the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
we're already game in to the stanley cup finals and nobody cares it's the weird
nobody cares nobody oh no don't tell me don't tell me you care more about the stanley cup
finals than you do alex petrangelo and what's going on there don't tell me that the stanley
cup finals are more interesting there is they're not they're not there is an arena filled with 20
000 people in dallas in the middle of a pandemic of people who care don't tell me people who don't
care what is that so are we doing this are we doing this let's please explain to people that
you might be saying well wait a second they're playing in edmonton that doesn't make any sense
steven will you fill us in uh for crying out loud okay sometimes i'll see something and i'm like
i have a thing to say i have something to say but for the sake of my mental health i go you know
what i'm not gonna say it you should i don't feel like even retweeting it don't save it for the show
tweet it no tweet first yeah there you go i will tweet this first so uh jeff k who is the uh pa
announcer for the uh dallas stars we follow each other and i just see this tweeted into my
timelines uh three goal horn whatever dallas stars goal jfk blah blah blah it's a stadium
packed full of people in dallas watching the game
listen a bunch of them are spaced out a bunch of them aren't a bunch of people are wearing masks
i'm sure some aren't
why have the dallas stars been isolated in a bubble for over two months if you're gonna do this
oh for never stop never stop we've got the mayor in toronto saying we could still be in a pandemic
situation this time next year which he's he's right about it could be could be um because
there's a province-wide scolding because our cases went to 400 yeah for 13 million people
so i i feel like in the states it's just going to be like yeah we're sort of tired of being
worried about this so we're gonna move on now i think that's what's gonna happen like it's just
we're just this isn't convenient for us so we're just gonna do our thing and and move on yeah i
don't know i kind of want stale nachos in a in a fucking stadium that hasn't been used since
like i was like do i retweet it no i'm not gonna retweet it do i talk about it in the video no i'm
not no no and then you guys bring it up first thing what has the point of the bubble been
if they're gonna stuff an nhl arena full of people to watch a game so can i give you the
details on their watch parties please do for it so uh the dallas they've been going on for a little
bit now i think they started in the western conference finals okay uh game two specifically
uh the golden knights so they have a master mandatory which is good yeah good and the
seating is grouped into pods so every other uh row of seats is blocked off so you can have a
little section for your group and then another there's a blocked off section and then there's
another little section for your group so the people high-fiving and stuff that was making
me hyperventilate but they're probably already in a you're in your bubble so you get you get a
bubble for your section the other two beside you are blocked off and then there's another bubble
over on that side and then yeah they've been doing it for every single game since uh the western
conference finals so it's interesting that the nhl isn't publicizing this you'd think it would
show up on the nhl account you think you think that some of the broadcasters might talk about it
what why why are you beaming in why are you beaming in uh friggin oh yeah let's show some
dallas stars fans celebrating from home from home their arena's got thousands of people in it well
that's the reason that's what i'm saying is that there's a reason the broadcasters have stayed away
from that yeah and the arena seats 18 500 but the uh cap on the watch party is 20 of that
so it's not that many people it's probably just lower bowl about 30 3600 well you know you know
what's actually going to happen here right no so so here's the problem guys everything's going to
end and we're going to be fine small market revenue teams cannot justify going hitting the
ice next season uh on tv revenue alone we know that they're already losing money so tv revenue
is not going to pay for small market teams to take the ice without some sort of gate
and the owners are going to say that.
So the option will be play with a half or partial full arena,
20% or 30%, or don't play at all.
That will be the option, and I guarantee you,
they're going to take the first option.
This is a good little test run for those markets.
And I bet that's exactly what they're doing.
And conceptually speaking, put all the problem stuff aside if you can.
If you can go to a restaurant and the max capacity of a restaurant
50 people you can see how maybe you could fit that many people into an enormous stadium yeah in in
the right circumstances i can see that you know you can get hysterical with me in the comments
or in twitter but when you actually extrapolate the square footage and you do like a if you were
to have like a ratio a safe ratio i don't even know what that would be and you followed all the
protocols i could see how that could work and it would actually be nice because it would be nice
to see some vans in the stands at all um however the other side of that is the risk that you incur
with that not just to the players or the families whatever it's just anybody that walks in those
stadiums and there's going to be people that flat out don't want to go and then there's going to be
people who are like you know what i'll have a look at safety protocols if they work for me i'll go
and the thing is we saw my mom even texted me this link my mom now likes to prep for this show as
well uh she sends me hockey for our show yeah she likes she's like you know just in case you can see
this uh it'll be like super big this stand like a final started yeah i don't know but you might
want to talk about it they should present it we went to a game yeah yeah yeah um she's uh so she
sent me a link that i it was the first time she sent me a link and i actually had missed it
and you know initially we thought or what the nhl said it was going to be uh december before we saw
hockey again after this season uh now gary betman's saying could be january and they're on record of
saying that don't be surprised if it's a couple months later than that like don't be surprised
and the other thing is as soon as you remember this too like if we're talking about vaccines
and that sort of thing not only do you need um a vaccine to exist you then need to produce it for
two billion people and or somewhere in that neighborhood right you need so and then they
have to be refrigerated and so if you're refrigerated like the the thing is with the
vaccines like if if it's produced in europe you have to fly it over there's a myriad of logistical
issues crazy issues with this it could be a while it could be a while so in the meantime it's not
it's not wrong to say well what can we do now to sit back and do nothing is not it's just not in
human nature now it's going to make people uncomfortable they're not going to like it
there's going to be a lot of people that do not like this and that's fair i totally see that side
but these are people that are like money money money and it's about the money so they're going
to find a way to get butts in seats again they are like we can we can point our fingers and
you know wag and shake our heads at texas and the states and whatever the mood in ontario like
they're in they're they're doing these super condescending press conferences
yep and oh gosh young people and your parties you cannot gather unless people are making money
like seriously public gatherings they put all these restrictions on them and people are smart
enough to be like but kids are at school but i'm allowed to go to the bar or i'm allowed to go in a
pub the strip club is open you can get a freaking lab dance and every day there's oh the bread the
500 customers who have been to the brass rail over there and i'm like who is there are hundreds
of people going to brass rail right now but the government's yelling at kids at western being like
you can't 10 of you can't get together at western you know but they're allowing all these other
things my sister's care facility opened like two weeks ago brass rail's been open for a couple of
months the fuck that's that is insane priorities and i'm sorry that i just sucked the humor out of
the bit but that's revolting but now we're we're in a we're in a we're in this fucked up stage
where people are like genuinely what's the point what's the sure let's let's try let's let's try
to fit nearly 4 000 people in a stadium in texas and see if it works that's the thing let's try
i don't know let's fucking try you've been guessing the whole time anyway you had the same viewpoint
when they were going to go into the bubble you said this you were this negative about the bubble
and how many positive tests have they had zero none exactly both leagues in both leagues and
And the NFL, which is even flying around too, zero positives.
Yep.
So, you know, the thing is initially the reaction from people like us
is going to be negative, but I do think the smart thing to do,
the thing that you do in these situations is you innovate.
I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to be innovative
as long as it's safe.
How are they innovating?
By the way, social distancing and wearing a mask.
Yeah, it's not hard to wear.
But the mask thing fucking works.
Yeah, I don't know.
There's so much.
That's what I'm saying.
There was a thing out of the CDC.
No, we know you don't believe in masks.
There was a thing out of the CDC this week where it was like, okay,
if this percentage of people, everyone wore a mask,
if it was universal mask wearing all the time under the exact guidelines,
it would be more effective than a vaccine because of the intake of a vaccine
and how it normally works within a population.
if literally everyone followed the master t it would be more effective what percent of people
are going to get the vaccine come on now like you know what and at that point it's sort of like i
can't really there's nothing we can do to help you yeah this is we've tried there's nothing we can do
to help you i'm gonna get the vaccine i'm gonna wear a mask um and if there was a if there was a
way for me to see the leafs at scotia bank arena that was verified safe i'd go i would go 100 i
would go if it was verified safe if I can go shopping for clothes in a small store I can
absolutely go to an arena and be socially distanced it just has to be safe Sarah Sivian said something
a couple months ago because people were scolding a few NHLers I think it was only a few weeks before
the bubble you know how can you expect them to take this more seriously than leadership is
yeah like if bars are open if bars are open why shouldn't they go and you can come up with your
answers and mine is uh you're about to enter a bubble and a shitload of money is at stake
and your team's health is at stake but i mean if they're open fuck it that's that's that's where
we are i love i love when people make statements like that that they're so like you it's inarguable
and it's the most plain and simple like how if if the leadership is not going to take this
seriously how can you expect other people to it's true it's true like the nightclubs are open why
are you yelling at jake for tannin for going to a thing that's open yeah yeah they shouldn't they
shouldn't be yeah you're right they shouldn't well they are so i don't know like what do you
want what like holy shit i would love to compare this podcast to like our first pandemic one where
like i'm so i'm just well there's a moment every day there's a moment in march where the world
thought half the population of the world might get wiped out yeah know what coronavirus was and
how it would how it would react to the human body you know i remember our last show in studio i was
like we shouldn't be here oh we didn't know we just didn't know nobody knew we didn't know and
And I think going forward, you know, it's fair to expect that people are going to try to do things to get back to not necessarily where we were, but some semblance of that.
We're going to try to try.
Which is what, yeah.
We're going to try to try.
And if you have a problem with that, don't participate.
But the reality is people are going to try because that's the way we work.
That's our psychology.
That's what humans do.
and so i think it'll be i mean listen i think that watch party footage is a little a little crazy
but if if i gotta wear if i gotta put on gloves and wear a mask the whole time i'd still love to
go see the leafs i would and i'll just say that and i know that sounds irresponsible whatever
if it's safe if i can go into the gap and buy a t-shirt with just a mask on i'm sure that i can
go to the stadium and be clean the thing is just getting people to follow the rules you know which
But you could in that space.
In Scotiabank Arena, it's probably going to be cleaner than it is anywhere else.
It's probably safer than taking the GO train or taking the subway, right?
It'd be much cleaner.
They'd have a lot more at stake.
So anyway, the thing is with that, and the original reason I brought up this point was that there are going to be smaller market teams, especially in the United States because Canada will not be an issue.
But the United States is going to be an issue where it's – what do they say on first take?
It's, you know, uh, there are 20,000 hockey fans in every city and they're all at the
game, right?
It's, it's literally that's gate driven league, gate driven league.
You need to have some butts in seats for this financially to make sense to a lot of owners.
And, uh, we're not going to get an NHL back until that happens.
And so the complicated issue with that is, um, with the, um, with the 14 day quarantine
rules, uh, between Canada and the United States to come into Canada, teams are going to have
to take like you could imagine there'd be like a double
bye week right they come into
Canada they do their Canadian road trip but they're sitting here
for two weeks you know what I mean
or all the Canadian teams play in the States
it's gonna be or maybe they just get
an exception maybe you call
up Trudeau see what happens
yeah well if you're a billionaire apparently that works
yeah apparently it does work a lot
of people were upset because I
think Steph Curry was here for TIFF
and he was at like Drake's house and
stuff yeah and then nobody
really knew if he had to quarantine because
he was just back with uh back with his family like a week later what happened that two weeks
you pick it you take a private jet in right you you pj it in so to to confirm where i'm at with
all this i see footage like that and it makes me extraordinarily uncomfortable sure but at the end
of the day i'm like you might as well try like i'm at the screw it stage i shouldn't be at the
screw it stage dr jim would get who we had on the podcast would probably say actually you should
never say screw it uh i agree but um people are people are gonna do what they're gonna do
i thought like if they're high-fiving and stuff and not wearing masks no but if you're wearing
a mask and you're socially distanced and you're not sitting near anyone i don't see a problem
yeah and it's and it's like your your mom and dad and brother sister or whatever like what those
pods appear to be it's whenever i saw someone reach out over a couple seats i'm like do you
know that person you better know them do you live with them i i just but it's uh i think jesse said
it like it it comes back to trust and would i trust any building full of 4 000 people of any
denomination absolutely not what percent of people that you know are stupid put that on the scale
of 4 000 people now let me ask you this steve but no one's forcing me to go you went to a restaurant
Have you been to a restaurant?
Not inside, no.
I've been to a few patios.
And that season is quickly evaporating.
It's fucking outside.
It doesn't make a difference.
If it's on a surface, what does it matter?
It extraordinarily makes a difference.
It does make it.
With the air circulation, being outside and being inside are different.
What do you mean?
I'm sure.
Weren't all of us there for the gym podcast?
I thought we were.
i have orange bubbly too adam you don't impress me i think the point i'm trying to make is that
is that i i see this with people where they're like like where they're a little bit like uh well
they'll post a bunch of memes shaming people covid shaming people and then i'll see them at
a restaurant and i'm like okay so you're not that you're not and frankly if this is you and i'm
calling you out i'm fucking calling you out uh consider yourself seen all right don't you
covid shape me and then go to a restaurant knock that shit off if you you want to play the jesus
game if you want to be holier than thou then be holy but you can't be both all right i am fully
willing to admit that i will go to a restaurant and that i would like to see the leafs if it's
safe and that i think it's possible and people are going to have a problem with that and i really
don't care but please do not send out a bunch of memes going the pandemic isn't over just because
you want it to be over because you're right but you can't do that and then go i'm going to the
i'm going to a bar it sounds like adam is talking to someone directly oh there's there's some people
he's talking to someone directly dot com slash r slash oddly specific this is oddly specific
to a very very person in this drink my orange bubbly even though they don't sponsor us but
but I'm drinking it on the podcast anyway.
And just so we're clear on that,
there was no sponsorship there.
So it's a very specific person in your life, Adam.
So I had to go somewhere that required a mask
and I wore one and I quickly left.
Then I had to go to the grocery store
and I walk into the grocery store
and I'm looking at my list on my phone
of the things I need to go.
Oh yeah, I got an orange bubbly.
That's on the list.
I got to go get that.
And I look up and there's an employee
of the grocery store who's just staring at me now i don't know if you guys know this i'm an author
i'm a bit of a big deal on youtube you're not you're not just an author you're a best-selling
author oh best-selling author to say it with your chest adam i i am not a stranger to having
strangers just stare at me and marvel in my presence but then i realize something i'm not
used to he looks very upset he looks very mad at me and that's when i go what is this guy's
i had taken off my mask because i went somewhere got in the car took it off and i forgot it it's
the only time i've ever forgot it i was in the grocery store for like 30 seconds and i literally
go like this i go i'm so sorry he goes it's okay i'll get your mask okay great so i stood there
like this until he got me a mask and i put it on apologize profusely to the guy i'm so sorry i'm so
sorry i'm so sorry he he was he looked really mad at first his shoulders kind of came down when he
saw how apologetic i was because he was ready for i know my rights fight he was ready for one of
those a few minutes later there's something on my list i go i i don't know the exact one that i
should be getting well i don't know the exact one my wife wants so i facetimer and i see myself
in the phone when i facetimer and i realize i am wearing my conquer covet 19 hat
so i walked in the store with no mask with my conquer covet 19 hat and that employee must have
thought i was the biggest dickhead in the world and for about 30 seconds he was absolutely right
i was gonna say was he wrong no no absolutely not but i walked over to him and i and then i
said all he said was in the hat and he just burst out laughing because it was obviously the first
thing he noticed after he saw that i was walking around the store with no freaking mask wow i was
mortified and i i have not forgotten since no anti-masking dick huge dick is your flat too
uh and the dinosaurs are fake is antifa taking away your rights
oh yes absolutely and also voting by mail is for cucks
oh man i thought it was for simps but if now if we downgrade it at the cox level i'm we're in
trouble now steve's gonna start attacking canada post oh i can't wait it's gonna shut them down
yeah we're gonna take over the federal express it's just south park the world is just so
literally yeah hey apparently south park's got a uh one hour special on covid yeah on wednesday
oh i'm so yo i've blocked wednesday on my calendar how do they lampoon reality i don't know i don't
know how you make it worse than it is right now i i've it's one of the most surreal things i've
ever seen is in 2016 when south park had to tap out like they almost did you know that the episode
for after trump got elected one of the ideas that they genuinely pitched was let's just leave the
screen black for 22 minutes to admit that we screwed up because they had a whole plot he's
gonna win yeah they had a whole plot and they just had to it's it it completely torpedoed an
entire season of a television show because they're like we can't lampoon this anymore this is insane
yep yeah and it's bad like it changed the structure they changed the entire structure
of the show like a year later because they're like we can't do this anymore this sucks
yep anyway uh yeah stars look pretty good we'll get to the stanley cup final
the not that interesting stanley cup final sorry stars and lightning fans
uh after thoughts after we get our celly of the week brought to you by kellogg's frosted flakes
let's hear from tony what's up with tony what is up with tony what is up with tony what's up
with tony where are you tony tony are you getting here what's up with mr baloney time don't flake
on the frosted that's right i still can't get over the 500 foot tiger skating towards you
he's only seven foot 300 pounds okay now that's a reason for a cereal celly he's right he's right
you got it you big beautiful tiger i'm assuming it's got to go your your celebration has got to
go to one of the two teams that made the stanley cup final this week well adam you'd be no yeah
you're right so who is it you know i was thinking about it there's you know i could go with the
local angle uh anthony sorelli sending the tampa bay lightning all the way to the stanley cup final
with his series winning goal and that guy loves scoring big goals he scored the memorial cup
winning goal in overtime for the oshawa generals in 2015 he's not my celly i just wanted to give
him a little shout out on that so underrated as the best story during last night's game because
it happened far too early in the game uh joel hanley with his first ever not just stanley cup
playoff goal first ever nhl goal of any type at the age of 29 game one of the stanley cup final
and just the look of the look of shock on his face and i love rupe hints like a young player
in this league looking at this guy who's like half a decade older than i'm like fatherly like
hey like welcome to the show kid you did that you did that it was because of me it was a slick pass
but you did that so to me the stars have had a lot of that by the way dude uh jake dowling
scored his first nhl goal at 29 and that was against the leafs i believe this season
of course has to be joel kiviranta another um undrafted guy is now at five goals including
at least one overtime winner and now uh joel hanley another guy scoring his first goal
first nhl goal at 29 that's unbelievable that's so free agency we got all excited
and maybe this will tie into a few conversations that we're gonna have later oh i think it will
can't wait to get this guy give him nine million eight million seven million every single year the
stanley cup final comes around and some guy who you've never heard of scores and the stars are
full of them they're full of them how many of you knew joel hanley i saw a habs fan yesterday on
twitter go he played for the habs he didn't know no he's played for two different nhl teams i saw
someone go oh of course he played for the coyotes they didn't know they didn't even know that's how
inconsequential this guy was scores a goal in game one of the stanley cup final joel hamley
formerly of the york simcoe express and former teammate of my nhl chat room co-host uh alish
forfar hey by the way that show looks really good you guys uh you guys are pretty good together
thanks dad yeah it's good it was like you do a pretty good job i think you do i was it was uh
it was fun to watch it was great uh and i actually watched it frosted flakes i did watch well tony
watched it too yeah you did great story pony the 300 pound tiger and i uh as i told him to keep his
head up because i don't want to be a hit you know uh we had we crushed a bowl of frosted flakes
together watched you guys and it's like really impressed with both of you so steve's great i know
i mean it's no ice surfing no don't compare anything to ice surfing don't you dare
oh you guys got pucks yeah we got pucks what do you mean you guys got pucks
we're owned by this little organization called rogers don't know if you ever heard of them what
is the hashtag hashtag ice surfing no streaming live on twitter okay on twitter it's the twitter
logo you see because by the way they use the ice surfing studios uh for the raptors coverage
and they took all my crap off the shelves so now i'm wondering like what box in what room
is all my crap in i want my kujo mask back damn it i haven't been to that building since march
i have a question what
all the stuff that happened this week broke directly after our show on wednesday
the art stall trade the manny mahultra thing um like we'll get to all that it didn't feel like
it because i got to do a show literally an hour later right so we yeah so it was like we're like
we're a little thin on on news today and then of course as soon as the show ends we're we're right
into it um is that just gonna be our lot in life is that how like i know we joke about that but
it's just is that just gonna be how things go because like it it started with vanik back in
the day and i i i was like really i this time it really affected me man it affected me down adam
i was down it was juicy juicy stuff to talk about it was like three trades within 24 hours
that was crazy crazy and good ones too like ones lots lots to break down joel edmondson there was
a lot of meat on that bone yes and we'll get to that um yeah but first i think we do need to talk
about i mean with the final timer like that was uh anyway uh with the stanley cup final
i mean it's anton hudoman isn't he the story he absolutely is i'm gonna do a standalone video on
him um because he's a great example of you know so often you hear oh this this player just needs
their shot and you say that for a few years and after a while you just come to the realization
no they're actually just not very good um that was kind of us with alex galchenyuk for a little bit
he had the one really good season and we're like just you wait he just needs a shot and it turns
out nope just sort of not as good as we thought he was anton hudoman if you go look at his career
he's had like one bad season ever but he was drafted by the minnesota wild who remember
nicholas backstrom the goalie yes one of the more underrated goalies in the league for many many
years they had josh harding as their uh backup who was supposed to be he was a second round pick
next big thing for many many years insane numbers and if i remember correctly he had to retire early
because of i want to say ms oh yes i think i do remember that oh that was tragic yeah absolutely
and then so harding is out of the situation it looks like hudobin's gonna get his shot
the wild get jose teodor so hudobin okay well nothing's gonna work here so he goes to a
different organization he goes to the boston bruins where he's trapped behind tukarask and
tim thomas forever and ever amen so he finally gets his shot as a backup in the lockout shortened
season behind tukarask so he barely plays i think he goes to the hurricanes that's where he got his
first actual shot because cam ward i think went down with injury and he did very well so the next
season the hurricanes go you know what we're going to give you a full-time spot and he kind of faltered
he wasn't very good and when cam ward was in the lineup he was better
unfortunate so then he goes to the ducks well he's going to be the backup for the ducks
no because the ducks have frederick anderson and john gibson so he's got no uh space on the ducks
where does he go he goes back to boston and he's too harassed backup and he's in his 30s at this
point then he finally goes to dallas and he's got this great situation because ben bishop is one of
better goalies in the league but we know he can't play 50 60 games like frederick anderson like
carrie price because he's very prone to injury so you look at this 34 year old's career and you
look at his numbers and he's got a grand total of one off season it shouldn't surprise anyone that
he's this good he's a fantastic story i'm sorry if that took too long no it didn't it was it was
By this context.
I want to do a deeper dive, but he's 34 years old, this guy,
and he's in the limelight for, I don't know, first time ever?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Shouldn't shock us at all.
Greg Wyshynski had this crazy stat.
Anton Hudobin is like, he's got like a 964 save percentage
in the third period since the beginning of the third round.
Something stupid like that?
he's unbelievable this but coming out of game one is anybody does anybody think dallas is going to
take the series you guys uh yeah i do tampa yeah i do yeah because i i come at the first period
tampa looked really slow and awful yep it didn't really show up yeah and then uh that goal it
definitely should have been like on the the first goal where um point gets hit in the corner by
kiviranta i guess probably should have been boarding yep the gojin comes in he goes to try
and rough up uh um kiviranta instead of playing the point jesse he does this yeah but he goes
adam if you're gonna abandon the play you better throw your gloves like confetti and start beating
the crap out of the guy right instead of playing he's gonna whistle right instead of playing the
puck he goes to the corner to try and like pat pause with the freaking kiviranta and then it
he's right to a goal and then the the second goal the jamie alexiak won the one that was the game
winner was icing but that they just missed oh i didn't talk about that in the video it was i mean
it was by this no no have you he's clearly like 10 feet in front of the blue in front of the red
line so yeah but like if you look at the breakdown that the lightning had defensively yeah well
So after that, it's awful.
But Hedman, that's the reason Hedman's not below the dots
in the defensive zone, because he thought it's icing,
and he slows down.
See, to me, the problem wasn't Hedman.
It was the fact that Hedman had a guy,
and then I think it was Radulov.
No one had Radulov.
Right.
They forgot one of the more dangerous players in the Stars.
But Hedman could have been there, back there,
to at least help with the play,
and then maybe it doesn't lead to a goal, right?
Maybe.
So I just think it's so circumstantial
those first those first two goals and then you go to the third period they out shoot dallas 22 to 2
and the freaking goalie has to stand on his head so i'm just like okay all these things i look at
the game as a whole and i break down okay tampa also came off of uh what was it one night rest
after beating uh winning after beating the islanders dallas has been sitting there for
four or five four days and then so i'm like okay i look at the rest of the series i'm gonna still
pick tampa yeah all things considered but to me like and i said this in the video today when the
game was close in the first and second period the stars outshot tampa 18 to 14 yes right some
score effects with that third period oh the third period was the park the busiest park the bus i
have ever freaking seen one one of their two shots was against a goalie by the way yeah the second
one was into an empty net they got one shot on a goalie faced one shot in the third oh but
like uh i saw i saw a tweet apparently the only tweets i read are sarah sibians uh she just goes
stop hating defense or stop thinking defense is boring and don decision very rightly pointed out
this was a tampa islanders game he goes i wouldn't call what the islanders are doing defense
I think I would call what the Stars did defense.
Yeah.
Because they were very clearly playing one way.
They played their game in the third period, and it worked.
They're – if Tampa's going to beat them,
I would love to see how they're going to do it.
If Dallas –
They weren't good enough in game one.
Dallas wins.
Dallas becomes the new team that everybody's trying to do.
I can guarantee you.
Absolutely terrible.
Because here's the thing.
Dallas' model is economically viable for a lot of teams
that don't have a lot of money to spend you don't have the players that i named three undrafted
players yeah you you have one keep your answer dowling yeah now you can't rely on dowling to
come in and score a goal but like but you know you got two stars you got ben and sagan right and i
mean obviously they've got other stars on the team they've got a great defensive core they've got two
great goalies but they are not paying a fortune for these people right they got two guys are
paying a fortune for and everybody else is pretty economical and for teams that are going to be a
little more cash strapped they're going to look at dallas and go okay we could play freewheeling
but that's an expensive game to play as we know with the leafs and oftentimes like with the leafs
it doesn't get you anywhere but we could get into this defensively responsible shut them down game
that dallas does but i don't think anybody's going to be able to be as good at it as dallas is do you
know what i'm saying it's like when boston became the the hallmark team to beat uh after 2011 nobody
was better at playing boston hockey than boston nobody think about emulating a team is that you
have to have the coaching staff and the player buy-in you know you have to have that team to
emulate that team and you can't just automatically take that team and put them on your your eyes
man i did the more
the more i look at the at the more i watch the stanley cup playoffs i go can the leafs
even win games this way like can they win a playoff round in that way ever can they
can they do what dallas did last night get out shot 22 to 2 and weather the storm well
There's not a damn chance.
Let's talk about the Leafs because when it comes to any free agent
that's a major player, the Leafs are always going to be sort of in on it.
Yeah, they have money.
Now, Alex Petrangelo, here's what Alex Petrangelo had to say
about his contract negotiations yesterday.
Now, I have to say, Greg Wyshynski said these comments are negotiating
through the media, and also there's no clear sentence in Greg's mind.
nothing is clear about where
Petrangelo wants to be, which is St. Louis, than these
comments. He's just trying
to put pressure on the Blues organization, according
to Greg. I don't know if I fully agree
with that, but I'm going to read you the comments,
okay?
So, the first part
of it was, there was a discussion today,
and I guess the best way to sum it up
is we haven't really made much progress, and this is what
Alex Petrangelo told Jeremy Rutherford
of The Athletic. We think
just, we just think right now
where things are at, that maybe it's best for both sides to see what's going on in free agency,
what the team can explore, what I can explore, and if there are better fits for each side.
We're a little disappointed that we're in this situation. We weren't able to hammer out the
details that we wanted in a deal. There was some work that we tried to get done that we just
couldn't get done. So both sides agreed that maybe it's in the best interest. We're two weeks away,
not saying anything can't change, but as of right now, that's kind of the plan. And we'll see where
things go and he also mentioned a little bit later on that um people have maybe leaned into
him being a blue or staying a blue much more than he even has as in saying you know he's got four
kids his wife is from the st louis area um you know of course he'd want to stay there and i still
think that's true you know all of that can be true but he's saying just because that's true doesn't
mean it's going to happen and i still think i think pat i think petrangelo is going to be a blue
but if this goes to free agency i think that that conversation has completely changed and i know that
that's like well that's the easy take of course of course it's completely changed but really think
about this you think the blues are going to let him go to free agency and if if they if they really
believe um that they have a shot at keeping him you know if the blues are serious about keeping
alex petrangelo he's not going to free agency he's not because what happens is it's like well
he's willing to take a discount now but let's say that the discount's a million dollars and he's
making eight million a year rather than nine and uh which is just great that's a great amount of
money i'm sure it'd be fantastic to take a million dollar discount i can't imagine so they ask him to
take a discount and he does at $8 million. But the thing is, on free agency day, he's getting
an offer that's $9.5 million. So he's going to say, not only do I not have to take a haircut
on a deal, I'm going to make that much money, but over seven years, and I'm going to make $9.5
million a year. And the team that's going to come at him and pay him most of the salary up front is
the Leafs. So St. Louis knows that if he goes to free agency, the Leafs are going to say,
we'll give you how much we'll give you 20 or 30 million dollars in the first 24 months
like that's what they did with Tavares Tavares's deal they gave him literally like 20 million
dollars in the first two years oh I think it's more it might even be more than that oh my god
it's so much more and like financially that's what you want you want to do that because any
financial advisor will tell you get as much as you can up front and then you can over time grow
that money oh my god what what is it up front okay here uh can someone can someone do the
addition please yeah in his first year taveras makes 15.9 okay 15.25 in bonus he's got a base
salary of 650 000 so 15.9 plus what else we got you know taveras's base salary never goes above
910 by the way there you go so sorry first year 15.9 second year 15.9 third year 12
so what percent 43.8 million dollars in the first three years oh bad oh my god wait how much was
that again 43.8 in the first three years out of 77 so that i don't and i don't know if i counted
did i count yeah i would have counted the the the base in that yeah so oh my god no no yeah i told
you the full so that's so that's the point i'm trying to make is that like okay it's all well
and good to say i want to stay in st louis but imagine in the next three years you can make
almost 50 million dollars do the leafs how deep is that well like i know they're doing better than
any other nhl team steve how deep is that well 40 million dollars just to name the arena alone
yeah you're right no it was more than that i'm pretty sure didn't the scotia bank deal
pay for tavaris's contract entirely oh yeah it's an 800 million dollar deal 800 i thought it was 80
800 million over 20 years yes it's 800 million dollars it's 40 million dollars a season or
something like that isn't it no close to a billion yeah the scotia bank naming rights i'm gonna look
it up right now i uh damn you know what guys remember how we were 40 million a year for the
next 20 years it's 40 million 800 million dollars you know what we were gonna pool our money and get
panther season seats we gotta just open a bank yeah right we gotta do so yeah open a bank so
it's an 800 million dollar deal um so yeah they could easily do that and that's just that now
obviously there's a huge huge amount of money coming in from the raptors and the tv rights
in canada and the united states there's revenue sharing in the nba as well
although i'm sure the raptors are a have team not a have not team i don't know if there's any
they would be paying into the revenue share yeah are they are there any have not teams in the nba
anymore like i don't think there are like but that tv deal like they're all i would think like
a market like sacramento yeah maybe maybe charlotte a couple of those yeah so so the
leafs the leafs well is deep and the other thing you got to look at is we're not always going to
be in a pandemic situation right this is an organization that's worth several billion
dollars ideally uh they would probably well at a certain point it becomes not a pandemic anymore
it just becomes a fact of life you hope so right I mean that's the thing that's the sad part but
it's sort of like are we gonna socially distance for the next 80 years I don't think so so you know
that's the that's the point where we're at and so if I'm the Leafs yeah I can get through the next
few years with with less revenue than I have before and I will find the Leafs organization
the MLSC behind them is really good at making money so they'll find other ways and with Alex
petrangelo he's going to look at that and go yes i could make eight million bucks a year and get
some bonuses and stuff from st louis or in the next three years in toronto i can make 50 million
dollars that is the type of thing that that's why the conversation changes as soon as october 9th
hits and teams start throwing numbers like that at him uh then then all of a sudden your mindset
changes it's frankly like okay so we take the next three years or the next five years and we
live in toronto and if we want to come back to st louis later we can but like i there's no other
opportunity to make this kind of money in this short amount of time there's like so that's so
that's the thing and so i actually think if he hits free agency the chances of him going to a
team like toronto go from like five percent which i would cap at it right now because i still think
he's going to be a blue to like 70 i really do i believe that here's how differently the leaves
do business by the way uh because we were talking about those crazy bonuses so i'm looking at the
st louis blues cap friendly um and i'm looking at all the players who have one year remaining
until they're a ufa and i see alex steen and his entire salary is just his salary no bonus
jayden schwartz same thing tyler bozak same thing
uh like oh and carl gunnarsson yep just his salary is his salary what a weird concept
like it's i'm not making fun of the blues by the way i'm like holy shit the leafs really are the
bank we're all in agreement it seems like that um petro's what the leafs should be going after
and what they need right like i don't there's there seems to be no debate around that it seems
to be, oh, if he's available, go after him, try and get it. But there seems to be no discussion
about, okay, is this how the Leafs want to spend their money? Is that what's going to be moving out
if they do sign him? And is it the right move to make? Well, so if what's going to be moving out
is William Nylander, let's just be honest, that's what's going to happen. Yeah, no, it has to be
because no one's going to take Marner's contract. And I think the value that Nylander and Marner
bring relative to the money that they make the four million dollar difference between what Marner
makes what William Nylander makes is not made up for in the stat sheet meaning that per dollar you
get more value out of William Nylander he might score 20 less points per year but he is dollar
for dollar the more valuable player if you take contracts into it and he is another guy who
imagine and he scored more goals from in tight than any other player in the league this year
so he's william nylander signed a 45 million dollar contract
12 plus 9 is 21 plus 2.5 23.5 million of that has already been paid
i mean talk about value right yeah so you think about so think about this for a second
Not only are you able to sign Petrangelo,
but you've got cash-strapped teams dying for a goal scorer
who's got an incredible shot, which Nylander does,
who'll get into tight spaces,
who, despite what your dad and your uncle say, he will do.
This guy is a top-line player
who doesn't have much money left on his deal.
He could fetch an absolute boatload.
The problem is his rest of the league apparently doesn't value him.
so mitch marner's contract by the way uh you know what he is tradable man uh the cap
yeah the cap hits wild so that that is definitely a difficult that might be attractive though to
teams and they could always absorb like a little bit of it bring it down to like eight you know
could i would really like them not i wouldn't want to yeah but if the deal was like big enough
and you get enough assets and that's like a hold up then you make an exception this is how much
fucking money the Leafs have so remember we just said what we said about Nylander and his deal
what we we said what we said about Tavares and his deal Marner made 16 million dollars last season
and within the last few weeks assuming his bonus was paid uh I believe September 1st they were
paid September 1st uh September 1st he got a check for 14.3 million dollars which means 20.3
million no oh my god 30.3 million dollars of his 65.3 million dollar contract has been paid nearly
half of his contract has already been paid so then there's a tradable deal that's a very tradable
beliefs have nothing but tradable deals in my opinion everyone's talking about like the cap
it the cap it and how quickly everything's changed to that not being the most important
thing anymore well teams are still going to be cap strapped because it didn't go up or anything
but but but that's the thing is that a lot of them don't want to pay real dollars for it
oh right they don't want to pay real dollars and i'm not saying marner gets traded so now
knowing that that sort of changes the argument but if you um if you have a player like mitch
marner that comes on the market there's value there and the fact is that the the market has
changed as such that you need players that are going to fill out your cap space, but you don't
necessarily have to pay them for a lot of teams, right? You don't have to pay them that amount of
money. So half of his contract's already been paid. He's going into year two. That's pretty
attractive. That's an easy sell on an owner. And so if you look at that, so if Nylander's the guy
the rest of the league doesn't want, then that's fine because they're crazy. That guy is money in
the bank yeah and anybody that tells you differently is flat out wrong because all that value you speak
of they can they have it on their team so you can just keep it and that value is yours yeah no but
if a guy like talking about willie neilander and asm cadre yeah well but if a guy like martyr would
become available that's a boatload of assets now are you gonna get another mitch marner probably
not but the chances of you being a little bit more even and i you know what maybe brian burke was
right the whole time you can't spend that much money on your forwards i mean it's pretty clear
that something's wrong and if you can get a guy like petrangelo in there and you've got morgan
reilly for two more years and you've got some money spread around you know justin hall isn't
your secondary right like i mean if you if you trade that mitch marner deal you've got two or
three million bucks still to spend or more because you've gotten rid of casperi capitan's deal
oh my god man petrangelo if he goes to the market the leafs need to figure this out the
leafs need him more than anyone else does how many times are we going to do this oh a lot
what do you like one of the leafs this is the same taveras conversation this is the same
stamkos conversation welcome to the evil empire man of course this is the brad richards conversation
we were talking about taveras no no no no it's different though because brad richards they didn't
get taveras they did but the conversation leading into it was how the hell are the leafs going to
afford taveras now they've got him all of the contracts for the big guys went so much worse
than we assume and we're still assuming that alex petrangelo is going to come here yeah i mean i'd
like it i think they can make it pretty attractive for him i it's a great place to live it's uh it's
a um it's an insane amount of money yeah yeah what what what would you uh what would you offer
me there at least well we pay you with money so we'll start there yeah um we'll pay you an american
to live in canada yeah we pay you the day it's due yep so there's that
jesus and once you're a leaf you're gonna just make money for the rest of your life because
at what point this i always go back to like i know the leafs well is deep but at what point
does someone within the conglomerate go is this a great way for us to spend money
oh they find other ways other than play tinkering with players so that three-way trade that the
leafs did with the blackhawks and golden knights where they had robin leonard for a hot minute and
they retained on them so unless i'm mistaken the leafs paid a 1.1 million dollars for
as far as i can see half an hour of robin lennar half an hour of robin lennar and a fifth round
pick the 153rd overall pick is worth 1.1 million dollars even if that calculation is wrong and it's
a few hundred thousand what and like it's not even the first time they've done that
at what point like even if they trade one of these guys oh yeah we paid we paid 30 million
dollars for literally a season of them at what point does someone within mlsc goes
this sucks actually yeah we're losing an unbelievable amount of money and i'd like to
stop well they don't because they're not no but like that's no but it's a terrible way to spend
money though no no it's not it's actually not 30 million dollars for one season of mitch marner
steve you're not looking at a good way to spend your money yeah i'm sure they made up just by
having mitch marner and yes all the ad revenue all the jersey sales all the absolutely maybe
you're looking at three or 30 million dollars you're forgetting the three or 400 million they
bring in yeah like it's not just like a board yeah you're looking at this point you're looking
at yeah like are you kidding cute do you think that a corporation like them would would throw
money around like this if they weren't making astounding amounts of money dude this is not
this is these are these are the things that make you money if they need to save money somewhere
frankly they cut other staff that's what that's what we're seeing around the league
Now the Leafs haven't done that.
Like MLSC has not done that, but that's what they do.
We're going to trim elsewhere.
We're not going to trim with the players.
So that's how rich they are?
Yes.
That's a story.
I have a DM from a listener on that if you, at some point, if you like it.
Like one you can read on the show?
I asked him and he said, go ahead.
Did you ask the guy?
Pull it up.
What are you waiting for?
Give me a second.
Give me a second.
So, Steve, it's not like the $30 million is a write-off, man.
It's a write-off because it's a contract player.
They've got the best tax people in the world.
They've got the best moneymakers in the world.
Like, this is not – this is a first-class organization.
They're going to find a way.
And it's a Canadian organization.
Yeah.
$30 million American?
What the hell is that?
It's like 45.
That's not true.
But it's a lot.
It'd be close to 40.
i got the uh i got the dm here if you'd like to hear it let's hear it this is from anonymous
i just wanted to chime in a bit about the sports team budget cuts discussion you had on the podcast
i happen to work full-time for a professional sports team in toronto with a base salary of
forty thousand dollars we all started working from home at about mid-march this year and
thankfully our management was able to secure our jobs until october 1st in order to do this
any employees making over $80,000 took a 15% cut starting in June until the October 1st noted date.
We had a virtual town hall on Tuesday, this would have been last week, Tuesday,
and were informed that these salary cuts to employees would end and that actual personnel
cuts would begin. It's been evident that a lot of us on the lower pay spectrum will be the ones to
go first and i must say that although i'm grateful for the past months working at home
it's extremely disappointing to see the organization giving money to players
and coaching personnel while knowing that many of my colleagues and myself will be without a job in
a few weeks are you serious early a difference of value between players to personnel however
a single player's contract in this sport is more than enough to keep myself and hundreds of others
employed clearly the sport isn't the nhl they say anyways just wanted to give an update from
someone experienced this firsthand love the podcast and think you guys are fantastic keep
up the great work stay safe go leafs go so interesting for a person inside of a organization
in toronto so for so we're working with a pretty limited list here what does mlse own the leafs
The Raptors, TFC, I think the Argos now.
Didn't they get the Argos?
And the Marlies.
For all the Americans who are like, what?
The CFL, the Canadian Football League.
Which didn't operate this year.
The only team, the only one of the major teams anyway,
is the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Toronto Six have not played a game yet.
So let's not count them.
And I suppose there's the teams in the Canadian Premier League.
Yeah, but Steve, we're talking about a salary
that could cover all of these employees.
So the Toronto Sticks and the Wolfpack and all those guys
are not going to be able to – they're not making big money.
Right.
So I'm just going to say the conversation to me changes pretty aggressively
if the person whose email we just read works for a team within the MLSC umbrella.
I would agree with that.
Because now we're paying $1.1 million for the 153rd overall pick.
But they didn't know that at the trade deadline.
no i suppose that's true you can't you can't that's the type of money they're
that's the type of money they're working with right right but that was pre-pandemic
it's a different world you can't get that's apples to oranges but i agree with what the
person said is that it's tough for me to swallow that all this money is being spent on players
when you know when not even a tenth of that contract could keep everybody employed right
the 12th guy on the raptors bench is paying for the salary of a hundred people yeah you know so
this is for everyone like why am i not going as hard as i was like for montreal or minnesota
we don't know who this hasn't happened yet but it's gross it's disgusting you don't know the
team but like you just there's a limited number you can guess from right so it's they're all teams
i give money to it's clearly the hamilton bulldogs like obviously oh man i don't even want to think
about like what the hell junior teams are doing and yo i don't i'll be honest with you talk about
gate driven like what the hell are they gonna do yeah i i'm not a big fan of the i think the
i'll just say it i think the ohl setup is outdated and wrong and does not help the development of
minors and uh i'm a bigger fan of what the ncaa does and that just tells you how low of an opinion
i have of taking kids away from their families and and and not giving them an education from the age
is 16 i really have an issue i have a moral issue with the way that is run but we can save that for
another episode no if anything breaks that up i'm happy with that what's that i would 100 back you
up that point and i would think i would hope one day in this country we see you sports develop the
hockey players of the future as opposed to at the ohl yes thank you once they graduate high school
they go to these schools and they get their education while they're also playing these
sports i'd be happy to see um i'd be happy to see like i understand in a lot of these smaller
communities too these teams are like that's the that's a a big point for their for their community
and i get that uh my issue is that you're you're the the prioritizing of um i mean we look at a
key malley like i mean and that's an extreme example but it's pretty prevalent from what we
understand and and i mean let's let's not pretend that hot that school is going to come first with
a lot of this stuff. So, you know, I think that there needs to be a major shift in how that's
changed and how that's done. And we can, you know, I'd love to actually have people who've
been through that system come on and talk about it. Because I think we've accepted for too long
that that's just the way things are without going, how could we make this better? And I'm not saying
it doesn't, it shouldn't exist. I'm saying, could we not do this better? Could we not be better
about this is they're not a more responsible way to develop young hockey talent especially
when most of these guys aren't even ever going to see europe right like they're going to be
playing tier three italian league hockey yeah a lot of guys playing austria italian league maybe
the e yeah you know that's the that's the thing that i'm worried about is like what do you do
once that's over so it's always tough when you run into a guy who's your age and he's like yeah i
played junior but i blew up my acl when i was 19 so that was it you know yeah and that was it
that's tough so i think there's more responsible ways we could do this and i think there's more
responsible ways than the ncaa does it too i'm not a fan i'm just saying yeah if we could maybe
innovate and maybe do a combo of both and get people some education along the way that would
be super duper and i would be down for that uh that's saying you support the ncaa is a whole
other thing i didn't notice i didn't say that i don't think anybody would agree with that well
and i'm sure i'll get a dm going don't you know about the ncaa yes student athletes want money
not so fast said adam wilde a virgin radio's morning by the way i'm pro athletes getting
paid they should get paid those kids should get paid 90 000 people show up at the stadium and
they're not getting a paycheck fuck you get out of here do you realize do you realize like
university stadium numbers are so out of whack for me as a hockey fan that whenever i read them
i think they're fake yeah they're double the nfl yeah like the the big house for um michigan
yeah uh for the leafs red wings everyone's like oh yeah it's over a hundred thousand people or
whatever it is i'm like as if you're gonna stuff the entire population of pickering in a building
get which apparently they do on like a weekly basis or some shit that's insane that's wild
alabama like alabama their stadium i know it's 101 000 people seats like and weekly they're just
like all right 101 000 people come watch the crimson tide and that's alabama yeah like we
you know hey toronto's the top five city in north america did you know no we're still just a tiny
little we're a cute little cottage on on the big landmass that is north america yeah it was cute
um after the show uh last episode marcus johansson was traded for eric stall and marcus johansson had
just signed from uh like free agency had just signed with buffalo um and it's interesting
because eric stall has put up great numbers in minnesota and was loved there but eric stall
you know we thought he was getting long in the tooth before he is 35 years old
but still put up similar numbers to marcus johansson last year
19 goals 28 assists marcus johansson with nine goals 21 assists and costs more yeah stall is
the better producer johansson i believe has the better underlying numbers stall put up i think it
was back-to-back really good seasons underlying numbers this past season was a bit of a struggle
now the buffalo sabers suck very good so what do they need better players true that would be true
for most teams you need better players ryan o'reilly talked about not enjoying hockey anymore
and then went on to win the con smith the next year with a different team that's how bad the
atmosphere is in Buffalo. This is a brilliant move for them, I think, even if Stahl proves to
be the worst player. Why? They don't have Eric Stahl to outscore Marcus Johansson. They have
Eric Stahl to get Jeff Skinner to score more than 11 goals. Eric Stahl was a former teammate
of Jeff Skinner, right? So he's coming in there. He's going to take some of the leadership burden
off of jack eichel and he out of all the guys i talked to in st louis at the all-star game eric
still was a pleasure i think he was the best one i spoke to and like the former stanley cup champion
he's been in the league for 400 years there's nothing he hasn't seen before i just feel like
personality wise he is absolutely exactly what that team needs and if he puts in 15 maybe 20
goals as well holy shit it's well worth it and in terms of actual money the minnesota wild once
again take on an additional million dollars isn't it hilarious that i went on my rant about the
minnesota wild last show and within an hour they took on another million dollars dollars
million dollars dollars buffalo dollars don't you know
and then they announced they weren't going to bring back Miku Koi
okay
I don't know
I just I don't understand
okay if you're Bill Guerin what the hell
is
why
how did you make the Minnesota Wild better by doing that
I think Dom LeCision and Sarah Sivian are going to be
the stars of our show today because Dom
made a really good point as he often
does and
disagree
put this on your chart
counterpoint uh don basically don basically said that he's like i i don't know what it is with
people who go into minnesota but it's like they go in and they it's like they need to galaxy brain
everything and they don't but he said it was essentially it was like why does every gm come
in like fenton did before like fletcher did before and go i'm gonna try to overthink everything and
this trade to me from minnesota seems like an overthink why do you need marcus johansson
yeah you see him as a center man but what is he okay so his underlying numbers are good
but that's a lot of money to bring in for a guy that scored nine goals last year
so i don't remember who might be a center who might be a center that's another important he's
not naturally like they didn't bring him in as a center in buffalo i don't think even
did that i think i think they brought him in that way and then he slowly was not one um i don't
remember who i was reading if it was sportsnet.ca or maybe it was michael russo with the athletic
but they talked about Bill Guerin wanting to disrupt the room.
He didn't like the room, thought it was way too comfortable in Minnesota.
But to me, taking Eric Stahl out of a room improves nothing.
Improves absolutely – out of all the guys to take out, that's the one?
I mean, if his sole mission was to get everyone's attention on the team,
i think mission accomplished yeah he definitely did he got rid of the fun dad
but now who needs a fun dad more than the buffalo sabers
but i don't know to me to me it's one of those deals that i
frankly don't care how it shakes out on paper i just think it's a better move
for the sabers and from the wilds perspective i don't
understand the purpose it's a higher cap hit higher dollar
amount don't get it less production what what
What's the goal here?
What was the motivation?
Yeah, I don't get it.
I don't get it either.
I'm with you.
I don't understand it.
I understand you want to disrupt the room
while taking Eric Stahl out of a room
that's already about to lose Mikko Koivu.
Yeah, you're losing the captain already.
It's a hell of a way to do it.
I haven't heard the greatest things about Ryan Sutter.
Suter.
Really?
In that room.
Oh, yeah.
The other thing I want to...
I do want to...
Mikko Koivu's name is interesting
because, yes, he's a veteran.
He's older, whatever.
Was the captain for years.
I got a ton of messages, obviously from Leaf fans,
going, what do you think about him on the third line?
Is he cooked?
You know, we love the way Jason Spezza played this year, right?
Yeah.
You want to put him on the third line?
No.
That's how I feel.
Miku Koivu, in 55 games this season, had four goals, 17 assists, 21 points.
Like, with a lot of time off, you know,
maybe he can be one of those guys who, you know.
I want to know how hard he plays, you know.
Well, this is the thing, right?
This guy's 37.
Yeah.
I mean, he's going to be 38 halfway through next year.
But how hard are the miles?
And they're hard miles.
They're hard-ass miles.
Yeah.
Man, that guy's been Mikko Koivu for a long time.
That's hard.
It's hard to be Mikko Koivu.
can you is he a guy that you can trust on the penalty kill though is he a guy like that's the
thing is that like what i like about a guy like nico coivu is if you could he makes more sense
than even a guy like spezza does because if you can get him at a reasonable deal and he's your
fourth line center and he's uh and he's able to take power play minute or sorry penalty kill
minutes then all of a sudden that's sort of attractive because it's like you're paying
low low salary low risk and he plays more than one role that's been the problem with the leafs
It's like sometimes on their fourth lines, it's like there's a one –
this guy can only play fourth-line minutes.
He can't play any specialty teams.
But the thing with Spezza, who I would like to see come back,
and the thing with Koivu, you know, they keep talking about, like,
the guys who could be out of town.
And Pierre Engvall's name is coming up in those conversations more and more.
And I'm just looking at how he played in the playoffs.
I grilled him for a long time because I'm like,
where did that production go?
He was on, like, a 40-point pace for a while, and then he went –
I think it was like 25 games without scoring a goal,
except for one on David Ayers,
which gave him the win, by the way,
in that godforsaken game that none of us will ever forget.
But then I saw him in the playoffs.
I saw him on the penalty kill.
I saw him play center pretty effectively for $1.25 million.
Why are we rushing this guy out the door?
To bring in Mikko Koivu?
To bring in a 38-year-old almost?
I don't think that's what the Leafs are thinking.
yeah i'm sure they're seeing i'm sure they'd like but the thing is that he's got a slot in a
like i think i think kerfoot's gonna go and i think um andreas johnson's gonna go good keep
engvall do those two things keep engvall there's no reason to trade a cap it like that or you or
or career player go and johnson stays but whatever whatever there's no reason to trade pierre
i just like to plant my flag in that right now unless unless you get great value back but like
i don't know how anyone watched the playoffs and saw people gush about the fourth line
it was dude it was engvall he was the straw who stirred the drink that had so many times
the leaves look dead in the water and then he gets out there he's he's impossible to miss
he's the world's fastest giraffe i've never seen a giraffe skate like that
You should put him on a line with Tony.
But Koivu, listen, I get it's the Leafs.
I get we, you know, fans get excited.
He's not Mikko Koivu from previous years.
No, there's no reason.
He might not even be the shell of Mike Medano that showed up in Detroit.
No, he's not.
Will he get stuck in?
It's a shame Mike got fired, eh?
Isn't it?
What milestone could he have helped Mikko miss?
1100 1100 games yeah you can miss 1100 games he's 72 shy jimmy howard by the way has said
he's probably not going to return to detroit but has not tabled retirement as an option
okay so i saw that and uh who wants to play a game called let's talk about how bad jimmy howard was
that dude was bad yeah dude he had an 882 with a record of
223 and two he had 27 games where he was the goalie of record what's 27 times two help me
i'm stupid at math that's 54 points up for grabs yeah he got the red wings six
holy god he's there's no way he's there's no way he is given an nhl job out of camp
i could see him going to the ahl proving that he still got it and then coming up
any team who gives him an nhl job out of camp i i don't know what the hell you're thinking
Jonathan Bernier somehow got 15 wins out of that god-awful group.
What the hell is Jimmy Howard talking about?
I can see him being the third goalie somewhere.
That's not bad.
Third goalie, sure.
Yeah.
If he still wants to keep playing, let him be a third goalie.
I have nothing wrong with that.
If he's willing to play in the A, I don't know.
I wouldn't even mind at least picking him up.
They need some depth down there if he can play in the A.
No, like in the ink.
Jimmy Howard or Casimir Kaskis.
Well, holy shit.
It's not a, listen, it ain't,
it's not a pretty picture right now with the Leafs.
The answer is neither, man.
The answer is neither.
Those are all still coming up.
Didn't he miss a season or Scott did?
Ian Scott.
That was Ian Scott.
Ian Scott did, yeah.
Okay.
So he'll hopefully come back and be better.
Hey, are we too far removed from the Stahl-Johansson trade
to talk about my Buffalo thing?
Well, I thought that's why I brought up Buffalo.
I thought we had talked about the Buffalo thing.
Steve asked me to bring up Buffalo.
I brought up Buffalo and, well.
It's a quick little thing.
Talk about it.
Of course.
Sorry.
Sorry.
What is your Buffalo thing?
We've talked about Sham Charan before.
So let me quickly.
Context for people who don't know.
Once again, I believe it was in 2013 or 2014,
Cam Charan, before he got hired to the Toronto Maple Leafs Analytics Department,
he was a writer for CanucksArmy.ca.
And he developed this system where he looked at the Canucks draft
record of the past 10 years or something along those lines and he goes what if instead of the
canucks picking who they picked they simply went with the next highest scoring major junior hockey
player and the consensus was sham sharon that little system that he put together kicked the
canucks draft records ass we've talked about buffalo's crappy draft record so i'm not as smart
as cam so i i did my own sham shtangle shtang wow all i did was i looked at the first pick
of every draft that the sabers the first pick the sabers have made of every draft since 2010
and i simply compared it to whoever went next folks it's bad in 2010 mark pissick the next pick
kevin hayes who was completely kicking ass for the philadelphia flyers next year joel armia
the next year nathan bull you this or the next pick was nathan bull you what i found funny is
there were a few bus and a bunch of them ended up playing for the sabers anyway the next year
mikhail grigorenko they could have had radic faxa kicking ass for the dallas stars this year
next year Rasmus Ristelainen could have had Bo Horvat the next year gets worse Sam Reinhardt
they could have had Leon Dreisaitl oh Jack Eichel Dylan Strom I would say they won that one
then they get right back on track they get Alex Nielander the next year or the next pick they
could have had Mikhail Sergeyev Casey Middlestadt Michael Rasmussen I don't know enough about him
who plays for the Red Wings. Rasmus Dahlien, you're not going to not
pick Rasmus Dahlien first overall, but Andrei Svechnikov was the first pick, and then
obviously Dylan Cousins, Philip Broberg.
They were only picked last year. It's not fair. Holy crap, is that bad?
Who would you pick? Who the Sabres picked, or the guy who happened
to go next? The next guy. I'm going to go with the guy who happened to go next.
Yeah, despite the fact that the Sabres have Eichel and Dahlien.
ooh um what what a what a what a group down the middle kevin hayes bo horvat leon dry sidle hell
yeah i'll take that jeez that's a good that's a good little team it's a good little team they're
a little they're a little fin on d oh god so you could sign somebody that was just something i was
putting together while i was bored today and i just went is that gonna be a video is that gonna
be a video maybe on this channel uh maybe a clip video on this channel are we in the clip video
right now whoa are we it might be this clip video is great tony's gone no he's here what did you
think of the joel edmondson deal for montreal like they trade for a guy that's they trade draft picks
for a guy we talked about this i think that that was a ufa so they can get him but then they sign
him to a pretty rich contract i think based on how he is um they were one of the teams who can't pay
everybody montreal every one of their employees yep remember oh okay okay so let me ask you this
what do we think joel edmondson i mean i i we were righted by eric eric angles with the backup
goalie situation with jake allen but this is a different one this is interesting i feel like i'm
doing the meme where i'm like the habs should do this the habs should do that the habs do exactly
that no not that way like so they should overpay for guys because they have the cap space they
should trade their picks because they have far too many yeah if it's so hard to sign free agents
they should go out and spend their draft capital and maybe spend a little too much
because you'll still improve your team this is not what i meant at all man this is not what i meant
uh joel edmondson had terrible numbers on the carolina hurricanes yes he had seven goals
uh so that was pretty good but dude 3.5 million dollars for the next four years i would love to
know where you came up with that number dude the trade itself was fine they're not going to miss
that pick no that is a wild amount of money for joel edmondson in my opinion 3.5 yeah yeah that's
uh well what pair is he on on most teams they're probably third that's a lot that's a lot man
that's a lot he better perform at a second pair level gonna have to doesn't have a choice oh
oh that's tough but now devil's advocate does it add to the Montreal Canadiens identity
because we talked about what the hell are they well they are Carey Price so they actually
solidify that identity by going out and getting a backup goalie to help Carey Price right their
defense it's not very good but they have some big names weber petrie okay now they get a guy for the
left in edmondson who can help out and then the forward group is just scrappy i mean i look at
how the dollar stars are winning games now how dare i compare the two you're right you're absolutely
right everyone shouting at the screen i am doing my best to justify this for montreal i understand
their thought process that's a tough deal man do you get do you get an extra 500k if you've won
the stanley cup in the last like two years like if you're coming from a championship team you get
an extra little 500 maybe another million it's just it's a sports thing right it's a guy who
who knows how to win he's a champion he's patrick mccall your team you know he might he might have
gone next uh unless your name is three i was just about to say that damn unless your name is
patrick maroon for who for whatever reason maybe he held out too long i don't know what happened
there i also think that's a guy i think the leafs are going to go hard at i think low heat that's a
guy that they're going to go right after because he's perfect on the third line for the leafs
well and he's a terror he's a terror and i talked about the need for sociopaths
what that's that's i mean imagine once he hits the ice he's a sociopath
a sociopath shoots a puck into the bench on purpose do you hate
robertson engvall and uh and maroon on the third line
i don't hate it screw it no one is gonna fuck with robertson if maroon's on the
ice no one they probably should get someone
for robbie eh yeah man i hate to get back to that but you
do like robertson like you have robertson and
marner like it's just it's a lot of you need some size you know somebody who just takes up space i
think i was actually an effective player i didn't listen to myself i and i should have because i i
was oh matt martin coming out of the lineup is a good thing for the leafs and blah blah blah blah
but i remember saying years and years ago teams have gone so far away from players like tom wilson
that tom wilson is going to become the outlier yes and he is he's noticeable in every single
game he plays positively or negatively and we looked at his contract and we went are the
capitals nuts and he's noticeable in every game he plays because there aren't many tom wilson's
there just aren't anymore every team's got like what one maybe maybe two i don't think the leafs
that one you know like ryan reeves never gets in fights because who the who's gonna fight ryan
reeves tom wilson might tom wilson's like one of the top 10 toughest guys in the league and even
he doesn't want to go him you know what i mean so i do i'm sorry in my caveman brain look at
165 pounds of 19 year old nick robertson and go yeah i would actually like a bouncer on the ice
with him yeah or even if he's not like i want him to be the next shift yep even blake coleman i want
in there as a contributor i would like i don't want blake coleman as a pair of fists patrick
maroon is a contributor who happens to be a pair of fists you know what i mean yep it's a little
different he's got that fighter's chin boy would would he be a hit here in toronto oh you know how
many maroon jerseys would get sold oh crazy you know how easy it is to to get leaf fans oh he's
got a beard i love this guy kyle clifford they're like he doesn't he didn't wear a helmet during
warm-up love this guy it's so easy to get in with this fan base patrick maroon would be beloved here
as long as he wasn't making too much because this fan base is not like that yeah if you make money
these fans might hate you yeah yeah if i'm patrick moran though i'm no thank you i'm not
going anywhere near toronto i didn't sign i didn't sign in st louis and tampa to friggin
have to deal with the toronto media you know what i mean i don't think he cares man he wants to win
which is why he took less to go to tampa yeah part of the reason and the media thing might be
a factor if all your signings are in uh like mid-market areas you know if i'm patrick maroon
he went to edmonton i mean that's where he broke so i'd be like can i have a payday please
like the most he's ever made in a season in his career is two million bucks that's wrong that's
crazy that is wrong crazy it is wrong yo he had 27 goals in edmonton one year i can't believe
david year but still so what like man he's still good for like 10 yep yep holy shit anyway
poor guy uh let's definitely cashed in on that let's do the press conference
um i think there's there's one thing we should uh i think we should touch on before we get to
the press conference what's that what i miss uh this week um our dear not so uh not friend of the
show steve simmons caused a storm on twitter this week oh just on twitter jesse twitter and real
life you know he he broke into the other side of the internet um he asked i'm gonna pull up the
exact uh the exact question here adam do you want to set this up so here's the thing before we get
into this i think there's something you need to know the toronto raptors are not responsible for
solving crime in toronto i'm not sure if you know what the toronto raptors do for a living
but the toronto raptors are responsible for playing basketball they choose to dip into
social issues because frankly they're majority black and a lot of the social discussion right
now is around how black people are treated in our society and people of color in general
but specifically black people and the conversation may have started in the states
but it's also here exclusive to the states bingo right so the types of questions that certain
reporters will ask say a lot about where that reporter is coming from if i were to give you
an idea of that think about the flyers reporter who said hey to the flyers players put all these
social issues aside after you've just postponed the nhl for two days with audible disgust in his
voice what do you think this is going to do to your play sam carghetti boo so this question
and jesse will will read it out to you verbatim yeah is what we call a dog whistle
and it is a question that it's it's it's along the lines of hey black people
there's this stuff going on in your community did you know that you're solely responsible for it
and this is this is the kind of question that outs you frankly given the outlet that steve
works for not entirely surprising however jesse go ahead and read the question so this was asked
to masai ujiri by steve simmons he said you're in a unique position being the only canadian team in
the nba and in charge of the only canadian team in the nba sometimes you see issues out there that
don't really pertain to this country at all and i'm wondering if in the city that you live in
and operate in shootings in toronto are up 180 percent since you came and joined the raptors
death by gunfire is up over 180 percent is it time for you and the raptors to get involved more
local issues to try and work with a city that's seeing crime at a rate it's never seen before
do you think now i want i want to context it even more please do because obviously that that
question made the biggest headlines but what preceded that question was a question by nba
reporter uh tim bontemps i'm not sure if i'm saying his last name correctly on tom
might be but he asked a question about messiah's experience in the bubble and how it's been
affected him and we all know the uh the incident that happened in golden state when the raptors
weren't were winning the championship and messiah answered tim's question with a four minute stream
of consciousness on how that incident in Golden State affected him and how when the video came
out in the bubble, he couldn't sleep some of his nights while in the bubble and how he questioned
his own reality because of this police officer and his sheriff who were lying about the actual
incident that took place and how when the video came out, he actually felt vindicated. And then
he thought about how he's a person who comes from privilege and that there's so many people who
aren't in his position of privilege to fight this in the court system that he was able to do.
And he talked about this for four minutes straight, answering a simple question from Tim.
And that answer was immediately followed up by Steve Simmons asking him a whataboutism,
which is just such, like, that's so, Steve, you're a lazy journalist. Like that, you go to a
whataboutism right after he has this beautiful thing about talking about his experience of being
a black man in America. And Steve asked him, oh, but what about gun violence in Toronto? It's just,
it's so disrespectful just to another human who just poured their soul out, an executive
in this position of power to be so vulnerable and honest, to follow that up with a racist question.
So that's everything that was in behind Steve Simmons's question, just to give it in context.
Now, let me just throw this out there. I find it really funny that the Toronto Sun,
focuses so much on gun violence which they do when they are the most pro-gun newspaper in the
country i find it shocking what are we going to do about gun violence not take away the fucking
guns that's for sure it's it's clearly a certain within certain communities that's what you hear
within certain communities oh yeah so you're going to ask the black president of the majority black
sports team about those certain communities and what he plans to do inside those interesting
al dubas didn't get us this shit yeah that's weird right it's crazy you know brendan shanahan's asked
all the time about gun violence in toronto and please let me get this out of the way we often
whenever steve simmons has a a misstep quote unquote uh we always bring up well he was very
nice to us and he came on the podcast seven years ago or whatever it was dude this is pretty fucked
up no i am i i think i'm over that yeah i don't think we need to say that anymore no yeah we need
to be fair to anymore no i think we are being fair we're being fair if we tell no lies you
know what i mean well in his response because kayla gray tweeted about it this was the twitter
part and he retweeted her and said something to the effect of do you have a comprehension or a
hearing problem so yeah kayla gray followed up kayla gray in that news conference it went tim
then steve then kayla gray from tsn and kayla gray's follow-up question was about hey
masai how does it feel to always be asked these questions when you're just trying to talk about
uh how black lives matter and be anti-racism but people still question your motives so she
went directly at steve following his question which was fair because his question was ridiculous
and then she tweeted
afterwards that
she said love
a but what about black on black
crime question just disguised
in should the Raptors not also focus
on gun violence in our city
and then Steve tweeted at her
directly and I also
like to mention that her tweet did not
mention him like his name
at all so he went searching for it
or he saw it somehow and then he
followed up by saying
do you have a hearing problem or a comprehension problem i asked messiah about crime in toronto
the word black never came up nor did it come up in doing the research for the question
that's being a little daft that's that's being well and that's intentional right
because that's that's the plausible deniability of this all racism without racists right
just because people don't walk around with uh uh klu klux klan hoodies on doesn't mean that there
are not racist elements to their personality or their point of view frankly and that is if he
like truly truly steve is smart enough to know exactly what he was doing and he was playing to
his base which is a bunch of pretty racist people frankly and by the way for anyone shocked by that
statement go and look at the fucking responses holy shit and didn't just last show i made an
off comment you look at people who are like i hate nylander too remember last week he had
something with nylander how he came up and you look down you look at the thread and it's just
man a lot of people who hate this guy also hate a lot of very specific groups of people
so i i'm not finding the lie in what adam said there sorry man continue that's okay that's all
right um he's got a base that he's playing to it's a dangerous game he's playing he can't he
knows deep down but at a certain point i think some people just tune it out and don't care
well i think that's the visceral reaction right for sure that's that's the that's the problem part
yeah and so you know it's a uh he's smart enough to understand the difference
uh but you know i think also sometimes if you're in a bubble with a bunch of people who
echo your point you know i don't know if anyone's seen the social dilemma
um uh documentary on netflix it's fucking wild um but you know you you get into that sort of
echo chamber where a bunch of people that agree with you and don't challenge your viewpoints
it's good to know that people like steve simmons are out there asking questions like that
it's good to know that because it's important that you know that this is a fight that is ongoing and
is not ended and that it is a uh pervasive and uh a very very insidious thing that's in our culture
embedded in our culture that's what makes it insidious you would ask steve simmons hey don't
you feel like that was a bit racially insensitive? And he would say, absolutely not. Steve, are you
a racist? No, of course not. Why would I? No way. And that's the point. We've been trying to talk
about this over and over and over again, but it's this thing of racism without racist. There's a
book. It's called that. Read it. And it gets into, and listen, nobody's perfect. Everybody has
viewpoints that have evolved over time. But if you saw what you saw this summer and you're asking a
question like that then you haven't learned a fucking thing or you've learned it but you don't
care right i think that's that's the side he's taking yeah dude it's we'll leave it at that
no it's yeah it's awful he was wrong he was wrong for what he said sure he was wrong for the
question you'll never get an apology because that's not what he does no he doubled down by
going at a reporter publicly a black woman publicly and calling asking her if she has a
hearing problem that's how he followed up his question it's not cute we're just stating things
that happen you're asking a man who is just a victim of systemic racism why he's fighting for
systemic racing racism to stop thank you so what do you think yeah the the the exhausting
the exhausting you know just because you are devoting your energy to one thing
means you endorse or condone or something else that's going on but like the gun violence in
the city of toronto isn't even like something that should be his problem what you need to do
what you need to do with everything in your life is remember that this conversation never stops
remember that this keeps going and remember that you have to be as suck as shitty as it is
you have to be aware of the other side you can't you can't just go on twitter and tweet this stuff
and then and then and then not know you should know thy enemy because that the enemy doesn't
have to be a single person it's an idea and that's a tough one to move it's a value judgment
It's not rational. You're fighting against something that, like there's two types of
decisions that we make. There are rational ones and then there's value judgments.
A value judgment can only change in a person when the circumstance of their life shows them that
it's no longer valuable to have that. And so in this particular case, you are fighting in a lot
of cases, racism and the embedded racism in our culture is value judgment. And that's what you're
facing and so that this conversation must continue and continue and continue and guess what you're
going to get tired of it but guess what black people are pretty tired of it right the while
the uh anyway i thought the question was wrong to begin with i did not know the four or five
minutes that proceeded to jesse that's unbelievable context and makes it yeah a lot anyway just
fucking anyway oh you you said it adam jess fucking can i end the show on a good note yeah
done i want to shout out um chase claypool adam what a name chase claypool is a wide receiver
for the pittsburgh steelers i thought he was a race car driver for sure today chase claypool
caught an 85-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger.
I like Chase Claypool because he is from Abertsford, British Columbia.
Whoa!
Shout out to the Canadian kid for catching touchdowns
for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He shouldn't have been a race car driver.
That's a WHL name.
Chase Claypool?
That guy definitely plays for the Silver Tips.
Are you kidding?
Not the Steelers.
Chase Claypool.
17-3 at the half.
And I retweeted that.
And then Lucas, who is definitely a podcast listener,
is like, congrats, you're beating Jeff Driscoll.
I don't care.
They're winning.
I don't care.
Okay?
I don't care.
They're winning.
They're winning.
I'll beat up on everybody.
If they show up to the game in their NFL caliber,
then we're beating them.
Okay?
So go Steelers.
Here we go.
Fucking Steelers.
Let's go.
Let's go.
And I think Steelers, underrated team in the NFL,
I think they're going to do some good things this year.
Just throwing that out there.
You're not catching a guy named Chase.
No.
I like that.
That's awesome.
Also, the funniest thing I think out of the NFL today was Carson Wentz
for the Pittsburgh Philadelphia Eagles, sorry, was booed off the field
even though there were no fans in the stadium.
Whoever is in charge of the fans in Philadelphia hit the boo button
when it was 21-9 and they had a – I think it was a three and out.
And he walked off the field.
No.
No.
Philadelphia never change.
Oh, just the most Philadelphia.
Right?
Who could ever out-Philadelphia them?
Oh, my God.
That's amazing.
Even Jake Tapper's tweeting about it.
He's like, this is grim.
He is?
Yeah, Jake Tapper's a big Eagles fan.
He could just tweet that every day.
Yeah, yeah.
Wow, that's so funny.
He put all the people.
Pull the pot down.
Pull the volume down.
Hold it down.
Anyway.
What's messed up is it wasn't even a recording.
It was just the guy going, boo.
You suck.
Get off the field.
Man, even when things go well for Philadelphia, it's like, oh, not for long.
They won a Super Bowl, but not for long.
Anyway.
That's amazing.
Love you guys.
We'll see you Wednesday.
Have a fantastic start to your week.
And go Steelers.
Always go Steelers.
Go my fantasy team.
