Starting point is 00:01:10 Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! It's Friday, October the 2nd. As we record this, and the top eight scores in the NHL are all Edmonton Oilers or Vancouver Canucks. The top eight.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Nyes isn't in there? He is not. I'm surprised. Can you name for me before I get into the top eight. Can you name for me the two people? Actually, there's a lot of people tied
Starting point is 00:01:37 at three points. But name for me the people that are nine and ten, and I'll give you I'll give you guys points if you get somebody outside of that. Someone has Oh, nine and tenth in scoring. Oh, a place?
Starting point is 00:01:53 Wow. Yeah, ninth and tenth place. Yeah. So these people have three points? Yes. Name a player with three points. Give me Matthew Nyes? Yes. He's 15th, but yes. Give me Nick Robertson? Nick Robertson does not have three points. He just has the two goals.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Yeah. And then... And the run from behind. No. No. Mason Marchment. No. There's a leaf on there. A current leave? Yes, a current leaf. Plays on the third line. Easton Cowan.
Starting point is 00:02:25 That's right. Now, he's 20th in league scoring. But the way the NHL has logged it. Jesse, do you have a couple of... Yeah, Macklin-Sellibrini had three points last night. Yep. He's got three assists. But the NHL has logged in as Charlie Coyle and Brock Nelson rounding out the top 10 for whatever reason.
Starting point is 00:02:39 I don't know why, but that's the way the NHL.com does it. Now, your top eight scores in the league. From three to eight are all tied with four points. Marco Rossi, Vizzili Pod Colson, who played for both teams. Paul Codder, who's insane. Alias Pedersen is in the top five in NHL scoring. Who could have called that? Philip Ronick, noted Alan Walsh client.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Leon, who the hell's ever heard of him, Drysidal. And then with seven points in second place, Connor McDavid, one goal, six assists. And your NHL leader in points with four goals and four assists, Evan, mother, F, and Bouchard. Of course. Crazy. That shit says one goal, six assists.
Starting point is 00:03:22 I know. That's two games in. And that could have happened in one period, honestly. It might have. And so before we get in the last night's game, I want to just say that, you know, we found out that news, wasn't going to play before the opening game. And he didn't even get announced in front of the crowd.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I forgot about this guys, because he was getting work done on his LBI or whatever he's got the injury. But they didn't announce him in front of the crowd regardless, which is super weird. That is odd. And that was even like, Oilers fans were like, why? They announced Max Domi.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Yeah. Right? Yeah. Well, the Oilers didn't. But, yeah. Yeah, no, that would be odd. But Nuge did not get the announcement. Hyman gets injured in the first game.
Starting point is 00:04:00 He's on IR for two weeks. Brutal. And so going into last night's game, and Jesse, you can bring this up on screen if you want to. Bob Stauffer tweeted these out. Dude, it's awful. And I love this. Edmonton-Oilers morning skate in Vancouver. Pod Colson, McDavid, Drysiddle.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Awesome. Jones, Doc Capitan. Oh. Formanton Michaels Joseph. Like, I'm not trying to be a dick. Who's Michael? I have, I do not know. If you would put Michaels on there, I'd been like who he played for.
Starting point is 00:04:27 Okay. He scored. He did score. I believe you. First career on NHL goal. It would be weird if he didn't. And it was, there were 16 goals. And despite all of this, Trent Frederick is still on the fourth line with Ike Howard and Samanski.
Starting point is 00:04:41 And Ike Howard. That's so crazy. So that was your line. Everybody was like, holy moly, that looks bad. And I tweeted this out before the game. I'm quite proud of this tweet. I said it does not matter who's in the lineup. Are McDavid, dry saddle and Bouchard there?
Starting point is 00:04:53 Yep. Then who cares? They have a chance to win. And they won. All three non-first lines are very believable fourth lines. Yes. And Evan Bouchard, by the end of the first period, had the four goals and four assists. That makes him the NHL leader. He did not, believe it or not, Evan Bouchard, after the first period, did not score a point last night. I do believe that, Adam.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Now, this game was insanity. And by the way, Tuesday night was insanity too. Absolutely insane. The beginning of the season is always so good. Especially in Edmonton. Yes. Because here's the deal. Edmonton goes up for nothing in the first. first. Then they go up 5-0. And then, hey, well, now it's 5-1. Thanks, Paul Cotter, who is the MVP of the Vancouver Canucks. Absolutely love that player. Then Trent Frederick scores a goal, which is great, because we weren't sure if he ever would again. Then Brock Bester scores a goal. Then McDavid scores a goal.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Then Capitan scores a goal. You're like, man, this has to be over. It's like, what is it? 7-2 at that point? So, um, oh, uh, 8-2. 8-2. I think it was the stanchion on Twitter. They posted that because it's like a Forsberg goal from Kappan, and it's like, stop, he's already dead. And I just responded, that's the game-winning goal. Yes. That goal put Edmonton up six.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Because it ended up being the game winner. Pappenden scores short-handed, it's 8-2. And then towards the end of the period with a second left to go, Arsdeep Bain scores a goal. And you're like, oh, well, it's 7-3. Cool. Cool. And the Canucks score four goals in the next period. actually make a game of it. And you know, what's so fascinating about it is the amount of people
Starting point is 00:06:36 who are writing the Oilers off as though, first off, as if this is how the season's going to go for them, which it isn't. I've never felt better about a take. Oilers are the exact same as they've always been. That's not a compliment or a criticism. It's just the truth. Verified fact. Objectively, they do this every year. I don't think a lot of people are going to disagree with your take, though. Doesn't make it a hot take. It's a good take. It's not. It's not. It's not. I'm really a hot take. I'm starting to feel like everything is a hot take. The Babcock stuff and friggin the Montreal take from last
Starting point is 00:07:13 episode. I think they... We'll get into that. I think they found something with the Joseph Pod Colson pairing there on the third line with Foremanton there. I thought Matthew Joseph had a really good game. He's bounced around a lot in this league. Yes. He can't really find a spot. So maybe this is where he finally can play to his full potential. Him and his brother, honestly. Yeah. Him and his brother are like sort of, you keep waiting for them to make it.
Starting point is 00:07:37 And then they do and then they don't. And then, you know, maybe this is it. Yeah. I thought they played with a lot of speed, which is kind of just the Edmonton's whole thing. And they can skate around circles in Vancouver. And it was very apparent. But just the defensive side of it, it's just ugly.
Starting point is 00:07:52 It's nobody on that team could play defense. I didn't see. Now, I'll lean on YouTube for this. Is Devon Levi getting the shiny new toy pass? Yes. Or was he genuinely, were the goals not necessarily on him? Can I just be honest with you? What?
Starting point is 00:08:17 If there are seven goals that go in? Yeah. What do you think the answer to that question is? You had a bad night. And, you know, the thing about watching the NHL is that you've been fed bullshit propaganda your whole life about how average people don't understand. understand goaltending. Or hockey. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Well, yeah, people will tell you, oh, but goaltending is voodoo. And we've said it on this show. What we mean by that is we don't know sometimes why they perform so well and then fall off a cliff and then pop back. But what that has become is actually you don't know what bad goaltending looks like. Look at the player it's on. Every single shot in the NHL happens because there's a defensive breakdown. If there were no defensive breakdowns on a team, they wouldn't allow any shots.
Starting point is 00:09:02 And if there were no turnovers, they wouldn't allow any shots. Is there a good way to allow 13 goals on 45 shots? Because that's what the Oilers have done. No. And it would tell you, and I mean, we went through the Jari goals, the 25 whole goals, which were insane against Vancouver on Tuesday. They're getting slurpy goaltending at them because they're safe percentages 7-11. Let's say that four of those goals, it's bad team defense.
Starting point is 00:09:28 That's still absolutely unacceptable goaltending. Yeah, I think that's exactly it because it's seven on the board. And like, I think a lot of the, before is a good number. You look at that and a lot of some of them are just like, okay, you've got a free deflection in front. This guy, like, no one covered their man. They got a shot. But then like, okay, what about the other half of those goals? You know, you got to stop one.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And this, the seventh goal, I think, is a really good example of that. It's Jamie Alexiak coming up. He's at the top of the faceoff circle. And Levi has a clear look at the puck. a player. Look how deep he is. It is a defensive breakdown where, like, Bouchard, you got to get over and get your man. Like, Jamie Olexia should have a free run right to the goalie, but he's so far out that
Starting point is 00:10:12 he should make this save here to help your team in this situation. No, like, okay, I think I can't tell who the forward is. Could be maybe doing a better job. No, that's, I don't, that's a save. Make the same. Every single time that's got to be a save at the NHL level. You can twist your brain into trying to blame the players in the defensive zone. But like, no, make the fucking say from the guy who's the defenseman who's taking a snapshot.
Starting point is 00:10:41 It's like a half one-timer snapshot. It doesn't even look like he's getting everything on it. Like unless Al McKinnis is waltzing out of a time machine like directly into that puck. What? Yeah. So you might not have seen it, but it comes off like a pass. So it's like a one-timer snapshot that he just wires. But I want to save you.
Starting point is 00:10:59 That can't go in. I want to save. And I feel like there were so many instances of that on both nights. Yeah. Like, okay, defensive breakdowns, but like your goalie's not helping you. Don't give me defensive breakdowns when the shots are 3019. Like, I like again, like, yeah, two on ones and sometimes guys get away. Holy, holy, make a save.
Starting point is 00:11:20 To start the game, I think they got up 13-1 in shots. So, wow. Here's the other thing. That's when they made it five, nothing. Jesse, that clip that you put up there is so illustrative of a few things that happened in last night's game. Can you just do me one favor and bring it back up? And there's one detail that you guys didn't note and I don't blame you for this. What's the time on the fucking board?
Starting point is 00:11:43 1.30 left in the third. Why does Vancouver believe they have a shot with 90 seconds to go? Because they do. And why is that, Steve? Because Edmonton can't stop a beach ball. And it is not all on team defense. I will grant you that that lineup was less than ideal last night. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:01 I will grant you that the forward group can do a better job in team defense and Babcock's putting in a new system and it's a short and preseason. And by the way, I think we need to give every team a little bit of grace on defense. That's a lot of grace. Well, I mean, look at what happened to Tampa last night. You know, like Florida Panthers haven't looked or they didn't look great. You know, the short and preseason, we haven't really talked about this. The shortened preseason could lead to.
Starting point is 00:12:25 I met Florida Carolina, by the way. Carolina didn't look great. Oh. The, the preseason, the shortened preseason could lead to a bump in scoring league wide. Certainly. Just because every team is catastrophic. But my point in this is, is this, okay, the reason that Vancouver, the Paul Cotter led Vancouver Canucks feel like they have a chance is because they do, because the goaltending sucks. And what do we know about Toronto? Toronto, we had our, we've had our share of shaky goal years. Sure. Remember how the Leafs would play in front of Jack Campbell when he was good. And then they'd have to put Peter Morazic in.
Starting point is 00:12:58 How would they play when Peter Marazic was in that guy? It was, it was bad for general heart health. But, but beyond the fact that Peter Marasic didn't know where his posts were. At all. The, the fact is that the Leafs played like, the Leafs actually played worse in front of him.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Yeah. Because they had no confidence in front of him. Yeah. That's part of this too. If you're, you know, you're Ryan Shea, you just walked in here. But imagine the PTSD that Jake Walman, Matthias Atcombe, Evan Bouchard. I mean, darnel nurse must have been like, come on.
Starting point is 00:13:31 It's not always me. And I think that's where I look at the Oilers and I go. The second that they get somebody, somebody responded to one of my tweets this morning because there was a, I think it was NHL watcher that was like the Oilers, the Oilers window is closed and whatever. And I know they're just kind of trolling people. But I'm like, guys, we are one mediocre goalie away from this being the most dominant team in NHL history, seriously.
Starting point is 00:13:54 and and somebody responded, well, yeah, like, yeah, because, and they were being sarcastic, yeah, because Kemper and Aden Hill were so great. And I'm like, yo, do you understand that those two goalies are like 10,000 times better than any goalie the Oilers have dressed since like Cam Talbot took them to the second round? It's an odd comment to make. Both those goalies were legitimately good when they won the cup. And to me, with Aiden Hill sitting in Vegas and Vegas wanting to pun his ass out of town, I'd be calling. sure get them for nothing i know you got to make the salaries work you got to have some evidence that aden hill is good still well you didn't have to have evidence no you don't you're sorry was good yeah
Starting point is 00:14:32 like i'm saying to make a smart decision if you want to make a stand bowman decision you should go in that for the oilers yeah i'm going to make a stand boeman i might be all right you probably better than whatever they're doing but like i got i got some width i feel like you're you're asking for trouble just by making the ad and hill move if that's the specific guy because you don't know. You're right, Jess. Before we get too far away from that, I got to apologize to Evan Bouchard because I said he was the one trying to cover Olexeyac there.
Starting point is 00:14:58 That was actually Formington. There's another number on the side of the two there. Oh, 24, Formington does? A lot of, oh, I thought it was dry saddle. Yeah, my bad. So I can't see. Like, here's the burden of being the Edmonton Oilers, because I think some people are going to listen to this and go, come on, man.
Starting point is 00:15:14 They scored nine goals. And the story today should be the Edmonton Oilers scored nine goals with no guys. With no one. They had a first line of McDavid, Leon Pugholzhen, and then three fourth lines and they scored
Starting point is 00:15:32 nine goals. They shouldn't be able to do that. Most NHL teams won't get nine goals in a single game over the course of a season. With their best lineup. With their best lineup. And the Oilers did it. But we expect Edmonton, even if
Starting point is 00:15:48 it's Connor, Leon, and their band of Mary Men to be able to do this, what we keep waiting on as a hockey community, not just Oilers fans, what the whole hockey world keeps waiting for is can they keep the pocket of their net? And there's 82 games left. So if you want to talk about it, like those were the two preseason games, even though you got three out of four points, boy, it's crazy how much work they still have to do. And yet, they'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Dickinson's out too. And I think... Dude, everyone's out. Name a player. I think you get healthy oilers and a goalie with an 8-9-8 save percentage. Oh my God. Again, team safe percentage is 7-11. That's not a thing.
Starting point is 00:16:37 That's an almost 200-point increase. That's not a thing. Seven-11 against the Canucks. You call up any regular starting goaltender from the AHL. They will give you at least 7-Eleven. Any. Well, name one. Yes, you will. Yes, you will.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Now, 7-11. Seven, I dare say ECHL. Yeah, do you have a name? I don't know. I've seen some bad AHA goalies come up, especially for the Leaps. I've been burned with-A-None. And none of them had a 7-Eleven. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:07 Well, I mean, listen, again, maybe the Oilers should have, I jokingly said it last show, but maybe they should have gone after leaving Maryland a little harder. You're allowing more than a quarter of the shots? Yeah, yeah. No. I know. What?
Starting point is 00:17:19 I know. But I think too, like if you look at the shot counter in that, like the Oilers were out shooting Vancouver 30 to 19 at that point. Tell me what's wrong with the team defense. But that's so that first period, it ends 14 to 2 on the shot counter from the second or yeah, from the start of the second on Vancouver outshot them. And I just don't know what happens when they look like the most dominant hockey team that's ever played hockey in that first period. and then mentally they just fall off a cliff. They played with a smaller puck. I don't know what to tell.
Starting point is 00:17:52 I wonder if it's just a mental hurdle. I think you're right, Jesse. And I also maybe, you know what, there is some turnover on that roster too. Yeah. And a lot of injuries. I mean, how many teams survive losing Zach Heim and Nugent? And people underplay Jason Dickinson because of what the Oilers paid for him.
Starting point is 00:18:07 That's an important defensive Ford for them. How many teams do well when Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent Hopkins level players go out? That's two top six guys. It's difficult. What happens that the Leafs lose, Nealander and Marchenko? It's not great. Is it seven goals?
Starting point is 00:18:24 Are you going around? It's probably not seven goals against. No, but the Leafs have a better thing on like the Oilers are. Hilariously, the Leafs have better defense than someone. Are you thinking like now last night was okay? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:18:36 I think the Oilers are going to be fine. I think it'll be fine. You give them a few weeks. This is how they always start. They start like shit. They'll get rolling in November. They'll be fine. and they got three of four points.
Starting point is 00:18:48 The other thing people miss, three of four, just take it. When Babs started with the Leafs, this was their calling card. Yeah, they could score and they could not defend a lead. But then they had a season. It was actually closer to the end of his tenure where they did not give up a lead in the third period until, I think it was a late season game ironically against the Canucks. That was the infamous. Miss Nick Patan game where he's like, fine, you're fourth line center and I'm going to put you
Starting point is 00:19:19 at a position to fail. Oh, look, he failed. And who scored the goal? Josh Livo. That season, that era is just burned into my memory. Game by game basis. It's like this morning, I was thinking, Babcock has a book. And it's called, I think it's called remove all doubt.
Starting point is 00:19:42 And now it is. Leave no doubt is what it's called. Leave no doubt. and now it is have an abundance of doubt. I, again, why are we so down on a team that's got three or four? Because we just talked about the goal tent. Yeah, but that's what he said. And again, again, people are not understanding me when I say Babcox-Turming and Babcox
Starting point is 00:20:01 good on a mic. He's, after that game, he was on camera talking about, like basically alluding to and acknowledging the fact, we played two hog-shed-shed hockey games. Hog-shed. And we took three at a four. We'll take that every day. Take that every day. People are not, literacy is so much more than reading.
Starting point is 00:20:24 So when I said Babcock was charming on the mic, people said I was glazing an abuser, which I found concerning because later in that very clip, I also call him a sociopath. And if you think that's glazing, I think you need to go ahead. People don't watch beyond the first 10 seconds. You should have that.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Explain what you mean by, by like charming. He says little quips on the mic that people seem to enjoy and makes you breathe out of your nose a little faster. Oh, ha. Like he's not
Starting point is 00:21:00 what people have described behind the scenes. He's not that on camera and he's not that on the mic. You're grossly confusing these stories you've heard with the person that he presents and that's something he does very well.
Starting point is 00:21:18 And last night was another example of it. And you're seeing people fall for it. You're seeing people. This guy has a reputation that has followed him around with regard to the stories that are behind the scenes. And yet people fall in love with him over and over and over again. Do you think he's pulled that off because he does not have charm? You're simply wrong.
Starting point is 00:21:43 You're simply wrong. Mark, like, we talk about the old boys club. You could chisel Mark Messier's face into like Mount Rushmore. Who is more ingrained in hockey old boyery than Mark Messier. And he goes on this diatribe about the oiler should not have hired Mike Babcock. Wee, we, we, that's not setting off anything for you? nothing. Anyway, sorry, we're getting into two different conversations. We're getting into two different conversations. I thought Steve should clarify that.
Starting point is 00:22:21 Well, yeah, yeah. Yeah. No, but like it's, it should set off alarm bells. Well, Steve regularly defended abusive people. I mean, it's part of your brand. Oh, especially in the Trump era. Um, so I, I, I, I, anyway, all that to say, uh, it's going to be difficult for Babcock to do something that no one else has been able to do. Yes. which is teach this team that is capable and has always been capable of scoring goals to defend and to keep pucks out of their net. I think it's a bigger issue.
Starting point is 00:22:53 Like I don't think, like, I'm not on your side, Adam. I'm just like, oh, it'll be fine. I think you got to actually solve the goal tent. Well, I, at no point did I say they didn't have to solve goal tenting. Yes, you did. At no point did I say that this is going to work. I said on Wednesday, oh, you're glazing your goal to sucks. And I said last night, you asked me, Steve,
Starting point is 00:23:11 how many of those are defensive breakdowns. And I said when you have seven on the board, that means that there was some that the goalie could have stopped and then Jeff... Right. So where does the... It's going to be fine. So here's...
Starting point is 00:23:23 I got a name for you. Let me give you the stats first. Tell me who this is. Last season, 32 games. 16 wins. 10 losses, three ties. Not ties. Overtime losses.
Starting point is 00:23:36 899 save percentage. Probably could have him for league men. 29 years. old. I was about to guess James Reimer. I don't think his stats were off. It's 29. Yep. Can't find a contract this year. I don't know. That's Edmonton Oilers goalie Connor Ingram who just retired. The it's going to be fine thing is if they get goaltending. I don't have confidence that their Stan Bowman is going to do the right thing. And that's fair. And I agree. I don't think I don't think this is ever going to get fixed if that man's in charge.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Last night we were chatting and a word was used that I think is vital to this and it's trust. It's not good or bad, right? Because as we've talked about, goalies are weird and any goalie can be good on any given night. It's the weirdest phenomenon. You sometimes see it with pitchers. But once a season for basically any goalie, they'll be bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, 50 saves. Incredible week. Like, it's the weirdest thing.
Starting point is 00:24:46 I got another name, by the way. You cannot trust anyone they got. You cannot trust Jari that he's going to be good night in and night out. You cannot trust Levi until he builds it, hopefully, that he's going to be good night in and night out. Frederick Anderson, you cannot trust to play. It doesn't play hockey. You can't trust. You can't trust him to be there.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Yeah. So you have three, you have a thrandum. You cannot trust. Hey, I have a name. Give me another name. This goalie was the third goalie on the Canadian Four Nations team. Sam Montaubo? Terrible year last year.
Starting point is 00:25:26 He came to camp out of shape and found himself completely out of the Montreal Canadian's lineup. Tell me that you can't pick up the phone and go, hey, Stan, I'll give you a conditional bag of shit. I'll give you nothing and you'll give me Sam Montembow and we'll try him. But here's the problem, madam. They have three. guys.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Yeah, well, like they've, they've committed to this group of three. Man, that's crazy. Throw them on waivers. Yeah, but you see, I don't know where
Starting point is 00:25:51 your confidence in Stan Bowman doing any of that. What I'm saying is that this is not a hard solve. Stan, I don't think you do the easy thing. He's not a good general manager. No.
Starting point is 00:26:02 And I said that last show. But what I'm saying is the solve here is it's available. No, Montreal should also hold on to Montefo. So Adam's not saying Stan Bowman will do this. He's saying someone who was good
Starting point is 00:26:13 at their Job would do this. Someone could pick up the bomb. But he's not. Yeah, that's not reality. Stan Bowman's in charge. And you know what? That's a really important point.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Can't disagree with that. But I do want to point out that Montenbo for three straight years, played 40, 41, and 62 games, had 901, 903 and 902 say percentage. And remember, that was the shitty Canadians. Yeah. That was the awful Canadian. I think they are. From what I've heard, they don't want him anymore.
Starting point is 00:26:39 I think they would. I think they absolutely would. And they could leverage that for some. pretty sweet picks from the Oilers at this point. I think they tried to trade them last year. They couldn't. Fowler is coming in. Like they have,
Starting point is 00:26:51 they don't need this guy. And I think you look at, you look at what Montaubo, 29 years old, wouldn't you bet on a bounceback? And if it's not, who cares Barry him in Bakersfield then? Like,
Starting point is 00:27:04 what does it matter? It's not like he's on an enormous contract. So who cares? I guess you see how long you can, like, Again, they have three out of four points. If they're below 500 come November, this is a conversation. In terms of right now, they're just like, well, let's see if it gets better.
Starting point is 00:27:25 I have one more answer for you. And this is by far the funniest one. Okay. Third goalie, Vegas Golden Knights. I already named one Vegas Golden Knight. Who's the third goalie for the-Eleas Samsonoff? Yep. No shot.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Sammy's in the league. Okay. After all the bullshit that Vegas pulled in the spring, if they're willing to give you Ilya Samson off. You're right. Set off alarm bells. Right. That should wait.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Hey, can we have Elias Samson? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you're right. Get him out the door. All I'm saying is
Starting point is 00:27:56 back. You and one and helping you with your bags? You know, okay, so you see that, Hayden, can you put this on screen?
Starting point is 00:28:01 See this? This should say Stan. Stan. Stan, it's not that hard. Stan. You have Batman. You have Iron Man
Starting point is 00:28:11 and you have, who's the other, Superman on your team. at all times, every time. And they're all healthy right now. You're getting cross-promotion. Get a goalie. You wouldn't pay a second round pick for Sebastian Kossa this summer.
Starting point is 00:28:25 They wouldn't do it. Samsonov's currently the third goalie on San Jose. Oh, he's San Jose. Sorry. Yeah. Right, I forgot. He was on Vegas. My bad, my bad.
Starting point is 00:28:33 But even so. Call up Mike Greer. Because Mike Greer, known for getting fleeced in trades, right? I wouldn't want to do business. Mike Greer's too damn good. He does have carry. Yo, maybe you can see Kerry Price coming. He's living in Kelowna now.
Starting point is 00:28:48 He might be better. Short commute. He would for sure be better, Steve. Carrie Price hasn't played in like, what, two, three years and he'd be better? Probably can't. Still better. Still better. If Kerry Price is just standing there, I feel like half those goals don't go in.
Starting point is 00:29:01 He doesn't have to go into Butterfly. He stops that seventh one. Absolutely. What a crazy thing. He stops that seventh one. Like, listen to the bar. Yeah. The bar is total seven.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Yeah. The bar is. protect a six-goal lead comfortably. I guess they technically did protect a six-goal lead, but only just. Man, that's crazy. If you write that Montembow's on the market, I don't know. I think that's a good pickup for Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:29:29 I just don't know how they do it. I also don't think they're going to. Yeah. Because I don't think St. Bowman does anything. The only goalie move the Oilers could do that makes any real sense is they somehow involve Jari. and like who who wants well you're going to have to attach something nice to that right and that's have anything nice remaining i don't know like could you get somebody interested in ike howard
Starting point is 00:29:53 uh or something like that i don't know holy moly like i don't know that's a major piece for you like can you can you flip with i mean lankan it look like shit but can you get lankin it out of vancouver um that's also a long-term deal they're only in the third they don't have demco so they need somebody to play goal. Yeah, but Jari could play goal for them and that would get them closer to their goal of getting the first overall pick. Yeah. Adam's cooking. Like no matter, what if they're trying to be bad? No matter how good the vibes are in Vancouver, it's completely unacceptable that they have already two points and almost had four. That's right. That is not accomplishing your goals. I want-Mani-Mal-Hotra has to be stopped. Yeah, please, and Paul Carter, but just tone it down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:30:34 Yeah, you know what? I think that's a healthy scratch. All, all I'm saying is I don't think, and This is going to be a running theme throughout the show. All you have in the first week is the information in front of you. And you need to overreact to it because of what you have. But at the same time, the season is measured in weeks and months, not games. I think the Oilers will be fine. I still think they're going to be close to winning the division. And I think there's plenty of overreact.
Starting point is 00:31:04 And Jesse, you're absolutely right. I'm saying these solves are easy. You're saying for Stan Bowman, they're not. And you win the day. That is true. Stan doesn't get goal tending. End of story. I think the Edmonton Oilers could conceivably win the cup and be the first cup winner in recent memory that no one even bothers trying to replicate. Like everyone, it's a big copycat. We can't.
Starting point is 00:31:27 You can't. That's the thing. Simply have McDavid and Drysidal. Exactly. I'm not saying no one would want to. I'm just saying it's everyone is it very least smart enough to acknowledge. It's simply impossible to pull that off. And you have to remember that this is a team that got to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final with these people dressed in the lineup.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Cal Pickard and Stuart Skinner. Cody Cici. Yep. Like, what are we doing here, guys? You think that the, you guys are doubting the Oilers? Those three people alone. They had to pull Stuart Skinner and go, please, Calvin Pickard, save us against the Vancouver Canucks. Calvin Pickard, bro.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Who got them through the second round. People forget, man. Like this this team is going to be just fine. I don't think Babcock's going to stop them. I think he just let, he should let them be what they are, which is, just let them be what they are. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:32:19 He's good at letting a sleeping dog lie for sure. Yeah, but he should. No, no shot. I can't do a good Bob Cole, but okay, hockey fans, we have some breaking news. I'm just getting word that it's happening. The next generation is officially arrived. The young guys aren't the future anymore.
Starting point is 00:32:36 They're showing up alongside some of the biggest names in hockey, not just on the ice, but in Tim Horton's new NHL hockey cards. The cards are back, and honestly, they look better than ever. And let's open some damn cards up. The commercials for these on TV have been hilarious too,
Starting point is 00:32:51 where they're chirping each other. Oh, yeah, real good commercials. Hayden actually, during the Montreal game, he was like, man, that's actually a really good commercial. Here we go. I got a collector's item, because this is William Eklund on the Sharks. noted Steve Dangle
Starting point is 00:33:07 podcast guest we have an insert this is sensational sallies Jesper Brott and Leon Dries He doesn't
Starting point is 00:33:18 You don't even need to say the last name We all know who that is I got former duck Trevor Zegris Matthew Barzal And then I have Adams' favorite player
Starting point is 00:33:29 Morgan Riley Hey There you go We got a leaf And we are all on the hunt for the one of 87 Sydney Crosby card, are we not? We are. And that's what's so cool about it.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Is there something really good to search out? So get to Tim's, get your pack, and see who you pull. Starting point is 00:34:27 our beloved Matthew Nyes. And a fabulous. hilarious. Amazing and a debut worth complimenting in Columbus. You know, they kind of live tweeted his journey to Columbus. And each and every time people sort of did remark that he looked a little shell-shocked. And I don't think it was because he was necessarily disappointed to be in Columbus, which is how some people would frame it. I would frame it as he was shell-shocked.
Starting point is 00:34:52 He got traded. And any time players talk about getting traded, they talk about how shocking it is. Even if it's been rumored for months, when it actually happens, you realize you have to uproot your life. Maybe you've got a property, you got a lease to get out of, you've got to get your shit and move and all this stuff. And it happens. It's like, oh, you got traded. The plane tickets are in your email account. Get on it in an hour.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Like, that's how they do it, right? You're gone. You're fucking gone. And the team ships your equipment to the other team. Let me throw a wrench in there. You got a dog? Or Machenko with his cat. Did you see that?
Starting point is 00:35:27 No, I did. He stepped off a plane, and I'm going to get to this, Marchenko was on the plane with Dan Milstein, and apparently his cat and his girlfriend, and he was walking around the hotel lobby with his cat. Oh, so he brought the cat on the PJ? Yeah. So that's what you can do.
Starting point is 00:35:40 I mean, when you sign for $12 million a year, you know. But Matthew Nyes went in and crushed it last night. Absolutely went in and crushed it. No shock. And I think what we need to do, because, like, you know, Twitter's going to always be adversarial. That's the way it's set up. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:35:58 But I know what you're going to say. When a good trade happens, it's beneficial for both teams. Yeah, that's the idea of a trade. No. No, no, I'm just telling you what it is. Sure. That's the thing. I'm not asking Twitter to change its stripes.
Starting point is 00:36:10 It is what it is. Oh, no. But what I'm going to tell you. It's a deal involving the Leafs. They're going to be asshole. What I'm telling you is that I think that this fit could be phenomenal for both sides. And I'm thrilled for Matthew Nyes and I'll always root for that guy. That was 16,
Starting point is 00:36:28 minutes of ice time. He scores two goals. They're fucking rock star goals. He's wearing red, white, and blue. I mean, that's all he does. He doesn't score shit goals. Love it. Love it for him. Yeah. I love it from him. And one of them was assisted by Emil Andre. That was, who never even played for the Leafs. Like just cherry on top. He played one game at home. One. In preseason. In preseason. And I was there. I was going to say, I can say, I can say, I saw him, Andres only home leaf game. That is a Steve Angles game. It's not a real game.
Starting point is 00:37:03 Yeah, it does. No. Yes, it does. And 100% does. Matthew guys could have had a hat trick. Could have had a trick. Because he was stopped on the breakaway as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:14 But lack of hands. Lack of dangles, I should say. On the, on the breakaway there. We, yeah, we dodged a couple bullets there, Jesse. We almost had a nice hat trick. Could have had a Nick Robertson hat trick. Could have fring off. I think Fantilly and him are like they have a great connection and that's going to be special.
Starting point is 00:37:33 Of course. I don't know if the team's good enough to make the playoffs. Like not all of a sudden, Columbus is making the Metro top three or whatever. But I think like they have a good future. I agree with you. And you know what's lost in all this guys is the fact that like everybody was like trying to dunk on the Leafs last night, not realizing that Columbus is doing the Leafs of favor by beating up on a division rival.
Starting point is 00:37:54 It was Buffalo that they were playing. Matthew Nyes did us a huge solid. Cool. And the comments from Zach Wrenski on the NHL network about Nyes, great having him here. Going against him was always tough. I'm happy he's on our side. I think he'll be a great fit.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Big body. He plays hard. Two goals, three points. Great addition to the lineup. It's definitely early. But I like what he brings to our team. And here's the thing about Columbus that's always got me is that that this is not going to go over well with Blue Jackets fans, but I don't care.
Starting point is 00:38:25 That dressing room always seems dead. there's never a lot. I never feel a ton of positive energy emanating out of that group, no matter what era we're talking about. I can remember back, even in the Torts era where they got the furthest they ever got, right? Second round, remember they beat Tampa in that unbelievable comeback series?
Starting point is 00:38:42 They felt like they had an energy back then. Even that season, the players had to take John Tortorella aside and tell him to calm down. Oh, Brandon Dubinsky. Yeah. And there was Cam Atkinson, Dubinsky, Boone Jenner. Like, there was some real great character people on that team.
Starting point is 00:38:56 Aaron, Bob. But there was always this heaviness about the blue jackets. And I think now you put Nyes, who's 24, Fantility's what, 22, 21? He's young. These guys are going to be rock stars there. In one of, from what, from what I keep hearing, like a hidden gem city to live in, young, university focus. I was so impressed when I went there for the All-Star game.
Starting point is 00:39:18 I was so impressed. And people are like all, like, it's hilarious because there's people who have never been to Ohio, who shit on Ohio. I've been to Ohio many times. And there are parts of all. Ohio that are rough, parts of Ontario that are rough, let's be honest. But Columbus is known as like a great place to live and a cheap place to live and a fun place to live. And I don't, I think, I look at this and I go, this is, they cooked with this trade and good for them. And I, I'm, I think that this is a
Starting point is 00:39:45 great start, but I'm with you, Jesse. I don't think this is a playoff team. Last night was really impressive because I was watching the broadcast and at the beginning of the game, they go over, like, all the injuries and everything Columbus is dealing with. And there's, They said how Fabro's out, Severson's out, and Proveralver out. So you got three really important defensemen on your back end. That's half your defense just chopped and gone. And they played a really solid game. They're able to just do enough to get by Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:40:13 And they provide so many different dynamics throughout their lineup because, like, Werensky's back there providing offense and great defense. And then the other guys, they had to put in the defense corps, like they did a great job. And the top line with Fantilian Nyes, they're such good, like, power. forward's providing scoring and then you have a guy like Matthew Olivier who when Metza goes to net does the well Matthew Lively puts the fuck in the net met the Metsa comes and taps him he beats the brakes off his face and you're like okay I see what you're building here you got Olivier who can provide some offense too like don't is he got 15 goal guy yeah double
Starting point is 00:40:46 digit like I can see Olivia putting up 20 like at some point his career I mean because they don't score it was playing on the second line last night it's pretty good and then so you have like a good offensive line first line now you throw nyes in there really great offense from your defense if you can all a defense that's good you got a guy who's just gonna beat the brakes off of anybody and do some dirty shit and livié and then if you can just solve like the other ends of the lineup like there's a really good core in columbus i think still a lot needs to go right yes but everything has to be perfect yeah but i think it's cool too that you've got a power forward like nize who's a unicorn and a power
Starting point is 00:41:23 forward like olivier who's a unicorn on line one and two how many teams can say that That's not fun. No. I mean, I think the only other team that I could think that has that kind of body presence is maybe the Capitals
Starting point is 00:41:32 in terms of just gigantic people. Panthers? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, at least Matthew Nye's scores, man, Brady Kachuk, stat light.
Starting point is 00:41:42 I haven't seen it. He's in a fight every night. It's the same as it was in the playoffs last year. 18 minutes a night, zero anything else. And they're two and off. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:41:51 And Adam, Nize's quote after the game was, this is a damn fun locker room to be in. Good. That's what I'm talking. about. That's what I'm talking about. So you responded to what you were saying. Well, and that's what I was saying before. Yeah, yeah, totally. I think that's fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:42:05 And I, again, I think certain trades, people are like who won, who won, who won. And it's always the default is whoever got the best trade. And I think, well, we talked about on Wednesday, it was about fit. My thing with Matthew Nyes going into the preseason and talking about it here and late last season was never about is Matthew Nye's a bad player. He's in a phenomenal player. Matthew Nyes did not fit with what the Leafs needed, so they traded him for someone who did. Right. And I think the early returns on Marchenko are pretty great, even though he isn't scored. He looks great.
Starting point is 00:42:37 But you look at the ice, the way it tilts when Matthews and him are on it. I'm like, damn, that's great. That's a lot better than I think what Nyes and Matthews would have been able to do together. Look what Niz and Fantili have done. Fantastic. We often talked about Nyes not being able to find Matthews.
Starting point is 00:42:51 It's Fantilli's job to find Nyes. and that's what it should be. Yeah. This is the blue jackets lineup that they had out last night. Like I'm talking about like the pieces. Like Lomburg. Oh, they got Ntushkin too, right. I forgot.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Lomburg was really good last night too on a fourth line roll. But like you need to solve the middle. Yeah. Fantilli is great. And then you got like three third line centers. Didn't Dayton Hines score last night though? He did. Did he?
Starting point is 00:43:16 Yeah. Like this isn't bad. It's also not good. but there's pieces like there's no I don't look at this I don't look at this and go this line's gonna get caved I just like if you need a goal
Starting point is 00:43:33 what are you sending out there I'll say that or you're down two in a game like you know you know what I mean the fact that Marchenko scored as much as he did with Varankov regularly playing with him is a miracle it's a miracle I love Varankov for what he does along the boards but if you've ever seen him skate in open country
Starting point is 00:43:50 it wasn't a fit wasn't a fit. And I think you look at, I think about though, Varankov and Natuskin, how big those boys are. So that's Nyes on 1, Olivier 2,
Starting point is 00:44:00 Natuskin 3 and Varankov 4. They're large. Those are big boys. You get that team into the playoffs with some good Setterman, as Jesse pointed out. That's not going to be a fun night. There's something there.
Starting point is 00:44:10 Yep. Like, and you know, you're working with something good. You talked about their size and like kind of how grinding they can be if they get to the playoffs. You know what they remind me of?
Starting point is 00:44:21 The last group of blue jackets who got to the playoffs honestly yeah they do just grindy and mean that's their identity but but steve the difference i think would be and and and and you're not wrong that the fact is they lacked the high end talent but they had one guy and his name was artemmy panard yeah and they've got one guy in his name is adam fantilly they need kent johnson to take a step this year right they need a lot they need some of their other rookies to come up and start performing and the fantilly like high end out. He still needs to prove that. Yeah, he's like a 59. 59. 59. But it's a team that doesn't score. Yeah. Let's, let's, uh, let's see it from
Starting point is 00:45:00 Fantilly. I agree. Yeah. I agree. Um, moving on to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gentlemen, I want to talk, I want to give you a thesis. Can I present a thesis? And I want to know what you guys think of this. Go for it. Because I was pretty pumped about the way the Leafs lost on Tuesday of the Canadian. Also, you made up the, uh, high-end goal last night. Did not score. Oh, he didn't score. He got a No, no goal. I know that. He was dressed. That's awesome. And no points.
Starting point is 00:45:28 You know what? I did see him play, though. I saw him at least take a shift. Did he have one called back? I thought he had a goal. Anyway, that's funny. It doesn't matter. I was making dinner for my kid.
Starting point is 00:45:39 And I was, you know, I was. And I saw Denton Hine and I was like, hey. Cillinger, Nyes, Fantilli, Nyes, Monaghan, Olivia. You know what? I also have kids. And I also hallucinated the same Denton Hyatt. Did you actually? No.
Starting point is 00:45:53 You know, you could have helped me out there. You could have been a good friend there. You know? No, absolutely not. You could have been a good friend, but no. He's leaving me flapping in the wind, this asshole. I'm the non-kid person who can throw on the quad box. Now, Leaves and Islanders.
Starting point is 00:46:11 So I was pumped about the way the Leafs lost to the Canadians. Why, number one, the amount of turnover in the lineup. Number two, the Montreal Canadians are a legitimate cut. threat and the Leafs could have won the game. Should they have won the game? No, did they deserve to win the game? No, but they could have. And that is sometimes all that fucking matters, right?
Starting point is 00:46:30 And so my thesis is this, gentlemen. Are you ready? University professor Adam Wilde here. We are so used to the top six doing everything in Toronto that when they don't, we believe it's time to panic. Now, let me back my thesis. Okay, okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:46:52 Marchenko only has a secondary assist. Matthews only has four shots through two games. Tavaris, Neelander, McKenna looked better in game two, but were outchanced 19 to three by the aisles when they were on the ice. Not great. And I think the Gavin McKenna expected goals for was like at a 5% or something. If Nealander converts on that, that number instantly fucking changes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:13 And remember, publicly available data is not the same as privately available data. I have to hammer this. Look at Willie's face. He knows he blew it. And you know what happened? What? The third line carried them. Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:26 You know what happens on good teams? And especially on great teams. When the top guys do not have it, the third and fourth line guys step up. I'm going to point you to somebody last year on the Carolina Hurricanes who had a dog shit start. Do you know what I'm talking about? A bad start. Svetnikov. Svachnikov.
Starting point is 00:47:45 Do you know how bad it was? It was very, very bad. He went completely scoreless. Zero goals, zero assists, zero points, Brady Kachuk level stats. Yes. Through his first eight games. Yeah, that's pretty bad. He was demoted to the fourth line, and he finished the season with 70 points.
Starting point is 00:48:03 Wow. In 79 games. He had another 11 in the playoffs. And what happened in Carolina last year? They won the cup. Now, I am not suggesting for a second that the Leafs are a cup threat. I think they're a playoff threat. I don't think they're a cup threat.
Starting point is 00:48:17 But when was the last time the Leafs' third line carried them to anything since Nazam-Cadry was traded? I'd say Ryan O'Reilly, and even that was brief. That's exactly right. It was like a quarter of a season. Ryan O'Reilly, Matthew Nyes, Nolich.
Starting point is 00:48:36 That was a great line. That was a great line. I miss it. I miss it. I'm not saying the Leafs Territory. O'Reilly was a good leaf. He was. He was very good. When he wasn't injured.
Starting point is 00:48:43 Yeah. For that like two months, the month stretch. Now, the idea that you can deduce anything of long-term value to two games as we found out with the Oilers, obviously. You know what's funny? I think you're thinking about Nick Folino. Am I? Yeah. Did O'Reilly not get hurt? I don't think so. No, no. Yeah, O'Reilly was fine. Nick Filino also a good leaf.
Starting point is 00:49:00 Fulio. Until he got hurt. Yeah, I'm confused. That bag of re-sucked. But I'm mad at I'm watching his kids hallucinating. That's right. Dan Hinen. Dan Hinen. Twitter. Leaf legend. Hat trick. Especially after that, you know, so you've got a top six that's got a rookie on it. Okay, brand new rookie who's 160 pounds. You have a guy who suited up for the Leafs in his first game 12 hours after stepping off the plane at 2 a.m.
Starting point is 00:49:30 With his cat, his girlfriend, and his agent, had to get immigration sorted out, wasn't sure if he'd be in the lineup, couldn't practice with the team. Had to get permission from the government to play. So instead of all of us, excuse the term, pissing all over our nuts about the top six. Can we talk about the good thing, which is a homegrown leaf draft pick in his second season,
Starting point is 00:49:55 who I told you all last season, the biggest compliment you can give this player is he survived Craig Barubei and stayed in the lineup. Easton Cowan. Yep. And the third line with Paul and Sizzins. I had multiple people when the nice trade was breaking in the few hours between the original Elliott tweet and the finalization. of the deal. I had multiple people tell me the Blue Jackets asked for Easton Cowan, and the Leafs told him the pound sand. They didn't want to get rid of this player. He was great by the end of last season, won the Calder Cup, looked good in camp, and here he is through two games.
Starting point is 00:50:35 He's been fantastic. One thing I said after the Montreal game is I wanted more out of the bottom six. I just didn't love it. The fourth line didn't do anything particularly memorable. The third line, there was some shifting back and forth with McKenna and Cowan. It was just kind of meh. But Cowan, when he got promoted, ended up getting a point. In this game, you're right. Like the top six was a little ho-hum. They weren't great. They didn't have the greatest night. The third line was utterly dominant. And the fourth line was what I have been begging for the fourth line to be, which is just be unpleasant to play against. just be a horrible time.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Yep. Brandon Duhame. Buddy. Teddy Blugher had a good game, but Brandon Duhame. Do you think people are going to buy Brandon New Ham jerseys in the first two months of this year.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Oh yeah. This guy's going to be fan favorite here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He, motor, motor, doesn't stop. He could have had a goal. Sissons could have had two.
Starting point is 00:51:37 11 goal getter, Colton Sizzins. Yeah. Paul looked very effective, not necessarily a scoring threat, but just very effective. And Cowan did score. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:51:47 Golden and an assist. The bottom six in Carolina lifted them certain games in the playoffs last year. The bottom six in Florida, especially that third line, Luster Ryan and Marchand Lundell. Turn the whole series around against the Leafs. And the entire playoffs. They were the incredible. I'm not saying the Leafs have that,
Starting point is 00:52:08 but I've been really impressed with that line, guys. And I think we need to remember that that's how it's supposed to be. The Leafs couldn't have it that way, because they made, I will maintain they needed to trade Codry. Cadry got himself traded with the double suspensions in the playoffs. And by the way, got suspended the next year in the playoffs too in Colorado. Yeah, the value. Dubus didn't need to make a shitty trade.
Starting point is 00:52:29 Yes. And what Dubus did was he was like, I'm going to try to figure out my right side and I'm going to take a project center. Terrible idea. You have a rover defenseman in Tyson Berry. I was about to say it's a project defenseman. And Alex Kerfoot, who turned out to be, you know, at best a fourth line. or a third line winger. No, Adam, that's a top line right wing.
Starting point is 00:52:50 I know. The Leafs had to build their team that way because the amount of money at the top and the flat cap and the COVID. Now they don't. Can we take a minute and just enjoy the fact that the third line lifted them to a victory
Starting point is 00:53:03 in a game that they should have won? Absolutely. Absolutely. That, like, I keep pounding the drum that in terms of talent, the NHL is in such a good place. Like we keep talking about Celebrini, Bader's a cap.
Starting point is 00:53:17 and now and all that. That Leifes Islanders game featured 18-year-old Gavin McKenna, 19-year-old Matthew Schaefer, 19-year-old Victor Eklund, I think 21-year-old Kalam Ritchie,
Starting point is 00:53:30 21, I think, year-old Easton-Kalwin. This is great. It's great. We're in a golden age of talent. And young talent and fun talent. Young talent, fun talent, high-octane talent,
Starting point is 00:53:45 lots of goals. It's good. And it's funny. Cowan, we've had to adjust how our brains work with Easton Cowan because I think for,
Starting point is 00:54:00 especially when the season began last year, he was almost, since he's been drafted, he's been cannon fodder. He was this late first round pick that. People were like, who the fuck is that? Off the board, who is that?
Starting point is 00:54:13 Oh, looks like he actually projects to be pretty good, that'll be great value when we trade him. For Braden Chen. For, yeah, for some older guy because we're a contender. And then they were not, or forget contender, but going for it, at least pretending to be a contender. I think they have a term for that, but they were pretending to be a contender and didn't
Starting point is 00:54:40 start very well. And again, it wasn't like, oh yeah, this guy's a bust. It was like, this is hurting his value. Now we're slowly coming around to the fact. Wait a minute. By gum, this guy might help the Toronto Maple Leafs win hockey games. He's great. He's everything I want in a hockey player, honestly.
Starting point is 00:55:00 He's dogged and determined and there's some skill there too. Good sense. He's a smart player. I'm into it, man. Yeah, but Steve Matthews didn't score. Listen, it is indeed concerning. Is it? Is it concerning?
Starting point is 00:55:19 Is it actually concerning? It's concerning, but I'm not concerned. Does that make sense? Like, if this continues... Then it's concerning. Then it's concerning. It is Friday, October 2nd. Is it concerning?
Starting point is 00:55:31 Six periods of high. I have a hard time getting too worked up. Jesse, are you concerned? No. No, no, no. I like the Easton Cowan stuff is a lot of fun. I think we're underrating how much of an impact the Calder Cup run had on this player.
Starting point is 00:55:46 I think playing with a bunch of pros, grown men all spring long, and the fact that he was point a game and was like a star on that Marley's team, helping them win the Calder Cup, I think was great for his development curve. And clearly coming into this season, he's taken a really big leap in what he is as a player currently. And I think he's raised his ceiling on what he can be as an NHLer. Oh, big time.
Starting point is 00:56:13 Just the way he's under camp and how he's impressed there, And then these couple games he's played, we all kind of thought he'd be middle six. And I think now, like, there's a top line potential here where he could put up a ton of points in the NHL. Because he has a motor, like, I haven't seen a long time out of a player. That's why at the beginning of the preseason, I said, what about him instead of Nyes and next to Matthews? I think the Hyman role. And I don't think that now, but I'll continue. Yeah, I think that's where we'd get into trouble.
Starting point is 00:56:40 I think your point about, like, hey, the third line can do things. I think we need a... Eastern Cowan's got to be a third-line player for right now because it's good to have three lines that can do stuff. You're talking about the Hurricanes that... I would say the Hurricanes is more than middle six because Jackson, Blake Hall and Stankov, and they were the second line,
Starting point is 00:56:58 and that's the line of the best line in the play last year. I wouldn't say it's their bottom six. Okay, and Florida as an example. Yeah, Florida is the great example. But if the Leafs build three lines that are now dominant in the fourth line, just whatever they can contribute to, like Cowan can provide a whole other thing for that third line.
Starting point is 00:57:15 So I would just leave him there and I saw the lines for at practice today it looks like they're sticking with what they have. Let McKenna just figure out be a mess right now. He hasn't had two good games.
Starting point is 00:57:26 But that's okay. But there was improvement against the Islanders was not? Yeah, improvement. Yeah, but like there hasn't been that connection with Tavares and Willie and McKenna yet, but I think that's fine
Starting point is 00:57:35 because Cowan's been so dominant on third line. I would be afraid to mess with it. I think it's good. Jesse, to that point, I think you make it an awesome point and I want to fucking emphasize this.
Starting point is 00:57:44 I'm so frustrated because people are like, well, you got to get them up in the top six. No, you don't. What if we just have
Starting point is 00:57:51 a good thing there and we leave that and then Willie Tavar's and McKenna can just figure out their issues. Matthews makes, how much,
Starting point is 00:57:59 12 and a half? 13. 13, 25. Marchenko is going to make 12 and a half. Nealander makes 11. and a half. Tavar is at four. Okay?
Starting point is 00:58:07 All right. They will figure that out. They're paid to fucking do that. You don't move a great asset like that third line. And, well, it simply can't go on that the second line, which was electric, outrageous in the preseason.
Starting point is 00:58:25 Well, they've had two bad games. Better break them up. Guys, holy shit. It's okay. Hold, no, it's not okay. Holy fucking shit. Relax. Let them figure it out.
Starting point is 00:58:35 Tavares looks a bit slow. He lost somebody on a goal on Monday night. Remember, he lost his man? And I'm like, yeah. Took a penalty for being alive. Yes, against the Islanders. There's a lot of those. I don't know what that was.
Starting point is 00:58:46 Relax. Let me give you one. Let me give you one. A player I was very concerned about. He sang me a lullaby on Wednesday. And he told me everything's fine, Stephen. Is it 4-4? Anthony Stollers.
Starting point is 00:59:03 Oh, man, was he great. He was great. Anthony Stoller. Yeah, we'll get to Riley in a second. Anthony Stoll. Yes. Yes. That's the.
Starting point is 00:59:15 Tone, welcome back, Tony. Welcome back Stoli. Like, great game. I wanted the shoutout for him. It's okay. That was a great game from Stolars. Great game. I never really felt like the Leafs were in jeopardy of losing.
Starting point is 00:59:31 Somebody tweeted it, and I forget who, I think it was Jake B. Leaves tweeted. And he said when he's healthy and on, there aren't a lot of goalies better than Stollers. And if you're outside of this market, outside of this market, people will be like, that's Leaf fans, shut the fuck up, whatever. This guy's actually phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:59:47 It's just he's never healthy. They had the best goaltending duo in the league two years ago. He had the best safe percentage in the league two years running. Have you bumped your head? His problem is staying in that frigging crease. Right? And he took a pretty hard run. And I'm like, well, but you know what the Leafs did?
Starting point is 01:00:06 Yep. Call it back you Bob and he's fine. You know what the Leafs did? What? They beat the shit out of the guy that did that. I appreciated that. Do you notice that everybody that'd even whispered, Goalie near the Leafs NED.
Starting point is 01:00:17 Everybody's grabbing them. Good, great. That's a big change too. Good, great. The lines today, Adam, you're yelling at no one because Jim Hiller listened. Good. He's not messing with the forward group. Duane Bluger grew as the fourth line.
Starting point is 01:00:29 Cowan Paul Sizzins is the third line. The change we have on D today at practice, McCabe Tanev, Riley Radish, O'EL Stecher. Well, that was sort of the... They flipped. I mean, there's no change. It's just one of them is now the top pair. McCabe 10 have line one, but everybody is with who they are with. I want them to get Blankenberg in against Nashville next week,
Starting point is 01:00:51 not only because it's his old team because they're playing them Tuesday, but I also think you got to get him into a game here soon. And I want to know, no disrespect to OEL Stetcher, but I think Blankenberg's more useful to them up and down that lineup. If like a McCabe goes out with a skate cut, then Stetcher would be. Well, give Blankenberg a chance to play against his former team. Yeah. I think that's fun.
Starting point is 01:01:13 Riley. That keep. Yep. On the power play, no less. Daddy. Daddy. That got me off my cow. I almost swore in front of my kid. That was nuts.
Starting point is 01:01:28 You so rarely see something like that. From him too. Bad it, well, from anybody, man. Like that's a hard clearing attempt batted down on the backhand with a stick. Sometimes you see a guy, actually Riley a few years ago, like, jump up and get it with their hand or their skate or like block it with their body. To have the friggin' ninja focus to nail it down like he did and then immediately turn it into a goal, immediately turn it into offense.
Starting point is 01:02:01 Jack Rozovic settling down uncooperative puck. And then Easton Cowan just Johnny on the spot, I was hot and bothered. And guess what? It's the third line on the power play. They got it done two ways. Yeah, kind of. They did it five on five and they did it on the power play. And, and, you know, I don't know, we've given a ton of credit to Easton Cowan.
Starting point is 01:02:23 Colton Sisons has looked really, really good. Sorry, one more thing on the second goal. Yeah. The celebration, because Cowan scored. McKenna's the first in to hug him. And then Nick Paul is the third one in. And you see on his face, he's like, this is a crazy picture. And they all disappeared under the arms of Nick Paul.
Starting point is 01:02:42 Yeah. It's the future of the Leafs and me. also the future. Yeah. We are the same. I think that, you know, when you look at the way the Leafs have won and it's been sloppy, you know, you look at the way that they're trying to transition through the neutral zone guys, they're racing guys up the boards.
Starting point is 01:03:01 And you're seeing pucks go behind players. You're seeing like even guys like Chris Tannaf missing passes they would never miss. Give it 10, 15 games to organize. Look at how disastrous everybody's play has been across the league. Radish looked better. Radish looked better. So let's talk Radish Riley. Jesse.
Starting point is 01:03:18 They had a bad game against Montreal. What did you think Wednesday night against the Islanders, a less good team? I don't think, like I'm still not happy with Radish's game right now. Like I don't think it's been that great. On the power play, I know he's trying. The shots he did take, I thought, right into the chest. Like, we're firing bombs. It's good.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Wasn't really effective there. he hasn't they haven't trusted him to play short-handed yet so it's not even like he's playing in all facets of the game I would like to see more from Rattish disappointed so far
Starting point is 01:03:54 in two games that's fair I as the game went on he was shooting it more and you're right like were they particularly dangerous shots I'm sort of on the side
Starting point is 01:04:03 of just shoot it just shoot just shoot and take a slap shot we have you because you vaporize Pox yeah I
Starting point is 01:04:13 I'd like to see it. You know, like I'm going to get antsy if we're like four games in and I haven't seen Rattish provide some offense. Right. That's what we brought you here to do. Totally. And then if you're not doing the offense side of it, then you got to be playing great defense.
Starting point is 01:04:27 And they haven't been trusting him to play in those high danger situations because they do have McAv and Tannis to do that stuff. But you also got to contribute. And I know he did play, I believe, the most minutes out of any defensemen, but the minutes were pretty even. Yeah. It was like 23 for him and like. Well, she's,
Starting point is 01:04:43 wasn't it, Schaefer played 27 minutes? And then, like, the highest leaf was like 20. Yeah, it's crazy. Schaefer is, can we just,
Starting point is 01:04:50 he is that team. He's insane. He's so good. And I, I don't know how that team, like Barzell is a great player, but. That's a seventh,
Starting point is 01:04:58 eighth division finishing team. Dude, I can't believe they got close to the playoffs. They're goaltending and they're, and Matthew Schaefer are that team. I'm not trying to insult the rest of the islanders. When Matthew Schaefer is on the ice, he's the only player.
Starting point is 01:05:12 Yeah. You know what I mean? I have to say like, Suzuki or Suzuki, Sizicus, Sizicus, Susicus and Duclair, I thought had some really good moments, but like listen to those names. I'm not watching for those two. Yeah, like, Paul Miery had like a spinnerama. I'm like, wow, he's like 38.
Starting point is 01:05:27 Cool. I'm probably didn't break some. I'm watching for Matthew Schaefer. Yeah. Because he's absolutely insane. Well, because he shot, didn't he shoot up, like he carried the puck up, shot it and then followed up his own rebound. He did everything.
Starting point is 01:05:38 He did everything. He plays. Surround this man. Like I like to play defense in. video games, like be a pro. And does anyone play defense in video games? No, that's stupid. He plays defense
Starting point is 01:05:50 in real life the way I do in video games where I'm the asshole defenseman who shoots and then chases after my own rebound because it's more fun. Except he does it and doesn't screw up the play and actually gives his team a chance to win. He does it well. Dude, he's great.
Starting point is 01:06:07 He's going to win a Norris one year, if not this year. I mean, it's going to be hard because I'm not entirely convinced on the team. Like, in order for them to have any shot, any shot, Sorokin's got to be elite. And he is. He's also on my fantasy team, so he is elite. He only allowed two goals. The second one was not good.
Starting point is 01:06:33 That's fair. That's fair. The Time on Ice thing I was talking about, just to throw that out there. Radish played 2036. Tanev played 20, McCabe played 2019, Riley played 1949. So they're splitting the time pretty evenly between those top four guys. And that makes sense.
Starting point is 01:06:50 Yep. I will feed into Adams' agenda. You know who puts Matthias Machelli out in the final minute when they need a goal? Dog shit team. Last year's Leafs and this year's Islanders. Why did anybody, and there were. There are people arguing this in Leafs Nation. Stats people.
Starting point is 01:07:14 Sure. People who use math. And they're like, Leifes are really going to regret losing Matthias Michelli. Are you fucking kidding? I don't love losing them for nothing. I don't give it shit. I'll buy.
Starting point is 01:07:24 I don't love losing that. Yo, here's the deal, man. That guy, attitude, attitude, attitude. I don't need that shit in my dressing room. You don't want to play. You don't want to come and play. And then it takes him being scratched to nine straight times in December to come back and go, actually, I'm quite talented because that's the thing.
Starting point is 01:07:41 with Matias Machelli, he's extremely talented. Sure. That's a mentality issue. End of story. How about this? Your bread and butter is playmaking. Go somewhere with goal scores. He went where they offered him a contract, Steve.
Starting point is 01:07:56 That's tough. Years ago, there was Marley who signed with, he looked primed to make the Leafs or some other. NHL team. And he opted to as a free agent, not sign with the Leafs. And he went and signed with the one of the deepest teams in the national hockey league. And someone from the Leafs organization confronted him. It was just like, what are you doing? Yeah. Well, like what, like not someone in charge of signing players. He was like, what are you doing? And that guy, uh, he never made it. And guess what? He never, he never made it. When, when Barzal comes back, because he's, he can score, but he's a, he's a,
Starting point is 01:08:41 He's a ditcher too. He's, what are they going to do past to each other? He's passed first. This is what I'm saying. Well, I don't, Matthew Darsh also needs to kind of take a step back here and go, what am I doing with this roster?
Starting point is 01:08:53 Like, I thought there was going to be, the middle of a rebuild, right? Are they? Why do they keep signing mid guys then? I don't think, signing Pete DeBore is not something you do mid rebuild. I don't think their expectations should be,
Starting point is 01:09:05 we're going to go on a deep run this year. So you think last year they were just kind of surprised by it and they went with it? And then this year, kind of expecting. No, like, last year, I don't think they expect to go on the front of them. They didn't. They were shocked. They were shocked.
Starting point is 01:09:16 They were trade deadline. They got Braden Shen. They got Carson Susie. Mm-hmm. They got older. I think, right. They were, at the beginning of the season, they were surprised by how good they were. And now we may very quickly live in a world where they're surprised by how much it's not working out.
Starting point is 01:09:38 But it's very early. Do they feel a little bit? Remember the Nashville Predators when they went on that crazy run made me look like an idiot? And they were like, but they got to the playoffs and were like, but they're actually still, like defensively they were very solid that year. They couldn't score. They weren't very good. No, they were getting like memorable performances from Colton Sissons. Yes.
Starting point is 01:09:58 And he for sure would. Pontesoburg. Yeah. And Michael McCarran. Wait, which run are we talking about the 2324 run where they go on? Oh, I'm talking about the Stanley Cup run. Oh, no, I'm not talking about that. Oh, the U2 run.
Starting point is 01:10:10 Yeah. I think Sison is. might still have been on the team then. It doesn't really matter though. My point is, you know, they go to the Vancouver, they take the Canucks to seven or six games and they're getting, the Canucks are limited to like 12 shots a game. Hey, deny, that's the first time we started streaming. It's the worst hockey we've ever watched our life. But the, I almost feel like the Islanders are stuck in that.
Starting point is 01:10:32 I don't know what they are. I don't know what they are. That's the National Predators. They got some young pieces. Like, there's great reason to be optimistic. for their future. But yeah, I don't really know what they are or what they aspire to be. Yeah. I don't know either. And I think I think they kind of found out what they were. You're right that they did buy in the January through March period in thinking that they were a little
Starting point is 01:10:57 better. And I think they kind of got shown their cards by the end of it. And they're like, okay, this isn't a playoff team. And now we have to regroup. Yeah. And I think I think now it's like, okay, well, are you going to, what are you going to do with JG Padjo? What are you going to do with, like, again, two games. They're probably only one game. Stanley DeAngelo's quite the experience, huh? Logan Stanley? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:22 I mean, he missed training. No, no, but Stanley with DeAngelo. Fellas. Again, I think that's a great video game pair. That's not a great real life pair. DeAngelo played a little bit of Schaefer too. Weirdly at some times, like you'd see them on the ice together. And I was like, I guess I get it because Schaefer can do everything and DeAngelo can skate, right?
Starting point is 01:11:43 He can skate. Sure. I still like Pollock and Pellich. I think they're both really good defensemen. Seeing the cap hit next to Schaefer, good Lord. Yeah, well, when that ELC is up. This summer. Holy!
Starting point is 01:11:56 This summer when that extension is signed. I'm telling you, I would not be shocked to see a 20 in front of it. And it should be. No. I wouldn't either. Like no McCarr number for sure. Adam. Who's the guy
Starting point is 01:12:08 The Duck signed yesterday? Tristan Linoe And I have information on him Got it I have Tristan I have Tristan Leno lore We have Tristan Lanoe takes I do have a take
Starting point is 01:12:18 But it's not mine I stole it from Zach Kavanaugh We'll get to that in a second Jesse I sent you an email Are we off of the Leafs? No but I wanted to at least show this As a little break in our Leafs segment
Starting point is 01:12:31 Because I thought this was really funny And Jesse you sent Yeah I sent it via email But I think Jesse you were the one that took this picture, were you not? There was a picture sent to us at the game. You didn't get the email?
Starting point is 01:12:45 No. Is it sent through? Okay. Well, we'll come back to it. Is it the one that I sent? Yeah. Oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:50 This is crazy and I bet it's coming through here soon. We can go on to other Leafs things until that email comes in because whatever Gmail is slow today. In terms of depth on defense, right? We talked about the McCabe skate cut just a little. little bit there. He was wearing, you know, the slice proof socks or whatever. Could have been bad. CJ is saying, talked about it on the CJ show yesterday that the Leafs are active and the thing they're after is a defenseman. And correct. So my question to you guys would be, the Leafs are right. Like you're not going to get a, you're probably not going to get somebody who's in the Quinn
Starting point is 01:13:33 Hughes, Zach Wrenskiy level of, of player. Right. Right. Not. Because Nyes would have been the piece to do that with. Right. You know, Darren Radish's partner last year was J.J. Moser, who is criminally underrated and strong defensively. Who is the J.J. Moser that the Leafs could, or somebody who plays to 80%, 90% of what Moser could do that the Leafs could get with a package that I unfortunately believe would surround Ben Danford.
Starting point is 01:14:03 Well, and you're going to have to kind of thread the needle. Cap wise as well. Yeah. So I don't know how you do that. Well, they've got $7 million in cap. It's interesting that they can spend exactly $7 million over the cap. Like, that feels very intentional. It's David Clarkson all over again.
Starting point is 01:14:22 It literally is. David Clarkson. Remember David Clarkson? Remember you traded for Nathan Horton's contract and we spent $7 million over the cap? Right, right, right, right. That's literally the same position they're in again. And I think you probably work in a deal, whatever that deal is. It's like you're probably not getting off Merzleekins' contract.
Starting point is 01:14:37 but isn't Dakota Josh was going to expire at the end of the year? That I'm not sure. So, you know, maybe that's part of how you make the money work or... I was surprised to see a player who was skating at camp
Starting point is 01:14:49 placed on LTIR. I don't think he's going to play. I thought that was noteworthy. I don't think he's going to play. Who's the player for you, though? What kind of... And it doesn't have to be the player,
Starting point is 01:15:05 but like archetype. Who do you... Because I think what they need. JJ Moser. Well, other than him. Oh, okay. That's an easy one. You know, who can you, what team can you go to that's going to have someone shake loose like that?
Starting point is 01:15:16 Because they need a top one. Something like that's going to develop over the course of the season, right? Yeah. Because teams will fall where they thought they were going to make the playoffs and they won't be in that situation. They'll be able to shake loose from these teams, right? I think it's hard to judge right now who that player will be. Let's eliminate. Okay, so the ducks, we take them out.
Starting point is 01:15:34 Yeah. I wondered about the flames. because they got a lot of mid-level defensemen who are tough and big and they'll probably sell right? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:46 Yeah, you're right, Jesse. Maybe it's too early. I'm struggling. But they're going to have to do something. That's clear. Unless you want to upgrade on center somehow, in which case I'd be calling the Islanders about Boorovat if you could.
Starting point is 01:16:02 Yeah, I'm struggling. Yeah, anyway. I think it's a little early. All right. What else on the Leafs did you want to do, Jesse? Well, we got your picture. Okay, so this is funny. So someone sent me this on Instagram.
Starting point is 01:16:12 This guy has a dangle LFR jersey. I have never seen this. He's got a dangle nameplate. And for numbers, it says LFR. That is crazy. Do you think he got that at like real sports? How do you get that crest? Yeah, like where would you even get those letters?
Starting point is 01:16:33 Do they do that? Or is it like tape that he put on? he did a really good job like it looks it looks really good yeah I assume at real sports they could do dangle but can they do three letters for the numbers place I don't think so they could definitely do dangle no I've never seen
Starting point is 01:16:48 letters that'd be no like that the only thing I can think is like did he cut up some numbers and stitch them together no no professional at least iron on yeah that's uh like that's furry like you you could shave that
Starting point is 01:17:05 you know what I mean That's not paper. Excuse me to get all Sopranos, but this is a custom job. And I don't know where he got that. It's a fanatics jersey. So, you know, it's a new one. Like, he did this in the last year or so, or a couple of years. You know, it's not an Adidas one still.
Starting point is 01:17:20 I have never, ever seen that before. I have seen Dangle jerseys in the wild, and that is always frigging trippy. We saw one at the outdoor game in Hamilton. Someone had to Dengel 10, I think, right? Oh, that's throwing it back. I don't remember. Might have been a 20. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:35 Because I can't, when did I switch that? But, yeah, I had this sent to me, and it absolutely blew my mind. We got to find this guy. I know. I want to know who he is. And I want to know why. Yeah. Why?
Starting point is 01:17:48 Like, tell me, tell me why. Why? He lost a bet. He finished last place in his fantasy pool. Yeah. He actually hates my guts. You don't own an LFR jersey. No.
Starting point is 01:17:58 Like a Leafs jersey that just says LFR. No, that guy owns more LFR things than I do. That's crazy. So funny. And awesome. It's great. Complement to you. 20 years, man. I think it's pretty cool, man. Oh, shut. Take that. Take that compliment. Gosh. New from Nespresso. Blend wellness into your coffee routine with a coffee plus range, infused with functional benefits. Steve and I are in early 30s.
Starting point is 01:19:13 And we've never fully grown up. And so what I'm about to show you, I am not embarrassed to say, I sent to every single one of my family members. And you know, it's funny, when you drop thing in the family group chat, most of the time people don't click it. So I actually had to follow up a couple times ago, did you watch, did you watch, did you watch? And then my father log up back and said, what am I watching for here? I don't understand what's going on. And I said, did you turn up the volume?
Starting point is 01:19:36 He's like, no. And I'm like, okay. So the San Jose sharks have a hype video that plays in front of the entire crowd at SAP Center before every game. And there's a familiar voice on it. Jesse Blake, go ahead. So you can't play the video,
Starting point is 01:19:52 but we can do the audio. The future is teal is over. The future seems to be now. That's it. You, not just a voice, Adam. You let it off. Yeah, it's right at the start. I'm the lead.
Starting point is 01:20:13 I'm the George Springer. Lead off hitter. Like, oh, big time. I felt really good about that. And the only other time I've ever been featured in a hype video was, remember the Minnesota Wilde randomly used a thing a couple years ago for the playoffs when they randomly made it? We've been in a bunch of these.
Starting point is 01:20:25 I want to say Vegas too. Jesse was in a good one. I remember back. I forget what it was, but I remember being hilarious. And you've been in a couple. I was in the Winnibeck. Jets put me in a video when I said that hellabuck was a frog. And then he ended up winning the heart and vest.
Starting point is 01:20:45 Incredible. And guess what? They all agree with you now. When Vegas went to the cup final in their first year, we were in it. Were we? I said something along the lines. They're an expansion team. So I have three more to add to this.
Starting point is 01:21:00 Give it to me. So we have this sharks one. Yeah. I don't know if you guys watched them all. Or have you've known that these exist. No. So we've been featured in. three other videos since this sharks one that's happened or around this time this year
Starting point is 01:21:13 this year I told them to you so hey once again you can't play any of these videos three but three additional yes we're in four we're doing as I'm going to take you on this journey here because I've prepared them this is a journey I had no idea the I is does yours play before every game yes or is it oh that every game and I that's I haven't even reached out to the I did not tell us they were doing that no and we know the sharks yeah so the hurricanes I didn't know about the other three. That's what we're going to do. The Hurricanes,
Starting point is 01:21:40 they released a chase for the cup video before their first game. And we are in that one. So I'm going to play. We're in it a couple times. So let me just get through. You get to these playoffs.
Starting point is 01:21:53 And all of a sudden, you got to pay attention to the hurricane. So there we are. There's one time in that video. And then they show a bunch of footage of them winning against the Ottawa senators. And then we get to this one.
Starting point is 01:22:05 Sweeping. The Ottawa. senators. The canes are one of these top dogs. Not talking again and then we got this one. And then now they're starting to do the same here for the Philadelphia Flyers. We kept asking ourselves for years and years and years. When are the canes going to figure it out and get to the next level? Now one seven in a row.
Starting point is 01:22:24 Are you on the phone? I don't know. I don't know why your audio is a stream or something. I assume it's a stream. I got to upgrade that microphone on the... You don't sound like that on your stream. I don't know where that was from. Oh, maybe they just put, they can, they can, they can,
Starting point is 01:22:36 You can also put a filter on it. Yeah. But there you go. So we got three in that hurricane. I'm not looking to Jesse screen because I don't, I have no idea what the other floor. Well, take your glasses off. Then you can't see anything. Well, there you go.
Starting point is 01:22:48 Sharks and canes so far. That's pretty good. Cains. We got two divisions covered already. And by the way, the weirdest part about this is none of them have featured you yet. Normally, it's you. Oh, yeah. No, but I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
Starting point is 01:23:00 I'm like, but, wow. I'm just happy for us. Me too. And next up the Tampa Bay Lightning do a series. is called recharge. It's their like... I like that name. Like the blueprint that Leafs have.
Starting point is 01:23:12 And the rebuild on... Recharge is good. The Montreal one? Yes. The Rebuild for the Hay... Yeah. So the recharge, the lightnings do it on their YouTube channel. And then...
Starting point is 01:23:20 So the brand new season started, and this was in episode one. These are incredible. Watching him shut down... Awesome for the big rangey 20 goal score. VL. And I got to tell you, Jeff Vial was awesome for the ducks. His defensive abilities are incredible.
Starting point is 01:23:36 watching him shut down Connor McDavid was a feat to behold like this guy he's something special Tampa I think has set themselves up beautifully I want you to imagine this
Starting point is 01:23:46 Jess okay VL Gord McKeyev and McKayev Holberg Holmberg McAyev Holmberg Steps in front
Starting point is 01:23:53 wrap around great contribution Steve former Leaf these guys said stuff and I went yeah Leaf
Starting point is 01:24:00 so our quick chat about VL and Holmberg there that made the recharge for the lightning which was fun. And then last up, we have the Washington Capitals.
Starting point is 01:24:10 Wow. There behind the scenes one is called Fresh Sheet. It's pretty good. It's season two. Every two weeks in the laundry. Season two, episode two. Let's go. We have this.
Starting point is 01:24:21 And they, in my opinion, have been one of the winners of this off season. Boone Jenner is contract with the Capitals. Four years, 23 million. Jesse, apparently the most quotable person among us. I'm surprised anybody uses my voice in these. No, your voice is great. Ugly voice. No.
Starting point is 01:24:37 I've always said this. Your scream is ugly. Yeah, the scream is ugly. Your scream is ugly. Your talking voice is good, though. So that's, shout out the caps, the lightning, the hurricanes, and the sharks for clipping SDPN content throwing in all their stuff. I believe I put all of them in the playoffs this year.
Starting point is 01:24:54 That's crazy. The Ducks one is from the preview, right? Yeah. Yes. Yeah. No, sorry, the Lightning one was from the preview. About the Ducks. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:04 The Lightning one. So the. So the preview would have came out like only a couple days before that video of the recharge. So the recharge came out, I think, like two days ago. And our preview came out like last weekish. So yeah, they clip that pretty quick and got in there. The Hurricanes one, they would have had a lot of time from the playoffs to put that in that one. And then the recharge one, I think was from like a summer video about one of the trades.
Starting point is 01:25:27 And the sharks one is from our preview of the sharks too. Oh, yeah, the sharks one's a quick turnaround too. Yeah. Whoever cut that? I will never. I will never not get excited about this and I know people are probably listening to this going what? Who guys? Who gives a shit? Honestly
Starting point is 01:25:41 fucking I don't care. I love it. That's awesome to me and I'm losing my mind. I'm excited for the, here, play the Leaf one. Stop, man. We are never getting on a Leafs hype reel ever, ever. No? Never ever. Here, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, here. Guys, shut up. We need to create clippable clips.
Starting point is 01:26:03 For them. Here, Hayden, isolate? Okay. Keith Pelly has done an exceptional job. Huge penis. That's going in. By the way, wait, wait, wait, wait. All right, right, right.
Starting point is 01:26:20 I love Keith Pelly's glasses. Big money. Now, let me say this. I have to give the Leafs credit. The hype video, this is a real they put out, uh, featured where, where, um, they featured Paul Bissinet saying, I can't cheer for this because Chike is in. And he's a big, he's a shained own guy and I get that.
Starting point is 01:26:37 And he's like, I'm out. And then, you know, Biz did the right thing and said delete this at Leafs and stuff like that. But what I do like about the Leafs this year is they're finally fucking doing, which is what we've been saying that they should do for years, which is lean into the fact that everybody hates you. You're Darth Vader. Start acting like it. And having Willie say, you know, it's always about the fucking Leafs. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 01:26:58 Thank you. So I don't keep, listen, the Leafs are never going to feature us in anything because I'm pretty sure opera management isn't thrilled with us. And I'm talking about above the GM level because we've said some things about the company that maybe they wouldn't love. But I will say this. The more that they lean into that, the more they're going to galvanize Leafs Nation,
Starting point is 01:27:19 finally. Brennan Shanahan wanted it to be neutral. Remember how boring the Leaf's Twitter account was? Had no personality. Then last year they tried to get funny, but the team sucked ass. So it was kind of hard. This year, give me a little bit of attitude.
Starting point is 01:27:33 And they're doing it. And I like that. And I have to compliment them on that. Adam, you're cutting all the way. through it. So we need a couple more clips here. Hayden just. I'm switching to Rogers. Hold on. Here.
Starting point is 01:27:46 One one. I'd pay more for streaming. Okay, sorry. Any others? I was just going to say, I was going to say, here. Man, I can't wait to watch SportsNet Plus. Amazing. Right?
Starting point is 01:28:03 Jesse, cut us a promo. These are all real good. Cut us a promo. Great. I'm going to stick to the other market. See, I will AI you into a video. They actually like showing us, love. So I'm going to keep hyping those markets.
Starting point is 01:28:14 Wait, can we game this? Who hasn't had their home opener yet? Everybody, I think, haven't they? No, I don't think. Sends haven't even played a game. Their first game's on the road. In Toronto. Toronto?
Starting point is 01:28:25 Are they tonight? So I know. No, they play Saturday. Wow, that's a bizarre start. So I know like they haven't played a game. Okay, wait. Here, Hayden. Who takes the Ottawa senator seriously?
Starting point is 01:28:39 All right. Use that. I love that. No, they're going to love that. Oh, no, no, no, no, here, here, here, here. Sorry, sorry. This is why Toronto doesn't take the Ottawa Senator seriously. Oh, beautiful.
Starting point is 01:28:55 Use it. Now, I do want to mention, too, we put out an Instagram clip, and I don't want to spend too much time on this, but Steve and Jesse were trying to compliment the Montreal Canadians. And if you listen to the show, no Montreal Canadian fan had an individual. issue with Stephen Jesse said. But because of Hayden, Hayden loves me, hates the two of you.
Starting point is 01:29:16 Hayden, the way he cut it. More like Hayton. Exactly. Now, listen, Hayden and I have worked together at night for years. We have a bond. You guys just wouldn't get it. Okay. You wouldn't get it.
Starting point is 01:29:26 And I am now the most popular member of the SDP staff in Montreal because you guys try to compare them to the Carolina hurricanes. And how about both of you go fuck yourself? reigning cup champs, by the way. How about both of the Stanley Cup champion? How about you both suck for that? I need to defend myself a little bit here.
Starting point is 01:29:47 Oh, yeah? No, you don't. When I sit here... Should we give you the chance? You think that'd be nice? When I sit here and I put down the time codes of the show, I have a separate sheet where I put down time codes of things I like for clips. Jesse had the quote that I like.
Starting point is 01:30:09 which was, you know which team you just described? The Carolina Hurricanes. Everything around that, I was just like, whatever I need to get. It can't just be a four-second clip. Because the thesis is that. It didn't even clock to me anything on either side of it. It was just that quote is the only thing I cared about. So then when I went on Twitter and saw the vitriol, I was like, okay, people only watch
Starting point is 01:30:33 the first two seconds. Can we play it? Can we play it very quickly? I want people to reference this because there are, our Canadians fans, and I saw them on the stream, they're Canadians fans that are here every episode. Oh, I got a couple texts too. And they, nobody had an issue of it in the context of the show. We're comparing you to a younger version of the Carolina Hurricanes, who, by the way, took eight years to break through. It's my fault and here's where we go wrong. Okay, so this is the clip. I don't know how to say this
Starting point is 01:31:01 in a way that isn't insulting. I don't think they're particularly special. I think they're very simple. Oh, fuck you, Steve Dangle. Fuck you. That's a crazy thing to say because nobody who doesn't listen to the podcast, like everybody who doesn't listen to the podcast saw that. And if they recognize who you are and they're like, oh, that's the Leafs guy, I think. Stay on that side. The quote he gave.
Starting point is 01:31:27 They're like, fuck you. What do you mean we don't have anybody special? So here's how words. Here's how words work is someone begins speaking. So I began speaking. and I hooked you with that one, didn't I? I hooked you. But instead of being like, what else is he got to say?
Starting point is 01:31:46 You just went, fuck you, Tabernax. Adam, if we had, in the comment section. If we had a sports radio show in Montreal. Yeah. And I wanted to rile up the people and get the phone lines lit up. Yeah. All eight lines. I'd go, Steve Dangle, Leafs Homer.
Starting point is 01:32:06 Does those YouTube videos after every game just, pumping up the Leafs. Here's what he had to say about this year's Montreal Canadians. I don't know how to say this in a way that isn't insulting. I don't think they're particularly special. What do you mean? They're not special. What?
Starting point is 01:32:22 Lane Hudson, Cole copy of Nick Suzuki. Joky-Troby. Dope. What was it? Rocket, Richard. Fuck you. That's all I need. You gave me the fodder to hate you forever. And hilariously, all the goodwill that you banked doing the Canadians
Starting point is 01:32:39 games last year where you became a Canadians fan and Lee fans hated you that's gone. Everybody hates you. Everybody hates you again. Now, now. The world is healing. Jesse, play it from the beginning and don't cut it off. No. No. No. No. No. Hey, fuck you.
Starting point is 01:32:53 No. That would be the correct way to listen to people. No. Why would we ever listen to people? Steve. Why do we want to unsmooth people's brains? Right? I can't help them. They don't want to listen to the 46 second clip. They want to be mad. You'll let them. Are you about to play the outro? Is that what your
Starting point is 01:33:13 figure's doing? No, no, no. Oh, I was like, don't you do play the thing. Play it. I don't know how to say this in a way that isn't insulting. I don't think they're particularly special. I think they're very simple. They're young, energetic, work hard, get saves. That's really it. Like, it's not a team where you're like, they have Kutrov and they just rely on him being insane or the avalanche can at times be Nathan McKinnon in his band of Mary Men or Kail McCar in his band of Mary Men. On any given night, a different line could be their best line
Starting point is 01:33:45 and the reason that they win. Nobody should be insulted by what you're saying if you're listening to that Habs fan because you know what team you just described. Which one? What? The Carolina Hurricane. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:55 That exact description you gave is exactly how the Hurricanes became Stanley Cup champions and the Montreal Canadians have that same roster breakdown. Respectfully. How did you fuck that up? The clip was about how
Starting point is 01:34:07 their four lines are so good that they have everything you need to become a Stanley Cup champion right now. And somehow, because Hayden is really good at clipping. To be fair, like that's Hayden's job to create the clicks. Yeah, yeah. I think you did you did your job. You know what I love about this is you, if you want to see the dumbest comment section, and listen, I'm a leaf fan. I see dumb leaf fans and comment sections all the time.
Starting point is 01:34:35 Sometimes I'm one of them. But I will say, these are, it's a collection of the angriest, thinnest-skinned, piss babies I've ever seen. Like, you guys told on yourselves in such an insane way. They just compared you to the Stanley Cup champions and you can't sit for 45 seconds and you're out the point. And if you can't, then stay mad. Your team's amazing. I wrote about this in a book that came out two years ago and it's still true. if there is a dad
Starting point is 01:35:07 with his kids in his Instagram profile photo buckle up because you're about to get called some slurs Yeah, no, you're right. Buckle up. Especially if those are Oakley sunglasses. Holy shit.
Starting point is 01:35:20 I know what it is. No. No. Clean-shaven. I find racism in Oakley Sunglars. We got our, these are Christmas photos from three years ago,
Starting point is 01:35:30 you know, gelled hair, smiling, and pick, take your pick. I haven't been late in two weeks and I'm going to yell at this guy on the internet. I left a comment to try and clarify for the people that we're trying to say that this team is a Stanley Cup contender.
Starting point is 01:35:46 And then somebody replied to me and they were like, well, perception versus reality, jabroney. Oh, what a comeback. Jesse, how did you get out of bed this morning? I don't even know how you're here. Oh, man. Montreal Canadian fans,
Starting point is 01:36:02 they're awesome. They are. And I'm disappointed that some of them will now hate us for the absolutely wrong reason. I'm not. Like there's no reason. You can't listen. They'll be over it tomorrow because somebody else will say something that isn't 1,000% positive and they'll cry about it. And that happens with every fan base.
Starting point is 01:36:20 Canadians fans are not special in that regard. Steve's a traitor to the Leafs. He's streaming Habs games anyway. Here's me in a Sabres jersey. What the fuck? Yeah. So hey. What are we?
Starting point is 01:36:33 Oh, the other thing you need to know is, and you guys don't understand this because I'm elite and you guys are, you know, you guys are role players. So here's what you need to understand. When you're in reality television, this is the other thing,
Starting point is 01:36:41 one of my other true loves in life is watching Bravo shows. Love them. Fucking love them. And one of the things that certain characters get season by season, especially the long term ones, is they get a favorable edit. They get a favorable edit. So they might be in a bad moment,
Starting point is 01:36:56 but we're going to give you a favorable edit on that one. So it's not as bad as it seems. Whereas some other people, they'll take something, they'll throw it in out of context, or they'll cut to that interview where they're like, whatever, they just give a face.
Starting point is 01:37:07 An editor can also fuck you. Hayden's giving me a favorable edit this season, guys. Oh, yeah. I'm the pro. You guys are getting to get in trouble this season. Hayden's doing a good job. I do say there is one thing earlier in the show where Adam said that the Blue Jacket's room is dead.
Starting point is 01:37:22 I could just leave out the part where he says the room now is great. That's what I mean. I could just do this all over again. You could. You could. And it's funny because there's been a lot of Lee fans taking shots at Columbus needlessly. Recently, since the Marchanko trade and Blue Jackets fans going,
Starting point is 01:37:39 fuck you too and whatever, because that's how the world works right now. But I have to say, stick around for the full clip, guys. And the ones, the people that are listening to the show, they do. So Hayden's job is to get clicks, right? Yeah. So he did a great job. He got the clicks. So if we wanted to continue doing a great job, Steve, rage bait Montreal Canadiens fans.
Starting point is 01:37:59 Oh, no, he's already done that. No, continue. Go back to the well until it is dry. Drain it of water. Cut a promo. Jesse, don't, that's a little sexual for me. Okay. So, Steve, cut a promo on the Canadians.
Starting point is 01:38:18 The Montreal Canadians, the Montreal Canadians. That is going to be the only time you see the Montreal Canadians repeat anything. Nick Suzuki, Selke, again, no shot. Cole Cawfield, Rocket, again, no shot. And Dobish, I can't wait for Halloween and for that guy to get carved up because he is going to turn into a pumpkin and you all know it.
Starting point is 01:38:54 And one day, I'm going to know French well enough that I could say it in both languages. This team is a thing of the past. Wow. Done. We're uploading that with zero contact You know all right Now completely fuck me
Starting point is 01:39:10 Why don't we turn it into a bit where we just rage bait Franchises and it's like an inside Because I fucking hate that That'd be fun though No Like if you're gonna know the SDP listeners are going to know And they're going to laugh Yeah but the people who don't know what we're doing
Starting point is 01:39:23 And they're going to cry It's going to reach them And we're just going to become bad guys All right all right Rage bait Steve Yes Rage bait who's who's like a neutral fan base who hasn't done anything to you. Minnesota.
Starting point is 01:39:36 Rage bait Minnesota. We can't do ever. No, just do it. And then I got out of the shit to get. We can't put rage bait the wild. Come on, there's some things. This morning, when you leave for work, I just want you to know you're doing a Quinn Hughes impression.
Starting point is 01:40:04 Every single time you head out the door to leave for work. every single time you head to school, you head to the store, you head out for a walk so that your dog can take a dump on your old Matt Zuccarello jersey because that's all it's good for now. Every single time you leave the door,
Starting point is 01:40:23 you're doing a Quinn Hughes impression because he's going to do what you're doing right now, and that's leaving. Yeah. These are on the friggin' spot, by the way. Trade ice skating at Nathan Phillips Square for Ice Q.

Starting point is 01:41:37 Only two? Tristan Leno. Well, we got the whole season to work through the whole fan base. Tristan Leno. That can't all be out there. If I had asked you guys who Tristan Leno played for on Monday,
Starting point is 01:41:52 would you've been able to name it? Yes. Good. I did know he was a duck. You, Linu. I leneu. Jesse, could you have? No.
Starting point is 01:41:59 I couldn't have either. No. I'm a Leno. I'm not a liar like Steve. Yeah, he's full of shit. Yeah. Now, Tristan Leno is a second round draft. pick from 2022, pick 53.
Starting point is 01:42:10 He has played. Are you ready? 14 games in the NHL. Yeah. See? He actually scored to start the start. He scored to start the year. He's paired with Jackson League?
Starting point is 01:42:26 He's paired with Jackson. He's paired with Jackson's a hundred percent. Yeah, absolutely, bro. Like, yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:34 Yeah. Yeah. So Tristan Lennow got a, an extension. Extension. Extension. for six years seven point two million dollars seven point two million
Starting point is 01:42:48 dollars Tristan Leno at the end of this contract in real dollars will have made more in NHL salary than Wayne Gretzky did in his career with no cap that is bananas now that was 30 years ago and Wayne Gretzky was making a lot of money at the time
Starting point is 01:43:03 and that's a lot of money that's so crazy so that's like that's when gas was like 60 cents a leader right but Tristan Leno got the largest contract in NHL history with a game with a player for 14 games played and I was like okay well first off Pat Verbeek learned his Leo Carlson lesson and his cutter goce lesson okay great the other thing is um I don't know anything about him so what do I need to know so Zach Kavanaugh who I've shouted on in the show many times if you want to follow the ducks you must follow Zach and I asked to
Starting point is 01:43:38 him about this and he said, Pat certainly learned his lesson, ha ha. Deal is definitely a big bet, but I think a well-founded bet. Realistically, Leno was NHL ready last season, but the right side was jammed up with Gouda Struba and then John Carlson too. He looks great.
Starting point is 01:43:54 The ducks are going to lean on him and Lecombe a lot. He looked just as if if not more ready this season than he had been. Built like a brick house, but still quite mobile, great first pass, very poised on the offensive blue line and a great shot. He said everybody's saying who today will know him soon enough.
Starting point is 01:44:11 And what I find hilarious about that comment is if you asked Ducks fans last year who their worst defenseman was, it would have been Radco Goudis, even before the Matthews thing. And that guy kept this guy out of the lineup. Yeah, it doesn't seem great, eh? But he was the captain. He was the captain. So I think it's very interesting that on that page it said his agent was Ian Pulver because it sure feels like the Ducks got pulverized.
Starting point is 01:44:38 in this deal that's very good. Clap. I'm still doing the cutting of promo thing. But also, do you think when Pat Verbeek goes to bed at night, he has dreams of hunting Danny Breyer with a crossbow? Yeah. Yeah. I think he's overcorrecting here.
Starting point is 01:44:54 That's ridiculous. Hand out this contract for somebody hasn't played any NHL games. It's ridiculous. Also, Adam, you have hallucinated a Leno goal. They haven't played yet this season. Oh, it was last year. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:05 He played one. It's last year. Sorry, he played one game last year. a goal. One game last year had a goal. One NHLC game last year. Yeah. No. Had a goal. $7.2 million. Yep. That's an overcorrection. Now, here's my question to you guys. I think there are two types of contracts being started being being done right now. There's the bet contract. Yes. Which is what this is. And then there's the contract that's I would argue to you that there for the players is more upside in the bet contract than there is the earned contract. And I'll tell you why.
Starting point is 01:45:36 Tristan Leno, 14 games. Okay. Simon Edvinson. I was about to say. Is if, CJ said on on the show yesterday, if Detroit would go to $10 million, be it three, four, or five years, Edvison would be in.
Starting point is 01:45:51 Detroit won't do that right now. And so, and Simon Edvison Yeah. Is a top line defender for the Detroit Red Wings. Zeev Bouem, good player with high potential.
Starting point is 01:46:05 Bet of a contract by the, Vancouver Canucks. Early too. Early, early bet. $9 million. The Detroit Red Wings know they have a top line guy in Edvinson. The Canucks hope they might have a top line guy in Bouillon. The Ducks hope they might have a top line guy in Leno.
Starting point is 01:46:25 The Detroit Red Wings, I'm making Tristan Leno about the Detroit Red Wings, are out of their mind if they think they're going to get Edvinson for less than 10. and he's out of his mind if he signs for anything less than 10 and a half. Here's, well, Adam, let's compare the two situations. When the Ducks play their next game, Tristan Lano will be available. And when Detroit plays their next game, Simon Edmondson will not be available. Ducks play Vegas tonight. Tristan Lano is useful to the Ducks right now.
Starting point is 01:46:58 Well, next year. He's not right now. He's making $800,000 this year. It's only $800,000. Simon Evanson is not useful. to the Red Wings because he is not playing. Tristan Lanoe is making his current salary and next year he will be making that salary,
Starting point is 01:47:12 which will then be his current salary. Simon Edvinson is currently signed to $0. So Edvinson is higher paid right now. Oh, sorry, Leno's even higher paid right now. Yes. Wow. Like, yeah, it's funny that you're making this about the Red Wings, but like you could clown
Starting point is 01:47:30 on this contract all you want. He's playing. it is unjustifiable what's going on in Detroit. Unjustifiable. And you know what's amazing? How many Red Wing's fans are like, good, keep it up. And like I get messages from Red Wings fans all the time. I'm like, please keep torching the organization.
Starting point is 01:47:51 We're driving us crazy. Oh. So they think like they want everybody on side pressuring the Red Wings to change them. Okay. Don't cut a promo yet. I think there was time for Tristan Linneau to place and play some. games here. How much?
Starting point is 01:48:05 I think you could have given this a month. You could have given it a season. He's going to be an RFA at the end of this first year in the NHL. And we couldn't wait till then to try and prove this deal. So I want to ask you about that, Jesse. That was beginning to be my next question. Yeah. Beautiful. Beautiful that you touched on that.
Starting point is 01:48:22 Yeah. My question to you, Jesse, Blake, is how much more money if Tristan Leno scores 25 points this season, how much more money per season does that cost the ducks? No, I don't think it's a lot. maybe a quarter million a year. That's what I, that's what I'm thinking. Like, I don't think the difference here is, oh my God,
Starting point is 01:48:40 Tristan Lineau might have a Norris trophy winning season. We've got to pay him 15. This isn't Leo Carlson. No, I'm sorry, to Tristan Leno's one game last year. This is an overcorrection. It's crazy.
Starting point is 01:48:52 And I'm happy. He's got PTSD. And I'm, but I'm happy for the person. Yeah. Like, this is really cool that he's making all this money. Sure. At that age and just guess this contract.
Starting point is 01:49:01 I'd sign it to. I think it's a bit of an overcor. What's Mintukov's contract and what is also Tyson Heinz contract? Because I know they signed him. Mintikoff is 7.2. That's he didn't play every game for them last year. Heinz hasn't been signed. He's not eligible for another contract.
Starting point is 01:49:20 Oh, who am I thinking of then? At the July 1st this year, then he could sign an extension, but he's not eligible yet. Maybe I was thinking of Lano then. Yeah, Mintikov's making the exact same amount like Mitzikov's. I put him ahead right now. I mean, I guess. I suppose. Like, yeah, that's crazy.
Starting point is 01:49:40 Like, if I'm Mintikov, I'm friggin, I'm the same age. You picked me higher. I'm pretty sure. I've played way more games and you think this guy's the same thing as me. Now, another signing yesterday. Louis Craveyet in Buffalo. Yes. We know a little more about Louis Crevier.
Starting point is 01:50:02 Yes, we do. Four million bucks a year. Here's Steve Dangle. You saw a lot of Buffalo Sabres to hockey, especially in the playoffs. What did you think? Four million bucks a year for your deal. I thought these guys should go out and get Louis Crevier in a trade with the Blackhawks. So they did.
Starting point is 01:50:17 Oh, right. Was that where we got it? Yes, yes. He was part of the Byram deal. Oh, I'm an idiot. And Byron had a tough night the night before. Yeah. Well, we were going to touch on that, but we were probably running out of time.
Starting point is 01:50:26 Yeah. No, he's one of the biggest players in the NHL, right-handed. I think that's a really smart bet. I think there's so much more proof of concept at the NHL level with Krivier. And it's so much less money. He probably doesn't have the same upside as the two players we just talked about.
Starting point is 01:50:48 But I would be shocked at the if the Sabres were to regret that deal. Yeah, hard to lose on a $4 million deal in this day and age. I still think like the salary cap's going up, right? and we want to say everything doesn't really matter because the cap's going up. Eventually,
Starting point is 01:51:09 we need to talk about cap hits that will matter. It will stop going up. A couple years ago, a couple years ago, if crevier got $4 million, we'd be saying that's the worst deal. Buddy, Jake McCabe got five and a half. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:51:22 And at the time, I was like, well, see. I think that what'll happen here is we're going to get up to $150 million here in the next half decade. We'll probably go to $1.75, and it's probably going to crest for a little while. This jump, The reason the jump is happening so fast is because it's been artificially held back.
Starting point is 01:51:37 That's been the problem. And even the cap this year is artificially about $10 million lower than it should be. And that was a deal between the PA and the NHL. But because the new TV deals will be locked in eventually, that enormous growth in television revenue will stop because it will flatten out. It'll even out. So what teams need to do right now is lock in for three or four years with your Louis creviers and your Tristan Lenoz,
Starting point is 01:52:02 Which I think Creve is a really good deal. Great deal. Nothing wrong with that. And he was so great for them in the playoffs last year, idiot moron. But I think that there will be some casualties out of this. I just don't know that any of them have been signed this year because I think it's still too far away for it to matter. Oh, there's going to be bad deals. Yeah, but not yet.
Starting point is 01:52:23 Not yet. That's fair. So the question will be who reads the market sort of flattening out first and starts to sign smart deals again? Who gets dubest? Yeah. You signed all the Leafs. All right. Two more quick things.
Starting point is 01:52:38 Two more, well, three. First off, Shasturkin goal. Oh, my God. How did that lead the show? I know. First, goalie goal in Rangers history, which I, uh, there was a, that's crazy, by the way. Mandela effect there. I could have swore Shisterkin had scored a goal before, but I think it's just that he's
Starting point is 01:52:54 always badly wanted one. Like he always kind of goes for it. He always attempts it. Um, so it was, it was great. to see him get one and friggin absolutely electric leading the the fist bump line yes yeah i was watching some of the highlights of um um clen trying it after because some people were posting that uh after shisterkin scored his and he definitely like went for it in his career like he had a couple of those moments and i'm happy that shistergan got it yeah it was such a good shot too
Starting point is 01:53:20 credit him on flipping it right over everybody and right in and in traffic yeah yeah oh my god yeah incredible if that was very important hey but if that was markstrom He'd be going for it like up four two. I think the Rangers playoffs. Let's go. Again, I'm going through this rapid fire. Sasha Barkoff will have an MRI today. It's the other leg.
Starting point is 01:53:43 But it looks like a potential knee injury. But we don't know if it like it didn't seem like it was like last year was like, oh, he's out for the year. I don't know that that's. It looked nasty. It looked bad. But I don't know that that was like they didn't want. They didn't give me any sense yesterday that they are dreading this. It might be shitty and it might be bad luck.
Starting point is 01:54:00 But I don't feel like. Like it's a season thing. Yeah, we'll see. From that game, the sharks looked really good, really early on. They're up 3-0. The Sasha Barkoff thing,
Starting point is 01:54:11 I think, got the wings under the sales for the Panthers. They charged back. And then in OT, Steve's favorite player pots the winner from Mackman-Selabrini. Can you give it to us? My favorite player?
Starting point is 01:54:24 Luca? Oh, Kenyote. Hey, I thought you knew. Sorry, no, in my head, I was like, the Panthers one. What are you talking about? No, the sharks one. No, and earlier today, I said they were two and oh, and they're not. Somebody helped this man.
Starting point is 01:54:41 My bad. My bad. Yeah, Luca Kenyote. That's all I wanted. Drew? Ugly, I'm sorry. No, it's my fault. Drew is in like six pools, and he says he has Kenyoni in all the ones. He has them in every single one. I picked him up in one of my other pools.
Starting point is 01:54:57 Did you? Yeah, I don't have it in the SDPN one, though. It's a good pickup. If I'm not mistaken, we were supposed to interview. view him when we were there with the barracuda. Yeah. And we didn't get him because he was up with the sharks. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:55:07 Yeah. He's run of their power play. One thing, one thing, note from the broadcast, shout out the guys on the NBC Sports California broadcasts because at the beginning of a big kill for the sharks, it was like a double minor.
Starting point is 01:55:18 It was four minutes. They're like, oh, Macklin Celebrity is going out on to kill this, like shorthand. He's on the penalty kill. Shout out Ryan Worsowski for doing this. Immediately at the end of that penalty kill, he scores that shorthanded goal.
Starting point is 01:55:30 Oh. So those guys, they called it out and they scored. It was a really cool moment for them. I thought you were about to tell me and he blocked a shot and it was bad. No, no. I think like Macklin penalty kill stuff is going to be a thing this year. It was awesome. It was a good game by them, even though they blew that lead.
Starting point is 01:55:45 Yeah. I mean, you know, we gave the Oilers a fair bit of guff. I mean, the sharks are going to have to shake that habit because this is something they are prone to. Like if they are indeed taking the next step, Pakistan. your net boys. Last year, sharks walk away with one point. This year,
Starting point is 01:56:04 sharks walk away with two. Hell yeah. That may be true. And you know what? Great three-on-three team. Just like Columbus did the Leafs favor last night beating the Sabres.
Starting point is 01:56:13 Thank you San Jose for beating another one of our division opponents. Yeah. In the Florida Panthers, I will thank everybody because I want to get in the playoffs again. A couple more things. Real quick.
Starting point is 01:56:23 Jesse. Actually, we're going to end on that. Did you guys know? It's really hard to play in a media intensive market. No, it's never been mentioned. Did you know what media intensive market I'm talking about?
Starting point is 01:56:39 New Jersey. Nope. Oh, I thought you were. But close. New York? Not close to New Jersey, but family connection. Minnesota? Minnesota.
Starting point is 01:56:50 You see, there was an article written. And it was about, is Michael Russo and Joe Smith, who are two of the best in the game. I got to read you this. Hughes was distressed over Faber's injury, as were the rest of Faber's wild teammates. Of course. He said Tuesday how hard it was to see something like that happened in a game. And he's obviously referring to Brock Faber's skull fracture with a puck off the head. But hockey is such a fast and I don't want to say dangerous sport, but you never know what could happen.
Starting point is 01:57:16 It's just a scary play. Asked if such a scary play was also a wake-up call that maybe he shouldn't risk playing this season without securing the $20 million extension. Huh. He nodded. he understood the purpose of the question, but it didn't sound like he'd been swayed. Now, I thought that that people lost their minds over that. What people?
Starting point is 01:57:40 People on the internet, which, you know, we should have a song called People on the Internet. It's just, ah! I thought that that was kind of funny and sneaky and a little bit, but people are taking this like, if you guys keep pressuring him, he's going to leave. And I just think it's okay that the media acts, And I think it's okay that he goes,
Starting point is 01:57:59 yeah, still haven't made up my mind yet. And I don't think he goes home and thinks twice about it. And if he does, then I feel like he's putting too much into it. Come on. When did we, when did we start treating every hockey player like they were an orchid?
Starting point is 01:58:18 I know. These were the hardest guys. Well, they also asked for that. They spent the last half decades telling us how hard it is to play in Canada and how hard it is to play in front of people that care. So hockey fans, sorry, hockey players have been the leader of that. You know, we had, you know, Marshan and Kachukh saying, oh, yeah, it wasn't, you know,
Starting point is 01:58:38 it's not the least fault they lost. It was their fans in media. There's a lot of guys in the NHL who are pretty thin-skinned. Yeah. With very. Now, I don't think Quinn Hughes is. And I thought he just- Oh, no, I'm not saying Quinn Hughes specifically. Yeah, I know you're not.
Starting point is 01:58:51 I just wanted to say that for the people that might catch this in Hayden's bad at it. Totally. because, you know, hey, he's a wild fan too, right? And he's wearing a wild t-shirt today. I just, I want to make sure you get a favorable edit there, Jesse. The thing is that it's okay to ask questions, and it's okay if you don't like the question. And I guarantee you, Quinn Hughes will be okay.
Starting point is 01:59:14 He's going to be fine. Like, I suppose I understand people going, oh, that's a bit off-putting, but like that's going to be what makes him leave Holy shit. Man, it was Mike Russo and Joe Smith the whole time. Guys. Stop tanking my friend. Bill Garin's on the phone going,
Starting point is 01:59:33 stop tanking the franchise, assholes. You know what? What? Here's what we got to do. Cut a promo on Joe Smith and Mike Ruth. No, no, no. There's 32 teams. And we need to relocate 31 of them.
Starting point is 01:59:53 Panthers can stay in sunrise. That's fine. Too many people enjoy the lightning. They got to go. they got a yeah okay so Sarasota no um I think you put them all in Arizona Leafs go to Pensacola yeah because we gotta have it east and west so like we gotta just take like who's playing in Albuquerque's probably too big Jacksonville could use a team way too big they have an NFL team are you nuts right you're right yeah put a minute yeah
Starting point is 02:00:21 guys he'll be okay he'll be okay now we are running out of time there's one more thing I want to show you, and this is hard as fuck, because Quinn Hughes... Do we have an interview to get to? No, that'll be on Monday. Oh, okay. But we will say that Aaron Portsline will be joining us Monday. Yes. This is a picture that shows you hockey players are hard as fuck, and it has to do with
Starting point is 02:00:43 Nathan McKinnon after his fight with Brant Clark. Jesse, can you just bring up this thing? I just highlighted it there. Now, you guys saw this, and apparently as Nathan McKinnon went to the box, avalanche fans were barking at him. That's the rumor. Which is amazing. I love that.
Starting point is 02:01:02 He took, apparently, Brent Clark said something to him, but that's him after winning the fight and about to throw his helmet. Is there a better picture for a hockey card you've ever seen in your whole life? Nathan McKinnon is incredibly memeable and unintentionally funny.
Starting point is 02:01:18 And psychotic. Yeah. Yes. I want him on my hockey team. That's why it blows my. mind like in Colorado last year when they went out his body language was was like you knew he was pissed about how they went out in the conference finals yeah and people are like yeah you know like he can't be a leader on this team and have body language like that i'm like you can't have Nathan
Starting point is 02:01:38 mckenon and not have body language like that that is who he is and that guy who just threw his helmet and beat brant clark up i want that guy on my team all the time and if he's pissed that we lose good what i want him to be like the leaps who are like well flushed it move on no Nathan McKinnon is him. He's the man. That guy rocked. I would like him to score goals when the net's wide open. I would too.
Starting point is 02:02:02 Like, I don't know. I can finish it. Oh, wait for your edit now. No, hey. Nathan, you could have changed the course of history. Yep. If you put a puck into an empty net on a one-timer, you scored a million times. I don't care how many people you're fighting in game one.
Starting point is 02:02:24 of the regular season. There was a gold medal on the line and you collapsed. No, no, no. There's factual information. Man, it's so nice to not be the hated one on this show. Factual information. Fantastic fun time. Couldn't get it done.
Starting point is 02:02:40 Love you all. Then you beat up on a terrible Kings team and then lost. Cut one on the Kings. I liked my lead in line from the L.A. Kings preview, which I'm sure you guys don't remember because we did 32 of them. And I said, it seemed like Ken Holland's goal this summer was to surround himself with people his own age. And I think that was fucking killer.
Starting point is 02:03:00 And I deserved a little bit more applause for that. Ken Holland has definitely assembled one of the teams of all time. How about if we got Cody Cici four or five times in different spots in the line? He has one of the Cici's of all times. He does. Several of them actually. Cody Cici and his archetypes. Anyway.
Starting point is 02:03:16 Do you think Nathan McKinnon is capable of coming up in big moments and actually getting it done? His recent memory would say he's not. I'm going to call Drew. I'm going to call Drew right now. How did that Vegas series go? Where did this come from? It's all funning games in game one. How about when there's a gold medal on the line?
Starting point is 02:03:41 How about when Steve Dangles' most loved player in the universe, Mitch Marner, is on his way to the Stanley Cup final and Nathan McKinnon's like, ooh, how do you do? Welcome. You can have a free pass to the Stanley Cup final. You did this to us, Nathan. Did you like that? Maybe that photo is what Nathan McKinnon does best, making Americans cheer.
Starting point is 02:04:06 Good line, Steve Dangel, and we're going to end on that. All right. Now, I hope you guys have a phenomenal weekend of hockey for all the people that have not even seen a game from their team yet. Best of luck.
