Yeah. Less of a stinky boy using Mando. Boy, I know a hockey team that could have used those. You know, Steve didn't come in here in a good mood.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Listen, can I put you guys in a good mood? I thought that somebody might be spicy today, Jesse. I thought our young boy, Steven, might be spicy today. So to bring down the temperature to start, I would like to read for you the lines six years ago. I think six years ago. I'm going to beat your ass. In March.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Are you ready? I'm going to beat your ass. Are you ready? Okay. All right. So at forward, Zach Hyman, Don Tavares, and Mitch Marner. Good line. That's actually.
Starting point is 00:04:25 That's a great line. I don't hate that. I would take that today. Second line, Austin Matthews. Good. Andreas Janssen. Not great. Kasperi Kapanen.
Starting point is 00:04:35 All right. We're going down. Third line at center. That's right. William Nylander, Patrick Marleau, and Connor Brown. And then the fourth line, Freddie the Goat Gauthier, Tyler Ennis, and Moore. Which Moore? Which Moore?
Starting point is 00:04:53 Trevor. Trevor Moore. Oh, Trevor Moore. If you took all of those players in their prime and put them on a team today, that team's pretty good. Yeah. Crazy how that works. It's just that they all didn't exist in their prime at the same time.
Starting point is 00:05:07 You want to check the defense on this? Because that's where it gets real fun. You ready? Your first pair, Morgan, Riley, Ron, Hainsey. Hell yeah, brother. Second pair, Jake Gardner and Nikita Zaitsev. The all-defense line. And then your third, Jake Muzzin and Travis Spinarama-Dermott.
Starting point is 00:05:27 And your goaltenders, Freddie Anderson and Garrett Sparks. What is it? What's the matter? Why are you making that facha? you know what's great is um they've they're better on paper now right they are so they've improved so much why are you so no like the proof is in the pudding folks uh here they are again they're not gonna win the division hey here they are again hey and we're all super confident in them heading into the first round okay here they are again okay okay attaboy okay you know what
Starting point is 00:05:59 i hope they preserve this i hope everyone is re-signed including brendan shanahan by the way easily the funniest outcome and and i'm calling it take it to the bank leafs lose early in these playoffs yeah shanahan gets fired they spend somewhere between 125 and 150 million dollars to preserve the team that he built they will fire brendan shanahan and then be like Marner and Tavares are saying. Yeah, but like, I mean, what's the new president supposed to do? He only just got here.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Give me the will to live. That's their job. The will to carry on. The will to get out of bed in the morning. Are you ready for a Sam Bennett $80 million contract? Oh, man. That's going to be so somewhat... Bad idea.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Jesse, in the group chat yesterday, you were like, okay, so like he's never had 30 goals. Nope. He's never done this. He's never done that. We all agree. He's never had 50 points.
Starting point is 00:06:58 are you shitting he's never had 50 points in an nhl season okay and i was like yeah okay i could see how that's risky and then someone i won't say who said it's giving david clarkson vibes and i went oh oh yep so that's they're not gonna be able to do it though i'm pro ben because they're not going to be able to afford it because they're bringing back the team that stinks adam they are bringing back the team that cannot do it adam when you woke up this morning yo and then you walked into the studio did you think that today was gonna be let's just dump on the leafs day and well i'm at a max of 10 angry at this team i just play an episode from last year like they have the same problems did last night's loss does it warrant this level of heightened anger at this
Starting point is 00:07:55 organization for some say no say no for some there's a window behind adam a lot of you can't see it and you are going through it listen marty genetti style me and my newly deodorized ears uh have a different perspective and craig berube said it perfectly after the game last night jesse What did Craig Berube say to the audience last night? What did he say when you were there for postgame? Are you talking about him talking about rest? Yeah. Yes.
Starting point is 00:08:20 What did he say? He did tell us that it looks like his guys need a bit of rest. And Sunday is a scheduled day off for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they're taking another one today. Right. So he said, we're going to take some rest tomorrow, and then we're going to get ready for the game on Saturday. It looks like we need rest.
Starting point is 00:08:37 They have been on the road. Even before Four Nations, they were mostly on the road. they were on a western road swing and then they go into they get uh they they went from hold on edmonton calgary seattle vancouver away and then they go to four nations and some of the best players on this team go to four nations right the top three and then they come back they're uh away one two three four five six seven do we have any of their first nine games they're away seven of nine games violin music we can play right now they play two home games since january steve when i arrived at scotia bank arena around 10 30 or something on yesterday to watch morning skate
Starting point is 00:09:26 optional skate mark masters said something that i did not realize hold on masters nation the masters nation all right one of the best in the biz said something that i did not realize And I was like, holy moly, that kind of matters. This homestand that the Leafs are on right now is their first three-game homestand since the first week of December. Oh, my God. Wow. Well, you're burying the lead a little bit, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:09:54 No, they were talking about canceling yesterday's game. Right? They were talking about postponing it because they're tired. Go on. What was that like? Do you want me to respond? How close was the game to being canceled? Go on.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Do you want me to respond with sarcasm every time? Yes. This team doesn't deserve our respect. They don't deserve to be taken seriously. What? Why? Respect is earned. So five, six wins on the road in a row after four nations,
Starting point is 00:10:28 that's not respectful? I don't fuck. Dude, every one of us had this game circled. Yeah. And I will grant you that. Very important game last night. We all had it circled. They had two days off.
Starting point is 00:10:41 They're at home. Panthers don't have Ekblad. They don't have Marchand. They don't have Kachuk. Marchand was an addition. They don't have Ekblad. They don't have Kachuk. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:51 All right? Yep. The Leafs looked like they were trying. They looked like they were trying and failing to me. The Panthers looked like they were playing a Thursday-ass game. that was regular the Leafs were uh futzing around doing the same things they did yes last year against the Bruins yep dump and don't chase dump and don't chase dump and don't chase uh and the playoff conversation is starting to ramp up
Starting point is 00:11:23 and every conversation with every Leaf fan is identical yep who do you want them to play here we are again in this miserable no man's land where they are so clearly going to make the playoffs and so clearly not favored against a single opponent who do you want them to play go on who do you want them to play you want them to play florida fucks no of course you don't do you want them to play tampa tampa might be the team they have the best chance against because they've played them very well You want them to play Washington? Well, they're not going to play Washington.
Starting point is 00:12:05 No, no, no. But like at any point. Oh, at any point. They could drop to the wild card, Jesse. Let's not put it past them. They absolutely could. Look at the math. Do we want them to play the Devils?
Starting point is 00:12:18 Are we going through all 31 teams? No, no. Just the Eastern playoff teams. They could make the finals. Do we want them to? I don't want them. They could play the Devils. And when they do, I'll give them their kudos.
Starting point is 00:12:28 What about the Canes? With Dougie Hamilton out for the entire season, I would take Leafs-Devils. I'll take a Leafs-Devils. I would favor the Leafs in that series. No Jack Hughes, no Hamilton. The Leafs routinely lose games where they should win because another player's out. I'll never forgive them for it. Yeah, but the Devils have Sheldon Keefe, and I think that'll be rocking a hard place
Starting point is 00:12:50 between the guy who can't win the big series and the team who can't win the big series. That series is guaranteed going seven, and it's going to go to 20 overtimes because neither team is capable of winning. The world's going to end before that series ends. So I'll take that one. Next team. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Carolina.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Carolina? L-M-A-O. No, no, because in that one, too, Frederick Anderson. We have a rock and a hard place. Stop. Freddie versus the Leafs. Man, he's going to have a good game every three games. Stop.
Starting point is 00:13:18 What will they do? Steve, have some fun. I am having fun. This is my version of fun. Have a great time. This is my version of fun. Just believe him. And the Sens, who they always...
Starting point is 00:13:29 No, no, no. The Leafs are losing a set. A million percent. No, no. And the Blue Jackets. Well, you know... Oh, the Leafs play them so well? We didn't make that mistake.
Starting point is 00:13:38 The Leafs play them so well? Make Merzlikens always look like friggin... The Blue Jackets have not... Don Akashic? Merzlikens in particular has not been good as of late. Oh, that's crazy. It's been a good whole season. The Blue Jackets and Rangers have a huge game on Saturday
Starting point is 00:13:52 that is going on at the same time as the game. The Rangers are making the playoffs, kids. If the Rangers can get that win against the Blue Jackets, they can be in a good position there. So the Blue Jackets need to watch out about that playoff spot. You might be thrown out. Could the Leafs beat the Rangers in your city? And that one I would be like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:07 The Rangers, who they beat the last time they played, and the Leafs were the second best team from puck drop onward. They're playing like shit recently. The new guys are not fitting in well. the stars are ordinary ordinary to a painful degree what am i excited about any excitement i'm gonna have right now is manufactured you want my authentic opinion about this yeah they look like the leaf ass leafs so what which part do you want to talk about adam well i mean the tired part does seem to be a factor um and i think it is i think you can't tell me that it's not
Starting point is 00:14:57 and and and i think that there is a really smart reporter named anthony petrelli who put together a really good article before the game last night talking about um how the leafs are top loading their lineup and when you have stars in the lineup what most teams will do is duo them or put them in or spread them out and what they're doing is they're forcing awkward players together when you pay these people this much they're there to elevate the games of others and we have seen them do it and i think you got to look at spreading this out i know i'm not doing this again right well right it does work every time they try it it works what works they have like put knee later on drive a line himself with who i don't martyr did martyrs
Starting point is 00:15:48 done it knee later did it they matthews wasn't in the lineup and they did it without him the dickie d man is here and the ice cream is two bucks and we have a dollar 50 and we're trying to shift the quarters and nickels and dimes around to make two bucks they don't have two dollars it used to be $1.50 it must have been tariffed they keep going shut up they keep going with the same group and if one
Starting point is 00:16:16 of them is off their game they're going to struggle to win if two of them are off their game don't take the ice so here's what I would say Jesse I would say you got to split Nye's Matthews Marner up
Starting point is 00:16:32 I don't think that they have Listen, they might be pooped, and I think they are. Games are going to keep coming. Barkov stuffed them into a locker last night. Yep. I agree with that. I thought they were dead on arrival last night. I didn't think they were very good.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And that might just be because Sasha Barkov's really good, but I'm sorry, you're paid to be better than Sasha Barkov or to be able to overcome that or squeak one through. Wasting time is such a skill, and he's unbelievable. And the Panthers do a few things that I do want to talk about that I'm so impressed with. They just strangle you like a boa. But the thing I would do is I'd break up that top line.
Starting point is 00:17:11 I don't think, and I thought this clip, this in particular, this is going into last night's game. Anthony says, the Leafs have a making of a dominant top line with an emerging power forward in Matthew Nyes, the best scorer in the league since he entered it in Austin. Matthew's in the best two-way winger in the league, or one of the best two-way wingers in the league, Mitch Marner. But the results so far this season have been underwhelming.
Starting point is 00:17:30 with a 26 to 21 goal differential five on five just last season they posted a 24 to 12 goal differential in about 10 more minutes of shared ice time so they've already given up a ton more on their end and that's with much better goaltending and i would say also defense this season yeah i don't think that line is working and it doesn't really matter why it's not working it's time to split it up and you know i i also would say that you know after last night's game i think the leafs have to make a choice um and this is a bigger point last night's game you go and you want to win the division i want to talk a little bit about depth scoring later so let's save that because i that's actually coming alive a little bit which has been nice but the toronto
Starting point is 00:18:16 maple leafs need to decide what kind of postseason they want to have because what i am seeing from this top line long is a they want to have a long postseason right uh if if if they're tired then they're tired okay they went to four nations they're tired okay cool um if you can't if you if you feel like for you you will not get through the first uh round if you finish second or third then you should not have bought at the trade deadline right right so i think the focus has to switch from winning the division which up until last night i was like it's got to be this but in watching last night's game austin matthews doesn't have his legs right now willie doesn't seem to have his legs mitch doesn't seem to have his legs there there are plays where you go oh there they
Starting point is 00:19:04 are but are they dominant for a for a 40 or a 60 no and so for a 10 and we know that matthews has been fighting something right he's this is a career low in goals yeah if we want to talk about that i think austin matthews is injured right yeah and they're they're playing him because 70% of austin matthews is still a 40 goal scorer and that's better than no austin matthews and it's 18 games left he's gonna play through this whatever he has but he's clearly injured well what if you just didn't though what if you played him every other game and you saw what happened because here's the deal in the playoffs people get injured and they sit and we saw it last year with the leafs who did force the boston bruins to seven games last year without austin and without
Starting point is 00:19:47 willing for most of it adam you can't win with that kind of talent out of your lineup i mean florida did but like you can't i think what the leafs need to do is decide is first place in the division the most important thing is it worth sacrificing performance in the first round because what i would do right now is i'd be i'd say to austin and mitch guys we're gonna get whoever we reeves and steves back up hell yeah and re the which i love i love that i didn't even never put that together let's we're going to throw them in the lineup against ottawa uh whatever happens will happen we're going to put it on the rest of the guys and they're going to have to find it and we're gonna get robertson back in the lineup or whatever it is and you've got to go
Starting point is 00:20:29 into that first round knowing that whatever austin's best is this year with this lingering whatever that you have it they got to put him in like he's got to breathe so dragon ball z cryo i don't believe that sitting austin matthews will help his injury because it's will it help his energy i don't i don't know if it'll help at all like i feel like they've they've learned that the best way for him to perform at an optimal level right now whatever that is if it's 70 of what he has if it's 80 if it's 85 it's 50 is to keep playing through it and that sitting is it going to help him be better once he's back on the ice and this is something that's going to have to be dealt with in the offseason and right now this is the player that you're going to get
Starting point is 00:21:17 because he has he's going to play these games we saw when he came back in november after the first stint when he was gone he went to uh christian mccaffrey's doctor to go do voodoo magic and he was good came back and then he was good and then he wasn't really good and then he had to go and then he came back again and then the next time he came back he was good they don't know what's gonna solve it so there's no sense in having him sit okay i think there's an exhaustion factor here i really do and i do think that these people are human beings they're not robots let them let them take a couple games man i i just i don't see okay so you give a 25 year old four or five days to just chill at home you know do your normal like workouts or whatever but don't go crazy
Starting point is 00:22:04 and we'll see you at the end of next week i think you i think you get that towards the early mid april when the season's ending and they're and i and i think that's when they'll do that because right now the division thing how we talked this was a must-win game like and then they didn't and then they didn't so now what you're talking about comes now what i don't think they could have they shouldn't have done that in the last few weeks no look i we talked about two days ago must win game you're not sitting austin matthews for that chris tana have came back because this was an important game and and they all recognize that so i think now you move forward with the early april sitting these guys because the division is going to be out of reach if you
Starting point is 00:22:44 keep losing and i i think this is important i just want to add one quick thing to my point before you jump in sure uh because we have been sarcastic no no i understand that uh with austin if you sit him now and you get some legs under him and then he starts scoring and getting that confidence back then you could sit him again at the end of the season but if he plays like this and then you sit him that last you know game 81 and 82 he's going in probably without that and goal scoring is a confidence thing right that's so that's my only thinking with that just to fully explain my point go ahead guys sorry i saw people so i'm trying to i'm trying to take my before the loss brain and and have it negotiate with my after the loss brain because
Starting point is 00:23:25 my after the loss brain is upset um before the loss though chris taniff made his way back into the lineup and people were like oh gosh hope the leafs aren't rushing chris taniff back and i'm like it's the leafs they listen they haven't had a lot of on ice success oh regular seat no one cares they haven't had a lot of uh on a success the video team is unreal their sports science team is state of the art so any lineup decision they make regarding an injury unless i'm given a reason to not trust it i trust it carte blanche tanov comes back i'm like it's tanov's time to come back matthews plays i trust them that this is the right decision they're obviously gonna do
Starting point is 00:24:17 anything to bring him to 100 they flew him to germany mid-season that's i've never heard of that never heard of that so us being like they should do this and they should get him a little sleepy like it to me it's it's i think we're wasting our breath a little okay because because like listen it's great like all we can we're not in the room all we can do is theorize but their sports science team has earned enough benefit of the doubt that every night I go in with the assumption that the Leafs are playing their best lineup because that's how good they are that's how good their sports science team is they played Tanev because he was ready Matthews plays every night because he's ready so I don't think us being like he should sit means anything
Starting point is 00:25:12 okay i i i do think there's a there is a value in sleeping in your own bed and and 100 and your sports science team is also going to defer to the player oftentimes especially when it's a player like that yeah and especially when the team's goal before the other night was to win the division and listen let me be on the record there's still plenty of time they still can win the division it could all go well right i do believe that i think we're not like as fans and as fans you don't have to uh you don't have to give a shit about any of this but i do think that context matters i really really do and you can't tell you sometimes athletes need to be told no actually you're not at your best and it doesn't matter what you tell me you need to sit for a game
Starting point is 00:25:57 i think have some popcorn that's part of what makes the sports science team good like as a patient there are definitely times where you go to the doctor and you have to advocate for yourself you got to be like no i know my body something's wrong here right um but i think part of being a good doctor physician whatever it is is convincing your patient to do the right thing convincing your patient to do what's best for them so i like to me that's part of the job yeah i don't i don't think the leafs are sitting there going all right so this might jeopardize everything this might jeopardize millions of dollars it might jeopardize everyone's job and it might jeopardize uh uh you know the future of this franchise but this thursday night game against florida
Starting point is 00:26:44 this this has to be ours you know what i mean i i think every game they've earned enough of the benefit of the doubt they're icing their best lineup with the with what is best for the players in mind and if we look in recent memory of two big players who came here with injuries just for the sake of toronto has the most medical resources john klingberg and yanni hockenpah yeah two injured players who signed up to play in toronto because they knew that we're going to get awesome treatment here and we can use toronto to rehab and and get paid i'm still going to stuff i saw a video i'm like oh he's playing with kids hockenpah's around because he knows he's going to get great treatment here and he gets his paycheck and all that and toronto wanted him if
Starting point is 00:27:30 he's healthy but toronto believed in their medical staff so much that they're like okay this guy's broken but we can rehab him and we can possibly get a really good player out of they extended jason spetz's career they extended joe thornton's career like i know joe thornton uh advocated for other older players um there was one player in particular he's like you got to go to toronto and the player decided to go somewhere else and they were one and done after that they weren't able to extend their career um uh Thornton and the other other really underrated success story with the Leafs was Tyler Ennis who was who was brought up on the show earlier was he wasn't he yeah he was he was a part of that uh he was a part of that lineup oh yeah 2019 yeah my bad
Starting point is 00:28:10 two Tyler Ennis references in one show in 2025 from each other been a long time yeah so so yeah I think at the end of the day Austin Matthews doesn't look like Austin Matthews but I trust that they will sit him down if he needs to and that right now he's in the lineup because that's the best way for him to get through this thing. And if he needs to sit and make it better, he will. But I think right now it's just play through it. Yeah, I mean, and then so then that goes to my next point,
Starting point is 00:28:38 which is, okay, so if they're poofed and they think they are, I am for Anthony's idea of moving these lines around. And for me, you know, the question then becomes, okay, well, what? What? yeah and i i've always loved uh i i thought pontus holmberg has actually looked really good next to tavaris nylander i in comparison i disagree i think you're wrong and you're stupid what do you know about hockey did you even play no uh no he shouldn't be playing you don't think
Starting point is 00:29:10 he should be playing at all no okay okay fine maybe not him nick robertson hell yeah here's a guy hell hell yeah brother get him okay hell yeah nick bro nick robertson what if it was a McMahon, Tavares, Robertson line, and that could be second or third line. And then you've got, I don't know. Nylander on the left side is Nylander on the left side. Sometimes. Or do you move Domi to the left side?
Starting point is 00:29:37 No. Could you do, okay. Keep him on the right. He looks great there. And he did, and I want to give him his flowers later on. Do you do like a Lawton, Nylander, Domi, right? Because Domi's a good disher. put Lawton in front of the net
Starting point is 00:29:51 Nylander shoots or can you flip can Marner go somewhere else can you try Domi next to Matthews you know these are the things that Domi next to Matthews worked last year it did and even if you keep
Starting point is 00:30:06 Nyes and Matthews together maybe that's the duo but I think we have to get past this Matthews Marner thing because as we said earlier this season many times many times they've been figured out
Starting point is 00:30:22 we got their number every team's got their number and when Matthews went down in October November Marner played some of the best hockey I've ever seen him play second in the league in goals too 100% but both those guys looked ordinary
Starting point is 00:30:36 had an assist it was a really nice assist but for most of the game he looked ordinary that assist was remember I was talking about earlier how you're like they look a little gassed but then you see flashes of what it could be, and you see Neylander push off, find the seam, you know, laser to Tavares.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Crazy. Crazy goal. But it is, again, at the beginning of the game when he's not gassed yet. Yeah. Okay, I reserve the right to change this on the fly. McMahon, Matthews, Domi. Cool. How is that different than Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi?
Starting point is 00:31:10 It's not that different. In fact, I would say McMahon's got way more foot speed. I've always liked Tavares and marner together i will say that always like that they worked really well tavaris got his most goals with marner and his wing tempted to put them together but okay hear me out here um marner lawton nice or yarn croak uh yarn croak i think probably i like i would put nice there i i think nice let's try nice okay so so give me that second line again so i know i'm doing this
Starting point is 00:31:45 on the fly. You're right. Lawton? McMahon? Give me a sec. Give me a sec. McMahon? Lawton looks awful, I know. McMahon, Matthews, Domi. Marner, Lawton, nice. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:32:02 I know, that's crazy. So now you got Tavares, probably Yarncroke on the left. Have we done Nylander yet? No, we haven't done Willy. Alright, so Tavares, so you're not separate well no you're separating the three kids yeah so kids they're not kids anymore but you know what i mean three of the um yarn croak tavaris willie and that fourth line
Starting point is 00:32:26 sucks holmberg conf florence holmberg off uh robertson camp florence i i like that because that would be a really good energy line i do like the leafs fourth line i think you got to go nice tavarez neutral i think willie is better in a situation where he has the puck more on his stick it's it's funny when you watch i don't like if you talk to them about their games talk to the athletes about their games like they'd be like oh there's no particular thing i'm good i'm good at like all this stuff but like matthews executes really well when he doesn't really have the puck on his stick he's able to get lost in the space in the zone he's good at disappearing he's great at disappearing in a good way complimentary yes yeah that's why i'm like i'm prefacing it by like
Starting point is 00:33:07 these aren't disses but like he's great without the puck and getting lost and willie's i think at his best when he just holds the puck like so in a situation where he can just be on his own and give him his own line with like lawton and i don't know you want to throw yarn croak on the other i i still like tavaris yarn i do too yeah that's why it's like nice would be kind of neat on that line yeah not nice i think would be good nice um lawton nearly it would be a lot of fun because then you get willie to have the opportunity to have the puck on his stick do whatever he wants escape on the other side of this zone and then you got nize in front too being the big body you got lotten hopefully getting his game together well and then you get marner and tavarez here's
Starting point is 00:33:47 here's what i'm trying to do with marner lotten is create a shutdown line the leafs don't really have it yeah so marner lotten yarn crow can skate really well there's some playmaking ability there there's goal scoring ability you don't think tavarez is better defensively or as good defensively is Lawton I think he's very good defensively I mean you gotta have it all throughout your lineup like I yeah but if you think about a shutdown line I feel like you're not there's not any better with Lawton or Tavares if that's your goal like you can accomplish it with JT that's your skatey wee line and then your nice Tavares Nylander line is your big not fun timeline and wouldn't it be nice to get matthews away from certain teams top centers all the time is there a way right like
Starting point is 00:34:36 if you put tavaris can you drag that roster around no damn they don't have that uh we should ask them about that we should ask them about that well this isn't they should have another page for that because this page is to tell you like what the lineups were at the most recent game the mad sign i like the puck video lineups because it shows like all the contracts yeah this this is i love this screen that's it all the time yeah so so what i'm saying is um as a part of the resting thing sometimes it just gets stale with people and i made this same argument in the fall is is even the best best players in the league get a little stale sometimes and they get a little stale together and i'm not saying you can't put them together at the end of the game lord knows
Starting point is 00:35:20 you're going to put them out on the power play together because they're not going to change that power play for anyone or anything uh although it has been better lately yeah it's been good it wasn't good last night yeah yeah but i think my my general point is okay brandon carlo's finding his game next to morgan riley clearly that's not easy because brandon carlo's a very good defenseman and playing next to morgan why i i am sure because i saw him play in boston and was always very impressed i'm not i am i am convinced of the common denominator at this point and it's not because I don't love him. What do they call a lemon?
Starting point is 00:35:51 One of those old cars? No, he's not a lemon. Brandon Carlos is not a lemon. Did Boston sell Toronto a lemon? Yeah. You wondered why I didn't want the Leafs to trade in division. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:06 No, come on. He doesn't look good. Jesse, look what you did. He doesn't look good. Yeah, and who's he playing next to? Has he looked good at all for any stretch this year? Do I know? Let's just be straight.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Has Morgan Reilly looked good at all ever? I got news to have a good stretch uh before after after Berube chatted with him and said you need to be better I got news for you if you're convinced Morgan Riley is bad we might as well start talking about the offseason right now I think he needs to play because they're not doing shit if he's legitimately bad they're not doing shit and he was bad in 2023 and in the playoffs bang who's the best one of the best players on the ice it was weird yeah he had a bad season in 23 we all forget it but it did happen so listen I'm open to it I'm open to it but I don't think he's played well I don't think they've played well together it would be nice if if they could you know get some time to
Starting point is 00:36:50 figure that out uh but at the end of the day why are we trying to force certain lines to work just to accommodate these four guys you go and don't tell me that it has to do with salary because it doesn't you go that is coaching and that is organizational structure and saying to these guys as jesse said twice already legos is it egos are we here to win the cup or are we here to feel good about ourselves you know it's good thing they moved to heaven and earth to keep them together forever well and i think now though like this is where you sit them down and have the conversation and say listen oh yeah no you're gonna teach them stuff now no i don't think you're gonna teach them anything no no tell them okay are you gonna spend the whole show being sarcastic or or am i gonna
Starting point is 00:37:35 to get some some are we going to spend the whole show litigating stuff that we have already covered and are objectively correct about a hundred percent i agree with you but at least let me explore the other possibility no well then we don't have a show heck of a show all right jesse hit the extra like uh okay wearing the belt here the belt of uh i think it's the stone of shame or the stone of being right about uh the leafs futility uh-huh right you want to challenge the champ yeah right i do okay i'm coming for the champ actually so i'm gonna be a uh the the prick champ about this okay and be like why should i give you the honor of fighting oh my goodness you're you're not wow i can't even step in the ring with you no wow
Starting point is 00:38:31 because you're you're you're bringing all this shit that everyone else who's come for the title is brought yeah oh you know maybe they need to sit these guys down do they fuck yeah yeah maybe you know what maybe they're gonna sit these guys down and they're gonna tell them something they haven't heard before they're gonna hear something the berube hasn't tried to tell them they're gonna hear something babcock didn't try to tell him keith didn't try to tell him shanahan dubas living don't i'm not convinced that dubas tried to tell them anything no i am not convinced of that at all in fact i think he did quite the opposite not dereliction of duty i just don't think it's his style no no i think if he had uh taken out his temper on the players a little bit
Starting point is 00:39:13 more often he wouldn't have screamed at all those fans in tampa which was weird i think and awesome but weird i think in retrospect when you like if it is ego then then this team will will have to disintegrate this offseason because you will not win incorrect if you're going to if you're going to do it like that yeah they don't have to do anything adam we've for two years at least we've been like well this is it well and i have a hard time bring them back i have a hard time believing john tavaris would be a guy who would stand in the way of that he seems like a good soldier do anything you ask right and he wants to make millions of dollars and he wants to play here so if the leafs offer him a contract guess what he's doing signing it yeah but i i'm talking
Starting point is 00:39:56 specifically about the line of decisions now talking about but you know the last whatever 18 games or whatever it is oh yeah well he's one guy in the core four right but then it it you go to the other three willie doesn't seem like the kind of guy who gets all bent out of shape so then i ask oh i ask about the first line which is where i started this conversation and i go despite the results despite the numbers listen hockey players may not be advanced stats people some of them are some of them are not the ones that aren't they know they tell you because those numbers are stupid stupid numbers yeah but you're all looking at your goals assists and your points and all and and where the the team stands you're just doing like those numbers my point is clearly
Starting point is 00:40:38 the first line like anthony outlined it's too close to neutral you got to do something else remember when the leafs had three good players who could score and their names were tyler bozak Phil Kessel and JVR. And it was like, man, you can't split those guys up. They score so many goals. But what happened? What happened? They got outscored.
Starting point is 00:40:58 They got, so didn't matter how many goals they scored as a line, they were still in the negative. Which A, tells you the team wasn't very good. B, you can't play them together all the time. You can put them together in certain situations, but you can't. You can't play them together five on five, normal shift like that all the time.
Starting point is 00:41:15 So you gotta do something. And Berube, I will give him credit. yesterday uh he's a hot hand guy he he got out the blender a bit so max domey goes out there for an offensive zone face-off with matthews and marner i think uh wasn't it wasn't even marner i think it was mcmahon or mcmahon yeah yeah and it was like okay you know he'd had the fight yeah he'd had the goal and it's like no okay you got it tonight you got the wheels you go max domey tricked everyone he tricked it because remember he was getting flamed yeah for being like oh yeah you know we don't give a shit about winning the division or whatever his first shift he tried to
Starting point is 00:41:49 kill two people that and i have to say that is the max domey that we saw at the end of last season that i have been advocating for and he can finally be because he's not a center just uh earlier yesterday someone uh posted a clip the old clip of remember when domey was on arizona and knocked out Ryan Kessler oh I forgot about that it was like nine years ago yeah and Kessler's looking at him like hey little boy or whatever and Domi's like all right woof and it was those uppercuts that he fed Nate Schmidt and I remember watching that and just going what happened to that where did that go and that showed up first shift and he's not we I never want to see him play at center again and if he does i'm gonna be mad yeah because unless it's like an emergency right somebody goes
Starting point is 00:42:42 down mid-game obviously but like we spent all season being like holy shit this doesn't work and it didn't and we watched it not work over and over again he's been playing some of his best hockey of his season ever since he got to move to wing and last night i think was his best game of the season i never want to see him in the middle ever again i agree i agree this is the show you're you're you're their dad this is uh in the middle of the second if you want to bring up the shift chart there uh that i was talking about when domi was out there with mcmahon and matthews uh it was it was just uh hey this guy has got it going tonight so we're gonna play we're gonna they're obviously changing lines this wasn't i don't think at the stoppage
Starting point is 00:43:26 but it's it was an extended couple it was an extended couple seconds i guess in this shift where Matthews, McMahon, and Domi got to go out there because Domi had it going. And Craig Berube was like, I got to try something here in the middle of the game to see if I can get things going. And then Marner came out towards the end of that shift. And then Matthew Nyes went out there as well.
Starting point is 00:43:51 But by that time, Austin Matthews was off. So Nyes was kicked off that line at that point. You know what's great about Max Domi playing great? Here, here, keep it on the screen. Scroll down to Domi. yeah man i wonder when the leafs penalties were nah yeah when when he was off there's him in the box and also the penalty kill because he ain't on it yeah like any gap oh okay he's either in the box or the rest of the team is someone on the
Starting point is 00:44:23 leafs is in the box whether it's max or someone else it's just i don't know you can it's very easy to tell made me laugh he he brought the energy that i think won him over or had helped him win over people last season when he was here for the first time he brought the the feistiness uh he didn't back down uh he was everything that you hoped you were getting when you re-signed max and they put him in a position all year where he could not succeed and so he's taken a lot of shit but that goal to me it was so funny jesse was sending his videos uh from practice in the morning because you were there yesterday yeah yeah uh and what did you what did you send to steve uh max domi was working on his one-timers at optional skate that's right yeah and steve
Starting point is 00:45:13 your reaction to him doing one-timers like if he ever did it in game what would you do uh i'd ask him to never play for the leafs right but last night what happens he gets a he gets a A fast break and wires it past Bobrovsky. It wasn't a one-timer. No, but he was working on his shot, wasn't he? He ripped the thing. That was a monster shot. It was one of the, hey, they got a break.
Starting point is 00:45:36 Oh, it's Domi. What? I actually rewound and saw your stream several times. I was surprised. Because it was like, all of a sudden, it's like, oh, there's Max Domi. He scores! It was awesome. I thought maybe he'd shoot for a rebound.
Starting point is 00:45:55 No, he's placed it perfect too. And that's Bob. That's Bobrovsky. That was great. It was a great goal. That was great. It's a shame. The Leafs really got some good performances
Starting point is 00:46:08 out of some guys who needed to. Domi was great. McMahon, right after I criticized him on the show. What is it? Like, nine games of either zero or one shot on goal. Was it? I didn't realize that. And he had three shots on goal and two scoring chances that didn't even register shots on goal.
Starting point is 00:46:30 He was really good. Tavares, I thought, had a dogged game. He looked great. Tavares is someone, we're talking about all the rest stuff. Like, Tavares is somebody, it seems, that never gets tired. just but the way i guess in his in his older age he knows what he's expected to do and it's so low adam for anybody listening is doing a level hand just very level no matter how many games are on the schedule his game translates to always being the same and i thought he was great i will say
Starting point is 00:47:01 jesse that he did get the four nations off he did too yeah yeah yeah and so you need to and i would as a leafs manager expect and go to him and say listen we got a really shitty 10 12 14 days here i expect you to be one of the best players after this i need you to be a stand-up because those guys are going to come back a little tired it's going to happen after the olympics too and you know what that's pro sports yeah right like soccer those guys listen everybody laughs at like soccer players diving and shit i think it's because they need a breath those guys those guys fucking run for 70 to 90 minutes oh when's the last time you you you ran for five like it's and run ran full tilt you know caring about those guys run and they run and they run and there are certain games where
Starting point is 00:47:46 it's like yeah messi's only gonna play 20 games tonight because he played an international 20 minutes 20 minutes sorry uh he's played 20 minutes tonight because he played an international and we hope we get what we can out of him what do they do they load manage they go oh well he played an international and the club team can't really do much about that uh and well i guess we'll just have to let them breathe a little bit and i think the i think hockey needs to stop until the playoffs needs to stop with this like oh it's game 65 if i don't fucking play somebody's gonna die if it's game 64 65 and and you're not in a playoff race right you're not in what what are we doing adam you can you've talked to hockey guys this it's wasted breath it's not how they're wired but it's
Starting point is 00:48:35 not how they're wired to adam's point there are ways you can manage that and the leafs aren't doing it right now and jonah siegel has been banging this drum for a little bit now with austin matthews clearly dealing with something craig berube should handle that by not having him play the penalty kill yes there is a simple four minutes a night six minutes a night depending on how there's several max domi penalties he doesn't have to be on the three minutes really because he's playing like half the pk or whatever yeah you don't need to use austin matthews in those instances and adam i think you're bang on in that in these other sports like it's so clear where you can rest guys in a basketball game when you're up by 40 points you don't play anymore
Starting point is 00:49:13 in a hockey game when you're up by six goals the guys are still going out there and they're still going full tilt and you don't get that little like i'm gonna sit down for half a game because that's not the sport and we can never get past that you can't change the game fundamentally but Craig Berube and the coaching staff need to realize you don't need Austin Matthews on the penalty kill right now because you need to manage his minutes and taking away those two three minutes a night actually is a big deal yes is there a way to look up uh ice time from the penalty kill just last night yeah did like I'm not sure David Kampf took the ice well and let me I don't and why are you dressing david camp if he's not killing penalties well that's i'm a little surprised they
Starting point is 00:49:56 didn't find a new home from at the trade deadline if you got scott lawton for a very obvious purpose and it's that and he's going to be on the team next year you obviously like matthews there like i'm looking at it like oh okay well maybe they kept him so that matthews doesn't have to kill penalties anymore and now here he is killing regular season penalties this is exactly what i'm talking about last night austin matthews had two minutes of shorthanded time on ice that's a lot unnecessary yeah you don't need to take away he played 20th had zero seconds austin matthews right 21 minutes 42 seconds in total time on ice drop that down to 1942 it's a lot better that those two minutes help his game a lot because he's dealing with stuff give that to david confu
Starting point is 00:50:41 steve wanted to look this up and we prove that he played zero minutes shorthand so he played zero seconds short-handed that's not enough he played 841 even strength that's too much it's too much for camp in your fourth line no nope can i can i also much throw something at at you guys so i'm looking at one of the things i look at uh very closely come this time of year is goal differential right i think it's a really key indicator i know it sounds stupid goals scored versus goals against oh really smart guy but the you know the Leafs are a plus 15 to compare and contrast that the Panthers are a plus 41 and the Lightning are plus 51 okay and the I'll give you the Capitals Canes and Devils to Capitals are a plus 65 Canes are a plus 32 Devils are a plus 31
Starting point is 00:51:34 and here's the difference the one difference is austin matthews if he was scoring at less than his pace last year let's say austin had 20 more goals than he than he does currently let's just say i called this before the school year you sure did you absolutely did now there was some injuries and stuff so he hasn't played a full amount but let's say austin's got 40 goals that's part of it well all of a sudden the leafs are at a plus 28 and that looks like very close to a plus 32 which is where whereabouts the carolina hurricanes are my point in this oh boy is that if he is not scoring specifically him you are not winning nope and so you know regular season playoffs whatever okay fine the goal differential this year isn't going to be that great it's not going to be a
Starting point is 00:52:20 sparkling number but you have better goaltending you have better defense you do have better balance throughout the lineup you can't tell me that you don't that defense if i had showed you what the Leafs defense would look like last year to this year or 2023 to this year you'd be like holy shit what an upgrade on paper it's crazy it's crazy uh so so hold on let me let me finish this point let me finish this point go ahead go ahead so if you add 15 20 goals to that total which Austin probably ideally would have been at there's your goal differential issue taken and it brings me back to the point of this player is exhausted and Steve you make a great point about the shorthanded why is he playing shorthanded it's okay but like in the oh your points jesse jesse
Starting point is 00:53:05 you make a great point fuck you steve no i'm kidding i was sitting there like did i do that no maybe sorry no um this also contributes to um their poor goal differential um february 23rd what's the significance uh it's a date on the calendar a week and a half before your birthday which is the only significant part of it for me thank you yeah uh it's the last time the Leafs beat a team by more than one goal. Wow. Matty just goes, oh my god. So that was
Starting point is 00:53:36 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Now I'm not going to be like, and it was Chicago. Because the night before they did it to Carolina. They won 6-3. But then there was a game against Boston. They won, but it was by one goal. Game against the Rangers. They won, but it was by one goal. Penguins. They won, but it was by one goal.
Starting point is 00:53:52 Sharks. They lost. Vegas. They lost. Colorado. They lost. Utah. They won, but it was the shootout uh lost to florida that's quite a few games man yeah it is it's like you don't even luck into one no no because they were lucking into one goal wins there were a few games in there that they shouldn't have won but the argument earlier this season that you guys made with me was a they're learning to win those games and those but that's what playoff games look like and now they're learning to lose them they're right so what do you do that's that's why that panthers won ah you
Starting point is 00:54:23 know it was tight man i don't care mike johnson said at the end of the game that was a tight game between two good teams yep uh i just disagree with that assessment um it was it was that way it was that way in the first half and then i thought the panthers very clearly pulled away and there's a style that certain teams play that the leafs cannot overcome offensively the canucks played it to a tee they choked the Leafs for two games the Panthers did I think honestly a better version of what the Bruins did last playoffs they wrapped themselves around the Leafs and squeezed like a ball of constrictor they dump it they four check they're there and they don't have to generate a shot on goal they don't have to generate a scoring chance they just need to keep you away
Starting point is 00:55:18 from their net and you finally get out of your own zone and you're exhausted so you dump it and who's for checking who's chasing fucking no one because you're changing so guess where the puck's going back into your own end asshole go and get it we're gonna tire out the next line do it again and we're gonna keep doing it to you until there's no life left in your body that's what the panthers do that's what good teams do to the leafs and they have no answer for it it's it's that is a frightening thing heading into the playoffs and that's why i think this conversation about fundamentally changing the lines is important because the current structure they have what is not working sorry you said what uh this conversation is important the point yeah that
Starting point is 00:56:06 one point that you didn't want to have you still can't get in the ring you tried to shut down before it got started no no he said i couldn't get it no no maybe berube's gotta appeal to their shut up no no wow why why when did you become such an adam wilde hater you're just you're just dumping on me no i'm kidding i mean high school i think i think i think the point the point is is that we gotta you do have to look at options the one thing i have seen berube do this year is look at options the problem it seems is that he goes back to the same options he tries other things and then and then it's gone back to the same so we need there there needs to be and and the leafs always fuck around in ottawa and play like shit like well well no they're in toronto
Starting point is 00:56:52 with sorry against ottawa oh right they always fuck around they haven't scored a goal against ottawa in toronto this season have they that was that was the three nothing game that we did a live show for and we were like cool this fucking blows yeah to pair that with our our uh montreal one nothing montreal shut out yeah that sucked yeah yeah maddie's just hating it um to mike johnson's point about at the end of the game um it being a tight game like nobody wants to hear it no nobody nobody wants to hear what happened on paper because the leafs won the game five on five two to one the place the leafs lost the game was in special teams yep in the playoffs where things come down to like it really lost to the brood it really truly was a playoff game panthers executed
Starting point is 00:57:41 two to three yeah their power play opportunities the least were over three like that's that's what it came down your penalty kills allowed to stink eh like what that's like people don't understand like your penalty kills allowed to suck yeah yeah so i feel like sucked if if you're looking at it from you want positive takeaways like there are they exist in that game but nobody wants to hear that conversation because you lost to the panthers and and you got you look didn't look good from like the mid first through a lot of the middle of the game i thought they came out the third period i thought they were really good yes um second period was bad when they were chasing the game in the third there they they looked strong and they had opportunities but the opportunities
Starting point is 00:58:22 weren't great they weren't high danger i don't think a lot of the time but it comes down to another fundamental flaw on the team is that when the games get tight their power play and special teams disappear um so i have the ips they have the ips so bad if if if you look at a game from a positive standpoint like if you can just turn around the special teams battle and win that like well you're gonna win if you win the special teams battle we know that you have an opportunity to beat teams like this but even though they don't matter special teams don't matter just they have to raise the level of this team to get to the point where they are winning special teams battles i agree it's good team so i don't know it's it's a pot i think there's some positives take away in winning
Starting point is 00:59:00 this game two to one five on five and if you turn around the special teams which they haven't been able to do for eight years you have a chance so it seems like the panther sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the
Starting point is 00:59:37 right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance mounting window cleaning all that stuff here's the deal 3.4 million pieces of furniture have been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your to-do list 15 off your first task at taskrabbit.ca or on the task rabbit app using the promo code dangle taskers across canada book up fast especially for same day tasks get 15 off your first task right now with the promo code dangle at taskrabbit.ca or the task rabbit app you should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle two and five canadians will hear the words you

Starting point is 01:01:14 do what do they need to do ottawa is a big game uh it's always a big game and the senators are in a playoff race yeah they're gonna want this win more than the leafs well at least on paper what what do you do what i can't have on saturday is the leafs get goalied because all mark is having a really good couple weeks right now he's after being injured for a little bit not being available and you're like okay what did ottawa get in this trade you know did they get all mark all mark looks like all mark again yeah and the leafs need to go into that game and say no matter how well this goaltender is playing we're gonna do the messy things that some youtuber has been screaming about this team to do for years and years and years we're gonna go to the net
Starting point is 01:01:59 we're gonna make it difficult on this goaltender to make these saves and it can't be an option to lose this game one nothing they if they lose it which can happen you can lose any hockey game it needs to be a game where you put up four goals you know you lost this five four wall was a mess or something he let a lot of squeakers through rebounds deflection get those goals get those ugly goals and you have to put them up against that's for me yeah to me like yes similar opinion because they're losing those battles very consistently these days where they are not getting the dirty goals in front of the net. They are giving up an abundance of the dirty goals in front of their own net.
Starting point is 01:02:44 They're doing what teams who lose do, which is losing the net front battles. With Ottawa, I mean, if you're tired, you're dead. So I need you to look like a team that has energy, even if you've got to fake it, even if you've got to get to the bottom of the tank somehow. Because Brady Kachuk is going to beat the shit out of you and enjoy it. He's going to be a pig in shit.
Starting point is 01:03:12 He's going to beat the shit out of you. Like, the Sens are not a desirable opponent for the playoff. I was looking at their lineup yesterday. I went Fabian Zetterlund's on their fourth line. oh shit and like he's one of the only players in the league he's got some ovechkin like stat line where he's the only player to have this many points and this many hits and this many i i can't remember what it was like he was city tv everywhere for the sharks and now you got him on the fourth line they're probably just easing him in don't you think yeah but like he's he'll
Starting point is 01:03:51 be rested yeah uh put it that way um if you're the team with the second most energy against the ottawa senators a team that excels at a fast exciting game you're dead so then you know i'm uh i first off by the way did you guys see the the the leanest old mark save last thing holy santa claus shit i just sent it to jess who wouldn't try to get a screen grab of it if you don't mind yeah just just just to show people if you haven't seen it's unbelievable um florida Florida play is a pretty good team game. One thing I want to say about Florida, Mike Johnson pointed this out and it's bothered me forever.
Starting point is 01:04:27 And I've never been able to put a finger on it. And now I got it. He's like, they know how to do intentional interference without getting called for it. They're so good at picks. Gus Forsling is crazy at it. That's something though, that you could teach anybody.
Starting point is 01:04:45 You could teach anybody that it's what the good teams do. It's what the best teams do. They interrupt any flow that you have. Florida's good at it. Vegas is good at it. Boston has been good at it forever. And what do I always say about Tampa? They beat you through litigation.
Starting point is 01:05:06 They are their coach's team. They are the yappiest, loudest bench in the entire league. In all of hockey, there is not a louder, yappier bench than the Tampa Bay Lightning's. and they have a literal lawyer as their head coach. They beat you through litigation, and it's something that the Leafs have never, ever done better than anyone else. They've never done it better than the opponent across from them is cheat legally.
Starting point is 01:05:39 They've, you know, it sounds like cope with the Panthers, but like every year someone does it. It's not a complaint. um the winners in this league and then they went out and got marshan who might be like the league's best uh accidentally on purpose player oh yeah he's gonna be playing on a line with a guy who punched him while skating at full speed and got away with it and matthew kachuk what a nightmare so they're one of the most skilled teams in the league they have an unreal decor they're well coached they're intense and they get away with everything oh and they have a good goalie how
Starting point is 01:06:17 the fuck are you supposed to beat that team it's a good right so if the Leafs could take a little bit away from them that'd be great the abundance of evidence in front of us is they will not they haven't learned from the Bruins never not once so it'd be great if they learned how to get away with it like Forsling does they won't Jesse can you show us the uh the save here look at that effing save holy shit oh my god by the way ottawa the shots in this are 25 to 14 like ottawa is but ottawa is better than the bruins guys i have been able to say that since 2017 well and probably before you know someone right before this was like three goals on 14 shots all marks fighting it tonight yeah oh shit that is who's that jacob lauco i think
Starting point is 01:07:14 getting robbed or mason lori holy shit that is a crazy visual if i was a sense fan that poster would be in my room already on the ceiling forget above the bed that is on the ceiling hot damn look at that thing unreal save yeah that's crazy it's crazy gaines's former team so uh moving on uh just to rub a little salt in the wound here um i think you'll love this uh uh connor timmons and connor doer scored for the pens last night outrageous and so did ryan graves outrage ryan graves connor timmons and connor doers didn't doer have two uh yes i believe so in his first game with the penguins he beat his leafs goal total yes yeah 48 regular season games he had one goal plus i think six games in the playoffs no goals
Starting point is 01:08:05 that's crazy how don't you laugh oh you have to how don't you laugh uh you have to ryan graves with one goal one assist this year doer didn't have two oh no oh did tim have two i don't think either i thought one of them had two oh i thought they did too okay well i guess not i don't doesn't matter they scored uh big goals and by the way i think this is interesting uh sydney crosby is creeping up there neither of them have to just oh all right well one is a lot i don't know where One felt like two because it was a stab to the neck. Crosby, Sidney Crosby, most points with one franchise. He is three points behind to tie, four points to pass Wayne Gretzky
Starting point is 01:08:51 for fourth most points with a single franchise. Ahead of Gretzky is Mario Lemieux, Steve Eisenman, and Gordie Howe. And Sidney Crosby has 1,666 points. Gretzky had 1,669. Lemieux at 1,723. Iserman at 1,755. Howe at 1,809. If Crosby stays with the Pens,
Starting point is 01:09:15 like if he goes to the Avs like we all think he will. No. You do. I don't. He's going to pass Gordie Howe and have the most points with any franchise within a couple years. Years and years ago,
Starting point is 01:09:26 I wrote an article for Sportsnet about, hey, well, I wrote it differently because we were talking about goalie wins. The goalie with the most wins who has only ever played for one team. So even though Brodeur won more games with the Devils than anyone has ever won with another team, he went to the Blues.
Starting point is 01:09:48 So as soon as you go to another team, you rip up that record and throw it away. Yep. I think the record might be Henrik Lundqvist who signed with the Caps but never played. oh okay all right so for me the guy Crosby needs to pass well Lemieux never played with another team and Eisenman never played with another team uh the years ago I pointed out I'm like you know Crosby has a chance of like passing Eisenman and people are like dude he's got a he's got a lot
Starting point is 01:10:19 of hockey to play a lot can happen injuries blah blah and now we're here now we're here i'm old enough that i can talk shit on my old takes and he is an all-time great he might be a top five forward ever when it's all said and done ever this resume stands up to nearly anybody's gretzky's isn't really fair yeah yeah no kidding no kidding but like the mount Rushmore is who like Gretzky just forwards Lemieux how is interesting because that's like a generational thing is he is he better than Eisenman like by that by the time it's all said and done yeah maybe like is he better than Eisenman I think probably Stevie Eisenman would tell you he is comparable stats to steve eisenman with probably more individual accolades and a
Starting point is 01:11:22 supporting staff eisenman played on some of the greatest teams ever yes and that's not to take away from stevie but stevie also played in an era where 150 points for a top line player wasn't out of the question and i believe he hit that mark a couple times eisenman won a cup with yeah 155 one time in 88 89 and then he had a 102 155 127 108 103 and a 137 in consecutive seasons yeah way in what era 80s into the early 90s there you go and then the trap game
Starting point is 01:11:51 happened and exactly yeah Eisenman might have had a like one top five finish in all those yeah yeah right isn't that wild like he's
Starting point is 01:11:58 Crosby's the top five forward ever I think Ovechkin is that's a fascinating conversation in itself man and they're always
Starting point is 01:12:10 going to be attached to the hip I know I brought up Ovechkin out of nowhere but they're they're always going to be attached to each other it's pretty neat
Starting point is 01:12:16 It's pretty neat. Now, one of the things that we saw break this morning is Aiden Hill signed an extension with the Vegas Golden Knights. And it's a six-year deal worth $6.25 million. Aiden Hill, by the way, member of Team Canada, although he sat on the bench the entire time. Yeah, been or better.
Starting point is 01:12:34 Stanley Cup winner, but still been or better. He's got a 9.06 and a 2.53 goals against average this year. 24 wins in 39 games. But again, Stanley Cup winning goaltender. what do you guys think of the term what do you guys think of the money and it's important that you know that he is 28 yeah um uh what is it six years six years 6.25 34 he's a goalie ages differently ages better usually yeah usually uh and the cap going up like that's my default for everything is ah 6.25 six years from now that'll be like free that'll be like league men um
Starting point is 01:13:16 But if you go and look at Aiden Hill's career, he had, I think, a four-game stint with the Coyotes in his very first NHL season. But any season after that little four-game stint, he's had a 900 save percentage or higher, which in this era has been very hard. Yep. Aiden Hill has not had many downturns in his career. And if you're Vegas, I mean, the goal of any good GM is to bring players and retain players to your hockey team
Starting point is 01:13:49 that you know can help you win a Stanley Cup. Well, you know Aiden Hill can win you a Stanley Cup. He did it. He did it. Why not lock him up? No problem with that at all. Beginning next year at that new contract hit, Aiden Hill will be the 12th highest paid goaltender in the league.
Starting point is 01:14:06 There's not a lot to fuss about about the 12th highest paid goaltender in the league based on cap hit. That includes carry price. If you take it out, that's like 11. and then he'll be 20th in a couple years and that yeah like i feel like that's six six years the caps just gonna go up and that number is gonna go up for goaltenders around the league that's about what you should pay for for a guy who's your starting goaltender but like he's your one a but you got your one b you know hanging out there because he's not gonna play
Starting point is 01:14:33 70 games like it's the mid 2000s and he's martin broder but he's gonna start every playoff game for you because that's your guy and that's about right like there's this is a good contract oh yeah And Vegas' attention to detail is so good. They were scouting everything, not just their own games, but he didn't allow a single goal at the Four Nation face-off. Shut up. I know. Stop.
Starting point is 01:14:57 Canada's favorite contest is back. It's roll up to win. Roll up to win. Steve, can you roll your R's? Oh, that was good. That's better than me. Much better. Imagine turning your Tim's routine.

Starting point is 01:16:00 errors of youth it's it's banging oh absolutely okay jesse what's yours boston cream donut from And Tim Hortons is like one of my favorite donut world. Wow. It's so good. And I'll never move off of that. I don't know where this old man from Ajax is talking about. Okay, you have one thing you like and you'll never move off of it. I will try an abundance of things.

Starting point is 01:17:08 You've got to try breakfast at A&W. You've got to try breakfast at A&W. And what better way than with a delicious Pret Organic Coffee? Starting at just $1 all day, every day, now until December 31st. You've got to try breakfast at A&W. at participating A&W locations in Ontario. Also interesting, draft rules are about to change. So on insider trading, Darren Drager said yesterday,
Starting point is 01:17:45 if you draft a player out of the CHL, NHL clubs have a window of two years to sign that player to an NHL deal because otherwise they go back into the draft. If you draft a player from the NCAA, you have a four-year signing window. So basically you're retaining their rights without even paying them, right?
Starting point is 01:18:01 So he said, now we know that the NCAA rules have changed. So CHL players, and you're seeing it all the time. Like I see it from the, like the Frontenac's accounts, like so-and-so has committed to this university or whatever. How does that impact these signing timelines? And general managers need some clarity on that. I think it's interesting that you could draft a player from the CHL and it's only two.
Starting point is 01:18:24 The NCAA is four. And I feel like the reason for the four is that the NCAA was not, traditionally a place up until about 10 years ago where they were getting consistent nhl players like tyler bozak christian hansen that was like that generation of guys that the leaf signed out of college didn't draft signed became that was sort of the start of it for us here matthew nyes obviously is is a is a college guy college is where you go to find late bloomers right you're used to be so and which is why teams tended not to use draft picks on them yeah i wonder what the happy medium here is it feels like it might just be two years but if you draft a player and he's a
Starting point is 01:19:04 freshman and he's like i want to stay and get my degree well you just pissed a draft pick away didn't you well not necessarily it's just a decision you that's it's something you got to live with it's i mean it's it how different is it really than like uh forgive me but drafting a russian every year we talk about the russian factor right and this guy's gonna come over we don't know he may never come over right and they always do they very often like do you think the montreal canadians are kind of kicking themselves about mitch koff because as good as things have been in montreal this year nice to see them take a step forward they sure could use mitch koff no they're not because they went out and got i'm ivan demidov who what if you could
Starting point is 01:19:47 have both yeah i know you could have both that would be crazy um but like evgeny kuznetsov was a guy who took a long time to come over he was worth the wait i know his you know career no no he was great he was spectacular and won you a cup right uh carol kaprizov worth the way worth the weight holy shit and that he was like a fifth round pick so like i don't even know if he counts in the equation um you know this is just a different version of that i am pro uh anything that gives players more uh agency uh over their career and lives so i i hope that's what happens but if you're if you're free signing martyr sign for less yes i don't know why people have a hard time understanding i don't think they do i'm just giving i'm just teasing you i don't think anybody
Starting point is 01:20:41 has a hard time understanding i'm excited to hear alan walsh talk about this yeah me too like he has great insight on these issues of draft and player movement and player empowerment issues so i'm excited for the next episode of agent provocateur alan i think would be a fan of oh you got drafted and they didn't sign you you're a free agent instantly you unrestricted free agents alan would abolish the draft i think he would he said that before on the podcast that he would love to abolish the draft it's true hey if you are a person who can play in the nhl you should be able to just enter the league and teams can sign you and that's it and i you look at how soccer works and around the world and you there aren't a lot of defense against it except the competitive
Starting point is 01:21:25 balance one about you want the teams that suck to get the good players but then why should the teams that suck get the good players but it's an interesting thought exercise on abolishing a draft which will never happen i don't believe in north america and pro sports um in the four major ones at least but it's an interesting thought exercise i think so it's kind of neat where do you land on it do you can you foresee something like that well like what's funny is like it used to be a wildly unfair advantage for like montreal who okay like they get all the quebecois players there they have the best players in the world they win all the cups would like would the canadian teams get better or worse if you abolish
Starting point is 01:22:08 the game? Because no one wants to sign that. But the majority of players are Canadian, or at least the biggest swath, the biggest country is Canadian, but everyone's got Canada on their no trade. So you're just going to ice a roster of Stephen Lorenz's.
Starting point is 01:22:24 I don't know. Would that make the Leafs better? If they had 12 Stephen Lorenz's at forward? Depends which uncle you ask. I like Stephen Lorenz a lot. In the abolish the draft scenario, I would still keep the salary cap because I think you're creating some sort of competitive balance when you abolish the draft, but you keep the salary cap.
Starting point is 01:22:44 Maybe you go to luxury tax, but then it's a little unfair. So I think just for the sake of keeping everything normal, I think you'd get a lot of the top guys going to more competitive teams. So it doesn't really work. You know what I think would work? I'll beat you up for that, Tate. You know what I think would work? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:23:00 I understand why Allen's – because Allen's pro-labor, So he's going to be against the draft, right? I get that from a fundamental point of view. If he kept the draft, but you had rookie pool money or something that was separate from the cap in order to sign players. So you get a first overall pick. Well, they're probably going to be worth three or four million bucks if they're playing at least, right? So that's how it works in Major League Baseball when you want to sign a player out of Japan. And there, I believe it's 26 and under.
Starting point is 01:23:32 Don't quote me on that. But you only have a certain amount of pool money that you can use to sign the player. So you have like $8 million or whatever. You can trade this pool money with other teams and that sort of stuff to get more money. Like we just saw this offseason with Rookie Sasaki when the Jays didn't sign him. The Dodgers did. But that's very interesting. So if every team has $10 million or that's way too much.
Starting point is 01:23:53 It has like $4 million to sign rookies starting on June 28th or whenever the draft would be. And then that's it. yeah you can't have this balance where the this the least who have unlimited but it's outside the cap it's outside the and i would say it's more than four million sure but because just four million ten jesus yeah that's that's a very interesting idea so you'd operate more like baseball in the international funding windows and you get it you get it for that they are in your rookie pool bonus for as long as their elc is not an age thing it's a contracting it might be one year though because some people get signed to a one-year elc yeah you know that's the so a
Starting point is 01:24:29 negotiating ploy if you're austin matthews for instance if you went fell into that rookie thing is you don't want to sign a three-year deal you're signing for one right right and you're going i'm yeah sorry i'm gonna make i'm gonna make i'm gonna one and then you're you know what i'm saying then do you get a situation where san jose can't ever get maclin celebrini because celebrini is like i can i'm 18 i can sign in the nhl it's a draft window signing time i'm gonna sign with the florida panthers well i think you draft you're still drafting he's still your draft pick and you still retain his rights no there's no draft oh there's no draft we abolish the draft he's 18 he gets to sign with whoever he wants man there'd be yo you guys are worried about teams being good
Starting point is 01:25:10 i'd be worried about tax-free states that'd be the only thing i'm worried about like celebrating to be a panther right yeah like montreal's no offense but like quebec taxes are are i mean they're in line sort of nationally but they are higher you wouldn't get it california would never get a player yet no that's true california's got their higher taxes quote unquote yeah yeah so yeah this might load up oh shit yeah it'd be you know it'd be people yeah people be like that'd be crazy imagine the stars loading up maybe abolishing the draft is a bad idea yeah yeah i i mean i think the draft is ultimately probably a fair way to distribute things it's probably the most but i do think alan's gonna i do think rookie should make more than uh 925
Starting point is 01:25:53 grand plus some schedule a and schedule b bonuses it's fucking stupid like three yeah like that's insane like what are we talking well and like no one gets the bonuses well and and so so if the guys at the very top if you're austin matthews now like you're that good or you're connor mcdavid you're that good you're macklin you're that good why are you signing a three-year elc you don't have to yeah yeah you do uh there's uh the it's a age thing oh is it so another problem here is they keep changing the rules so and i can never stay up to date i might be out of date but um i don't care enough i remember the canucks had a problem with uh i think it was nikita tramkin um they tried to sign him to a three-year elc yep and the league had to be like that's literally
Starting point is 01:26:30 against our rules you can't do that right i do remember that yeah yeah they had to be two or one or whatever i don't remember it's the rule is for players aged 18 to 21 entry-level contracts must be for three years for for players uh 22 to 23 entry-level contracts must be for two years and then any player 24 plus uh there's some other rules there's some other but that's the elc rules on if you're 18 to 21 they have to be three years toronto toronto maple leaf signing borya valis three-year elc because he's under under 21 there you go borya valis borya valis i love it alan alan adam can you do me a favor the next time you're talking to alan i am wearing a black shirt like alan does on agent provocateur can you bring up this topic again yeah of course it'd be fun to
Starting point is 01:27:21 hear his thoughts on abolishing the draft i absolutely want to okay thank you now onto a bit a bit of a more serious uh topic and this is one that that uh you know that whenever we approach topics like this we try to be as sensitive as possible and it has to do with a published report yesterday by scott powers of the athletic uh oilers gm stan bowman files to quash subpoena in John Doe versus Blackhawks lawsuit. Steve, you really wanted to comment on this because there's a lot happening here and the context of this topic,
Starting point is 01:27:54 as unpleasant as it is in the sport, is going to hit center stage, not because of the Blackhawks situation, but because of the Team Canada situation. And that kicks off, I believe, April 25th? Very soon. And so basically throughout the playoffs, we're going to be talking about playoffs and this trial.
Starting point is 01:28:11 yeah well and then and then the stan bowman thing is another thing adam i want to thank you because like here's here's how this happens sometimes there's a topic comes up and i go adam i want to talk about this and other times i go adam i want to take this person to the fucking woodshed and uh adam goes uh well let's talk about this like grown-ups because i need to be reminded sometimes and uh you know we know lawyers yes cabal of lawyers i married into a firm yes and so the question that was asked is why would someone do this why would what did he do so stan bowman here's my number one pet peeve with the chicago blackhawks story okay everyone thinks that the Jenner and Block report that came out a few
Starting point is 01:29:03 years ago and the settlement with Kyle Beach was the end of it. That was just a review. It, that wasn't the end of it. It's not the Kyle Beach wasn't the only person
Starting point is 01:29:19 involved. There are many people involved. There was a high school student that was sexually assaulted by Brad Aldrich. He went to prison for it. As far as I know that's the only criminal conviction in this story. But there are multiple victims.
Starting point is 01:29:40 There's Kyle Beach. There's the high school student who is now a grown man. And there's this new Blackhawks player, Black Ace, who we don't know their identity. um stan bowman has the opportunity to uh help in the is is it investigation i think investigation is the wrong word well it's so what this is is this is a this is a civil lawsuit right so this is not criminal yes but the lawsuit is for basically not reporting this properly and remember the way it all happened was uh this report was brought to chicago management john
Starting point is 01:30:22 mcdonough stan bowman uh kevin shovel day off mark bergevin john joel quinville although chevy says he wasn't there um bergevin says he didn't there was some weird stuff but the reality was that john mcdonough who's no longer with the black blackhawks was known as a really not great guy to work for people were terrified of him and what he said in the middle of the playoffs when this happened he said let me handle it you guys focus on the hockey thing and then he proceeded to do nothing right and that's what happened so so when Stan Bowman resigned from the Blackhawks it was one of the most bizarre things ever because what I remember from the release of the Jenner and Block report is the Chicago Blackhawks uh going out of their way to praise
Starting point is 01:31:10 this man who did such a bad job he quit he did he did such a bad job handling everything in the brad aldrich saga whatever story whatever you want to call it um that he paid for it with his job he resigned and they praised him for saying how helpful he was uh throughout the uh jenner and block investigation who who praised him the blackhawks did um uh the wurtz family okay um so now here we are the story isn't over and this is the bizarre thing about the story the story is not over it's still in civil proceedings but after resigning he's gotten his job back well not with the blackhawks but he's the nhl reinstated him the oilers hired him he's back in the league and everyone talked about he's done the work he's done the work he's done the work
Starting point is 01:32:15 stan bowman and the people around him used a lot of people in the media and some people were far too eager to be used by him in this weird little pr propaganda campaign about what a great sunshine and rainbows wonderful person stan bowman is why he finally understands right um why you'd have to ask them no no why why do you say that like because what he's doing here for anybody that doesn't know is he's filing right he's basically saying i don't live in chicago anymore you didn't subpoena me in edmonton yes so that doesn't count as a proper summons so therefore i don't have to show up which at best at best is going to lead to somewhat of a delay because of a paperwork thing and you know with courts everything takes forever now they're
Starting point is 01:33:13 just gonna like refile it they're gonna refile and then and then serve him in edmonton right so so that's that's the part that's but that is the it is semantics but and and that's how the law comes why do that yeah why did that that's the whole thing right and the question and the answer to why you would do that from the legal side is well your lawyer is going to say well they improperly filed paperwork here's a way to delay proceedings you're heading into the what playoffs i and i don't care and i hate that excuse you're an nhl general manager um you're busy all but six or seven percent of the year i think it's not about being busy though it's about not being a distraction which was how this whole thing started it all started with the black hawks
Starting point is 01:33:59 no bad stuff happens bad things happen when bad things happen there was a procedure the black hawks didn't follow it the right people were told the right people did nothing about it making them the wrong people because they didn't want to be a distraction during the chicago black hawks 2010 playoff run and now here we are in 2025 15 years later knowing everything that we know and it's the same thing in theory we don't know this but we can it sure seems that way the reason this has me so hot is Stan Bowman was helpful in the investigation in 2021 and worked with sheldon kennedy where's oh he's done so much work you know what he's done so much work and he's such a great guy why is he trying to get out of being helpful now why isn't he moving
Starting point is 01:34:58 heaven and earth to make sure his testimony and his story and his interpretation of events and his recollection of events why isn't he moving heaven and earth if he's such a great reformed i get it now eureka hallelujah guy why if he's that person is he trying to get out of a subpoena that could help someone who says they're a victim it's because he probably doesn't want to be deposed and they're in negotiations to settle right now now i am not disagreeing with you i'm just telling you probably from the legal side of it is this person is seeking financial compensation the black hawks and whoever else was named in this report are probably negotiating with them because if this goes to court then everything's public if you sit for a deposition as we saw
Starting point is 01:35:53 during the concussion uh lawsuits sometimes they're either put out there publicly because those are the state rules and every state has different rules or um they get leet and that's before they even retrial if they reach trial all that shit becomes you know they use that in the trial that those things so so but adam getting this right is important to him so if he's deposed it could raise other issues that maybe we didn't know about that were kept quiet oh no what is he gonna pay for it with his job in edmonton because maybe he should have never been hired in the first place the nhl was too happy to get rid of this thing and be done with it before it was even done well they would tell you it is done civil lawsuits they can't control when those are
Starting point is 01:36:45 fired and and i would say now speak to me like a human being i in all honesty though you can't you can't actually no i know you can't control that what you can control steve and i think this is where the crux of your point lies is going i know they didn't file the paperwork properly but the last thing i need is more bad press on this issue yeah so i'm just gonna go and and say i was sir yeah that's the beginning and end of it for stan bowman is right now is like if you were truly thinking about like what's best for everybody in this situation don't have your lawyer be the pettiest lawyer on earth and say oh you didn't file this subpoena right well like just go help if you're truly there to help we've had this conversation in different forms but like that
Starting point is 01:37:30 lawyer works for you exactly um and you know i don't have a ton of experience with lawyers but uh they don't do a ton without asking so my guess is hey so here's what i can do for you and you tell them yes or no that's my guess as to what happened here hey stan i can do this for you and do you want me to do it yes or no he said yes and i believe i'm gonna guess here i think he said yes to something like that because he still does not recognize what doing these things mean and i don't know if everything he's gone through has taught him a whole bunch based on his actions in this one specific scenario now people will chalk this up to legal maneuvering and what it does do is they'll say well it gives them a couple extra weeks to negotiate because this is going to
Starting point is 01:38:25 take a couple weeks to rectify so he might just get out of it altogether no well i think likely that was probably where it was headed anyway very likely they settle this and as they settle yeah and you hear nothing yeah just like uh with the high school student in michigan right this is where if you're stan you if you're trying to because he doesn't want to relitigate this he doesn't want to go back through this and you know what i can't say i blame him for not wanting to do it but that's not a choice you get to make anymore you're in this you owe this person uh you owe this person your absolute best to do right by this there's still work to do he's done work yeah man the job's not done what do you mean you've done the work job's not done right what
Starting point is 01:39:10 are you talking about yep i agree with that yeah it feels like stan bowman thought like oh everything is all done like i can move on i'm a gm again i got back into the league i did all the work and well like it's never over and i don't think he recognizes that based on this action so with all that said steve yes this this rankles you because this is a very easily rectified situation right just tell your story man just tell you did it once right you did it once what's the well and what what concerns me is like he didn't come out and say or his legal counsel didn't come out and say he's already said everything there is to say and that's represented in the Jenner and Block report so for me the reason he's being uh subpoenaed and they want
Starting point is 01:40:04 to hear from him is he has more to say I think there was more in the Jenner and Block report than the public saw remember it was an yeah of course of course yeah I'm I'm willing to believe that um and i i remember being so impressed with the general block report it was like wow this is really thorough um and i think they want to be prematurely done with this yeah and they're not it continues can i can i mention something i can't let go sure i want to call this person out i don't care i'm gonna call this person out because they said this publicly and they deserve it as far as i'm concerned um kevin low was a long-time uh player for the edmonton oilers long long-time executive for the edmonton oilers yep uh
Starting point is 01:41:01 he posted this on his public linkedin rick westhead has a book coming up um in october i think i'm not sure something like that yeah so jim kite who member of the order of canada former player uh he said something on his linkedin no i haven't seen that but i don't get the impression he's a huge rick westhead fan here's what kevin lowe said on his public linkedin go ahead and find it jim kite well said thanks for highlighting rick westhead's unfair portrayal of hockey and his mischaracterization of hockey culture like many who take issue with the sport i can't help but wonder if he was cut from a team or didn't get enough ice time when he played given his track record of sensationalism in recent years he posted this like two weeks ago
Starting point is 01:41:53 uh i see no chance that his book will offer a balanced perspective as you astutely pointed out good news doesn't drive clicks or viewership that that's what the beach saga was all about that's what this was all about kevin yeah good job you're a smart guy holy fuck you're in the league for how long jesus christ for those fueling westhead's one-sided narrative about our national game consider one example of what he consistently leaves out of his reporting while he fixates on the changes hockey needs he has never acknowledged the significant respect education programs the Western Hockey League has implemented to support thousands of players and their families. Many of these initiatives have been endorsed by Sheldon Kennedy and his Respect in Sport organization
Starting point is 01:42:43 for over a decade. There's a much bigger story here one Westhead chooses to ignore. If you want half a story, enjoy the read. To quote the ever-popular Don Cherry, for all you bleeding hearts, I hope I'm wrong. do you know how many people in hockey agree with that mumbling headass nonsense again who wrote this kevin low kevin low oh kevin low okay and adam you uh you steved that when you're like october i think when is it not october when steve was talking about the book and interrupted just to talk about it sorry i just i was just trying to my bad my bad there's a moment because you What do you mean, Steve did?
Starting point is 01:43:26 Hey, are we both mad at him? You criticized Adam by criticizing me. What? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. This sport has a Everest hill to climb still. And everyone looks at 2021 as the reckoning in the beginning and end. I got news for you.
Starting point is 01:43:49 you think what drove rick westhead's reporting of the blackhawk scandal and the team canada scandal is he didn't get enough ice time growing up you ought to be fucking ashamed of yourself go to hell piece of shit i don't know how to handle that um delicately i think or the the insinuation that it's about clicks i'm gonna tell you something i'm gonna tell you something tsn doesn't uh employ rick because it's profitable i don't think i don't think they're looking at rick westhead and going he makes the kind of money that the leafs do the regional leafs games do for us i don't think they're looking at rick and go man we can sell a ton of sponsorships right they have him because
Starting point is 01:44:48 he's a journalist who doesn't really like rick would be the first one to tell you i don't really cover sports i cover sports but from that this perspective i know why men like kevin lowe don't like rick westhead as he speaks truth to power and kevin lowe is the power yeah and for you're the boot what kevin doesn't seem to boot what kevin doesn't seem to understand in this situation is that all of the things that, you know, he lists the WHL thing, all of the education programs. Yeah, that's all awesome. That's great.
Starting point is 01:45:18 That is what it should be. And we should also expose these stories. And, Kevin, those programs get a ton of play. They come with the sport. It's part of what you sell parents on to get them to play in the league. So don't tell me that those things are overlooked. Clearly, there is an issue. There's been an issue.
Starting point is 01:45:43 Hopefully, the issue doesn't continue. But there's been an issue. I don't understand why you wouldn't say, hey, listen, the WHL does all these great things. And they do. But also, for Rick to say. What does that have to do with anything? Yeah, why is the WHL even, why are you even bringing them up? Oh, you keep pointing at all these bad things.
Starting point is 01:46:04 What about good thing? Checkmate. It's not. What are you, a third grader? these issues are not plus minus do you know you know what i'm saying it's not goal for goal against here and and and so yeah i think all this is to say bringing it back to stan bowman this is going to be as this continues somewhat of a distraction to what end we don't really know but i think that really bothered you that and i don't blame you at all i'm giving you by the way
Starting point is 01:46:35 I just want to say when I give the legal side of it, it's only because, hey, here's a base understanding of what this is. It's not like I'm like, yeah, you know what? Let's stand Bowman off the thing. I'm not trying to develop sources with Stan Bowman. I'm not trying to defend Stan Bowman. I do want people to understand that I'm trying to give some context, the emotion of it completely understandable. Yeah, I listen. We followed this story so closely. I'm really proud of how we've followed this story over the years and uh i don't blame people for forgetting details in this story but people think it's over it ain't over it ain't over it wasn't one person and that's an uncomfortable that's an uncomfortable fact isn't it guys like it's uncomfortable that the shit still
Starting point is 01:47:23 isn't over we were talking about this when do we when do we have rick on the first time 2021 summer four years ago yeah yeah it's crazy that people like kevin lowe exist within the hockey community in the hockey game that are still actively by the hundreds just that are actively fighting against rick wested and the work he's trying to do because he's just the one who said it publicly there's tons of people who definitely feel that same way behind the scenes and i'm glad you read that because i hadn't read that before that's i've already read the jim kite one that's very good to know um about the people who work within this game yep some people some people some people and hey listen that's a person that feels bold enough yeah to post that publicly
Starting point is 01:48:05 on linkedin that's crazy holy crap well that is that is all like you know you know some people like i'm gonna say the the the the quiet part out loud like you gotta have confidence uh and you got to be real out of touch for that to be like you know what click send well you got that's wild in a in a really thick-headed stupid echo chamber which i think a lot of these guys are that's the thing is he's probably surrounded by people who one if they feel differently than him they are going to not say anything or two they feel the same way and support his decision making so there's people around kevin low who believe that so he think he's in touch with what currently is in his environment in his echo chamber as you put it yeah yeah not great uh we'll leave it at that
Starting point is 01:48:52 do we want to do press conference yeah let's do it i don't have the button button did you like that i did thank you yeah the button was added after so you look you sounded kind of ridiculous adam that's so embarrassing for you i don't know how you show your face in public up for that well uh what is it we don't we don't have to no no no so sorry uh the person kevin lowe was quoting jim kite so i haven't seen what he said but member of the order of canada nhl alumnus educator he was the first deaf player to make play in the nhl really wow yeah oh i didn't know he overcame a lot accessibility and inclusion advocate uh proud honorary colonel of the 76th Communication Regiment.

Luxury sales claim based on S&P Global Mobility Canadian New Vehicle total registrations for calendar year 2025 for the Cadillac definition of luxury. We got this from Grady underscore Bug. Grady said, Jesse, I've completed three goals off of my New Year's resolutions list. Should I give up and stop trying this year so I don't accidentally complete a fourth goal and lose my hat trick?
Starting point is 01:51:29 That's a good one. someone came up to us at the london event and they're like you know jesse's hat trick thing and i'm like yeah and he goes he's right and we go what i am right about that look it up no look it up there's another name for when you score four goals like a texas hat trick or something like a three goals is defined as our hat trick is defined as scoring three goals once you get four it's done why is everything gotta be like everything uh grady also you should give up yeah you don't want to lose that three goals you've already accomplished so give up your fourth goal and you will still accomplish your three goals.
Starting point is 01:52:01 If he wants to score an Ontario hat-trick, that's a four-goal hat-trick. We're going with big. Why? Because it's 25% more? Hey, oh, oh. I'm just saying. Hey, oh. All right.
Starting point is 01:52:17 We had this one from Doug2. Does Dustin Wolfe deserve any Hart Trophy votes if the Flames make the playoffs? He's not going to because to get heart votes, you've got to be considered one of the top five players in the NHL this season. It's not crazy. I don't think it's crazy either. I'm with you.
Starting point is 01:52:43 It's not crazy, and it's crazy because some people... We have a truly exceptional rookie class, and I don't think people are getting it. because you got Celebrini and Michkov who are on the periphery of the conversation. Then there's Lane Hudson, who's going to crack 50 points as a rookie defenseman.
Starting point is 01:53:09 Psycho stuff. But then you have Dustin Wolf, who is dragging the flames to the playoffs. Him and Nazem Khadri. He's been a top five goalie in the NHL this season. Yeah. So a question that was posed before that in the Discord server for the press conference questions
Starting point is 01:53:26 was who's your pick for calder and why is it wolf and they provide some numbers on what the flames are doing so far this season that justify dustin wolf making the are getting the calder trophy so they quoted a tweet from at in the dome pod the tweet says 30 second in total goals for insane 30 second in total goals all situation goals for unreal 30 second and five on five goals for per 60 32nd in all situation goals for per 60 26th in five on five high danger score uh chances chances is chance yeah i think so per 60 24th in all situation high danger chances per 60 no one on pace for 60 points no one on pace for 30 goals wow only three forwards on pace for 40 plus points in a playoff spot because of dustin wolf that is numbers and it is the
Starting point is 01:54:20 most important position in this they have zero scoring but they have a top five goaltender i think wolf probably deserves the calder if they make the playoffs probably even if they don't heart trophy votes probably out of the question but calder for sure for me lane hudson is easily putting on a performance that would win him the calder most of the time but dustin wolf is doing something truly truly exceptional we haven't seen a rookie goalie this good in couldn't even tell you the last time a rookie yeah like i don't even know off the top of my head like what last rookie came in and was this good besides just um joseph wall i want to say jim the net detective carry won the calder and the vesna one year which is insane uh he's not he's not winning the vesna
Starting point is 01:55:13 you might get nominated man i don't know i think uh i probably vote dustin wolf over connor hellebuck i don't believe in hellebuck's numbers they look a little like translucent oh stop it i look at hellebuck's numbers and i see right through them gee it's jesse who goes further than playoffs connor hellebuck or the leafs or or justin wolf fair what if they go head to head what if it's oh that's the situation where the world ends before anybody wins all right all right they'll be playing in the world will explode um dustin wolf his numbers on the season 22 12 and 5 a 9 15 a 2 5 3 g a i was watching vancouver calgary the other night one night was that tuesday night and the broadcast had this one stat
Starting point is 01:56:04 about wolf that i thought was fascinating in the 39 i guess it'd be uh the numbers shift by one game because it was said during the game but so he's played 39 games so far this season he's played in 25 one goal games dustin wolf shit ton yeah for 25 or 39 is crazy that's nuts in those one goal games he has 17 wins wow wow so he's ice he's just ice what fucking cold as shit you want me to add to it he's tied for the goalie lead in scoring oh thank you him and uh Peter Kachekov have three assists each, so three points. Wow. So, yeah, whatever that is, 17 wins in 25 one-goal games.
Starting point is 01:56:49 No one on the flame scores. Not true. Dustin Wolf. Dustin Wolf has three points. And to think he's only as he's like very recent draft pick in terms of, I think, goalie terms in my eyes, 2019 draft pick. And you think about the pandemic for the 2020 and 2021 development ages and how many players out of that era are fucked because of it.
Starting point is 01:57:11 And Dustin Wolf, somebody who's come and went through that. Seventh rounder. Is he seventh? Oh, yeah, seventh round. 214th overall. He was nearly last. He was the 28th pick of the seventh round. Unreal.
Starting point is 01:57:26 Wow. He's turning 24 in a couple weeks. Seventh round draft pick. Very recently to be one of the best goalies in the league. I just want to give him some kudos. No, I think you should. I think you should. What about what do you got for Connor?
Starting point is 01:57:38 Connor who? Hellebuck. You got any cool stats? Where does he play? Winnipeg? Oh, I thought KHL or something. You probably don't know that because there's no Wi-Fi there, so he doesn't have any online presence, but he does play there.
Starting point is 01:57:50 He sounds like an ECHL goal. You guys are truly... I love... Are you kidding me? I'm Connor Hellebuck's biggest fan. You could argue nominating Wolf for the Vesna this year. There's some very good candidates, though. Very good candidates.
Starting point is 01:58:05 Hellebuck depends on who you ask. vasilevsky kemper thompson damn but he's right there 9 15 save percentage frig off uh what else we got um 22 12 and 5 this was a funny one because it features uh the greatest moment in pro sports history um doug too said what is a moment you'd like inducted into the hall of fame so we get a moment out of the nhl history that should be in the hall of fame so if you had to hang a picture of a moment like your favorite moment that goes in the nhl hall of fame doug put an idea to get us inspired got it number one merrick malik between the legs shut up i hate this next question that is my favorite moment in nhl history that is my pick for the hall of fame moment uh i want merrick
Starting point is 01:58:54 malik through the leg give me dominic moore having a breakaway without a stick what i don't remember that it was in a leaf game against the canucks so are these supposed to be good or bad our personal hall of fame personal because i like the obvious one is bobby or diving through the air after you don't want that i don't want that nonsense all right that's probably i tried in the hall okay um your personal hall of fame moment that's a damn good question yeah the next question ovechkin hitting 50 goals with a hat trick in the second last game of the season and then signing autographs in the concourse as a healthy scratch the next game i'll give you ovechkin but that over-the-head goal that he scored in his
Starting point is 01:59:34 rookie year. That is a that's a Hall of Fame moment. It's still the greatest goal he's ever scored. Funny enough, Doug had that as one of the ones to get inspired by. So there you go. That's a good one. I really love that one. Doug also wrote, Sean Avery screening Brodeur. Oh.
Starting point is 01:59:49 You know what? There should be a Hall of Infamy. Yeah. Like that literally got rules changed. Yeah. It changed the NHL rules forever. Inducted into the Roger Nielsen wing. Yeah. He's responsible for like half the rules in the league yeah just i love that uh any other steve you got some i assume in your back of your mind pavel datzuk making two guys hate each other you deke them so
Starting point is 02:00:14 bad um you could easily have a pavel datzuk wing yeah yeah uh i assume who's the what's the khl team with the big a as the logo the big red a is that off the mobile east yeah he was on the uh um the cage no he was he was i think he's a part of their management group or something but he was at their game and he had their hat on and everything i was like oh there he is pavel um interesting yeah yannick perot's face-off percentage yeah outrageous outrageous gotta be there face off dave steckles face-off percentage dude uh do you include fights i think if you're talking about hall of infamy absolutely like ron hextall felix poppin oh yeah um yes uh john tortorella trying to fight who was who did he try and fight i mean he came out of the locker room
Starting point is 02:01:05 he tried to get oh it's the calgary coach the calgary bill peters he literally tried to fight him it wasn't bill peters he tried to fight him in the hallway no mike no no no no it's further back god damn how many coaches like almost every other coach from that era except the oh no uh the guy who used to coach colorado what's his name the french the french i know he's francophone bob hartley not bob hartley is it bob hartley i think it was bob hartley why did i think he was francophone maybe he is i don't know he is is he he's allowed to have that name i think his name is bob hartley yeah it's bob hartley oh okay good let me yeah yeah it was uh yeah 11 years ago and he's from hoxton i was working that night at cbc that was a friggin insane here's you go
Starting point is 02:01:48 throw that out patty there's there's torts down there i love that yuri hudler's just in there like i'm not gonna do much here but i'm just gonna stand look at him he's like i know i just want to go sit down john tornorella trying to take on the entire yeah he's gonna hey hey this don't worry fellas i got it under control i think that's got to go in the hall confused giordano next to him i think it is i who's the big guy joel colburn no that's joel colburn wow after the leafs traded him yeah yeah yeah um i can't believe it was that long it's one of my favorite nights at cbc uh you were working at cbc when this happened i was working gee i think i was alone in the room and what was great is no one knew no one knew because it happened in
Starting point is 02:02:33 a tunnel fans don't see this the only people who would have seen it are people who had access to this camera right which was us and like no one else it was like the broadcast truck and like a few people back at the studio me being one of the few people and pj stock behind the scenes was lose in his mind and they were in commercial break when it happened and i was like oh my god when we return and people see this footage for the first time they're gonna lose their friggin mind and i remember just having my twitter at the ready like i knew about it before anyone else did and people lost it like did torts get to coach the rest of the game i don't remember i don't i don't know the details of the fall he was promptly suspended i know that much yeah
Starting point is 02:03:21 as he should be uh yeah hey there's chris tannev hey there's so many cameos wow where's the tannev one there he is big earn ryan mcgrath look at young chris tannev whoa does he have young and handsome yeah zoom in on his teeth maybe i don't know how handsome how handsome yeah there's tanny tanner what a crazy night yeah that's got to be in there the hall of him yeah that one goes in any anyone else you can think of have another donut that's that's got to be in the hall yeah what's his name jim i don't what was his name big yelling at pat burns wasn't it no he's yelling at the ref oh pat burns fighting yelling at the other coach though whatever that i got the two things confused yeah no it was good have another donut yeah no i love that um we should uh we should get
Starting point is 02:04:09 in a certain edmonton writer uh talking about corsi we should do that one oh god which one there's so uh it was is it specters um course expected by whom oh no that's that's harrington oh is that yeah that was harrington and i'm pretty sure the buffalo podcast isn't there a buffalo podcast or detroit one called expected by whom i'm pretty sure their name they named it after that i'm sorry mark specter yeah no no i'm all right i assume you hate coursey but that was specs had some wild takes but i don't think it was that no we should get expected by whom should go in the hall of fame well now we're getting into the hockey twitter hall of fame and which is a great collection of moments there should be a book like why is there not a coffee table book
Starting point is 02:04:55 boom million dollar idea the best early morning moments from hockey twitter just yeah outrageous blackburn yeah b would have he's got those on like speed whatever man that's he's amazing with that forward by greg washinsky yes oh greg would be you'd have to talk to him first just an entire 50 page chapter called tweets that almost got me beat up yeah how many how many death threat level tweets do you think greg is public like legit death threats well we have him on and greg that's your story to tell in the book in the book in the book uh does uh just a selfie for now make the oh jesse i assure you i don't know what tweet you're talking about jesse if that tweet ever existed and
Starting point is 02:05:49 i don't think it did nope couldn't have couldn't have it's all alleged i would imagine it would be the cover oh no i don't know on the cover oh that'd be like making a hot a hat that says tetas hey your vip episode speaking of tetas uh talking about the texas rangers terrible hat uh is out and you should check it out it's actually a really funny episode those i sometimes i just i wonder like again i say it on the show but like there are no actual adults no like anybody who says oh like people are there's some people that are like super super they're there really isn't they're not that smart they're not uh and you'll see and find out why uh on the the ip episode so we're gonna wrap for today uh we got one last thing to do we're not gonna wrap
Starting point is 02:06:33 you we'll never ask we'll be here tomorrow if guests waiting outside our studio adam literally is like hey do this on the show you're never gonna wrap and then he forgets about it um and then we never get to it so i have to force these things into the show get it so adam wanted to bring up this oh yeah he did not remember hammering the apex so can you can you talk about So Mike, a listener of ours donated a race. Mike Schmidt. Mike Schmidt race sim rig. And Jesse got the computer and got the monitor and all the cameras all set up
Starting point is 02:07:06 because we didn't have a gaming computer. Now we do. And Tim and I go through each track this season as a part of nailing the Apex. So this is the, you know, Australian Grand Prix is happening this weekend. This is Melbourne. This is Albert Park. And Tim is using this race sim for the first time. and he says what's described there are dead spots on the sim so meaning when you turn the steering
Starting point is 02:07:28 wheel nothing happens and so tim has had to come in several times he's actually in the next room right now still configuring this for a race car driver because it is a race car level there are dead spots to tim like i was on the rig and i was like this thing is so hard i don't get it it's so fast yeah and like to him he's so precise because he literally was a professional driver he can feel little dead spots in the steering wheel that like i don't know they exist like steph curry bouncing the ball and it didn't bounce that one a hundred percent same thing so yeah for anybody listening right now on our youtube channel you can find actually i'll link it in the description you can watch adam and and tim doing the melbourne track as adam just said uh in f124 ea sports and
Starting point is 02:08:14 yeah it's a pretty cool rig and you get to watch them do it and we're gonna do this each week so Click that link and you can watch it. It is going to be fun because Tim goes off the track a few times and I know how competitive Tim is. And Tim does not like going off track. So it's going to be fun. We're going to do this all season long
Starting point is 02:08:32 and it's a blast. It's actually great. I'm just basically there shit-talking him. He's like, okay, you try it. I'm like, that was terrible. That was terrible. So I don't know what it is. When you drive a car and you accelerate,
Starting point is 02:08:43 you don't just go slam on the accelerator. But when you get into a race sim because it's not a car, You go slam on the accelerator, but what happens when you do that in the actual sim is you flip the car around. It just spins right out. And there's no traction control.
Starting point is 02:08:57 And that thing is so intense that it actually, you can make it like race level. And those cars don't, Indy cars specifically don't have power steering. F1 cars do. But you can like, guys have broken their hands if they haven't let the steering wheel go in a crash. Good Lord.
Starting point is 02:09:12 So that's the level you can have that thing at. We're not doing that. Tim is. Tim is. yeah yeah but you're having your forearms that'll work a fucking car now we can wrap yeah uh let's wrap yeah let's wrap it up so anyway thank you so much for listening we love you have a great the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer
