i'm tired i'm so tired that's too dang bad yeah it's it's it you know what um uh outdoor games
when it's minus 10 surprisingly uh exhausting and i didn't even work you two worked i didn't
work it was great yeah oh yeah you were doing some molson stuff yeah i was doing social for
molson it was very fun bit of an influencer boy and time i got there at 11 30 and we did almost
all our work before the game and then there was the game i wore snow pants for like 12 hours were
you warm were you too warm for most no no i was definitely not too warm um and i i had been outside
for too long you ever no matter how you dress there's a threshold and your body's like all
right you're cold now yeah like you're cold permanently until you're uncold um that was
right around second intermission yeah i was just freezing out the third and the vibe in the audience
was weird because we were all actively cheering for being colder for longer yeah come on overtime
come on over time yeah but also uh we won't be too sad in a way that's got to be good for
your system i think i think i think spending a day in the cold is good in the way that an
ice bath is good for you you know i think our muscles today are a lot fresher and they're uh
they're feeling better you know that ice bath does that yeah yeah no it's it's uh proven to
promote recovery of your muscles you think patrick marlo's wrong no you know what who am i to uh who
am i to say no to the all-time games leader no one that's who that's right you're right you're
right you're right honestly i felt like the best part of yesterday was willow smith am i am i wrong
in that better than the game i was impressed that she played like a full set yeah she played a lot
we were expecting i thought it was gonna be three songs and she's out like 10 minutes and then boom
but and you guys were down there yeah yeah she played like what seven songs ish yeah it was a
lot yeah and jesse had the mvp hookups uh yeah uh and he was he was we were streaming jesse had his
phone out and streamed willow on tiktok while we were at the willow thing streaming on tiktok
so like i pulled up the live feed that the nhl was broadcasting yeah oh are we in the are we in
the shot but the the jib was swinging above us so we weren't in the shot at all yeah i was okay
with not being in the shot i didn't want to block it yeah yeah yeah i was worried about me blocking
the camera i i knew i would either see you very clearly in the crowd or not at all oh man there's
a topic there tall and at a concert what happened to you but it was great and i think i think um
i mean alessia car was great so you know the arkells had to make an appearance it's hamilton
death taxes the arkells that's the canadian experience mess kerman was he was there
and i think you know like the game was i have to say the first period was sort of sloppy the
second period i was in line and missed all the goals um which really fucking sucked by the way
i i loved hamilton loved the like the stadium's really cool and stuff but clearly not meant for
the amount of people that were there because you have like right besides the concession stands i
want you to imagine any football stadium you've ever been in that's outdoors every time you see
a bathroom it's a it's a excuse excuse me for saying this but it's like a trough that you pee
right it's just a big long sink and they had one toilet outside one toilet just one there were men
and women there were more toilets in the parking lot that i parked in yeah i think the reporter
i should have i should have walked 10 minutes to the porta potty i wouldn't have spent half an hour
in line but i met an sdp listener there from a couple of them from newfoundland they just come
in to see the game and a guy from hamilton as well really nice people and that sort of thing
We had a good chat and kind of the second period I was just I was happy and then I was sad and I was happy and I was sad.
And then it was eight minutes left.
And that's when I got back to the seat.
You saw three goals and they were all for the Sabres.
I know it was my fault.
It was my fault.
The first period was funky because when it's snowing, it's so hard to skate.
It's difficult to move the puck and skate and get around.
So I figure like the first the first period has got to be a wash.
Like it doesn't count because outdoors it's snowing.
Like how you play NHL hockey.
and then the second period really got picked up and it got going because the snow went away because
the snow went away no more flurries and then it was a good game it was entertaining there's a lot
of storylines i love that coming out of it um but yeah not the great performance by the league well
and i that you can notice too the passes are not as crisp the blue line entries aren't as good at
the beginning of the game we mentioned no one's gonna block a shot because yeah that's gonna hurt
and i wish they maybe had um so i think the first thing you want to take away from this
i know everybody wants to talk about matthews but as a leaf fan my my concern coming out of
this is going to be the third goal where marazic literally lets it in you know from his own red
line fourth goal is bad too fourth goal is bad too but let's start with the third goal because
that's where the bad started before that marazic had just made a really nice glove save remember
but he's like, our section was all like, Peter!
You ruined it.
I ruined it?
Yeah, because you're like, he needed that.
Well, I thought he was getting good crowd support.
Yeah, he needed to hear the support from the fans,
and then he let in, like, two staggeringly bad goals.
You also blame the Brody skate goal on Mrazik a little.
So I've had a chance to re-watch it.
Yeah.
So obviously Brody kicks it in.
Yeah.
And it's from, like, the skate that's furthest from the net, too.
it's an unbelievable kick it's just i still looked at marazic there i'm like okay a teammate kicked
it towards you you probably weren't expecting that also why are you standing there it's
ultimately not his fault but why are you standing there i'm uh an unbelievable amount of the time
i'm like why are you standing there he doesn't he's he's a guy wearing pads and there happens
to be a net somewhere behind him goal three though steve yelled it out in the crowd and
everybody kind of looked at steve because steve's got a booming voice i don't know
he just said hug the post like why doesn't he hug the post because that's all you have to do
as soon as well because i mean it's not like i got like superman vision like i saw where the
shot came from and i saw that it was a goal and i'm like okay there's only one spot that could
have gone in and it's not going to be very impressive and then and then we saw the replay
You stink.
Yeah.
And then the second time, I thought Peter Morazic was in the net as the puck went in.
I didn't realize that it just went straight through him.
It was like, honestly, you know those mini-putt courses where there's the thing that's,
there's like the windmill that's swinging, and then the golf ball has to go through.
The Abe Lincoln with the mouth that opens and closes?
Yes.
From the Simpsons?
That's what that felt like.
It was just, it kind of just, it went off.
It seemed like it went off his chest and then dribbled through his pads
and then into the back of the net somehow.
They're not NHL goals.
Like, the game was fine, and the Leafs were undone by their veteran NHL goalie,
allowing two non-NHL goals.
What do you think about, because Kyle Dubas made comments before the game
to Elliott Friedman about their goaltending issues.
So, you know, he said Kyle acknowledged that Jack was injured, obviously,
which is a bummer.
And then he said, you know, Morazic's played 300 games,
and he's been a 9-10 goalie most of the time.
Yep, he's right.
he's right what what else did he say did he say he's not worried i don't think he did say that
did he say that he's been the worst goaltender in the entire national i don't think he mentioned
that either no because i was about to say oh good people lie too i don't know if he lied i think he
just stated facts that didn't answer the question which is what you're supposed to do if you're in
this position sounds like i get this is leaf fans here's here's i think a big issue here leaf fans
are not um they have not gotten accustomed to peter marazic um like the worst start imaginable
barely plays you know constantly hurt last year constantly hurt he's always had these bad
tendencies like you know getting flyers and hurricanes fans in my mentions like oh yeah his
foot get ready get ready oh where he is on the post red wings fans getting in on that too
okay he's always had a goofy stupid style and it but it all comes out in the wash
he'll allow one or two dumb ones and hold the fort make some pretty athletic saves and
at the end of the day no matter how he does it um you know he still comes up with a save
percentage somewhere between 905 and 915 is basically his whole career somewhere between
between a little bit below average to a little bit above average.
That's an average goalie, isn't it?
And that's all the Leafs really needed.
And that's, you know, you can look at the free agent deal he made.
In free agency, that is the kind of money that gets you league average goaltending.
But we're not getting that.
No, we're not.
And, like, he had – it has to be between the ears because he was not this bad.
like we're these past two games have been non-option games um you know okay so the first
period's a wash in the outdoor game well that would favor marazic wouldn't it you know and then
the third and fourth goals were really really bad the first goal is such a backbreaker though
you just score everyone's everyone's going you scored 40 seconds into the second
you allow one right away like in terms of that's the sort of goal we would criticize
for a goalie whose bar isn't so low right now and but the bar is the third and fourth goal
well we're just looking for him to not allow those i i uh i thought it was interesting seeing
your reaction both of you finally saw the wayne simmons clip from last thursday in the car last
night on the drive home finally got to see it and and i mean it's telling right like i mentioned
this on the last show but wayne simmons says uh jesus fucking christ is what he says i think he
says are you fucking oh is that what it is okay yeah yeah they're not neither is good neither is
good and i think the thing the thing is is that like okay people are like well you know camp will
be back in a week and a half it's only a few games what's the big deal well first off boston's now
two points behind them.
They had the opportunity
to get closer to Florida
and to Tampa.
They didn't take it
in the way that maybe they should,
although they did outscore
some of their problems
and get some points
where maybe they shouldn't have
in the last few weeks.
Totally.
Totally get that.
But forget,
forget that Jack Campbell's back.
Let me ask you this.
It's game four,
second period
in the first round.
Doesn't matter what the series is at.
Okay, let's say it's 3-1 or 2-2 or whatever it is.
And Jack Campbell makes a save, normal save,
but winces and goes down in pain.
And then you see him trying to stretch it over
over the commercial break.
And then you see him skate to the bench
and you see Peter Morazic's helmet comes on.
How are you feeling at that moment?
Horrible.
Right.
And this is what I, you know,
how could the Leafs not do anything at the deadline?
Easily.
I think they could easily not do something at the deadline
because
at some point you have to look at your
situation
and just go
can we afford to do all of this
you know
if it's weird
we acknowledge that it's weird Morazic is this bad
I mean I said it to
Jesse in the parking lot Morazic could be right back to
form next year
next week
probably not
No, I think this year is enough.
I don't know.
I don't know about this year.
I've wanted him to be good this year.
You have...
The Leafs have a budget here.
Like, that's what the cap does,
is they...
Here's a budget.
We have a budget of assets,
and we have a budget of cap space.
You know, you want to get a defenseman.
You want to get a left winger.
You want to get a goalie.
Well, I know you only have a budget for...
Two of those things, max.
Max.
And you're not going to get a great option at either of the two.
You can do a really good job on one of them,
bet on yourself at forward,
and then what are you spending big on?
Goalie or defender?
Dude.
The defense is kind of settled.
I think the defense is fine.
I think it's settled a little in that we can blame the goaltender
for the mistakes yeah and that it's not hey uh that got through to marazic because of a poor
play by justin hall it was that was a bad goal that led in by the goaltender i would argue the
goaltending has been so bad it's made the defense impossible to evaluate yes i agree with that
that's how bad it is i because i mean geez teams are gonna allow scoring chances man like
every team does no matter how much of a gem they're playing and they're all going in yeah
how are we supposed to evaluate the team when there's only one month this season when they had
over 900 save percentage so how many games they got before the deadline three i think so they got
tuesday thursday saturday yeah tuesday thursday saturday i tell you what shalgren starts all three
because okay if you've i wouldn't be surprised if the leafs are leaning towards what adam is saying
whereas this year marazic is that's a write-off we just have to write it off if you have already
made up your mind on marazic you have to immediately evaluate shalgren if you like what
you see in those three games good that's what it is if you don't then maybe you have to go out and
do something i think we see a move in goaltender before saturday's game i think shalgren gets
tuesday maybe even thursday we see maybe marazza goes back in for the hurricanes but then dubas
probably make something before saturday because we were after the game one thing we're talking
about is how dubas makes reactionary moves all the time yep he sees a thing and then he goes out and
he does something about it and this seems like an instance where it's clear enough to everybody and
you don't mean that in a negative way a lot of people when they say reactionary they mean it as
a negative connotation no where there's a enough built-up evidence and then there's a clear game
where that evidence comes through and it breaks and hey the defense sucks here let me go get
labushkin the the goaltending sucks let me go get the jack campbell train originally from la
and here there's something clear here where marazic's not going to work out in the long term
especially if adam's theory comes through that just he's never going to put it together so you
need to get at least something out there but what is that thing is it braden holpe is it uh
forsberg in ottawa you know so uh there's really only a hand less than a handful of options the
ottawa senators are always forgotten about as a trade partner for the leafs but for divisional
rivals they make deals together a lot they do yeah uh they make deals together a lot
the financial situation of both teams seems to be a match in a lot of cases whereas the leafs can
the leafs can take care of some of ottawa's problems um and ottawa can take care of some
of the leafs um sneaky there i think part of the reason we look at ben charot um as a non-option
is just we can't picture it like we have seen the leafs and habs make deals before and every time it
was icky and i don't like took me a while to like warm up to like grabowski even um placan it's
every time he put on a leaf jersey i'm like that's dumb that's stupid please stop that like
oh and he's and they made him shave what what is this monstrosity you've created lou um it just
it's so hard for me to picture uh deal with ottawa i think makes some sense interesting
it's just if i'm dorian i'm not giving up forsberg i bring i sign him to an extension
now and i bring him back next year what about the air mcguire though yeah what do you do then
you're thinking like a regular general manager this is ottawa senators do not have a regular
situation they're broke like they got to commit to one guy um decide if it's forsberg or gustafson
and figure out how on earth you get rid of matt murray yeah the the matt murray contract might
cost them a really good goalie in anton forsberg like because that's it's 6.25 million dollars
until 2024 off season so two more years after this 6.25 and for ottawa that's a lot of money
for a team that plays with their own internal cap or they're not spending to the limit i think
there's potentially a match there yeah i believe they're gonna have to give up something they don't
like but I think there's potentially
I'd send a first to the moon yeah I
think you got to do it I think you got to do it
I think you got it like you see here's the thing it's not that Jack
Campbell isn't the starter or that he that he isn't
good it's it's that Merazic
is having an off year and like I said to Jesse
in the parking lot like I say it to you now he could
be good again next year but it's
like Bobrovsky right when he's bad in Florida
Florida's bad well
so now if the Leafs do get
Forsberg and they have an intention
to extend him
so you're gonna
extend Forsberg you have to get rid of Morazic and it's probably not going to be a great deal
for you you're probably going to have to like attach something to that rocket to make it fly
and then there's Campbell who's a UFA and how on earth do you gauge what that deal is I have to
tell you I think I think that they they got to be sweating it him and his agent yeah have to be
sweating it because the way he started the season he was looking like a six seven million dollar
goaltender no leaf has spent more money this season than jack campbell yeah and and i wonder
you know the way he talks in press conferences and i i don't know maybe i'm deducing too much
from a press conference but do you not get the sense that the guy's just too damn hard on himself
yes like and i don't mean to say that as a homer like if you're a non-leaf fan you're probably
rolling your eyes right now go watch a clip of jack campbell in those press conferences
and tell me that's not somebody who's self-talk which is a real thing yeah is not too negative
i he has all the talent but man when he gets down on himself it's it's sad to watch it's hard to
watch and i love him it's a problem like marazic i can understand why he would feel bad right now
he's had some bad performances and he's getting it like he's sort of not loudly but audibly getting
like bronx cheers he's getting like even the glove save he's getting some like sympathy cheers like
hey that's great i could understand jack campbell i mean gets nothing but love in this city and it's
because he deserves it but he's got a team that's got to win the cup that's that's forget the first
round the team has to win the cup and he's got no contract next year and he knew like here's the
thing the way dubas does deals this is what i'm i'm this is a i'm questioning this i don't know
if this is true the way dubas does deals how does dubas do extensions what does he normally do them
ahead of time either way ahead of time or at the last minute way ahead of time yeah i can guarantee
i can 99.9 without actually knowing anybody or talking any sources this comes from nowhere but
my brain jack hamill and his agent were offered a contract this year and they said no and they
said no we're gonna wait it out and it's not there anymore exactly because how could it be
if you gave to me jack campbell's now worth peter marazic's contract
because we've had one month this year of over 900 goaltending if you think i'm nuts
remember that this and this is here's how i would go into negotiation and i love jack campbell
career backup has had one and a half good seasons dude i i think it was around the all-star game
And I want him to succeed.
I want him to win the Cup.
So don't think that I'm turning on Jack Campbell here.
Around the All-Star game, I said something that got me torched.
And I was talking about a Leaf goalie move then.
Like, you got to make a decision here.
And the situation has deteriorated so far from when I suggested,
I don't think this is good enough.
Maybe they should make a move.
And I was talking about Jack.
what if the question steve is you know we keep talking about how do you trade peter morazic
what if you trade jack dude like welcome back welcome back to the discussion from a month ago
like i think they need to strongly consider it if you can solve your goaltending move with that
yeah enough enough of this own rental shit but okay who's trading for jack campbell
like a team that's a team that's that's potentially looking at a a really good guy in the
dressing room a good culture guy good guy has had a lot of success with a good team a team who's not
heading towards the playoffs yeah i that's who i would say like if i'm chicago oh i might take a
look at yeah if you send mark andre flurry somewhere and then you just need a goaltender
why not just take a flyer on jack campbell you're not playing for anything and i'm not and there's
a guy that you could you who's a nice fun guy to have where everybody loves jack camp and there's
a chance dubas makes that move and kills it and they win a couple rounds or even the cup there's
also a chance he looks like a fucking idiot so but then so here's my question to you if if it's if
it's camp like let's just say it's a campbell versus a flurry and you flip them are you are
you taking the guy who's never won a playoff round are you taking the guy that's won a few stanley
cup yeah you like it depends how the leafs organization views this season um they have
to view this as going for right oh man they have no draft picks what are you like what else is this
you're viewing it in the context of history which is something you can't ignore and people
way too often ignore it but i'm putting on my robot hat and just looking at this individual
season is this the season to go for it um dude they're not getting better they look at in context
of history as well i think they got they know they know the last time they won a round that
stuff matters i think they're going well steve this is the more the more pressure this team
faces the more they wilt so although you know i wouldn't say that i wouldn't say that steve look
at look at the way austin matthews has performed and that's a guy who was accused of wilting in
the playoffs last year yeah but that was never correct that was never correct but that's what
but that was the criticism mitch marner had the same criticism both both those guys on that line
looking at what they've done under the pressure this year it's the regular season like okay they
performed well in the regular season but that's all we have to go on with this year's team it was
a criticism of matthews heading into the 2019 playoffs then he scored five goals in seven games
And then because the Leafs lost that series, no one cared that he did that.
So, like, what's a shame is over the past few years,
we've had a number of very good playoff performances from the Leafs.
But they all just get...
Never all together.
Yeah, they all get completely forgotten.
And that's actually a really good point, too.
One person, like, Willie had five and seven last year.
Willie was unreal.
He wasn't the greatest in others.
Matthews wasn't the greatest last year.
It was unreal in others.
they've gotten great goaltending that stole them games they've gotten really poor goaltending and
that's like within series here so last year coming out of the deadline i took a look at tubas's
performance and i went you know what hindsight will dictate how good this deadline was and
hindsight does not look on it favorably but i remember at the time going i don't know what i
would have done differently there was the taylor hall conversation maybe you could have gone there
but Nick Foligno healthy
seemed like a really really
really good match for the team
and if they take Foligno and Tavares
all the way through that series against Montreal
a healthy Foligno and Tavares
all the way through that series I still don't think
there's a chance Montreal comes out of it I don't
but
shit happens and they
lose this year
heading into the deadline
last year
was I don't know what I would do differently this year
is I don't know what I would do
I don't know what I would do.
I think it's easy.
You get a goalie.
You have to get a goalie.
They better not.
Then you go with the worst, easily the worst defense out of the three Atlantic teams.
They better not bring Muzzin back.
If you leave Muzzin out, that opens things up.
For the deals that we're asking for, if you leave Muzzin out, there's a whole host of
things you can do.
You can do the defense and the goalie.
Absolutely.
That $5.3 million, I think it is, $5.625, that's enough to get something done on both
sides yeah it's it'd be a detriment to the team to bring them back early i'm loving watching earl
schwartz tear his hair out just trying to figure out the math of the leafs cap situation heading
into the deadline because i have no idea um i mean they can't they certainly can't go into
penalty for next year i don't i don't know what this team is thinking i mean you're kyle dubas
all right um you're um you're six weeks out from the trade deadline or something like that
and you're like all right i got one of the best offenses in the league i got a guy who's competing
for the heart trophy mitch is playing his best hockey of his career morgan riley is making me
look like a genius with this contract extension i have an all-star goalie i know i'm going into
the deadline and i'm getting a defenseman and that's my one move and we're gonna have a really
good shot at this and now it's six weeks later and you're like what the fuck do i do i say it's
It's still get a defenseman, maybe get a goaltender.
I think you can break it down very simply.
Yeah, I agree with you.
The deals aren't complicated either in that you just need two pieces.
Yeah, but will they be?
I think you're underselling how difficult it is to do two moves instead of one
and have those two moves be good.
You know what I mean?
No, but you never know about the deals, how they're going to play out.
No.
It's saying, oh, they're going to be good deals or bad deals.
We'll see in the playoffs.
so that's when we'll determine whether they're good or bad deals no you're right and i think in
the moment you just make the deal and then you see in april if it's a good deal but what i'm
saying is we were talking about like some big names on d sure and unless the move is very large
larger than we're currently anticipating alex kerfoot is on the fourth line what's that all
about there's some more money you can move yeah so unless they get really creative all the big
names we've discussed i think you can throw out the window i don't think it was ever i was never
on the the ban that it needs to be a big big name defenseman like you i don't the top nice yeah it'd
be nice but like you're looking at four through six that's what you want in terms of d you don't
need somebody in the top three you're okay there plus the muslin coming back for the playoffs i
think that's what they should do like that's another added piece to your fence that's going
to stable a little and then you get somebody who's going to play it probably in your fifth defense
slot and then you're good and then you have jack campbell in a week and a half plus new goalie
to compete for that i like that there's a real stable situation here for the least they're
falling down the standings a little bit i think they're like all the way back in eighth in league
standings but it's still a very good team and it's tight it's very tight they're going to be
in the playoffs they're going to have a round one matchup either versus florida or tampa and it's
going to be competitive and i think if you get a defenseman if you get a goaltender to tandem with
jack hamill for the rest of the year you have a solid chance at winning four out of seven
i mean listen the leafs team as it is a chance of winning four out of seven they've been doing
it all year you know winning the majority of their seven game stretches but they're taking
on some real good teams when they get there man trade ice skating at nathan phillips square for

happened yeah so the question everybody wants this morning answered is you know he is going
to get a call from the league is it a suspendable hit or not now we talked to mikey stevens yesterday
and he's like, you guys forget that Foligno just launched his knee
into somebody at warp speed and got $5,000.
And Jake Voracek chirped that decision on Twitter too.
Did he?
Yeah, by posting an image of his hyper-extended knee.
Like his knee bending the wrong way.
Yeah, fine him.
I dare you.
So, I saw Kelly Rudy's post-game comments,
and he was talking about you have to suspend that.
The NHL is cutting down on cross-checks.
My question to you first is not will he, should he?
Okay, so this is, I was such a good boy yesterday.
I didn't tweet about this at all.
Because now I get to talk about this in all its glory in more than 280 characters on my podcast.
It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?
Didn't I do so good?
You did.
You did great.
It only took me to 34, but I figured it out.
I learned.
And 34 for Austin Matthews.
There you go.
Okay.
By the way, happy birthday this weekend.
Thank you very much.
we're ignoring, ahead of time,
we're ignoring the context.
Okay.
We're ignoring everything we know about NHL decisions.
Right?
Okay.
Your question was, should he be suspended?
Should he be suspended?
Absolutely, 100%.
Jesse, should, not will,
should Austin Matthews be suspended?
You should get a game for that, yes.
I, Adam Wild, also say that Austin Matthews
should be suspended for that one game yeah uh you know cross check rode up his shoulder yeah sure
i believe you uh i don't care it's dangerous we can't have the league with that now oh we've seen
this before and we've seen this and we've seen that guys guys the question is do you want this
in the nhl or not i think we can all agree that cross checks to the head and neck shouldn't be
allowed no we don't want that we don't nobody wants that we don't want that now
do we get to the discussion about consistency so this is so this is my next question it's not
should it's will will austin matthews be suspended i go to you again steve i have no fucking clue
no idea the you know i don't want to be the leaf fan who goes what about this what about that what
with it people um the most egregious one i got sent i don't know if it was from the regular
season or playoffs i think it was from the playoffs um ben charotte cross checks wayne
simmons and then um joel edmondson from at least half a dozen strides away cross checks wayne
simmons right in the fucking head right in the head and i i think he might have been fine for it
guys that cannot be in this league it's bad enough that fighting is allowed like that head trauma
uh punching with gloves gets you a two minute penalty and on very rare occasions of suspension
dylan larkin um but you can't you cannot if you constitute a hockey stick as a weapon which i
think you're within your rights to do you cannot hit someone in the head with a weapon you cannot
hit someone in the head with an object you can't i love him he's my team's best player uh he's you
know competing for mvp you can't do that you can't do that and the lead up to this jesse's got it
playing right now doleen is screwing with him he's definitely screwing with him does doleen cross
check him just I saw I saw oh yeah Darlene tried to cowbell him no he didn't no he didn't that's
a stick lift there it is again shoves him down that's a stick lift and like I know some people
wanted him to fight in that situation that beating up Rasmus Darlene wouldn't have made me feel
better I think for a few seconds it would have been like all right Austin dropping the gloves
Oh, it's Darlene?
Rasmus Darlene?
What does that imply?
Well, he's big.
And he probably wins.
He's tall.
Oh, you mean...
I don't think Matthews is winning that fight.
Are you joking me?
Matthews has like 40 pounds on that child.
All right.
He would have beaten the brakes off him.
You think so?
I don't know.
But also, I don't want my goal scorer,
I don't want my team's best player and leading goal scorer
with his surgically repaired wrist
getting into a fight with anybody.
And I know, you know, this is the old Ken Reed adage,
room, got to have a room.
Listen, beginning, middle, and end,
Matthews shouldn't be getting in a fight.
God bless Michael Bunting right there, flying in.
That's his role on that line.
When they're not scoring goals
or trying to do better for their team,
because they are one of the best lines in the NHL,
Bunting should see the second Matthews is upset
and fly in.
I'm upset he didn't confetti gloves the situation.
Just confetti gloves.
just go nuts he did on dylan cousins later on he did on dylan cousins later on and by the way
what did i say last week i said there's it's two three four on one all the time and there was a
situation i don't know if it was bunting or mckea but here comes tage thompson third third man in
listen uh stop the honor stop the everything just be absolute brutes out there two on one three on
one guys gloves off punch them you're allowed you're allowed in this league it's literally
allowed and here's here's another observation here uh Leafs get pushed around and it's not
getting called Nazem Kadri loses his cool gets suspended against the Bruins
Jets are running around stuff's not getting called game gets out of hand Jason Spezza
get suspended for doing something stupid it's very stupid yeah leafs are getting pushed around
they're losing this game i'm not even accusing the sabers of being dirty but they're getting
pushed around and they're losing this game and they're embarrassed and matthews is probably
going to get suspended here so this team i don't think you can change the physical the the the
confrontation culture of this team by getting one tough guy they do not handle conflict well
they're never the aggressor they never start it and they only seem to get involved when there's
the red mist there and then you're suspended and then you're of no use because the ref the ref
watched everything that darling did to matthews which i have to be honest with you in a hockey
sense all of it was was a penalty right all it was it was a penalty the puck had moved on
it the puck was at center ice when all that happened when you watch that replay the puck
is at center ice yeah so the so the ref is so it's it could be holding it could be interference
it could be roughing it could be a bunch of different things but as soon as matthews retaliates
you see that arm go up as soon as it happens so okay the thing i like least about that so a lot
of that is just bumping and you know stick lifting and and net front battle which they are trying to
crack down on the cross checks dalene i thought did a good job of uh avoiding uh doing something
like that a cross check what i don't like is when he's essentially shoving matthews into the net
that's what i'm talking about like you that's a penalty at that point yeah because he can't do
anything and like the goaltender cannot operate this is gonna if the leaves do end up scoring here
it's going to result in a review of something surely so i thought it could have been called
the the ref in the background dolly and hits him nothing dolly and hits him nothing dolly
and hits him nothing here comes matthews hand goes up in the air um this team
they don't have a good read
of how the game is called so they just don't and and you know people who want the game called a
certain way talk about it with a certain defeat in their voice like me i was listening to 32
thoughts because i i was behind on it on the way here and frege supposedly got lit up um a couple
games ago i didn't hear it i was working on my video um but fans were talking about the the non
call from the coyotes game okay oh that would be the chikrin yeah they were talking about the week
of non-calls the the three the trifecta that we had on friday and frege is like well what do you
expect yeah and that's not frege being an old man frege has always been on the side of they should
call more penalties star players should draw more penalties it's uh the nba allows their stars to
flourish the nhl does not as the playoffs go on nba stars get better as the playoffs go on nhl
stars get worse that's how it and that's why you can't have your best players making another first
round like conor mcdavid and leon dry sidle they're not allowed to be themselves and so that's
what frege believes that's how he believes it should go but he's given up the fight on it ever
changing and so have i so have i it's not going to change guys so the leafs need to cope with this
better instead of hoping for change be the change because it's not going to change i think you
should still criticize referees when they make bad calls i agree but it feels does it not feel
like wasted air but that's uh like i'm i'm about hey i'm not gonna get a defeatist attitude about
it i'm just hammering these referees you know like i'm not like i'm gonna accept the bad refereeing
i'm gonna move on no if there's if there's egregious calls i'm gonna hammer them and i'm
to do it every single time and it may never change and i'll be screaming till i can no longer scream
but i'm gonna keep doing that i'm gonna end the fight i have hitched my wagon and so have you
and so have adam to a bad league it is no no no it's not a good one i disagree it's a bad league
and it's not good no good leagues change when something's bad this is something that has always
been and they don't change it it's bad badly but if if there may change it like i'm i'm asking for
like simple change like a two minute report like that'd be a simple change just you won't get it
maybe one day i appreciate your optimism jesse listen i i got x amount of years on this earth
i've already used up 34 of them and uh i'm i'm done i give up i give up i think i think going
at it at things would be like a finality like that'll never happen is a wrong way to go about
thing like there you have to leave room for a possible i also think that there's more change
now in the last five years in the nhl because of fans being pissed off uh than there has been
in the previous 20 i really do believe that where oh come on steve don't don't do that oh come on
You said it.
Give me an example.
Everything from the social movements like BLM,
we're actually having acknowledgement conversations about that,
to actual rule changes too.
They were disappointing in that regard.
I agree, but at least we forced them to do something.
Look what happened with Kyle Beach.
It was fans.
It was people that watched the episode.
It was the people that shared Rick West's.
And I am not, by the way, not conflating the two.
No, I know.
But to say that the NHL hasn't had to act due to its pressure from its fans,
that's wrong.
It's wrong.
Adam.
Steve.
whenever they act it's half measures right but it's something oh is that the bar well you're
saying nothing and i'm saying something yeah you are claiming that nothing will change i'm claiming
that that's not true okay so i'll upgrade to something that might as well be nothing can we
meet there no i think that i think any change here is a good thing and i think the more you look you
make this regime and this and this whole it's so bizarre the way that the nhl handles referees like
Like when they were announcing the referees yesterday, I'm like, I don't know who the
fuck these people are.
And I think it's important when we're talking about judging a game that we know the refs
as well as we know the players.
I actually do.
I think that's kind of crazy to, you know, people like, oh, who pays attention to the
ref?
Well, if I knew the way a ref was going to ref a game, I could guarantee the players
know their styles.
Fans should know.
The players know.
Scouting the refs is such a great resource for that, right?
The players know who's reffing the games and what kind of calls they'll get that night.
A thousand percent.
They know them on their first-name basis, and they know what they're going into.
And what I don't like and I don't appreciate is the fact that the NHL protects these people
more than they protect Austin Matthews and Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby
and Alexander Ovechkin and all these other players.
Sidney Crosby's been in the league since 2005.
He's never complained.
Sidney Crosby, he's never complained publicly.
Come on.
Adam, how dare you?
Has he really ever?
To my face?
I know he complains to the refs.
Adam.
Oh, well, yeah.
So not in the media.
Yeah, he's never complained in the media.
I think you guys are, that's something you guys are saying.
I was like, whoa.
No, no, no.
Sidney Crosby's whole first seven years of his career, his whole thing was everybody
called him a crybaby.
That was his reputation.
Those were the words that he complained to me.
Best player in the world, whiner.
But he never takes it to the media because the NHL will find you and it'll make you look
bad.
Matthews didn't either.
Matthews didn't either.
But why?
But he didn't.
But I have a thing with that.
Why can't you say, hey, the ref didn't have a good night?
If you say the ref didn't have a good night, it's a $25,000 fine.
Why?
so I should point out Gabriel
did not get fined which
I thought slam dunk he was very
measured in the way he had his statement and
I think he did a great job and that he avoided the fine
kid gloves you know
you
know
whenever you
criticize a ref you have
to do it like you're bathing a newborn in the
sink
you do I agree with you and I
think that's wrong and I think if we
if fans pushed for that more always been that way but but it wasn't you know here's the thing
it wasn't that way in the nba and then it is and i think no no you still can't you can't go to the
media and talk about refs you'll get fined the refs have to at least be accountable to the media
yes yes but the players can't do it okay fair enough but at least the refs are accountable
the fines are still the same way across right refs are accountable yeah though a little bit
more anyway a little bit more of course so that's that's that's what i'm saying and i don't need the
I don't need the players going, that fucking ref's an idiot.
I don't need that.
I don't think that's important or constructive.
They do that during play.
They do.
Okay, so I think we're getting away from the point here.
Until the league makes a change, which I am skeptical of and you maintain an optimism for.
If we push for it.
Yeah.
Until the league makes a change, which we can acknowledge they have not, the Leafs need to handle this differently.
they have to and in fairness to austin matthews i think they tried the other way okay ben charott's
grabbing me i'm just gonna let him ragdoll me and i'm just not gonna say anything and not saying
anything and not doing anything hasn't gotten him anywhere so now he screams now he screams you're a
fucking joke right in their face and it's only gonna hurt him and he's gonna have to go back now
now he's gonna go have to go back to doing nothing and maybe maybe when you come into the league
here's a strategy maybe when you come into the league from the moment your feet touch nhl ice
scream you're a shithead you're a fucking idiot you're a joke every penalty you take the first
few games you should go out there and intentionally take a bunch of penalties and scream in the
referee's face that way you have somewhere to go because you can back it off hey he's a lot
back it off and they go you know what he's matured matthews came in mature and they just thought he
didn't speak and now he's screaming and now he's got to go back no when you get into the league
call the ref every name you can um you know i don't disagree i don't disagree i think that's
a good strategy it is a good strategy maybe maybe if you take a bunch of penalties it's not a great
strategy for your coach and still he trusts in you it worked for sydney crosby did it not it did
it did and mcdavid made the same mistake okay fair david made the same mistake i'm gonna be
good about this i okay tell you what they're not gonna call anything i'm captain elbow
and it didn't work it super didn't work and now he's got to go backward so so with that in mind
with that in mind there's a there's a lack of consistency enormous there is a lack of calls
that go through and i'm going to finish it because we started with austin matthews and
the cross check and the potential suspension right i think it's going to be a fine you think
it's going to be fine i also think it's going to be fine i think he's going to get five thousand
it should be one game it should be a suspension but i think it's five thousand for the precedent
oh my god i hope he's i hope it's a game so then so i was going to ask you should he will he and
then i'm going to ask you is it fair because we've talked about that a little bit but i wanted to ask
you, is it fair? Because, and I'm going to bring up a name because we've seen it a lot here in
Toronto. Zidane O'Chara has made a career doing exactly what Austin Matthews did. And the excuse
was, well, he's tall. So he cross-checks people in the neck because he's tall. I've seen Zidane
O'Chara cross-check people in the neck. And by the way, I'm a big fan. I really like what he
brings and I hope the Leafs get him before the trade deadline's up. I have to ask,
is it like how are we gonna how are we gonna how are we gonna do this how do we quantify this
whether this is actually fair or not because i get buffalo fans saying the fuck this guy should
be suspended and i agree yeah but so shit so then should all of them yeah but what they do
with suspensions is sort of gaslight you and and you go well based on the past he shouldn't be
suspended and then the nhl shows you the video of matthew's cross-checking dollying in the head
and they go so you think this should be allowed and you're like what the that's not no you said
this should be allowed and now you're saying it shouldn't the answer but they go oh so that is
what you're saying yeah the answer to is it fair is uh yes on both sides or no on both sides
depending on what you look at it because they're gonna manipulate whatever they hand out to their
result you know if they if they come out with the fine they're gonna be like okay this is this is
precedent we haven't find in other instances and if they come up with the suspension then i'll be
like ah you look at this this is a suspension so is it fair it's no or it's either yes they're
going to make it up on either side yeah it doesn't really matter here here's my answer
go everyone looking for fair grow up okay there's no fairness in their decision on a different
subject the michael bunting calder conversation we pissed off two fan groups i pissed off two
fan groups last week uh you guys were part of the first one you really weren't part of the second
one so the first one is detroit fans they fucking hate us right now they do yeah they want more
respect on mo cider's name yeah oh okay so hold on sorry hold on let me set this up okay fine
the second thing is i pissed off buffalo fans because of the jack eichel thing and i was
riding the game with jesse and i thought you know maybe that jack eichel thing was poorly
timed because if one of them sees me in the crowd they could easily throw a beer at my head now they
didn't they were very nice but it easily could have happened right we had a sabers fan she's
like i don't like you i blocked you on twitter she was very funny she was very hilarious well
i've been walking out i go congratulations and she goes i unblocked you on twitter
i thought that was very funny we didn't spend a lot of time on this but we saw we met a lot of
fans at the hitters classic uh yesterday and it was really nice just to see people and like
because it's been literally two years since we've been able to meet fans and that was it was the
best part of my day and and taking all those pictures i hope so it was most of your day so
to the to the to the to the listeners that threw me down some hand warmers thank you there were
some listeners like they saw me like from six rows above and they're like we see you got you
rubbing your hands a lot whatever do you want some hand warmers i was like sure and then they
gave them to me it was amazing here as long as we're doing this before the red wings yeah yeah
you were freezing i wore snow pants because i'm smart you were wearing lulu lemons because you're
idiot yeah jesse what happened to you oh yeah oh man well i was wearing jeans but uh i did the
thing where you go up in the row behind you at a sporting event and then you while you hop over the
seat to get to your seat because there's people in the row ahead of you you don't want to make
them stand up right so i hopped down to my seat and i ripped my pants did a long split down the
side crotch to knee crotch yeah pretty much the knee and yeah but luckily i had a long coat on
so it didn't really matter in terms of the sight lines.
But yeah, it's that they're a little colder for the second half of the game.
Yeah, you guys are both like, it's cold.
It's true. It's true.
So as a part of Kyle Dubas's, and we'll get to Sider in a second,
but I want to talk about Bunting first.
As part of Kyle Dubas's pregame talk with Elliott Friedman,
he said he was talking about Michael Bunting
and whether or not really Michael Bunting deserved to be in the Calder conversation.
And he said some things that I really didn't know.
He said, my position as it pertains to Michael, his age, an older player who won the couple,
not the Calder and, you know, is, you know, 23, 24.
He said, normally, you know, I wouldn't necessarily think that this guy should be the Calder guy.
He said, essentially alluded to that.
He said, he said, but normally if they're an older Calder winner, they've come from
the KHL, right?
Normally the last, that's a good point.
And he said, Michael, if you look at the players he's contending with, I know they are four
or five years younger than him but michael bunting until he was 17 years old played double a hockey
yep wow some of those players when they were 17 years old were in the best developmental programs
in the world and already playing professional hockey he made his triple a debut at 17 years old
and played for the team that finished second or last the year before uh we were lucky enough to
find him at the sioux and bring him in and to me his path is not as fortuitous as others
so certainly he did not have the exposure
to development opportunities as some people
did to me that should be taken into
account now
I'm with him on this one that
whole paragraph was a setup
to say oh we do great
in the soup yeah no
I mean they did you know what though they did though
you know what like Michael Bunting is
like genuinely a wonderful story
like for them except for
the part where he said Michael had a
very long way around to get here
And I think that should be taken into account.
He's having a great year.
Anyone who is trying to discount him just needs to be enlightened a little bit on his path.
Now, I am going to say that all that is awesome.
But to echo Steve's point from last week, the Calder is not about your feelings.
And that story makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
But it is completely irrelevant as it comes to the Calder conversation.
And take the age thing out of it because the age gate is the age gate.
If you could be 17 and win it and you could be 26 and win it, then that's the age.
So take the age thing out of it.
Stop arguing that that matters one way or another.
He's in the, but to be honest with you, the Kyle Dubas thing, that was a great PR thing.
It was awesome.
Good for him.
But none of that matters.
No, I still, my contention is still that Michael Bunting is the best rookie on ice this year.
Yeah.
No matter what his age.
And that's not to take away from Sider or Lucas Raymond.
But, you know, some of the arguments that were thrown at us from Detroit Red Wings fans,
well, Sider plays 23 minutes a night.
Well, who else will?
Sider's got 37 points.
Who else is going to score?
Someone's got to score.
It's not that he's not good.
It's not that he's not going to be dominant.
But who's got the best one this year?
So I wanted you to see this, Detroit fans, and know that despite all of the wonderful
things that Kyle Dubas laid out in that resume, it's immaterial.
Immaterial.
So, I wanted to throw out a few things there with Mo, because there was something I said
in particular that Red Wings fans are like, what are you talking about?
And it's valid.
Okay, all right.
I said he was slowing down.
Yeah.
No, he is not.
Like, not in terms of production.
What I was alluding to is he had a few tough games in his own end recently.
Like, he had a game where he was a minus three.
Asterisk on that.
alex nedeljkovic
dude what if there's a morassic for nedeljkovic deal that can be made and we just see if we can
make it a wash like holy smokes is he unbelievably bad um so that would be hurting mo and i think
mo cider uh does get a bit of a boost uh from playing defense right so like if he's tied
in points with bunting or lucas raymond it's impressive you give him the tiebreaker because
he's on d like that's wild right that being said um i still think bunting is the hotter rookie right
now who would i rather have in a fantasy draft cider every time that's not what it is though
who are you building your team around cider of course yeah who's gonna win the calder
right now in terms of teammates as well they if you look at the lineups bunting obviously
plays with matthews and marner and mo he plays with essentially five defensemen who
aren't even close to the quality of him you know it's like he doesn't have the support around him
and Detroit fans are giving him a boost because of that
and they're taking away some from Bunting and Matthews,
but I don't care about Marner and Matthews
because they play with Bunting.
I don't know if that's fair.
It's just about the individual's performance.
It's not about the team around them.
It's not about the support that they receive
in terms of putting up their production.
You have to look at the guy in the vacuum
for the individual award because that's what it is.
Because if we're going to do what they're doing with,
well, you've got to look at the situation.
bunting won that job over nick ritchie yeah yeah they didn't arbitrarily throw him in no
they've signed another guy to more money he didn't work so like the notion that playing
with matthews and marner is a given that you'll be successful is not true well didn't ritchie get
10 15 games he got the whole start of the season and like preseason and to me it boosts bunting
because that means he's a first line quality player yeah is that not more evidence that he's
a better performer because he can play on the first line and I get Sider's a first line first
pairing defenseman but Bunting's also elevated his game to that point so you shouldn't take away
where they're playing and their teammates uh that doesn't take away from their Calder uh
eligibility you know Kerfoot is was in the top six Mikheyev really wanted a spot in the top six
Bunting got bumped down to the fourth line when he had a little slump and then he scored while
he was on the fourth line and the situation presented itself he stole that spot so he
wasn't arbitrarily handed it he he won that so i don't think him playing with matthews and marner
should hurt him now here's a here's a voice that that i think some people would be surprised
to hear from in the bunting conversation call him at tsn.ca travis yost bunting deserves the
calder this season all right travis now travis i'm not i'm not gonna um i'm not gonna uh go into
it too much but i think you should you should read it um he's putting michael bunting on like
in terms of uh uh goals above replacement okay just just in the in the in the last 10 years i'm
just going to use this cherry pick this one stat but read travis's article it's long and it's in
up. In the last
10 years, here are the people that
have won, and
here's what their goals above replacement have
been, okay? 2011,
Gabriel Lanneskog, 11.5.
2017, Matt Barzell,
20.7. Are you sure it's not games above
replacement? Goals above
replacement. Oh, okay. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
So, yeah. It's Gabriel Lanneskog,
11.5 seats, says goals above replacement.
Okay.
Pedersen
17.9 goals above
her place
Makar 15.8
Nathan McKinnon
that's not how many
goals they score
it's how many goals
they contribute to
okay
Panarin 14.8
Ekblad 13.8
Matthews 11.5
Kaprizov 9.2
Huberto 3.1
wow
the 2021-2022
Calder class
Michael Bunting
19.4
holy
Anton Lindell
who by the way
is still not getting
any respect
Florida
come on like okay and then you got cider at 11.4 and matt boldy at a point now you could say
bunting plays with matthews boldy's messed up because he just got here cider's a defenseman
and we're rating him by goals well that's aaron eckblad was no no it's contributions to goals
guys no i mean like that's stupid ridiculous for him oh okay it's crazy it's it's it's amazing yeah
yeah but like but like if you look at eckblad eckblad and cider are almost exactly similar
that's crazy yeah cider and matthews were in their rookie years about the same i think wow
first that's crazy what i think about that cider i i would say i would say it was once a two-horse
race between lucas raymond and mo cider it's now a two-horse race between bunting and cider
and anton lindell's looking on like what doesn't matter flora oh well sorry in terms of the
conversation and lindell should be in there as well no if you were those not a heart trophy
candidate then lindell's not a call nobody's talked about that no both of them they don't
get trophies it's florida um i just wanted to throw that out there travis yost guy who is not
a leafs homer very definitely not a leafs homer i was just happy alan gave me a break from the
constant wave of martin firk tweets there it is i'm glad the humido thing happened so that like
just give me a break there's martin firk uh firkin martin martin firk i am going to read you
a letter from the russian federation which is the government to the russian hockey federation
which is the uh sorry the russian hockey federation which is the arm of the government
to the KHL.
Yes.
I'm going to read you a letter.
Yeah.
Okay.
Dear colleagues,
we're all going through
a difficult time today.
A lot of information
is posted in all
information resources
every minute.
Now, you have to remember
this is translated from Russian,
so it's not going to make
complete sense.
And unfortunately,
often,
it is on plausible news
and fake.
So what they're saying here
in the first paragraph
is a lot of information
floating around
where our government's
just blocking it all.
Instagram, Facebook,
Twitter, everything.
And a lot of what you're reading
is fake news in support of their own during war is only possible reaction of normal person so
supporting your own during war is the only reaction of a normal person meaning that some
of this fake news coming out of the ukraine is fake news because they're pro-ukrainian of course
that makes sense we ask you to support the action and work with the fans of the issue of supporting
our army meaning the khl is now to support the russian army we are sending coordinated campaign
posters they can be printed and distributed in the form of leaflets flyers flags um flash mobs
audio and video appeals uh in cuba are also welcome and i don't know if they actually meant
cuba if not uh please note promotion is mandatory and subject to reporting the day after a game day
all reporting information including photo and video reports at least four photos uh as well
as brief text descriptions of the event including materials involved must be submitted to the
to the hockey federation before 10 moscow time and so basically what's happening at khl games
and by the way they're acting in the khl like none of this is happening uh it's bizarre it's
so bizarre and if you follow khl's english account which i do nobody can reply unless the khl also
follows you and they all only follow 125 people so nobody is actually allowed to reply to the
khl's tweets anymore and so now as and and steve steve mentioned this like 10 years ago
you know when the when the when the last lockout happened or lockout strike whatever the last thing
was it was a lockout i think yeah we we started the show that season like after that right late
in the playoffs yes and one of the things we were talking about was we had we had had basically two
lockouts in in 10 years right and one of them had been a full season then one of them had been a
half season. And it'd been pretty devastating to the sport. And a lot of the chatter at that time
was, well, hey, there's the KHL and they're going to come in and they're going to sign Ilya
Kovalchuk to $14 million a year. Are we going to see more of this? Because of the hard cap,
are we going to see star players leave the NHL and go to the KHL and make a lot more money,
which was on the table at the time? And Steve said no. And what was interesting about it is
you said you need to remember the KHL's place in society. What's it there for?
do you remember what you said no this is fascinating what you said was that it's there
for people to let off steam it's the same reason and you didn't say you didn't i'm i'm extrapolating
now sure but it's the same reason that the romans had games it's the same reason we have you need
to have spectator events where you can bring fans out and they could go ah for three hours and then
go home exhausted it's a it's a what they call a social safety valve and also you sort of hinted
at the fact that there was deep connections with russian oligarchs and therefore the russian
government on every team ska st petersburg is arguably a richer hockey team than the toronto
maple leaves they're owned by gas prom which is like the state-owned oil company so they're
printing they are a richer team yeah so that objectively there's a reason why whenever you
hear khl news and oh this team is looking at this player or you know uh this guy's leaving to this
team there's a reason that it's usually like two teams because that's where all the money
it's those two teams st petersburg being chief among them st petersburg had a roster remember
ozha ganoff was like a healthy scratch yeah like half his khl games in the year before
he joined the leafs it's because they had like 45 people because they just hoarded them all
yeah and there were teams in like smaller
eastern Russian markets like
just water
dying and playing with minor
leaguers
so
so this is the
this is the interesting part for me because
you look at this from a political perspective
they are now using the KHL
teams to promote the war
it's a league that is
it's there are deep political ties
in that league yeah
it doesn't shock me at all
This goes far beyond singing the national anthem before a game, you know what I mean?
That sort of nationalism that some people like, some people are uncomfortable with.
This is, uh, they're directly using the Continental Hockey League as a propaganda arm of the Russian government.
Yeah, it's, anyone who's not Russian needs to get the hell out of there.
They gotta get the hell out of there now.
i i did ask someone who would know um by the way as a follow-up to something we talked about before
as far as i know this could be wrong but as far as i know there's three teams in the khl that are
not paid in euros or sorry not paid in rubles so those teams would be riga in latvia yokerit in
finland and um uh kunlun north star or kunlun red star sorry in um in china so
if you're a russian who wants to live in russia and you're from russia and all that i i get
staying there right uh anyone else like a few weeks ago is like hey man i'm staying for the
money get the hell out of there get the hell out of there dude it's they're like things like the
canadian hockey league keeping out russian and belarussian players i thought was a little
ridiculous because first of all uh like we're talking individual players here we're not talking
organizations and these are kids but also this is literally exactly what those governments want
yeah they want to keep them yeah the people in charge in russia in belarus want their best
players to stay there um not to like stick it to anybody but like as a form of national pride
they want players to stay there not so that the product is better necessarily it's we are the best
this is where the best players play it's it it's it's national pride right it's uh i don't know
how the nhl or any hockey organization can do business with the khl going forward until there's
a resolution here well this war well of course and and and so so i was talking to somebody last
week and they'll remain nameless but they said you know what's interesting about said your
generation's reaction to this to what's going on ours our generation and younger versus you know
our maybe our parents generation or even a generation ahead of us is we were babies or
in jesse's case not even born when apartheid fell in south africa right it was like 1992
and you know when that happened um and again i'm not going to get into the particulars here too
much but the idea was and at that time that the the the all the governments basically got together
and i believe the ioc did too and banned south africa from all the all the sports events they
banned the athletes they banned them it wasn't you can come but you can't use your flag it was you
you are not allowed here, made them into a pariah because of the outrage of what was going on.
Was it a perfect solution? No. Was it unfair to the athletes? Yes. But what this person said to
me, and this person's quite smart, like really smart, I can guarantee you respect this person.
They said, listen, it ain't always pretty, but sometimes you need to take away a government's
ability to capitalize on their athletes and extrapolate that and use that to the national
greatness myth. Because what a lot of governments do, and by the way, this was all part of the
Kremlin plan. The Kremlin plan for 20 years has been, we're going to make our way into UK society,
we're going to make our way into US society, and the way we're going to do it is sports.
When I was reading a ton of stuff on Abramovich, who owned Chelsea, was trying to sell Chelsea,
and now Chelsea's frozen.
They can't even wear their own jerseys.
They can't do any player transfers.
They can't do anything.
Wow.
So like there are no player transfers.
Chelsea's a major club.
When he bought that team,
he was this quiet guy.
They asked him about,
I believe,
I forget which news organization,
but Christia Freeland was,
who is now the deputy prime minister
here in Canada,
was over there and was a news editor.
And she talked to him
and there was a couple other reporters.
I was reading an amazing Twitter thread on it.
And they said,
this guy compared
what happened in Russia at the fall of the Soviet Union
and the kleptocracy and the whole thing,
him getting rich as to crying over spilled milk.
And then he was, you know, people were,
oh, he just dismissed it out of hand.
And what happened was he owned Chelsea.
Chelsea's got a lot of supporters.
He has a lot of money.
And all of a sudden,
sitting in a box with this Abramovich
was like the hottest ticket in town.
It was like the cool thing to do.
And it brought in, oh, you know,
people are like, well, he's done all this.
shit but we can't really prove it they won and they and they're and they're winning yeah and i
love chelsea so maybe i'll go you know what i mean so there was the whole there was a whole point to
this and so what this person is saying is listen it ain't pretty and it ain't fair but there's a
viewpoint out there which is um okay so we've sanctioned russia and the athletes from russia
can still perform and compete and russia can still use that and say look at how great we are
well and they're trying to backdoor it by then having athletes like there was that gymnast i
think who wear the z which is now like the russian symbol for supporting this war on ukraine this
invasion of ukraine yeah it's so i don't know i don't know what the right answer is but i can see
i can see that viewpoint and you know in in in all honesty like this is that we're at a very
tenuous point in history everybody can acknowledge that right this is this could spiral out of
control in a heartbeat and you know i just get worse yeah 100 it could it could spiral very
quickly um and i think it's going to be very very interesting to see how sports reacts to this
there have been there has been a lot of crazy shit that sports has had to react to in the last
few years i think more than ever and i think now i i'm going to be very curious like yesterday
yesterday before the game they brought out a player from the barry colts and i missed you
missed this and you remember this jesse right brought a player from the barry colts he's a
ukrainian national player but he had his colts jersey on he took the colts jersey off ukrainian
jersey and my first reaction and i'll be honest was i wonder what the russian players on the
bench are thinking both sides has to be uncomfortable oh i mean imagine it was you
no matter what side you're on well did you like did you look well i couldn't see from
where we were right but i know if i could see that's the first place my eyes would be darting
right am i wrong on that no i'd want to see i you cannot tell me you don't want to see how they
react you and like with no accusation you're just like how do you react to that i don't know your
two countries are at war and we now go live to what you think about that like you can't tell me
you're not curious anyway it's very very interesting um yeah you should check out the
khl page it's it's pretty nuts and i guess they're either they're blocking everybody that uh that
well they were blocking everybody that um that tweeted ukrainian flags at them because they
were basically getting ratioed every time they tweeted people just tweet and then they just said
okay well nobody can reply to our tweets now not such a meme lord are you now no not really not
really so it's very very interesting to see how this plays out i just thought i'd bring that up
now the last thing i would like to bring up before we get to the press conference and i'm going to
admit i know nothing about this subject i remember this person but he wasn't one of the people that
stuck out to me scott hall has been taken off life support um and you know very very famous
very popular wrestler he has not passed as of this recording um but they are going to discontinue
life support from what we know he fell and this is from uh basically he went and had a procedure
done to fix a broken hip um he has suffered three heart attacks already um while trying to i guess
recover from this surgery so you can imagine the damage that that does to your body 63 year old man
and i just wanted to i wanted to see steve like you know scott hall kevin nash those were like
big big names in wrestling in the late 90s when we grew up and we were watching what scotty homie
do you oh man i mean he was the bad guy uh you know razor ramon so i knew him i knew him before
he was nwo wcw scott hall um back in wwe when he was razor ramon wwf when he was razor ramon and
wanted to be him in video games and the razor's edge was this cool finishing move and we would
all dangerously try it on each other in the schoolyard and uh or at least the first part
of it it was basically i want to see if i can lift you um that's what it was he you know the
the new generation of wrestler i know you guys don't pay as much attention the new generation
of wrestler is unrecognizable from the one that he grew up in and the one he grew up in uh it was
steroid use cocaine abuse alcohol abuse um they lived hard painkiller uh yeah so a lot of these
guys have died young um scott hall it's such a shame i mean it's such a shame because 63 is too
young but it's also such a shame because he's basically on his like second chance at life
pretty much there's a there's a documentary about um his sort of rise and fall in wrestling
and the the fall is so sad he was at an indie show in this indie show they're like we got scott hall
like this is a big get uh they made him go on even though he had just gotten out of the hospital
i don't even remember what it was for it was something grotesque and he comes out he can
barely move as his music's playing he's still got his hospital bracelet on oh and he's just
like staggering around the ring and it looked like he was on death's door many years ago and
he made a comeback he's at the hall of fame ceremony for wwe he's looking healthy you know
gives a speech he's hey yo he's he's got that that deep voice and he resembles himself yeah which for
a while yeah didn't yeah um so to hear he went uh south in this way it's sad it's sad i i hope the
current generation of wrestlers right now doesn't go through um i mean every wrestler
the majority of wrestlers i cheered for growing up are either sick or dead like and that's
that's the truth um especially the guys from when i was a kid those are not old men those are guys
who should be in like their 50 60 70s and a lot of them because of what they put their bodies
through not just in the taking bumps but in the travel and the substance abuse a lot of them
aren't with us anymore and it's wrong well i think i think now you see the the difference in
physiques with wwe athletes right like the the you know back then it was these big lumbering
giant people the the bigger the better yeah right and just like you remember how big triple h used
to be a big um kevin nash used to be hulk hogan was huge wwf hulk hogan versus wcw hulk hogan
is hilarious oh yeah i'm gonna look that up oh but he had he always bragged about his two foot
pythons this is arms that were two feet around and uh then he gets to wcw and he's like smelt
because he wasn't on roids anymore right scott hall reminds me you're right like when i think
of scott hall all i think about is the completely unhinged era of wrestling it was where everything
was on the line and it was it was the worst of the worst and the best of the best like
the programming was like sexist and homophobic and they would go they would nothing was off the
line you know they could do anything they wanted and be on tv in the in the mid 90s you know it
aged so poorly it's awful television i talk about the attitude era with reverence and then i went
back and like watched some stuff and i was like holy shit yeah this like i can't even be like
come here son this is what i grew up with and show no you cannot so that era for what they
were doing on television the things the wrestlers were doing off air was the same recklessness you
know all those guys were on substances they weren't sleeping they're traveling every night
of the year and they didn't take care of their bodies in any respect you know even from from
the in-ring performances you know they would do anything to get a rise out of the crowd they
would damage themselves in in any respect and then off air they're doing the all the all the steroids
let's be honest here all the steroids all the drugs so that's the area he comes from and it
just slowly throughout this decade we've seen those guys who live through that just deteriorate
and go way too soon and it's sad uh the things they did for for entertainment purposes for us
as teens just watching the teens and kids you know and that's that's what i'm going to think
about when i see for the next i don't know how many years it's going to be where we're going to
see more stories like got hall where these guys are just going in their 60s and a little too early
because of what they went through and like you got to commend them for loving wrestling so much
like that's that's what they did it out of the pure joy of wrestling and entertainment
and it's it's it's sad but like the passion that those guys had for the sport you know
they they reflected the audience they did man those some of those pops i remember from when
i was a kid like just the the glass shattering of stone cold like just crowd goes absolutely
insane oh and but like wrestling you can even live a good healthy life um you know not you know
do any of the substances and stuff yeah as as it's gone on we've seen it get smarter we've seen guys
like cm punk get the biggest pops in the game yeah you know a guy who's the complete opposite
of every 90s wrestler a skinny dude who's kind of a milk bag yeah yeah yeah a milk bag who's
who's substance-free.
He's like, I live a clean life, and that's my thing.
Adam Cole?
He's like one of the most over-wrestlers right now.
I think, what was it, Michaels?
Shawn Michaels was the closest back then to what they are now.
Shawn Michaels was like a mover, right?
Stylistically.
Stylistically.
But everything off-air was...
He was right on all the pills, all the drugs.
No, no, I don't doubt that.
I'm just saying like stylistically.
In terms of his stature.
Yeah.
Right.
He was a slimmer dude.
but the old guys are yoga guys now yeah diamond dallas page sean michael and now talking about
how they do yoga over the next 30 years we've seen that you don't have to be that to get the
biggest pop in the game you can you can be the other dude who lives a healthy reasonable lifestyle
and still be the most over guy in wrestling but recently we saw a wrestler i forgot his name he
was fighting drew mcintyre a move went wrong he was dumped right on his head and then there was
another wrestler a week later biggie who was champion two months ago he broke his neck oh gosh
he broke it so uh he did give an update he fractured i think it was two of his vertebrae
aw no no this is wwe oh this is uh biggie from new day i don't know remember we saw new day
new day is the uh he's a huge one they have the booty o's cereal and they brought it yeah
i do know new day yeah they're amazing
yeah there's just a guy playing a trombone off the yeah that was xavier woods that's it
that's xavier woods yeah that's so stupid they're all they're they're so entertaining but yeah big
e um who's like i don't know 300 pounds someone gave him a belly-to-belly suplex lands right on
the top of his head fractured two of his vertebrae but was able to move all his uh extremities and
everything and he said he didn't feel a difference in strength so he broke it in i don't know if
there is a good way to break your neck that's how he did it um there's still a huge risk involved
man huge risk definitely yeah there never won't be no a wrestler died in ring at a pay-per-view
in our lifetimes uh owen hart that's yeah that's crazy that's crazy anyway just thought we'd do a
little shout out to all the wrestling fans and uh and scotty hall and his family it's a uh it's a
tragedy uh but incredible memories absolutely incredible memories it's a dead documentary
is very worth watching by the way let's do the press conference
the steve dangle press conference

Let's get into a question here
It's me in trainer mode
This is a question I thought was very interesting
Because it's going to be a conversation
It's probably going to happen in the next, I don't know, five years
From SCUUSU
On our Discord
Sergei Bobrovsky has two Vesna
That's more than Lundqvist
Is he a Hall of Famer?
I think it's...
Let's see what he does with Florida this year.
Not yet.
Not yet.
Absolutely not yet.
No.
No, not yet.
Not yet.
This is not...
How valid is this?
What do you mean?
When you say someone's name, I should be like, yes.
They're in the Hall of Fame.
I've heard that argument in other sports.
The Hall of Fame should be...
Yeah, that guy's a Hall of Famer.
That should be the reaction.
henrik lundquist yes yeah circuit borowski no like and here's the thing yes he does have two
vesnas because he deserved yes in each of those two years uh the rest of the time then what like
lundquist was consistently a top five top ten goalie in the nhl yep um there's numbers to back
that up but there's also the there's also watching rangers games and knowing how screwed the rangers
would have been without him in all respects sergey bobrovsky uh vesna unusable vesna below average
average vesna conversation like is his he's had a wackadoo career like look at this
how to what kind of goalie is this can anyone tell me what kind of goalie this is
9 15 8 9 8 9 3 2 9 2 3 9 18 9 0 8 9 3 1 9 2 1 9 13 900 906 9 17 like he's he's very up and down he
lacks the consistency of a lungquist you know here's an interesting conversation uh tuka rask
and whether or not he gets in the hall of fame when it's all said and done i'd be interested
to see if Bobrovsky
has a more impressive
resume than Tukorask.
Interesting.
I mean,
so Bobrovsky already
has 327 wins
in the NHL.
What's the,
I don't know this,
what's the like
wins bar for goaltenders
for Hall of Fame?
Oh, I don't know.
It's like 500?
500 you're in.
Yeah.
For sure.
400 are you in?
500 is ridiculous.
Like Bobrovsky,
I mean,
he's signed
for a very long time,
but like to even get to,
he'd have to play
enough games, right?
Five more years
at this rate.
yeah is 400 like uh you're in it's a pretty it's a solid career it's a really good benchmark you'll
get the 400 yeah here's okay here's my mean thing tuka rask had 308 in his total career
wow he has more wins yeah wow but zero playoff success here's here's my yes yeah here's my
mean thing for rask whoa how could you compare babrovsky to rask he's got a cup yeah there's a
backup Stephen never won the cup as a starter never did never not once it's true and listen
in the conversation it'll get brought up it is relevant it's tough but you hear the name
Tuka Raskin you're like that's a hall of famer right no not really no no Adam I'm thinking
watch out for the mic oh sorry i'm breathing yeah you're breathing sorry i'm just inhaling
the the scent of this discussion um i was thinking about i'm thinking about this and like
goaltending is so weird right it's a weird position and i think when you rate a goaltender
to be a hall of famer you're rating them i think in their in their best five to seven seasons aren't
you you take the peak i think you look at the peak yeah and you look at i think this is important
how many times can they do it in a row because this is what subtracts he took a rask was always
good the problem for me is brobroski is good bad yeah very good league leading terrible getting a
Coach fired.
Oh, now he's good again.
Signs a tenure deal.
Terrible.
Now his team's in almost first place.
If they're not in first place right now,
I haven't checked the standings this morning.
I think they are.
I know they lost to the Kings who had nobody last night.
Who scored?
Was it Martin Burke?
Shut up about Martin Burke!
He does have a hard shot, though.
In Tampa, while the Leafs have been losing some games,
Florida loses to the Kings who have no one.
They got a point out of it.
It was OT.
yeah yeah i mean listen i i i think tuka won the cup and he got his team to the finals
tuka's in we're not comparing the two like i think tuka should be in i think brobroski
hasn't proven it to me yet and i know he's got better he's got a better track record success
and you're not putting tuka in i'm not putting him in yet i didn't say that okay i didn't say
that i i i would need to dig deeper i'm fairly certain he has a shot for sure has a shot he's
got a very good shot but i think he's got to win a cup or two don't you wait broski broski okay
yeah broski i would like to see some playoff success for that resume it would really boost
see broski doesn't even he doesn't even have a deep run no anywhere six one six five six ten
four three he has one second round appearance and that was the flyers wow with the uh blue
jackets in 1819 oh that was the year they beat tampa right in the first round he's undrafted
i didn't know that i didn't either i don't know why how did what was his first oh he came up from
russia that makes sense and the flyers ditched him for uh they ditched him because they had
ilia bruzgalov oh boy and oh man what was that trade voracek i can't remember
that's it we'll see how his career plays out but i guess right now if sergey borovsky retired
tomorrow we're not this this hall of name panel committee he's not not putting him in the hall
not yet nope he's got a shot not yet all right steve do you want to test your memory yes and
we'll go i don't have my glasses december 20th 2000 how much information do you want
uh i'll let you know okay okay okay okay december okay december december december 20th 2008
oh boy okay so we're talking the 0809 season there's a significant thing that happened from a
defenseman game 32 of the season do you want the final score no oh do you want to well not yet
So, December 20th, 2008.
So, let me try to think who on earth the Leafs defenders were.
There was Luke Shen.
That was his rookie year.
Dion Phaneuf wasn't on the team yet.
Actually, I don't think.
Was it later that year?
He wasn't on the team.
Jeff Finger I think would have been on that team
Mike Komiseric I think
would have been on that team
Francois Beauchemin I would have
said was on that team but I know he wasn't
from our Ducks discussion the other day
a defenseman
did something
December 20th
and it was game 32
did
something interesting
it was a significant moment
in this player's career this defenseman's career well my first instinct was to say luke shen first
career goal is that the case is that your guess well geez dude do i is is my turn over no we can
keep going with it but that is incorrect incorrect yes 32 oh shit i might need an opponent yeah
No, I found a score on an opponent.
What do you want?
I think getting an opponent should be just part and parcel.
All right.
A defenseman did something.
Significant.
For their career, this was significant.
And it was what year?
Oh, I know what game this was.
I think you got it.
You fucker.
What is it?
Is this the Brett Lebda game?
No.
Oh, it's not.
What is that?
That's not who we're talking about here.
Oh, it's not?
No, no, no.
Then I'm wrong.
i thought it was when brett lebda was minus three and a nine three win no no i don't think anybody
would remember that except for you i don't even think people it might have been it might have
been the same game but that's not okay we're talking about the opponent was the thrashers
for that game no okay that is not that is not the game he's minus three caberly i think was on the
team we're the thrashers yeah we're the okay we're the Leafs at home or on the road and let
me see let me pull up thing it was on the road was it in Boston it was not Steve I don't think
you're getting this one all right okay give me the opponent the Pittsburgh Penguins a defenseman
did something of significance against
the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Final score.
It has to be Cabral, right?
Like passing and career
assists or something.
Leafs were 13-13
and 6. Not a great start
to the year. God, this is really hurting
my feelings. So Fleury was
probably the goalie. Played the Pittsburgh
Penguins who were 17-11 and 4.
The final score was
7-3 for Toronto.
did you actually stump steve i think i think we got him did we get him we got him okay so
a high score significant moment in the defender's career i'm thinking
hat trick potentially i was thinking cabriolet assist record for the lease
because isn't he like the all-time assist holder i'm i'm pulling the plug king of the
ghost assist i'm pulling the plug you're not getting this shit
shit
Jonas Frogan
scored his only career goal
oh my god
that's really hard
that's very hard
Jonas Frogan who cost the Leafs a draft pick
scored only one goal
in his entire career
it was on December 20th
2008 versus the Pittsburgh Penguins
that's so hard
that's a little aggressive
you've been nailing really hard ones
lately and we got you with a very hard one i know i was gonna say froggy too in my list that's oh
man i still see people walking around with that era leafs jersey and i shudder
there was a luke shen that era jersey yesterday oh they're everywhere at the game oh wait and 12
grobovsky terrible terrible terrible jersey terrible years jonas frogren uh he was a cliff
fletcher acquisition i believe when cliff fletcher was a gm for like two seconds remember before
and he cost the leafs a draft pick because the way they acquired him wasn't within the
rules of the cba it was illegal yeah it was illegal they so basically if you're under
contract with a team in europe i don't remember who he was with someone in sweden um if you're
under contract you have to buy yourself out of the contract yeah in order to sign an nhl one
that's what petri conziola had to do and he had to do that out of pocket and then he didn't make
the team which is disastrous for him the leafs paid jonas frogan's buyout and you're not allowed
to do that you can't you can't do that yeah for some reason whatever you can't send the money to
the team that's really stupid so the nhl would be able to yeah the nhl went hey you can't do that
and it cost them a draft pick which one uh it was a fourth rounder i forget what year okay um uh
a that's super stupid second um i think uh um the uh damn the interesting part about that and
not enough is made of this and maybe this is a video for you in the summer oh that six month
eight month period where cliff fletcher was the gm was one of the most disastrous
he didn't do great he did not well the jeff finger contract alone you could do 15 minutes
jeff finger i'm trying to think they called the wrong guy like i don't know if people know this
but they called they thought it was Martin it was
it was he got him mixed up with Martin Skula
no or was it not
Kurt Sauer Kurt Sauer
man they got him that's you're talking
old hockey internet here you're talking
like HF boards rumor mill
from like 2007 or 8
that's that's really inside baseball
bothers me there was yada yada yada
for the youngins out there there was a really
old HF boards post where this
guy put Jeff fingers
stats next to I think it was
Kurt Sowers
um based on what how the leafs management described
jeff finger and how he played for the avalanche the previous year
and based on the stats he was describing kurt sauer not jeff
finger jeff finger like there were teams who
wanted to make an offer on him on jeff finger yeah we'll give you a few years
and you know a few million spread over those
years no the leafs gave him three and a half per
it was the only the only comparable to recent years i can have is when um calgary signed
derrick engeland and bob mckenzie was like yeah he's getting three million dollars that's per
season wow yeah that was a perky move yeah because he wasn't bless derrick engeland but
three plus million dollars there was a pointless i don't that was again a bad perky move
yeah it's a bad berkey movie yeah yeah i i i honestly i would love to re-examine that the
second uh cliff fletcher go around because it was right after jfj and we were all very excited that
it wasn't going to be jfj so we were all like okay so it's not john ferguson jr anybody could
be better and we were incorrect we were incorrect we're very wrong so i can look that up real
briefly well why don't you make a video out of it let's not look it up why don't you make a video
out of it this summer. I would love to hear the Steve Dangle
opinion on that. Adam, before I ask
you this last thing, I have to shout out
Versingetorix
for that trivia
question. That is their Discord name.
Are you sure? Versingetorix?
I don't know.
It's V-E-R-S-I-N-G-E-T-O-R-I-X.
It sounds like
Versingetorix.
What is Versingetorix?
Versingetorix is the leader of the
last
gaelic resistance to rome in france uh against julius caesar i'm assuming is there a g in there
versingetorix was a king and chief did they this is their name i it is versingetorix look how it's
spelled steven do you blame me for not knowing how this oh bro so united the tribes against
julius he is was a king and chieftain of the arviman arvini isn't it or i don't know arvimi
Our Vemi tribe who united the Gauls in a failed revolt against Roman forces during the last phase of Julius.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
You know that.
And it's not even really fair to call that a revolt because what they were doing was the Romans were saying, we're taking this.
And they were saying, well, no, you're not.
And they were a bunch of disparate tribes.
And Vercingetorix was the one that actually got them together and said, we should all fight together instead of, you know, coming at Rome.
You should edit Wikipedia to say that.
uh despite having willingly surrendered to caesar he was executed in rome yes because he was a
trophy and he actually sat in jail for like four years while they waited because remember the weird
thing with vercingetorix is that so he julius caesar wins but it's an illegal war so he's a
hero in rome but the senate's like wait a second we didn't order this this is wrong you shouldn't
even be consul you should be like you should have stepped down a long time ago so they talk about
julius caesar you know crossing and coming into rome and invading rome or whatever um so the
entire time that julius caesar is essentially seizing power in rome this guy that he has won
on the battlefield is sitting in jail in in pre pre-christ jail you can imagine the conditions
right and so um so then once julius caesar actually seizes power and that's a civil war
with Pompey Magnus and then a whole bunch of things. He has a huge parade through Rome and
four years later, here's Vercingetorix still chained up and then they killed him. They kept
him alive so that he could be a trophy. So when Julius Caesar gained power because he was a huge
hero in Rome, illegally gaining power, once he did that, then they could say, hey, look,
this is the barbarian, quote unquote barbarian that we got four years ago. We kept him alive
for you here he is now there's his head gone jesus yeah execution by strangling oh strangling
yeah oh yeah yeah now that i think they used to do that i think if if i'm wrong i could be wrong
but they could have they may have done that privately i feel like i don't know that they
would have had a public execution of strangling i think they would have done that doesn't sound
like an official thing no i think it was sort of considered like here's a nicer way to die
Weirdly enough.
I guess.
Yeah.
Anyway, no bloodshed, right?
That's the whole thing.
Okay, cool.
Anyway.
Wow.
They got a cool statue of him in France.
He's riding like a horse.
Is that the green one?
Yeah.
Oh, there you go.
Well, it's green now.
Didn't used to be green.
No, it was brass, right?
That's my favorite thing that I didn't learn until I was older.
Copper, I think.
Copper.
Copper.
All these statues used to be copper.
If you see something that's like, they're all the exact same shade of green.
adam here's the here's the death thing if you want it go ahead tell me so this is from the
imprisonment and death a section of his wikipedia article yeah so uh vercingetorix was imprisoned
in the trulinium in rome okay for almost six years before being publicly displayed in the first
of caesar's four triumphs in 46 bc and that's what the parade is called it would have been
called a triumph they called him triumph so this was the first of four right because he had four
different wars he said that he won he was ceremonially strangled at the temple of jupiter
optimus maximus after the triumph so i'm wondering if that's i don't know if that was because they
sacrificed right like they sacrificed bulls and shit and i wondered i wonder if that would have
been done publicly or not i don't know i thought that that would have been it would have been in
front of like a priest but yeah yeah it sounds like it was messed up publicly messed up all right
yeah but a heroic figure a heroic cult hero kind of like buddhica in england you know like of the
of the it's basically like it's so funny that two countries like france and england are like
or france and britain uh are uh are like wow this is our we sure stood up to oppression didn't we
you know hilarious but that's that's sort of like their folk both like it's part of their history
yeah yeah that's you know i'm half english that's my guy right buddhica is a queen
this is my queen buddhica that's my queen yeah yes queen slay that's right
buddhica sorry that's yeah that's how clueless i am in all this yeah anyway that's interesting
the the final question i had for you yeah was have you seen drive to survive season four yet
not yet it came out on friday not yet and we uh should review it all when it's done so my my uh
my girlfriend is threatening that if we don't watch love is blind too soon that that she is
going to watch it on her own which i don't want but i said nat the first race is this weekend we
have to watch and drive to survive so love is blind is going to wait another week we're going
to start drive to survive it's very cute that you get threats sl just watches oh i think that's like
that's i mean she she has like a bunch of shows in her rolodex that are hers oh yeah but there's
a couple that are ours and we have to keep those this morning because she's on march break lucky
duck she goes you want to watch drive to survive and i said yes i do so i think we're gonna hey
finally you're gonna start it you can't start at season four no no no we won't okay you are gonna
love this and i can't wait for you to meet gunther steiner gunther steiner who is italian by the way
i think definitely yes i know right doesn't sound italian doesn't the name's not italian but yeah
you will love gunther steiner could toto wolf hold a public strangling of yes yeah he probably
and he would do the strangling so toto wolf could could he could literally chop me in half that guy
wait till you meet toto wolf and you won't meet him till season two really season two is when it
gets good because season one like half the cast doesn't want to be in it like lewis hamilton's
not in it because he's like why would i do this he doesn't know that it's going to be a big deal
So he's like, I'm not participating in this Netflix thing.
And then they see the fallout of season one.
They're like, oh, I kind of need to be a part of this.
All of a sudden, the drivers from Haas are more famous than Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen and the guys that are racing for Ferrari at the time.
Sebastian Vettel's not in it.
So they start the season.
It's literally about three teams.
It's about McLaren before McLaren is what they are now, which is a top 3-4 team.
They're terrible at this time.
It's about Haas.
A little bit about Williams.
A lot of Haas.
A lot of Hoffs, yeah, and they are a mid-pack team at this point, and they fall off.
What?
What?
This is the first time in the history of the podcast when big news has broken during the show.
Oh.
Austin Matthews.
Oh, here we go.
Suspension has come down.
The NHL has suspended Austin Matthews for two games.
I nailed it.
Without pay for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahle.
Whoa.
So now, I don't even care about the suspension.
How does that affect the rocket race, the heart race?
Their cap.
Their cap.
Matthews will forfeit $116,000 for the suspension.
The money goes to the player's emergency assistance fund.
Damn.
Full explanation at the link below.
Do you guys want to watch the video?
Yeah, let's do it.
The NHLPAs, I hope they get the voiceover guy in it.
I just hit my leg.
In on this one to do his fancy read of the situation.
We're off to a bad start.
The thumbnail is Austin off the ice, jumping.
It's not good, guys.
I know you probably wanted a different outcome, but it's not smart what he did.
Here we go.
If it happened to Austin, I would want the player suspended.
100%.
Yeah.
Okay, what a day's job.
Here we go with the video from the Department of Player Safety.
Two games for Austin Matthews.
Sunday evening in Hamilton, Ontario,
Maple Leafs forward Austin Matthews
was penalized for cross-checking Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin.
As the video shows,
Matthews and Dahlin engage in a battle for position in front of the net.
The battle escalates,
with Matthews using his stick to shove Dahlin,
and Dahlin shoving Matthews to the ice in return.
Matthews then gets back to his feet, approaches Darlene,
draws his stick back with both hands,
rises up, and strikes Darlene with force in the neck.
This is cross-checking.
While we acknowledge Matthews' argument that this is not a cross-check
meant to harm or injure his opponent,
it is also not a routine motion to box out an opponent or to gain body position.
Having just been involved in a shoving match with Darlene that knocked him into the net,
matthews aggressively retaliates by raising his stick significantly and creating this contact
this is a high forceful cross check that makes contact with an opponent's neck with sufficient
force to merit supplemental discipline to summarize i can't believe it was this is cross
checking matthews has been neither fined nor suspended previously in his 390 game nhl career
the department of player safety has suspended austin matthews for two games
yeah i mean pretty cut and dry there you are dude he jumped into a cross check that
i believe him when he says it rode up but you can't do that you can't do that man it's it was
yeah yeah accidents happen when you do dumb things it wasn't smart
well at least it made the show
i guess i guess bro i think it should have been one i think they got it wrong yeah i i hope it's
two going forward i hope i just hope it's followed up i'm with you if it's gonna be two now it's got
to be two for everybody and it's got to be at least one in the playoffs right no it should be
it should be fucking two in the playoffs i hate that rule yeah i hate that rule games matter
double in the playoffs apparently so yeah it should have it should have been one now i think
the precedent isn't there for two we we outlined it an hour and a half ago that they don't suspend
people for this and here it is there's two games all of a sudden it should have been one and i
think that's i think i think you're gonna have brendan shanahan tearing a strip off of gary
betman the leafs already believe that the nhl does nothing to to to help their stars support
their stars and not just the leaf stars anybody and i know the from from apparently from from
behind the scenes the leafs have been all over them about that well they can continue to be on
the outside looking in you're not going to win this battle guys yeah yeah should have been worn
out it's a ridiculous decision yeah yeah uh anyway we'll uh we'll leave it at that hey lots
of drama to talk about this week. The Leafs
who can't defend
the one guy who was their ticket
to winning games is now not
going to play. That is going to be
a fun and interesting week. Don't forget, CJ
showed today as well, trade
deadline special. He's got one
Sunday this week and then Tuesday
next.
Blake.
Connection complete.
