Starting point is 00:01:34 Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Hey, Steve, what you drinking there? It's Timmy's. Wow. It's got some really interesting logoing on it. What could that be? Could it be Roll Up to Win?
Starting point is 00:01:52 Yeah, like $1,000 cash from Rakuten. I'm awfully jealous. I rolled my R's because Jesse can't do it. I'm awfully jealous because they ran out of roll-up-to-win cups at my Tim Hortons. You know what's great is I'm pretty sure I ordered this from the same Tims as you guys. So get wrecked and get good. You know, because here's the thing. It only is on until March 23rd, so get in there and get your cups and get rolling.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Remember, you've got to download the Tims app. And like I said, it's the end of the week that this is all over. That's so soon. You need to drink seven coffees a day and vibrate. So few days. Remember, $1,000 prize from Rakuten. You got sell-off vacations. You got a Volkswagen ID Buzz, which I maintain is one of the coolest electric vehicles on the road.
Starting point is 00:02:32 And Steve's ATV that he's going to use in Ajax. Oh, man. I'm going to just roll over everything. His latest hunting trip. Yes. Because that's Steve. No, no. All right.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Roll up to win on the Tim's app now. Rules apply. Canada only. No purchase necessary. Visit the Tim's app for details. Let's start the show. The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Okay. Is that the start now? No, no. Get into the show. Okay. All right. Fine. Fine.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Hey, so we're here. Woo! Where is here? We could be anywhere, really, because all you're seeing is this. For anybody listening, nothing's changed. Nothing has changed. But this is the first show that the three of us in our 13 seasons, 14 seasons together since a long time, long since months, since years that we have ever done a show inside Scotiabank Arena. Yeah. And we are in a dressing room adjacent to the Leafs dressing room.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Yes. A fake dressing room. It's people dress here. They do dress. It's not to play hockey. Yeah. Talk about this. Yes. This is actually the green room right now. they're using the green room for amazon as you can see if you're watching behind us there's a monday night hockey thing if not you'll just have to imagine it uh but we are a circle we are here to interview john porcelain who obviously our american listeners will know very very well for his time with the whalers and hurricanes and of course some national broadcasts now with the kraken as well but in canada we're just getting to know him and he's an absolute legend in american
Starting point is 00:04:09 hockey uh that canadians have had very little experience with until this season it was so good meeting him a couple weeks ago because we're just like, hey, we're Adam, we're Steve and he's like, cool, great. Here's one of the top ten stories you've ever heard. For no good reason. Can you share that story or are we going to hear it in the interview? No, no, no. He's going to tell the story.
Starting point is 00:04:28 We're setting him up for that one. That's going to be a monster. And that'll air Wednesday. Is that when this interview is going to air? The one we're doing today with Forslund is going to air on Wednesday's show. So everything we're teasing is going to come up on Wednesday's program. That makes sense. Man, you're so good.
Starting point is 00:04:44 yeah that's crazy just you gotta keep organized yeah somebody has somebody somebody has that's what i'm saying i'd be like no just upload all of it you know make it garbage it's a little awkward that we're here but thankfully this room is soundproof and it's awkward that we're here because of how saturday night went for our bungalow the toronto maple leafs and how it's been lately and i i thought about that on the way i talked to natalie about it before i came i was like maybe i need to tell steve to uh but i can't tell steve to what it is soundproofing it is yeah oh that was oh i mean i feel like the doors are but the ceilings for sure oh uh and listen it's you know what it's like you're moving right in there i've
Starting point is 00:05:26 heard what steve thought because i watched lfr right yeah and if you didn't if you didn't get it uh basically if you missed the game uh the leafs lost uh again because they can't score enough goals again now jesse you were at morning skate today they've rejigged the lines before i tell you before i read the lines out what was the mood at skate this morning there was an emphasis by craig brube when we talked to him after morning skate oh no boo it's all his fault oh i can't wait i just i can't wait all right that the team was upset about the loss and now whether you how much you want to believe it you want to like take that as you can at face value or with a grain of salt, no matter how you want to interpret it.
Starting point is 00:06:12 He said it, that the team is upset with how they've been playing. He recognizes they're not playing well. It's not a case of them saying, hey, we're doing the good stuff. We just got to keep plugging away. They know they're doing the wrong things, and they're trying to fix it. That is what's going on. Are you suggesting that perhaps lessons are being learned? No.
Starting point is 00:06:35 I was like, don't, don't. i am not suggesting that because they have not learned the lessons yet they're in the middle of trying to learn the lesson which would be playing better hockey and they know they're not playing well like so they at least they know they don't need steve to yell at them to let them know that they're playing bad that's the one thing about when guys make mistakes on the ice they know they made the mistake when a coach sees a team that doesn't come out for the first 40 minutes of hockey games and then decides to turn it on the last 20 because they're trailing, the coach sees
Starting point is 00:07:08 that. We see that. Everybody sees that. And did Chief talk about that a little bit? He did. He said he's unimpressed with how they've been starting lately and they need to play their game, which is the Craig Berube hockey that he's been trying to teach them how to play. They need to play it for a full 60 minutes. And they haven't been doing it and he acknowledged that they're not doing
Starting point is 00:07:24 it. How much money have the Leafs wasted on getting multiple people to say the same thing? That, see, that is I think where the conversation needs to go because we need to acknowledge that the coach sees what's going on the players know what's going on
Starting point is 00:07:39 but are the players capable of doing the right thing? People start and end the conversation with yeah they keep saying they need to start better and we know they need to start better we all know they need to start better but are the players capable of that? Let's advance the conversation a little further
Starting point is 00:07:55 And what do you think? That's a million dollars After the most part of a decade of them starting late, what do you think the chances are they still going to win? I'm starting to believe the eight years of evidence that maybe they can't. I am not here to pick on the team. I'm not here to pick on people who believe in the team. I believe in the team.
Starting point is 00:08:18 That's the frustrating part, though. Yeah. Because you know they can't. You've seen them. No. Like, no. No. Because these games mean more.
Starting point is 00:08:29 these games down the stretch all the best teams ramp up like we've been singing the praises of florida for so long who are actually not doing so great right now except they beat the leaps but they're actually not doing all that great but they've been on a run of excellent hockey since the stretch of 2023 when they weren't a playoff team they barely made it Bruins are going to beat them in three. And then they came back. They beat them. They padded the Leafs on their bottom.
Starting point is 00:09:07 They padded the Hurricanes on their bottom. And they ended up losing to Vegas. You know what I like to think? What? I like to say the Leafs got further in that playoffs than the Hurricanes did because at least we beat the Florida Panthers. You say whatever you like. You ever like to cope?
Starting point is 00:09:22 Sometimes we got to cope. I think you nailed it, Steve, because... I know. the way this season looks like it's going to play out i am forever going to look at that florida game that happened last thursday as the turning point of the season they came back from that long road trip they squeaked out a win against utah and it's like okay they're tired but they're gonna get up for this florida game they played a tight game and they lost and it wasn't great and then you got your little break you got your day off on friday they they didn't have practice and you're supposed
Starting point is 00:09:51 to get up for the ottawa senators game after losing that tight florida game because nobody just happy that you lost even though you played a tight game you lost on special teams and then they didn't get up for that and that florida game kind of marks the beginning uh the the end of the goodwill that they built up all season long for winning a bunch of games five games they won out of four nations yeah oh yeah we were all happy and then that florida game coming out of that from now until the rest of the season kind of is the turning point of the fan base and and the mood around the Leafs dude um these games mean more they're important and like they there's no uh benefit of the doubt like there are certain teams that you know maybe like like the Avalanche for
Starting point is 00:10:33 example at the beginning of the season we're like man they kind of stink and it's like well do they starters dress basically well yeah like okay so you're injured and also like do you have a goalie and the abs went nope and they traded for two and look at them they're fine they're a-okay they're good enough to come back and our center position stinks how about we go get brock nelson and now and now here we are four games after the deadline or three or whatever it is home perks on the second line again domi's at center again sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that
Starting point is 00:11:15 they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying And that's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly, home repairs, lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning, all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:11:47 Here's the deal. 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled, 700,000 home repairs, 1.5 million moves and counting. Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Can you read it, Adam? Please. So, this is the criticism. They switch the lines once, it doesn't go their way, they don't stick to it.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Can we pat ourselves on the back here for Friday's episode? We almost nailed the lines exactly. Everly Finn nailed it. All they had to do was win. But they've gone back to this. I'd be a lot more puffing my chest out if they won 5-2. If it were. We didn't know how to predict it.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Now, I will say that this is the We Need Goals lineup. The We Need Goals lineup is as follows. Nyes, Matthews, Marner, Holmberg, Tavares, Nylander, McMahon, Domi, Robertson, Lorenz, Lawton, Yarncrow, Kompf is sitting, McDavid, McDavid. Yeah, no, McCabe, Tanev, Riley, Carlo, Benoit, Ekman, Larson. For all the changes they've made up front, they haven't done a lick on the back end. No, and that's...
Starting point is 00:13:38 Those are your six guys. That is next. Yeah, you can move some of those guys. I do want to have a chat about one Morgan Riley, but the first, though, is Scott Lawton, and this is already making the rounds on Twitter. The lineup was announced like an hour and a half ago, and people were like,
Starting point is 00:13:52 they gave up a first-round pick and a prospect, and it's already unacceptable. I'm like, okay. They also tried him on the second line. There were many reasons why I wasn't, like, jacked about Scott Lawton coming to Toronto for what the price was going to be. I think Scott Lawton coming to Toronto is a positive. I think Scott Lawton being a leader is amazing.
Starting point is 00:14:10 No, this was one of those years. Hey, do you want this guy? Sure. Oh, what's the price? Oh, Jesus, no. And so, you know, yeah, it's important to have that third line center, right? Yeah. Really important.
Starting point is 00:14:21 And, hey, listen. Wait, which line? Third line center. Yeah. but now he's on the fourth and people are upset about it and you've given up for banking and the first to get them you did get retention though so only one and a half million banking so what do let's start there what does that say um okay so i think as leaf fans we keep trying to be like all right what did the 2023 team do right and how do we replicate that and i think that's wrong on
Starting point is 00:14:49 account of they won five games yeah um that's our great benchmark to go back to they're they're button mashing right now and and that's okay that's okay a team that didn't win a series but they punch so above their weight uh they shouldn't have won a single game that that's what this roster reminds me of is the 2017 playoff lineup they oh their decor against the capitals right just terrible on the president's trophy winning capitals like the leaf shouldn't have won a single game it went six games five of them went to overtime all six decided by one goal and the way the leafs got by in that series was rolling four lines something this team hasn't been able to do for a very long time they can roll four lines with this lineup um you would imagine that
Starting point is 00:15:40 But the Leafs would have an easier time rolling four lines if they split Matthews, Barner, and Nylander up onto three different lines. But this is a way to – this is their attempt, I think, at having their cake and eating it too because they're kind of stacking. But it's also a pretty deep lineup. I mean, there's no weakness at center. I was very unimpressed with Holmberg at center. And, like, this – almost all season he's played wing.
Starting point is 00:16:10 I don't know what the percentage is, but I would say two-thirds, just guessing, eyeballing it. It's weird that there's still this fidgety with a lineup this deep into the season that they've added to. So I think the thing about the lineup is that it works, how you outlined it. It works in theory, yes, but Saturday you try the thing that we've been asking them to try forever,
Starting point is 00:16:39 and that's splitting up the guys it doesn't work once and you run away from it is that the right mentality to have shouldn't you try it more than one game it's the same thing with willie at center i i laughed i laughed so hard when anybody believed it was going to happen this season again out of training camp and it lasted zero seconds because if they do that again like in september i'm boycotting them i'm doing flames videos that's how i felt this this september so wolf They tried it on Saturday, this new lineup, and then they immediately abandoned it come Monday. Is that the right thing to do? No.
Starting point is 00:17:14 I think you've got to give it a little bit of a runway, and they didn't. I'm specifically talking about the part of splitting up Matthews, Marner, and Nylander. Because Nylander looked great on his own. I thought Marner was okay. He had a good game. And Austin was okay as well. Very average. It was okay, which isn't Austin Matthews' standard.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And he scored a goal, but like... it was on nobody i mean yeah anyone could have could have scored that goal flying into the net but it was but hey domi matthews combined for a goal and their first line did there were so many moments during because i streamed that game i was just like but but it's in like i just had no idea what was so it didn't work in the sense of like they won or anything but i think it works in the sense of that's ideally how you want things to play out the guys separated yeah i oh gosh i i think it's a tricky thing for the coach and the coach is trying to win games and he held on longer than most leaf fans gave him credit they're like ah it's gonna be like eight nine minutes into the
Starting point is 00:18:15 game he's gonna go away from it it wasn't until it was like the end of the second maybe the beginning of the third after two bad periods yeah like separating babcock the guy from babcock the coach like one decision he made that wasn't all that popular at the time but like you kind of got to do those things with with the leaf team that he had just full of rookies the leafs had a 4-1 lead over detroit in the centennial classic red wings make it 4-3 final minute he throws nothing but kids out there and his justification for it was like well you got to see if they can do it like you you got to put them in these positions and was that when hunwick was on like the poster Dude, it was Hunwick, Bozak, Komarov, and Riley.
Starting point is 00:19:00 No, that was the next year when they were in the Navy game. It might have been both. It might have been Hainsey replacing Hunwick. Oh, okay. I thought it was on that team. You're right, you're right. I don't know, man. Depressing when those are the guys you've got to use to market the game.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Bless Lou. Bless sweet baby Lou. I just, I wish, like, okay, if this is what you're trying, let them try in their most desperate moments they need they need a goal here and then what what is what's kind of discouraging about that is they didn't score when they abandon it and that they're punishing the same group the same top six by putting them back by rewarding them I think you've landed on the thing. It didn't work all season long.
Starting point is 00:19:52 That's why they tried something new on Saturday. That didn't work. So then they go back to the thing that didn't work for 65 games. I guess they were getting depth scoring from McMahon and Robertson. That's what they're saying. McMahon's disappeared. It's so disappointing. But here's – so what were their two goals?
Starting point is 00:20:10 Matthew's goal is just it's not repeatable. Domi bowling balled his way into the net After Olmark misplayed the puck If you're a goalie Ten the goal You almost got it You almost got it, Linus Oh my god
Starting point is 00:20:26 And Mikey Stevens had him in fantasy and beat me It was just a great weekend for me It was just a great weekend for me The first goal, what was the first goal? You guys remember? Give it to us It was William Nylander going, screw it, I'm doing it on my own He held that puck for the most magical amount of time.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Yes! Him just going through the zone, just all dipsy-dooling around, and then he ends with a goal. Like, I was talking on Friday about how he's most effective when he has the puck on his stick, and that was a prime example of that. And I love, I love those William Nylander goals. I do too, but the go-to-the-net goals, the deflection goals, the banging goals, he scored it from, yeah, he went to the net.
Starting point is 00:21:06 He went to the net through his own power, his own skating ability. When we see those special plays, I go, hot damn, that was amazing. And I don't know if that's repeatable. Second in the league in goal scoring. For certain players, it is repeatable. For guys at that upper echelon, I'm saying Willie should be on his own line doing that every night. What I'm looking for, though, out of this team is something they can reliably do that's going to go in on occasion. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:21:34 What this lineup tonight, and I don't know, you can nod your head or laugh depending on what happens, but I think it's designed to bring out the bottom six more and make them an option. Because now you have four lines that can score. And I'm glad Berube saw something that I could have swore I saw, which was the fourth line that they had coming out of the deadline. I'm like, this isn't anything. This is three men. this is just three random men like uh you got to have an identity or or something and the leafs
Starting point is 00:22:11 identity used to be that you could score from anywhere um or score in any situation you could score any way and over the years it's eroded to a four guy score some of the time and that's just not an identity um so hopefully the top six it can at very least break even and then the bottom six can actually pull their weight like this this is a lineup i don't mind them playing at home you know you can insulate domi robertson mcmahon which i'm sorry you have to we've seen enough evidence that you have to fourth line is an option to score now i still don't i still don't love holmberg second line left wing adam you you did agent provocateur with alan i did and still do and he talked about max patch ready yes yeah sorry i meant an episode recently what's the deal well i
Starting point is 00:23:11 don't know you're asking me to how does it leak information like that to me i want to know if he's an option to come back he was he was skating with hockinpah before yanni hockinpah and max patch ready we're on the ice before morning skate this morning it'd be great to get tavaris and patch ready back together i agree with you on that steve that what's the deal oh i don't know that went always um agents can't talk about that stuff right they can't talk about a counterpoint did you do like any winking no it's a counterpoint on the lineup decision you're talking about getting bottom six scoring yep i think having william nylander within the bottom six if you want to categorize it like that or having
Starting point is 00:23:51 Mitch and Tavares technically as the third line or whatever. I think spreading the guys out creates depth. What is it, though, that only Willie can? Why is it only Willie that does? Why is it only that Austin and Mitch got to play together? I think it's the same question. I do think the
Starting point is 00:24:07 quotes that, again, I think people are, you know, the heat is on Mitch again because of the contract situation and what happened to the trade deadline and Mikko Rantanen could have been a leaf and all of that stuff. right none of that's mitch's fault man that that is that is from from from on high but when i look at the the way that these they've they've structured this every single time it it's
Starting point is 00:24:30 incumbent on somebody to drive their own line austin does it john tavaris sometimes is asked to do it really for sure really for sure is asked to do it like well they imagine like last season when they put uh matthews between bertuzzi and domey he's driving that line right you think yeah But it's funny because when we saw it in November with Matthews out. Mitch did it for a month. And he was good at it. And I'm trying to figure out why they haven't gone back to that. Can I offer, I don't know about words of encouragement for Mitch,
Starting point is 00:25:00 but I wonder if the reason they're stapling him to Matthews is because there's something, there are things Matthews is struggling to do right now. who knows why i don't know it could be anything i don't know um and mitch has to do them like i wonder if part of the reason mitch is there is mitch has to do a little bit more work right right and that that whole you know domi bertuzzi uh fun chaos beavis and butthead line dude i loved that line it was so good but like that's you know that was those two playing with guy who scored 69 goals last year and he's just on that guy right now and like that's okay that's okay like you know you know I sort of gave it to Mitch for the the quote about like well you know
Starting point is 00:25:51 they want us to get points every night but we're playing great defense like that that was that was what I praised Matthews for at the four nation uh is you know the goals weren't going in for him but he was playing impeccable defense I'm not I'm still even though the results are somewhat the same i'm not watching the same person like i'm not watching the same person i watched three weeks ago um at the four nation face-off well the jump the pop whatever it is is not there the reason i brought up mitch's quote was to contrast it with nize's quote again pre-game and he said well we could be better too this happens often if you're paying attention you know mitch tries that i don't know maybe it's a veteran thing the even keel everything's fine everything's fine don't worry
Starting point is 00:26:35 about it and then you ask anyone else and they're like yeah man this is pretty bad well no but he said he said listen we can bring up our game we could be better and so you know like okay we couple that with all the guys were pissed off about what happened against ottawa i would hope so i would hope that you're mad i would sometimes that's all fans want to hear yeah like i because that's the thing in in previous years like dubas will never give you that he'll never give you that because maybe it's a good thing all our defensemen are injured or or actually you're wrong your eyes are lying to you cody cc was awesome all season um you know like that that sort of stuff they can they can you know that can be frustrating i think that's created the
Starting point is 00:27:17 frustration and i think sometimes fans have to have that sort of um uh that sort of like hey am i seeing are we seeing the same stuff here right right so i don't feeling the same thing like you're not even upset like dude like just anecdotally talking to a lot of league fans who aren't necessarily chronically online like the rest of us they're watching these games going i don't think they care which i don't think is true i don't think it's true either but it listen people's feelings are relevant yeah yeah relevant are relevant i realize those jumbled together that reality what are you doing here that that is how a lot of leaf fans uh feel about the team so so having your anger or frustration or whatever it is validated i think goes a long way so so
Starting point is 00:28:09 then i want to go to the defense here for a sec feels good to say that in this building so you got mccabe mccabe tanf has been solid as a rock all year long you know sure i you know they've been really really good some of the top defensive pairing minutes and obviously both have been injured at various points, and I think since Tanev's been back, they've been a little clunky, but I think they'll get that back. I'm not worried about that. McCabe tried to do a bit too much against Florida. Yeah, and that's
Starting point is 00:28:33 fine. McCabe's been so solid. Yeah, it's rare. Benoit Ekman-Larsen doesn't work, but it's going again tonight. One thing that I am convinced is not work, and I'm eye-testing it all the way here, is in set... Actually, I've got real numbers
Starting point is 00:28:49 for you. You've got natural stature cup. I had to show them where to get it. I kept going to another site, and I'm like, this is garbage. And I'm like, this is garbage. No, I went to another site. It was really bad. Natural stat. They got the goods.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Riley and Carlo have played on the ice, five on five, 46-34 together. 46 minutes total. Their goals for are three. Their goals against are three. What scares me a little bit is the expected goals for. which is 1.59 when they're on the ice now two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk
Starting point is 00:29:43 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. You've got to try breakfast at A&W. You've got to try breakfast at A&W. And what better way than with a delicious Pret organic coffee, starting at just $1 all day, every day, now until December 31st. You gotta try breakfast at A&W. At participating A&W locations in Ontario. Their expected goals against is also low, but are we not a little worried about that?
Starting point is 00:30:32 No. Because Morgan Rielly is supposed to be the offensive defenseman. Yeah. And he's not been. And this is what brings me back to, is there, I mean, were him and O.E., I didn't check him and O.E.L.'s stats before this, But were they that bad together that they can't do an all-off? Like, if we're going to do a Tanev McCabe, why can't we do an OEL Riley? Riley's already off the power play, right?
Starting point is 00:30:54 Then that makes Carlo Benoit. And I think, dude, Benny is losing me. Yeah, I liked him last year. OEL is losing me too, man. He's in the box way too often. That game featured two penalties because the refs decided we're not calling anything. Oh, no, no, we're calling that one. like there are a few guys i pointed this out early in the season using ben was the reference
Starting point is 00:31:19 where like i'm not convinced they get out there and watch the games i think they're out there looking for three or four different numbers and they're like uh number two did some refs yeah oh yeah yeah oh we always got a tight whistle did some throwing yeah but i think those six guys on the back end those are your six guys like you're going high stick in the face you're going into the playoffs with those guys and it's just a matter of what combination you want because i don't think myers cracks uh benoit spot so it's just those six guys it's about figuring out how to maneuver those parents i think you're wrong you think myers gets in i think jesse what what you know they they call arenas affectionately they call them barns but but but the true connoisseurs
Starting point is 00:32:07 They call them places of worship. They call them cathedrals. And I think, hallelujah, it's a miracle. Yanni Hockenpott, game one. I'm not kidding. I am not kidding. Matty, get the jersey on. Game one.
Starting point is 00:32:24 Let's go. I'm telling you he's playing. Game one, I don't know. Game one, I don't know. I'm telling you he's playing. If he could get a couple regular season games, then I can see it. But that's an LTIR thing, isn't it? They might have.
Starting point is 00:32:37 I haven't looked. I don't have. I don't know. I heard Puck beat it in front of me, so I don't know if they can fit him. Okay, so here's my next question. He's playing game one. Leafs. Let's say.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Okay, so the Leafs schedule this week is tonight, Calgary. Wednesday, Avalanche. Thursday, Rangers who are in a playoff spot. I told you guys the Rangers are making the playoffs. Cool. And the Predators, the sad, sad Predators on Saturday, which is that scary for a Leaf fan. That doesn't scream domination game to me.
Starting point is 00:33:03 They get four out of four. colorado new york and lose about five one okay on saturday night if the leafs win three of the next four how much does next monday show change compared to this monday show a lot because they will have won instead of lost like well and and then and so my my follow-up to that immediately sorry sorry sorry is is because because here's the problem when they were winning games in certain jan in january no i understand why you said that it was very funny at some point they're going to have to look like the better team well that and and and they're going to have to score more than two goals that too so is it going to be oh well they beat calgary to nothing i don't know
Starting point is 00:33:43 that anyone's going to feel all that confident after that it'd be great for wall point it doesn't matter i think don't you need to score more if you win one nothing there's a little calming of the fan base regardless of how you win a win does it tonight okay going forward like if we're talking about how they look in the playoffs i'm concerned like just looking at a lot of two and three goal results here if they if they win eight nothing tonight i'm still concerned about going into the playoffs because of what they've shown us over the last week in a bit or so since four nations like they had some good games but lately they haven't been great so i feel like a win calms the fan base but long term still some concern about a deep run yeah yeah of course but like
Starting point is 00:34:24 i'm looking okay so you got dustin wolf you got mckenzie blackwood who you cut up recently you You've got Igor Shosturkin, maybe. Then you've got Yussi Saros, who... Not good this year. Not good this year, but he is generally a good goalie. You've got to start making some goalies look like crap. Like, please. Please, for the love of God.
Starting point is 00:34:43 You're good at doing it against the Rangers. Sometimes. Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes. It's going to be in New York. It'll be nice to get a grudge match against Colorado at home with that. You know, it was pretty high scoring when we... It was a great game.
Starting point is 00:34:55 A week and a half ago, whatever it was. Great game you shouldn't have lost. like everyone needs to to pull up their socks like maybe we're focusing way too much on the five on five and their penalty kill sucks yeah 30th in the league since january 17th i believe in that and somebody asked me i think it was mark dumont who's who works at tsn uh in um in montreal he's like why did they pick january 17th i'm like i think maximum effect but yeah that's when they are the worst from that's when it started a crater they they uh lose a one goal game against florida and i still think florida was was way stop one of those sam bennett power
Starting point is 00:35:31 play goals you allow two power play goals that look pretty much well maybe not identical but like same sort of play same flavor and then um the ottawa game was a two penalty game one because the refs were forced and uh they scored you didn't that's the beginning middle and ends and welcome to every series against boston you know uh at at some point you know i i think it's weird to me because they have great penalty killers like it's weird that they're this cool and they've been so good it's it's an inverse of what we usually see people are they're missing it because they're like oh the power play the power play's gone cold for like the last i don't know week but since i know christmas it's it's a top 10 it's very very good the penalty kill was top 10 maybe even top
Starting point is 00:36:24 five all season and they're dying tell me then prioritize it at the deadline tell me then why it's not berube that people should be criticized well because i know i i know why i believe it shouldn't be uh i don't i have no criticisms ridiculous the way i asked that question was though like i'm an angry twitter account looking for somebody to blame and i'm posting a picture of Craig Roubaix and going fraud which is something I actually saw this week and I'm like that is a Stanley Cup winning coach that's a guy who wrote that's a guy who played a thousand games in the league so tell me why did he really yeah oh yeah tell me tell me why you're looking at Roubaix and you're going uh this is not this is not the issue uh because you need something and
Starting point is 00:37:06 it's obviously the coach but like all season long we've been like Lane Lambert hell of a job with the PK. Mark Savard, boo! And then it gets the complete flip. Right. So why isn't it Lane Lambert's fault now, is what I would say. I would love to be a fly on the wall for
Starting point is 00:37:25 the coach's room decision to sit David Kampf because he was a part of that. He's a defensive black hole. Sorry, offensive black hole. I mean, he's both, I guess. That's a defensive black hole. That's where you go. That's a good thing.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Yeah, because he sucks up everything. You are the CEO of nothing. We put you out there and go out there, queen, give us nothing. So the decision to sit him. The decision to sit him completely changes your PK. But you obviously got Lawton for that role. You have Yarncroke. You have Yarncroke.
Starting point is 00:38:03 You have Marner. Matthews, I don't know the numbers, but just, like, me visually going, okay, that's who was on the ice, that's who was on the ice, that's who was on the ice. Matthews is getting killed on the PK. Well, that's what we were talking about last episode. Stop putting him out there. There's times to cut back Matthews' minutes and save him,
Starting point is 00:38:23 and the PK is it. Like, that's when you don't want to play Austin Matthews, and they keep running him out there for a minute at a time. And, like, Mitch is the constant. And, like, he does that enough that you... He's objectively elite, too. You can be pretty confident it's not him Alright, so
Starting point is 00:38:40 Carlos had a few moments But he just got here We know how we like to play that Listen, I would like to see them Take four penalties tonight And kill them all But yeah, so Bring a comp out of the lineup
Starting point is 00:38:56 You're forced to use Matthews more in the PK Could you not use Could you not use Who could you use? You can use Lawton, obviously, to take face-offs. Who else can you use? I'm surprised they never use Tavares. Guy wins face-off.
Starting point is 00:39:13 They never even try him. They don't even really have a guy who's like Hyman, who took a wild amount of face-offs for a dude who never played one game of center for the Leafs. But they're like, on the PK, they're like, you're center. You're right. Right? So could Nyes be that guy one day?
Starting point is 00:39:31 He ain't. I guess it's Holmberg. Yep. It could be Yarncroak. You have options there. To answer your question, why not Berube? Maybe it is. Maybe it's a little bit him.
Starting point is 00:39:46 Why I'm sick to my stomach with that is I think he's way down the list. This team has fired the coach twice with the same core. They have fired the GM. They've gotten new assistant GMs. they've gotten they've gone through how many assistant coaches who run the PK they've gone through how many assistant coaches who run the power play they've gone through how many guys who play on the second third and fourth line they've gone through how many defensemen they've gone through how many goalies guys do not make me spell it out come on it's the same issues
Starting point is 00:40:28 year after year they're not scoring and their special teams are letting them down and who's here who's been around the whole time baruba if the leafs are the kings of we just got here and we're refusing to acknowledge the dudes who have been here the whole time yeah riley's the only guy he's the only guy who's been here the whole time you know what throw him in the in the garbage well i mean wiley coyote i have to be honest i i acme cliff there there is a guy like if people are complaining that they need more from matthews i think it's pretty symbolic that that riley's been taken off the power play that has gotten zero talk but it is but it's done well it's but it's done well and then they've taken them off the top unit they've taken off the top
Starting point is 00:41:11 unit and they put him and oel out there on the second unit i think that's a big deal taken off the top unit considering the leafs top unit plays a minute 40 of every two minutes on the power play The forward just kind of works. Of course. And they have the forward depth to do it. Yeah. I get that. So then, okay, so what are you going to do five on five to augment the offense?
Starting point is 00:41:29 And what I'm not seeing from him are the plays where he is intelligently rushing it to a point, passing it to a guy. I'm just not seeing the confidence this year. It is worth saying that the Leafs breakout sucks. He's the breakout guy. Or should be. they they have guys throughout the lineup who ought to be able to do it him oel mccabe's i mean can fire darts yep uh up the ice and it's a good passer really good that's not bad at all no like
Starting point is 00:42:00 i don't understand like i know the leafs decor is not scoring a lot um but like generally i don't look at them like oh man they're completely incapable no their their breakout sucks and that's not just their D that's how their centers play that's they're they're the second on every puck everywhere every they're not good at dump and chase and all they play is dump and chase no but even in their own end on their own end in their own but that's that's where it starts in Florida to me was the greatest example of that puck is in the Leafs and Leafs are just gliding in there and the Panthers and they and they get in there and even when the Leafs were able to escape it they advance the puck up the ice uh let's say it ends up on the stick of a player in the neutral
Starting point is 00:42:48 zone wow someone's right there so you gotta dump it and then no one's even close it's not dumping chase it's dumping change that's that's it and you're not gonna you're just not gonna win anything you have problems with morgan's play specifically in all facets i think he's been a letdown this year and i don't like to say that because he is personality wise one of my favorite maple leafs I think I will never forget how amazing he was in that one series that they've won in this era. He was outstanding, unbelievable. You know, he had a 70 point season. But remember, that was a long time ago.
Starting point is 00:43:24 This is a long this is what have you done for me lately? That's what this sport is. And so as much as I like Morgan, the man, as much as I like what he's done for the Leafs, my question is, what exactly do you do here? And this is what I was trying to illustrate is power play when, well, they put him on power play, too. Okay, well, what kind of production are we expecting out of Domi and who else is usually on the second power play unit? Robertson. Robertson.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Domi, Robertson, McMahon, OEL, Riley. McMahon, for sure. How much are they really expecting? Are they expecting that unit to go out there and win them a Stanley Cup? I don't think so. And so, okay. That'd be cool. It'd be awesome.
Starting point is 00:43:59 But, I mean, Ryan Reeves. They're allowed. Keep going down the checklist. So then we got, okay, then we got your five-on-five work because you don't kill penalties because we've acknowledged that Morgan Riley's defense is not the strongest. and that's always been he kills penalties so i don't know how much but it's not any like it's not like his bag right he's not top guy so i'm wondering okay five on five dude what are we doing
Starting point is 00:44:19 five on five i like carlo a lot i liked him a lot in boston i think he's done really well here his numbers support that his advanced numbers i think is his corsi on his own is like 60 since coming here of course you four there's sometimes you i don't know you just feel it don't turn on this Okay. On Riley? No, on Carlo. No, no, he's great. No, I'm looking down the barrel of the camera.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Who's turning on Brian Carlo? I've seen like, oh, I don't know if that was the move. Stop it. You're wrong. Stop it. Same with Lawton. I'm on watch. On watch, sure.
Starting point is 00:44:51 I'm on watch with Carlo. I like him a lot. Might be a lemon. No. Stop it. No. Stop. Sour.
Starting point is 00:44:59 Lemon makes things more delicious. A little sour in my mouth. You can't put him on fraud watch, though. No, no, not that far. Only trash players get put on Fraud Watch. Connor Hellefraud. You know what? At the beginning of next season, Jesse, just as an aside,
Starting point is 00:45:13 you're going to have to do a top ten players on Jesse's Fraud Watch. Okay. Just for the channel. Connor McDivitt. Connor McDivitt. There you go. Same page, Steve. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:45:23 Connor Hellefraud again. That's going to be my favorite hour-long video of all time. Leon Dreisaitl. No, but we're talking about Riley here. About Riley. I wonder. What's the role now? What's the role?
Starting point is 00:45:33 You're running down the list of role with Riley, And if it's not the PP, if it's so-so PK, and then five on five, he's struggling. Plus, he's not the number one defenseman that they're paying him to be because they're not paying a $12 million defenseman or anything. Nobody's getting paid. There's no Victor Hedman. There's no Hedman. There's no McCarr. There's no Quinn Hughes.
Starting point is 00:45:54 There's nobody in that position on the Leafs. So Riley's been defaulted to that. But $7 million also in the new cap era isn't that much. But also, that's the role he was paid for at the time, you know, is be their big guy. So you wonder if there's an opportunity to reallocate that money this summer. I don't know if it's possible because there's no trade clause, but the way it's trending right now is not good because as you're outlining here,
Starting point is 00:46:19 his role here isn't the role that you want for that player. We've had 65, 66 games to figure out a role for him, and we still don't have it. So at what point are we going to say this is an issue? Can I point out another consistency with this team? Derogatory. um every year we get to around this time and we're talking about how beat up they look beat up and tired they look and that's part of uh you know maybe ryan o'reilly was right
Starting point is 00:46:46 like they just they gotta de-emphasize these guys because like okay let's go through who's playing their best hockey of the season right now william neal and okay it's not even his best If you want to stray too far from Morgan Riley, I just wanted to talk about that. No, he's part of it. Morgan Riley. Is he playing his best hockey of the season? No. No.
Starting point is 00:47:09 Matthews. No. No. Mitch Marner. No. I actually think he's probably the best hockey of his career, just not lately. On the season? Yeah, on the season.
Starting point is 00:47:20 Since Four Nations? No. Hell no. William Nylander. Mostly yes. He's playing pretty good. Pretty even. Tavares.
Starting point is 00:47:27 I don't know how you can complain about a guy who's second in league goal scoring. No, Tavares is a little up and down, but I'd say overall, okay. I think he's pretty even. I think he's pretty even. So that's two of five. It's not good enough. It's not good enough. Well, okay.
Starting point is 00:47:41 Well, it doesn't have to be those guys. Well, then who is it? It kind of does have to be those guys, right? Yes, it does. Because that's how it's designed. With the season long, they're not playing at their best. They're getting tired right now kind of thing. Morgan for the excuse for
Starting point is 00:47:57 I don't even call it an excuse but the reasoning we gave to his play for the first four months of the season was new family, new baby Dude it's hard. It's a hard life. It's freaking hard man. It is hard and that's gone by the wayside. Let's not
Starting point is 00:48:13 forget new system. And then yes I think that's a really big underrated part of this whole thing is that he is not comfy at all playing the style of hockey that berube wants him to play and he's admitted it that's been an adjustment i i'm trying to think like who were the big great new jersey next year oh who are the big offensive producers from the back end for berube in st louis that's who i'm trying to think of well petrangelo petrangelo
Starting point is 00:48:41 petrangelo uh bless morgan like yeah he's not that yeah no uh i would imagine that that well pareko was there during the cup run but like he's just a very solid defenseman not exactly like offensive uh justin falk but like he's all offense all the time i think scandela was there for a bit who else vince dunn wasn't even in the lineup wouldn't even play him they gave him away to seattle whoops it's not a role that really the brewery system has if i fear a goaltender 10 the goal if you're a defender defend play defense yeah it is i i think the way he looks at it like give me 10 of mccable paint you a mona lisa maybe morgan's not the right guy if the coach is sticking around maybe morgan's not the right guy to have for god's sake he just like they're
Starting point is 00:49:28 what are you what are you gonna do fire exactly tory krug too tory krug oh yeah tory krug but he's been out most of the year yeah i was like i know there's somebody else nick letty's there but he's not no no right so i think at the end of the day like it's it's about an organizational fit and i don't know if it's there anymore and it's been what 12 happy years as long he's been in this organization from the day he got drafted 13 like it just might be it just might have been something they've outgrown how has he been here this long that's so crazy yeah yeah well it's because he was for many many years the only option they had and uh and i think you know the way that the defense has sort of shifted and i think it will continue to shift this summer like people
Starting point is 00:50:11 are like oh they don't have to do anything on defense i'm i actually think that they do well i think that there are moves to be made and i i wouldn't be shocked if that was a conversation that popped up it's stable i mean at the end of the day they can't score goals uh they have goaltending they have defenders locked up if you can't score goals uh it's not the worst position to be in that you can remake your whole forward group and i mean remake it they're gonna probably need to building through free agency scares me yeah still hello nashville hello oh boy well hey listen when you don't have any other choice you take what you're doing the worst option yeah well look what boston did last year it worked out great for them uh okay so we'll leave the lease for now
Starting point is 00:50:54 but listen when we reconvene on wednesday if things have gone right for the leafs against calgary and you're happy what does happiness look like guys a win just oh just a win because i think we said you said it earlier you said if they've lost nothing long-term decisions like about the leafs's future can't change with tonight's game but if it what what they could do is go in against a white hot goalie or a red hot goalie and build some confidence right build some confidence against this guy what does that look like and obviously we did a whole segment on friday show about how great dustin wolf is so you already know we love him this this is the lineup the the leafs lineup tonight this is the team to do it against calgary we went through it last show our last in like
Starting point is 00:51:40 every non-dustin wolf stat yeah and you're not an exaggeration no and on a day's rest at home third game of a of a homestand with last change and a deep four-line lineup for god's sakes you should be able to run this over and if they don't oh boy yeah i'm gonna be pretty worried heading into wednesday these guys are professional athletes now's not the time to not have your legs because they gave you friday off you played saturday they gave you sunday off it was scheduled day off sunday off you got you got sunday off too you skated this morning you should have your legs back like the road trip was last tuesday utah was you're like you came back home for that thursday the game you should be good now well i expect you to recovery that recover that quick words mean
Starting point is 00:52:29 something craig berube was like they're pissed off okay there's bing bang bang bang like how many more uh this game means something to them as well i think you gotta just a win great you went two one in the shootout whatever i think you gotta run them over uh and listen it's the nhl all the teams are really good uh hey if being on the road is literal poison as we've discovered recently you should kill these guys we'll see how many goals does nasm cadre score tonight none whoa joseph wool by the way he's starting so he's had a bit of a shaky go lately uh it'd be nice he's a good goalie of course he's a good goal he's a good goalie he was good last game How many guys on this team played with Nas?
Starting point is 00:53:23 Riley, Matthews, Marner, Corfant, Willie, Tavares. So the whole Corfant, yeah. And that's it, right? Probably just those guys. Yeah, everybody else is different. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:53:37 It's a situation where I hope on Wednesday's show we're going, okay, okay, so that was a good builder game. Now we've got to play Colorado and New York. And then, yeah, they win 5-1. And then Friday we're like, yay, they won them all. No. How insane? No.
Starting point is 00:53:51 No! No! All right. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. Starting point is 00:56:16 i already mentioned this and i think it's important to mention that our good friends uh the new york rangers are in a playoff spot as of this weekend and what's more interesting about it is the Montreal Canadiens are a point out. Shoo! So many things need to happen for this to happen. Montreal has two games in hand, too. All seven Canadian teams could make it. It's unlikely.
Starting point is 00:56:43 I kind of want to see it. The Leafs would have to make it. Yes, the Penguins fans were musing this weekend that at 66 points, they're only six points out, which is enormous at this stage. It's real. But they have a 2% chance of winning, and everybody's like, you're saying there's a chance. Buffalo is still not eliminated from a playoff spot.
Starting point is 00:57:06 How far back is Buffalo? Only San Jose is eliminated. Like, are you saying, oh, they are 58 to 72. You do this every time. I'm going to take the points that they're going to get for the rest of the season. I'm going to take the over. this is this is carried on from literally pre-season of you picking everybody's over
Starting point is 00:57:27 to now where you're like you know what they might make the playoffs you know what the their games their games matter the interesting the interesting thing though is watching the Boston Bruins sink the way that they have they lost two over the weekend they are now third last in goal differential in the eastern conference third last behind only the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. I need the Leafs to start winning some games so I can enjoy this. I know, right? We've waited so many years.
Starting point is 00:57:55 You can't enjoy Boston's downfall if the Leafs are also falling. We've waited so many years for this downfall, and now you're going to stink? Stop it. Let me enjoy this. I thought it was interesting that I guess he's just skating, but they had Charlie McAvoy out on the ice skating two times, I think, the last couple of days before practices.
Starting point is 00:58:10 I was like, are they really going to bring him back? Maybe he's just skating because he wants to stay healthy and everything, wants to get back into shape and all that. But I hope they don't bring him back for this. Dude, he might be their new captain. Yeah, but next year. Next year, but have him around the guys and everything. Totally, but don't bring him back in a game.
Starting point is 00:58:27 I don't know. I feel like, if I remember correct, Lindholm is done. Hampus Lindholm. McAvoy, I feel like... It's a patella, I think. McAvoy's week to week. So it's not astounding that he's back. It's not like, oh man, he repaired a torn Achilles in two weeks.
Starting point is 00:58:44 you know but you remember out of four nations when he went to the hospital because minnesota's medical staff uh bumble fucked everything and now he's week to week but i saw him skating i was like is he coming back for this this team that's just falling down the standings but i don't know you're competitive you want to play all the time i do want to say i know i know we think the top end of the western conference is stronger and i think there's a pretty good argument for that west versus east but i will say that when you look at the capitals erasure yeah well that's what i'm saying is you also you look at the the bottom end of the western conference and they are just so much worse than the bottom end of the east uh like i'm looking at gold differentials the san jose
Starting point is 00:59:20 sharks uh where we will be next monday uh we got to talk about the ticket packages we do we have minus 77 in gold differential compare and contrast with in the in the eastern conference the worst you can get is a minus 48 from the pens um and then and i look at i look at the wild card both teams in the wild card are in the double digit negatives and goal differential that's the minnesota wild with a negative 10 they've had a lot of injuries vancouver canucks disaster they've had them uh they've just had a rough year but they're still hanging on in that playoff spot one team to look out for the st louis blues they're at a neutral zero exact zero goal differential and they are tied in points but a game they played an extra game over vancouver so st louis could
Starting point is 01:00:03 sneak in again we we steve what would you trade braden shen for i wouldn't i'd hold on don't make it why are they bittington's been on fire what are you yeah oh my god he's been amazing he was booty heading into the four nation he's the one guy that's played better since four nation everybody else has been everyone's been and nathan mckinnon because he's not of this world since february 1st the st louis blue avalanche guys since february 1st the st louis blues have the third most total points in the entire National Hockey League. Amazing. Can you name me the two teams who have
Starting point is 01:00:39 more points than the Blues since February 1st? I'm going to go the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Steve? The Lightning and the Habs. Both of you nailed the Lightning. They have the most points
Starting point is 01:00:55 of any team since February 1st. They have to. Second most points? The Los Angeles Kings. They've been on a tear. By the way, I know we're in the Monday Night Hockey set here. What? Their last game is going to be a Monday, which is Edmonton, L.A., and it's looking more and more like that first round is going to happen again.
Starting point is 01:01:15 Is that going to be one of those eight-game series? Well, I think it's going to be Bakersfield versus the Ontario Reign. Yeah, but just the goons. Yeah, get out there and fight. also correction it's it's the kings tied with the blues they both have 23 plus the avalanche and jets also have 23 so bunch of teams tied at 23 but kings second most points oh habs i was close 13th yeah no no no really they've been good recently yeah eight five eight five and two good for the habs happy for their fans it's gonna be a fun time uh something else that happened over
Starting point is 01:01:50 the weekend that kind of caught my eye was conor bedard getting a second 10 minute misconduct in a And this comes after Jason Dickinson hit Phillip Hedl, which means Phillip Hedl is on concussion watch again, which is brutal for that player. Kiefer Sherwood decided to kick off Bertuzzi Moore 2.0. Months and months are going to pass, and you're going to forget about it, and they're not going to, and it's going to blow up next season, and you're going to be real confused.
Starting point is 01:02:22 Maybe they play each other again before the end of the year. I don't know. No, no, they don't. They don't. That's why he's like, we're getting them next year. Okay, but so with Bedard, I've never seen a first overall pick get two 10-minute misconducts in games in a row in a regular season. And I think it speaks to where the Blackhawks are right now,
Starting point is 01:02:42 which is not in a good place. I also think it speaks to the complete lack of preparation any NHL official puts into any hockey game. Last year, I think it was Adam Fantilli, Someone committed an infraction against him. I don't remember what it was. And Fantilli said to the ref, oh, actually, he didn't do that. It was kissing on the ice.
Starting point is 01:03:06 Two minutes. Two minutes for smooching. And he said he didn't actually smooch me. They're like, no smooching. No, he didn't give me the tongue. And the ref goes, you go to the box. And Adam Fantilli goes, why? And the ref goes, because you're new in the league
Starting point is 01:03:19 and haven't signed a stick for me yet. That's not really what he said for anybody looking to sue us. Well, he might have. It wasn't mic'd up. He could have. He could have. And I think the same thing is happening with Bedard. Oh, you got abusive officials last game?
Starting point is 01:03:37 Well, you're going to be on watch, and you say boo to a goose to me, and you know what? You're out too. By the way, I love when you say boo to a goose. Boo to a goose. You say anything to me, including boo to a goose, you're out. um uh i mean these this is the same group of guys that made the calgary flames the worst
Starting point is 01:03:58 penalized team in the league at because one of the flames hurt one of their own in what was a terrible incident and we can all agree on that but we can also be like oh this happened then they got the worst whistle in the league until wasn't it the commissioner stepped in no it was brian burke went public with it and said we are the most penalized team and by the way dennis weidman was not on the team anymore that was the end of his career doesn't matter we're just gonna go after the flames yeah because that's what we do we go into i'm telling you guys watch for it watch for your favorite team and your everyone's gonna have uh players on their team to take too many stupid penalties and then there are players where refs are looking for an opportunity matt
Starting point is 01:04:50 rempe matt rempe deserves a lot of penalties did he deserve one the other night no when a player i think it was on the wild skated into him no i know exactly what when you're talking yeah but 73 is out there and and the second 73 steps over the boards the refs like this they got the whistle two inches from their mouth because they're just ready to toot on that thing. Right? And I think they were looking to give Bedard one because they were looking to teach him a lesson.
Starting point is 01:05:18 I think that's exactly it. I don't think it speaks to what the Blackhawks are right now. I think it speaks to, well, maybe a little because he's their star and he's so young, but it speaks to how sensitive the refs are. I mean, he's also completely alone. If that's Brad Marsh, I don't know what Bedard said the first one.
Starting point is 01:05:36 If that's Brad Marsh and on the bench, who says whatever garbage Bedard said at the ref, he gets away with it. I think if that's any veteran player in this league, he gets away with it. But because it's this kid, the refs are like, no. You're not going to sass me, you little baby. There is no bar.
Starting point is 01:05:57 How did they even let you on the ice? There's no bar. It's purely their discretion. And you know this because of literally every hot mic moment we've ever heard is a player going fuck you to the ref and the ref going fuck you right back oh yeah and like i don't i don't want to be too loud guys because the office official room is not too far from here we are in scotia i don't give a fuck i hope they hear every word you might get 10 minutes steve if they hear you yapping a little too hard i'll sign your stick for you
Starting point is 01:06:26 fuck like yeah but i i think they're very i think these refs are very sensitive across the entire league and they saw a kid chirping no you gotta you gotta spend 10 years in this league to chirp get out of here they gave him the fan it's nonsense the fantilly whistle the rempy was i can't wait till rempy is like an established respected grizzled vet who they just love and can just murder whoever he wants we're having rangers are banking we're having the other conversation about rempy is like he gets away with everything yeah he's so big he's just so good at working those reps no but but right if fuck you no fuck you uh isn't abusive officials or isn't a penalty or anything so what is well and and but i think it comes it comes back to
Starting point is 01:07:09 the fact that the blackhawks have just let they've exposed badark how the hell aren't they last well yeah i mean the sharks are they've literally amazing you've seen the look that he remember a couple weeks ago a couple weeks ago like him sitting in the box and like people were like he looks miserable. You know what I'm talking about. You know the look I'm talking about. Everybody watching and listening to this knows. Celebrini always looks like he's having the best time. And there are games,
Starting point is 01:07:36 Sharks are getting rocked. They're getting a negative 77 goal differential. They traded everyone, including I think the team chef at the deadline. He's on Nashville now. They wanted better chefery. Who did the Blackhawks get rid of?
Starting point is 01:07:52 There was Seth Jones, obviously. That was a large trade. And he's been really But, like, all their guys where we were like, oh, maybe Connor Murphy. Nope. Ryan Donato. Nope. Oh, Morazic. Oh, Morazic.
Starting point is 01:08:03 Yeah, he's in Detroit. Yeah, because they have 14th goal. All that is to say, here's a team that needs to fix its problems in free agency. That would be the Chicago Blackhawks. They tried. They're going to need to do it again, and they're going to try harder. Mitchell? Mitchell?
Starting point is 01:08:18 No, I think, well. That'd be crazy. I think they want, they've already said that they want Kaprizov, and Kaprizov's camp has already signaled they'd be interested. Yeah, yeah. There was that story last summer. It's like, Blackhawks targeting Gabrizov. No, no.
Starting point is 01:08:30 That was Blackhawks. Who's the one with the divisional, right? That's why it was such a big story. Was it Dreisaitl? Dreisaitl. Remember you came to the show with that, and you're like, I know the owners of the Sharks. Oh, the owner of the Sharks, the German guy? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:42 I'm convinced if Dreisaitl had gone to free agency, the best offer, in my view, would have been from San Jose. Because he told you that on his private jet. No, he did not. He did not. Maybe he will next week when we're on it. Adam and him got dinner together where all rich people go. The keg.
Starting point is 01:09:00 They were at the keg together. Hey, man. The keg mansion? It's good. And Adam did what everyone who thinks they're so friggin' smart does. What's that? Go to the keg and order salmon. Oh, no.
Starting point is 01:09:11 It's so good. No. Oh, it's so good. You get the bacon-wrapped sirloin. Are you out of your mind? Oh, man. This isn't even paid for. I like the blackened chicken.
Starting point is 01:09:19 You go to a steakhouse and order chicken? Adam, I'm telling you. The keg makes really good chicken. Yes. Nice. Sorry. Come on. Are you kidding?
Starting point is 01:09:29 Are you kidding? Also, keg nachos. Gift cards, please. Well, you know I'm already out on the nachos. Yeah. I have not tried the nachos. Also, you're wrong. Now, I want to talk about –
Starting point is 01:09:39 We will have time to get to – Yeah, they shouldn't have given them that penalty. Will we have a press conference? Will we have questions? No. Maybe. All right. Well, it depends on if you –
Starting point is 01:09:49 Yeah, we can probably do it. I do want to do a press conference. Sure. But I do want to spend the next 10 minutes talking about Mikko Rantanen's not-so-revenge game against the Colorado Avalanche. Now, before the game, and I respect this. You know, people get on players and coaches for talking. I like a good quote, and Mikko's been giving them. And here's what he had to say.
Starting point is 01:10:08 Six weeks before the deadline, we were still negotiating. And at that point, I felt at that time I needed to talk to the front office, which I did face-to-face. I told them I'll be flexible, and I want to play here for a long time. Then a couple days later, they traded me. So pretty big quote. I heard about something that this was a family decision. That is not true at all. It was a hockey decision at the end of the day. My hockey career family will come wherever I want to go. So I want to correct that one, too. It was a hockey decision and nothing else. And that's about Carolina. uh and uh then he then he then he asked about the um he was asked about the trade uh to carolina first couple of days were slow a little shock shock for me for sure but then i went there with an open mind you know i never never listed any teams at that point i've heard somebody say that
Starting point is 01:10:55 you know uh i went there with an open mind to play long term and i did i tried my best uh and skeptic and i'm to see i'm i'm less skeptical i thought frege made a really good point on 32 thoughts when he said listen like they played like two home games over the entire time ranton and was there yeah he's like there's no way to sell them sell him on the facilities right there was no way to sell him on life in raleigh and and so okay and and maybe and and then miko ranton gets a dose of uh rod brendamore system and goes yeah i don't think so and and a lot of high play High-scoring players do. He had to make a decision very fast.
Starting point is 01:11:31 There were Canes fans who reached out to me, and they were like, listen, I think you were a little bit off on the Gensel thing. He always wanted to stay here, and they would have given him the right offer. And he's looked great in a Hurricanes jersey since. Yeah. This is the thing, right? It's like, oh, he wanted to stay here. You can say that after you've signed a contract elsewhere.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Girl, how many times I got to tell you if he wanted to, he would? How many times? Matt, he's giving the snaps over there in the corner. If he wanted to, he would. now miko ranton and did not score in that game and i'm just pulling it up the uh the recap here but somebody else did and it's the guy everybody forgets about it's matt duchesne he tied up the game and forced it to overtime drew called him the devil he did ice uh the avalanche in the playoffs he did he did so matt duchesne is the guy that ties
Starting point is 01:12:20 up the game we don't we got a ranton and assist on the first jason robertson goal but that's about it and so you know looking at the the the entire picture it was a close-fought game these teams likely meet in the playoffs at some point awesome that's going to be a hell of a series right for dallas like their defense is their defense is just not great no i meant poor dallas lake without high skin uh they're living proof that you know oh man who would you rather play in the first round like uh okay so last year we got satan himself this year we get beelzebub and next year i'm sure lucifer morning star times thanos cthulhu like it's listen you got to play good teams in the playoffs man yeah sorry yeah it's a great game great great game do you think it's time
Starting point is 01:13:08 for miko ranton and even if he hasn't moved on i know he signed his contract and that sort of thing but emotionally you can understand how somebody could still be stung is it time for him to stop answering questions about it. He's going to continue to be asked. Is it time for him to discontinue answering? You got a new team. You got an eight-year contract. You went back to Colorado.
Starting point is 01:13:26 You answered the questions. That's enough. That's enough. It's over. I got to say, I like the quotes, man. I like the quotes, too. I love the quotes. And that's why you should leave them.
Starting point is 01:13:37 That's enough. The book is great. No more edits, please. Leave it. Yeah, I'm about done with this story. Like, I don't need to hear more about Miko Rantanen's time in Colorado. Then let me ask you this. Who messed up harder?
Starting point is 01:13:48 Who messed up harder? The Avs by not going to $12 million or Miko for not accepting $11.5 million? Look how good the Avs have been. Yeah. The Avs didn't mess up at all. They made a decision that they had available to them, and I think they made a right decision based on how they're winning right now. Ice cold. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:04 Ice cold business. They probably did a good thing by not giving him a no-movement clause maybe like a number of years ago throughout his entire length of his contract, and they had the ability to trade him in this year. Good. Can't imagine what that would be like. It's good stuff. Can't imagine. Can't imagine. Jesse, what do you have up on the screen there?
Starting point is 01:14:24 One thing that I thought we should get to because James Myrtle put together the owner's survey. Oh, I didn't even see this. So it is the, let me just read the title, NHL owner rankings grading every team from Tampa to Buffalo. I love it. Tampa Bay came in first. I guess Buffalo's the worst owner then, huh? I guess they kind of said it.
Starting point is 01:14:47 Well, you never know. They listed two teams. Who's to say? Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Starting point is 01:15:53 A+. Oh, yeah? Everybody loves Jeff Vinnick. In terms of their ownership. Oh, you might have been right then. Jeff Vinnick, the owner, ranked third in willingness to spend, one in organizational stability, treatment of fan base, one franchise vision, two.
Starting point is 01:16:09 And at the very bottom, the Buffalo Sabres, where I think we have to talk about them a little bit. Terry Bogula came in last with a grade of an F. Owner since 2011. Regular season ranked 32nd. playoff wins rank 32nd willingness to spend 32nd organizational stability 32nd treatment of the fan base 32nd franchise vision 32nd what did he not finish last in uh i believe that's all four categories on the fan base evaluation ranking who 32nd who did they ask about this so it was a survey
Starting point is 01:16:43 of fans and only minnesota wild fans voted more within the survey buffalo sabers fan came out in second most but myrtle noted that the vitriol from the responses from buffalo sabers fans was by far and away the most from uh any of the fan bases i have to tell you doing this job one of the things you run into is uh or sorry are fans that are religious about their team and it doesn't matter that they're currently um on the outside of a playoff spot looking in if you go yeah that team's not really performing to where what we maybe thought they were going to be you will still find people most of the time who will tell you you actually you're wrong and their underlying number on this is great and you're like and you and you look at that and you go okay
Starting point is 01:17:30 while i disagree with that i understand what it is to be obnoxiously optimistic about my team and live and die by something what they they could turn it around believe me we built a career on it but where i never see that is buffalo buffalo fans you could be like the saber suck and the ends are like they're like yeah another one thinks so too and they're from out of market and they agree with us and with that what the hell are we going to do about this everybody get on board and with the coyotes gone the buffalo problem has become a lot more of a highlight coyotes fans defended their team yeah yeah they did is it wrong to say that i've moved off of like expecting more at owen power or praising tage thompson or saying jj peterka needs to reach his potential or
Starting point is 01:18:17 whatever and i've moved past even kevin adams and it's just on like terry pagula sucks at running a hockey team let's i think it's not that he sucks i don't think he i don't think he cares which is even worse yeah which is at least if you try yeah that counts yeah which is jerry jones tries he sucks at it but they make the playoffs that's fair jerry jones is in the office like i i'm past the on ice stuff i'm past the front office stuff from the ownership down he needs to get rid of this team yeah i mean i mean drop drop the franchise if you don't like yeah you're cool you're listen i'm i'm thrilled for the bill's success i'm great josh allen seems like a great guy yes uh i'm pumped for bill's fans true unicorn true absolute true unicorn yeah and he paid they paid him a
Starting point is 01:18:58 quarter million and he still left money on the table um and or a quarter billion excuse me yeah and i look at i look at what's happening in buffalo now and i go the sabers are slam dunk easy they are a couple players shy and they need some vibes of of making the playoffs they are they are lost in the dalin stuff oh i never asked out of there i did okay back up back up back up because that report was proven false that's that he did not ask to leave proven false or he said it's false per se samantha per se okay leave his name out of it it's not that i don't believe that bisson had heard that i believe bisson had heard that leave his name out of it leave uh dalin out of it why would any player want to play there exactly well and so to answer jesse's question
Starting point is 01:19:42 from right before that to support yours jesse was like hey man uh when do i expect more out of these guys or whatever it's like uh when they leave yeah when they leave they all win this craziest thing crazy yo jack eichel reinhardt uh brandon montour who else is having a good little couple days hey mccabe's gone really really well in toronto geez like like forget like forget um like it's not a slight against the city it could be of course it isn't it should be called roller coaster money town where all the roller coasters are made of money and after you ride the roller coaster you get to take some of it with you the owner sucks it's from the top down it's all bad all the time breakneck speed well and the owner cares about two things cares about
Starting point is 01:20:25 the bills and his daughter is one of the top ranked uh tennis players in the world that's what cares about really yeah jessica pagula yeah she's a she's amazing she's incredible uh like why own it right that see right and you're talking about slam dunk things about like the team being the slam dunk thing for me is hockey working in buffalo which it does it's yes it's so the fans are so passionate passion per capita might be the highest in buffalo out of any city in the entire national hockey league besides toronto like per capita per capita yeah they probably win too yeah just because of how small the actual population is and he can't make it work there because he doesn't give a shit about the team and like at that point why do you own this thing
Starting point is 01:21:13 give it to somebody who cares so deeply about hockey in buffalo i get i get somewhat well i don't know a lot of sabers fans i've seen give it to kevin adams and like he had that terrible press conference with palm trees and everything but like at the end of the day like what's he supposed to do the his boss sucks so much and so fucking he was also like the wrong guy for the job like they because of them his boss he was the neighbor yeah his boss the neighbor put the wrong guy in the position it's not his fault that he has to be gm of the buffalo saber they kept firing everyone job they kept firing everyone no one wants the job so they hired their neighbor exactly let me let me give you something okay so the franchise valuations that we talked about in
Starting point is 01:22:00 december okay since arizona left and this is why i highlight arizona leaving because okay arizona sucked up all of like 99.999 percent of poorly run franchise discussions right unfair terrible so they moved to utah and the franchise value spikes 78 to 1.2 billion that's what they're worth as of december there are only four teams that are under 30 percent in valuation change year over year meaning that they've gone all the teams benefited so much from arizona leaving and going to utah that everybody jumped at least 30 except for the montreal canadians who are already pretty high up they are the third most valuable franchise in the sport 30 for them is a lot that's a lot it's 30 on 2 billion already like now they're at 3 billion right um and i look
Starting point is 01:22:48 at, okay, here are the other teams. Are you ready? Sure. And I'll give you the reasons why they don't jump as much. Why? The Ottawa Senators, because they hadn't made the playoffs and Ottawa's a government town, it's a tougher market, okay? Sure. You can understand why that didn't jump that much. The Winnipeg Jets, 19%, because
Starting point is 01:23:04 Winnipeg is a tougher money-making market. They were having trouble selling out. They're selling out more now. Canadian dollars gotta be a factor there. It wasn't back then, remember? This was pre the wiping out of the trillions. The Columbus Blue Jackets, again, And that's a poorly run franchise.
Starting point is 01:23:21 Them being good and relevant is new. And going to be a good thing. And then you look at the Sabres. They were 26%. That's a market that is hockey mad that should have jumped at least 35%, 40%. And if you're the owner of that franchise, you've got to be looking at that and going, well, we're missing out on value here. I'm going to answer my own question, Burley.
Starting point is 01:23:43 The reason he's not selling it is because it just went up a quarter. And he didn't even do anything. we just continue finishing last and we get literally running the worst possible way and he's making handover 25 valuation increase year over year and we finished last that's great yeah i'm not that's awesome i'm not sure he's looking at that like a bad thing no also you know you know what went up a bit the bills yeah probably yeah the bill and this is the thing when buffalo takes off as a market that goes to 50 that is going to be that market is unbelievable when And we remember the Hoshik years.
Starting point is 01:24:17 Oh, yeah. We remember not fondly. And the Marty Biron and the Ryan Miller, all those years. They were miserable to play against. Miserable. Yes, I hated it a lot. Yeah. Anyway, that's my rant for that.
Starting point is 01:24:30 So should we do some press conference questions? No, I don't have the questions there on my phone. Well, then why don't you? I don't have my phone next to me. Well, maybe we'll do an extended press conference Wednesday. No, Steve. It's helping us record this program. Oh, that far.
Starting point is 01:24:45 No, I can't. So I do want to say a big thank you to the folks at Amazon Monday Night Hockey for allowing us to come in and record here. This is their green room where they get everybody ready for air. And we got to hang out in here. And there have been a few people who have been waiting outside who are going to come in after us. But we're so appreciative to them of doing this. The John Forslund interview will run Wednesday. So you're going to see John and just listen to the man tell stories.
Starting point is 01:25:10 And that'll be the only thing we upload Wednesday because there are four off-ice officials waiting outside the room to kick our ass. Did you want some of the other, where the other teams rank? Yeah, let's do it. Let's do it. Francesco Aquilini, actually, will go there, 31st.
Starting point is 01:25:26 That is also not surprising. On the owner rankings, 25 on willingness to spend, organizational stability, 30th, treatment of fan base, 31st, franchise vision, 23rd. Who's the third worst? that is murray edwards in calgary no way yes wow 26th and willingness to spend 26 and organizational stability 30th and treatment of fan base 30th and franchise man murray who's rarely there
Starting point is 01:25:52 like he's rarely in north america these days did y'all tell you what what that tells me he's got to ramp the propaganda up ramp it up we need another new arena and you need to meddle in some More elections there, Murray. The 30th? The Wurtz family comes in at 29. Really? Everyone beneath the Wurtz family right now needs to take a good look in the mirror. Holy shit.
Starting point is 01:26:16 How'd you finish beneath them? Columbus' owner, John P. McConnell, comes in at 28. I think they are good owners who allow... Here's the problem with Columbus. They were hands-off. They were hands-off. They hired the wrong people, and they were hands-off for too long. Does that make sense?
Starting point is 01:26:32 but they are if you get the right manager in there which they think they do fine now yeah and and they're exactly like the perfect owner because they let the hockey people do the hockey thing right they don't interfere so give me the best ones give me the best one the illich family by the way is 27 that's surprising that is real again that's a good family so many uh lack of playoff success yes you know so many years out of the playoffs i think people are very unhappy what have you done for me lately what's that tampa's number one tampa number one yeah jeff Finick, number two, Florida. Vincent Viola.
Starting point is 01:27:02 Number three, can you give a guess? We have the two Florida teams. I'm going to say Dallas or Colorado. I was going to say Dallas. Okay, then I'll say Colorado. Bill Foley of the Vegas Golden Knights. He's amazing. He's a great owner.
Starting point is 01:27:17 He ranked number one on willingness to spend. Bad miss. And again, these are all fan voted, right? Yes, this is fan voted. Bad miss. Tom Gagliardi. Gagliardi? Gagliardi.
Starting point is 01:27:30 Gagliardi? So there's two Gs, but only one of them is present. There's two Gs. Of who? Of whom? Dallas Stars. Dallas Stars. Okay.
Starting point is 01:27:40 Tommy. Five, Tom Stillman. St. Louis Blues owner. Oh, I've heard really good. That's an owner you never hear about, which is usually a good thing. Awesome. And we'll wrap up with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who ranked... Oh, I got a little scroll in here.
Starting point is 01:27:57 Come on. Uh-oh. Come on now. Uh-oh. Where did that come from? 17. Came in almost right in the middle, actually. Okay, that's purely lack of playoffs driven.
Starting point is 01:28:07 This is like for what? You can't say that this team won't spend. Let me give you the rankings that the people said. Willingness to spend, they came in at fifth. Great. That's just wrong. What do you mean? Well, like willingness to spend, they should be anywhere other than one is just false.
Starting point is 01:28:24 Yeah, they'll spend. They'll overspend. I guess. anything other than There's super spenders, yeah. But I look at a team like Vegas that's so willing
Starting point is 01:28:32 to blow assets for the future. Like, I understand why Vegas would win that over Toronto. They're fifth. I'll relax. Toronto five, relax.
Starting point is 01:28:41 But here's where they drop to 17th because organizational stability, they're 20th. They're pretty stable. Nobody gets fired. No, they're not. What do you mean?
Starting point is 01:28:50 Pardon? We just had a new GM and coach. Yeah. Keith Bailey just got it. After five years. We're about to have a new president, maybe. Yeah, maybe.
Starting point is 01:29:01 I don't know if I can say that in here. Are you listening? They kind of need to win. What else? Treatment of the fan base, 29th. Oh, that's wrong. That's not true. I don't agree with that.
Starting point is 01:29:15 The fans don't think so. There's a Lego display a kilometer from here, and it's fun. Can I ask you a question? Ask me. Nobody else. It's just you and me here. It's just you and me. Is Adam out of touch with the fans?
Starting point is 01:29:27 No, it is the fans who are wrong. It is the fans who are wrong. Listen, if they were performing in the playoffs, that would be much different, right? I don't know, Adam. Sounds like you're pretty out of touch. All right, maybe I am. And Franchise Vision leaves coming at 21st. Again?
Starting point is 01:29:44 Yeah, like. I get that. Why should they be higher, though? Well, they should be higher than that. I mean, at least they make the playoffs. No, but what is the vision beyond this year? Yeah. cloudy you you got you got tavaris expiring you got tavaris expiring you got marner expiring you
Starting point is 01:30:03 got shanahan holding on by a thread yeah you know cannot what's the one you know when you have those magic eight balls that's yeah i remember being seven sorry you know what i remember toy story one future is future is cloudy or something yeah okay all right fair Oh, man. So Leafs fans unhappy. Well. As they should be, Steve. It also didn't help that they asked him in the middle of a losing streak.
Starting point is 01:30:27 I don't think they asked him yesterday. Asked him in a winning streak. I don't think James wrote that in a day. He might have. He's impressed. Steve, do you agree with how you are, like, a lot of the times for a lot of people, the head of the fan base and you project. I don't think he wants that. I think for a lot of people, you project what the average Leaf fan is feeling.
Starting point is 01:30:48 Especially after games like Saturday, you know? So would you agree with that assessment of the fan base? I think that's a fair question. Okay. I will say I think it's too harsh, but I understand where the frustration comes from. like in terms of like what the team gives the fans i i do think they make a massive effort they they spend a lot i think ticket prices would be the reason oh well that yeah yeah no that i think ticket price is why they feel that way and beer prices yeah okay so that's bad yeah but uh
Starting point is 01:31:25 the stuff they do they're very involved in the community they're they're always out there doing doing next generation games all that stuff yeah they they don't uh hide um you know they're they're pretty open they will take initiative to speak to the media sometimes when they feel like it's necessary brad for living like last week so 29th is pretty harsh the lack of playoff success i mean you can't look past that and the price is also very difficult to look past but i don't know 29th That's a little much. That's pretty far down. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:58 I think that's it. 17th overall. I think it's a fan base crying out for some playoff success. I think that's what that is. Win in the playoffs? Number one. That's crazy. It's funny how one and two are two of the most successful franchises of this century.
Starting point is 01:32:11 Isn't that funny? Yeah. Who's won most of the cups in the last five years? I want to go back in time. Oh, yeah. The two most willing to spend, Tampa and Florida. Where was Florida on that list like five years ago? They would have invented a new slot.
Starting point is 01:32:24 Like 37th. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, they're beneath the Whalers and the Nordiques. We will wrap now, but thank you so much for joining us from Scotiabank Arena, our very first show here. Pretty cool. Pretty darn cool. Which is pretty neat.
