Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcf walk.ca the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake The Brendan Shanahan era in Toronto ended yesterday?
Starting point is 00:02:01 Question mark? I say question mark because technically Berube's still around, but we all know he's not going to be in about eight games. So maybe I just wait until Berube's done to say the Brendan Shanahan. Oh, seven. Seven now. That was game 75. You're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:02:15 So maybe I just wait until that's over. But we are almost, we're nearing the end of the Brendan Shanahan era. If you're wondering why, Brendan Shanahan hired all the guys that got us into this mess. So Brad Truliving is Brad Truliving. Brad's record is Leafs GM in the regular season, 129, 82, and 27. Pretty good winning percentage. And here is what he did. And this was making the rounds.
Starting point is 00:02:41 This is from Josh from Covers. Way in his time in Toronto, some of the trades. And actually, it comes from Reddit Leafs. It was Josh that reposted it. but uh fifth round pick for sam lafferty as in they traded sam lafferty remember he didn't make the team oh he did that one yeah oh wow that was that's right at the beginning labushkin for picks in the third and sixth rounds and kareel slepitz i pulled up nhl trade tracker where they have the history of everybody's every gm's trade do it go through it bring it i think it'll be a lot more
Starting point is 00:03:13 comprehensive uh okay i gotta do so there you go okay yeah so sam lafferty and then you got yeah A sixth round pick, Cade Weber. So the Leafs have Cade. He's still in the system. Yeah. Joel Edmondson was acquired from the Capitals for a fifth in 2025 and a fourth in 2020. Sorry, excuse me, a third in 2024 at the March 7 trade deadline 2024.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Connor Dewar was acquired from the Minnesota Wild for a fourth pick and Dimitri Ochvinikov. Of Chinnikov. Of Chinnikov. So, well, okay, we don't need to do a retrospective on each one. And I have an opinion on literally each one of them. I'm so tempted to hear them. Adam, what do you think?
Starting point is 00:03:53 Is Avchenikov good? No, it's not about that. It's Dewar was good on the wild. Then Berube got a hold of him. Then they traded him to the Penguins, and he was instantly right back to what he was with the wild. Yeah. They acquired a good 24-year-old pending RFA,
Starting point is 00:04:12 ruined him, and paid to get rid of him. they're good at that that's pretty awful we got 90 minutes of podcasting i think steve should go through every trade yeah let's do no no uh uh joel edmondson uh remains the same joel edmondson i think we could do it uh that one's fine that's fine i forgot about this trade the leafs traded down so the ducks could trade up and uh that's fine uh and so you know so the leafs got a second round pick out of that and then uh chris tanev was acquired for max ellis and a 2026 seventh round that's a good trade good trade i completely forgot that happened well yeah because they wanted to get him before he went to free agency right and i don't know anything about max ellis what
Starting point is 00:04:54 do you know about max ellis nothing okay uh prospect who they're not gonna use that same day the leafs acquired a seventh and a second round pick uh for a second round pick from the panthers and then october 30th 2024 timothy lilligren became a san jose shark uh they were thrilled to get him the leafs got matt benning a third round pick and a sixth round pick that trade bangs timothy lilligren's good oh you he's so good knock it that the sharks in a playoff race were like yeah we'll give him to the capitals that's one of the things that makes you so upset oh because people are still arguing that timothy lilligren has it it's okay to be wrong and just say i was wrong like like i have been saying all season i've been eating crow on the penguins and
Starting point is 00:05:38 i've been saying man they've been great i've been i've been complimenting the penguins outside of october their start was a little wonky and i've been i've been saying detroit hey detroit man you guys are moving around it's crazy it's great look at buffalo too same thing oh it's okay to be wrong what annoys me is when for seven years people are like no actually you're stupid check this out remember the seth griffith stuff no no you know why because seth griffith was timothy lilligren for forwards except we stopped arguing about it after a couple months it wasn't that exciting we left it alone but timmy we're still doing the guy was drafted nine years ago nine years nine years ago now here's where things get bad this is the trade deadline 2025 this is where
Starting point is 00:06:22 it goes off the rails steve it's connor doer and connor tim it's the connors three ends between them actually four because connor timmins does have the end in his last name um uh uh they go to pittsburgh for only a fifth round pick and gotta give dubious a lot of credit there that's a good old-fashioned depth to nhlers that's such a dubious trade he was so good at trade he was so good at winning trades that don't matter like it was a real strength of his occasionally this and like that sounds marchman for malgan is the one people remember but people forget mccague for hyman oh my god right that was a great trade incredible trade no like this this little thing um that's just that's a pure cap dump yeah and a great move by kyle great move yep uh the leafs
Starting point is 00:07:11 also acquired reese johnson that same day for future considerations in minnesota i have no idea the leafs then and we all know this and we don't need to go through it carlo from minton a 2026 conditional first round pick 2025 fourth round pick we know what the pick is top five protected boston retains 50 of carlos contract and then the leafs acquired lotten a 2025 fourth and a 2027 sixth round pick to the uh flyers for a conditional first round pick and nikita gerbank in the 2027 first round pick is top 10 protected thank god philadelphia retains 50 of lot in scondra uh true living i mean that that is true living in a nutshell yeah you're like oh he's doing fine he's that's okay i wish he didn't do that but trade deadline shows up and he's just
Starting point is 00:08:00 running around with his head on fire because he didn't do enough of the significant work ahead of time which was the criticism we had the whole time yeah and this season i've put a real effort into trying to be consistent with my messaging regarding this front office because we are right we're right and we've been right since day one and here we are and if we want to go past last year's trade deadline we can go to the matthias macelli trade oh god adam if you want to take us through that uh okay matias michelle it's a trade that in a nutshell is fine but it looks stupid when you suck uh third round pick uh to utah for matias michelle on the third of a three year deal for 3.425 million dollars the pick upgrades to a second if michelle gets 50 points
Starting point is 00:08:53 thank god they scratched him for a month so that's not possible then mitch marner uh traded to the vegas golden knights in the tamper gate uh uh issue remember that uh the leafs do get nick waugh on the last year of his three million dollar contract no uh two years left oh he's got another year oh right right now now he's on year four or five right you're right right now he's on year four the leafs also get henry thrun for ryan reeves which you know i still maintain was okay that's fine i was okay and then ryan was like man i didn't like it there anyway uh and then the leafs get close in on their last trade of the brad for living era before this trade deadline so you remember i want you to note the date on this july 17th 2025 they get they give away their
Starting point is 00:09:36 fourth round pick in 2028 the next gretzky is what i refer to it and they get a guy who i i was in favor of this trade me too i still i still am honestly and people are calling like i saw jonah calling it dead contract weight and i get that i get why but this is a man this is dakota joshua he was in the second year he's now in the second year of four-year contract he had just had cancer but the previous year pre-cancer he was incredible for the Canucks in the playoffs he's one of the few guys on this team who actually plays hockey as advertised yeah like I have no problem with Dakota Josh and he hasn't been able to find like a line this year because he had an injury out of camp or something and then he had a lacerated spleen he they were playing really well he was
Starting point is 00:10:20 playing well last rated spleen how do you even get that he's kind of played pretty decently with anyone you've put him with yeah he has like chemistry with matthias macelli and like he was really good with wa and no i like him i don't i don't mind dakota josh i like him uh now the leafs do not make a trade you notice july 17th 2025 and then all these months happen it's like trade deadline march 5th 2026 uh nicholas wa this is the day before nicholas wa goes to the colorado avalanche for the pieces that should have been the original cadre deal the 2027th first round pick which does have a star next to it and uh a 2026 first round sorry fifth round pick excuse me uh and then we'll keep going because who cares about those details
Starting point is 00:11:07 scott lawton in the last minute before the trade deadline gets traded for ottawa's third round pick from the los angeles kings so the los angeles kings held ottawa's third round pick and uh toronto took that one and scott lawton has gone on to do really well in la and he said recently in an interview that he is definitely open to coming back and i sure hope the next general manager signs him because i love that player and i would love to get a jersey now let's move on i'm gonna do that and this one is the most egregious especially in retrospect bobby mcmahon who's still listed as a center i don't know why but he's a winger and he has been unbelievable unbelievable since everywhere you go bobby mcmahon's listed as a center i don't think i've
Starting point is 00:11:48 ever seen him take a shift at center yeah when was the last time he played center like full time i think zero games professionally well i mean like i i don't even know like nhl professionally like in the he played games in the echl i don't think so interestingly enough his face-off percentage with the toronto maple leaves this year is 60 whoa how many face-offs taken i don't know um that the nhl doesn't list that you just go to hockey references yeah okay well i can but or i could but he has not taken a face off center you're not a center he's day he has not taken a face off with the seattle kraken thus far but 11 points in eight games and maybe they're not using them properly uh yeah and they're playing the wrong form of leaf at center and so the leafs
Starting point is 00:12:27 do not get either crack and pick they get a day 2027th columbus blue jacket second round pick and they get a draft pick from the auto or ottawa anaheim ducks a fourth rounder in 2026 this year and what's interesting about those picks is that both of them are decaying in value because both of those teams are on the rise and so those picks will be later on i'm a little dismayed like looking looking at some of the picks they got at how many of them are for next year oh i know it just doesn't help you now which is what you need and like if they don't have a second rounder this year if you're a rebuilding team like a genuinely rebuilding team i guess you don't really mind but you're not like no this supposed to be this sucks this sucks getting a first for
Starting point is 00:13:12 wah sounds great until you realize you're not going to get it until next year how many face off jesse 11 oh that means he won seven yeah he's won six face offs and he's lost uh five guys his face off percentage with the leafs is 60 automatic uh he's oh for one on face offs with the kraken wow oh that's why it says face off percentage is zero yeah yeah that's a little wonky he has 44 career face offs whoa okay there's bobby bergeron that's 44 times the ref went you know what get this guy out like he's never i don't think he's ever intentionally taking a face off who has taken more face offs in their career mitch marner or bobby mcmahon mitch marner like in the last month probably yeah like 300 on the season or something that's that's
Starting point is 00:14:03 okay that's fucking crazy um and we're gonna get to that because torts had his first game yesterday so i want to start all this we want to start all this with a little bit of context um i think it's funny that flames fans are like see we told you and a few flames fans were like we sent him in as a double agent and i thought that was very funny but i also want to warn the flames fans who are dunking on toronto right now remember you had this guy for 10 years we figured it out after three so just let's just pump the brakes a little bit here um we went oh and I do want to say this before we kind of get into where this is going and Steve I'm so glad you brought it up on your video yesterday um I don't think there's a single person in the city of Toronto who wouldn't like
Starting point is 00:14:44 or doesn't like if they've met him Brad the guy Brad for living the person and that's not what it's about it is not what it's about they didn't fire him from being a guy he's still allowed to be one and he's just not allowed to be gm and so you know what but you know what's it's amazing about that is that there's so many guys that like leave town and people are like oh toronto always sewers those guys on the way and i'm like yeah because they fucking sucked babcock people are like people are like oh babcock uh oh yeah toronto just steward him and look what he's oh yeah no okay well then he got hired in columbus and got fired before training camp yeah i think he's a great guy space the punctuation out a little bit better there
Starting point is 00:15:18 but yeah no i totally agree with you yeah no you're right sorry about that but my point is my point is um brad is a good human being i believe it when the leafs say we have the utmost respect for him as a person great ran a disastrous administration yep and that is what happens to people that runs a disastrous administration and i think rather than focus on brad because we have focused on brad you know why brad was fired we've seen the results on the ice steven jesse i think the focus and cj as he always freaking does nails it i love cj's point of view that's why i love the cj show that's why i like chris the person uh he's as he's as philosophical in life as he is in hockey and he knows sometimes things before i even think about
Starting point is 00:16:04 them and i'm like god damn it i wish i was that smart he put the spotlight in his article this morning directly on keith pelly bingo bango bongo that's what it is that's he's the only person in the organization that matters right now honestly uh because every other person you go well what about him what about him what about him every decision to do with the leafs comes through this guy and now he's got no one under him and it's his fault uh he does have a bare bone well not even bare bones he has a management crew and i'm seeing people it's not bare bones he has four assistant general managers yeah but like i'm seeing people talk about the leafs management team like they have any realistic internal candidates for gm i'm not sure they do the
Starting point is 00:16:54 closest thing they have is brandon pridham i'm not sure that he wants to be a gm i don't know i think he likes the eight if he wanted to be he could have been by now i think he's an i think he's a premium agm and you keep him he's a great advisor and you keep him but anyway keith pelly what this does what he has an opportunity to do is break the cycle of i just got here oh you know keith is the cycle of i just got here though keith was gonna get gassed by brad he was always gonna get gassed by brad why are we pretending like he's not gonna get gassed by brad oh okay well let's set our watches for a year from now you mean okay you mean sheldon keith because we're saying keith oh sorry yeah we should we should different sheldon keith was
Starting point is 00:17:41 always going to get fired by true living and no okay we got to be performative and wait a year okay a year is gone now you can fire him all right oh uh shanahan is gonna get fired oh you can't do that because keith pelly just got here all right we'll wait and a year passes all right okay now you can fire them enough holy cow operate like a team with some cones they the leafs and how many times have i said this boys how many times have i said this boys inside their organization i don't know when this began they have this faux stoicism this forced calm and like it permeates the people who work there because it's forced they have this forced calm because they think everyone here is a raving foaming at the mouth lunatic and it's their job
Starting point is 00:18:42 to freaking uh hold hold a freaking spear and freaking keep us at bay oh oh you mean like he's like the spartans we're we're like a cavalry charge yeah and it's they're the uh they're the scottish highlanders with their big trees yes yeah yes william wallace and his crew hold i like where this is going yeah and no you're just sort of not doing anything paralysis by analysis you're just sort of not doing your job everyone every nhl front office in this league worth paying attention to operates like friggin banshees compared to the toronto maple leafs florida actual crazy people tampa insane colorado out of their minds vegas off their rocker and you know who i didn't include in my video that i should have montreal if you want to talk about a team that started all the way from
Starting point is 00:19:44 the bottom and has elevated they operate like nut jobs i would say montreal is more patient than them but i also think they're very sneaky but they're active yeah they are they make moves they're active in the leafs no we have a plan and we believe in the plan and oh for god's sake can you stop giving me how to buckle a belt in an airplane tone and frigging do something they went months and months and months they went almost as long as anyone in the league without making a move when they desperately needed to make a move they had a few waiver claims and a few waiver losses and they fired the assistant coach you want to talk about the greatest example of deck chairs on the titanic holy shit i would like the leafs to operate with a little bit of panic
Starting point is 00:20:32 their lack of operating with any panic whatsoever caused them to panic their inaction caused very poor decision making action at the trade deadline we're gonna wait and we're gonna wait and we're gonna wait and we're gonna wait we're gonna give up our entire future for brandon carlo what we're gonna wait we don't think we're sellers we're gonna wait we're gonna wait uh to scott lawton for i'll give you a kiss like i want to say this too like what the thinking is that if you're if you're if you're patient and you don't make any rash moves or whatever um uh that you can't you you limit your mistakes right right and and what happens and and i'm gonna say carolina's also a very aggressive front office um what happens is you confuse aggressiveness with
Starting point is 00:21:31 impatience aggressiveness is planned impatience is unplanned and what we saw maybe i am not the greatest vessel of this message yeah no but that's what it is now jesse let me read this to you despite a clear lack of hockey expertise keith pelly has been taking a more active role with the Leafs as their losses pile up through 25-26. Recently, during forensic meetings conducted by Pelley with his team of employees that preceded True Living's exit, he was asking questions about team culture and the impact of specific players, according to league sources. Pelley also played an active role in the team's trade deadline decisions earlier this month. Jesse, how does that make you feel? The first thing... That's from CJ. Yeah, that's CJ in The Athletic. It's confusion
Starting point is 00:22:15 on why keith pelly would have any input at all on hockey decisions especially on a day as important as trade trade deadline day and seeing everything that's coming out now about how the pressure is now on keith belly and just looking back on how he's operated since he's got here i think it's clear that there is an infectious disease that runs through this organization now that it's It's being run entirely by Rogers, and it starts with Keith Pelley, and it permeates downwards. And he has no background in running an organization this big. He came in and he immediately cut jobs.
Starting point is 00:22:56 They thought that their entire hockey organization was too bloated. They got rid of many of the behind the scenes people, not AI can do this. I don't know if they're replacing anybody with anything, let alone AI. and we see that it's just it's a skeleton organization that's kind of sitting around doing nothing because they have the option to because maple leaf sports and entertainment prints money they can sit around and do anything they want because they know that the fans are always going to pay 800 to have their kid wave a flag before the game they know even though i look down from the press box and i see there's maybe maybe 16 000 people actually there maybe
Starting point is 00:23:42 even less 15 000 on some of those games there's 18 000 tickets sold yep they might not be showing up but those tickets are sold and they're going the secondary market and the mlse has already made their money initially on those tickets those are all the season ticket holders and they just kind of sit around and they're just bumbling idiots right now and you compare to how rogers has run the baseball operations where you can have your your arguments about shapiro and atkins and i have been as critical of them as anybody but they brought in two baseball people one a baseball person who has experience on the baseball side of it and then also on the business side of it and it was featured in a movie adam said it before i did that's crazy that's crazy i was thinking it
Starting point is 00:24:32 And I was like, Stephen, don't do it. And then you did it. That's amazing. Okay. You brought in a baseball guy who also has business experience from a movie. And lo and behold, he's been running the business side of baseball very well. And then they brought in a general manager who I got my problems with him still. But he wants to employ Brendan Little forever for some reason.
Starting point is 00:24:59 Jeff Hoffman, but whatever. Every team gets one. at least he's running baseball stuff well because he's a baseball guy and keith pelly came in and he got rid of brendan shanahan who's been a hockey guy who's worked in business sides of hockey and they have no one at the top and all they've done is cut and cut and cut and now it's just like a headless monster running around keith pelly's glasses and he doesn't know what he's doing and nobody it's mr burns and smithers running around the power plant except in this scenario there's no smithers yeah it's just mr burns there's nobody below keith pelly to run hockey
Starting point is 00:25:37 now it's i don't know how they're running a giant billion dollar organization like this sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and
Starting point is 00:26:16 i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the taskrabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same-day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the taskrabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle Two in five Canadians will hear the words,

At participating A&W locations in Ontario. sidebar to to what you're saying um we said we've been saying for months that uh the leafs and all
Starting point is 00:28:05 the teams in mlse ew ugly child blue jays yeah precious because ed rogers i'm calling hr loves hello yeah freaking hello young lady yeah loves the jays the leafs human resources yeah yeah um ed rogers loves the jays i've known this about him for a long time it's well known no wonder the jays spend so much and their broadcasts are so good the broadcasts are are insane everything about them is so good and nothing was more on the nose than last night the jays are getting tuned 14 to 3 the most anticipated leafs game in quite a while is about to begin at 10 p.m we know for a fact there's going to be a fight off the opening draw and that fight could be seen by everybody
Starting point is 00:29:06 on sportsnet one which is a premium to the premium channels so turn off the 14 to 3 baseball game in the ninth oh my god it was uh i have to tell you i was talking to people beforehand and maddie's like hey the game started i'm like fucking where what do you mean the game start where is it i couldn't find it either jesse called me a boomer steve i couldn't find it a giant message on the bottom of the screen during the baseball game it was in red and it said the leafs game is starting on sportsnet one and dan shulman said it on the broadcast multiple times okay i was like how have you not figured it figured out it's on sportsnet one i wasn't watching hey hand up i have a guide on my tv hand up guide hand up i'm a dumbass and that's why i missed it but not everyone has
Starting point is 00:30:00 sportsnet one that's that is a problem outrageous they put a sportsnet ontario program on a premium channel so people who don't have that premium channel couldn't access it at that moment yes but you sir i'm a duck in sports and have both channels and there was a giant red banner and you gotta look at the red banner and where to switch the channel i missed it well whatever people were pissed people were rightfully pissed they were rightfully pissed and that's it let's be honest here that's a very sports net thing to do also the sport only they could mess that only only them the sports app sucks oh it's horrible the only apple i have a sony tv and it's the only app on my tv every time i want to open it i have to go into force quit
Starting point is 00:30:42 from the last time i had it open and i have to force quit it and then reopen it because every time i want to reopen it it freezes so i have to force quit this app and i know it's not the tv because it's the only app that i have to do that with you know it's great works tsn works netflix works all the other apps work except for the fucking sports net app maybe the giant television company isn't interested in digital progress I don't I think it's bigger than that Steve I think it's it is bigger than that
Starting point is 00:31:11 by the cable so they make their app shitty yeah yes also can I throw this at you the they hate when we do this they hate when we criticize them because they're not used to being criticized the Leafs are because the other media in this company is owned by the other telecom
Starting point is 00:31:29 so they're not going to go shooting arrows at each other no it ain't hate whenever we say stuff like this which is what everybody says they're it gets back just oh they're really fucking mad i'm like okay well good good get maybe get good at it yeah fix your shit anyway sidebar now let me go through this chris johnston oh and let me uh yeah forget it i'll move on uh after blowing a hole through the front office it wasn't going to be that related it was going to be hockey really but doesn't matter now after blowing a hole through the front office he inherited and the leadership group he lauded because you know he did say it's go time uh
Starting point is 00:32:07 morbid time it's morbid time pelly is on the clock to restructure the top of the organization heading into a summer where austin matthews future with the organization very much hangs in the balance the possibility i wanted to highlight this possibility of a lengthy rebuild is feeling increasingly real and it's not remotely the path pelly or his bosses had planned to go down intentionally and this is what we've been talking about in terms of of executive structure right i hate that we have the ducks game last night we're talking about executive structure this morning but we have to the reason you're seeing a shitty leafs product is because of a shitty leafs layout at the executive level keith pelly said when when he was introduced he was said my job is to be the
Starting point is 00:32:51 sounding board for for the jams come to me talk to me hey what do you think what that sort of thing it's my job that's what he said his job was how can you be the sounding board for nine different franchises it's if you wanted to book an hour meeting with him and every franchise asked at once that'd be a nine hour day of zoom meetings he walked into the building and fired everybody below him and i'm not saying shanahan should have stayed neither are you we're saying replace him yep you probably replaced him at half the cost shanahan's salary was reportedly seven million dollars i'm sure you could find a lineup of qualified people who do it for three and a half shan in retrospect shanahan i still stand by it absolutely had to go well he was a big part of
Starting point is 00:33:33 the carlo trade by the way oh yeah and the lot in trade but push for those if the options were have Shanahan at the helm or have Keith Pelley do nothing, I don't know. I think I'd rather keep Shanahan. Well, I think Keith's biggest problem, and I said this on the broadcast last night. Is he has an impossible job?
Starting point is 00:33:55 Yeah, he does have an impossible job. It's impossible. But beyond that, he didn't recognize a general manager in freeze mode. Brad froze, especially in October. And I think the Seattle game froze him. the the game where marchment runs over um uh stallers carlo does nothing broke them i think
Starting point is 00:34:14 it broke them and i think it froze them and i don't think like the fact that he made a grand total of three waiver pickups until right before the trade deadline that's what he did to fix this team is an unbelievable indictment and that speaks to when we talked at december fire the coach fire the general manager we said it at the time and in retrospect and it's not like we're geniuses here everybody was saying it everybody was saying you got to move on oh no you mean friggin the fans were saying it the fans are like hey listen i've watched hockey long enough and listen i might not be an expert but this sure looks like a team in freefall the orcs storming the castle like that's that's how we're perceived within the organization and they're not going to
Starting point is 00:34:59 have any success if they keep being literally terrified of their own fans for no good reason So Keith, Keith has got to hit this one out of the park or his executive career is done, at least here. He'll be fine. Like he'll find a CEO spot somewhere else. But my point is, at this organization, he's got to win this one. And it's interesting. CJ ends his article. And obviously he references the now infamous quote, we're not here to sell jerseys.
Starting point is 00:35:22 He says, well, yeah, nor playoff tickets. That's that's what he's about. Sorry. He said, well, he's no longer selling winning. And it's anyone's guess who will be wearing the jerseys from this point forward. But CJ, you sneaky little duck. He did it a little better. So when Pelly speaks Tuesday afternoon in Toronto, it's going to be fascinating to hear what the plan is now.
Starting point is 00:35:42 And I can guarantee you this. And this is what pisses the Leafs off, at least at upper management. When Pelly sent out that message to season ticket holders about the renewal, which was about a month ago now, he said, well, we've had a lot of injuries and it's been a compressed schedule. And what these guys are used to is speaking to people that are employed by them. When you went to a Rogers town hall, when we worked there, um, we worked for them and they would say, here's the thing. And everybody would clap because you have to and, and go, yeah, sure. We're on board with the plan.
Starting point is 00:36:14 You try to execute the plan, even though you know, the plan sucks, but you try because that's what the core, that's what you're paid to be there for. You're paid to be, uh, supporting the plan that the guy who's paid a lot more money than you are lines up. The plan rarely worked. Um, but Rogers has so much money that it really didn't matter. And so I, at least from the media side, I think the shock for them was the outlandish, but also completely justified reaction from everybody, except for Sportsnet, weirdly enough, to that letter, which was, hey, essentially, you know, we're not employed by you, right? we don't actually have to buy this and season ticket holders don't have to buy this and we
Starting point is 00:37:06 don't have to suck what you're blowing you know what i'm saying god and i can't stay never heard that talking about hot air okay i can't i can't for the life of me figure out why they don't know that yet that's the part that i don't understand well jesse we got a show title yeah i don't know all right how about this we don't have to smell what you're stepping in all right all right all right i look at this and i go this is a group of people that are not prepared not prepared so cj's right and and listen the the the press conference is happening before two o'clock or sorry at two o'clock we're recording before two steve will stick around and watch and do a video afterwards it'll all be done but i'm guys i i'm i'm actually curious about what you think keith
Starting point is 00:37:54 pelly might do in this because here's what i think is going to happen like today nothing he's going to say we fire brad we respect him we're going to conduct a gm search and uh he'll get asked about the coach be like that's all part of the that'll be the gm's job and he'll be evasive about who he'll be either he'll be evasive about whether there'll be a president's role i hope somebody asked him a tfc question that's what we get seagull in there jonas go jonas that's jesse and i were along the same line uh i'm less interested in what he's going to say because it's just going to be whatever corporate speak um because that's his language i would like for today the toronto media to earn their reputation i want them to grill this guy
Starting point is 00:38:44 like a kebab oh yeah i i i want this make it hard to manage here not hard to play here i yeah yeah i mean yeah sure yeah you know what i mean it the players got to play all these games and they're getting asked all these questions like as soon as they got off the ice and and everything this guy is available never never which is why he got asked the leafs question at a tfc press conference and he was like that's not what we're doing here okay well you're never available yeah keith we'll answer that at a different time i hope today's the time sir i hope they grill him for 45 minutes i hope steve simmons stands up and goes i have a five-part question like i i really do because for once the toronto media is united yeah we've all taken a
Starting point is 00:39:38 break and recognized our common enemy darren dragger and elliot friedman linking arms like we we have questions because there's so many things you can point at over the how many years you've been here two yeah three uh where you could just go hey this never made sense and then it panned out even worse than it looked like it was going to or the i i would love to be there to ask about the cycle of i just got here and finally breaking that and i would love to ask about not conducting a gm search after firing kyle dubas simply getting the available guy with the most experience and they're going to follow that up by doing the exact same freaking thing with doug armstrong doesn't it seem like a foregone
Starting point is 00:40:27 conclusion that there you know what we didn't go old enough must go older we must go older it's the uh it's the star wars more yeah more age more we must get the gm and poho president of hockey ops from the 28th place team in the nhl the blues have been incredible for like a month now and their 20 holy shitting eighth and that's the savior for the love of god like let rob long i want i do want to hold you on that because i want to run through the candidate okay okay please do yeah hey steve you showed up to work today looking tight and right and sharp and you look temperature regulated i yeah what do you attribute that to well those are all things that help describe my butt um and my butt is currently in a pair of doer jeans that's right cradled you could
Starting point is 00:41:24 say doer jeans now not only do you not have to wash your jeans as much because they've got the uh the fact that you have like temperature regulation built into the but the antimicrobial fibers keeps the bad smelly stuff out you know what i'm saying look at that look at steve wow throwing just laying it on the table your foot got a little too close to my coffee i'm sorry I had the decency to take off my shirt. It would have been cool if you kicked over the coffee onto Jesse's keyboard. Uh-oh. I don't know if it would have.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Listen, doer jeans and doer clothes are good enough to wear casually, sometimes on a podcast if you got one of those, or out to a fancy dinner. It's completely up to you. And they don't just make jeans, Jesse. No. They have shirts and toques that I have. I love my doer toque. And they have t-shirts, just like basics.
Starting point is 00:42:07 They have shorts. I have doer shorts as well. They have everything. I was in a Dewar the other day switching something out because the size didn't fit me. And the manager was very kind. It's the store on the Ossington. Oh, yes. That's a lovely store.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Great store. Now, listen, if you love Dewar as much as we do, you should probably get some. And why don't you get 15% off your first order just for giving it a try? Why not? Dewar.ca slash SDP. D-U-E-R dot C-A slash S-D-P. 15% off. Go to Dewar.ca slash S-D-P.

You've got to try breakfast at A&W You've got to try breakfast at A&W And what better way than with the delicious Pret Organic Coffee starting with just one dollar all day every day now until December 31st
Starting point is 00:43:27 You've got to try breakfast at A&W at participating A&W locations in Ontario like i get you and i don't want to take you off course but i think we're gonna miss some of the magic of steve dangle reactions if we don't get it in the context of whom else got it okay is that fair because everybody gets upset in the comments oh adam always derailing steve i'm like no i'm just trying to keep it on track here no we want to maximize the shareholder no no steve derail steve adam all right now jesse steve on the one thing i want to say i was gonna say rail steve and this isn't but yeah let's rail steve uh one thing i want to say the trade deadline according to anthony petrelli maple leaf hot stove you should be reading anthony if you're not the trade
Starting point is 00:44:10 deadline was a huge missed opportunity and short of the least falling far enough to retain their 2026 first round pick every single game they've correct kept craig berube berube behind the bench has been a mistake now that has been played out in los angeles in colorado and in um seattle with the players that they've let go right it's it's very clear berube and we could talk about maybe He actually might have been a net positive last night, but Berube is as good as gone. So this is not just a GM search. It's a coach search. So when I go through all of the names, I'm concerned about some of these names and who
Starting point is 00:44:48 they might hire. So let's start with the obvious one, which is one we've been hearing for well over a year is Doug Armstrong. Can I read a banger tweet, please? Rob Wong goes, would love for MLSC to be a little more creative with the GM search than just give it to Doug Armstrong. agreed that's it in a nutshell agreed you're just doing the same freaking thing again yep yep and so uh doug armstrong so hilariously guys and i don't believe this for one fucking second
Starting point is 00:45:16 okay but as a uh as an insider you've got to be you got to be more measured than we have to be okay yes so i know i know uh and we know this from having richard petty former ceo of maple sports and entertainment on the show that informal tampering tampering happens all the time when when richard petty was quote-unquote courting brian burke the whole thing with the ducks was uh because he was the gm and president there at the time he would say like hey brian sure look good in blue and white but it would be an informal conversation and not tampering right doug armstrong the thing the report was from from dregs and i believe this from dregs leafs might be interested but will st louis let him out of his deal oh my god and and he has to do that because
Starting point is 00:46:08 it's true they might not not likely though their owners must be so pissed off oh yeah apparently they are pissed which i think is why dreg said it because they're getting furious with it that's the that's the well i mean the guy who literally runs your show is rumored to be leaving for a year who grew up a leaf fan and is from sarnia yeah and is under contract yeah uh now you also initiated a plan where he wasn't going to be the general manager anymore a couple years ago and that hasn't really worked out all that well because the teams just continue to get worse but um they can't decide what the hell they are yeah so i don't think the blues are a great example of a well-run organization at the moment i like that well doug has obviously had some success
Starting point is 00:46:54 i like his willingness to do stuff no one does like going out and doing double offer sheets and getting both guys bang bang that's awesome love that but at the end of the day you do have to look at the standings and be like oh there's only four worse teams jesse that's pretty bad what do you like about doug armstrong there's what do you like about him as president and general manager big thunderstorm outside right now but you can't hear it on the mic oh i'm very distracted i'm gone for the rest of the show sorry what do you let's let's instead of going like this is bad let's go okay positive speaking what could doug armstrong bring to the leafs in your estimation i he has many qualities that bradshaw living did not have which is an ability
Starting point is 00:47:42 to do things he is a man decisive who likes to act on his instincts and will make decisions quickly i like that i like that he is a hockey person for a long time i know that there's probably some i don't know a lot of people out there who probably want to go in a more non-traditional direction but i do like the fact that somebody will be in the top role i don't think he should be gm actually i think he should be president yeah i'm i'm into him as president yeah i think as president you have somebody who's worked in the game for a long time and knows the people within the game and you don't have keith pelly who is running the who is running the european golf tour an hour ago trying to run a hockey team you have somebody who has experience
Starting point is 00:48:31 running a hockey team running a hockey team i like that i think that is good for the president role So I think that just on the baseline, that's a good barrier for entry there for Doug Armstrong to run the Leafs. Do I think his decision making in terms of the actual personnel in the Blues has been great as of late? No, I think he's done a mediocre job running the Blues. But I think that's irrelevant to his job as a president of Emma's as of the Toronto Maple Leafs. But as president, he would effectuate and control some of those moves. Sure, sure. He would definitely have a lot of input on day to day operations and some of the well, I wouldn't even say day to day operations, some of the bigger trades that would go down. But I would trust the GM that's in place because I like that structure of president and then general manager and then the assistants. And I don't think you should have the GM president role. And I would trust that Doug Armstrong would be a little more hands off and run more of the overseeing of the organization and handhold the GM a little bit and guide them into the directions that they need to go, but also let them go when he needs to.
Starting point is 00:49:37 And that the person below him would be a person, hopefully, like Brandon Pridham, who's more creative and can step into that role and make more bold decisions with a different kind of mind and that they could work in tandem. i doug armstrong is a good candidate for this you know they say judge a gm based on the state they left their team in now obviously the blues nobody gets fired leaving their team in a good state no but like that's like that is a little bit of a the blues are in 28th yes but a lot of their best parts are either young prime or entering prime they've done a pretty good job of like they've done well in the trades where they've been sellers um they do set a high price on their guys and they're willing to wait yeah and they're infuriating and we we've talked about that because like from a content perspective it's getting you know freaking blue balled on
Starting point is 00:50:33 robert thomas and colton pareko is annoying braden shen braden shen well and then they finally do it though and it's a decent price i think he's creative but like at the end of the day you know we talk about well they've been there and they won it's the least replicatable replicatable least repeatable there you go stanley cup maybe ever yeah the 2019 cup i that's not a formula for success no be the worst and then all of a sudden go on a heater no and like they were pretty good after that cup run and who knows maybe they could have done more damage were it not for uh covid we'll never know too bad so sad it happened um also tampa exists uh i don't know i just i would like to what was the stats like out of the 16 teams that
Starting point is 00:51:36 are currently in a playoff spot like 11 of them have a gm who had no gm experience before joining the team wow i saw i saw that last night i'll try to find the tweet or something but you gotta think bigger or more creatively than let's simply just get the oldest man totally and i don't think Doug Armstrong should be taking a GM job he should be taking a president job and the Leafs should be hiring a GM I need a leader who will get soldiers you know what I mean so even if he has the title of GM I want him to assemble a staff of people who are doing all the work right which which front offices have like that was Tulsky for a long time right like uh Don Waddell was the GM in the Carolina Hurricanes but everyone knew if you were getting a phone call it was Tulsky but I think
Starting point is 00:52:30 the new world is that that's the president guy and yes your soldiers are your general manager plus all the other people yeah like i don't think doug armstrong is settling for less than president yeah he should we'll tell you i'm not gonna do this he shouldn't not at this point in his career no not with years left on his deal but like i would love to know more about how the penguins are run for example so dubas is president dubas made himself there's a bit of americans there i think with dubas yeah he didn't have to do that yeah but they all have it you know like i'd hold it against him if there weren't 31 other people also he should have named jason spezza his general manager that would have been cool he's the agm and i think he does a lot of the day-to-day stuff
Starting point is 00:53:10 and he could have easily just named him gm like i want to know what spezza does on a day-to-day basis i want to know what everyone else in that front office he breaks bread with the people he'd go to war with damn what's that the west clark thing oh my god now it's jim rutherford and patrick alvin it's that situation let me know like let me move on the next one let's let me move on the next one because we got to get through some of this stuff and get to the game uh the guy that just left the blues front office pete shirelli um i will burn everything i own will you hand in your fandom no it'll be hilarious again it'll be like the dave nonas era part two it'll be fun that's how this show started you're with you're with us till you die steve yeah you're not gonna leave
Starting point is 00:53:54 beliefs i don't get your le is your guy get your macarthur sword back out big daddy let's go here's the only thing that man i don't even know where that thing is here's the one thing that gives me some comfort shirely is always rumored to be in on these jobs and he never gets them yeah right i sort of like when pierre pierre mcguire was going to be a coach in the league again right i think he's going to be hired to be the ceo ceo of yappin because that's what he does when uh jobs are available like listen this was important to do now because the preds are interviewing everyone like there are there are positions available and they're gonna get filled um pete shirelli get out of my face yep like if you need them like again i don't know i was gonna say like as an agm
Starting point is 00:54:46 i don't know whatever well that's what doug had him as so he could still end up yeah but like why is he that's a lateral move yeah right well he left the blues organization so i would imagine he thinks he's got employment somewhere please god no now uh the next one which would have been exciting were it not for the extension announced this morning james nill jim nill in dallas no was he seriously yep dallas when was that just announced this morning brilliant friedman because dallas knows they're not dumb they did this on purpose they did it on purpose that's not a conspiracy theory they did this that's they're a they're brilliant organization away from even just thinking about taking the leafs job they've shut it down here's
Starting point is 00:55:28 a bunch of money you're staying here okay genius son great great team the next one of a beast the next one and this is one i do not understand and keeps coming up on the streams and i know there's a full court press PR campaign happening this person has a book out were they to come on this show I would be like but what's your experience though Chris Pronger people like him because they think he's smart I'm not saying that he's not smart people like him because he worked at player safety hey Shani did too right people like him because he's a Stanley Cup winner what experience does he have well so we can't talk out of both sides of our mouths here you know 11 of 16 general managers had no no quote-unquote relevant experience but they'd
Starting point is 00:56:15 worked their way up my thing is so did Sackick so did Verbeek so did uh Iserman all those guys worked as AGMs for years and worked Breezewell Breeze yeah but I'm talking former player Breezewell is a former player it's not is he oh actually I'm not sure now I'm like wait am I thinking i don't know i might be i don't know patrice breezewell matthew darsh sure matthew darsh there you go the point i'm trying to make is i'm not saying chris pronger wouldn't make a great general manager but we're gonna we're gonna take the end of what could be the end of the matthews era and we're gonna give it to a guy and we got no track record at all i think i would have questions i think it's fair and i know everybody likes chris pronger in terms of he's a charming
Starting point is 00:57:01 interview there's no question he's great on the air he's extremely charming he he also talks in a very calm sort of measured tone and he wears glasses now because of the eye injury and so you're like wow he wears glasses he might go to the library from time to time he's he's funny buddy guy he's funny banter guy there's a reason he was a captain of teams oh yeah um i'm not saying that chris pronger wouldn't make that but i do think drager called it this morning drager called it the biggest gm job in hockey so we're gonna put somebody with no experience at the head of that i think i'm gonna tell you right now what i want is a little bit of experience yeah it doesn't have to be as a gm it could be an agm there's gotta be i do not want somebody who's just gonna step in
Starting point is 00:57:42 the first day and go i don't really have everybody's phone number there's got to be a happy medium between doug armstrong and chris pronger yeah right um i'd love it if he was a member of this organization i would i yeah um i don't think the leafs alumni would love it i think they're still pissed that that shani was running this thing um but the leafs alumni need to remember that if you want to be a part of the management group here you got to put in the hours everybody wants matt sundin i want matt sundin to be a part of this eventually he's got kids and they're like preteens he's not leaving sweden right you gotta you can't just get it because you were here you gotta you gotta earn it i'd love mats to have a bigger role in the organization but yeah like i
Starting point is 00:58:24 don't think he's leaving sweden i think that's where he's not right now yeah um you know maybe maybe he takes on a bigger role where he's here more often um that'd be awesome that'd be awesome dude like why is every front office stuffed with former players and like there's none there's none here berube was elite for five seconds yep right um that'd be neat i'd love chris pronger to join the team i'd like gary as on the strength and condition boss i mean sure be a part of it but i'd hire gary roberts if for nothing else that to just take him away from all the other teams but my point is though you got to get in and learn yeah and i that's where my reservations with and listen if pronger comes in they win a cup the first year i'll be the first one to say great
Starting point is 00:59:12 boy i'm glad i was wrong i'd love it if he took up an attitude like jason spezza where jason spezza with the leafs was legitimately very funny because like he gets hired by dubas and you just see him in the stands with a notepad like jotting things down like it's like it's an internship and you're like that's jason spezza yeah if pronger was willing to do that sort of thing that'd be great yeah absolutely take him on here's another name on the three you guys kevin adams form relief again maddie's shaking her head no you don't want kevin adams look good his his stock has gone up his stock has gone up you can't deny it we said it earlier was it late last week early this week yeah but i think everyone is sitting there going do i want to be
Starting point is 01:00:00 the guinea pig for this because we're all wondering like is he actually kind of good at this or the worst why were you able to assemble a team that is clearly good but they were dog shit for you i you see that with coaches you almost never see that with gms it's still one of the most confusing things ever and i'm not sure i want the leafs to be the guinea pig for that jesse kevin adams what do you think we don't have palm trees ah true what very true palm trees okay no i don't know kevin adams he could be i think i we did this what a couple episodes ago he has the i guess pedigree now to say that he could be a decent agm he can't walk into a billion a building and run the operation we've proved he's proven that he got fired for a reason but he clearly has some
Starting point is 01:01:00 sort of ability to scout scout talent because buffalo has a good collection of talent right now and he did that so i'm willing to give him that i'm willing to give him a role within an organization as long as he's not the guy running the thing jim nill extension why don't you just kick me in the balls adam just okay sorry those are the names i couldn't get past that those are the names right now which is small and not good enough satisfactory well and this is why the Leafs need to do what Rob Wong said Rob's a smart guy we know Rob uh conduct a search Josh Cloak in the athletic throughout some other names give it to him have any less Brandon Pridham you didn't mention well because we already kind of mentioned that off the thing which is he seems to want to
Starting point is 01:01:46 just be an agm so you're just no well i would love to i would love to try i would i bet he i'm interested in doug president pridham gm assembles his own staff i think that would be very interesting a lot of so you know you were talking about the rogers cuts jesse like they're not done they're never done they're no they are never quarterly they cut cut cut cut but they're gonna fire my guess is they fire every member of the coaching staff except i they probably keep lalonde and sullivan i think is a wild card he might just end up back with the marlies they might bring everybody back steve i don't think so no the keith valley might sit on his hands and be like Yeah, it's the next guy's job.
Starting point is 01:02:36 Oh, damn it. Next up, Jason Spezza. Well, he's not going to leave Pittsburgh. Yeah, I don't think so. It might be early for him to take it. This is what Josh wrote. It might be early for him to take a general manager role if he would be even interested in leaving Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 01:02:48 But with an experienced president above him, it could be worth considering Spezza and the energy he could bring. I think there's a reason he left the Leafs immediately to go join Kyle. It's a fun dream. yeah i think it was shanahan that was the reason though i don't think that he is like soured on toronto grip a leaf fan lived in rosedale like he's not uh i i just think that jason wants to
Starting point is 01:03:13 be a gm i wouldn't rule him out completely i'd be fascinated by that uh go ahead jess what else you got next up this is a name you may or may not know sunny meta i do know that is an agm in florida meta is a former data scientist blogger and professional poker player oh talk to me it's The two Stanley Cups Meta has as an analytically inclined assistant general manager of the Panthers that should stick out. Meta has helped put the Panthers on the cutting edge of the NHL, and the Leafs should want to consider as many forward thinkers as possible. Why stop there?
Starting point is 01:03:47 The most notable success they have had as of late came under Dubas, who was never afraid to think outside the box. Get Meta and Gregory Campbell. Both AGMs from Florida. no like that's a great name great name i'm into it you're into it big time i i love that you should always poach from organizations that are more successful than you always always always 10 times out of 10 how do the fit panthers do it who let's find out from the guy i'm in i'm in and and agms do the grunt work so i want the grunt work guy absolutely i love that pick there's a pick now
Starting point is 01:04:24 we're now we're cooking yes like yes okay what else we got uh josh also threw out brett peterson from the panthers front office uh we should also mention another panthers assistant gm brett brett peterson peterson has been with been with the panthers since the 2020 season was previously an nhl player agent since 2009 buddy i don't mind there's a little player agent tent hughes player agents are having a bit of a moment you know pent hughes and julian briseois and dubas was a player agent he was yarn croaks agent like you know those guys they seem to i mean you're very well connected as an agent and you do know how players fit in but i i had someone reach out to me and they said what about judd moldaver and i was thinking about it judd moldaver connor mcdavid
Starting point is 01:05:10 austin matthews roman yosi billion high profile guys but my first thought was i don't know if he could take the pay cut like he's gotta be making more as an agent than 100 he's gotta be with the clients he has yeah i don't think he's from what i've heard about judd he's an agent through and through that's what i've heard it's interesting but a fun idea another name patrick alveen what why the vancouver canucks continue to be in a state of flux through and up and down through an up and down rebuild it's worth wondering if the canucks general manager is let go from his current position would at least consider hearing him out in an interview do you think he's gonna get let go i don't think he's gonna get let go i thought he was spearheading
Starting point is 01:05:55 uh no i saw in a report um i don't remember if it was was it for each i don't i don't know it it doesn't sound like uh his days are long there really yeah interesting well you know it's it's an interesting thought the thing i'll say is that he didn't put together the team that got to the second round he didn't all those guys were there and if you look at the team three years ago when the problem started between horvat and jt miller and then pedersen and jt miller and then jt miller and playing hockey the the the way that the canucks handled it was bungled that the guy to get rid of the guy to move on from even though you love his passion is jt miller they'd have been better holding on to horvath adam all i'm hearing here is the gm of a western canadian team
Starting point is 01:06:47 that's bad and we're not sure who to blame the badness on and that's the guy who got fired yesterday that's exactly that's why i'm saying no one no one okay yeah well you know that is just he sucks but like is it his fault that's funny and yo look at the contracts he signed And Lankanen's contract's been a disaster. Demko! Demko's been a disaster. That didn't make sense the day they signed it. I know.
Starting point is 01:07:14 I don't like Alvin at all for that. I don't like it at all. And I think there's been dysfunction in that front office. I've heard some unbelievable things that I can't report. And I'm like, you know, I just, I don't know if they're sensational. So you're like, nah, I don't know. But I just feel like there's so much chaos there. I don't know whose problem this is, but I don't want any of it to be mine.
Starting point is 01:07:35 Yeah. There's an element where I'm like, maybe, but no. Again, I'm not going to be the guinea pig here. No, no, no, no. Those are some more names. Okay. I like going, hey, we did okay there.
Starting point is 01:07:46 Hey, you know what Colorado did when they were... Josh did okay. Yeah, we didn't do anything. We, good job, guys. When Colorado was bad and they were looking for a general manager in 2018, who did they go after? A successful team on the rise,
Starting point is 01:07:59 the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kyle Dubas. That's right. I'd be going to Colorado going, who's good there? who's who's on tulsky's staff that tulsky would say is his because that's a guy i would have wanted as well as eric tulsa and you'll be able to afford them because their owner's cheap exactly and he just bought an nba team so he's definitely cheap now um so anyway all that to say uh it should be clear as mud who the general manager is going to be unfortunately it looks
Starting point is 01:08:24 as though it's clear as day and it's going to be at very least dog armstrong running some sort of administration we're just not sure how deep have you ever found that the hungrier you get the lazier you get yeah like usually you want to be lazy after you eat but you're like i'm so hungry i don't even care i can't do anything yes yeah what if you could eat well and have meals ready in two minutes oh but adam that's impossible unless tempo gives you some fresh balanced meals in two minutes so you can eat the way you want to you don't lose any time because a lot of times like jesse goes right into editing the show afterwards there's no like lunch break for jesse Jesse, you just fired in the microwave.
Starting point is 01:09:01 Yes, that is correct, Adam Wilde. Thank you for adding to that, Jesse. Also, they're chef-crafted, fresh, and dietitian-approved. And they are meals delivered right to your door. Even Maria Sharapova and Jesse Blake, both high-caliber athletes, they use this. Who's taller? I was just about to ask. Very good.
Starting point is 01:09:20 Who's better at tennis? Because I know you play tennis. Oh, yeah. Who's better at tennis? You know, the people need to know. Jury's out. I've never seen them play. For a limited time, Tempo is offering our listeners 60% off your first box.

Starting point is 01:10:29 all day, every day now until December 31st You gotta try breakfast at A&W at participating A&W locations in Ontario Now, let's talk about the game last night
Starting point is 01:10:44 which I called on the stream and Jesse pointed something out I said this is probably the last relevant game the Leafs play this year and Jesse rightly pointed out game 82 Jess yes I don't know I don't think I pointed this I think somebody tweeted me this but the last game of the season is against the Ottawa Senators for the Toronto Maple Leafs so there's playoff implications possibly on the line for the Sens and the Leafs could play spoiler at the end of the season it is the last guaranteed relevant
Starting point is 01:11:13 game guaranteed so with there may be more consequential Leafs games to come depending on uh who they face and who's fighting for a playoff spot damn dude sharks sharks need that win kings kings need that win washington might be mathematically eliminated but they need that win islanders need that way lilligra needs that florida doesn't matter dallas doesn't matter and then ottawa yeah yeah that ottawa game might be fun yeah now radko gudas uh from jonah sigel radko gudas and why he's playing through injury to face the leafs i stand behind my own mistakes and i want to address it myself that was pre-game and the first period uh started off with pazetta and domi on the ice gudis on the ice and domi starts to drop the gloves before the pucks even
Starting point is 01:11:55 drop and here we go we got a fight and notably in the fight guys radko gudis does not punch back at all doesn't throw a punch and and like think about it from a duck's perspective like i i think it was stupid that he continued to play in that game but like if you're a duck you'd die for that guy now i respect how gudas handled this yeah i mean i still hate what he did sure but i respect i respect how he handled it yeah i didn't respect later on in the game when posetta went after him he turtles and then the ref grabs posetta and then gudas comes back in but that's his florida panthers showing wow that's um that's what he's and that's hockey right like so whatever but so the first period was like that's the first period and the ducks go up two to nothing in that period
Starting point is 01:12:36 and you get goals from carlson and gochi i believe and they're looking good gochi got hurt before scoring a goal and then left yeah mccabe gave him a cross check he scored and then he left the game now the leafs uh then go into the second period it's more raw there was a lot of penalties called and the leafs one of the major things they did do in the first period was kill a five on three uh-huh nobody wanted to really mention it but that five on three turned out to be really really important it's crazy watching bo grew out there on a five on three i was like couldn't have saw this a month ago no no no but here we are and the leafs are down three to one at the end of the second period and here's what i think happened and here's where i'm going to give ruby props
Starting point is 01:13:22 has every player regressed under him with the exception of william neilander who doesn't listen to him uh yes every player has regressed and plays worse under just don't listen i mean you know what morgan riley might be an all-star next year if he's still with the leafs under a different coach like maybe i'm not being hard on maybe i'm being harder on riley than i need to be but the it is very clear that berube said at the end of the second period guys you got it out let's win this freaking game go and try to win this game because these points matter for these guys these points matter for these guys big time i can tell you there wasn't a moment last night where i was like yeah team tank screw that dude screw that i wanted those two points i wanted the ducks to
Starting point is 01:14:09 leave that rink pissed off so the leafs and they did we'll get to that so the leafs not only tie the game back up but morgan riley who had a phenomenal game on the offensive side of the puck sorry but he was atrocious defensively and he and him and carlo are so awful together it's it's actually shocking i i it's shocking i'm gonna eat the blue line like it's just knife through butter on it i'm gonna wait until i'm medically cleared and then pop bottles the day the leafs trade him carlo carlo um uh and so doctor i need green light the leafs traded brandon carlo morgan riley score shorthanded leafs took another penalty it was a bench minor because it was a their only penalty of the third yes uh and the leafs are funnily enough second in the entire
Starting point is 01:14:58 nhl in too many men calls it's still it's part of their dna it is it legitimately is uh the the they don't know how to change lines they don't know how to do it and they haven't known how to do it for a long time changing two guys at once in three on three overtime are you stupid well is this the first time you've ever seen a three on three what's the matter with you two at once all right let's see how that shit works out oh here they come now it worked out pretty good short-handed but then leo carlson because he's really good who had left the game looked like he was hurt came back dude i was looking down with the sound off when that happened and i looked up and i saw it was him with no weight on his leg and i went
Starting point is 01:15:45 oh shit oh oh my god why did it have to be him oh you think you did it well i was just i was just king leonidas standing under the arrows blotting out the sun and the arrows are my mentions for anybody who is not aware steve wished that leo carlson's knees would no i didn't i just wanted the leaves to be big and scary at him i was really i was relieved when he returned to the game i was relieved when i saw the replay and i was like oh no one did anything he just hit his own teammate but i was relieved when he returned to the game the leafs uh go up four to three but leo carlson there is no puck there was a puck there was a puck jesse no puck am i march simpson what is this that's my very good steve dangle
Starting point is 01:16:37 i think it's spot on doing it spot on about as good as greg washington's hat guy so yeah greg's hat guy's funny um so so we get and i'm like i i say it on the on the stream i'm like overtime does not benefit the toronto maple leafs no and it was four out of four i'm like well that was nice they pushed it to overtime no domey either no domey no posetta uh and we could talk about that no no like I mean for the context of overtime yeah and so the Leafs are going to be able to roll out like Tavares Nylander and McCabe which always is their first line and then it's like the uh the the Ducks could go with Carlson and Lacombe or Carlson or Lacombe to start whichever they want and then you've got Leo Carlson and Beckett Seneca and Killorn and
Starting point is 01:17:26 Granlin and all these guys uh Crider whoever you want right I'm stunned the Leafs won so the Leafs go into overtime gentlemen and the they probably gave the ducks three or four beautiful chances to win that game stolars was kind of great he was not great earlier there was no he was not a couple of goals that for sure he shouldn't you know he was concentrating a little too hard on fighting which in his defense would have been fun but but with 10 seconds to go and i remember saying that So it was like, well, it looks like we're going to a shootout, which also doesn't benefit the Leafs unless they can get something going here. Again, less than 10 seconds count across the blue line, cry size to Riley and John Tavares must have eaten like a Mario star and just sped to the net. And he's way faster than people give him credit for.
Starting point is 01:18:21 Riley feeds him this beautiful pass through legs. Tavares is able to put it in. it's like three seconds to go and the leafs are gonna win well they win the game awesome so there are things i wanted to give people the the round you know sort of the round out the game but there were a couple things in this game i gotta be honest guys that bothered me first off george peros being there um you know he only shows up when it's a team he played for well and it and to defend aggressors yes like yeah you show up in tampa you show up why are you there why are you there to make sure the aggressor stays on top oh well i'm there because the leafs are mad yeah why
Starting point is 01:19:00 uh i'm there because tampa's mad at florida yeah why and you're there to keep the score uneven later on in the game i mentioned pesetta on gudis the refs are getting in the way of pesetta fighting vial or veil or how do i pronounce so stupid i hate that shit so much listen if someone's getting jumped i understand your role as a linesman trying to break it up vial want to poseta poseta wanted vial what are you doing let him go yeah when it's two willing combatants why are you getting in the way especially because that's what they're paid to do both of them now poseta took he took it too far yeah and you know what's crazy is that i've seen that in other games and this is where i i lost it on the refs
Starting point is 01:19:46 the thing because i felt like and maybe i'm maybe i'm wrong here maybe cold light a day it's different but i have to be honest i have seen the panthers do that i've seen brad marshand do that with the bruins and the panthers where he's pushing back on the ref pushing him away i've seen matthew kachuk do it i've seen brady do it yeah but it's pesetta but it's pesetta and and the the linesman said go to the box and then they're just kicking him out of the game and i thought they changed their mind you're right yeah he went to the box and that's why he broke his stick on the whale because he was like what the fuck it's bullshit you know it was bullshit and And it's not because I want somebody on Anaheim to get injured here,
Starting point is 01:20:19 but this is a feisty game. The two teams hate each other. Let them go. I wanted two guys who have already fought this season to fight because they wanted to. That's always been allowed. What are you doing? Stupid.
Starting point is 01:20:33 So, long story short, the refs tried to game manage this a little bit. The Matthew Nye's penalty in the first period where he just grabs Beckett Seneca. i've seen teams do that all year long but they're just like you know what no five on three fuck you um or five on four that was a five on four uh they were there to keep the score on even it was it was a little bit on george's a little bit the ref show so i became as the game went on you know you you start the game and you're sort of ducks right but at the end of the game i was just like man the rest fucking suck man i feel like the ducks thing is resolved it's over yeah but i will say this the ducks played the leafs twice this year lost both of them by blowing a
Starting point is 01:21:16 3-1 lead pu that's pretty bad jesse the leafs were happy to lose games on march 12th they had given up on the coach they had come through the trade deadline they had lost some friends but even before the trade deadline they were happy to lose they they were not they were not engaged and since then there have been games where they've been actually engaged and tried um i'm curious about what your thoughts are on this group of guys who when they decide to can actually play some hockey are you setting up your theory that you want to run it back no no no no i think my because adam's been soft launching he wants the majority of the team to come back because of what he's seen i got five guys especially riley five guys yeah five guys
Starting point is 01:22:07 maybe six i want i want grew on this roster yeah i want cow and knives on this roster because i think they have learned like this is the one thing that i'm thrilled about in the ducks i can thank you for this um the the the time of most of the guys not standing up for their guys even non-fighters is over no one learned that lesson so clearly as cowan because nylander got you know pulled down by minchikov after nylander ran the goalie let's be honest and he just went and it's fighting the boston game that was cowan again it's a door off the door off insane child yeah you're an insane person no cowan's been awesome what uh so i want grew because i like the way he plays nice cowan unless you got to trade nice for like a you know a big swing on
Starting point is 01:22:54 a defenseman that you desperately need better be a swing i i want matthew's back i'm good with kneelander coming back but i'm also good if that changes and brings you something else that you need and perhaps younger you know kneelander's at his highest points per game in his career that's so it's so funny he's the one that doesn't listen to berube it's so funny he had four points yeah it's ridiculous he had four points it was it was delightfully kneelander because he had four points and he runs the goalie cowan uh jumps in there the whole team jumps in there and what's willie doing he gets up like an uncle who's been sitting in a chair for two hours and let me just let me get in there and let me just hey hey let's just why don't you calm down just grabs a guy
Starting point is 01:23:47 softly hey why don't you calm down willie would it kill you to lift a finger man would it kill you it might that is what i've met that man many times he is if not viking then why viking shaped he is big and strong and yeah it makes him good at hockey it makes him good at hockey but the best players in the league are good at hockey and give a shit and you're asking too much this swedish man no and i and i know that's a ridiculous thing to point out when he scores four points in a comeback win it's not ridiculous because that's what it's been for the nine years yeah but you're not pointing out anything new but you're also pointing out the correct thing that is that meter does not go anywhere with him if he had a flaw that is certainly it if if i look
Starting point is 01:24:42 at the leafs of the late 90s early 2000s all of those guys with the exception of a couple would have done what cowan did i'm thinking about you know course and tucker roberts uh new and dyke even would do that sundeen absolutely would do that whole jonas hoglitz you know who wouldn't though who well no he could be a bit crazy alexander mcgillney and so if you got a guy yeah he could be insane and now that i think about it i do have to tell you like rightly or wrongly i think it's possible to have extraordinarily talented people who also fight not fight but like have a fight in them and i want to watch that as a leaf fan that's what that's the product i want you know you can back check and try to hook nikita kutra from behind
Starting point is 01:25:27 might break your jaw you could try you know willie strong as an ox if he had the slightest bit of mean the slightest but you know what like i used to say this about um freddie goche big for nothing right but like he's just such a happy guy like they need to you know you can hire someone outside of the salary cap to just follow him around and fuck his day up put lego in his shoes yeah yeah when he goes to chipotle you slap it out of his hand and yeah you just justin hall is another guy like that yeah just hire someone to smear mustard on willie's little sugo hats and just you know wreck his day get a bylaw officer to be like i'm giving you a ticket for walking your dog off leash adam no my bad my list of of
Starting point is 01:26:15 what my list you were going through your five guys and then we got to win so my list is i think i think uh well first off tana is a given he's going to be back but i want oliver eckman larson back i like jake mccabe he's i want matthews i want nice i want cowan i want grew uh the goalies seem fine you do have a decision to make though with hill to be now you're gonna carry three you're gonna do what the canes do that's the smart play because these two goalies are made of glass you got to carry three um but we know what's gonna happen you're gonna carry three and then somebody will perform and then somebody else gets traded no no one's gonna get hurt okay fair that's great man i like that yeah hildeby is gonna be locked away like freaking
Starting point is 01:26:56 josh levo remember like it's like the most insanely healthy leave team ever he's like all right i'll just sit here i guess i'll never play um my my point is this i think i would from the guys that are left because the entire roster isn't getting traded from the guys that are left those are the guys that i'd be like all right let's build around you like more of the roster than you did a month ago yeah because when they try they they actually look like good they just beat a pacific division winning should we be believing this well i don't believe the tough guy act because the tough guy act is a brand and a brand fun fact is a promise continually kept and the reason the florida panthers and the and the and the boston bruins and the tampa bay
Starting point is 01:27:37 lightning the colorado avalanche vegas when they were at their meanest um anaheim used to be a really mean team in the getz laugh years with perry um la used to be a really mean team uh in the you know dustin brown jeff carter era all you're doing is listing good teams yeah um like those guys that's how hockey's played those guys kept it up yeah and this Leafs team this is the first time in the Matthews era I've seen up and down the lineup people be tough yeah and I need that I don't need you to go out and and give everybody a knucky sandwich I need you to fight to care and that has been you know the Leafs were so talented and so much game-breaking talent especially when Marner was here that they could take nights off and win the game anyway and that
Starting point is 01:28:20 is what they got into that became their identity and when the playoffs hit they couldn't find the extra gear because it didn't exist they never developed it no the best teams are you know since the olympic break have been out there looking for a fight like people are out there going man i miss dubas i'm like guys i get it because based on what true living did sure but dubas never put a great team on the ice he put pretty good teams on the ice pretty good oh that was never that's not good enough never a team that was able to get over the hump never a team that was able to get past game five of the second round true living beat him shit shit shit and i hadn't thought of it that way it's true shit so so here's what i'm asking i want a team
Starting point is 01:29:02 identity that looks a little bit more like this you don't have to go and be the panthers but please fight back when the panthers are bullying you is that fair or that's why i said last night the leafs are soft until until further notice it's nice that you were like this one game you got to be this every game all the time can you stand up to the seattle kraken marchman's not there anymore they're shitting me right now so jess jesse my question to you is seeing what you saw same question do you see something here where you go well there might be something to build around i don't trust it if they are what they are post matthews gudas incident that'd be awesome they have had a different motor in this these last couple weeks that we've never seen but i'm on
Starting point is 01:29:49 the side of the morgan riley all of a sudden is standing up in every scrum and all that it's a little performative for right now and i don't know if it's gonna last so i'm not gonna waver on what this team has been from uh post that run in december through the olympic break oh and eight streak i think that's probably a lot closer to who they are than what they are right now which is oh my god they played a really tough game against the ducks and they fought for that victory that was awesome i don't i'm not buying it no no i i think they're closer to the team they were just before the olympic break which is you know you hadn't sold yet you weren't you didn't didn't really know you were selling yet like that just all the players were like what's the
Starting point is 01:30:38 freaking point they just any dog that they had in them immediately left um but that team also was not in the playoffs like there's a reason that they ended up selling if they were healthier if they had a different coach could they have made the playoffs uh maybe if they switched to the western conference at least you're tied with the preds holy shit hilarious anyway uh um and that's not good enough like i don't think the standard that this team is set in this era it's good enough to barely make the playoffs can i i ran by the way it's not that hard to be gm i ran it through gemini ai i said what would you do to fix the leafs gave me a five-part plan it said appoint a general manager with a build from within mandate so you know bring in somebody who's going
Starting point is 01:31:27 a build through the draft to clear salary cap space by moving veteran defenseman Carlo and Riley is what it noted oh shit number three prioritize a youth movement around Easton Cowan and Matthew nice and maybe stop burying Jake Quillen it actually says that rebuild the blue line with nasty
Starting point is 01:31:44 defensive targets Jake Truba Darren radish I think radish is staying in Tampa by the way are two very not a like name stabilize the net front by elevating hill to be transition to a tandem of wall and hill to be and move veteran goalie anthony stallers who i don't think you actually could met because that contract's pretty thing and then i said what would you do with matthews and they're like make sure he commits
Starting point is 01:32:04 to a retool or you got to move him and that is the question it is hanging around do i officially do a podcast with two boomers one guy who can't work one guy who can't work his television when there's a big thing that says change the channel and the other one who brings the ai topic well i just thought it's funny that it's so self-evident that even ai is like i can scrape the internet for this hey siri even i can steal this content i hope that screwed up you just came up on my phone hey google no text siri oh no hey siri text mom uh fun fart fart fart fart fart fart fart fun stat in the game uh william nylander with the assist on the tavara's goal officially is the highest scoring member of his own family uh he passed michael vast michael nylander who played
Starting point is 01:32:52 last night uh yeah yes that's what i was getting to next brian hayward on the ducks broadcast on victory plus kept calling him michael neilander because i think did brian not play in the nhl it sounds like a very familiar name yeah i don't know uh leo carlson that was according to pete blabber pete blackburn by the way who tweeted it out yeah someone else sent me a message they're like why does this highlight pack call him michael oh it's in the highlight pack and then they clip it out apparently the no it wasn't just pete talking about it apparently the highlight went viral awful like it's just uh it's ai slop um we can we can play the clip or i can just read it out to you hire people um leo carlson after the game one point is not enough in this game
Starting point is 01:33:29 we should beat this team by three every night you know what that's why i don't care about the tank today and i wanted them to win yes and be mad leo leo's right and the leafs would have been happy to lose on march 12th you shouldn't have been talking shit no no you shouldn't have been doing shit doing shit they at least would have been happy to lose march 12th and were well on their way it was three to one no that's like listen leo carlson's a great player he's going to be an even better player um it does not bode well for the ducks that in a spirited tilt um leading into the playoffs with less than 10 games
Starting point is 01:34:13 before the playoffs. They blew a three goal or three goal. They blew a 3-1 lead and lost. And after getting hammered by the Oilers this weekend too. It doesn't bode well
Starting point is 01:34:23 for them at all. I think every team in the Pacific is garbage doo-doo. Yeah. Here's Leo. Thanks, John. Leo, you could hear
Starting point is 01:34:30 the disappointment from your teammates as you all walked off the ice. But you get a point out of this game and the way you all stuck together
Starting point is 01:34:37 in this one. What does that say about your bond as a team? yeah i mean good bond i mean you know one point's not enough in this game i should you know beat this team by by three at least tonight so uh that's tough thanks john why couldn't he put his dip down before i know that he did this interview or is that snooze that duck sweater's got a zin patch or zin holder whatever he's got there's pockets um you know what i i love his very scandinavian honesty there like we should have beat them by three i'd say at least three there
Starting point is 01:35:11 leo but what's the question about the bonding though i i like that he moved it away from what are you bonding in a loss what you're the first place team in your division what do you mean and you're losing to the leafs bonding bonding hey man bonding isn't it fun to bond bonding when you lose to you know what a team that's i wonder if there's a victory plus mandate to try and spin everything positive well it is doing the homer yeah broadcast because that's that's a crazy thing i will say this the leafs did have bonded since the matthews incident but they won that game on march 12th and they won this game there has been bonding but it was in victory weird anyway uh last one this was from jay yeah it's sorry not dip lucy breakers oh that's what it was that's what
Starting point is 01:35:58 obviously yeah oh yeah no uh yeah insane stat this is from jay fresh troy terry is the first player in nhl history to play 50 games in a season without recording a single hit that's nuts it's because he always has the puck that's crazy to not throw a single one that's not you're able to be a capable player without doing that it doesn't feel right no it doesn't feel right it doesn't feel possible what was you didn't bump into someone on the way to the bench exactly somebody didn't just give you a hit on the stack card didn't lidstrom win a cup and during the playoff run he had one hit i don't know yeah but i don't know man you're a good player you ain't nicholas lidstrom that's that's odd it feels like you shouldn't want that either like go out and
Starting point is 01:36:49 throw a body check it's like when you throw a muffin on net so that your shot counter doesn't say zero just go out and check somebody so you don't have this weird stat also you gotta wonder if the stat keepers in these buildings are like i don't want to be the one to give them a hit that's funny yeah it's gotta be a thing like remember it was a thing for years where the islanders had like friggin 400 more hits than everyone else yes like okay i don't think they actually do i think they're just juicing the numbers at long island on long island beg your pardon i kind of wonder if that's the case for troy terry yeah they've really dialed in the shot counter this year because of all the betting implications that then now
Starting point is 01:37:32 you know when actual shots happen but back in the day if i can give guys shots all the time who cares yeah the islanders hits thing is a genuine thing that went on for decades yeah when they were playing their their hit counter would be triple the amount of all the other teams and the shots thing yeah you just sit there and give guys shots when we didn't really matter when we say not a league that was pretty recent like that happened during and for many years while this show existed that's still going on oh yeah there are there's a few players in this league where i'm like that's impossible i know we can't stay too long in this because we're running out of no no but like depth guys who are fantasy darlings oh yeah but dude will cooley uh yakov trennan has like
Starting point is 01:38:19 350 hits and keifer sherwood is completely op i love him uh penguins came out and had an insane game no malcolm no crosby and i think it was eight or nine unanswered against the islanders last night oh no stewart skinner said that if we'd had a player like anthony mantha on those um Oilers teams, we would have won in the Cup. And he was like, that's not a hit out at... That's so unnecessary! I think he meant it in the sense that, like, guys with... Like, he was just trying to pump his teammates' tires. Mantha had a great game.
Starting point is 01:38:51 That's a crazy thing to say. He is finally the player who is two years away from being two years away arriving. Yeah! True! We've been waiting for Anthony Mantha for years, and we made peace with the fact that he was never coming. And here he is. What a player.
Starting point is 01:39:08 Crosby played, by the way. Oh, he did play? Oh, okay, never mind. Because I know he's getting closer to the point-of-game streak, and I know he tacked on two more during the game to keep his point-of-game streak alive. He's got to make it happen. Yeah, he's going to. I think he needs four points in eight games.

Now, Jesse, there was an article posted in The Athletic by Josh Yohi about the Penguins officiating. And you wanted to sort of highlight this.
Starting point is 01:40:45 The Penguins aren't officiating games, by the way. But this has been an ongoing saga. You guys might have remembered us talking about this a couple of shows ago where Kyle Dubas, Sassy Dubas, printed out the rules for goaltender interference and left them in the press box for all the press to say, hey. And it was it doesn't even matter what kind of a goal it was regarding. This has happened to every team in the league. Nobody knows what the frigging rules are, but there is more to this, Jess. So Josh outlined five reasons why the Penguins might be getting screwed on calls. I love a list of calls.
Starting point is 01:41:18 They have genuinely been on the wrong side of many calls here. So I'm going to give you the five reasons and maybe a little bit of the blurb on the five reasons. And then I want you guys to react to it. All right. Number one being, Adam, you've hit this a lot. The Penguins have no owner. fenway sports group is selling the penguins to the hoffman family family but the deal isn't done yet as one of the penguins employees said to me over the weekend it's not like fenway is around or
Starting point is 01:41:43 vocal in the first place no and certainly not now that's is that could that be a reason absolutely it's not an insane theory no that's that's actually probably the best theory that was number one that's number one reason that is uh that is a great theory if you don't have anybody advocating for you yeah nobody especially in the nhl is going to advocate for you okay number two the penguins don't have a ceo the penguins have no one with that power these days lemieux rarely spoke with the league about its officiating and for a reason he has a contentious relationship with the league as a player and to that point he stated the league's poor officiating as a primary reason for his first retirement in 97 at the age of 31 that's interesting
Starting point is 01:42:27 so again there's no leadership whining at that low you have kyle dubas and uh that's the number three point the penguins most powerful person right now is kyle dubas when uh so he mentioned on the previous point when mario and ron burkle own the penguins their ceo david morehouse was always the first to contact the league when there was an issue so they don't have that role and in that role is Kyle Dubas who a lot of people in the league don't like look at as like a guy like Doug Armstrong one of them yeah so I think he's a whiner there is a two or three I will I will tell Penguins fans like we paid that tax for a long time if Kyle Dubas is your general manager people love to take shots at Kyle I don't know why but it is it's true they can they know they
Starting point is 01:43:14 can take liberties number four is Dan Mews is a first year head coach yes valid valid I think unfortunately valid i think when you're when you look at this and you compile all the reasons that josh is given you kind of see how it kind of all trickled down to the penguins getting a little bullied by the rest of the league by by the league itself was it adam fantilli the rookie thing is so crazy and i think it applies to coaches i think it was adam fantilli could be wrong a penalty was called because like he got hooked and he said to the ref oh no actually i didn't yeah get hooked and the refs like go to the box yeah they gave him a penalty they're like no you're correcting us it was ridiculous that's so weird yeah what weird behavior like instead of yelling and screaming
Starting point is 01:44:02 about it and oh the refs and this it's not a league let's calm down for a second and be adult what weird behavior that is just as like a person that is strange behavior and concerning from an alleged professional i think it's um i think it's protection it it becomes less about logic because we're looking at it from the outside going logical it's more about protection of territory right that's what it is this is my house yeah this is my house like i control things here on this ice yeah point you know it is a strange behavior to think so yeah because you you should theoretically theoretically want is what's best for the game yes but that's not what people want what's best for them no i've signed sticks now and yours isn't worth any talk to my kids after
Starting point is 01:44:50 the game yeah the first four reasons i think are very valid and it kind of paints a picture it paints a very good picture about what's going on with penguins and why the nhl is kind of bullying them and it's wrong number five is just that the penguins have a history of feuding with nhl referees uh more than most teams i don't know how much this applies well with crosby and Malkin he certainly used to yeah that that's a that's a point in there Crosby still carries a reputation for being a whiner with referees because he argued with them as a teenager so I don't know that that's I don't know that I've heard that I I thought my personal opinion and again I haven't talked to many referees lately I'm sure they wouldn't be thrilled to talk to me
Starting point is 01:45:29 um was that he'd kind of grown up past that and that the refs recognize that and if the refs haven't recognized that one of the greatest like mount rushmore player and you're still not giving him respect then respectfully do something else no i i don't i i don't think it's that anymore yeah not in 2026 but the other reasons yeah we're absolutely valid i think the dan muse one is not what i had thought of it's something to keep an eye on if this kind of stuff continues and what if it'll change once the hoffman family gets in there and they actually start talking to gary batman which fenway sports group never did nope now uh a couple of things to get through before we get to the end of this show uh first off macklin salabrini is the sixth teenager ever
Starting point is 01:46:11 to get 100 points man he is the first carrie price teammate ever to get 100 points best hilarious stat of the night that's from san jose sharks that's uh hey that's that's her name that is great tweet of the night tweet of the night weed of the night fantastic stuff john tortorella coached his first game with the golden knights and vancouver did score first and it's his old team like i said but they did come back and they did win and he he was actually very gracious about bruce cassidy in his press conference he said he acknowledged this is a weird situation he's like i talked to bruce last night he's a pretty damn good coach it's a weird situation i'm not going to come in and make any big changes uh but you know vegas won and it's a game that they should
Starting point is 01:46:51 win he'd be foolish to try to make big changes um at this point no he's there to be a motivator Get him across the line. He seemed to be enjoying himself. John Tortorella is so funny. He always comes in like a lamb and then he's out like a lion. He always comes in as charming, John. And this is the there's a very endearing part of John Tortorella's personality that you're like, I get why people would. There are certain players like I would die for that coach.
Starting point is 01:47:14 I get it. I mean, look at his reputation and look at like Babcock's. Like you think torts is the only hardo in hockey coaching. You know what I mean? but he obviously goes about it in a way where players like him uh our good friend rick dolly wall uh from donnie and dolly in vancouver just staying on the canucks for a second is saying that zeve bulliam could get an 80 million dollar extension uh or something close to that that is what young players cost for 20 years like well i i or it could be it could be eight nine ten
Starting point is 01:47:47 million somewhere in there you know what yeah i mean that's the that's the crazy thing is that It's a how many games does he play 67 and Jake Sanderson hadn't played more than that amount when he signed his extension, maybe a little bit more. Now, Jake Sanderson was more of a lock than Zeev Booyam currently is pretty good. Yeah, but Jake was damn good. Like, yeah, right.
Starting point is 01:48:12 Well, Jake was a I mean, I guess we're splitting hairs, but like there is a difference between the fifth overall pick in the 12th. Sanderson was the fifth. Booyam's the 12th. He looks he looks like the real deal, but like there's no way around it. Like signing a 20 year old who's played 67 games is that kind of money is an enormous risk. Rick said, if it's an eight year deal, I can see it being nine plus.
Starting point is 01:48:36 So that's probably. Oh, yeah, that's what he said. There's no way I would give him more than Jackson Lacombe, who's nine. Hmm. Well, I guess you could say, well, the salary cap's going up, though. So if and if you want, if you if you're Vancouver and you want them on a long term deal, which you do, because eventually that deal will will play out like the Hughes one did, which is means, you know, you're underpaying the defenseman, hopefully for what they're good at, which is what happened with Quinn Hughes when he signed his longer extension. That's what you're going to have to get to. Do you guys know how much the best player in the NHL makes?
Starting point is 01:49:10 Connor McDavid? 12.5. 8.85 million dollars per season. That's what Lane Hudson makes. Oh, get out of here. And there's no way that Steve Williams should make more than Lane Hudson. Lane Hudson, maybe Lane Hudson needs to negotiate harder. Why did he sign that?
Starting point is 01:49:28 I don't know why he signed that. I still, the day he signed it, we were all like, what are you doing? Yeah. All right. Well, okay. It's a steep discount for the best player in the NHL, and everybody should come in below that. It should be a cap for league salaries.
Starting point is 01:49:42 would you rather have two lane hudson's and cap space or kirill caprizov i want one lane hudson you can have the other one back because one's enough jesse way to stick the landing yes that was good raise my rent so i can hustle harder i've never seen that sweet that's an all-time sweet again creating shareholder value um zeev booyam yeah might be as much as 80 million dollars interesting the last thing we want to talk about here was trevor banks uh trevor is a daily hive reporter and a credentialed vancouver canucks reporter for daily hive and was escorted out of a game um after a first period and it had to do he said i've got to apologize to the fans of locked on Canucks, which is a show he hosts and has hosted since 2019. Because last night, I got my
Starting point is 01:50:39 press pass taken away. And I don't know. I don't know if I'm getting it back. We'll see how it goes. He said, I wrote a story about the Aquilini family, a case they were involved with. Patrick Johnston, who has also written something similar, if you want to check it out in the province, he didn't like it. So in the first intermission, I was removed from the rink and asked to give my press pass back we redacted the article at daily hive so we'll see where it goes but that was an interesting experience last night last night to you know mid-game be ushered out of the building i talked to a few guys i think it might be the first time or he said i think i might be the only reporter who's been kicked out mid-game uh but you know what that's part of life man it happens
Starting point is 01:51:20 and it happens in the world of journalism the canucks playing barbara streisand's greatest hits because this is the streisand effect who read that article and really how many people read that article and it has to do with a story with the aquilini family vineyard in washington state and when everyone found out that detail we said what about the aquiline family story that they had to pull um basically what is what are they trying to hide the aquilini this is all alleged i don't want my press pass provoked uh the ties to a now indicted u.s labor contractor accused of exploiting migrant workers though the vineyard itself made no face no charges and the story has been pulled the canucks called the statement in i don't know why the canucks had to make the
Starting point is 01:52:11 statement like couldn't the aquilini family just make the statements it's not a canuck story it's an aquilini story um well but the canucks had to revoke the past though yeah but still technically like don't it's that's an aquilini family business yeah yeah i get that the canucks did that but the aquilini should be the ones making this but they're making the canucks brand take the brunt for this i mean they made a mistake canuck statement calls the piece inaccurate misleading and defamatory criticizing its sensational framing uh of francesco aquilini they say it violated journalistic standards justifying a rare revocation uh to ensure accurate and responsible coverage so listen um even i have no insight on this i know whose side i'm going to side with
Starting point is 01:52:58 and it's not the billionaire right so here's the thing uh in order to have a like a full-throated take on this i would have had to read the article and like were there inaccuracies in it because he wasn't the only person to write about it pactor john johnson also wrote about it i don't know i don't know if there are inaccuracies in the article i do know that if there were if everything the canucks and aquilini said there were true it was false and it was defamatory that's still not the way to handle it at all exactly and the reason you did that is because this is a smaller digital outlet that you thought you could push around that's why you and it worked because because daily hive has pulled it now it didn't work though because now everyone else is talking
Starting point is 01:53:44 when we talk talk about this no no because no if if this is not the scope of our show if aquilini or if aquilini sent someone from the canucks to give trevor begs shit behind the scenes and talk about it and go through the proper channels they still could have got the thing pulled and we probably don't know about it and definitely don't talk a hundred percent right the the pulling of his credential mid-game is what made this a big deal they could have had their private conversation and i'm sure they could have got it taken down through some other channels but that's that's a wrong thing to do and and who's got the most to lose in this story i mean francesco yeah no and he has a history of shady shit like that's that's not that you can go google it i i encourage you
Starting point is 01:54:36 to go do that yep yep it's a it's it's stuff that you kind of go well that that tracks if i was a canucks fan i would be advocating for him to sell the team i think they have don't worry they are and i hope you keep doing it yeah like no disrespect to trevor bags i did not know that person and now i know that person and i'm very i'm interested to follow along with this story yeah me too it's censorship like i think he's gonna get his press pass back i do especially because this story is a non-hockey story at the end of the day the guy covers the canucks like i i think if you're aquilini and you don't want to give him his press pass back you should probably just hold your nose and do it um i wonder you know i was wondering these
Starting point is 01:55:22 scenarios guys what what's um what's gary betman probably has to put in a phone call right this is probably one of those days where gary goes ah it's aquilini day well didn't this is why i don't have something to say about it he he's one of the heads of the pro hockey oh yeah they they express concern i mean absolutely and i i think listen i hate the job gary betman does but at the end of the day his job is to manage 32 groups of insanely rich people who have never been told no that's a tough gig in recent decades and i think there are certain owners when they come across his screen he goes and there's no way aquilini is not one of them yep no this is an enormous self-owned nope like this is an enormous unforced error we never would have heard about any of this
Starting point is 01:56:17 this would have been tiny this would have been contained and he made a meal out of it attaboy there frank well we know at least if you're in canucks media you kind of know they're paying attention they're watching and we have our criticisms of the leafs they've never done that they've never done anything like that like i've never seen that and i think oh there are times we say stuff on the show it's like nothing yeah okay yeah i i you know good on them it's a it's a part of the gig you want to own a team and be a billionaire that makes you public facing yes you're gonna be investigated and criticized yeah the you you took it to 10 immediately that's not yeah not how this works so how this works so we will be following
Starting point is 01:57:00 and uh with that unless you guys have anything else you'd like to get to uh yeah calgary yeah you're getting to calgary that's right and the press conference for keith pelly starts in about 45 minutes as of this recording that's right so that'll be interesting and watch that and then I'm going to skedaddle. Do not forget that Steve Dangle podcast will return on Friday. Jesse?
Starting point is 01:57:19 Don't forget, biggest game of the year happens tonight. Lightning Canadian. Oh, man. Seven o'clock. RDS. Will underpaid Lane Hudson
