And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals.
see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task

the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
and currently brad marchand is at a dairy queen uh he is quite literally at a dairy queen they
tweeted out the address he's going in and he's meeting fans and that sort of thing he's been up
all night if if you are wondering who's playing house music in a dairy queen that's actually the
heartbeat in brad marshand's head 100 all night they won on wednesday yeah no two what day was
tuesday so they've been up for friday they've been up since tuesday night that's crazy like
they haven't gone to bed i just sent you a picture uh this is what happened last night
uh there's a bunch of videos of last night of brad having a really really really good time
it's and i just i think when you look at this picture guys you're gonna be like how is he at
the dairy queen because as jesse points out this man's 37 years old i am the same age as brad and
i can't stay up one night he's a dad eh he's he's such a dad that's crazy he's a dad and uh wants
you to know you're a bitch ass hoe that's what he called kulikov he said that 34 times he said it
so many times and when you get into uber repetition um mode that's how you know he's just
gunned okay look at this look at that's the best time of his life that was last night and into this
morning who's that spraying him is that matthew chuck that's that's incredible accuracy there'd
be more hair there would be more hair and beard i would think it's just incredible champagne
spraying into the mouth accuracy i uh i don't think there'll ever be a better picture of brad
marchand ever no that's incredible that's going up on his wall now a million percent there are so
many videos of brad having a good time and i just wanted to play a couple and we can't play any of
them with sound but they were at a club called 11 uh and apparently the club loves that club
it's his favorite steve loves 11 and magic city oh yeah yeah yeah there you go i don't know so i
was in miami when somebody got when the heat won their first championship with lebron i was there
that day are those places in like grand theft auto or okay no i just said he's a strip club in atlanta
yeah oh yeah the frequency that was the one where remember those all the viral videos during covid
of people getting together they were all from magic city right literally all for magic city
like right yeah got it and we were all up here with our masks on crying at home this next one
is incredible it's so good it's so good this is uh this is brad being uh this is brad being
crowd surf with the stanley cup yeah they're like they're throwing how much does brad weigh
uh like he's got to be uh i'm gonna go with a buck 95 yeah right hey i guess he's not the
tallest dude so he probably he's not two bills five nine stocky though yeah yeah but yeah they're
just tossing them up and down plus the stanley cup which is 50 pounds yeah 35 35 and yeah that's
cool yeah it looks like popcorn as they're professional athletes yeah no it's awesome
you have the one of brad on stage jesse that i sent over it's it's so good i love because remember
the brad on stage is always great because you remember during the baroons parade he started
doing black and yellow just having the best time just the best time oh my god yeah yeah is it too
much to ask do we all get to experience this once uh just once no once in our lives you don't get
to experience it you're a leaf in now this comes on the heels of brad and and cj tweeted some of
these pics out i'll send it over to you jesse if you want to play uh brad going through all of his
teammates and thanking their former teams for giving up on you and he put that on instagram
and he also at the end thanked the bruins yeah screen thank you nhl bruins that is hilarious
tough i listen not to make it about the leafs but it's relevant how didn't the leafs catch a stray
there they didn't catch a single stray to come here oh i think he was really nice that's the
theory that i've seen online now brad treliving caught a ton of strays yes he did sam bennett
matthew kachuk sam bennett matthew kachuk uh i want to say there was another one but like
carter verhage could have put the leafs didn't yeah but let's be honest could have put the
leaves and didn't oh dude he was like adding american hockey yeah you're right you're right
like everyone can get it and uh who was the other one evan rodriguez leaf legend yes he was the
leaf for two seconds and then dubas wouldn't qualify him because he wanted him he wanted
to make one and a half, and Evan Rodriguez ended
up making 2.1. Both Evan Rodriguez
and Jared McCann were Leafs property.
Never played a game. Matty, you can throw this up on the screen
here. This is Brad Marchand's
Instagram story where he's just going
through it, and he
is tagging all the NHL
teams from where all of the Panthers
came from. It's incredible.
It's not elaborate. Doesn't need to be.
Just thanks. Thanks.
There's some of these guys that don't even recognize
them. You know what I love, too?
thanks is that people have won the cup and had a good time but nobody's had more fun than this
year's penguins absolutely penguins panthers nobody's having less fun than this year's penguins
uh nobody is having more fun than these guys like this is how you enjoy something no no go back to
the verhagey one the crunch who are the kc mavericks they gotta be echl right i have no
idea kansas city maverick kansas city syracuse crunch i know but who the hell are the mavericks
They're an ECHL team.
ECHL, there you go.
This guy's taking shots at ECHL teams.
But no Leafs in that.
Yeah, no, he wants them to come here.
His thumbs are rated E for everyone.
And it's at BtreLiving.
Dude.
He should have.
He honestly should have.
I think Brad Treleving would get a kick out of that.
I think he'd find that really funny.
The Dale Tallon one, where he thanks.
You did a Dale Tallon one?
Yeah.
Thanks, Dale Tallon?
Oh, there it is.
Yeah.
Thanks, Dale Tallon.
Oh, no.
Wait, I don't get it.
So wait, here, here, here, here.
Go back.
So that's Ekblad, Lundell, and Barkov.
Oh, he was the general manager.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, that's smart.
But like all the other ones, he tagged the team.
So what does he have against Dale Talon?
So he's looking at these guys and going, all right,
no one screwed these guys up.
How do I still get my licks in?
That's great.
Oh, and then thanks Blue Jackets.
Yeah.
Because they didn't keep Zito.
He should have thanked the Edmonton Oilers who said,
we'd rather have ken holland thanks very much you skipped over the best one mr waivers
i didn't skip we played it that's forsling oh which uh where is where is forsy it's back it's
in there so yeah who cares they're all in there yeah no but he's thinking like again like i don't
recognize these teams jets and by the way palmer is left the jets why are they no they're catching
straight he left oh yeah season last night he was doing like nuanced research uh for sure this
Mr. Wavers. There you go. Mr. Wavers. Thanks
Canucks, Rockford, Ice Hogs, Black
Hawks. Oh, sorry. I didn't even see that last
one. Oh, the Checkers
the Canes. Yeah, I
had no idea Gus Forsling was a Canuck. I knew
the Canes. Yeah, neither did I
had no idea about any
teaching us stuff. Hockey
he's going around the table
going. Where'd you play? Where'd
you play? I'm tweeting. I'm tweeting on
Instagram. I'm tweeting on Instagram. I'm a
dad.
this is all-time unk post i was trying to read the sign in the back let's see but i can't read
it this to something probably says please don't break shit could chuck's been wearing this belt
for three straight days hasn't taken that off no and why should he that thing smells like cheese
the dude did it with like no knee that thing smells like he's an nhl player he's been wearing
it for three days and covered in champagne covered in any of them taking a shower oh i think so yeah
okay i think the cure and cause of every disease is on the back of that belt you you gotta you
gotta if you're not if you're gonna stay up all night you at least have to smell good i think
he'll smell have you seen the videos of bark off blackout no um ringing his neighbor's doorbell
47 times at five in the morning there's more from last night no i haven't seen it he was he was on
instagram live and he's wearing a reinhardt jersey and he's talking to the instagram live
and he's like there's there's two things in my instagram search i i tried to type in
sam reinhardt and i typed in summer ray
there's two things in my instagram summer ray and sam reinhardt i don't know who's summer ray
is instagram bottom adam should i be looking that up no man okay all right i don't know who that is
I don't know who that is.
No man believes you.
No man believes Adam's like,
Natalie's going to be listening to this.
I've got to pretend.
I don't know who that is.
I've got to make sure Natalie doesn't hear this.
I don't know who that is.
I don't know who Summer Rae is.
Man.
Okay, now I just sent you a video.
The Caps fan.
Right.
The Caps fan.
Right.
No, that's the other one.
Oh, gotcha.
That's the other one.
That was the joke.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, that one I know.
I know her.
How come?
How come?
She's kind of...
She had a picture with Matt Sundin.
there it is there you go um i want to uh i want to play this because obviously the sam bennett
contract negotiations have been uh out there and we can play this because there is no music i did
check this uh reinhardt by the way wearing what i assume is a barkov jersey barkov jersey a team
finland bark was actually on clearance here at sport check until a few uh a few days ago somebody
bought it hey um but uh yeah so the the to bark off gets the crowd to quiet down and it's actually
the audio on this isn't great give me a second that's okay uh it's all right jesse we will tap
dance the audio on this one isn't great so if you're subwoofer guy be sure to log on to discord
and make sure that you make your discord known you see what i'm saying it's not great sorry
i'm gonna get like all the lowest voice people in the world to just swallow the microphone yeah
until your windshield breaks just shatters while you're on the highway no is that dangerous i think
that's bad is that not allowed i don't think that's possible i don't think that's possible
from from spotify audio i don't think that don't do that i know that's bad for the mic
yeah you know i know you own the company with us and everything but like we don't
here we go sam bennett declaring that he's signing his new contract
I don't know what else to say.
I don't know what else to say.
I'm a f***ing genius!
My heart's telling the crowd to quiet down.
I'm a f***ing genius!
Hilarious.
Now, here comes...
That's really good.
he did his job this morning and said is that true to the to his representation and he's and
and then was tweeting out that listen the negotiation still needs to take place oh stop it
but it feels like he doesn't want to go do you guys want to see the video of the drunkest man
alive yes yes sasha barkoff on instagram live there's never been a more blackout person in
history second language blackout drunk has got to be the hardest thing in the world it's amazing
He doesn't know where he is.
Sasha Barkov here.
So I have two names in the search column in my Instagram.
But one is by mistake.
You guys ready?
Let's get back in there.
There's two names in the search column.
This is an NHL captain.
You probably don't know who it is.
No, no.
Sam Reinhardt.
Here we go.
Let's go.
Like, it's my...
all right uh accident accident like i wanted to write sam reinhardt uh-huh it's closing all right
it's closed it came up like i just saw so i finally like accidentally pressed there
i accidentally pressed her
and i accidentally press her sasha we didn't need to know buddy he doesn't know
you're answering questions no one asked yeah oh my god he sounds a bit like boomerish on that
right like he thinks that people are gonna know because remember back in the day was it on
instagram you used to be able to tell who your friends were liking yeah they had the tab on
instagram where you see like this person liked this post this person in comment that was crazy
jesse and i had a friend uh who will remain nameless you i think jesse will know this friend
who was like the horniest person oh every day it was like this guy was liking like and it was not
not like a little bit it was like it's like i can see this bro yeah and also what do you think that
like's gonna get you anyway no they're that's gonna get them a win ah they're gonna do it
also with you for sure stop clicking on that horny shit and answer your text yeah
stop clicking on that and answer your text i'm swearing in the sport check yeah my bad
now people were asking uh there is they're not gonna let us do this again are they there is a
video out there uh of people of of and i think matthew good chuck is leading it of them on stage
yelling f mcdavid uh fuck me i saw uh f the oilers and it was aj greer yeah okay so that's funny man
that's funny now uh for everybody that wants to know uh as of this morning apparently the magic
number for brad marchand to sign him in free agency is 24 million dollars per year uh not per
year uh but i mean if it was the leafs have the cap space to do it yeah that's right you know what
gotta change the dna bro exactly gotta change the dna it's worth it so uh so that's interesting
sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things
One of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows, but they never clean my windows.
Uh-oh.
And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window.
You can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you've got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals.
You've got to have the right chemicals.
See, that's what I'm saying.
That's why I used TaskRabbit, and I employed a tasker.
Here's the thing.
task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn
maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of
furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get
ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using
the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off
your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app
you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle now let's compare and contrast what we just showed
you the joy the jubilation to to this connor leafs golfing no no sorry no no no although that
i felt bad the leafs met at a golf course like a couple days after the season ended like see
They're already golfing.
I'm like, leave these guys alone.
They're at a private course trying to hang out with their buddies, lick their wounds.
But McDavid, that being said, I want to make a t-shirt.
That being said, Connor McDavid was asked about his future.
And of course he was.
He's the best player on the planet.
And in 11 or 12 days, he's going to be able to sign a contract that keeps him in Edmonton as long as Leon Dreisaitl.
Or longer, actually, because he can go eight years.
And if the rumors are to be believed, he might be one of the last guys to get an eight-year contract because it's looking like the new CBA will not allow.
The rumor is the new CBA will not allow eight-year deals.
It'll be seven-year deals.
And then if you sign a free agent, the max you can sign them to is six million or six years.
Why are they doing that?
I don't know.
That's going to make all the difference.
I think that the NHL owners are trying to save themselves from themselves.
Be adults.
No, they can't.
Now, let's play Connor McDavid asked about his future.
Go ahead.
We're fans and then everybody.
And Leon said, obviously, he'd like to be here forever.
It's not something he had to talk about.
But with the July 1st window opening, when you look at, you know,
just what you've built here with this team and how close it is,
do you feel like there's unfinished business for you?
Absolutely.
Yeah, absolutely.
This core has been together for a long time.
And we've been building to this moment.
um you know all along um the work that's gone on behind the scenes the conversations the
endless you know disappointments and and and you know some good times along the way obviously as
well um yeah we're we're all in this together um this is good so far get it over that finish line
um with that being said i'll probably um still need to do what's best for me and my family and
you know that's who i have to take care of first but of course there's unfinished business here
you ever been to like a wedding or a vow renewal that included with that being said
well i think i think you know oh i see what he's saying there like i don't know if it needs to be
completely blown out of proportion i see what he's saying wrong it's just there's a huge chasm
between i'm not fucking leaving and oh with that being said it's got to do what's best for my
family this i think should be a lesson to anyone no not pointing any fingers anyone who thinks
they were close uh versus anyone who actually won do you see the difference what no tell us
all the difference in the world you got it done or you didn't you were first or you were not first
you took a step or you didn't sometimes it's just a bit you don't have to necessarily win every year
but you could take a step forward i'm not saying everyone who doesn't win the stanley cup all 31
teams need to feel like crap about themselves i am not saying that but look at the last three
days for one team in the last three days for another you'd rather be one there's a huge
difference it's not a one next to the win column it's not uh you know about stat chasing at the
end of a career or legacy or all that it's this experience versus that experience can i say though
guys that i would rather be both i'll take either yeah um as a leaf fan i would love the privilege
of losing in a stanley cup final we are we are the only team outside of the jets who it's not
really fair because we've been around the whole time they haven't
that have gone, not gone to the
final, sorry, gone to the, yeah, we're the only team
that hasn't gone to the final and lost. Montreal
has, Ottawa has, Edmonton, Calgary
have been amongst Canadian
teams. Yeah, I want to be,
I want to lose in the finals too, man. I mean,
why not? The Leafs have lost
that series to the Panthers every day
for the last month.
Alright, I'm going to put the fourth line out
there to end this game because you guys
got to, oh my god!
That mic'd up moment was contact.
Everything is about the Leafs.
Tell us the contact.
Paul Maurice, for the final shift of Game 6 against the Oilers,
the clinching game, throws the fourth line out there
because he's like, oh, you guys got it done for us Game 3
when we were down 2-0 to Toronto,
which they had a very, very good game.
They outscored the Leafs 1-0, which isn't huge,
but that game went to overtime.
And the Leafs' fourth line didn't do that against anybody, actually.
so it was a huge help for them and it was a nice gesture and i'm like oh my god can we stop
catching strays for five minutes holy shit dude it's been it's been a month they've lost the
series every day for a month but the narrative the coming out of this week is that the leafs
are the second best team oh my god no it's not no it is it is exactly not yes i think it's
anybody else they basically lost the stanley cup no they didn't yeah they did you simply
that the leafs lost the stanley cup in round two i think i failed out of grade 10 i basically got
to grade 12 i i i basically got to grade 12 i think it's important to live 70 80 90 100 years
and learn nothing along the way i i think that's so important live be born live and die having
learned nothing. Can we play the other
answer from McDavid on his
future in Edmonton? Yes, please.
Here we go. Connor, respecting that
you mentioned how much, you got some
things to think about, obviously, but
what are those things? What do you want
to kind of drill down?
So I looked it up.
His hat is a yoga brand. Yeah,
that's a terrible logo.
It's a
terrible logo.
It's so distracting.
It's so distracting.
Adam, you go in on him.
Look what it looks like.
Go in on him, Adam.
Steve.
What do you think it looks like?
Steve, that is one of the hottest brands right now.
Okay.
Connor McDavid is also a spokesperson for the band and his wife.
That's great.
Yeah.
And you say it looks like a dick and balls is what you're saying.
I didn't say that.
You did.
Someone's taking a picture of us right now while we're having this amazing conversation.
Steve.
And they're wearing If You're a Goal Tender shirt.
Yeah.
hey don't have a logo that looks like a i'm shocked like how many dick and balls steve how
haven't you heard of aloe up until like yesterday i i haven't heard of it i because jesse had i
heard of it i'd be like what's with your dick and balls hat navy jesse yeah so so one of the
hottest brands in the world you're just telling me there's gaggles of people wearing a dick and
balls logo gaggles in fact i've worn the dick and balls logo on this podcast i have an aloe sweater
this is that well guess what old south park dick and balls that's what it looks like dude
it looks oh my god all right it's okay it's okay it's an odd hill to die on it's not a hill to die
on i'm merely saying that's what it looks like i hope nobody's package looks like that i just
want to say that me too that sound that looks very painful and if they do wear it right on
i'd like maddie's opinion on this steve that's like the hottest take of the century yeah i gotta
say well yeah there it is there it is it's definitely there it's right there expand on
that you gotta give it to him a little bit more i don't even know where to start i bet it's
comfortable this is like one of the most popular like what adam said one of the most popular brands
right now for any it's like the it's like the elevated lulu lemon yeah like fc uk is a very
popular brand, too, but we're all thinking
fuck when we see the logo. I think it's just
you, buddy. That was the intention, though. Yes!
I think this is just you. Aloe was
just like, no, we just do, we're
just doing all sorts. I don't think any of us
had that thought. I think this is you.
I fear. By the
way, I hope the
friggin' stock for that
just plummets. I can't, by the way, I cannot
believe that somebody mentioned FC
UK. It's been a long time.
You know why they died out?
Because everyone's like, I'm going to stop wearing the fuck shirt.
but i think it gives you an insight into steve's references you know like next he's gonna be like
i'm not a mature i actually took a look at connor mcdavid in this and i was like wow
aloe like good for him yeah he's a brand ambassador yeah and i thought
yeah you thought something else really unfortunate logo dash let's play the clip let's play the
actual clip on this you make a decision here on a contract extension and the thought of possibly
staying here for a while uh winning would be at the top of the list and then um you know winning
would be the it's the most important thing um if i feel that there's a a good window to win here
um over and over again um then signing is no problem um you know um
yeah i i again it's it's only been a couple of days um you know i'm sure we'll get into it over
over the course the next couple of weeks um but again i i'm not in a rush to uh to make any
decision so i don't think that there needs to be any timeline you know i know people are going to
look at that july one day and and and be looking to see if there's anything done um but for me
there's no i'm not i'm just not in a rush that way so you know i thought that was there was a lot
in there a lot unsaid what are you okay what do you guys get from that well here's here's what i
here's the overarching theme because everyone's trying to make this about mcdavid signing with
my team and like that's just not what i take away from this the the most striking thing about the
last three days for the oilers especially after the game the next day i mean these poor guys just
keep talking um last year they were devastated and it radiated off them they were heartbroken
they were crushed they almost pulled off the most magical comeback in nhl history
and couldn't do it they fell just one goal short
you're you're in the dressing room you hear what's going on outside
just you're they were immediately overcome by the tantalizing realization of how close they were
mm-hmm this year it was just immediate depressing acceptance they skipped over all the stages
maybe not all of them but the most important guys especially connor and leon skipped right over
everything and there was a bit more of an air uh less of we could have done it
and more so we got our asses kicked well because they're not closer so they got farther away
literally so jesse what do you what do you deduce from that so yeah on mcdavid's words
specifically him talking about how there's a decision to be made in in his mind on whether
he wants to sign there long term like i think that's a message to the front office that this
is going to be a negotiation i'm not just taking whatever you offer me which is fair like they're
going to offer him the sun and the moon but he's the best player in the world he needs more than
that he needs more than just the 15 million dollars you want to pay him over eight years
he needs an assurance from stan bowman and jeff jackson and knoblock that they are going to be
better because winning as he said is the most important thing to him and that includes you
gotta figure out the goaltending situation they're getting a goalie they're coming the first by the
first couple days free agency is over like you need something there whether it's signing or a
trade you need to figure out the goalie situation they need to figure out the contracts because
it's looking pretty bleak when you're locking up all this money on guys who aren't performing up
to their contract i think darnell nurse in particular is the standout contract that was
making 9.25 million dollars how do you surround connor mcdavid with the talent that he needs when
one guy's making that much money so he's he's sending a message i think to the front office and
i think it gets done in all honesty in my mind that he signs a short-term deal yeah i think
there's a there's a two-year deal out there for connor mcdavid from the oilers because i think
well though what do you want connor we'll give you that exactly they have to sign they have to
accept whatever he wants on that end and they obviously want the long-term deal but i think
at the end there's probably some two-year deal in august he's signing but he needs to know first
that the Oilers are better than this year's
Oilers next season. But why sign it in
August? There's no reason.
Why not wait? No, because the
conversation all season long is too much.
Well, okay. Hold on. Hold on. I want to
say something quickly. Okay.
I'm the historian here. I know. I know.
We were at Boston Pizza
last year
and we were talking about this
run that the Oilers were on and they
hadn't yet made the finals. And Keith
Acton, former coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs
assistant head coach, who
owns that Boston pizza came on the show and he's been on a couple times and he's awesome and what
he said was he thought that Connor McDavid would be among the greatest of all time just for getting
to the finals with this group of guys that's what he said which is not a compliment even and and I
think we all got more out of the Oilers we the Oilers gave us more last year and this year than
we thought that they were capable of let's be honest i had la beating them in the first round
what a freaking moron yeah but once once they won the one game i'm like oh okay never mind la's dead
they're back but last year we didn't we didn't see that either no and i think i think that is
like stan bowman two weeks from now we will be the friday after free agency yeah right free
agency's on a tuesday if by that friday which i believe is july the 4th america day sure
if he does not have a new goaltender start ringing alarm bells and i'm talking about you you're not
gonna be able to sign your goal like it's not gonna be jake allen i was just about to say like
who the hell do you get there's you trade oh man you trade you have a vander kane as a trade
trade piece go make it happen yeah um you got you've got to do something yes and and so and
and that brings us to historian steve what people forget about connor mcdavid the last time he
signed his contract the beginning of his 100 million dollar 12.5 uh million dollar contract
is a rumor leaked a few days maybe a week before he ended up signing the deal
that the number was like 13 or 13 and a half or something absurd now you're like well something
absurd he's gonna get more than that this time yeah this time seven years ago pre-covid 12 and a
half million dollars was lunacy in the nhl perhaps not for him but for anyone in a league where uh
only a handful of players were even making 10 this guy signs 12.5 it was at the time far and away
the most money any player was making per year and the rumor was he was asking for more than that
so when he signed for 12.5 it was spun that oh look at this beautiful little discount that
connor mcdavid gave now you got to be careful with that because people have a long memory for
their own money and it's okay if you think he took a discount and he's a great guy it's a big
problem if he thinks he took a discount on his last contract because that's just going to be 16
at what would be an amount of money that you think would cripple your team like you pay him
whatever is just beneath that yep if you had 20 million dollars in cap space and the opportunity
connor's like yeah i'll sign uh you sign him and anybody why wouldn't you it's connor mcdavid then
then don't expect uh to ever be in nhlgm not that i ever do but it's one of those like you sign the
best player in the sport and you take your chances yes yeah like what what are we doing here this
this i remember the conversation we were having at the time like guys who were making 10 and 11
million dollars we're like you're not one or two million dollars away from connor mcdavid
like this is a bad contract because of his contract and again that was another glimpse
into how what he took was a discount i just don't see that happening this time around leon
is about to make 14 and he signed that before we knew the cap was going to explode
i'm telling you like just pure guess i i think i think it would be a runaway success
if he signed for 15 a run run away don't ask any questions sign it take it to the bank fax it to
the league that's it i don't even care about the amount of years on it if mcdavid agrees to 15
you slam it down on the desk and build your team around him and i think that's why you get the
shorter term deal with mcdavid i think like he recognizes like if i want this team to be
competitive i'm gonna have to take something like 15 and if i'm taking 15 it's gonna be on like a
really short deal wouldn't you do a one year like like remember lebron was doing those when he does
one and one just keep doing one and one yeah but you can't do it you can't do there's no player
options in the nhl hockey is so weird how the player is not negotiated for that hockey is very
insular though and these are not the same but i think in the brain you can compartmentalize it
like it's a little bit the same uh jack eichel's neck surgery had been done it had been done on
other sports two other athletes uh with great results and great success it had never been done
in hockey so there was this huge reluctance to do it the second jack because your sport's so much
different than everybody else's sport but then jack eichel got it done and it went okay and all
of a sudden there are now several players in the nhl who have gotten it done patrick kane
hip resurfacing he had the there's another that's a great example john clingberg got it
the hip resurfacing hadn't worked patrick kane gets it done it appears to have worked now people
forget like medical advancements they get better um uh my uncle this i know he's not an nhl player
but like stick with me for a sec he got a hip replaced i think it was about a decade ago
that surgery took i think he said six hours he got another hip replacement a few months ago it
was 45 minutes you know things things change he was you said he was walking the next day he's
walking the next day with a cane right and now i don't even think he's using the cane uh this has
never been done in the nhl where guys just go year to year to year to year like lebron but
if there were ever a player you were going to do it with this is the one well lebron was the guy
that kind of started it lebron is lebron in basketball conor mcdavid is conor mcdavid in
hockey if you were ever going to do it with those comparisons was that pipe down with those
comparisons i think the two-year deal makes more sense for mcdavid just because like there's there's
a little bit too much noise around a one year yeah then you just keep repeating the conversation over
and over again i don't think mcdavid's type of guy to want that then hockey doesn't feel like
the team sport to do that it just i feel it's two feels right and i think that's where he's going
but that's just educated guess i don't even know if it's educated uneducated guess hey it's as good
as anybody else's guess right now with with with conor mcdavid i don't even know if conor mcdavid
knows what he wants because as we were saying adam like i think it depends on what stan bowman
does come july 1st and like the week preceding that like i think there's moves there the oilers
need to do to get better and come the mid-july mark you have to look at the oilers on paper and
say that they are better than the team that just lost to the florida panthers and if you can't do
that then conor mcdavid's going to be wishy-washy about his future there but if you can then things
look good well just see they locked up trent frederick for eight years that's a lot man we
haven't talked about that deal since because it happened after the podcast i think we are going
to it now so i think that i think that's a little too much money for a guy who's not guaranteed to
be in your top six i don't think it's well too much can i just read you the headline i think
it's too much commitment it's way too much commitment like 3.75 million for a guy who's
a little bit of a unicorn in the nhl for just how tough of a bastard he is like 6-3-2-25 something
like that he wants to play more center and can he plays wing scored 17 goals than 18 goals he had an
offseason like any
Oilers fan who watched him all
playoff long and watched him play his
one game in the regular season that he shouldn't have even
played any Oilers fan who saw
any of that I don't blame you for being
hesitant about
this player he had a terrible season if
he gets back to what he was
before the injury I think that contract is
perfectly reasonable
what confuses me is that you felt
the need with all
this going on to
lock him up for eight years now just spitballing trying to think of all the things we know about
conor mcdavid when he was in junior he was asked a question like uh fantasy you can play with anyone
in the league they're your line mates who do you want and keep in mind he's a child when he said
this but he goes milan lucic okay now that was like 2014 milan lucic was hot shit right and it
make sense but that he likes that kind of player and then who did the Oilers end up getting they
went out and they got Milan Lucic now you better hope Trent Frederick is not a repeat of Milan
Lucic at least Trent Frederick's a centerman for them most of the time but he's he's also a
torpedo yeah I get that I it's a complete torpedo the deal's not done yet I feel like that should
also be said yes it's not official it's not confirmed the number we have is a range of a
number it's 3.5 to 4 million dollars is the report and the eight years so who knows what it comes
down to it comes out of 4 million over eight years for trent frederick that seems like a weird
contract to hand out when you don't know what mcdavid's future is and you need as much cash
space as you can get at all points during his window while he's on the edmonton oilers well
and i think you look at the uh first off i just i want to say that the edmonton journal called
reported it was i love this headline oilers lock up top forward uh top power forward
oh right i mean there was a time the propaganda continues but i i listen and they also they should
be writing that because they haven't done it well it was it said like more to come or whatever
and that was two days ago more to come more like not come the actual news yeah like what yeah well
so i i liked the trent frederick trade for them i was on the i from the get i'm like i don't care
that he's injured this guy's gonna be valuable and he was the thing about the four million eight
year thing is okay so obviously there was a number that trent frederick's camp and i'm saying three
and a half to four million whatever it is that they were like we want to make 24 25 million bucks
on the next contract 3.75 times eight i believe is 30 mil and okay and then there's there is
very few centers on the market right duchesne just re-signed we'll talk about him uh brock
nelson has re-signed sounds like bennett sounds like bennett's gonna re-sign at some point we
all kind of knew that anyway uh so at what point do you go up here the oilers listen
he's their third line center-ish guy who's a bit of a and it's four million bucks and next year
two years from now the cap's gonna be 113 million who cares about two years from now though you got
mcdavid for one more year guaranteed yep yep so do you do it should you do a trent frederick
one-year deal 24 million like this is the thing right there's a chance this works out really
really well but there's also a chance it's luke glendening luke glendening or nikita zaitsev
or pierre engvall or like the logic oh man let's do a comp pierre engvall just stats versus stats
Well, the difference is if you tried to rip off Pierre Engvall's gloves,
it would tear skin off the bone.
And Trent Frederick is looking for a fight.
Like, that's the difference.
I love Trent Frederick.
I have a man crush on his style of play.
He had a terrible injury-plagued season.
Yeah.
He did, and he played through it.
But he had a 40-point year the year before that.
Yes, and a 31 the year before that.
17 goals, 18 goals.
And you know what?
When Engvall signed with the Islanders,
he had a he was coming off a 35 point season with toronto and look at his islanders he went
to the islanders and in the first 18 games he scored nine points oh man hey point a game and
then he had 28 points and then 15 points because patrick why hates him yeah dude engvall oh my god
he was such a you're 65 comparison is closer than people think he's just a way different player yeah
65 230 great skater fast as shit like doesn't he have the hardest shot too like i don't know
about hardest but like he can rip it and just i've never seen a player with this many tools
not put it together like just completely not put it together he's a he's a champion dead zoner
like when he carries a puck across the blue line it's going to a dead zone it's not going to a
scare a scary place on the ice it's going to a place in the ice where the play dies if there
is a wrong path without without the puck if there's a wrong wrong path to take he's gonna
find it like and i'm freaking dog the bounty hunter people like engvall and hall justin hall
that have me questioning some of the some of the people that i used to really oh invest oh well
you guys are going off way out of play on if we don't make every segment you guys are going way
out of play conversation i think like the trent frederick thing i think you nailed it when you
say if this could be an incredible deal or it could be a really bad deal deal like the end
all contract if trent frederick is a dynamic center for this oilers team for all eight years
or the majority of the eight years at four million dollars as the cap's going up that's a great deal
yeah but it is a giant risk you don't give these kinds of contracts to these kinds of players like
there's the logic and oh man if you look at the logic of anything like yeah it might work
the leafs were as adam suggested they were kind of the kings of that for years you're like yep
i see the logic and it's going to work after a while you got to look at the body of evidence
okay do these contracts work with non-star players no overwhelmingly no like basically
the whole 2010s red wings um engvall zeitsev that there was someone on the kings so are you
landing on the frederick contract is a mistake i'm landing on i understand the logic and i'm
actually a little bit more bullish on it than some oilers fans but the majority of these contracts
fail but the the logic is there and that it could work out really well but history isn't on the side
of that i think di pietro could be a starting goalie in the nhl right now for four and a half
million there there was a brief period of time after he signed that deal where i went the
islanders are stupid like a fox this this is gonna be a great freaking deal and he's an analyst and
has been for about a decade is it uh i'm looking for the guy i know exactly who you're talking
about the king's guy that signed for eight years was it kyle clifford or was it andy andrew i don't
even know i don't know i don't remember there was one it was like five years one million dollars
That's a low risk.
Yeah.
That's whatever.
Like, I don't think that's a big deal.
Well, Dustin Brown signed an eight-year extension, but that's different.
He was a star to them.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
And he won two Cubs, the captain.
That's different.

So the NHL is looking into Evander Kane's LTIR status.
And the question became, he got the surgery.
Did he need the surgery?
Could he have come back without the surgery?
And could he have come back quicker?
And the Oilers thought this wasn't a thing anymore.
The NHL investigated at the end of this season.
uh segan notably segan came back with one game to go landis cog had to sit out an extra game
kane had to sit at an extra game and the nhl kachuk matthew kachuk yeah the nhl told them
matthew kachuk's actually injured though uh okay matt uh the nhl told the oilers we are done
conducting this investigation but we reserve the right to revisit it and it seems as though they
are revisiting it and uh the new cba is playing into this because the nhl is basically already
acting like this is done and by the way uh that won't kick in until after next season unless they
have some sort of retroactive clause but the expectation in the new cba is that in the playoffs
you can have as much money on the roster as you want but your in-game lineup will need to be cap
compliant and i think that makes some sense although i think it's super lame because it
keep stars out of the playoffs i don't mind the ltir trickery but if the nhl does then they do
with this evander kane situation i know that the league is not a fan okay just call it what it is
they hate this person and elliot even said i don't like this and a lot of teams have done this
and it seems odd it seems odd that they would do this now and here's the thing is evander kane
going to get punished for it i don't think so i think i think the oilers will i think history and
it's and again like just stuff off the top of my head uh uh factors into this um number one
they hate this person the nhl has had so many issues with this guy and i think he's paying
the evander kane tax well they are the oilers are paying the evander kane tax which is kind of
i mean shitty if you're the oilers um they've already had medical issues with evander kane
the covid card remember and that's what got his contract terminated with san jose i honestly i
think if you gave these guys truth serum or maybe not even truth serum just put a microphone in
front of their face i think they would tell you they're angry someone signed evander kane after
that uh check their emails then oh oh no they got smarter after that i'm sure it's probably
telegram chats yeah um yeah dear dear colin campbell stop now the other thing tracksuit gate
oh in winnipeg yeah evander kane if i remember the story correctly was playing in winnipeg
with an injured shoulder playing with an injured shoulder playing through it like every hockey
player does until they can't no more then tracksuit gate happened bufflin throws his tracks
why does it why does bufflin do that uh kane i think was late to a practice or and he showed
up in a tracksuit and not a suit or something he or he just was his tracksuit showed up did he wet
his suit or the tracksuit no it was his tracksuit but why why was the tracksuit important i think
is it for people like is it was it in what context well you're getting caught up in the
wrong thing okay oh okay sorry i want you to tell the story okay evander kane let's say he showed up
wearing a suit yeah i think he had a track suit in his locker and dustin bufflin said you know
what fuck this guy and he threw his track suit into the shower got it all wet and evander kane
said you know what i've been playing through a painful shoulder surgery for you assholes
it affects me when i play it affects me in my daily life it affects me when i sleep
how many of us does he sleep on that shoulder you know sure it's a painful injury you know what
i'm gonna get surgery i need it anyway i'm just gonna get it and he went and got it
the winnipeg jets traded him to the buffalo sabers uh now that's punishment in the tyler
myers deal um while he recovered from it and the sabers were like well we're not worried about
being good that's okay you take all the time you need and he did that and yeah he was a pain
in the ass for them too and there was the helicopter
story and there's a whole bunch
with Evander Kane but
these guys
play through bullshit
all the time
and I think it's kind
of bullshit that
like what do you think he got cosmetic
like
surgery on a muscle
can I explain the surgeries
because I
Edmonton Oilers fans I don't think the league is coming
down on you they're coming down on
evander kane i think i think you're you're nailing it right now along the right lines of this isn't
evander kane tax so last season in september he had surgery to repair two torn hip adductor muscles
wow two hernias and two torn lower abdominal muscles he got five surgeries that was in
september and they're like okay evander kane has all of these surgeries can i just say
yeah the date of those surgeries is really important yes because i i did have people go
the oilers were super pissed about the fact that he had the surgeries in september and not june or
july oh you went out and you enjoyed your summer is the way it was put to me and then in september
when training camp starts now you're going to get the surgery now i don't know that to be true and
also maybe they were looking at a whole bunch of other options well and then going is there a way
to rehab away through this so i did want to say that yes that that happened with austin matthews
sure he had an injury he's trying to rehab through it and then it became obvious i don't even remember
what season this was it became obvious i'm not going to be able to do it i got to do something
about this yep right so i mean if he made a miscalculation he wouldn't be the first guy
so the the problem with those surgeries and why the nhl is looking into this is that in january
Evander Kane had another surgery and this time it was on his knees or knee I don't know if it was
both or another one but he had another subsequent surgery and then on March 7th they announced that
he would be out for the rest of the season so he had all of those surgeries in September they get
to January they say oh he's getting a little closer to come back they decide that his knee
issue that he's been dealing with let's have another surgery that's going to push you out to
the rest of the season and then after four nations he begins practicing with the team and then he
comes back for the playoffs so the timeline is something that if i'm the nhl why did you push
your knee surgery to the point where you would be out for the rest of the season the only red flag i
see there is you began practicing after the four nations you had a lot of time to come back um that
that is maybe a red flag for me if I'm the league,
but human bodies aren't cars.
Totally.
Like I would love to get like a medical professional.
Like he got those five surgeries.
Should he have also gotten the knee surgeries at the same time?
What if that's a,
that's too much for the human body to cope with?
Like,
I don't know.
I'm not a medical.
That's,
that's what they're looking into.
So you're,
you're asking what the NHL is.
I'm asking what the,
you're asking what the NHL is currently investigating.
When did he get these surgeries?
What is the timeline?
Did they,
purposely or did Evander Kane purposely get these surgeries on this timeline to try and push his
season to the playoffs and he spoke about the knee surgeries like when he got them and when
they announced he was going to be out for the rest of the season he said the knee procedure
was something that we could manage and get that done so it wouldn't affect me when I did come back
and then possibly have to miss the entire season it's great to get this cleaned up and I plan to
be 100% ready to go at some point this season so he they thought it was something he can manage
they decided it's no longer something you can manage let's get this surgery and then he's out
for the rest of the season so i here's here's i want to tell you what's happening they are doing
this because it's evander kane and they can pick on him yes and by the way evander kane has earned
this yes uh he has not earned the benefit of the doubt he hasn't that is valid but i also know that
the nhl is probably not going to do anything here but what this is is them sending a message of just
in case you forgot we did this in the first round now it's the stanley cup final we're going to do
it again we're not going to punish anybody i i doubt they punish anybody and then they and then
it's sort of a message to teams like try this again next year try it again then we're coming
after you okay and i think that that is just the nhl warning other teams i think that's what they
are busy work sending a message nothing's gonna come down there's gonna be no punishment this
story's gonna die on a vine but this is a message through evander kane to the rest of the nhl make
sure your medical stuff is in order
because we're going to come after you if this stuff happens.
All right, let's keep it going. When did Aaron Eckblad
test positive? That's not
the same. What? No, no.
No, no, no, no, no, no. Jesse, this is all
in the interest of fairness.
This is all in the interest of making sure
the league has integrity. Let's investigate
everyone. Like the way
they investigate Evander Kane.
Here's the thing. If you're looking
for fairness and integrity
from the NHL.
Well, it's not a league. But
if they are going to punish
the cries that
you will get like let's say the Oilers get
like you know the Senators got fined a first round pick
right it would never be that but let's just say
Michael Ann Lauer doesn't own the Oilers
they're not going to fine him
hey thanks for giving us a billion dollars also fuck off
Gary's got a vendetta
against that man
poor Michael Ann Lauer
who seems like a great guy
clicking his heels around town
he's probably clicking his heels
because Gary's taking that penalty back
But the the the point I'm trying to make here is that if you if you do punish here, then you open yourself up to having to investigate Mark Stone and Nikita Kucherov, which they're not going to do.
But the NHL hates its own media.
And I say that because, you know, which one's its own media hates its own media partners having to criticize officials and NHL policies.
and the they would force their partners to say hey this is weird and you you see it like they
the guys have to kind of walk a bit of a tightrope right and and so i feel like it's like you know
all of us online they can ignore us they don't care but those guys who have like legitimate jobs
in tv and radio and uh and newsprint according to the nhl i think there's nothing illegitimate about
creating a digital network obviously um those guys have to walk a bit of a finer line
and I do feel like there is a scenario where the NHL goes if we punish this guy as much as we want
to get Evander Kane again ah if we do this then everybody is going to ask us about Mark Stone and
Nikita Kucherov and whoever else you want to bring up and and also let's talk about Gabriel
landis kog a little bit let's talk about maybe okay maybe gabriel landis kog does oh it's just
it just happened to line up that in april gabriel landis kog was good to come back after two years
okay now at very what about tyler sagan at very where was tyler sagan at the trade deadline at
very least with uh landis kog like he did the whole rehabilitation stint totally he hadn't
played in three years like i landis kog i can believe you are no but it just happens to line
up with april it's super convenient oh let's sure is all right marion host's contract i know yeah
and that's that's why there's gonna be no punishment that's why i think that's why like
it's you're we're getting into the weeds by going through the other issues because this is gonna
wash away it's just they want to send a message that just have your medicals cleared and the the
aaron akblad thing just that's not a thing because aaron akblad was suspended for peds after the
trade deadline like what i want to know is when they knew no but they didn't utilize his cap space
so like that doesn't make sense what what would they have known because he was gonna piss hot
yeah but then then what well then you could if you knew if you knew before the trade deadline
do you make the seth jones trade no but the seth jones trade is made because aaron ackblad's
leaving right and you're getting this contract it's not like there was an advantage to acquire
seth jones because there was more cap space because he wasn't on the roster or anything
like that he was suspended after the trade deadline there was no like cap utilization for
three days after the trade deadline yes no but i'm talking about the cap in specifically like
yeah or any not having him on the roster or anything like that there's there's no way to
know that was already on ltir yeah there's there's no there's no competitive advantage there for the
for the panthers to have aaron eckblad suspended unless you're talking about him getting 20 games
off which is another thing
entire 20 games off and everyone's like
oh yeah well it's not an injury and then they won't
say what he's actually out with I'm
not no no I'm talking about the 20 games off with the
suspension no no I know I'm not
uh the league
is not giving Evander Kane the benefit of the doubt
that is because Evander Kane
super-dee-duper does not
deserve the benefit of the doubt in
the same way that the NHL does not deserve
the benefit of the doubt from any of us
I will never let this go until
the day i die colin campbell is still employed by the nhl he was caught in emails trying to
influence the outcome of hockey games and which is worse than betting in my in my view yes oh my
god like if you bet on a hockey game that's less bad than what colin campbell did colin campbell
is in the hockey hall of fame for way worse shit than what shane pinto did and that guy was
suspended half a season oh yeah yep and so forgive me i'm a little skeptical that uh timelines are a
little sketchy here sure i do want to say that evander kane is already out there tweeting uh
there was some jet stuff never a good idea i guess jets at noon tweeted some stuff about evander
kane's attitude or something like that and then yeah and then uh which is a show in winnipeg oh
on 680 CJOB and then
Evander Kane said well there's five
misleading things in this and none of this is true
and this guy's a hater and
it looks objectively like he might
be correct in this instance
but don't just
when in doubt don't tweet that's our rule
I agree with you that
no one in the NHL
head office should be trusted
from Gary and all of his minions nobody should
be trusted I believe basically any conspiracy theory
you have about the NHL because
I've seen worse they have been caught
doing terrible things and then when confronted about it did nothing and got snooty about even
being asked you couldn't make a reddit thread that resembles the real thing that happened with
colin campbell's emails yes like that is a conspiracy theory that's just real life that
he did it wouldn't pass as a script for a uh like a terrible movie yeah like you couldn't
My son's getting too many penalties.
If somebody's random numbers, Twitter, John82222 tweeted that,
oh, a guy who's in the NHL head office is trying to get penalties away from his son.
Nobody would believe that.
You'd scroll past it.
You're just being salty.
You're just being a hater.
You're just being a...
He's in the Hall of Fame.
So weird that his kid's team has gone to three straight Cups.
Man, that's crazy.
That's crazy.
Wait, he was the head of player safety?
That's crazy.
That's crazy.
right so steven if you're coming from the perspective like oh he was suspended and
they're cheating like i guess like i guess that's a fair argument that you just don't
trust them and they're well no no they're all about due process when it comes to people they
don't like but around the league dude like you said the kudrow stuff the stone stuff the this
and that and that and that by the way i oh screw evander what i have to be honest with you i am
on your side more than
Jesse is when it comes to the Ekblad stuff
I think they absolutely knew when he was getting
suspended. I think they knew a week in advance
How does that help?
Because it makes well first off
Ekblad's contract is expiring I think you make a great
point but I do think if you lean
more into a trade
like that knowing that that's going to happen
I think you do
I think you do
It's my opinion I can't prove that
That's just how I feel
I'm just saying what I would do if I was a general
manager I would try to find I would do what Lou Lamorello did try to find your way around every
effing rule out there or is that a rule well where are the blind spots in that rule cool let's exploit
that that's what you should do I think Bill Zito did that and I don't disrespect him for that I
think that's a great thing you wouldn't believe the stuff I've seen behind the scenes and you
wouldn't believe the people within teams but oh how could that person think they have an influence
like trying to get guys suspended in the middle of the playoffs like you wouldn't believe play
fair what are we talking about if you're not cheating you're not trying and the florida
panthers try harder than anyone in the league yeah right so so my thing with the suspension is that
like on paper there's no competitive advantage they gained in terms of like salary cap or
not having the guy like whether you want to debate whether eckblad got that time off and
got an advantage that way i'm like yeah he probably did he did like that that's whatever
but those are those are the rules like it sucks that it's only 20 games that happen out of that
timeline but we can't know either way like if who's right or wrong on whether they would have
made the seth jones trade if he was suspended or not because they could have made that trade
whether he was suspended or if he was suspended like and they made it before the suspension so
who knows what would have happened there i'm gonna i'm gonna throw something out there we can't know
that that that just makes sense to me uh if you were suspended for using performance enhancing
drugs that means you played using performance enhancing drugs yes that dude scored goals
got assists laid hits damaged his opponents with performance enhancing drugs in his system
i think if you have a player on your team who gets caught using performance enhancing drugs
yes they should be suspended for that amount of games you should also be docked points in
the standings 100 the points you got in the standings are ill-gotten goods you had a person
in your lineup under performance enhancing what is the argument against how many
i don't know that's a great question that's a great question i don't want to be the one making
that call i'll tell you that five pay me enough to be i don't think how many points are we docking
them i don't think the suspension was enough i don't think 20 games is a is a fair suspension
for somebody who's literally cheating the game shane pinto's whatever happened with shane pinto
he didn't bet on those games it was someone else he was an idiot and gave somebody his log yeah
and freaking and then the nhl loves to hammer guys who are just idiots yeah yeah don't you do
pay a stupid check and then by the way no one out there is going to agree with me at all on
the ekblad stuff because the the panthers fans the par of the course is just hate on the panthers
like that's everybody's on your side right now they should be by the way they should be hated
on and because they're winners winners need to be hated how about this how about this before
aaron eckblad was suspended he was on a six game point streak yeah i think this guy's in the best
shape of his life aaron eckblad should not have played a single game in the stanley cup final
the suspension should have been you're done till next year you cheated and literally cheated our
game 23 minutes and seven seconds on performance enhancers 25 minutes and 37 seconds on performance
enhancers yeah 21 minutes and 17 seconds on performances i keep 25 24 23 and there's just
nothing yeah no i yeah yeah sorry i i 100 agree and it helps that the dude's son works in how
and works in for the panthers i would love to know i would love to know uh because most most
steroids uh if you would you know most steroids are five to nine hours before they leave your
system right so like it's like real quick um some of them are like longer a few days uh i would love
to know what the effects of building up that muscle how long that lasts well right because
i feel like it would be a couple months at least it's been said that today it's not a uh it's not
a piss test or a blood test or whatever it's it's a it's a iq test because like it's just so easy to
hide yeah now um and some guys are not smart enough john jones um to not get caught and when
they do they say it's tainted beef canelo alvarez and guys still get caught but i i think uh there's
plenty of guys out there who are on this stuff to to explain that on how it's an iq test i believe
this is how it works but it's you get two no notice drug tests between training camp and the
playoffs they do it in the ohl too i've seen it oh yeah yeah when i work for the steelheads
this guy comes off the ice woo big win oh come into the room oh wow so so you so for nhlers you
get two no notice as an individual from the start of training camp to the start of playoffs and then
you get two no notice as a team uh for that same time period so if you go through those four drug
tests and let's say all of your no notice ones are out you're done by like march you're good
yeah you're good until the playoffs when they have no notice tests throughout the playoffs for random
players um but if you're if you want to cheat the game and you got all of your drug tests out by
december they don't test you anymore because they're not allowed to on the cba to test you
more than those four times and you know what let's be honest they don't want to test you
they don't want the ekblad thing was like a guys guys hello hello please don't test positive for
this we don't want to suspend you they don't want to now here's what complicates things a little bit
this upcoming season the olympics yes that's where we're gonna have a lot of fit and nhl players
oh man looking slim and trim he's down 10 pounds drug tests these days in the nhl the way their
rules are it's are you stupid yeah like don't get caught and they're not going to be caught somehow
are you dumb or stupid like all that all that to say and i will just come out and say it
even if it is bullshit and kind of cheating yeah from evander kane i don't care yeah until you care
about the rest of them that are obviously
doing the same thing. Can I just check?
How does it feel to have a full diaper, Steve?
It's actually
pretty freeing. I'm letting it hang
off the back of my chair. What's it like to have Panthers living
rent-free in your head? Man, it's such a
good chirp, right? It's so good. I 100%
agree with that Evander Kane thing. Just fucking
leave it. Yeah, they're going to leave it. Now, Eric
Robinson, 32 points in 82 games, has
re-signed a four-year extension with
the Canes, $1.7 million. That's
pretty good value. That is
700 grand less than david kopf oh remember i'm always about the leaves he was a good
acquisition for them he was was he not with the blue jackets and i want to say he had he was like
making too much and something his career sort of arrested development and it was revived by the
hurricanes jonathan tase has also re-signed right before the show started signed uh sorry signed
exactly uh contract this is with the winnipeg jet includes a two minute two million dollars
base salary and cj has said basically the way to look at this is if jonathan tase is healthy
he's a 5.25 million dollar player oh my god wow what yeah wow so so here it is you get 550k each
for 20 30 40 50 and 60 games played 500k if the jets make the playoffs and tase plays 50 games
250k each round one two and three uh if they win them with tase playing at least 50 of those games
and a million dollar bonus with Tays playing 50% of those games
if they win the Cup.
So if the Jets win the Stanley Cup, he plays 50% of the games
and he plays at least 60, it's 5.25.
But otherwise, it's likely far less.
Yeah.
Dude, if it's 5.25 and they win the Cup,
like who gives a good gosh darn?
If they go over the cap, who cares?
This cap's going up.
Doesn't matter.
The 550K at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 games played,
that's going to add up quick.
Yeah, that's what I mean.
yeah that's yeah but it's it's not a foregone conclusion oh totally totally yeah player again
like it's it's not like landis kog landis kog was working with the avalanche for the whole
three-year process taves like is he even going to begin the season with the jets like i he's
coming to training so he's he's going to training camp but like would he even be eligible for a
conditioning stint with like the man it's not moose no he doesn't need any of that so hold on
how do you know if tase plays 50 or 60 games if he plays 60 games and the jets make the playoffs
he's 5.25 oh that's what it is that's i just did some quick ad um so i mean listen it might be
incredible yeah but that's a big leap of faith that's a there are there are guys who have been
playing well. Dude, Matt Duchesne has been
in the league this whole time. He's coming off
an 80-plus point season.
He's, I think, the
no, he's younger than
Taves, and that dude's making four
and a half.
It's a leap of faith. If the Winnipeg
Jets win the Stanley Cup,
or is it go to the Stanley Cup or win it?
I think it's win it. He's a $7 million
player.
That's shit. That's ridiculous.
What the hell are they doing?
next year next year if we're sitting in this sport check studio here at manly square and
the jets are winners you're gonna be like good for them good for them smart it actually doesn't
mean anything if you win the stanley best story shoo-in for the masterton yeah give him the
conspice man give him the heart whatever signs with his hometown no ignore me like if you win
the cup like who cares yeah yeah but i've also i've met him once he's very nice very very nice
guy really really liked him did you read his gq feature i did yeah it's pretty good it was i think
i i uh i respect the you know the whole thing about trying to find different answers after
exhausting all of yours i'm always skeptical of people that are like oh you need to do your own
research on aaron rogers uh oh it's a good thing we don't do an nfl podcast because i would have
cracked out on it uh i literally just texted adam i'm like adam i'm so sorry about your stupid
football team i didn't that was all i said he goes no they didn't they signed rogers i'm like
adam i'm so sorry i was hoping he would just be like no i don't want to play there like i was
hoping they get spurned they save them from themselves please adam nine and eight seasons
he's gonna play two or three so shitty games and then that'll be no you were making a point about
the gq future i respect the fact that he worked so i think for me it's that he worked so hard
because to get back and he wanted it like it really did look like this was it and oh and i
feel like just the fact that he puts on a jersey and plays next year what a victory that's really
cool that's all i want to say i think i like however it is you find your way back um and he
doesn't like spurn western medicine he's not like doctors are trying to kill you he's just like hey
there might be another option here on top of what i'm already trying because this shit is weird
he's got a weird condition man yes and so i mean listen back problems right have you ever gotten
acupuncture with the like the little electricity in it that's that's not western medicine yeah and
they and they poke it right into your ass cheeks and you're laying face down on the table there is
a moment where you go how did i get here yeah i've had that done too that with the electric
they they yeah acupuncture with electric shock and then they make your muscles like it's almost
annoying that it works yeah you're like oh man really this is the answer i'll have to do it
again now i gotta do it again yeah now i there are a few other signings we're gonna get to but
But I want to shift focus, guys, to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a second.
Hell yeah.
Because we really ignored a big story on purpose last episode.
And I just thought, let's save that because it'll still be a story on Friday.
Sure enough, it is.
And we also have way too many fun things to talk about with the Edmonton and Florida game.
and that is the mitch marner conversation about how this deal might not get done july 1st so the
rumor out there just for anybody that doesn't know is that mitch marner might in some some people
would call this dragging it out some people would call it doing their due diligence that july 1st
the marner camp's going to get a bunch of offers and they're going to say okay we like city a city
city c and maybe more we need to take the time marner and his young family yep to go to those
cities check out the facilities and then make a call a la like lebron james the decision remember
they had like a whole espn special and we did touch on we did talk about we did talk about
yeah when it when it came out on 32 thoughts the podcast we did the next day we chatted about how
he's gonna uh john tavarez thing yes remember yeah and that was how he had everybody come to him but
this time he'll go to them but we didn't say it was going to go 15 days yes they were saying that
so the news is it could be mid-july so frege said i wonder what cj said on the cj show i still don't
know but frege said listen the issue becomes if you do that good plan but one of your favorites
might come in and go you got till six o'clock tonight we can't wait for you and i think that
people are like well mitch marner's gonna hold up the market i actually think with the toronto
maple leafs moving on that and they are uh that the opportunity to get someone else if marner
holds the market is huge oh yeah right and i look at this and i i want to quote one of my favorite
guys who writes about the leafs is anthony petrelli from maple leafs hot stove i love it
always been very good and i've been i've been trying to pound this drum a little bit on the
show and I'm so glad he said it I mean this is a guy that broke the Tavares news so he's got a
little more credibility yes he did uh he said the first idea that the Leafs must replace Marner's
100 points shouldn't be the concept because what people keep saying is well you can't replace Mitch
but what you can do your favorite movie Moneyball replace them in the aggregate
can you find three guys that score 55 points sure you can and he said the loss of a star
forward will impact the Leafs over an 82 game series or season knowing Marner could win them
a random game in November to collect valuable points in the standings absolutely losing Marner
for free sucks there's no way around it but an opportunity now emerges because he was already
making a ton of money the Leafs aren't losing a star who was underpaid and will now somehow need
to replace to stay cap compliant they are losing a star who makes substantial money and they now
have the cap space available available to fill multiple holes now anthony goes into uh this is
a three-part series which he hasn't completed yet but he goes into the areas that you know that the
leafs are gonna have a hard time with special teams gonna be bad right you gotta you gotta
replace you gotta figure out who's running point on the power play maybe morgan riley becomes
valuable in that spot again first pk first pp you're gonna need a first pk as well yeah say pp
again pp it's good it's all right feels good it's like the mcdavid my point is my point is
we i want people to reframe this in their head this idea that they're gonna run it back
first off it's dead i just i just want to tell you it ain't happening he's not coming back i
haven't really your dog has is not coming home you can put up as many posters as you want oh my he's
gone he's gone i'm wild lost dog please return if found no lost mitch is lost he's gone he gone
now can you get can you adopt another dog maybe a few we also learn nothing from the vegas
experience huh what's that well like there are guys who just because they haven't uh done it in
the nhl before does not mean they can't like there are guys like william carlson yeah guy in
columbus 40 goals that's a great one like there are guys who have only played on the fourth line
can play on the third only guys who have played on the third line can play on the second elite
and third liners you might say elite i just don't think that's a thing i don't believe in the
concept can i say that the only we haven't talked to justin bourne in a really long time he was on
the show years ago the only thing i want to ask him is when he said he tweeted out wow the guy
that let william carlson go in columbus should be fired and the guy who let him go tweeted at
justin and then deleted his twitter account i want to ask him about that interaction i feel like i've
talked to justin really recently but it's because i listened to his book oh okay there you go so i
think that is how the Leafs need to look at this and that's why you know you say Jonas Siegel put
out an article I think Anthony Petrelli is going to follow up on his big names you can sign and
under the radar names you can sign and Jonas Siegel had names like I hate this one Anthony
Bevilier because Anthony Bevilier has been a suitcase and never worked out anywhere until
you put him on a first line well in Washington well okay oh wow you man that's so great you
looked good next to Ovi and Dylan Strom that's awesome I guess what's confusing to me about him
is why is he a suit?
Well, exactly.
And I don't want that
on the Leafs.
A guy I am interested in
from the Capitals
is Andrew Mangiapane.
Brad Mann.
That's interesting.
I am interested in that player.
What do you,
what's going on with you?
Your career got a lot better
in conferences.
What are you going to do
when they sign Bavillier?
What are you going to do?
I'm going to turn into
his biggest fan.
I'm going to be like,
man, this is Alex Kerfoot 2.0.
I hope you all are ready.
No.
I think Brad,
what do you mean no?
Bavillier is a busy nothing.
no come on and i i loved him in the my new favorite player yeah pavilion yeah stop i'm
gonna do it just to annoy you know how bad i want a mason marchman to be a leaf just because of how
much drew hates him it would have been great matt duchesne to be a leaf because i think brad
true living is going to look at that free agent pool of players and say i have to do my work in
the trade yeah uh trade market like his because like we'll get to the matt duchesne stuff like
slowly guys are just coming off the board and it looks pretty depressing out there and i feel like
brad's in enough trade rumors and he's done enough big deals in his career that he's gonna go
that route to try and get the guys to fill out the leafs team so that is a great point jesse
and that brings me to what what do you trade people are like well the prospect coverage bear
it is bear so i want hockey trades of the guys on the team yeah tell me how a dna change doesn't
mean somebody on the roster and that brings me back to my favorite guy who needs to move on from
the dna people are talking about well if tavaris doesn't sign is this then we got a dna change
coming that guy had 38 goals guys yeah i know he wasn't spectacular towards the end of the playoffs
none of them were but 38 goals uh morgan riley's the guy that you want dna change morgan riley's
the dna can i give you something morgan riley is kyle dubas's dude by the way he is his dude
he signed him he's like i can't when he signed morgan riley because he loves morgan because more
babcock left the only player he shouted out was morgan riley dubas signed morgan riley to an
extension a few years later and was like i we could not be happier to have this guy in our in
our in our in our lineup in our dressing room he's a great guy and nobody ever disputes that
but if you were talking about a player who probably does have a little bit of value because
of how he performs in the playoffs he does well in the playoffs not in game seven doesn't have
You're right.
Doesn't have...
He scored in Game 7 in 2022.
Anyway.
Doesn't have much of a role in Berube's system.
At least last year, didn't.
Doesn't kill penalties.
Was playing 20 or 30 seconds a night on PP2
with Oliver Ekman-Larsen.
That, to me, you start with guys like that.
Did Dave Nonas not draft Morgan Rielly?
It was Brian Burke.
So I was about to say to Adam,
Morgan Rielly has had five GMs in Toronto.
Dubas was his fourth.
that's crazy that is work known as lou then kyle and i now it's brad i always welcome
morgan riley back i will always have a strong affection for the man and all the great memories
he's brought but if we are talking about a dna change we are talking about a guy like that can
i make you so damn mad and chris and by the way chris johnson said hey you know those no trade
no-move clauses, those are just kind of
there. If the team wants to move
on, they'll find a way. And this is where I ask
the Leafs to be a little bit ruthless.
Not a little bit, a lot ruthless.
You gotta make people mad.
Can I make you completely furious? Please, please, give it to me.
Here's what
I'm starting to warm up to. Carl O'Reilly for
a whole year? Uh-uh.
You're
gonna hate it. Actually, if you
say what I think you're gonna say, I've been
thinking about something this morning that might even
be crazier. But go ahead.
There's no goalies available.
Kevin Pappetti has floated that.
That's stupid.
That's your strength.
You do not deal from a strength.
And I love Kevin, by the way.
I think I agree.
That's not you.
I think I agree.
I love turning on a Leaf game and going, ah, and not worrying about who's in net.
Both of them are injury prone.
No.
That is, yes.
And I love you, Kevin.
That's not a shot at you.
It's one of the things I enjoyed the most about this past season is turning on a Leaf game.
you don't have to worry nothing pissed me off more i i was driving i had to listen to like a
handful of games on the radio this year because of the book tour i'm driving home and it's the
first minute of a game against buffalo and he'll to be got scored on in the first minute and i was
just like uh but the other like 75 games of the season ah you have a chance to win every single
night let me just no be a nut job for a second you're not gonna get anything what do you what if
let me just be a nut let me be a complete nut it's stole ours one year of stole ours
for skinner plus what are you getting from the oilers i don't know mcdavid okay well okay mcdavid
there it is mcdavid i think straight up makes a lot of sense yeah no you need to actually the
Oilers have to sweeten the pot.
Yeah, we want Hyman back.
Listen, I'm just getting a little nuts
because there's like three goalies available.
One of them you're going to have to offer sheet.
And if you don't get any of them, what do you do?
They love Matt Murray.
They weirdly love Matt Murray.
I wonder if they could look at him as the backup.
God, no.
I think he's a good AHL guy.
I'm trying to help your idea.
I don't believe this.
i think you said trade stallers you can't do it you can't do that until you've got art or act
him off ready uh he's older than people think i don't think people realize how old yeah but like
even act him off like four yeah he's 40 act him off fell off a little bit after a really hot start
listen that's what i'm he has to be ready if you're if you're getting creative with this team
i think you have to look at everything everything includes goalies i don't love it i think you're
looking at dna change is morgan riley the best player from the 2012 draft philip forsberg yeah
philip you're taking philip for all day is morgan riley the second best player from the 2012 draft
he's certainly top five when burke said i would have taken him first after he picked him fifth
a lot of people were like yeah yeah yeah he was right no look at the who are the four guys drafted
ahead of riley uh i will wow so the sort i'll give you the four four guys that are ahead of him
three guys ahead of him in points forsberg hurdle teravinen that's it three forwards yeah 2012
he's a defender 2012 draft went yakupov ryan murray alex gilchenyuk griffin reinhardt morgan
riley riley was the third defenseman that's nice in terms of games played if we sort that way
Morgan Riley is number one amongst players from the 2012 draft.
Cody Cece is two.
Tom Wilson is three.
Jacob Truba, four.
Hurdle, five.
Damon Severson, six.
Forsberg comes in at seven in terms of games played.
There's some really good picks.
Hampus Lindholm went the pick after Riley.
Yeah.
Not a great draft.
That's what I'm saying.
No, dude, it's terrible.
Yeah.
He did a great job selecting Morgan Riley.
And that's why I'm looking at...
Probably the second best pick?
Maybe Hurdle.
this draft uh in 2025 is so chaotic because the projected first overall pick in matthew schaefer
played i think it's the exact same amount of games morgan riley did in his draft year riley
played 17 games i remember when the leafs picked him i stayed up till like three in the morning i
was in scotland and oh well they got the fifth overall pick i gotta see who it is and i see
they picked the defenseman who played less than 20 games busted knee and i was heartbroken i was
like what a stupid team and turns out he's awesome or was yeah it turns out he's the second
third best pick at worst third best pick of the entire you couldn't you couldn't have really done
much better no then you did unless you're getting forsberg or maybe hurdle or tom wilson you know
like and even then we're like you probably want more to rally yeah yeah yeah anyway i just think
we gotta like if we've worked if we're and again i think this coming year is a step back year
I think you step back.
I think you are.
In the regular season.
Yeah, sure, in the regular season.
And you see what you get out of them in the playoffs.
You have to make the playoffs.
But if the Leafs are a wildcard team next year,
it won't surprise me.
With that decor and that goaltending,
you'd have to actively try, I think, to miss the playoffs.
A hundred percent.
So that's why you don't trade the goaltender.
Right.
Just to clean up this conversation
before the comment section yells at us,
correct answer out of all of that,
Andrzej Wasilewski.
Oh, shit!
When was he picked?
I was sorting by, like, games played and goals and points,
and he didn't come up at the top because he's a goaltender.
Andre Vasilevsky was selected 19th overall in the 2012 draft.
He wins.
He wins.
He's the best pick from the 2012 draft.
Any goalies ahead of him?
No.
I know Malcolm Subban, I think, was in this draft.
He was a first-rounder, but he was picked after.
Yeah, 24th overall.
Vasilevsky was the first goalie off the board, 19th.
He wins.
Oh, heavens.
just just before all the comments correct us uh he wins cool all right wow one hard hard one
yes so and then everyone else so uh the other leafs news out there is obviously tabaris the
leafs want to do a tanev style deal with him okay uh what has apparently muddied the water a little
bit is that a guy that scored 12 less goals than him brock nelson got three years at seven and a
half well and then there's matt duchesne who signed four years at four and a half and which
is well below i think what matt duchesne's value is but he liked dallas but matt duchesne is also
still making money from nashville yes because he was bought out yeah so like his deal 12 and a
half million in real dollars this season it's stupid wow he's like he's okay he's flush with
he can buy so many country music albums with that he can buy a country bar he can get zach
brian to play in his backyard i saw yesterday um he has a custom hockey stick with like guitar
strings on it and my first i had two thoughts at the exact same time uh one hey that's pretty cool
two man he must get chirped to shit for that dude if i was in a playoff series that would be every
single time i was on the ice with him i think you can do better nice lame stick no you can do better
than that he's such a stick nerd duchesne oh yeah you could definitely there's some other things
you probably go oh yeah and i'm sure he's heard them since he was a kid you know what he hasn't
had since he was a kid a custom guitar string hockey stick oh my god marsh and what i had a
field day with that's true i i had no idea that was news when you when you sent that picture i
had no idea he had i didn't either it was uh i think pete blackburn posted it play me a tune
play me a tune matt on yours play me a tune like oh just every shift all over him uh yeah so
tavaris the tavaris deal is not done the other deal that's not done is matthew nye's now there
was a report out there i think was nick alberga had it where he said that you know that both sides
are pretty far apart i'll admit that i also heard an outrageous number kipper had it too in the star
yeah i i have to say when you get into negotiations like this what was the number in the star did he
have a number in the star no kipper had that they were very far apart in negotiations he wrote that
and and i mean it kind of makes sense you're far apart in negotiations until you're not
And and hey, listen, if we all want Matthew Nyes at seven, seven and a half, eight, whatever your number is at over an eight year contract, his camp's going to start at like three or four million above that.
And and the Leafs are going to start at like three or four million below that.
And then they will slowly inch their way to whatever.
And what here's the thing, the lack of real deadlines here has, you know, it doesn't unless he's an RFA.
yeah there's so there's no real deadline here to push either side to make a decision and he's not
an rfa candidate in the slightest no listen if he offers somebody said uh yeah an offer sheet rfa
can yeah i think frank's are falling through like a crazy number like 11 million over seven or
something like that and if yeah for nice if that happened like i'm not even gonna happen but if
that happened yeah you just kind of go all right we'll see you like i don't i don't know how and
When I hear that number, I say, sure, that's how negotiations work.
Sure, me too.
To my point in this, don't get freaked out about it.
It's June 20th.
Yeah.
Don't be worried about Matthew Nye signing a contract.
There's so much time.
I'm going to talk to Leaf fans.
It's time you stop being so friendly.
Us against the world, there are people planting information to try to hurt the Leafs.
Absolutely.
Yes.
100%.
Us against the world, no one likes you.
No one is going to like you.
Just look at it that way from now on.
They're free clicks.
is just throw out a percent throw out your thing include the leafs you get clicks yep yep and
people use that all the time what article are you more likely to click matthew nize is going to sign
a team-friendly three-year deal matthew nize is never coming back again matthew nize is never
coming back again he's gonna sign for more than marner i do want to say you're gonna click that
one you're clicking that one do that again i hope they figure out how to spell more more than
marner no agents are out there planting bullshit can you can you do mitch and marner
oh at the same time
that's good that's impressive stuff thank you
of the utah yeah so that's barely anything uh it's it's just mth
the uh my head hurts the matthew nye's thing it doesn't look comfy it's not remember the most
likely outcome here is the boring one which is he resigns with the leafs uh now he's got to be
careful because when you is that toronto every city's got its characteristics toronto doesn't
have a problem with people making their money toronto has a problem with people who make more
than 10 million dollars saying they're underpaid and undervalued toronto is very you know like
Philadelphia's got its characteristics.
Boston's got its characteristics.
New York, Miami, everybody's got their,
LA's got their characteristics.
Toronto's got a very practical streak
and a pragmatic streak.
You're exceptional at this.
You're one of the best in the world.
You should get paid like it.
But then don't tell me,
and this is where you lose Torontonians.
Don't tell me that you're undervalued or underpaid
because I don't believe that and I resent that
and I will react negatively to that.
Matthew Nyes has got to understand
whatever contract he signs,
that first off, that has to be the end of it.
Shut up about it afterwards.
And I think he's got different people.
The second thing has got to be,
you better perform.
We do expect that if you're going to eat
that much of the cap up,
like Matthew Nyes isn't our sweet,
he's not our sweet boy anymore.
Once this deal is signed,
he is now, you better frigging perform, dude.
Oh, William Nylander's lack of,
effort on some goals against were a lot less cute this season and of course yeah and he was an elite
offensive performer which was second in the nhl in goals yeah and that was euphoric when he was
making 6.9 this is his uh first year of 11.5 and he lived up to it most nights and the nights he
didn't you're like whoa what do we pay you for matt no it's it's it's it is a burden so matthew
will have a little bit of that and austin matthews i think if so you know i think that i feel like
the marner camp and i think in a certain way they have a point people were harder on mitch when he
underperformed than they were on austin and part of that because of them the call is coming from
inside the house no i just want to i just want to say that i hate his people holy shit
when was your last good day finish the point let me like oh everything's
Can I finish the point?
Yeah, sorry.
Go ahead.
Go ahead.
My point is they put themselves out there in 2019
and caused themselves to be a lightning rod for that.
Not because Mitch is leaving,
but I already sense a little bit of consternation
about how the Matthews injury, whatever it is, was handled.
Okay, so you're going to be healthy after this summer
when you sit out four months,
but you couldn't have sat out four months during the regular season
and then just got healthy for the playoffs.
So who's upset about that?
Oh, there are fans that are – I sense a little bit of that.
And I think that that will be under the microscope next year as well
when the season starts.
I think those are storylines to watch.
Yeah.
You can leave Mitch in the rear view.
He's gone.
He's gone.
No, no, no, no, no.
Listen.
No, I have to say this.
Go ahead.
I have to say this.
Marner's reputation in the city was that of a care bear.
We loved this guy.
loved him what caused fans to fall out of love with him the the way the contract negotiations
were held the playoff performances and how we faded as series went on that took a long time
it took a long time for us to notice and be like hey
that's bad it to me it didn't really start until 2021 montreal montreal you know the columbus
most people were like dude it's the it's the bubble i get it he had a couple big performances
in 2019 i don't get it but but yeah no yeah i mean but he was he did have big performances
in those series leading up to that you're right and it didn't really become a thing until 2021
what became a thing before that in 2019 was his camp and his camp this and his agent this on the
day matthew signs his contract you prick and his camp this and his camp that and now there's this
thing uh oh uh i think it was tsn uh there's a thought out there that his camp feels disrespected
it's never about mitch never about that guy i've i used to say i don't say this anymore because
unfortunately it's not true but i used to say i've never heard anyone say a bad thing about
mitch marner i've never heard anyone say a good thing about his camp it's your fault
that this kid has the reputation he does it's your fault and you'll never wear it and you'll
never take um well because you're not you don't have to wear it he has to wear it he has to wear
it it'll never come back to darren it'll never come back to the other guys yeah some of the
goofballs he has around him and at the end of the day you are a grown-up and i guess you're
responsible for the people around you but i do to a degree feel bad for this guy i i really really
do because some of the people around him suck so much ass oh my god i'm like his camp is mad about
this and that and that you never hear mitch is mad about you never hear mitch is mad about that's
what i'm so upset about but unfortunately you got to get rid of one to get rid of the other
yep good riddance to the lot of you so anyway with the leafs i look at this and i go okay
they're gonna they have an opportunity here we started this segment with if marner holds up
the market or holds it up i don't actually don't think he will hold up the market i think he'll
hold up a few teams maybe a bit but everybody else will be like yeah well nick ehlers is not
going to not sign. Somebody's going to offer Nick
Ewing a ton of money. Somebody's going to offer Brock
Besser a ton of money.
There's going to be a free agent forever.
Yeah, we're going to wait until July
15th so Mitch can make his call and then
I'll make mine. To me, it's two-pronged.
It is two-pronged.
Marner, I think, is a factor. McDavid's
extension, I think, is a factor, even though he's not a free
agent until next year. I said it last show. You better be
prepared. If he is a free
agent next year, you better have room.
What do you think? These UFAs are
signing multi...
Your deals, right?
You don't want to not get McDavid
because you tied up earlers for too long.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, it's true.
It's a thing that they got to think about.
So I just want to say this.
I think if the Mitch Marner thing
does play out to mid-July,
forget the Toronto reaction of it.
If your team is held up by this guy
and he ultimately doesn't sign with you,
are you mad at him
or are you mad at your management
for going along with it?
No, that's on you.
That's yourself.
I think you got to be mad at yourself.
Yeah, yeah.
Which is why I don't think it will be held up until July 15th because nobody's stupid enough to do that.
Because it takes a lot of salary cap space to sign Mitch Marner.
He wants a lot of money.
So you're not going to sit there with $14 free million and not spend it if you're a GM on July 10th.
Yeah.
Especially if you're like the third of three.
What am I talking about July 10th?
July 3rd.
July 2nd, Jess.
Yeah, they're going to spend the money.
Here's my other question.
Here's my other question, boys.
No, no, I'm paying attention.
This is important.
Because you sometimes ask a question, and I guess you're looking something up.
No, no.
How many games has Mitch played in the NHL?
A lot.
600?
700?
Yeah.
What arena hasn't he been to?
Utah?
Okay.
What city hasn't he been to?
He's played in Utah.
No, he's played in Utah.
You're going to say all of them.
He's played in all of them.
So my question to him, if I'm a GM trying to court him, is, Mitch, what do you need to know?
Because you've been here a few times.
Totally.
This is the other thing about that tour that doesn't make sense.
It's like, yo, I've been to San Jose.
I went to San Jose.
I saw the Tech CU Arena where they do all their practicing
and where the Barracuda play.
I saw SAP Center where the arena is.
You've seen everywhere.
Uh-huh.
So that, to me, feels like that's a plan we would like to happen.
The management group would like that to happen.
I don't think that's going to happen.
Yeah, I think there's a pie-in-the-sky scenario for Marner and his people
where they get to do that.
I assume they want to do
like the non-hockey thing
because there's certain things
he can talk to GMs
where it's not tampering.
Like now that he's the UFA,
they can talk openly
about everything.
He wants to see maybe
the housing market and schools
and have the people
of the local area
and the GMs in the front office
of offices court him
to live in that city
and be a part of those teams.
So I understand that.
I don't think he's going
to have enough time
to do all of that
and he'll probably get done
within five days of July 1st.
There was a guy
who wanted to fly
to my favorite cities right now.
Sure.
Just on vacation.
Do it now.
No, he's got a newborn.
Okay.
He's got a newborn.
Well, you still have a newborn in July.
Yeah.
So if you really want to do the tour, do it now.
Yeah, and I'm sure he is, and he's doing his due diligence and all that.
I don't think this is all that complicated.
Let me throw this out there.
Okay.
There was a Hart Trophy winner who was considered one of the biggest free agents, if not the
biggest free agent, the year he was a free agent.
and it looked like he was going to sign a big deal.
I think it was going to be 8 million times 4
with the Nashville Predators.
It's crazy money.
He ended up signing a one-year deal.
Taylor Hall.
Taylor Hall.
You're never going to believe in a million years
who his agent is.
Theron Ferris.
Yep.
We're about to find out if he learned anything.
Okay, a couple other things.
Noah Dobson's name has been out there.
Probably not.
Matthew Darsh is testing the market on him
because he could be an eight-figure guy.
That's the quote this morning floating around.
Eight figures means $10 million.
Noah Dobson's pretty good.
He is good.
25-year-old, not an American.
Steve.
P.E.I.
Did score a bunch of points a year ago
before Patrick Waugh sort of took over
and during that and then during the first patch.
Now, last year, everybody in the Islanders had a bad year.
It was a bad year.
I don't think Noah Dobson forgot how to play hockey.
The question is, is he 30 point, 40 point, 80 point?
What is he?
And I don't know after the season he had that you're not taking some pretty
significant risks going, okay, we'll make you a $10 million defenseman.
Brandon Montour got his big payday from Seattle and he went like 30 something,
30 something, 30 something, 30 something, 70 something free agent.
That's how it's supposed to work.
uh and also dobson is an rfa yeah so that's great that you want that man but it's things
are just oh yeah i want more than kelma car oh for sure for sure for sure different cap world
where to give you that idea when you played together on team canada oh well you didn't
oh you didn't oh okay and you want as much you want more yeah oh okay that's great man
well like i just i listen i love him he's a great player you're on who makes more bouchard or
dobson bouchard bouchard what the yeah evan bouchard the 25 year old like out there breaking
playoff records like no dom said 25 rfa they're looking for the very similar contracts one should
definitely come in more than the other and i think it'd be an overpay to give evan bouchard
11 million dollars so there's no way noah dobson should make 11 million dollars yeah uh so i don't
blame him for starting there but i think it's your job as the new islanders gm to politely respond
no but yeah i think this is these reports i think are along the same lines of the matthew nye's
reports of the conversations it's negotiation you start at the fucking moon yeah like and then you
work your way down and eventually
land on Earth.
That's how I think this is done.
Specifically on PEI. Noah Dobson
is just starting at the top and they'll work
their way to something reasonable.
Whatever he signs for, I'm watching closely
because you know who's an RFA next year
at a younger age?
Who was on Team Canada?
Harley? Thomas Harley.
Who's only making four right now?
Who makes more? Harley or Bouchard?
I think it's going to be Harley.
Or Bouchard.
No, Bouchard.
Oh, Bouchard, sorry.
Oh, Bouchard, Dobson, and Harley are all competing.
I don't know about that.
I think Bouchard makes more than Harley.
Okay.
And it's because there's the tax-free state thing.
We're going to talk about that in a second.
That plays into it.
But I also think Thomas Harley's team candidate,
he's making more than Noah Dobson.
Right.
And you know who his agent is?
Who's that?
Darren Farris.
Andy Scott, agent for Mikko Rantanen.
So I think that will be an interesting conversation.
Maybe, because remember, Dallas is trying to clear a lot of space.
You guys saw, you know, we did the thing on the Mason Marchment trade.
There was a video.
We put a video out, right?
We haven't talked about it here.
Yeah, we haven't talked about it yet.
They've got, you think they've got cap problems now.
They're going to have some cap problems next year, too.
They have some decisions to make.
Now, Mason Marchment goes to the Seattle Kraken for a couple of picks, right?
One pick this year, one pick next year.
Their mid-round pick's a third and a fourth.
and Jeff Merrick tweets out and then Elliot also confirms today on 32 Thoughts that there was a
trade made tax no tax date to no tax date in Mason March no income tax no income tax um and this is
just after we were told it doesn't matter it's a lie it's a lie and I'm done Jonathan March or so
the reason he has trade protection is because when he signed in Nashville he said if you trade me
i don't want my contract to be worth less money elsewhere no i'm too old one day i'm gonna die
i'm done being listened to liars so it matters it matters it matters you know what it might no
it matters it matters it always mattered it matters now it's going to continue to matter
it matters stop it so what they what they wanted to do so jeff jeff made a really interesting point
which was you don't want to get out there as a general manager you sign this guy in a no tax
state at a slight
discount because it's a no-tax state
and then you trade them to
a tax state or Canada
and
they tend to not like it
which we learned from Alan Walsh is a no-tax
country
the Raptors
exactly
what was your response
so you'll be blown away
by this but there is a tax
sheltering thing you can take advantage
of in canada that was so devastatingly good for the raptors that the nba banned it what the nba
said you cannot if you're an nba player and you play in canada you can't do this and it's i forget
what it's called it's like uh there's like a place now do you have all access to all that money no
but the second you leave canada and go somewhere else or you retire you got it it's yours tax-free
is that why we got on the last episode you blow your mind i'm telling you please listen to agent
provocateur please of course i do i know you do but i'm just telling the people he's not in the
audience you were looking at me when you said it i was like no i know you do it's one of the owners
what amazing and and so but but we're getting besides the point the reality is sometimes to
people they don't want because what's annoying about it is you don't have access to that money
yeah that's annoying yes i want access to that money so the note so people that will tell you
hey the no tax state really doesn't matter well actually does it incredibly does because even if
you got to park your money and get it later well you got to park your money and get it later but
i think it matters as much as like everything matters yeah team culture like media and fans
i want i want to play in toronto because i'm from here and i want to play in the biggest market yeah
how do you like okay how are you going to create a salary cap system that limits that like it to me
and the tax thing it's like okay so you want to live in in texas because it's tax-free or whatever
or or you're playing for the la kings you could live in texas for the rest of the year
you could have your main residence over there and live in a state income tax-free state and then
you're only charged for the 41 home games that you'd play at crypto yeah and then well the other
teams in california and whatever but your road games are taxed differently than your home game
and you might not live in that state so how do you create a rule that balances that out i don't know
how that's possible right so i don't think it's anything they can do about it i think it's a thing
i think it's annoying to say that it's not a thing exactly knowledge it's a thing and there's not
much we can do it's a lie it's it's a lie yeah it is a thing but you can't do anything about it
yeah that's done hey you know what i'll walk away from it right i feel validated yeah thanks for
listen to us thank you but gary bettman will go on a panel and say no for nhlers who've played
in the league this is not a problem and gary bettman's a fucking loser for doing that shit
looks down at all the plebs and dummers just idiots who are beneath him oh what a condescending
yeah no he said it was bad journalism he said bison and he's like that's first off bison that's
not a journalist right but he called it bad if i ever interviewed him it would be my last interview
yeah probably would he's hey gary can you shut the fuck up he's gaslighting fans by saying it's
not a thing it's a thing amongst players they obviously think about it people within the game
think about it it's just something they can't control or too much about the reality of life
is the tax thing isn't something you can control with the salary cap you know what you can't control
not having a hard cap you could have a little bit of an income tax i'm just saying yeah
income tax a uh a flexible cap anyway this is alan walsh and adam wilde chatting about uh the
tax thing called an on agent provocateur that's the show the best podcast in the universe better
than anything steve dangle's ever done and there is a tax vehicle called an rca retirement
compensation agreement that can bring a player's effective tax rate over his time in Canada
to around where it would be playing in a no-state tax jurisdiction.
The media was not informed enough about it to report it accurately at certain times historically.
players were not educated enough on it and even teams were not educated enough if i were a gm
of a canadian hockey team i would have a tax expert right at the ready with tax projections
with the whole rca laid out on every free agent signing and that would go along to the agent and
the player with every offer. Right. Right. I mean, the team should be more aggressive
in promoting RCAs. There are agents and agencies, myself included, that got educated on RCAs
when they first started going into practice. And it is a way to alleviate the differences
in tax a player will pay over his career in canada and the nba as adam said saw rcas as so much as of
an advantage for the toronto raptors over every other nba franchise that they banned nba players
from getting rcas crazy so you can do it like where's the media noise about that and alan walks
shit about tax law alan walks the walk a lot of his his clients have signed in canada i don't
think they're scared yeah well because octagon also has a pretty and some of these some of these
bigger agencies do have pretty incredible money managers that know the tax laws in every
jurisdiction did a show with one of them yes and so like i think that's the that's the key um but
to say that it isn't an issue it's an issue it's not it doesn't exist it's a thing it's just you
can't say it's not you can't regulate it through the salary cap your playlist might get you through
the workday, but have you ever wondered how your ancestors spent theirs? What work helped them

guys what's lost in that is eric holla was traded from the new jersey devils back to the predators
where he played for a season and i had almost forgotten that he played there because uh
it was covid and what the devils got for holla i think is comparable or maybe a little bit better
per capita than what Marchman got.
I feel like... The difference is the Devils
aren't screwed. Yeah. The Predators
should have got Marchman.
He's a no-tax state. Why didn't you
go get Marchman? Maybe you didn't want to.
Maybe they didn't want to. So the question in Nashville
though, in the bigger thing, is
Marsh or so is a... Here's what they're calling
him. You ready? It's what you don't want in hockey.
Big personality.
Oh, boy.
And they call Mason Marchman a big personality.
Now, I think the Kraken
have no personality so mason marchman might bring some which is good let me tell you
there i i think they lack personality i think they lack toughness and he brings that
mason marchman scored at a 62 point pace seattle's leading score was jared mccann was 61
they need a backup goalie so bad but i they might need offense even worse but adam the reason the
nashville predators didn't do the mason marchman deal which you outlined that resume that's exactly
what they need yeah the reason they didn't do it is because barry trotz is bad as his job
he has taken over as general manager of this team and consistently over and over and over again he
makes bad decisions and i just don't think he's good at being a gm but because he's barry's trotz
he gets the freedom to be the gm and there's enough evidence that he doesn't know what he's
doing if you're a gm call him if you're the president of a team and you mike babcock say
to your gm give me your phone i want to look at your phone and there isn't a phone call place to
every day you fire him we forget that there's zero evidence to show and there's zero resume
to show that he knows what he's doing in terms of player movement well there's certainly a lot
more to show that he doesn't at the at the end of next season if the predators greatly improve
i'll be like sorry barry sure that so far he's been a madman well they're older as i said in
the video they're older and wingier which is what they were too much of last year he got three and a
half million dollars he had 21 points they got yeah and they got him to be probably third line
center left wing insurance for fetter svetchkov who's a kid and was drafted in the first round
in a weird draft and like and hey man you you guys need center help what happened to oh philip
thomasino oh tommy novak gone gone right for nothing well that's the anti-italian agenda
he got rid of a lot of guys with the italian lesson in 1985 through 1987
barry trotz was head coach slash gm of the dauphin kings of the mjh i love dauphin dauphin
by the way dauphin was uh it's the it's the name for prince in french
the next in line the next in line and they're the kings so from 1985 to 1987 he was gm slash
head coach from that moment until he was named general manager of the nashville predators in
2023 he spent that entire time coaching hockey and he was great at it and he was the one of the
best that we've ever seen in the history of time he has no experience running a front office
he doesn't know how to do it he's never done it and they gave him the top job to do player moves
and he's proven for the last two seasons that he's not good at it hey jesse though the thing is he
was a legendary coach so we must know oh there you go i always think gms i've seen gm step in
and do a marginal job coaching i've never seen a i haven't seen a lot of coaches step up and be a
good gm i think there is it's a different the point i'm trying to make is a completely different
job. Just because you're good at head coaching
doesn't mean you're good at making trades
and signings. It's not a long list.
I know Scotty Bowman did both
in the 60s.
There's a different world
in 19-dickety-two
where the player was also
the president.
You had player coaches back then.
Of the United States.
And guys had day jobs and they were also the GM
of the National Hockey League team.
He also worked a landscaping job in the summer.
That was his training.
post post cap implementation like there's there's a world today where barry trotz is just a head
coach and doesn't know how to run a front office yeah sound real highfalutin there yeah well listen
i used to work those landscaping jobs looking down on the work oh you could have made the nhl
uh ryan donato signed for uh four million per four years with the can of the chicago blackhawks
good signing yeah like good for them uh like career four million bucks is not going to be
any even if he underperforms next year i don't know if he ever gets to the same heights again
If he underperforms, it might literally be good for them on account of Gavin McKenna.
But I know you could have got a lot from it at the deadline.
At some point, the Blackhawks have to...
Warm bodies.
They're not rebuilding.
Yeah.
They're rebuilding.
They were de-building.
No, like tearing it all the way down.
Now it's the rebuild.
The Blackhawks should be the team.
if the Penguins are looking
they're the only team in the NHL looking to get worse
right now according to a few people
why are you
not calling them for
Ricard Raquel, Brian Russ, and
Eric Carlson
put them all in the back box
that team has Sidney Crosby on it
it's an affront
to why are they trying to be worse
because they're rebuilding
Jesse
they're rebuilding and they're being sold
They have Sidney Crosby.
And they're rebuilding.
It would sure be great.
That's a crime against hockey.
If you're selling that team,
it'd sure be great to have
Eric Carlson's contract
off your books,
wouldn't you say?
I'm telling you, man.
And by the way,
Dubas and Davidson
have made many deals
in the past.
Wouldn't it be cool if
make a big blockbuster deal?
Hey, Kyle, I'll help you out.
I'll take that $10 million
Eric Carlson cap hit.
He can come play with Bedard.
We'll get Russ.
We'll get Raquel.
You guys get bad.
You get McKenna.
Carlson, Bouchard.
Bouchard?
Evan Bouchard?
Emberson.
Evan Bouchard?
No, no.
I'm just trying to make the craziest offensive no defense right side in hockey.
Oh, yeah.
I don't know who they would trade to Pittsburgh.
Nurse for Carlson.
One for one.
Damn.
Why would they do that?
I don't know why they do that.
Why would you do that?
I'm just kidding.
It's not real.
Fabian Zetterlin re-signed with the Sens.
I'm still not sure why the Sharks made that trade, but maybe because they have a ton of
young players coming up.
That was an odd one.
zetterlin was a great ad for this sense i'm still mad at the sharks for doing it um stop making
atlantic teams better challenge yeah um do we call jonathan becker at the sharks and go hey man can
you not trade people the atlantic that'd be great i don't think this is the brandon hagel deal no
but it's it smacks of it you're like wait that guy's good though that he's the exact
age that you need why are you now i don't remember what the sens gave up i will look it up maybe it
was worth it like maybe it was a lot but like zetterlin's a good player he wasn't an unreal
senator uh-huh okay so zetterlin was acquired by ottawa for along with tristan's tristan robbins
and a 2024 first fourth round pick in exchange for noah greger
zach uh ostapich ostapchuk ostapchuk and a 2025 second rounder man i'd keep zetterlin yeah i'd
rather have zets but maybe they feel like they've got they got to open up more roster spots younger
guys he is he is a younger guy he's 24 right and he's built like a fridge they loved him down there
when we were all the teammates loved him he's built like a fridge 5 11 220 for an nhl player
I hate that he's a Sen.
Sen's fans are smart enough to know
that even though he wasn't the greatest
with Ottawa after they acquired him,
he's going to be just fine.
Yeah, he just has to get a training camp in.
He's going to be fine.
Last thing, very, very quickly,
because I know we're running a little long here.
There was a really great article by Peter Baugh
in The Athletic about the New York Rangers
starting from last season
and the mistrust with Chris Drury.
And I just want to read one part.
Incredible piece that you got the time
read it all wow so good some tough quotes it's it reminds me of michael russo after paul fenton
was let go from the wild it's that kind of crazy yes good barclay goudreau had a 15 team no trade
list in his contract but the rangers never asked him to consider waiving it instead he got a call
from drury just 15 minutes before the june 18th waiver wire was published to tell him he would be
on the list wow which would give every team with the league where san jose sharks having top
a chance to claim him had goudreau cleared waivers the team could have sent him to the ahl
and buried his contract or explored buyout options now several rangers players met at panarin's house
a couple of weeks before training camp to say goodbye to barclay goudreau uh before he left
for san jose at the gathering players openly expressed resentment with how drury had handled
goudreau and truba situations because remember he tried to trade him to detroit uh according to one
person who was present added that's interesting added another former ranger who requested
anonymity so he could speak freely about his old team there's some lost trust clearly and it's hard
to know where that trust was lost but it's in the room now and you have guys wondering who's next
that part in particular was very interesting because the athletic corrected their own reporting
because they were like at the time we got word that everything was good between jury and the
players and then this is what we've learned now since we've talked to some people who used to be
right there hey steve didn't you have a similar report last year i did and everyone said it never
happened it was odd and then emily caplan who's extremely good at her job and works for espn and
reported this uh from literally right next to the rangers bench uh confirmed what i had reported
and um what was it she's kind of awesome oh what's your report that there was a uh i said there was
a players only meeting now i was told it may not have been players only but players on the rangers
were very outward and vocal about their anger with some of the decisions that chris jury made
but it never happened and it wasn't a meeting it was just a gathering of people to discuss
something yeah well and then really got into the semantics to try and turn down your report
And then there was a player on the Rangers.
I don't remember who it was.
Trochek might have been Trochek.
And someone was like, well, look, he said it never happened.
Yeah.
So did Rasmus.
So and there's a report you got caught talking shit about your boss.
Did that happen?
No, it didn't.
Confirm that into a microphone.
Like what?
Of course he's going to say no.
Come on.
Or the Rasmus Dahlien report with Biz last year where it's like, hey, he if things don't get better, he's going to request a trade.
By the way, that that totally happened.
he said i can't do this anymore yeah and they confirmed that they had the meeting trade he
just had a meeting they did the semantics thing where it's like no it wasn't exactly like that
well yeah it wasn't exactly but the general gist of it is correct listen not everything is the
three-on-three league guys sometimes i know what i'm talking about yeah but sometimes sometimes it
is three on three sometimes it is yeah one time one time the rest of it's been pretty good i said
the Steve Sayles thing remember and I was
like oh shit but you were right
it took me months and months to be right but
I was right Nick Kiprios reported
before the 2021 season
that Shea Weber was going to retire
because he had a bad injury on his foot
yes and and everybody's like you're full of
shit you don't know they go to the finals he never plays
another game again Kip was right he was just right
too early he was like two years too early yeah
yeah no he nailed it he's like this this
foot injury is going to take his career whatever it was
but and he thought it would have been a little sooner and then
Shea Weber pushed through because Shea Weber
is a magical unicorn.
Yes.
Who should be
in the Hall of Fame
and he is.
You think?
First ballot.
First ballot.
And I think that's the bar
for first ballots.
Yeah.
If Shea Weber's in,
you know,
a couple other guys
should get in.
They've made the Weber bar.
That's what I'm calling it
from now on.
When we went through that.
Listen,
he's a Hall of Famer.
First ballot.
First ballot is insane.
That's wild.
Yeah.
So the Hall of Fame
is the Weber bar.
All right.
Let's wrap it up.
I hope everybody has a great week.
And I do want to say a quick shout out to everybody at sport check.
