the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wilde and jesse blake
it's west macaulay everybody on the call jesse can you play
it one more time just just want to oh case somebody missed it oh let's all
cheer the referee I like Julian McKenzie's tweet yesterday imagine not
liking west macaulay no julian you're fired you can imagine that huh i i've been over this many
times i don't have a hate on for west macaulay sounds like you do i have a hate on for how
deeply unfunny most of hockey is now that wasn't the only thing he did yesterday oh really yeah
there was uh one of the wacky antics there was two two uh clips that went viral because i saw
bunch of people tweet wait wes did it again oh he did the nhl tweeted it so i'm gonna i'm gonna
pull it up here where there is okay can i save us some time is the clip simply there were two fights
is that it hold on hold on hold on no i don't have the second one damn it okay i don't have
the second one in front of me but anyways what do you do two fights so he did it again yeah he did
it again and it's that he did it again he did it again what is it steve what what's wrong with
wes mccauley why can't why isn't that fun there's no it is fun it is fun but to me i'm like ha ha
ha that's good i'm not discouraging it i would never discourage that i'm not going to discourage
uh more personality and more fun being in the nhl the point i made several years ago this
should have maybe been one of our holiday clips yeah is is west mccauley you know five minutes
fighting or whatever he does a little jab yeah and people are like oh this guy's hilarious and
i'm like is he hilarious or is he sort of funny and the only reason we find him hilarious is
because the nhl is so vacuum just there's no personality in it whatsoever that one official
goes oh fighting and we're just like jesus christ george carlin richard prior west macaulay
that's that's the mount rushmore you put west macaulay twice you're not upset at west macaulay
you're upset that the bar for funny in the nhl or personality is on the floor but jesse it's
beneath the earth's crust right you're upset at the bar and not the person he got commercials
because of that oh he did oh he's in commercials is he which is fun listen i don't know that care
i don't care i don't sound like he cares a little no no i don't hate west mccauley i think i mean i
but you definitely care i have nothing against him i have everything and then all these people
whose opinions i find very valid are like yo this is hilarious and i'm like i'm sitting there like
the grinch like i'm like why can't i enjoy christmas you know what i mean i'm like i wish
i could enjoy this as much as everyone else maybe i'm the problem you know i'm the common denominator
here you know or i'm the exception i suppose to the rule everyone else finds it so funny
aha and i'm just here like yeah cool that's it jesse what are you looking up i was just looking
up commercials for uh west mccauley have you found anything no no i just got a life insurance
commercial but it's ov and uh backstrom i saw it and i don't think west is in that one i want to
say was it like i want to say it was like a razor or something like that it was some kind of
toiletry i think um did kale mccarr end the chicago blackhawks season last night oh he ended what's
his name the poor kirby doc yeah and i and i you know you know it was hilarious i looked at that
whole play by the way if you haven't seen it it's unbelievable it's one of the best goals i've ever
seen but i'm like of course cess jones was on the ice for this oh he's just had a garbage season
And I feel bad for him because he's coming with all these expectations.
The team is clearly underperforming.
And then something that is not even his fault.
And it's like, damn it.
You know what I mean?
Well, you know, it's good to see him and Kael McCarr in a battle of two $9 million defensemen.
You know?
Oh.
You know?
Well, what, Adam?
You can spend the same amount of money on either guy.
Who are you picking?
It's a close call.
I don't know.
Who are you picking?
That's not good.
Who we got?
Who we got?
We got Kel McCarr or Seth Jones.
Who we picking?
Steve, I don't like that.
No.
I don't like that.
That's the same money.
It's the same money for very not the same person.
Wow.
Yeah.
I think I saw somebody added up.
Was it Tyson Berry, Cody CC, and Miko Koskinen, and that equals Conor McDavid?
And Duncan Keith.
Oh, it's Duncan Keith.
It was 13.5 mil, and Conor McDavid is 12.5.
Wow.
Yeah.
By the way, Conor McDavid is out for tonight's game.
Austin Matthews will play tonight.
Yeah, Austin...
So I was unclear about that this morning.
They're saying he had a false positive last week.
He's been negative ever since.
He was on the ice this morning.
So it looks like he's going to play.
Connor McDavid and Derek Ryan are out tonight.
And things are not going really well in Edmonton.
I...
A lot of people...
It's so funny.
Oilers fans are...
It's hot and cold, man.
And it's either they...
Just like the team.
Well, yeah.
and and it's not uh they're they're the oilers fans that listen to this show are never really
disrespectful uh no anymore it got to a point where it was like okay okay okay and i remember
you know i think for a while there i think they felt like we were picking on them because this
organization continues to do the same shit the same shit every year and what we talked about
on the last episode was like, listen,
the question is, does Ken Holland spend resources
like futures to improve this team,
which is underperforming?
Yeah, we're a Leaf fan.
And my point was, if Connor McDavid
and Leon Dreisaitl have earned it,
then the team's earned it because they are the team.
And you see what happens when they're not playing well.
The team falls apart.
They don't have any depth.
Everybody else is a placeholder.
High, you're just here.
You're just stopping through.
it's conor mcdavid and leon dry sidle and um guy guy guy guy guy guy guy all the way down the
lineup and that includes recently nuge who has not been great and i i don't know i don't know
what's going on with edmonton it's great the entire defense is a mess the numbers also support
the theory that it's only mcdavid and dry started because right now the the stat i heard the other
day is that mcdavid and dry style going into the new york game are plus two on the season like when
they're on the ice they're plus two which isn't great that's their goal difference or whatever
But when they're not on the ice, the rest of the team, I believe their goals for 17, goals against 36.
So that's what, minus 16 or whatever, roughly that going into New York.
The number's larger than two.
It's worse after probably that game as well.
It's probably going to be worse coming out of Toronto tonight.
Although it's the Leafs, you know, they might just hand them a victory.
the first liner evan rodriguez own the edmonton oilers and they have for the last 10 games two
years when matthews originally tested positive i was like okay it this only we look forward to
matthews versus mcdavid we look forward to watching that the amount of oilers games matthews
has missed over his career is staggering like the the sheer percentage especially at home
is staggering.
And then, oh, it's a false positive.
Great.
And now McDavid's out.
Yeah.
Have the Leafs lost to the Oilers during the pandemic?
I don't think so.
In their last 10 games,
they've allowed 20 goals against Edmonton.
In how many games?
Last 10, Edmonton's only scored 20 against the Leafs.
Wow.
So it's not good.
And people are going to give me a lot of shit
about my Nugent Hopkins take,
but I just want to break this down for you.
Here's what I'm talking about.
14 of his 26 points have come on the power play.
He has three goals.
He has 26 points,
but 14 of them are on the power play.
Yeah.
Which who do you think are scoring those?
Yeah.
Like it's fine that he scores on the power play,
but it's,
and it's fine that he has 23 assists,
but three goals.
Yeah.
People conflate that.
They're like,
what,
why are you punishing him for scoring on the power play?
It's no,
it's,
he's not scoring on the power play.
Someone else is.
Well,
no,
it's to illustrate.
Well,
sorry,
sorry.
He's generating offense with assists,
but it's to point out.
He's not scoring at even strength.
Yes.
And after the big extension too.
Now, he's shooting, and I feel bad for him.
He's shooting 4.2%.
But all the same, one must – you got to do it.
You got to step up.
Buffalo Sabres era Taylor Hall is like, hey, that's pretty good.
Yeah, watch.
He's going to get a hat trick tonight just because I said that.
Oh, no.
But the mudslinging has started, and it started with Dave Tippett.
And, Jesse, I sent you a link on this one with Dave Tippett's comments
after a recent game um and it's it's sort of funny because um he's talking about miko koskinen
now let's let's take the spotlight off miko koskinen for a second while jesse's queuing up
this clip who's the oiler's other goalie mike smith who's always hurt and and and why is mike
smith always hurt now well he's kind of he's 39 man like so mike smith to me i feel like mike
Smith's not, not always hurt. Mike Smith's just Mike Smith age. Yeah. He's just a 39 year old
playing goalie. The most physically intense position in the sport by far. How many 39 year
olds do you know that can do the splits? Not a ton. Not a ton. How many 39 year olds do you know
that can stand for 60 plus minutes in a row in a crouched position? Yeah. Like think about that's
what being a goalie is. You're standing all the time. That's not an easy position. Of course that
wears on your joints but what are the oilers not standing extremely fast well it's just a really
i'm gonna extremely fastly fall down yeah it's just so much pressure on everything so so the
oilers go and do what they always do and this is where i get oilers fans point bringing it back to
where i started i get what they were saying about what we're saying they're like you guys aren't
watching enough tippet needs to go what they let's be honest here what the oilers have always
needed what they really need now as a goalie right and and they they locked up mike smith to a two-year
contract because they don't have any creativity when it comes to that i'd still say their defense
just straight up isn't it sucks but come on they it's not even that they re-signed mike smith which
is bad but he was good last year you can man look at some of the players who teams have just shot
into the sun and koskinen's not one of them like i don't know man you couldn't find a way out of
that deal it goes back to the creativity thing there's just been no creativity we're okay we're
gonna get i don't know kyle turris gonna get him cheap and we're gonna see how it works oh well
didn't really work okay do you want me to play the clip yeah play the clip this is dave tippett
talking about miko koskinen i thought we did a lot of things well tonight our goaltender wasn't
very good and we didn't find enough pucks at the net to uh to get us back in the game
you there's been talk of starts in this for this team you know they get you know they get a power
play early in the first period they don't score on it but they score about five minutes into the
game then what do you what do you want to do like what do you mean it's a brutal mistake
it's a brutal mistake what are you going to do yeah right call it what it is we're playing well
it's a brutal mistake call it what it is the season frustrations happen the breathing into
the microphone is intense that's it's intense right yeah oh yeah no it's definitely him yeah
that's some asmr dave tippett stuff for you good luck okay um but here's here's here's what i want
to say before we continue okay this fight that we're going to illustrate between koskinen and
tippett which right now as of right now and i'll get to it they're trying to downplay because it's
the last thing the Oilers need right now. This is
squarely Ken Holland's fault.
This is 150,000%
Ken Holland's fault.
He's using Miko
Koskinen's name to
criticize
Ken Holland. Yes, but
the harmony on the team
or the lack thereof
between the coach and one of their
most important players in Koskinen,
this is Ken Holland's fault. Let me run
through some numbers with you. I don't know if we need to play anymore of the
Tippett quote. I think you've got the
concept last last year mike smith played 32 games he started 30 of them out of 56 out of 56 okay
yeah he had 21 wins and six losses that's that's worth another contract man but he's 39 years old
the last time mike smith played over 40 games it was 1819 the last time he played over 50 games it
was 1718 aka austin matthews second season in the league the 1819 makes sense because the 2020
season cut short yeah but what i'm trying to say i guess yeah you're right you're right i think what
i'm trying to illustrate here though we have to remember that all the time it's yeah time but but
all the same you know i want i want to be clear here the the the actual number matters more than
the amount of games in the season what i mean by that is how can you mike smith played really well
in 32 games last year if there had been 82 games and he'd played more than 32 games it would have
been a much larger issue i wonder if it i wonder if that record looks a whole lot different and i
think and the reason for that is he's 39 so so you've brought a guy back who can who can give
you 32 good games you think right and you but this season you're not playing 56 games you're
playing 82 so who's supposed to pick up the other so here let me let me bring it to something else
something that i know you're passionate about negotiations oh so the oilers have a complete
lack of creativity we already know that we've already established that mike smith with that
record and with those numbers goes into last off season with ready ready to negotiate yeah
even though he's 39 look at my numbers and we know the oilers have tried to trade koskinen
it did not work yep we know they tried to acquire Darcy Kemper it did not work so Mike Smith is here
and he goes well well well I know you're not going to give me a ton but you are going to give me two
years and the Oilers go that's ridiculous you're 39 and he goes okay well I'm going to get another
offer somewhere else Brian Elliott just got a contract you think I'm not going to get one
I'm going to go out there and I'm going to get an offer from somewhere else they might even give me
two years and i or you can give me my second i i respect that but if ken holland yeah it does
again it falls back on ken holland oh i could not get it done i agree how can you not how do
you put yourself in that position yeah the they have miko koskinen right now because of a lack
of creativity they have mike smith signed to two years because of a lack of creativity
ken holland's whole thing with last trade deadline was i'm not going to do anything because the last
time i tried and it was really expensive and then we lost well because he went after a player that
he knew and he paid too much and then the season was canceled or not canceled postponed there there
are so many examples of teams doing nothing and it being the right decision right yeah there are a
lot of off seasons where we go in as fans guns blazing and we're like you gotta tear the whole
thing down you gotta just get nuts and go completely different personnel and then they
don't do that they tinker here and there and it ends up being the right choice the edmonton oilers
are a crystal clear example of doing nothing being the absolute wrong choice but they didn't
even really do nothing did they they signed cody cc to big money which hurts their ability to be
creative they didn't need to do that they signed tyson berry to big money which hurts their ability
to be creative i you can make the argument to me that i understand why they did tyson berry
yeah i can you could i can make that 100 get that cody cc i do not understand you know what no i
don't i don't understand why they had to get rid of tyson berry because they they signed tyson
berry what did i say get rid of oh sorry i don't understand their decision to sign tyson berry
and trade ethan bear in yes yes because the problem with their series against the winnipeg
jets is they needed stops they need stops and i don't mean saves i mean because i don't defensive
stop you're talking about shutting people down in the neutral zone yeah i don't remember the
numbers exactly and ethan bear did to be fair have a couple really bad moments in that series
but they made the bet on the wrong guy they had ethan bear you have him they had him at a smaller
number and rather than go okay we're gonna keep him he's now gonna be one of our big offensive
guys we know he can do it on the back end we're gonna keep him at a much lower number we're gonna
punt on tyson berry unfortunately but we're gonna use that cap space on something else
I think you could have kept Tyson Berry
and still found a pretty good goaltender at $4 million.
The $4 million you spent on Cody Ceci.
You could have found an even...
And you didn't need to re-sign Chris Russell either.
Keeping Ethan Bear...
He was actually up.
Keeping Ethan Bear and getting rid of Tyson Berry
probably gets you Kemper.
I don't know how you guys have had this whole little thing
about their defense and not mention Duncan Keith.
Oh, I was getting there.
Well, let's take it there.
Go there.
That was the whole decision on the back end.
You're moving out these guys and you're re-signing everything
and then you're bringing duncan keith to get the stops because they saw in the bubble playoffs they
went up against duncan keith and he stopped them and ken holland wants him now on the team because
he saw what he did to his team and now he's ours and the deal they should have made with chicago
was the mark andre flurry move where it just took one prospect for uh or it's not with chicago with
the golden knights what that chicago did is they just sent one prospect it was uh hacker ryan in
they sent him over to vegas and that was just one deal and that was it and instead the reason they
were able to do that is because they had the space because they had the cap space and instead
edmonton wanted the the big deal from chicago and they spent everything to go get duncan keith and
it was craziness and and um oh where was i going with that i did see the logic in the keith deal
like okay we need a steadying presence we need a guy who is going to see any situation
because he's seen every situation in the national hockey league and he's not going to bat an eye
that is ducking key even with reduced ability if you reduce his role and you just have him there
as that presence i understand it but to calm who darnell nurse all right well he's a younger player
in the league but you trust them enough to give them over nine million dollars yeah youngster
cody cc well no youngster tyson berry well no neither of those players are either of those
things he could have been potentially a good fit for ethan bear you know what i think what do you
this is galaxy brady bouchard as well uh conspiracy has nothing based in anything except my intuition
alone as a gm i think i get a sense of how players are thinking sure and how management
has management makes moves they brought in duncan keith to be a pseudo leader on this team
because the guy who is supposed to lead the team isn't the best at it he's got too many
responsibilities already connor mcdavid has to hey can you will this team through every single
game ever please yeah 82 and then and then 16 wins in the playoffs and the gm recognized that
and said i'm gonna go get the guy with cups to bring him into this organization to try and
straighten it out to try and help the locker room and none of that worked i uh yeah i have a lot of
questions about that but we'll but i've already i've already thrown my questions out there about
duncan keith now let's talk about this oh well um when the decision was made we knew less than we
know now i also don't i didn't think at the time it was good i also did i didn't think at the time
it was necessary no they gave up they gave up a player who plays in the nhl for a guy on that
contract it's crazy what was the deal wasn't it was it was it not ethan bear no ethan bear was
for no it was the other guy it was the i don't remember there's another defenseman um oh no i
don't remember here i have it right here it was duncan keith was traded to the edmonton oilers
by the chicago blackhawks on monday for caleb jones and a conditional pick in the 2022 draft
edmonton also received minor league forward tim soderland heath who turns 38 on friday
this is at the time of the article has two seasons remaining on a 13 year 72 million dollar contract
5.53 million average annual chicago should have paid edmonton to take that off their book
I don't know how that happened.
The full price?
Oh, yeah.
How did that happen?
They didn't retain anything.
It's insane.
Now, let's talk about Mikko Koskinen firing back to Dave Tippett.
This all comes back to Ken Holland, by the way.
And I'm not saying Ken Holland's a bad guy, but this is a not.
This is, all of this is squarely on him.
No, it's not about, it's purely about performance.
So, Mikko Koskinen on critics, on his criticism from Dave Tippett.
And this is to a Finnish reporter.
Who, I'm not going to lie, I'm not going to try to pronounce anything in Finnish.
He's followed by many people I don't trust.
Tommy Sipala, I think is his name.
Sure.
But there's a lot of ex-ante's, and they're not even egu ones, or ex-ante grok.
I think our Finnish listeners are like, you know that?
They understand.
Yeah, you don't have to.
We know.
Yeah, we know who it is.
His name's Tommy.
Tommy from Finland, come on.
Oh, Tommy.
Our buddy Tommy.
Anyway, here's what Mikko Koskinen said in Finnish.
It's not nice being thrown under the bus.
I have to be better, but at the same time,
we've scored seven goals in my last six losses.
I can't score goals.
By the way, Nuge is out tonight, too.
What?
I don't know if he's injured or what the deal is.
COVID, maybe.
I haven't seen anything about protocol, but here's the
top line for Edmonton.
Are you ready? Hyman, McLeod, Puyarvi.
Well, the top line is Dreisaitl.
McLeod?
Whatever line Dreisaitl is.
Fogel, Dreisaitl,
yamamoto yamamoto benson shore cassian perlini scrivore severe severe excuse me tourists and
then you've got nurse bouchard keith cc and then legason and smith is going to start i do like
bouchard oh man bouchard rules i just think i just think it comes down to like this whole
fucking mud slinging thing didn't need to happen right and it's just because what was
his response uh he said and i'll read it one more time it's not nice being thrown under the bus
I have to be better but at the same time we scored seven goals in my last six losses I can't score
goals so now today because of because this was escalating Dave Tippett does what an NHL coach
does which is diffuse the situation in the media talk to the player try to move on and so he said
oh I think that quote was taken out of context I don't think there's a context in which that quote
can't be read the way that you heard it there is like that's one of those quotes where it's like
no matter what context you hear that in um he didn't like being thrown under the bus and the
oilers haven't scored when he's lost he said his goalie was bad like i was that i don't know no
no he's talking about the koskinen oh okay thing i know i know they hockey guys they just try to
handle everything behind closed doors bless them but wouldn't it have meant so much more
to just like why are you lying and treating us like children just apologize if you're sorry
apologize do you want koskinen to apologize no no uh tippet i wonder but well i wonder if
no it's because it's so confusing because so tippet says that koskinen saying that the team
needs to score is taken out of context and no no wait oh did koskinen say that no tippet said
that Koskinen, he thought Koskinen's quote
was taken out of context.
Oh, stop.
Okay, so I misunderstood.
I misunderstood.
Right, right, okay.
I thought it was Tippett saying his quote.
This is the CJ tweet on it, all right?
And I'm like, okay.
CJ, this is CJ.
Dave Tippett thinks his quote, oh, okay.
No, I'm wrong.
Dave Tippett thinks his quote about Mikko Koskinen
the other night was taken out of context.
Points out he was asked by a reporter
about the start of the game
and adds that Koskinen made some good saves later on.
Let me just say this.
Shut up.
Right, so the one we heard
where he says, my goalie was bad.
Do you want to play it again?
No, it's okay.
When he says, my goalie is bad,
he says that's taken out of context.
There's nothing.
Either quote, there's no context in which you need to read them.
They're pretty blunt, both sides.
That's what I was trying to make about Mikko Koskinen's quote.
But yeah, a tippet, same thing.
Apologizing would have meant more.
It's difficult to apologize.
It's especially difficult for men to apologize.
Does he need to do it in public, though?
Yeah.
okay why tell me means more okay well okay well because the other option appears to be lie
and what if he apologized to miko koskinen behind the scenes so well then what is the point of this
i would ask what is the you so you apologize to him behind the scenes for saying something you
very meant and then publicly oh it's just taking out of context why why was it taking out of
content where was the follow-up there taking out of context how here would you like me to read the
quote back to you dave is i'm not afraid of you you're not going to be here much longer so the
quote is blah blah blah blah i'm serious i'm serious like wow what is the uh he lied right
he lied what to what galvanize the team who on the oilers right now was like fucking say your
prayers don't forget like they're no smell insults they're just reading the edmonton journal
they're reading they're reading fucking dave tippett saying oh it's taking out of context
fuck yeah all right all right boys we got a big game in toronto tonight one two three context
and they go out there and they kick everyone's ass or simply apologize what is with us or ken
holland can do the right thing which he won't do here and step up and go this is my fault
which is what it all comes throwing him that's throwing him so much worse under the bus i mean
does that does this situation happen if the Oilers have a good goalie no but that okay that to me is
the truth you don't need to speak you can't have a general manager come out and be like yeah you
know what I got it didn't solve this problem we haven't solved it for six years no wait though I
am I am actually after insulting Dave Tippett I am gonna stick up for him because I heard that
and I was like okay that's really harsh and he shouldn't have said it because I mean at the end
of the day that's his goalie and he's got to face that man in the morning he's not wrong
dude he was bad he was bad and bad to a point where he cost them the game yeah but Koskinen
is also right what if both men are right they're not scoring enough and he's not stopping enough
Koskinen's I think very right in his assessment of the team not scoring goals because they have
oh you can't argue it they have zero wins when after trailing when trailing after the first
period the Edmonton Oilers have not won a game if they are trailing after the first period this
entire season which is funny because the story in that everyone forgets the McDavid well I'm sure
Oilers fans don't forget but the McDavid goal against the Rangers if I'm not mistaken the
oilers were down 5-1 in that game and supposedly as the story goes dry sidle i think it was scored
the 5-2 goal and he said to one of the rangers here we come and they fucking won and they won
in style and that was at a point in the season where we were looking at mcdavid and dry sidle
going holy shit well we still will stopped well and that's the thing that's that's what's been
so interesting about this oilers conversation is um ask us this six weeks ago oh like they're and
and how many 180 point pace and how many edmonton or how many edmonton games have been postponed
because of canada and the health restrictions here i don't know right like they it's not like
they've played that many games since but it's been a really really bad set of games oh the other thing
that was pointed out is so they're what is it eight two and no sorry two eight and two in their
last 12 and an Oilers fan pointed out to me that the two wins they have Dave Tippett was in protocol
that's a coincidence I'm gonna file it under coincidence but I'm also gonna file it under
a thing that people are saying which is I mean people people are mad and people are thinking
irrationally right now and that's one of the mad irrational things that they're saying is that
Dude, it was said about Ducharme in the playoffs.
That's what I was just about to say.
This is Adam Wilde's Jack Ducharme theory of...
Jeff Ducharme.
He's had many names.
Brian Ducharme theory of, hey, when the coach is out, the team's better.
Jeremy Ducharme didn't deserve that.
No, he didn't.
But the team played better when he wasn't coaching.
Hey, half fans, do you disagree now?
Didn't think so.
Thanks for the DMs, though.
Appreciate it.
Okay.
Okay.
they got like six
ECHL players
oh cause the season
started so great
for them
before Omicron
showed up on the
map
no way
no way
they were garbage
but Ducharme
missed like
Shea Weber was
their fucking coach
two games
versus Vegas
and they won
both those games
or something
no Ducharme
during the playoffs
last year
so let me ask you
this
you're Ken Hall
last year
you decided
I'm so rich
despite the
yes
Sorry.
He's a wealthy dude.
Yeah, I like getting into character.
He's on like a five-year, $25 million contract with the Oilers.
Oh, man, that's so many millions.
He's a second-line center in the NHL.
Let's go.
Oh, my God.
So what do you do?
The team played really well, finished second place in the North Division last year.
You did nothing at the trade deadline.
If that team didn't earn a trade deadline pickup, how do you justify this year going after a Ben Sherrod or a Marc-Andre Fleury?
As Elliott Friedman suggested in 32 Thoughts.
Am I right or am I right?
I said this last show.
No, no.
I'm saying he should.
When I saw that, I was like, Frege has this studio bugged.
And if you're Connor McDavid and he doesn't, are you not like, get me the fuck out of here?
well we are in a unique situation this year so supposedly the trade deadline's not moving
oh despite the really suppose i mean that could change along with everything else right yeah uh
that could change along with everything else yeah but the schedule is compact and there's a shit
load of games coming up you have an opportunity to make a move that could justify others because
there's still so much of the schedule left there's like two-thirds of the schedule left
something along those lines yeah we're about 30 35 games there's so much this could be a
hilarious conversation for when the oilers are three rounds deep in the play and then we get
tagged in old takes exposed yeah along with the rest of our show well that too i mean we're yeah
we're dumb but so are you let's take that oh yeah old takes exposed trashing a team that has two
wins in its last 12 games like i don't know man we calls it the way we sees it what what what
are we gonna sit here what what about current takes bad i want that twitter account look at
these idiots defending a team that doesn't win current takes bad run by smart insider man
old takes exposed move down what about current takes bad ctb current takes bad it shows up on
the account two seconds after you tweet it montreal is going to turn it around and make
the playoffs this year bloop it's on current takes bad why don't we have that oh it feels
like we should um oh yeah no they have an opportunity here because there's like two
thirds of the schedule left to make a move that hopefully helps turn things around and then it
could lead to other things okay all right now we've got to bring marissa and gemmy on from the
seattle times um she has been covering the kraken all season long and steve we've been wanting to
have marissa on for the longest time but steve said to jesse and i earlier this week hey we need
to talk about the kraken and we jesse and i were like why and there's a whole bunch of things that
have been bubbling. So if you missed out over the holidays, crack at Twitter. Just explosive
right now. So we'll bring Marissa on in just a second.
bank you're richer than you think and welcoming on marissa and get me for the first time ever and
i can't believe it's only the first time thanks for making time for us today yeah of course so
uh marissa first off we apologize we should have had you on so many eons ago but uh for whatever
reason this is the first time um firstly we were just talking off air and i think we wanted to ask
you because i you know the the thing about seattle and living in seattle and covering the crack and
from what we've heard about seattle is that it rains every day and everybody talks about the rain
has that been an adjustment for you i don't mind it but it's literally every day like it does not
it rains every single day except for the random like snowstorm we got last week oh they don't
plow the roads or do anything and they just hope it goes away and then it did like one day it just
rain and it all went away and i was like oh it worked it was true it was weird because i spent
all week being super critical of like why don't they plow the roads why don't they salt the roads
and the answer for that was to fish um and then it just there was one big um rainstorm like for
a whole day and then the snow was just gone so very weird um but yeah it does rain every single
day unironically and and what i wanted to know is is there like a wild rush when there's a sunny day
like is everyone in seattle just doing everything on those days
time it's sunny out and i wake up i get a text from multiple people that it's sunny out and
like pictures of outside and like my friend sent a selfie of her standing in the sun the other day
yeah people get really excited that the sun is here there was like
a statistic in december that the sun had been out like one or like two full days for the entire
a month or something what um so yeah it's weird i don't mind it because i like gloom and clouds
and rain and stuff so it's great for me but it's very it's very funny i don't mind the rain either
i'm i'm i'm with you i i like i love a sunny day what i wish i could get away from the thing that
gets me is cold and gloomy cold and gloomy i can't do if it's mild and gloomy like in seattle
except for the snowstorm i can i can handle that well you you're like oh yeah i don't mind the rain
which i was like yeah i can get on board with that but you're like no i like the gloom yeah
I like when it's generally
miserable. The sun is out
too much and it's too bright and it gives me a
headache and it's too hot. Now that the sun
comes out twice a month, it's great. Now I get to
see it and then it goes away, so it's perfect.
Vitamin D sales must be just
through the roof on the last gun.
Marissa, the other
thing that you revealed to us in
literally the three seconds we were talking to
you before bringing you on off
air here is that you
live right next door to the
Kraken practice facility?
Yeah, that was on purpose so that when I moved here, I wouldn't have to like do anything but walk outside because when I lived in Boston, that's how it was. I lived right near where the Bruins practice. And I was like, I don't want to change any part of my life except for that. I'm in Seattle now. So I'm just going to go right there, too. So, yeah, that's pretty cool.
That's awesome.
I mean, it must be because that's the thing I think they complain about most in Toronto
is the Leafs practice facility, unless you're in the deep west end, is really, really far
away from where the Leafs actually play.
So a lot of reporters are driving across the city for a morning skate, and then they're
coming back or whatever.
You get to walk out of your house, go across the street, do your thing, and then come back,
which is amazing.
How far is the arena away?
So that's a little further.
So Seattle's really big geographically.
It's gigantic.
So the arena is like six miles away and I don't have a car.
So I go on the light rail to the monorail.
So I get to go to the monorail to every game, which is very fun because it's super touristy.
But it's like unironically how I get to the hockey games.
And it's also funny because the monorail.
So it's like 90 seconds.
They play a little song and it's super cute.
But sometimes before Kraken games, you'll get on and you'll have like Kraken players being like, it's Mark Giordano.
Welcome to the monorail.
And I'll be like, I'm so tired of these guys.
I'm trying to go to my job.
leave me alone for 10 minutes um but it's very funny for a very brief moment i was picturing
mark giordano walking onto the me too you're already on me too hello i'm mark giordano welcome
to the monorail get out yeah this is my monorail please leave that's awesome so marissa one of the
things steve was talking to us about and jesse and i i think missed this maybe maybe it was just me
jesse i apologize i don't want to lump you in with me but there was i thought there was a there was a
a big to-do about the kraken are they good or are they not good and steve can you explain this a
little bit more uh i think it sort of started with uh kevin kurz who covers the sharks basically
talking about like all right so this is a team built by analytics and they're bad so let's talk
about that so marissa why are analytics awful and never work in any place ever
i like kind of tried to write about this yesterday in the most like least passive
aggressive but also i want you to know what i'm being passive aggressive about way possible
okay um so let's not sugarcoat it to kraken aren't good um like that's just the reality
that we live in um analytically they are like fine the reason to crack it i wrote about this
yesterday again the reason a kraken are losing there's like two major things one the goaltending
is on pace for the worst save percentage since in 1996 san jose sharks okay that was before i was
born um so that's really bad um and also and i've like been asking them about this a lot recently
they have given up 10 goals within two minutes of scoring a goal this season which also leaves
the league a lot of responsibles against including their last three games that they lost all on home
ice against the flyers flames and connect so that's pretty bad um and it just really feels
like they don't know how to fix it like talking to them they're legitimately frustrated like they
don't know what's up and you i've watched every single period they've played more than once this
year they should not be as bad as they are like i don't think they would be a playoff team in almost
any scenario but they shouldn't be the fourth worst team in the nhl like at all um that's a
mixture of those problems and goaltending so as far as the analytics thing goes i don't know where
that came from because it just like has nothing to do with anything well no like what if they
just told the goalie like all right get better analytics like just analytic better have they
tried that so i've been trying to get more i've been trying to get more into analytics this year
so i don't want to make me sound really dumb but are there like goalie analytics because i don't
think there are uh there's so the one i've seen as it relates to the kraken is goals saved above
expected so that's the one yeah that's the one it's really bad they tried to invent a war
essentially for goalies and phil grubauer is as i understand it like more than twice as bad as the
second worst guy yeah it was like 28.9 more goals allowed than expected as like a team and grubauer
plays like 90 of their games so that's not good so it's really weird to me when people are like
oh they're bad because they hired analytics people and not because like they're allowing
double as many goals as they're supposed to be so i i'm just looking this up because now you've
brought it up here um the the 1995-96 san jose sharks had an 869 save percentage as a team and
You're saying the Kraken are the worst since that.
By the way, the goalies for San Jose that season.
On pace to be.
So we'll see at the end of the year.
Maybe Grubauer just figures it out.
I think that's kind of like what the plan is right now is hoping that happens.
Wade Flaherty had a, for that season, and this is again before Marissa was born, which makes me feel really old,
he had a 485 goals against average.
Oh, what?
Archer's Irby, who went on to be pretty damn good, 459 goals against average.
Jeff Sargent, one of the other goalies, 492 goals against average.
And the best goals against average on the team is a name that you might remember, Chris Terreri.
Oh, yeah.
He started the majority of the games.
He went 13-29-1.
He had 370 goals against average.
Oh, my God.
So they were allowing at least four goals basically every single night.
Yeah.
So what it came down to in the argument on Twitter.com when all this was happening was kind of the construction of the team.
People were blaming Ron Francis for not picking the right guys, for people leaning too heavy
on analytics and all that.
And then what I saw, the quote, smart responses to those were the GMs around the league got
better this time.
It wasn't the Vegas draft where teams got fleeced.
Teams knew what to do in terms in this expansion draft, and there just weren't the good players
available.
Did you find that in your work that that was the case for Seattle?
They just didn't have a good core to pick from?
yeah i mean i think that i mean hindsight's always 2020 but i think we felt this way at
the time too there were some confusing things done at the expansion draft like there's no way
around that but at the same time yeah 100 this was not as easy as it was for vegas they didn't
have the same opportunities to make the same moves gms were smarter they'd been through the process
before so it just was different um but then like you look at the construction of the team too like
grubauer was not in the expansion draft jayden schwartz was not in the expansion draft um the
way they built um it's not only that and i mean there are some question marks like taking carson
twerensky like i i don't know what happened there um taking some guy from columbus who then they
never attempted to sign like i i legitimately yeah i legitimately don't know why that happened
um like there's no answer for that so there's a lot of questions and it's i mean you look at
the vegas expansion draft too though and there's a lot of names on there where you're like who is
this guy um so and then they just like made a bunch of trades and i don't think the kraken had
the opportunity to do that and i think that's part of it um i am very interested to see how
they address this roster in the offseason because they've made very few trades like ever like they
traded tyler pitlick who they drafted to calgary and they traded vidic vanacek back to washington
when they signed grubauer um they have a bunch of free agents including a lot of rfas how do
they handle the trade deadline historically ron francis teams do that a little bit more than in
the season um what does the offseason look like covid still exists um that's going to be the most
interesting part of how they adjust to this because yeah their building's pretty weird but
it's also again not as bad as the product on the ice is not as bad as anyone expected it like
everyone is legitimately surprised this is what's happening well and steve you made a good point
when we were talking about it philip grubauer was nominated for the vesna last year so that's a guy
that you bet on and i would imagine he's a comeback year next year it's the weirdest like
vesna class ever like one was the guy who won it was traded for nothing uh guy who's a runner-up
was uh is currently the worst goalie in the nhl yeah like it it doesn't seem to make no no no
you're forgetting the guy who should have won it and then went on to win the stanley cup
now no marissa one of the things that drove me nuts about the way seattle handled the expansion
draft was the ask for the first and the third round pick uh to to pick a different player
essentially to give you an extra slot they got zero bites on that nobody took that offer and
my argument at the time was and this could just be my my luddite brain so so please feel free to
tell me you're wrong and you're stupid but what it looked like to me was hey um the price was too
high nobody paid it you want at least one or two teams to pay that because you want to walk away
with the picks now steve's argument to that was they'll get it all back at the trade deadline
anyway with all these free agents they have what's your thought on the way they handled
the the drafting end of this um and then how it plays into the trade deadline because you
just brought it up how will they handle that yeah in retrospect they probably um they probably
should have taken something you would think but i think the philosophy was they intended to
legitimately contend at least a little bit like i think the philosophy was they wanted to be good
this year there's kind of this whole like aura around here of the kraken have to be good and
have that fan base established before the supersonics come back someday because then
that's going to get lost in the abyss a little bit so there's kind of this like unspoken pressure
to compete in the immediate um so they don't really want to admit that it's not going well
uh they want to turn it around the best way they can so i don't think we're going to ever see like
this full like admittance of like we need to rebuild like right off the bat or anything like
that trade deadline is going to be interesting because we have no idea how many games are played
between now and then yeah um we don't know what it's going to look like like who's going to contend
um the kraken have played like three games in the last like 17 days or something crazy and
one of them was like a back-to-back um so even like if they do solve some things they do start
to get better like they don't really have the opportunity to do that in a game right now as
much and i know that's been a frustration for them too so we don't know like how they're going
to be by then we don't know where other teams are going to be at who's going to shut down does
canada still exist by then like we don't know what's going to happen between now and then
um i think like on the table right now you look at someone like mark giordano who they named a
captain so i think there's going to be a lot of reluctance there but he's someone who obviously
they could get a return for as a rental they have a lot of rental guys they have a lot of rfa guys i
think they're like i don't think they're going to want to go trade like jared mccann who's becoming
a franchise player for them you know but some marissa you know i forgot about that oh did you
because i didn't yeah i bet you did i bet you did oh man that but that rankles me that really
bothers me that was a that was painful but yeah he's been great continue please continue you were
on a roll um i wonder if they would move a guy like hayden flurry who just like doesn't play
unless they absolutely have to for some reason which has kind of been like a very weird energy
around that whole thing like all of a sudden Will Borgen has superseded him in the lineup
and Fleury's an RFA and I think he's a little frustrated so I wouldn't be surprised if he's
a guy they look at they have like a glut of defensemen they could move and get some value for
so I wouldn't be surprised if they're pretty active there but it'll be interesting to see
like which pieces they move because some guys you traded it's an admittance of this season
isn't going anywhere right and I think they want to avoid as much of that as possible at the same
time i had a couple questions that selfishly relate to toronto so obviously a lot of fans
were upset about the whole jared mccann thing um can't imagine why you just refer to him as
a potential franchise player but um we were very confused about that whole thing was he
he confused yeah like was he like how did i end up here why did a team
trade for me and then release me to the expansion draft
that like before the season started a little bit and he was he's been moved around a lot
like between Vancouver Florida so he's like used to it a little bit um I think he understood that
the reason Toronto was trading for him was like as a shield for whoever they wanted I think was
like I forget who they were trying to protect her foot yeah maybe yeah so I I in my expansion
preview before the mccann trade i had picked paul as a guy they were gonna take and then when it
was mccann it was like very obviously like oh yeah it's gonna be him um it's funny because i feel
like it's very on brand toronto to like and i'm saying this with like all the love in my heart
to like center the maple leaves in the jared mccann conversation
i feel like the penguins have more to be upset about because they like made this choice
um like i think i think a lot about like man what did the penguins think right now because if i were
them i'd be a little upset um or if i were a penguins fan i would be a little upset but yeah
i guess like the maple leafs also could have just been like let's take him but i don't think they
intended to keep him like at any point at all unless i had that wrong like i don't think they
intended to keep him no well the dialogue here has been um the penguins don't miss jared mccann
as much because evan rodriguez has been such a revelation and oh wait he was elite too that they
just acquired from the penguins and let go for nothing for nothing so like they didn't even
tender him that was driving me nuts but anyway the other toronto related question i had someone
who like mccann we didn't get a chance to know dave hackstall was the assistant coach for a while
and he's been thrust into this uh head coaching role which all the adam did talk talk about the
Flyers fans who reached out to you so Marissa
when we oh the Flyers fans love
to talk about this oh they do so you've
seen that too so that yeah I get a lot
of emails from I get emails from
Kraken fans more than anyone and then a close
second is Flyers fans is it because of
Hackstall yeah they have a lot of
feelings they do so so here's what
I'll tell you what they said to me and then I want you to
take this because when he was hired as
an assistant coach admittedly
based on how I saw things from you know
a thousand feet away in Philadelphia
it hadn't gone well it really didn't go well
And then, you know, Dubas, who's a relatively smart guy, brought him in to be an assistant coach.
And I guess that went fine, but we didn't really hear much from him when he was here.
It was a surprise to me, given how it went in Philadelphia, that he was hired as the coach at all.
Because it seemed like a couple, like sometimes it's like, well, you know, it doesn't go well.
And then you spend five or six years in as assistant and you get another shot.
He spent like two years and then it was back in.
Marissa, what's been your impression, I guess, based on Steve's question?
And what have you heard from Flyers fans?
Because they were all over us in the DMs going, good luck with that guy.
He sucks.
In typical Philly blunt fashion.
I've never heard from a Philly fan who was, like, having a good time, period.
So, like, it's not that surprising that they're upset.
I remember specifically after the first game against the Golden Knights, which was another game, the first of many,
where the kraken like came back they tied it and then allowed a goal like immediately after
um and i was just like tweeting like my feelings of the game of like oh they take a lot of shots
from the point that don't get through or oh their transition like is not ideal and that's when the
flyers fans were like see we told you and i had to be like i have not read any of your emails
um like maybe i don't know um as far as impressions like it's such a weird year it's
hard to get a total read of like anyone or anything like it's an expansion year team
nobody like they're all getting used to playing with each other they all like have had covid
um everything's super weird all the time he has what he has to work with which as we talked about
like after expansion like math i don't know um so it's hard to get an impression i think that
a lot of kraken fans have been very willing to jump onto the anti-dave haxtell bandwagon like
very quickly because it's very easy to do that um i don't think they're going to make a change
there anytime soon because then if that happens they have to now start analyzing like okay well
what about how they built a roster like if it's not his fault that they're still bad so i don't
think that's gonna happen within this year or maybe even next year i think he has a very long
leash um i think it's different than when he came into philly because that was a team that was
already like pretty good and if you go back and look at the dave haxtell flyers they weren't even
like that bad um i can see a lot of the complaints that flyers fans had about him like i can
understand a lot of the mechanisms they have complaints about but at the same time this
roster is not as good as those flyers rosters so there does have to be a little more patience
with everyone involved compared to those flyers teams where they were just better teams and the
results were disappointing he just loves teams with historically bad goaltending yeah maybe that's
yeah i mean the flyers are historically bad in goaltend no matter who's coaching the crack in
all three months of it it's been quite can i can i ask you uh just a more of a personal question
are you enjoying it like seattle yeah it's wonderful like are you enjoying it i love it
here because it's i've moved across the country before it can be tough and and like it's very
dramatic um i didn't really think much of it like i got the job and i was like great okay that's
what i will do now and then i just did it and then after like a few months i was like oh that
was like heavy that was like really intense I just like moved from the only place I've ever
known my whole life and now I'm in a different time zone and I don't know anyone and there's
also a new hockey team everyone's paying attention and I have to tell everyone about it um but it's
really fun I really like it I love where I live um I made a lot of friends here the newspaper I
work for is tremendous the team is fun to be around I can't wait to get access back in person
And that will be like the funnest thing of all time.
We had it earlier on in the year, like a little bit.
And it was great.
And then it was like, well, that was fun while it lasted.
So maybe someday we'll get back to real hockey reporting.
What is the biggest difference between...
I know it's Bostonians, but I don't know what the Seattle citizen name would be.
Seattleans?
I don't know what...
Seattleites.
Seattleites.
Okay.
So there you go.
It sounds funny.
It's a word.
It's a real word.
So what, what would you say is the, like some of the biggest like cultural differences city
to city that you've noticed?
Well, they can't handle the snow.
No, clearly not.
Like at all.
It blew my mind.
Like they didn't, again, they didn't shovel the sidewalks and it would freeze over.
And it was like, how am I supposed to walk anywhere?
Um, what other differences?
They recycle a lot more here.
Um, a lot more of like that type of stuff.
um they're also just like okay being from boston i am kind of used to people just being mean for
fun like you hold the door and then the person like lairs at you like you killed their dog and
you're like okay well this today's the day that ends and why that's fine we're here you can just
like they're just so nice and they don't have to be um like people talk about like the seattle
freeze or whatever i i've not experienced that like most of people i've heard talk have you guys
heard of what that is the northwest freeze yeah yeah no okay so there's like this idea that people
are just like very cold or mean in seattle i don't know every single person i have heard say that has
been a man complaining about not being able to pick up women on the street um so i think that
it's like that's what i think it is um because everyone's been genuinely very pleasant um one
time like when the kraken were in the middle of their six game losing streak that was really bad
earlier in this year i tweeted like is everyone like really worried right now like what's the
panic meter at and everyone was like i'm just happy to be here and it just like blew my mind
i was like no one's upset people are a little more upset now yeah um early on i was like man
if this were the bruins people would want to fold the franchise um and also like you look at the way
the bruins fans handle like tuka rask or whatever kraken fans are so nice to grubauer in comparison
And, like, Tuka Rask is legitimately very good every year, and they hate him.
So it's very bizarre to go from that to this.
Like, it's very weird.
Go ahead, Jesse.
Can you rank Seattle fandom for us?
So of the teams I want you to put in the list.
Oh, gotcha. Okay.
It's the Kraken, the Canucks, the Mariners, Seahawks, and then the next basketball team.
So those five teams.
New Sonics.
who's who's the head like who's leading the way number one is the new sonics um you can't go a
day without hearing about it and i genuinely feel i hope they get the sonics back like i hope that
works out for them um then the seahawks just because football dominates um the mariners have
not made the playoffs in 20 years but if they ever did i think they would declare it a holiday like
they almost made the playoffs this year and it was that was like the story everywhere like everyone
like lost their mind about the mariners i think mariners fans like really badly want to be super
into it so number three would be mariners and then kraken but like the kraken are like a movement i
don't know how to describe it like there's a lot of people here who have watched like two hockey
games ever and like that'll be it but i cannot go to the grocery store downtown anywhere without
seeing kraken merch like people love the brand they love the new team they love being in on it
like the kraken are everywhere like you can't go to a sports bar without seeing like a flag for it
like you it's unavoidable the kraken are every single place in seattle like the monorail has
like kraken logos on it now um it's everywhere so i feel like if they were good if they became
like a playoff contender people would lose their mind about that the the biggest kraken story up
here i think happened last week um with the nadia papavici thing what what was uh your angle on that
what was uh what was that like from seattle because we really only got the canucks perspective
yeah no people thought it was really cool there was a lot of like oh kraken fans are the best
fans in the league type of talk obviously um but like i wrote about it um our fans they cure cancer
true literally true yeah my story on it like took off like really a lot more than i expected it to
because i like skipped morning skate to work on that instead and then it just like took off and
I was like, all right, that's pretty cool.
We used it on my morning radio show here in Toronto, by the way.
Just wanted to let you know that.
Very cool.
Yeah, 100%.
It was great.
It's a great story.
It was fun because I woke up and a lot of people were tweeting at me, which is normal.
But there was a lot of people tweeting at me about the Canucks.
And I'm like, why is that happening?
And it turned out to be like that.
And I was like, OK, so I guess I should write about this.
And then I found her on Facebook pretty immediately.
So that was pretty cool.
But yeah, no, it was really cool idea, Rita.
because i was there when they like mentioned they were going to donate ten thousand dollars to her
and i got a tip like 10 minutes before of like watch out this might happen like for a story keep
an eye on i was like okay i'll look at it after the game and then they announced it during the
game i was like well the tip was right so that's nice um but it was really cool to see that like
in person and like very emotional very fun yeah that's pretty neat i uh i have family in washington
State, Marissa, and they are ardent Mariners fans. And I remember they came to Toronto and
the Mariners were in town, so we took them to a game. And for whatever reason, the Jays were
horrendous that year, but that was the day that they were going to blow the Mariners out because
that happens in baseball. And my uncle got very, very, very quiet. It was a big deal that they
were there seeing the Mariners in Toronto and they desperately wanted them to win.
There's an odd passion with teams that underperform sometimes. I would liken it to
Leaf fans you know Seattle oh yeah you talked about this yeah Mariners are just the Mariner
fans are they are a different breed and a lot of them are Canadian too I guess they all come down
and and uh and hang out from Vancouver and that sort of thing too so anyway uh Marissa one more
one more thing about um about the NHL while we have you obviously there's been a lot of
postponements have you heard anything about um schedule changes itself like you know is anything
filtered down to you where you think well the season might be extended or they're not going
be able to fit all these games in yet what have you heard on that front if anyone knows anything
i hope they email me so i know what i'm doing like day to day how much vacation am i gonna have
this summer i just like want to know when i can go to games like we had every cracking game
postponed this week we're supposed to see the islanders last night ottawa tomorrow night
winnipeg uh go to winnipeg on uh saturday or sunday or whatever none of that's happening
so i'm like okay when do i get to watch the seattle crack it again i'm supposed to go to
dallas next week and i'm like okay i'm not banking on that um so who knows i know the crack can have
a climate pledge open for most of february so i'm assuming they're gonna get a bunch of home
games right then i thought it was interesting yesterday seeing the islanders maple leafs like
schedule flip i wonder if we're gonna see more stuff like that like that kind of like
something off my brain of like oh yeah there's the answer just do that um so i think we're gonna
see some stuff like that and then i don't know i saw like bill daly talking somewhere about how
like they don't have much runway left and that seems very true to me because it feels like they've
canceled half the season already so um hopefully there are games and it's fine and that happens
soon because i would like to do my job fair enough and you do a great job marissa and gemmy
seattle times uh and so great to have you on you were absolutely hysterical so this was so much fun
let's do it again really soon yeah thank you hear that it's your money calling
it wants a promotion elevate your savings with the scotia high interest savings account
always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest
conditions apply visit scotiabank.com slash hisa to learn more scotia bank you're richer than you
think um you know what i just stupidly and jesse prompted me right after our interview with marissa
ended uh alan talked about this last night on agent provocateur and i completely spaced on it
because we just recorded it last night doug armstrong uh joined us for st louis blues general
manager and it's funny because people were like oh you you played it up like it was some big crazy
name and it's just doug armstrong and if and the funny thing is yeah it's just a stanley cup winning
general manager who was the assistant gm in dallas when they won and you know whatever but also if
you've seen doug armstrong in a press conference he might say three words and he talked to us for
the better part of an hour and his stories are amazing there's like this one great story about
bobby clark and him and he was that was the guy he was working for at the time right and bobby clark
like and and doug armstrong's in his mid-20s at this point bobby clark said hey i'm going away
for the summer you can have my house and my here's the keys to my porsche what yeah he just
house sat for him okay yeah oh no there's there's great stories his dad was a linesman for like 40
years in the nhl what kind of ferris bueller shit i know it's crazy it's crazy so really great
episode for that but we were talking alan and i were talking off the top about um about the
postponements and and that sort of thing and alan was talking about covid and it affected his family
of the holidays i won't wreck the whole thing but one thing he did say jesse was this and you go
ahead and play the clip do they have the the runway to make up those postponements do you
shorten the season like what do they do the runway right now is the three-week break and i think most
teams are going to be playing right through it to make up the games that have already been postponed
the sticky part of all this is going to be if we keep postponing games once we get if we do over
around 110. We're at 92 right now, over 110 postponed games. It will no longer be possible
to fit all those games into that three-week break. And we're going to have to look at pushing the
season back. Last year, the Stanley Cup was awarded, I believe it was July 15th. I think
the league is, they don't want to do that again. And they want to stay as much as possible to the
traditional hockey calendar but we may have to be in a situation where we go 10 days two weeks
maybe even three weeks into what is normally considered the offseason to get in 82 games
and a full playoff no told you no no no we're gonna have a stanley cup in late july this year
and it's gonna be a short summer again we're in this for a couple years boys
short summer short summer short summer
I've it was funny last year you know the
year before we only got like five months
out of 12 that was actual hockey that's
that's about what we got in 2021 we were
blessed we got 10 months out of 12 had
hockey yeah so good mercy was so good
but I think this year I think this year
it's gonna be 10 months out of 12 again
I think we're I think we're barreling
towards and i think we're it's going to be a short off season why are you guys saying this like it's
a bad thing i don't mind it i like working and non-stop and having no vacay you get lots of
hockey it's good for me i like it it's good for business it's great for business i like hockey so
much i i wrap my whole life around it and i do not want to watch fucking hockey in july no what
do you want to do in july fuck you do not that anything else what the fuck am i doing fuck you
I'm going to stare at the sun
for more than two days out of three months
like people in Seattle.
Like, hey, I'm sorry.
Hey guys, it's sunny.
The visual of her friend
posting a selfie.
I'm in the sun.
Oh my God, that's funny.
Imagine people's Insta stories when it's sunny in Seattle.
Just hanging in the sun.
It's like us when the leaves change.
Oh man.
Foliage.
the next time shannon's on we should ask him about vancouver and if it's the same attitude
yeah oh interesting well he's in the ford i wonder if that's different abbotsford isn't he
yeah he's a little i guess that's a little lower so it'd be even closer every time i've gone to
vancouver perfectly sunny me too me too yeah i went to the most beautiful flippin wedding
on the water in vancouver and i'm like what is everybody talking about the rain here i was there
for three days and it was boiling hot and gorgeous i ended up walking to the draft which was a
mistake and i was i was just drenched by the time i got there because i'm like this is vancouver at
all i'm freaking dying other than it being depressingly expensive which we're used to
here in toronto yeah i'm i i don't know how you can have anything to complain about living in
vancouver no the price of housing i just said that no other than that other than that i think
it's the best it might be the best place hunter because you get all four seasons real and you can
and you get the mountains and you've got these like when i went to i remember the last time i
was in seattle um i went to a restaurant and it was like a rooftop restaurant super romantic
and you just look over this gigantic vista of the of the ocean and these mountains that go
into like these big hills that go into the ocean and vancouver's the same it's amazing what a
beautiful place to live why do we live anywhere else why do we i got i got something else floods
is there floods in vancouver oh yes yes there are stupid um yeah anyway another thing time zone
i liked living out west i loved having a leaf game start at like five or six o'clock at night
yeah maybe you're right you could watch you could watch that and then you could watch the second
game and then you go out and party at like 11 when i was in my mid-20s it was the best it seems like
the best it's the best thomas drance had a take on that because he's done both he lived in vancouver
and he's lived in toronto and he says florida too right uh yes because he worked for the panthers
he said uh he prefers the west coast i believe or no was it the east fuck i don't remember because
i prefer the west he had to take i just can't remember it shit you ever get halfway through
a story and you're like wait a second i don't know no i'm not sure i think i would prefer the
west so anyway i was doing so well long story show uh here's an idea for a great guest jesse
kale mccarr we brought a kale mccarr oh yeah only to ignore ignore kale mccarr there was something
you wanted to talk about with the school 30 seconds on it i was like we gotta do it just
i'm sorry about that so first of all i have two questions um one what's better mccarr mcdavid
or um why does his name escape me zegras i was gonna say milano but yeah everybody calls the
even though it was a zegras assist uh the milano goal which one are you picking
oh i i still think macar is third but it's there's a very clear podium now like yeah yeah
it's it's you can you can say it's milano you can say it's mcdavid for the top slot
uh i'll hear an argument for both and to me macar is bang like he's right in the bronze
medal slot there i think i think it's got me it's got to be zegras milano because it's two
two players it's executing it it's harder yeah it's also the most innovative goal we've seen
it's a i hate to i don't want to overblow up it's it's almost like it's a game changer it's
generational it's we haven't seen anything like that i still haven't we have not i still think
like i don't we talked a lot about the svechnikov michigan goal when it happened in the first one
in NHL history I don't think we gave proper kudos to how innovative it was because it opened
Pandora's box like if that goal doesn't happen I don't know if this one does the there was a
compilation of goofy shit Trevor Zegers has tried that didn't work but it's gonna work at some point
yes this kid he's got potential to be revered by the end of his career the way an entire generation
revered Pavel Datsyuk yeah and yeah it oh it's just my brain's farting here oh it's Troy Terry
that's got 21 right 21 goals goals uh I know he's having a monster season I believe you I think he's
third in the league or something too that's the Ducks are all of a sudden this the most exciting
team to watch it's like holy look at all this talent two of the most disrespected players in
the entire league in terms of performance versus how much they're being talked about is Troy Terry
and Nazem Kadri Nazem Kadri has as many points per game as Leon Dreissel right now you you know
that because uh producer Drew tweeted that out and he's been did he tweet that yes I didn't actually
know that oh okay no well hey sorry he just texts me about it every fucking day yeah he's been
hammering that point home and he won't let anybody not know it I mean it's unreal it's unreal on a
team with killer killer killer killer it's Kadri who's leading the way like it's unbelievable
They're, what, fifth highest paid forward?
Right.
So McDavid slots in at second, I guess, the four-on-one goal.
Oh, man.
That one's so impressive, though.
I flip-flop.
I don't know which one.
Between that and McCarr, yeah.
Also, does McCarr lose style points because it was that three-on-three?
McDavid did that five-on-five.
I don't know.
I'm just trying to rank them.
Difficulty, maybe?
It definitely puts him in a position where he can't beat McDavid.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Yeah.
yeah i get that i think that's yeah it has to be a third place but okay but the ziegers milano goal
was it was like an iso it could have happened five on five or three you said it earlier who
was the guy he was one-on-one against uh kirby dock kirby dock kirby dock never forgets that
right oh ever yeah what's that it's such a bad as a bad example dave remember dane cook when he was
at his height and he had that joke about if you go up and you smash it smash a kid's ice cream
into into their face you remember me forever you'll never forget that that's how it looked
at me it's like you will he'll never forget that as long as he lives there was there was a quote
in toronto that i thought was very funny because they talked about how the oilers are struggling
and mcdavid had not been put on protocol yet but they're talking about oh yeah the oilers are
coming to town is there a chance you you you know you maybe take them lightly or whatever and i'm
like you asked morgan riley that question if any leaf is never going to take the oilers uh for
granted ever again it's morgan riley because connor mcdavid put him out of the lineup for a
month he was no i'm gonna play through the pain and in one fell swoop i am no longer playing
through the pain connor mcdavid proved that i cannot do my fucking job and i am going to take
a seat shall we do the press conference so there's two things there i wanted to ask you guys about
the cargo so yeah the where you're ranking and the second thing is i wanted to create something
new for uh the listeners i wanted to create the uh max kellerman memorial worst take award for
our listeners so whenever anything great happens i want you to tag us in the tweet where there's
the person usually some dude with sunglasses on takes the other side on the on whatever great
things happen and tag us in that tweet and we may read it out just the the um uh what is it
the what are they not anti-hero but there's like a it's a very lazy way to do things where you're
literally always the opposite you're uh there's a word for that you know what i'm talking about
right contrarian contrarian yeah yeah so i've pulled some of the i went through twitter and
i looked at all the replies on the uh video of the macar goal and i pulled out some tweets of people
who aren't just like oh my god that's amazing would this make current takes bad it wouldn't
make current takes bad okay all right so i'm gonna read these to you guys and uh let me know
when you want me to stop so we got we got this tweet it was a nice goal and i know the league
is trying to build around these young talented kids but i don't think that goal was worth the
hype it's getting personally who said this it's an overtime winner regardless who which oakley
sunglass wearing person i'm not gonna read out their handle oh okay no they're not like a they're
not like a writer no no these are just replies to the tweet to the video of the tweet another one
nice but all i can notice are fans in the arena wake up canada so that's using the macar goal as
a platform to call out no fans in the seats in canada yeah that's what i'm focusing on more like
covid makar you know another another no he's no that guy was he's got a point you know another
tweet hughes still better no no that's absolutely not better that's not no that's why is that a
question that's done that's just we're finished with that okay unfortunately what old takes
current here we are bad takes current takes bad current takes bad that's it looks like an
interference on mckinnon to me so that that this person was upset that kawaii travel too shut up
that mckinnon might have had an interference before all this happened um and to think devin
taves has probably has arguably been the more consistently solid defenseman for the abs this
season see that's meant to be a compliment but it's so bad it does it does the opposite i always
love and to think when they start you never know you know that a tweet's going south when and to
think is the third three starting words there are so many tweets where i'm like that's how you talk
yeah like that you talk like a dragon ball z villain and to think and to think i once feared
you kakarot i have two more here uh this was another shouldn't have happened refs should
have called interference there was another interference one and uh last one this person
just excellent tweeting already better than austin matthews there it is there it is ah
noted defenseman and center uh completely comparable no no based on beast so i i'm
calling it the max kellerman bad take uh tweeter award but we can also do the what is it no no
they can be two separate things they can be two separate no i think gun to the earth should be
the name of the segment because that's what that's what he says gun to the earth who's gone
the alien who's pointing a handgun at the earth well and they have a gun yeah they have a laser
beam that's gonna destroy earth and a handgun laser beam and they're pointing it at the earth
andre igudala have you seen don't look up yeah it's like if don't look up was about an earthquake
and they got that actor to just shoot this final stand is to shoot the yeah ron perlman just
shooting the ground you son of a bitch all right so yeah if there's ever spectacular moments and
you see somebody on twitter take the other side please let us know oh i love the other side no
okay with just the response jesse please consider that's it just the link to the tweet and jesse
please consider and to think and maybe it shouldn't be please consider it should be and to
think let's do the press conference the steve dangle press conference and to think a press
conference steve what are you looking at me texting producer drew and i are talking about
how good hat picks are and how to make it even better good we forgot a couple plays and the
comments let us know thank you we touched on this about uh i don't know before christmas i guess
is when this was in the news but yesterday uh the city of calgary and uh the calgary flames
officially announced that the arena deal is off and everybody is upset uh do you guys have any
thoughts on this than the news the new news yeah big murray edwards guy let's yeah and you know
it's funny uh they're let's go billionaires the premier who is a dipshit um uh came out and said
today that it's the city's fault yeah if you didn't know which side you're on um jason kenney's
on murray edwards side so you're on the city's yeah so like it's it's just you know what it is
politics aside it's just a fucking shame for flames fans yeah they deserve a better arena
than this this is the one of the most well-attended franchises in the league consistently
consistently one of the franchises that you can rely on for steady attendance steady success
like there's and they're a good team this year and they're a great team and i don't understand
i don't understand why what's that that should be the story yeah but as always uh calgary and
its management group sorry the flames that is love they love to get involved in local politics
can you imagine if mlse mlse here got involved as publicly as the flames do it's insane they've
been doing this for years yeah no and they tried to not get the old mayor elected and failed and
they tried to not get this one elected and they failed and so now they're doing some stuff and
dicking around regular people yep anyway it's it's such a shame and you know what i don't think
that that um calgarians should have to pay for this i just don't think that that's fair like why
so you're so i'm paying i'm paying you tax and paying for this event center so that you can make
a pile of profit off of it i how does it make sense so i'm i'm sure there is some dishonesty
from both sides sure i had a tweet yesterday about this is over 9.7 million which is how the mayor
framed it in a tweet which would be 1.5 percent of the cost something like or roughly i think
it'd be just under 1.5 percent of the cost is there anything else like i'm missing really no
no oh okay because what i said was like the flames paid troy brower nine million dollars to play for
them and an additional six million dollars do not play for them so like that's the kind of money
that we're talking about canceled this deal it's 9.7 million dollars and just for just for context
of the whole story from the cbc so yeah as of january 1 the deal is terminated construction
was supposed to begin uh early this year and then because of the amendment that was put in place
in the summer of 2019,
there was supposed to be an additional
$16.1 million to build the arena.
There was going to be some solar panels
that needed to be put in a sidewalk.
And the city asked Calgary to contribute
$9.7 million to the additional $16.1 million.
The city asked the Flames.
Yeah, the Flames, sorry.
For $9 million of the $16 million.
For $9.7 million, and the Flames said no,
and then now they terminate the deal as of January 1.
Terrible.
9.7.
No, but I'm going to get on Twitter
and I'm going to lick Murray Edwards' boots
like they're a jawbreaker.
I'm going to get right to the center.
I want that gumball.
Okay.
What a real bummer.
They deserve a better arena there.
They're going to get one.
Adam, this question comes from ClearlyARussianBot
on our Discord.
Cool.
My favorite.
if you're not a member of our discord head to sdpn.ca find the link that says join us on
discord and join us on discord um they're asking where does the term checkered past come from
and why does it mean bad is there some context to the term checkered past that
there's interesting history around i've never heard that okay i don't know um i i i i can
look it up uh i don't know checkered pack there's a bunch of sayings out there that um have like
fascinating beginnings and i actually was going to bring one to the show the other day because i
um like i i think that um i think that the term uh pirate is like based on food that people used
to make like a dried out food that people used to make on the caribbean islands when they lived in
like the woods and they would there's some sort of buccaneer or something like that there's some
sort of weird thing there um there's a lot of like weird sayings that we have and people
say them and they have no idea where they come from like no no clue um but yeah checkered past
i don't know let's ask the next question and i'll look it up okay sure um well this one was going to
be a little deeper conversation because uh bim jenning asked us hey bim to on our discord comment
to comment on the uh list of players that team canada is considering for the olympics now the
nhl are moved out it was a list tweeted out by scott wheeler that i'm going to bring up in a half
a second because they only uh have half of the tweets so i just want all of the names here
if somebody could vamp um for me well yeah sure sorry for the uh to for uh you know where sayings
come from and everything one uh i find causes a lot of issues i don't know if you watched a lot
of bugs bunny growing up but like those vhs's were prevalent in the house just because i don't know
for some reason we had them and i don't know i just thought they were from bugs bunny and then
i got older and i'm like you can not say anything from bug funny anything ever wow so then they made
space oh yeah we thought it was good again let's do checkered past and then we'll check out wheeler's
list late 14th century is when the check would pass comes from wow uh marked with squares or
checks uh basically it was from what i understand here at least according to this uh online epi or
a etymology dictionary um it means that you so it's been used for six seven hundred years and
it was basically that you had both good and bad right you had you know black and white essentially
because checkerboards are black and white i was i didn't want to sound like a child by saying is it
like a checkered board but it is oh clearly it is oh okay but it's sort of like you know he comes
like you know he's he's got some skeletons in the closet another way of saying he had a checkered
pass he had some some bad stuff and some good stuff so we're not we're not really sure okay
um but the one i wanted to bring up was buccaneer oh so buccaneer is from the mid-17th century and
it was it basically started on what is modern day haiti or at that time it was called santo domingo
um but uh or san doming if you're if you're french um what yeah so from french buccaneer
uh which is a frame on which to cook or cure meat so essentially they had these they had rebels that
lived in the mountains right a lot of them were uh you know failed plantation owners because a lot
of people went to the new world and fell to the plantations escaped slaves and what they would do
is they would escape into the mountains and they part of what they ate was this um this cured meat
that they were really known for and they would trade that with passing pirates and that sort of
thing so if you were somebody who ate this um you made it on what was called a uh a bouquin
which is basically like a a wooden box that you hang some strings from and then it would all dry
out and then you would and so if you were eat you ate that you were a buccaneer because you ate this
particular food and that's where the term buccaneer comes from because you know they're on the on the
ocean for months at a time dried meat's all you could eat so the tampa bay cured meat eaters yeah
100 sorry bizarre and yeah so yeah checkered past sorry sorry i didn't have a better answer for that
but buccaneer that was another one where i thought that's crazy thank you adam i like learning random
random scott wheeler tweeted out a list yesterday of the following players on team canada's long
list for consideration for the olympics the list includes cole perfetti owen power mason mctavish
kent johnston eric stall cody franzen dev dubnik uh peyton krebs i recognize ghouli almost all
those names which is not something i expected by the way i'm i'm so happy that josh hosang's name
is on that list that makes me really happy hosang michael delzotto uh devon levy brendan leipsic
jake vertanen now those last two names i just mentioned uh caused a storm on uh what in the
hockey world there was a storm a storm surge and rightfully so and rightfully so they just don't
need to be there right i don't think they'll be there i think if you're making a list you have
to include everybody that can play hockey at that level and then you go cross out cross out cross
out cross out for whatever reason you want yeah i suppose nah i was gonna say i suppose i could
understand them being on the long list because the long list is 55 players long so now you're
making a 55 player list that involves no one from the nhl yeah you're gonna be digging pretty deep
into there but i just don't think those guys should be on the team no they shouldn't they
should be and really i mean and i just said it but like you make a long list of people who can
play hockey at that level yeah and then you go immediately no and immediately no yeah and in
fact what i would hope they would do is they just knock those guys off the 55 list and bring two
other people on right um well and like if you like vertanen is an absolute non-starter if you showed
me like what would happen with livesick um i think there's there's somebody there that if you showed
uh an actual receipts receipt like i have gone to anger manager i've gone to this whatever whatever
it was that created that situation and if you remember it was a bunch of dms it's a pretty
fucking nasty stuff like there's some deep-seated shit here um then then maybe you have that
conversation right then maybe you go okay has and even then you go yeah but is he the is he a guy
that we absolutely have to have no probably not so even then he's a decent performer in the khl
this year yeah and like those are the sort of dudes you're looking at you're looking at
top scores in khl you're looking at top scores in university you're looking at some of the top
junior guys ahl guys who are eligible which is interesting because so there are two guys on that
list who i think are not actually eligible okay peyton krebs is one who because he's in the nhl
right now he previously wasn't um so that's another interesting one is um if a guy is on an
is in the ahl on an nhl contract is he allowed to go i didn't understand that so krebs was that
until recently now he's with the buffalo sabers with a nasty freaking assist on alex tucks uh
versus the saber and i think the other guy is jack quinn but and it's a shame about those last
two names because there's some legitimately interesting names on this list yeah josh
hosang is a guy that leaf fans can cheer for devin levi was a spectacular goalie for canada
at the world juniors and he's unreal at the university level this year um owen power is a
a name they're considering first overall pick from 2021 i don't ever i don't think team canada
or yeah team canada or hockey canada in ever intended this list to get out but no it's it's
a shame those names were written down well jake fortana especially it's a shame the name was ever
written down but i don't think they ever saw hey somebody's gonna be like hey you put jake
fortana because i don't he's not gonna make the team the list probably if the list never comes
out then this is never a conversation there's probably so i skipped a step so you're looking
at the best players from university khl blah you're probably looking at them and going all
right how many of the guys um or you start the list with who has played in the nhl in the last
two years right so um i think scott wilson who's on the list i don't know if he's played in the
last two years but he's got some nhl experience adam cracknell he's got nhl experience and he's
really good at the AHL level and you know at some point you get far enough down the list and you go
well there's Brendan Leipzig and there's Jake Furtanen right so that's probably how it happened
I don't uh that's that's such an interesting point I'd be curious to know how they feel about
this list getting out at all because now we're gonna look at a guy like Hoseg who has a history
of contention with hockey canada when he didn't make well he wasn't invited to world junior camp
yeah i remember that story i remember that was a big deal and we were like well geez what's what's
the problem here now you know if he didn't make the team there's added investment from people
like if this never gets out and he doesn't make the team people go well we don't know if he was
ever even considered but if he is considered and then he goes on a tear before the olympics and
it's obvious he should make the team then at least one fan base is gonna sort of get their hopes up
for him you know what i mean uh it's a i don't like that the i i badly wish the overwhelming
conversation around this team was positive right now if that makes sense yep there are some names
there are some names and i own power that'd be awesome yeah devin levi that'd be awesome
Yeah, Caden Gouley
Montreal Canadiens fans get excited about that
He was another one, I'm not sure
We also, I just want to mention to you guys
We have a trade that just broke
It's relatively minor
What are the two teams?
What is this bit?
Pittsburgh, Chicago
Oh, okay, so there's definitely salary retained
Because they love doing that with each other
Crosby for Taves
Not quite
Just say it
Sam Lafferty.
Whoa!
Of 10 games this year.
Yeah.
For Alex Nylander.
Actually?
Oh, that's not a bad trade at all.
Alex Nylander has not played since 1920, though,
because he's got a knee injury.
Oh.
He had 26 points in 65 games for Chicago that year.
Lafferty is actually playing.
I'm wondering if Nylander's getting ready to come back,
but yeah, he's not played.
I wonder if the Nylander camp facilitated this
by going get me the hell out of chicago because as i understand it it was not a great fit
oh i mean good for the pittsburgh penguins for turning mark donk into a former first rounder
they did sam lafferty is mark donk he is and i'm not even saying that as an insult remember
mark donk from actin a fuleman generally turns out to be a very good and useful player
I'm trying to look up Sam Lafferty's stats
because I know he's like a Wilkes-Barre penguin
who
gets his shots with the penguin
actually no I should put some respect on his name
he hasn't played in the AHL
since the bubble
season and it was only
six games
he's played 94 consecutive
games in the NHL
six goals
and 15 assists for 21 points
that is some Mark Donkiness
i think we should wrap the show there no with a just a sizzling alex kneelander trade but i just
thought you should hear that so we love you and we will see you next episode on the steve dangle
podcast what are we talking about who knows but the leafs are playing the oilers tonight
