Sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
TaskRabbit comes in and I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor
to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows.
And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window, you can do that yourself.
And I'm like, well, hang on a second.
What if I don't want to?
I don't have the stuff because you got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing.
The chemicals, you got to have the right chemicals.
see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and i employed a tasker here's the thing task
rabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly home repairs lawn maintenance

been assembled 700 000 home repairs 1.5 million moves and counting go ahead and get ahead of your

the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go back from draft weekend lots happening um we met uh there was a man who went viral there
he was a leaf fan he had a clipboard his name is josh also referred to online as clipboard guy he
will be joining the show thrilled to have josh on he just seems like a genuine dude like a great
person so we're excited to have him on also before we really get into it i think it's worth
mentioning that today is maddie's second last show at sdpn and maddie you've got a big announcement
this is you're you're uh you're leaving us but you're not just leaving us you're leaving all of
us yeah i am moving to london england um on a youth mobility visa for about two to three years
um living in toronto has been wonderful and this is just something in my life though that i've
always wanted to do I went to London for the first time when I was 16 I just felt it in my gut that
I wanted to be there one day just for like a year at least or something and uh but yeah all that to
say though I it has been genuinely such an honor working for the three of you these guys are the
most wonderful kindest people you will ever meet um like both professionally and personally speaking
They've helped me grow so much as a person. And Adam, I met when I was 21 years old and turning
out a radio station. Didn't really know what I was about to get myself into. And I kept getting
extended in this internship and didn't end up working out. But me and Adam became really strong
co-workers and we loved working with each other. And when this network was expanding, he asked me
if I want to be a switcher. And he was like, listen, we're kind of figuring things out still
right now but we need a camera switcher and you know i trust you with everything and i trusted
adam and i didn't know exactly what i wanted to do for a long time i was a bit lost and then
almost four years later um here you are this has been wonderful and um you know i was at a point
to where i didn't know if i wanted to work in sports and and genuinely the show has made me
fall in love with sports again um and ice hockey in general and and steve i mean i used to watch
steve when i was a little girl i mentioned that twice oh there's another old joke later in the
show that we had a treat um for steve but all jokes aside steve i loved your content growing
up you were one of the first people in my life and i mean and at that time like it was more of
a parasocial thing but as a angry leafs fan because my first leafs game ever was against
the boston bruins and 2012 i believe they lost eight nothing my first ever leafs game oh um and
steve remembers that game and i remember watching a video that steve reviewed after and i was like
this guy's awesome and then who knew years and years later we'd be four years working together
and it's been so so fun and special and uh jesse i oh jesse's my bestie i'm gonna lose my best
like they hang out to you so you gotta explain how much time you guys spend together you guys
spend a lot of time me and jesse so the thing is like we do the show and then after the show
it's just me and jesse that stay behind and we do our editing and jesse edits the show and i
edit the clips and we're side by side in our little office and sometimes we'll play
little lo-fi backgrounds and we'll pick different ones and we'll or we'll watch like
some soccer game happening or something i'll put on golf i'm going golf and uh me and jesse
golf together sometimes in the summer too but jesse is just the most wonderful person and i
didn't know who jesse was until i started this job and now he's just like he's made me grown so much
in my career and he is such a talented person and he really is like one of the main engines
behind this ship that i had no idea how um just incredible of like a co-worker i would have and
how like hard it would be to lose after a bit i mean we're not gonna we'll be in touch obviously
but you know it's it's different you don't get to see each other every day and um but uh yeah and
And he's just made me such a better editor and he's supported me so much throughout my career.
I feel like I have two older brothers and Adam always teases me.
I got that little sister energy.
Yeah, she knows how to put up with that.
And it feels like I'm working with some brothers every day as much as they're also my co-workers.
So it's been so, so special.
I love the three of you so much.
And thank you for everything.
Now, Maddie will be here for free agency.
First off, the words that you've given to all of us.
we appreciate you reading the script word for word um but beyond that ran a bit long yeah yeah
we're gonna tighten it a little bit in the middle there but i really probably should have been at
the desk but that's that's fine you also should have said steve old anyway um but i think she
could have said like any age she said little girl oh no little girl but maddie we're gonna miss you
so much and and obviously um you're gonna be around for free agency so free agency will be
your last day and that's crazy it's like the busiest day of the year um well this is the
busiest time for you guys and and they've they've known about this for for a little bit um but i
didn't want to like leave you guys at the at the busiest time because it's also such a fun time for
me too like the the office is so exciting yeah all the trades that break out and everything
it's such a fun time and to be here so and very quickly you're going to the you're going to uk
you're going to london yeah where what are you going to do what are people are going to want
to know what you're doing um i haven't got a job yet i've definitely been applying for things but
i would love to get into content production and keep going with that definitely still in the media
production field um so yeah so hey if you're listening to this yeah media production in london
you need can we hire somebody for you yeah that would be awesome i can't speak highly enough about
working with maddie she is an absolute joy to be around day in and day out like i come to the
office like even you mentioned the lo-fi beats like little things like that make it just a fun
atmosphere you know and you bring that energy every day with your joy and we're gonna miss you
and you're so hard working the the skills you had from when you started to now like it's light years
you know you've improved so much and you're only getting better and you have such a drive and
energy and that's what like is leading you to go to the uk yeah you know because you have such a
passion for this and and you want to just live life to the fullest and work as hard as you can
and hang out with a bunch of cool people like you're doing life right and any company out there
it would be uh they would they would be like so much better to have you yeah they'd be insane
not to hear you yeah insane you can't see it but jesse's making me there's no bad days with maddie
she never comes in here in a bad mood ever ever ever ever it's because you guys are so fun like
you guys make this so fun you guys make me laugh everybody hears my laugh all the time and that's
genuine i swear it's not uh some some laugh track what was some of my favorite moments
whenever maddie comes uh through the mic i'm like i got her yes nailed it so uh we'll uh we'll be
enjoying maddie today and then of course again uh on wednesday and then she's leaving for the uk
sunday night man like it's happening fast i'm just gonna do something real quick for the thumbnail
all right this is how we know all right yeah so the audio listeners maddie is walking over
just coming over here get in get in the thumbnail there it is yeah there okay yay thumbnail
beautiful okay amazing now drew's gonna put like maddie's leaving
yeah oh yeah sad one no no don't we or do we just ai it but they're all sad with the
no no i hate those photos okay there you go you guys can decide yeah everyone yeah
I keep getting messages like
so when you're posing for the thumbnail
I don't do that we don't pose for the thumbnail
just take screen cap from the
show yeah he just takes the dumbest possible
photo of my face or is it you Jesse
that does you do I usually just take
a screen cap of the thumbnail yeah
you're talking about for your I'm talking about
he's talking about I'm talking about me
oh sorry I'm sorry
a lot of Maddie and we need
to bring it back
actually no let's do the
Let's do the happy one.
You like the happy one better?
Okay.
That's fine with us.
I look better.
Trade just before the show started.
So we had Nils Hoglander going to Nashville for a 2029 third.
And we're like, okay.
Sure.
But Brendan Gallagher has been traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Vancouver Canucks.
And it looks like, at least at this point, 50% of his salary will be retained by the Montreal Canadiens.
They wanted to do right by this player.
And listen, in Toronto, we've done way too much right by way too many players.
and it has not benefited us.
But in this particular case,
Brandon Gallagher deserves this.
3.25 is retained by the Canadians.
That is 50%.
That's great.
Gallagher is a Canuck for 3.25.
And he was a major part of this team.
Obviously, the team that went to the finals.
He only played the one playoff game this year,
but has always been a big culture guy.
There's a reason why even this year,
playing fourth line minutes,
he had the assistant captain.
This is the guy you do right by.
You don't do right by a guy
who came to Toronto and played 20 games
and you're like,
well we need to do right by the player this is the guy you do right by and i think for vancouver
when we're talking about they keep talking about culture shifts there guys and i think it's a good
place to start and that starts in management because it's been it's been a a slope sort of
thing where things have been rotten at the top and it's gotten into the dressing room brennan
gallagher is the culture guy i think that they can that they can use for at least this coming year
to help shape some of the new pieces coming in and fix kind of what ails them at least on the
personality side totally and like i think he's got i think he's got good games left yeah uh in
his nhl career i don't think he's done that the habs are really strong on the wings and he he just
doesn't fit the direction they're going um where's the canucks are looking for a direction yeah right
so i i think he fits totally fine um pretty nice work for the canucks to get a player
half retained for free like future considerations is crazy the habs obviously free up that space
you assume they're gonna try to do something with it um but you know i i guess the victory
for the habs is they didn't have to pay assets oh the victory is the 3.25 that they get in
cap space yeah that too they determined that at the end of the playoffs or in the playoffs when
the games actually matter the most they didn't need this player right so going into this season
you don't need him for the 77 games he played last year you can prepare your lineup for the
playoffs here so they're just getting rid of that player and they get 3.25 in relief and it's only
for one more season that they hang on to that money after this season will be off the books i
think it's a good work by the habs just to dump it off it's not going to get easier for him to get
into montreal's lineup either either with uh some of the young guys they have coming up you look at
his his career 911 games you know i would hope he hits a thousand because falling just short of that
is going to be painful i think he's only 34 yeah eric angle said yeah 250 goals is right there
500 points is right there yeah get there eric angle says uh don't bet against this guy his time
with the canadians was up but his time in the nhl is much time being up in the nhl is much further
away than people think and i think part of that's gonna be ice time right he's gonna be he's gonna
have a lot more ice time uh no one no one should go into this expecting brendan gallagher not to
be an nhl or for another couple of years like vancouver i think fans should be excited about
having this guy on your team because he's gonna play all of the minutes he's gonna be a really
good energy in the locker room now with hughes gone like maybe he's even captain if he's willing
to stick around you know because that's crazy he comes in there he's a tone setter he knows
everything that he's learned about being in montreal for so long like i can see it and i
think philip ronick wants to stick around and play a leadership role as well as we keep hearing so
delgar wearing a letter isn't totally insane i think you know i think it's almost a guarantee
right like at least the a yeah yeah and i think i think ronick and him and i don't know what
besters future plans are i know that brock bester didn't sign in vancouver to not make the playoffs
that's i know that for sure because he you know minnesota was so in on him last year
um but he thought hey well we still got a good good thing going here in vancouver maybe last
year was a blip and it turned out it wasn't and then quinn hughes is gone i i wonder about you
know is the is he a guy that's traded and the the guys like gallagher ronick some of these other
guys that have stuck around i know they're stuck with their goalie contracts yeah um they don't
have to be that bad again right that's the thing with the canucks they don't someone has to finish
last right um but the the team who finishes last like the bottom three teams in the nhl
are rarely there just because they're turbo garbage a lot of things have to happen right
um you know you got to have injuries in net you got to be really young and inexperienced
it's mostly injuries it's a lot of injuries right so i'm not convinced the canucks are
going to stay as bad as they were last year i'm not either but they're not going to be great though
exactly yeah and that's okay there's probably still bottom i mean they're pretty comfortably
bottom 10 yep yeah so good for brennan gallagher sometimes life throws your curveballs and you
don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check
this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building

We'll get on to some of the bigger things this weekend.
And I think we have to start in Columbus, guys.
Oh, man.
Because, you know, it's so interesting.
When that Charlie Quill extension was announced a couple months ago,
we're like, okay, so, yeah, he's 34.
He's having a career year.
But it's showing the Columbus faithful, the fans,
and the guys that have been there a long time,
that Columbus are serious about winning.
long term and they want to keep this group together people kind of forget that's what the
warrensky extension was too back then his his contract looks good now but when he signed it
it was expensive right and we're we all looked at that and we're like oh this is the canucks
the canucks sorry switch gears steve uh this is the blue jacket saying we're willing to spend
money we want to keep guys here right well they've always been willing to spend money but
in the succession of maybe 12 to 24 hours we find out that zach warinski has basically told them and
this is right before the draft although they had said they were going to meet after the draft and
then we ran that clip of don waddell saying we should keep this all in house and then he promptly
doesn't keep any of it in house um that warinski is not going to sign their long term he's got two
years left he's not going to sign their long term and just so you understand from an asset management
point of view just on the warinski stuff they need to move them now because with two years left on
his deal it gives columbus the maximum return anybody that gets him knows that he might not
extend but at least you got him for two seasons if you only have the guarantee that it's one
uh next summer the agent is going to hold a lot of the cards because anybody that trades for him
is going to go well i want him for at least two years is he going to sign an extension if not
we're not giving any sort of prospect capital or anything back so so you're forced on one hand and
then the second thing is krill marchenko uh and this came out on sunday jesse and i are sitting
at the draft going oh my god this is almost worse well marchenko's younger and he's a much
overlooked goal scoring power forward big guy scores a lot more than people think go look up
his stat line like he's he's far better he's a very good player there and and and was going to
be a big part i think of what the not just the future future but like the current future uh was
supposed to be he makes 3.85 million right now and he is up for a huge raise but because there's
not a lot of guys kind of like matthew knight it's not a lot of guys like him and and his body size
and that sort of thing um and he has also indicated probably not going to stay here long
term and so two of the major pillars of the columbus blue jackets in a succession of a weekend
like just a couple of just a few hours say we're not going to be here and i don't know if you're
don waddell uh how you can try to convince them otherwise it sounds like the decision has been
made. And if we're believing Chris Johnson from yesterday, he said that people can't get a hold
of him. Yeah, it doesn't seem like the Wierenski situation is going to be solved anytime soon,
according to Chris Johnson. He tweeted yesterday afternoon, of note with Zach Wierenski available
on the trade market. There is some frustration among GMs who haven't been able to get the
Columbus Blue Jackets to engage in talks on the Norse trophy winner. Certainly doesn't seem like
There's urgency from Columbus to move the Wierenski situation along.
So I'm confused about the timeline because the original timeline that I think was set less than a week ago is the Blue Jackets were going to talk to Wierenski after the draft.
And then it was like, they're moving them.
And now it's they're not moving them.
I think I think Don Waddell is on his own timeline, right?
Because he doesn't have to move the player.
He doesn't, but it seems chaotic and they seem screwed.
The reason I said Marchenko is almost worse.
Star players force their way out of situations.
It happens across sports.
The NHL is no different.
Wierenski is not even the first player from the American Olympic team to do it this offseason.
He's not even the second, right?
um a lot of a lot of guys have done this marchenko like you can't just be losing all your good
players like warensky i look at that as you know it's it's definitely bad but it's not shocking
well because he's put in a decade there and there's yeah like larkin there's been a lack of
success yeah like it's it's not not even shocking success like matthews there's been a lack of
success but at least he's made the playoffs yes right and had the opportunity to lose to warrensky
yes yes but like it's not it's not totally shocking that this that warrensky is potentially
available or would potentially want out marchenko is very good but also who the hell are you
well and the reason i say that so supposedly he's asking for pavel dorofeev's contract
yeah who told you you're that well he's the team's leading goal scorer yeah and he's never
scored as much as Pavel Dorofeev okay but in terms of importance to the team he's number one in terms
of putting the puck in the back of that that's valid but the what I'm hearing and correct me if
I'm wrong what I'm hearing is he wants that contract which is 11 million dollars long term
with someone else Marchenko's got more goals than Dorofeev they're the same age
sorry uh marchenko's got more career goals than dorfee yeah career goals but give me seasons
dorfee has been a killer 35 37 the last two marchenko is 31 27 not that far it's not that
far but it's not there okay all right it's not there then if dorfee is at 11 which i apparently
vegas was only willing to go to seven or something um if dorfee is at 11 is marchenko 10
and i think his agent is making the argument that like those contracts are the players aren't too
far off yeah if marchenko's on a better team like if march if you put marchenko in dorafay of spot
on vegas maybe there's a there's four more goals there and then those numbers that you're asking
for look a little closer so that contract isn't too far off it maybe it's nine maybe it's 10 but
11 is probably at the high end but that's what the agent should be asking for i think that's
very fair here's the other thing shoots right yep premium i know not premium position but big
again shoots right yep no it's valid and it is valid like it's for instance like the Leafs I'm
like man is there a nice Marchenko swap here because like we need a right shooter other than
Nylander we have no right shooters on on forward none zero zero uh it's a big deal I don't it's I
feel horrible for Blue Jackets fans I thought we were past this me too you know it started it
started to look like it was coming together a bit even like Jack Reeves has emerged like the
Canucks lose Quinn Hughes and you're like, oh boy.
And then you see what they get for him and you're like, oh, all right.
You know what?
You have a direction.
I liked a lot of the things that Canucks did.
The front office did, even though they got fired last season.
Like they got ahead of their problems and they were able to get decent
halls for Quinn Hughes.
They got a real good package for Kiefer Sherwood.
um i think there was another one in there that i forgot about the sherwood trade that was a good
trade that was a decent trade yeah right they got ahead of of uh some of their problems and they
were able to get decent prices the blue jackets seem very caught off guard by this don waddell
seems very caught off guard by this you know when he was in carolina you hear this sort of thing
about gms all the time and you never know if it's true he was the the head guy and eric tulsky was
the assistant gm and what you heard is yeah but it's tulsky doing all the work it's starting to
look like tulsky did all the work because this this is this is horrible like i don't have anything
cheeky to say about the blue jackets like this is depressing yeah aaron port's line wrote about
how it's one of the most depressing days in blue jackets history and he's not wrong because they
just went through this rebuild you know they rick nash asked for a trade out of there and that was
a long process and then he eventually got his trade out and you think like okay there's franchise
icon they had to eventually trade them we've gone through now the rebuild from that part and then
now we're at the next stage of our franchise where we're actually looking decent we went from near
last a couple times and then now we're fighting for a playoff spot with like 10 games to go we're
right in it and then they they crap the bed at the end but at least they were in it and they're
making strides to get better you have the best defensive in the national hockey league everything's
kind of churning along and you can only just build on top of that going forward and then you get a
couple bombs dropped on you in the middle of the offseason well the offseason just starting and
now you're kind of back to where you were six years ago yeah that's so unbelievably depressing
and like nash was there for 10 well 11 years but two of those were lockouts he was there for two
lockouts that's insane um that's depressing like warwinski jesse he put in his time yes yes and
then he was done with it and then you they it looked like they were through that you know
because and but then now they're just back to where they started and it seems like that in
between period was just lost in a waste rick nash i'll give you a crazy stat then i'll let you go
sure rick nash played 89 playoff games in his career how many were with columbus i think zero
not zero oh no they had that one uh six jesse what do you think uh seven four four oh they got
swept he got oh my so he got four games with them in over 11 years that was the crazy steve mason
year then he goes to the rangers and instantly makes the playoffs four years in a row and then
on the fifth year he's traded to boston and that was his last season plays another 12 playoff games
there like this is a beat the leafs by the way yes um uh this is a that's not even noteworthy
everyone beats them the article i always point back to with portsy just to turn it over to you
here is when he wrote a couple of years ago that columbus was the team parody forgot
it's like caden lidstrom yeah looked like he was gonna be so good and then i think
get the injury bug bit him wierenski now marchenko they just re-signed a 72 year old coach
um yeah they're gonna they're about to lose their captain i don't think we're putting enough into
that right wierenski's not their captain it's boone jenner and he's leaving as one of the
why is he leaving like why aren't you the blue jackets are not hard up on cap space
no and they're not hard up on money either they always spend they should be 38 points in 67 games
pretty good season like you can't even buy your way out of this you know what i mean yeah if your
ownership you're like okay we'll throw money at the situation because nobody wants to stay here
and that's not even working you could spend significantly in free agency and still probably
fall well below the cap like what like what are they at i know it's not the cap i know it's not
that what big contracts boone jenner by the way has played every single playoff game in columbus
blue jackets history with the exception of the four games that rick nash played with them in
0809 that's every crazy every single game they currently have 25 million dollars in cash 25
million dollars in cap space and like warensky i assume wants a raise well yeah of course he's
gonna get a raise right marchenko wants a raise why can't it be you but i know they have some
free eight or restricted free agents greaves is one of them do they have to re-sign fantilli
uh no to do they do yeah oh man this is a nightmare cole sillinger adam fantilli
both rfas yeah so i take it back their cap situation's not even that good
geez that's oh marchenko is going to be eligible for that extension on july 1st but he's due up
next season that's why there's pressure there and they've always played low scoring style so
marchenko like marchenko would have probably not benefited from the low low scoring file i look at
uh fantilli played all 82 last year 60 points or 59 um that's a guy that i think probably is going
to get a lot of money again unless they bridge them i still i still hate the saying even on bad
teams somebody has to score not true not well with him um he he's now going to be the center of it
and i think here's the deal you know like with ottawa although i didn't understand the burakovsky
move um like with ottawa you got the opportunity to take whatever this is and turn it into a
positive right like they were able to get uh a really good draft pick for brady kachuk this year
they then wheeled that to san jose for william ecklund who fits their timeline a little bit
better i was done all right here they've done they've done all right yeah um you know with
rowenski i mean that really could be a franchise altering thing and yesterday frege was on a some
sort of hit and i haven't heard cj show yet too so i don't know what the updates are this morning
but the um the thinking is that you know what frege was saying was well toronto doesn't have
the package to compete with other teams and it seems like it's one other team and it's thomas
harley yeah you can't if you can't compete with that you can't and that's fine but if it's
warinski for harley i mean uh that i i don't mind that for the blue jackets harley was a
top four defenseman for team canada yeah and he's phenomenal he's um i don't know why dallas would
do that to be honest because i think you're getting him right before his prime you've just
developed him and you've got high skin and already i know warinski's amazing i get that but couldn't
harley be that in the next couple of years he's 23 years old warrenski i don't know if harley has
norris potential okay he's just very very good is the norris winner he's no no harley's very very
good and the you get two cheap years of warrenski um versus there's eight years of harley so you
have cost certainty there you have a guy who can't leave in columbus which i think is the number one
thing that they need um and then if you're you're dallas you definitely try to resign waransky
that to me is a move that can make sense a lot of sense for both teams whereas you know i've
been skeptical with with the leafs angle of this because like dallas is a cup contender i know they
lost in the first round this year but they are a cup contender um year in and year out they are a
very solid team that we expect a lot of ranting and was hurt this year i think that affected them
a lot you you have a healthy rantanen and then add a warensky to the mix even though you're
taking harley out oh my god that's really good i just don't see the leafs being a warensky away
from contending for the stanley cup i i see i think that's where we we just we definitely
differ on that one i know i want to say two things for the leafs acquiring him and the
stars potentially the stars it makes so much sense but you're very right they're actually
saving a million dollars if they acquire wierenski and trade harley because harley makes harley's new
deal is 10.5 million and wierenski makes 9.5 million so dallas is actually freeing up cap
space by acquiring zach wierenski for thomas harley i think that deal makes a lot of sense
for the blue jackets if you gotta move wierenski taking thomas harley is a good consolation prize
yeah like you you're you're sitting pretty good as an organization if you if you get harley you
can kind of swallow that pill like it's not too bad um but you're here forever yeah and he's there
for eight years yeah don't forget you're here forever the cap thing is funny but on on the
leaf side of things yeah there's some a lot of people are on your side steve and that like
Wierenski isn't worth the assets that you got to make up for the Leafs because the Leafs aren't at
a really good position right now. But I don't think that people realize how good Wierenski is.
Yes.
I think because he plays in Columbus, there might not be just as much name notoriety with him.
But if you just take that name and you replace it with Kale McCarr, are you thinking differently?
If this whole thing, I'm saying, okay, the Leafs have an opportunity to get Kale McCarr
for nize and danford and a first right i i don't think i think you're thinking a little harder
about it but that is the level that wierenski is at i agree in this league wholeheartedly he
finished seventh in heart trophy voting won the norris and he's the best defenseman last year in
the league he'd be the best defenseman we've had since boria no he'd be the best defenseman in
maple leaf's history yeah you're probably right like that's that's the honest truth about it
and from there you just acquire that talent and then you do the rest of the business
it's the thing you do with the the leafs off season roster the video that people get
when you do the roster in july yeah and then all of your comments are like steve this roster sucks
what the hell are you doing it's like it's the work's not done no i know but here here bring up
their their group because what i'm most concerned about and i already i pointed this out before
we had this conversation is the forward group i think is a little house of horrors
so right now puckpedia has this obviously this isn't carved into stone but it's mckenna
matthews neilander nize tavaris robertson cowan grew macelli joshua quillen lorenz that stinks
now it's not done we know it's not done robertson i imagine stays macelli probably doesn't
for this exercise let's assume cowan stays and it's someone like danford going out the door yeah
i think you can find a danford faster than you can find a cowan to be honest oh i know he's a
they just drafted a shitload of defensemen yeah so let's say the only guy they're losing off their
actual roster is nice yes which is what it should be right oh in that trade so now you're you're
going McKenna Matthews Nylander Cowan Tavares Robertson Joshua grew Michele um blank Quillen
Lorenz so you gotta you gotta fill that okay great how with what assets does it matter because you
have Matthews Nylander Wierenski that is a cornerstone of a championship team yes you have
three pillars that i look at and i say go fill in the rest of the gaps that could win a stanley cop
are you trading riley to hopefully get a forward that helps you yeah i don't from from there i
don't really care what the conversation is i think you start from that and then you work your way out
to go move or whatever other pieces on the roster there are to fill in the forward group around
those three guys because nothing else matters no you have those three people on one roster plus you
had Tavares on his deal and then you had McKenna there who knows what McKenna can be in a year's
time after a season in the NHL same with Cowan growing into that and your defense is pretty
good with Radish there now too and Tanev and McCabe if you're not moving any of those contracts
and OEL and I think like the whole point is the Stanley Cup yeah and when you have Wierenski
Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Radish.
Those are five guys who
that's enough to just fill
in the rest of the gaps to win the Stanley Cup. And that's where
your pro scouting staff needs to be
intelligent in the way that
Florida's has been intelligent, in the
way that Carolina's has been intelligent.
Vegas, as much as I hate to say it, brilliant
pro scouting staff. I will forever be a
Vegas hater, but they are phenomenally well
run. No one
Kelly says
Vegas is bad. Yeah, they
do they say lots of stuff tremendous weirdo but no one says they're bad I think if you look at
the best teams and Jesse brought up the graphic like two weeks ago when the cup was awarded
how do these teams make it how do they get these players they get them via trade and and you you
have to give to get and listen Ben Danford I really like him if he becomes like I think what
they need to be working on him or working with him on is how do we make you a Chris Tanev type
player not exactly Chris Tanev but how do we mentor you to become a shutdown D and that's
great whatever if you got to give that guy up along with nice to get the norris trophy winning
defenseman at nine million bucks or nine and a half for two more seasons no that's objectively
no it's objectively a good trade it's objectively you got better yeah what i'm worried about is
matthews has two years left wierenski has two years left but the way things have been going
You have to look at it like one.
Oh, no, that's 100% what it is.
The Oilers have one year to win with Hunter.
But wouldn't you say, Steve, that getting Rowinsky makes it more likely that both resign?
Because that's what I think.
Because now they're together.
Only those guys know.
And if they find chemistry, they also have the same agent.
Listen, it's very clear from this weekend that the Toronto Maple Leafs are building a team that will survive Austin Matthews.
That's what they want to do.
It's very clear that that's what they want.
Now, would they take a step back if he asked for a trade?
Absolutely.
but my point is that very clearly from the draft they were part of the plan that was pitched to
management was uh we got an empty cupboard here and we got star players that have way too much
power over this organization because they know that two-thirds for carlo is objectively good
it was great i mean in the moment in the moment yeah and i think large picture i know it sucks
yeah it'd be great to have him on the team but he's not yeah and so i don't know man like to me
vegas continues to add good people florida continues to add good people they pay the
price Mackie Samaskevich has gone Nick Suzuki has gone who else had these guys traded off their
right no Brandstrom never worked out but that was a big trade with Ottawa as well at the time
you know you got to think about it like this guy is good nice is good too but this guy's great
Dora Faev was just traded off the off the Vegas roster for a first round pick like I might have
been two and they went to the finals and he scored 12 goals on the way and they're like see ya
yeah like yeah to me that's how i want to operate and i love matthew nize but you have a top four
of tanev mccabe radish and warinski it's crazy holy shit who cares who plays the bottom pair
did you even say oel no because i think if they brought him in you potentially look at moving oel
cost-controlled guy to a team that can give you the forward you're looking for
in a lot of minutes from uh mr myers there yeah or maybe you just maybe you just keep them i love
oel so i don't want them to rate them but like you know just andre myers is gonna you know
let's go make steve upset in like february well andre oel would be just two bastards i'm just
two mean guys too much of a student of the leafs ineptitude like okay so getting warrensky makes
matthews more likely to stay and then you get the both of them great okay they're 21st in the league
by christmas now what you make your decisions from there i think man but now you don't have
nice but you have matthews and morensky and what do you trade morensky for you're hoping to get a
guy like nice you know what i mean so i you understand my total hesitation totally but like
the the trade you're outlining nize danford and i don't know first what first but they got colorado
oh yeah yeah that's true i guess they got color and the year objectively that's good value for
the leafs but there's a big old caveat there yeah i look at the roster that we had there and i take
out nize i take out riley i put renski and riley spot and then there's a blank space where nize is
And that's two million dollars more on the cap, plus the minus seven of of nice.
So you have the space there and there's two million dollars, I should say, of more for Wierenski over Riley.
And then you take away the seven point seven that nice makes.
And I say, like, that's that's a lot better starting point than this one right now.
They'd be one of the only teams in the league who could justifiably have to do on the power play.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, and McKenna was talking, I don't know if you guys saw his avails, but he was saying, like, I don't think he's expecting, and I don't think they're setting up with the expectation that he's playing with Matthews.
What, five on five?
I have a feeling.
No shot.
I think he's going to be playing with Nylander, Tavares.
And I think on the right side, I honestly believe, I think the Leafs are going to go after Patrick Kane.
I think they are.
I think it makes a ton of sense.
He's a playmaker.
They don't need him to play all the top line minutes.
but when you look at how this sort of plays out the Leafs are going to need a veteran playmaker
up there McKenna and Matthews both looked up to the way Kane played then you have if you make a
deal like this you're able to fill that right spot so you've got Kane Nylander down the side
you probably I think they're going to go after Boone Jenner as well and so you know then it
starts to fill out a little bit more I think they go after Jenner and did Bjorkstrand yeah
Yeah, Bjorkstrand played for the Blue Jackets.
I could see them going after him.
He was Tampa, Tampa.
He was on Tampa, but I think he played for the Blue Jackets.
But he's a right shot guy who's like six foot a million.
The thing with Bjorkstrand is he had a really off year,
and I'm not totally sure he'd play much more
than a third line role on this team.
No, but like to me, I look at him as like a Michelli replacement.
Oh, I'd take him over Michelli in a heartbeat.
Yeah.
Yeah, but this is the thing.
Like now you start to see, well, how does it fill out, right?
Without Nyes there, what happens?
you've got cowan mckenna on the left side and i'll grant you that's young but uh no team's perfect
and you got to do it um and cowan i think earned at least a shot at it montreal was pretty damn
young that's true yeah and then third line you got to sort out fourth line you got to sort out
but if you can get beau grew on that fourth line center position dakota joshua on the left
stephen lorenz on the right and i'm reading this morning uh freed was just on uh the fan hockey
show and he said that though brovsky's ask has not come down very much in terms of money they
keep linking him to toronto and it looks like uh stallers and lorenz might be a big part of that
because he loved playing with them and lorenz was his shooting partner so now you got stallers
brovsky as your goaltending duo do you then build what you're losing hildeby do you trade him
you'd have to you'd have to now i don't know what hildeby is worth on the market but
you know like we're doing a lot it seems he should well there's a lot that needs to be done
you look at that bring it back up bring up the puckpedia you could you could justifiably say
hildeby has more trade value than wool yeah well he's uh he's magic beans and people like that
he's magic beans he's younger and uh mill like a bajillion dollars cheaper like people are saying
oh the leafs didn't make any you know i think we got a little spoiled with those two trades that
we got this roster is not even close to done not even close i mean there's so much to do yeah yeah
yeah maybe you find some time for pesetta too just being a crazy person well yeah i don't think
we've put enough uh stock into like graduating guys from the marley's and giving them a shot
out of camp but that's also magic beans i don't know if they have enough time for that you know
if the whole thing is you're scared to lose matthews you can't be like oh let's try and
develop guys it's not the year for that this yeah i it's scary still so they've done a bunch of
things exciting things i still don't know what they are you know it's disappointing it thinking
about the guys who could have graduated from the marley's last year it looks like even more of a
waste because like that's what have last year should have been yeah like i know steve yes i've
Hey, but we got the first overall pick.
We can't be mad.
No, I know, but like...
Ethical tank, ethical tank, ethical tank.
Bruby.
That's what all of the back half last year should have been.
Bogru time, Quillen time.
All of the Tengas-Pengases in the world on the Marley.
That's what last year...
Tengas-Pengas is an option.
Yeah.
We should have known.
We should really stop calling him that.
Tengas...
No, we will double down on Tengas-Pengas.
Yeah, but he's not even Latvian.
We already have...
We got one of those now.
Yeah, we got a Patrick's something.
Patrick's Plumich.
I love it.
Steve, what do you think about Berube's decision
to not play all the young guys?
He should answer for his crimes.
How?
Because, dude, I don't know anything about any of the guys
we called up at the end of the year.
Did you learn anything about William Villeneuve?
No.
You learn anything about Luke Hames?
No.
You learn anything about Jacob Quillen
other than he probably shouldn't ever play on a fourth line?
I wish that we used that time
so that now we're not just guessing through training camp,
which is always kind of sketchy.
You learn anything about Ryan Twerberg?
Oh, no, I wish.
The Tervberg?
The Tervberg?
The Berg.
Why did they put a T in front of the V?
Berg Daddy.
What am I supposed to do with that?
Yeah, like Villeneuve, you go, oh, unreal Calder Cup playoff.
Torberg, same thing.
A bunch of guys, same thing.
Until you see it in the NHL.
Yeah, it's different.
Yeah, like that's why Hildeby as a potential trade ship is so interesting.
Like we're so distracted by Artur Aktyomov.
And again, complete magic beans.
we saw him at the end of the season in the nhl i need to remind everyone it was not good
obviously was called a cup uh playoff mvp dennis hildeby in the 20 games he played last year among
goalies who played 20 or more games had the third highest save percentage in the league
in the league i can't remember the two guys ahead of him i think one was scott wedgewood
that seems like a really good sales pitch you're welcome that's what i'm saying you know
they were hours from free agency yeah and there seems to be a new wave of trades coming
yeah like three trades happened since we entered the office today yep it's wild i don't ever read

than you think now the other thing too and frees walsted and wedgwood walsted thank you i the other
thing that frege did was he was like oh i'm just spitballing here and i'm glad kyle bukaska's
called him out because he doesn't spitball and he's like oh i just wonder if one team could get
both deals done and both deals he's talking about dylan larkin and i'm like okay so he's not
spitballing he's he legitimately has heard something but he can't verify it's a wierenski
and larkin well the thought is jason robertson could be going the other way holy what was who
what was right detroit what was said was oh that makes sense the seattle deal was not just 15
million it was more like 15 625 that's insane and assets and assets and the reason that goes
and the well it was apparently a two or three first round picks a fish they threw in at the
lottery yeah expansion draft sorry and they said kiss it yeah um but so yeah so it would have been
three picks go into dallas robertson to seattle for 15.625 i think it's a 125 million dollar
contract that he offered him and he said no and apparently from his camp the perspective is well
this shows you how much we want to be in dallas but that doesn't change anything they want to
make over 14 dallas doesn't want to pay over miko 12 and a half so that's a pretty big gap and
neither side seems to be closing they're a pretty smart team deadlines clear the mind but if you
want Dylan Larkin who's cost controlled and would for sure go to Dallas because who wouldn't go to
Dallas and Robertson is from Michigan and then I was thinking with my Leaf brand I'm like well
it'd be great to reunite the Robertson brothers wouldn't it of course because Nick has it's been
a challenging relationship I think with the Leafs like I think over the last couple of years he's
found a spot in the lineup but certainly I don't think it's gone the way he would have wanted it
to go and probably the Leafs too where based on where they selected him sure so Dallas could end
up with both of these guys that'd be so fun be fun if they're on the same line it would be
i don't know if that would ever happen well long story short i think the um it's you know a
realistic possibility how does detroit say no to that how do you say no to jason robertson you can't
does that make you better well you need a center it's like jt conf or setting up uh jason robertson
i don't think that's good enough but also you're getting jason robertson to pay him twice as much
is dylan market like even if you look at it like well he's better okay he makes twice as much
yeah like if he ends up signing for 15 million that's crazy so i asked uh i asked a couple of
people because um i was listening to a new york post article or article um podcast on on the um
on the new york rangers uh it was about the rangers obviously new york post uh uh and uh
They were saying, well, now that we've got Dorofeev,
is there any point in trading Trochek?
But from what people have talked to, they've said,
well, no, Trochek's just got his head around getting traded,
and I think probably would want to go.
Guys, he's an American Olympian.
What are you doing?
Can Detroit get a guy like that?
A guy like, oh, my God, like Trochek.
So if you're moving Larkin out, can you move Trochek?
That was just me thinking.
I have nothing on that.
I legit have nothing.
I spitball all the time.
I got to respect Steve Eisenman for being his own man.
I really do.
He seemed pissed.
Did you see the clip?
Oh, yeah.
sitting beside draper and he's like here's what happened we got a call it was like oh my god
steve's pissed he's definitely telegraphing i will sit you for half a decade just to prove a point
yeah maddie you can't play this video but uh here's the audio of steve irisman talking about
the dylan larkin situation shortly after the season i received a phone call from dylan larkin's
agent uh informing me that dylan would like to be traded uh a week or so after that um
Dylan's agent followed up with a short list of teams that Dylan would consider waiving his no
trade to go to having said that Dylan has five years remaining on his contract my job as the
manager of the Detroit Red Wings is always to do what is in the best sense of interest of the
Detroit Red Wings and I will act accordingly to that so I cannot make any guarantees or did not
make any guarantees that that request could or would be met. There is certainly a lot of
uncertainty around that. So for the time being, I can confirm yes, that that request was made.
I think I will be in a position to maybe answer more questions and be more specific in the future.
I appreciate everyone's understanding. I'm sure you have a lot of questions,
but at this time i feel it's best uh just to leave it at that he's pissed man and then he uh yeah he
went on to not answer any more questions about it yeah um like not to make everything about the
leafs but that's the team i know the best like nick robertson requested a trade he's still on
the leafs and fans like him yeah very much that's important like they don't really hold it against
him. Ilya Mikheyev asked for a trade, and Kyle Dubas said, no, we like you. He played that season
for the Leafs, played very well, and he parlayed that into a huge contract with the Canucks.
And now maybe. I think it was the Canucks. He may be coming back this summer, by the way.
Who knows? He might be. Why not? That's a fun player. I liked him. I was sad when he left.
Good third line guy. Yeah, totally. This is your captain.
yeah is it the same with like is it boone jenner ish to you does it feel
is there well here's here's what i think so the boone jenner thing it feels to me like the water
was poisoned after the season but the question i think has got to be with warinski with larkin
with jason robertson even robertson's contracts up but like what's the dressing room like
i like really we all remember the matt duchesne picture right where he's just
he's like sad listen i don't know what the dressing room's like i can tell you fans
are gonna boo the shit out of him if he shows up for the home opener you mean larkin yeah not
warrenski i don't think he's gonna get booed in columbus no i no i i think i agree with that
i think the fans be booing steve eisenman yes oh there's enough booing to go around
there's enough booing to go around
boy
he's I think he's royally fumbled this
situation
but also like okay
he's made a number of mistakes that have
led to this but
also the
best thing he could probably do for the
organization as manager
is not cave to this
player right now the yeah
the best thing is be a stubborn asshole
yes yeah because don't let them bully you you you have five years left that's my leverage
your leverage is well we only want to go to three teams and so i go oh let me talk to them
okay all their deals suck ass so um see it can't steve eisenman could make dylan larkin sit and
play not play hockey for five years if you wanted to we just saw the golden knights exercise a
technicality within the law not even the rule that nobody wants to exercise with bruce cassidy
if the red wings wanted to do it they could and it wouldn't violate anything in the nhlpa
but they wouldn't even be like yeah just stay home or whatever no like we want you to play
we set the line up today go go out there and if you don't go you're in violation of your contract
yes and you miss out on millions and millions and millions of dollars the best thing
for eisenman and the red wings would be a matt duchesne sort of result where like the avalanche
built a uh not a dynasty but they built the 2026 avalanche off the back of that trade that happened
eight years ago that that's a crazy trade tree i don't know if i ever did that one
but it's a three-team deal and they somehow managed to fleece two teams at once
in the sends and preds that trade set the sends back up it's it whatever they had going
it killed it immediately and they're only now recovering from it right preds didn't do so hot
in that deal too jesse's trying to bring it up but it's so much to parse through yeah the assets
it's just there's so many moving parts like i can tell you just based off memory you know what i did
do a trade tree for this i can tell you just based off memory i believe the way it worked is one of
the draft picks colorado got they turned into eustace ananin who they then turned into scott
wedgwood who was one of the best goalies in the nhl this year nearly a decade later right so that
saga was probably gross and uncomfortable for for avalanche fans but the fruits that it bore
we're great we're incredible that is the kind of result you got to be hoping here hoping for here
if you're a red wings fan if this guy's traded in the next few days like in the next few weeks
it's going to stink but you could get something great back chili bw on twitter look at this did
a graphic for the matt duchesne trade holy see why don't you do these anymore
you're you wouldn't be doing this steve i will never buy that excuse
don't act like this is your time who would be making these graphics yeah we
oh no not the graphics we employ drew yeah
man i don't know if you want to go through it but no well it's it's well here like forget ottawa
like because we're talking about larkin here what did the abs get look at this if you want
to read it out for the people listening andrew hammond shane bowers a first round pick a 2019
19-3rd, Sam Gerrard.
Oh, yeah, Gerrard, I forgot.
It wasn't even.
2018 second-round pick and prospect, Vladislav Kemenov.
And then you can see kind of what everything became.
So, yeah, they moved that Shane Bowers for Keith Kincaid.
The first-round pick becomes, oh, Bo Byram.
Bo Byram.
There you go.
Because Ottawa had a terrible year, and they picked fourth overall.
This is a result of all the Bo Byram moves.
Wow.
and then there's the uh third they're still under contract branch open here's the second round pick
which is yeah uses anan in there and then that's scott wedgwood yeah dude wow that's a haul that's
a haul and a half that helped them win the cup yep that helped them win the cup in 2022 it did
and sam's oh my god still under contract oh so you know what's funny this is out of date
this is because what did they get for sam gerrard wasn't it brett kulak kulak and they just signed
to a contract extension this is from june 27th 2025 yeah so it's a oh my god we're like a year
later yeah that's when they made this graphic i just pulled oh my god almost exactly a year later
well done jesse yeah yeah man this like this thing is still going oh yeah definitely it will
be for a long time so that i there's not a ton of comparable situations here for dylan larkin
that's one i think you have to hope for yeah i think you got oh yeah three teams always expanded
it to like six how about it's 32 and you can kiss my ass 31 no and we'll trade you to the coyotes
we'll trade you back to detroit why not seriously no like you don't have half a decade with us
who do you think you are yeah yep you have to be a hard ass about this it's it's so so all of this
i want to i want to bring in another sport here for a second because i want to bring this back
to rinsky just a little bit sure and and dylan larkin too but rinsky more so it might be
intertwined right rumors this morning that the toronto raptors and clippers talked a kawaii
leonard trade this weekend and that kawaii leonard will only sign an extension in toronto which is
bizarre and you know we can't really get into it but what is it what the raptors are on they've
sort of had to rebuild everything they're on the an upward trajectory you know the ceiling of that
we just don't know Kawhi Leonard had a great season last year played a lot average 28 points
a game yeah the Raptors are doing what they should do which is yeah well you know it might
be Brandon Ingram and something else and some firsts and stuff like that but does anybody care
right they're just going to add good players I think it comes back to add the good player
figure out the non-premium positions later it's like oh man but we might be able to draft a guy
who eventually plays on our third line with that pick and you know when you get into what i noticed
especially in the draft uh like later on is in the first round and we were doing our stream
you know guys are they're selecting guys it's like man this guy projects is a really strong middle
six when the leafs drafted frederick goche admittedly he was drafted way too high and the
leaf scouting system sucked and their gm sucked at the time but they're they are at the draft
they're like this guy projects as a maybe third line center and he only ever got to be fourth
liner the frustrating thing about frederick gauthier is he turned into pretty much exactly
what the leafs thought he would yeah yeah which why did you waste a depth guy and you big you
used a first on him so what you suck so you know matthew nize is good what do you care about the
rest of it you know this guy's good now right and that's i know and if you're dallas that's
why you're making the harley move yeah because harley might be warinski but warinski is warinski
but i dallas has a way more realistic path to a cup no questions oh yeah no question easier
division not that it's easy but easier division well it's funny it's an easier division until
the playoffs yeah and then it's awful you're dallas you got to be pushing harder than the
lease for warinski yeah like that makes so much more sense for dallas but doesn't mean the leaf
shouldn't be in on it yeah it's yeah it's not that the leaf shouldn't be in on it but like this
morning when i heard the harley stuff i was like see that makes a lot more sense yeah right or
there's just less risk associated if i'm columbus i want that yeah yes yes it's thomas harley
objectively yeah like listen bringing the norris trophy winning defenseman to toronto would be a
lot of fun dallas's package is better yeah it's no if i'm columbus i'm seeing if i can get jason
robertson and thomas harley if you're columbus yeah that's interesting jason robertson didn't
want to go to seattle why is he going to go to columbus i don't think he would
i don't think he would either i think i think you marchico i mean listen straight up marchico
would be a good ad for the leafs too i'd be calling about him as well this here's what's
weird there used to be rich teams and poor teams now it's teams where like their money's no good
seattle is dying to give you generational wealth i wonder if they trade for marchenko
if they were willing to give a three first for robertson it would cost you less i think you're
cooking with gas there yep but they need some freaking centers in seattle man like like one of
the things i kind of keep wondering and i guess it's because they're in division is why have we
heard nothing about the leafs and larkin probably because he doesn't want to come to canada that's
why but okay but the leafs need a center i would argue the leafs need a center more than you need
a winger yeah i don't think larkin's gonna wait for for toronto maybe and i don't think maybe
maybe stevie y doesn't want to see larkin three four times a year maybe the better conversation
is why does like over a quarter of the nhl have trade protection it's just standard amongst the
standard when you get to that that level yeah yeah it's people the weird quirk about the nhl
by the way people are like um people are like well they need to get rid of those i'm like the
players are never giving that up imagine no imagine you having a job and then you walk into
work one day and and your boss says to you you're leaving now and you're going to a completely
different city you didn't choose and i'd be like okay that's awesome because i also make 10 million
dollars yes like that's the difference that's cool yeah i'm a professional athlete they don't
look at it like that especially if i'm an nba player i'm like oh my contract's a max 60 million
dollars a year what the fuck i care i gotta live in houston that's you looking at it like a poor
you're looking at it like a poor yeah right and that's how yeah every time these conversations
happen the comments are full of like these guys they make 12 million dollars like what do i give
anthony davis getting traded from like la to dallas to washington he's fucking anthony davis
it's a hundred million dollars and his place leap one out of every three doesn't have to be
play basketball to make that money yeah i i want to say i i think it's interesting too that this
rowenski stuff has held up the darn old nurse market because philadelphia who apparently are
the biggest suitor for nurse are now all of a sudden like well zach's available that one kind
of died right it did well it died when warrenski became available because philadelphia really likes
him and they want him and he might go there like that's another team he could go to man
just the lamborghini market is really holding up the dodge durango like that's what it is
those those are not similar players i know other than they play defense like i think it comes down
to cap management too and apparently ottawa is very interested in rasmus ristolinen so you'd
bring in nurse as a risto thing but if you're if you're giving up assets steve you're not making
the nurse trade first you're making the rinsky trade and then going all right well here's what
i have left for nurse i'm fascinated by this fascinated by this yeah yeah this better not
bleed into july it will it will but there's don't screw my summer up dawn there's so much uh there's
so much out there in terms of like what needs to get done i i have a feeling though because it's
only the 29th of june i have a feeling we don't see much in the next couple days i can see that
i have a feeling it'll be like a quiet start to the week me i think it was not there was nothing
yesterday after the draft you could tell people were just tired i think wednesday is going to be
a ton of uh extension videos i agree with you this is where we see we finally see uh the explosion
in uh in um the rise of contract costs yep yep pavel dorofeev screwed it up for everybody
well that was the one this was gonna happen i know it was gonna happen but that was the one
you wait for that logan stanley contract forget pavel dorofeev who's a 30 30 guy
logan stanley who's a 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 and then all of a sudden seven guy i've been beating the drum
i think he's gonna get somewhere near zadorov i agree with you that's a lot for logan stanley
uh-huh and did you see the beck malenstein extension today six years three million a year
honestly i really like that deal for buffalo okay tell me about that because you've seen a lot of
buffalo hockey yeah no beck mellenstein is so they acquired him for a second round pick which
at the time i was like have you lost your mind that second round pick is now in washington and
goes by the name of cole hudson so i think washington's pretty happy about that deal
but he's a big belligerent battering ram who can contribute a tiny bit but he's the guy who makes
the opponent worse okay right and so to get him in a hair under three million long term that's so
good it's good you know you know what i was uh thinking about the other day like players under
contract are so much more valuable now than they were a couple years ago remember the islanders
buried pierre engvall yeah you know what he's making three million three million yeah but he's
bad dude he was always bad yeah everybody was just like surely you can find a home for him no
not with the flat cap once guys yeah but it's not flat and flat anymore no but once guys signed
extensions back then their trade value plummeted because nobody wanted them they wanted the player
who was a free agent like oh i might be able to get him for this but once he was signed it was
like oh fuck it i can't get near that i guess what i'm saying is i think someone should trade for
that player try to turn him into a reclamation project he stinks dude he's so weird all his
raw skills are incredible his brain is bad yeah his hockey brain is terrible he's in incredible
shape he's got all the tools that's why the you're saying people should trade for him the islanders
did yeah he and they tried he makes pierre engvall made me like a more complicated hockey fan
like where uh instead of just being like that guy fast that guy's slow i looked at him i'm like that
was a terrible path to the puck what are you what are you doing right anyway malenstein yeah um you
need players like that to
get through a regular season
to succeed in the playoffs and Buffalo has them now

princess margaret but it is actually a world-renowned cancer research center it's canada's
leading cancer research center all-star team of scientists and doctors who are working together
uh to score the next big goal against cancer what's something jesse and i did a lot with the
princess margaret lottery at virgin radio when we were there is we went to the houses that they
give away they do the big lotteries and all that but what is amazing is they would always bring in
people that were patients of or former patients of the princess margaret and they talk about the
level of care that you get there and it is world-class second to none like hospitals can be
intimidating uh they can be really impersonal talk about bedside manner stuff like that the
Princess Margaret is very, very different.
And this is the way that they help fund
everything that they do, which is spectacular.
Two in five Canadians will be diagnosed
with cancer in their lifetime

What did you guys think about the Jack Drury extension in Nashville? 4.5 million bucks?
i think it's good for nashville and the trade makes perfect sense for colorado right they can't
afford to pay jack drury four and a half million dollars it doesn't make sense for them even if
they were able to pull it off it makes way more sense to get two cheaper guys with potential
for two more years at i believe combined svechkov and laroe make less than half
of what jack drury makes that makes a lot of sense for colorado jack drury and his potential
for nashville that's fine jesse do you think there's any chance with colorado and this cap
do you think there's any chance that we see an extension for kale mccarr announced july 1st
because i believe he can sign one there can't he he's got the one year left yeah i i don't know i
if i'm do you think he stays is my point if i'm the avalanche like here's a blank check
i don't care as a content creator i hope he does i don't know why there would be any hesitation to
do it on july 1st what if there is by who colorado for what reason well they i mean they they stuck
it to miko ranton right and and 12 listen 12 and a half million dollars is what they would not go
to with miko right and yes it's worked out marty niches was very very good in the regular season
did disappear in the in the third round they were a lot of injuries but he was not good
he wasn't good i'm not totally sure it has worked out okay well 100 and something points is not bad
in the regular season no but playoff other guy was miko ranton the other guy was miko ranton and i
think if you were to say who would you rather have in the playoffs my answer is miko ranton
all day even even though he was injured in these these playoffs and wasn't as good
they ground him on that deal and it wins all year long and whatever do you think there's as even do
Either of you think there's a remotest possibility
that Kale McCarr doesn't get the blank check
because I feel like if they were going to do that,
they would have done with Rantanen too.
They would have just paid the extra couple million.
I think there's a difference between Kale McCarr and Mikko Rantanen.
They did the Mikko Rantanen stuff because of Kale McCarr.
You know you're going to have to pay that piper.
And here he is.
Pay him.
It's going to be expensive.
I think the Marty Nietzsche deal kind of proved
that they were willing to pay people
who they feel like are worth the money after that point, right?
because he's making 11.5 yeah not a cheap amount for martin nietzsche yeah right like personally
i think it was such a disaster in the playoffs that before his no move club actually it hasn't
even kicked in yet because it's july 1st like there was probably an opportunity to trade martin
nietzsche because i hated his game in the playoffs but they don't feel that same way they're not
joe sackett and i aren't aligned in that regard but i think we're aligned and you just pay kale
mccarr what he wants you guys have the same amount of cups as general managers it's true we got uh
one each yes that is true um and we saw in the playoffs when kale mccarr was injured and not in
there how just out in the woods and lost colorado was without him they need this player he's you
can argue that he's more important in some different ways than nathan mckinnon because of
the way he drives the play on the back end they're obviously so important to the team together but
they need this player like it's a blank check in my eyes i just wonder how quickly it takes for
them to get there it could be a little bit of grinding but it'll get done it'll get done like
let's not let's not fear monger like hudson situation if you're talking about guaven well
that was that was that was self-inflicted like i don't know also that sucks man that's one of the
best contracts in the why why did they force the canadians into that they should have just waited
we spent all september being like what about lane hudson and he makes and they're like no we won't
do more than dobson he's like fine sign me to eight years he's gonna be he will be he's underpaid
right now he was underpaid the day he signed the contract i'm gonna give a really weird garage car
interview where i'm trying to strong arm the montreal canadians only to get absolutely
atomic wedgie waistband over my ears what was that i know that it's one of the strangest things
in the podcast history it is on the show it is and you know what's funny is that was that the
greatest the greatest part about that is you know habs fans love lane hudson and they should yeah
you should love kent hughes and jeff gordon even more i think they do yeah i think they do those
guys sell like hughes and gordon jerseys they should absolutely you should just say you know
what they should sell suits that say hughes and gordon and the number should be whatever hudson's
cap it is 8.85 or something is it 8.8 yeah sorry taxi a we're stealing it yeah i don't think it's
a good time to plug that one of those gentlemen has been
in on this network right if you want to
if you want to hear a Jeff Gordon interview
where he's just he's
first off he's really nice guy
he's going to the Leafs
why would he be a nice
guy he has wedgied the Leafs so many
times this freaking guy he's just
it's you guys talk about how he built
the Bruins in an hour yeah while
he was intern GM yeah three month
three month period gets Chara
Bergeron Bergeron Marchand
and Luchich Luchich
so bergeron marshan lucic in the same draft signs chara and the bruins are like yeah thanks for your
interim gm ship get the fuck out of here we need shirely thank you and that's what they service and
they got rid of him within a year yeah and then what did he do he went and built the early 2010s
rangers who were great and then he rebuilt the rangers who were great and they fired him
when they were great and then he went and built the montreal canadiens with a tantrum
with a tantrum people forget about that saga where like i mean gordon probably shouldn't
have done what he did yep but it ruined it ruined them it ruined them uh what are they what are they
what have they been since and what are they right now what are they going i think rangers fans are
happy with the dorothea move okay great they're happy with the albert smith's pick sure okay but
all the losing you had a top five pick you better be all right with that yeah yeah yeah yeah i mean
not screwing that up is like such a bare minimum well that's what they're happy with right now i
think it's been it's they've been watching a long desert of bad news in new york so it's nice to see
some good i don't think it's uh unfair to say they should have just kept that very good general
manager i agree with you uh now a couple of leafs tidbits just because it just broke and i figured
we'll throw it in the show uh robertson quillen and andre have all been qualified if matias
michelli who was not qualified yet is not qualified by today 5 p.m is the deadline yeah
and his qualifying is 4.1 million which is way too high it's too much money he would become an
unrestricted free agent now they could also just sign him to an extension that's less than that
yeah they could be not qualifying him and then regrouping on some sort of two-year deal or
something like that you know but i don't know about you someone giving him that i can see moving
on from michelli well everybody's throwing the player cards out there like he's some great player
and he might be but the only time he showed up was garbage time and i don't i i just don't like
that and and i don't know is uh is he a useful piece on a team sure but you know as we talked
about earlier there's like one or two things he does that are good same with robertson i think
he's a tremendously skilled player when he wants to be he's he's very inconsistent and he's a
defensive liability i don't i don't throw i feel like his his defensive numbers are okay but there
were so many plays where he's on it's it's sort of like uh like a little bit of gardner yeah like
gardner's numbers were great his video was awful right yep and oh he's a good defensive player
don't tell me that look at this shit yeah look at that look at here look at this shit and michelle
got a lot of extra points too because you know he's on the power play at the end of the year a
lot of injuries and stuff i don't know man you had some like real highlight moments i'd be open
to keeping them how many not at that number how many guys do you want on the team that can do
like one thing this is the problem this is the like i robertson to me is i love his effort i
love his energy i love this guy uh and i know he doesn't want to be here but i'm gonna love him
anyway he's gonna score goals right he's gonna score goals this shouldn't be why why would you
have both you can't have both this shouldn't be that difficult of a question to answer who's
playing with austin matthews they don't that person i don't believe has a toronto maple leaf
uniform like either of them that's why i think it's i think michelli proved last season that
he can't be a top six forward cannot michelli it's actually kind of weird how little he played
with austin he's not good enough yeah but like of all the shit they tried which was a lot of stuff
um barely i think they recognize the skills just not there to play on a first line you know i think
skills there it's everything else yeah right well and like the sheer amount so here's where it could
work the sheer amount that berube used matthews in the defensive zone was insane but because of that
and because of his limitations you can't have michelli on that line under berube maybe it's
different under hiller i don't know because i don't know who the other centers are yeah i don't
think you take that risk like i wouldn't go in planning michelli in any top six role if he signs
for two years at three million per how do we feel i don't want him on the team like at all it's it's
like people were you know i got like anthony patrelli who from abel leaves hot stuff who i
really like was was uh was tweeting about hey i'm kind of surprised they didn't actually hang
on to carlo because he is at very least a good penalty killer if there was injuries you know
tan have played 10 games last year he's right all fair points he's right um but sometimes it's like
it's time it's time and and michelli's time was well and when he started with the leafs it was
the only way to get those picks and they obviously really wanted them yeah and i think those picks
are gone now i also think chica did kind of tip his hand he said you know uh getting a fresh start
was important to carlo so i think he wanted to go too and i don't blame him you have a chance to
play andre you could graduate a guy like villeneuve and i i just think i'd be on that man like
there's just guys from last season where i'm like what do you do yeah what do you do and i i that
was always my issue with some of the dubious teams right like you know people kept trying to tell me
that justin hall was good and i was like yes when he plays with jake muzzin you keep trying to sell
me on alex kerfoot yeah he's good when you play him with john tavaris in his prime why why isn't
jared mccann a leaf why isn't jared mccann a leaf right now imagine how good jared mccann would
have looked on tavaris and i just that's that's for me that's where i'm like i i don't to me he's
one of those dennis mulligan type guys where i don't feel hot or cold i just feel like it's just
a blur in the lineup like i just oh man that's great oh man nick oh give me more nick patan
minutes you know what i mean all right i know what you mean that to me is the quintessential
dubious trade patan no well yes or hendrick lapierre this weekend hendrick lapierre uh
no freaking dennis mulligan for mason marchman oh but it was the kind of deal where i go okay
i remember exactly what i said at the time and it's aged like milk but like i don't regret it
Because I was following the logic at the time.
Mulligan was younger, had played more games, had put up more points.
I was surprised they even got him for Marchment,
who had played like three games, looked good in those three games,
but the Leafs also had to basically be like, here's how you skate.
They got him as a project.
Dubas used the Marlies for so many projects that turned into players
for other teams i know but let's we've we've done that we've done that right but marchment was like
oh my god immediately a smash hit in florida it's like frig off but it was keith that didn't trust
him keith didn't want to play him he wasn't a good skater well turned out okay he turned out okay uh
and i think let's not forget brad shillivan gave gave up a third round pick for matthias macelli
yeah i think he got absolutely fleeced in that deal for a player who was healthy scratched a
couple times in utah and then he goes to toronto and it's just been very lukewarm to underwhelming
and i wouldn't i wouldn't be sad if they moved on from this player here's here's the the
quintessential uh true living stat that i said recently uh because the marner trade to vegas
wasn't made official until july 1st okay according to puckpedia
brad true living made more waiver claims between the two nick wa trades than he did
trades okay it was three waiver claims versus two trades he was absolutely paralyzed yeah
yeah crazy but oh and by the way lost all three players okay but to this to this i i this is
clearly some cleanup by the organization carlo being gone um uh i think michelle i think the
fact that they haven't qualified him and we haven't heard anything like oh the leafs are
working on an extension with michelle like i'm sure if they were michelle's agent would want
that out there i'm sure he wouldn't want that to be like oh man let's the least the least you're
asking they want them is there anyone else they gotta qualify i don't know no you it was andre
and and robert yeah all the guys who are up for who need their qualifying offers they've submitted
except for michelle got it and i think if they were going to they they would have yeah so um
toronto's draft by the way and we'll talk about it a little bit later with clipboard guy but i
just want to quickly mention that athletic espn elite prospects all pretty much unanimous it was
an a or an a plus for the toronto maple east on the draft floor it seems like they did a great job
but we never know because we never know i'm always like i like reading way too much in like
oh they really trust their scout who uh went to all the saskatoon blade games right yeah they
drafted two guys off of that team who if i'm not mistaken wasn't particularly special um this year
belecky is a really interesting pick from the um from the kitchener rangers who were an absolute
wagon ethan mckenzie ethan or evan mckenzie ethan i think off off of the oil kings i couldn't believe
he was still available and an overager too and an overage time overager canadian world junior
still available in the third round at 69th overall that was really good um i appreciated
the leafs admin saying nice to that pick yes and then we the leafs had 69 and 169 and they also
said nice again i saw that i love that um little sense of humor the finnish goalie uh inasto um
is an interesting one elite prospects is really high on him the latvian goalie where patrick's
what uh patrick's plumage i love a latvian name it always ends with an s so i was talking about
it in one of my group chats and james myrtle's in it and he was just like how dare you guys
have an opinion about this i know teenage latvian how does a latvian i know but someone as soon as
he was picked i got a text on my phone from someone in the nhl and they're like damn it i
wanted him oh damn it i wanted him and then they told me that they got a message from someone else
in the nhl with a different team and they said damn it i wanted him well that's great okay i mean
we jesse and i were in there for the mckenzie olsen goodmanson uh anisto and pluman's uh drafts
i don't think we were there for cooper williams were we jesse were we there for cooper williams
i i think we were out in the concourse by that yeah yeah so we we saw them all you didn't see
yaroslav fedoseev a lot of chl guys is what i noticed that's interesting you know the they
went with the three w's and the two o's it's an incredible league man it's an incredible league
probably easier to see a ton of their games probably easier to get a ton of data
like i don't want to sound insulting but who the hell was scouting patrick plumage
in lapia yeah i wanted like this was i'm usually able to be like okay i i know i can read these
stats and be like i can tell you if this is good or bad because i know roughly what the averages
are of this league like i could you know sort of do that for um anasto plumage i don't know
no i don't we don't do a ton of talking about like latvia internationally okay their domestic league
we don't talk about any of that i don't watch a lot of them gala games you should apparently you
should um no they had a very good draft and the nerds agree that's good i'm happy about hey that's
a good start we'll take that right yeah nostra pipetti is back oh is he nostra pipetti is so
back he he called i can't remember it was either i think he called the mckenzie and olsen picks
oh that's good yeah a lot of a lot of um you could find a lot of people being like oh that was my guy
with so many of the picks that the leafs made they were they were very overdue for a draft like this
well like a good one well yes a good one but you just spend and you spend and you spend and you
spend i can't remember the last time anyone reacted to a leafs draft like this like people
forget the the matthews draft it was like really disappointing people hated it they hated it
outside of him yeah like so so the leafs got a really good grade and people like yeah well they
got mckenna they should get a good grade 2016 all the draft nerds hated the job that they did
and go back it's awful it's uh yeager korshkov was their second pick he played one game had a goal
um yeah there he is so it's korshkov grunstrom's had a decent career wolves had an okay career
jd greenway adam brooks barely played keaton middleton's barely played and then no one after
the fourth round yeah where they had uh one two three four picks that never ended up playing
yep that's not okay right they had so many picks i'm pretty sure they traded down they like sold
off because this is like back when they were still a seller this draft sucks do you remember
korshkov's the one game it was against buffalo i believe it was in buffalo of course it was and
he scored the goal he scored a goal he scored their only goal in a loss and well go go look
it up he never got to play i believe you i don't need to look at all my lookup machine
i can i can picture it i can picture it the last thing i want to hit at least on the hockey side
and then we'll talk a little draft uh is um i want to talk about jj peterka in boston
boston gave up big package here but in terms of management of assets it's not a great look for
utah it just didn't work and i think andre turney and and jj peterka just didn't get a get on uh but
i have to ask are you ready for a power play that features uh pasta and peterka that seems pretty
scary can i play the video with the bruins welcoming in peterka yeah facetime welcome
to be a boston brewing first of all um thank you you're gonna love the fans you're gonna love the
city and you're gonna you're gonna love everything about it so very very excited to have you um
and uh no no hopefully you do yeah i am i'm super pumped all right good are you at home in uh
i'm in munich right now okay what time is it it's one o'clock right now okay
did you know something was happening oh my god this is early as hell
I wonder who gave him the heads up to stay up a little later because something might be happening
well that's what you have an agent that's what Alan always does JJ I just wanted to make sure
you had your coffee anyway yeah so uh here's what I thought yeah no the Atlantic division
it's so good it's so good being here i love it um shit yeah no that's freaking that's garbage
but i i don't know if it is all that humiliating for uh utah like
josh stone is obviously great yeah in buffalo but kessel ring was the other part of that deal
and all it got buffalo was they got to move up seven spots in the draft i believe yep
uh okay that so that's what it got them and then for you you were able to parlay paturka
into you had a season of paturka and then what was it two first not bad that's not bad i guess
not bad i guess it's not but it doesn't look great and it doesn't make you better immediately
okay which is definitely a problem right like that i had to look at so many deals like that like
like buffalo with byram for example in chicago with byram actually i'm like okay chicago got
better buffalo got worse buffalo won the trade you know yeah yeah i can see that and then they
got the you know fourth overall pick which is pretty sweet yes looks like they drafted well
with it okay all right two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why

Jesse, thoughts from the draft while we were there
it was so much fun to be down in buffalo for the saturday um because in the downtown was really
cool we walked by the baseball diamond which is just the most minor league stadium that's ever
existed in the in the best way in the best way yeah we're not making fun of here no no i love
a minor league ballpark it was cool to see that and then we go into the arena and the fan fest
you know it's it's cool it's outside the arena but it's a little it's not very sparse you know
a lot not a lot of people you go in a lot of empty seats and you realize that the decentralization
of the nhl draft has really taken away from the amount of people that will congregate to the cities
for the draft yeah i think that was the part i want to emphasize the most about like hey
when you take away all the gms then you take away the media and then you take away the fans from it
being a true event year-end party for everybody to attend and i missed that part of the draft
because we had such a good time in nashville when we were there for that draft we had such a good
time in montreal for that draft and those were the old drafts where everybody was there in the
industry and including like people in the game the media and all the fans like they made it an
event too you just run there's so many people along in the streets and this now the draft is
really a more small scale event for family and friends of the players who are being drafted
and those were kind of the only people there plus people in buffalo who were just want to attend
like the hardcore hockey fans and then the people on day one for the mckenna pick who were least
fans and drive down that was an adventure there for them and that was cool for them to see but
um it was a lot of fun being in buffalo for for that but it could have been so much more i think
i think the thing is that i was in favor of decentralizing the draft because i thought it
would make the broadcast better and we know from experience now that that's not true although it
is still better i don't want the gms on stage they should not be on stage i don't need to hear
the fucking tight five that they have every time they get up there i don't care where they were
drinking the night before this year's draft was objectively better than last year absolutely yeah
i like this broadcast i didn't mind it so the gms can be there but you don't need to be on tv
that's that's my thing just take the general managers on off of tv if you guys saw the don
waddell press conference or the clip that we ran on the last show you know exactly why these are
not charismatic people they don't make a good entertaining product and the draft should be
an entertaining product that cities bid on like in the nfl 1.7 million people went to pittsburgh
this year that's bigger than pittsburgh 1.7 million was the estimate that's how many people
were picked no it's just going for the draft you could see they had the big outdoor stage there's
still hundreds of thousands of people they are like the fifth round right it's a business thing
they should want people to come in they should want to be able to see general managers and players
and all that that's the part for me that like you should get business done at the draft and uh
there were a lot of trades what was funny actually being in the uh uh being in the arena is how loud
when they say trade alerts yeah it's fucking loud like it was like we'd be just sitting there and
the music could be playing and then and then oh it was like oh my god like giant train horn yeah
and then and the whole stadium lights up red yes it's unbelievable and then and then it was so
funny because obviously later in the in the drafts you get a bunch of just picks traded for
picks right and there'd be there was one guy if there was no players involved he'd be like boring
i was just gonna ask yeah were there any good chirps it was great i love that just
and also the sabers fans that were there they booed the hell out of the leafs every time they
booed montreal they booed boston it was great yeah the fans who were there were electric yeah they
were great one thing and it was cool that we met a lot of listeners shout out all you guys who came
up to us down there um we recorded some videos that are up on the sdpn social so go follow us
on instagram at sdpn sports you'll see us there um adam tried buffalo wings i did uh did you enjoy
them love them they love the thing is with a good buffalo sauce if you smell it's got to sting
your nose it's got to get in there and delicious the guy working the escalator can you talk about
that daryl uh so we went jesse and i you know so they have all the trophies there we already told
you about the stanley cup by the way the stanley cup did i say this on the show busted to hell no
um we met the people that managed the stanley cup were so nice to us mira i want to give her
a particular shout out she was incredible to us um and she was like listen can we get the cup from
this angle because it's a little beaten up but she said that one thing she did point out was that the
um the carolina hurricanes are great she's like they are such good people like so that was cool
uh but over on the other side you got all the other trophies right so you got your heart you
got your um norris you got uh art rot let me tell you the mark messier trophy is a fucking joke i
can't believe they even put that up there it's the ugliest i've never really seen it it's the
stupidest looking trophy it's a waste of time and then you showed me the picture can we please
it's like a child i can see if i can text it to jesse it's like a child drew it and then they
were like we'll make it into metal like it's just terrible and and it looks like a nathan for you
creation absolutely i'll send it to i gotta you gotta okay yeah gotta load it so but we ran into
daryl who has got to be like our dad's age right and daryl uh was one of the ushers there and i
think daryl's retired and this is just his part-time gig and he he said i'm a big listener
of you guys hey and so he was talking to us about um how he was talking about a few things he was
very happy with the moves yarma was making which was great uh jesse what else did we talk about
we're talking about um uh the there was so he he actually pointed jesse out because he was like i
really liked your opinion on blah blah blah i'm like ah there's jesse pandering again no right
no because we were in agreement with how well the offseason has gone so far yeah buffalo no it was
great they've been they've been stuck in the dark for so many years and last year like december
onwards was such a surprise and a great moment for the team in the city and i think even though
you lose a player like tuck they've been building on that momentum that they've had and i think
they're set up well to have a keep going in this off season and keep building on it so yeah darryl
and i were just chatting about how good the buffalo sabers are yeah so it was fantastic big
shout out to him he was a really nice guy really uh hardcore listener of the show yeah we met a lot
of really nice people and you know what's great is you know when you have to do streeters which i
usually hate doing um uh in toronto people are just like busy and they got shit to do and they
don't want to fucking talk to you okay uh in buffalo everybody's like listen if i can't i'm
gonna find you someone who can't like uh like they were just the city it's you know everybody
calls the city of good neighbors they really are and it's i love buffalo for uh that because
remember my car broke down there and there's people stopping on the side of the road to try
to help me out uh but when when you're downtown what's really cool about it too is there is you
know most of buffalo that you see now was built in the 20s when it was a boom town and you have
these beautiful art deco buildings that are still there and and some of them are hotels some of them
are old banks or whatever but the the thing that no one talks about with buffalo is how amazing
the architecture is and it's like detroit and pittsburgh because they're all in that same
chain of rust belt cities that built up a lot in the 20s and then the 30s took them out and then
post-world war ii industry changed and all that but the architecture is amazing and i loved that
i was trying not to be uber nerd adam was doing a good job pointing out like things i would never
notice like he was showing me these windows and these windows were fucking ginormous three
three-story windows that are like this the ceiling of the next to the hotel used to be like
would you say a bank it's an old bank yeah you can tell because there's you know the banks have
those old wooden uh coffered um walls that only go up partial way but you know one of the things
that they did was when they were building this stuff it was meant to show how great buffalo or
pittsburgh or whatever whatever city you were in it was meant to show how great it was to be there
and it was a sign of like we have these shitty office buildings now but it was a sign of well
your city's made it and when people come to your city and do business in your city there's money
here and you're meant to be inspired by it right that's what i love about art deco it's supposed to
to to do that so i i don't know man i i was trying not to be a guy but it was the ceilings were like
really cool and he was noticing all that so it was cool to walk around there yeah it's a it's a
cool cool city to look at and and be around and here's the the trophies that we also it was like
favorite trophy right there i didn't expect them to actually have like the trophies out there you
just like touch them and it's like that's the norris trophy yeah and and there's all of them
just going down them they even had the prince of wales and the clarence campbell uh ones there too
that's the uh rocket richard sorry uh and then we're getting to the ted lindsey and the uh heart
trophy beautiful yeah it was cool and her trophy's so good it's good also i didn't realize how big
they are they're huge they're fucking huge pieces what is this one and gold and everything yeah and
then um and then we're getting to this stupid look at the mark messier leadership part in my
in my mouth that is such a bad trophy no but how close do you get in on the face
oh i don't i don't show the face up close no uh we can if you zoom in oh you gotta um
the mark messier trophy is the big if you're not aware he gets to pick the winner it is not
a an award that's voted on by anybody there's not even a certain criteria mark messier just
gets a trophy that he gets to be like that guy that's it what are we doing it's a nonsense award
that doesn't make any sense anyways that's the mark messier and his face it looks like a
like a like a caveman painting yeah the face is that joke it looks like
like all the other tropes medieval art there's real effort in the other trophies real artistry
in the other they're real trophies like look at that the like art ross is really cool because
they have these little pucks around it and then they just keep filling in the names and
it says mcdavid 22 times yeah yeah mcdavid kucherov mckinnon the last 12 years or whatever
it's been there's like six names on that trophy yeah it's not and like randomly jamie bent well
three guys we talked about that we saw them like oh there's jamie bent it's 40 points that won the
rs three guys won at the 90s three guys lemieux jogger gretzky yeah yeah yeah that's it that's
crazy like it's it's uh that's a special award man i i don't know i like that you can tell though
by the way like like sabers fans first off in the arena it's great but the concourse it gary
betman was right it needs upgrades and like i'm really surprised that they've not like considering
the money the pagulas have and considering the money they've thrown at highmark not highmark
stadium anymore uh what is it uh what's it going to be i think it's keeping the name is it still
highmark yeah new highmark i guess that opens this year like there's there's literal cracks in the
floor that they've patched up at key bank and i'm like you could put some tiles down the food is as
advertised really good food's awesome yeah like we've gone through that with fat guy corner yeah
seeing in person is delicious yeah i did a bit on our instagram where i tried to find the saber
saber be your saber um couldn't do it because they don't actually sell it outside of big games
or most of the games i think that's a missed opportunity by the way like how like how do
you not just pack enough and sell them because everybody wants them yeah so we couldn't find
that especially at the draft like right yeah like the draft that maybe you do at the big games or
whatever but i haven't had the draft i'm at the draft i'm a hardcore fan i'm here to be ripped
off yes give me the 50 beer saber i would pay 50 for that american yeah a hundred percent i'm not
here i'm not a casual i'm not like i don't know like i'm here to i'm here to spend money like an
idiot but shout out brian he had one and he let me hold it and he thought i was gonna steal it
but i didn't steal it brian and here's the stanley cup which is if you can tell here this is crooked
yeah and that's the good angle yeah this this cup is the good angle there's a big dent on this side
two they smashed the hell out of this thing yeah i wonder how much time and effort and money they
spend every year on maintaining the stanley cup a lot like i'm just like okay there's a dent in the
cup how do you fix that oh yeah you buff that well you cannot that's not how you're fixing
dent i believe they heat it up yeah you buff it take it off pieces and you heat it up and then
you reform it you can buff that i love this trophy god yeah it's great it's great and the people that
take care of it are super kind one day really really nice people so yeah and we didn't touch
it we refuse to touch it our hands are on the table but we are not touching the cup i was i
was telling adam when we go take the picture don't touch it because you have to hold the
possibility that maybe one day you actually win it yeah so you never know that's the rule have
you touched it uh i think when i was a kid that doesn't count i don't know that doesn't count as
a kid you don't you don't know you're not as an adult no you don't touch it until they win then
you can touch it no matter like if you're a panthers fan you can touch that cup you don't
care no what if you win it yourself one day well you're not gonna win it yourself if you're an
adult panther i got news for you you're not winning it yourself when the leafs win it we
can touch it is that that's the rule yeah yeah yeah so we'll never touch it again
all right now one of the other things from the draft is what right at this moment we ran into
a couple of guys who knew clipboard guy who became a bit of a viral sensation
and funnily enough clipboard guy is a listener of this show so i think it's time to bring on josh
all right we want to introduce you to the ultimate draft expert who was also featured
on nhl network they got him first during the draft josh lipfield also known as clipboard guy
so josh before you say anything i gotta tell you how jesse and i uh found out about you
because it wasn't on tv and it wasn't on twitter it was your friends um we were we were taking a
picture next to the very beat-up stanley cup and a couple people came up to us in leicester season
like hey man you guys do the sdp can we get a picture whatever and they're like yeah we got
another friend here but he's still on the draft floor and he's got his clipboard with him and i
remember just tagging that as that's a hardcore guy like you kind of just whatever and then all
of a sudden jesse and i are at a bar eating dinner uh later that day and you're on yeah and you're
going viral it was amazing you know that that was a crazy experience i mean first of all thank you
for having me i'm a massive fan of the show absolute honor to be here and you know i i could
not have less planned this i remember i remember walking out of my house with the clipboard
and my fiance says please don't bring that thing to the draft
you're gonna be such a nerd and i said well i am a nerd right so that makes sense right so so is
this something you do every draft you sit do you go to the draft do you sit uh uh or do you sit at
home with a clip like what do you what's your is draft a thing for you like tell us and can you
just explain like you have a hundred and something prospects on your clipboard like this is something
you do if i break it down yeah my hockey journey started young i've always been fascinated with the
draft and minor hockey then when i was 15 i was lucky enough to be hired in the leafs mailroom
oh and so i worked there for a bit they knew i was interested in scouting so i interviewed some
with some scouts pick their brain learn how to evaluate prospects and you know after that i never
really pursued a career in it but i still did it and from then on so for 12 years now i do a top
110 for uh skaters uh rankings every single year so i bring the clipboard to whatever draft party
i'm going to and as people are drafted i'm crossing them off and yeah that's what i do for
12 years that's oh 12 years oh my god and how have your rankings been like how as a scout how
are you how are you what's your percentage how are you batting success rate i think i think i've
gotten a better and better every year i kind of like it to like be hard on myself and really go
back and see where i messed up um i remember it was uh 2024 and thankfully he proved me wrong
but when we picked ben danford the next two guys on my list were cole hudson oh and and
Igor Sershinov wow that's tough yeah so I'm guessing you were you were concerned you're
upset yeah I was pretty upset I had both in my top 20 so like I thought like how could we pass
on these guys but you know Danford looks great he's gonna be a solid five six maybe even four
defensemen you get that at the end of the first you can't complain yeah no that's great I mean
listen uh it's we understand the nerddom right steve like oh my god yeah no absolutely embrace
what's wrong with you i i love it that's that's that's uh my life where how did you land on 110
it's an odd number i just uh that usually takes me to like the mid
sixth round because i don't i don't rank goalies right it's just a good spot to go i mean any more
is just because i never thought i would show these to anyone right right it's just for you
You're doing it for the love of the game.
It's just for me.
It's for me and whoever else is at my draft party I'm talking to.
Right.
Right.
And let me ask you this.
So how do you think the Leafs did?
Like, what's your ranking of the Leafs?
How do you think?
Who are your top teams in the draft?
Should we trust what ESPN and The Athletic are telling us about the teams that drafted well and the teams that didn't?
Does Josh have a hot take?
Give it to us.
I guess my hot take is this is my favorite draft Leafs I've ever had.
wow in my 12 years um i have i mean i have the famous clipboard right here there it is
yes i can go i go down the list but the leafs took the leaf took my number one my number
53 56 58 81 and 110. so i'm absolutely thrilled wow i mean you know in the arena they kept showing
me after every single pick celebrating and i i wish i could tell you i was hamming it up for
the cameras but that was 100 genuine they just kept taking the top players on my list over and
over and over again and i was thrilled yeah it was it was pretty cool when that carlo trade went
through because jesse and i were like oh they're gonna pick like three four times this round this
is great like the third round was awesome it was four out of 15 picks yeah something yeah it was
cool is the third round what won it for you or was it the belecky oh yeah i mean i i love
balecki i was at the mem cup in colona a few weeks ago so i saw him there quite a bit uh i i love
balecki his combination of size his vision is special and he can make that that one move at
the blue line make a defender miss and he's he's up in the offense uh love the player love that
second round pick but the third round we just kept taking my top guys and i was thrilled awesome
i love if you don't mind me asking what do you do in your everyday life because all you do is
dedicate your time to scouting i know you got i assume you got a full-time gig with it you're not
doing hockey stuff yeah yeah i i work in real estate um yeah but honestly every lunch period
i'm turning on whatever european hockey games on and i get home and if there's not a leafs game
i'm watching ohl qmjhl ncaa whatever's on whatever the top prospects are playing so
that's what i'm doing every day that's incredible yeah that's very very cool somebody needs somebody
needs to pick you up god i love it took his like like even if it like the passion alone no yeah
working in the league like this is insane you you took your vacation time and your money
and just went to the mem cup because that's what i'm assuming you do that most years
actually my first time there my good buddy jordan yeah he's an altrician he moved out
there a few years ago so he was there mem cup was there it was a perfect combination
Have you had any outreach from any teams, be they junior or professional, and you don't have to say what league, to say, wait, let's chat?
You know, and I'll say this into the camera, I'm available.
I've had a lot of radio shows, a lot of podcasts, a few prospect sites reach out, and I'm super grateful.
I know the thing I'm even most grateful for is so many people that I've looked up to and I've
learned from now follow me on Twitter and have been messaging me about prospects and that has
been so so cool I think one of the funniest moments is I mean I didn't think this would be
such like a big of a thing it was the sixth round who's even watching anymore but after the draft
me and my buddies go to a bar and we walk in and the waitress immediately says that's the clipboard
guy yeah and everyone starts cheering and i'm like i guess this is a little bigger of a deal
than i thought oh yeah so we gotta make cbg t-shirts that's right yeah the board guy what
what's his twitter and i'm following him right now uh it is thank you josh it is i'm just looking
it up because i just see your name in my in our chat uh it is josh where is it i'm gonna unfollow
josh i have too many josh could probably say it at josh underscore live he's right here yeah
probably say is twitter him no no no he's he's done more than enough he's fine um uh josh we
hope that you end up working for one of these prospect sites or one of these teams or whatever
because that this is the way it starts people always ask like hey how did you how do you get
into sports whether that's on the broadcasting side or the or the business side or the scouting
side whatever it starts with i really effing love this and you can't stop me from loving this and i
don't know what else to do with my spare time i love this so much yeah right i mean that's how
we all got started i mean steve you started on youtube when no one knew what it was on a webcam
that your your your then girlfriend now wife bought you for like 19 yeah no there's nothing
about uh the beginning or middle or right now of my career that makes any sense so freaking
whatever you want to do dude go for it like you this is so um this reminds me of like hockey
twitter like 15 years ago like you're you're the kind of person that makes the online hockey
community go around like we need you know at the end of the day i i think especially online
especially when it comes to like niche stuff i think you just need a select group of people who
are absolutely obsessed and that's you like what you do is special and i'm i'm glad people are
are seeing that yeah i'm lucky enough that my fiance is a youtuber so i got this whole
recording studio in my guest room that's great oh no way what does she do she makes like
retrospective um video essays on relationships we saw growing up as a kid on like television
oh that's sick that's cool do you want to shout out her channel just sure yeah caitlin mckillop
on youtube and tiktok all right okay awesome we will thank you josh josh josh lebfeld uh please
Follow him, Josh, on Twitter.
Be on the lookout for his prospect rankings, which I'm sure you've already got next year's list published.
Right, Josh?
Like you're already out there.
But thanks so much for joining us.
