Starting point is 00:00:00 Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
Starting point is 00:00:28 The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals. see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code Dangle. Taskers across Canada book up fast, especially for same-day tasks. Get $15 off your first task right now with the promo code Dangle at TaskRabbit.ca or the TaskRabbit app. You should

Now imagine how much cooler of a spaceship it would be if it was a Tremor.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Here's the thing. They're known for everything. Off-road, on-road. It doesn't quite fly like Santa's sleigh, even though we keep saying that. It's not quite there. You haven't tried. You know what? Fair. Fair. I don't believe that's what comes with it. However, the great thing about the Ford F-150 Tremor is the fact that you can tow basically anything. There is a 360 digital cluster that gives you instant feedback on your off-road status, including pitch and roll angles which is actually really important if you're on like a cottage road
Starting point is 00:02:26 if it's wintry uh my in-laws uh at their their cottage basically uh they're up there all winter and uh the the road just turns to ice just solid ice and thankfully my ford f-150 has an ice setting on it so i could drive better uh overland and offland and city jungle and country jungle wherever it is you're driving the ford f-150 tremor is right for you 10 000 pounds maximum towing it's for yeah exactly do that again exactly yeah yeah uh it's for big boy toys and for christmas toys as well because there's gonna be a lot of hauling this christmas it's not ho ho ho that's there you go so check out ford.ca slash f-150 to build out your f-150 tremor today again it's four dot ca slash f-150 to build yours out today
Starting point is 00:03:15 the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake oh man oh man forget about st louis forget about st louis well you guys are thinking about st louis Stop thinking about it. Stop. Don't. Don't. Because we may have jumped the gun. Not we.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Whoever was reporting this. I think it was Kipper that had potentially St. Louis and Edmonton doing a goaltending deal. Jordan Binnington? Yeah, apparently he's stayington. It's somebody else. But we'll get to that in a second. First, I just want to say we've jumped up over $1,000 in donations for Movember in the last day. Jesse, are we able to look up Posetta?
Starting point is 00:04:03 Are we beating that fool? i need to know if you give me a second i can look it up for you because i am looking at uh i'm looking at our number right now three thousand seven hundred and eighty five dollars raised which is pretty flipping amazing remember this goes to all sorts of men's mental health care and jesse has shaved the mutton chops he's got the just the full mustache i i did i have gone mustache the mutton chops were a little difficult to live with is that right what what where did you find them the most difficult to live with uh on in public spaces you get looks so i'd forget you know and be like oh someone's kind of looking at my face or i got a little half smile from the
Starting point is 00:04:40 cashier i feel like you pulled it off they must think it's i don't know i don't know i think the mustache is more appropriate i'm getting judged i'm straight up getting judged like dropping my kid off at school people oh and they're looking at your goatee thing what is that that guy looks awesome no i don't know that that's that's not the look i'm getting i don't people are very complimentary of it but i don't think they've seen it up close it's not it's not exact it's a little patch i think you're rocking it i think it's pretty good yeah i think it's giving going through a divorce and how dare you went through went went at one point past tense it's done now it looks like you drive an f-150 oh well i do yeah that's what it looks like i do yeah you're
Starting point is 00:05:19 right you're right yeah i get out and you know what the funny thing about my f-150 is it's white so it looks like one of the city f-150s so i can just park anywhere and everybody's like city of toronto city of toronto yeah so it's like so you could just they're like like the the parking cops look at you and they're like i don't think i should give him a ticket i think he's i think he's toronto city anyway yeah yeah so uh the totals michael posetta is at thirty nine hundred oh three thousand nine hundred oh two uh we are at thirty seven three thousand seven hundred and eighty five we're gonna beat posetta we're 200 bucks but we were like a thousand under i know on wednesday and we've caught up and we're there's 200 under we're gonna beat pesetta i'd beat him up
Starting point is 00:06:02 also i i was gonna tell him the other day i just forgot um we're gonna beat him in november with your help yep otherwise we can't last couple days we're screwed yeah let's do a big push here and we i think we can do this easily yeah i think we should crush pesetta yeah yeah yeah he also raised his target oh because we uh we pushed him a little to raise a little bit more money because we shouldn't be the next to you mr pesetta you should be way ahead of us so we raised this target what's the target now uh 4k so ours is still at 3k we've blown past it yeah we can still beat him that's our new target our target is one dollar over michael okay pesetta you know what for you ryan reeves was one thing but now it's
Starting point is 00:06:45 on to his toughest challenge trying to beat us do you think like final hour he just writes a check himself yes he has he's like okay these stupid podcast guys i'm just gonna put this thing to rest he just looks around the room and just all right a bunch of you are on one-way contracts you need to you need to help me out can i do yeah you can i just like e-transfer what is this gonna do over my phone matt benning i've shy of puckpedia get over here get over all right now listen i told you that uh it's not the it's probably not going to be st louis edmonton and the reason for that and i think a lot of people forget this is that nhl gms are salty babies and the reason it's not going to be st louis edmonton apparently is that um the
Starting point is 00:07:35 edmonton oilers are salty babies for making a huge mistake and leaving holloway and broberg as rfas and doug armstrong took advantage of that a summer ago and coincidentally though the blues gave up a bunch of futures and are bad in the present they also didn't need to right they were just trying to trying to make nicey nice but apparently jeff jackson and stan bowman have not forgotten the slight so they will not be dealing with each other uh that's that's dumb now what apparently might be uh is pittsburgh and several different uh people have talked about it freed cj everybody's talked about it uh they got four goalies ready to play in the nhl and ahl and who's the most expensive one tristan jari passed through waivers multiple times last year uh was
Starting point is 00:08:24 basically unplayable but had a good start this season and what's funny is kyle dubas might get out with with without retention get out from the worst contract he has signed as a general manager or second worst ryan graves i think is ryan graves is the worst one yeah but the most expensive one was tristan jari because he's 5.375 ryan graves is only four and a half mil i think it's also just something that makes sense man like uh jari hasn't been bad uh this year on a not great team not a not great team but you know he hasn't been bad that's a compliment yeah and uh throughout his career during the regular season he's typically actually all right yeah uh if you go and look at some of the seasons and you know it's funny how easy it is to earn a reputation because i was
Starting point is 00:09:12 thinking to myself well oilers are trying to win a cup he's a good regular season goalie they need to make the playoffs but he's terrible in the playoffs i went back he's played one full series that's it he was bad though it was bad but it was one full series yeah i did not know that it felt like it was a lot more um but listen they need to make it straight up so you can't do it with your current crop uh how do you do it dubis you know he loves a dinky little deal of two guys you've never heard of but he also loves a colossal freaking deal and i think this would be more along those lines my guess and i have nothing to back this up guys but i do think kipper was right when he said edmonton's looking for a defenseman and the reason i say that is i've watched edmonton
Starting point is 00:10:02 play defense yeah it's um poor it is poor uh so if tristan i mean what a turnaround for tristan jari you know a guy that they literally like uh we can't play you at the nhl level just six seven months ago is now potentially going to a team that has been and again how many months ago speculative but Kevin Weeks was the one tweeting about it. Oh, stop it. Kevin Weeks was saying that when he tweeted about it, going to a team that's been to two finals in a row. Jesse, do you like the fit?
Starting point is 00:10:34 Potentially. I do. Yeah? I think it's an upgrade. I think Jari's playing well enough that whatever they get out of him right now would be better than what they're getting currently out of Skinner and Pickard. And I even think if Conor Ingram can kind of be what he's been in his career, that'll also be an upgrade i think in goal right now there needs to be just some sort of change
Starting point is 00:10:55 just to see what's what's what they can do new you know change for the sake of change i think would be nice and i'd like to see jari uh out there and i don't think it would cost you a lot i don't think because of the contract i think if it was a defenseman it might cost you right so jari makes uh 5.38 who wants to get insane who wants to get completely nuts what does kyle dubas like to do he likes to collect he does like to trade down he likes to collect sue greyhounds like infinity stones he never did manage to get his hands on darnel nurse oh do you really think no i mean because because darnel nurse has had his moments in in the playoffs and stuff for edmonton like for a team that needs more defense is trading darnel nurse
Starting point is 00:11:43 is he that is he a negative so i know his contract's high but like whatever man like cause salary caps going up that's that's where this trade goes awry and like i honestly think if you're if you're managing to get jari off your books and you're acquiring nurse you could probably also get rid of graves too like just for the the dollar value but here's here's where it goes awry i think in nhl circles darnold nurses value is a lot higher than it is in the online hockey community i mean yeah he busts his ass yeah he makes way too much money like there there's a world where um he's like actually a really popular player but that 9.25 million dollar cap hit is insane remember when tyler myers was the worst most overpaid friggin unplayable plug in the world
Starting point is 00:12:43 and then he signed for like three and everyone's like ah chaos giraffe love them yeah it's six mil yeah it was painful it was painful and now it's uh no that actually that fits that's valid okay i like that um listen i don't think it happens but i'm trying to figure out how on earth the money works for Edmonton because they're not really in a position to take on a goalie who makes over five million dollars even if they traded away Stuart Skinner even if they traded away Skinner and Pickard what about a what about a winger what about a Mangia Ponte man a guy you just got I guess I guess you could like Pod Colson doesn't make a ton i just thought manjapani makes 3.3 right so kapanen is an interesting name i don't think
Starting point is 00:13:33 dubas wants him back i also think he's injured again and he is injured again that was a tough clip to watch yesterday it was i think i really felt that if they really want to get the deal done and they had to pay the price that dubas was asking for like if i'm on the edmonton side i'm asking for 50 retained and that 50 retained for stewart skinner plus whatever oh you want skinner retained no i want jari retained 50 oh and it's stewart skinner a two for tristan jari 50 retained plus whatever assets that are required to acquire that player leaves edmonton with more cap space so like they would they would gain 88 grand uh back and so they'd end up in the positive so that is this season and next season and the season after that's a hefty price that's the
Starting point is 00:14:20 remaining connor mcdavid seasons that are under contract that's kind of what you'd have to pay for right because that's the goalie he is right now he's not a five point whatever million dollar goalie right now he's less than that so if you're in these negotiations you want dubas to keep some of that money because pittsburgh has over 12 million bucks in cap space uh current cap space yeah this since they changed the ltir i don't understand anything according to puckpedia projected cap space is just under nine mil current cap space is just under 12.3 okay so there you go so right now they have that ability to just take on that money and you got to utilize their cap space because you don't have your own so i would pay for dubas to retain that if it's 40 or 50
Starting point is 00:15:03 and then you get into that comfy number of you're actually gaining a little cap space back so what do we got in terms of assets if i'm edmonton okay i don't have a first this year but i do have a second and a third i don't have a fourth or fifth i have a sixth and seventh dubas loves a seventh round pick and trading for one but you got all your first three picks in 2027 and you got all your first three picks in 2028 in fact you have two thirds and it could be a fit here yeah and and uh the other thing that came out is that it's might not they might not just stop at skinner it might be pickered too not in this trade but it looks like they might be trying to upgrade both goalies and i haven't heard anything about what the second goalie might be worked pretty
Starting point is 00:15:45 well for colorado yeah um so if they if they are like you go yeah there you go you know maybe you're making room for him by removing picker just for the cap space as well maybe that makes the jarry deal even easier because you're gaining that cap space too and maybe there's a case to get assets back for picker like maybe you're replenishing the draft pick capital that you got to send out there to get jari like there's a lot of maneuvering that edmonton edmonton can do and i think that's why you in particular adam screamed so much about their front office is because there is creativity we had and they've always sat on the sidelines with this situation what a good word creativity i want more gms to like listen the league is so close and you know
Starting point is 00:16:30 teams are worried about blowing it up and and making a big buy or making a big sell all right how about you just make a trade that makes your team better how about you're the oilers you have no goaltending you need it you're the penguins you have too much shut up and kiss oh my god make i'm so tired of well we just you know we can't do it what if all of us showed up to work every day and went can't do my job sometimes i just can't do it i mean and got paid five six million bucks for it that'd be pretty sweet sorry boss it's november work doesn't get done in november what sorry the entire month of november nothing happened you do forget the human side of it sometimes because these are people who are still fighting for one of 32 jobs and if they
Starting point is 00:17:20 make the gms if they make a mistake then they have to wear it if you just stick with your plan as is with the players you acquire it falls on the players and sometimes these guys are in job preservation mode right and by making moves you are exposing yourself to be axed because it is very easy to get fired in the world of the nhl and sitting on the sidelines all sometimes just buys you more time and you're just kind of the guy who's trying to maintain his position within nhl circles it's not as sometimes guys aren't really trying to make their team better they're trying to protect themselves which is a dark underhanded uh side of this this thing but it is true and these are people that clip that clip damn wow damn ours jesse there there you go no
Starting point is 00:18:05 that was really good i i thought i had a good one in the chamber because i was going to say not making a decision is a decision you're just sitting there going oh maybe things will correct them no it's a every you know i know you can't just blow it up and make a trade every time you have a bad loss or whatever and that seems emotional but to me you make decisions with everything you do or don't do and by sitting there and not addressing something that very obviously needs to be dressed addressed too sweet you are making the decision to keep your team bad Tristan Jari in eight games, by the way, is 6-2 with a 9-14 save percentage this year. Yeah, I'll take that.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Yeah, it's not bad, right? They also have Murashov, who's got a 9-13 save percentage in four games. He's 1-1-1. And Archer Shilov, who has played the majority of their games, 11. He's 4-3-4. You said that like the Grinch. Yeah, 4-3-4, 9-0-7 save percentage. So he's been pretty darn good.
Starting point is 00:19:11 You know what? You know who could really use him right now? the vancouver canucks they could really use him uh gave him up for next to nothing yeah so i like that fit better than bennington because bennington's been bad like at least tristan jari's recent history is good and goaltending is so much about that uh whatever jari did this summer to get he was he always had the talent but you know obviously a lot of it's between the ears whatever he did to get back on track it worked and i do think this is a player that probably could use a change of scenery right i talked to tristan jari once do you know where it was it was it was
Starting point is 00:19:45 in 2020 it's at the all-star game in 2020 we're at the all-star that man was at the all-star game that was with sportsnet um and it was like 40 days before the season shut down wow at the at the end of january that that he did 921 that year he was unbelievable and i think he was a rookie rookie or a sophomore yeah sophomore she played in parts of three seasons before that yeah yeah but goalies are like that ray croft was on like his fourth season when he won rookie of the year right goalie weird um he used to be real real good and he had basically one bad playoff run and it shattered him apparently because uh man whenever the penguins needed him the most even in a few regular season games where it's like we can't lose this one not only did he lose but he
Starting point is 00:20:36 was like the reason they lost is he could use a change of scenery for sure i mean he's going to come into edmonton and everyone's going to be cheering his name for at least the first week right look at us talking like it's already happening yeah yeah i know i know right and We haven't even mentioned he was an Edmonton Oil King way back in the day, and they won the WHL championship the 13-14 season. Curtis Lazar was on that team as well. Nobody else of note. But Griffin Reinhardt.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Oh, Oiler legend. There you go. There's three names, plus Jari is the third. Henrik Samuelsson as well. There's names. Hey, how about Griffin Reinhardt for Jordan Eberle? Was that the trade? no uh griffin reinhardt for the pick that the islanders used to draft matt barzal yeah that's
Starting point is 00:21:31 rough oh man i think it's what's worse um trading griffin reinhardt for the 16th overall pick um or trading the 16th overall pick for griffin reinhardt or just picking him fourth i think that was worse yeah just the selection the selection of picking them forth look them up look them up who went fifth who went sixth the i don't remember what draft that was the griffin reinhardt draft yeah that's what everybody refers to 2014 i don't remember 2012 ah all right oh that draft sucked so yeah the morgan riley was the next pick the 2012 draft was ass it is yakupov ryan murray alex gilchenyuk and then griffin reinhardt yeah that's that's gotta be one of the worst drafts ever yeah but then it goes on a bit of a run riley lindholm like hampus lindholm is real good
Starting point is 00:22:26 matt dumb has had a very good career but that's not that's not like hall of fame talent you know no no except in except in the case of morgan riley philip forestberg we've all argued morgan riley's hall of famer no we have not yeah we have we had that conversation we had the no we asked the question is he a hollow and we said we agreed yes we agreed it's not a ridiculous question and the comment section agreed yes it is this is a bad draft so who are who are the leading scorers like just the goals or points no points uh like philip forsberg i think is the undisputed never played in washington by the way he's traded for who that was another bad martin erat martin erat oh my god um you can make an argument like because brian burke said uh the leafs would
Starting point is 00:23:14 have picked riley first you yeah you can make an argument yeah like this is a shit draft man this is really bad and he was injured most of that year uh morgan he played very few games yeah i hated the pick when they made it alex i was so sad top 20 of most most points in that draft that's a bad draft you're right yeah i don't even know he was hampus lindholm is sick though i can't i can't lie i love him his little home and jake truba now that jake truba is allowed to play his game again like yeah like philip forsberg's miles and miles the best player yeah this draft is really good for defensive defenseman wait i'm wrong a guy i always do this for 2012 you know who was picked in 2012 and he's not showing up because he didn't he
Starting point is 00:23:56 doesn't score many points because he's a goalie andre vasilevsky oh there you go okay that's the first all right i like that one yeah um uh so uh interesting too chris dreger uh former nhl goalie florida panthers uh has terminated his khl contract yep and elliot friedman mused that maybe it might be you know people in winnipeg were like well he's a he's a hometown kid whatever could that be another edmonton option hometown kid and played with the manitoba moose last year yeah but edmonton i think more edmonton than then i feel like i know hellebuck's out but like i feel like winnipeg is they're okay edmonton needs to make a bigger swing than that winnipeg needs to hold the fort right i think that's the difference winnipeg
Starting point is 00:24:44 your solution in net is coming he's just not just give it a sec he'll be he'll be back i don't know january and when he's back he'll be the reigning vesna winner that's a temporary solution you're okay you're gonna be fine edmonton you're holding the fort for what you're holding the fort for a miracle is what you're doing you gotta say it like little john yeah yeah hold fort for what there you go yeah did you see him sorry did you see him at the macy's the first thing that came to my head did you see him at the macy's parade he was on like the toys r us float saying turn down for what and i was like what is going on on that dude on the toys r us float yeah what anyway i i just i don't think either of you heard what you just did
Starting point is 00:25:34 yeah what yeah oh my god that's great sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and they're way around on that it's like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's
Starting point is 00:26:14 the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the taskrabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should download that task rabbit.ca code dangle obviously we know that matthew schaefer has been added to the olympic canada roster pool um and i love when that's
Starting point is 00:27:02 announced if you're added and basically by the way if you're added now it's there you're one of 35 damn so so when whenever they announce that they're like this guy has to pee in a cup yeah that's how they should announce yeah this guy has to do drug tests Canada's goalies right now it looks like could be of these four I want you to pick three for the Olympics Bennington Kemper Thompson and the recently added Scott Wedgwood of the first place never losing a game again Colorado Avalanche I can tell you what they're gonna do which I think is Bennington Kemper Wedgwood okay what would you do no they got to do Thompson are you kidding me here's the thing like I was listening to CJ show on the way in the third goal he doesn't play
Starting point is 00:27:55 like and if he does you're in shit so if you're bringing three goalies who you think have a legitimate chance to be your starter which is kind of the position that Canada's in i think you're already in trouble i think you need to have it's this person and if things go awry then it's this person and then the third guy is like he's he's vibes guy he's there to make you laugh he's there to keep it loose i really like the argument for scott wedgwood because he's a career backup like who knows that role better than a guy who's done it including the beginning of this season right so i probably bring him kemper is playing pretty well and he's won a cup and then uh it's binnington so i think you start binnington kemper plays the relief games
Starting point is 00:28:54 if there's a conversation after let's say four games three or four games you can make the switch to Kemper and then if someone gets that's what the third goal is there for they're not there as a third option they're there if someone gets injured right so Bennington Kemper Wedgwood and that's very unfair to thompson but so be it jesse of those of those if you're team canada management and it's all up to you of those four kemper wedgwood thompson and binnington who are your goalies i'm going binnington thompson kemper those are my three and i believe matthew schaefer's added to the long list not the short list no for each set it was it's the 35 it's the third but they're still at like the 90 list are they not that here's what he said uh he said colorado
Starting point is 00:29:52 scott wedgwood joins matthew schaefer as late additions to the team of canada olympic pool if you're added now you aren't one of the 90 the original list you're one of the 35 and a series candidate oh wow wow well i mean they named the team in like a month yeah that's why i think it's cool yeah what i mean that's a great story career backup 33 years old yeah uh wedge what yeah those are those are my three by the way i think it'd be a shame to leave off logan thompson i think so too yeah um if i'm gonna be honest with you i know that binnington played great but he's the only one with a sub nine tens a percentage this year he's 30 points behind the other guys don't know like listen gold medal that's so nice that you did it at four nations i'd love to know what he
Starting point is 00:30:35 was Hamper Thompson Wedgwood what are we doing here what was Bennington I'd love to know and I don't know how we would find this what was Bennington safe percentage heading into the four nations it was bad it was garbage yeah it was garbage and then the tournament began and he was garbage and the tournament continued and he was garbage and then the final showed up and he's like I'm unbeatable like he was great it was that's that's the kind of uh thing that team canada's faced with is they look for big game and experience and i can't just brush it off as it you know saying it means nothing yeah he did it like he won the gold medal like i feel like that's enough of proof of constant that he's your starting goaltender plus the team in front of
Starting point is 00:31:21 him this year is bad like it's not he's not playing in front behind the st louis blues when he goes to the olympics it's kel mccarr and connor mcdavid and and nathan mckinnon like he's it's in a different circumstance and i feel like he's earned that number one role okay now i can tell you the save percentage too steve if you can give me the date that four nations started uh i just found it um this was an article written february 11th 2025 by kristin shilton at espn uh espn oh no sorry i'm reading his world championship stats which were awful he had a six and two record but he was an 885 so you're looking at um roughly february 11th you want me to stop at february 11th sure um even if we're missing a game here or there this just gives you a snapshot into how
Starting point is 00:32:15 bad he was jordan but 897 897 well so yeah he's even worse this year from the beginning makes sense from the beginning of the season until february 11th he was an 897 last year so there you go 289 ga a record was 15 19 and 4 ugly so it's irrelevant ugly and then he was great and then you know for as bad as he's been like sometimes you can extrapolate a lot by looking at a team's how a team's backup is performing joel hofer is two five and two with an 869 nice so bennington significantly better than that at least okay well he's an upgrade over their backup yeah it's a low bar uh uh okay low bar uh listen i'm skeptical again this year you're not picking binner the rules don't apply uh the rules don't apply i mean i i i listen i i
Starting point is 00:33:10 think it's cool that that he did that last year but i i believe that you should ride the hot hand you know the one thing i will say is that he is the cup winner out of all of them right canada has a reputation has one as a starter no he doesn't canada has a reputation for um needing to be forced into the right decision um in 2014 they didn't need to do that they had carrie price who was the third goalie i don't know who was the backup goalie who gives a damn gary price was your starter in 2010 you have martin brodeur roberto luongo mark andre flurry anyone with eyes could tell you the goalie to start in that tournament was roberto luongo in 2010 he ruled the world he was incredible they started broder broder wasn't very good
Starting point is 00:34:00 they switched to luongo they win 2002 Cujo started that tournament yeah but this poisoned the well it did poison the well it's the reason he left Toronto because he got so mad at Pat Quinn because he had a bad first game or two they presented him with the gold medal in Toronto and it was icy and you could tell he wasn't stoked about it and I love Cujo objectively the right decision martin brodeur in the year 2000 how wasn't brodeur the start of the whole time i know kind of crazy huh right so you got to be forced into the right decision and here it might be kemper but you got to be forced into it okay you think darcy kemper stanley cup erasure by adam
Starting point is 00:34:46 oh i forgot yeah stanley cup winning goaltender for the colorado avalanche 22 he did miss a bunch of that uh series with an eye injury which is bad for a goalie how did he get that again was there i don't remember i don't remember who filled in for him this is another goalie who's wiped off the face of the earth rubauer no no oh francis pavel francis oh it was great yeah and it was just the edmonton series he missed right yeah but i mean it's a conference final and they swept him right yeah but he started every other game besides that yeah yeah so he misses three he's his 10 wins throughout that run 16 starts oh i'm not saying he didn't do anything i'm yeah i'm saying it wasn't as that big of it i'm saying he missed basically a series no yes yes but like
Starting point is 00:35:35 he's the other three he was good and he won the stanley cup the thing about you're looking at it in the context of champions i'm looking at it in the concept of uh in the context of uh the leafs never get that far so that seems like a lot of games yeah all right um yeah no it's it's an interesting conversation it's going to be fun to see and matthew schaefer listen i i want him on the team i also don't know how you who you subtract to put him on the team and he's so unbelievable uh but just i think sometimes you put him in the top 35 to go listen dude we love you and you can't this time but you should you should know that you're you deserve this and i i respect team Canada's management for being for adjusting like that because in you know traditionally they
Starting point is 00:36:16 just haven't and if you're reading some of the reports out of the United States about what Bill Guerin is thinking like he's like if you can't throw bodies like you're probably not going to be on this team and I look at guys like Cole Caulfield I'm like you're not going to leave him off are you he's not going to be a scratch is he they did last year and Tage Thompson like well Tage has got to be on the team he wasn't last year he led Americans in goal scoring last year and they left them off and kyle connor was tied for second and was scratched um i don't think that happens this year the canadian and american decors are preposterous both of them are complete you both teams could ice two world-class healthy teams and be totally fine and one day i kind of
Starting point is 00:37:00 hope they allow that me too me should john tavarez be offended uh not really like i i think a little bit do you know I'll tell you why what how he couldn't possibly perform much better than he is and yet like we're trying to find roster spots for like Bedard and Celebrini for sure and like as good as Tavares has been you could argue Horvat is every bit as good how do you how do you fit him on here's what I here's where I think you should be annoyed if him team canada's management made clear that yep um that that if you go to the to the world championships you have a better shot and he went he was the captain they didn't win uh and lessons were learned as i remember the quote was not only did they not win they lost to like norway yeah but
Starting point is 00:37:56 i think it was like they just weren't very was he the captain over crosby i don't think crosby was Wasn't it Crosby and the Flurry reunion? That was last year. I think you're thinking of two different years. This is 2024. Oh, you're not talking about the most recent one. Crosby was the most recent one. Tavares couldn't go last year because they were playing the second round.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Yeah. Tavares was the year prior. You're talking 24 world championships. Yeah, so they were like to everybody, listen, you better be there because if you want to be on the Four Nations roster, you got to be at the world championships, which is why Nick Suzuki wasn't there. Nick Suzuki was like, I want to do other stuff. That's another name.
Starting point is 00:38:30 yeah another name i don't know how you leave him off but it's looking like it might it's team canada like man earlier this season i would have said you're you can't leave him off and now i'm not sure how you put him on like it's the margins are extremely tight right they also lost to florida that year so he must have left after the second round right in 24 no in 24 was boston oh yeah i know they all blend together yeah they all blend together no this is uh like yeah i guess because he wasn't even really in consideration for four nations right no not really yeah so but he's playing so well you'd like him to be more in these conversations yes is what i just this is what i'm saying team usa and team canada could easily have two teams each and they'd be
Starting point is 00:39:19 good and i think it's a fun thought exercise like you know whose name has not even crossed my mind for team canada to the point where i was like i thought he was american when he was brought up the other day on tv jacob chikrin jacob chikrin's got like eight goals like and he's like haven't even heard him mentioned he might not even make team two that's crazy they're stacked uh it still bothers me how little washington had to pay to get him it's it's like it makes me angry i'm i'm not bothered by it get him out of the division yeah fair enough fair enough out of the division uh yeah it's a it's gonna be it's now it's starting to ramp up and be more fun and obviously nobody's saying anything about the arena uh but if you were to believe jesse blake it'll get done
Starting point is 00:40:04 i have no inside info on that uh yeah you do preach did say that it's a little too close for comfort but you know whatever what are you gonna say it's we have no control over this it will be hilarious uh if apparently there was some sort of issue with the roof that they it was too low and that they had to raise the roof uh yeah like that that's no i'm serious they actually had to like fix the roof which is it's just wild important that the roof is good yeah probably especially in a place like milan i don't think it's going to be like super warm there but i don't think it's going to be cold either like it's close to the alps but it's still on like mediterranean ish you know uh right well it's very far north so i don't know what yeah okay like relatively
Starting point is 00:40:49 speaking though like what i don't know man like i don't know i don't know i'm not from the north i'm one of the dirty southerners like uh furio right right right right well anyway long story short it's going to be a uh it's going to be a fun one i'm excited to see that to me the most intriguing thing about this uh is the yeah because milan is just about what an hour away from genoa and genoa is right on the ocean um uh i'm i'm excited to see this one is the most exciting thing it's not who makes the roster it's is the building done uh and they're not going to be able to play it in switzerland because they had thrown that out there so where does the roster play yeah there's going to be some scaffolding up you think so yeah you think they'll just hide it
Starting point is 00:41:30 georgia bank arena had scaffolding up to start this season they finally got it done and fixed the new boxes and everything so it'll be last minute they'll be on the ice grown-ups are a concept that we like just made up to make ourselves feel better yeah there's no one's at the helm no one's at the wheel we're all just trying to get by that's all it is hey you know what's great you t-shirt does it fit no thank you oh i'm only great because of my t-shirt that's right i'm behind every great man is a solid t-shirt that actually fits and makes your arms strong look at that oh my god he can barely get them off he's so strong that's some yoked stuff uh over 25 million shirts true classic to 5 million customers 200 000 five star reviews true classic has become a staple of
Starting point is 00:42:18 closets everywhere and it's because it's not as jesse says the euro cut which is you could see everything because it's basically spray painted on you yeah it's not one of those shirts and then there's the american cut which is this is a parachute from the nipples down right yeah we don't want that we want a little bit in the middle you know because guys are all different shapes and sizes some of us are thicker daddies some of us are tall daddies like jesse with his cool mustache it covers it all it does and you know it's crazy that's the thing it's not just about fabric or fit it's about confidence true classic gets that we've been wearing them you should wear them too skip the guesswork and and also uh well-priced overpriced designer stuff you don't need those
Starting point is 00:42:56 kanye west thousand dollar t-shirts what kind of daddy am i huh you didn't say what kind of you're You're like me. I just lump us in in the same category. That's fine. But it fits you great too. It does. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:43:47 I want to ask you guys about the Leafs actually winning a game. We had no games yesterday. Yeah! But the Leafs won a game. Woo! and it was it was kind of funny because they they played well but they kind of got caved in the second period as they're known to do this year third so they caved in the second two it wasn't great i thought they were okay okay uh and yet they pulled it out joseph wall uh troy stetcher
Starting point is 00:44:17 says he's like i've been here four games that joseph has been the best player each and every time uh yeah correct so how you know one of the conversations we had on wednesday is and jesse you asked this question if this road trip doesn't go well does Craig Berube come back as the head coach is that now off the table uh no no yeah no there's still many games to go once like you won in overtime it looked like shit like what do you yeah their last regulation win was the one against the Utah Mammoth on November 5th which there's time for him to be fired which heading into this game i was like if the leafs figure it out internally here's how and it was their center depth matthews tavaris lawton wah the only complete game those four have played together
Starting point is 00:45:04 this season was the mammoth game and they won and they won in regulation yeah holy hot shit but um yeah that was uh up and down to say the least the first period i thought was better than the stats suggested um because they got screwed on penalties brutal the nick waugh won fine the first two power plays were fairy tale fictional nonsense made up by the refs you get a call uh you know you miss a call you get a call wrong whatever that one the officials had to go out of their way to be aggressively wrong so i hate that and resent that and i thought the leafs were better than the numbers showed because they were shorthanded three times second period yeah you needed wool to bail you out a few times but you looked a little better numerically and then it's
Starting point is 00:45:59 been a theme recently where uh the leafs are a team in transition now and uh that transition is they have decided to stop being a shitty second period team and have decided to start being a shitty third period team you didn't like their third period oh my god it was awful wool is the only reason that game even kind of went to overtime and uh easton cowan broke his um you know he stepped away from his strengths which is almost scoring leading the team and should have been goals yeah he's been playing great but that was the first time i was like okay it needs to touch the back of the net though easton and that goal went that goal was beautiful oh my god that was crazy that was a great shot great shot and the one goal the leafs gave up who had to give
Starting point is 00:46:48 away in the ozone max to me i thought fans were kind of harsh it was a giveaway it wasn't good but like it didn't fall out of the sky like miles would made that happen yep to his credit and then it's an odd man rush and a great goal from a great player in Zach Wierenski so I don't I don't ride Domi as hard on that one I thought he actually had a pretty good game it looks like he's going to sit today um and then overtime is obviously rock stars so I want our shit I want to ask you guys about that because I actually thought Domi had one of his better games of the season I agree except for that giveaway and it looks like he's going to sit and I have to tell you uh with dakota joshua and matthias michelli sitting i didn't miss either of them no no joshua
Starting point is 00:47:38 looks like he's coming back in michelli will sit a second game probably play tomorrow and sat on saturday and like maybe that's a style thing you know like you know columbus doesn't necessarily play like washington um is joshua there for like tom wilson sort of thing he's a factor columbus uh sort of has that factor with olivier but he wasn't playing but he wasn't playing right so it could be that but i i think the message is loud and clear from craig berube one spots are open two i hate this hockey team he just he is not satisfied with this roster at all and he's trying to scream it from the rooftops to brad trill living by scratching millions of worth of hockey player every night.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Jesse, what do you think about Max Domi scratched? If that's what happens. I think it's the correct thing to do. I think he looked better on the wing, obviously. I think the center thing, even Berube has admitted, like, hey, let's not do that, especially when they're healthy. Like, there's no reason to play him there. But I think it was very telling that he didn't get
Starting point is 00:48:44 a second of ice time in overtime. And that's after that play. And when you are in this position in the lineup as a depth winger you can't make a mistake that leads to almost the game winning goal like that's what you are out there to not do well and the last time berube played him in overtime what happened he made a mistake that led to the overtime winning goal he's fighting it and i think right fighting it now the coaching staff can see that he's fighting it like you said and that he's not making the smart little plays it's not about his effort level at all like i think we all know max
Starting point is 00:49:20 Domi is always giving a hundred percent effort for him it's about the decision making and I think other guys on this team often it's about effort yeah sometimes he tries too hard yeah Max Domi yeah he can he can be faulted at that I think a lot of guys on this team uh that we all know the passengers quote they can be passengers at time at times and they aren't playing 200 foot game and Max Domi doesn't have that problem it's with him it's simply hockey skills and sometimes he has lapses in judgment i sometimes you ever just brace yourself because you know no one's going to like what you have to say william nylander had a bad game you had a bad game and berube called him on it and berube called him on it and the like pretty much the moment after he called him
Starting point is 00:50:09 on it and i think benched him for a shift he turns it on to a point where he is the reason they won like they're i mean what was that 14 15 minutes on the ice and only 42 seconds of puck possession uh it was like 17 minutes 42 seconds of puck possession he had one shot on goal he was bad you're not going to win a lot of games with this roster with him not being clicking and moments after they put that graphic on the screen easton cowan sets a pick which i loved because columbus did it all friggin night uh no call ref tells you something's allowed you do it um like Cowan gets open he's great the hard work of John Tavares you pointed out Adam freaking unreal but it's Willie who ends up setting up Cowan and the reason he's able to rip such a
Starting point is 00:50:55 great shot is because he puts the puck right where it where it's meant to go so that's Willie doing Willie shit and then in overtime uh a lot of people were giving Matthew shit um but he doesn't get a point on this he makes it happen the reason willie has a wide open net it is because matthews gets off the bench charges like a bat out of hell and he's open for the one t and if your jet grieves you're screwed because you have to choose between facing willie dead on or matthews dead on or and make the wrong decision like a soccer goalie basically what do you do what are you supposed to do what you're supposed to do is you go well at least we got a point because you're about to get scored on and uh willie buried it and i thought his body language was real interesting
Starting point is 00:51:48 he's very clearly hurt like i i don't i don't think there's anything more to read into other than he is dealing with an injury he was given the day off of practice yesterday yes he's already missed a game with injury and that is not something willing me lander has done over the entire course of his tenure more than as as a toronto maple leaf he doesn't miss games due to injury and he did it this year and the way he played in those first couple periods where he's not taking as many shots as he could be where he's not infecting play on the offensive side he's clearly dealing with something and then he's able to turn around overtime because it's a little more open ice a little easier but um he's hurt he is and i just thought he seemed off after the game like his
Starting point is 00:52:29 celebration was nothing if you look at all his post-game interviews like he seems he's like he's not surly ever he's just sort of short and dismissive um but like i don't know physical pain will make you that way yeah if that's what he's dealing with so i don't know i just i thought it was interesting i didn't think he had a very good game but who cares you can like this is the thing right you had a winnable game late when when you talk about goalies giving you a chance to win that's exactly what they're talking about that's exactly what joseph wall did yeah he gave you every opportunity you could you could have played 55 shitty minutes but he put you in a position to win it in those five remaining minutes and we forget that that's
Starting point is 00:53:20 how the Leafs played for a large majority of last season this looked like every game they won last year where it was either stallers or wall standing on their head a couple times and them playing really not the prettiest hockey and then bailing themselves out by the end of it if wool doesn't come back when he did um I think guys are fired already like he's been they still haven't done great with him but he's gotten them but he's done great five points in the standings yeah and he's he's also just a happy guy like he just seems like every every quote it's like yeah like they were asking him what he was grateful for it he's like oh i'm really grateful for the guys in here and like he's actually bringing some positivity i think which is much much needed in that dressing
Starting point is 00:54:04 room yeah but like berube was like oh he was mad at me when when he when he got pulled in the montreal game and even during the montreal game his mask comes off and he screams at the ref he goes blow the fucking whistle and i was like say that i thought he was like mark shifley like i thought he i didn't know he swore yeah oh yeah i've never i've seen joseph wool swear yeah but if you had a potential puck ready to take your eyes out or take your jaw off oh you'd swear too oh i'm not saying it was undeserved i'm just saying i didn't know that was in his bag it's a it's you know they asked him about that and he said i you know and this is a if you didn't watch this game this is a game where the leafs basically got just rocked by the canadians um it was bad
Starting point is 00:54:46 uh the the thing he said was is like i was having fun i was battling in there i like that uh and the fact that it didn't look fun the leaves were terrible and the fact that he's like i was having fun i'm like oh thank god for this guy he's great now i i have to ask the real question and the most important question to this leafs team is how do you guys think matthews looked in his first game back um fine um he was getting attempts he was getting shots um but like fine isn't enough this is the problem he's not playing like a 13 and a quarter player right like but it's his first game back so if we're taking out the whole beginning of the season and we're going with okay he just missed what was it two weeks i have no friggin idea because they won't put
Starting point is 00:55:38 timelines on anything so i just got to go off the top of my head um if i'm grading based on that curve he had a good game and i mean the guy who was on his right wing is about to be healthy scratched and the guy in his left wing is playing his first game in a couple of weeks too yeah nice i didn't think look comfortable all night um looks like he might still be hurt you think yeah well Well, the, the blue jackets, like when I talked about them setting picks all night, like Dean Evason had those guys all over the Leafs and in particular nice, they drove them wide to the point of interference all night. They're holding them, they're hooking them and they were setting picks.
Starting point is 00:56:21 So they made his night extremely difficult. If you're going to grade on the curve, you would usually in a season that's normal. i think nize was fine matthews was fine while i didn't notice in a bad context so i'm gonna file that under fine as well jesse what did you think the first period was hard to judge like you said steve with all those penalties um and so second period i think he was okay like you said i don't think that is good enough but i'm willing to just say hey it's his first game back let him ease back into nhl action one one thing i did notice um i don't think they want him as a primary option on the penalty kill anymore which is something we talked about and again uh matthews
Starting point is 00:57:09 and lotten haven't played a ton of games together this season they want lot note there but they had to turn to matthews on the penalty kill in the first because they had three in one period and they're like well geez we got to get him out there so difficult to get in your rhythm i'm not going going to take too much from one game yeah and i thought when the game was on the line at the end of the third period and in overtime he was pretty dynamic especially in overtime he showed up and there was a couple low plays there and the defensive side of the game is hasn't missed a beat yeah he's really good defensively uh steve's favorite term is defensive 2c abilities were fantastic so uh austin matthews thumbs up for me okay need some goals need some goals a minus b
Starting point is 00:57:52 plus uh did you guys see the mitch marner uh lars zeller jawing at each other in ottawa i did lars zeller is uh he's having a great transition to being dickhead vet you know what i mean yeah he's been that for a few years he seems to know which player on each team to get to get after and marner's having a tough time in in vegas right now like there's no there's no skirting it he'll be fine but you know uh over the course of this week he and jack eichel have given up just absolute pizzas which led to the ends of goals and then martyr sort of got hit and and he was looking at the ipad and at the end of the period in the first period with about 12 seconds to go lara zeller goes over and just starts yakking at him yeah and he's like what
Starting point is 00:58:37 are you like waving the ipad out yeah so i thought that was interesting can i give you my stat please there are five teams in the nhl that have 10 wins they are vancouver who are 29th in the nhl they are the leafs who are 27th in the nhl they are the oilers who are 25th in the nhl they're the chicago blackhawks who are 23rd in the nhl in the fifth team the vegas golden knights who are eighth because they've lost so much in overtime they have four wins worth of losses there's never been a bigger example of why there's never been a bigger uh reason to change the point system than this year's vegas golden knights they didn't calgary get in with 17 overtime losses or something a couple years ago
Starting point is 00:59:39 17 well and what's vegas on pace for probably more rush that yeah at this current pace which you know they might not but they're eighth place in the nhl they are a top 10 team in the nhl with 10 wins and 13 losses that sucks and that's got nothing to do with mitch or nothing that's stupid now a lot of games have gone to overtime in the shootout this year and a lot of teams have lots of those loser points but they have the most um vegas has eight st louis has seven how much worse would they be without those they're already in the basement yep seattle and la have six oh colorado those frauds they have five it's bad man 10 and 13 looks a lot worse when you put it that way but that's not how the league looks at it so they're
Starting point is 01:00:28 eighth in the entire league and that's not just one player that's the whole team vegas fans are not thrilled so far there's been a few that have been publicly angry about mitch and here's the here's the play and if you fast forward if you put it forward a little bit too like it's um yeah there you go there's mitch yelling at laura zeller um how about dora fey of man not even looking at eller punch him in the head yeah i don't think he can do that in that moment yeah the refs that's a good suspension also auto was on a power play there so yeah all the more reason punch him in the head well that's what i mean is dorifayev could get it and then it could be down five yeah now i mean i'm in the wrong here because otto was up three one vegas does
Starting point is 01:01:10 end up tying this game so they they dragged a point out of this game that's the glass half full way of looking at this punch him in the head punch him in the head i don't know you could just grapple you know you could just grab a grab a collar the ref is in the middle of this sorry the linesman i think this interaction was i don't know you're bruce cassidy it's like man my 12 million dollars player is talking to lars lars eller in 2025 i don't love that the screenshot of the ipad's funny it is it's pretty funny yeah that's funny yeah i've never seen that before just two guys beacon while one of them holding one of them's holding an ipad now i know martyr's points are a little bit down in his pacing but like i i also kind of think like
Starting point is 01:01:55 there's all the nhl sometimes unlike many many many other sports you do really highlight the team part of it and when teams get a lot of new blood injected or they get a new star player or whatever it's very like a lot of times the first couple of months are a huge adjustment period more than i think people think it's maybe not a great example but nashville last year oh yeah i mean i still don't think they've adjusted i look at no i look at uh um like tavaris came in here and fit like a glove but mitch has played basically with the same players in the same system his entire life in the nhl so like 18 19 years old he rolls in and it's been the same guys and you know because the top six you know or at least like the core four guys where he played
Starting point is 01:02:40 those guys were always the same now he's playing with completely different people and i do think that given time he'll do fine in the regular season the playoffs are still going to be a question mark for me but you know i don't think he's going to be tracking at 78 points and 14 goals forever the most glaring thing for me again you make 12 million bucks he's got four goals but like i'll say this for vegas fans like i've seen this movie before and i don't know if he's historically a slow starter for points he's definitely a slow starter for goals yeah they come later and someone at some point uh usually during the fall yells at him to shoot and then he does and then it goes in because he can shoot which is what we screamed at him all the time
Starting point is 01:03:27 there was one night in particular i remember he was having a really shitty start and i was like can someone tell this guy to shoot yeah and then he had two goals that night and he rode like this great streak of goal scoring because he remembered oh i can shoot it's it was he's a very infuriating player like that but like even at his decreased pace he's on pace for like what 75 80 points the smart money is on him having a better season than the one he's currently having jesse kind of bounced in here today and i'm kind of angry at him but it's because he keeps drinking the right i do it every day and you're shocked i know you need to hop on the ag1 train that's reason i'm always bouncing now if you go to drinkag1.com slash sdp okay you get your limited

It wants a promotion. elevate your savings with the scotia high interest savings account always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest conditions apply visit scotiabank.com slash hisa to learn more scotia bank you're richer than you think uh yesterday or sorry last show i asked you guys about trent frederick i said who am i i've played 25 games i have two goals i'm minus seven i'm gonna do it again who am i oh i've
Starting point is 01:06:49 played 22 games i have 19 penalty minutes i'm a minus seven i have zero goals i have zero assists and i'll give you this one i am a forward i think i saw this one is this person a flyer yes garnett hathaway yes jesse were you going there too no i didn't have a guess now garnett hathaway he's not a big point getter normally in the 20 to 25 mark on his best years no but that's probably not great right and was suspended for spitting on a guy yes well yeah that's garden hathaway for you yes uh that's not great but i look at the philadelphia flyers and other than trevor zegras and travis connect me not a lot of scoring going on generally connect me he's got 21 and 22 Sorry, Zegers has got 21 and 22.
Starting point is 01:07:34 Konechny's got 17 and 22. Christian Dvorak, big contract Christian. 15 and 22. Owen Tippett, 14 and 22. And Couturier, 14 and 21. That's like really low. Where's Mishkov? Oh, Mishkov's been terrible.
Starting point is 01:07:49 I'm not even asking that to me. 11 points and 22. Boy, I know he's not playing a ton. Yeah. Wow. It's great for my fantasy team. Ask me about it. So good.
Starting point is 01:07:58 Bouchard's picked it up for you. Yes, he has. i i'm i'm just i'm wondering with philadelphia uh because we haven't really they haven't really made the news this year um we're not talking about them too much they're in the hunt we should be like they're objectively better they're objectively better and ours been good they are a very odd team i still don't know what they are well the the argument that i've seen from flyers twitter is why the hell is grabenkin sitting and why the hell isn't hathaway right even if grabenkin's not the guy you put in like hathaway has he hasn't been productive the flyers currently sit uh at
Starting point is 01:08:39 64 goals to give you an idea the leading the nhl in goals is the avalanche with 94 and the stars with 83 so that's what the best teams are doing now philadelphia as i said uh is there they've got One, two, three, four, five teams behind them. One of them is the LA Kings, which is shocking. But the Blues, the Flames, the Kraken, and the Preds have all scored less goals along with the LA Kings. And then ahead of them just a little bit, New York, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Columbus, and Winnipeg.
Starting point is 01:09:10 So it's admirable what they've done here. And so is this Philadelphia team under Rick Tockett? I kind of thought with Rick Tockett and the talent that he had in Vancouver, They played a good, really free-flowing game. A little more loose. I don't know that they are able to play that. Maybe they don't have the talent on the roster.
Starting point is 01:09:29 But are the Philadelphia Flyers like a defensive... Like, Kolosov, two games, 930 save percentage. Ladar, 9-4 with a 913. And Sam Arison's played seven, and he's got an 850. That's rough. Yeah, that's a shame. So, you know, are Philadelphia a defensive juggernaut now? uh well there are teams that are defensive juggernaut because they're playing good defense
Starting point is 01:09:58 and there are teams that are defensive juggernaut because they're forced to be and i kind of think they fall under that category i think this is a new coach trying to bash his system into a team and bash habits into a team and i think if you're a flyers fan it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking this is the way the entire season is going to go but coaches don't coach the same way in october that they do in march right i could easily see sometime right around christmas you know right around now talk it take the reins off a little bit and change things up and all of a sudden there's this explosion and it's a wave that flyers are able to to ride i mean it's a better theory than they're just bad so jess do the
Starting point is 01:10:52 philadelphia flyers scream like a scream of a smack of a team that really needs some high-end scoring from guys like i don't know mitch koff and other people like it's zegras has come in and been amazing for them yeah i think this is a sign that rick tocket's doing a good job with what he has if you don't have the high-end skill talent one thing you can do is create a good defensive system and get your players to work hard i think he's being successful in that and they're playing a right way we saw it in vancouver when he was successful there they were a team that could really stop the other team from getting a lot of offensive chances and i think that's what he's instilled there with the flyers if you look at their expected goals against they uh sit right
Starting point is 01:11:33 up there in all situations with the colorado avalanche wow their expected goals against this season sits at 63.45 uh that's the colorado avalanche in first place and in second place is 66.54 the philadelphia flyers and that's that's just good defensive system hockey so i've thumbs up to rick talkett for going in there and getting the play the right way they don't have the talent to back that up with goal scoring on the other end they're not a complete team yet but right now you can't say that they don't have the foundations of something really good in terms of this system they're playing on the offensive end of hockey and this might just be a bad year for mitch koff he clearly showed up to camp out of shape i don't know how you catch up but i'm wondering you know
Starting point is 01:12:18 are they a low-key buyer at the deadline kind of like what la was if you you know in 2012 when they could not score really strong defensively goaltending look good if you can get a couple goal scorers in that lineup uh all of a sudden that could be a powerhouse team i don't know if i in my opinion i'm not chasing this if i'm daniel briere okay like i'm not like looking at oh we're really good defensively let me go and make some really quick decisions to get goal scoring and screw up the screw up this whole thing you're a young team see where the chips fall this is a we build slowly where we have the pieces now for the foundation of it like i said and now we just keep going and we develop continue to develop through the draft maybe we can make a couple
Starting point is 01:12:58 free agent signings but a trade to really bolster and chase a playoff spot i don't think it's too much okay um where does matt vay michkov rank among philadelphia flyers in terms of time on ice per game amongst forwards or all players both okay uh i'm gonna go uh you know what forwards because that that illustrates yeah i gotta like drop them back behind all the defense forwards yeah i'm gonna say seventh seventh okay amongst forwards i'll go eighth eighth well seventh would be bad adam eighth would also be bad just no one of the it is ninth oh no ninth you can't play him though you can't he's not played well like one of those one of those guys is uh dude he's playing less than bobby brink who's playing more garnett hathaway or mitchikov mitchikov okay good mitchikov
Starting point is 01:13:55 is playing 14 minutes and 46 seconds those are positively nick robertson numbers that's all yeah hathaway's doing 1003 um so i can understand the frustration there but like bobby brink is playing 1607 tippet's playing 1638 dvorak and kate's are centers so i guess that's a little different like dude you gotta be up there you're matt vayne mitchkov by the end of last season you looked like a killer he's got to get back to that good luck mid-season not easy to do not easy to do but maybe don't go on vacation in February when uh you know when the Olympics are on hit the gym you know that's an interesting thought like the Olympic break is going to be really really good for some guys and he's a huge candidate to break out yeah I again my fantasy team is hoping and
Starting point is 01:14:49 praying another team i want to talk about that had a really poor start uh well first off let me just say this uh with his power play goal in overtime yesterday kareel kaprizov recorded his 69th power play goal of his career tying zach parise in franchise history and that was the wild pr that tweeted that and then the wild retweeted and said haha nice which is great the minnesota wild have very quietly put together an eight one in one in their last 10 record they have won six in a row they are sixth in the nhl and i you know they are one win away from being uh third what did you think of the fact that they had a power play in overtime what did you think i think you've got the opinion on it well I think Blackhawks fans think they were jobbed and I think they're right I and like
Starting point is 01:15:44 that's nothing against the wild but uh Bedard gets rocked open ice by a big hit I thought it was perfectly fine and so did Conor Bedard like he said as much um that was the uh who hit him it was uh Foligno okay all right yeah Marcus I think I don't remember but then Mikheyev comes in and crushes them i mean the puck's right there i don't know how you make that call in overtime i don't know man and that's a tough way you know the blackhawks started so well you know i just told you they're 23rd in the league things aren't going so great anymore you need every point that's a tough way to lose a point it's the most nonsense call that we've seen in a little bit which is funny because it comes after the most nonsense call we've seen a little bit the one on bedard
Starting point is 01:16:31 that they didn't call where you got hit in the glove hands on a breakaway and there's no penalty. Right. And then now they get screwed again. It's ridiculous. Matty, you can throw this up here.
Starting point is 01:16:39 Was it Foligno? Who hits Bedard? Or Erikssonak? Erikssonak, I believe. Yeah, Erikssonak's the one with the puck. So Bedard gets hit by Erikssonak. He checks him. He gets the puck here.
Starting point is 01:16:52 The puck flies right by him and Mikheyev hits Erikssonak. Why? The puck's like right there. Like it's next to him. He was about to play the puck and he checks him he was trying to play the puck like they're both going for the puck which is in between the two of them currently and mccabe just follows through to where the puck is and checks
Starting point is 01:17:13 him and the ref calls this interfere it the ref had generally on wednesday night for whatever reason like generationally bad games the dakota murmurs penalty is one of the most nonsense there was in multiple games there was bad calls i just sometimes they have a bad game or maybe they placed the wrong prop bet who knows so this is this is whoa this is what i'm saying uh the blackhawks need every point minnesota's hot as shit eight one and one in their last 10 look at the shots 37 to 22 in favor of the blackhawks home ice this is your game you should be mad it's even in overtime right this is your game you need two points out of this thing and you just get jobbed And I understand, like, by the time he makes the connection with the hit,
Starting point is 01:17:58 the puck is gone, but he's in the middle of checking while the puck is in between the two of them. I don't know what they were thinking to make this call. To me, that falls well within the rules of clean hit and not interference. Jeff Blashill, after the game, spoke about this as well, and he hasn't been shy in calling out the refs in his postgame pressers lately. he did it for the bedard one and then this is what he had to say about the interference penalty i don't know like the it's a reactionary call that uh i think i think my gut if i was to get
Starting point is 01:18:33 climbing into firman's uh mind is that he thought mickey just went over and hit him because he hit connor but the reality is is uh you know uh right before erickson that got hit he had he had the puck it's not it's not interference it's not interference yeah it isn't it's not he made a mistake the ref did yeah like he's I think what Blasio said there is exactly what happened he thought Mikheyev all of all people Ilya Mikheyev was getting retribution because we know that's what Mikheyev does he's the big guy who's the other team and that's what he the refs like oh how dare you do that Mikheyev no he was the guy had the puck and he was checking him should refs be accountable yeah well be accountable that's not happening but it's overtime uh forget
Starting point is 01:19:26 a challenge i don't want minnesota challenging that or chicago to challenge that i think in overtime i would like it if refs were able to go you know what i'd like another look at that and like no you don't want the game going on forever we always have this conversation but you don't want a game decided by bullshit that's 20 000 people who saw a game decided by bullshit they paid to see but if you have human beings reffing a game you will have human beings making human being mistakes human beings invented televisions yeah and they can re-watch it and and unfuck it yeah i think the problem is that then they'd have to go over to the stupid fucking scorekeeper and then they look at the ipad for a fucking million like that's the thing
Starting point is 01:20:10 is it does really kill any momentum. I've probably said this too many times on the show. Like I'd probably be beating a dead horse at this point. But the NFL has this thing called NFL replay assist where something happens on the field. And if it's clear and obvious that it's the wrong call, they simply just buzz down to the referee and they switch things.
Starting point is 01:20:29 How great would that be? I don't think like we need to have a system where people need to go over to the iPad and anything. It's just have the people dedicated on each game. There can only be 16 on a night. You only need to hire 60 more people or whatever it is, reallocate their time if you already have them employed and just have them watch the game. And if it's clear and obvious while you're watching the television that a mistake is made, you can fix it. And another league that's bigger than you and has as much more foresight in the way things are going has done it.
Starting point is 01:20:57 And they do with much success. And everybody's kind of happy with it. Do you think that the NHL is just cheap? Because that's what I think is going on here. I think it's just cheaper not to have that. And I think it's so funny. a lot of times people like why is that our intermission halftime show or whatever and it's like oh you're carting out the corpse of kid rock again uh the reason is that he's cheap it's not
Starting point is 01:21:18 expensive to hire some of these acts right coming up uh someone who was big a minimum of 12 years yes that's why like when people were like tayden mccray i was like you have no idea what you're talking about this is a big get yeah absolutely this is actually a really big get um i'm reminded of a story i heard at a puck talks years ago rip puck talks tyler dello back when he was a blogger now with new jersey no he's the assistant gm of the carolina hurricanes right right right he used to be a blogger and that turned into a job with the analytic staff of the edmonton oilers and he was how long that lasts not long but he was watching what was going on and he told the story of like he was overwhelmed by how quickly things were happening and dallas eakins who was
Starting point is 01:22:08 the coach at the time sort of goes over to him he's like it's a little harder when you don't have replay huh and you know it's dello poking fun at himself but i always remember that story for situations like this because you have the best refs in the world you know whether we like it or not and the game happens so fast that that incident happened bang bang but a ref who does have the power
Starting point is 01:22:33 of replay like Jesse just said with the television would easily be able to just buzz down and go yeah no yeah switch it like it would waste a maximum of 30 seconds and you could pull somebody off the ice you just have one ref out there one linesman oh you the way
Starting point is 01:22:49 you've always advocated for no less people on the ice man I saw No, it's three on three. Throw an extra ref out there. No, we need, you know what? We need another linesman to fake drop the puck. Let's do it. Man, they've gotten bad.
Starting point is 01:23:00 They've been terrible. I'm telling you, once you notice it, you'll never not notice it. It'll never not piss you off. Oh, as someone who used to need to clap for every puck drop on the stream, I'd be like, you guys suck. Ah, you're screwing this up.
Starting point is 01:23:13 My biggest pet peeve with the fake puck drops is when they kick somebody out of the face-off circle after the ref fooled them. Yeah. so sorry the lines the linesman will fool matthews with a fake drop and then kick him out because he fell for the fake drop i bet what do you do you think he was just like psych and then like matthews will turn and yell at him like no get out of here and then willie's gotta go take the fucking draw well and here's the sort of thing that i start to wonder is uh
Starting point is 01:23:44 again tim peel bless him gave the game away um on a hot mic one day he called a penalty i guess he wasn't all that happy with it and then he was looking to call a penalty against the other team to even it up so all these theories that we've had for years were correct he said it into a microphone we were right he's rigging the game yeah that is match literally rigging the game so that one team gets a penalty now you ever wonder if they're keeping score like you know i screwed that up i didn't screw it up bad enough that i'm gonna give them a penalty i'm gonna give them this face off yes i'm serious like i i absolutely if you found out that was a story today would your heart rate even nothing you're saying is crazy no no this isn't the epstein files no damn hot damn
Starting point is 01:24:41 which are a hoax and also the democrats are in them even though they're a hoax anyway no sorry you can't he can't he can't help himself guys i think he might be in them he's a dog and a squirrel i don't think yeah anyway it's squirrel yeah except the squirrel is fucking the world i 100% think refs will kick out one guy at one point or if he's like ah that wasn't really fair he'll do with the next guy just yeah for the sake of it yeah i golfed with you in the summer i didn't golf with you in the summer guess who's winning the draw yeah i think bedard and we've seen this a few times needs to sign some more sticks yeah because i don't think his team gets fair whistles yet i don't think he's earned the respect of the referees yet that happens in a sydney crosby line
Starting point is 01:25:24 if that happened to Sidney Crosby in 2007 I know which way the call is going if that happened to Sidney Crosby's on the ice now I know which way
Starting point is 01:25:32 the call is going and by the way they're opposite the refs used to hound Sidney and he used to scream and yell and you can't believe this
Starting point is 01:25:41 people of my generation will remember and I'm only 37 that Sidney Crosby was labeled as a whiner yeah oh man that kid's whining
Starting point is 01:25:50 what kid you mean the one with four of his own teeth poking out of his lip yeah they used to beat the shit out of him yeah yeah you whiner yep hey steve what do you got there on the table oh oh this this is an aura frame oh tell me about it well you can upload photos to it but also live photos and also videos but what happens if you don't want a photo on there anymore
Starting point is 01:26:18 well here's the problem with aura frames it's stuck there forever wait no it's not you can just delete it right from your phone with the aura app it is the perfect gift because it is unscrew upable from your parents and or in-laws you put the photos on it you hand it to them and hooray they have an that's frame the coolest thing about it is it's in their house and you're controlling the photos which if it's your parents and you're giving it to them then like yeah that's awesome because you put all the pictures of the kids or your dog or whatever it is but then you could also just like give it to your friend yeah oh yeah you can definitely screw with your friend say you got a friend away at university right and you're like giving to your
Starting point is 01:26:59 friend and then it's just like inside bits with all you with your friend and you're just changing the photo or like funny things happen it's a good way to connect with somebody it doesn't have to just be like in-laws and family is there sound on the video uh there's the option okay because that's kind of cool because if you could have the sound on and it's somebody's birthday you could record a happy birthday message it appears in the photo and you have it right there at the back and you have it start at 4 a.m you know you know what i'm saying now yeah they might not like that unlimited free photos and video you can pre-upload photos before it ships personalize your gift share the photos and videos effortlessly and there's a gift box included effortless

Now, Husker was just apparently extended. Conroy's contract has not
Starting point is 01:29:27 been offered yet. And Don Maloney said there's a process, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. We need to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I say blah, blah, blah, blah, because Don Maloney was very clearly full of shit in both interviews. I have no problem saying that everybody else is saying it to not worried about that. What is interesting is the blowback has been so heavy against the flames that now they have leaked that Conroy's contract is on its way. And it's funny because I think Don Maloney sometimes probably lives in a bubble where nobody tells him no, except for the owner. And so when he gets actual feedback from real people who don't need something from him, and he says bullshit like that, I think that it probably, maybe, makes him go,
Starting point is 01:30:15 oh okay i guess i should i think i i genuinely think that the flames upper management i'm talking above craig conroy thought that the 96 point team they put on the ice last year was real and no disrespect to the flames they got 96 points nobody nobody nobody nobody believed that was repeatable nobody i thought they were better than this but someone's got to be in last And which they are, by the way, there are 30 first in points, but by points percentage, they're last last. And so it was almost looking like, oh, well, Craig Conroy might pay the price for the team that he's not really allowed to assemble. No. And it's interesting because Tampa scored twice in the first one minute and 26 seconds. That's and then four times in the first 10 minutes. the third fastest to four goals start to a game in franchise history against them now uh calgary got one back in the third but it was five to one tampa's been a wagon recently they have they're first in the uh first in the atlantic division um what is interesting here in calgary for me
Starting point is 01:31:22 is if this conroy extension is announced i don't know in the next month whatever it is whatever it takes. Does the contract extension, and I don't think anybody can answer this, come with a little more flexibility to do what Craig Conroy wants to do? Because this is the thing, right? The reason that fell apart for Dubas and Channing in Toronto is Dubas said, I'd like to stop running stuff up through Channing. I've got this Pittsburgh offer that is certainly not real, and I definitely don't know about it. And they're going to let me do whatever I want. Do I want to do that? Or do I want to do what toronto does which is i got to run it through uh a guy who i'm not particularly getting along with right now i'm wondering about craig conroy here and going okay you sign this
Starting point is 01:32:04 extension and everybody likes craig conroy has great things to say about him i have nothing against him nothing no are you allowed to be the general manager you want to be and you know i i say this with like i i account like guys like dave known as who i'm just like what you're the vp of what uh he's the vp of guy who's worked in hockey for a long time like i'm like him and maloney at the helm oh my god yeah no offense flames fans i'm glad i'm not a fan of the team that's an old boys club yeah that that man that's that's the murray edwards drinking buddies club yeah man like first your question does this give craig conroy more power lmao no you want to you want an idea of how difficult uh craig conroy's job is oh jerome mcginley's in that box the calgary
Starting point is 01:32:59 flames management group is don maloney president hockey operations craig conroy general manager dave nonis senior vp of hockey operations assistant general manager brad pascal vp of hockey operations assistant general manager peter hanlon agm jerome mcginley special advisor to the gm that's a toronto ass front office it might even be bigger actually i don't think that that front office could survive without jerome mcginley there you you need to know that there's somebody with a brain in that group and i know craig conroy is also got a brain um but and i just you're being harsh i i know i'm serious i'm dead serious i am sick and tired of the flames and their bullshit i am i'm done no say it in the camera i'm so sick of it it's no one more time
Starting point is 01:33:48 I am sick and tired of the Flames and their bullshit. I think Conroy is a good GM. I think he could be a better GM if he had more power. I think Aguinla is smart. I have nothing against Hanlon or the other guy. What's his name? But the two major Calgary Flame red flags are Don Maloney, who very clearly does not talk to human beings who don't need something from him very often, and Dave Nonis.
Starting point is 01:34:12 And frankly, how many franchises do we need to go through? Like Dave Nones was making horrible decisions in Toronto more than a decade ago. You know what? And not surrounding himself with the brightest lights. I don't know, man. I'm not. Listen, straight up. I'll be honest.
Starting point is 01:34:29 I'm not a fan. I'm sure I'm going to get some blowback on this one. But I will just tell you, I am so shocked by the amount of talent that's left this team in the last few years. They've been able to create and pull it. Like, they've got a good young group of players. I'm concerned that they don't realize that they don't have a star outside of Dustin Wolfe. I don't know what Zane Parekh's going to be.
Starting point is 01:34:54 I'm excited for him. He didn't start great. He's going to be great. He's going to be great. Yeah. Coronado looks like he's going to be very good. Obviously, he signed the extension. There's other players here that are going to be very good.
Starting point is 01:35:05 Conor Zeri. Yeah, Conor Zeri. Who's the kid with the Wranglers who's like the Russian kid? Leo Glynn. Oh. Mitch. No, not yet. No.
Starting point is 01:35:13 Gritton. Gritton. Matt Faye Gridden. I knew there was an M. Gridden, Grideen. I think this team is going to blunder its way into Gavin McKenna, and Don Malone is going to take credit for it. And I just think, and good, Calgary needs a stud.
Starting point is 01:35:30 They need a stud. The league's better when Calgary's good. Man. Calgary is rocking when the Flames are good. It's just driving me crazy that these guys, like, really? of of all the of all the brilliant minds in hockey and a market that just loves the flames this is the best we can do at the upper management level and i'm i'm saying above craig conroy because i actually think craig conroy is doing a really good job so two points here
Starting point is 01:35:55 with dave nonis he was the vp of hockey ops and general manager of the canucks um when they were on their way up and they were immediately much better after he left some people would say well that's actually a badge of honor for him because he left them i would listen to that position which is yeah fine then he was agm of the leafs uh or director of hockey hockey ops senior vp of hockey ops whatever the through some of the darkest years of the franchise then he was gm again through some of the darkest years of the franchise then he goes to anaheim scout team consultant not exactly a position of power by the time he's named assistant gm in anaheim from 2019 until 2022 again some of the darkest years of that franchise
Starting point is 01:36:47 he joins a flames team that's hot and good and good yeah and becomes the cp the the the freaking senior vp of hockey ops and assistant general manager through some of the what is now becoming some of the darkest years of the franchise you think brad treliving who seems like an affable guy you can say what you want about the moves he makes as a gm and i would i would i would level with you i think some of them are good and some of them are bad not a lot of people are happy with him here right now yeah uh do you think brad treliving like people forget that he resigned this is this was going to be the second point jesse walked away earlier the show was like there's 32 of these jobs right and he quit now he quit knowing no he quit he quit before dubas
Starting point is 01:37:35 was let go did he pretty sure i don't remember well either way he had a pretty good idea the door was going to be open right or at minimum you know what these guys are starting to make me look like shit i quit how many gms quit when patrick waugh was i think assistant gm of the of the avalanche and quit a lot of us were like yeah that'd be a weird decision if most people made it but that's patrick waugh yeah he's he's a little out there he's also patrick why he's a hall of famer he'll get back in somehow yeah brad treliving is none of those things brad living is this he's got a really cuddly fuzzy personality you know whatever you think of his moves that guy quit as a gm that's crazy i think this team is a massive pain in the ass
Starting point is 01:38:28 yep i do too i think that they could be a bigger deal in calgary if they weren't run by um decision makers listen do i think the day of knownness is a stupid guy no do i think don maloney's a stupid guy no the word i would use is out of touch and i well my biggest issue with dave known as in toronto and this is 10 12 years ago was he refused to learn hockey is this way the leafs were at that time it's hard to believe anti-analytics not just neutral on it no we don't want that very hardcore not analytics and and so i look at i look at these two guys specifically and i go is that the best you can do? Are they really and truly, for the money you're paying them, going out there and trying to learn and to grow and to move in the way that hockey is moving? Because I think Craig
Starting point is 01:39:19 Conroy, to me, and I've said this on our live stream because somebody asked me about this the other day. And I just said, I was like, I said on the stream, I was like, I'm so tired of the Flames. I'm so tired of hearing about the Flames. And I said, I like the crazy thing about the Flames. I like all their players. It's not the players. But I feel like everybody's going to the sword fight with a shield and a sword and Craig Conroy has to use the shield on his back because I don't know that I think he's going into the sword fight with a sword but he's got to watch his back and I feel like that is that's the Calgary Flames and it's you know what Calgary looks like Toronto 12 years ago I mean good good group of young player players wasn't a star yet
Starting point is 01:40:00 we didn't have a star yet for a decade and a half Dave Nones has had a type and that type is bad hockey teams yeah now in fairness to Dave Nones um I don't know if anyone's gonna have success there like we just listen to the conversation we just had it was about can Craig Conroy do what craig conroy wants and the guy above him is maloney and even him i think he's just the dartboard like maloney and brad for most of their career were like this like through arizona through calgary it's ownership we've said it for years they have the most some of the most it's a high bar there's a lot of them but they have some of the worst meddling owners in all of hockey well i look at i look at uh vancouver too and i asked somebody who would know the other
Starting point is 01:40:56 day uh what kind of position do you think ownership has put jim rutherford in and they just said and this person doesn't isn't known for like blowing up things whatever they said definitely not a good one no of course not and those two those two franchises i feel like canadian markets are being robbed because of just ownership who i would rather be surrounded by people who say yes to me And I accused the Oilers of this pre-Conor McDavid era, and I think it was true. And actually, during the Conor McDavid era, we saw it, right? How many former Oilers were sitting in the press box with the owner because the owner's like, yeah, I'm a rich guy and I own a, you know, whatever.
Starting point is 01:41:36 And they were getting nowhere. But what happened recently in the last three to four years is the Oilers actually said, OK, we're going to start to take this seriously now. And whose fault is it when they're bad? the media because that's who billionaires blame every time something goes wrong can i give you guys some quotes from eric francis when he wrote about bradshaw living's leaving of the franchise back in april of 23 that back up a lot of what is or this discussion is yep so don maloney in his uh press conference where bradshaw living they were revealing that bradshaw living chose to left
Starting point is 01:42:13 to leave said today is not a good day for me said maloney lamenting the awkward scene hours before the stanley cup playoff started bradshaw living is a good friend and a very good hockey man he left us for his reasons but we move on that's what maloney said about the situation that was before the playoff started yeah it was april 17th so i don't think shanee was in touch at that point because he'd already offered dubas an extension at that point you said this was april april 17th 2023 wow yeah that's definitely before dubas got fired yeah so he didn't have a job lined up true living didn't but um he probably had some little feelers out there that he could probably get another job but he didn't have a job lined up he wasn't open yet yep so eric francis wrote
Starting point is 01:42:58 about the uh the day when maloney was doing his press conference after nine years as gm brad living made the difficult decision to do what few team architects ever do walk away this was without question without question true living's choice he fired the flames not the other way around his contract was set to expire on june 30th but on monday morning five days after quietly informing then assistant gm don maloney he was done it was made official i mean he's in the hot seat in toronto but like objectively that's ballsy well it was ballsy but objectively the right choice like there's no guarantee he gets brought back in calgary and even if he gets fired by the leafs tomorrow he turned it into a pretty high paying job for a couple years i think steve that
Starting point is 01:43:48 they were absolutely bringing him back which is why they wouldn't allow him at the draft table which is why they keep using toronto as leverage and won't do business with toronto like they're they are salty about that and listen you don't make a trade with the team like i get it fine you're salty. But I do think that him leaving wasn't the problem. I think him signing somewhere else so quickly was. And he caught them off guard. I think Maloney thought he would be with Brad for a long time after the many years together. He probably thought it was going to continue past that contract extension. And he decided that I've had enough of meddling ownership. And in this article bean who is the john bean i believe who's the ceo at the time uh when bradshaw living was
Starting point is 01:44:31 there with don maloney he said something i think is fascinating that just backs up everything that this entire conversation is about because at in the press conference when bradshaw living was leaving and the calgary flames were still struggling at the time they weren't the 2021 calgary flames bean said this i'm not allowed to ever use the word rebuild said bean echoing the age this is eric francis now echoing the age-old sentiment of an ownership group whose penchant for trying to remain forever competitive has has left the team stuck in the middle for two decades not good enough to be a serious competitor but not bad enough for a top draft pick i think it's so funny that this is written back in 2023 and we sit here in 2025 and these words could have
Starting point is 01:45:16 been written yesterday it's not a damn thing that's changed and you know what's crazy is is they've done a good job of collecting prospects in that imagine they'd done a great one they could be they could be next like this year they maybe they'd be bad but next year they could be this year's ducks i don't think they're in uh in line for a long rebuild i really don't you have a goalie of the future you use the forbidden one oh no we need more maloney's job to word it differently like a parent trying to convince their child to eat something. You got to remember, though,
Starting point is 01:45:50 Domiloti's history is the Coyotes, which was all spin. Remember the bullshit we were fed year after year, owner after owner, arena after arena. And Don was really good at managing up.
Starting point is 01:46:03 He was there when the, I think he was there with Bear Away. He was there with the NHL. He was there with whoever was before the NHL. Remember the NHL owned the Coyotes for like three years. Bear Away, there's a name.
Starting point is 01:46:15 That's been a while. Here's a guy who was like, you know what? Don't worry. This year, it's going to be better. And they did have that one year. They went to the conference finals. True Living was a part of that group, too. And that was exciting.
Starting point is 01:46:25 And then they instantly went to the work stoppage right after that. It's almost like how the Calgary Flames had one really good season, and then they haven't been anything. Isn't it funny, Jess? I think Don Maloney is really good at working with bad owners. Yes. I think that is one of his specialties. He knows how to manage up with these people who aren't good at running these hockey teams.
Starting point is 01:46:47 Is he good at it? I think he's good at getting a paycheck out of them. Yeah. I mean, from that respect where he can keep the job with the bad owners and do their bidding. He's not good at building a good hockey team in those circumstances, but he's good at being underneath that bad owner and doing what they want. They just make such a disproportionate amount of noise. like they're so loud and so bullish on their own bullshit like it's you know we i've called barry trotz the worst gm and i need to reconsider that because he's got one of the worst teams in
Starting point is 01:47:26 the nhl and he's open for business you're one of the worst teams in the league that's the right move i don't trade guys craig conroy is not a bad gm no he's not allowed to do that he's worse than a bad gm he's a gm who's not able to do what what he wants his hands are tied behind his back by the owner i mean the dumbest thing you could do like man i thought you were a billionaire i thought you were a rich guy why are you charging what why are you paying craig all this money when you're in charge it's just you and you got this front office packed to the brim six guys you've got a president you've got a gm you've got a senior vp you've got a vp both of them are also assistant general managers then you have a guy who's just an assistant general manager so you literally have
Starting point is 01:48:20 your assistant gms ranked one two and three yep right because notice senior then there's vp and then there's blank plus jerome again la you know i had another one in there what's what's one more get it's crazy that there's six guys in that front office and look at that look at that there's six men pictured there none of them make decisions with the calgary flames how many how much money is on this page right now annually not one of them gets to make a decision with what goes on with the calgary you know i want not one people have have made fun of kevin adams because he's got to run even like a player for a fourth round pick up the chain right yeah i feel like it's got to be the same for craig conroy which is why i hope in this extension that he gets he gets a
Starting point is 01:49:12 little bit more leeway terry pagula is way smarter than murray edwards because he's like apparently doesn't even spend a whole lot of time in north america anymore well there's the other problem well that like terry pagula at very least when someone calls him and goes hey i want to work for the sabers and i want to make decisions he has the dignity to tell them well no no i do that yeah terry pagula is smart because he doesn't employ anyone to run his team yeah what do i need to spend money on a six-person front office when i'm gonna make all the damn decisions kevin Adams came in with zero experience as a general manager and fired all of
Starting point is 01:49:45 his assistants and just ran the operation with a couple buddies that dude is smithers running around an empty power plant yeah how much time this is this is different how much time do you think it takes Craig Conroy to if he's successful convince them on a move he
Starting point is 01:50:01 doesn't no no I know no but he does like he does he's made moves they've been they've done good things they've sold they have they have sure so you know how long did it take him to convince them that chris tan of to dallas was okay or that's a door off to vancouver was okay or you know like that that to me those precious hours minutes whatever those were deals fall apart right though you know and and that that for me has got to be like craig conroy part of his compensation has got to be a
Starting point is 01:50:29 good chunk of his compensation's got to be he's being paid to be patient with his own group i I don't see the Calgary Flames as dynamic, and I think they could be. And this is the thing. I don't think Don Maloney is stupid. I don't think Dave Nones is stupid. But I do see, at least I saw it specifically in Dave Nones' case. Don, I suppose I'm far less familiar with in a Toronto context. I see a stubbornness to embrace the now that is also reflected by the owner.
Starting point is 01:51:00 I mean, unless the Calgary Flames are just a tax write-off for you, I think you should get out of the way and let grown men make grown men decisions. I don't understand what you're doing. What do you pay them for? What do you pay them for? You know what's funny? I think if you owned a professional hockey team, you might run it like Murray Edwards. Yeah, that's bad.
Starting point is 01:51:22 That's the difference is I've never claimed I'd be a great owner. I think you would be in on every decision. I have to tell you, I wouldn't. I honestly wouldn't. I'd be like, you know what? I'm going to give you my opinion. but i did hire you for this right like i did hire you for this i'm gonna let you i i didn't schlep schlep it for you know in junior rinks for 20 years i don't think you would be
Starting point is 01:51:45 so hands-off and like you don't even care about you're not even north in north america you would be like i want to make lineup decisions tonight i wouldn't have to uh they would just watch the lfr and they would be like now can you imagine if i still made lfr yeah yeah you still need to make lfr yeah yeah you couldn't stop no i couldn't possibly it'd be the most watched thing in the universe imagine mark cuban had a youtube channel in like the early 2000s oh my god you would be jerry jones jerry jones basically has an lfr with the amount of press he does post game and pre-game he he'll just do scrums with guys like he walks in the locker room and then all the reporters are there he's just in those scrums that's you're jerry joe do you think that's what it is gm ever
Starting point is 01:52:34 has to wonder what jerry jones is thinking no his gm's his son well and here's the thing jesse and also he's the gm what does jerry jones have oh is he i thought he was the owner he's the gm owner yeah yeah oh for real yeah yeah that's not an exaggeration that's what the flame should have jerry jones makes well the thing with decision i don't think murray edwards is in north america as much as it used to be anymore i think he's an older guy and he's retired and he's spending some time in europe and whatever it's like so then then actually let them do their thing so they're a tax write-off like a boat but you're saying what does jerry jones have rings he's got three championships three rings yeah zero rings since 89 for calgary damn one finals appearance
Starting point is 01:53:18 hey it's better than leaves uh one finals appearance that should have been a cup should they should have won that i still think i was man i was rooting so hard for them me too um it's uh it's a i find i can't imagine what it's like to be a flames fan because i am so frustrated every time the flames come up and it's not about the flames and toronto rumors which is never going to happen no it's about the flames versus the flames yeah yeah it's about common sense versus no because we said so i hate that shit it's like edmonton versus their own fans in when it comes the goaltending i hate that shit everybody knows what the problem is everybody can see what the problem is no well actually you're dumb but you know what the oilers have back-to-back cup final
Starting point is 01:54:02 appearances yes and the best player in the world yes second i think the best two players in the arguably yeah right uh yeah things are going bad right now and there's every reason to believe that they can turn it around calgary doesn't have that yeah yep and i just yeah we doing nathan mckinnon erasure oh damn yo he really does he belongs he belongs no you're yeah okay producer drew like you're absolutely right i'm sorry no you're right listen yo i love him again you don't have to he's unreal like what incredible uh anyway that's uh that's enough on that i think new character you need to work on your accent stevie jones stevie joe owner of the league i don't even know how he talks he's from arkansas arkansas all i know is the south park thing hey
Starting point is 01:54:49 my eyes aren't too far apart that's that's the only thing i know about jerry jones a great episode you should watch the jerry jones documentary on netflix it's a bit biased but uh very good it's very very good it's great sports theater yeah which you love does it show him protesting outside that school no no it doesn't no okay well steve it's you should watch it watch it this is gonna be his game of thrones i know it it's gonna be his sports game of thrones i will not steve loves to react to something that he has not seen. Knows nothing about, but then
Starting point is 01:55:19 knows one thing from the internet about it. Can I watch his documentary in 46 parts on TikTok with a video game being played about it? You're like, oh, I've seen that Hodor scene on Twitter. That's all I know about him.
Starting point is 01:55:35 You know, Steve, I will guarantee you it will be more entertaining than watching a supercut of Austin Matthews goals. Probably not. By the way, something to mention before we sort of get close to wrapping this up, unless we're going to do a press conference. I'm happy. You should be wrapping.
Starting point is 01:55:50 Canadians and Mike Matheson have made progress on extension talks. Four to five years probably could be announced today or tomorrow. And that's according to several, several reporters. Yeah. I mean, you know what? He kind of rocks, though. He's a really good defense. Actually, it looks like it's broken.
Starting point is 01:56:06 It looks like unconfirmed five years times six mil. That's great. I love that. I love that for them. Five years? How about frigging Mike Matheson? He's gotten, Mike Matheson in his career has gotten an eight and a six-year deal. Yeah, it's sick. That's, wow.
Starting point is 01:56:27 The Habs are spending a lot of money on D, but it should also be said that they're good. Well, let's fire the extra. You don't think that's, why do you love this so much? I think he's a really good player. And I think six million when the salary cap next year is going to be one hundred and five. And then the following year, it's going to be one hundred and fifteen, maybe one hundred and twenty. So he's going to be making towards the midsection of this deal because he's thirty one right now. It does take him till he's older.
Starting point is 01:56:55 But we're talking about a guy who's going to take up three or four percent of your cap in three years. I don't know. I don't hate it. He's going to fall back down the lineup like he's not going to be their top defenseman forever. but you're getting uh like like here's the thing you can pay mike matheson or next summer you can try to replace him does it say anything about david reinbacker no they pick fifth overall it says they should have picked mitch mitch cough even the even with the season he's had i feel bad for reinbacker because he's always injured he hasn't like played hockey which you
Starting point is 01:57:27 need to do um interesting interesting what well i don't think in order to develop you need to play hockey it was super weird when they've drafted rheinbacher too because it was like he's got a he's got a high floor but a low ceiling i'm like for a fifth overall pick really okay i'm i'm gonna operate under the assumption he achieves everything that they want him to which is why i'm looking at this deal a little sideways just because of that but he was only i think he was only ever supposed to top out at like a low top four defenseman that's the part for me that was weird about the rheinbacher pick i hope i wonder if he turns into trade fodder uh yeah i don't know yeah yep interesting anyway uh that that will be it for us but stream tonight five o'clock coming back
Starting point is 01:58:13 getting ready washington toronto uh and then uh steve you're doing a stream tomorrow night sure am and jesse is keeping his mustache until sunday and remember last few days of november My wife is thrilled She can't wait for me To get rid of this thing Same Get those donations in We're coming for you
