up yeah well because of nathan
mckinnon as well like he's he's gonna get i don't know nathan mckinnon on the open market should
probably fetch 13 million dollars what's the max is 13 the max at 82.5 it's how much max is 15
But like we already know
Players have been offered 13 million dollars
Panarin
Panarin I believe Tavares
By the Sharks
Mitch
Columbus
I don't know if they offered him 13
They offered him more than he got
Which was almost 11 million dollars
Yeah man
Anyway
Where were we going with all that
Go Jets
Yeah and that'll be nice
It'll be a nice story for them
And that's great
and uh i'm sure dave bastl will be at that game in his original tame usulani jersey which i'm
sure he's got stuff in a cupboard somewhere i'm sure he will be and when they score they'll play
the goal horn oh no that's mean no yeah you're right uh you know that we're like six weeks away
from seeing nhl hockey at asu wow i'm excited for it man i don't want to trash codies anymore like
they're they're they're done they make dumb business decisions sometimes but man that is
going to be a fun watch i mean listen i maintain my stance on it but it's done yeah so it's done
it's happening so this is the just enjoy it part yeah wait like listen you're not always going to
be in an ideal situation but sometimes you got to make the best with the situation you're in
and they're playing in a closet and they need to make the best out of it we shouldn't downplay
how absurd the spectacle
is going to be.
Certainly it is.
Like, it's going to be
a fucking wild watch.
I'm sure ESPN's just dying
to play that game on ESPN1.
You know what it reminds me of?
No, it's not.
Of course.
It might.
Just for, holy shit,
look at this.
It does make the NHL
look a bit silly.
I want Stephen A. Smith
at ASU.
Me too.
But here's the thing.
The one good thing
I'll say out of this is,
and we've said this before,
I think that they're,
and I'm not just being
obnoxiously positive here,
the one good thing
that could happen
is it could, like,
you know when you see
a band in a smaller environment and it's awesome
and then you see them in this thing and it's still awesome but it's
not as intimate. I get it. You're getting
hockey on an intimate level. It's expensive.
The tickets are not cheap.
But if you can fill that barn every night
and if you can have some fun and
develop a real
following there, it's
going to carry them for the next decade. What
a golden opportunity
for Arizona to rip
off Canadian tourists.
Oh, absolutely.
I'm sure it's sold out.
what hey get some advice from your neighbors uh in vegas yeah okay oh actually jesse because
steve's probably going to be doing streams do you want to go down yeah let's try it let's go
you want to do some research i'm only doing the stream saturday well i work during the week so
oh yeah you said fuck me you know what i could take a few days off and we could do a live podcast
down in arizona oh i gotta work i'll just go watch hockey ah let's go see the leafs let's go
see the leafs play in arizona let's do it i want to do it we can do that right i want to see
matthews score a hat trick in a 5 000 person venue yeah we need to see matthews you know what it
reminds me of like i remember there was a the leafs rarely do this but there was a pre-season
game at rico now coca-cola coliseum so it was the home arena of the toronto marlies and
patrick marlo was playing that night and i remember just being like it's odd and frankly
not right that patrick marlowe's playing in this building yeah yeah it's weird yeah that he's
playing here and like sydney crosby's going to play at asu conor mcdavid's gonna play at asu
that's bananas i went to the coyotes website it says single game tickets check back later
this summer for single game ticket opportunity so we'll see where that goes later this summer
so the website's like two weeks from it right now they're only selling like five game packages
10 game packages suites that sort of stuff so i don't know where the single game tickets are
going to come available but we should try and get down there for a game um the one for me like if
this leads to sustainable hockey in arizona as a market then it's a good thing yes yes like if this
is the this the path you had to go through if you go through the mud and this is your arena for the
next couple years but then you get 20 years 30 years 50 years of this franchise then it's all
good yeah then thumbs up to you and more austin matthews talent please yeah arizona could turn
into the hockey hotbed of the entire world i will still criticize the way this played out
agreed and i don't think you're wrong i don't think anybody can look at this and go no objectively
this is the right thing no and also let's also in the context of the last 15 years of what's
happened and what they've done to those fans down there right ownership changes the nhl buying it
moving it to three different cities like it's crazy but jesse's right steve's right if you
if this is what it takes well by golly and we can have it both ways so we can say the last
20 years in arizona have been awful and it's just the fans it's been a shit show and it's been a
mess but also there's a thriving hockey market there and they're trying every single way to
make it work and if this makes it work then kudos to you but it's also been really shitty along the
way no i got news for you jesse if you can't fit your entire ideology into a tweet then fuck
yourself all right or into one argument remember every conversation starts from the beginning
the man-made fire
oh my god yeah why okay what's your stance on the coyotes playing at asu
all right so there was the big bang
you're able to still see it through a really powerful telescope
it takes too long to explain but tell you what i'll do it anyway so oh god yeah hey
let's do the press conference
the steve dangle press conference
so we you may have gotten a tease about this
but i think it's only fair that we start off the press conference because we had some news to start
the show but i didn't want to stack news on stack news on stack news right for the network jesse i
think it's fair that we give steve the stage right oh yes want to explain what that uh that uh sub
tweet video thing was i made a video where i did a 360 of the blue room and then i gave a creepy
little wave in the mirror part of my little youtube button that i got for hitting a hundred
thousand subscribers i'm very close to two hundred thousand please help me get there
and when i do get there because i hope i will get there it will be in another house
in another city because your boy is moving you're leaving oshawa i'm leaving shawleywood
the bright lights were too much for me
don't laugh the community was too thriving berry hill farms was just too damn good for breakfast
it is it is actually really great breakfast amazingly no and i'm actually very sad to be
leaving oshawa because i really do like my neighborhood and i like my neighbors and the
community and everything but moving to ajax which is uh for those of you who have no idea about
toronto suburbs uh it goes here's how far i have to drive every goddamn time i come to this place
it's toronto pickering ajax would be oshawa by the way toronto when he says toronto there are
several neighborhoods that were not previously a part of toronto like scarborough which is where
steve and i are from so you have to go through those first so you're scarborough or toronto
here where we are right now this is trump this is toronto toronto proper and then we are about
a five minute drive from the start of where scarborough was scarborough goes for about 20
minutes and then it's pickering for about 10 minutes whippy for about 10 minutes ajax as well
ajax for about 10 minutes and yeah ajax first and then whippy and then nothing farmer's fields
and then oshawa i hate that that's accurate but i'm moving closer to the city and in traffic how
long does it normally take you to get here like just for a podcast how long today it took over an
hour how long will it take you from ajax i calculated that by making this move assuming
we do three episodes a week which we will i will be saving three calendar days of my life a year
In the car
Three calendar days that I will be spending in the car
Gone
I can do whatever I want
Ah
I'm going to be saving at least
40 minutes every time
Now if you'd moved to Whitby
You could have become
Mascot of the Whitby Wildcats
Minor League Association
Are you aware of the name of the Ajax
Minor Hockey League Association
They're the Ajax Knights
And there's another one
uh i didn't they amalgamate with the pickering panthers ajax raiders my friend ajax raiders
ajax pickering raiders so the reason i know about the knights is very briefly during my fourth year
of university um i got a little side job at my friend's dad's sporting goods store uh and i i
steamed the stop signs you know the stop signs they put on the back of jerseys to make sure you
don't hit people from behind i steamed the stop signs onto the back of ajax knights jerseys oh
cool yeah i've never done that is it satisfying it looks satisfying like when you steam that stuff
on no the whole time i was just like i hope i don't fuck this up that's how i go into most
things so why are you moving um we wanted a bigger house for our our son who's getting
taller and more
childlike instead of toddler
like. Less paperweight.
Less paperweight and oh he's a very fast
paperweight. Yeah.
And we wanted to move further west. That was always
the plan was to
get a little closer to Toronto.
We people
I had someone go why'd you move to Oshawa in the
first place and I was like because that's all we could afford.
But then it
became this place that we grew to love
and I'm very sad to
be leaving. Now, Jesse,
I understand that you're going down there on
Friday. No, he already
went. Two weeks ago?
Yeah, I
think so. Two weeks, yeah. To see what is going
to be the new blue room. Yeah. So there will be another
blue room. It's ginormous. It's bigger than
like this space. Yeah, so
basically, it's long.
It's long. Yeah. So
basically what I could do is on one
wall, I could unwrap the entire
blue room as it is right now
and just...
I could make it so that you could barely tell I've moved.
Or I could completely change the design.
What do you think you're going to do?
I don't know.
I don't know.
I think I'm going to change it a little bit.
Maybe we should get some voting going on in the Discord.
Like, do we want some change?
Do we want a glow up?
A little bit of a glow up?
And here's another.
Well, I won't eyeball where I nail everything, so I'll actually measure it out.
But I've stopped collecting memorabilia.
We're talking about this.
Yeah, because there's no room.
there's no friggin room like there wasn't any room in the blue room and then there were i thought
there was no room and then i found room and then stuff had to go in the storage room and then i'm
giving away stuff and no now i can start accumulating stupid shit so if you're hanging
it on the wall so if you got some dolls you want to sell i'm your guy for your figures you have an
opportunity here where you need stuff now to fill up the extra space yeah not a lot but when we're
doing the tour like there was a lot of there's a lot of cool ideas on what you can do with that
space like in in the middle like we were talking about um you know those those lights that are
also uh jumbotron yeah and you would have like a true center ice there if you want to put in
maybe some fake ice carpet or something like hardwood whatever you want to do like there
there's a it's gonna be cool once you finish it yeah it's gonna be a little bit has to go up
that's priority one yeah but you can build like a true space where you got different kind of sets
studio sets in many
different locations. It'll be awesome.
And that's what I currently do in the Blue Room,
but it's like, I literally
turn the camera because the
room is so small. Every house
we saw, and we didn't
mean to move, by the way.
So I wanted to move
next summer. My wife wanted to move right away.
So we compromised and we're moving right away.
And
every room I saw
that I thought could be the prospective
Blue Room, I was like,
it just doesn't feel big enough and then i would come home to the blue room and be like oh jeez
this is i always forget how tiny that room is it's 11 by 11 that's it 11 feet by 11 feet
and it's flooded several times actually no it's 11 by 10 and it's flooded i mean let's think like
are you so glad are you gonna do some sort of tribute to the blue room the og blue room what
at my parents house well i guess that did you call it the blue room when it was your bedroom
no but it was blue okay so the the first real blue room was this little setup that you had at
your house it was the first room that i owned it was all right and it was dedicated to your
videos and beliefs and my bed wasn't in the back like let's talk about let's yeah yeah and there
wasn't a a window shining light into the camera lens you're white blind yeah you'd white blinds
and he'd shoot in the middle it was just this there's two windows in the new blue room uh one
i'm getting blackout for and the other i'm literally going to cover with a wall smart
smart because i don't need it can we talk about can we talk about the changes that you've undergone
or that your channel has undergone in the 10 years in there because i can i got a couple
things i want to prompt you on oh man i was looking up some old conversations yesterday
and i we're on a chat with um uh ourselves obviously and producer chris who was who
predates jesse was here for about a year and a half and then jesse took it from there that's
right and steve was hyper excited jesse about a video hyper pumped about this video do you know
what you gotta remember the 13 14 lease were trash dave boland got off to a hot start got injured it
was bad yeah and uh and steve was very excited because he had a video and this is i'm not making
fun of you this is something to be quite proud of sounds just different in 36 hours you're like
i just had a video hit 2500 views wow and you were like this is this is really good this is
really really good wow and and you think about it now in 24 hours you can have a video go 60 70 000
or more something i've your standard goes up every time like i've never found a sweet spot
yeah where you feel well you always want to improve but i just think it's cool to say
in that time in that little room what you were able to accomplish and make a career out of is
pretty spectacular and i think there should be some some some reverence for that thank you oh
no i'm i'm very sad and the reason i posted that video when i did i've already taken two of the
walls down i've already not the actual walls like all the stuff on it because i just want it to be
uh easier to pack but i got i got three more trade trees i need to shoot in that room
uh i don't think we will have started dang it's our hat picks by the time we move
and then uh i've left up the leaf wall because i'm anticipating some trades and i'm leaving it
up in case i have to make lfrs because here's the handy thing that we've done uh we actually sold
that house so it's going to stay in the family if i want to shoot videos in there i can because
uh we've sold it to uh my brother and sister-in-law amazing and if for some reason something
happens with the blue room to be i can just be like oh well and drive to oshawa and shoot the
video and hopefully they don't mind me screaming i might have to shoot morning after videos
for that maybe maybe i just think it's pretty neat i just think it's funny how yeah oh it's
That room helped get me through the pandemic.
Like I basically took almost everything off the wall and redid it just for
something to do.
Like it's so slowly losing my mind.
You know what sucked and I'm not going to do again.
Uh,
double-sided taped soundproof foam to the ceiling.
That was not fun to take off.
Well,
and guess what?
It doesn't sound worse now that I've taken it off.
That was just a,
that was a physical manifestation of a mental breakdown.
oh my god you don't need it i just want you to know too that when steve started in that room
let's talk about your equipment just for a second what were you using uh i was so your stand for
your camera was a shoebox on a table right a couple books a couple textbooks from ryerson
couple textbooks no it was a canadian dictionary and a book of george carlin jokes there you go
and it was i believe it's called brain droppings and what kind of camera
uh a canon rebel t3i and underneath so it's a it's a dslr camera and it's laying flat on a book
there's no um tripod for it so it's laying flat on a book the lens though is not at the bottom
of the camera it's not flush with the bottom right right so it would tilt down so to keep
it from tilting down i put a pack of hockey cards under it a pack of about eight hockey cards
and it was i can't believe they let me on tv with this shit and uh because when you did the tank
video where you were saying the leaf should tank for matthews and kiprios called you a loser on
hockey night in canada yeah that was your setup yeah that was uh yeah the tank that rolls across
the screen that was uh yeah i basically just moved it down the table and yeah the little white
ikea table uh that we had uh now things have improved oh and the light was this little
basically desk lamp pixar light um with printing paper over it's right it was the desk yeah and
it was those like a ten dollar lamp and they heat they overheat and he taped paper to it got so hot
And I was very not smart.
I was unplugged, though.
Oh, that's good.
And your microphone setup?
Was the internal mic on the camera.
That was it.
It's amazing.
No, professional, this guy.
Really professional.
It's okay.
I improved a long time ago.
What's that?
Oh, the beginning of last season.
How the fuck do I have a mic?
It took you 11 years.
Like, no.
14 i'm sorry for 14 for me to get an editor yeah uh edited them all on my own in that room oh my

like to look at i used to like to look at that room because it was um we drank in there well
yeah we used to drink in there we used to it was fun it was and it's cool to see where he's doing
the rest of his stuff when i'm not working with you right and uh and that room it did have an
energy to it that i think you have left in there uh and i'm gonna miss it yeah so i think whatever
happens next is amazing but i thought it was there's a little bit of retrospective you got
to kind of look back and go holy smokes there's been a lot in this room yeah i'm trying to not
do that oh sorry no no no like when i'm there yeah i can do it with you it's fine but if i'm
in there and i think too hard about it i start going yeah well we're very happy for you you

No, they don't.
There was one scene in Captain America 2
where he throws his shield,
and I was like, oh, that was good use of 3D,
and that was it.
Natalie and I took some edibles
and went and saw james bond the most recent one because there was nothing else to do and this was
i think like right off of the end of omicron so it was like this wasn't recently no it was like
february or something like that and we and we watched it and uh it was pretty good in 3d it was
or at least it felt like it was james bond in 3d yeah it was interesting the car scene where
