Scotty Sheffler
arrested this morning
birdies the first hole.
Did he birdie?
He birdied the first
hole.
I have never cared
about golf as much as
I do this morning.
There were people
yelling at him when he
walked up to the tee
like man you look hot
and orange.
that is that's one of the craziest i'm like still wiping sleep out of my eyes and i'm obviously very
gun shy after last week so i'm like all right are these tweets real yeah yeah yeah yeah i was i was
uh very cautious before sending it to my friends yeah what a wild day quite a crazy morning wow i
don't know if you could put money on betting when those charges will be dropped but i'm gonna bet
it soon today yeah um jesse did you have your hands in the air because of uh the golf story
why did you have your hands in the air jesse oh because the intro was playing oh you're just
happy just you're just jacked it's friday yeah and you had a freaking crazy game to stream last
night yeah fun game yeah yeah um i thought you were celebrating it being it's the only thing i
want to talk about no i assume i assume uh we'll start with oilers you want to start with oilers
i want to start with rangers i totally want to start with rangers no i think i think the biggest
series amongst our audience right now you think so oilers oh i was going for rangers but all right
oh all right we're doing what the audience wants now all right trade packages for marner the next
45 minutes here we go uh i got him i got a message on if we're starting with the oilers this is a
message i got from nate before the game let's hear it nate nate is an oilers fan love the pod
been a fan since 2017 but putting can we please give the oilers defense some respect uh no but
continue they're a top 10 team and expected goals against the last two seasons legitimately good
defensive hockey club even nurse cc has a positive goals for uh and expected goals for
in the regular season the only teams in the playoffs giving up less shots per game are
nashville lol and florida this team has a really good good in zone structure and our neutral zone
was cleaned up by chris knobloch which was the main reason for our woes early in the season
and all i have to say is what happened with 32 seconds to go nate whoa hey hey you think adam
I'm just trying to piss you off.
Oh, Hurricane.
Why are you going at me?
No, Nate's on.
Adam's been doing choreography on his victory dance since 3 a.m.
Oh, I'm just waiting for that Carolina Hurricane segment.
Anybody who says that this isn't a biased stream that Adam runs.
I don't see how it's biased.
It's completely biased.
It's not biased.
There's no bias in my stream.
My stream is completely unbiased.
Oilers fans, I'm here for you.
I feel for you to having to watch through Adam Wilde.
Just cheer on the Canucks.
When you tune in, you expect to see a national broadcast
where it's straight down the middle.
That's right.
Both sides are being cheered on and booed against.
But no, you get biased Canucks fan Adam Wilde in the chat.
You know what?
Vancouver has embraced me, and I do appreciate it.
Jesse's right.
This is typical Toronto.
What?
It's just typical East Coast bias.
East Coast, West Coast bias in this case.
It's just typical anti-Alberta.
It's anti-Alberta.
Oh, man.
You know what?
Why don't they just secede?
I said, why don't they just secede?
They should.
Who, Alberta?
Yeah.
They were threatening that a couple years ago when Trudeau got reelected.
Do you remember that?
No, I don't.
No, you don't, because it was dumb.
Anyway, I think you don't have room in your head for stupid shit like that, but I do.
I do want to say, though, the Edmonton Oilers.
You don't have room in your head to remember the Apples, though.
No, I don't.
Screw the Apples.
You stink.
I do want to say the Edmonton Oilers had an incredible game four.
game five they start out they're looking good and vancouver took 80 bajillion penalties in
the first period including did you see the pew suitor one like in the first minute uh no because
i was uh on and off dad duty okay so it was like i saw the game in part it was goaltender interference
okay but it was a play that it would have been hard for him to avoid okay and so okay fine it's
goaltender interference he interferes with the goalie it's fine fine all right uh the edmonton
oilers uh score later on on a different penalty uh there's there's bad penalties everywhere but
the vancouver canucks absolutely dominated the oilers from the start of the second period onwards
i think that they outshot them like 12 to 1 in the second steve you can see it here here we go
what are we looking at here i'm just gonna i'm just gonna show steve the goaltender interference
Yeah, let's not get a copyright flag this time.
Here, I'm just going to show you that, Steve, so you can see you running into the goalie.
That happened 45 seconds into the game.
That is goaltender interference.
Goaltender interference.
Even though.
Yeah.
And by the way, by mid-game, Canucks fans were throwing their beer on the ice.
Oh, yeah.
Dude, you know what?
The reffing.
Okay.
What?
The reason I'm going down this path.
What?
Is I got to say something.
are adam are they trying to screw your canucks no i gotta say something because i was disengaged
from the reffing reffing thing that we talked about it was it wednesday yeah you said you said
oh i i have apathy towards that like i do have apathy we shouldn't even talk about the refs
anymore because i'm so over it yeah was your take yeah steve was going off on the florida
boston he was right steve was right and i say that on behalf of both the canucks and the oilers
I don't even know who was reffing last night, but it was terrible.
It was real bad.
And it was not that it was bad because they wouldn't have called some of these during the regular season.
It was bad because, first off, they try to do these makeup calls.
So you have egregious calls.
The Pew suitor one, I can understand why they call that.
And then there's like a Quinn Hughes puck over glass.
Have to call that.
Dakota Joshua, there's an interference later on in the game.
It's Connor McDavid.
uh and then there was another one was it's a door off who there was like a trip or something
anyway long story short it wasn't the door off um there were trips there were ones that you're
like okay you have to call that i'll get to it adam but then but then get to it then you get
zach hyman getting called on just this oh that's not what i thought you were gonna say which one
you want to go to peterson it was by the way dan i was building to peterson dan o'rourke and uh
Francois Saint-Laurent, who we're reffing last night.
See, it's always a bad sign when you know their names,
because I've heard both of those names before.
Yeah, Dan O'Rourke is from Alberta.
Oh!
And which city in Alberta is he from?
I bet he's from Old Alberta.
He's from Calgary.
So right there.
You son of a gun!
The inherent bias.
Whoa.
Wow.
Is right in his birth certificate.
Just to piss off Adam, where are the linesmen from?
Linesmen.
There you go.
Where are the stupid linesmen from?
Matt McPherson, who has the worst name ever.
James Tobias, who has two first names.
Matt McMantheson.
Matt McPherson is from Nova Scotia.
Oh, yeah.
James Tobias is from Buffalo, New York.
Oh, okay.
Sorry, I have nothing bad to say about either.
I don't know if we have to give out their governments there.
Dan O'Rourke, though.
The Calgarian.
We're on you.
We're on you.
game let me that's something we gotta call out let me run the penalty suitor interference okay
fine i get it uh quinn hughes delay of game have to call it ian cole holding okay you're you're
pushing me a little bit pushing me a little bit but fine zach hyman holding the stick if you're
an oiler fan and you didn't hit the roof on this one oh this he literally he grabs the vancouver
defenseman for a minute like this oh just like this ah happens every game in the playoffs all
the time but the refs are like makeup call and here's the great thing is that later on in the
period uh myers and yanmark get into it and what's hilarious about it is myers is uh i guess it's
like a roughing call because yanmark kind of gets under his skin and then yanmark takes the biggest
dive because he's trying to go myers into more minutes basically but the refs have already called
myers for something yes they could have called him for cross-checking they could have called him
maybe for like so it's just a repeat of what happened with nurse and john yeah yeah and
initially they called yanmark for roughing but then they changed it to unsportsmanlike
because he didn't rough it he just dove and it was really and i was like okay all right all right
fine fine um and and i just it just keeps going and going and going but the the one that obviously
we got to talk about is the elitist petterson one yeah he is an elitist that's why he got called
the jump charge man now i didn't realize because i i'll be full disclosure i haven't sat and read
the nhl rule book in a really long time as scintillating as i'm sure that it is uh i looked
up the rule and pedersen technically charged oh it's a charge it is by the if you have ever
said hey just call the rule that's the rule but has anyone ever called the rule well so
let me let me let me quote ray ferraro because ray is go to the show in the snow go to the show
in the snow he ray is he's the best too humble for how good his career was yeah well didn't he get
like 1100 points that's a good way to put it yeah he's too humble he talks like every other like
hockey analyst who like i don't know played a couple hundred games you know you know third
fourth line grinder uh no ray ferraro had 400 goals that's a really good player he hadn't that's
not nothing that's not nothing he's he's very top quarter top whatever percent he also did it on
mostly garbage teams like most of the teams he played for were not great yeah and it's because
he was way whaler no whalers islanders like late 90s kings like yeah post gretzky kings like yeah
he was their best player no he's he's too humble for how good of a career he had and he very rarely
ever opens this door but last night he opened the door so let me read the rule 42 42.1 in the from
the nhl rule book 2023 2024 the most recent edition this is what charging is according to
a minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates jumps into or charges an
opponent in any man in any manner or is doing a lot of work yes a minor penalty shall be imposed
on a player who skates jumps into or charges an opponent charging shall mean the actions of a
player who as a result of distance traveled shall violently check an opponent in any manner
A charge may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame, or in open ice.
A lot of people are choosing to ignore the second part where they talk about distance traveled as well.
But I think it's because you can just say if you jump into an opponent, even though you're stationary, it also qualifies for charging.
well so because everybody's highlighting the jumps into an opponent part but the charging on
the second half of the paragraph institutes a distance traveled yes which is how we like in
our minds when you're thinking about the charging and the when you're playing chel and you skate
halfway along the ice mike stevens and you ram every ship the boards that is our like instinct
of what charging is yes but a lot of people are saying nick no it's if it says jump so jumping
at any moment is charging and it's just never called that way i think this is a rare example
because the rule book uh despite the nhl never explaining anything is pretty thorough clear on
this rule well i think this is a rare example of a of a a bit of a uh an unexpected incident
happening that is not talked about in the rules it's clear as mud well it's clear as mud because
think okay gather your three decades plus of watching hockey when have you ever seen someone
hit like that never stand completely still and just jump in the air all the people who are going
at you in the stream for not knowing the rule i i felt i was like those people you didn't think it
was the rule no you didn't and if you did you're a freaking nerd okay so like straight up you're
like i hate to tell you this but like anybody who's like yeah and do you know the secondary
definition of charging nerd you're a nerd you're a nerd go ref a game nerd no we're all learning
together don't act like you already had this oh but you have a podcast and you should know every
rule off by heart let's all take it one step at a time and read the rule because now we're all
learning this new definition it's okay we'd have to jump on adam here but also it's not like i've
been watching hockey for 30 years and i've never seen this but also i think it's valid when uh you
know like craig simpson on the broadcast i think it was craig simpson um his word is not gospel
but it means something when a guy played hundreds and hundreds of games and he's broadcasted
he might have broadcasted even more games than he played it's valid when he's like what
it's valid when a guy with that much experience is like i've never seen this before and if he's
never seen it before and he's confused by it you can forgive everyone else for being confused by it
So Ray Ferraro, who I was getting into, way too humble for the career he had.
But last night he took a stand on Twitter and he goes, no, that's a ridiculous call.
And then people started sending him the rule like they were to you.
And he goes, thanks for sending along copies of the rule.
All I'm saying is I've been around the NHL for 40 years and have never seen a player called for charging while standing still.
That's my point.
And I still think it's been a tough night for the stripes.
it was it was a brutal night for the stripes it wasn't just that call that's when the beer can
started being thrown yeah well it's what's important there isn't just the call because
if that's a random call on pick a name out of a hat pew suitor um uh i think you know it wouldn't
have gotten beer thrown on the ice but the building was shaking with energy at that very moment
they were losing their mind for alias petterson and by the way was looking good for the first
time these playoffs looking good amazing and he rocked someone i think who was a focal yeah on
on the oilers rocked him did you see that dude in the front row basically like kill his buddy and go
yeah like smash there was some testosterone in the air and then the whistle got blown and pd's
like me and the whole crowd is like mother like i've never seen a crowd like we've heard lots of
ref you suck i've never heard a crowd that indignant over a call because because they all
know it's bullshit too it was that call on that player at that time in the game thank god like
neutral observers everyone gather around let's all let's all hold hands and and agree on this
one thing thank god the oilers didn't score on that friggin power yeah yeah that would have been
so bad in the end i don't think the referees were the reason that vancouver won or the oilers lost
i know they weren't in the end it was decided on the gameplay and i thought the oilers were a step
back of what the vancouver's uh canucks were putting out there and like i i think the right
team one in that instance yeah here's the other thing vancouver held them to like i think that
vancouver got to like 30 shots and edmonton was still at 12 oh yeah like it was a better team
it's it's not even close and then the great thing was by the way after the pedersen call i'm like
well the next call is going against edmonton nope dakota joshua interference on conor mcdavid
uh but yeah but so when you look at the look at it on the whole the canucks had a crazy second
period peterson peterson and dakota joshua penalties aside they were and it was weird that
they only came out with one goal they tie the game up and and remember you got to remember that they
came off of the oilers scoring 23 seconds or something after they tied it up the first time
so it was that was a heartbreaking goal and then of course with 33 seconds to go man in the third
period jt miller playoff guy i don't know what happened to the oilers power play that's usually
so extremely deadly like artist silas i don't remember the last time like when was the last
time they uh they went a whole game they had five power play opportunities they don't capitalize on
any of them they ran into a latvian goalie get wrecked yeah that's insane yes no the canucks um
uh their sticks are extremely good on the power play especially high um edmonton uh can't walk
the blue line um with uh vancouver's uh penalty killers they can't do it and it's it's it's taking
evan bouchard out of the play which a lot of their power play runs through yep i i also think that
vancouver objectively dressed a better lineup last night so you look at you know we went through
sort of who pedersen's line mates have been the last you know lenis carlson and that sort of thing
it's like no offense to those guys but like lenis carlson wasn't even in the lineup last night uh
It was Hoaglander, Lindholm, and Pedersen as the quote-unquote first line,
even though I would still give that to Suter, Miller, Besser.
But that is a completely different set of line mates.
And if you watched the press conference that Pedersen had next day after Game 4,
he looked depressed.
He's going through it.
I didn't know it was that bad.
I had no idea.
When we were talking about it on last show, he had, I think, 4 points in 10 games.
i didn't know he was that down bad like well i did not know because you'd never know that
the series was tied 2-2 right in the second round like you are in a regular ass position
like the sky is not falling but it's it's guy who just signed big extension that kicks in next year
yeah and you to be to his to his credit he looked great last night got an assist
There you go.
Five.
You know who else got an assist?
Who?
Connor Brown.
Yes.
Set up Matthias Janmark.
Hayden put together a stat pack before the game.
The two worst forwards on the ice in terms of expected goals,
Philip DiGiuseppe and Connor Brown have both got points.
DiGiuseppe had two last night.
Let's go.
Dad strength.
Dad strength, yeah.
So it was a, I think it was an absolute classic
because you had a little bit of ref controversy,
but Jesse's right.
Did not affect the game.
kind of affected the game in some ways but i think in the end when you look at the right team one
yeah the edmonton oilers struggled in ways that i don't think they could pickard like
to all his credit he gave them a chance and when the offense is not there in edmonton it's always
hard to win and i'm surprised at the lack of offense that there wasn't like they scored two
goals obviously but you expect them to be a little bit more dangerous with the amount of
opportunities they had and just finishing is it'll just be the key for them going into
game six like you're back home it's gonna be good but um i worry about them the well the fact that
conor mcdavid had this is the second game in this series where he was invisible he really didn't
have and i hate to say to others fans he didn't have a great game the right dry sidle has been
the guy you don't have to look for him dry sidle has been unbelievable yeah like i don't like he's
the magic powers he has to step up his game come the playoffs has been just amazing to watch eight
out of the 10 games he scored points in in these playoffs have been multi-point games
and last night i think he only had one what well bum bum loser um no mcdavid in the regular season
is not a player you have to look for he's the blur that one yeah so you gotta squint a little
but last night and for big chunks of the series you have to look for them i i i smell a game seven
coming with this series yeah oh yeah yeah this is this is ripe for a game seven yep like edmonton
gets the next one they go back to vancouver and then who knows what happens yeah i i do wonder
you know i i do wonder if people have changed their views on the canucks i certainly have
oh yeah um because i didn't think they had this well i i i obviously my my doubts went back to
like november when i was like yeah they had a good start but like they've had good stretches before
then they win the division you go okay well they're a good team and then you know they play
nashville i was like oh they suck versus natural guys you're not giving the nashville predators
enough credit once the nashville predators learn how to score a goal if once they bring in steven
stamkos who or mitch marner or whatever trade deadline or whatever trade that's going to happen
this summer once they start scoring points the nashville predators are very back it was a
different kind of hockey like it wasn't like you can't say oh they suck they know they were playing
low event hockey both teams and it was just like all right so we're gonna just cycle the puck a lot
and not do a whole bunch but that's how vancouver won that series and now it's a different kind of
hockey yeah as a as a leafs fan i uh appreciate how hard it is to win a playoff series so i don't
care what team looked like the better one or what team locked the other who won who won you know
like uh let's let's break down the who what when where why after the canucks won and here they are
one win away from the final four i have to say calvin pickard looked pretty good last night
for the edmonton oilers i don't know what to do there oh i know what to do you keep calvin
pickard in yeah you cannot play stewart skinner cannot under any circumstances play that player
yeah he oh why why are you why are you buying this i'm sure i'm surprised no because i it was
a question heading into last night like do you do picker do you do skinner i thought you do pickard
pickard won i know who's this a debate for cj and julian really yeah okay cj was on so then
why are back in why are you still humming and hawing about it after last night well because
they lost oh they didn't lose because of pickard no they didn't you know i think i think pickard
jt miller almost ended the game i think earlier didn't it was it was it suitor who you tweeted
out the picture of uh that was uh jt wasn't yeah yeah i think it was jt and it was off the toe
and it was all picker made a fabulous save he was amazing i know i i think you're right i think um
starting anyone not named calvin pickard would be overthinking and i and i love this because you
know we're all ardent chair generals and uh like one thing that i i didn't mention this in round
one but like elliot was uh on 32 thoughts said that he thought for game five or game six the
Leafs should go with uh Giordano and uh Samsonoff like I think it was game five or something like
that because we all thought they were gonna lose yeah exactly remember how bad they were
like I when he said that I'm like yeah do it fuck it fuck it doesn't matter it's his last game yeah
do it who cares and then they won and I'm like okay no no no no no don't do that don't go doing
that now uh it's it's nice to i'm sure it was nice for patterson i i think for connor brown
uh that's got to be the nicest feeling in the world setting up that goal just because that
guy's had a rough season and when you see him his skating is still there i i think and i as a leaf
fan i want to play pay particular attention to this player i think it was underestimated how
difficult um it would be to recover from his injury yeah um everyone's like all right he's
gonna come back and he's gonna be great right away or he's gonna be con not even great like
connor brown right away like no offense to the guy but like even at his best it's not like you
expected 25 goals he got 20 goals he could do it he could do once or twice he might have got it
twice um i think you know one of the remarkable things about connor brown that uh he's done from
the moment he entered this league is he can play on any line and what he's done to survive this
year besides have a contract that you can't move is uh he's adapted to being a depth guy i'm no
longer 20 goal guy maybe one day i'll get back to that but right now i'm fourth line dude and i'm
gonna do what they need me to do it was hoglander it was hoglander neil's hoglander who had the
chance very late that pickard saved is initially see what i mean initially it looked like hoglander
hit the post and he just whiffed on a wide open net and then they showed the slow motion replay
and especially the net cam with the one that's in the net and you can see it there pickard got over
and he saved it with like the end of his toe it was fabulous and he saved the game in that instance
and it's and then jt miller ends ends the oilers life in that game but in that moment pickard like
he literally saved the game for them and it was an unreal save by the way there's there's been a
a bit of a retconning with JT Miller because we were really hard on him for a
while when,
when the Canucks were bad.
And I think how good JT Miller has been validates every criticism of him from
before.
You could have been better.
We,
what the hell was going on?
Yeah,
but we knew this was there.
We knew this was there.
He got like MVP votes a few years ago and then he decided back checking,
not for me.
and i thought getting rick tocket to fix one player was ridiculous and then he took this guy
put him as a part of the most terrifying penalty kill unit in hockey like him and elias peterson
were just outscoring power plays regularly and i'm like okay there might be something here and
now he's just he's he's a ludicrously good player i think that if i think people forget too that if
Ron Hextall had figured out a salary cap issue.
JT Miller's a Pittsburgh Penguin.
The deal was done.
I think the rumor was the Islanders as well.
Like, he was traded.
He was traded.
A couple times.
The deal was agreed to.
Oh, yeah.
100%.
So, you know, like, let's...
Here he is.
I mean...
Here he is, man.
No, and, like, imagine trading a player that important to your team
and also, like, not even recouping the assets very well.
like they probably wouldn't have got much for the guy and now he's incredible really good player
jesse yeah no like i look i think back to the probably the 2022 season 21 ish when it kind of
peaked the jt miller being frustrated on on the ice visibly in front of everybody fighting his
teammates clips that we would run on the birthday parties yeah and to see the player now it's it's
incredible and i think it speaks to that coaching does matter yes because oh yeah because the thing
that convinced me early on in the season that vancouver is actually good is them having rick
talk it in there and i think it's a huge it's a difference between bruce brujo and rick talk it
where one guy is i'm going to be really friendly to all the guys and be a kind of a player's coach
and the other one's like get your shit together we got a hockey game a bunch of passengers and
And yeah, you never really know what your team needs until you get those options.
And I feel like Rick Talkett there, if we're talking about JT Miller's resurgence, he's got to be the X factor.
He's also built for the playoffs.
And that's something that's said about people too often, but I'm going to illustrate it.
So early in his career, no, not built for the playoffs.
Two assists in four games, eight points in 19 games, three points in five games.
three assists in 12 games six points or sorry eight points in 17 games that's not bad
two points in four games that's not bad his Canucks playoff run yeah both of them 18 points
in 17 games and now he's up to 12 points in 11 games he has been a preposterously good playoff
player over a point of game with the Canucks in two separate playoff runs yep dude he's he's really
good I uh I loved I loved the game it was just an exciting start to finish um and uh there was a guy
in our chat who kept giving away subs and then when JT Miller he gave away 70 subs wow and he
and then uh yeah it was a lot of money and and I was so appreciative and then JT Miller scores
And he's like, ah, I thought I was going to get karma because he was an Oiler fan.
So shout out SKR.
Everybody loved him.
Vancouver and Edmonton fans were just loving him last night.
I thought I was going to get karma.
Well, you thought you could buy karma.
That's why you got bad karma.
There are a couple, by the way, players in the chat who are people in the chat who just have player names.
So there's a Leon Dreisaitl in the chat and a Brock Besser who keeps showing up too.
So I'm wondering if there'll be more players in the chat that show up.
that are you know i can't wait for phil d giuseppe oh man i love him i love phil d giuseppe i also
love connor garland i can go on and on forever about how much i love watching that player yeah

Cadillac definition of luxury I I uh uh I gotta say um I'm I'm dying to do the New York Carolina
game can we get please get to the New York Carolina game let's do it I'm dying I'm Adam
it was three one so no no no no no no first off what we're gonna do since we already all know how
it ended Jesse yes I just sent you a link this is you have to understand that this is my hot
take christmas okay this series for a couple of reasons hot take christmas one of them is obvious
and i'm sure you know what i'm getting to the second one not so obvious all right and it has
to do it has to do what do you think it is well i just want to know where the trap door in the
ceiling is that the frederick anderson pinata is gonna we're not we're not there yet no we're not
there yet no no i'm gonna take you back a couple of weeks to the nhl draft lottery with everybody's
favorite game show host bill daly mr charisma himself coming out and going this the this pick
is this this pick is that they should hire a host for that yes stop the head office doesn't need to
do that their head office their business people put them behind the scenes anyway long story short
you had one kyle dubas on that on that zooming in and oh you're doing the double dunk because
Because Kyle Dubas, you see, Kyle Dubas didn't have his pick move up into the top 10,
which means the Sharks get it.
So they get pick whatever, and they get the paint of his pick, too.
It's great.
It's amazing.
First overall, 14th overall, I think.
Right.
But they're going to get a pick back, right?
Well, you see, Kyle did try to hedge his bets, right?
And the thing about hedging is that it doesn't always work out for you.
Jesse, can you please bring up this cap-friendly tweet?
it's a condition update
from the Michael Bunting trade
okay
good lord that D'Angelo
trade is just an
abomination so bad so bad
but go up we're looking at Michael Bunting
the draft pick condition update
is the 2024 second pick sent
to Pittsburgh as a part
of the Jake Ensel trade will not upgrade to
a first pick because Carolina didn't
make the third round
additionally Carolina will retain
their fifth round pick so the oil or the
the penguins lose about 30 spaces in the draft and lose a fifth round pick which you know duvis
loves so that's one i think this is the appetizer today he's way more upset about the fifth
yeah 100 he's just weird that way it's just how he is he's he's a guy that's dying for an all-star
in the fifth round yeah and i don't know he's gonna get one i don't blame him i'm gonna get
one so there's that yep so jesse thank you for bringing that up just want to say at carolina one
Kyle Dubas would have a first-round pick today.
Well, no, not today.
You'd have an opportunity to get one.
So that didn't happen.
I think that one's a bit of a reach.
Now, that's not a reach.
That's an appetizer, my friend.
Now, Jesse.
Yes.
Let's go to, I only want to ISO these four or five events.
Because it was a 4-3 game.
But there were five events I want to talk about.
Geez, I got to keep putting on my glasses.
Put your glasses on.
I'm just going to leave them on.
Let's go to Freddie goal one.
Okay?
Freddie, goal one.
What happened here?
You know?
A puck went in.
A puck went in.
Did I get it?
But why?
Got it.
But why?
But why?
Because at that point, no one's really paying attention to Carolina letting a goal in.
It's just, ah, they're winning.
Right, Jess?
They're winning.
I mean, the reason Carolina lost this game isn't Frederick Anderson, Adam.
It's me.
Because I wasn't watching this game.
I was working on something else and I said in the group chat when it was 3-1 I go Carolina's
gonna do this aren't they so Jesse if you're wondering why that happened me I want to know
I want to know Jesse what your thoughts were on this goal you saw it live you were streaming it
live yeah it wasn't like at the time you could see like Freddie made a mistake on the play
where he he lost sight of the puck and then Panarin had the opportunity to throw it at the
empty net and trocek picked up the rebound now at this point look at the shots on goal 14 37
which doesn't which doesn't really tell the story of the game because the first period was very even
in terms of scoring chances and opportunities and time on ice in the zone it was more in the
second period where the hurricanes kind of opened it up early on so i don't think the shots tell
the best example of the game and that's one of the problems with the series is carolina are volume
shooters right and that they have a lot of low percentage shots that go on that and they block
a lot also do they block a decent amount but the rangers were never like throwing a whole bunch of
shots on that they just capitalize on their opportunity so that's trocek in front yes yeah
you know everyone wants to get the big guy the bad guy that no you just need someone who gives a shit
yeah you just need someone who gives a shit yeah that's not the rampire state building
no not the rempire state building no this is you have vinny trocek who is a regular sized human
and i look at this goal and i and i go i don't see anything that that egregious about it
a lot of i don't see anything about it just traffic yeah just traffic and by the way no
well this isn't like this isn't how the goal is scored well no but there's there's traffic okay
so let's yeah no like the the goal is bad when you watch it i think uh because it's the shot
it's blocked yes it's hard to describe it here in with the stills but so panarin shot the puck
there it's in the middle here on the mouse it's blocked freddy loses sight of it and it and it
comes back out here to panarin again what i couldn't figure out why his arm goes up in the
air here well you're you're watch his arm too keep going okay yeah watch his arm his arm goes up why
is his arm up so he he loses sight of everything so he's like trying to scramble back into the net
because he's all the way on the I'm trying to describe for people listening he's all the way
on his left side of the post on a block shot so if you can see right here this is the perfect
example Freddie Frederick Anderson is looking to the left side of the ice no the puck is currently
on the right side of the ice Panarin after he shot the puck the rebound bounces back to him
where he traveled back to the blue line and this opportunity is where Freddie lost it completely
and he's scrambling back panarin takes this long shot and freddie's like oh no i don't know where
anything is i'm gonna dive back to my net and when he does that the shot hits him initially in the
chest so on his weird arm up dive back the shot hits him in the chest and trochek who's in perfect
position picks up the rebound and pots it so i don't even hate this goal that much well it's not
great here here just it's not great go back three seconds sure because yeah it's freddy's fault
but what are they doing yeah no no what are the hurricanes doing that is quite the defensive
structure i think they call that the c curve uh i think uh i think they all the hurricane they all
thought after this block shot so on the one that was the initial freeze frame on panarin they
thought this block shot would lead to the sorry the save kind of would lead to the breakout here
so the hurricanes get the puck and they're looking to break out and they fumble it they fumble this
breakout and freddie doesn't catch it and their best guys are on the ice too by the way yeah the
hurricanes don't realize that hey we messed up this breakout panarin has the puck way far out
and he's gonna shoot it because great play by panarin who had a fantastic game last night every
single scoring chance the rangers had panarin was in on it it was great to see and he shot it just
so smart and it leads to that rebound so that's the first goal looking at freddy's footing like
i just i i think he was in the middle of a movement and his brain went abort and
another one and it didn't now like i don't think he meant to push like he's pushing across but
He's also pushing into his net because he was like half falling backwards.
Now, here's the thing.
The conclusion I draw from this is sometimes chaos happens and you lose sight of the puck.
And so if I'm going to dunk on the goalie, I'm actually going to.
This is not the goal for me.
All six hurricanes on the ice are.
Even though he's waving at Panarin like, thank you.
Pass it to me.
It's not great.
It's not great.
Like, it's not.
None of this is good.
Freddie's out of position.
In fact, I don't see a single Hurricane in position.
No.
Not a single one of them.
All six.
It's like it's symphony.
Yeah.
The Rangers were also because like they're going back to play defense.
They're playing like three.
I don't even count this guy over here.
They're playing like two on five.
Jesse, there's not even five Rangers in the offensive zone.
No.
Half of them are going for changes.
Having a hot dog.
Oh, my God.
It wasn't great.
It's not great.
But here's where it actually starts to go wrong.
And I'm going to point you to something that everybody missed the boat on this, including me.
Because we should have known there was an issue when this play happened.
Jesse, I've sent you the note on this.
Which goal?
It's not a goal.
Oh, the Martinuk save.
It's an almost goal.
And everybody wants to talk about Jordan Martinuk.
Man.
Also, just before people correct me, I kept calling it a Trochek rebound, but it was more like it kind of tipped it.
Oh.
If they corrected you for that.
no you should get things right yeah no it's yes we should i didn't you should always get it right
i was uh i didn't watch it fully i was trying to remember you know what stills but you know
what jesse how could you my bad egregious anyway let's let's let's look at this so jesse pull up
that screenshot you have right yeah the martin nook save wow what a save that's crazy i'm never
forgiving freddie if i'm martin that's crazy i'm never forgiving him hold on hold on stole my
moment but this is crazy and everybody was paying attention to this and there was the pictures from
inside the camera whatever that's great jesse can you rewind it just a little bit and let's ask the
audience what leads to this it's the puck going through freddie again this is freddie has this man
in this position i don't care what kind of breakdown led to whatever there is nobody
between freddie and this player it is a breakaway it was it was a clean breakaway one-on-one with
the goalie then he sees him coming the whole way oh adam you're not giving this man any leeway if
he if he embarrassed the the move isn't even that good the move is pretty stock and look where the
puck goes guys look at the puck goes yeah he got beat five hole net he got five you should have
been worried here if you're a canes fan if you're a leaf fan you already know you already know it's
it's it's coming apart at the seams here martinuk is that's so incredible that's so crazy but one
of the best plays we should have known we should have known that something was wrong at that point
because that's not a goaltender that's stopping it that's not a goaltender that's shutting the
door that's not a goaltender who's making saves that they shouldn't perhaps make that's not a
goaltender who's driving the team forward you don't like it going through the goalie like okay
You don't want to give up a breakaway.
If it goes glove high.
Matty's laughing like I'm making a joke.
I meant that earnestly, but it does sound funny.
No, you don't want it going through the goalie.
That's right.
And it did.
I think it's true that in this series as a whole,
the goaltenders that started for Carolina,
because Kochekov I don't think stole a game either.
I don't think Freddie or Kochekov stole a game for the Hurricanes.
Sure.
In the same way that Igor did, you know, where you have a goalie who can make saves that should be a goal and he keeps you in those instances.
I don't think Freddie or Kuchakov did that, but they gave them a shot in most games, but they didn't get you that extra save that you'd like to put you over the hump.
And they failed to do that very often.
Well, let's look at goal number two, actual goal number two.
That was almost goal number two.
Let's go to actual goal number two for the New York Rangers.
Well, Jesse's bringing that up.
Hurricanes fans, come on.
All right?
Listen, I know this is a bad day for you.
All right?
I get it.
David Ayers.
All right?
Let us have this.
It's not.
Not even us.
Let my friend have this.
I don't hate Freddie as much as him.
I don't hate Freddie.
I don't.
Oh, no.
You just hate his crap.
I know a regular season goaltender when I see one.
Oh, shit!
If Adam wanted to, and he's doing it.
If he wanted his Zapruder film for dumping on Freddie,
this is the goal I would have started with.
This goal, well, I'm just pulling us through timelines.
We got time to fill.
I 100% agree.
This is where you talk about your goaltender giving you a shot.
You want them to make a save based on fundamentals
and just getting things done.
This, 100% on Freddie.
You got to make this save.
What are you doing?
Jesse, so let's rewind it just a little bit here
because Kreider is about to raise his hands.
So Kreider creating opportunities.
This guy had a natural hat trick in the third period,
so you already know this is going.
But this is a Zabinijad shot.
That is from a tough angle that should be a dead nothing shot, right?
Yeah, so he comes around.
He's basically on the red line just off of the rock star zone,
and he throws it at freddie and the puck's sitting next to the post next to freddie's skate
and freddie doesn't react he's not hugging his post and crider follows the play and pokes it
and it goes right in that feels bad like that feels like a group of really intelligent really
talented forwards picking a goalie apart yeah because they knew yeah because they knew that's
that's not like a reading the play on the fly that's that's a that was discussed before if you
look at how the rangers score their goals throughout this series it wasn't high skill plays
and i think your analysis nails it right there it's very talented floors uh forwards doing uh
their their tips like the tip drills they would run crider had one in this game too
panerans like half of their half of their shots came from jacob truba throwing it on net from
the blue line and then just doing good hockey stuff and they never they never tried to beat
them with any china heights high-end skill stuff they beat them in these dirty areas and doing
little things like a little throw on the net follow the play punch it through the goalie who's
not in position how did how did the bruins score a lot of goals on the leafs in 18 and 19 when they
did score a bunch of goals because here's the thing freddy would have all-star caliber incredible
games yeah in the playoffs we saw and then the next game he'd let in six goals yes so what
happened what would happen that's what would happen they would just send a muffin on and it
would beat them there were players who scored on the Leafs in game seven who like I don't even
think are in the NHL anymore I'm pretty sure Joachim Nordstrom scored a goal and I it's never
good when in a game seven someone scores on you and you go who the hell is that it's that's when
the stars show up no a lot a lot of five hole and a lot of third period goals and elimination games
because they went into the third period up three to one when your season is on the line yeah yeah
when your season is on the line and you're trying to do the impossible and coming back from a 3-0
deficit in a series is an impossibility you know like you don't do it at 13 18 left in the third
period you need a save like this yeah and if i'm the hurricanes and i have all these pending ufas
and i know freddie signed through next year i don't know how you don't start next year with
kachekov being like okay if we gotta run it back in this tandem because freddie signed kachekov's
gotta be your 1a yes because you see at least you know in this instance you know what you got in a
in the most crucial part of your season if he's healthy freddie anderson is a very good regular
season option for you he played 19 games in the regular season though people forget that right he
was injured most of the year he's been injured a lot he's getting older was it what's that blood
clots blood clot oh is it blood clots okay sir fair enough but yeah he's had that he's had that
issue so he was out he was out yeah but for for medical reasons not for uh injuries injuries is
what i want to clarify with the leafs he was it was actual injuries and i think there was a blood
cloud issue too but he had like a hip problem and whatever let's look at goal number three
this is where the rangers tie it and this is where caroliner as well this is crider as well
this is where carolina season ends effectively i want to talk about crider once we're yeah
time on the rangers we're going through game footage this is the game listen crider's second
goal is not a good goal but it's a garbage perfect chris crider goal adam wilde all right it's god
Are you telling me that goal was a good goal?
No.
I'm just telling you.
Here we go.
Freddie Anderson on this one.
Go ahead.
Roll, please.
Please just roll.
Jesse.
I can't roll.
Okay, yeah.
We have to do still images.
So what we have is...
Jesse, get us banned.
Jesse.
I want to be...
How can we be demonetized as quickly as possible?
Raiders around the back of the net.
We have a wraparound.
And look at that.
Freddie.
Lingering comes around the back.
It's a simple wraparound, and he sends it out front.
Kreider's in perfect position.
Natural hat trick.
Rangers go up 4-3.
You'd like...
I'd like my defense to be first on that.
Yep.
I don't even hate that one.
Yeah.
I don't even hate that one.
But here's the thing.
With 4-20 left in the third, they should have been up 3-2.
Mm.
Mm.
They might have.
Might have.
Had they caught...
caught had he had he been in position earlier they might have been up three nothing but you see what
we're talking about with these rangers goals they're they're perfectly executed little hockey
plays you wrap around you throw it on front your man is there because he's a vet and he knows what
he's doing his name is chris crider and he's in position to score his third goal of the period
third in a row and that's how they've executed all series long getting all their goals and
And it's fantastic hockey to watch on both sides.
Like, Hurricanes played well as well, but they just got down too early.
I think I gave you the wrong goal there because I wanted to get the tie one.
Did I get the wrong one?
But anyway.
Oh, you wanted the go-ahead.
This is the 4-3 goal.
Okay, I wanted the tie goal.
I was like, wait, something's not lining up.
Yeah, I was like, wait a second.
That doesn't seem right.
While you're looking for the proper goal, let me give flowers to someone instead.
I have them all.
Oh, you have them?
Yeah.
Do you want this one?
Yeah.
We can do your thing.
What is your thing?
Are you sure?
Sure.
No, we're in the middle of Freddie.
No, we're in the middle of Freddie.
We'll do Freddie.
You want the power play goal?
Yes.
Yes.
Now, I understand that sometimes you go down shorthanded and you allow a goal, right?
And is this one that bad?
Is this one this egregious?
It's a cross ice.
It's the Rangers doing something amazing, which they're very good at.
They're very good at moving the puck.
They're very good at getting shots from the point.
As Jesse mentioned, it was Trouba and all these guys throwing pucks.
And in that case, it's not Trouba.
This time, it was Panarin who was everywhere.
Panarin throws it on net.
Great tip.
That's how they got their goals.
And this is what...
So we already showed you the 4-3 goal.
This is the 3-3 goal.
Sorry, I thought you wanted the 4-3.
No problem.
That's my bad.
This is the reason that the goal against the post
and the one in the first period just kill you.
Because goals that should go in,
goals where a goalie doesn't have a shot,
are going to happen you're going to take penalties you're you're gonna go down you're
getting you're it's the playoffs these are all very very good teams but when you go back to
goal number two that's that's the kind of stuff that sinks a team when you go back to what martin
nook saved that's the kind of goal that sinks a team and freddie was and is to me anyway still
a goalie that allows dagger goals goals that stab your team in the heart and and he wasn't good last
night he he also had some real stinkers in this series i think that carolina bailed him out on
the last game i i will say like that is the rangers power play picking the hurricanes apart right but
it doesn't it's not as much of a problem if you don't let in the shitty five on five goal
against the post or the or the one in the first period where yes there's a carolina breakdown
and there's some chaos but freddie completely loses the puck well that's you planting the
seat of doubt right and i listen we have we have a culture in hockey of you can't blame the
goaltenders actually you can't actually you can't this is not a goaltender who's going to get you
over the hump end of story end of story i don't think any hurricanes fan would leave this series
saying we have our goaltender that's going to lead us to the stanley cup final agree next season like
i feel like a base like obviously we have 82 games to play next year and you can play your way into
a role come the playoffs but if you were to start next playoffs with this knowledge only i think you
go into it and say yeah let's give kachuk off a run at this i think so you know because we kind
of know what we have here in freddie anderson so if that's the point to be made i agree with that
flowers give the flowers steve wants none of the flowers away no no it's like i just feel like no
i just feel like listen every time i said he was bad in the playoffs people are you know who you're
talking about dude i've seen this guy he was the books out the books out the second best goalie in
the series every time and every time he was the second best goalie in the series for the league
it's not every time it's not difficult to be the second best goalie when you're going up against
the best goalie in the world no so you know what okay fair flowers okay fair you know what i've
decided no flowers i because no no i'm gonna do the yeah you gotta do flowers but um i'm looking
for the stat that we were talking about last night it's hard because all we were doing was
talking about Adam Scheffler all morning. Scotty.
Scotty Scheffler. My bad. Adam.
My bad. Adam Schefter from the NFL.
Adam Hadwin. Yeah.
Oh, here it is. From Matt Larkin.
Canes, the Hurricanes
in Brindamore, Europe. Oh, boo this stat.
Boo this stat. Boo it.
And this isn't a shot at Matt, but
boo this stat.
Canes in the Brindamore era have been
eliminated by Tukarask,
Tukarask, Andrzej Wesolewski,
Igor Shosturkin, Sergei Bobrovsky,
Igor Shosturkin.
Yeah, there's good goalies
in the playoffs.
I actually tweeted last night that I think the Leafs
and I think the reason the Leafs haven't
picked a coach yet
because the rumor is it's going to be Tuesday and it's going to be
Berube. That's the rumor. Darren Dreger
said that. But
are you kidding me that they're not going to at least
try to find out if Rod is resigning in Carolina?
Why? If it's going to be
Berube, it's going to be Berube. No, I
like this game. I want to do
this game.
uh so the leafs braden holpe tukarask tukarask unis corpus ala jail jail jail yeah jail jail
uh carrie price andre vasilevsky sergey bobrovsky um jeremy swayman it's good goalies in the playoffs
yeah oh yeah sorry i didn't mean to cut you off there yeah no no yeah no it's good like
there's good goalies in the playoffs um corpus ala embers leakens jail so i want no no and then
Now I've got to do the flowers.
Do the flowers.
Chris Kreider is the most stupidly incredible playoff goal scorer
and criminally underrated.
So Joe Pavelski is also in that conversation.
He scored in game five his 74th career playoff goal.
It was his first goal of the playoffs.
He struggled in these playoffs.
But he's literally one of the best playoff goal scorers ever,
and he's got more goals in the Stanley Cup playoffs
since Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin debuted
than Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin.
He's a stupidly good player, and he never won the Cup either.
Maybe he'll get it this year.
Goals in the playoffs since Chris Kreider made his NHL debut.
Nikita Kucherov, 53.
Brad Marchand, 45.
Sidney Crosby, 41.
Oh, I'm not arranged by goals.
Sorry.
Joe Pavelski, 54.
Wow.
Nikita Kucherov, 53.
Andre Palat, 51.
Underrated.
Nathan McKinnon, 48.
Chris Kreider, tied with Alex Ovechkin for 47.
Now, here's the difference.
So, like, there's not a huge discrepancy, right?
54 to 47.
Chris Kreider's
played 117 games
Ovi's at 114
but Ovi's Ovi
Pavelski's played 136
Kucherov's played
147, Palat's at
150
Kreider kills
these guys, now there's only one player on that list
who he doesn't kill, Nathan McKinnon
48 goals in 87 games
Alien
What you're saying is the Leafs need Kreider
if they're going to score in the playoffs
Oh, whatever all those frigging rumors over all those years,
whatever your team thought about paying for Kreider,
they should have done it.
Oh, yeah.
They should have done it.
Yeah.
No, he's an absolutely.
By the way.
He's a crazy player.
And there's another guy who hasn't won the cup.
Shout out Andre Pallott.
Oh, yeah.
Andre Pallott.
Chris Kreider joins like a not elite company at all.
Wayne Gretzky and
Mark Messier is the only
New York Rangers to score three goals in one
period in the playoffs wow so
now it's maybe maybe
gave his award to the wrong guy
yeah
yeah you know
play for about that later on
this is
so Crider and Pavelski are the only two
in the top 10 so this is since
2012 who haven't won
a cup
asterisk on that so
So Pavelski hasn't won.
Kucherov has two.
Pallotta has two.
McKinnon has one.
Ovi has one.
Tarasenko has one.
Stamkos has two.
Point has two.
The asterisk is on Brad Marchand, who has won a Stanley Cup, but not since this stat.
Right.
Yeah, Brad Marchand won it, and he was like a rookie.
It was 2011, and he was a rookie.
Yeah.
But this is as of the 2011, or sorry, 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs when Kreider made his
uh debut and he had i believe five goals during that run as a rookie they oh good the rangers uh
made some line changes which they've tended to do throughout the playoffs um one of the
biggest changes was on defense where they moved keandre miller to uh well they moved up jacob
truba technically to the second pairing with miller and i thought it was a little better
because keandre miller i think is fantastic defensively and not having him paired with
gustafson you don't have that third pair that the carolina carolina hurricanes can just go
out there and just burn every single time you know when truba and gufson are on the ice the
expected goals are going to go through the roof of the hurricanes and that didn't happen because
gianja miller was out there even though they struggled a little defensively and i like some
of that's truba because he hasn't been great but i thought they were a lot better and they figured i
think i like that pairing you stick with that when you're going to game one against florida
part of it too by the way is caroline is very good yes like jake ensil is amazing again in the
playoffs because he always is jake ensil playoff jake ensil the the biggest the saddest thing
about playoff jake gensel we is we haven't got more of it recently let me look him up look him
up one thing we were doing on the stream justin fisher said if if i pick two players and if either
of them score he's going to gift a bunch of subs to the chat yeah and one guy i picked the one guy
i picked for the hurricanes was sebastian ajo and just if we're going through hurricanes hey they've
been really good but their season's over all that stuff i think ajo deserves his flowers there
because he was outstanding for most of the series a dumb penalty here or there but he offensively
he is one of the most underrated stars in the whole league and just what he does because he
plays in Carolina he doesn't get the recognition what that he deserves but Ajo was a star and he
scored last night uh on the Gensel conversation he is sixth in goal scoring since his NHL debut
and how much in playoff and and here's the thing how many goals and how many games because that's
the most impressive part uh he has 38 in stanley cup playoff goals in just 69 stanley cup playoff
games 67 points tricidal's a fucking alien crazy he has 39 goals in 59 games so he's actually
played fewer games than gensel and he has in those 59 games how many points let's take a guess
take a guess 59 stanley cup playoff games for dry settle how many points
oh my gosh it's i'm gonna i'll double it so i'll say 120 okay less than that probably 105
okay you guys are fuckers 98 oh which is still insane i expected them to be like
through the moon well i think that is through the moon the best stat is last year's playoffs
Two players finished tied for goals scored in the playoffs.
One of them was Jonathan Marcheseau.
He scored his final goal in Vegas' final game.
Leon Dreisaitl was the other.
He finished in the second round.
Dreisaitl's career, so 98 points in 58,
sorry, 98 points in 59 career Stanley Cup playoff games,
over an 82-game pace.
that's 136 points with the holy shit with the last note on the hurricanes before just some more
just gushing over the rangers they were truly all in in this playoff run uh their list of ufas now
that the season is over is brett pesci tony d'angelo brady shea jalen chatfield jake gensel
jordan martinuk stefan nason and uh tivo teravainen that is a list of some of the best players on the
hurricanes and obviously with all of those ufas a lot of them are going to come back but a lot of
them need new contracts and the rfas are seth jarvis jack jury marty niches like all of the
big guys on this team need contracts and this was their go for a year and it didn't work out
rumored to be there have been whispers about nature let me add to that jesse you know who
else is a free agent the entire coaching staff and don waddell and they're for the way they played
there are got to be questions with the coaching staff i feel like because we all love rod and
what he's done in carolina they've been very successful in his tenure but when they get to
the playoffs for their power play to be it started off oh for 16 in this series that's why that's a
large reason you're down 3-0 I mean that's the series right that's it at the first three games
you lose them you're 0 for 16 it's kind of it's right there and for the way they play defensively
where they play man a man defense man defense has never historically been successful in the recent
NHL most of the teams that win the Stanley Cup or go to the Stanley Cup are hybrid teams they
play defensively man slash zone hybrid or they're just strictly zone and then the low percentage
shots they take i don't we can rack up 50 shots but if like three of them are only high danger
then that's a coaching problem too they don't have the personnel for man and and like it carolina
doesn't i wouldn't say they have weaknesses but they have soft spots so if you don't have the
personnel for man is that not you're on your coach to switch it to a zone well like i mean
chat chatfield's been a really good surprise burns is big and tough and old he's old and
d'angelo why'd you get d'angelo back yeah we can fix him said the fifth team you already knew
like is like is that just a is that a philosophical thing like we know what he can't do but
you know he can move the puck like all right well sometimes you got to defend a two goal lead in the
third period and they they they they don't have the worst decor in the league by any measure but
it's you go and look at some of the recent winners they don't have that so are we looking at a team
that was very well built for regular season success and once they get to the playoffs and
playoff hockey is different they falter i have an issue they've i have an issue with that they've
won a playoff series like what is it you know let me let me let me let me tell you yeah here's the
issue i have when i tweeted that the the leaf should call rod you should at least call him
if you can if you're allowed to hello rod uh people were like what do you want sheldon keith
2.0 okay okay regular season coach guy guys here's rod's record in the last six seasons
lost in the third round his first year as the head coach lost in the first round his second year oh
man that's covid what year what year is that the he started 1819 18 he was the assistant for six
years before that comes it becomes the head coach uh in the summer before 1819 and so 1819 third
round 1920 covid lost in the first round 2021 uh lost in the second 2022 sorry 21 22 uh lost in
the second round last year third round this year second round and my analysis of the team that's
built for like tremendous regular season success and all that kind of comes comes back to like
recent memory of the florida series loss and what happened this year in that you saw florida i get
that he says they they played close but you see the some of the a lot of the same faults that
happened in this rangers series where their defense is good like it's solid but they're they're beat
consistently in these dirty areas and the low percentage shots and their offense dies at some
So I want to add to that, though.
Hang on, hang on.
Because I think you're right,
and I think you're about to say something,
but I want to jump in before you say it.
I think that's a philosophy
that is similar to what the one the Leafs had.
They built this team similar to what the Leafs did.
They weren't as top-heavy salary-wise,
but you're talking about a team
who built and played a lot of the same ways
the Toronto Maple Leafs were trying to play,
whether or not they accomplished it.
Dubas, on more than one occasion, I'm pretty sure,
said that they hold the Carolina Hurricanes
as somewhat of a standard in the league.
And I think we're seeing that that theory has its merits,
but it isn't the complete theory.
It's not the path to success
that it was theorized a decade ago.
Those six seasons under Brindamore,
I counted seven series wins.
Now, here I am as a Leaf fan
having an existential crisis.
is that actually good yeah is that better than it sounds in my head ask san jose
oh right like i don't know if you look at that tenure and i'm satisfied with the success i know
you read off a bunch of like second round exits and that final two final four appearances two
final fours and last year you got crushed and the first one was closer than that uh definitely
but i don't know if you look at that tenure and say like this hurricane team has been
over like are they satisfied is what i'm trying to say well no right uh like at some point um
like when it happens consistently it wears on you are the leaves bad have they been bad
for the last uh since 2016 no of course not make the playoffs every year regularly over 100 points
or flirting with 100 points.
They have a plateau.
And with the Hurricanes, what's the goal?
Win the cup.
Win a round every year, win a cup.
Yeah, you want to win the cup.
And grind your coach.
And grind your coach in the middle of the playoffs every time.
Definitely plant stories in the media about how you rescinded the offer.
Yeah, like whichever one of you guys is doing this,
because I wonder if Rod is playing this game with you.
If Rod did that, that's still bad.
I know.
Whoever, maybe they deserve each other.
I don't know.
Yeah, maybe I don't think it's helpful to anyone in the middle of the
playoffs, but I mean with the Hurricanes, they have to be wondering if
this team is good enough to do it.
They have to be well, I think part of it a part of it is have they've
never had they've always done goaltending by committee.
They always have and they've had some good results with it.
Yeah, but not great results.
I'm trying to think of their last like consistent bona fide starter.
Like, I want to say Freddie was nominated for the Vesna his first year there,
but I'm talking about, like, year in, year out.
Like, for, like, a three-year stretch where you're like,
this is our guy.
It's always, is Freddie hurt or is Antti Ranta hurt?
Oh, look, it's this Kochekov guy.
He's good.
Right.
Like, what I'm saying is you need a guy who you can turn to.
Like, they had Mrazek, and he was good for them.
That's why the Leafs gave him the contract that they did.
Like, who is their last consistent starter?
uh cam word i don't actually know maybe yeah like year in year but they are they are as of now
as a contractor as of 2024 they are this decade san jose sharks
they are and a lot and the sharks got further the sharks went to the finals i know a lot of
teams would kill for that um for that it's not good enough it isn't and so there will be changes
and the gm's up and the coach is up and the staff is up and all those players that jesse
mentioned her up i didn't know that waddell needed a contract that's news to me and interesting and
interestingly today remember i told you super veteran super veteran gm in columbus
so the ken holland to columbus rumors have picked up this morning i noticed and i would not be
shocked to see don waddell's name get in there too maybe both in cbj
just a thought uh i don't know if it's hot or not i think it's going to be eric tolsky's team
here and it's a question of because they really have been playing in eric tolsky and i've been a
big fan of eric tolsky they've been playing his strategy the one thing i'll say about the canes
what was the last trade they lost oh no they're consistently a very clever trading when was the
last signing they lost do they have bad money on the books the cockney emmy okay cockney emmy okay
it's not awesome it's not awesome it was really funny at the time yeah not awesome no but i think
that's a player that peaked in the rookie year yeah maybe oh my god the least really let that
guy ice them like oh my god oh my god like like brad said and he said it perfectly and by the way
It's the quote of the year.
I don't know why we haven't recognized it yet.
We turn every team's goaltender into the best goaltender in the league.
Yeah.
Hello, Doc.
We're talking about it again.
Yeah, yeah.
Hey, by the way.
No, no, it's game six this time.
Game seven didn't matter.
We all know it was over.
The Empire State Building tweeted that the Carolina Hurricanes should apologize to the Islanders.
Because the Carolina Hurricanes had their saying for this playoffs, which was cry, right?
Yes.
And then they retweeted themselves, and they're like, going to go do this now.
And then the Empire State Building, the official account, tweeted at them and said, apologize to the Islanders.
That's how the Empire State Building loses fans.
Like, even Rangers fans today would be like, no, no, no, no.
They did the right thing.
No, no, listen, we just beat those guys last night, but fuck the Islanders.
No, I think we missed out on a Subway series.
It would have been great to have them both in there.
Yeah, but, you know, maybe.
We saw the Islanders play in the playoff.
It wouldn't have been close.
this was much better for the entertainment time they got their ass kicked yeah real bad yeah
i think this was this was good for hockey fans yeah you know what the islanders should apologize
to jesse and i for yeah for making us believe that's who you should ending the season seven
two and one or whatever they did and uh eight one and one i'm pretty sure yeah they were so good
And we're like, oh, they're going to ride that.
You guys stink.
How dare you?
Sorokin losing his job.
Oh, God.
Yeah, you know what I wonder about?
Those are a couple teams I wonder about, Carolina and the Islanders.
They're teams that you look at and you go,
you simply can't continue doing what you're doing.
Like, Carolina actually can't because everybody's up.
Well, they already, sorry, not they.
The Islanders already fired their coach.
So, you know, there's some upheaval there, you know, heard some whispers of Lou leaving.
And then he refuted those and made me go, OK, cool.
Glad I didn't say that publicly.
I think they're going to tinker like that team has been together a really long time.
And they've done a lot of nothing the last three years.
Yeah, a lot of nothing.
Drafted OK.
like they have some good up and coming but like the hurricanes are in this weird spot where
they're clearly good and also clearly not good enough jay cancel is going to get a fortune this
summer from someone it ain't going to be carolina uh carolina apparently they apparently they do
want to keep them they just you know yeah you know how they are about paying for like six mil
like because they're nuts like get out of here well i don't i don't like what if simply less
said the carolina we're going to trade marty niches because he's going to get paid but also
we're gonna empty a brinks truck for no i'll be surprised okay jesse blake is influential
i wouldn't say that no i would you know why why because guess who's jumped on the ag1 train steve

Carla Koliakovo had a very interesting take
on First Up this morning.
Okay.
And it's making the rounds on social media,
and I thought I'd read a little bit of it to you.
Who tweeted this?
This is a fan account.
It's Jenea, but I did listen to it.
Ah, yes.
Here's what he says about Berube.
Now, wait.
We know this is true?
Yes.
Okay.
We know this is true.
one of my favorite coaches i never got the chance to play for hey carlo did you say this
if you bring in a guy like berube it has to symbolize a culture change because berube is
not going to be one of those guys who holds back in the on the things he says in the media
brutally honest uh and he doesn't tell you what he feels like you might want to hear he tells you
what you need to hear and that's something i always appreciated and i guess he goes on to
talk about the fact that you know some players don't get any communication as to why they're
scratch from a particular game that was a big problem in toronto with um mike babcock he just
wouldn't talk to you he'd just ice you um and i guess what about john tortorella with his captain
also a good point jesse also a good point so i don't know i everything i hear about this guy i
wasn't sold on him but everything i hear about this guy is that it's really good my question to
the two of you is okay and blues fans i want to ask you to is it actually or is this toronto
falling in love with a guy before he gets here only to later find out that he's a human being
and has flaws oh yeah now okay we do this we do this we did it with babs we did it with ron wilson
we did it with randy carlisle it is there's the name our team is too soft and they don't listen
and we need a hard ass who's gonna come in and be a hard ass and he's gonna say i want a stanley cup
with a big belligerent team because i was a hard ass and we fall in love with him before he's even
named head coach that fits the randy carlisle timeline exactly now i'm not exactly different
Completely different people.
Different eras.
I'm not doubting what Carlo is saying,
but are we as fans jumping in with both feet
when we really should be like, wait a second,
I'm going to let the results come to me first
before I make my mind up?
No, we're making like fairly ridiculous.
Oh yeah, Rod Brindamore is just Sheldon Keefe.
You know how many people said that prior to two weeks ago?
Zero on the planet.
None.
What are you talking about?
Keefe and Brindamore?
not the same they're not the same and you know now here we are going craig berube randy carla
it's i'm more talking about it not stylistically uh just in terms of uh reaction pre-hiring we've
got a name stuck in our head none of you wanted brad for living let's be honest you know what i
mean brad for living was the only person available at the time yeah how quickly the leafs made the
decision to fire dubis and then how quickly they had to make a decision to hire brad treliving a
new general manager and brad treliving was just recently fired by calgary he's like okay here's
an experienced general manager who works in the canadian market uh works in the game for a long
time that has a good resume let's hire him it wasn't like there was this extensive search for
over a month with all of these great candidates it was treliving's available he fits every checkbox
let's do this like to me you need a you do need a coach to deliver a message you need a coach to
get the most out of your players the end of the day it comes down to the players
you know what i mean like no matter no and they're switching up the players though yeah well exactly
like no matter who the president is no matter who the general manager is who the coach is
and you know hearing what Craig Berube is does make a very very small percentage of my brain
like I'm talking like 0.8 percent I'm not even gonna give it one 0.8 percent of my brain is like
well what if you just gave this group to Craig Berube no no no no no no I want that that attitude
is appealing to me and also change there has to be change here in terms of the personnel so
well otherwise there's no accountability yeah right I guess what I'm saying here is like I
we we had this conversation recently how many truly great like other echelon coaches are there
in the NHL is that number big my guess is no um is Craig Berube in that echelon my guess is no
my guess is no like are those consistent results there like who's in that conversation like
john cooper is definitely in that conversation
is paul maurice creeping into that conversation or does he just have a team
perfectly built for paul maurice well creeping but he hasn't won anything he has can't yep he
can't be in it he hasn't won all right so is it john cooper and no one else bruce cassidy
had a lot of success in boston lost in the finals two two appearances in the final and then won the
championship with vegas yeah yeah yeah he might be in there i'll uh i'll concede to that it's a
good answer like i guess i guess what i'm getting jared bednar don't get too too jared bednar is
pretty good that's a good answer like don't get too too caught up in the name i guess is what i'm
saying like you gotta wait for the effect on the actual team yeah and that unfortunately is months
away well you need a coach who will get their players to listen um this is for a lot of these
stars gonna be their third coach and maybe what you find out with craig berube is they don't listen
and then it's not the coach's fault it's yours for not moving off of the players
so like i it'll be exciting the day that the leafs um uh
sign a new head coach i was really excited to see mark savard's name thrown in there
yeah former co-worker i think i think it was uh boomer on the barn burner podcast apparently this
morning said that savvy's going it's confirmed one of the leafs empty netters um did they have
it said it last night okay there you go um so they're all over my tiktok and now they're also
all over my twitter i didn't i followed them last night i didn't know they had it so i followed them
I'm sorry.
No, I was really excited about that.
I bet they were super pissed that you hadn't followed them.
Probably not.
Probably don't know I exist.
I hadn't even thought of the assistants coming from St. Louis
or anyone who had worked with Berube.
So I was really happy to see Savard's name.
But in terms of a head coach,
I think we overanalyzed that hockey is rocket science.
And I think the Leafs right now have the talent
um that what they really need is a motivator they need a motivator and sheldon keith we he's i don't
think he's that i i think he's x's and o's guy and you know uh that clip going around of the game
seven prep sheldon keith and td garden going all right let's have fun and you got barubi like let's
go with the fucking cup of light like it's just they're two completely different styles if if you
need that sheldon's not your guy he's great at other shit and if you want him to be that guy
for you go and get him he's probably one of the better guys in the league at that but and perhaps
if you need someone to bring hellfire and brimstone that's that's not him have you ever
seen that uh that tiktok trend where it's like uh men and women are pointing out things that they
like about their partner like hmm somebody cooked here as in like somebody somebody taught this
person how to do this thing right before me and i feel like maybe maybe if keith is the x's and
nose guy and berube comes in and see some success maybe there's a little bit of hey somebody cooked
here a little bit but we got you to do we got you motivated to do the right thing this time
yeah like what like what happens when a coach gets fired mid-season and then a new coach comes in and
they go on to win the cup which is something berube did do all the players go oh that's how
you play like do you do we think berube walked in there and went to jordan bennington he's like
What if you, like, made saves?
Yeah, what if you just saved the puck, rookie?
Oh!
Jake told me not to.
Oh, Jake.
Stop.
Allen, Jake Allen, in case you were wondering who Jake was.
Like, I think the Blues needed a motivator in there and some friggin' saves.
Because they were a team with outrageous talent.
yeah and they went from last place to unbeatable and won the cup you know like i again i don't
think this is rocket science can i give you a stat that talks about head coaches and their
stanley cup pedigree yes please give me i don't know jeff merrick said this and it blew my mind
if you look at this is a crazy stat yes you look at head coaches who have won the stanley cup and
then gone on to win another stanley cup with a different team the list for me begins and ends
with scotty bowman because only three head coaches have ever done that in the history of the nhl
okay scotty bowman have won a cup with more than one team have won a head coach who has won a wow
won a stanley cup with more than one team the list is three people let's see if i can name
Scotty Bowman.
No, you can't.
Tommy Gorman.
Oh, no way.
And Dick Irving.
Tommy Gorman did it in 1934-35.
Doesn't count.
I'm sorry.
Dick Irving did it in 1932-1946.
He won it with the Leafs in 1932 and then won it with the Canadians in 44, 46, and 53.
Traitor.
Doesn't count.
So let's look at modern era.
coaches who have won the stanley cup with multiple teams my it starts and it ends with scotty bowman
who won with the canadians in 73 76 79 the penguins in 92 and then the red wings 97 98 and
02 so the idea that a head coach decades to scotty bowman's on another level yeah yes so even if you
want to say scotty bowman's a unicorn and nobody can reach scotty bowman so you x him out on the
possibility of that the list is kind of zero so the idea that somebody wins a stanley cup
they go to their next team and you're gonna see a success isn't true pedigree doesn't matter then
it's never in terms of winning the stanley cup in a vacuum here it's never happened which is
my other replies to my tweet last night about rod brindamore oh i want a coach who's won the cup
no no you don't actually you actually don't at all statistically if your team signs a
coach who has won the stanley cup you are virtually guaranteeing you will not win it
yes unless there are crazy unless there are six teams in the national hockey league or that man
is scotty bowman outside of those two specific scenarios wow no other head coach has ever done
it what were those two years that the the other guys who aren't scotty bowman did it dick irving
did it in 32 with the leafs and then 46 44 and 50 you said the first one so so dick irving did
in 32 and 44 uh tommy gorman did it in 34 and 35 so in back-to-back years he traded teams
because there were so little teams my mother's mother who has been dead for a very long time
was born in 1935 there you go that's how long the year tommy gorman got his second championship
with a second team a 91 no 89 years ago that's 89 years ago wow yeah it's so i think if you want
a head coach time for that record to change isn't it jesse i agree come on so either
Or Craig Berube signs with the Leafs and he breaks the impossible record
and becomes the fourth coach to ever do it.
Or the Leafs should go with somebody who's never won a Stanley Cup.
I don't think – thank God Jeff said that because I don't think anyone has ever framed it –
well, he didn't frame it this way, but I'm going to.
If you sign a coach who won a Stanley Cup with another team,
you've basically signed your own death warrant.
You're not winning the Cup.
Statistically, unless their name is Scotty Bowman,
they have a 0% chance.
Or they were coaching before Steve's grandmother was born.
Yes.
You have in a league with double digit numbers of teams,
you have a 0% chance of winning the Stanley Cup.
If the head coach you're signing is not Scotty had previously won the Stanley
Cup and they're not named Scotty Bowman.
Yes.
What are the things that the Islanders apparently did when they were looking
for head coaches to replace Lane Lambert?
is they they looked at coaching careers and said where do coaches find most of their success their
second team their second team now this will be berube's second team you know what i just realized
what no we're so fucked sheldon keeps gonna go somewhere
they are winning the stanley guy new jersey enjoy oh my god jack
Hughes. We just handed the Stanley Cup to
Jack Hughes. Oh, no. The Brat Pack are going to
be insufferable. Oh, no.
Akira
Schmidt. Welcome to
the Stanley Cup. Your name
is going to be etched in there forever.
Dougie Hamilton's day with the Cup is at a museum.
It's going to be great. I can't.
Oh, no.
By the way.
Oh, God. By the way.
One of these days, and today is not the
day. We need to go through
leading up to free agency, the free agents
that Brad Treliving got in
got in the door
last year. Because he took a lot
of shit. No, I'm too depressed.
And I feel like we got
an exciting free agency coming up.
Can't do it? Can't do it?
I want to do it. We got Sheldon Keefe a job
too early. Fuck.
Right guy,
wrong time. Exactly.
You know? In a different lifetime
we would have been together.
You and I, Sheldon Keefe and the Stanley Cup.
I hate these stats breaking my brain.
All right.
We got a brand new head coach.
Waste of time.
He won before.
Yeah, he won before.
Guys.
Waste of time.
That's why Rod's your guy.
Second head coach job hasn't won the cup.
You've convinced me.
Send this clip to Rod.
You've convinced me.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
Rod.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
He's in great shape.
He's in great shape.
Crazy.
We will put dumbbells on the bench.
Whatever you need.
You know what?
i think is funny adam went to leafs content and off-season content before we talked about
florida boston or dallas colorado who cares his people got in the chat people got out of me
maddie you find that funny why listen it was the right call and i stand by it i'm pretty sure that
was like 40 minutes yeah yeah it was the right thing no i got columbus in before the coach all
right sometimes you need to get a little off season you did get columbus in before florida
Boston or Colorado.
Columbus is the worst run team in the NHL right now.
I'm fascinated by what they do.
I can't wait.
And you know what the great thing is?
Whoever they bring in, they're going to have some weird success.
And weirdo Columbus fans are going to be like, see, we told you.
Okay.
Now, the Colorado Avalanche, stay of execution.
Man, that team is absurd.
They're absurd.
I mean, Kael McCarr can do whatever he wants,
and Nathan McKinnon can do whatever he wants,
and there's not a thing you can do about either of them.
You can win games in series that way.
Yes.
Your goaltending is meh.
Your defense is pretty good.
You didn't have much depth to begin with,
and now you have less.
Like...
Yeah.
But those guys, it's like they have a huge problem
scoring the first goal.
I think it's seven games in these playoffs
they've conceded the first they love trailing and coming all the way back and scored a bunch of
goals when when like uh ice tilt is a thing like when um when a team score effects are a thing
that's the deserved winnometer essentially yes when a team is down and they cheat for offense
no one in the entire nhl is close to them not the oilers not no one when the avalanche decide
it's fuck defense season it's crazy no one's better what about the ducks close what about
the sharks yeah the canucks are pretty good flyers where'd you what about the sharks i'm
just i'm just listing teams who's who's better than them no go the sabers no the red wing no
The Panthers.
No.
The Lightning.
No.
The Islanders.
No.
Do you want to keep going?
No.
Yes.
Please, God, no.
Please, God.
Oh, come on, Adam.
There's 32 teams.
We need to find out.
We can't.
Well, no one is better.
No one.
Not even close.
But everybody, honestly, if you polled people, I think most people would say the Dallas Stars
are the best team remaining.
No.
Dude.
my uh stanley cup final prediction of stars rangers right now this could change aggressively
in the stars i already did it though like i already picked them i it's looking not bad
no power rankings i got rangers over stars really yeah the rangers are so deadly right i mean their
goaltending is other worlds spectacular what what do they both have in common um they're both
getting goaltending um and they both can score from everywhere in their lineup oh yeah dallas's
depth is insane the depth on the rangers is insane like their four group is insane um uh who
was your stanley cup pick adam uh the toronto maple leafs no what was the matchup i think it
was leafs oilers you're oh yeah leafs oil i always pick the leaf you know this yeah i will not bet
against the leafs that's my rule you fool i don't listen it's a bracket i'm not hinging my masculinity
on it i don't really i don't really care that much what i'm here for was that an option on me
stupid you don't know that this you didn't know either you didn't know either these guys who are
both very intelligent people pick the islanders to win this the first round and so did maddie
oh maddie oh no maddie you didn't okay sorry maddie go ahead who's who's your bracket i was
just gonna say like even i picked the canucks oh hey there we go the number one canucks fan
doesn't pick the... I know.
Called out. Yeah, it's true.
Bias. It's true. Bias.
Bias, yes. I'm anti-oilers now.
And anti-oilers. Adam
biased.
We haven't done a check-in on our
bracket challenge. Remember, we have prizes on the line.
Oh, that's right. Let me
see if I can pull up the SDPN
bracket challenge if you guys
want to filibuster for me in five seconds.
View brackets. I'm looking at it.
I have to log into NHL Zone.
NHL Zone, Steve.
yeah no there's nhl ed and there's nhl zone there are a lot of things yeah edge excuse me edge all
right view brackets all right you ready i i had to name i couldn't name myself adam wilde because
the team wouldn't let me or the uh and uh i do want to say that i got the entire western conference
correct hey well done to the second to the second round uh and i got half of the eastern conference
So I got Florida, New York.
I got Edmonton, Vancouver, Colorado, Dallas.
So I get Jack.
I get Jack.
No, you don't.
So our SDPN bracket challenge is still going on.
And we have, as we announced at the beginning of the playoff, some prizes.
So we have a Jonathan Marcheseau, Jack Eichel, and Mark Stone figurine dolls.
I can't wait to give these to Dallas Stars fans.
That the winner will receive.
You get your choice of which one you want.
and uh whoever is in first place of the bracket challenge once the playoffs ends right now
wait adam actually you don't have your box properly injured reserve oh right now i have
right now i have up the standings of the sdpn bracket challenge in first place
vojta underscore m underscore sc holy moly there's only been vojta wow and second place
mo money 12s bracket one third place we have a bunch of ties for second actually um one two
three four five six six people are tied for a second uh sin 62 cody james jesse 98 not me
ryan and jay they're all tied with 128 total points one of the a lot oh there's my bracket
one of the top 10 has uh boston winning the cup hanging out by a thread so the cup picks amongst
the tied for first and second uh we got dallas dallas dallas rangers bruins oilers dallas
oilers holding on by wow yeah my uh my bracket was melted that first round holy shit two thousand
how many people are in our bracket it's a lot i'm where are you sitting adam what number uh
i'm pulling it up hang on i where are you i have no idea i'm 94 of 194 i got 78 correct
No, what is your rank in the league?
Oh, oh.
Have you joined the wrong league?
Check that.
Please tell me.
No, no, I'm there.
If you just go to the league, you'll see on the side it says rank.
I'm 2,424.
I hope you did not listen to my picks this playoffs.
Besides my cup pick, which is still alive, the New York Rangers.
Yeah, you can still get better.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
You can improve.
I am 465.
Oh, that's not bad at all.
That's not bad at all.
Damn, yeah.
But the thing with mine.
Pick the Leafs, though.
so yeah yeah no i'm toast you're gonna go down the standings as the playoffs go along you're
gonna fall yeah but i had even i are gonna rise that are good first two rounds and i'm okay with
that i have to pick the leafs that's my job no it's not my job is to pick the leafs it's not to
win that is not it's not your job dolls it's not your job all right all right steve where did you
i don't know how do you find it you go to that's just not that's just it will be here all go to
NHL Bracket Challenge.
Okay.
Google it.
Do we want to do a press conference?
Jesus.
All right.
If you don't want to.
No, I want to talk.
Well, actually, hold on.
Florida-Boston.
Just want to say it's the other series that could end tonight.
Adam doesn't care about that series.
I need a pick.
I need a pick.
And by the way, I respect the hell out of Brad Marchand saying, yeah, I didn't like
it, but I've done it to a bunch of guys.
How about Sam Bennett?
I respect that.
At least he owned it.
All that is, is I'm not going to complain about Sam Bennett, so I still have license
to hurt people.
Right.
Yeah.
Well, it's the playoffs.
You know, you're trying to hurt other guys.
Yeah.
How, Brad?
You're not allowed to punch guys in the head.
No, I'd give him no credit.
You'd give him no credit?
No.
Wow.
All right.
I'd give him no credit, nor do I give any to Sam Bennett.
I hope this series goes seven.
Those two teams deserve each other.
Okay.
So you don't think it ends tonight?
I hope not.
Okay.
All right.
All right.
Nothing against Florida.
It's just I hate you both and kill each other longer.

Press Conference
You guys just
You guys just destroying everything over there
Absolutely
Alright, first part of the press conference
Somebody on
Discord
Let me pull up their name so I can shout them out correctly
actually it's not even them who who pointed this out but and union 92 alter bridge fan like
i don't know probably what is what is annunen used to sanning yeah used to say no no no it's
not him no no i thought it was a canabs fan okay yeah no not used to it yeah never mind
nashville fan what am i saying they wrote by the way yesterday's episode was not the first time
they as in us talked about the mark messier leadership award oh okay someone in the comments
so somebody on the youtube comments yesterday or wednesday show said that they first talked
about it in 2019 and basically had the same reactions on how the process is done oh my god
really so this discord user pulled up our video who the hell used to shoot our podcast spider-man
so the for the if you're watching on youtube right now and you're looking at one of our old episodes
um the space wasn't big enough at first to shoot all three of us right like i couldn't put the
camera where like see where the other mic is and we wouldn't be able to get all of us so i had to
go up top and kind of shoot down and eventually i kind of figured it out and we got i got it like
on a table and we've had a good angle where you can see all three of us but if i shot it head on
at first i just didn't figure it out until how we get so that's why we're kind of in pie in the pie
eye in the sky whoa shot eye in the pie but thank you for distracting try and do this can we get to
this yes okay so in 2019 we've been around for so long that i'm excited that these things are
starting to happen there's a lot of new listeners but there's a lot of old listeners and i'm sure
that we're going to start repeating a conversation
hundreds of times now that the show
has been around for over 11 years.
So in 2019, we had this
exact same conversation about the
Mark Messier Leadership Award.
In the cup six times.
An award that recognizes an individual as a
superior leader within their sport and a
contributing member of society.
It can't just be a great leader.
It has to be a contributing member of society too.
I don't know. So you've got to do like
a volunteer's award? I don't know. I don't really know if there's
any proof of that. I think it's more the first than the second
to be honest with you.
Because I...
Good breath.
The award is given
by a player selected
by Hall of Fame
center Mark Messier.
Oh.
It's his award.
He selects it?
Wait.
Sorry.
I didn't know this.
Wow.
Wait.
We're breaking news here.
Where are you reading this?
Wikipedia.
Okay.
The award...
That would be really funny
if it was fake.
The award is given
to a player...
Can we check this?
Can we cross-reference this
with NHL.com?
I'll look up on NHL.com.
I'm gonna read this again. That's a great fake if it's fake.
The award is given to a player by Hockey Hall of Fame Center Mark Massey.
Given to a player. It doesn't mean selected.
The award is given to a player selected by Hockey Hall of Fame Center Mark Massey, yes it does,
to honor an individual who leads by a positive example through on-ice performance,
motivation of team members, and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes.
Is there like a reference you can click on there?
There is not. You were so shocked you didn't believe it.
It's like, wait, Steve, let him talk.
Oh, here you go.
Here you go, from NHL.com.
So, the Mark Messe Award.
What I'm reading right now is the exact page I read.
That is the page I read on Wednesday.
We stink.
And here I am in 2019 reading it to you guys.
What a bunch of idiots.
I don't know, man.
That's probably 500 shows ago.
Yeah, but it's funny.
There's no way we'd remember that.
Yeah, but it's funny.
That's hilarious.
Where's the MLH segment?
So here's me reading the page.
The Leadership Award has been around since 06-07.
It is given to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team
on and off the ice during the regular season.
Suggestions for nominees are solicited from fans, clubs, and NHL personnel.
But the selection of the three finalists and the ultimate winner is made by Messier,
A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and one of the finest leaders in NHL history.
The six-time Stanley Cup champion is one of three players to have been given captain of three teams
and is the only player in NHL history to be captain of two teams that won the Stanley Cup.
No player has won the award more than once.
Okay, so cheering for this league is agony.
That is really bizarre.
That's crazy.
It's nothing but pain.
They gave a guy an award and said, hey, just go pick a guy.
i said that wednesday yeah you're incredible okay so here's here's what i got yeah well they won
one without yeah whoever whoever wrote this on the youtube comments like shout out you like we
don't even remember that well i love the nhl and saying he was the captain of three teams
yeah can i expand you're like no he wasn't including the oilers and rangers yeah so we
don't need to keep going but in this clip adam you list all of the winners oh and steve in this
clip no adam reads wayne simmons and you have the same reaction that you had on wednesday i don't
know if you want to keep going we can play it but the same reaction you had on wednesday to like
wayne simmons it's almost a verbatim that's amazing yeah that's amazing
he wasn't a captain so really good stuff shout out um shout out all you guys who have been
listening for a long time and remember more about the show than we do clearly
like you guys are you guys are awesome yeah are we charging them for that
like for the ad clip in our show we should no no no yeah crazy huh i would i would love to
so we can end it on uh we can end it on that okay yeah well no we uh oh i mean one more note yeah
we should at least offer our condolences to the friends and family of uh darren detition um i mean
he's he's one of the voices of our our childhoods um if you're of a certain vintage um just an
incredibly positive guy um that you ever heard anyone have a bad thing to say about darren
no never never in your life um you know we should all we should all uh live a life that we could
look back on with the kind of contentment that i i hope the people around him do um like just a
really good guy a really big impact on a lot of people's lives and uh he'll be missed absolutely
what what we do in the grand scheme of things like media people and sports and all that stuff it
doesn't matter like in the grand scheme of the world it doesn't matter but there are certain
personalities that live with you day in and day out and darren's showing up on sports center every
morning or every evening or whatever shift he was on and watching that that makes these jobs kind of
matter because they come up they become about your life you know they're they're a member of your
family and you're every day and darren entered that portion of of fandom for a lot of people
who grew up in the Toronto area
who just watched him on TV every day.
Oh, Canada area.
Yeah, Canada, across the country.
He's a guy from Saskatchewan, man.
For anybody who grew up in the GTA,
they grew up a fan of SportsCenter
and watching that,
he was a part of their life
and it's sad to see him go.
He was ridiculously jacked.
There was a funny segment
you can probably still find online.
I think it was James Duthie
was supposed to do
the Draft Combine exercises
and for whatever reason,
he wasn't available to do them.
So they had Darren Detition do it
And he obviously frigging rocked it because he's shaped like Brock Lesnar.
But I had a friend in university who got a job at TSN and he was into fitness and working out and everything.
And one day he saw Darren like walking towards the fridge and he's like, I just, I got to follow him.
I got to see what Darren Detition eats.
What does he eat?
Yeah.
I got to see what he eats.
And so he's telling me that and I go, all right.
Like, what was it?
And he was so angry.
He goes, it was a bowl of fruit.
He was just so pissed.
He's like, I know that's not why you're jacked here.
It was, it just, it made me laugh.
We used to do early on in the, in the podcast.
We, and I told this on the stream last night, we used to do, Steve used to do these impressions.
Obviously Bob Cole was one of them.
Don Cherry was another.
Vastotoskola, Mike Babcock.
You know, there's a few of them that Steve really nailed.
and you do a good John Tavares as well.
But one of the ones he used to do really well
was Darren Detition.
Yep.
And because Darren Detition's big thing was,
bang, Leafs go up 3-2.
Or bang, that's a home run.
Bang.
Yeah.
4-1 game.
Yeah, right?
And so when Bardown was,
because we predate Bardown,
I'm pretty sure,
where it was just a blog.
Maybe, yeah.
It was like,
I don't know.
It was right around the same time.
So in our first season,
in our second season,
Steve would do the Detition thing
every once in a while.
And Bardown actually took it
in an interview with Darren Detition and played it for him and he and talked about how you had
said that you worked at NHL Network which used to be in the TSN headquarters and how you were
too afraid to say hi to him and I remember this and and and Darren's like well I wish he had said
hi and then he's like he's like I love that impression hi Steve and that was so that's our
our tiny little Darren Detition story but I think in a microcosm for us anyway it goes to show the
kind of character he was and uh there are there are a few few people in this world that you meet
when people are talking behind their back,
they're complimenting them.
And Aaron Titian seemed to be one of those guys.
That's the dude who always brought it.
Yeah.
Every time he was on TV,
you knew you were getting the good stuff and he always brought it.
And it was fabulous to watch.
Yep.
Never had a bad day.
No matter what sport.
Three run Jack.
Oh God.
Love them.
Anyway,
thank you for that.
We have a programming note,
Adam.
What's that?
For the show.
Uh,
the show.
Oh yeah.
Long weekend,
right?
Yes.
Wrong.
Long weekend.
Yeah.
Uh,
no,
Steve,
I thought Steve was flying in his new helicopter over to the Middle East
to collect the rest of his check.
But in actuality, what's happening is Monday is a long weekend.
So we will be doing our streams over the course of the weekend.
But, of course, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday next week will be the STP.
Also, I'm going to be streaming the Eastern Conference final.
It's just not a thing yet.
Okay.
So you're kicking me off the Rangers?
Wow.
Wow.
Yeah.
Well, I'm kidding.
Damn.
You're just taking it all of a sudden
No discussion
You want to chat?
I don't think it was a conversation
Right here is not the time
I thought we had a conversation
I'll just go with my other blue shirts
bros and we'll hang out
in the rangers reddit
We can do more than one
We should have competing teams
