The Steve Dangle Podcast.
With your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
Also, Boston Pizza on Wednesday.
Yeah.
It's already this Wednesday.
You can join us there.
Boston Pizza, Stouffville.
1060 Hoover Park Drive.
Show.
Around 6.30.
Going to be hanging, talking, watching.
Steve's going to be streaming.
I will be.
And Canada versus Sweden.
That'll be fun.
I'm excited.
Vili Hainola, by the way, the only active D-man in the NHL
who has finished to not play on the Four Nations roster.
Cycled through it at some point.
Is Rick Bonas the coach of Team Finland?
Yeah, I think it might be.
That's pretty crazy.
That poor guy, man.
Yeah, no kidding.
No kidding.
Oh, my God.
Anyway, so listen, here's how we're going to do today's show.
Today's show is going to be, we're going to be looking into the past.
We're looking into the, how has, you know, how did this weekend go?
What kinds of things can we deduce or whatever?
Tomorrow's about the future.
Tomorrow is about the four nations.
Tomorrow is about the, you know, what else is happening during, but we've got, we've
got a bit of a weird schedule this week.
And I think it's worth mentioning off the top that we have a show today.
We will have a show late Friday, which we'll do a lot late Friday, late tomorrow, Tuesday.
Start over.
Show today.
Yep.
Show late Tuesday.
Got it.
What's tomorrow?
Tomorrow's Tuesday.
Okay.
Yes.
And then we'll have a show Wednesday, which is the live show.
Yes.
Yes.
And then we will also have VIP and a Friday show.
There you go.
So you'll technically, not technically, be getting an episode every day this week.
Almost, basically.
Basically.
yeah and and if you if you if you're opining if you're needing an episode thursday guess what cj
show it's great it's done bang uh and also steve and jesse will be streaming this week as i said
steve oh yeah streaming from boston pizza jesse on thursday we'll be doing the usa finland game
so yeah because we're gonna split the other games and i was looking at the schedule it's like okay
so if we're splitting them there's only three that are guaranteed to be not canada yeah so you
get two and i got one yeah and all the rest are canada games and the tournament like it's gonna
go by so quick oh i was looking i was like oh it's just it's just a couple games everyone plays
each other and then championship yes and it's gonna fly by and we'll be back to the nhl again
and i don't know i and i don't want again try not to look forward try to look back actually
we're trying to go back into the past but i do want to say i cannot believe that there are people
who still don't think that this tournament's gonna rock like i am so excited for this puck
drops i think everybody gets excited and we're just excited to see that oh it's mcdavid and
Harner on the same line.
This is incredible.
Here's the power play one at practice.
Makar, McDavid, Reinhardt, McKinnon, Crosby.
That's Team Canada power play from Broussard, Quebec this morning.
Could be better.
Could be better.
So I'm pretty pumped about it, but we could talk about that later.
I also love everybody's predictions that all these guys were going to pull out of the tournament beforehand.
One.
I love, love, love that they were wrong.
And I was like, of course they're wrong.
They don't know what it's like to be an athlete and want to win everything all the time.
Who know?
So, let's talk about the first half of this year.
The All-Star break is the unofficial half.
We know that there's obviously trade deadline and all that stuff.
But we've seen a lot from these teams early on.
And we're going to get a nice little break here for a lot of these players, right?
There's half the NHL are Canadian players.
Only 23 of them are going to this tournament.
So, a lot of guys are going to be sitting.
A lot of Americans are going to be sitting, watching, going on vacation, doing what they do.
And I wanted to start with this, just one question.
Okay.
Let's start with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Who on the Toronto Maple Leafs needs this break the most?
Who will benefit the most from this break in play?
Anyone who's 30 and up.
So that's quite a few guys.
Name a player.
Stop.
No 25 questions this.
Sir.
Joseph Wall.
Joseph Wall.
Steve Dangle.
Why is that?
He's played an unbelievable amount of hockey compared to what he's used to.
He was never really meant to have this run of games this season,
and he has, and he's played well, and that's enough.
Stollers is back.
This break comes at a really good time for him.
Wohl has been great, but not otherworldly,
which we know he's capable of.
Get a few weeks off.
and you get to split games hopefully the rest of the way and then we'll figure out who the
playoff starter is jesse blake who's your pick for needs this break the most i don't know how
the answer can't be morgan riley in that he's played like pretty well last like couple games
so maybe the break's coming at an inconvenient time but you have to look at his entire first
half of the season and not just the last couple games in that he's struggled the most out of any
leaf with the highest expectations on him and this three weekish break two and a half week
break's got to be the big reset for morgan riley and uh continue what you did in vancouver
get better over the break get healthy if that's the case if you're really not healthy if you're
just tired because you have a busy personal life and get some sleep you know i just hope there's
a big reset for morgan riley and the back half of the season isn't about morgan riley and the
conversation is around a seven and a half million dollar defenseman we focus on the actual like
important things producer drew who is a uh a new dad again um he was like man morgan riley's been
really good recently i go yeah wait a sec i'll bet any money his kid was born five or six months
ago and he looks it up oh yeah six yeah but guys guys go through this all the time yeah like i
don't even he's not even like the only guy on the team who's had a baby this year um so like it's
not an excuse no but it's understandable and now use this to get back to where you should be i like
that yeah I like that I'm gonna go with Max Domi oh damn I think Max Domi could use a break that's
a good answer man I think he's played better while he's played with Austin Matthews which is a role
he should be in and has not been in the entire season he needs to be in a role with with star
players he's a player that supports star players that's what he does um well you you you go you go
like this with your nose Steve you you you bunch your nose up like that clearly Max Domi is not a
player and not paid to be a player that drives his own mind and that that is so that is his role
and what have the Leafs done this entire year they've tried to make him drive his own mind
and so I feel like there's a he started started hot I think the first six games he had like six
assists and then very good got injured and then never really found the groove when he came back
I saw him play better in the first three games of this road trip I didn't love Vancouver's game for
any of them to be honest but uh it was a tight game shit happens good lord hopefully they don't
play vancouver in the play yeah man shut them all down man they have their number but i look at this
and i go okay here's a player that the reason it's a story that he hasn't played well is because
we've all seen him play better so yeah what if it's just a reset and you get a little bit maybe
he's still struggling with whatever he was fighting uh i don't know but i feel like there's
a guy that there's a mental reset that could be used i hope he uh takes two days off to veg on
the couch then he does something light on day three like like the elliptical oh you know what
i mean and then he spends the entire rest of the uh break taking 12 000 shots a day because i've
never seen an nhl player like a dude who's paid to play professional hockey uh have a shot die
like Domi's like does he have a bum
wrist that we don't know about or something
crank up the flex on your
stick by about 20 and
shoot until your arms fall
off for the next two weeks
he's got a noodle out there
and like you need to be an option to shoot
right for God's sake or he's been taken
one time if he babysits Morgan Riley's
baby he can he can get that that
that parent that that parent
forearm strength that you get from carrying
babies around all day oh there's you do
get strong there's the you know everyone knows the the curling where you're this is very difficult
to do on audio but if you if you do that the hammer curl yeah that's that's the dad muscle
right there there you go that's this guy right there yeah this is the thing i i think um i think
the leafs had a pretty damn good western road swing and as much as uh i saw a few dallas stars
writers say well it looks like this the stars look like they were thinking about vacation on
that last game or something like that and didn't they win 8-3 i i don't know it was it was just
something like there are teams out there that are like yeah that's what i wrote that's what i was
reading um i was i subscribed was it not the sharks was it not the sharks stars no no but
they played the sharks at 1-8 yeah i don't know oh that's what i read uh the point i'm saying
is that i feel like people looked at the vancouver right okay i'll show you the article if you want
to see it all right no i believe you uh i think the point is that there are um there are there
were fans who were pissed off about vancouver on saturday night and i'm less mad i'm looking at
that as an aggregate thing you are away for that long they do suck against vancouver i'll grant
you man they're really bad against vancouver they stink um it's bad but you won the first three
games of the road trip and look pretty strong in all of them and anthony stollers is back and
looking like anthony stollers have the leafs lost 3-1-3 lost 3-1-3 and then lost this one i don't
remember it's no it's ridiculous listen yeah you're right like stollers to me is the biggest story
out of all that they've been kind of winning games all year they're in this atlantic division
goo muck whatever you want to call it where they might win the division they might get a wild card
yeah like you don't know um again like i want them to be in every single game i want them to
win every game that's obviously unreasonable but all season long i've been saying all right
So this little chunk of games is over.
Now you got to ramp up.
Right now, this little chunk of games is over.
Now you got to ramp up.
So it's like, all right, we hit Halloween.
We hit American Thanksgiving.
We hit Christmas.
We this is it.
Like, this is really it.
There's seven games remaining.
Look at it that way.
It's a seven game playoff series before the trade deadline.
That's not much.
No, and I had to, that blew my mind when I was talking about that.
Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up.
Wow.
Yeah, because it's, dude, there's like a month.
It's just shy of a month until the trade deadline, but it's the shortest month.
And also there's like no games because of the Four Nation face-offs.
The Leafs have seven games left.
Your team might have less.
They have seven games left before the trade deadline.
They better win four of seven at least.
um and it needs to be their best hockey of the season until the next seven games i have a question
for you guys because we're talking about the first half of the season i like how we're going over
that great stuff adam oh thank you steve first of all you're right about the three games three
losses three wins three losses three uh three wins and then now they lost so so silly they're
guaranteed to lose against the hurricanes and blackhawks when they come back right damn we
lost in a row oh i'm ready to be mad about the blackhawks one looking at where the leafs are
in the standings right now the 68 points behind florida who's got 71 points but toronto has two
games in hand should we be disappointed with where the leafs are in the standings because of how easy
their first half schedule was if you haven't noticed if you haven't don't pay that deep
attention to the toronto maple leafs their first half schedule was very light this was the first
time all season they had three consecutive games on the road wow they hadn't had a three game road
trip all season long until this week wow now the back half of the season is chocked full of games
on the road yeah they had a very easy november where they had a weird break in the middle of
the schedule and then they had a whole bunch of home games and that was their opportunity
to take advantage of the schedule from october through to the four nations break now you got a
really tough condensed schedule with a bunch of road games from uh coming back from four nations
to the end of the season should we be disappointed that they are not higher in the standings
looking at how easy their schedule was it's tricky because they i feel like they did dominate
when their schedule was at their easiest which was november which would like cartoonishly i don't
think i've ever seen anything like it now we identified it before the season i'm like hey so
they like don't play yeah like what did you make a mistake yeah like they don't play so like it
actually hurt my videos like in the algorithm because youtube is like oh this guy just doesn't
make videos very often you abandoned your channel and i'm like no wait no no and it's it's taking
time to ramp back up yeah and then but then december comes and that's too many games they had
they played back to backs for five straight weeks which is also crazy um i think uh the injury to
stallers really hurt them because the drop off from him to whoever the third guy is is stupendous
um they've also had a lot of injuries um like i i brought up a stat in the lfr if i remember it
off the top of my head the six guys who were out there for the six on four at the end of the game
six forwards they're the leafs six top goal scorers combined they have 128 goals the rest
of the lineup has 41 yeah yeah actually the rest of the lineup has less than that
the rest of everyone who's played on the leafs of the season has 41
um all six of those guys though have missed time matthews missed like a month marner i know missed
at least one game willie missed at least one game tavaris was out two different stretches um and he
had the illness uh mcmahon was a healthy scratch at times nize has been injured twice now um who
have i missed did i miss anyone oh wait matthews yeah i think you got all the six yeah i think i
got them all yeah um all things considered i think they've done i wouldn't say like above
expectations i don't know if i'd say below expectations either they have enough games
left in the season to reclaim top spot who knows maybe all things equal they play their next two
games and they simply get those games in hand on florida and they take the top spot and it's hard
to call first place disappointing um i i go back to what i said about the leafs when there were no
expectations of them in their rookie year in the 2016-17 season the caps great playoff loss year
yes but we were talking about like coming down that stretch because the leafs weren't playing
so great but tampa had like no players left and people were like well is it really disappointing
if they don't make the playoffs this year?
And a lot of people said, well, no, because they're all children.
And mine was absolutely frigging yes.
They've been in the playoffs more days than they haven't been
for the last two months leading up to that point.
So if they don't make the playoffs, it's because they choked and they lost it.
So to me, I'll be a little disappointed if they don't get first place in the division
because they've owned it for the lion's share of this season.
The lion's share of the games that matter.
I know it's a long, wishy-washy answer to what you asked.
No, no, it's very good.
They're not bad.
Could be better.
I, for one, have been...
I think the injuries are a thing.
I think the underperformance of Morgan Rielly is a thing.
So the fact that they're...
If they're not underperforming, they're not overperforming,
they're on track.
Jake McCabe.
How many Leafs have played every game?
Very few.
I can look that up.
But, yeah, not a lot.
I don't know if it's any of them.
And, I mean, there has been a lot of shifting around.
You're talking about a team that now is trying things with the roster
that I would say they haven't been.
How many games have been played total?
Is it 55?
55, by the Leafs, yes.
So, Riley, Nylander, Lorenz are the only three that have played all 55.
Nylander's played all 55?
I could have swore he missed a game.
No, he's 55.
Oh, all right.
No, I believe you, Adam, but damn.
All right.
So I don't know.
And Riley being in that group is, I mean, so really two guys.
Yeah.
Have played every game, and it's Lorenz and Nylander.
But Adam, you're answering the question.
Yeah, the question is, essentially, if they are on track with all of that going on,
I think I'm good with it.
I do think, and I've said this before,
I think that this is a year that you need to win the division.
You need to win this division.
this is a team that's done this six times in its entire history and four of those times
happened five of those times happened before the millennium the lightning lightning four of those
times happened before 1967 and i think you've got to really consider the advantage that you have
when you have that yes they might have to play the light lightning yes they might have to play
the bruins yes they might have to play the senators who seem to have their number as well
but i don't know man it's the playoffs there are no bad teams so figure it out uh and and i think
um i think what also is playing into this guys and uh i have liked what i have seen overall i
know that there are some people that have some some fears about the scoring and stuff and i get
that uh i think they're very clearly missing a forward up front uh this team is playing a vastly
different style than they were playing last year and i think adjusting to that has been very
interesting to watch and exciting to watch and i'm kind of curious to see how it plays out in
the playoffs and also they have they took goaltending seriously this year uh and i i just
didn't see that from the previous management group and the way that that they needed to they like
you you this is a you know we're talking about a management group that has stallers and wall
both on cost-effective deals not just this year but next year too even when wall's salary is at
four million he's a he's a steal a hair over six so combined you look at and you look at this is a
team that unironically dressed eight million dollars of peter marazic and matt marie as
they're starting to good and expected to do anything right so i i just feel like that is the
oh um that is the like went out and actively got both guys like they needed them uh and that is
that's where i'm i'm i'm sort of like okay there this is going to ramp up and what we're going to
see now that seven games is going to be really interesting because i think um you're going to
need to know kind of what your you know sort of what your top six looks like you sort of know
what your bottom three looks like you need to know 15 20 games out what that third line is supposed
to look like and they better get something done this is not a we're basically there well this is
not a this is not a oh maybe we'll make a move for a forward if they go through the four they go
through that trade deadline without making a move for a centerman it will be a failure well it will
And if Yarncroke's ready to go, he's got to play all seven games.
Yeah.
Right?
I don't know that he is.
We haven't heard anything on that.
I know, like, no other fan base is staying up at night thinking about Kelly Yarncroke.
But, like, he is kind of important to this equation.
Yeah.
And if he does come back, I still think they need one.
Yeah.
Because he'll be seven games in and no training camp.
Seven games in.
And at this point in his career, I just don't think he's a center.
There you go.
Jesse, what about you?
Same question.
it uh i think i think the goal scoring the different type of hockey thing you mentioned
is important because i look at where they improved and fell from last year and just
on the goals against thing they were 21st in the league in goals against last year and they
popped up to number 12 so they're just allowing a whole bunch of less goals but last year they
were second in the league in goals for and they fall into 12th which i feel like isn't as big of
a deal as hopping up from 21 to 12 in the other category you know you're winning in a whole
completely different style you'd love to stay second in goals for and also be uh way up there
in goals against but you can't can't have your cake and eat it too unless you're the winnipeg
jets um so i i feel like i feel like looking at at the whole season and knowing that they are not
a complete team you got to be i think i think you you put it perfectly in your long-winded answer
in that they kind of fulfilled expectations.
Yes.
It's not that they failed based on the schedule
or that they exceeded where they should be.
It's kind of this is where they are right now,
and it feels correct.
They are what they are,
and it's not that they're playing above or lower than they should be.
And now that you know the flaws and where you can improve,
there's time.
You got time here on the actual calendar,
not as many games, but improve on that.
Yes. Now it's about there's no excuses because we know go out and get some depth scoring.
Yeah, I I got a pretty reliable tip that like the Leafs are pretty dissatisfied with their bottom six as they should.
And I mean, if they if they weren't, it would be the Kyle Dubas.
Well, yeah, but but Adam, like, that's a great point, though.
Like the Leafs are basically exactly as advertised.
Yeah. Like I'm trying to think back to what I said coming into the season.
I said, look up front.
They're not scoring more.
They're not.
Look at their back end.
That should be a lot better.
And the goaltending was a question.
We were excited about it.
I liked it.
But you still couldn't have gone into the season going, well, it's a lock thing.
It's not a lock.
Like, the Stars played 27 games all last year.
Yes.
So there was a question of, okay, so there's 82 games.
We know he can play this many and Wolk can play this many.
and, uh-oh, there's like 20, 25 games left over.
Yes.
We're going to have to figure that out.
But it's gone probably better than expected.
The top guys are scoring like crazy.
Wall, by the way, has already played five more games
than he did all of last season.
Hilarious.
And I'm surprised it's only that many.
And the bottom six, while we all agree that it is not good enough,
the team as far as i can tell knows that not every team knows their flaws and not every team does
something about it right we talk about it all the time like the worst teams in the nhl aren't the
teams that are just at the bottom of the standings the worst teams of the nhl are the ones where you
look at them and go what are you the leafs i think are exactly as they're built which i think is a
that's a good thing there's no surprises there oh you know you hope you hope that a positive
emerges sure i don't think they counted on bobby mcmahon scoring at this kind of pace i don't know
if they thought matthew nye's quite had this in him yet anyway yeah like there are some good
surprises here but um you know when the playoffs roll around uh is davante smith pelly coming
through the door is sean bergenheim coming through the door is fernando pisani coming
through the door the door matt baleski matt like i'm trying to think of the playoff darling bottom
Game six, dude who chips in six or seven goals.
Callie Yarncroke.
Yarncroke was part of that Nashville Predators team
that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final against the Penguins.
Yep.
He only had seven points, two goals.
But, like, it's crazy.
Game six of the Stanley Cup Final is on YouTube,
and every opening draw is Sidney Crosby versus Yarncroke.
It's crazy.
like of you know it's not like Yarncrow played poorly under Keefe at times he did for sure
um his best offensive totals were under Keefe but I kind of feel like him and Berube would get along
really great I hope he's back in the lineup because if if he can't play this season I kind
of think they need to I kind of think I I yeah I agree with you uh they'll also probably want to
add on the back end because I think that uh maybe they could use a little more depth defense so it's
a question of what are they going to value and what are they going to need um but yeah yeah boy
benoit myers did not have a good night it's vancouver no no thank goodness for joseph wall
on that one um okay so then here's my next question if you guys i would like to move off
of the leafs and on to the wider nhl do you have anything else to add to the leafs for now uh shout
out vancouver i thought they played great they played they've been playing great hockey uh since
Quinn Hughes went out, they stole a win the other night,
and then Saturday they looked great.
And Demko and Lankanen are both at Vezina caliber level, which is crazy.
Demko's out now, potentially.
Yeah, but who knows what that injury's going to be.
I don't know.
He's going to have a couple weeks to repair here.
But I just mean the games he was in over the last week or so,
both of them have been unbelievable.
And Vancouver's looked good.
They look like the team from last year that's playing really good defense
and then getting a timely goal here or there.
All-time regret in fantasy.
I picked up Lankanen early this season,
and I've just been riding him to so many wins.
And then they got stinky for a bit,
and Demko came back, and they were playing Demko.
So I'm like, okay, he's not winning,
and when he's not starting...
He's a backup goalie.
Yeah, he's not starting, and when he is starting,
he's not winning, so I dropped him, and I regret it.
I regret it.
You can't hang on to a backup goalie and just hope that there's an injury.
That's not a smart way to run your fantasy.
No.
You did the right thing.
I know.
You shouldn't regret it.
I know somebody that picked up Tony D'Angelo in fantasy,
and they just had a great week.
He had two goals the other night.
Yeah, a great week.
They were both against his own team.
Man, did he ever put that home against his own team?
He did.
One deflected off him later, too.
Atta boy.
Yeah, so moving on from the Leafs,
I want to ask you guys the same question I led the last segment with,
but let's make it about the teams and you can have a minute to think what nhl team most needs
this break almost needs the break like like a timely reset like hey all-star game wouldn't
have been enough we we need this now and this is going to be great for us and it's going to either
it's either going to turn our season around or it's going to propel us to do even greater things
like who could it be okay i have an answer but i want to check how teams are doing over their last
10 to confirm another one okay let's see let's see let's see uh because there's a team that we
were singing the praises of for a while and then they got real stinky uh hmm hmm see okay there's
all these teams at the bottom of the standings and the break isn't going to help any of them
yeah i'm just looking at so you know who i'm gonna say uh i'm gonna go with the montreal
canadians man because they've been falling off falling off they've lost three straight and
they're two seven and one in their last 10 that's crazy when did that happen man we had so many
montreal fans in our comments about that video that we did and it was like it was like in december
and I was like rubbing my nipples.
They're like, oh, they got line.
Age like milk, little bro.
Yeah, and then, you know, here we are, 2-7-1.
Damn, tough look.
And Laine has scored in what, eight?
Something like that?
He's been utterly useless.
Patrick Laine has been a minus player
in more games than he's scored in.
He's, sorry, he's been a minus in 14 games.
Okay.
He has 12 goals.
Okay.
He's had multi-goal games, so he's probably scored in fewer games than 12.
Right.
He has not been good.
When he's on, man, this is the player he's always been.
Any given night, he could be the best goal scorer in the history of the sport.
And any given night, he can be the most one-dimensional player of his generation.
Yes.
Yeah.
Who's more one-dimensional?
that's a non-option defensive but that's what he does and you acquire him for that and that's what
you do worth the risk like again when he scores they win yes exactly and they did win when he did
score um you know it doesn't all rest on him but i was looking at that team like oh shit here they
come that a lot of those teams you know when we were looking at that wild card race and we're
like okay so just none of them are going to lose ever again a lot of them have hit speed bumps but
none of them hit it harder than the Montreal Canadiens Jesse Blake I don't know if you guys
are aware but from January 5th through February 3rd this team in the league was the number had
had more points than any other team in the National Hockey League they had 22 points
no other team had that many points in that span and then after February 3rd this team played the
Tampa Bay Lightning on the second half of back-to-back then they played Tampa Bay Lightning
again in a two-game series in Florida because the schedulers did that and then they went on to play
the Florida Panthers and lost 5-1 and this team is the Ottawa Senators I knew it who were on just
on fuego through all of January and then have hit a really big speed bump here heading into
four nations on their three game losing streak and they've gone completely away from what made
them really good and that's stopping stopping goals like there are a great defensive team for
four straight weeks and then all of a sudden they allow four goals and then five goals and then five
goals and they can't stop anything and i i don't know where it went in the last three games and
they also can't score which is something they couldn't do through their winning streak but
they managed to overcome that so now they can't do either or and i wonder if this break is the
reset they need to get back to where they were because i think the ottawa centers can be really
good and are going to be a playoff team this year and probably one of the wild card scenes
seeds looking how tampa's playing lately but they need to get back to the great defensive hockey
they were playing for a month and not this weird week that they had against two times in tampa and
one against florida tampa's such an interesting team going forward like we're gonna find out if
if playing in the four-nation face-off is good for you,
like for the regular season,
or if it tires you out,
because basically the lightning are going to the tournament,
like all of them, except for Vasilevsky.
If Team Russia was there, the entire squad would be there.
Yes, yes.
Honestly.
It's actually crazy.
Well, and the break comes at a good time for Kucherov too.
Yes.
I love this segment from the Toronto boy next to me
who is trying to do some Ottawa Senators erasure
because I was talking about the Senators
and you're like, oh.
You know that Senators conversation?
You know what?
He's trying to steer it away.
No, I'm talking about a team
who the Senators were previously ahead of
and then they've lost their lead on tip.
No, it's a good way to bend it.
Only two points behind the Leafs, too.
No, great.
Only two points behind the Leafs.
Who the Sens are hoping to play in the first round.
Yep.
Yep.
I'm going to go with this, guys.
Jesse, unless you had extra, you know.
No, no.
If we want to just move past the Sens,
who have the most disrespected franchise in the sport,
whatever, what could they do?
I think it'll be great for Matt and Paolo
that he gets to basically go from the AHL
to playing against the best players in the world.
That guy is going to get...
I mean, every coach in this tournament
is going to be like,
that guy.
Targeting that guy.
Yes.
It's a little unfair.
It's kind of crazy.
All right.
More Ottawa Senators chatter.
Or is Team USA better off with Jake Sanderson than Quinn Hughes?
Because one of them is better.
What?
Are you saying Sanderson's better than Quinn Hughes?
Are you trying to get what?
Is Team USA better off because one of them is so much more better than the other one?
You're taking shots at counter Hellebuck to start the year.
Okay.
Yeah.
And now you're saying Jake Sanderson and definitely Kale McCarr are better than Quinn Hughes.
all i'm saying is maybe blessing a disguise listen i will i will join jesse in saying that
um a hockey player with two working hands is better than probably gonna have an easier time
than a player with one which is what quinn hughes is right now by the way that's another reason why
that loss against the canucks sucks like they got shut down hard they didn't have quinn hughes
ah guy's gonna win like the norris and maybe the heart maybe not anymore but
geez uh jake sanderson is well i'm just aga you gotta ask the question look at the replacement
for okay so canada needs a defenseman yeah they're getting dowdy very cool
the states need a defenseman they're getting jake sanderson pretty cool
finland has like three guys who have been healthy scratches i'm pretty sure
like it's tough and i know let's go can't crack the team and oh villi it's not it's this is his
villi origin story yeah hey oh hey i i i think uh not having quinn hughes there is such a huge
loss for team usa but having jake sanderson now on the team is is a really big plus i think it's
cool for him to get that moment to play with all those guys it's going to be a great step in his
career being like okay now i'm peers with all of these guys so hopefully he gets a little bit of a
step here but live yeah they'll be fine is all i'm saying like it's a good replacement they'll
be fine yeah uh my team is going to be this it's gonna be the new york rangers and the reason i am
a rangers believer a rangers truther if you will uh so here's the deal with the new york rangers
they are currently four points behind the senators three points behind the red wings
same amount of games played essentially as both of them they're right there they're right there
man boston is sitting on the outside looking in just ahead of them sure columbus sitting on the
outside looking in and obviously detroit currently is in that last wild card spot although if you go
by points percentage they are one better points percentage like like a a third of a point it's
ridiculous better than the senators the if we're talking about a hundredth of a point attaboy if
we're talking about teams where this break couldn't be coming at a worse time it's detroit
yeah yeah but here's here's what i look at and this is you know just even just looking at the
standings okay the new york rangers jt miller came back he had a good first couple of games
and then there were some giveaways and rangers fans were like ah ah the man who left is still
the man um and the honeymoon's over and that's great but the rangers have had i think of any
nhl team this year the most arduous time as a dressing room you had one of your guys you went
all the way to the conference finals last year and then you your general manager's like I don't
like this locker room guy who I signed to the contract and oh also I don't like the captain
and we're going to make this a real issue for three months and then we're going to put another
longtime player on a memo with the captain we're going to send it to 31 other teams and go who
wants it we're just giving it away palm trees or not and and that the Rangers played not like they
were bad they played like they were emotionally devastated oh and and you can tell like i'm
thinking about the ducks two years ago depressing hockey just right miserable and even in that even
though they got and i would say that shisterkin deal in three four years is gonna look so good
it's gonna look so good it looked good now the fact that he only got 11 and a half we're talking
about players making 14 we're talking about moose getting 14 he hasn't been good enough
Moose?
No, no.
Shusterkin?
Yes, Shusterkin.
Yeah, but the New York Rangers,
if you look at something like just face value,
goal differential, minus three.
I know in their last 10 that they're 5-4-1.
That's a vast improvement.
It must have been minus 30 at one point.
This team went to the conference finals last year.
There are not that many players that are that different.
I know Ryan Lindgren's having a bad year.
They might move him before the trade deadline.
They won double-digit playoff games.
It's just what I'm saying.
You're telling me.
And again, no disrespect to the Senators
because I think they've had a very good season.
No disrespect to the Red Wings
because they've been great since they fired the head coach.
But let's be straight.
This is a team that knows how to win.
They're veterans and they're coming on
and I think they're coming back.
And I think they're going to be
in one of those wildcard spots come April.
I would be shocked
if they did not make the playoffs this year.
And that means whether Detroit or Ottawa gets kicked out,
because I don't think any of these guys,
I think you've got Tampa at 66 points,
New Jersey at 68 points.
Four and six point spreads this time of year
are a lot to make up in the NHL.
And barring some collapse from one of those teams,
I just think the New York Rangers have it now.
And it's a little bit of FU attitude.
It might be FU upstairs to the management group
and the owner.
It's probably FU to the media.
And it's probably FU to the rest of the league.
And also, they're all like 32.
Yeah.
So they also can see that the end of their career is, well, you can see it in the distance.
It's visible.
It's on the horizon.
Better get it done, boys.
Yeah.
You got a couple of years.
That's it.
It's tricky to see because you're getting so old.
Yeah.
Hey, what do you think I have these?
That's right.
The number one thing to come out of this tournament might be tea.
Oh, yeah.
God, I'd love to be a fly on the wall in either the Sweden dressing room.
Or the Team USA dressing room?
Talk about it all?
Well, Team Sweden's got Petey.
Holy shit.
Zabines.
And Zabinijad.
Yeah.
Team USA's got Kreider, which is very funny.
Miller.
JT Miller.
There's a lot of tea going on there.
Oh, there'll be some things shared.
Some things.
Yeah.
You know what I'm curious about on the Four Nations thing in the locker room?
What percentage of the Swedish and the Finland guys speak the native tongue?
i would i think all of them yeah yeah i think yeah yeah they all grew up there right i don't
know like willie he speaks swedish but he didn't he kind of grew up there but i think it was like
after eight years old he was there the whole time so i think he would speak it yeah he does yeah
yeah the swedish guys trick you because some of them like barely even have an accent yeah that's
what i'm saying no i'm pretty sure they're all all of them yeah now what are they speaking in
the dressing room i'd love to know are they speaking swedish in the dressing room are they
speaking english i would imagine swedish you think so do we know you know what confused me
there was a video of um what are they dreaming are they dreaming in swedish or english that's
what i want to know um one time years ago when i was doing those khl videos with my friend andre
we would i would shoot it at his apartment and we would obviously shoot the videos in english and
when i was there his girlfriend was there and she would also speak in english and he told me he's
like you had left about half an hour ago and finally one of us in russian goes why are we
still speaking english they didn't even notice they just kept speaking english to each other
yeah i wonder like when the finnish team is out there and they're like that the face off dot and
they're all huddled and they're making little plays are they talking in finnish you should
you think i mean think of think of uh you know you're always seeing the players going
yeah that's what i'm talking about yeah yeah you can now you can just out in the open be like
i'm gonna go over there now like it's actually an advantage that the swedish and finnish players
have that's what i was gonna say yeah how many guys on team canada and team usa speak
swedish or finnish i'm gonna say zero not many of them i don't think they needed to learn that
they might know some of the words the other team yeah they might know some of the particulars like
Like a frigging, I don't know, face-off, shoot, pass?
I don't know.
Do the Swedish and Finnish teams have a strategic advantage
over Canada and USA in terms of secrets?
I mean, you can literally put your stick in the air
like you're calling for it and be like, don't!
You can out loud be like, don't!
I don't want it!
Jesse, you know what they'd say?
They'd say, vorm chokolad.
Vorm chokolad!
They probably would.
That's what they're going to say.
They definitely would.
garlic beer because it's a thing i wish i had one i wish apparently they had garlic beer in
sweden and it made you radio yeah it wasn't a thing yeah because i think it's just something
it's like one bar is like let's feed this bullshit yeah you came here and you're like
everybody there drinks garlic beer nope just david alter pretty sure
it was literally just alter yes i think it was alter and kevin mcgrann maybe yeah that's it
And we asked Matt's about it.
He was like, no.
And Matt's was like.
Although to be fair, maybe he was the wrong guy to ask.
Like, when's Matt's going to go to a pub in Sweden?
Well, I think he's kind of a celebrity.
He's kind of a celebrity goings on in Sweden.
I think Matt's, you should answer truthfully.
Well, that sounds like a tourist novelty or poor people drink.
Yeah.
Neither.
Yeah.
I can't relate.
Sorry.
I don't know what the poor's are up to lately.
That sounds silly.
Sorry.
I was on the Leafs pre-salary cap.
I don't know what you're talking about.
We need to make a note that the secrets per 60 for Sweden and Finland will be through the roof.
So there you go.
Why not?
There you go.
You can skate directly up to the goalie on a breakaway and tell him what you're going to do.
And he has no idea.
Hella Buck's going to be like, I don't know.
I don't know.
Sometimes life throws you curveballs and you don't have time to get to them.
And that's where TaskRabbit comes in.
And I think you should check this out because here's the deal.

is this is um based on best bs yeah love it what team surprised you the most to this point in the
season and it can be good or it can be bad surprised you the most you go first go ahead
jesse this one's so easy for me the winnipeg jets yeah like all they did last year was lose
miserably in the playoffs and then come the off season they're like okay we're just gonna run
this thing back we believe in this team for some reason and they've all guaranteed contracts the
previous offseason for how many tens of years Shifley and Hellebuck and all them are going to
be there and they ran it back and all of a sudden they're the best team in the league and a lot of
that's to do with the goaltending but a lot of it's also they're getting a lot of high-end scoring
out of Connor and Shifley and then the defense is excellent there's really no flaws with how
they're playing right now in the regular season we'll see how it holds up the playoffs because
that's always a different game but right now to me that's the biggest surprise on a team that just
said just throw it back and it works it's crazy yeah biggest surprise steve good answer it is a
good answer um i have a team that's not in the playoffs and a team that is pick one okay fine
also i'll say the columbus blue jackets oh i like that we all wanted it to happen
none of us expected it um they're right there they're improved from last year they're improved
from the year before that and there's no real reason for them to be their goaltending is still
a catastrophe um the the back end i mean wierenski's heroic norris norris caliber yeah um
top three yep easily but like injuries alone injuries alone this season not to mention
the trade upheaval from the offseason they weren't even tragedy even from the offseason
they weren't even at the cap floor to start the year I'm not even sure if they are yet
like it's like I don't I don't know I don't know like JVR's turned the clock back he's
frigging pinging it off the barn in um there we all wanted it we all thought what a great story
this would be we were all pulling for the blue jackets and you know we all know what they did
to the lightning in 2019 this is almost more impressive they're currently three million dollars
above the floor like wow they have a 68 million dollar roster currently as puckpedia has it
um and that's a team that was in a playoff spot for a large majority of the season they could do
some serious damage at the trade deadline if they want to of course wow of course the euro check
stuff oh yeah like like that that had the opportunity to be such a distraction for them
uh man like for for a wild amount of reasons it's insane they're even in the playoff conversation
oh yeah okay i'm gonna give you mine and then i'm gonna give you two notables that we missed
okay my surprise of the season has to be the los angeles kings um wow the los angeles kings
for the last couple of years have made some really questionable calls on on who they've
signed and who they brought in and how things have been done you know you let dersey go to
arizona you um sign or you you go get uh pure luke dubois it's a disaster you have to fire
your coach um you signed joel edmondson to a mystifyingly large contract uh this offseason
and really you're waiting for a lot of these younger players to kind of take a step forward
you're brandt clarks you're quitting by fields as much as quitting had established himself as
an nhler i don't think he's the second overall pick yeah right i think that's fair you put him
in the laugh category of like hey when's this coming right when's this when's the 80 point
the 90 point right you pick second overall you expect the dominant player exactly and i'm seeing
with the los angeles kings uh maybe not one particular player explode but without drew dowdy
like 90 of this season yep you had brant clark who got off to like a screeching start i know
he's cooled off a little bit you have um a team that plays well defensively a team that plays
well offensively a team that was not expected to be that great in the goaltending category
it's turned out pretty good completely turning the clock who's 39 or something i think the la
kings deserve a ton of flowers because i was a hater i was a doubter i was like those guys
messed this up i can't believe this is going to happen and they have they've completely changed
my mind let me give you a huge name 16 6 and 6 with a 919 save percentage darcy kemper boy that
That PLD Kemper trade really worked out for both sides.
It's a good trade.
Look at the Caps.
I don't think they regret it.
No.
They got rid of Kemper, who is one of the best goalies in the league this season,
and somehow got better in net.
Yes.
Nailed it.
Yep.
Both teams nailed it.
I think the coaching change helped a lot too.
Of course.
I just think that they had the wrong guy in the wrong time,
and you're looking sometimes it's not doesn't mean it's the bad coach it's just i mean clearly look
at what mcclellan's done in detroit but like you know sometimes you kind of go ah this is just the
wrong guy and they identify him hiller baby oh it was hill yeah well the hill dog wait who are you
talking about no no i know jim hiller coming in is good yes is what i was yeah i think the last
little bit under the last guy was not good right yes we were saying the same thing who's on first
yeah yeah hey we can do this we can do this we got a future in this yes um now two two teams i
want to give notable mention to because i'm actually glad they didn't come up i want everybody's input
on these okay first one nashville predators surprise have to be a surprise surprise bad way
yes oh oh oh i understand a surprise jeez oh yeah i am not sharp i promise to be better tomorrow
they were a surprise last year with how good they were yes after youtube gate youtube gate
not youtube gate youtube that's coming to believe is real yeah yeah well jesse i might have been
right because that could have just been a streak uh i mean come on come on how they played since
guys they lost in the playoffs and then they've stunk uncle adam was right anyway i i i want to
ask you in all seriousness ask me young are the predators as bad as they've shown the rails
are the predators as bad as they've shown or do they start next year
lock themselves into a playoff and they're going to be fine
no you give barry trotz another off season to wreck this team i think they'll probably be worse
i honestly think the predators are in prime position to have a really good team next season
the amount of cash space and resources that they have they can really make a go once again that
building a really good team it's just a matter of making the right decisions they have a good
solid oh well yeah that's there goes that that's the thing it's are they going to utilize the
amount of draft picks they have and the tremendous amount of cap space because that's that's the
whole narrative with the national predators they spent all this money last season and you look at
it and they they spent a lot but they they were so under the cap that it hasn't really affected
their flexibility so they have the room to go out and get more pieces it's just a matter of like
does buying a team work in the nhl does spending a whole bunch of money in free agency work is that
going to be up the correct way to get this team back to the playoffs and back to a stanley cup
contender so i question about whether or not they can do it and whether they will make the right
decisions but they are in prime position to not rebuild or anything to just go for it full out
during these this offseason i will say this is a hell of a draft to have three first round picks
oh yeah that's what i'm talking about like three firsts i think it's like 18 million dollars in
cap space right now you go to the deadline it's even more than that they can be a facilitator a
third team in you're still a destination too and like people like there yeah every offseason we
hear about guys going to nashville because it's awesome to play in nashville especially when
they're winning so i think they can be good it's just a matter of do they have the right guy in
the gm spot to make those decisions ryan o'reilly was singing the praises of mitch marner a few
months ago.
Reunited and it
feels so good.
All right, the other team.
Use some big names.
The other team, that is a
surprise that we did not
mention.
And they've kind of gone
under the radar lately.
But even after a coaching
change, this team, like
when they made the coaching
team change, they were in
the playoffs.
Now that they've made the
coaching change, they're
not.
The Boston Bruins.
And as Leaf fans, you have
to understand, if you're
not a Leaf fan, I
completely understand why
you're like, well, that
happens.
As a Leaf fan, no, it
doesn't.
and it's one of those teams like cj i remember a couple years ago was like is this the year that
it's finally sort of like fall off time and then they went out and they set the league on fire and
uh and you know they did end up losing in the first round but they set the regular season
record for points um how in 18 months did boston go from that to this how did it happen and what
can be done to arrest this how do you change this you know I'm seeing Brad Marchand pop up on
trade boards what for real if it was any team other than the Bruins we would be having that
conversation though it's just because it's the Bruins where we go oh that makes no sense what
are you talking about it's an aging veteran with great uh playoff pedigree uh with an expiring
contract yeah that is to a t exactly the kind of player you look to trade and has has had a
relatively good year as well 44 points in 57 games yeah yeah not quite his standard but any
normal 35 your point like any normal circumstance any regular team this is the guy you traded the
trade deadline yep yeah the guy who's unsigned going to the offseason who's aging and you get
a bunch of either futures or young guys that you can play in the roster very soon you know it makes
sense to trade him it's just it's a very specific circumstance in that it's boston and the captain
and brad marsh and and everything that comes with him jesse swayman and all mark you were saying
were six and seven in vesna voting last year yes last year yeah all mark won the vesna two or three
years ago yeah swayman just signs his big deal yeah two goalies have played for the bruins this
year neither of them have a save percentage that starts with a nine oh my goodness really that'll
kill you swayman 898 corpus allo 892 told you about corpus all didn't i yeah even 892 this
year is not yeah disastrous it's not good missing training camp doesn't help no missing does it
it like i could i could see them bouncing back maybe next year maybe even the back half of the
season let's be honest uh that will kill you that is uh a lot of teams are looking for one goalie
yeah and boston had two elite ones and they rode them for a few years and it's over
and now they're supposed to have the one big elite one and he's not playing
to up to his ability he's paid like one yeah he's paid like jake ottinger he's paid like
connor hellebuck he's paid like lena solmark who has been injured a bunch but had a really good
season or began to have a really good season after a rocky start um that'll kill you is this a team
that should have gone in our other category of the four nation break is coming at a good time
i mean maybe yeah but i'm here's what i what i would say jesse and this is where my
my question for these guys would be is is this a team that can turn it around because i think some
of the teams we talked about like i think the rangers are turning it around i don't know that
they can and it's it it's it's beyond brad marchand he might get moved very likely not
um but he looks like the hottest player in the league right now who's that posternak yeah well
he's amazing but they've become a little one-dimensional in that part and the guys that
they signed to come in and do the sort of the the secondary work to fill in for the creches
and the the bergerons that you lost uh is alias lindholm and i think this is going down as one
of the worst free agent signings last season and it's not to be not to pick on him but you have 10
goals he has 29 points in how over 50 games and this remember i was talking about games almost
The Leafs acquiring Luke Cunnin, and you're like, please aim higher.
He has more goals.
That's crazy.
He has more goals than Elias Lindholm.
And he's got a no-move clause for the first one, two, three years of this deal.
And then later on, it'll be a modified no-trade.
So $7.75 million so far for 29 points.
That puts him at roughly 40 to 45 points over an 82-game season,
assuming he doesn't hit some sort of hot streak.
like that is that's one of those things where you go is that recoverable hey nikita has 117 points
sorry that's penalty minutes he has 14. you've gotten 13 goals out of how many millions of
dollars did you spend on both those so what was it nikita zodorov was five million or six
uh doesn't matter so you're looking at 13 in that neighborhood yeah uh zodorov is five million
plus 775 so you're 1275 13 goals just not even kind of good enough not even close and firing
the winningest coach over the last two or three years somehow didn't fix it weird right yeah now
boston does have they get they get itchy they're boston they could win the cup uh but they got to
get into those playoffs and i just i'm i'm curious about how they do it i really am don't know how
they do it and i never thought we'd be saying that listen in absence of any leaf success to
cheer for i am cheering on the downfall of my enemy hey it's palentine's week
february 13th that's the date everybody circles on their calendar every year every year it's the
more important of all the it's the most important of all dates in february right i would say easily
February 13th, it's about your relationships with your friends,
Valentine's Day, and you should follow Panago Pizza on social media
because they have giveaways all week long celebrating real friendships.
And, guys, I would say that our friendship benefited directly
from Panago Pizza for a long, long time.
Sure did, pal.
We have spent a lot of time and a lot of years eating Panago Pizza
and obviously enjoying our Valentine's Days together.
So, Jesse, can you give us a good Palentine's Day memory, a good Panago Palentine's Day memory?
My favorite memory of us as pals is when I scored a virtual OT winner.
Second round win!
It was like NHL 17 or whatever, how many decades ago it was.
And we all ran and hugged like it was actually an OT winner for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And we did get Panago that night.
Yes, we did.
Yes, because we're pals and we eat Panago.
So, listen.
What a night.
Panago Palentine's Day, celebrating those special moments of friendships with great giveaways.
Check them out again.
Panago Pizza on social media.
And enjoy the giveaways and the pizza.

Alright, I want to do a bit of an extended press conference
Today, if we can
Because tomorrow we're going to take a real deep look
at four nations uh i figured today would be a bad day to do it because you never know
you know we're just now getting the lineups in in practice like they're just being tweeted now
uh we're just now finding out that hey sydney crosby looks like he's gonna play
hey right we didn't even know that this morning did not know that so that's cool um so i figured
like some more storylines will play out tomorrow and we'll talk about that all tomorrow now i think
we do an extended press conference because we haven't done a lot of them let's go do it
one thing i want to start with is leafs talk because we get a lot of leafs questions all the
time and sometimes i avoid the leafs questions because we'll spend an hour on the leafs and we
kind of cover everything but today we didn't cover this question here from somebody with the
username sl but it's not steve's sl yes it's bflr2734 which i hope you're a real person
they wrote if the leafs get dylan cousins would you let tavarez walk this summer um
the i feel like they would just have the same problem wouldn't they yeah like why wouldn't
The point would be to have both.
Yeah, to quote a famous Mexican grocery food commercial,
why not both?
Listen, you're not...
I didn't even know that's what that's from,
but that's interesting.
Wow.
It's...
What?
I know the saying.
I just didn't know the reference.
Soft shell or hard shell?
Why not both?
She goes, why not both?
And then they lift her up on their shoulders
and they celebrate.
It's a very popular commercial.
What?
Mexican restaurant?
It's not a restaurant.
Old El Paso.
Old El Paso, yeah.
And your taco kit.
Yes.
white people taco night
Steve do you have a lot of white people taco night
from the grocery store
from the grocery store
Steve how often do you have
white people taco night in your home
not often enough
no not often enough
ramp it up a little
I really do need to
you know what
I'm going to text us
we're getting Mexican
I like that, yeah.
Oh, yeah?
Do it.
Is Mexican Odel Paso?
I want to order Mexican tonight.
Is she going to be like, oh, yeah, Chipotle.
From Jeff's Tacos down the street.
I'm thinking Mexico Lindo.
Does Florida Fades do tacos in the back?
No, but there is a Mexico Lindo in that plaza.
How dare you?
How dare you?
Also, they might.
I don't know.
Oh, by the way, I passed Florida Fade's new outlet on Kingston Road.
It's called Elevated Fades, and it's on Kingston Road.
So instead of a Florida Fade, you can have an Elevated Fade.
So you should try it.
It's on Kingston Road.
It's on your drive-in.
I want you to know in the comments section,
you could never be meaner to me than my friends.
You know?
What?
I just want you to elevate your game with Elevated Fades.
Adam, what do you think about Dylan Cousins and Tavares?
I think you want to have both.
Listen, they're getting a center.
Oh, it's like that taco commercial.
There's going to be so many people who are like, I know exactly what commercial Steve's talking about.
Yeah, it's a very popular meme.
What is the meme?
Why not both? It's a popular meme.
I don't watch a lot of commercials.
It's a meme!
I will tell you that I don't think the Leafs are going to get Dylan Cousins because the Buffalo Sabres want a player like Dylan Cousins, which begs the question, why not keep your Dylan Cousins that you already have?
we have dylan cousins at home um but i think what's going to happen eventually is they're
going to need to find a center option for c to c because john is a phenomenal player and can play
in most situations where you got to watch john is foot speed and we do see that against faster
teams in the playoffs specifically where it becomes a little bit more difficult the man is
never out of position he's never irresponsible he scores big goals he gets big points anybody
who has said john's john tavaris has cooked over the last seven years at any time has been cooked
by john tavaris oh barbecue like like just slow roasted each year that that take never leaves you
but you are going to need a younger option yes who can skate this is why i'm going brock nelson
not that much younger but fits the timeline boy and brock nelson for me is a far better option
than not that ryan o'reilly is a bad option but he's a better option because he's coming off
consecutive 35 plus goal years like three of them and i know this year's scoring is a little down
on the island and i know that they're on a bit of a hot streak and lula amorello is going to pump
those tires until they're they're out because he's gonna he probably loses his job if they don't make
the playoffs but i just want to say this the idea that john devars won't be a leaf next year is
anathema to me i just think what is that word it means that i've never heard that it's terrible i
would hate it and athema and anathema and anathema yeah you can look it up i'm going to john is going
to stay the least you're going to sign him it's going to be a good deal enough that you're going
to want to build a statue i think like you're going to be like man he took a he took a discount
a second time to be a leaf damn two two mil and crazy and i think that there is a realistic world
where he is 3c next year next to let's say they don't have to trade easton count he's bringing
young Easton Cowan into the NHL
or young Fraser Minton who lived
at his house. That is
the kind of depth I want to have as a Leaf fan.
How about JT on Fraser Minton's
wing? Totally, because I think
that's probably where his future is.
He could probably win you a face-off and then move to
the wing. Yeah, I...
When it comes to the Dylan Cousins conversation,
I don't look at it as this, then that.
I think you can
and should have both. Yeah. You just
go out and get Dylan Cousins,
and then you just add to your
riches yeah by the way yeah but you're not gonna get dylan cousins look at us talking about a leaf
team that has dylan cousins and also fraser mitten we are out of our minds oh that would
yeah it wouldn't happen no it's not happening yeah uh next up we have audio from mitch marner
so the leafs have been watching the oj simpson documentary in the in amongst their team like
all of them have which one recently uh the new one that's out not the made in america one okay
Yeah, so they asked Mitch Marner about it, and here's what he said.
It's a very fun answer.
What's going on?
He was watching the OJ stuff yesterday on his day off
because everyone on the team is.
Are you locked into that?
Yeah, yeah, I watched it too.
It was crazy.
What did you learn?
I don't get how it didn't – I mean, I think everyone's thinking
what I want to say.
It was the first really time watching something like that.
It was bizarre.
I was shocked at the end of it all.
I think he did it
I think he did it
Please play that again
Please play that again
That's so funny
Mitch Marner on If OJ Did It
I watched the OJ stuff yesterday on his day off
because everyone on the team is
Are you locked into that?
Yeah, I watched it too
It's crazy
What did you learn?
I don't get how it didn't
I think everyone's thinking what I'm going to say
So, yeah, it was first early time watching something like that.
It was bizarre.
I was shocked at the end of it all.
You know what I love about this is Mitch is like,
what do I say to not get sued here?
But, like, he's not going to get sued.
OJ's dead, man.
Like, you don't need to worry about it.
You see where Mitch is like casual Mitch.
And he's like, he's, I don't know what to say.
And then he slips back into PR Mitch.
You know, it's a great dog.
I've never seen anything like that.
did chapelle get sued for oj didn't do it but like you know you know he doesn't want to slip
up and say something controversial like yeah okay did it you know but yeah he very much said it i
mean that was really funny for me shout out mark masters best question asker in the game if that
was just the best if that was uh controversial to anyone at this point i'd be like you need it
You need to get out.
You need to get out.
No, I think he, listen, I think he might have.
Remember that book he was going to come out with?
You remember the title of it?
That said, I did it?
If I did it.
No, I think it was called I Murdered Two People.
The book looked like it said, I did it.
Right.
You know, the way they designed the front of the book.
Well, the reason, you know the reason for that.
Why is that?
Because Nicole's family somehow got the rights to the book.
so they made the cover.
I did it.
Because I think it's a part of like
he owes them so much in restitution.
Because he lost the civil case
to them for the murder.
He won the criminal trial
so he couldn't be prosecuted
but he lost the civil part of it.
Which is fucking insane.
Just give them some money.
They'll never see their daughter again
but just give them some money.
Yeah, no, it's insane.
So it's a lot of fun
that the Leafs are all uh enjoying that and um and yeah Mitch's reaction is hilarious so I wanted
to bring that to the table uh good one Mitch good one Mark that was really good uh next up we got
Mike Schmidt who asked do we do you think we will ever have three digits on jerseys if so what year
because if we're still playing hockey in in 2310 you know long but we're we're well in dust by this
point do you think that they gotta add three digits to this thing first of all i don't plan
on dying ever so um i'm gonna go with the year 2167 okay that is the year uh do i think they
overdue no i think i think here's the less popular uh more boring answer which is the nhl will just
a qr after enough of yeah qr code there you go that's i like that the nhl will uh if it continues
and and into hundreds of years from now and i hope it does um the nhl will say at a certain point
okay we've retired a lot of jersey numbers and we're just gonna say you're honored now and that's
what the Leafs used to do they they never retired any numbers or unretired and we and they would
just say those were on the ring of honor or whatever they were called and then on the 100th
year anniversary then Shani was like no we're going to retire some jersey numbers and so I think
eventually that's where we go because like you know you can well the Leafs have 10 or 15 numbers
already off the board you're gonna have a lot of people in the like 60s and 70s with their numbers
right those weird awkward like william neilander at 59 or whatever that was well yeah i'm gonna
pick a weird number like 93 well actually yeah that one's taken too weirdly so yeah yeah anyway
it's a i think i think we'll get back to that but we'll be dead we're staying at two digits
is you're staying at two okay two three's too much well too much i i think in a few years no
one's gonna wear 34 no one's gonna wear 16 no one's gonna wear 88 no one's gonna wear 88 because
Eric Lindros. It's true.
Leaf legend. There's an off chance for
91. Oh, I think
91 gets retired.
Honestly, all four? Absolutely.
Dude, no question.
What if they don't win anything?
If they win a cup,
no one wears 44.
Right. No, no. The whole team.
Yeah, exactly.
Steven Lorenz's number. Thank you, Steven.
You want Ryan Reeves up in the
Raptors? I'll do it. I'll do it if they win
a cup. I will absolutely
retire ryan reeves retire the whole stanley cup winning team i don't care of you yeah all i will
buy a conscious honor doer oh my god get handed ceremony handing out uh uh military jerseys every
game you know from the for the leafs alumni honor doer champion oh that's the greatest
franchise in history of sports yeah whoever wins that championship for the leafs yeah
absolutely because they overcame it um but i think i think um uh i i don't know i think that
you're you're if you've retired doug gilmore who had who was here for five years and had a great
five years he's my favorite leaf all time he's he's jersey number retired yes okay he's up there
i was previously not honored yeah i was previously honored but retired okay uh went to the conference
finals a couple times mats went to the conference finals three times uh wendell got there at least
once and the second time i think he was traded in that off season for mats not sure but it doesn't
matter regardless you're looking at a bunch of guys where that's the standard okay tavaris has
been here longer and scored more points than gilmore the only thing he doesn't have is a third
round appearance he scored the goal that sent them to the second round for the first time in 19 years
yep like mitch is a no-brainer austin no-brainer willie no-brainer morgan's interesting matthews
won their first heart in 60 or 70 years yeah and art ross a couple art ross trophies they're not
art ross um rocker shark they're i want to say their heart and calder droughts were longer than
their cup drought yeah and their norris one is the longest drought still going well that's like
the canucks yeah yeah just never won uh but i think don't forget the sabers uh i just think
those three are at minimum i would say if you're honoring those three you can't not honor tavaris
uh he's been spectacular here but i think all of them and i think all of them need this for
their souls more than you need it for your records all of them need at least a couple
conference finals berths together.
They do.
Win a cup.
And I think they need to win a freaking cup.
Win a cup.
Can you imagine the crime it would be
if especially Marner, Matthews, Nylander
go their entire career,
they stick it out here and they don't win?
That would be a crime.
If the Leafs win the cup.
Like McDavid needs a cup,
he needs to win a cup.
The statue's going to be bigger
than the one of Jesus in Brazil.
Oh, yeah.
Like, it's...
I need it to happen.
I need it to happen.
Oh, my God.
I forget what it's called.
What, the cup?
The statue in Brazil.
Christ the Redeemer.
The well-traveled Maddie.
User of Saley.
Yes, user of Saley.

All right. Next up?
Yep.
So last episode, we talked about how it would be so much fun to buy the five flyers, but we are not that wealthy, so we can't quite do it.
But Bob Cameron, who has knowledge of the Fife Flyers, said that you will have a lot of work to do if you bought the Flyers.
They are bottom of the league, but there is no relegation.
So Bob also linked the standings.
And yeah, they are extremely bad.
So if we look at the standings, out of 10 teams, they are last.
And they are 3-27.
Wow.
So the five flyers have eight points on the year, minus 97 goal differential, 327 and two.
Okay, so here's my question.
Not great.
Who's got real money?
Anybody listening got real money?
Like real money.
Because you're going to need some real money to buy a franchise, even over in England.
Yeah.
But English ice hockey is, from what I understand, on the rise.
And we could sure come in as a silent partner that maybe broadcast the game to a wider audience.
Our wallets will be silent, that's for sure.
I don't know if that's silent.
Sorry, we'll be the blood, sweat, and tears partner where it's like you come in with a less percentage,
but you do a lot of work because you didn't put up the money.
I think it's going to take a lot of money and work to turn this team around.
No, no, no, no, no.
They got games in hand.
Shut up.
They got games in hand on you.
For anybody listening, the standings are the Five Flyers in 10th out of 10, 327 and 2 with 8 points.
and then you hop up to ninth place,
the Manchester Storm have 25 points.
So we go from 25 points in ninth place
to eight in 10th place.
The Manchester Storm are 12, 20, and one.
And then in first place are the Belfast Giants
who are 25, seven, and three
with 53 points on the year in 35 games.
Yeah, second in goal differential though.
Paper tiger.
You know what I would do?
I would call old friend of the show, Ben Scrivens.
The Scrivesina.
Yeah.
And see if you want to come out of retirement, play goal for a couple of years in Fife.
What?
Start there.
I didn't know that's where you were going.
Start from the goaltending out.
Start calling on ex-leaves.
What's Ben Smith up to?
What's Jared Smith been doing?
What is Ben?
Let me look that up.
Let me look that up.
You know?
Ben Smith, and I got to put hockey because it's a very common name.
He's only 30.
I'm younger than Ben Smith.
I'm sad.
All right.
Well, depressed.
He is still playing.
where uh for munich in the del that's a pretty good league with oh my gosh look at these names
look at some of these freaking names tobias reader leaf legend adam brooks oh wow god i love
hockey db roulette will butcher taro harose dude i love this i love this very much i'm so glad i
did this i feel like this is adam's least favorite part i don't give a shit this is where steve sits
by himself at the bar saying random
hockey names. Yeah.
And there are a bunch of
people who have the best time
doing it. No, but
you're an asshole.
Most people, when they do that, name stars. You're
like, how do I... Guy who played 20
games. Let's go. Guy who played...
Alright. Let's go. No, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
How close can I get?
Pierre Hedin. How many games did he
ever play? Look it up.
Look it up. Harold Pielash.
No, he played way more than 20 games.
Maybe 20 playoffs games.
He played way more.
Ben Smith, champion in the NHL, the AHL,
two times in the DEL with two different teams.
Wow.
Put some respect on his freaking name.
Pierre Hedin.
Pierre Hedin.
You guys want to get to our fat guy segment?
Three?
Yeah, I was kidding.
All right, so one thing we love to do on this show
as three guys who love to eat
is look at stadium food and stadium food prices.
Well, we have them from the Super Bowl last night.
The Super Bowl took place in New Orleans at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome.
And this is the menu and prices.
We have on the board at one of the concession stands jambalaya for $18,
grilled alligator sausage po' boy for $18,
ultimate grilled alligator sausage po' boy for $21.
So that's just the sausage po' boy with toppings?
But ultimate.
The shrimp pasta for $20.
I need to ask an ignorant question.
Is the sausage made of
alligator? Yes.
Damn. You ever had alligator? I have never
had alligator. Adam?
I have. And? Tastes like chicken.
Alright. What? Actually does.
Shrimp pasta, $20.
Crawfish pie, $14.
The beer is $17
for
a Budweiser Bud Light
Michelob Ultra. And then the premium large
can beer is also $17. Assorted
PepsiCo products, like Pepsi
and other soft drinks, $7.
Water, $7.
Gatorade, $9.
And Rockstar Energy, $9.
Before we move on to the second board,
what do you guys think of this first one?
Honestly, cheaper than I thought.
Oh, I'm having the sausage po' boy.
Ultimate or the regular?
Ultimate.
I'll pony up the other $3.
I'm going for it.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
No, I'm at the Super Bowl.
Money is no object.
So you thought it'd be more expensive?
Oh, yeah, way more.
I mean, that's still insane.
Yeah.
Also, okay, I know it's New Orleans.
I love seafood.
A little weary of ordering it at a football stadium.
It's pretty fresh.
I hope so.
And I would also say Jambalaya.
If I'm getting Jambalaya in New Orleans,
I'm not getting it at the Superdome.
Yeah, it's still called that, right?
Yeah, no, I'm not getting it at the Superdome.
You know what I don't want at a sporting event?
Soup.
I would do the grilled alligator sausage po' boy.
are you saying that jambalaya might be better at like a restaurant yes perhaps one famous for it
yeah you went to new orleans and got the superdome right i love jambalaya i would eat that no
question but i just want to get it from a restaurant okay let's uh let's bring up this
second part of the menu which is more like snacks and stuff we got nachos for ten dollars ultimate
nachos 18 seafood nachos 25 i have i don't have seafood neither of us i'm interested though thank
you super bowl ultimate nachos 36 that better be the size of a car for 36 american dollars oh man
dude that would that would feed poor i would i would guarantee it better it would hit like lasagna
uh ultimate salsa verde walking taco oh i don't even know what that is a walkie talkie
hey 18 bucks hey for a salsa verde walk can you google that uh salsa verde
walking taco um then they have the same drink menu as the top one what do you guys think about
this food menu while adam looks up the salsa verde walking taco way more expensive um and
therefore scary so a walking taco is when they have chips in a bag and they make it in the bag
and then you eat it with a like a spoon oh i've seen those on tiktok yeah that's a walking taco
The messiest damn thing I've ever heard
Yes, so Tostitos actually makes them
Not necessarily for these guys
But they make them and you can peel them off
In the States and then put the whatever
Kind of toppings and stuff on them you want
But a walking taco is not bread
It's like a
I don't know, some sort of cellophane
Kind of crazy
The ones I saw on TikTok were
This dude had
Like his own food truck kind of pop-up stand thing
And his big promotion that day
Was bring your own bag of chips
and I'll make it in whatever chip bag you bring.
So you saw people bringing like giant bags of chips
and he'd make it in that
and pour like all the meat and the beef on top of that.
Wow.
That's cool.
I'd try it.
It'd be like, it was like five bucks
and I'll put it in your own bag of chips.
It was cool.
I freaking love that.
I think it's a little reasonable.
It's American prices.
So it's like even more for us.
But for the Super Bowl, I feel like this is okay.
That Ultimate Nachos is like 55 Canadian dollars.
oh man holy shit wow seafood nachos is interesting
how how premium large is that beer can too is it one of those double
is it like an 800 mil i'm assuming it's like a regular ass beer oh man you know that's rough
that's $17 for a beer yeah $7 for a water i should be able to fit my head in it for that price
you should my head yep i want it yeah all right next it up next question we got is uh more leaf
stuff this one is from natasha at willie thews on twitter if you could pick a leaf killer to be
on the leaf who would it be you get one leaf killer from all the years of team of people
killing and they have to be this year yeah this year you can't pick one from the past and pick
them in their prime can't make pick marsh and at his prime and when no you're taking the guy this
year i have an answer but i think it's controversial because they're not known as a leaf killer okay
like okay leaf killer i think is defined by you play the leafs and you kill them every time you
play them jake debrusk uh claude geroux jordan stall for some josh anderson josh anderson for
some friggin reason um like do the panthers the panthers just kind of kicked their ass
yeah i don't think you could take all panthers cam atkinson is on that list yeah again weirdly
uh okay this is controversial you you just veto it if you think i'm wrong charlie mcavoy oh yeah
no i agree with that he's beaten the leafs in three playoff series yeah i don't know if he's
been at the focal like at the center of it all but the leafs couldn't score on the bruins last
year and he's a defenseman for the Bruins what about uh Mikey Acemont no Brandon Hagel Mikey
Acemont is oh and one in playoff series against the Leafs there's not a lot of guys who can say
that Brandon Hagel one and one okay I would say the obvious one no no lightning the obvious one
is is um David Pasternak damn he's so good against the Leafs in the playoffs so good so good
he the narrative for at least two of the series he's been in against the Leafs were that he was
underperforming that was last year last year he was underperforming obviously finished them off
in game seven and then I want to say it was 2019 yeah he wasn't having a great series
probably finished them off then too probably did
pasta's a good answer it's got to be a Bruin doesn't it should be Marsh and or pasta
josh anderson's a finance fun answer yeah the thing is with josh anderson though then he doesn't have
the leafs to play and he becomes josh anderson like you want a guy that's actually going to
play good against other teams too and like the thing with josh anderson is there's like seven
eight good games and uh it's a really good answer he has man never has a player been more tantalizing
to me than what josh anderson yeah you love josh i do and and every time i'm like wow he plays the
Leafs he's out of his fucking mind and then Bobby McMahon but he makes like five three quarters it's
crazy you're like oh he can shoot he can skate he's a monster he's huge yeah and then you look
at his stats at the end of the year you watch Montreal play a normal game against not the
Leafs and you're like shit damn yeah I need a guy who can perform against other teams that's what
I'm saying McAvoy or pasta I think is pretty good Jesse who do you got Josh Anderson no I think I
I think is the hilarious answer.
You suck.
Just take him off the board.
If he was a Leaf, it'd be hilarious.
We'll beat Montreal 10 times out of 10
without Josh Anderson.
What about just the Canucks?
Can I just take the best players from the Canucks?
Because we can't seem to beat them at all.
Ovi is also an absolute murderer against the Leafs.
And Malkin.
Ovi and Malkin.
But I feel like Ovi shouldn't count
because he's good against everybody.
Yeah, yeah.
I feel like every team looks at Ovi as an Ovi killer.
I'm pretty sure, though,
that he's got his most career points against the Leafs.
He's played like 88 games.
Maybe on goals per game.
Something like that.
But it can't be total.
That'd be like somebody in the metro.
Oh, true, true, true.
It has to be.
We'll end on this.
I want to shout out Joe Dabney, who designed the Pride merch for SDPN last June.
She was asked to design merch for the San Jose Sharks.
And the jersey she's wearing in this photo was designed by her.
And they wore it in the—oh, Steve's holding up the mug right now, actually, that she designed for us.
And so, yeah, she's only moving up in the world.
It was really cool to see her drop the opening ceremony, the face-off, drop the puck for the opening ceremony there at the Sharks-Dallas Stars game over the weekend where the Dallas Stars crushed the San Jose Sharks 8-3.
And the ceremonial face-off is Mikael Granlund and Luke Cunnin, who I think Cunnin asked to do the face-off with Granlund because they're former teammates as of like a week and a half ago.
Yeah, yeah.
here uh let me bring up the up close on the jersey vid that the sharks released as well
and just to show this off that's some some look at the the crest she designed huge um that's
awesome yeah it was a lot of fun and see her drop the puck so yeah shout out shout out joe for for
only only doing great things and moving up in the world very colorful and obviously uh yeah
signed tyler toffoli jersey he's always at the forefront with this stuff great guy yeah and that's
it very cool end of the show adam do you have anything else you need to get out there nothing
else other than we'll see you again tomorrow when we do a full four nations preview and we'll go
through like play we'll go through like power plays and penalty kills and we'll get deep you
know because it's more than just who started although that usa lineup i saw the forwards
It's a glance at the forest during the show.
Mid.
Yikes.
