The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake.
James Duthie's joining us later on in the show.
The James Duthie of TSN.
Not some guy we pulled off the street who's also James Duthie.
Imagine.
Happens to be the first time I've ever met him.
Have you guys ever met him before?
Several times.
Okay.
Great.
When I hear just great guy.
So I'm excited.
This is going to be good.
Just garbage human.
If you want to see James Duthie and I at the same friggin' time,
Kitchener Public Library.
Oh, fuck.
Wednesday.
We're going to be talking about his new book, Certified Beauties.
Buddy, I love the KPL.
Love the Kitchener.
Love a good KPL time.
Yeah, the Kitchener Public Library is actually, it slaps like it's super weird, but you're
like walking in and you're like, this is the greatest venue I've ever been to.
Because it's just sort of a nice library.
And then there's this separate room where it's like, all right, Kitchener, you want
to rock?
It's insane.
But it's so clean and well kept.
Yes.
Yeah.
Anyway.
Also, Drew and Stu Pickham.
Week 9, we got a Kyler Murray jersey giveaway.
I don't know if you guys have checked out the Drew and Stu show.
A lot of people have.
It is a football betting incredible show.
And if you haven't played Drew and Stu Pickham on Spark, you should.
Because we've got the Arizona Cardinals Kyler Murray jersey.
It's a Nike rivalries jersey, so it's a little bit different.
It's cool.
It's exciting.
And all you got to do is make your week 9 picks and top the weekly leaderboard.
So click the link in the description and compete against Drew, Stu, and the entire SDPN crew.
Yeah, whoever comes in first at the end of week nine, you're getting that jersey.
And it's free.
Like, it's just a pick-em contest that's free.
You just sign up and you play.
It's fun.
I'm shocked at how bad I've done that.
Considering kicking everyone's ass at SDPN Fantasy Football.
Who are you?
Kicking everyone's ass.
Who are you?
Six and one.
Six and one.
Numero uno.
Adam Wilde.
Who was the one?
Oh, that was Steve Dang.
Steve Dang L
Yeah
Fart
Steve aren't you doing
Like really well
On the
Drew and Stu Pickham
Weren't you like
Right there
With Drew at some point
I have fallen
I'm doing okay
I'm doing okay
I forgot a couple weeks
I started terribly on that
It was bad
It was real bad
Yes
Yes
So we've got that going on
And obviously
You know
It's an exciting week
For baseball fans
In this country
And I wanted to start
the show and i i know that uh cj and julian are like well we don't want to turn the hockey show
into a baseball show i'm like no man yes you should i want to hear everything about what it
was like being at those games but today i woke up to or actually last night i was awake for
because i was recording nail on the apex at midnight um as you do uh well because tim was
tim had to get the airport it was in the mexico the time difference whatever anyway long story
short um i am i i'm going to bed and i see this this clip of dave roberts la dodgers manager
and i can't decide whether we're living in the dumbest timeline or if this is in reference to
something else because listen i'll tell you something as a canadian one of the things you
grow up with is when it comes to our american counterparts is you obviously know that they're
bigger than us, right? They're 10 times our population. We have 40 million, they have 400
million. They are, we're used to the fact that there's an ego that comes with just being an
American that most Americans have no idea even exists. They have no idea. But when you walk
around telling everybody you're the best country in the world, there's an ego with that. And I
think we're fine with the ego. The ignorant stuff gets a little hard to deal with. And what I mean
is last week when people came to the country we know it's not all of you stop yeah yeah stop it
right now we're not talking about you stop the american media especially was like wow i had a
caesar for the first first time well you've never had a bloody mary before uh it's canadian
starbucks here's what's on the menu it's crazy it's the same as american star is it different
it's not okay um but i i uh i love the fact that people are getting educated on it that makes me
happy that's great i'm glad you enjoyed the our fine city and that sort of thing
dave roberts last night made a suggestion that perhaps the blue jays not only took control of
game one but perhaps they took control of the borders of customs uh now i've got the clip
jesse if you want to run it uh you can just read the quote the quote is uh oh i don't i actually
don't have the quote uh i have the i only have the clip he said but essentially mark carney here
you go you want me to play i'll play it i didn't have audio uh you know no i don't know um my
connecting flight was delayed do you have a travel story for us as well uh you know i don't want to
get too far into it i just arrived about 30 minutes ago so uh there were some delays um
i don't know if there was intent or not but it just man the international stuff was a bear
but uh we made it we made it um i hope he's kidding so bad so the thing about intent is it
seems in jest when you read it it's one thing when you hear it it's another yeah but the reason
that there were delays is because the american government is in shutdown mode and they're having
staffing shortages at lax on top of that meaning that every flight in lax was delayed and so he was
delayed and i and and i think it was sort of like okay we've dealt with the thing for the like the
last week from american media coming up here john hayman who lives in new york like being like i
haven't been here since 1993 what it's a it's an hour flight man what's wrong with you um i want
to know do you think he's suggesting that the toronto blue jays may have delayed his flight
uh it's way fun and it's also funny because if he does he doesn't know that to re-enter the
united states you must go through american customs we don't control those customs so i don't know
listen i don't know enough about this guy uh because i'm just a canadian and i don't know
anything about baseball what's a strike um we just got new cars here yeah i just we just got
cars here yeah um i i don't i don't know enough about this guy in particular but um in hockey
like so we're coming from a hockey background all all the teams go to canada yeah frequently
not all the baseball or basketball teams do and i could see how it would be a big pain in the ass
like i mean all the teams in the al east and the al obviously have to deal with it all the time
but if you don't play the blue jays often what a pain in the ass right like i i was in the the
reds dressing room um when i was an intern this is like 2009 ken griffey jr was there i was like
holy shit um and they just start handing out forms all around the room and it was it was like custom
forms and some of the players were like what the fuck what is this because you just you don't have
to do it like how many times do the reds come to toronto in a year one series maybe so i is that it
is that what's going on here well i just like forgot does that mean he's never left the united
states well you never you never went to italy on a honeymoon like what if you went through a minor
inconvenience once a year would you remember it like maybe you just forgot uh-huh i don't know
man i'm trying to throw in the bone that me too jesse hearing that what do you think i don't know
I think Dave Roberts just needs to read his own news every now and again because that clip was recorded around 9 p.m. last night, and he said he got in like half an hour ago.
At least that's when the clip was posted, right?
So sometime on Sunday, he got in there.
The Los Angeles Times, about an hour before that, wrote an article that says staffing issues trigger a temporary ground stop at LAX, where the Los Angeles Dodgers were flying from Toronto to LAX.
and it's because of their own government
that caused these problems
and he's trying to turn it into a thing
where Canada stopped them
from getting back into America.
Doug Ford stopped him personally.
He said with his ad,
my friends, no folks.
He says folks.
No, he said folks.
Everyone made fun of him for saying folks
and then he switched to my friends.
And then he said,
here's a dollar beer
in an ad that costs $75 million.
And everyone said,
here's another majority.
so like they literally had they've staffed staffing issues because of the american government
and i understand what he's doing though because this we see this every single time in every single
series in professional sports ever you try and create an enemy you are trying to get your team
together and rally together and link arms against the evil other side that we are trying to defeat
and dave roberts spilling this narrative that we are the underdogs because canada is trying to keep
us out of our own country it's just a way for him to get his team all around yeah in this david and
goliath battle let's not forget who david is the los angeles dodgers i think it's idiotic for them
to think this way but i understand what he's doing as a head coach on a plane sitting there with all
his guys and they're just upset that they can't take off or whatever was happening was delay was
you get up there and you say it's the darn blue jays that are stopping us from getting into our
country that's i guess a good head coach but dave roberts is also a whiny baby and he does this all
the time he is a whiny baby right yeah he has been a whiny baby his entire tenure as los angeles
dodgers head coach this isn't the first time he does these things but it's clearly something he
does to try and get his team to have an enemy and get riled up one of the things i thought that
might have confused him and americans again you're gonna love this because you you know when when we
talk about a little bit of a little arrogance with the americans a few few years ago and i mean this
two decades ago uh america called canada and said hey listen we got this great idea for customs
instead of you flying all the way here and us denying you or accepting you how about we pre-check
you so when you fly out of pearson you got to go through american customs on canadian soil and if
they reject you you don't get on the plane you're home right and so the canadian government's like
yeah man whatever you want and so now we're the one of the only countries in the world that allows
this uh because you know we're friends i don't know if we everybody's forgotten that but we are
friends and uh maybe dave roberts got confused and thought that that was canadian customs checking
him on the way out he clearly didn't know what was going on he clearly didn't know they had
staffing issues he clearly didn't know that you're going through u.s customs he was clearly just
trying to make up a narrative it's so so stupid i don't know i can't even summon the energy to
get mad at him we live in a post-truth world he can think whatever the hell he wants and good
luck to him in his series against the cardinals i died he probably doesn't even know who he's
playing i want to tell you guys i'm personally thrilled because if if he missed a detail that
obvious you can be damn sure there's other details that he's missing no running his team
No, you're jumping.
Hot take here.
You heard it here first.
We've been hard on John Schneider for years in this town.
Maybe the guy we ought to be pointing the finger at is him.
I think it's actually the complete opposite in that sometimes these guys who work in sports and are head coaches or athletes,
they're so dialed into their sport that they have no idea what's going on inside in the regular universe.
The most brilliant, detailed sports mind in the world
has forgotten their Facebook password three times this month.
Like, it's just how the world works.
And what's weird is that it auto-populates.
Sorry?
What's weird is that it auto-populates, too.
Yeah.
Still forgot it.
Still forgot.
No, it's...
I badly want this to be real.
I want it to be real.
Sometimes life throws you curveballs,
and you don't have time to get to them,
and that's where TaskRabbit comes in,
and I think you should check this out,
because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that

challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research
together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer
register today at pmcfwalk.ca uh now uh let's talk a little bit about uh there's a couple of
yeah there's a couple of teams i want to talk about utah a little bit later nah seven straight
wins oh uh leafs split a home and home with buffalo and you know you could be you you you
shouldn't be faulted for missing that you were probably watching jesse blake's uh baseball
streams both nights no no they they did the right thing they pushed the game up on saturday they did
they did i could not to tune into both could not believe how many people watched the saturday
leaf stream well you know why i think it was early yeah they did a great job it was cool
that we were that we were sitting in there so we get to see it populate before we actually go live
and producer hayden who was working with me we just sort of looked at the the audience numbers
right before going live on oh boy it was a ghost town and uh it ended up being a party i don't like
that adam you called it a split they they the second game was an ot right so buffalo walks
away with three points three out of four yeah yeah well i meant just wins and losses but yes
But I feel like we came out of that weekend.
We're thinking, okay, at least they got that split there.
But Buffalo walking in with three or four points out of those two matchups
was really good for them.
Very good.
And it's not great for the Leafs.
I don't want to be down on the team because it's still early,
but they need to start getting this thing going.
That should have been them getting three or four points there.
I'll give you a stat before we jump into this.
The Leafs, according to Jonas Siegel, are averaging 3.4 goals a game.
They're averaging, giving up, 3.7.
And, you know, if you noticed on Saturday,
Anthony Stoller's was not even on the bench.
Concerning.
Well, I don't think that's concerning.
It's more so he's pooped.
And Dennis Hildeby was just sent down like a few minutes ago
before we started doing the show.
But he was sitting on the bench.
And I don't know why I missed that going into Saturday's game, but I did.
I was like, oh, that's Dennis Hildeby.
um i i wonder about uh with joseph wall coming back with the team feeling a little bit like it
felt it's fault if it's felt off and part of this is something we talked about before the opening
game which is you lost scott lawton why do you have to wreck all your other lines too i yes and
with that you took the the opportunity you were going to give max domey to really get a run of
five or six games to start the season alongside austin matthews you you took him and you put him
in a center position he was never going to succeed in never we saw it last year it didn't work well
let's do it again because it's not going to work again it's and the problem now is that max is now
not in much of a rhythm and so he looks like a guy who's fighting to find any spot on this roster if
he was traded today i'd be joyous like he's been that he's been awful but but he's been in a
different position every game i agree i yeah and what do they call those players if you want to be
glass half full they're versatile if you want to be a pessimist about it they're a plug but steve
if you're trading max dome you're not getting anything back yes like i don't feel like so good
yeah you're not improving your team by just getting i think i'm counting on him getting back
to a 40 point guy i think that's what you're counting on that i would kill for that are you
kidding he ends the season with 40 points yeah after the start he's had oh my god it would kill
for that but there was so jesse i sent you a couple screen grabs and they're screen grabs
right so they don't fully articulate everything that happened on a play um but the leafs d
has been really bad and they've had a terrible time defending the rush and this one on the
sabers first goal to me i was like yep okay there's there's their issue in a nutshell so
jesse that's actually the second one can you go to the one where they're pointing yeah okay so adam
i need you to help me here because maybe i just have the wrong read of it the sabers are attacking
three on three there's a trailer that would make it a four on three which you don't want to be
outnumbered but it's not the end of the world benoit has a guy myers has a guy and he's pointing
at tage thompson who has a stick in the air terrifying thing max domey also is pointing
at tage thompson and is cutting towards tage thompson i think max domey's gonna get tage
thompson guys let's go to the next one to find out if he did he is covering a ghost he's not
covering shot he's not covering pass he's not covering man he's not covering a damn thing
it's just tage thompson the world of space in front of him and one of the best goal scorers
in the sport and of course he scored of course he friggin scored there there there are performances
like like like i'll give you austin matthews recently um i don't think he's been playing
poorly but when matthews is on the ice you expect good things to happen and not enough good things
are happening but i don't think bad things are happening necessarily when he's on the ice like
you know turnovers odd man rush going the other way or he's coughing it up or what
almost exclusively bad things are happening when domi's on the ice these days
it's it's tough it's really tough but if you put a guy in a position constantly that's different
every game oh they're putting him in a position to fail i agree but you know it's it's like
robertson like all right how do we get him in there how do we you know and they try to find
places for him to succeed well right now he's on the top line with austin where he looked good he
looked really good actually i was like hey what if they found something yeah hey that'd be awesome
i would like that justin bourne was advocating for that and you know like sometimes these guys
don't they just don't know how to play a depth role and there are there are nights where nick
robertson tries to cosplay i am a bottom six player and sometimes it looks okay a lot of the
time it looks exhausting and i don't want to see it anymore putting him on the top line even though
he's not an everyday player bizarrely sort of kind of makes sense uh i think i kind of think the same
thing about Domi a little bit you can't be in your bottom six but even like during his brief
appearances up there on the top line he didn't look good like it wasn't a mesh this season I
he's got a very limited amount of time here to prove he can fit this team or he's potentially
destined to a career what some guys make an incredible career off of being the guy who
scores on a bad team uh-oh puts up points on a bad team um he's put up points on good teams before
he's put up points on this team when they were pretty good looking um he's had two playoffs with
the leafs i'm not sure he looked bad in either of them and he wasn't great in the panther series but
you know looked all right against ottawa seven points in 13 playoff games last playoffs
like that's great yeah he steps it up year before four points in seven games
and they'll get the dallas stars here man how many leafs had a better point per game in the
playoffs than regular season over the last two years the list is short and has max both years
Yep. Right. So I'm not overly eager to get rid of this player, but like I, what I've been doing
is trying to grade on a curve with the Leafs. Cause I lost my mind after the cracking game,
they got completely outclassed by New Jersey. It looked like they fumbled a couple of points
against Buffalo in the first game. And then luckily they got a overtime squeaker there.
So I'm like, okay, trying to evaluate who's having a good season,
like objectively good season.
John Tavares, holy shit, what a horse.
Man.
Love him.
Rockstar shit on that goal.
Rockstar shit.
Unbelievable.
Nice.
Unreal.
Think he's having a really, really, really good season.
Save my favorite Leaf.
How do you not know who his favorite Leaf is?
Oh, William Nylander.
man that was a that was a i wish you could have got a glimpse inside my brain there that was a
master class in overthinking i was like mcmahon yeah the guy that wore the team sweden jersey
to canada's first game in the four nations let's see yeah that that guy master class yeah yeah
william newlander say my second favorite leaf uh see i think that's john tavaris bobby mcmahon
oh is it bobby mcmahon oh i just i want to give him some love because he's been unreal yeah he's
very good he for me after john tavarez is the most impressive leaf this entire season now why
is that give me that because he's i think we um the the amount that uh he struggled last year
with not playing you know well he wasn't in the opening night line wasn't there he was injured so
i don't know him this year season coming back fully healthy um playing every day you really
see him excelling in a top six role i don't think there's any reason to remove him out of the top
six he has a place there he's playing physical he's on the list for most improved oh yeah because
because of that yeah he's playing physical he's going to the net and he's scoring like it's it's
unreal what he's being able to contribute to this team matthias michelli has been up and down mostly
down he just had his best two or three games as a leaf dakota joshua has been up and down he just
had his best back-to-back games as a leaf he scored in back-to-back games um i think nick
waugh is coming into his own i like some of the things easton cowan's doing nick robertson finally
got his first goal uh there's a lot to like about some of the individual seasons dakota joshua two
goals two games yes that's what i said yeah that's what i said sorry that's okay i was
digging up a lot of i was digging up a lot on the boil so yeah those are the leafs who were like
okay yeah got something there those good leaves and then the majority of the other side is very
underwhelming their defensive structure is very poor but i i don't put a ton of it on the actual
defenseman um i feel like when you're bad at defending the rush uh for there to be a rush
to begin with i feel like at least one of your forwards got caught and two two of the sabers
goals that ended up in the back of the net it was a miscommunication or whatever on that first goal
with Domi and there's a screen in front a Bowen Byram floater for god's sake yeah but Primo who
I thought had a solid game you can't see the damn thing also that is the Caden Primo experience
right yeah we were not expecting Joseph Ball or Anthony Stoller's level out of him I mean there
was a reason he was on waivers if he was the tallest goalie in the league he wouldn't have
been able to see that puck yeah but there was one where like his pad should have been the third the
third one oh my god yeah i i don't think he saw it but he yeah that pad has to be down you got a
real good point about the forward group not helping out defensively at all because i think like even
more so them uh being caught getting uh on the on the rush and guys scoring that way they they
allow so many rush chances but it starts with in the offensive zone they're not able to maintain
pressure and keep that puck and they're getting beat the other ways because when they take shots
it's one and done nobody in this four group is going in there and getting the shots after the
shot they don't park no they don't they don't park in front of the net like it's a lot of this
flyby shit and like sometimes it'll be like park in front of the net shot it's behind the net
and then you do all this work to go and get it you look at the front of the net the guy's gone
yeah why why did you leave and so it feels like they're getting beat on both ends and it's just
a constant circle of getting beat up and down so you enter the offensive zone you get one shot
nobody's going to get the puck back so the other team takes it the other way and then you're being
beat up the rush on the other side and then you come back to the same shit it's a bad cycle they're
not playing confident at all like and it's i i think we might be barking up the right tree
with the LaLonde Lambert thank you change and I don't think it's that LaLonde's system
sucks necessarily Detroit fans rolling their eyes it's a different role but it makes sense
that that's probably the part of the Leafs that looks the worst and went through the most upheaval
like it's it's a completely different thing back there Marner was a very important part of that
um and the expectation too is that they're going to contribute offensively I think there's a little
bit of that whereas Lane Lambert was like no you're just going to play defense I also think
hey here's two guys that haven't played an NHL game this year let's put them on the same pairing
in Mermin and Myers that was a disaster that what they got caved because they hadn't played a game
yeah what are we doing that was they weren't great i mean uh it's a rock and a hard place
because tana van riley were out but that was hey you know what you got four other guys that have
played nhl games this year i know and you know what myers did played with riley last year didn't
look great but it certainly looked better than mermis myers yeah that was that was just really
bad and i like mermis um wow bad awful bad and so so okay you know it seems like you know you
You've injected, and we've talked about this,
we've injected a lot into this roster.
And what I mean by that is there's just a lot of new bodies,
new people, new systems, new coaches.
You know, there's a lot of new.
And more so than in years past.
And I think in Jonas' article today with The Athletic,
he was talking about the fact that, yeah,
there's something about this.
The Monday morning leaf report?
I don't know if it's, is that what it is?
I don't even know.
Every Monday.
Must read.
But he basically said, like, there's something.
Oh, it is the Monday morning leaf report.
Yeah, must.
How dare you, Adam?
I'm just pulling it up.
I didn't know that it had a brand name.
Piece of crap.
With respect to Jonas.
Piece of crap, Adam Wilde.
Piece of crap.
Yeah.
He said, yet, okay, he's like, the gold differentials are similar.
The records are similar.
Adam Wilde is a piece of crap.
He's still trying to do the segment.
I know.
I know.
Sorry.
Well, because it's actually like, you know, there are people listening to this.
We do want to make sure that we get to what we're talking about.
Nah, boo, nah, boo.
But, you know, you look at 22-23.
Their record was 4-4-2 in October.
23-24, 5-3-1.
Last year, 6-4-1.
Right now, they're 4-4-1,
and they got a couple more games before the month's up.
He said, you know, is it the same,
which a lot of people are putting out there?
And he said, yet something feels different,
a little more precarious, a little more uncertain.
And that's where I got the 3.4 goals per game,
which is good, but 3.7 against, which is bad.
The team save percentage through nine games is 873.
That's horrible.
Stoller's is one of the worst goalies in the NHL by goals saved above expected, which is not expected on account of he had a 925 two years ago and a 926 last year.
I know they're playing the wheels off them.
I think that, I don't know, there might be something there.
I think it's a little lazy.
A lot of the stuff he's been, I mean, fuck.
He's been their best player on so many nights already.
and he's had a few games that weren't his best but like oh my god they're getting shelled with
chances not shots chances 10 bell and i mean i don't know you can't turn water into wine man
yeah and and you know when you've got uh guys uh going doing the human torpedo into his head
uh nothing happening and nothing happening like that that's you know it's it's so funny
Leaf fans are such a funny group because we um we're like sky is falling but also it's fine
and and you know it's not abnormal for fan bases to be divided against each other but I've been
told it's fine for 10 years I think we talk to each other a lot yeah which is fine and I like
the debates that's going on like I what I don't like is like everybody's saying this but I say
this so I'm fucking better than you we actually won't know the answer to this until a few months
from now but as it stands the reason jonas is referencing the fact that it feels precarious
is because there's a huge change yes you lose mitch marner that is going to be a huge change
and i am still of the opinion i think he wanted to go i think the leafs wanted to change it's
good for both sides outside of him they haven't they didn't really lose anyone they didn't know
they didn't holmberg and patch already yeah like am i missing anyone and i think
Hawk and Bob.
That's right.
One and a half games.
Is Leafs career one of them?
Two.
Is it two?
Full two.
How many minutes did he log as a Leaf?
I don't know if we can count that next game.
Adam, what's your bet?
My bet is 35.
So that's in two games?
Yeah.
So 17 minutes, roughly?
I think he's around 25, 26.
Total?
Total.
Wow.
Yeah, because he was a bottom pairing.
And I don't think they used him that much.
No, he played with Riley.
I can't even remember the games he was in, Steve.
You know me.
You know how good my memory is with that stuff.
I have a vision of him in a white jersey.
Yeah, no, I think I'm more along the lines of the one and a half game.
So, game one, November 13th against Washington.
A 4-3 win.
Played 15 minutes and 36 seconds.
On the road.
Had 22 shifts.
game two november 16th 2024 a 4-3 win over edmonton 12 minutes and 34 seconds
yeah because they were like we're not putting you on the ice total minutes last year for 1.5
million dollars 28 10 hell yeah adam was very close six giveaways madre de dios
when we were down at sport check for the entire playoffs there was a big hawk and paw banner
along with all the other like on those on the streetlights like i i still have that picture
it's so fucking funny but i i i want to say that everything has looked weird and off yes and at a
certain point they're gonna figure a lot of this stuff out and then the stuff that remains that
weird and off that's gonna be the the focus of the season what i like about this season as a
content person is that we don't really know what that is yet in previous years we kind of knew
the thing that scared us in the seattle game and following it against new jersey was the lack of
perceived team cohesion maybe these guys like each other but do they stick up for each other
and then against new jersey are they fast enough and berube was talking about well if they play
the system properly they are fast enough it's just they're playing the system like shit so they look
like shit and they look slow i gotta be honest what i saw against montreal specifically lane
hudson and elise ford's trying to cover him maybe that's just the lane hudson experience but they
didn't have an answer and yeah but the second the puck was anywhere near the boards yeah thanks kid
yeah a hundred percent they just took it uh but i'm just saying lane hudson open ice you're you
know it's a problem that's why you try to keep them away from that and then when you have the
we call it now the brandon carlo incident but it's more more than brandon carlo and what i saw
what i did see this weekend that i liked anyone could have stepped up if they wanted was jake
mccabe somehow hitting one he hit zach benson punched out alex no uh bowen byram oh bowen byram
excuse me uh and punched out alex tuck and then somehow came away uh up two minutes on the
power play which is nuts i i and you know what started all that yuri coolidge earlier in the
game producer hayden caught this he said something along the lines of you're gonna get it because
what happened was they were in a battle in the corner coolidge is holding on to his stick and
when mccabe yanks his stick away he accidentally high sticks coolidge in the face gets a penalty
yeah an ill-gotten penalty and he's like all right sure enough i mean jake mccabe when he's out for
blood will kill you lights bowen byram up i don't want to see bowen byram uh who has dealt with
concussion issues get blown up it's a good hit it's a perfectly good hit tuck does what you're
supposed to do he got his ass kicked but he does what you're what you're supposed to do
and that's coming immediately and stick up for your guy and mccabe spun him around like pin the
tail on the donkey and wham oh my god and like you have to win that game like to me remember i was
saying last Saturday I was like they need a moment to build from that game has to be it
you have that moment from Jake McCabe you're losing in the third period you tie it it's a
new guy who ties it two of the new guys score Robertson gets his first you're feeling all good
about that you're shorthanded you don't have Willie you don't have Tanev and you win it with
breakaway on home ice in overtime if that doesn't help turn your season around i'm not sure what
will like it's it's got to be something you can ride for a little bit i thought you did a good
job in the lfr pointing out too that they gave the belt to mccabe after the game it meant something
yeah it meant something and carlo was in the photo which i thought was very interesting you know
probably overanalyzing that it's just defenseman hanging out with defenseman because riley's in
there too but that was the moment of the game that the leafs obviously took away i'm curious
who gave the belt to mccabe i could probably just look it up on the video but yeah i don't know i
don't know if that's going to add to what you're saying here though because i think what why not
overthink because i think this this is a leader which the team identified as a leader as soon as
he got here and you know they really liked him signed him in the extension last year thank god
they did because you imagine how expensive he'd be now uh-huh and he's going up against his former
team that team that drafted him that's right and he is saying this is how we're going to play now
uh-huh this is how we will deal with these situations and i like that we want that that's
why jake mccabe should be a hero among these fans if he keeps that that stuff up but what's going
to be key to this is not just him doing it the rest of the team's got a sort of they don't have
to they don't have to plow alex tuck's face every time but they do need to at some point have
somebody that's not supposed to stick up for somebody that they need to well and like imagine
if you're looking at this like well the decor is already shorthanded and him in the box for five
minutes i don't know there's no time for that there's a guy coming at me with his gloves drop
pop just nail them for god's sake it's october establish a precedent that you are not to be
fucked with and ideally the team follows suit you know like i've been advocating for
for guys to you know dakota joshua's one if you're not gonna be doing that okay well how
else are you contributing he's like well here's a game-tying goal for you oh well thank you very
much Dakota Joshua even in the game that they lost we're down two all right well here's the goal to
bring us within one for you well thank you very much Dakota Joshua I just need everyone to find
a way to pull your weight and when you're struggling to find answers I think everyone
playing together the way that their coaches design them to play I think that's way more difficult to
do and just laying a few frigging hits and occasionally telling someone to fuck off and
beating them up it's hockey there's no shortage of guys who are willing to go you go someone do
anything and they did anything and they did they at least did that well i think that the the real
test for october is gonna be this week because obviously you give teams a little bit of time here
but the way we view october will be mostly this last week i think it's it's tricky i also
this is probably a lot more fans than the team like we always talk about distractions
and the leafs and what is true and what isn't i mean there are there are fans at that game
who i know didn't really want to be there like it like i was told like dude i have tickets to
this game and i'm dreading it because everyone's mind is on the blue jays right now and they do
not give a shit about this team and the team hasn't given them a reason to give a shit either
um the games are still on the schedule before we move on it's just one note from uh the best
monday morning report ever which is the monday morning lease report by jonas seagull the greatest
the greatest even though adam doesn't understand the branding i need that on a t-shirt jonas who's
by uh jonas siegel as a reader of it every monday morning the thing that i wanted to point out was
his little note on william nylander and his absence on saturday because that absence was so
rare that the last time he could find that nylander missed a game due to injury and not illness like
he's been sick or a covid he missed a couple of those because he had covid was he's talking
regular season regular season games only okay regular seasons was nearly 10 years ago wow
yes i don't think a lot of people realize this but irelander over the last couple years has played
82 82 82 and then 81 because he missed a game due to illness and he's just been an iron man
for this team so jonas wrote um the last i could only find one other regular season game that
Nylander has missed an injury. That was almost 10 years ago on November 28, 2016, when he sat
out against Washington. And that was the only game he missed in the 16-17 season. He played in 81.
The following season, he suited up in all 82. The year after that, he played 54, following his
return from a lengthy contract dispute. And then he missed a couple games of COVID, and he's played
82-82-82. He's just there every day. And I think you don't get enough credit. Well, hockey players
do get enough credit i think when it over time but in this market willie for the amount of shit
he takes as a human just everybody thought he was a pest coming in you know swedish guy and he's
always been the whipping boy for this this market and then he's turned that around the last like
three seasons or so give him some more credit even for that iron man streak we we do sort of
misuse the word toughness
because durability
is a toughness.
Durability is
a skill. Yes, it is
very, very, very
hard to play consistently
in this league.
I think some
people would make the argument, and this is
an unfair one, but I'm going to give it to you anyway.
Go for it.
The reason he's able to do that is he doesn't get involved
physically. I'm going to
say it you know you know it's gonna come up yeah he's the guy media members that will say that and
not blink but he's the guy everyone's trying to hit and absorbing the hit yeah and like pushing
powering through you as you're getting some skin on him and interfering and no that's that's that's
so silly it is very silly i mean it's the kind of you didn't need to say yeah i did yeah i think it
was worth it i think it's a discussion there's people listening right now who believe you're
like well what about this like it's listen we all try to come up with a reason for something we
don't understand and that just sounds like people making shit up if you're on the ice for usually
it's 20 minutes a night for four consecutive seasons 82 games well i shouldn't say four
every season except one game in 2016-17 plus one game in 25-26 this past saturday that is
impressive it is nhl ice everybody's out there being physical you can't hide for nearly a decade
oh yes you can jesse he's swedish slippery swede no i always call him that then if that was the
case pierre engvall would have the longest iron man streak in the history of time no the as mcgee
himself would would have the world's longest iron man street well he was crazy because he could go
into a corner and be lined up for a hit and he would still spin it off and give up the puck you
be like here you can take it it's yours just go into the corner with the force of a plastic
shopping bag just that that katie perry do you ever feel like a plastic bag that's pierre engvall
That's how I felt at the time.
Isn't he out right now?
Yes.
Isn't he out long for surgery?
Yeah.
He's got an ankle surgery.
How did that happen?
I don't know.
Oh.
Well, Nylander.
He's out there not getting it.
How is it possible he got injured?
You guys are leaving out a very important part.
Nylander's from Calgary.
That's true.

i'm shocked has not been hot taken to death go for it okay we're not spending much time on this
by the way because this is a stupid unfair question are you looking and i hate myself
for asking it but i wanted to preempt the first asshole that was going to do it adam loves a
preemptive i love a preemptive you ready for this now the number 34 austin okay james reimer who
else jamie mccowan yeah who else steve dangle uh not no not steve dangle that was a few years ago
Jamie McCowan.
It's James Reimer.
Austin Matthews.
Oh, yeah.
You got an old Steve.
Kevin Gosman.
Okay.
Did Kevin Gosman,
has Kevin Gosman put in
the single best playoff performance
of anybody wearing the number 33
in Toronto history?
33.
30, 34.
I meant 34.
He wears 34.
He doesn't wear 33.
What is your question?
My question is,
of all the people that have worn 34
for all the Toronto teams ever,
has Kevin Gosman put in
the best performance in any playoffs
of a player? Who are the 34s that play
for the Raptors? I don't know.
You didn't even do research
on your own damn question. No, that's
how this works. If you're going to ask a dumb
question like that. Was Antonio
Davis 34 or 33?
I think he was 34. Elijah
would have worn 34.
I'm pretty sure. I don't think
he played a playoff game for the Raptors.
Hey, how about this one?
Charles Oakley.
Oh, 99 to 2001, War 34.
Those teams didn't make the playoffs.
Yes, they did.
Oh, 2001.
That's what I'm talking about.
Sorry.
Yeah, yeah.
It's a good year.
Carlos Rogers, Charles Oakley.
Hey, Jonte Porter.
Khalid Haim is getting there.
Oh, shit.
Hakeem Olajuwon, Robert Archibald, Aaron Williams, Aaron Gray, Greg Steimster.
I don't even know who that is.
None of these people are real.
Alfonso McKinney.
I've heard of Alfonso.
I remember him.
And Jonte Porter.
Who just wrecked a bunch of careers.
Who infamously threw games for prop.
Most of those guys are rumors.
I don't know who you're talking about.
Okay.
The fact that we didn't know their names right away.
The winner is Jonte Porter.
Easily.
Oh, yeah.
In the playoffs?
No, just in the greatest performance by a 34 is Jonte Porter.
Oh, easily.
He got banned from basketball.
He did.
He did.
I just
I saw the number
Yeah you're right Jesse
They were like
Biggest headline grabber
Biggest international
Headline grabber
Is John Tate Porter
You're right
Okay so
John Tate
Nobody did it bigger than Porter
So who comes second
And I'm talking about
Playoff performance
Jamie McCowan
Went to the third round
Yeah
But Kevin Gosman
Is in the World Series
They're in the World Series
And he was
Toe to toe with Yamamoto
For six and a half innings
He was really really
That guy
Until Jonas Brothers
Insane
Yeah Jonas Brothers
Fucking ruined that
Yeah get out of my
Baseball game
They iced him
yeah uh no uh gosman's the answer gosman is the answer yeah long and short of it yeah
that i would like that to continue and then change yes i'd like that to be good for the
next couple of weeks and then in the spring i want matthews to go i'm going to one up that
i'm taking my number back in a different year yes gosman can have 2025 yeah maybe someone else
takes 2026 you mean 34 and 26 hey hey i don't understand hey because of the olympics and the
playoffs oh is it is it matthew's year you know well hopefully only in the spring yeah hopefully
fair enough i i'm sorry i had to ask that boneheaded question because i felt like it was
coming um okay let's talk uh we're gonna bring james on here real quick but i want to talk about
two stories uh first off utah mammoth who started the season one and two wow are now seven and oh
in their last seven games.
And do we have a wagon?
So here's the deal.
Obviously, playing fantasy is the best
for keeping track of the entire league
because you're paying attention.
It really is.
J.J. Paterka, who was their big off-season get,
had a lot of points this week and a lot of goals.
And thank God for that
because Panarin and Matthews and Bouchard are sinking me.
And Paterka has three goals, six assists,
nine points in 10 games.
He is only fifth on the team in scoring.
Wow.
Nick Schmaltz, 16 points.
Clayton Keller, 12.
Genther, 11.
Cooley, 11.
Several of them, I believe, are tied for the lead in goals or second in goals.
And Schmaltz, I think, is tied for the Art Ross right now.
Nick Schmaltz of the Utah Mammoth.
listen all of those guys are guys i knew who were good yeah i don't know waiting for them to break
out though didn't we not like this do you think do you think matthias michelli was holding them
back easily i mean that's the only thing i can deduce or no you know what don't don't was holding
back josh don't sorry it's like josh don't there you go i had to get rid of him it is a an
extraordinarily talented roster but it's also sort of crazy that all of those guys the four or five
guys that i mentioned there are all this good at once that's a that's crazy and by the way it's
worth mentioning sergachev is six on the team with eight points in 10 games and you know dersey is
out again unfortunately but with sergachev and dersey out the you know all of last year you
didn't really get a sense of who they were on the back end wasn't marino out yeah as well like
it's just a lot of injuries they had a hard time of it so they were they were when we were doing
our previews really difficult to evaluate because you're like well they ought to be better but how
much better and they were i don't know it was difficult to be like yeah they're gonna make the
playoffs for sure because like how the hell do you know you haven't even really seen them
as they were constructed um it's early but holy shit that's a good looking team man it is kind
of scary first in the division right now obviously when you're eight and two uh beat the jets last
night and i thought that was a big test jets are a great team of course uh great regular season team
especially they're going through everyone right now it's like and even a guy like logan cooley
like i expect to have a really good career and be a huge factor i didn't expect the arrival to
happen already now we have seen massive winning streaks in the last few years and i can't remember
who went on like a 10 game winning streak and then didn't even make the playoffs flyers was
at the flyers yeah there's and like now i think there were a couple the wild went on one uh didn't
the wild have like 15 or 20 games where they were basically undefeated or something like there was
there was a game a few years ago where a team on a 12 game winning streak played a team on a 16
game winning streak one of them was minnesota i forget the other one so my question to the two
of you is is this i'm not saying this pace necessarily but is this overall success sustainable
do you because there's ones that I did not believe in Nashville being one of them and in the long
term I was right they did make the playoffs but in the long term they've been bad what what do we
think about Utah can they because this is a team that never always kind of right maybe got young
guys were excited about ah sometimes you're just incredibly hot and you ride it like like okay
what evidence is there that nick schmaltz is a contending for the scoring title type of player
there's not a ton right right so you know every year there's a guy and we go oh he's on pace to
score 82 goals yeah he's on pace to score 164 points and obviously they never do it because
that's frigging impossible yeah connor mcdavid and then you might um uh i think they're a very
strong team i think they're gonna be right in there for the playoffs um obviously i would put
their chances at above 50 now i would have said about 50 when the season began but for this to
continue a lot of things that are going perfectly have to go that way for several months and that's
just not the way the sport works but i believe in magic jesse do you believe in this magic could
they be the fun story of the year i see a lot of parallels between the utah mammoth and the
montreal canadians who are currently leading the atlantic division there's two teams with
good puck moving defensemen where you'd look down the center depth and you say it's a little light
but those guys are terrific 1B all-star centers, you know?
And then you got great stuff on the wings.
Like, I think there's a lot of similarities,
and it shouldn't be surprising that two teams built in kind of the same ways
are dominating early here.
Check goalies.
Check goalies.
Yeah, hey.
Getting good goaltending here early is very important, too.
Like, I don't know.
I think this might be a little sustainable for Utah,
and I can definitely see them making the playoffs at this point,
just based on how they're playing right now.
i'm i'm excited for the utah man you know bad teams don't usually go on runs in october you
know like usually if you want like the sabers thing they do every year is we're gonna dominate
from march through april and it's like those points don't matter but good teams they get off
to hot starts and if they can sustain it through like december like they'll bank enough points
where there'll be a playoff team can you bring up the standings from last season because because i
want to point something out about how important points are early in the season like there's there's
process versus results right ideally you'd like to be playing well and have the results reflected
it doesn't always work that way so to be in the second wild card in the east you had to be the
The Habs were 40-31-11, so they had more losses than wins,
but they're nine games above Bettman, 500.
And then what do we have in the West?
Oh, all right.
In the West, we have the Blues, 44-30-8,
so you're 14 games above Bettman, 500.
So Utah's already six games above, right?
They're eight and two, you said?
Mm-hmm.
you don't have to play very far above 500 the the rest of the way to make it
you know that's how important these games are you you can be a downright mediocre team for
literally the rest of the year you had a hot first 10 games you can be barely above mediocre
the whole rest of the way and still make it go just a bunch of six and fours yes yeah 100
100%.
Six, three, and one.
Holy shit.
Look at you hot as a pistol.
It's like the Leafs when they started the season 10-0-0 back in like 93, 94.
The rest of the season after that that no one talks about,
they were extraordinarily mediocre.
Because you're 10 games above 500 to start.
And went all the way to the Western Conference Final.
You got 20 out of 20.
All right.
Take your foot off the gas.
You don't have to floor it.
Yeah.
You know?
Why are we trying our asses off right now?
Yeah.
My back kind of hurts.
I'm sore.
Whatever.
Save it.
save it for the spring uh before we get to James Duthie one quick uh one quick note because
obviously uh we got a great interview with him coming up so you can't cover everything in the
show but it is worth mentioning that uh the NHL has suspended uh former Caps assistant coach Mitch
Love uh for the remainder of the season he will be eligible to apply for reinstatement at the start
of the 26-27 season subject to certain conditions we don't know what those conditions are we don't
know anything about the investigation, but we know that it had something to do with allegations
of domestic violence in some sort of capacity. The Capitol said the organization is committed
to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability. Mitch Love had not been with
the team dating back to development camp in July, although he had been on Carberry staff for two
years uh and he was um interviewed for head coaching jobs uh before these allegations came
up and he uh for his end vehemently denies it but said as he respects the nhl's decision
and so that's where we stand this isn't the sort of decision you arrive at lightly um there's too
much speculation going on out there but this was uh well the the nhl shouldn't have done it
how do you know based on what let's vibes this is not a vibes decision yeah like listen i'm not
the most trusting person of the nhl and the people who run it but they don't do this sort of thing
for nothing so let them cook one thing i think the nhl uh is not going to tolerate is any sort of
risk you know i think after kyle beach the that situation i think things really changed and as
much as you might be upset with the the the way that chicago was fined or what they were fined or
how it was dealt with or whatever what's been incredibly clear since is everybody associated
has had to you know apply for reinstatement uh you know do the do a whole bunch of like speaking
things and going to class and things like that i don't know in mitch love's situation what the
particulars are but what i do know is the nhl has zero capacity for any sort of public pr risk here
and so i think they they whatever it was this is the objectively smart thing to do right just
say yeah that we're we're not gonna we'll have a look at this in a year and we'll talk they're
being proactive i don't know the that's good to see yeah i don't know the legalities uh of all of
it because like i don't know well they have the right to spend any when they want well yeah but
But, like, if the reasons are not legitimate,
wouldn't that person have every right to be like,
well, I'm suing you?
Yeah, and you'll never work in the league again.
That is true.
And so that is why I think in that particular instance,
you would probably never see somebody do that.
And, you know, I don't know where this goes,
but I do think it's good to see.
I just want to leave it at this
because I don't like speculating on stuff like this.
I think it's good to see the league being proactive and I have to people like well you
never compliment the league actually I will uh that is that is the right thing to do there's
three things because we do have a couple minutes oh we do okay I thought we had no time there's
three uh things that happened over the weekend that I think just need some love one New Jersey
Devils eight wins in a row man fuck them they're one of those came against these fuck them Adam's
right yeah no they're uh they're great they're great they're great what a wagon wagon yeah um
i still i i don't know i stand by my washington pick for the metro just because people got
so mean about it but um the devils were a bit of a show me team um because again i really like the
construction of that team but a lot of it was in theory because they hadn't all played together at
the same time now they are oh shit like you're all in a lot of trouble they're extremely good
yeah a lot of jack hughes love going on right now i can see a situation where jack hughes wins the
heart trophy this season because devils win that division he has a million points he has a million
moments like he had over the weekend uh against the abs which are like if you want a test of how
good you are right now that's a good team to face and they showed up and they won that game um adam
what are your thoughts on steve calling them a show me team what are your thoughts on the rogers
service show me uh uh 250 million dollars in write-offs once they shut it down yeah
it's the worst name and probably the worst uh subscription service ever posited to the canadian
public it's like hey you guys can get hey you know what you can get with this modern family
what else can we get nothing how do you screw up a streaming service well i and they were a bit
ahead of the game too they didn't but they didn't have an app and they called it show me s-h-o-m-i
nobody got it like what are you doing that's that to me is that show me service was a like that's
a marketing meeting where a bunch of over marketers were like oh well we gotta feel techie with it
right we gotta do bold colors right purple yeah and then they made it more expensive than crave
And Crave, at that point, was $4.99 a month.
And Crave is...
Has HBO.
Good.
Yeah.
Crazy, huh?
A second thing over the weekend, the movable force met the stoppable object, and the Calgary Flames played the New York Rangers.
And the Calgary Flames whooped the New York Rangers' butt.
Man!
And I have yet to see the Rangers look like a good team in the last two weeks.
Yeah.
Maybe you shouldn't have blown up everything because people were fighting in the locker room.
Yeah, thanks, Rangers, for warming up the coldest team in the NHL
right before they play the Leafs.
Thanks for nothing, you big-punch jerks.
Also, they're in trouble.
Yeah.
I think it's officially, for them, it's trouble season.
Well, it's because of last season, right?
Yes, exactly.
No BS, a new captain, and JT Miller's already like,
okay, now I'm mad.
And you show up in Calgary, and you lay the—
To the Flames, you can't score!
They're the worst team in the NHL.
Like, right now, and you lay an egg.
Hey, you know what else is crazy?
five goals by calgary rasmus anderson on my fantasy team no points ah the fuck man isn't
that the worst that's the fucking worst that's what everybody's i'm trading rasmus anderson
all right this team can't score and even when they do score he can't i think coming off of
that performance that we talked about last episode where they admitted we didn't show up early enough
yes we took the san jose sharks lightly and we lost the game and then you go and you face an
even worse team in the standings a team that's even playing worse than the sharks and there
again you get beat yes every team wants to face the rangers right now because if you're struggling
you're gonna get going against the rangers and it's disgusting yep yep agreed jesse uh i'm trying
to see uh who leads them in scoring and i want to see how horrific the number is uh
adam fox leads them in scoring with seven points in 10 games which is good news that's good for him
their leading uh forward is our timmy panarin who is playmaker first difficult to be a playmaker
on a team that doesn't score two goals five assists seven points in a contract year just
on my fantasy team money incinerator and you got adam good for you uh i'm gonna keep bringing it
up until you start scoring fucking mad no you're right you're right and their leading goal scorers
taylor radish as we all expected ugly who and everyone's like oh yeah look at him go like those
four goals are all he's got that's not a good thing no if taylor radish is leading your team
in scoring and he's not this isn't like juniors or something then that's a bad thing remember what
the game we were talking about i think was three or four games then it was like oh sam carrick had
a great game for the rangers yeah like sam that's a bad thing yeah okay alexi lafreniere oh ah yeah
in 10 games this is shocking stuff in 10 games one goal two assists for three points
four penalty minutes minus 10
minus 10 minus 10 there's two guys who are minus four two guys who are minus five uh
Zibanejad is minus eight, which is also bad.
Minus 10.
Like, he's so much worse than even his peers.
Wow.
What a bummer.
Like, he was a rock star in the playoffs a couple years ago.
I loved watching him play.
Last season rolls around, and I'm like,
there's my breakout player right there.
It's not even a choice.
He was so good.
he's gonna ride that and he's been a ghost uh jesse yeah how long do we give lafreniere before
we have the conversation oh my like what 2020 draft is the one he was drafted first overall
it's uh let me just check the calendar 2025 it's beyond time to have that like slivkovsky has at
least established himself as a very good first line player yeah yeah no it's a good line if
you're expecting him to be the first overall pick and be in the conversations with those other guys
who are selected for us overall that's out the window like i think we all know that you got to
redo your expectations on him and now it's like okay just be a solid top six player and that sort
of thing you're not some superstar talent like that's that's long gone here let me throw this
at you so looking at the 2020 draft alexi lafreniere or quentin byfield i'll take byfield
yeah lafreniere or tim stutzler oh don't think too hard why i would take oh my god i take stutzler
Yeah, but then I've got to deal with having Tim Stutzla on my team.
Yeah, but he's on your team.
Nah, that's true.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm just being mean to Ottawa.
Lafreniere or Lucas Raymond?
I'll give you Raymond all day.
Lafreniere or Jake Sanderson?
Sanderson.
Okay, now we have our first one.
Lafreniere or Jamie Drysdale?
Definitely Lafreniere.
Yeah.
Alexander Holtz, Jack Quinn.
Yeah, yeah.
Now...
Michael Medulla was in that draft, wasn't he?
Lafreniere...
Yeah, but he's way down.
Lafreniere or Marco Rossi?
I'll probably still take Lafreniere.
I would take Rossi.
It's a conversation.
It's close.
Lafreniere or...
I don't think we need to do the whole first round.
No.
Three more.
Trust me.
Trust me.
Trust me.
Trust me.
Trust me.
Cole Perfetti?
Yeah.
I'd take Cole Perfetti.
Lafreniere or Yaroslav Askarov?
Lafreniere.
Askarov's not established.
He hasn't done anything.
No, but it's a conversation.
He hasn't done anything.
Anton Lindell?
No.
Seth Jarvis
Seth Jarvis
probably should have
went like third
yeah guys are rock star
wow
he's having a great season
did you have one more to go
yes last thing
yes I did
we got
Dylan Holloway
who went 21st
would you rather
oh god guys
Jesus
can we please move on
Igor Chinnikov
last thing
because this is also
a Sharks podcast
the San Jose Sharks
had the most remarkable
OT performance
in the history of time
so they blew a lead
They're the Sharks.
Expected a blow lead.
They were up 5-3 on the Minnesota Wild.
They allowed two third-period goals.
They get to overtime.
Macklin Celebrini ends up with a hat trick on the OT winner.
But the thing that led to the OT winner with Macklin Celebrini was Timothy Lilligren, Alexander Wenberg, and William Eklund being out there for the entire 3-47 up until Celebrini hit the ice.
They were pinned.
And I don't think they touched the puck if you watch that whole three minutes.
They didn't touch the puck once.
And they were able to not allow a goal in that OT.
Celebrina comes off the bench.
First shot.
Nailed goal.
Sharks win.
Great win for them.
Celebrina's got six goals.
He looks like he's arrived as one of the best players in the league already.
Great win for the Sharks in OT there.
What an effort by Lilligren, Wenberg, and Askarov in goal there.
And who was the third?
Eklund.
Did you see Lilligren set up Michael Mises' first career NHL goal?
Yes.
What a play.
Well, the stats guys were right.
What a play from Timoth.
I also want to throw out there,
do you know what that led to for the Wild side?
What's that?
All the captains and Bill Guerin met yesterday, like in person.
Slow start.
Slow start for the Wild.
I thought that loss, that's a pretty big stamp on the Wild.
That sucks.
they just spent a lot of money to be better than this yeah that's a tough one all right so with

day every day now until december 31st at participating a and w locations in ontario
certified beauties more of hockey's greatest untold stories by one james sir james duffy
uh of ontario james listen i can't find my camera this is tv which is my this is a red
light that goes yeah there's no there's no red light so you're number one where's my tally light
where's my tally light james we got to say listen uh you're probably sick of hearing this stuff
uh but we have watched you since you started uh when you were doing like sports center stuff like
that adam's trying to call you old i'm trying to say no inspirational is that i would before i
could remember yeah and it's so it's an honor white days it's an honor to have you in you know
my tube television with antennas um no it's it's it's amazing and i think uh you're a canadian
treasure and this is the follow-up to another book that you wrote a few years ago so can we
talk a little bit about like some of the names on the back of this of great stories that you have
can you talk a little bit about how this project sort of came together uh and then we're gonna ask
you a bunch of other stuff too but i just i got this is like if the forward is by sydney crosby
yeah yeah yeah like come on now i will say i look i don't want to it's not like sydney crosby sat
down at his typewriter certified beauties a forward by sydney crosby he actually this and
this is funny so Sid was in the first book and I'm so thankful for all the guys who like it you
know what it's like trying to get guests and it's hard to get guys and for something a project like
this you need to get a guy kind of for an hour alone not like five minutes after the rink after
a game or after practice at the rink and so when Sidney agreed to be in the first book and he ends
up in like two or three chapters uh I never I ended up interviewing him uh in Pittsburgh but
that was sort of a tv thing where we i showed him the chapters and we went over the chapters to make
sure everything was kosher but i never interviewed him for the book he would send me voice memos
so i he would be on the road like on on the team bus and be like hey hey james i thought of another
story for you and then he'd tell the story on the voice memo and just send me the voice memo
and so with with the forward to this book once uh i spoke to him and he agreed to do the forward
he did a similar thing he did like a 10 minute voice memo and i i just typed it out and you
know uh added a few words when sentences weren't complete or whatever like that but uh yeah it was
super super super kind of him to do it i just i first up i i love that you say that you know
we have to work hard to get guests we don't get them here uh we're the we're the ignored uh ugly
stepchild of toronto media or canadian media so we don't get a lot of these guests so um i gotta
ask because we we had this conversation i think late last season guys what's sydney crosby like
because we don't know a whole heck of a lot about him outside of the ring well look first of all
this is one of my pet peeves when like reporters say guys are jerks or whatever because i don't
think we know anything about them from post-game scrums or whatever a guy might not treat you right
or might not like a question you ask but you really know have any idea what he's like away
and i'll i'm i don't pretend to be close friends with sydney crosby i've obviously i've interviewed
him at tons of times over the years and had conversations with him but i don't hang out
and go fishing with him and out in halifax and his cottage or anything like that but i would say
i think he's truly exactly what he appears to be one of the single nicest guys in hockey there's a
story in one of my other books and he probably and the the thing is he never wanted this to get
out but the guy who makes my suits for tsn uh is a guy named dom in montreal who also happens to
make sydney's suits and there's a story in a couple books this kid jonathan pitcher who had
this rare horrible skin disease we did a documentary on him some of your listeners might have we
You remember that, yep.
The Butterfly Child.
When he was invited to present at the NHL Awards
a few years before he passed away,
and Sidney called my guy Dom
and got him to make him a suit
because all Jonathan ever wanted
was to look like a real hockey player growing up.
And Sidney read that
and went and had him make the custom suit for Jonathan
so he could wear a thing.
Wow.
And again, without telling any,
it was only Dom, the suit guy, who told me this.
You know, it wasn't...
He didn't want that to get to you.
kind of stuff that he does you know behind the scenes all the time so i think he's uh he's one
of the favorite people that i've met in my whatever 30 plus years of doing this stuff that's great
yeah yeah so yeah good but that's the and that's the thing about hockey there's a lot of guys
like that and one of the things i one of the many reasons i did this book was you know we say hockey
players are boring which they are in intermission interviews which you know we're guilty of running
all the time and mostly they suck right but you kind of do it because you might get one out of 20
where a guy says something good so you have to run them but if you get them away from the rink you
know in a setting where you're having a beer or something they all have stories because i don't
know i just think hockey as a sport is one of the great story generating sports because of its
gladiator nature and the way the stuff that happens away from the rink and because the season's so
long so my my philosophy has always been like every guy in the league even if they're the most boring
guy in the league has probably two or three amazing stories and i only need one for these
books so that's what you do was there anyone who you talked to who kind of took you down a path you
didn't expect at all like you thought it was gonna be really funny and you know maybe it was it took
a serious turn or the opposite you you know they're robocop and and and they just break into
some sort of story yeah uh i'm trying to think of one example because the one thing that's interesting
when you write the book is i don't know what stories i'm gonna get that's not 100 true because
sometimes I'll like a lot of the generating stories for the books are I talk to one guy
and he says hey you got to talk to this guy because this guy's got a story for you I was
at the masters last year and I was almost done the book and Graham DeLette says to me you got
to talk to Ray Whitney and I'm like why he goes well he's got a crazy story about shitting his
pants during a game which is you know so this is the level this is the highbrow content that you
get in certified beauties but i have to say i was intrigued because i do like i do like i like to be
surprised as a reader and i like there to be completely immature stupid content like that
and then on the next page i have a very serious story like i think that story comes maybe a chapter
after there's a story about daryl sittler and borya salming who were weren't really great
friends when they played together but became best friends after they retired and so when I called
Daryl to get a story to your question you know I thought it would be some funny story and he wanted
to tell the story of how close he and Borya became after they retired and then that whole experience
of getting Borya to the hall of fame weekend you know basically two weeks before he passed and
everything that went into that and how much that moment meant to Daryl and so on so there yeah
There's an example where, you know, I thought I might get something, some goofy Ty Domi story, and I get Daryl pouring his heart and soul out about how much he loved Boria.
Jess?
Yeah, the emotional side of these guys is just something that you don't get in the scrums.
You don't get from hockey players at all.
I assume talking to them, they kind of, this is their opportunity to express something that they don't get to do in their normal media with the Leafs or with the media.
So I assume some of them are just thankful for the opportunity to talk to you
and share these sorts of stories.
Yeah, I think in some cases, yes.
I'm thinking of one from the first book where I approached Matty Nickel,
who's a famous trainer, right, who trains a lot of the guys with Gary Roberts.
And I just happened to run into him, I think, at Grey Cup
because he was working with the Ticats and just told him I was doing a book.
And he told me a story about Ray Emery.
And, you know, I knew Ray but didn't know him super well.
You know how tough he was and everything.
but this was this was a story about you know Ray's and he was Maddie was telling me how when
Ray had the hip thing like he was done like he was done like there was no way he was coming back
nobody comes back from that and the surgery and just the way he rehabbed him and how Ray didn't
talk to him for the first three months and Maddie thought he hated him but then once he let him in
he was like the greatest friend he ever had in his life right so things like that where I get
those are my favorite parts Jesse where I get surprised about a guy you know to to another
side of them um but yeah it's really it you're right it's i think guys do like the they get so
sick of those you can see it in like austin matthews eyes yeah no i'm standing there
am i annoying you right now right yes the answer is yes so i feel like your book is an outlet for
a lot of these guys where it's like i can sit down have a long-form conversation and actually
show the world who i am right i think that's why the book's so cool but yeah i gotta say james you
To add to Jesse's point there, I think there's only a particular type of person who could pull this off.
And you're going to hate where I'm going with this because I can already tell we've just met, but I know you're going to hate this.
I have to compliment you, and I think that's why you're going to hate it.
You don't have to.
Because your ability as a host to bring out the best, whether it's a panel or an interview or in a TV is really about moments, right?
It's about things that you can hang on to.
And, you know, I'm going to I'm just going to give people an example.
So James signed the book that he brought for all of us.
And my specific I hope you don't mind me reading this is Adam.
My wife always used to listen to you on Kiss and loved you.
Please don't take her for me.
She's all I have.
Thanks so much for having me.
And you do an awesome job.
But that's true.
That's that's actually a plea.
It's not anything heartfelt.
What your ability to instantly warm people up to a subject and instantly warm up to that subject, that's two things at once, is what's so, I think, incredible about your career and what you're able to do with those TSN panels, be it hockey or the Masters.
And I know Jesse's got questions about that.
This book doesn't happen if you don't have those skills.
and I'm wondering has that always been a feature of your life people is that's just something that
people have always sort of opened up to you or is that something you developed over you know many
many years working in this industry no I like I don't think I have any particular talent at it I
think maybe maybe there's a little bit of trust trust factor that I've been doing it so long that
I don't you know haven't burned anybody that maybe they trust me and they know what's going
in a book and the other thing is I'm pretty look there's no there's no gotchas in these books
uh you know connor bedard or uh matthew kachuk or uh macklin celebrini i'm just looking at the
name connor mcdavid because i don't remember it connor mcdavid's not going to pick up this book
and go damn him right uh because for the most part too when they tell me a story sometimes the
stories are like about like there's a great mcdavid dry saddle story in here but it's not
their story i have and i never talked to either one of them about it it's a story uh that i and
you get them from different sources so my my daughter's boyfriend plays in this beer league
in new market that is a really good beer league he plays for nipissing university and so there's a
lot of prospects in this beer league and in the chapter the book is about him playing against
mcdavid and dry sidle uh in a beer league quarterfinal and like for the for this beer league
team then they were out like they're playing the quarterfinals they knew you know if you've seen
this probably on bar down and stuff that mcdavid shows up at this beer league once every few years
but in this case it was last summer and mcdavid had just gotten married in fact it was the tuesday
after he'd gotten married and these guys are having literally a beer in the parking lot before
their quarterfinal of beer league and they're talking about do you think there's any chance
mcdavid shows because this team is mcdavid's old buddies right from new market and they're like he
won't show he just got married and then the suv pulls into the parking lot and mcdavid gets out
and they're like oh crap and then the passenger door opens and dry saddle gets out and they're
like oh god wow right and so it tells the story and the the goalie's the other half of the story
the goalie you know a typical beer league their goalie didn't show up that night so they had to
call their other goalie who was at another rink just getting off the ice from a three-hour skate
and he picks up his phone and is like oh i can't i gotta go play holy crap it's mcdavid and dry
saddle right uh so i don't know where i went on this but i think i think it's bringing the story
Yeah. Sorry. And so I didn't, you know, that happened to just get lucky as I, you know,
it happened to be my daughter's boyfriend that was on this team. But I think the fact that it's
a book too, it makes it different for guys than, you know, than somebody asking them a question
in a scrum. I do feel there is an attachment to a book of, you know, I'm not going to blow up what
this book is, but it is lasts forever and it's history. So they will maybe feel more comfortable
in telling me things uh brady kachuk told me a story that i i was shocked he told me about uh
it's the first chapter of the book and one of my favorite ones is i don't i don't never know how
much to give away although i was just in ottawa and people were telling the entire story on the
radio but basically he thought claude geroux had played a prank on him and so to get even he went
and uh grabbed a hacksaw and cut a bunch of geroux sticks i'm not smart enough to know this but
there's a part on the shaft if you cut like a millimeter into it will basically snap it destroy
the stick so as soon as you take a shot it will snap so his idea was that Claude will go out and
practice snap four sticks in a row have a little you know freak out because Claude has a temper
everybody will laugh end of story but Claude must have grabbed a different stick for practice
Brady forgot about it and the next day they were playing the St. Louis Blues in an NHL game oh no
And on a power play in the first period,
Giroux snaps a bunch of sticks.
Oh my God.
This is in an NHL game.
And the funny thing was Brady didn't clue in
until Giroux for some reason was,
Braden Shen was on the other team,
they're old buddies,
and Giroux in his mind thought maybe Braden Shen
had messed with his sticks
and started F-ing him from the bench.
And when Kachuk heard that, he's like,
oh my god he's using these sticks in in in a game and ran to the trainer and said get rid of these
sticks and uh there's a lot more detail of the story in the book but i was like you know it does
kind of look doesn't look great that a prank ended up almost now brady played as guilty as you could
ever play guilty in a game and the sins won like eight to one okay good all right good so clude
clode forgives him but there are stories like that where i'm like wow i can't believe you're
actually telling me this to yeah right but that's that is the kind of story when he told me i'm like
that is exactly why i wrote this book to to you know get stories that hopefully take people behind
the curtain for things that they wouldn't otherwise never hear and you you didn't blow the whole story
there and i'm not going to do it either it's reveal after reveal there's some twists some
plot twists in this one yeah yeah that one's really good it's great that you got the modern
guys to get attached to this too because usually these books when they're written it's everybody
from the 60s and the 70s and the 80s but that Claude Giroux on the Senators is very recent
that's happening right now and I really wanted to do that I did that in the last book but I wanted
to do it more in this book because you're right and hockey I think hockey definitely has changed
you guys know that the greatest stories usually seem to come from you know the 70s and the 80s
when they they went out all night on the road and now mostly they they sit in their rooms and play
video games right and so maybe that was a little bit of my concern that maybe I won't be able to
get the same level of stories just because of this generation but I wanted to get you know the the
Macklin Celebrini's and uh you know the younger stars that are still in this game today and like
I said I think my theory holds true that usually you can get at least one great story from a guy
and it's not all pranks right I tell them you could tell me about your the greatest game you
ever played in uh you know even if it was in peewee i don't care it doesn't have to be the nhl
just uh it can be about anything and when you have give them an open canvas like that they
usually have a couple things to tell you it's it's subjective but what what makes you
look at a person and say that guy's a beauty what what is a beauty to you not the definition just
what are they to you i mean i think i just stole it from uh and i didn't have it called when i was
writing the first book i think it was called hockey's greatest untold stories which is the
sort of byline here but i thought that was a horrible name for a book and i realized in
listening to the tapes of all the interviews that in every interview somebody was saying
oh you got you know darcy hordachuk that guy's a beauty and paul bissonette that guy's a beauty and
todd simpson that guy's a beauty and on and on and on and so i figured that was the good so i just
think it's I know that's a wide scoping definition it can apply to a lot of things I think for the
most part it applies in hockey to a guy who's just an absolute an utter character right although it
can be a guy who's maybe not a character and is just like pours heart and soul into maybe isn't
the greatest player but blocks 15 shots a game I think it's a kind of a wide definition Steve but
For the most part, I think in this book, it's guys who, if you sat down at a bar with them, could entertain you for about four hours with, you know, wild stories about, you know, the way they played the game, the way they acted around the game.
I'm definitely not a beauty, by the way.
if this helps you with the definition i just i don't think that i like when i compare myself
and my little sheltered terrible boring life to what these guys do and have have done in their
lives uh uh yeah i don't think i qualify i i don't know i think you sound like a guy in the
middle of a book tour i had to do that last year and it was difficult man they're weird they're
definitely weird uh you know it's it's first of all I only went to one book signing in my life I
was 10 years old my dad took me to this Tony Gabriel who was a tight end for the Ottawa Rough
Riders wrote a book called Double Trouble and I went to Saint Laurent Shopping Center in Gloucester
and got the book signed for me and I remember there was like only two people there and I'm
in my world Tony Gabriel was the greatest athlete in the world and now you know I experience that
sometimes no people are great when they show up but uh they say funny things to you i has had a
guy the other day i was doing a signing and the guy said oh man you're you look you look much
better in person man you're you're better looking in person and i that's a nice compliment but then
i thought to myself how hideous am i on television like do i make people turn away and go oh good god
i can't look at him anymore yes had that we had that yeah uh many a time yeah i had somebody
actually come up to me in a bar where steve was steve was there this uh and grabbed my stomach
and said you know like i'm starting to notice on television because i was doing bt at the time and
then i was like jesus dude he's like yeah you have a beer you do a great job and then he grabbed
your stomach he goes this has to go yeah that's right steve wasn't your costco book signing where
nobody came because you need a costco membership to get inside yeah everyone's like i can't go to
i did two costco signings which is why i haven't done a third costco signing and this guy in an
la king's jacket comes up to me and identifies himself as tyler toffoli's dad and we spoke for
five minutes because no one else was there and then i go uh hey do you want a book and he goes
oh no uh thanks i'm good yeah and it walks away i've had a few of those i had one the other day
where you know there was a like a decent amount of people at the beginning but it doesn't take
that long to sign and so it clears out and you're supposed to be there for an hour and a half or
something so it gets a little thin and this guy walked into the store and he's like whoa james
nothing man i've watched you forever this is awesome oh you got another book out wow beauties
i love hockey stories this is amazing and then the the girl from indigo sit next to me he's like
how much and she goes whatever 27.95 or whatever it is 32.95 and he goes whoa i'm gonna have to
pass i love you but not that much i mean i love you man but 28 28 bucks i ain't doing that that's
already the cost of my subscription every month jesse i know you gotta ask yeah you got a big
question you got you've done the sports thing that i want to do at least one point in my life
and that's go to the masters right and not only have you gone to the masters you've hosted the
masters right the tsn coverage and all that what is that like is it truly as magical as it seems
in the aura that they give it i just need to know everything about yeah it's it's probably when
people ask me my favorite assignment it's really hard to pick because I'm lucky enough to do a
bunch of really cool things I always kind of dabble between the world juniors which I love
every year uh and and the masters and it's hard to pick like it's like picking your your favorite
child which I have one but I can't say it publicly yeah but uh that's fair no uh so I I Jesse it's
like it's it's time to work because we're there like 8 a.m till 10 p.m every night but it's like
this little piece of heaven it's the only i always say it's one of the few places in the world
that usually you go to place and you've seen a million pictures on instagram or whatever
and it it's hard to meet expectations right masters is the one thing if you talk to anybody
who's gone there that somehow surpasses expectations it's just this little perfect
place and even behind the scenes everything is perfect like there's not a you know a piece of
straw in the ground or a piece of garbage anywhere it's it's funny the first time i went in 2002 i'll
try not to make this too long i know you guys know no no but you actually got to get back to
the things you're supposed to talk about but uh i had always envisioned augusta national as this
golf course in the middle of sort of the country that you would drive down this winding country
lane with georgia pines and all of a sudden you'd be at you know magnolia lane and augusta national
well augusta national is off the seediest crappiest american street in the world like there's a hooters
basically uh maybe the hooters is closed now but there's a hooters like a one 330 yard drive from
the uh uh from the driving range essentially and so the first morning when i was driving there in
2002 and i was so excited and we turn onto this strip and there's literally at the hooters there's
a hooters girl in her hooters get up with a hula hoop and she's spinning the hula hoop on the side
of the road going come on in for our master's hooters special and i'm like this is not what
i envisioned as a young child going to augusta national and then like literally a block later
you turn on to magnolia lane right but lately augusta national is like built buying up the
whole town so it's i think a lot of those things are sort of disappearing but it's a it's a special
special special place and never ever gets old bob weeks so i get to work with that it's been to like
about 30 of them and he feels the same way i do you get that same buzz when we show up on monday
morning every single year so get your year you can sleep on our couch if you can find your way
to get a and the other thing i tell people get a practice round pass because once the tournament
starts it's kind of hard to see there's no you can't bring your phone there's no electronic
scoreboard so if you're trying to watch you know tiger woods or scotty sheffield you're 10 people
deep and you kind of see the top of his hat but if you want to practice round you can bring your
camera so you can actually get pictures and memories it's a little less crowded than there
you can see all the players play so and i think the practice round passes are probably easier to
get get to than the rounds passes so go to a practice round i've always just appreciated the
extent they go to keep that magic too like the underground tunnels they've built just not
transport all the food and also you don't see it so everything's pristine yeah it's uh it's it's
like the truman show yeah in a way yeah just everything there is this alternate universe
that only exists in this few mile space in augusta georgia so it's really weird what's the best item
on the menu oh i don't know like week c and graham to let eat these uh pimento cheese sandwiches but
i find them horrendous i'm i'm the egg salad is very good the other thing is cj always says the
egg you can't bring your own food in there you're not so usually i load up on protein bars and stuff
when i'm going to do a five-hour show and you can't so you literally eat there there's like
a chicken salad and an egg salad and i'll eat 40 of them during during the week you have no and if
you get caught smuggling food in there it's like smuggling if you have your phone in there they
will escort you out yeah yeah immediately right well i of course of course you know i the other
thing i think i want to i hope you don't let me ask a question oh follow it up follow up have you
played it you've played it right yes oh come on are you serious so this is like okay the biggest
db move i pull i love golf right it's my other thing that i do uh uh i i golf like i'm not great
at it but i'm i love it so much and if i ever get you know paired up with a couple of randos
playing golf uh this is what i always do i always go you know we're walking down like the fourth
fairway and i'm like so what's it what's like the favorite course you guys ever played and they'll
be like oh you know i played wooden sticks or uh you know tpc or something or some some some guy
might name somewhere down in carolina and inevitably they'll go what about you and i go
augusta national it's just it's such a jerk move uh for your listeners there is a draw every year
yes for the media and about 20 guys get to play on the monday and so the morning after somebody
wins the masters you get to play with sunday sunday pin placements and everything and you
play from the the members tees which is pretty much where tiger would have won from say in 97
when he first won um but you know because of technology some of the holes they're moved like
100 and 150 yards back but it's very playable actually it's very open i was just nervous as
all heck yeah when i played i won the year that danny willett won so i mean eight or nine years
ago and i also i got to the i'll tell my quick master story i'm sorry if you've heard this but
everybody else leaves my crew leaves we rent a house we don't buy a house like you guys we rent
a house and uh and uh everybody's left in the morning and you get this little beautiful pass
it says show up at magnolia lane at like 8 30 a.m or whatever and back then i wasn't as crazy
about golf so i put away my clubs in october and i just pulled them off my shelf and brought them
to augusta in the chance that i win the draw so i opened my bag i'm waiting for my cab to come and
there's i have one ball in my bag i'm like oh my god i have one ball i'm going to augusta national
so i asked the cab driver could you just take me to is there a golf store open they're like no the
only thing's open is walmart and at walmart all they had was this was only kind of an inside golf
thing but they only had was top flight hot xls which are not like known as you find a free one
they're not a good golf ball sorry top flight and so i showed up at augusta national with a dozen
top flight hot xls and then you get to the range and they have all these pro v's with augusta
national logos on them whoa and you have all the caddies are standing there waiting in their whites
wherever you take your spot on the range that's your caddy and i sort of said to the caddy hey
i got a bit of a ball situation here and the caddy kind of rolled his eyes and turned his back to me
knowing that i would pile like 20 of these augusta balls in
but it truly was one of the most special four hours of my life just because i
growing up in ottawa i never thought i would ever get to the masters let alone
stand and and play on the masters so it was pretty surreal unbelievable well i i gotta i i i am
gonna veer off the masters i apologize but i took too much no it's magic i love your listeners who
hate golf no no um but that's i mean that is why we love sports right it's it's it's moments like
that and and i think you know one of the things that i have to say about you and the team that
you work with and the team that you've you've worked with over the years is to a person uh at
least it's filtered back to us um everybody has the same sort of attitude that you do cj chris
johnson always says it's the best team he's ever worked on um i know from i know from you know when
I was in radio college for a year before I dropped out because I was already on the radio,
that people interviewed you for their school projects.
And they talked about how great you were.
They talked about how great Jay Onright was.
You know, Bob McKenzie behind the scenes reached out to us out of the blue for no reason other
than to say, hi, and I think you guys are doing a great job.
And we almost fell out of our chairs.
There's just something about that group, that culture at TSN that you guys seem to really
take care of each other um there's also seems to be a lot of camaraderie you can see it come out
in like you know the trade deadline show and and and free agency and that sort of thing what do
you attribute that to why is you know tsn is such a huge part of how a lot of us grew up and how
we're still growing up i'm trying to what do you attribute that to uh i think the way you said it
without being hokey it is it is people and i don't know how you know our bosses have been able to do
over the years but we've been able to attract and keep good people right even when times have
sucked you know when we lost the rights uh uh we've been able to keep those people and that's
not just the guys you see on the panel but like the producers behind the scenes you know steve
dryden this guy worked his ass off on hockey for forever he's still the quiz master he's semi
retired now and you know mike lane who is our producer and bill dots and jeff model i'm gonna
i sit here now i sound like i'm doing an oscar speech um but literally the camera people the
producers the it's i've whenever someone's asked asked me why i love working that place it's
because you got really good people who aren't just good at what they do but they're nice you know
you want to work with nice people too right yeah and you know we back to the golfing i'm golfing
with randall's everybody will say so you know who are the assholes at tsn right and i can't i can't
there aren't any and i'm not just saying that because i work for the company like everybody
i could go through every on-air person one by one at tsn and say that like they're truly
really nice nice people i can't not think of a dick
they're all beauties yeah they are and and that's what makes it that's what makes it a great place
that's why i've stayed there for almost 30 years now and uh that's why we you know i think we've
survived in pretty tough time for media that's i don't know why everyone wants to know the answer
to that but when i was at sports night what's up with kipper yeah what's what's that what's that
kiprios's deal i'm like well he called me a loser on tv once but i like him very much yeah you know
yeah yeah nick's great yeah it's great he's what one of the best guests we ever had probably just
behind james just by and by the way bob bobby mac wasn't blowing smoke because i've i didn't get to
play with him this year but i play a lot of golf with bobby and sean mckenzie and i remember having
a conversation a couple years ago where both mckenzie's were saying that uh you know dangle's
the probably the most talented guy out there in sports media right now and what they're doing is
like kind of the future of no they were they were both going on about what you were doing and your
you guys network and everything and how it was kind of taken over the world so and i'm not blowing
smoke because i said that's bullshit i he is not more talented than me how could you say that
The book is called Certified Beauties,
More of Hockey's Greatest Untold Stories.
James Duffy, and let me just drop this name again,
forward by Sidney Crosby via voice memo,
which I think is fantastic.
And I think that adds an extra little bit to it.
James, it's been a real pleasure to meet you,
to interview you.
Please don't be a stranger
because as far as we're concerned,
you're a national treasure
and you are welcome here anytime.
Oh, thank you guys so much for having me.
And I'm going to move in to this room.
There's room.
I live up in Aurora, so I'm not close enough to work.
So the fact that this is an actual apartment,
is there an actual bed in here if I wanted to stay?
There's a couch.
Or like crash if I had a bad night down there?
There's a couch underneath a mural of us.
You're welcome.
No, thanks so much for having me on, guys.
You do an awesome job.
