I think we need to give a big shout out to forward thinkers
like the Toronto Maple Leafs for starting their best goaltender twice.
It's crazy.
And the Habs did it with a goalie who prior to the series
had not played in a month.
No one bats an eye.

Carey Price is playing of course
well of course he's playing two halves
of the back-to-back he's been really good what
you haven't seen Jack
when you spent how
much money on Jake Allen to be your backup too

that was that in hindsight
that looks like to be a great deal
because they got him for the regular
season that's what it was kind of for just
if Carey Price goes down we need
jake allen and we need a legit star to get us into the playoffs and they had jake allen for that
month and it was awesome and then underrated underrated part of all that jesse is they signed
him to an extension after getting him for not very much money and the extension was for like
i think it's like 60 of what he currently makes that's awesome he's good he's gonna go down from
like four something to two something that is uh that's a tidy little bit of business there folks
that's right i can tell you the exact number here jake allen this year made 4.35 next year
and the year after he'll make 2.875 875 so ever so slightly more than i thought that's still
quite good yeah um the leafs beat the haves for nothing and despite what you guys are saying about
the jake allen trade hashtag fire bergevin was trending or canada wide this morning no yes really
There was a, uh, uh, I've several people reached out to me.
I haven't been able to get ahold of it, but there was a, apparently just a monstrous rant
on TSN, uh, nine or six 90 in Montreal this morning.
Or is it nine 60?
I can never, I never get it right.

Our boy Connor McKenna's there, but, uh, you know, it's, it's a, uh, it's, it's one of
those where like people are upset.
They're very upset.
Are you upset that the, the weaker team lost and that the better team is winning?
well they're upset they're the weaker team um okay and like okay there's a little too much of
this going on where habs fans are talking about the series like it's over and then the leafs fans
love also talking about the series like it's over game five let's all chill let's all you shut your
face you shut your face it's over beforehand it was leafs and six they still got another game to
lose i said least in five oh did you i said i did and then i saw them lose the first game and i
went ah well it's still possible and look at this it's still possible um it is quite the thing um
i don't know what to make of the montreal canadians as a team um you know what i forgot
you know what someone brought up in the chat yesterday on sportsnet's youtube channel every
game of the leafs hab series the sportsnet youtube channel check us out around game time
uh jonathan druin is not in this series that's true i completely forgot about that because i
was thinking about guys who are dynamic players they can create dynamic offense and uh let me go
back to something we talked about last episode yeah no adam's right uh they should have played
cole caulfield from game one that was dumb that was oh but you talk about guys who can create
offense on their own right like the habs score a lot of goals by committee by banging and crashing
by working hard they have so few guys who can generate it on their own cole caulfield can do it
nick suzuki next yeah yeah yeah yeah nick suzuki can do it and he'll do it better in the future
um and drew it i think falls into that category i know he had a very very very difficult time
doing it this year he needs a finisher he needs a finisher but he can create and i just feel like
that's a big void on the team i i don't know how they improve their team in a hurry well i think i
think maybe going after jack eichel might help uh you know i mean boy do they got to solve that
problem eh they do need a top line center they're like philip dino is a great center
but the habs are using him like how many how many centers in the league are both a number one center
and a shutdown center i don't think i've seen that since mike pecca was the top centerman for
the sabers when hashik was their goalie and was and then like you know their top scorer had 60
points and it was miroslav shatan it's it's like bergeron taves when he's healthy ryan o'reilly
like this is the problem the habs are using philip to know like he's ryan o'reilly and there's nothing
than quite behind him.
Kotkaniemi will be,
but he's not.
And he's been
Suzuki will be
about like Kotkaniemi.
Yeah, that's
that's your future, right?
It's it's the three
down the middle.
And I guess like
you need to upgrade
on on to know.
But the two and three
are set.
If it's Kotkaniemi
and Suzuki
like that,
I think Suzuki
will be a number
one center one day.

And like then
there's a one two punch.
But like how long
you waiting for that to mature into what it's supposed to be.
And how old is Carey Price when that hits its peak?
This is the thing.
And Shea Weber and Jeff Petrie.
You know, it just feels like their offense and where they're at
does not match their defense and their goaltending and where that's at.
There's not enough prime guys up front.
You know what I mean?
All those defenders, they're in the back half of prime.
I think you probably move prime up a few years for defense.
same thing for goaltending um it's just that's that's the goal with the salary cap era is to
have the right players hit their prime at the right time you gotta be a magician yeah and i
think i think what we saw last night was an automatic leafs win and this is something as
leaf fans we don't see often just one of those where it was just there as soon as nylander
scored by the way his fourth goal in four games incredible um you know as as soon as nylander
scores the Leafs sort of open up the game opens up and it opens up in their favor and Montreal
you know there are some opportunities I think there was a post at one point as well but they're
never really Gallagher but there was never really that that moment where you're like this game could
go either way once the Nylander goal went in it was sort of I think it it just became this it's
almost like when you roll a ball down a hill it starts to pick up speed faster and faster and
faster and by the third period it was you know they're pulling kerry price with five minutes to
go and i know and god bless chris cuthbert because one of my favorite calls that he made steve you
would have missed this i did when hyman when hyman shot the puck and missed the net on the empty net
chris cuthbert's like oh you gotta wonder if that'll come back to haunt him and i'm like he's
trying to make something out of nothing i wondered the same thing he's trying to make something out
of this game that was completely tipped in one team's favor um also chris cuthbert was trending
and you know he's doing a great job because he was trending because both fan bases were saying
he was biased towards their fan base it was unbelievable so shout out chris cuthbert you
killed it on the broadcast if you are watching the bruins feed and you're a team that is not
the bruins jack edwards is biased if you are listening to the leafs radio broadcast and you're
not a leafs fan and your team is playing the leafs joe bowen is biased by design it's on purpose
chris cuthbert gets a lot of shit for being biased along with every other you know national
announcer i can pretty much guarantee you he's about as neutral as they come well and and like
his counterpart craig simpson who is like mostly a lifelong oiler yeah and kyle bukaskis who
regularly covers the sins i mean yeah well that's a toronto crew they're trying there were people
that were like oh the intermission i i know that there was a tsn personality uh uh eric on sports
law who said oh man the toronto uh you could really tell the toronto bias in the in the
intermission and i think he was referring to you know what they had talked about and somebody i
think rightly reached out and said well what in montreal are they going to talk about what do you
want them to talk about there was nothing there was nothing montreal that was notable they got
shut out man yeah like there's nothing to talk about and that's that's the funny part right so
i think i think at the end of the day you're always going to feel like the announcer's against
you remember that they're doing a job and also it's pretty fucking lazy to call them biased
these do you think these guys care that much you know like really i i've led a very blessed life
i'm blessed to be where i am in in my career but part of me is like i wish i didn't start so young
because i i did a lot of talking smack and thinking i knew a lot about the industry and
talking crap about cbc people and sportsnet people and tsn people and now that i'm involved
i see that and i'm like shut up yeah if you have no idea how this works yeah and that's okay you
have no idea it's you do know how this works but you're just for the other company well yeah oh
when when another and yeah or you ought to know how this works maybe not you do but you ought to
when i thought we jesse and i were confused by what you said because the context of that is you
mean other media personalities calling that yeah you're talking we're we thought you're talking
about like being fans being a fan oh go fill your boots no deuce if you're a fan go for it yeah go
for it go for it go for i don't know if it's the best idea when you're young and trying to get into
the business but i mean like i said like i said uh running head start a lot of people i was like
this guy's a dumbass who later went on to become a co-worker so i just yeah watch your mouth that's
all that's all i'm saying hey learn from my mistakes rather than yours it's better that way

on this team is ruining my life but i love them how i became a professional hockey fan by steve

neil andrew scores his fourth goal of the series ties the montreal canadians in terms of goals
meaning that neil andrew has as many goals as the montreal canadians do this series through forking
jason spezza scores his second of the series and then sets up thornton and then you have
gauch looking insane and i kept saying i'm gonna highlight this kept saying you can't keep him out
of the lineup good player three points last night including the empty netter that had to sting i
think i think especially i think the reason the montreal media are so mad today is their former
third overall pick is is a guy that and i listen i know how it went for gauch in montreal it went
well and then it didn't go well and then it didn't go well in pittsburgh and it didn't go well in
arizona it didn't go well in ottawa and it didn't go well in carolina minnesota minnesota carolina
he never got to suit up he had a lot of didn't go else right and this was his last it better go well
i here's where the frustration comes you don't look at that and say the hab screwed up
because they directly went from galchenyuk to domi his best seasons sold high uh got josh
anderson that's fair you don't feel bad about that but you might look take a look at the player
that galchenyuk is um and his you know commitment um to just both both sides of the puck and
feistiness and the ability to the willingness to take on a role that maybe he wasn't used to
or maybe he wasn't willing to before and you look at that and you go why couldn't you have done that
here i think michelle terrian would be the reason he couldn't have done that there i think i mean
the montreal organization for employing that coach for that long some guys have egos for sure but i
think you know they talk about the different coaching styles you know you gotta you know uh
we we don't like we don't like patch already and we don't like suban and we don't like galchenyuk
it no listen everyone good doesn't have the right attitude yeah are you sure that's the issue here
are you not like developing these guys properly is there not the right atmosphere the right culture
maybe they're just not exactly the way you were when you were coming up in the nhl mark bergevin
yeah and i'm not in that and i'm not talking about this iteration of the montreal canadians
because all the guys i just mentioned have been gone for several years but man i love i love
chucky i with a fully healthy roster i have no idea i have no idea what you do the one the one
thing that is definitely going to help keep galchenyuk in the lineup um it was later in the
game well and as evidenced by the fact that he got an empty net goal but it was later in the game
and they got a line of nylander kerfoot and galchenyuk out there defending a lead and the
habs have an empty net they're defending the lead against an extra attacker neil and playing defense
that does not happen last year that doesn't happen in any year before this they move heaven and earth
babcock or keith they move heaven and earth to get neilander the hell off the ice kerfoot's out
there and galchenyuk is certainly not like there's there's a reason he seems to only play first or
second line left wing i'm also pretty sure kerfoot didn't kill penalties until he became a leaf
and that's only been this season and he's been really good i don't know if he did in colorado
but i don't think he did in his brief tenure under babcock he also got suspended and suffered
a broken face there was a lot of heads yeah there was a lot he didn't have a smooth start
it's interesting that it took two three injuries to get galchenyuk in the lineup like that's the
only reason we're seeing him play right now and he's been unbelievable you know so i wonder like
like you said a healthy lineup i don't know if he cracks it well i think that that you you got
to look at someone else coming out and i i i know that makes it now oh well yeah well obviously
and listen bless the guy he he's great depth to have he's great in case of
emergency break open glass but the playoffs boy they start in a hurry you know they start in a
hurry and like it was amazing to see adam brooks get in the lineup well that was going to be the
next guy i brought up how do you keep him out of the lineup when spets and thornton work so well
dude here's the great thing they have legitimately five full lines of players i'd be completely
comfortable with maybe even six if they had to throw nick patan in the lineup does anyone get
nervous no dennis maugen still there isn't he yeah no we haven't seen him this season he had
a great season in switzerland um let's hey everyone don't write off the mason marchman
trade just yet that doesn't it okay mason marchman would not be on this team you know mason marchman
though that trade would have been a daily discussion with this fan base in years past
yes but they're so good and they're so deep that we don't really care we don't really care and and
like i said in the lfr today would i have taken rasmus sandin out of the lineup no but if what
makes your team sink or swim
is swapping Sandin
for Dermott, you are never going to
win the cup anyway. You aren't even
going to win a series. If that
roster decision
ruins your team,
you're done.
And that's just not the case.
We thought they had depth
last year. They actually have depth
this year.
And if Foligno is healthy,
we don't see Gouch.
Also, if this is the regular season,
next like next season uh robertson's probably in there yes no he might be an option later on
this is this is a problem that's like great to have awesome wicked problem give me this problem
this is it oh it's delicious now i i do want to say travis durman i know they threw him in there
to keep him engaged which you know i was like okay uh but on the road too he looked really good
looked really good there was yes this is what we wanted for this is this is the travis durman we
were all hoping for there was a moment um where perry installed they ended up sort of getting
behind both him and bogosian bogosian i thought did a good job of limiting stall as much as he
could but dermot was aggressive at perry and really only left him with one option and that's
to make sort of an awkward pass and it if if you watch the replay it's almost identical to what
the situation riley had with nick suzuki but travis dermot learned from that and was far more
aggressive right it's man a an injury one injury on the Leafs defense of any player over the past
few years they're done don't even bother playing the rest of the games this year they're they're
fine they're fine totally fine it's I have not I've never slept this peacefully during the Stanley
They've got playoffs.
It's crazy how good the Leafs defense has become
when they take out Barry and CeCe
and you add Brody and Bogosian
and then a healthier Dermott and Sandin.
And all of a sudden, this is a really, really solid defense.
And Muzzin can actually play the series.
I don't remember the last time the defense was this good in Toronto.
It's never been.
It's never been while we've been alive.
It's a team thing as well.
The forwards have this new commitment.
they're making it easier on the defense i was watching um uh i think it was doug mclean on
line movement with nick kiprios and he's like he was talking about the montreal canadians and
their complete inability to generate offense and he's right but he's like is the leafs defense like
so big and bruising that you can't get through them and that's that's not the issue it's breaking
the line is so difficult they've always got two guys back and they've always got one of the
fastest group of forwards in the nhl barreling down on you from the other end and they just
smother you are you saying line movement is the issue way you see because hey hey hey there you
go doug that's who is that anyway he doesn't know hockey do you know he drafted jared f that one
time and also rick nash did you know that he drafted rick nash i do hope one day we get
doug mclean on this show i that we make fun but this doug mclean is well known uh around the sports
and always drafting rick nash but yeah but also being probably the best guy to work with ever
like everybody loved everybody loved doug mclean to a person no one has ever said anything bad
about that man so we'd love to have him on the show one day we do have to tease him about that
though because i listened to doug mclean for 15 years talk about how he drafted rick nash and
nick sheredev so i mean listen we all have our thing mine as i worked at the zoo his is he
drafted rick nash first overall i know which one i would have rather done people like whoa how do
you fuck that up uh we've seen some pretty bad top three picks before so i think nhl's history
says here's how here's a long list of here's how ask the oilers about 2012 i think it was 2012 right
yes so you talk about yak yakupov oh baby also i don't know if you guys saw this or not but
bill burr tweeted about the leafs what did he say the first time he's done that and he's a big hockey
guy he said things are getting interesting in a certain canadian city that this bruins fan does
not want to jinx so if i'm not mistaken he's a bruins fan who actually likes the leafs yes like
The Leafs are like his second team.
So a sick, disgusting part of me wants it.
With Bruins and Leafs in the finals?

can never meet in the Stanley Cup finals again.

wouldn't it be great if if when the california teams are monsters to play against we could have
an la san jose final i think you need conferences i think you need conferences i think you do but
i don't think there's any reason why you can't just jumble it up after the second round is there
any reason yeah but like real reason basketball is not like ah you know we can't have the knicks
versus the the nets or the miami heats or the celtics or it's that's just how it works man
yeah and then you pull you play out to the final so then you have a conference champion
you know like that's what the semi-finals is the conference champion ran yeah and you get a trophy
for that yeah in the nba they're not afraid of it what is it it's not the lester b no it's the
prince wales trophy something whatever the eastern conference trophy champion is i think it's wales
something i think it's the prince of wales i don't know what the other one is clarence campbell
clarence campbell yes clarence s campbell i think well and and here's where it's dead in the water
the new york yankees cannot play the boston red talks in the world series you know what i mean
it's every sport i know just i know listen i get it adam i get it it'd be fun all right um by the
way i just want to say this again based on what we've seen in game three and game four and i and
this is just a continuation of my rant from last episode thank you steve for acknowledging the
cole caulfield thing um dominic ducharme is cannot be the head coach of the montreal canadians next
year cannot this cannot cannot cannot happen what combination of the montreal canadians
would beat the leafs it's not really about that you had a chance you could have said that about
the jets too you'd be like what combination of the jets are going to beat the oilers look what
happen it can't happen and and you had you had a one game edge on the leafs already now yes we
understand what happened to Tavares and you can't plan for that however you're starting out your
first game and you're not playing your best players to me that is inexcusable like we're
debating whether or not Gauch could be in the lineup with Foligno and Tavares were healthy
they're like they're actively keeping players who are very good off their roster you can't tell me
that that they made the right roster decisions even in game one well if they had the chance in
game two to really put their foot on the Leafs neck they know the Leafs are jittery in the
playoffs they are the Leafs are jittery in the playoffs you had the chance to really like you
imagine that what kind of conversations are we having on Monday of this week if Montreal had
gone up to nothing which is entirely plausible it would have been bad bad it would have been bad
And you can see a little bit of playoff inexperience there.
I don't know Dominic Ducharme's coaching record.
But it's 10-13 and something.
It's not good.

No, like, I mean, how often he's been in the playoffs
or if he's ever been a head coach in the playoffs.
I don't know if he's ever been a head coach.
Right.
So he didn't go with the tried and true strategy.
In game two, they were heavily penalized and lost.
and then in game three and four they basically backed off of being bullies which is ridiculous
what you're supposed to do is take a bunch of penalties in game two complain about it and then
the penalties aren't there in game three but you do the exact same shit that's that's what i've
learned over the past few years it's what the blues did to the bruins it's what the bruins do
to everybody it's it's what the hurricanes just did to the predators they they had the penalty
The power plays were 7-3 in favor of the Preds in back-to-back games.
Rod Brindamore coughed up some money by complaining about it.
Guess what?
Next game, it was 4-2, I think.
They still ended up losing.
Listen, there was a couple even-up calls last night.

Did you guys see the article Dom Luchesian wrote in The Athletic
about make-up calls in the playoffs?
He wrote specifically.

he wrote it specifically about mcdavid because he he drew zero penalties in those four games
that's an embarrassment and he's like how was how was that possible so he like ran down all
the shifts and just the uh all of the infractions that actually took place and that should have been
called i think and jeff fayette said he was ridden like a jet ski yeah like it was a little
ridiculous and he made he made the point which is the overall thing was that when you when the
refs ref this way all you're doing is benefiting the defense you're discouraging offense and it
seems like all the every other game changes the style of play towards generating more offense
so the nba has gone this way where you can't touch anybody and everything's a foul and it generates
more offense and then the three-point line and then the nfl has gone the way where the quarterback
is so protected that you can't touch them anymore and it generates more offense and the nhl during
their highest point of the season goes this way where the defense is allowed to do anything to
these players and then there it limits the offense because it's like oh it's on the offensive player
to go deal with that and play this new game because you have the puck so anybody can do
anything to you and i thought it was a very good point i i think you're right for the wrong reasons
i don't think it i don't think the refs putting the whistles away rewards defense it rewards
cheating.
It rewards breaking the rules.
You're not allowed to hold Connor
McDavid. You're not allowed to hook Connor McDavid. You're not
allowed to trip Connor McDavid. You're not allowed to elbow
drop Connor McDavid. You're not allowed to throw
Connor McDavid. You're not allowed to do these

I saw were ridiculous. If you're on defense, you can't.

zero drawn penalties by connor mcdavid that's ridiculous and you know someone right now is well

on the it's caught in a game zero and four it's not good enough there's one instance where he was

chris verstig had a really interesting hit on sportsnet radio talking about
the bench rod hit on tavaris and it was more of a just an overall symptom of something that's
um it happens too often it's guys leading with their knee yeah i still don't think the
hit was nefarious but it's and i don't think dylan de mello was like i'm gonna friggin i'm
gonna knee conor mcdavid guys know that they can't knee they know they're gonna get kicked
out of the game they know it's going to go bad for them um but i wonder if that's the sort of
thing that goes the way of the can opener does that make sense like with brian mccabe i wonder
if it goes the way of the can opener guys stop throwing it they just crack down well they
wouldn't have stopped the the can opener if they weren't penalized for it right right um so anyway
we'll see what happens with the leafs and habs tomorrow night thursday night uh it could be the
Leafs uh first second round appearance since 2004 I was in grade 10 with Steven Jesse how old were
you and what were you doing 2004 uh 12 so 2004 I think that would have been my first year uh no I
wouldn't have been in high school because you guys were in high school so you're in grade seven

you're what you're the north division representative in the third round of the playoffs
then you're the north division champs yeah i'm gonna have a hard time wearing that shirt
until until they get through their next opponent and to get through the next opponent they got to

not know we were going to do every game when i agreed to do the championship i did not know we
were going to stream every game on the we don't have much time for it but before yester or monday
show i asked you um because you were saying on the stream that you like doing this more than
uh watching the game regularly because you watch more of the game did you want to talk about that
yeah oh sure so well i'm far happier and far less stressed out because i'm not reading twitter
true i've made friends off of twitter i've made money off of twitter i i've i've advanced my
career off of twitter but boy sometimes is it bad for you and i have just it's been such a
much more relaxing experience watching with no twitter um it's too much yes i know there's the
chat um but like here i'll let you on a little secret um i don't see the chat i get sent the
questions because it'd be impossible to watch the game while like we had as many as 18 000 people
and how what percent of them are commenting and what percent of them are commenting every 20
seconds i can never read that uh it's just better and i'm having to pay really close attention
because i can't rely on the commentators because i can't hear them i have no game sound no nothing
so when cory perry stopped matthew's empty net attempt in midair i would have heard the stick
but i didn't so i was just sitting there like did matthew's there's did he just miss the net and
they show the replay so sometimes you get you get double uh you know double your money whatever
because i'm like what the hell happened there and you know what the hell happened there and
then they show the replay and i go no way holy cow and and we were talking after the game actually
one of the producers is like it's amazing how often you're like is that what this was and then
they go and yes that's exactly what that was like on the broadcast was that a slash that was a slash
and he's going to the box um it's i'm really enjoying it i'm gonna miss it in round two
it doesn't sound like we're doing it in round two but it's been such a success well yeah why
don't we just do it well then it would just be a watch along i guess we could part part of the the
what's so good about it is uh you get to watch the game beside me yeah we can't right and yeah
we can't do that yeah do that so so that's tough um it's weird that the really successful thing
you're doing wouldn't be continued but anyway well they're hoping but i can't comment that's

jets and oilers jets win a double over time over time and i think these two tweets say it all okay
number one comes from dan 10900 uh don't ask me why but he's a stats guy and he took money
moneypuck.com's model game one and they have a deserve to win-o-meter which i love this thing
okay so no game one the deserve to win-o-meter edmonton 18 or sorry sorry 18 81 jets 19 game two
59 to 40.6 percent game three edmonton 70 or uh jets 30 and then game four 72.8 for the oilers
and about 27 for the jets um this series wasn't close in so many ways and yet the edmonton oilers
and ken holland just did his press conference as we started recording so i've got a couple quotes
from that to get to which i think you're going to laugh at uh because i'm a little kid i i said
on twitter i was excited for where the oilers could go or are going i think steve you said it
better you're excited about where they could go but i'm a little concerned they aren't going

have been some guy off camera giving him shit like who knows you don't know but part of me saw that

they got to get some help.

for certain guys even though he was given that burden of leadership he had other guys around him
to help him and connor mcdavid has to lead this team with his personality and with 105 points in
56 games it's too much they're expecting of this guy and i don't know how anyone claps back at him
it like if he was to bark bark at your team or if he was to tear a strip off your team verbally
who's speaking up who's pulling him aside and going listen man that's enough listen man that's
not how you do it listen man all talk to them and again we're not in the oilers locker room we don't
know but he needs someone who can be a voice he needs someone he needs someone he's got to be
i think he's a quiet leader i don't think he's rah-rah guy and sometimes it just feels like he's
a little bit on an island well and there were times when you watch the leafs um in their
development too like pre this year last year did that team look like they were having any fun
last year the whole year not a likable group not a fun group to watch maybe barring that first 20
games that keith was the head coach and then they kind of flunked out of the play-in round
kind of a fart the whole team the whole season was and the season before that with babs you could
tell body language was there not a fun place to play you know the players were starting to just
lose their patience with the guy um and i am my season first season without marlo yeah good
question yeah and that's the thing you need some guys who are maybe potentially older contributors
who can kind of um maybe manage that load a little bit like you look at what thornton simmons
spezza have brought to toronto in the last couple of years there's been a marked difference in how
these guys have played and how much fun they seem to be having and a little less pressure on the
Marners and the Matthews of the world to, to lead. I think you're absolutely right on that, Steve.
And it's funny, you know, I said the last, uh, the last podcast about Edmonton having a real
opportunity here to make a change. They've got a real opportunity this off season to make changes
and people were like, well, if you resign, you have to resign this guy and this guy and this guy
and Nuge, uh, all that money's gone. Well, you're not resigning Nuge. Nuge should not be back.
you know he's a contributor but he's not a six million dollar contributor and you need to go out
and find somebody else do you think ryan nugent hopkins is assisting conor mcdavid in the leadership
burden cat uh category doubtful i don't know well if he was it's not enough and so maybe you just
don't resign some of these people maybe you make a change and i i had some people in my dms oilers
fans saying well you can't make changes through free agency we all know how that worked for the
by the way it did work before the salary cap so go to hell uh but the but but the reality of that
situation is you can't wait around and draft your way into this the oilers have given themselves
no opportunity zero opportunity to do that now they could have done it when connor mcdavid was
20 21 22 you know guys that are three or four years behind it like an ethan bear like caleb
jones those guys are looking good but the window to draft you gotta draft well always but the
window to draft a core around conor mcdavid has closed because if you wait another four or five
years when those players are truly at their best conor mcdavid's gonna be 30 so you gotta change
it now you gotta do it now and you gotta spend some money on you and when you buy free agents
you spend too much money and when you're unfortunately with edmonton they have to pay
even more we've seen that this is why i think it's important that the player the player slash
players who come in and they take on that burden of leadership i think it's important they be good
and they be key contributors so i look at milan lucci's first year in edmonton
right and listen we we know cam talbot had an absolutely unbelievable year um you know we can't
We can't be taking what is very clearly goaltending and then lumping it on
Luchich who had 50 points.
You know what I mean?
So I know a large part of their success was goaltending that year,
but Luchich comes in 23 goals,
50 points in 82 games.
And then it all crumbles for him crumbles to the point where he was willing
to,

trade me to your most bitter rival.

so i can shake this off what once he stopped being a key contributor for them it all fell apart now
it coincided with the goaltending as well but they got to get guys who can be a voice they got to get
guys who can be a voice in the room and on the bench i want to i want to read a couple quotes

after him about um about the contracts and that sort of thing i believe uh and he said you know
like people say shirely signed this contract shirely signed that people sign bad contracts it
happens so here's the thing with edmonton fans they don't want to hear that right now
they don't want to hear that the other thing edmonton oiler fans i don't think want to hear is
we got beat by a real team winnipeg is an established program with really good players
and really good depth we're going to try to grow into one of those really good hockey programs
ken holland wants the oilers to become the jets
come on so i don't think the jets would if you were talking jets against golden knights from
three years ago you got me i'm in but i don't think the jets think that they want to be the
jets right now like they're happy with where they've come but if you think winnipeg hockey
fans have not been extremely frustrated with this team all year because the talent that they had on
defense has kind of dissipated i think there's a you know i think they're one of the fan bases
that's had the most fun in these playoffs because they had the lowest expectations bingo that's a

mcdavis cara mcdavid for very different reasons dry sidle for very different reasons yamamoto
is uh is a pain in the ass from the from this season series um and i think the way they get
out of some of their cap trouble is they're going to go young and they do have some prospects coming
up but i go back to the leadership thing i was saying that's going to be a problem

win last night and the canes are a good team and i think here's the thing with the canes what's so
fucking frustrating is they are probably to me anyway one of the most complete teams we've seen
in this era i think it's like like tampa bay is the most complete team we've ever seen in this era
like of of the salary cap here i think the tampa bay lightning are the most complete team that
doesn't guarantee you a win but boy pretty tough like you could have a guy that wins the heart
trophy guy that wins the rocket the guy that wins the norris a guy that wins the vesna like it's
pretty tough to compete with that carolina's right there they're right there they do have this element
of them where i'm like just do it yes looking like you're gonna do it and do it they they do
drive you nuts they're another youngish team we we think about them as older than they are too i
I don't think it's a lack of leadership, though.
I think it's just getting over that hump.
I also think we should, if we can do 30 seconds on Martin Nietzsche,
that'd be nice.
He's 22, had a two-goal game.
He sits in the Matthew spot on the power play at the left top of the circle,

and his name is Martin Nietzsche and nobody talks about him across the league, like there's

possibility of claude geroux being a fit with the senators the flyers superstar's name is suddenly

they are basically um charlie o'connor who is the flyers beat reporter via athletics said it's
difficult to see for me to see the Flyers trading Giroux this offseason there are definitely sections
of the fan base who want the front office to embark on a full-scale rebuild I don't get the
sense that which that's what Chuck Fletcher is planning to do um but he's still a very good
player still the team's captain is and I don't mean to bring this up as Claude Giroux specifically
but is Ottawa a really good place for guys who maybe do need a change of scenery I'm not no I'm

because the modified no trade clause in the last year of his contract stipulates that he can only
be traded to five teams. So as soon as free agency, which is July 28th this year, hits,
if that's the date we're working with anyway, Johnny Goudreau basically says to the Flames,
re-sign me or trade me at well below market value to the team I want to go to.
That's basically what happens. So it's going to be interesting to see Calgary, if they're keeping
Brad Trilliving, and Steve, you mentioned this last episode, it's like the bar for general
managers in Canada is relatively low because Trilliving has been there for a long time
and we haven't seen a whole lot of success in Calgary. If they are keeping Goudreau,
the time to trade him would be now the time to sign him would be now what do you think they're
more likely to do because they do need to make changes in calgary trade i uh you know i'm you

playoffs at that point yeah he said you know just lost three one if the leafs had if the
leafs had beaten boston he said there was a pretty clear path to the western or eastern
conference finals that's something you said i remember because they were they had played the
rangers really well and that too they would have played in the second round and they also
the penguins usually got the better of them but they really gave them shit they played a lot of
close games they would have gotten murdered by the black hawks murdered but it would have been fun
yeah so yeah eight years um it's crazy that it's gone by this fast too eight years
couldn't imagine eight years back then this is when steve and i had time to go out
after the podcast and get drunk during the middle of the week drunk during you get drunk on the
