the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
you know it's funny even uh even the leafs win they lose and we'll talk about that but i i don't
mind that what's more important is that that was an incredible night of scoreboard watching
it was insane it's good it is uh does Gary Bettman have a point game at no that still would
that still would have happened without this dumb format I agree game after game after game with
playoff implications and I think we need to start with the rapidly I think it's rapidly becoming
the story of March which is the Detroit Red Wings and their fall and the rise of the Ottawa Senators
because I don't think you can talk about one without the other.
And hilariously enough, they played last night.
And I'm going to just kick this off by quoting Max Boltman,
who's the reporter for Detroit with The Athletic.
The Senators came into Little Caesars Arena on the second half of a back-to-back
and debuted two rookies on the blue line because they were missing
both Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot, their two most relied-upon defensemen.
That's a situation the Wings needed to take advantage of, and they didn't.
You can't lose that game.
You can't lose that game, and they did.
Dylan Larkin came back and it's you know did get a goal got the second goal right they were they
were back in the game but going into the game Detroit was already a point out of the playoffs
Ottawa two points out of the playoffs today Detroit remain a point out of the playoffs and
Ottawa has leapfrogged them and they're in wild card two the Sens have won four straight and are
eight two and oh in their last 10 guys we knew the Senators were a good team we just kept saying
When are they going to get goaltending?
Now they're getting some saves.
And it's not two defensemen they're missing.
It's five defensemen.
That's how they got to the final two that they had to call up.
They actually have out Shabbat, Gilbert, Sanderson, Lassie Thompson, and Nick Jensen.
All those guys are out right now.
They're out a D-core.
Yes.
And Lassie Thompson was like their seventh D, and he got into the same game as Shabbat.
Did he not?
Yeah, everybody's out.
That's great.
It's like Cleven, Zub, and Belleville.
like it's great you fought last night too yeah which if he gets back to the bench do you go hey
man we just need you a little bit please don't fight and and like you know we're we're tut-tutting
the red wings for losing they did out shoot ottawa 35 to 21 which is not something ottawa is really
in the habit of doing getting caved in like that but uh when you're missing five defensemen yeah
Those numbers aren't honest to how the game went.
If you watch that game,
the shots aren't indicative of how outplayed the Red Wings were early on.
The way they got down those three goals was unacceptable.
Especially on the third goal where there's a play at the line
and they just can't break out.
McClellan talked about it in his postgame too.
He mentioned that goal specifically.
And they didn't take advantage of Ottawa's decor.
And he said he was talking about how they got the pucks in the right areas.
You know, you want to rim the puck around the boards a lot and force the D to go do it and make plays.
But then they would do that and they would subsequently lose every battle once they put the puck into the right areas.
And they looked so laissez faire throughout the entire first two periods.
And that third period, they finally turn it on.
Look who they are and they look good and look like how they should play.
And then it's not enough because they're already down three.
Puck battles are an interesting thing.
Let me just jump in and then I'm going to let you crazy stat from the Rangers game a
couple of nights ago.
That's where I was going.
You go then.
Well, I read a stat that I think it was during the first period, Ottawa Rangers.
The Rangers didn't win a single puck battle.
Ottawa won 100% of them.
Ottawa won all of them.
I thought the Rangers, by the way, finished that game because it's important.
Again, this is the second half of a back to back, but Ottawa had played the Rangers.
It was DJ Z-Bad's thousandth game.
I thought the Rangers had 14 shots.
Actually, it was changed after to 10.
Oh.
wow that's pretty far off hinge well you know because they yeah i know i'm gambling thing
it's but it's kind of nuts and i i i think jesse you're you're you know when i obviously i was
streaming the leafs game last night so i couldn't watch the sense game but i saw the highlights what
what i'm getting from it is that the sense dominated early and we're just able to kind
of hang on that's and that's what you need to do that that three goal lead they got once they got
that it was okay we're gonna sit back we're gonna get into our shell and all more played great like
Even the last 10 seconds, there was a couple unbelievable saves he had to make, and they did enough.
They knew they got up 3-0.
We're undermanned here.
We're going to do enough to sneak away with this victory, and they did it expertly.
It was really good by Ottawa.
You know, it's such an interesting group because, you know, this is a team kind of like the Columbus Blue Jackets, and we'll talk about them later.
We're going Atlantic Division, and then we're going Metro, so, you know, I'm trying to keep it somewhat of a storyline here.
I'm blown away by how quickly the senators have turned those things around.
And it seems a little bit like the Linus Olmark situation that happened in, I believe, January with the statement and everything that seemed to start to turn the tables.
And then I think Brady coming back from winning a gold medal probably doesn't hurt.
No, you know, you come back with some confidence.
It seemed odd to me and a lot to a lot of people that watch that these senators would miss the playoffs.
And it seems right that they're back in it.
Well, now they're the team that's hot at the right time.
They're in a great spot, right?
There's no guarantee they make it still.
You know, maybe they don't hold on to it.
But, you know, outside of the obvious, I think there's, let's say, three teams you don't really want to draw in the first round.
We keep saying Utah.
Columbus has been getting a lot of love.
Yep.
I'm not sure I want to draw Ottawa right now.
Do you?
Not if their goaltending is good.
Nope.
Now, the other side of that, Steve, is, as Jesse pointed out,
they're missing five defensemen.
And Shabbat, I think, broken a wrist.
So even if he's back in four to six weeks,
which is what the timeline supposedly is,
that means he's not back for the first round.
And if it's four weeks,
he might be back for the end of the first round,
but is his wrist fully healed?
Probably not.
Which, by the way...
Kind of sucks for a hockey player.
the the jt miller cross check on uh shabbat that damaged his wrist everyone's like ah that happens
a thousand times a game i'm like one day you're gonna hear yourself you know one day you're gonna
hear yourself that was bullshit hey cross checks that like potentially break bones happens a
thousand times well maybe hockey's not for you steve yeah well you know what maybe not uh what
did you guys think of this dylan larkin comment he said uh it's like what are you gonna do the
room is mad the guys are mad that was a big game for our hockey team unfortunate how well we played
against those guys all year and then this one tonight it kind of wipes away our record against
these guys because that was a big game but we're going to buffalo friday night so we have to pick
ourselves back up and that's mental toughness we got to pick each other back up and find a way
through the next 11 games he's he's right now on the detroit fall uh and we'll we'll get to the
de brin cat goal too don't worry um the again this is boltman again for the athletic the loss itself
is the biggest problem uh of course as detroit which sits at 84 points could very well need 94
or more to get into the postseason in a highly competitive field it's the circumstances that
make this one such a missed opportunity because it's against the senators right right of course
and i look at detroit's schedule going forward and again i'm coming back to the the de brin cat goal
but you've got the sabers friday tough tough flyers playing better oh tough they lost last
night but they're still in it one it's a bit of a reach but they're in it yeah but it's a reach
but look who they who the flyers need to beat if they want to keep this alive you yeah so they're
gonna be bringing it and you're on the second half of a back-to-back that right then you got
tuesday penguins who just got their asses beat last night and they're gonna want to win that's
not funny either uh thursday again against the flyers next week oh and then and then maybe next
saturday you finally get some relief it's the rangers um which you have to maybe um so so let
me let me go to this jesse uh can we pull up the alex de brin cat called back goal which was a uh
oh the offside offside because really detroit did get out to a very good start they just had
the goal called back and detroit fans are not thrilled about this and i have to be honest with
you i don't i still don't love these offside calls um i do think there should be a time limit on them
uh now i understand this one being called back but it does take away a pretty spectacular play
and it is the right call yeah well that's the thing right with goalie interference there's
this fierce debate with offside i'm like yeah that sucks or yeah that's not the spirit of the
rule but like at the end of the day offsides offside are or aren't right yeah yeah i don't
I don't know if Detroit fans are upset at this one.
Like he was offside.
Maybe disappointed.
That's a better word.
And they had a whole game to turn it around and they didn't do it.
Yeah.
As offside reviews go, that is significantly offside.
That's a good point.
You can't get down on this because he was offside.
Like that's a lot.
And you can win the rest of the game and you can score another goal.
It was early enough that it was recoverable.
Who is that?
Patrick Kane?
Yeah, that's 88.
Yeah.
that's he's a rookie he doesn't know right speaking of like i think this is such an
interesting conversation because like do they is can you call like call back and offside like
any point of the game because you said something about a time limit right um but they don't have
it as long as you don't once you exit the zone again then you can't redo it but as long as it's
still the same entry you can challenge so but man but what i'm saying is the after effect like once
the whistle's blown or whatever like can they still contact the bench and be like hey was that
play offside all right as long as the puck hasn't left the zone like that continuous play can last
forever in that zone and you can you can go challenge for the offside okay this would never
happen maddie but it like we've talked about it on the show before it is hypothetically possible
you win the opening face-off gain the zone play 20 minutes continuous in the zone
uh score a goal at the very last moment and then they realize oh you were actually offside on the
entry at the beginning of the period so we need to replay the entire period and also it's no goal
like based on the way the rule is written that could hypothetically happen now 20 minutes is
never going to happen but two is like that's a long time two is a lot that's a long time without
going with it like i don't know that's crazy yeah anyways thought that was interesting i thought
mcclellan had the right attitude post game in that he called the refs a little he's like if the ref
calls it at the line then the goal never happens that's so that's a very good point you should
probably see that yeah that's it's listen offside reviews 99.9 of the time are a lot smaller than
that he's offside by like at least several fists yeah i like i like mclellan's comment that's a
good comment yeah like so he's like we can't get down on that because the the reporters did ask him
like hey did that goal affect you for the rest of the game and and that sort of thing it's like
well like it can't because you know if it happened it happens and it's taken back and you have the
rest of the game to play but like if the rest make the call then that goal never happens and
we keep playing the game yeah uh but to say that it doesn't i mean i know i know he says that it
can't but we all know that it can right that does sort of suck if you're a professional athlete
playing hockey and you you score a goal and then they take it back and you're like i'm not gonna
play as hard for the rest of the game screw you get off my hockey no but like you know maybe you
play almost too hard or like your mind's just not in the right place i don't know i don't know it's
to me it just sounds like an excuse and that's a coach trying to not let his players cling
don't know give them excuses no excuses um carter yakum chuck who is a seventh overall pick from
2024 is one of the defensemen that filled in and the right side of the ottawa senator's blue line
looks pretty damn good for the future because they've got shabbat they've got sanderson or
sanderson left i think it doesn't they're both left i think uh there's at least shabbat i think
can play both yeah so but carter yakum chuck is a right shot defenseman got two points in his
opener last night nice goal uh very nice goal um and again you know this is the this is the thing
great teams are able to do this and i hope this is what's happening in ottawa and i hope toronto
gets back to this somebody asked me on the stream last night guys like what does it need to what
needs to come back in toronto for things to turn around and one of the things that i think
kyle dube has tried to institute along with brendan shanahan that i don't know that they
ever got to the level that they wanted to but they got sort of close for a few years there which is
you have a the pyramid system your top team is at the top your aoh sorry ohl your ahl and then
your echl teams and you identify guys within the system that play this role x role this role is
your role so if you're you got an injury on the ahl team and an echl guy comes up he knows that
he's the third line winger in the echl and he can be that in the ahl it should be mentioned
Dubas tried to institute this and then
the world immediately stopped and his
ECHL team stopped playing games that's
true yeah I'm not saying that that it
was entirely his fault I think no it's
just everything comes back to that right
you great teams great systems and this
goes across all sports it's like you
know that when the Patriots were at
their best they'd find somebody from
somewhere plug it into the system and
all of a sudden the guys of all-star
wide receiver this is the type of thing
that you need mm-hmm it's why it's
important also hang on to your first
round picks yes uh where overall useful pick yeah i can't imagine what that'd be like two years he's
in the nhl less than two years later too wow imagine and he shouldn't be um but uh you know
it's funny so you see the best of carter yakum chuck yesterday yeah a goal and an assist in an
nhl debut hell of a debut especially for a 20 year old defenseman and you look at his numbers
in 50 games 10 goals 26 assists 36 points why the hell wasn't this guy up sooner the second
worse plus minus on the belleville senators is minus 19 carter yakum chuck is minus 30 well he's
probably playing the tough minutes steve well you know i mean well he's exactly the kind of player
that the ahl is designed for yes you can make those yeah oh wow is he extremely talented but
flawed do i have the league for you right that's the whole purpose of the thing i also don't think
that that's a great team uh belleville belleville i don't think they're having a great year they
have uh the leading goal scorer in the league in uh arthur kaliev oh yeah is that where he's playing
that's where he's playing now yes he is okay you're seeing teams this year it's kind of cool
to see buffalo bear the fruits of their tank for all of those years even though they didn't mean
to tank for that long and same with ottawa where it's like they've been bad for a while and you're
seeing all of the the draft picks that they had over those years come to fruition and make an
impact on this team it's been really exciting to see huge and one of the reasons that Ottawa
Senators fans have been so bullish on this team like hey we should be in a playoff spot we're
just kind of getting unlucky here and if we can get just a little bit more a couple more saves
early on a couple more goals is because the the shots against and how there's been a historic
stretch to for the shots against total for the Ottawa Senators this year so far they're allowing
24 shots against per game that is first in national hockey league very low that's very low
if you go to january 1st uh till the march 23rd uh the game before yesterday they're 20 they've
only allowed 22 shots against per game that's great so they've improved as the season's gone
along and then if you highlight the last 20 games before that so january 24th to march 23rd
They've only allowed 20.5 shots against per game.
And as Sportsnet stats highlighted, that is the first time a team has done that in a 20-game span since the 2000-2001 St. Louis Blues.
Whoa.
And that was dead puck era.
Wow.
Part of it.
A 26-year record here that the Ottawa Senators have broken in the last 20 games prior to last night's game where they did actually allow a lot of shots.
which was their second time winning all season long
when allowing 30 plus shots.
This is a really good defensive team.
And to give you context,
the 2000-2001 St. Louis Blues,
that was the year Chris Pronger won the Hart Trophy
as league MVP.
And his defense partner was Al McInnes.
Yeah.
They were pretty good.
I knew I could just name the year and a team
and see if it would bring some context to it.
The Blues were the Blues of the 90s.
the sharks were the blues of the 2010s you know what i mean right uh i'm wondering who's going to
be the blues of of this of generation but that blues team should have won multiple cups they
were so good so many players in there mike keenan screwed a lot of that up in the mid 90s but that
was a hell of a team always they made the playoffs for like 30 years yeah oh and also i'm wrong he
won the uh heart trophy the year before but still heart and norris same era of teams i think i think
we'll give you he was on the team yeah he was on that to him and mckinnis you look at something as
simple as that i'm giving that to the coaching staff and the players for executing the vision
of the coaching staff that's why you're able to be down five defensemen and you call up two guys
from belleville and they're able to step right in and you win a game and and you know just a couple
years or a couple years a couple months ago travis green was under a lot of heat i was gonna say
like under under a lot of heat potentially getting fired to he has to be part of the
jack adams conversation a hundred has to be a hundred percent it's funny how the season twists
and turns you know one of the things about canada is we've got great meat like we really do uh when
you move to alberta like i did uh you get the best steak i think in the entire world it's just so
amazing but adam what if i don't live there well you can have it delivered right to your door
canadian meat via chambers chambers food is actually it's this sick idea where um it takes
the guesswork out of it you book an appointment and you start by completing a contact form this
is how involved this is you got to take your meat seriously you gotta uh we will as they say we will
contact you set up a phone call or a zoom appointment to create your order with one of
their trained representatives which is crazy we were all lucky enough to have some of this meat
it's so good and i've never been a person who can like tell the difference between
like cuts of meat and how good they can be but i could genuinely tell like oh this chicken breast
and this ground beef is better than the one i'm getting at the grocery store it's it's higher end
and you can see it when you're cooking it and when you taste it's straight up screwed up going
to the grocery yeah it's genuinely we had it we ran out we did the grocery store and i gotta go
back i gotta go back i don't think i'm ever going back it's delicious and the great thing is they've
got a meal analysis form so family size consumption levels cuts of meat that you like and we're
talking not just beef and chicken here pork uh fish all that sort of stuff and it's really there
to fit your family's needs so there's no wastage too so the money you spend you feel like hey i'm
actually going to eat this and they're going to again again deliver it right to your door it makes
your whole grocery shopping experience so much easier too because now you don't have to worry
about meat you got chambers and we want to give you a hundred dollars off your first order how
about that 100 100 this is a family-owned company they are in canada triple a all natural canadian
meat directly to your home 100 off your first order and they expect that that order is going
to last you 10 to 12 months go to chambersfood.com slash sdpn again it's chambers c-h-a-m-b-e-r-s
food.com slash sdpn sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to
them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's
the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor

at pmcfwalk.ca now moving on from that game unless you guys have anything else there i'd like to go
to toronto boston next and not for the toronto angle but for the boston one uh the boston bruins
heading into last night had the second best home record in the nhl besides the avalanche so the
avalanche were one bruins were two uh after last night's loss which was an embarrassing one to the
leafs in 2026 are you guys kidding me and like they're they're they are now third to the hurricanes
their points percentage at home is still a 716 it wasn't like a fluke either like oh we outshot
them we outplayed them like you were you got thoroughly outplayed thumped and the leafs
outshot you by 15 and outshot you in each and every period of this game who are you what's what
what was funny about that steve too is after the first period i thought i'm like i know the shots
are nine five toronto but i don't feel like toronto's out playing boston but no i agree with
that but by the second period the leafs so for anybody that didn't watch this game the least
took three straight penalties in the first nine minutes of the second and they were the ones that
scored yep they they got the shorty and what a shorty like it's never wavered all season long
the penalty kill for the leafs has been excellent no matter like uh they're they've allowed a few
goals since trading watan and wa where i was like ah well here it is and matthews too like he's he's
a penalty killer they've lost a lot they're fine they're fine yeah it's crazy can i ask jesse can
we bring up the um uh the matthew nye shorty can we bring up that goal is that possible uh because
i just thought of something and i've got a crazy stat for you but i think it's it's something you
got to see now while jesse's bringing that up i'll tell you this boston didn't lose its spot it lost
nothing by losing that game last night except for the fact that they lost pace with montreal um that
is a you know an important game that boston this morning could be at least tied in points with
montreal ottawa beating detroit actually did boston a huge favor huge and um now montreal would have a
game in hand on boston but even so pacing matters right and montreal could easily lose that game
whatever that game might be well it was yesterday oh you mean the going forward going for montreal
beating carolina is a big win huge and we'll talk about that but i think boston you know they if they
had beaten the leafs last night would have 88 points but 71 games played montreal has 88 points
but 70 games played again people are like well that's a game in hand yeah but you have to win
that game if you're a bruins fan you probably head into last night thinking literally the
opposite result would happen yeah you would win and montreal would lose yes that's the smart money
but it's hockey uh and you have to play the games now let's talk about the matthew nye's thing here
first mason laurie sort of gets bodied and i think uh it starts here at the point if we can just
forward it up a little bit here jess uh guys are it's beau grew and matt nye's shorthanded dynamo
squad i want a grue jersey i straight up want a grue jersey yeah it would go go along really good
with yanni hawkenpaw from maddie i love french-speaking leafs who wear 29 so the the
boston bruins power play has been very very bad since the olympic break and what happens here is
it's a misplayed pass nize gets in the middle of the pass to mason laurie and then proceeds to
outrace him
and then out-body him.
And what's crazy
about this is, how big is Mason
Lurie? Do you have any idea?
I don't know. So Matthew Nye's
out-muscled him for that puck. Mason Lurie is
6'5 and 218 pounds.
He's what?
Doesn't look like it on that play.
And this is then a beautiful roof job
on Jeremy Swayman to tie the game.
Oh, it's a beautiful goal.
It's, man,
this is why every trade package that comes up i i talk about matthew nye's like he's goku
like please don't trade this person how old is he 23 yeah yeah no no he said i don't wear high
in points last night by the way no i don't want it and look at this talk your shit matthew
look at this absolutely this is the kind of guy i want going into td garden going forward
this is i love it i love it and i think he loves being a leaf and i think he loves being king shit
um and i think he's where this league is headed yeah no you gotta completely blow me away to trade
this player i was very happy this happened because i was starting to get upset with matthew nice
and the amount he was playing because he clearly wasn't playing at 100 and he has admitted that
and it was a waste of time him being out there just running a cardio on 80 of his body and then
now he finally did something i'm like oh it makes sense that you're in the lineup now yeah now i
gotta ask you guys do you think this game is won or lost on the nikita zadorov hit on john tavaris
now it's important that we understand here before we show you the hit if you haven't seen it nikita
zadorov injured scott lawton earlier in the season with a headshot uh-huh injured austin matthews
with a hit from behind and could have really hurt Tavares here.
Now, people will look at this and go, well, Tavares is crouched.
You have to remember.
Zdorov called it five after the game.
The person who is throwing the hit has the responsibility.
It is not John Tavares' job to say, wait a second,
let me perfectly position my body so that I can absorb this.
He's going to try to, but Nikita Zdorov has the opportunity.
He could just slide his hip into Tavares' hip,
And that could still be a hit that takes John out of the play,
but decides to get his hands up.
And he's also enormous.
Do we got to start putting stop signs on the NHL jerseys as well?
We do it for the kids, but these guys aren't getting the message.
I guess not.
I guess not.
And it led to an incident, but I want to first play this hit.
So that's where Tavares is.
Remember, he's got the puck and digging it around, right?
So he's looking at the puck.
Hey, he's puck watching.
and then zadorov can you see zadorov can go the other way here and just take his body if he goes
to the right in this instance it's it could just be a body play it might hurt a little bit but it
can be a body play but instead he goes for the upper back it's bad hands up stick up that's not
how you're you're that's not how you're supposed to hit it just isn't no and he acknowledged that
after the game he did he acknowledged that after the game so i don't know why you're defending it
he's not. Max Domi
then scores on
the ensuing five-minute power play.
Here's Zdorov postgame saying that
he deserved five.
Nikitas, what did you think of the major call?
It was a major
call. I mean,
I tried to play my gauge,
wanted to be physical.
The lock were hit. I feel like
I don't know. I mean,
I think it was the right call at the end of the day.
Actually, keep going
because the rest of this clip is really good, too.
What do you think things went wrong tonight?
Oh, we were just flat.
I mean, we had, yeah, we were just flat.
I mean, didn't have emotions against Toronto Maple Leafs.
That's on us for sure.
Get it better than that.
I mean, it's important points for us at home.
And to drop it like this, it's embarrassing.
Didn't have it against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
These games matter.
Yes.
Just in an emotional level.
And I don't think that's him going,
ugh, it's the Leafs.
I think that's him going, like, dude, we hate these guys.
Yeah.
Which, absolutely.
Like, you could tell there were some words that were unsaid.
Like, he gets paid the big bucks to lay big hits.
Like, he gets paid the big bucks to punish his opponent.
And that's what he was trying to do there.
But you got to do it within the confines of the rules.
Yeah.
Nikita Zadar is also the most penalized player in the National Hockey League this season.
He does this very often.
I believe it.
He does this more often than any other NHL player, which is take penalties.
Yes, there you go.
And there's a reason they call him Big Z friggin six, seven, which is top 10 tallest player in the league.
255 or 255 with 257, which is second heaviest.
Easton Callen went after him right after that.
And this is an interesting moment because this might again, this game might totally screw the Leafs this year when it comes to having a top five pick.
It might.
It might not.
But we got to talk about the doomsday scenario, which we will.
We will.
But I want to talk about why this is probably a good thing.
Because this team actually seems to be fighting for each other a little bit.
And it is not being driven by the veterans who have been here forever.
It's the Bo Grews, the Easton Cowens.
Matthew Nyes is a part of it as well.
I'm starting to see.
Dakota Joshua did go Zdorov.
He did.
Later.
Which is what he should do.
Needs to do.
Josh was a big guy and he gave up a lot.
But Easton Cowan was also on the ice when Matthews got the knee-on-knee with Radko Gudis the other week.
And yes, he did fight Jackson Lacombe in the third period, but none of those guys did anything.
And Easton said, I will learn from that.
And he did.
Easton Cowan has dropped his gloves twice in his NHL career, and the smallest guy was 6'4".
He's good.
That's crazy.
Good.
Great.
Good on you, kid.
I think you just kind of black out and you go for it.
uh and and zadorov apparently he said he actually lived in my billet house in london so hopefully
my billet parents aren't too mad at me which is awesome that's funny that's oh yeah because
zadorov was a knight that's funny yeah they share billet parents it's crazy and uh matthew nye said
i was on the ice i look up and he's the first one in there i saw his gloves flying and that gets our
whole team pumped you know watching a guy like that step up and try to fight a guy who's played
a long time in the league and deserves a lot of respect i give easton a lot for doing that that's
pretty cool you know i don't know we all make mistakes in our lives or we have moments that
that could have been better moments we should have stepped up and they're they suck they suck
so much at the time and you hate it and you and you there's something about getting lambasted by
like a boss or something or like an authority figure and you know they're right yeah and you're
just your brain is trying all sorts of defense mechanisms and it's like nah dog they're right
at the end of the day they're right and do you ever make that mistake again no easton cowan's
never gonna make that mistake again now willie riley carlo who are also on the ice for the
gutas thing well i don't know maybe we've run out of time for them but easton we're right at
the beginning of his career he's never going to make that mistake again the next generation of
Leafs assuming nice doesn't get traded this offseason seems to get it and that is something
we've been dying for since the early Matthews Marner Nylander era man you lost Hyman you lost
Kadri for for a variety of reasons you can't you can't you can't lose this player you cannot lose
this player no I mean nice you mean nice I mean nice well I mean I'd like to keep both like but
I understand their need to
acquire at other positions
no you can't lose this player
no John Tavares
said about it I really appreciated
it he's feeling pretty tall right now
I guess pretty big man he was
going at there the way he
came in defense of me speaks volumes
to his passion for the
group and for the team he
plays with a lot of emotion you could feel his
excitement on a daily basis just getting
up and getting to play and compete I
remember being in those shoes
and it's so invigorating i think the world of him can i point something out about like the
leafs in the city of toronto and the fan base so all the questions after the game are about
easton cowan and all the fan discourse is about easton cowan and you got podcasts the next day
and we're talking about easton cowan and how great easton cowan is he didn't throw a punch
just grabbed him that's all you gotta do that's the bar the bar is throw your gloves and vaguely
care oh my god but oh yeah no it's a nightmare here doesn't it right to the fact that we didn't
do anything ever and this has been this has followed this team around for more than well a
decade yes yes without for a variety of especially yes that's all that's all you got to do that's all
you got to do that's the bar that's the bar there have been bad teams like bad leafs teams that have
been beloved because they they fought gave a damn it doesn't even have to show some pride
tanner janeau was laughing because he's like damn this kid's gonna get killed that's crazy
yeah oh man someone like tanner janeau is gonna kill oh that's me like he like forgot himself in
that moment just out of admiration for the kid that's that's the bar it's so impossible to play
here the fans are so impossible to please yeah bullshit go go ahead and look at that incident
right there jess i'm i'm wondering for you when you see last night the uh leafs bench after the
dakota joshua fight they're just slamming the board it was both benches like everybody was
really hyped for that it was awesome and they're smiling and like some people guys are i don't i
didn't see who it was but somebody gave a fist bump to joshua while he's sitting in the box
one of the play one of the leaf players came by and fist bumped him you know you've been around
this team all year and what's been clear since especially january but uh but even early on is
they were disjointed they were not in each other's corner um have you sensed since the matthews thing
a little bit of a coming together of this group i don't want to call it performative but they've
taken it personally that they did not stand up in that moment and they're trying to go the extra
mile here and prove to everybody you can't push us around we are actually going to stand up in
these moments okay no go ahead no no i was going to say it's caused a greater conversation league
wide right like and uh there was um i don't remember who hit who uh the goal the jets were
playing the gold knights last night okay and one of the jets got hit and shifley is like we're going
oh it was to brett howden and brett howden was like you could tell there was a moment where he's
like am i about to fight mark mark shifley but dude this is the price this is the price you pay
being an nhl player yeah and it's it's not that like okay this moment happens and then now they're
doing this stuff like where was this sometimes you need something to give you a kick in the ass
and maybe that matthews moment was finally the teaching moment for the crest of the maple leafs
and the organizational attitude and everybody who steps on the ice wearing that laundry to know that
you have to be there fighting for the other guys on your team and if that's the turning moment that
they need then the franchise is better off for it and i hope it sticks that's the thing because
right now it is there and i hope it sticks with everybody with each passing game uh it turns out
you know the finger curled on the monkey's paw when i think it was game seven of the season
the leafs are playing seattle and i said we still are waiting for the defining game of the season
and that one was it that was absolutely it now when we look back on this season and you know
years in the future it'll be the ducks game but that game where that game summed up their season
and we hadn't seen the season yet we didn't know we didn't know because the evidence in front of
us is the Leafs were made of tougher stuff than that for god's sake that part of part of what
made it so bad that Marchman ran over Stollers and no one did anything is it was kind of a surprise
like last year's Leafs weren't pushovers not really you know there were times they wouldn't
stick up for each other though not I mean not to the standard that you need to win Domi does
yeah not to the standard that you need to win but you know they they were made of tougher stuff than
we had seen in previous years last year the that wasn't enough though it wasn't enough
the matthews one like again i keep going back to this is the perfect off season this is the
perfect opportunity to go scorched earth with your leadership not necessarily on the ice but
you can have that conversation with the roster scorched earth with your management scorched
with your coaching staff and the matthews incident with gudas has given you purpose
you it's difficult to envision the team you want to be it is and putting that team together is
easier said than done but you know exactly what team you don't want to be yep that's great that's
good news that's the kind of what you need out of times like this where the games quote unquote
don't mean anything you need new information you need new information it's so important and like
beau grew coming into the lineup and being valuable that's that's good new information
but you're not going to create a championship out of it your team is baby shit fundamentally
and the league knows it baby shit you know all you know the media and the fans that nothing is
going to run austin matthews out of town faster than his team not giving a damn that he's hurt
from who cares if it's a dirty hit i don't care if it was clean you go after the guy that's your
captain right uh you know exactly what you don't want to be going forward and that's great news
now there's a thing in um there's a thing in uh corporations uh in armies in anywhere where you
have a big group of people that need to work together and it's defining what you are and
passing that along to the next generation and one of the things that the leafs have done and it by
the way it's called institutional memory okay so i it's it's a collective set of facts experiences
and knowledge is held by an organization's members or recorded in its documentation it
preserves company culture processes historical context etc okay look at you now the reason i
bring up institutional memory as i'm looking at the boston bruins stanley cup roster from 2012
or 2011 2012 okay uh 2010 2011 sorry 2010 2011 that's what i that's actually what i have the
next year's team was really good to milan lucic david creche patrice bergeron nathan horton
mark recces adeno char brad marchand dennis seidenberg um johnny boy chuck johnny boston
before he went johnny rhode island uh andrew ference um rich peverly you know these are guys
shane nighty no joke um there's a reason people love that team it because they were a team of
monsters right they were mean and one of the things that those bruins when they won the cup
and and leading up to that but when they won that cup you have to remember that like they were
interrupting the penguins they were interrupting an ascendant la kings team an ascendant chicago
The Blackhawks team that had won and should have won again.
They were the reigning champs.
Absolutely.
But that Bruins team, and although they only got one cup out of that group, that Bruins team passed that along.
And, you know, in the last couple of years, we've seen Krejci, Bergeron, and Marchand leave.
Big Z left, I think, four years ago now, five years ago, whenever it was.
Something like that.
They've passed along that Bruins brand to the next generation.
And that's why you see guys like, you know, McAvoy's tough and poor McAvoy's face all year.
Oh, my God.
Zdorov being what he is.
And they are getting these gamer performances out of Murat Kuznetdinov.
And you know what I mean?
Like, like what?
Lucas Reichel, who several fan bases are like, yeah, yeah, maybe it'll be you.
They call him up.
He scores in the first game.
I'm like, that's that's the Bruins in a nutshell.
That's them.
what i hope happens here with the leafs and not all these guys are going to be back we know that
minton's such a perfect bro he is he is um one of the guys that i hope or one of the things that i
hope remains is that learning experience from austin matthews for these young guys 23 year
old matthew nice 20 year old easton cowan bogrus 26 you know the the guys that are going to move
it forward and i understand i'm not talking about a murderer's role of talent here they're very good
players um i need that this sort of effort and energy level the sort of effort and energy level
that it you know requires you to skate hard to the bench when your shift is over those little
details really you know he drives me nuts with that that kind of stuff is the winner's stuff
and that's the beginning that's the baseline and the leafs have always never had it now on the
Bruins side Robertson
to last night had a
really bad line.
Yeah, on the Bruins
side.
What I find interesting
is the next four
Bruins opponents are
ugly.
They should have won
this game because
next game against
Buffalo.
Then you got
Minnesota on the
second half of back
to back with
then you got
Columbus next week
and then Dallas.
Wow.
There's you not a
much worse slate of
four games.
You needed to win
that game.
well adam shall we talk about doomsday talk about doomsday steve dangle someone put this
in our group chat last night and i was just like why would you say that shit
there is a scenario where the bruins miss the playoffs
win the draft lottery get the first overall pick and because the bruins moved up and got
the first overall pick it kicks the Leafs out of the bottom five so the Bruins would then get the
first and sixth pick it's entirely possible rebuild completely over literally completely
over your team is already fine and then you add to that James Higgins who you already drafted
whoever you pick first and whoever you pick sixth it's over the rebuilds completely over you have
your goalie of the future yep and now in swayman you have who was great last night yeah your decor
set your forwards are set you're everything's fine yeah great get congrats on being a contender
for the next let me check like 12 years yep the only thing that's a flaw in that thinking is that
the burns can't fall to the bottom 11 that they would need to get the first overall pick of their
own pick ah good point that's not as fun then right now they're ninth overall in the league
so in theory are they what they're a top 10 team based on points percentage the west sucks dude
the west is yo that's nuts so i what are you talking about i don't think your doomsday thing
can happen the the division leading ducks are 14th yeah what the if if the least were in the
West right now, they'd be two points out of a playoff spot.
Detroit is
13th in the
whole league and they're not in a playoff spot?
Yeah, based on points percentage. Yep.
Wow!
People are talking about the Mammoth. They're 16th
in the entire league. The Caps are right behind them.
I know. I'm talking about them like they're this
insurmountable boogeyman.
The Nashville
Predators currently in a playoff spot are the
20th best team in the league.
They're not even top half.
They're not even top half.
oh my god neither of the predators fall out neither of the golden lottery neither of the
oilers the capitals are better than all three of edmonton vegas and nashville yep
yo the preds could make the playoffs or get the first overall pick
someone in the pacific is gonna get a stanley cup that's like winning the memorial cup as the
host team like that's crazy the uh the goal differentials too are just embarrassing like
you look at the caps you brought up they're plus nine on the goal differential and they're
like we don't even think about the castles a chance to make the playoffs in the east and
you go to nashville who's competing for a spot negative 20 philly philly's above utah yeah yeah
philly philly is above utah if philly was able to win that columbus game they would have been
back in the playoff race but 15th overall in the league and they can't compete yeah oh my god man
it's the that's crazy the atlantic is tough and the uh central is tough at the top only at the
top the atlantic stuff all the way through oh my god wow yeah thank you for pulling that up
and i didn't realize it was that bad uh another thing that i should point out uh william nylander
with two points uh tied his father michael in career points that's what 679 points last night
that's crazy wow he had a i'm wow yeah wow what uh oh wow michael kneelander i thought he had more
points than that oh well in that era 679 points is a lot that was that's very fair like he was a
very fair underrated center for his time i thought he was very very good um edmund i thought willie
had a good game last night because he was doing the things that he's best at which is having the
puck on his stick underratedly because he doesn't do it with speed he's so difficult to move off of
when he has the puck he's strong like you can't knock willie off the puck once he has it and that
one uh breakaway play he had the one where he didn't score on that one um where he gained the
zone and he had it and he broke free like that's just he's he's just a tripod out there yeah it's
fantastic stuff yeah really strong player yeah part of the reason why i wish i wish he would
fight i feel like he might actually do okay but can i ask you what do you extremely have that in
his dna no i know what do you make of uh berube's comment about i know it was sort of like a joking
context but he meant it about willie passing too much and not shooting enough i think he's right
he's a hundred percent that's an offensive player who has to be thinking about offense all the time
i'm every time well with the exception of last night every time i look at the shot counter i'm
like well that's not enough every single time and like to the point where i don't know if you
got this because you were streaming it but like domi had already scored an incredibly sexy goal
yeah and something happened in the third period and mike johnson is like it's mocking him
essentially for not shooting still like because and he did inevitably get a goal no no this was
after he scored it was after he scored oh he's like oh god he doesn't shoot enough and i was
like yeah and then i had to go wait they're winning because of him yeah like re-rack my brain
but it's it's true and like the thing he pointed out is the same thing like with willie like max
is an extremely uh accomplished uh playmaker willie is too they can both shoot they both have
great shots that bit i had last year of like about max not being able to shoot like i did say that
for a reason like last year it was brutal but this year i think he's shown on many occasions
like jesus that thing's a weapon why don't you use it man yeah use it like so many times around
a two-on-one and that pass isn't getting through it's not and if they do are you going to be able
to pull it off well enough that they don't like heal it into the corner yeah or it's shoot shoot
the frigging thing yep unless you're steven lorenz yeah steven lorenz yeah breakaway last
night with the breakaway with brandon carlo yo he's zero goals and two assists this he might as
well just like give the puck to boston halfway through the breakaway and just be like okay
you can have it i know i'm not gonna score it's all right if he shoots it i think he should stop
trying to score with his first shot when he's on the breakaway literally shoot for a rebound and
you might bang it in um or he is michael grabner but from waterloo fake it just fake it just fan
on it and then do it again yeah don't shoot the first screw up on purpose yeah just like don't
go for the shot and just skate into the corner and just kill some time it'd probably be more
useful than yeah because the shots make sure the shot means it leaves the zone yeah and the boss
he gets possession what just keep possession he like he really is we have david camp at home
but like we do have david camp at home like he scores six or seven goals per season
and they're the most gorgeous thing you've ever seen and nothing else yeah nothing but he's he's
really good at the penalty kill and getting those chances like steven lawrence has been a fantastic
penalty killer since he's arrived oh yeah i like him i think he should play uh if they have if
they're if it's between him and callie yarn croak all day steven lawrence and by the way callie
Jaron Croak has a deal already set up in Europe.
Like he's leaving.
That was tweeted months ago.
I think it was the beginning of the season.
Yes.
It was like,
I think it was before Christmas.
Stop playing him.
Now,
the other thing I want to ask you guys,
because that had got 306 in the first period of ice time.
And Hayden,
our producer last night on the stream was like,
Hey,
how much ice time does he have now?
And this is in the third period.
I said 306.
And he's like,
exactly.
Didn't take a shift in the second.
He's got to stop taking penalties.
Yeah.
The penalty wasn't great.
Like,
or take the right kind of penalty.
him like don't have him in the line you're wasting a roster spot like you you have 18 skaters what's
the point of playing 17 why right why why dress posetta and then not play him i have an answer
for that because if you put yarn croak in the lineup you're gonna play him like 10 i'd rather
have posetta play three minutes and have someone else play more than have yarn croak in the lineup
playing 10 why are why are those the two options because the management hasn't done a very good job
assembling this team and the coach doesn't do a very good job coaching it what about other people
is what i'm asking about yeah use the use the ice time appropriately well and so jonah i was
i was listening to leaf report before this game and jonas and james were talking about how bizarre
Berube's comments about Joseph
Wohl were. Yeah, that was the worst thing.
Oh, we need him out all year. Yeah, stupid.
And the fact that, and I said
this on the show earlier, and I tweeted this
too, Berube is not coaching
for the Leafs. He's coaching
for his next job. He's coaching
to show the NHL, I haven't
given up. This team gave up
under me, and I'm
going to continue to put the roster
on the ice that I think should win. It's not
what's best for the Leafs.
It's what's best for Craig's future
career that's what i think is going on last night it worked out but let's be honest uh it has not
worked out great since the olympic break and uh and what they were saying and i thought it was
kind of interesting was like why why are you playing honestly why are you playing galliard
don't you want to know what you have you know i put nick robertson on the first power play unit
instead of playing him 10 minutes let's just see what's there just see if is he a power play
specialist and if so like does you know you're missing austin matthew shot on that first power
play unit nick's got a shot nick's got a great shot why not why not there's a there's a very
distinct lack of experimentation happening with this roster and even the even last night's win
in boston can't ignore that and one of the things that he's been forced to do which has worked out
great and he looks like a genius but it's really just down to manpower is play easton cowan in a
spot where he can be successful in the top six yeah after a full season of not doing it that's
what i'm saying right like he has to now and look at that he's finding success we've seen this you
know what we have seen this before with the leafs and we've never seen it in a good era of it
i'm every conversation i need to stick with my thesis statement please fire this person yeah
fire this person put lalonde in and go derrick you're gonna don't worry you're gonna be around
next year we need you to play a b and c how much ice time did jacob quillen get last night can we
find uh he killed some penalties at least at least berube trust him to do that i'm gonna go seven
no i saw him a bit 8 20 jesse what what is the number 10 13 hey that's because a lot of it was
short he played a lot of short-handed minutes freaking connor mcdavid i know how many minutes
did nick robertson get nick robertson 15 last night played 14 29 all right that's pretty good
hey that's not bad well in shorthanded minutes we're 422 that is correct wow now berube doesn't
have a choice he has to play him yeah i don't know if he trusts him but he has to play him
played pretty well i don't know i think these are the experiment things that we need
we need to we i don't want to go into training camp next year no matter who's here guessing with
some of these guys can they or can't they well they're they're getting answers right um despite
the coach despite the coach but you know uh you're getting an idea of the kind of player
michelle is and that matters because he's he's younger than you think i think he's younger than
grew and he's a restricted free agent you're finding out what you have with grew you're
you need penalty killers and it's good that even though they're not really playing quillen you're
finding out he can do it um roberts yeah i don't know i don't really know what you're learning
what robertson at this point you can't have michelle robertson and domi on the roster next
year that's clear there are no there are positives and negatives to each player and all of them are
incomplete players all of them can be useful pieces of a roster but you get too many of those
on a roster and then you just have a fully incomplete roster so what i would want to know
if i was the incoming general manager and again i think the guy that's the gm right now is the
outgoing he has he has to be it's a non-option uh what i would want to know is which one of those
guys is the most useful for what the program is going to be going forward and i don't really have
an answer for that i know domi's got some no trade protection but he's also the highest paid
of the three yo how did he actually michelle he might be michelle he's making 3.4 3.45 something
like that or something yeah yeah so it's a yeah maybe it's one of the two of them um robertson
requested a trade on july 1st two years ago you don't have to bring back any of them you also
don't have to do that if you really don't want to you don't have to bring back any of them
i don't know at least we're by the way the least we're apparently in on chinikov he got his
18th or 19th goal last night yeah that what supposedly it was robertson for chinikov
straight up but
that's a dubious masterclass yep like good player it it did not look like that was in there anymore
no and he's killing it he's dead
this this appeal to authority this reliance on experience that they want who the hell is dan
muse like a year ago this time never was dan muse never heard him it's okay to have new ideas
might will probably be a jack adams nominee it's okay yeah it's okay yep hi my name is adam wild
and this jacket from doer is now my personality in a nice walnut it's a moleskin walnut shacket
can i just say it should be what do you mean you like it your personality oh thank you you're way
better yeah it is true you know you do kind of like wow i do like him a lot more now that he's
better dressed that's great yeah and the thing is is that this one is actually it's it's i i haven't
worn it for the whole show because it's actually like my outdoor spring jacket like this is what
i wore in today instead of a jacket because it was nice and warm that looks like such a i want
to go on a fall walk with you well it's also a good spring jacket oh come on they're similar
that's right they are similar got it we're getting you know we're growing brown out of the earth to
green you know that's what we're getting to so here's what i think i think you should try doer

we do got to point out the montreal canadians beat the canes last night and what was hilarious
is the canes basically outshot them double as the canes do that's what they do though but the
achilles heel for carolina and this is where i have questions is goaltending freddie anderson
was in goal last night guys and he was bad and brandon bussey has been bad since the extension
was that's such a shame yeah i mean he couldn't keep up that level of play i know you're not
going to be 21 three and one you know that never happened but he's one of the he's honestly one of
the best stories in the league yeah this year not right now not in march i know and so i'm cheering
for him this is my question for you we've seen playoff freddie anderson and this is 10 years
later we haven't seen playoff brandon bussey so we don't know i don't want to i wouldn't call them
like a paper tiger or something like that the carolina hurricanes are nothing if not consistent
they are very consistently number one in their division they're very consistently in the second
round god i would kill for that but i do question what's gonna happen i think they win their first
round series but if let's say they're playing boston which are currently the playoff team that
they're lined up against do you think that that's a slam dunk series for them because i don't the
carolina hurricanes are in grave danger of becoming the carolina hurricanes right like all all our
compliments of them are the same as they were a year ago five years ago five years ago all our
criticisms of them are the same as they were they were a year ago five years ago like you look at
them on paper you look at their process yep that's a good team they always put themselves within arm's
reach right but uh they rarely show that they have the capacity to to take it so you know last
year i think it was jesse and i i don't know if you got in on it adam um like i had the islanders
beating the canes and we were humiliated because because they killed them yeah right um but at the
end of the day they weren't really close jesse okay they were closer than some but let let's
look at the canes 96 points right okay they're great great at home great away 20 win 25 wins
at home 20 away which is amazing great already great they could let do you take okay um carolina
versus boston first round who you taking carolina carolina versus ottawa first round who you taking
carolina carolina versus new york islanders first round who you taking carolina carolina
versus detroit first round who you take it carolina i think carolina gets out of the first
round if you give me a first round matchup for the carolina hurricanes i'm going to select carolina
carolina ottawa i think you i think you were way too quick now let's talk about i think i think put
it this way jesse you're probably right i think carolina boston is a long series i think carolina
ottawa is a long series yes that's not what the question was he asked me to just pick one so i
was just picking sides if you want to get into a long discussion about how close that series can
be and Ottawa has a really good chance of winning we can do that I do but I don't think that you
give the edge to Carolina I don't think that was what the game was no it wasn't now the game is
no but yeah but I'm playing the game I want to play okay I recognize that all right two more
teams Jesse yeah second round yeah Carolina Columbus it's a close series it's I'll take
Carolina Carolina Pittsburgh now can cross Carolina give you Carolina yeah interesting
You forgot the game before this Montreal one, they beat them 5-1.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Okay.
It's just...
I'm not trying to be disrespectful of Canes fans here.
I know they get really upset when we bring this up, but like...
They're in a class...
We're talking about them like they should be odds on favorites to go to the conference
final because they should be.
They really should be.
And then the conversation changes aggressively when we're like Carolina-Tampa.
and like you slam into that wall hard i haven't seen the sabers in the playoffs but based on how
they're playing now i think that's a pretty tough series too i can't tell who that is a nightmare
matchup for it's for one of them right okay i like that that's buffalo is either a nightmare
matchup for carolina or carolina is a nightmare matchup for them and there's no in between right
right i have a crazy saber stat for you guys before we move out of this division
um this is from josh inglis from covers and josh said since the kevin adams firing december 15th
2025 the sabers are number one in points percentage at 808 they are 36 and 3 that's that's
number one not real number one in goals against average with the 261 number one in safe percentage
with a 9-1-3 or 9-1-4.
That being number one
shows you where the league is going.
Number one in goals for percentage
at 60-64%.
And number two in scoring offense
at 3.87 goals per game.
And they're a point away
from being the head
of the Eastern Conference.
Yikes.
Scary.
That's a good team.
Now moving to the Metro.
The Blue Jackets win.
The Penguins lose.
The Islanders lose.
What does it all mean?
Let's kind of take a look
at the standings here
because these teams all played last night
and it's really, really important
that you kind of get the sense of
what's happening behind Carolina.
Carolina is going to win the division.
But first with the Blue Jackets.
And they suck.
The Blue Jackets won their game last night.
Zach Rowenski, according to Jeff Svoboda,
who is a Jackets insider on Twitter,
Zach Rowenski came into the play
in the third period with a goal and an assist.
He has tied Artemi Panarin's single season record
with his 25th multi-point game.
i think that's his 21st goal of the year uh wow and uh aaron port's line friend of the show let
me pull this up i love this um since uh since uh rick boness was hired jan 12th this is where
the jackets were when rick boness was hired jan 12th and remember two weeks prior to that
we were begging the leafs to fire berube uh-huh okay uh-huh back then the jackets were 28th in
the nhl wow they were 16th dead last in the east worse than the rangers uh-huh they were eighth in
the metro there are eight teams in the metro uh-huh today they are eighth in the nhl 20 spots
fifth in the east second in the metro crazy crazy
and there's an example so i was talking about dan muse and you don't always got to go with the old
guy rick bonas if i'm not mistaken is the oldest guy yes i think he's the oldest coach in the nhl
and he's been coaching since the year we were born in the nhl he started his career in 88 with
the jets and really what did they do outside of getting him really what they didn't really make
any moves at the deadline no they got connor garland right oh yeah you're right they got
garland at the deadline but like this this started long before they got him so like they got mason
marchman yeah that was their significant roster piece you know what i mean they the goaltending
immediately got better yes um but like they're i i don't think i've ever seen it so sharply
where a team made a decision that had basically nothing to do with the roster
and their fortunes changed so immediately it happened in columbus it's uh happened with
buffalo like what the hell did buffalo do what the hell did they do they didn't even fire anyone
behind the bench it's this has been one of the most bonkers least explainable vibes based seasons
i'm glad you brought up the goaltending last night like that first period bonus set in his
postgame like and watching it you could see Columbus was terrible in the first period and
they all kind of recognized that they shouldn't have their legs coming out there and Jack Reeves
was a large reason they were to stay in that game and it was only one nothing coming out of that
first period and the resiliency out of these teams I think is a quality that Columbus and
Buffalo share yeah as of late in that when they're down they're not out I saw it in that Buffalo
anaheim game over the weekend where they were down and they're just able to motor back and
in this game here you're off to a very slow start and we've seen teams many leafs teams over the
years here uh when they get down that's it and with columbus they have such incredible fight
and they don't start well but who cares there's still the second and third period and they're
able to get up there and they're able to hold on to that uh three two victory i think it ended at
and then you know you get great goaltending to hold you in the game and he made like a couple
really good saves in that first period just uh the big ones you need every now and again
they're able to get them right now there's east coast bias there's west coast bias but like i
think it's a lot of small market bias here jet grief should be getting calder votes
he's still eligible i was gonna ask is that yeah i didn't know he was he's 24 and uh he's played
he's sort of like andrew raycroft like he's played parts of a bunch of seasons um heading into this
one hockey dp has been acting up on mobile recently but he's played i i think the threshold
is 26 games or 24 games either way he's played less than that okay so he he would be eligible
since january 21st jet greaves has only one regulation loss is that good wow that one
regulation loss was two days ago
to the Islanders where they lost
one nothing. Wow.
So they just straight up didn't score
for him. Yeah, you just
didn't get any help. So name
the four teams with the best record
since the since February 25th,
the Olympic break. I
mean, I guess Columbus Buffalo Buffalo
number one. Yep. Yeah, Columbus
number four.
Who else has been
really good since then?
There'll be one that will Ottawa
Ottawa's number two.
Hey.
The third one is going to blow your mind because I looked at this and I was like, what?
I know the answer.
The Nashville Predators.
Good answer.
They're probably up there.
Okay, Steve, what's your answer?
The St. Louis Blues.
St. Louis Blues.
Nine, two, and two.
The St. Louis Blues since the Olympic break, randomly.
I'm of two minds.
Garbage time.
Two minds.
I like the Leafs playing good games in Boston and also Frig off.
The Blues are trying to hand this to you, boys.
Yeah, that's so are the Jets.
They're trying to hand this to you, boys.
Let it running on a runway, boys.
Charlie Coyle needs a little bit of love from the the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Charlie Coyle, by the way, played a great role in Boston.
Remember, they acquired him for like a third round pick from Minnesota.
He had some great seasons there.
Then he goes to Colorado and is just if you ask Drew, just not up to Nate, just not up to middle stat.
And Charlie Coyle fart boo tomato tomato.
And guess what?
he's on pace for 63 points this year he's 34 years old this might be the first time if he does it
the first time he's ever cracked the 60 point mark charlie coil one of the players who has aged
best in the nhl and i just mean in terms of skincare routine yeah did he drop it online
do we know yet just i don't know but every team photo looks identical yeah
go through his hockey db they all look identical he's a handsome lad his third line there because
matthew olivier's his his right winger and he scored last night and he has an outside shot
at a 20 goal season he's at 15 right now yeah you know you see matthew olivier's name and you just
think oh there's a guy who punches faces no he's no no he's a player he can he can do stuff he's
impacting this lineup like this is that's a really good team there's some different i mean one of the
biggest things that changes uh from regular season to playoffs is you're trapped you're trapped for
four to seven games oh four to seven games against matthew olivier and and hey a seasoned
bruin charlie coyle and connor garland man connor garland in the playoffs mason marchment oh that's
a mean team and different kind of toughness uh do you want to be chased around zacharonski for
four to seven that's exhausting that guy fucking moves man just severson's also having a pretty
good year buddy like it's it's sort of all sort of coming back for Aaron Portsline I think pointed
this out too in the athletic about Zacharensky he's 10 points away from tying Panarin for the
Columbus record for points in a season like I don't think you're understanding how insane he
has 77 points and Columbus most points in a season by a Columbus Blue Jackets he's getting an 87
by Panarin he's getting them oh my god like he's the lock right like that would be the worst odds
on BetMGM.
I don't know if it's a lock.
You don't think it's a lock?
I think Hale McCarr's up there
challenging him for that, right?
McCarr's up there.
Bouchard will get votes.
Bouchard's getting some love as well.
I don't know if there's a lock
at this point.
I think it's Wierenski.
Schaefer, I think, will get votes.
Watching the way Team USA played
and how mobile he was with Quinn Hughes,
that mobility, it's just so clear.
As a Leaf fan, we just never had that.
There's just something about that.
You watch the wild play.
I know Quinn Hughes took a pretty big hit yesterday,
but you watch the way they play and how a guy like that can just dominate an entire game even a guy
like victor headman in his prime still does it but maybe not to that level he wasn't flashy in terms
of speed but controlled the entire ice when he had the puck he was always fast for a guy his size
yeah if that makes a big boy yeah yeah no prime headman was crazy crazy yeah wronski is definitely
getting my vote but i i know the kale mccart truthers out there will probably be upset well
He'll win another one, for God's sakes.
Okay, who's better?
Or who would you rather have?
Okay, well, that's not what it is.
Who's having a better season?
To me, it's Wierenski.
Especially if they make the playoffs
first time since 2020, the bubble series.
Which was the qualifying race.
Against the Leafs, you know?
That'd be unbelievable.
I think definitely deserves it.
Yeah.
Second, Pittsburgh got hammered by Colorado.
And the reason it's bad for Pittsburgh
is now Columbus is within a point.
you know they went in the last game or last night three points out now they're within a point for
second place and the thing about that guys is if pittsburgh falls out of the out of that third
place in the division i believe it puts them out of the playoff picture because on the tie-breaking
procedure uh the fewer number of games played obviously is first the greater number of games
won is second excluding games won in overtime or shootouts or regulation wins as jesse always
points out the greater number of games won excluding games won in the shootout row the
greater number of games won by the club in any manner total wins and then number five is the
greater number of points earned in games against each other and i'm pretty sure that that would
put them if it was today and it happened and they were a couple points behind they're they're sitting
where the islanders are the sends would have to pass them in the standings sends would have to
yeah the Sens have 85 points Pittsburgh has 86 but if that does happen then and I think the Sens
are going to keep winning right and it's not that not that Pittsburgh is going to be out of the
playoff picture I don't know that that's going to happen I don't feel like it's going to happen but
look at the Islanders man they are a game yes Pittsburgh has a game in hand but again you got
to win that game the Islanders are right there and if the Islanders had won last night it would
be the Islanders in third place it's gonna be a dogfight all all the way to the end the Penguins
just got crosby back there's a little bit of oxygen yeah i don't know is malkin back yet
he's he's got to be coming up he is he is um dog fight all the way to the end like ask me to pick
today who the hell's making it i have no idea now this is gonna be really close it's exciting for
both divisions now i told you guys or i said that you know if if islanders had won last night
this is a i mean pittsburgh's probably on the outside looking in this morning islanders are
screwing up fuck they're the ones who bought of columbus i mean columbus did buy garland was a
big get marchment was a big get earlier in the season brayden shen they have for multiple years
but what did the penguin the penguins didn't really add and i don't know if they really
necessarily needed to uh but the prices i think were prohibitive and dubas was like yeah we don't
really need to do that they tinkered the islanders paid big for brayden shen susie also um you know
they've had great goaltending obviously matthew schaefer's been amazing but how do you let the
blackhawks go up 4-1 on you and the blackhawks are looking good by the way like they're starting
to get guys like frank nazar scoring again i think they had a couple other guys that were
in the lineup for the first or second time last night their system is starting to rise to the
surface but how do you let the blackhawks when you're in the playoff race get up on you four
it's a good leak two to one's fine four to one steve in the first period who sucks like in the
nhl who sucks uh vancouver i think honestly no i think it's two teams okay two teams where you go
man you suck vancouver so jesse vancouver and hilariously now they're gonna beat the leafs
like five nothing tonight i would say the rangers yeah rangers are bad bad yeah yeah the blue and
white and bad bull tonight the leafs are above a bunch of teams who might make the playoffs like
like it's just this season's so weird like no no i'm not talking about teams that have had bad
stretches or in the middle of a bad show i'm talking about suck right there there are no easy
games in the nhl none it's crazy to me that they let that one get away though you have to win that
game i'm surprised but they're getting away from you they're not the only ones right i guess man
but it's oh it's bad no you can't lose it you you can't lose it but you absolutely can you know why
it's the nhl yes sorry yeah so that is the the metro picture is unbelievable too i think like
the atlantic and metro bottom of the standings is really really exciting and by the way if we're a
different playoff system i know this is how we started the break but i'm going to just hammer
this ahead uh even if it was a different playoff system it would still be the same race at the
bottom of the right division uh end of the conference so miss me with that shit betman

uh now let's move over to the western conference where bobby mcmahon keeps scoring man and people
i had somebody on the stream last night guys go well guys i think you're overrating berube's
faults here like this they did not give berube the right tools on this team and and they were
flawed fundamentally flawed okay that's true but why is bobby mcmahon absolutely lighting it the
fuck up now i i think it's very interesting that a lot of the guys the leafs have lost in recent
memory have been scooped up by their former coaches right and uh interesting um mcmahon
by the way seven points five goals in six games since joining the kraken frig off he is a streaky
scorer uh-huh he's a very streaky scorer you know over the course of his season you look at his
numbers you go oh it's you know why why doesn't he get a little bit more respect well because
he'll score like five goals in five games and then go like 20 without a goal like that's just
sort of how he is but lambert in seattle goes out and gets him carbury went out and got camp
carbury went out and got lilligren um i know there are other examples i think we talked about
i don't remember if there was one with wah i can't remember if there's a guy behind the bench of la
um but yeah this seems to keep happening well jim hiller was the coach i think when lotten was
traded there was he not yeah but he wouldn't have had lawton and oh right okay yeah yeah but
lamb i mean lambert's the big one now the kraken did lose that game yes to the panthers and they
have not been good no so i i want to and i want to move i want to put a pin in that and move to
the nashville predators who i believe have won five straight and are in the playoffs as of this
morning and it's a comfortable lead because they've got 77 points the next closest la and
Seattle three points behind them so that means you got to win two games more than the Predators
win the rest of the year just to catch up and there's just no time there's just no time as I
told you earlier if the Leafs were in the West they'd be two points out of the playoffs this
morning which is not Seattle's actually five points back oh are they yeah LA's three Seattle's
five yeah that's a tough one Seattle in their last 10 2 7 and 1 what happened to the Sharks man
they were in this five seconds ago i know no the last five in a row they lost they lost a
heartbreaker last that was curtains on their season nashville just wiped them absolutely
wiped them did they extend sherwood yeah five years oh okay well then you're fine i think they
it can't just be the ferrara or love show they gotta end klingberg i guess too they gotta fill
out that defense a little bit more and i think they'll do that this offseason they do losing
ask her i've hurt yep but yeah that's you're you're just so toast it's a tough fall yeah five
games dude you win two of those games that's enough to keep you in the hunt but yeah no you're
dead you're dead yep nashville deserves all the credit in the world for what they're doing right
now they sure do they're scoring goals they're getting good goaltending like they sold so hard
and they're supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league and all of a sudden they're in this
battle so jesse i got a question for you and this is something that was posed last night i thought
it was an interesting one if you're the general manager of the nashville predators the incoming
guy whoever it is because they still haven't figured that out yet okay you're taking over
for barry trotz does this performance at the end of the season change the rebuild plans because the
plan is to rebuild and i think the predators that are getting into the playoffs with all due respect
to them are fodder you're cannon fodder you're playing the avalanche i think they should win
that unless it's a crazy story but even then for me this is how i answered the question
i'm not changing a damn thing because let's not pretend the bottom of the west
isn't sleepwalking to the playoffs but i'm curious if that even matters it because maybe
that's just what it is right now and it's probably not going to change and if you can just be five
percent better than that mid you're in the playoffs every year and you got a shot jesse what do you
think no i think you have to take your playoff birth into context of what it is and it's um it's
in one of the worst conferences we've seen in a long time which i don't believe is indicative of
the teams in the conference like going forward or historically it's an anomaly it's an outlier
it's just hey really bad teams are just concentrated in this one conference you're a minus 20 on the
goal differential you can't look at your team and believe no we got it next year we're stanley cup
contender you got to stay the course of what you are and just be very thankful that you're playing
really well to end this season you're going to sneak into the playoffs but i don't think it
means they're good to me they're the perfect team to be active at the draft like you have all these
guys who like a few months ago we were like man are you gonna have to like attach a pick to these
guys are you gonna have to retain you know with the seasons they've had and you know potentially
playoff performances like you're gonna be able to move Stamkos March or so that's interesting
the the crazy one that I don't know if anyone wants to explore is Yossi um and O'Reilly has
no trade protection except he has trade protection it's really stupid yosi is 36 though yeah any of
those guys want to move like stamp coast forsberg marsh so yosi they all have no trade classes yeah
and stamp coast did say i don't want to i don't want to wave yeah you can change his opinion you
can you can change it and and sorry what i mean by that um the reason i brought up the draft
specifically is that's a good environment for like a hockey trade not necessarily a buy or a sell
like i don't think they should be selling guys to get bad and like go for high picks or anything
like that you know especially if you're going to make the playoffs but like do these guys fit your
window also what the hell is your window that's that's my question because again you make the
playoffs but is anybody in their right mind betting on you to win i mean come on listen
they're no i'm talking about win the cup uh no no so are you making it just for the playoff gate
which is fine or are you are you making this are you taking this opportunity now well stamp
coast is still a valuable asset o'reilly's still a valuable asset yosi's still a valuable asset
i'm sure brady shea could be a valuable asset i'm not saying you trade all of them but a couple of
them marsh or so i think they'd probably like to move on from and i think he probably wants the
same you could get some pretty good pieces for that to me it's marches of stamkos yeah like
you know and the rest of them like maybe yosi's just a lifelong pred and that's okay um you never
know maybe they make fools out of all of us it's not like colorado's been screwing up yeah they
have they just killed pittsburgh i know but yeah yeah yeah for sure also they have the better
schaefer reed schaefer indeed the greatest i've always said this jesse do you who would you move
if you if you if you're gonna put the the screws to somebody on that no movement clause because
that's just a no movement clause team who's it gonna be alan walsh client zach laroe he just
resigned oh yeah sorry go ahead i think i'd be the outlier in that i wouldn't move a whole bunch here
okay i think i think you kind of you have the opportunity here to not move off of your vets
really and just kind of build and consistently and i think those guys want to stick around and
if they don't mind playing through a little bit of losing next season i don't know if trading
these assets right now would be the best move for nashville like i don't i think they've shown
something here in this last little bit that there are pieces there on this team like eric holla
you're not bringing back right he's gonna be ufa at the end of the season it's probably
unless you're bringing back on something cheap who knows but i don't know there's there's pieces
on nashville that i'm i'm like there's a decent team there maybe the correct answer is you don't
have to do anything that's that's why that's what i look at the roster and exactly what i think you
just wait you kind of wait and see i'm not in a rush if if you're if you stay good great if you
get bad again i'm sure guys will be open to moving this sell them for extortionary prices
at the deadline this question feels like a question for next trade deadline right not this
off like where are they at all these guys we're talking about are under contract through next
trade deadline if you want to move them you have the time and if you have time use it there's no
reason you have to move stamp coast this off season when you can trade them in 2027 at that
trade deadline if you are bad if you go to next season you get to that point you're good oh my
goodness well what nashville's back and then you build that way but if you're bad then then you can
move off of all the guys you guys are talking unfortunately the correct answer is also the
most boring yeah they also will have 30 million dollars to spend this offseason that was a large
reason that when they did this thing trying to build through free agency and acquiring all these
guys a couple years ago, it was like, oh my goodness, Nashville could be doing something
really great here because they signed all these guys and then still had all of that cash space
to build on top of that. And then nothing ever worked out for them since then. But you're still
in that position. So the good things we said about them a couple years ago still kind of hold true
now. So it's still a really wait and see for this Predators team. The other thing that they have
is draft picks uh they've got their first for the next three years they have two seconds this year
two-thirds two-fourths and three-fifths and next year first second four-thirds uh two-fourths
and two-fifths and then the following year a first two seconds and two-thirds yeah yeah yeah
a lot of draft pick get to it let's have the conversation is barry trotz good uh i think it's
time to move on from him but a good general manager could do a lot with this team you need
centerman yeah i think if barry trotz wasn't there and there was a more competent general manager the
team's probably better right now you look at the guys they moved off of like they're excelling in
different markets and what if they had kept those or made better trades is andrew brunette the coach
i wonder too you know huh that's a you know neither michael bunting trade made sense no it
that is very requiring him and telling him like neither of them made sense i was so critical of
the florida panthers when they fired him and i was like what the hell are you doing bringing
paul maurice and you find andrew burnett and he's he was so good that president's trophy season
and then they've just gone to three straight cup finals i'm like oh maybe andrew burnett
wasn't the guy yeah it would appear not it would appear not that was so weird like maybe we should
just accept that those panthers were very good you know what i forgot about the year um panthers
won the president's trophy with andrew burnett joel quinville coached the first seven games yes
yeah his record was what was that seven and oh unreal and huberto had 72 assists that year
dell his last in florida which is crazy set a record now maybe that's where you should get
traded the golden knights lost last night and the oilers won but i want to focus on the golden
knights for a second okay i want to ask you a very important question before we sort of break
down the game jesse steve jack eichel is uh the number one center for the vegas golden nights
makes a lot of money makes a lot of money scores a lot of points stanley cup champion 74 points
in 64 games yep stanley cup champion uh plus nine plays 21 minutes a night worse than mcdavid
buffalo sad that's true that they didn't get mcdavid that's true he got the cup before mcdavid
okay sarcasm um he's got 24 this year goals how many of them are on the power play
hmm nine nine jesse ten zero oh what jack eichel doesn't have a power play goal his shots a touch
of death what does not have one that's a weird not one power play goal in 72 games i'm stunned
by that i was too imagine my shock when i was told about that i was like what really okay and it's
true and what's crazy about the golden knights is they are three seven and oh in their last 10 we
keep talking about how bad the oilers are and how bad it's been and mcdavid's leaving practice and
he's pissed and there's sticks being thrown or whatever and there's fights with the goalie ah
maybe make a save tristan maybe you know listen maybe there's a reason to go to a market like
that where there isn't media there after every game because the conversation and by the way i'm
just taking a cheap shot as a toronto person i know there's plenty of great media covering the
vegas golden knights trust me the no the implication is the fans don't care well the implication was
that i'm taking a direct quote from a podcast where somebody said game 32 no one's in the
locker yeah no and the implication from that is the fans don't care um and they do but the vegas
golden knights cannot score they cannot score and when i look at the edmonton oilers they can't
really get saves but they can score and they won last night which is a big win against the golden
knights do not get many more saves no no they rocked uh they rocked utah last night edmonton
was great i'm and and utah are still in the first wild card spot the gene principe a bit no um they
had this kid in a utah jersey uh hit him with a pillow oh because it was a pillow fight i like
that that's funny i love a good gene prince of a bit what in i have a hard time and maybe william
carlson comes back and this changes things because they don't have enough centers and
marner's had to play a lot of center and that's weird and why didn't the leaves try that um you
have eichel and hurdle you should be fine you should be fine you have that's pretty good
what chance does vegas have they have 225 goals this year uh edmonton's got 250
they have 225 goals against edmonton's got 246 against
what kind of series is that because it sure looks like that's what's going to happen
it's it's got to be pond hockey right it's got to be but vegas are i mean maybe for edmonton
The Vegas are not fast like Edmondson.
Edmondson's quick.
Well, sorry.
What I mean by that, okay, maybe not pond hockey.
Maybe shinny.
Okay.
Just stick it pond.
Like old guy shinny?
Just no defense whatsoever.
Like, it just feels like both of them are sleeping giants
that we're all waiting to lock in.
Right?
And they can.
We've seen them do it year after year.
The difference is there's more proof of concept
with the Oilers in recent memory
um that they can do that that they can lock in and completely kick your ass
vegas has played a ton of really tight games this season ton of games with comebacks but um
you know comebacks are fun they're great they're useful they're not something you want to have to
do they're and they're both honestly teams that do it yep the the great thing about an edmonton
vegas series is uh for both teams all season long their games were never done vegas games are never
done oilers games are never done uh you know oilers are down three goals yep five minutes
left in the game you turning that game off no hell no you can't hell no you can't same deal
with vegas because they've been doing it all year that's a great series i think you know the quality
of hockey i'm not watching to see how beautiful your back check is score some goals do some
interesting things the pacific might give birth to the best series of the first round
now edmonton jesse and vegas met in the second round last year
season or the the series was over in five edmonton mop them edmonton outscored them 11 to 4
or 11 to 5 11 to 5 do we see a repeat of that in the first round this year
yeah if it's vague it's edmonton in the first round that's gonna be easy series to pick
that's that's me just checking that box oh edmonton goes through like i don't i don't
think it'll be close based on just how vegas has played all year long they haven't they don't beat
good teams and they went out and they got anderson and from what i understand and the little bit of
hockey that i've watched and again i have not been like watching every vegas golden night game
the fit's been awkward is there a disconnect between management and the coach
like and management is just going here's a player and coach is like i i don't recall asking for that
player like again okay i know i know it's marner right i mean the vegas mandate is go get the best
player on the market they got marner they got anderson okay are you happy that marner is not
having success in vegas uh like do you want me to lie to the audience or be like i would never want
you to lie to the audience i am not cheering for this player the second he took off the canada
jersey i was like yeah boo um but let me defend him okay for a moment because he's been beneath
his standard this season basically why did the vegas golden knights take one of the most prolific
scoring right wingers of his generation and great on both sides of the ice too what do you mean oh
Oh, offensively and defensively.
Yes.
Because I was like, no, he isn't.
Right?
Because Vegas is like both ends of the ice.
You got it.
Mitch, you play left wing.
I don't think he played left wing a day in his life in Toronto.
And that career began in 2016 and spanned until 2025.
You know what you get with him.
He's going to skate real fancy.
he's gonna put up a shitload of points and he's gonna play defense for you great sometimes
literally killer penalty and penalty killer penalty penalty killer penalty yes and vegas
is like we're putting him on the left wing and i was like what and then they were like just joking
we're playing him at center what no wonder he's struggling and no wonder the team is struggling
what are you doing why are you doing this i don't get that at all he still has 51 assists this year
which is insane yes but his 70 points in 71 games are his lowest point per game since it looks like
lowest point per game since 1920 when he only played 59 games and probably over an 82 game
series because i don't i don't believe he's been injured this year his lowest points since his
second season in 1718 when he had 69 and 80 you don't pay is it 12 or 12 and a half 12 you don't
pay 12 million dollars for good you pay 12 million dollars for great and you're not putting him in a
position to be great and haven't all season long so that's why i don't hold the point totals really
against him i think that that if he's playing a position he's not comfortable with on a brand
new team two different positions he's not comfortable with here's the thing when you
like mitch marner then the guy that was in that spot beforehand moves out of the way of mitch
marner right yes correct you don't try to plug marner in the other person needs to be plugged
we sort of talked about this at the beginning of the season like we were looking at like what the
vegas roster could be and we're like huh that's a bit of an awkward fit isn't it where and like
the guy you're giving him like his setup or sorry he's the setup man to like pavel dorofeev
who's a really good goal scorer great goal scorer great goal scorer
what else you got and they said in the opening press conference that i wondered about this too
because they were like well we're gonna go marner eichel and people were like well who's gonna shoot
and then the gm was like well somebody has to well it's literally a yeah and then and then
mitch and jack planted their flag in the sand and said no we don't what do they have combined
in terms of i think it's less than 40 uh yes and let me that's that's like 25 million dollars
well it's 40 i think it's 40 yeah 25 million i don't know if eichel's kicks in until next year
or not okay doesn't matter it's marner and eichel and combined between the two of them there's four
power play goals this year respectfully how are you fucking that duo up yeah how are you screwing
up that duo of players which leads me to think that bruce cassidy his time might be up right
because that's the easiest call here so we we got to marner because you started with anderson
because oh he's an awkward fit well there's a there's some very very expensive awkward fits
on this team and there's got to be a disconnect there because that doesn't make any sense
anderson since arriving in vegas 23 games ago three goals five assists eight points
minus seven that's not that's not nearly good enough but he does have a power play goal
which is better than eichel what that makes yeah no there's some really really awkward fits there
And I don't give a shit about the injury excuse.
So you don't.
William Carlson's a pretty major injury.
Everyone's got him.
Cry.
Everyone's.
It's this isn't the excuse league.
This is the find a way league and every good team has found a way.
Tampa.
We keep going back to Tampa.
ottawa just uh won an extremely important game last night with like zoob clevin and bellville
i don't give a shit about yakim chuck's first game basically is is the most important game
of ottawa season yeah i don't i don't care and you shouldn't either because that's not something
you can control you care about what you can control and one of those is taking one of the top
two-way slash offensive right wingers
in the league
and playing them at right wing.
And right now he's playing center
between Riley Smith and Dorfea.
What the fuck are you doing?
Because I think
Marner Dorfea makes a ton of sense.
Riley Smith,
like he's there because
he's Riley Smith.
Is Eichel hurt?
No, Eichel's playing, man.
Is Hurdle hurt?
Hurdle, I think, is.
Remember when he was traded from San Jose,
he went to Hasso Plattner.
Remember that Hasso Plattner interview?
has a platinum is the owner of the sharks yeah he did an interview uh with i think was shenping
uh from uh san jose hockey now and he said hurdle went to them and said guys listen can you trade me
because i got this knee injury and if i get hurt one more time i'm probably done and i want to go
after a cup like that that is a an interview that took place this year so we know hurdles
got something i'm sure everybody does hurdles got something that that you know could end his
career at any time okay but like i'm looking at the roster you just had up and he's still lined
up at center yes he is yeah and he's got 54 in 72 points who by what are you who are you making
better by putting marner at center what about your roster are you improving i think you're trying
i don't know jess if you want to weigh in here i think you're trying to spread the wealth but
putting a hurdle between keegan colasar you're spreading the poverty yeah keegan colasar and
brett howden i'm like that's not a great fit dude you're spreading the poverty that's play
marner's best chance to fix what ails you is by playing him in his proper position but that's
dorfayev he can play both sides dorfayev okay great so do that okay jesse is that what you do
i i think you need a new coach in there for a new vision on how to organize this team i think
all season long they've proven that they don't know how to mesh this new forward group together
and the results show it so i would like to see somebody in there with some fresh ideas on how
to organize like berube his best season was under berube and berube is going to be available i'm not
even kidding you know i'm kidding that's honestly berube is kind of a that's an interesting match
for vegas a little bit play a heavier style but but um like we've talked about like let's look at
minnesota for a minute who we've looked at as a cup contender all year but they're a little soft
up the middle even when they're healthy they're a little soft up the middle they have never once
been like all right kirill you're a center now and like i think that's a good example because
it's like all right here's this elite winger who is in charge of our offense we're thin it
we're thin up the middle okay so now you're a center let's play they didn't do that because
that's not what he is let's play line at center in columbus let's play yeah and how did that go
no it's different because it's line a but it did go terribly he's oh god he's not even a good winger
no i don't i don't know why you put him in in the middle but like like listen i i can't hide it
like everyone's been like oh the fucking leaves all year you need marner vegas needs marner
on right wing he'll he'll bounce back under a new system i think jesse what were you going to say
there i was just looking at some of the numbers for marner they haven't they had him taken 305
face-offs this year and he's only at a 40 percent clip in terms of 40 winning those face-offs and
four zero when you have a winger taking that many face-offs and he's not good at it yet and they do
hide him like on terms of those face-offs like they don't have him starting the draw
they'll have one of the other guys take the draw and if he's going to play center defensively in
that roles like he does a lot out there but i don't know i i just think you know you want a
coach who has a more creative vision here for this this lineup because i think there's talent there
yeah even in their stanley cup year you'd never say that they were the strongest team up the
middle like they've never kind of been that um so there is a good team in there it's just they
need to be unleashed in a different way it's also a team that was heavily reliant on and i can't
blame them for this alex petrangelo yeah who is a not only a regular season got a playoff god he
led them in points when they were leading when they got beat by montreal in 21 for the to get
to the final it's not a video game fellas it's real life and i pointed that out from the beginning
i'm like okay so you go out and you improve at that position which apparently they didn't because
they won't play him at that position but okay you improve up front who's replacing alex anderson i
think bullshit they're completely different players well sure but i mean i guess they're
just trying to inject talent into it no i yeah talent great who's your rock back there yeah no
alec martinez anymore either obviously he was a big aged out yeah right there i think there's a
big disconnect there two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every

17 18 did you guys you see this what is it what do you think it is just throw it out there i don't
know uh qualified for the playoffs well no they haven't clinched yet right that is also true
first 40 win seasons in 17 18 wow that is less than half of the season and they lost to the
sharks in the first round uh of that season but that roster included ricard raquel ryan getzlaff
cory perry silverberg kasha manson henry cogliano montour fowler lindholm ritchie
uh francois boshaman was still playing wow antoine vermet ryan kessler kevin bx uh what's 2018
20 years i know patrick eves was still playing none of these guys are in the show still i know
red one of them is the oldest player in the league ryan miller wow corbinian holzer
wow yeah was it was this game in black and white i know holy cow that doesn't sound that good
it was no they got well well they they didn't they they made the playoffs barely and then got
swept by the powerhouse sharks who had just come off a stanley cup appearance i believe if i'm not
mistaken uh no offense two years but i don't look at that team on paper and be like yeah they're not
they're a cup team they're not uh but that was the last time they could get it done actually
they beat the sharks in the standings that year but the sharks beat them in the playoffs crazy
wow yeah those are some thank you for that those are some crazy names crazy names the the sabers
might have made the playoffs more recently yeah that's crazy oh that's that's a roster i want to
see absolutely the the last uh sabers team we'll do that at some other point so this is the now
radko gudas said he was sorry and i did want to mention this as a leaf fan because i think it's
important i've got the uh the video clip there jesse if you can see it i don't know if uh i've
just got it highlighted there also see if the sabers have the longest playoff job yeah no i was
making a joke yeah oh yeah somebody's gonna i didn't really get it it wasn't great it wasn't
carlin you know it wasn't it wasn't the best i know somebody's gonna clip that with studios
nobody's talking about well i just thought i could mention yeah maybe oh damn man you're the
first to tell me that that's crazy i'm gonna take that to heart how did you take the decision as it
went against you i mean i i respect the league's decision i respect everything i didn't um didn't
like the point of contact either um yeah that's uh that's that's what i'm looking i gotta respect
I got to learn. I got to be better as a hockey player. I don't ever want to go out there and hurt anybody.
It's very unfortunate. I reached out to him, too. We spoke.
I never want to see anybody get hurt, so I feel very terrible about that.
How did you feel about the way the process went in terms of talking with the league and going over your history and things like that?
Nothing unusual. I think I tried to stay on the good side.
I stayed for a long time, I think over seven years since my last incident.
So I'm doing everything in my power to stay away, to stay on the right side, to play hard and be on the good side of it.
And yeah, that's the process that went down.
You mentioned the seven years. You had four suspensions earlier with Philadelphia.
Did you consciously try to change your play or alter it some of you?
Yeah, I think every player needs to develop as his career goes on.
It's better to improve in every aspect of his game to sustain the league and sustain on the top of his level.
So, yeah, definitely. Development, learning, a lot of stuff goes into it.
Can you just tell us about the play from your perspective?
I don't know. I really have nothing to comment on.
I really hate the way I'm not a fan of contact.
I'm not a fan of that. I never want to injure anybody out there.
It's a hard-fought game.
It's just, yeah, I never want to go out there and hurt anybody.
So that's from Zach Cavanaugh, by the way, who's a great Ducks reporter.
if you're following along um so i i think the thing that stood out to me there and i don't
know if you guys feel the same way is radco said i need to learn now this is a guy that makes what
is it three something working for the ducks yeah and when you sign radco goodison by the way early
on in his career especially when he was with philly he was an analytics darling as much as
he was a insane person who got suspended four times he was an analytics darling for the role
that he played and i look at no one wanted the puck when he was on the well can you blame them
now i look at this guy he's making four million his contract is up at the end of this season
and if you ask ducks fans they're like hey man when that happened they were all like hey we want
him gone too because i think that his play has slipped to a point where four millions too much
for what he is i don't think he had a step to sacrifice he's 35 years old still probably has
a role in the nhl next year maybe even with the ducks but when he says i gotta learn i'm like well
wait a second sure maybe because he did go seven years without a suspension but the style that
radco plays like that's what the money's for it's not the knee injuries but he is a psychopath that's
that's sort of what zadorov said earlier uh in his quotes about the tavaris hit like
yeah it's a bad hit but like he can't be worried about making that bad hit because that's that is
why you employ him totally is to is to be that physical imposing force so did like did radko
gutis not previously know not to need people i think he did i think he just he got got ahead
of himself he made a bad play yeah he made i don't think he's learning anything from this he made a
bad play and i'm not i'm not saying that as a shot at the guy um i heard a story about him from junior
and i hate it because it's never allowed me to hate him properly okay i can't hate radko gutas
to my full potential and you know you see interviews like that like that's not a terrible
person no but he's what you need to be in the nhl which is you become a terrible person the moment
you put skates on and everybody talks about what a great person he is apparently he's even founded
a school back home like this is not do we get to hear this story from junior oh yeah well no it's
not mine to tell oh why did you bring it up well i was hoping you wouldn't ask any follow-up
this is this is how i know you don't have a future as a hockey reporter you ask follow-up
questions ah and that's not you're not supposed to do that i'm too hard on these players toronto
media you know what you're all right you're all correct about the toronto media uh i thought it
was the lead-in to it yeah no where's the story and then adam started talking i was like oh we
i get back to that story we're not getting it it's not mine um i know i know people hate when
you do that and i'm sorry hilarious by the way yeah hilarious what you just did there sorry i
didn't uh my achilles heel follow-up questions uh john carlson uh recent acquisition had three
assists last night they also repainted his helmet they don't make his helmet anymore so the ducks
had to take it completely repainted post a video about it i thought it was cool diva but kidding i
love that carlson truba gudas all ufas this summer now i'm sure they traded for carlson because
they'd like to keep him around a couple more he's still got i think he's got 40 or 50 points this
year um so oh yeah uh he's he's got 50 points exactly truba i'm sure they'd like to keep around
too because truba was a big part of getting crider there and going yeah okay fine come on over
um gudas i think you know it's a question of what he wants to make because lacombe's nine
million dollar extension kicks in you also have to re-sign minchikov who did reportedly ask for
a trade olin zelwiger i think they want uh to continue to grow it's a deep core man yeah and
drew hellison is also there too and has has taken some steps it's a very interesting group going
forward uh i'm curious about that good as i'm not sure about just because the age thing but
you could justify bringing all three back i i think and the reason i say that is because of
their age who out of them even with the cap going up can ask for a raise good as can't i don't think
truba can i don't think truba can he already carlson's 36 too much 37 and and like what's he
make eight man i don't know if any of them get a raise uh carlson might stay flat
true but i think the conversation starts at hey can i stay flat
no and then there's good as who maybe you just i don't know you say if you want to stick around
we got to play you bottom pairing minutes because you got to get like even keeping john carlson's a
bit of a strange fit unless bottom pairing minutes and here's two mil yeah yeah because like you need
to get some of these guys some ice time like part of the reason mitchikov apparently asked for the
trade now again you can always rescind those things or teams could just go yeah that's nice
but we're not creating you doing that um they need to get more ice time yep yep which is why
maybe you don't bring all three back but i i'm pointing this out because i think they're in a
good spot right they have options there which means they have leverage there which is just
good across the board i think if you're the san jose sharks you're looking at at least one of
those three of those guys and going hey you want to stay on this coast oh million percent we need
we got ice time and we got rolls for you yep 100 you gotta you gotta kind of bring that over it's
it's uh it's gonna be a fascinating off season for the anaheim ducks um and i guess jesse do
you have anything else you want to add on the gouda stuff what did you think of the comments
we're running out of time we're out of time oh there's so many things that i wish we could have
got to yeah we're two hours uh okay so we had the pld no supplemental discipline on that robert
thomas thing are you serious you have to take down yeah that's that's one of the stupidest
most dangerous plays i've seen this season and he's getting nothing for it yeah and a couple
of things that you should look up since we didn't get to them because there's so much other stuff
the sabra and felino fight for in the lightning wild game last night was just a crazy fight two
uh former leaf teammates and uh panarin uh his shootout goal where he waits and then sort of
flips yeah his illegal shootout goal backwards you think it's yeah he went backwards like i don't
know i don't know why the rest didn't just blow a dead or say no goal he's not wrong yeah it was
illegal it was can't go backwards in the shootout i'd have to see the side angle hey jesse it does
look like he goes back have you considered it was sick though no that's a good reason to allow an
a legal play oh yeah but it's but your honor asked tim suslo about doing cool shit and it being
called back okay your honor have you considered panarin's chill like that yeah uh stupid panarin
