Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should download that. TaskRabbit.ca. Code Dangle. Looking to dominate on the ice as much as your team does on it? Maybe not our team.
Starting point is 00:01:18 But other people's teams. Perhaps. Other people's teams are dominating. Good for them. We root for the Toyota Tacoma because its standard I-Force engine boasts an impressive towing capacity of up to 6,400 pounds it is the most powerful Tacoma ever so whether you're hauling gear to the rink or heading
Starting point is 00:01:34 to an away game you can tackle it with ease and there's also the available multi-terrain view monitor which gives you live under floor views to navigate even the toughest terrains like Steve's driveway which can be very dangerous very tough and when it's time to load up the available power lift gate makes loading your gear
Starting point is 00:01:50 in and out a cinch and experience power capability and convenience with the Toyota Tacoma visit toyota.ca or your local Ontario a toyota dealer during red tag days from march through may shop toyota.ca oh yeah you're right it's visit shop toyota.ca i've also done the read thank you thank you steve i appreciate that let's fire this up the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake Let's go!
Starting point is 00:02:23 Let's rub a little salt in the wound. Nick Law scores in his first game with the Colorado Avalanche. Scott Law scores in his first game with the Los Angeles Kings. Nazem Khadri, standing ovation in Denver. Woo. That's a few teams ago, but it still hurts.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Nah, it still hurts. I'm waiting for the McManimal. Hey, why don't you get suspended again? Oh, wow. Hey, you can kiss his bum. Yeah. And maybe if you didn't get suspended, you'd still be here. Jesse, stop being a hater and a doubter.
Starting point is 00:02:56 All right. That man is a Stanley Cup winner. How dare you? Bobby McMahon, Logan Stanley, and Luke Shen were all not in the lineup for their new teams because of visa issues. And it always surprises me when it's not like automatic with these guys. It's like McMahon still takes a couple of days to get his visa work done. It used to be automatic, but changes in policy have made it unautomatic. unautomatic mackenzie wieger had to do the same thing so that is why i was it's always it's always
Starting point is 00:03:26 weird when like the real life things get in the way of these hockey players playing hockey it's like oh your visa is just not done that's something you have to think about yeah you just show up to the rink and play it's got to be frustrating for the players you can only imagine how frustrating it is for fantasy owners yeah i was furious the other night when mackenzie wieger couldn't be dressed up won't somebody think of the fan won't someone think of us um yeah i mean uh i i gotta tell you nick uh nick waugh especially had a very very good game for the colorado avalanche what was amazing is watching drew realizing good time that he's actually a very good player he's so useful and uh i gotta say like western conference hockey like that's a western conference hockey player
Starting point is 00:04:10 it's hard to quantify um but he's so good he's so good for that role he's going to be great for the avalanche i'm so freaking sad man did you guys see the scott lawton post on twitter yes thank you toronto dream come true and you know it was amazing underneath it was all the people going we'll miss you and i'm like what a toxic fan base uh i know i haven't i had to know they all went good riddance we're not going to talk leafs off the start like we there's other things to talk about and then we'll get to the least but i i did want to say i haven't liked a player that much in a long long time like there's something about i get why flyers fans love scott lawton so much i get it completely the guy is he's awesome and he had like you know
Starting point is 00:04:51 an awkward playoff here and then he got injured out of camp so we really got him for what three and a half months uh three and a half months you know as a player like oh oh like in the line in the lineup like he played a little he played obviously in the playoffs last year but it was like a month i didn't even think about it but that he didn't play october until like midway through november right oh my god it was less than six months of him as he actively yeah oh my god everything is so painful justin if you want to throw that up uh lot in there there's his uh twitter post thank you toronto dream come true and it's his son i believe daughter son daughter i'm not sure child child yeah offspring they are watching him do warm-ups oh oh jesse why are you
Starting point is 00:05:39 turning the knife this is agony man by the way this kid's got the daddy 24 jersey on that's so cute i i pointed this out on saturday and and i said it in the lfr and it's i just checked it's still true today like to just prove this team can't do anything right you go to their website okay the there's a red game day ticker it says game day versus flyers march 2nd 2026 because it hasn't updated okay jesse's gonna bring it up because this just turns the knife so much deeper it doesn't come up on the desktop one no it seems like a mobile error you click it on mobile and it brings you to a game day preview of the leafs game against the Flyers in the picture is Scott Lawton, who is no longer on the team.
Starting point is 00:06:32 National Hockey League team. Billions of dollars in value. God help us. Well, who uses a website anymore anyway? What do you use MapleLeafs.com for? What do you actually use it for? You haven't used Maple... I use it all the time.
Starting point is 00:06:46 No, you don't. I do. I use it every LFR. Use MapleLeafs.com. MapleLeafs.com. You don't go to any sort of stat site? i mean mapleleafs.com reroutes me to nhl.com but yeah sometimes they use another i didn't know anybody really used team sites anymore i use my eyes i use the eye test i don't need your
Starting point is 00:07:07 fancy stats you have any interest in uh subscribing to oilers plus no where you get behind the scenes uh videos of like how they make their trades when's that gonna be all the big trades let's let's be honest when's that gonna be oh it won't be us you know no when's that gonna be the leaf oh the leaves are too secretive and important for them oh no go ahead the oilers are accessible just squeeze that blood from the stone go ahead um keep it up yeah so naz got the ovation wah got his first goal with the abs uh and uh later on in the show gary betman likes regional blackouts but we'll get to it um in the meantime i want to talk i want to play a couple of clips from the avalanche and the first one is um uh this is
Starting point is 00:07:50 great gabriel anaskog apparently might have heard his peepee um and i don't know if you've seen jared bednar's press conference on it i have not but all i saw was drew post uh it's pretty funny eggplant emoji and it made me uncomfortable yeah we did it yeah yeah drew posting that's weird yeah the vaporion stuff on stream was worse well jesse are you able to bring that up on the uh the prep sheet here just because it's a uh it's quite the it's quite the interview and jared bednar is a very serious man with great hair underrated how awesome his hair is at that age to have a flow like that sometimes hockey people call hair salad and i think it's stupid jerry bednar's got great salad because but it's it's not salad salad though i feel like should be messier right it's like
Starting point is 00:08:35 curly hair like when my hair is long it's just curly and messy oh how are you whereas whereas bednar's is like smooth and slick that's not true adam you have flow he looks like he should be on the front of a just for men thing no you have flo he has salad so here's i don't know how to describe here's jared with his salad that salad okay all right let's have a play uh just what happened between that and how he's well some lower body injuries not a comfortable one and um that's the time frame that the doctors gave us so so he not a comfortable lower body injury that i would like you know what that's one of those ones where i'm like you know i do want details uh i do want to i don't want to see it but i want to know what happened
Starting point is 00:09:20 don't you want to know i'm good what get out of here you don't want to know i'm trying to figure out how to word the thing that i want to say but i don't think i should okay blake wheeler had an injury a few years ago do you recall it no do you recall well he also got a shot in a similar area and i'm trying to think of how much time he missed yeah i imagine it was similar injury i don't i don't well i don't know i don't know if it's a similar injury because we keep talking about it like third graders he got hit down there well so did bednar uh like we don't actually know what happened i wanted to play this for you because i thought about some of the stuff we heard in
Starting point is 00:10:03 toronto what we've been hearing for the last year and this goes back to when the panthers eliminated the Leafs you know Brady or sorry Matthew Chuck and and Brad Marchand kind of took their victory lap and said the media sucks in Toronto and the fans are too intense and blah blah blah and you know I don't I don't look at Denver as a market that's like easy if you're losing I don't think that you would have a good time and I don't think sharing a locker room with Nathan McKinnon while you're losing yeah I don't think that'd be easy but uh have a look at this interview because this is a depth defenseman okay who is saying this and he's talking about and it's blankenberg he's talking about what it's like to finally be in a winning culture on a winning team and then i want
Starting point is 00:10:46 to make it about the leafs um just a little bit of of this interview jesse you won't have to play the full thing because it's four minutes long 72 hours been like for you getting you know getting the news and joining the team and getting here yeah obviously uh super thankful for my time in Nashville and just really grateful and thankful for the opportunity here and not many chances in your career I feel like you get to get traded to a Stanley Cup number number one place team in the league so I'm super excited to be a part of the group and just trying to soak it in and take it day by day. How much of this team did you know coming into this locker room did you know a lot of the guys what do you know about the team as far as the structure goes and kind of how you're
Starting point is 00:11:26 going to fit in there? Yeah I mean I think coaches have helped me out I'm actually going up here in 20 minutes to go over some systems and um just watching the game last night and um just trying to be a sponge and yeah i mean i knew uh i knew wedgie he was in nashville for a little bit when i was there uh brins um just from the michigan connection and i missed him by a year but um yeah and then mans were just uh close kind of through chapels and in our faith so um yeah nice to have some familiar faces in the locker room and then um yeah just like i said super excited for the opportunity and um to be here okay we can pause it there now he goes on to say i feel like this is something i've prayed for for so long to be able to play in the nhl and even be in a winning
Starting point is 00:12:07 team in a winning culture i'm living in an answered prayer now he's religious but it's a sentiment that i think is really really interesting when it comes to teams like ours uh the ones that we the one that we watch closest because guys i i want to relate it back to what darren drager said last week and and he said something along the lines of players might not want to come here right that paraphrase and we've heard that many many many times and i'm wondering if the call might be coming from inside the house again is it really us the media is it really the fans or is it really that and i and i had a lot of time to think about this over the weekend and this is my thought it's going to take a long time for the toronto maple leafs to get back to winning like if we are
Starting point is 00:12:53 not in a good spot by march next year we know the conversations we're gonna have which are matthews and nylander and how long left yep like that's where we're at yeah right i'm and i'm wondering if it's it's less about it's less about the the the the fact that people care so much in this market and more about the fact that the prospects on the team don't look good like the the future of the team in the near term doesn't look good no but you know it's funny i was thinking last night you know buffalo sabers take control of the atlantic division oh that and that game with that ridiculous game we'll get i know we're gonna get to 15 goals yeah should we talk about it yeah uh and god knows how many fights um they fired their gm and immediately got better without
Starting point is 00:13:46 having to make any roster moves should we take any lessons from that no let's just keep ah you know what all all this stuff about apparently cj was like i really don't know if they're getting rid of tree uh the berube stuff like listen the rest of the season i was just talking to someone and they're like listen it sucks for you and like anyone who's going to watch all the rest of the games um but like this is probably what's good for them and they're probably right like the way they're playing right now um is not no one's this bad is the point that i was trying to get across in lfr they are minus 18 for goal differential in their last seven games over the course of an NHL season that is roughly if I remember correctly minus 211 cool the worst team in the NHL I believe
Starting point is 00:14:47 is the Canucks at negative 71 so the Leafs right now are trending three times worse than a team that is currently in last place by nine points no one's this bad so i put my faith in chaos and what i mean by that is uh is it easy to envision the leafs being good next year no no it's not no but i have faith in the chaos of the nhl look at the standings man look at the standings this year compared to last look at some of the teams who really didn't do a whole hell of a lot and have completely turned their fortunes around a lot of them in the atlantic division that's what i have my faith in because it's not anything the leafs are actually doing is that bleak yeah but i think it's actually glass half full okay i do i do like it'd be easier
Starting point is 00:15:56 but a lot more boring and depressing to just be like yeah they're gonna be shit they're gonna be shit forever i just don't think the nhl works like that you know the the sabers are the exception not the rule and now here they are they skipped all the steps they you're supposed to squeak in first and then like sort of contend and then eventually make it year three yeah four maybe no they're just they might win the conference for god's sake it's crazy sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they
Starting point is 00:16:42 never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app
Starting point is 00:17:23 using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle jesse you were at the game on saturday yeah first up i think we at some point i want you to queue up that picture but um what was the vibe from the fans or the players how did it well let's start with the fans how did it feel in the stadium it was definitely quiet a lot more quiet than usual um i was looking at beforehand on like saturday afternoon ish just to see ticket prices and they are going for lower than i've seen in a long time probably the same amount like when the jays were in the world series and nobody wanted
Starting point is 00:18:15 to show up to leafs games you know it's probably the same price as the fall there but if you've ever wanted to go to a leaf game like now's your opportunity because you're getting in for like 110 bucks if you don't mind sitting in the in the 300s in the top there this is the picture you're referring to um if you look there if you're watching you'll see a lot of empty seats here in the lower bowl and this is during play in the first period it's about i want to say it's before the first goal is scored still zero zero but it's not like this is right at the beginning where people are still funneling in people should have been in their seats at this time and there's a lot of empty seats and you could tell by the atmosphere that there's a lot of apathy for this team right
Starting point is 00:18:56 now you can tell by the noise of of when things happen on the ice that people are just kind of playing out the string here it's it's not a good vibe in terms of the the fan base engagement right now i think a lot of people are ready to move on and and get next season started there's 18 more games well and the thing is is it's a bad product right like it's not a fun one i told you guys about i was at the philadelphia leafs game uh you know last monday and that you know again the guy sitting next to me who was my buddy was like hey that after the first period he's like that was a grind like that was like can you imagine going to a hockey game and not being electrified like that oh i know it's and and so i bet it's awesome for road fans oh listen if you want to dunk on the
Starting point is 00:19:44 least man this is your time this is your super bowl i i want to ask this question because i i put it out and i i said this against ottawa and i say it again against tampa how can you have two saturdays in a row where you have two division rivals coming to your barn wreck your shit absolutely wreck your shit and the coach hangs on and people are like no no no i want them to lose i want them to lose i don't want a coach bump and while i understand that don't you want to know if austin matthews is anything more than an elite defensive center don't you want to know Jacob Quillen can play more than eight minutes a night I'm more frustrated by the young guys I'm not like Willie's gonna be fine I think I want to know what Austin looks like in any other system
Starting point is 00:20:30 I think you need to know now I think you need because if he doesn't then you got a bigger question what if this is what he is I just don't think the question needs to be answered now well then then you're waiting till next season and then people like you are freaking out because how did you not know right but what i would say is you're trading him at just dog shit i'm not saying trade him i'm saying know what you have is he the 70 goal guy or is he a 40 goal guy is he able to take over games or is he not in a different system that you react differently he scored at a 50 plus goal pace for a very long time and goal scoring around the league if i'm not mistaken is going up i think it's the way he's being used you know there's well what if you
Starting point is 00:21:17 could know what if you could know i don't know if you can know with uh less than a month's worth of hockey under derrick lalonde you don't think a different system knowing having a several week snapshot i mean they took the the week and a half out of the olympics to decide the entire direction of their season right but that was stupid though but at least this is a six-week snapshot yeah i i just so you want berube to stay and just continue to pound these guys into dust so here's what it is uh on my way in uh someone was like don't you get the impression they're doing this on purpose at this point and my answer was i hope so otherwise they're this bad all by accident uh-oh that wouldn't be good at all i mean listen the good news is uh the flames gave
Starting point is 00:22:08 the the game away the the calgary flames ruin it for everyone and i'm sure gary betman's pissed about that did you see that clip no what was that they scored a goal and then the camera was on their management box and they were all upset oh that yes yes i did see that like they know what they know what they want now there's no confirmation that that's how i didn't watch the game but that they're talking about on the cj show and they're like that could have been could have been an edit allowed the first goal of the game because they allowed a goal in like a first minute of the game and they were smiling though no they were upset no but they were like it was sort of like oh but like smiling yeah but like unless you're watching the broadcaster know how
Starting point is 00:22:45 they made that edit then you don't we don't know it's very easy to edit that yeah okay or it's just you they can just take that clip and air that at that point well then take the flames out of it mike babcock who is just not all that clever when it comes to social cues it was like well we tried to finish last place when he was talking about the year with a uh here let me just check it oh finish last place right so sure i think it's i think it's their goal now they're really i don't know if there is a point to firing greg uh greg craig berube um before the end of the season i'm not sure like unless he does the tortorella thing that happened last year where he's basically like i don't enjoy my job uh publicly which was crazy um but like he can't come back
Starting point is 00:23:34 he can't come back next year and i don't know how many more times i can say in plain english it doesn't mean he's a bad coach it just means he's not the right fit for this team yeah so many people are like how can you sit oh i shouldn't have to do this every time we talk about him we'll put it this way nick watt uh drew was not excited about getting nick waugh until he saw him play for the apps yeah right uh no wonder you couldn't get shit for your players they look like shit i do want to say like craig berube does have a problem with bottom six players um they paid the sun and the moon for scott lawton who's a player he had he played him they got him to be a center played him on the wing um and then played him in the bottom six all season even when the team was
Starting point is 00:24:25 dog shit never gave him a sniff of the top six which he's capable of playing in if you're gonna play him on the wing it might as well be there uh connor doer has been a great penguin pretty much from the moment he arrived as a bottom six guy he had a goal in like 55 games as a leaf but then you go back to his time in minnesota and he had 10 goals why don't you know how to use these players so steve i'm a little confused because you're saying brubake isn't going to come back next year can't come back next year can't but you're you do you want him to be the coach for the rest of the season or you think that's what they're going to do i think that's gonna i think that's you think it's gonna be good that he coaches the next month and a half oh absolutely not
Starting point is 00:25:11 uh the the reason he's saying to me the only logical reason Craig Berube is still a coach is they want to lose games okay and I'm like zero humor in what I'm saying I mean that shit do you think they should keep him as the coach for the rest of the season yeah if their goal is to lose as many games as possible yes um like I mean Jesus in 2026 if you don't know what you have with austin matthews uh i don't think they do well how please resign no how could they should all resign it's awesome that's what i'm asking them to do is i'm asking berube to not steve do you know what they have with austin matthews you don't know you don't know i i i think adam's like making a point in that you will you want to see what you
Starting point is 00:26:00 have yes so what i'm saying is we don't have enough time to accomplish what adam wants to accomplish 20 games or not 18 games is that's 25 of the season 18 hog shit games with derrick lalonde it's still a pretty good who is not a good head coach i understand that so but so but just say but then you could also accomplish your goal then of losing the games so derrick lalonde yeah so if your goal is to lose the games and derrick lalonde you're saying is hog shit and those games will be hog shit then you're going to accomplish that plus you get the you get the look of the team under somebody new Craig Berube would accomplish the losing the games but it would be the same thing you've seen for the last five months like immediately Domi's back at center
Starting point is 00:26:45 what do we know at least with Adam's solution you'd have an upside in that you'd lose plus you'd see something different I do worry that you get fooled by a potential new coach bump which what it defined the Leafs season that they were completely fooled by the bump that they got after They're firing Mark Savard, and it's what put them behind the eight ball, and it's why they got so little for McMahon and why they got so little for Lawton. But then maybe they weren't bad. That's a different conversation in saying that Brad Treliving is incompetent because you wouldn't be fooled by it.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Oh, I want him fired also. If you saw the Leafs win 10 of the last 10 games, I don't know, if they won a 10-game winning streak to finish the season, they still missed the playoffs and all that. You wouldn't be confused by the roster. You would be like, oh, this is an anomaly. Who cares? it's garbage time i but no okay you know how many let me finish okay you're saying you wouldn't be
Starting point is 00:27:42 fooled by that but you think brad sure living would be absolutely so you're saying like he's more incompetent than than what you're seeing on the ice correct so then he should also be let go yes yeah so i feel like either way we're getting to the same answer so why not take the one that has upside in that you'd have lalonde in there to show at least what the team is and also why why listen nobody wants i am not a derrick lalonde fan at all i know i was highly critical of his coaching in detroit and i was right to be he was awful not everyone he was a great assistant in tampa though and here's what i'd say hey derrick you're the interim coach you're not going to be the head coach right you're gonna be the interim coach 18 games can you give austin some offensive
Starting point is 00:28:29 zone starts please like that's that's literally the marching orders can you get more out all i need is a coach who can get more not everything more out of the star players so we know hey what this is what's happening and then uh and then hey well uh can hey can we make morgan riley look slightly better so we might be able to trade him this summer can we leafs didn't even approach him said uh dreger yeah yeah because they're they're i mean what do you want me to say they're incompetent i know they're watching the same games i'm watching i know how morgan riley looks the entire market knows how morgan riley looks here's what it comes down to um the management and this should answer why i'm being so wishy-washy about this the management's
Starting point is 00:29:16 whole gig is to evaluate the talent of this team they're wretched talent evaluators no idea what they're doing so I am not comfortable with exercises in talent evaluation like firing Craig Berube and throwing Derek Lalonde in there I'm not comfortable in exercises in talent evaluation with this current management group because they're so bad at it i would sooner set the rest of the season on fire than watch them fumble through another non-decision okay well what about this the easiest thing in talent of talent evaluation is to pick out the good players they can't do that no no but they can i i think i think what evidence is there i think brad true living came to toronto knowing that austin matthews is good at hockey that my point
Starting point is 00:30:07 is can we see a lift can we see something where the star players at least start to look a little bit more like themselves because i need to see a sign of life that's the more if you're going into next season who cares who the general manager is and you don't know what this guy is anymore if you don't know if he is what he is now then he's not worth 13 million dollars anymore guys that's the point i'm trying to make here but i think we need to have we need to have a we need to have some sort of look at what's he look like in any other system he you did you saw that in December because they changed things up a bit and he was shit hot he was unbelievable and Willie Willie's been shit hot since the difference is the way Berube uses those two players
Starting point is 00:30:51 Nylander he just I mean offensive I telling William Nylander to do anything like he'll just he'll he'll do his thing and he'll do it well enough that you're like all right better to have him on my team than not whereas austin he's still using like he's david kampf right i saw enough in the sullivan run uh that i'm like oh he's still in there he just doesn't get this opportunity under craig brube at all right like we saw him at the olympics as well like this player can shoot this player can bang him in in front of the net this player can set up his teammates this player is a solid two-way player we know that um he skates well like there were times last season i think there's a big difference between matthew struggles this year and last there were times
Starting point is 00:31:42 last season where i was like oh i don't know if that guy's there anymore oh shit i don't know like he's not moving like austin he i'm i was scared there were times earlier this season i was scared but i just don't think the puck's going in and also i think his team is shitty right nine goal nine games without a goal is wild and completely unacceptable for someone who makes the money that he does but 24 games without a power play goal or that's unbelievable isn't that what it is 24 that's unbelievable but that player is there the team isn't i i think that player is there um they're not making any decisions that put any of their players in a position to succeed so why not start now derek lalon for 18 garbage times games is the solution it's not the solution
Starting point is 00:32:37 no but it's the next the best we can do right now what are you gonna do gag me with a spoon well but steve what else you got what else you got you're you're what else you got is there what else you got is tanking which they're doing very well they are they're sinking like a rock but i don't know that they can tank enough to catch to catch the top five like i that's a pretty low jersey's winning some games which is beautiful let's hope jake sanderson's healthy yes i'm hoping that for fantasy go sends go am i right um friggin who else st louis won yesterday let's go I don't know Toronto's 24th
Starting point is 00:33:15 man 24th but how close are they to 25th well it's hilarious because the Kings and the Preds who are in the playoff race are a point behind them which is absolutely not the Leafs are better than the Kings
Starting point is 00:33:31 yeah and who they traded a player to with a conditional pick with the condition being if they make the playoffs yeah yeah and their records in the last 10 games were about the same three five and two for toronto three six and one for la that's so funny how can't you think the leafs are so funny i'm not just like a full two feet aboard all the the tank army uh tanks that are going out because i don't think it's a good idea to not protect yourself against giving boston or philly an
Starting point is 00:34:04 unprotected first in the future year seeing how management has handled this season if mlse god forbid decides to bring back bradshaw living and there's a situation where next year there's no justification for it and there's a situation next year where they are as terrible as they are this year look what's happened to the new york rangers after going to conference finals and then having two disaster seasons and that pick is unprotected to one of these teams that's why i'm not like go chase a top five pick like they pick fifth overall that doesn't really that doesn't help them too much next year like you're gonna get a good player who knows what that player is gonna be if they can step into your lineup it doesn't help them too much next year but it just keeps
Starting point is 00:34:45 the pick away from boston which at this point is the i i think that's it no but then boston gets boston then gets 2028 actually even worse give it keeps no it keeps the pick with boston steve it doesn't giving you all see how frigging bleak this is we do that's why we're that's why we're saying we're trying to game this out right no but i'm trying to talk it through like listen what i'm not gonna do for the next month is just sit here and talk about how much life sucks you know like i'm not just gonna sit here and be like god damn it everything is so awful so i'm trying i'm really you see me fighting it okay really trying to be like here's a positive way of looking at things they might have the bleakest situation in the league sure and i don't
Starting point is 00:35:37 see it wouldn't it be great to see austin matthews go on a 10 game goal streak and go ah all right well there he is derrick lalonde is how that happens i'm i'm sure that austin has has dealt with worse boy i just don't i like look at here's here's what got it for me uh jess i think you saw this too um uh when on the weekend brube was like yelling at them or was that new york when he was yelling at them one of the and they all just turned their backs on him yeah when the picture of Domi turning away from Berube. Yeah, that was last week. That wasn't this week. Yeah. And anyways, I think
Starting point is 00:36:13 like you should hand over the pick to Boston this year because that gets you a first round pick. But you're not capable of winning the games necessary. No, but you might just fall. The lottery balls might fall your way where it's top five like that. Others were 22nd last year.
Starting point is 00:36:29 So it's very out of the Leafs control right now, like where that pick is going to land is just out of the Leafs control Like they can, they can lose a bunch of games. They can win a bunch of games. They're going to fall in this range here where it's up to the lottery balls. So I'm rooting for one or the other, and I'm going to root for that pick being outside of the top five so that the Leafs get a first round pick in the next two seasons. That's what, that's how I'm looking at that pick as opposed to, yeah, go get a top four or five pick and you get fourth overall.
Starting point is 00:37:01 And then you have a less pick in the future when you might be bad. right because this organization hasn't proven that they know how to run a hockey team and then imagine this situation where the leafs also have an unprotected first going to boston or philly that's darker to me and the next two seasons right yeah yeah like i'd rather i'd rather boston have it now and at least have the 2028 first and that's when the matthews deals up what if they're good and then you get to utilize that yeah if you suck right and if you suck right now and get that pick that's not even an asset you have in the future because you've got to give it away like so that's how i'm adding a rookie keaton verhoff or gavin mckenna to this team
Starting point is 00:37:42 might give them a boost and maybe they're matthew schaefer or jack eichel or conor mcdavid or austin matthew step into the league what if they're not yeah well then you're like that it's like well now we don't have a pick for two more years and i totally understand fans too who are rooting strictly for number one overall and they're like i want mckenna that's what i'm looking for the for this team because a player like Celebrini a player like Schaefer they've been transformational to their organization that they've joined you can root for that too I'm rooting for something different if you want to go down that lane I get it because yeah at number one you could get something transformational but the odds of getting number one are slim not great because Calgary and
Starting point is 00:38:23 Vancouver are going to have the best odds to do that so I don't know how realistic that goal is but you never know the lottery balls could fall your way yeah yeah i don't i i guess i think i think you also need to find a way to talk about this without being like the sun is going to i i know that i'm trying i'm trying but that also jesse requires too much blind faith and imagination for me and uh i'm struggling with it and i agree i agree with you fully but for me it's requiring a little bit more improv than i'm used to because they are fucked and the sun is exploding and i'm gonna try to be like well you won't need to microwave or cook anything because everything's gonna get charred i think to ash i think i think you know
Starting point is 00:39:18 when when you know five six years ago when whenever brian burke got on the fan and said uh yeah austin matthews he's gonna leave uh and he's gonna go to uh arizona and everybody freaked out they're like well brian must know something brian didn't know fucking anything he was just shooting off and i would say that to brian burke right now as intimidating as the man he'd be like and respecting it respected as the man is i'd be like you were just you were getting a soundbite and and and you you fed the wolves and and you know good for you now i think it's a legitimate conversation where they don't start well next year that's all we're talking about him and willie because and i don't think that willie doesn't want to be here i actually think willie would just spend his whole
Starting point is 00:39:56 career here win or lose but austin wants to win badly and that's what he wants most of all that's all we hear from his camp just put me in a position to win and i think the interesting conversation so steve doesn't uh just look blindly into the sun so that you don't have to watch hockey anymore because you got blinded by the sun um i think an interesting way to have that conversation is okay what steps should the leafs take so that austin matthews remains here so that he's in a winning situation the way i'm looking at the team is you relieve the head coach early you relieve the gm early so that you gotta jump start on the offseason so it's not last time when you fired the gm and you had to go quickly hire the guy out of calgary and bring him in yeah i
Starting point is 00:40:41 would do those things and then the next guy you look at the roster and you say what parts of the roster do you want to keep what parts do you want to get rid of and you go forward that way and you talk to you talk to your captain and you go what worked what happened if you get into the minutia of austin matthews and his play style i don't think they have found a solution for him on the wing i don't think domi can be what mitch marner was i don't think matthew nyes is the best play style next to him so that's probably where i start but the best player on my team go get him a couple wings that will elevate his game back to where it was and i think that's the first task of the new gm rebuild the blue line they are old and slow and chris tanev was the glue that held everything
Starting point is 00:41:28 together and chris tanev is old and busted and may never play hockey again that's unacceptable new gm go fix that and then there's a bunch of young talent you can either move out for pieces that'll help you now or keep and see what they do i don't know i i don't i don't think everything's just oh you gotta you gotta sit and be sorry about this team for the direction but you're my optimism is like i love the plan you just outlined and i don't think that plan has occurred to the current group once yeah i i think that that's what i'm to defend steve for a sec to defend you let me defend you because i think you don't think you don't think that thought has ever crossed bradshaw living's mind like hey i need to make this team better by moving things
Starting point is 00:42:17 this is the thing jesse at the core of this discussion we agree wholeheartedly i just i don't so that my depression is in the idea that they wouldn't move off of this management group because that is a hundred percent where the nhl is going like yeah you know yeah there's a there's of violence and a tenacity to it but it's rooted in youth speed speed the whole new the everything in the nhl now is speed and skill it's tough speed or tenacious speed or whatever you want to call it it's brandon hagel you know what i mean um it's not that he's the youngest guy anymore he's also not old it's a play style like i mean dude half the guys in the lightning i was about to just name them no i think like if you look at this season you say what's the most valuable thing
Starting point is 00:43:11 that's developed out of the leafs it's bobby mcmahon who's grown into a game that's based on being fast and getting into shit and being big like that's that's what's excelling and and the leafs need more of that so like let me let me let me say this oh sorry no no i know the brad living thing is very interesting because if you have no faith that keith pelly will fire brad living then that's very dark let me the flames sorry just to put a bow on it don't put a bow on it i don't want you to put a bow on it because i want to come at you i come after you and help you with something bradger living left the flames old as shit yep and if he gets fired and traded their best player yes if he gets fired he's going to leave the leafs old as shit his mo is old as
Starting point is 00:43:57 shit so his whole brand is the polar opposite of the direction they should be going which is why to me that's the what are we waiting for that's the one you don't need to waste time on why does brad still have a job why on earth that i meant that shit i absolutely meant that shit on deadline day where the lawden return came down and we found out no one else was traded i was like i'd fire him today in uh today james myrtle said on leaf report this morning in talking to other teams this week and they felt dealing with toronto was frustrating due to where have you heard this before that's right here on the steve dangle podcast how long it was taking and their indecision what did i tell you about the mo about from the beginning i said he's an indecisive or or has the reputation of
Starting point is 00:44:47 being indecisive you can call us any nasty name you want we're not wrong but i want to i want to defend steve for a sec jesse because here's where our our genius plan let's say we're the two geniuses that are crafting this plan we're going to implant this into brad's mind you got to fire the coach so that we could get a look at the star players and and just have the looks at least at least be watchable okay well how it works in a corporate setting is you go you see he was the problem i'm still good no no and that's brad too yeah so that's the thing is that brad would need to still go in this yeah yeah no i think brandon pridham should be interim gm and the least need to get a jump start on looking for a new general manager because that's something they haven't done
Starting point is 00:45:27 in what a decade and a half and interview people yeah take a interview to do that long slow process of where you interview a whole bunch of people maybe even outside of hockey in different industries whatever interview dozens hundreds of people you have so much money rogers go look for the right guy and they need to start that process now you know so that this new person who comes in has all of june to evaluate and make their decisions come draft time it's just if you don't think mlse is smart enough to do something like that then that's a pretty bleak outlook that's the root of it all and so you don't like keith pelly because he's not making any and he's running too many teams and he's only been terrible at his job and he's bad at this
Starting point is 00:46:13 objectively i agree it doesn't look good on him if keith was a smart executive he'd put someone between him and the hockey so he doesn't look bad if he was a smart executive he would have never taken the job it's it's an unwinnable it's an unwinnable job get the money unwinnable game making like five six million bucks it's a completely unwinnable gig also he's a grifter then yeah that's what they all are what do you think this is fair enough these guys all fail upwards are you kidding me you know what i will say you know one thing i learned from uh you get to at a c-suite level buddy you just keep you just keep shifting positions every five years adam so you've read rogers versus yeah yeah so and this book keeps coming up and leaf fans if she's coming
Starting point is 00:46:56 up because you keep bringing it up it's a free skill it keeps coming up because there's a lot of valid things in it leaf fans like it's important to know what you're if you want to learn more about your team and you're bored this summer and you want to read the craziest book just you put also bone dry yeah crazy it's the craziest bone dry book ever sorry i i love that shit so maybe that's just my shit adam i want your opinion on this give it to me ed rogers is an enormous mark he's a mark he's defined that mark um he's a billionaire and epo baby who has had so many people latch on to him and just look at him and go that's my meal ticket and just leech money off him and dressed it up as success he's like henry in industry like i've never seen industry anybody
Starting point is 00:47:55 watches industry we'll get that like justin's nodding there's two major telecoms in this country then there's a company like telus which is a major still a major telecom yeah not quite at that level like medium yeah medium and then there's bell and rogers which are both like quadruple xl to their medium like yeah of course the number keeps going up but all i the the main impression i got from that book is this guy's a mark and a guy like keith pelly who's done work with both companies uh identified that mark and has made millions of dollars off that mark i don't i don't get that impression um my impression is different my impression is yes billionaire yes i mean very few billionaires aren't nepo babies that's an important thing to remind yourself like
Starting point is 00:48:50 there are you know we know mark zuckerberg and elon musk whatever that's the tech boom most billionaires are old money because it takes a while right uh so i don't necessarily be like i don't think that that's completely out of the you know that's not out of the norm i don't know if he's like unique in this space i think but it is the truth i think the impression i got is that this is a guy whose father was an animal yes and objectively would uh was a an unbelievable businessman and also took incredible risks that would make most of us, we would land in a mental hospital, right? In terms of what he was able to do with that business in the early days. The first part of the book is extremely stressful because it's mostly about Ted, his dad.
Starting point is 00:49:35 So when you grow up, especially as a son in the shadow of a business empire like that, you want to have something that you can see. What are you going to do? Not work at Rogers? like you're gonna work at rogers right so you want to have something to to to put your flag in the earth and i think i think um we're looking at a situation here where this is a guy who thinks hey one of the things i can do i can be a great manager of or owner of sports teams and bring a bunch of championships to toronto which i believe is their goal and i see that with the blue jays as frustrating as the blue jays are and you know we have a little bit of a halo effect because they just went to game seven of the world series sure but let's talk that's his team where were we where
Starting point is 00:50:18 were we a year ago right they people were ready to pull their hair out with this management group right so i think here's what i think is going to happen keith pelly needs to perform because eventually the blue jays in some way shape or form are going to join mlse and it's going to be its own corporation and the question will be who's running it is it keith or is it mark so keith's quite motivated right now mark shapiro is what i mean keith is quite motivated right now to keep that job and needs to show that he's doing a good job. So I think if there's anything that you probably can take away from this is that Keith has got to get this right. I don't know if he is the right guy to do it, but I do know that he's motivated. If you think that he's sitting
Starting point is 00:50:59 back in an office, not worried about this, I guarantee you he's worried about this. This is an enormous. As someone who was raised by an Italian woman, it is not hard to sit and worry about things what are you doing about it and that's the stuff we can't see right now i don't know but my point well all i can see so far is nothing well and he's been on the job for quite some time now yeah he didn't just get here yeah oh i mean he would he would argue well i we dropped shanny and we made this we did that it was time for shannon dropped shanny a year ago keith he did a year a year before right well we are you know what like uh you know fans are emotional fans are irrational and there's enough evidence that on this show at very least when it comes to
Starting point is 00:51:44 the leafs we're usually early but rarely wrong like usually the time to fire someone or trade someone or or whatever usually those two things was roughly around when we said it should be yep yep it's so rarely we go back and go you know what that guy actually did know what he was doing that was you know people doing that with dubas right now i'm like guys he had great qualities he would have had steered them in a better direction but he wasn't perfect people are also forgetting the nuance of the dubas conversation from 2023 yeah yeah and we don't need to get into it but my point is like okay so all that said uh i think they should i think they should fire baruba and i think they should do it right now uh i think every day with him is lost
Starting point is 00:52:33 time to find out what austin matthews is now uh i'd love to know what john tavaris is now without this coach i'd love to know what jacob quillen could be he's now at center ice at practice which is good wow third line center his dome he's moved up to the wing calling a player up and playing him where he plays cowan and quillen will play together so berube will have an excuse not to play them that much um this is my point you don't fucking this is where you don't do this we got tired of spending all that money on razors to be honest yes it's sort of an outrageous expense when you go to the store and you're like what is this it is yeah for a little floppy piece of plastic you know that yes toss in the little bin in your in your bathroom absolutely yeah
Starting point is 00:53:13 thirty dollars for eight refills sometimes more it's outrageous i just flush mine no you don't no i don't have a plumber on standby it goes down there listen when you shave with harry's plus it's clean and it's cost effective and that's the beautiful thing because harry's has been uh it's their most advanced razor ever this is harry's plus and it was built in a factory in germany they do not outsource there are no middlemen they build it themselves and it's built of steel and it feels substantial in your hand it's not that plastic that jesse's talking about right now they built this like they were developing an f1 car yeah like the the aerodynamics on a harry's razor is unbelievable and imagine the
Starting point is 00:53:56 kind of looks maxing you'll get to do on your chin you know that'll you speaking of aerodynamics how about that chin of yours put that hammer down yeah and just use a harry's razor that's right for a limited time uh our listeners get a harry's plus trial set for only 10 bucks harrys.com slash sdp this set includes the all-new harry's plus razor one refined five blade cartridge a two ounce foaming shave gel and a travel cover to protect your blades on the go. Just go to Harry's dot com slash SDP to claim the offer. And after your purchase, they're going to ask you where you heard about them. Please support our show and say it was us that sent you the game had 15 goals, seven
Starting point is 00:54:36 fights, 28 penalties for one hundred and two penalty minutes, and 70 of those penalty minutes came in the first period. And we have a new king of the Atlantic. ladies and gentlemen unbelievable your blue detroit red wings are the leaders of the atlantic division go sabers unbelievable could you have ever called this going into this season no no and like it it says something about how great of a story this is like i grew up hating the sabers they beat my team in the playoffs which means i don't like you dominic hasik games were awful to watch as an opponent um and i'm so genuinely happy for the team and for all the players and for all
Starting point is 00:55:20 the fans yeah like the the bedlam in the building that night and all the footage that i've seen since of like fans in the concourse pouring out of the place after probably the best hockey game they've ever seen in their entire lives it was an eight seven win with like what was it seven fights uh yeah seven fights for first place in the division as regular season games go that's about as good as you can get you can't really do much better no it probably took four hours but like that's just absolutely incredible and i think if you're cheering against the buffalo sabers you might be the villain yeah you might be you can you just imagine a world where the Tampa Bay Lightning are unseated by them
Starting point is 00:56:08 and they got to play Detroit rather than play like Tampa Detroit would be interesting because that'd be the Iserman Bowl. Yes, it would be. But the Sabres are they've got the not only are they extremely talented, which was the thing at the beginning of the season, like they're so talented they can't put it together. They're so talented. They can't put it
Starting point is 00:56:24 together. They've put it together. They're extremely talented. They just got bigger. And now I'm watching a team and I'm like, yeah, but you also have that magic fairy dust. You got that Vegas Golden Knights 2017 about you yes because that was not a good team they weren't i'm sorry that's a stanley cup finalist team i know how could you say they're like on paper no yeah and marc-andre flurry was
Starting point is 00:56:47 just uh he uh oh i need to become a deity so i will simply do that like he just had that ability and it was crazy they got goaltending and scored goals even though they got outplayed on a lot of nights and oh wait a sec that wait is that a winning recipe it can be um one of these days we're gonna get the full story about like because people say this as a joke but it is legitimately true this is kevin adams team yes for the for he may most part he may work again this is kevin adams yeah but they got good the moment he was fired now i know that win streak began before he was fired but he was gone but remember they hadn't quite announced it yet but it was known internally yeah because keck lineman was overseas and yes yeah bring him in what on earth changed
Starting point is 00:57:49 in terms of day-to-day operations between kevin adams getting fired and yarmo taking on that job you can't tell me it's nothing this is why i think they should fire berube because sometimes it's just a change of personality man maybe well the lesson i take from it is the gm you should fire the gm no matter how good or bad of a roster he's assembled you ought to fire the gm uh if the team is losing right what about the new gm bump because apparently that is violently a thing in buffalo i gotta know i gotta friggin know because it's a magic they have not stopped riding jesse yes when you watch the buffalo sabers what is it for you i i'd like to talk about the game yesterday in particular about watching the buffalo sabers
Starting point is 00:58:45 because i think it's easy to take that kevin adams storyline and run with it but it's time to recognize what the sabers are doing night to night and get down to the nitty gritty with them each and every game because this sabers win that happened yesterday it doesn't happen in a vacuum the reason that game was so contentious is because last weekend the sabers beat up on the lightning six to two and that game got out of hand because the lightning are the biggest piss babies in the world and when things go bad they like to just try to muck it up yeah we're losing fight us because we can't win anymore so you got to fight us and that's what they tried to do and that six two lost to the sabers and the sabers weren't really having it and they got their little
Starting point is 00:59:36 scuffles and then go ahead well no because that's that's the most important part the sabers have been so bulliable for when was the last time the Sabres made the playoffs like what was the year uh is it 14 years ago 14 years ago okay so coincidentally 14 years ago the Boston Bruins fresh off of winning a Stanley Cup in 2011 Milan Lucic goes for a loose puck in the Sabres end and he runs ryan miller over like a freight train and nothing is done about it and they got humiliated because no one stood up for ryan miller and ryan miller was upset about it and so the next time they play they fed poor paul gostad to milan lucic who like if you're not of a certain age you don't understand how much of a monster prime milan lucic was he was scary
Starting point is 01:00:37 he was a top 10 heavyweight in the league maybe top five maybe top one and could give you 30 goals yep and was diabolical right but that moment kind of underratedly defined the next decade plus of the buffalo sabers not only were you bad you were soft bad right and the lightning while usually on the receiving end of beating from beatings from the panthers they've learned a thing or two about that game and if you are a team that's had any kind of playoff success ever you know that this is a huge part of winning hockey it's a huge part of winning hockey in the playoffs is mucking it up in the shit so brandon hagel of all guys he's not a huge guy at all going at rasmus doline who has been a guy who the sabers have left vulnerable for years and
Starting point is 01:01:42 years and years that's the punk test right there that's the lightning going you know what we can't really beat you at this whole hockey thing at least we haven't been lately we're just gonna try to kick your ass and this was the first time in over a decade the sabers have defended themselves adequately and look at that they won like i can't help but come out of that uh come out of watching that game uh feeling different about their prospects heading into the playoff oh no because they're not afraid of you uh of you beck malenstein who told 40 year old cory perry to fight he's cory perry he's gonna do something no your whole thing you don't get the nickname the worm because you fight guys you get the nickname because you don't you do all
Starting point is 01:02:37 kinds of shit and you don't fight them they got you to be a rat who chips in the occasional goal you're not i don't know who told you it was a good idea to fight as a 40 year old that's fair beck malenstein beat the brakes off that man beat the brakes off that so do we have a new king of the atlantic for the next three to four years up there with like you know they'll have to fight off montreal and detroit well yeah you know i think the world of the habs and what they're doing uh detroit is also obviously a real player in there they have a couple injuries right now that makes things difficult is this the is this the last gasp of the lightning empire or is this uh or is this just hey it's a it's somebody else is battling the lightning now
Starting point is 01:03:25 because it was the it was bruins and it was leafs and then it was panthers and now it's now lighting are like i still got it this is life on the serengeti this is the the young lion yeah fighting the old one to take over the pride and uh because that's the only path to taking over the pride is that way um and yeah it's absolutely the sabers for the taking who else is going to challenge them because really it's three ish young bucks that are really serious in the atlantic and the lightning and then you got boston who's hanging on right that's how i sort of look at this it's in the sabers right now are the most impressive young team it's it's gonna be fun to watch all the way to the end now i wanted to kind of go through this
Starting point is 01:04:17 because it's kind of fun to start to talk about this stuff if the playoffs started today can i talk about the game oh yeah no yeah i wasn't gonna go away from the game but yeah go ahead okay sorry no you can go ahead if it was because brandon hagel got fine all i was going to say is that that the sabers would be playing the bruins and i think that's funny uh just because the bruins have a little bit of that old but go ahead jess what did you want to say on the game uh because yeah it started with um they didn't start with the hagel dalene thing because it starts earlier when they go after tage thompson and it's hagel and sorelli who check him from behind into the boards and then that starts the initial line brawl and also like rogers get your stuff together
Starting point is 01:04:58 about like games you're airing at they're airing the anaheim st louis game on on table okay you gotta you gotta air so you gotta air some other games too and then then the edmonton game was blocked that was ridiculous so like shout out all the illegal streams out there um the the so they they check tage thompson and back to what you're saying like everybody jumps in to defend tage thompson and then that's where the first fight happens with doline and uh who beats his ass um somebody beats him up on tampa there were too many fights and then hegel which he gets fine for i think that's where where we start the the visuals of what hegel's doing there in the game because you have Darlene checking him out in front.
Starting point is 01:05:44 And Justin, you can pull this up. And then we get to something that I think deserves a suspension. And now we know it only got a fine. But they're tussling in front after he cross-checks him. They're together. They're like doing their little thing. Okay. They know their sticks are dropped.
Starting point is 01:06:00 They're going to get into this. And then Hegel decides to, when Darlene's turned around, jump him from behind, glove him down, and start wailing on the back of his head yeah that's true yeah like even lukin and rushes out it's trash garbage nonsense and it leads to the uh second line brawl of the game there five thousand dollar fine that's worth it every day every single yeah you do that every time every time every day like again i'm not gonna sit here and defend him because like i understand why Evgeny Malkin got five games I'm not sure there's five games worth of difference between these two
Starting point is 01:06:42 things this is like context matters this is very clearly an Atlantic division heavyweight trying to do damage physical like illegal damage to another Atlantic heavyweight the reason you do this is to make the buffalo sabers easier to beat tonight and going forward and i don't know like who's not paying that five thousand dollar fine oh yeah this is a hundred percent worth it if you're hagel did hagel not get suspended in last year's playoffs i don't remember so i'm i think he was for the hit on um who'd he hit parkoff if you've been suspended in the past calendar year which i believe brandon hagel has you shouldn't be eligible for fines you were suspended and you didn't learn your lesson you should be suspended for at least as long as you were suspended the
Starting point is 01:07:43 first yeah i think i don't know how you look at this situation in a game that's out of control and they're throwing around majors and misconducts all to anybody who gets in anything and you can see that this is just retribution we're trying to take a piece of flesh here we're losing to nothing at this time that's a suspension it's intent to injure yes at the very bottom of what you can define this it's intent to injure if you want to go higher in what he's trying to do to in reality and like knock him out with a concussion and how dirty all of this is like at the very least it's a really dirty play where you're injuring an opponent and that should be at least a game i also think i just realized the atlantic division freaking hates dolly oh
Starting point is 01:08:29 and i just realized the malcolm thing was also against dolly yeah everybody hates this guy and that's a compliment to him he gets people fucking mad and now that they're good that's going to be so much more effective mad to the point where they can't control it yeah and sorry it was darren radish earlier in who beat uh daline up before this happened in the first oh okay yeah anyways so darren radish he like he saw red and and he definitely knew who he's fighting it was like i'm gonna i'm gonna take care of this because dalian is a pest and you can't but even if he's a pest you can't do this to him no the teams who have been doing this over and over and over again so florida um last year i don't think they had a home ice advantage the whole playoffs
Starting point is 01:09:13 which is crazy um they don't care i like i don't think the lightning legitimately care about winning the division i don't think they care so you could argue the the number one goal from this hockey game is to beat the shit out of the sabers they weren't counting on the sabers actually standing up for themselves no that was and and i think now we know the sabers are not um jesse there's a there's a picture i want you to bring up just at the top of the the the lightning uh saber segment there that i've got listed and you know people are going like why did they get the guys that they got people like sam carrick luke shen and a lot of people still have a hate on for logan stanley okay this picture will show all uh that's why you get sam karek to fight scott sabran scott
Starting point is 01:10:07 sabran who is there for one reason yeah what the what the sabers did was they go ah we're super skilled and we perhaps are a little soft right perhaps i don't think they were that soft but the leafs never they were soft the leafs never really reacted that way they never really they they were like no we'll continue to be soft and one day it'll go our way you just watch no the sabers are like no we know how to win and especially in the atlantic division you have to beat the shit out of people so they get sam carrick they get logan stanley and luke shen i think you guys laughed when i said it in the sam carrick trade video uh that we did on friday but sam carrick led the new york rangers in fights and i brought it up in in the video because it was
Starting point is 01:10:46 a lot yeah i think that's why i laughed because i was like really with matt rempe he led the team in fights and that's what they were acquiring like this is an important piece of their team and he had this fight in this game he also scored and it was an important goal in the game he he's an x factor that they don't have and i don't know an addition like sam carrick isn't something that should just go by the wayside he's going to be effective in these playoffs you should you could argue the sam carrick trade is already worth it for this one game yeah scored in a game you won by one goal he fought tampa's tough um and you have that picture forever like i that's worth the third and a sixth hundred percent he could that could be his last game as a saber it'd be worth
Starting point is 01:11:36 it the the game like towards the the third period was pretty clean but the things that affected the third period were tampa being not disciplined and taking slashing penalty uh towards the end there that allowed buffalo to go back onto the power play and then get back into it because buffalo was down late in that game by two games and they and two goals and they rallied to get back into it and jason zucker said something after the game in his post game avail that i thought was really important he said in the third period we were able to get back to playing hockey and i don't i don't know where it comes from but there seems to be a certain mental fortitude with these buffalo sabers that i didn't think existed with them based on the the 14 year history of them it's okay tampa
Starting point is 01:12:28 wants to muck it up with us we can muck it up with them too we're not going to back down but then when the third period rolls around and they're taking bad penalties to allow us to get back into the game we're allowed to play hockey again and get back into the game because we are so skilled and they have both which we see in really good championship teams like florida who can will get into everything with you if they want to go run your goalie with their elbows up and and accidentally on purpose take out your goaltender and then uh win the series against the leafs like that'll happen they texted they texted they're fine everything was they didn't do it on purpose no um but buffalo seems to also have that mentality of like we can spend the first two
Starting point is 01:13:07 periods racking up 100 penalty minutes and then the third when we have a lead and then blow it and then need to come back and win it we can do that because they're electric it's awesome they're electric they're amazing um i i uh if you guys have any more to say on the game say it now because i've got something that's seven straight wins the leafs have lost seven straight games post olympics the buffalo sabers have won seven straight games post hell yeah hell yeah brother that's got to feel good if you're from buffalo hey listen it's uh time to to to update that wardrobe because summer's on the way and then do you know that um yesterday which was uh when they changed the the clocks started off 227 227 straight days of sunshine past 6 p.m next wednesday it will
Starting point is 01:13:54 be like 200 and something or 190 something days or no 200 something days of sunshine past 7 p.m that's music isn't that great it's beautiful that's why you should check out doer update that wardrobe for the summer get a little sexy you know maybe get yourself some jeans squeak that butt into it you know what i'm saying but here's the great thing about doer is that they are comfortable enough jeans specifically for a plane ride well a lot of nobody wears jeans on a plane anymore but these are comfortable enough because they got the stretch they also have the antimicrobial fiber that not only allows you to regulate your temperature kind of a big deal for a guy like me also uh they stay cleaner longer doesn't get gross when you put your butt in it absolutely
Starting point is 01:14:32 exactly so we know you're gonna love doer and we want you to get your own pair of jeans from doer go to doer.ca slash sdp by the way jeans are not all they do but if you need a good pair you should check it out again doer.ca slash sdp that's going to get you 15 off your first order uh so the more you buy them or you save duer.ca slash sdp for 15 off doer.ca slash sdp um the oilers at one point this weekend after friday night's game against carolina had allowed 50 goals in 11 games man and then they played vegas last night for basically the lead in the division and they beat them but can anyone come away from a game like that feeling great last night was the perfect illustration of where both those divisions are yeah yeah the the lightning versus sabers was the
Starting point is 01:15:24 most electric event in the sport yesterday it was must watch tv and then the oilers versus vegas should have been an equal clash of the titans in the pacific they're not titans i didn't come away with it thinking either team was particularly great uh vegas continues its streak of not beating playoff teams no they did be right no i know i know but uh the ducks are one the ducks are number one in that division right now but it's close 73 72 and 70 so it's ducks golden knights oilers i you know there is a you know i i think there were people that were there were oiler fans who were upset with me for calling the oilers of the winners and losers i thought the oilers um at the trade deadline i was shocked at how little they did and i can
Starting point is 01:16:10 understand it in a vacuum where you're like well maybe this isn't our year to quote ken holland you can't go for it every year but uh and maybe their major lifting needs to come this off season and maybe that the problems that they have are are what they are and they just have to get through what they get through but i'm i'm i'm beginning to like i know uh connor signed an extra two years and that's great yeah but like it's getting late early here um i did win they did win but i'm like needing that and i also think i i get a question with vegas they're not actually bad right their goaltending is just bad um they come back a lot um i almost wonder if it's a little skewed in the west because like that three-headed monster the central division has just makes
Starting point is 01:17:00 everyone else look so mid but like that that streak they had before they beat detroit is kind of hard to ignore of not beating any playoff teams it's hard to ignore all the overtime and shootout losses and even some of the wins like a lot of them are comebacks and comebacks are good but it's uh what what's what's the saying like uh it's like killing rats or whatever i don't know if i've heard that one like uh yeah okay that's a useful skill but um the bigger problem is that you have rats yeah oh okay i think i've completely bastard i still get it though yeah i think i completely ruined it but um no like okay i don't i don't want to do this but vegas had 110 points in the standings last year what are they on pace for this year last
Starting point is 01:17:55 i checked it was 95 on pace i don't know last i checked it was 95 and i think it's still right around there they're not as good as they were last year objectively that's what i can't figure out though why is it the goaltending it's certainly part of it like aiden hill's a good goalie and they haven't had him for most of the season um and they haven't had good backup goaltending for most of the season and they've taken a number of steps to address that some of him pretty controversial but but that hasn't worked out yet in the 16 games he's played Aiden Hill as an 859 good yeah it hasn't been good this year he stinks and uh Akira Schmidt is an 893 like Akira Schmidt is heads and whales and shoulder Carter Hart's been is an 871
Starting point is 01:18:50 Carl Lindblom who's played eight games 873 so look at his record uh which one who Lindbaum 2-4-2 oh it's better than I thought it's still pretty shit though I mean he won 2 out of 8 games yeah I mean if you have an 8-59 goalie you're going to have a hard time winning games look at the Senators right that's a objectively good team with shit
Starting point is 01:19:12 goaltending yeah but like it's one of those things where okay yeah you got bad goaltending and also we've tried 4 guys like maybe you don't lend yourself to good goaltending maybe not this season I don't know that's fair yeah
Starting point is 01:19:27 I haven't been impressed with their defense at all. No? No, not really. But I think there's something there in that they're not really good at protecting their own end, and their goaltending is making them look bad. But sometimes you've got to come back to you'd like a stop every now and again. Aiden Hill, he came back in mid-Jan, and since then he's had one game where a save percentage has been above a 900. Was it against the Leafs?
Starting point is 01:19:57 no the kings there would have been great if it was yeah like they're not getting any stops and there was definitely an adjustment period with mitch marner and like figuring out what he's got to do there um in that lineup the the first red flags for me i was like why is he on the left wing he didn't do that the entire time he was here oh okay they took him off left wing why is he center i i don't fault them for trying stuff he still is center no i is he like i don't trying stuff is fine but like you spent you're spending 12 million dollars a season on a player who makes 12 million dollars a season because he's one of the most elite right wingers in the nhl and then you won't play him there which is confusing frankly and he's 40 in the face off dot yeah he's
Starting point is 01:20:50 not a center like his production's down yeah because he's not a center yeah what him and dorfayev do look good though or at least they've looked good against what i've watched they look like they've got chemistry there i think we need one's a great playmaker one's a great goal scorer of course they do i could have told you that before they played a game together and obviously there's going to be adjustment period with a player learning a new position like that right but i i don't know i don't fault them for trying marner at center because he has the skill sets to be a good center sure i fault the leafs for not trying it earlier he has skills he has to be quinn hughes if like they want to play him at defense right he's really good in his own then and like
Starting point is 01:21:31 if that translates to forward that would mean a great centerman i would sooner play him on d than center at least i've seen it right like with the on the admin to the other side of the game last night it was weirdly a really important game for that i shouldn't say weirdly i guess it makes sense when you look at where they are in the standings but that game meant a lot to them and looking at how they performed and how they got it done after being tied at second intermission like pulling out the victory it could spark a little confidence in them with with in that team going into the playoffs because when the game really matters they are able to rise to the occasion yeah it was top tier hockey for who had the stats on how big the game actually was for the
Starting point is 01:22:16 oilers so if they beat the kings in regulation which they did they have a 71 chance of making the playoffs golden knights what did i say kings oh knights sorry my bad if they beat the knights in regulation they get a 71 chance of making the playoffs so they did so right now there's 71 percent chance if they had lost in regulation that playoff odds drops to 54 percent that one game last night had a 20 swing in whether they were going to make the playoffs or not depending on how it ended in regulation wow it was a huge game for the oilers and they went in there and beat up on the kings and the king and on the knights in the course of habit at this point the kings they went in there and they beat the golden knights when they had to that to me is
Starting point is 01:23:05 like tip of the cap you did the thing that you were supposed to you finally got a good game out of connor ingram you know thank god you didn't start tristan jari ingram went in there and stopped enough shots and only allowed one and had a good game and in the game itself mcdavid didn't score definitely an x factor i think at two assists in there yeah one on an empty netter but yeah knob lock he's playing i think dry side only mcdavid too much they're most effective when it's spread out because they don't have the forward depth to support those two being on the same line which is unacceptable it's that and then that goes back to stan bowman didn't create a good enough team around 97 29 when they're in their primes and on the contracts that they are
Starting point is 01:23:48 and mcdavid's is a steal and the team's still not deep deep enough but they are able to pull out games that they do need so i don't i don't know how they're going to fare in the playoffs this year i mean recently recently they haven't played well enough for me to have confidence in them but i had to stop myself a couple times when i was shooting the video about mcdavid signing his contract extension because i was like they're gonna win the cup like they're gonna win the cut like they had just come off of two stanley cup finals i don't think we'd seen them play a game yet this season and you have the cap going up and mcdavid's cap hit not they're going to win the cup but then i had to think to myself i'm like that that contract extension actually has no effect
Starting point is 01:24:32 on this season other than mental which matters but in terms of the cap benefit there was the reason i thought they were going to win the cup that's not till next year so i wasn't all that shocked to see them not completely go for it because i think that's next year okay hey and that's cool that's cool and next year with with mcdavid heading into what could be a very interesting final season potentially final season of the deal anyway next season starting at this upcoming draft in a few months you dump the whole cupboard out but what if when you're shooting that video stan bowman whispers in your ear i'm gonna give all the money to trent frederick hey he scored yeah there's a thing he's been a little bit better recently oh my god no
Starting point is 01:25:24 well he has two goals that that contract's a disaster memory it's eight years yeah yeah it's crazy why is it full term why did it have to be a term that doesn't even exist anymore you can't even get nate your contract anymore but trent frederick has one you know what kills me is like i really were stealing was he the last player to ever sign one like i don't know he's got to be up there trent frederick i really liked trent frederick when he was great and i liked the trade i didn't obviously didn't know he was this injured uh but there's a world where he eventually gets it back but like there's no reason in his prime he was very good sure he's to eat us alive yeah How many points does he have this season?
Starting point is 01:26:07 Seven. Eleven. He's got five points. That's got to be nice. He's got four goals, one assist. Jesse, look up Garnett Hathaway. All right. There's no way he's still.
Starting point is 01:26:19 No. Stop it. I don't think he has. No. Garnett Hathaway points this season. Oh, he's got two points. Does he have a goal? He has a goal and an assist.
Starting point is 01:26:29 Look at him go! Jesse, look up Gus Nyquist. Okay. Gus Nyquist there's no way no he scored the other day Gus Nyquist has 10 points wow one goal
Starting point is 01:26:44 nine assists he got a goal Gus Gus Gus that's crazy man this episode is brought to you by Accenture when your advertising operations fall out of sync everything else follows

A couple of quick notes I want to mention before we get to Gary. And I'm going to touch quickly on Gary because we don't need to be on Gary that long. But in case you're wondering, I just wanted you to set your cable appropriately if you want to know which way the NHL is going. So it came out in The Athletic that Vinny Trocek, basically the Wild, were dying to get him.
Starting point is 01:29:12 and there's a guy that you should probably be aware of in minnesota system named charlie stromell who plays in college and he's a u.s national and this guy for michigan state has 44 points in 34 games this kid is holy this that is really hard to do he's 21 he's a right shot center which are very hard to get six foot three 215 pounds okay so the the the the rangers were offered stromel plus a center or sorry plus a future first round pick and a possible third piece and they said no for vinny trocek wow and i 21st overall pick 2023 wow i just wonder you know listen vinny's been very consistent for a long time and i think in a different system because i'm not convinced mike sullivan's got it anymore i think he'd be an extremely valuable
Starting point is 01:30:07 potentially back to a point of game player right he's got 40 points in 47 games this year obviously we saw he could do on the defensive side of the puck in um in milan uh he was very very good for team usa when you get offered a package like that and you're rebuilding and you don't take it like you think we're imagine imagine we'd found that out about one of the leafs any of them with the exception of matthews right like except austin they had a crazy package on the deal for oel and they didn't take it i would be pulling my hair out i can't believe that they didn't take that stromel and and the first round pick alone forget what the extra body is that would be worth this guy's 32 years old now question then can the wild sign stromel before
Starting point is 01:31:01 the season ends and have him join them potentially that maybe that maybe makes sense helps with their center issue yeah oh there's a spicy little aspect of this he's 21 they should be able to do that yeah well i just don't know if he's signed he's played well he probably not because he's in college he's played four seasons though yeah this is season four interesting um yeah that way leafs and rangers it's two different styles of suck yeah like brad just leaves everything the last minute runs at a time and goes oh shit and uh the rangers um very intentionally said nah yeah we know this could help us rebuild but we're good and he could be good like that was the type of prospect i wanted brad to chase maybe not at that level because that's we didn't sell anything
Starting point is 01:31:48 that was that good no but guys that are nhl ready i don't want a first round fucking pick i know a guy that's gonna play next year i know what you mean i i need to we need to hurry this up we got austin and willie austin's got what two more years after this one uh yeah like we need him we need you now 28 is when his contract is that's why i'm saying this time next year we might be talking about okay well what are we going to get for austin and the other one i looked at was rasmus ristelainen who depending upon who you ask is either very good and underrated or awful and has always been bad the flyers didn't move him and they now have because they acquired david Juracek a huge glut at right shot D and they're all big score to goal and a big comeback for
Starting point is 01:32:36 Lehigh Valley Risto Drysdale Juracek and Oliver Bonk as well and I'm just kind of wondering like did they miss the boat on Rasmus Ristolainen because the kind of game he plays let's just say they're in the same position next year and I've got no real reason to believe the Flyers are going to get all that much better I don't I don't know what the deal is there I mean they traded a good young defense or a good young winger bobby brink for uh thank you i don't i mean i know i love david you're a check wish him the best but you had you had a really good defensive or a good depth winger like what are you doing everyone's wrong on rasmus tristelainen by the way he's bad and underrated okay it's a combo give it to me give it to us well that's oh that's all you're
Starting point is 01:33:21 gonna give us he's bad but he's not quite as bad as everyone when you play like he does um i feel like they're taking a big old risk at 31 years old that he's going to be valuable to an acquiring team in the same way that he could have been this year don't you well i mean proof is in the pudding you want to be the rangers do you want to be the rangers no great that's why they made a bad decision do you want to be the flyers no well they make bad decisions what are we what are we surprised by mitch goss fat too by the way did it did it is anybody uh no i just i didn't get it i didn't get it and this is not like this is a guy who's played 25 games this year has six points and they are willing to give you major assets for him he used to get 40 points a year
Starting point is 01:34:07 rasp is ristalainen hasn't had 40 points in a year since 1819 is it because he changed his game to not be the guy who uh scores a goal every game and allows three yeah probably yeah okay i don't know i just feel like maybe that that those are a couple of names i just wanted to bring up i know as a leaf fan takes one to no one oh yeah like yeah rangers made a bad decision oh man that's nuts that's crazy made a bad decision we're gonna do a segment on how the clocks went back a couple days ago as well like um i want to quickly uh mention for the nhl um on a recent episode which you can listen to of the varsity podcast um nhl commissioner gary best betman suggested that the league won't centralize its local broadcast rights like the mlb and the nba but that the league would
Starting point is 01:35:01 be available to support production and distribution of those games if necessary so obviously you know they want to he said in the short term you're going to see teams look for local solutions some will stay on regional sports channels a few of them are still viable uh some of them will go direct to victory plus or something like that. And some are going to stay over the area. In those cases, the clubs have been able to replicate the rights to a large extent and the ratings have dramatically increased. I don't know if that's necessarily the case, by the way. In addition, we've developed the capability of our clubs and then any club that needs assistance in distributing games. We have the app, we have the production capabilities, and we will assist. The goal with
Starting point is 01:35:41 that is to make sure our fans have access to games and a business model that we want working in a changing environment. Local rights are just one piece of this. But what I find interesting about this is that the MLB and the NBA are centralizing these because it didn't make business sense for some of these local providers to have them anymore, and they were failing. And every year we're talking about, oh, they're on the brink of bad. Oh, Amazon might buy them. oh they didn't buy them like it's a mess right and i know it's super boring but why wouldn't you just take it all in-house and make it available like every other thing i know i could get hey is this movie available in canada and netflix no it's not available just toronto it's
Starting point is 01:36:24 available everywhere right they're gonna have to move to this mop no adam if a podcast uses screenshots that are too close together you have to take the whole channel down that's the business model but but the local rights where they could be maximizing subscription dollars imagine tomorrow right you have something that works as well as netflix netflix rarely fails right and or works as well as youtube youtube rarely fails it's behind a paywall steve i'm gonna charge you 30 bucks a month american so that's 45 canadian holy hot damn i'm gonna call you 45 bucks a month but you can watch any nhl game on demand anytime fast forward whatever you want i would business that you would business that right would you not of course why can't
Starting point is 01:37:15 we just do that nah nah do you get more for like i assume all your partners like rogers for example and espn would be pissed about that well it's less of a canada problem except for When Rogers Farms their rights out to TSN, because if you're in the region, you have to watch TSN. If you're out of the region and you have Sportsnet Plus, their super package, which I have, then you can watch the game. But if you have only Sportsnet Plus and it's the lower package, you know that the game's available and you might be outside of the Ottawa region, but you can't watch it because you didn't pay the extra to watch the Ottawa out of town games. This is where I'm like, this is so fucking confusing. You see how annoying this is to talk about? take my money or i'm stealing it yeah jesse what did you say earlier in the show would say thank
Starting point is 01:38:07 god for the live stream or the uh the stream yeah it's now regional backups are stupid insane you if you black it out like they look at it like okay we're gonna black it out which means someone's going to buy it it's actually not what it means it means they're either just gonna steal it or they're not gonna watch your product so watch something else just watch something else it's 2026 what there's 82 games i missed a game a lot of people are like that there's a lot of people who don't watch every game baseball's starting sons hey the sun's up past seven o'clock at night now yeah they're like i could go outside i could touch grass i could ride a bike everyone's really into porn literature now i could get into porn literature like you
Starting point is 01:39:00 you over pronounced it on purpose porn literature oh literature porn literature um yeah man uh just will either steal or ignore your product those are the two outcomes make it easy gary one out of every thousand nerds is gonna be like all right here's my money and jesse is that nerd people who can business expense it are the nerds yeah who are gonna do it i get to write it off for the tax man like yeah of course that's awesome sick you should all incorporate by the way a lawyer told me that once everyone should incorporate they recommend to everyone whether you run a business or not you should incorporate um because you can do stupid shit like that yeah yeah that's it it's crazy like anyway i don't know i don't need to over complicate it uh no
Starting point is 01:39:51 one's gonna buy it they're just gonna steal it or they're gonna ignore it there you go there's the only three things you need to know stop doing it the european nhl fans they have it nice because nhl what was it called nhl tv or whatever it's called they still have that over there where it's like hey you just pay 30 bucks a month or whatever and you get every game just on their streaming service so that's pretty cool i wish we had that other parts of the world are also better at stealing media than us i learned that by marrying a brit um aussies might be the gold medalist worldwide like they'll just yeah they'll just pirate it exactly well make it easy because the nhl made it easy that's right exactly no but that's that's what i'm saying the nhl is like
Starting point is 01:40:34 oh man they know how to steal our products let's just let's just let's not fuck with them let's save that for canada and the states yeah anyway long story short just thought of bringing it up and uh we'll leave it there uh i have a stream i believe tomorrow night against the leafs and Leafs and Canadians tomorrow night. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see you tomorrow night. If we're going to go down on the good ship depression,
Starting point is 01:40:55 we're going down together. All right? Yeah. I couldn't believe the Leafs still haven't done their Western Conference California road trip. That's still coming. That's still coming. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:05 Yeah. They haven't played Anaheim, LA, San Jose, that little trio. End of the month. Yeah. It's coming. They're going. They might win one game on that. One.
Starting point is 01:41:15 And it'll be the end of the game. 3-0. the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
