Thanks so much for being here.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Does it feel a little bit weird to be called legend? It does. Yeah? It does. Are you used to it yet? It feels good, but also makes you feel old, obviously. So a little bit of positive and negative. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:12 So listen, we're so appreciative of you being here, not only because, obviously, we grew up watching you play, but also because I think this is a pretty interesting time to be associated with the Sharks organization, with all these young guys coming up we want to talk to you about about that we want to talk to you about your career i i think the first thing though is uh pretty impossible to leave san jose once you're here isn't it it's amazing i mean uh san jose itself is one thing but if and when you drive 30 minutes which i'm about 25 minutes out in a small town called los gatos and it's
Starting point is 00:02:45 it's like being in the middle of like italy or something and it's just it's absolutely amazing and the weather's freaking amazing like 11 months a year we average like 28 rain days a year so i golf three days three days a week all year long how's your game uh pretty good down to a three five oh wow jesse's a big golfer over here yeah no that's great yeah yeah i wasn't there two years ago but playing two three times a week uh and then there's tahoe and then there's wine country and you got like the monterey and within a four hour radius i think you got everything you need well I was going to say you've you've played on basically uh every stage there is and and not not everyone can say they played on both coasts right yeah so what uh are some of the
Starting point is 00:03:32 differences maybe not everyone knows about playing in a place like San Jose versus playing in a place like New York yeah I uh I started two teams in Florida for 10 years then went all the way to california for uh and then finished with two in new york so obviously uh the warm weather uh there is something to be said about climate and how happy that makes you feel so um waking up in the morning to sunshine and birds chirping is a lot better than i'm from ottawa originally you guys are from toronto yep then waking up to freezing rain and like you know like just like i was just in ottawa visiting my family in february it was fucking miserable yeah it's easier to be pissed off in that weather and it just it just kind of like you start off your day like I like a lesser
Starting point is 00:04:17 you know number than you would be waking up with the with the with that so I got a little taste of that in New York at the end but I wouldn't say the weather was was an issue or anything it was still a pretty awesome place to play at MSG with a great organization but there's something to be said about playing in a really nice weather area the thing is for some guys it's tough because they kind of tend to check out a little bit and I want to go golfing today and stuff you got to stay focused um because you know we have a job to do playing hockey so so that's something that uh we we spoke to ethan cardwell with the barracuda and uh william ecklund and when we talked to them about the weather because uh cardwell grew up in ontario ecklund grew up in sweden they're like
Starting point is 00:04:56 yeah it makes you soft how do you stay battle ready i can i can see that like you'll see some guys come in some days with like freaking red tomato face like they're laying out all day like that can't do that so enjoy the weather enjoy the weather but like you know you got to be you still got a job to do so that's that's the one thing do you ever do you ever evaluate the faces of the road team you're like all right all right easy pickings tonight yeah yeah you know what you're right thinking back looking and like yeah yeah free agency decisions how much does the city go into it because san jose obviously a beautiful beautiful place like is it the team is it the city is it the weather is the money it's it's a combination of all those things uh some guys are
Starting point is 00:05:37 We're money hungry. Obviously, taxes in California aren't good, so we're not going to get the guys that are looking for the big contract. But I think for me, when it came time to come here, it was team. Obviously, we're going to talk about it. I'm sure this team's in a complete rebuild, but, you know, three, four years from now, this is going to be a heck of a team. And then place to live.
Starting point is 00:05:55 It depends if you're single, you're raising a family, you're looking at schools, you're looking at weather, you're looking at all sorts of different things. So it's a combination of all those things. But I think for me as an athlete and player, a winning team was probably at the top of my list. I'm trying to remember because I just remember you being on really, really good teams. Were you ever really part of a rebuild? So my first four years with the Florida Panthers, but I wasn't playing a ton.
Starting point is 00:06:21 So it was a struggle to kind of get in the lineup. So I don't know if we could call ourselves a rebuild at that point. But it was probably the only four years where I don't think we made the playoffs in the four years that I was there. But the next 14 years, I made the playoffs every year, so I never had to deal with that. So your experience with that might be actually more applicable to a lot of the guys in this team, right? Because you were the young guy trying to establish yourself in the league.
Starting point is 00:06:46 So what's that like? Well, I mean, I wasn't drafted, so my leash was shorter than short. I signed out of Miami, Ohio as a free agent only because Bill Davich, throwing out some names here was the uh he was a golf instructor at Miami Ohio and a part-time scout for the Florida Panthers and so that's the only reason I got a NHL contract the other at the time 29 teams weren't going to sign me and so for me my leash was extremely short first camp they didn't even give me an opportunity sent to the minors but not only was I not sent to their farm team which was in New Haven Connecticut at the time I was sent off to Lexington Kentucky
Starting point is 00:07:27 which was ironically san jose's farm team at the time okay the kentucky thoroughblades really so you talk about like you know match you know things that are meant to be or whatever so yeah i'm 21 i guess i get sent four of us we call ourselves the rejects all the florida guys are in new haven we get sent to lexington with a bunch of san jose guys it ended up being a blessing in disguise lexington was great i played for roy summers who's like a freaking legend in the hl and played half a season, then got called up. And I would say 18 years later, the rest is history. So it was, for me, my experience wasn't great
Starting point is 00:08:06 because my leash was so short during camp at the NHL level. But eventually, they just, you know, I kind of did pretty well in the NHL. They just had to give me an opportunity, and I made the best of it. When you have this many young players all together at once, and those Florida teams would have been a mix, I think. Yeah, it was a little bit on the older end. They had like, you know, we had Pavel Bury, Mullen B. There was some older guys.
Starting point is 00:08:28 There wasn't a ton of young guys, maybe like five or six. That's a crazy flex, by the way. Yeah, by the way, yeah. Pavel Bury. Oli Okunin. Yeah, my first Oli was there. He was on the young side. Yeah, Lou and I were buddies off the ice.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Lou Longo, Mark Parrish. So I would say there was six to seven younger guys, and then the rest were all pretty established older guys. But it was a team that was just – it was a struggle. Yeah. Yeah. Well, and so like with, with these guys and obviously we're going to talk, we're going to kind of come in and out of how your career can relate to this because there's some, I think there's some parallels with those great sharks teams of the early 2010s to the mid 2010s and beyond that you were a part of. And I think, you know, when you're a young player and you're trying to break in and, you know, coaches can be, especially at the NHL level, pretty tough that how do you, how do you even get a coach to look at you? how do you get how do you get their attention like you're going into camp you've got pavel
Starting point is 00:09:20 beret yeah i do i have some a lot of stories how long do we have uh so again as long as you're willing i i was here all afternoon i went through four coaches in four years in florida it was it was and it was a nightmare and like i said i i wasn't getting any ice time i was i was thrown in as a seventh defenseman i was thrown in as a power play only player so i there's some games where i got a call tap on the shoulder middle of the second period that was my first shift you know run the power play it was it was a joke um i got games where i was dressed as a fourth forward and i was like okay uh so it was it was a rough go i remember going in a lot to one of the coaches asking for ice time he said grow two inches gain 15 20 pounds of muscle and i'll you
Starting point is 00:10:01 can play for me i'm like i can't it was ridiculous right so i had mike keenan who was freaking awful i'll say it right now uh he was a terrible coach for me uh i was there i think 19 games i was scratch like 16 in a row and then Lance Pitlick to throw an old name out there had a baby at last second then they called me and that's how I got the three games uh but that was it so it was tough uh I think then I was on cruise control for like the rest of my career and then when I retired I realized at the beginning at the end how important coaching is um because for the 12 years in Tampa and in san jose i don't say like i was just kind of doing my thing they were allowing me to do my thing i had proved myself at that point but a coach is very important the development of a young
Starting point is 00:10:49 player and um you know those sharks those young guys you know hopefully they have the right guys pushing them there is something to be said for coaches that can handle young talent mike keenan seems like a guy that couldn't uh i mean even gretzky didn't like playing for him right like so it's it's you know there are people that loved him there are people that didn't yeah um what is it about you know mike keenan for instance uh that that didn't gel with young players well i mean geez again how long do we have i mean he came in and berated um again throwing names of old unless they're watching andres erickson bubba erickson yeah uh so again i hadn't played first period we come in he bubba's to my left he comes in he's you're a fucking
Starting point is 00:11:32 terrible and then he looks at me he goes you're fucking worse and i'm like i i i didn't say this but i'm thinking i haven't played right so he goes off on baba and he looks at me he goes you're fucking worse and i go and i'm in my head i'm like i literally i haven't played right but you can't say anything because i'm a 21 22 year old kid that you know so to me that's horrible coaching um or or at the very least bring me in the locker room after and or in your office and say hey man i just did that for a reason blah blah blah and build me up right and to me that's when you tear guys down i think that to me is bad coaching i think you obviously can't let the young guys do what they want they have to be within a system but find a way to get
Starting point is 00:12:20 squeeze the best out of them and that's where i think mike failed me at least and failed a lot of other guys now you then move on to another tough coach right so you move yeah literally the the the cross state rival tampa bay lightning you end up playing for john tortorella and this is a team on the rise they are a lot of young good players brad richards marty st louis vincent le cavalier there's so many great players there that you know gone on to you know make the hall of fame and and and you know ultimately you guys won a cup torts just either stepped down or was let go depending upon who you ask as of this morning yes i did see that yeah what's he like to play for you we're still in your early 20s yeah so at this point i had four years in florida
Starting point is 00:12:58 i wasn't getting in the lineup i get traded to tampa which at the time were they were second to last in the league i think florida was last since tampa was second last and i just kind of had a talk with myself in the mirror and i said i'm i'm just gonna go and play my game because I'm out I'm basically I've got one and a half feet out the door out of the NHL like I'm barely getting an opportunity here so I'm just going to play my game so I get there half after the right around the trade deadline and the team's last so they basically just put torts didn't know who I was um Rick Dudley's the one who got me who I've never met to this day so I don't know if he's watching he traded he's the one that traded for me he changed my life and I've never met him
Starting point is 00:13:38 um so I would give him a big hug today but he's the one that got me torts didn't know who I was and Craig Ramsey was our D coach so he also saved my career but yeah it was just they just threw us out there and the team was way out of a playoff spot which is what the Sharks are now and some guys didn't respond and then others like me and Marty and you know Brad and Vinny were young and we just kind of like put something together the second half of that season and then we made the playoffs the next year and won a cup two years later so we went from basically last to winning a cup within two years Torts had a lot to do with that but he had to learn we had to learn how to play under him but I think he also learned how to coach certain guys differently and it took
Starting point is 00:14:23 Marty and it took me and it took Richie and Vinny going in and there were some headbutts there was some stuff that I'm taking to my grave I mean Torts will know what we're talking what I'm talking about you know it wasn't pretty but at the end of the day there was respect and we had a couple tussles but i was playing 30 minutes a night he's the only coach wow he's the only coach that ever yelled at me for coming off the ice hey under what circumstance so it was a power play um i want to say i was out there for like 40 seconds first power play and it was one of those nights i'm not feeling it i'm not making my passes aren't crisp i'm just i'm off so as a team guy i'm like i'm gonna let kubina whoever's next go do it right and then the next day he waited the next day
Starting point is 00:15:14 team meeting he had little laser pointers yeah yes i remember he plays the power play so 40 seconds in presses pause and then goes like this look circles the time remaining power play it was one it says like 122 left he goes what the fuck are you doing i go i go i'm getting off i'm like i'm having a shitty night i'm not fucking playing well i'm you know and he goes you fucking stay out there you stay out there and he was basically saying stay out there we want you we need you and it was like this weird like oh shit like this guy real like and it was that made me feel so good it's a bit of a change from you're worse yeah right like complete opposite here i am like trying to do the right thing get off the ice and he's the
Starting point is 00:16:00 only coach that ever yelled at me for coming off and he was like stay on and again six years there i led the league in ice time i think me it was me and char like neck and neck for like six years and so how can i complain about playing for torts um he got the best out of us but you have to have thick skin and that's where the ones the players that don't usually will crumble under torts but the guys that do have thick skin can thrive day to day does he have that big personality like every day you walk in is it that kind of same vibe or is it different it depends on the day obviously does it depend on the game before it depends on the game before depends on the day um we had a great leader dave andrew chuck uh was our captain and he was 40 and he was kind of the
Starting point is 00:16:41 buffer between torts and us and andy was super important for us in tampa uh torts would come in yell at us and andy would be like you know fuck that or whatever and we would kind of come together almost in spite of him which i think is what he he wanted you know uh which is probably a coaching tactic that worked obviously for us and it it kept us together but yeah there were days where we thought we're gonna get chewed out and we came out and we were like we put tennis balls out there and we were practicing how to like block shots with tennis balls which was kind of weird and fun but like so he was it was it was it was it was it was unpredictable but um obviously efficient we won a cup well you answered my question right before i was going to ask it like
Starting point is 00:17:23 does he have a tell or did you just not know what was ever going to come yeah i don't think he did but i think i think the struggle is the how long you know you i think you can do that i think that's why what we've seen from torts is when he usually shows up it's effective early on and then eventually sometimes some guys can tune out and it gets hard and that's where i think you know i I can't speak for torts and what he's done in the last 10 years. I haven't been in the locker room, but, um, I know for us as it dragged on, you know, it got a little harder on some guys. And so, um, but no, it was definitely unpredictable, but held guys accountable.
Starting point is 00:17:59 And he was always the best coach for me to inspire. You know, you show up to Phoenix back in the day or Chicago when they were bad and there was nobody in the crowd. He, he, his speeches are really good and he finds a way to motivate guys. Sometimes life throws your curve balls and you don't have time to get to them. And that's where TaskRabbit comes in. And I think you should check this out because here's the deal. One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to rappel down and clean all the windows.
Starting point is 00:18:27 But they never clean my windows. Uh-oh. And their way around on that is like, well, it's a patio window. You can do that yourself. And I'm like, well, hang on a second. What if I don't want to? I don't have the stuff because you've got to have that scraper thing and the washer thing. The chemicals.
Starting point is 00:18:40 You've got to have the right chemicals. See, that's what I'm saying. And that's why I used TaskRabbit and I employed a tasker. Here's the thing. TaskRabbit connects you with taskers in your area for furniture assembly, home repairs, lawn maintenance, mounting, window cleaning, all that stuff. Starting point is 00:19:56 With Tampa and then with San Jose, you were at the beginning of southern markets that Canadians and northern Americans had sort of doubted, right? tampa before you got there was really an also ran like not a great market they were consistently bad yeah you had a couple of good players like you know chris gratton and stuff like that but there wasn't the the culture there and i i wonder how much do you think that cup had to do with building what has become probably a top three and it's a market to play in uh i i i think a lot i I think our fans, the building went from being pretty empty to you couldn't get a ticket in Tampa for years. And it became a destination place, which it is now.
Starting point is 00:20:44 So, again, back to what you asked me earlier. Place you want to bring your family, absolutely. Weather's great. You want to make money, there's no state tax. Good team. So I think we played a part in it. Obviously, the organization is really well run now with Mr. Vinnick is doing a great job and they're finding ways to compete every year and uh and san jose is was very
Starting point is 00:21:06 similar you know minus this rebuild right now i think the fans here when we were here i was over here here in 08 to 14 a sellout for 13 years in a row this was the my favorite building to play on as a visiting player and as a and as a home player um well not this building but you know I mean yeah for a second I was like wait yeah taxi you let's go let's go uh but the tank the tank was my favorite place to play and and the building was freaking awesome the fans were great and uh again besides the state tax money that you're losing in California I you know San Jose is an amazing place to play and should be a destination place uh for players to come to it was probably weird uh to to get cheered for in vancouver for like a two-week period right
Starting point is 00:21:55 we were we were all in the same boat with that there's a lot of guys that uh uh obviously were from other markets that were you know um used to getting booed but obviously canadians are gonna are gonna pick their their country over uh you know personal beefs so we haven't met before today but i i did walk by you in the streets in vancouver during the olympics and i just remember thinking i'm sure you remember that too no no no no i'm not saying do you remember my face yeah no uh but i remember because it was such a frenzy at those olympics being like i don't i don't think he's going to be able to enjoy his night very very much did you just get mobbed every day yeah we were we were pretty uh we had security
Starting point is 00:22:38 everywhere we went we didn't get to go see other events or whatever we were pretty pulled up in our hotel meeting restaurant all I'm surprised and even like after we won the gold it was a pretty red velvet ropey type situation and yeah it was we didn't get to do a whole lot but we were pretty focused on obviously winning because I tell a lot of people like if we don't win that gold medal like we're not getting like welcome not necessarily welcome to Canada silver medal in canada and hockey is not what you know people wouldn't have been down for no it would not have been good that would not have been good silver medal wouldn't have been like yay you go it would have been like get the fuck out of here so you know the the very told story i guess is is
Starting point is 00:23:23 the gold medal i i want to know what it was like after that loss to the states in the round robin because that was obviously uh uh line in the sand yeah i i can't say specifically i remember anything that like jumps out at me obviously you know um you talk about gelling and stuff like that i mean you got guys that are playing 30 minutes on every team and they're coming in some guys are playing fourth line um you got to share the ice time you got to share your role it it takes a minute you know to to figure that out and i think that's where we were guys you don't want to overdo it you don't want to like overstep and you got crosby in the room and you got these hall of famers and you try not to take ice time away from Scott Niedermeyer you know Chris Pronger
Starting point is 00:24:05 half the team is sharks um so it's like yeah right uh it just we just didn't have it early on and then we turned it up when we needed to that's that's all it was I don't I don't remember anything specific to be honest with you so yourself Mike Greer Thornton Marlo the Bokoff you guys all decide to work for the organization all the people from the early 2010s team is it fun having everybody around how did i i i'm not officially working for the team i do a lot for the alumni um but you're not even being paid to be here no that's crazy wow what'd you tell this guy that's unreal uh you know what it's a special place it was a special place for us while we played here i think a lot of our kids were born here my two girls were born here um i don't know
Starting point is 00:24:54 it's just a special place and i think that's why a lot of the guys come back and that's why you see some of the guys working for the team i personally don't but um i enjoy being attached to the team somehow is there a lot of reminiscing when you see them yeah well we just had the last thing we had which was pretty big which was joe thorne's uh retirement so they flew in a bunch of guys we played actually at now this actual arena uh we played an old-timers game we called it uh what they call it a legends game i think legend right legends games way better yeah uh and they sold this place out and it was freaking awesome and
Starting point is 00:25:29 I mean there was a lot of reminiscing for sure I remember they did a legends game between Detroit and Toronto about seven or eight years ago it was right at the beginning of the Matthews sort of era and Chris Draper and Gary Roberts got into a fight I do vaguely remember that how competitive are these
Starting point is 00:25:45 legends I do well those now you got two teams on opposite right so this was one organization so you all like each other one guy did get hit in the face with like 15 minutes to go but it was a puck but But, yeah, this was one organization. But I can see if you put two different ones together, I could see some. It gets a little spicy.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Yeah. The juices start flowing. I could definitely eat. You know, I could see some nastiness for sure. You were, the story goes that, you know, when Tampa traded you here, you had a no trade, but they basically sort of said, we'll put you on waivers if you're not going to go. And we've seen that.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Actually, we saw that happen to Barclay Goudreau this past offseason. It's growing in popularity. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How do you feel about that? there are people that say that shouldn't be allowed i guess legally it is allowed but ethically i think it's kind of horseshit um i i didn't know there was a difference between a no trade clause and a no move clause um but yeah a no trade clause means we can't trade you but we can put you on waivers and that's what they did they threatened to put me on waivers and at the time um atlanta
Starting point is 00:26:47 was next in line and i figured and i mean i guess no offense to atlanta people watching but it wasn't a great team it wasn't a great setup it wasn't a great situation there and i i got scared i mean it was a game of chicken i could have said go ahead but how would i have felt you know moving to atlanta in my situation and uh i just decided to take matters in my own hand and and say okay let's move on i'm gonna look at see where i want to go and and how did you come down to san jose i mean obviously they have gordon marlo nabok yeah well again back to again talking about winning team right so i looked i i narrowed it down right away i had my little sheet i narrowed down to like 10 teams um and then the last three were uh philly was i was a flyers fan growing up
Starting point is 00:27:28 yep um i'm from ottawa but i didn't want to play for ottawa so my whole family grew up as a montreal canadian fan obviously the history of being a montreal canadian was uh so it was montreal philadelphia and then you look at weather you look at team and opportunity to win a place to live san jose was kind of it was one two three and obviously i picked the right spot We didn't win. We did everything but win. But it was an amazing six years here. What do you think being – like that group of guys was pretty special, right?
Starting point is 00:27:58 It was a pretty special group. And like we're talking, I think young Joel Pavelski was in there too. Absolutely. You know, what do you hope when you talk to some of the young guys around here? And, you know, and obviously Jumbo's around. And I think I saw Scott Hannon on the ice the other day. Navs was just down here training somebody. Like you've got all these guys who keep coming back.
Starting point is 00:28:18 Mike Ricci was actually chirping us from down the hallway. we were doing a show as you should i'm sure um what is it that you guys hope that you can impart to these young guys because like well william macklin seemed first off he seemed great like a great person macklin and will smith seem like great people and there it's a lot though we were outside of sap the other day and they're all up on the side of it and they're like 20 21 and some in some cases they can't drink yet yeah like you know i wonder how do you try to i don't know if you're trying to recreate or trying to give them the tools to create their own i think both i think they need to understand like some guys listen they haven't made haven't made the playoffs in
Starting point is 00:28:57 six years some of these guys don't know what it's like to actually play here and get the full experience their experience hasn't been great their team hasn't won their team hasn't in the playoffs some guys haven't that's kind of a shitty feeling so they don't they haven't gotten to experience what it's like to play here in san jose when the crowd is buzzing in the playoffs there's no better time to play hockey here so you want to try to let them know that hey this is this is it's right there for you but you gotta figure it out but like you said the faces of this team are not the Pavel Beres or Dave Anderchuk's or you know the older guys that have been around we're leaning on 20 year olds 19 year olds 18 year olds to take it to the next
Starting point is 00:29:38 level and you know they're gonna have a big summer here try to you know manage some free agency and try to get in some guys big money available there's a lot of money available um you've got your core young guys but it's time to take the next step here we can't be missing the playoffs six years in a row and be okay with that so um i i did an event in tahoe for like this and again i'm not a i don't do this kind of shit often but like we're glad you're doing it today thank you you've been great thank you for doing this so they take me out to tahoe and they do like this like hot stove like 15 20 minute thing with all their sponsors and um uh i don't know it's supposed to be kind of fun and all of a sudden somebody asked me what do you think about the team losing
Starting point is 00:30:18 in it and i just went like psycho and like switch went off and i'm like going like this and i'm like well you know you got fucking we got a fucking we got and then like i talked a couple people after like that was unbelievable that was amazing like my i had goosebumps i want to go out there and fight someone i'm like yeah like that's what i want those players to feel i want them to feel this like energy and the desire to fight and not this little there we go again like we're losing and stuff i want somebody to step up not just the young guys but the guys have been here two three four years take that next step don't accept losing and i think that's what we need and instead of it being three four years away maybe it's two years away right right because i think i think
Starting point is 00:30:59 at this pace right now i think it you could argue you could argue it's worth three four years away but that'll be 10 years without the playoffs. Can we do what Tampa did when I got there, which is miss the playoffs and win the cup in two years? It can be done. Well, they need Dan Boyle to show up. Yeah, that's right. They need Dan Boyle to run the power play.
Starting point is 00:31:16 You got to find guys like Marty St. Louis and myself, guys that were undrafted. You got your top, you got your first round picks. You got to find some gems in the rough. And, you know, then you got to get some of the older veteran guys that are going to show them how to do it. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters.

Starting point is 00:32:13 Wayfair, every style, every home. You're, um, like any NHL player we talk to, especially after the career's over, because when you're in the career, talking to the media, you kind of have to be guarded, right? You have to be taking care of the team and you're representing a brand. We get that. it's always fun talking to guys post-career because they have first up you've got great stories the second thing is you get to see the competitiveness come out and i remember and this is 2017 or 2018 boys we were flown down with air canada uh it was their like swan song for the air canada center before it switched to scotia bank and we were on a plane with a whole bunch of fans
Starting point is 00:32:50 this was 2018 yeah and we went to boston and on the plane with us were some lease alumni so you had ally afraidy and i'll never forget darcy tucker okay so we went in and this is where the leafs got slammed it was four nothing before the first period was over steve and jesse and i were kind of we were all in different spots around the arena i think steve and i were together for one part i'm pretty sure a bruins fan bought us a beer yeah they were like they were embarrassed and tucker's a pity beer afterwards and we always talk about this story he said i just want to march in there and grab those guys oh do you realize how few opportunities you get to do this and And so I guess it's a two-part question.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Number one, is it frustrating for you watching young guys because of that? Number two, how competitive are you in things outside of hockey? Oh, God. Well, I will start with two. It really is. I mean, I didn't – again, I had to fight to make it to the NHL. I battled my ass off just to get an opportunity. And sometimes I look at these guys and I'm like, they're getting called up
Starting point is 00:33:52 and they're getting opportunity after opportunity. They're not taking advantage of that opportunity. And I don't know if it's like something interior on the inside and they just don't have that desire, but it is definitely frustrating. And then you've got guys that are working their ass off and you feel bad for them because they can't get into the playoffs or to the next level. So I do get frustrated watching.
Starting point is 00:34:14 It's been pretty tough. I do see some hope. I do see some light at the end of it, some glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel. But it's been tough. and yeah and and anyone that knows me that's watching or like i there's a lot of us that consider ourselves competitive but i'm i would put myself at the top i my golf buddies will will attest to this i i don't i'm i'm i'm a mean motherfucker man and my poor my poor daughters
Starting point is 00:34:43 which are not going to watch this my kids would not watch i just i everybody's got a different style of parenting i i feel like you got to earn it so i've never been one to like give it and allow like my children to like beat me in this be man no i make it close i give my make it close but then i slam the door i said well you gotta work harder to get it and then when they eventually beat me it's like my daughter beat me at uh uh this it's on a pool table it's called pig it's not actual pool but she beat me the other day and she like the smile on her face was just like it was amazing because she knows it doesn't happen very often but that's I feel there's something to that I feel like a lot
Starting point is 00:35:26 of kids now they they get their participation ribbon and it's everybody's happy and everybody and I I didn't grow up that way and I kind of feel like it it doesn't have to be that way I think there could be a happy medium somewhere in there do your kids play hockey do we got a next two girls no two girls no hockey one's a volleyball and lacrosse which i've never watched lacrosse in my i just um so it's her third game so i'm still learning the rules myself and then my other daughter plays field hockey which is not my favorite sport to watch at the moment hopefully as they improve as they get older but uh but they're both um in sports just no uh two girls never really had any desire to play hockey i know you were proud when she won
Starting point is 00:36:09 that game you were a little pissed too i was super pissed what do you like when you're pissed i was very pissed you've been very relaxed today so i uh are you loud no i grunt i grunt a lot uh what's the soccer show on uh apple on apple tv yeah who's the who's the the oh um uh i've been comparing roy kent yes yes yes yes i've been i've been said i'm like roy kent Like just kind of, no, I, I get pissed. I, I, I, I, yeah, I just, I get mad. I just, I, I, I love winning and I, I, I love attempting to win. I love what comes with that. I love that you said, what are you like when you're mad?
Starting point is 00:36:50 I was going to say, is this interview more enjoyable than any you've ever done with Larry Brooks? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And yeah, yeah. I've talked about that too. I, that was one of those too. Like I was, I was handcuffed for two years there. And at the end of the year, I'm like, I'm not going to be quiet anymore like media has a responsibility to cover the game but when they take it personable it becomes trash and it becomes like about them and it becomes inaccurate and wrong and like and Boyle did this I was like wait I wasn't on the ice for that
Starting point is 00:37:21 fucking goal like that kind of shit right um so I obviously blew up at the end of that year and what people don't know is that I showed up for a team dinner that night and I got a standing ovation from my teammates wow um which gives me goosebumps to think about because i was a voice for them to say what they couldn't and uh i felt like shit for a couple hours after but um after i said that but that night everything went away because i knew i did the right thing and um you know those guys to this day are like that was fucking incredible torts had a few run-ins with him too yeah he did him torts and i talked about that too and he was he was okay with that too and And I got texts from players that I didn't know, numbers that I was getting saying,
Starting point is 00:38:02 thank you for saying what I didn't have the balls to say. Wow. So with that, you spend your whole career in San Jose, Tampa, and Florida. Three of the, I'd say, lesser media markets. You go to New York, and we come from Toronto, the biggest one. Is it different? Is it harder to play in those media markets? Again, I don't have a problem with the media at all if they cover it appropriately.
Starting point is 00:38:22 I think if teams aren't playing well and players aren't working their butts off and doing the right thing, then come at me and that's fine. I got no problem with that. In New York, we had a president team one year. You know, we had a very good team for two years. But I was surprised at how negative the media was. You know, even though we were a President's Cup team, the media can be negative. and you know players always say oh we don't listen to that we don't read that whatever but it's i don't buy that because they're enormous liars yeah because you you you yeah that's you may not
Starting point is 00:39:00 read it but you know who does your buddy that you went to college with your dad yeah your brother your uncle they read it and they're like oh i heard so-and-so said this i'm like oh well fuck okay like you're it's probably true we don't read that shit but someone does and it does filter in the locker room so that's that's probably a hard thing to deal with playing in some of these cities like Toronto and New York and you know the Canadian cities where it does creep in and you just got to make sure as as teammates that you stick together who's your favorite team to beat oh good question I know um well it depends where where where I was obviously when we were here we had a we had LA and and the Sharks had a big rivalry so so beating LA
Starting point is 00:39:44 was always great uh when i was in tampa um detroit um you know we had a little thing ottawa we had a little thing um i don't know everybody that's a great everyone so is there is there a a highlight that you remember your favorite moment as a shark where you're like that is the one like if i'm gonna if i'm gonna put a picture of myself up on my wall that's the that's the moment i want to catch well this is gonna this is a weird question and you may be i may be skipping ahead to another question but so i i have a famous own goal in colorado in the playoffs where a lot of people think it went directly in but it was banked off someone's shin pad and goes in it's a backhand that if i tried honestly god a thousand times and although nabby
Starting point is 00:40:32 is a shitty goalie but i don't think you hear that sure that's a chirp that's a chirp that's that's a trick that's a trick uh no but nabby saves that i i would have to take try 10 000 of those and i think nabby stops 9999 of them so it goes in uh we lose a playoff game own goal which is freaking nightmare media comes in after they're like you know my our media guys are like hey just you want to just go shower and i said no fuck let's fucking go like i was like let's deal with it and i just handle the questions i'm like hey yeah i fucking score my own goal it sucks but like it is what it is we got to move on blah blah so the next in hockey you don't play back to back it's not like baseball or i wish there was like i had 48 hours and it was a tough 48 hours and
Starting point is 00:41:24 i was the type of guy where like i have these movies in my head of like shifts or things that i did poorly and they just keep playing and playing and playing and i would just kept seeing at seeing it for 48 hours. So it was a rough 48 hours. But what I am most proud of, to answer your question, is how I fought back from that adversity. The next game was probably my best of the playoffs. I had the first goal in the first period. I played lights out. We come back, we win the series. So that kind of moment going from the low of low to rallying, staying strong, and coming back showing my team what i was made of um i would say that kind of picture if you will um would probably be something that i would hang over my fireplace or something okay now uh a couple
Starting point is 00:42:11 of things first thing is rem pitlick plays uh for the barracuda uh that's your former teammates kid lance yeah lance's kid yeah how does that feel seeing that yeah he's not the only one i mean there's a ton of guys now with their kids are playing Eklund right hey how old are you yeah well yeah you're old right I wanted to get into that because you played with with Eklund's dad yeah so so lockout year 2004 um my old buddy Marcus Nielsen says come out to Sweden with me again it wasn't a money grab it was just it was just me experience I want to experience something else and I play for a team called Durgarden and uh uh Eklund's dad was my teammate and i think he might have been like 10 or 11 because i think there was a picture i don't know
Starting point is 00:42:56 there's a picture of me and him and he might have been eight or nine i don't know but uh but yeah no there's a lot of guys now as i get older and older that you know there's the kids that claude lemieux who was here like his son um was god i don't know how young he was when claude was here and now he's i don't know if he's where he's playing now but uh but yeah there's a there's a bunch of those guys now and just it's like shit what was hockey in sweden like um the hockey was great it was totally different we played in this arena called the globen which is a big looks like epcot center a big ball um it was had like a little soccer atmosphere with a crowd chance during the game that's cool which was very very weird and fun um the ice surface was bigger and
Starting point is 00:43:39 i can tell you right now that bigger ice surface doesn't make a better game there was a lot of room out there um shooting the puck from the blue line it was everything was further um it wasn't a better product a better game so i didn't like that but it was it was humbling for a lot of us coming from the nhl flying private uh eating private nice meals to my first trip we took a double decker boss uh we got to the pregame meal and it was like swedish like fish it's got a name and there was something like called like spam and cheese and i was like on on like bread right and i'm all like the fuck is going on oh you know what there were nachos with that like that that's what i ended up eating nachos with that like warm cheese that you get at like queso yeah yeah so i ate that
Starting point is 00:44:32 that was my first pre-game meal and so after a couple weeks of that you're like okay we had it I mean, I knew we had it pretty good in the NHL, but it was definitely humbling. So at that point, you're just totally focused on where you are and enjoying the moment for what it is. But you know very well how good you had it back home. Right. And I guess sort of the last thing here, unless you guys have something else, is motivational speaking in your future. Just in talking now, we've just met 45 minutes ago. But it sounds like from that speech that you must have gave, I wish that was on video.
Starting point is 00:45:04 I would love to see that. Yeah, I don't know if it was. But also just listen to you here. It's like, there's, there seems to be so much there where you could, you could probably fire up a pretty quiet room. I, I don't know if like, I always, why, why would people want to hear from me? But when I do these types of things, people seem to be respond well to it because I don't read off of a page. I don't prepare. Don't prepare kids. Uh, I like to be natural and, uh, and what I am most proud of at the risk of getting serious for a minute. I love my story. I love the
Starting point is 00:45:36 underdog story of the kid that I wasn't a late bloomer I was the best player on my team growing up I was the best defense college defenseman I was a runner runner-up for Hobie Baker like I was one of the best college hockey players and I never got drafted and my story of sticking and believing in myself is real I've dealt with a lot of coaches I've dealt with a lot of people that told me I wasn't going to make it wasn't big enough wasn't this enough wasn't and I was just like really and it really i wish i could not impose i don't think that's the right word but like make people feel how i felt going through it which is just basically sticking and believing yourself and and and and i don't know so so again i talked to little kids i talked to you know so that would
Starting point is 00:46:25 have no swear words but um i i love the message of just believing in yourself and and finding a way through even the smallest crack that sounded weird too that's gonna be a click just you guys just gonna take title of the episode yeah right the smallest crack just find a little crack and just get right through there you go well listen all right it has been a real pleasure a real pleasure you guys so generous with your time and i just hope you know how much we appreciate it And I know the people watching this are going to be stunned with how great this is.
