I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.

Challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcf walk.ca before we start the show today we did want to do a quick shout out to john garrett and his family john garrett longtime broadcaster for the canucks and also player uh he was a goalie for them as well uh this is one of the guys that i think is the most beloved in the in the community
Starting point is 00:01:59 um he was working right up until earlier this week and unfortunately passed away at the age of 75 i can tell you i had no interactions with john uh over my career but producer hayden who does a lot of my streams when he worked for sports net said that when john would call in or talk to you or come in he was one of those people that if he asked you how you were he really waited for your answer looked you in the eye wanted to know uh one of the kindest people out there yeah there's only been kind words coming out about him yes oh it's been great to hear all the tributes and everything and it was it was so strange because yeah i was watching the playoff games with him and then all of a sudden you get the news and it's really shocking and sad yeah so he's a fantastic
Starting point is 00:02:37 example of a life well lived right just you see the outpouring of love i was saying last night too you know like guys like like bowen obviously retiring this year john garrett sadly passing away You know, there are there are people in broadcasting and this is what can make it so special that it's sort of funny. They do things and they capture a city in a way that nobody else could. Right. You know, you're trained in broadcasting to be generic and not. Well, we don't want to get too much personality out there because that might turn some people off. Guys like John Garrett. Joe was another guy that I would suggest that where you just they grabbed you and you couldn't not listen. You couldn't not hear what they had to say, and you couldn't not love them.
Starting point is 00:03:19 John was one of those guys, a total unique guy. So a big shout-out to his family, our condolences, and to the city of Vancouver, all the Canucks fans who are sad today. John Garrett, rest in peace. The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Oh, wow. Nice shot, Jesse. I hope you guys are watching otherwise listening you will not understand this
Starting point is 00:03:48 now we've got an exciting show today there's a lot to talk about including Jesse's unbelievable jump shot Jesse Steph Curry Blake is what we call him but we've got Doug Gilmore and Scotty McKay joining us later in the show to talk about the Leafs talk about Dougie's got a new brand of
Starting point is 00:04:03 hard iced tea that he wants to otherwise he wouldn't be here he wouldn't join us he's coming to join us which we're very excited about yes in the meantime though uh i think we need to talk about the uh the games last night i don't want to start with the oilers not just because i'm covering the series and doing the streams but because the edmonton oilers played their best hockey game of the postseason last night and i think the
Starting point is 00:04:28 deeper that this series goes the more uh-oh i get for anna no adam sorry whistle flag on the play flag on the play the oilers are good and that doesn't fit with my eastern bias oh so every week we get one eastern bias card i'm playing mine we're not talking about him you're just not going to talk about the oilers at all nope habs bolts tonight what do you got well this episode will come out about two hours before that game starts doesn't matter so we are not going to spend a ton of time on center of the universe okay no uh listen i we said it last show they're down three won for most teams that means you're screwed one game and you're like uh-oh it uh it reminded me of uh and it's weird that i forgot about this but the oilers have just played so much damn hockey
Starting point is 00:05:22 they were down three nothing to florida in four seven um the first time they played against each other and the first game that the Oilers won you were like this is going seven first game you're like oh oh okay well see you in a week when this series is still going and that's sort of how last night felt it did and you know what was amazing is everybody uh everybody freaked out when CJ tweeted that uh McDavid and Dreisel were not at practice I'm like they're playing. They're playing. 24 minutes for Connor.
Starting point is 00:05:58 They're playing. They're just, oh yeah, they need to practice. They need to sharpen their skills at this point. I think they're okay. What blew me away, honestly,
Starting point is 00:06:05 was that they took what they did in the first and third periods against the Ducks in game four and just did it the whole game. Their second periods have been awful and they were able, they smothered the Ducks, especially in the neutral zone.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Hey, our goalies haven't been very good. What if we just didn't allow shots? what if we just simply did that and the shots that got through conor ingram had for most of the first period the oilers had more goals than the ducks had shots yeah yep uh yeah they're in deep trouble you think so they're in deep i mean they're going back to anaheim oh boy though oh boy you're going back to anaheim if you drop that one i don't think you take seven in edmonton i don't it would be very hard to there's no question about
Starting point is 00:06:51 that now uh going into this game jesse blake who led the ducks and hits uh vl cutter goche i was gonna say wow isn't that surprising you didn't ask me did you no i didn't i asked jesse uh and and really interesting and him and beckett seneca seem to be getting under the skin of the oilers but and vl has obviously some hits but i don't think he plays enough for him to be leading in in hits maybe the hits per minute leader yeah probably um i'm curious jess your takeaways from yesterday's game um specifically uh your favorite player of all time evan bouchard on the opening goal great pass first of all um i want to show you guys uh who i actually want to talk about i know i know you started with evan bouchard had a tic-tac-toe tic-tac he went he was bouchard
Starting point is 00:07:42 to mcdavid to dry side like i was like oh that's a jesse blake segment right there great fantastic this is this is the opening goal here by the Edmonton Oilers anybody watching it's Evan Bouchard coming right over the blue line and there's three ducks in the zone looking at him then there's one over there by the boards playing with another Edmonton Oiler no look at him straight knees typical Bouchard look at him moments later if we can just go pure hockey guy here what a fantastic job by putt coles and to find open ice it's it's nobody's there and then moments later someone's there and evan bouchard's able to find them he gets this puck he he scores and that's the opening goal and that's who i want to talk about because he's on the line that i think is
Starting point is 00:08:27 having one of the best coming out parties right now for this postseason the dry sidle captain in putt coles in line he's been fantastic dry sidle looks like he's in peak dry sidle form I know we were worried about all the injuries and everything, but the goals he scored in this game and just all series long, he's been driving the momentum for that line. And Pod Kolzin just knows what he needs to do as a player, as a bit piece on that line next to Dreisaitl. They've found some perfect chemistry there.
Starting point is 00:08:56 You're keeping it around forever. You have peak Dreisaitl, which is Dreisaitl at 100%. Throw that in the garbage. Dreisaitl at like 75%, 80%. That's the best player on the planet. Absolutely. Nobody's better than that guy. No one's better than that guy.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Especially when McDavid's also a little banged up and he's like, ooh, I get to go at 70%, but I have to do more stuff? This is even better. They probably, or some people are going to hear this and resent the comparison, but Malkin used to be that. Malkin used to be like, oh, Sid's struggling? Cracks his knuckles?
Starting point is 00:09:30 Malkin, all right, let me go off for five points right now. He won a heart trophy. He did win a heart trophy. He did. No, I know. Like, no, I mean, like for people who don't realize. Oh, yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:38 If you're sitting there being like, oh, Malkin's not that. No, no. He's that guy. When Sid's not around, he steps up. He's like, ooh, I get to wear the cape. It just seems like that easy, lazy comparison. But the more you look at their two careers, you're like, they're actually very alike. In a lot of ways.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Minus the Cups. But still, still, the Cup final appearances, they're doing great. Now, it's interesting because when they got up 3-0 in that first period, which was dominant, they scored and whatever there are some some people today criticizing the Oilers because they're um you know their their breakout attempts were not great at five on five they did score in the power play that sort of thing and I I want to caution you on that because what the Oilers did was they played extremely solid defense and if you're looking at a team trying to defend a lead what the Oilers did was they just ran the ducks out so maybe the breakouts weren't the greatest
Starting point is 00:10:33 or whatever also you got to give anaheim some credit here they're very good oh yeah and they're deep and they got a lot of scoring up and down the lineup that fourth line has contributed every line has contributed but what i thought was amazing about the oilers was that when the ducks had a puck behind their own net and you know normally you have a defenseman setting up you know guys are kind of skating around changing whatever the oilers wouldn't let them do that it's we're going to skate you skate you skate you as hard as possible and guys like capon and putt colson have the wheels to do that so you might have missed this because i find it impossible to watch the intermission panels when i'm streaming because i'm either running something during the going to
Starting point is 00:11:12 the bathroom or going to the bathroom or reading something or whatever but kevin bx was talking about how poorly lucas dostol handled the puck oh the second goal was unbelievable like because he got faked out by a four check from zach hyman which can happen can't happen but like it it's one of those skills where oh you know just stop the puck yeah it's it's not that simple if you're a great goalie at stopping the puck it's it's still not quite enough there there's that upper echelon of goalie like would martin brodeur have been martin brodeur if he didn't handle the puck the way he did no i don't think so i don't know that was a part of his game they had to change the rules they changed the rules because of the thing that he did better than anyone else in the
Starting point is 00:11:57 league yep it's it's important and it costs the ducks jesse can you go to game center and pick up the second goal i'd like to show people this because this is illustrative of what i'm talking about in terms of the crazy four check that the oilers are able to put on um uh oh i thought you were gonna if you're going play that's great but the oh i was going dots uh because dots will work on this one and and you know the the goal steve brings up so so when you are a goalie you look at number one here that's doestall stops behind the net okay pause it here so this is great yeah you see what he's not doing he's this is not tending the goal that he is not tending the goal but he's a good puck mover yes now he's got two options here he can do the backhand to number 14
Starting point is 00:12:37 or he can do the forehand thinking that maybe number 60 is available now he's got calorn number 17 at the top there you can see him and grandlin's coming in late so he goes i'm gonna go forward side but instead of wringing it around the boards because he knows Zach Hyman's going to throw his body into the board to try to block that puck he goes for a much riskier option which is throwing it basically through the slot watch what he does here and to nobody no and this is what leads to the goal and that goal basically squeaks in like it's NHL 2026 and your controller died uh it was very very close but this goal i think is what got him pulled and to be honest with you i think the team around him sort of let him down too because where's grandlin where's like what is what is
Starting point is 00:13:24 colorn doing there well they're probably adapting to the bad play their goalie made like is the one thing i can think of yeah like okay hyman's gonna uh close the puck off on the boards i don't know let him because like he still then has to work for it and ultimately find someone well yeah the pucks behind the net yeah right so it's not great and that's all credit to the oilers they they took away the easy options but um i don't know man don't throw it yeah it's up the middle yeah usually usually doesn't work out well now joel quinville said that pulling uh when he was uh when he was asked last night that was he said it was as much about the team as it was about lucas so you know he's like he's starting the next game no big deal i do have to give billy husso some
Starting point is 00:14:09 credit he came in and did a pretty good job he was solid yeah what do you allow one yeah and and made some pretty good saves as well the other end conor ingram's numbers are ugly guys but i've been saying all series that he's actually been pretty good it's the rebounds and the rush chances the oilers have been giving up and the guy that that again i'm going to bring his name up evan bouchard playoff evan bouchard defense is really good and he was able to shut down a couple of odd man rushes that the ducks had last night just by stapling himself to a forward well adam i can't believe it's taken us this long to get here but you know you want to talk about evan bouchard's defense yeah yeah let's talk about the most underrated part of his game is offense yes yeah
Starting point is 00:14:50 no one ever talks no one ever does especially out east all right ever ever it's a shame really Evan Bouchard moved into 23rd all-time for scoring amongst defensemen in the playoffs. Who did he pass? He passed someone. You're not going to believe the name. All-time? Yes. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:13 Somebody who's had to play a lot of hockey. Is it like one of the late 70s Montreal Canadiens? It is someone who is active. Currently? Oh, I think I know this. You reveal it. You reveal it. Kale McCarr, he passed Kale McCarr in fewer games.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Kale McCarr has 87 points in 83 games. Bouchard has 88 in 80. The next person, by the way, two points away from Sergey Gonchar and Sandus Ozilinch. If this series goes seven or if the Oilers were to go to the second round, he's going to pass Duncan Keith. That's crazy. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Jesse, does that mean that Cale McCarr should give up his Norrises? Yes. Yeah. It's time, right? Fraud. Fraud. Shouldn't have been on Team Canada. That's what I mean.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Should have been Evan. Should have been Evan. It's a fun series, man. It's a really, really fun series. So here's my question. We've got the game tomorrow night. Do you guys have any predictions? Can the Edmonton Oilers do, in your mind, the Edmonton Oilers push this to seven games?
Starting point is 00:16:19 I'd like to hear if you're confident in the goaltending standing up, like keeping up with where it was. You mean the Edmonton one? If you think Ingram can maintain this form that he has. Unpopular opinion. Because he was pulled, and he didn't start one of the games in the series. Listen, man, it's funny. I thought they were going to go Jari, because he was good.
Starting point is 00:16:38 I think that if you go back and you look at the goals the Ducks scored, a lot of them are rush or rebound. And if you look at the shots, If somebody tells you today, oh, the Ducks really dominated play in that game, look at the shots and whatever, they didn't watch. That's score effects. It was 3-0 like nine minutes in? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:57 It's not. Guys. The thing with the Ducks, the kinds of shots the Ducks got, is it reminds me of when Carolina's getting shots but they're not scoring, which is I'm going to get the initial shot on you and I'm not going to get the rebound. And so Ingram is making the initial save, which is most of what you need from your goaltender.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And he always was. It's just that earlier in the series, the Oilers were like, well, but what if we let him make the second and the third save too? And they were clearing the pucks and they were clearing bodies. If you watch six on five before the Ducks took that penalty at the end of the game, they're circling, circling, circling. It looked like the Leafs with Marner, Matthews, Nylander out there cannot get to the inside.
Starting point is 00:17:41 And I think that bodes well for the Oilers goaltending. Now, I think Dostal's been the best goalie in this series by far. He's amazing. But can Conor Ingram stand up? Yes. It's just they're going to have to continue to clear bodies and pucks. It's super simple. It's going to be way harder for the Oilers to play the game they did yesterday in Anaheim.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Why do you say that? Because this is a young team. They've got some veteran pieces and stuff. But why would it be harder in Anaheim? uh quenville has the opportunity to control matchups um with home ice and everything and they just didn't get shots which is the one thing you can pretty much count on the ducks to have yeah is offense and and shots um i think it's gonna be a close game it's not gonna be like this one but i do think the others pull it off jesse what do you think you think the others pull it
Starting point is 00:18:35 off it's gonna be tough i think the home ice thing is an important point because quenville is really good at that line matching and he has been throughout this entire series and shutting down mcdavid and unleashing the right bodies at him so it is going to be tougher in anaheim if they if the edmonton oilers are able to take the one game six in anaheim then i think they win game seven guaranteed i don't think anybody's picking the ducks in that game seven but if as well if they lose game six then it's over right so if this is the game the ducks have to win i think this game six and if it goes to seven they're done uh colton dock by the way i thought underrated presence uh back in the lineup for edmonton so i think he's gonna have a big game six you think
Starting point is 00:19:14 so yeah just like his importance on the four check and just being a battering ram right i mean if you if you think you can make their goalie panic with the puck he's not a bad guy to throw no that's true that's true now i'm looking at the ducks season by season the last time the ducks won a series was 2016 2017 and consequently that was that was matthews by the way first season in the league uh uh first that was that was the last time they even won a playoff game before this year because they made it the next year but the sharks swept them so they uh won the first round they swept the flames won the second round but lost in the conference finals to the preds i forgot the ducks that year went that far they oh that was the kessler johansson series they freaking
Starting point is 00:20:00 hated each other um and then was it it was the oilers they beat in the second round right yes 4-3. With that ridiculous goalie interference that wasn't, but was, but wasn't. Right. But Cam Talbot was on fire for the Edmonton Oilers. He played over 70 games that year. How different is the Pete Shirelli era in Edmonton if they win
Starting point is 00:20:20 that last game? Might still be there. Who knows? Honestly, right? And that's where we started to really see it. It's like, oh, this Leon Dreisaitl, he might be something. Who is this guy? Flashing the pan. Yeah. Oh, the kid they they sent down to the whl i don't know this is what i'm saying i it's it's been a very very
Starting point is 00:20:40 fun series but there have been a lot of them um and i think before we get to any of the rest of them unless you guys have more to add on this series uh we should probably uh get to our ontario toyota dealers everyone loves a power play but when it comes to power and capability nothing delivers quite like the toyota tacoma now we've talked about the 6400 pounds of towing capacity with the i-force engine gentlemen we see a lot of towing capacity a lot of power in the playoffs um what's your best comparable in the last couple of days to what the tacoma is embodying the spirit uh i think a lot of people are being exposed to this person's shot and size and just clutch performance for the first time especially out east i'm gonna go with uh fantasy sleeper
Starting point is 00:21:29 evan bouchard actually for for force interesting is it the slide is it the bush bombs it's the bush bomb absolutely fantasy sleeper evan bouchard jesse blake what about yourself can i do a legacy pick yes because when i heard when i whenever i hear you talk about the jbl speakers one person comes to mind and also i know when you start this thing you talk about how everyone loves a power play and power force and all that one person has never been more dominant on the power play because he doesn't really do anything besides score on the power play and he loves a jbl speaker because bands the make her dance oh alexander ovechkin is he not perfect for the tacoma he actually taking out that jbl speaker playing bands and make her dance sitting on the power play
Starting point is 00:22:15 all career long just scoring a thousand goals and getting his subway subs just crushing a sub and some cheetos and hot cheetos yeah yeah you know because he's built like a fridge and so is the toyota tacoma just big and burly and powerful and i was like ovi would be perfect your favorite hockey player eats like a raccoon all of them but in the comfort of a tacoma with 10 speakers from that jbl sound system jesse good call by the way you could take a jbl speaker with you from the truck there's the blue into the locker room into the locker room that's right if you're ready to elevate your game both on your pick on my pick i think honestly i wanted i wanted to i was going to go legacy i thought you were going pittsburgh penguins i wanted to i wanted to give gino malkin
Starting point is 00:22:57 his due because there is a clip which we're going to play later in the show of him firing a puck at the flyers net or not the flyers net the bench okay incredible uh he's such a he is such a force out there even at his age and uh and just man it's gino right you guys know how he is mean gene so So if you're ready to elevate your game both on and off the ice, the Toyota Tacoma is ready. Visit shoptoyota.ca or your local Ontario Toyota dealer during red tag days now through May. Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them. You need it. Welcome to the show, guys. We're going to talk about hard hitting, which is the new Dougie Gilmore spirit in every can is the is the saying. So we're going to talk about
Starting point is 00:25:42 the lemonade here in just a second. But in the meantime, guys, playoffs happening right now. And Scott and Doug, you guys have been obviously very, very intimately involved in the NHL. Doug, we know you're we've got your resume. They sent it to us in the mail. Scotty, for those who don't know, was longtime equipment manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I'm curious about who you like watching. Who's a player that stands out to you where you're like, man, I just love watching this guy play?
Starting point is 00:26:11 Well, I've known him since he was 12 years old at peak where my boys went to school back in the days. It's Connor McDavid. Yeah. Yeah, he's pretty special. Yeah, they had their own. It's a private school. It was an athletic school, sorry.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And, you know, we'd have exhibition games against other teams and Connor would play the first period. And they said, just go back and get your equipment up because I think it was like 12-1. Let the other guys play. So, but just to see him at that age and how special he was. So, to this day, he works on his skills and just look at him go. Yeah, he's pretty amazing. So, he was amazing back then. That's good to know.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Scotty, what about you? I'd have to agree with Doug. um you know conor mcdavid i've been lucky enough to meet him a few times and he's such a special player and he's he's really a special guy off the ice too like he's a he's a great guy um you know speaks volumes for the game of hockey let alone the the uh oilers where he's playing right now and he's yeah he's he's just exciting every time he gets a puck it's something happens so yeah full agreeance there scott i can ask doug what his favorite doug story is but i want to ask you what your favorite doug story is what's something people might be surprised to know you know what
Starting point is 00:27:36 i don't think there has been or is a better practical joker in the nhl really dougie dougie dougie was a great player on the ice but even better practical jokes off the ice like he would and and it's it was kind of my way of not being nervous before you know the day of the game or but even before warm-up sometimes i'd be uh still doing something so there's a lot of different things that would happen and it's always happened to me as well so uh one of the funniest one was in calgary i forget who it was but somebody cut my tie and and uh socks and um so i grabbed their car keys and i took it to the skate sharpener and so this car wins his car wouldn't start but there's nothing wrong with it so it was awesome that's amazing that's great i love that jess
Starting point is 00:28:31 there's the brilliance of doug gilmore yeah does your does your daughter know how important you are to toronto like in what you've done and is there perspective there yeah she does uh you know it it was it was a pretty cool story uh she did some commercials and different things and Toronto Maple Leafs called and said the next generation game uh why don't you come in for an interview well she memorized three paragraphs read it off and they looked at me and I said don't look at me I can't remember my name so um she's a special talent and she got to do a couple games uh next generation games and uh she got to interview me and you know it came back to haunt me the first thing she says is that's your first time here amazing so yeah playing some of the uh
Starting point is 00:29:20 you know the outdoor games whether it's uh you know just like shorji the other day uh she gets to see uh me uh going about two miles an hour now but uh that's all that's all i got but the hands never leave they always oh no no no they're at customs man they're gone there's that myth busted i guess we all know that that uh the leafs missed the playoffs this year well documented but you know and we're all kind of on this panel getting used to the fact that we're watching hockey uh the playoffs are fun to watch if you don't have a dog in the race because you're not having a panic attack but i i um i'm curious doug because you know you have you're so beloved because of the playoffs like yeah the regular season stuff was great and we all loved
Starting point is 00:30:06 that and was amazing but the playoff stuff is what everybody talks about can you remember can you give us your favorite playoff memory as a member of the toronto maple leafs well that's an easy one and one of scotty's good friends kujo the obviously the wraparound goal and it's something that yeah it's something that um you know when you get into the playoffs uh just the energy that you feel and the momentum that's going into it um you you know you're not making money anymore you whether you're playing for a contract or or whatever it is but it's that compete level and it's something that uh you know you can never get back the emotions that you have and different things but you wanted to go out and and uh you know do something for the for the team
Starting point is 00:30:53 and that goes with obviously you know i had a bit of skill and but it was uh the work ethic and and you know sometimes the game was a little bit different you know we had a red line and uh players would take liberties on you and yeah that that's when you take their number and you know you figure out at the right time when to get them back so you know it's funny you mentioned that wraparound goal against st louis um uh curtis joseph has been interviewed about that game because he was the guy in net for st louis and he said because you know the maple leaf gardens didn't have any parking lots like i i know from from other players that i've talked to specifically wendell clark they used to just walk in the door and you'd have to hide to get into maple leaf
Starting point is 00:31:33 gardens if you were a player and i remember hearing kujo talk about the fact that when the blues got on the bus after that the fans outside were apoplectic like crazy and they just surrounded the bus and the bus just had to sit there and it was a blues they could not leave uh so it's just you know it's just a really special moment now um steve you had a question you want to go to uh Yeah, well, so other than the classics, right, like we know the Cujo moment and everything, well, rather the wraparound moment. I'm sure you don't remember it as the Cujo moment. What was an underrated playoff moment for you that you think often gets overlooked? Oh, that's, you know, let's go back to Adam for a second.
Starting point is 00:32:22 so back in our days we would have i lived 20 feet from make-believe gardens on wood street and felix pop was in the same uh building and so we had an open practice and i looked at the 14th floor and i'm going oh my god how am i going to get in there so i thought about it and i put a ball hat on sunglasses and my own jersey and i stood in line with everybody for about five minutes and I bolted to the side door. So that's how nobody recognized me. Well done. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Man, that jersey looks authentic. That's pretty good. Where'd you get that? That's great. Yeah. You know, when I first got traded to Toronto, we didn't make the playoffs that year. And just the addition the following year with Pat Burns
Starting point is 00:33:12 and Celina and I are still on our defense and putting some older guys with Cruiser. uh mike felino and there was a lot of leadership in there and obviously wendell uh the biggest part of that but um you know there was kind of nowhere to go but up and you know we were only 500 until about uh december and that's when we started going on a bit of a roll and and uh it got better so um the playoffs that first um story there that my grandfather passed away right before we're playing detroit and uh i couldn't go to the funeral but um i asked my mom would you pack all his t-shirts up so that whole playoff run i had my grandfather's t-shirts on wow so that that's
Starting point is 00:33:59 a good memory for me that's i did not know that that's very cool uh uh so i guess we got a couple more questions guys and then we'll let you go because you've been really generous with your time first thing is tell us about the new business venture hard-hitting iced tea lemonade vodka uh This is like the perfect sort of summer drink. Tell us where this idea came from. Why did you guys decide to go with it? Well, let's start with me. That's what I drink at home, vodka iced tea.
Starting point is 00:34:28 And, you know, I have lunch with Scotty all the time when we see each other. He came up with this idea. And I used to, I had a beer out before, but I had to kind of let it go with the partnership that I had there. But this is something that they came up with the design with Andy, Scotty, and actually my wife, Sonia. They put it all together. And the only thing that I really enjoyed about this was the taste test. Scotty, for you, what was the genesis of this?
Starting point is 00:35:08 You know what? Like Dougie said, it was a conversation between the two of us. and uh we're we're much older than you guys um so we just said let's have some fun with this like let's do something you know we we obviously like enjoy each other's company you know uh teammates whatsoever and we we that's what exactly what we've been doing just having fun with it and uh it's starting to take off which has been great to see yeah it's all it's available at the lcb you know lcbo now so people can get it and i know it's a bit of a process to get it in there So that's always an important thing to say.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Last thing I want to ask you guys, and Scotty, this question is specifically for you. You were around the Leafs a long, long time. You saw great leadership. And one of the guys that you worked with a long, long time was Matt Sundin. And his name is obviously in the news. And we know why. Yeah, I want to ask you about just Matt's the person in terms of leadership. Do you have any stories about Matt's and the kind of leader he was?
Starting point is 00:36:06 and and you know that's illustrative for people that they can kind of get a sense of what he might be like if this management thing actually happens oh man i knew this was this a loaded question but i'll do my best i'm sorry i'm sorry i had to ask um no that's okay you know the thing is when i was lucky enough to be there through wendell doug and matt's so great leaders in the room i know for leaf fans that's unbelievable and i still cherish yeah i still cherish those relationships every day um but you know what so wendell you know obviously different type of player than dougie or mats dougie is a different type of player than mats or wendell so the thing i would say about mats is he's more of a silent leader
Starting point is 00:36:54 did most of his leadership on the ice but he's very passionate about the leafs and all this talk about restoring culture and stuff like that these guys are you kidding me like even even kujo who's birthday it is today by the way oh happy birthday these guys were winners these guys were winners and that that whole culture a guy like dougie's out there he's not a very big guy and he's out there playing his butt off every shift that's a culture change and and matt's and wendell are the same type you know guys are natural leaders and and players follow them so to answer your question about him getting into management i think the players would would uh would thrive at having him there and you know it always helps when you look at the wall and say hey that guy's our leader
Starting point is 00:37:38 now he played here he was in the playoffs like and he was great so you know uh i don't have one story about mats but all i can say is like all those guys i mentioned he's a great leader in the room and no doubt he'd be a great leader in management i want to say this before oh go ahead let me tell the story yeah with the all-star game in uh toronto so scotty is a good friend to kujo And so Cujo brings his three, four buddies up, and they're like Navy SEAL guys. And we're at the X Hotel, so I'm staying down there. I'm going out to pass the pucks for the target shooting. So the night before, I got my son there with me.
Starting point is 00:38:15 We're at the X Hotel bar, and it's – Oh. The meeting's there. So the next day, I'm on the ice pass in the pocket. I got to meet Cujo's buddies and all that. and uh the one guy says what the heck is that real estate guy doing on the ice what he thought he thought i was a realtor no way that's funny oh my god who joe who joe and i had a good laugh at that one
Starting point is 00:38:46 well let me just say this before we before we go scotty you're obviously you know uh good friend of the show good friend of mine um doug you are the reason that i started watching hockey as a kid and i know i don't want to embarrass you but that's what it was for steve it was felix jesse i think for you it was matt's right yeah it was definitely matt so to have you on the show is a tremendous honor we want to wish you the best of luck with hard hitting we genuinely mean that i'm very excited to have this on a golf course yeah this to me is they're making just perfect drinks for a golf cart you know you put this in you're gonna have this for a couple holes and then you Maybe you can put it in that obnoxiously large coffee cup
Starting point is 00:39:27 you have this morning. Oh, no, no. That's just ridiculous. Hey, guys, thanks for the time today. We really appreciate it. Pittsburgh and Boston stayed alive. Both teams, if you'd asked me on Monday, I would have been like, they're in big trouble.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Well, okay. Crosby's got that terrifying look. You didn't see that in the first three games, though, did you? No. but then game four and then game five oh my holy and like i've never seen a fan base like okay i'm trying to remember back to last year i hate to make everything about the least but i think this is a good comparison last year the leafs were up three nothing on ottawa game four is tight ottawa wins in overtime game five it's like oh my god what the what are you guys doing are you
Starting point is 00:40:19 seriously doing this again the flyers fan base is beside themselves they and i don't just mean insider j money although he is the most you're handling it quite poorly oh weird they scratch mitch cove and uh they did not it didn't help they all hate they all hate rick talk it this morning i just hope you know that they've never hated them more they're up three two in the series I know it's on their Pennsylvania rival, too. That's the part that blows me away. I saw a tweet from a Flyers fan this morning saying, yeah, Rick talk. It didn't think Vasily Podkolzin was a good NHL either.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Well, well, and then this sort of went under the radar. And this is Lee fan PTSD here. But Pasternak scores that overtime winner. A basically partial breakaway rush. Yep. On a feed from Hampus Lindholm where no one got any skin on him. seen that before but did you see his celebration okay what about this do we need to bring this up no you don't have to but he bangs and crashes into the glass he's giving it to sabers fans
Starting point is 00:41:31 who are flipping him off and he says we're coming back we're gonna be back here because if there's a game seven it's gonna be in buffalo he's skipping right over game six what's what's the point because we're winning that one you know we're winning that one and we're going to be right back here in game seven the reason i put pittsburgh and boston together is not just the color scheme uh they do have the same colors but it's the identity and they have different identities but both of them have i would argue a far more cemented identity than buffalo or philadelphia and that's because of you know the recent track record of both of those franchises they're actually in weirdly similar spots they are like a lot of veteran dna from you know winning
Starting point is 00:42:15 teams i don't think pasta no pasta didn't win the cup with them but he did go to the final with them obviously mcavoy and and guys like that but ultimately they're actually sort of on the up we think after bad seasons they're both in in their similar spot so the thing with boston is they've already aged out of a lot of their stars this is what's going to happen to pittsburgh in the next couple of years right brageron's gone chara chara uh marshan's playing for another team right like there's there's you know but what's happened it seems anyway is that culture has lived on in some of the new players obviously you mentioned mcavoy um who's not new but you know what i mean the new leaders um you know postranak's one of those guys and you know pittsburgh has
Starting point is 00:43:00 always had that they were discombobulated the last three years let's be honest it wasn't great coming off of the Ron Hextall years Dubas made some bad signings as well documented to start off his tenure has had to untangle those and has done a good job doing it um there is a a history here and a uh an ability to win here mentally that the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres all the good things to them like truly i pick buffalo to win the series but they don't have that yet because they have to develop that and jesse i'm wondering for you are you worried about either philadelphia or buffalo and if you are which one are you more worried about i think i'll start with buffalo and the boston game because last night i had we were streaming the
Starting point is 00:43:46 jays game but because of how everything kind of lined up we got to stream the majority of the buffalo boston game which was awesome we did the whole ot a lot of the in between the the regulation time as well and i said like i don't know part way through the beginning of the third period if boss if buffalo keeps sitting back and just allowing this game to be one one it's just gonna tilt more and more and more towards boston it felt like they were a little uneasy in the situation not pushing for offense where they can just explode we saw it in game one where they're down all game they score a bunch as they win the game and that moment never felt it was coming for buffalo maybe they get one lucky maybe there's a good bounce but i felt like as this thing goes
Starting point is 00:44:32 along it's gonna it's gonna lean towards boston and it's you i'm very happy you brought up like the guys who are embodying the the boston bruins mentality kusadinov was the best player on the ice for the Bruins which by the way imagine you'd said that at the beginning of the season oh yeah he's in for a big season like he is dominating on that first line I thought he had so much of the the possession for the Bruins like he would be the driver of that and obviously Pasternak scores but he did a great job and then you have a guy like Aspero who's just physical whenever he's along the boards he's gonna get into a physical battle and he's not afraid of anything and it's just like those extra edges there at buffalo when you're getting down to a game seven or a game six
Starting point is 00:45:15 i don't know if i'm picking them to hang in in those moments when things are really on the line seeing steves and mitten together on the bench pissed me off you have to sit them next to each other like come on and i'm i'm like really critical of his contract because i think it's a little ridiculous but tanner janeau is out there and tanner janeau is not somebody you can push around he was yeah and that's a fourth line player that they trust in big situation because he's been in a lot of big situations Boston is going to be hard to eliminate like we all know that I was amazed Buffalo didn't score in the final five minutes of the third they came so close I still don't know how a couple of those pucks didn't go in so if I had to if I had like what are we even
Starting point is 00:46:02 doing here most likely to choke like i'm i'm gonna i'm gonna put philly ahead of buffalo i think buffalo is more likely to get the job done philly looks nervous well and there's to me there's a there's some mess going on there so matt fay mitchcoff was scratched and apparently uh according to multiple reporters did not want to take warm-up now he was he is back in the lineup and it's he's gonna play uh but oh is that reported yeah yeah but but the guy that uh replaced him whose last name is bump uh great played 15 minutes and scored a goal he bumped him from the lineup there you go and i'm just so who gets bumped well i think that can't be him they're talking like hey he if he comes back or when he comes back in the lineup they need to play him higher up the lineup they
Starting point is 00:46:46 need to get him the ice time or whatever but there are reports also this morning that teams are watching philadelphia right now and mitch koffing going are they gonna cut or go shade this guy are they gonna trade this guy i what they just hate fifth overall picks like yeah they shouldn't draft there um trade down dude the dubious listen i don't think there's anything wrong with pissing off a fiery prospect who's 21 who's young and all right you're mad you're mad because why because i don't think you're playing well enough go out there and make me look like an asshole like that's that's i think what it's got to be about go out there and make me look like a buffoon go out there and be matvey friggin michkov go out
Starting point is 00:47:39 there and be the guy that we all know you can be most of which you if you believe in yourself more than i do then you go out there and make yourself proud get us through the second round let's go earn yourself some money yeah because you've been spending it all season with me well he did have a good back half but jesse you're you're shaking your heads when when when i think it's fine that he didn't take warm-ups i don't think it's that big of a deal and i think mitch kov has a future with the flyers like i i don't know i think it's a little overblown because of the big fan base that he has specifically like he has a lot of fans a lot of flyers fans love him there's just more noise around him when things happen and i don't know if there's necessarily anything internally
Starting point is 00:48:26 going on or if it's just kind of more external stuff because there is things internally going on but if those are just amplified because he has a lot of people who like him and I'm not going to say outright xenophobia but there's a lot of imagination yes because
Starting point is 00:48:42 he the language barrier makes it so that he can't always explain himself articulately right and that's that's a luxury for a lot of players in this league what's he thinking and we're all everyone's just guessing what he's thinking and every story that comes out he can't defend himself and be like that's not true every mitch gov thing feels like it's coming
Starting point is 00:49:08 out of the daily mail and a little tabloid like it feels like we're following like an f1 driver who's in something with his wife and there's like a whole bunch of drama why is it always this level of suspicion and drama around Mitchkoff. There is a TMZ element to it. You're absolutely right. It feels like everything comes out of the, what is the Inquirer in Philly? That's the more tabloidy newspaper.
Starting point is 00:49:31 It feels like everything's coming out of that. Like Cousin Chunis dropping bombs in his afternoon show. If his name was Doug Truck from Welland, he wouldn't be getting this, but his name's Madve Mitchkoff from wherever Madve Mitchkoff's from. Whenever there's a Mitchkoff thing, I always start
Starting point is 00:49:47 with a little skepticism about like is this actually a story or are we just poking at Roy McIlroy's relationship here you know is it that level of trauma or and then it's like okay this is continuing there actually was something there like the the out of shape thing coming into the season that was a true factual thing that happened very real he was not ready and they needed him to play himself into the shape to be ready for an NHL game let's say it wasn't real your coach thought it was good enough you know what's funny about that too i thought uh you know if that happened in toronto people would be like yo why didn't you come to training camp like that but flyers fans have so much ptsd from trading away so many good players specifically i think goche
Starting point is 00:50:31 in the last couple of years that they're looking at this and going do not run another one of these guys out of town you idiots so there's like ptsd there and i thought by making the playoffs and going on the run that they had that flyers fans are going to be like all right i'm coming around to talk it and here we are at game five and they are completely out on him everyone's miserable and i can't wait until this money team they should be having fun until like 12 hours from now it's just complete euphoria yeah yeah absolutely or just the depths of despair yes and the extremes of that story like the extremes weren't where they actually were it was somewhere in the middle where everything was kind of fine by a couple months in everybody was good and he had a good
Starting point is 00:51:11 season and flyers fans like rick tockett's done a fantastic job that he's the sole reason you're in the playoffs right now it's great coaching so i think everything will be fine with them in the end and if i'm truly gonna pick these two series i think both of them uh close it out and they win i don't think either of these teams are gonna i mean that is the most likely outcome and they have played both teams buffalo and philly have been the better teams in the series yeah i think buffalo gets one and philly gets one hey listen you probably don't have time to make all your meals because frankly let's be honest it's it's it's difficult to meal prep that much your life is busy then you go to the sad corporate food court and eat a sad looking salad and you go this
Starting point is 00:51:48 is really not great i don't love this uh what about tempo that sounds uh much more my tempo and imagine it was ready in two minutes real food real fast without the sad desk lunch and you know you know how that is 20 new recipes every week and they're nutrient rich so you will be satiated and tempo keeps this exciting and you can stay consistent with healthy habits too. Yes, Jesse. Can I read some of the meals to you?
Starting point is 00:52:11 Yeah, please. The Asiago Alfredo Chicken. The Pesto Chicken and Alfredo Penne. Roasted tomato turkey meatballs. Shrimp and corn rotini. That looks and sounds amazing. Chipotle Ranch Meatball Farro Bowl. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:52:32 What's farro? Farro is like a couscous a couscous but it's like a grain it's a it's a grain that you boil and it's actually quite good yeah it's good i like it i think i've had that that sounds good uh butter chicken curry always good oh yeah i don't need this menu like i'm trying to illustrate it's not just like here's some bland tasteless chicken and broccoli it's no you're getting actual meals that sound and look delicious and for a little bit delicious for a limited time tempo is offering our listeners 60 percent off so um get your first box 60 off uh go to tempo meals.com sdp that's tempo t-e-m-p-o

Starting point is 00:54:07 You gotta try Pratt first at A&W. At participating A&W locations in Ontario. Something that could happen tonight. Philly-Pittsburgh could reach the end of Game 6 before Montreal-Tampa reaches the end of Game 5. oh that's true yes that is true yes i had to i even was like no they've played five no they have not this uh the one series that i'm doing is the one that is going to take the long probably good idea started later yeah it did it did no it didn't it started i started later you started
Starting point is 00:54:43 sunday i started sunday he started monday right right yeah you didn't start in the last yeah so every damn game goes over and they hadn't had their two-day break yet so that's why they had it they've had two two neighbors uh before we get to utah yeah oh that's right yes so before we get to freaking going utah vegas i want to hold for just a second how are you feeling about tonight you're doing the stream this is a good way to shamelessly plug that but also like do you have a sense of who's going to take this game none in the slightest um no um i there are times where i'm like oh okay montreal's about to run him over 10 minutes later oh geez montreal was never in this. Tampa's going to
Starting point is 00:55:24 completely run them over. What do you do to neutralize Hagel? I don't know. I don't have a good answer. Is he making Oliver Kapanen look bad? Because I don't think Oliver Kapanen's a bad player. He's young. So based on line rushes yesterday, I think it was Renaud Lavoie had this. Who the hell is that? Oh, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:55:40 Marc-Antoine Godin, sorry. Oh, who the hell is that? Excuse me. Love Marc-Antoine. It doesn't look like Kapanen's going to play. Looks like he's going to get scratched. So who's in? Joe Valeno. Oh, okay. So he's going to be, I believe, fourth line left wing. Oliver Kapanen is averaging less than two minutes of average ice time than the second lowest Habs forward.
Starting point is 00:56:07 Okay, so he's two minutes lower than the second lowest. Yes, I worded that. On average. Absolutely terribly. He's playing like eight minutes a game. And he looks ineffective. So it's not even the penalty. Ignore the penalty.
Starting point is 00:56:19 he's playing like eight minutes a night and he has three total shots in four games like yeah he scored 20 goals he's not going to score 20 goals averaging 0.75 shots per game so you might as well trust issue there with the coach then right well and there's reason for that and if you're heading out on the road against Tampa and John Cooper it's even worse you might as well throw at a player who you think can at least do something positive out there Kapanen needs a reset um as for what you do to shut down hagel five on five they've done a decent job shutting down gensel ish they've done a pretty good job shutting down kucherov they've done a pretty good job shutting down point you can't shut them all down there's too many yeah there's
Starting point is 00:57:09 too many and hagel's the i guess the one where you're taking your chances and he's eating them alive i don't have a good answer there um i'll be fascinated to see if we get a surprise noah dobson look well he was skating uh we mentioned this on on monday show he was skating in broussard he might he might play they don't want to rush him back but like uh again when i was looking at the ice time uh jack eye is essentially not playing and when he is playing he's not doing well and jordan strubel's not playing a ton i think the level of play is just too high for a guy like that and and it's not that he can't be effective in limited minutes but it has to be limited right Jack I specifically like it's he does have a he does have an effect on that lineup
Starting point is 00:57:51 I'm not trying to take that away but it's it's it's got to be in limited minutes because a team like Tampa they'll just expose you now Valeno could be good enough that this doesn't become a factor but what would be fascinating is if when Dobson comes back St. Louis goes okay no Kapanen or Valeno Jack I moves up to forward we use him as our Scott Sabourin and now Dobson's back there so you're essentially doing 11-7 and maybe that's a way of somewhat easing Dobson back but it's game five and then game six of a playoff series I don't know if there's any easing in like you saw McDavid game time decision you played 24 of course yeah like McDavid was not gonna play come on yeah come on it i i as the series gets deeper and muckier and we're going back to tampa
Starting point is 00:58:42 i think things favor tampa but this this montreal team is really good it's been fantastic extremely tight hockey if i'm not mistaken game four featured the first two goal lead that anyone's had that honestly last night was the first three goal lead i'd seen in my series no yeah oh yeah every two goal lead and by the way basically every two goal lead except for the ones that finished the game had been erased well yeah yeah because you got empty netters and stuff yeah that's crazy crazy ridiculously tight two there were five goals i think and two of them went in off of bodies like not even as deflections like they just popped up and tight tight tight Jesse, one of the series we haven't talked about a whole lot yet, outside of, like, Colorado, L.A., which got a nice mention, but we all kind of knew where that was going, is Vegas and Utah.
Starting point is 00:59:39 And it's tied up 2-2. A little bit of stuff with Paterka in a second, but I want to talk to you about just the series. I've thought, I kind of thought that Utah was going to come in and try to outskate Vegas, which I think when they've been effective, they have. But Vegas has surprised me in their pushback, and perhaps they shouldn't. What about this series? Like, they went in an overtime in game four. What about this series sort of stands out to you for level of play, players that are standing out?
Starting point is 01:00:09 Is it Utah that is surprising you? Is it Vegas that's surprising you? I'm glad that the Utah stars that they have are getting some playoff recognition and are finally, like, being known. Like, Lawson Kraus had the great game in game, what was that, three? and then last game you have the goal by clayton keller his first of the postseason first career postseason goal and i'm glad that hey now we're starting to recognize that utah has this unbelievable scoring talent and they're never out of the game it's similar to like buffalo
Starting point is 01:00:40 where they have so many guys with great shots that they're never out of it and that i thought vegas was going to run away with that game i was shocked when utah's coming back and it's not over and then it's an overtime overtime's a coin flip you can really win it in any moment so i don't know i think this is a lot this is a lot tighter than i thought it would be i had vegas winning i think in six or seven but um utah's right there with them yeah they're not scared no they're not like the melka has been fantastic like that's that's one of the x factors that they have over vegas and that any moment vegas's goaltending could collapse and just have a terrible game i that was going to be my question like uh i think it was four straight goals go in utah even took
Starting point is 01:01:21 the lead vegas battled back do you go heart in game five how but he was the one who yeah he allowed four goals on 12 shots you can't that's what i'm saying yeah yeah the game four was crazy with the two goal lead and they had four straight goals and you're just leaking yeah and if you're just this is your team now you're here at any moment you might let in a million goals and your season could be over utah's an underrated team but i think all things equal in net it should be vegas's series like i'm i'm pretty confident in my vegas and six pick but if they've that's what they're getting in net you're gonna have a really hard time here man yeah if they both had the same goalie like yes they're both just 80 overall goalies or something you have eichel and marner
Starting point is 01:02:09 and Stone and Dorofeev got one. Barbashev. Barbashev and look at their decor and you should be able to win. Yeah. You know what's funny? You can't allow four straight goals on 12 shots. Two teams, same division,
Starting point is 01:02:21 goaltending issues. And I trust the Vegas Golden Knights to solve it this summer. I trust the Oilers not to. You know what I mean? I trust the Vegas Golden Knights to trade Aiden Hill to the Oilers. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:33 Potentially could. Yes. Who are you going with? I'm still going Utah. And it's not Hill or Carter Hart. Oh, Hill. Hill won the cup. Or Schmidt.
Starting point is 01:02:42 Because didn't Schmidt play? And Hill backed up last game. And Schmidt has played well in the playoffs. Remember he had that run with New Jersey a few years ago? So I guess we got three options. Oh, my God. I mean. I mean, Hill was on the bench last game.
Starting point is 01:02:57 I'm going Hill. If you have him as your backup, I think you have to play him. I think John Tortorella thinks Carter Hart's his guy. I think you're right. I think you're right. Well, I disagree with the coach. With the coach. Well, this is the thing.
Starting point is 01:03:17 Well, Hill's won. Yeah, but not with me. Anyway, here's Carter. Oh, boy. Four goals and 12 shots, though. That sucks, dude. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:03:29 If you're going to get Hill in, it might as well be at home. because what you don't want to have happen is heart gets lit up in game five and you lose and now you're on the brink of elimination and you're making a desperation goalie decision for game six. That's what happened with Boston
Starting point is 01:03:45 in the Florida series. Yes. Where they kept flip-flopping and they're like, okay, season's on the line. Let's flip-flop back. No, no, they didn't. They didn't flip-flop enough.
Starting point is 01:03:54 Oh, yeah, because they should have flip-flopped earlier. Yes. Yeah, yeah. Because Omar was hurt and they were switching all season and then with a hurt goaltender, they stopped
Starting point is 01:04:02 and yeah when they went to swayman it was too late um boy that's a tough one i think i go hill i go hill yeah with the season not on the line it's probably you're probably right you know you go hill and then you can always go back if things collapse in that game because you've tied it to two so it's okay or like or do you i wonder if tortorella made up his mind before the series even began ride or die you should probably go with the evidence in front of you man yeah that's a tough one so when the leafs finally named their general manager steve what are you going to operate upload to your mom's or a frame um his photos of me uh smiling uh-huh so that she remembers what it looks like oh no steven come on jesse yes um what about you your mother-in-law
Starting point is 01:05:02 has the aura frame in your family yeah steve do you want to pick a photo uh that you want to put to her aura frame right now absolutely so there you got you got three choices here here's a nice family bowling event uh do you want this first one the second one or the third one can you put a steve photo on it you should just a selfie of steve i don't know we have enough time in the ad to do it this one has lit birthday candles so i'm gonna go with that and then yeah and then i'll share it uh right now show now so you hit the button and from right here sending photo to the aura frame there you go it's honestly one of the coolest things we've had the pleasure of talking about and having a promo code with and uh she loves the aura frame she's always playing
Starting point is 01:05:47 with it i'm so happy i can give this to her i want to change my answer a picture of me with matt sundin oh we did have we have interviewed him on this show now this these or frames were named number one by wire cutter and you can save on the gifts for your mom uh by visiting or frames dot ca for a limited time listeners can get 25 off their best-selling carver matt frame with the code sdp that's aura aura frames dot ca slash uh sorry promo code sdp support the show by imagining us at checkout, and terms and conditions apply. Now, you guys know every Friday we do our 100% Clutch Canadians presented by Moosehead Canadian Lager,
Starting point is 01:06:23 but we did have to jump in with a mini version of that. Normally, we pick a player, Canadians, each of us, who throughout the playoffs, no matter who they're playing for, exhibits what it is to be a Canadian hockey player, right? And, I mean, Moosehead is a fully Canadian brand. They're the last one that's brewed here and packaged here and all done here, okay? And they're done in New Brunswick.
Starting point is 01:06:42 Don't you forget it. But what was amazing last night And why we're going to do this a little bit today Is that Buffalo had some technical issues Microphone didn't work during the anthems It started okay But then and again people forget this
Starting point is 01:06:58 There's no Canadian team playing But Buffalo always sings the Canadian National Anthem Because there's a lot of Canadians that are Sabres fans There's a border I've always thought it's a super classy thing to do And last night Really blew us all away Because after the technical issues, what happened?
Starting point is 01:07:15 Did people stand there quietly? They sang the anthem. That's right. Look at them all. Look at them all. They're all there singing. And there's the Maple Leafs up on the video board and everything. And I just thought, guys, how about we say a cheers to Buffalo for that?
Starting point is 01:07:30 I think that was really special. Absolutely. There's obviously been some stuff that's been going on between our two countries the last year. And it was really nice to see, hey, that thing that we have, that still exists. And most people believe it. And you know what? It's the city of good neighbors, so I'm not really surprised. They're a pretty good neighbor.
Starting point is 01:07:46 But yeah, big shout out to all of Buffalo for that. You are our 100% clutch Canadians, even if you're not, presented by Moosehead Canadian Lager. Anything else to add? I think they are. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters. On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research.
Starting point is 01:08:20 Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. All right, let's move on. I want to quickly talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs. This morning, 32 Thoughts featured Elliott Friedman basically saying that if Matt Sundin accepts the role we think he is going to, that it will be Matt as like a VP of hockey ops. And John Chayka will be the general manager, president, whatever they are. I still don't know what the title is. But in this scenario, what I'm still confused about is who's got the power?
Starting point is 01:09:01 because I'm assuming it's going to be John Chayka with Matt's. I'm less interested in answering that question. You're less interested? Yeah. No, no. Can I tell you the question that matters? Okay.
Starting point is 01:09:14 What is the question that matters? Is John Chayka good at this? That is a fair question. That's a very fair question. Just before you jump in, let me just answer Adam's question. No, it was the shitty one. I just want to know the struggle.
Starting point is 01:09:27 Sorry, that's not what I meant. The way I understood he explained it, Matz is above Chayka as VP of Hockey Operations, then Chayka's GM, and then president is kind of just Keith Pelley still. So they don't have a president role because I think MLSC still doesn't want that. So it'd be Matz reporting to Keith Pelley, and Kyle on the pod called it a Shanahan light role. So that's why I think that's why the org chart will go Pelly, Sundin, Chayka.
Starting point is 01:10:02 Okay. That's all still speculation. Nothing's signed. Okay. Yeah. And that's the thing is that it could still go to the Dallas Stars assistant general manager if Sundin says, you know what? I'm going to stay in Sweden.
Starting point is 01:10:14 Anyway, April 2027, I'll be streaming the Habs. Sorry, Steve. You wanted to explode on John Chayka. I don't want to explode on. no okay ectoplasm i'm sorry this is oh no the opposite jesse very much the opposite all right whoa okay he's 36 i think he's already done this he was kicked out of the league for doing something illegal his team got punished for it his resume of signings and draft picks and trades generally speaking sucks ass he had to get reinstated he hasn't worked in the league
Starting point is 01:10:54 in several years this is the toronto maple leafs why is this your guy like we've all there's been so much information just shot at us that ectoplasm like ectoplasm they that the leafs they they've what is it flooding the zone they've just flooded the zone so like we don't even know how to react Did you hear that Mike Fuda's name is... Oh, freak off! Mike Fuda might have met with the board last week, apparently. Okay, well, I don't believe it. I don't believe that.
Starting point is 01:11:26 They would save money because that's an internal hire. That's right, Jesse! He could do the radio show and be GM. They wouldn't even need to ask him for his direct deposit info. He already works for... He'd have to get a new Rogers number. Like, he can keep the same badge he currently has. As we all know, at One Mount Pleasant,
Starting point is 01:11:43 you know, he just goes down there, same key card. you know what mike we're gonna need you to keep doing sports net though because we can't possibly i tell you what if they hire the security for one mountain pleasant at scotia bank arena every player is going to be late forever because holy shit this is the most impenetrable fortress in the entire world um that and enough about that building and the fact that that company can't do a fucking thing right why is this human being the guy i was talking about mike gillis i was like wait a sec this guy hasn't been in the nhl since 2014 he was the gm of a swiss team for a couple years why is this guy you're talking about and now it's john can we pause for a second john shaker
Starting point is 01:12:26 no no matt sundin matt sundin everyone get excited about matt sundin culture culture everyone's who's making the decisions who's making the phone calls that's what i wanted to ask that's why i asked the question off the top matt sundin i love matt sundin i love him very much do we all think he's been up at one two three and four in the morning watching nhl games for the last decade that he's been away i don't think so he's probably i don't think so either okay he's been he's been scouting he could always you know you've seen him in a ton of guelph storm games maybe he's got a yeah oh yeah maybe you just you sound worried jesse jesse here's best case scenario for me best case scenario for me is the Leafs are hung up on the fact that they have so many leaks
Starting point is 01:13:18 after that athletic article and they are just feeding us bullshit to try to figure out who those leaks are and also just distract us and the person they hire is like good and not one of the names that they've been throwing out worst case scenario is all the information we have is true and they're hiring let's call it what it is what one of the most notorious snake oil salesmen in the sport is that what you think what well i i just because because here's the and and i i don't know i don't know i'm open to this because i have to be but but you know to go to that level like i think for me it's sort of like okay he was yes he was the coyotes general manager yes and let's be honest
Starting point is 01:14:14 the coyotes were poorly run between multiple management groups no they didn't do a great job uh drafting at that time and asset management was poor but they also had no resources and they hired a 26 year old this he was 26 this is just the broke version of the conversation we had when the Leafs got Brad Treliving right so uh he does the job that he does in Calgary did some good things did some not so good things and when the Leafs got him Flames fans were like oh buyer be aware watch out for this guy and we're like yeah but he wasn't allowed to do the things that he wanted to do he wasn't allowed to fire his coach meddling ownership meddling president oh sounds very hilariously he stepped right back into that he stepped right back into possibly a worse version
Starting point is 01:14:59 of it uh to be honest and then oh you hey he got to live life without a boss and it turns out it was worse and then it led to him having more life without a boss because he wasn't employed anymore um so we're gonna get this guy who like again i'm gonna remind everyone this is the toronto maple leafs job you have the pick of the litter you have brandon pridham who's been here forever you have Ryan Hardy who you've trusted to be one of your associate or other co-GMs or whatever you've interviewed I think every assistant general manager in the league you've interviewed Mike Gillis you've had talks with Matt Sundin and the guy you're landing on is John Chayka I don't think we realize what we're talking about well what is what is it about specifically what
Starting point is 01:15:54 is it about john is it the resume in arizona that bothers you what is it what is it that bothers you yeah about this the resume in arizona followed by getting fired with cause followed by suspended with cause suspended with cause and having to get reinstated and he's gonna get like the job what this guy is a good i don't i think he's a mediocre candidate to get back into the league in a supporting role right so like there's guys like like pete shirelli and john ferguson jr who to different degrees weren't good as general managers but have worked for a long time as assistant general managers afterwards and depending on who you asked have done a decent job i'm not so sure about shirelli john ferguson jr seems to have done a pretty decent job
Starting point is 01:16:52 how does this guy keep falling up based on what the Leafs can't get the seventh overall pick this year and thank goodness because if they did then Chayka would trade it for Derek Stepon like he did in Arizona and no one remembers or cares because it happened in Arizona i beg your pardon why if there's a good justification for this i'm all ears and i'm open to hearing it the article i read yesterday you know i i guess we all just forgot and uh you know time heals all there was an article from the late great jason botchford where he was talking about the canucks uh he's talking about sven barchi again oh gosh there's a name there's a name and we'll we'll link to it in the description you have to scroll down very far because one thing
Starting point is 01:17:45 that article reminded me of is how long articles used to be remember when you had to sit down for an hour just to read 32 thoughts yeah or sorry 30 thoughts or 31 thoughts i remember it was at the time this article is just a monolith but if you scroll all the way down to when he's talking about john chica he goes through some of his greatest hits and you're like oh geez like how wasn't this guy fired long before he was any of those moves and I think this is a fair question to ask where any of those moves like well we're the coyotes and we have an internal cap and we have to make a dumb move because we have an internal cap maybe but then why are you trading the seventh overall pick for Derek step on that I don't know why are you selecting Barrett Hayton ahead of Quinn Hughes
Starting point is 01:18:30 and Evan Bouchard why are you doing this why are you doing that why are you doing that and there some good moves like one of the moves that's criticized in the article is going out and getting Nick Schmaltz as like by high good move now it didn't at the time and it didn't for a few years and now Nick Schmaltz is thriving one of the moves
Starting point is 01:18:49 that was like it was Max Domi for Alex Galchenyuk Domi immediately goes out 72 points in Montreal 72 points and he's their number one center and Galchenyuk was Galchenyuk okay Domi hasn't panned out long term I think we're all forgetting Galchenyuk was so much worse yeah I'm terrified of this reality
Starting point is 01:19:12 I'm open to the idea that Chayka's learned some things and he could do a good job and the Leafs could thrive but any optimism in him doing a good job in Toronto is not based in anything he's done It's not based in reality. So I wonder if this is well and truly the way the Leafs are going to go, and it sure seems that way. Like, as I told you last show, like, Matz would move here. That's what I'm hearing. Okay. And so if Matz, that was always the, you might not think that's a big deal,
Starting point is 01:21:17 but Matz wanting to live in Toronto again is kind of a major part of him being a VP of Hockey Operations, right? Like that, you know, so and uprooting his family and the kids are still, you know, pre pre high school and bringing mats into the fold. Is he good? I agree. I think standards and and all that stuff. And we could talk about the benefits of that. What I'm curious about, you know, because I believe that I think John's involved with his sister, Megan, and staff leads.
Starting point is 01:21:46 Right. So I'm curious about how that's progressed in terms of that company. and we know that they've got some pretty unbelievably in-depth stuff at that company, like many of these advanced stats companies do, how has his understanding of a game, understanding of prospects, or maybe he doesn't understand prospects and he hires somebody that does. You know what I mean? That's what you should do.
Starting point is 01:22:12 Don Waddell's always really good at that. They always say Don's not always the guy making the moves. He let Eric Tolsky do a lot of stuff for him. Why? because he was like well i hired the guy that's smarter than me and i'm gonna let him be a smart guy can you can you so imagine so can you imagine i look at i look at this and i go i would fundamentally love to know in the multiple job interviews they've had what chayka has presented to keith pelly and very likely the mlse board about here's how my here's how it went in arizona
Starting point is 01:22:44 there's some stuff like because i would have legitimate questions about that here's my understanding of where the team is now and what they could be and how did he get this over the line how has his growth personally because you do grow from 26 to 36 um uh how do you how to how has your understanding of this game changed and by the way let's just be straight it was always a mistake to put his 26 year old in charge of an nhl franchise yeah game set match and i think part of that is it it was what was john gonna do say no of course he's gonna say yes to that we all would but 26 yeah hell yeah dude i'm whatever and if this goes wrong okay at least i was the gm of an nhl franchise what have you done with your life like i get it right but i i think that i
Starting point is 01:23:31 would love to know what's the progression in the last 10 years what have you learned are you is it applicable here what did he tell keith pelly in his interviews the good answer is everything he's learned in the last five to ten years the bad answer is exactly what pelly wanted to hear i don't know what pelly wants to hear that's the thing that i have i don't think pelly knows what pelly wants to hear i have no i i do know that he gets um he is somebody that very much um uh get at least my this is my understanding is that he's very much charmed by the new thing whatever the new thing is so um like i'm not saying john walked in there and did an ai presentation like i have no idea but you know what i mean like it's there is something
Starting point is 01:24:16 about that's an executive of keith pelly standing they always have to be like yeah we're we're on this new thing and we're on this new thing and we're on this new thing and we're going to implement this new thing whether the new thing is actually going to work or not oh we were early on that new thing meanwhile like one of the most old school coaches in hockey just has him wrapped around his finger yeah i don't understand a single thing the toronto may police are doing and uh but you're open you're open to it i'm open to it oh listen i'm i'm going to enjoy it if this works uh yeah you're rooting for him yeah you're rooting for this to have to work real life is not the internet yeah i don't gotta be right about this to enjoy if they win and you're weird to think otherwise
Starting point is 01:25:09 like genuinely weird i'd love to interview all your co-workers you're exhausting but i i don't understand a single thing that they're freaking doing jesse don't do you do you feel the same way Steve does. I understand your skepticism with the resume portion of it, but I am open to the idea that he was hired in 2016, which was a decade ago. He got fired in 2020 or resigned in 2020, which is six years ago. And I think there's a lot of learning to be done in the six years since. And the analytics that he's building behind the scenes and with his stat lease company, I don't know what's involved there, but it seems like there's a lot of trust with NHL teams on that data. And if they want to go a data-driven guy, why not go with somebody who built a company that a lot of the NHL teams, the majority of NHL teams across the league trust?
Starting point is 01:26:06 So this is interesting because this is mentioned in the Botchford article from 2019. Chayka's on kind of an island because the hockey man establishment doesn't really like him. the a lot of the analytics establishment doesn't like him either okay um it's mentioned in there and i've asked around and it seems to remain true like i'm sure he's got friends and everything and obviously people pay for his services do you know why uh yeah they don't trust his stuff well at least from like the 2019 and which again is a long time ago um his numbers because they're not they are weren't publicly known you can't scrutinize them right so you can't be like yes this is good yes this is bad i understand this process here's what i do differently here's what
Starting point is 01:27:01 he does differently that is actually better than what i do they couldn't do any of that it's just this guy who showed up one day and got in and did a very mediocre job and and like again what you're describing sounds like a great candidate for some team to be like would you like to be our assistant gm give him the reins why what for based on what this guy he must have dazzled in the presentation might be the craziest interviewer in the history of humanity at 26 getting the coyotes job yeah yeah yeah i so yeah i i think that the idea that okay he's different than when he was when he's 26 and can do a better job in a front office i think that's that'll be fine like i think that's that's very true but i i think steve's right in that it is strange that
Starting point is 01:27:58 they're giving him this head honcho title and the guy above him is also somebody who's not experienced at all limited experience so keith pelly has no experience running a pro sports team except for the argos and he now he runs 10 teams and he's bringing in matt sundin who has no experience in an nhl front office and then matt sundin's bringing in john shaka who has very poor experience running one team and was not good at it and poor is the operative word because that defined the coyotes yes like poor in terms of money and performance yeah it is a troubling decision that they've made here and that's rogers and by the way and i have no faith in them and i don't like them no they're bad at what they do uh nick jesse could you be a little more clear
Starting point is 01:28:41 about that we didn't quite get that one so the nick schmaltz thing by the way it it sort of leaves out that he was traded for brennan perlini and dylan strome oh another late bloomer who bloomed arguably later and better nick schmaltz scored on that last game we were just talking about so like hey that worked out he's i guess i guess it's scoring playoff goals yeah hooray hooray that's pretty good listen i i i'm always open i i'm skeptical as well and i think here's what maple leaf sports and entertainment needs to understand keith pelly specifically now i've told you this i think it's we've been telling you this for a couple of years but now everybody else is reporting it so now people believe it uh rogers is going to combine the blue jays with this tony
Starting point is 01:29:26 staffieri said it on an earnings call a couple weeks ago tony staffieri being the ceo of rogers They're going to combine the Blue Jays with MLSC. I have been hearing for years that they're also going to combine not legacy media, but the Sportsnet brand in that organization. So they will be two sides of the same pant. So Rogers Communications will be the left side. It just does the telecom stuff. The right side will be the sports portfolio, which will be worth just as much as the communications portfolio. So you're going to have two companies worth roughly 20 to 25 billion dollars. And the sports thing does the sports thing. The telecom thing does the telecom thing because it's always been an awkward fit corporately to have a media operation and telecom because your Internet profitability and your cable profitability is so much higher than what media is.
Starting point is 01:30:21 media used to be that profitable, but it is, it's shrunk from what, you know, radio stations used to run like 60% margins. Now they're down to 30% and everybody's losing their minds. Right. Um, and sometimes in smaller markets, a lot less than that. And so it makes sense to split these off. It'll, it'll do good things for the stock price. They're, they're, you know, they're offering voluntary retirement, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. My point is, um, somebody's going to run this thing and right now it's going to be mark shapiro and you know for keith this is the move this is the most important decision he's making of his entire career and he's been had a very successful career and i'm very very curious to hear from him what he'll admit as to why he's
Starting point is 01:31:10 made it if he's if this is in fact where we're going he no matter how john shakish could be the best thing that happens in his franchise but at the end of the day right now in 2026 keith pelly is betting his future on a disgraced 32 36 year old executive that's an insane risk and i cannot believe the ceo of mls he is making it well we did ask them to be both fucking hire me then what maddie you're looking for a gig you want to be like what is this what is this day one what are you gonna do i'm turning 26 soon so i think i qualify yeah yeah you do yes there you go you could run the coyotes there you go yeah we asked them to be bold there's some construction going on outside here hey oh who wants a job what are we doing it's a terrifying it's a big risk and
Starting point is 01:32:06 it will be very interesting but here's the thing if matt's calls keith today and says i don't want to do it we're back to somebody else that's the other part that's weird why this is the part that i can't quite square so so so yes yes please say this because this is insane so elliot says if matt says yes then it's john if matt says no well then it could be is it is it scott white Scott White. I keep wanting to say Mitch White, but he was another Leaf. Mitch Love? Mitch Love.
Starting point is 01:32:38 Ah, and now he's a coach. Anyway, Scott White then would step in, maybe. And so what does that mean? What is the connection? What does that mean? What is the connection between Matt Sundin and John Chayka? And the only thing I can come up with this, and this is awfully thin, okay? So just bear with me on this one.
Starting point is 01:32:56 Go ahead. Max Domi played for John Chayka. And Ty and Matt's our best friends. that's the only thing i can think of here the only thing i'll say this about you guys complaining about the reports that's not on for us to know that's they're doing their due diligence for yeah it's not on us to know through the leaks through the media what exactly is supposed to happen if this happens these are just the information the nuggets we have yeah reporting yeah like they're doing their own thing right now i'm just i'm doing my role which is if they're
Starting point is 01:33:26 throwing these things out there canary in a coal mine sort of shit okay this canary is dying because i need to tell you this sucks well this plan stinks shit again i'm open i'm always rooting for the leafs so i will be rooting for them to make smart choices i'll be the first one to to to tell you that if john chica starts making smart moves if he gets hired here rah rah rah john chica i'll get my pom-poms out sure i'll get my chica i'll shake my chica pom-poms okay i'll get a 69 chica jersey i don't give a shit i'll do it uh and i'll get a 420 just for fun i just think it's not up to rogers to hand us a piece of paper and be like hey this is our interview process this is what we're thinking and i agree but we're reacting to the nuggets here so but isn't that
Starting point is 01:34:09 bizarre that it's like well if if it's john if it's matt's but if it's not matt's then it's not john might not be that and the information is being released on a rogers platform that's that's why i believe it that's why i so wholeheartedly believe it because it would be easy if the information was wrong to just be like elliot yeah oh anyway we'll leave it there we'll see what happens it sounds like we're closing in on a decision this week so uh i'm sure it'll be a nice five o'clock news dump uh i'm sure okay wait wait sdpn published okay go now if you had to make a bet on if this happens or not are you willing to say yes or no which side are you on the coin i'm betting yes and i'm betting a hard yes because it's all i've been
Starting point is 01:34:57 hearing for weeks yeah and it's not i'm talking about people that i talk to not just people that are in the media who are also clearly hearing the same things i'm betting no because of delusional optimism i'd say i think it's i think it's yeah yeah i think it's a yeah yeah all right well we'll see what happens but you know at one point it was sunny meta and that was like two weeks ago what could have been jesse blake remember that whatever happened to neil glasberg whatever happened to all that don't know hey he might be spearheading this you don't know i think he was on Artemis. They forgot him at the moon.
Starting point is 01:35:33 Hey, we'll be back Friday. Maybe we'll have some news. Anyway, some eliminations. At M-A-P-L-E-L-E-A-F-S. Send them their resume or your resume because they're looking
Starting point is 01:35:47 for anyone. And at Jesse Blake.
