Starting point is 00:01:55 Hello, everybody, and welcome to Wow, That Was Pretty Stupid with your host, Adam Wilde, Steve Angle, and Jesse Blake. Man, man, man. There sure are a lot of takes this morning. And by the way, today we're going to talk about the Leafs. We're going to talk about the Devils losing again, although it probably won't be a half an hour surgical jump into the Devils. We got to give Patrick Payne and Lucas Raymond their flowers.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Alex Texier, don't worry. We haven't forgot about you. French Olympic team is just thrilled right now. The French poke. Uh, but we got to start with the Ottawa senators who've made themselves the main character. And, uh, I'm going to read you this statement. Uh, and the statement for most people, this statement is the first time they've heard about this story, which is already a problem.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Our organization was extremely disappointed to read the completely fabricated and false stories that are spreading around social media about our hockey club. Linus as in Linus Allmark is away from our team for personal reasons and he has the entire organization support we asked that people request his respect excuse me his privacy but clearly that request was not heard by the lowest forms of trolls and sick people who scour the internet we are disgusted that outside forces are attempting to disrupt our hockey club this statement will put an end to the ridiculous speculation that has spread online and unfortunately the last line uh leads us into the first line of our segment which is no it won't well here here um i'm gonna
Starting point is 00:03:31 be me a person who does not know what this is and you read it okay you're the voice in my head okay okay so and go our organization was extremely disappointed to read the completely fabricated and false stories that are spreading around social media about our hockey club stop what rumors going around social media about your hockey club and it's the internet so everyone is equipped to go this one and they have the screen cap even though the account was deleted and now it's on twitter and now it's on reddit and here's the thing i saw the tweet so did i i'm chronically online yeah of course i saw the tweet but we weren't gonna talk about it we would never get on this show and be like hey did you see what did you see that one anonymous twitter account
Starting point is 00:04:29 these people exist and anyone who's ever been on the internet for five minutes know these people exist like by the way there's probably people right now who are listening to this and going hey where's jesse we haven't heard from him and b uh this statement is the only thing i know about this story i do not know what else this i don't even know what these guys are talking about i when i read it i was like let's see how big it is on twitter and i did my usual searches and whatever i was like oh five likes hasn't really taken off yeah and then i went to reddit i went to the send subreddit because stuff can really take off there there's fewer bots and it was present but everyone was like this is ridiculous and the overarching theme was do not post about
Starting point is 00:05:23 this ridiculous bullshit yes of course so it was there dude these people exist by the thousands the idea that you have to release a statement because every psycho with a twitter account or whatever can post whatever they want is asinine and it's mickey mouse and it has made lenis all life harder whatever it is that's going on yes like and and i want to say it should it should be the it's it's the given it's the prerequisite we shouldn't have to say hey that's a mean thing to put out there what the fuck like we shouldn't have to do that but there it is just in case if we spend our time policing all the mean things on the internet uh you're we die you're gonna waste your life and die eventually you're not gonna correct anything that's how this ends for
Starting point is 00:06:21 all of us uh and you're gonna have spent your life uh fighting a one versus a million war that you're never going to win last night on the stream first thing people asked me about with those rumors on in the chat and i said listen because the statement had already gone up nope it hadn't oh it hadn't and the statement went up midway through the second period and i i was like i'm not listen uh and you could go back and you could look at the footage it's up there i said i'm not talking about this this is players personal lives i i'm not even going to tell you what the rumors might have been it's not worth talking about like let's move on because and then and then i get a i get hayden in my ear uh midway through the second he's like hey i know the
Starting point is 00:07:03 games on but you're probably gonna need to read the statement the Sens just put out and so I read it I couldn't believe it was real and and what became so fascinating is you watch the chat and everybody in the chat wants to know immediately what the rumors are and like instantly they were like oh I didn't care before now I care and I get on the show yeah it went from being something with no credibility and ridiculous to oh my god the Sens talked about and the original Twitter account that was tweeting that i believe was made specifically to put these rumors out i don't think it had any other tweets uh based on what i saw it had existed for less than two hours so it's a twitter account that was created and a couple hours later a billion dollar hockey
Starting point is 00:07:45 franchise feels the need to comment on it which which you know also and somebody made this this comment in in our chat last night they said listen like if this wasn't true you don't need to address it because things get made made up all the time the fact that they felt the need to address it makes me feel and this is just one fan that there's some smoke and potentially some fire there it's not just one fan it's a billion of them and i screen capped a bunch of them like you you have to have a little bit of like social literacy and uh this reeks of having none of it and like i want to carve well i not i want to carve i think a lot of people's instincts are going to be to look at sen's pr and be like they have no idea what they're doing i assure you
Starting point is 00:08:36 that like i have every faith in the world that they do i we know the guy heading it up this came from miles above them it was emotional it was reactionary and it was absolutely the wrong thing to do and it made the lives of everyone that they were hoping to protect worse and more difficult it's a failure now a really really stupid thing to do one thing that that is pretty clear here jesse i don't know if you agree with this this doesn't feel like a steve i know steve steos attached his name to this you've seen steve steos in interviews does this sound like steve steos to you no like i think that's the next place to take it because i 100 agree with that it's not steve at all this comes from the man at the top and that's michael anlauer and today i after last
Starting point is 00:09:25 night i wake up today i'm just i'm disappointed and and sad for sense fans because michael anlauer buys the team and eugene had his many troubles with the team and ran that thing the way he did and we all know it was chaos and awful over there and they get this new owner who's supposed to take the sense to become a competent franchise yes they weren't before yep and everything's supposed to be trending in the right direction you have somebody who's really invested in the hockey and keeping in ottawa and really loves this team and over the course of the last few years of him owning this franchise all we've seen is that he's bad in a different way he's bad in the too gung-ho new pro sports owner way where they get too involved in their franchise and
Starting point is 00:10:11 they don't understand that you need to let the people who you employ to run the thing run the thing and these statements are what happens when the guy at the top who doesn't have a degree in pr starts making pr decisions and the statement came three or four hours after the initial post yeah that's emotion yeah it's it's pure emotion and it's emotion from the guy who owns it because that's the only person who would sign off on something like that egregious going out to the world and we saw it with the first round draft pick yeah i know how to get on gary betman's side and that's by kissing his rear end yes you get on his side by going behind yeah and michael and lauer hamilton might have a hockey team if they do puckered up baby if blackberry could get his
Starting point is 00:10:59 shit together and kiss gary betman hamilton might have an nhl team right hey you know what the short form for research in motion is rim anyway oh my god that's what they used to call themselves they call themselves rim oh so you read it before you watched it so you okay if you got a job there it was a rim anyway all right uh the auto he inherited this franchise where they screwed him on the sale yeah telling him that the this first round draft pick wasn't coming with the with the sale of the franchise and okay you got screwed on it but you gotta take your lumps because they let you into the club yeah that's the price of doing business and then you move on but all michael and lauer did was hammer that pick time and time again i have no idea why i inherited this right that was
Starting point is 00:11:43 the line and then trying to get it back through the media and that's not how you do things so we have evidence there that he's emotional dude and then we see things like this past summer where he literally clicked his heels while walking to the media here at the golf tournament for the ottawa senator just show the people the footage there's the owner i like that yeah but isn't this also the press conference where he started with where's so-and-so yes well i don't remember the reporter was it bruce kariak i can't remember where's so-and-so and he just starts a beef like right away like brother you do not need to do this what are you doing i just want you to tell me how many times you saw edward rogers walk up to a podium with uh the pr guy next to him click
Starting point is 00:12:30 his heel to the media and then start making a bunch of statements to everybody listen there are plenty of things i don't like about ed rogers but my favorite thing about him is i don't know what his voice sounds like exactly i have no idea what he sounds so it's not the clicking of the heels which is fun it's the it was the beat afterwards good pause right there that's yeah hell yeah it's the fact that i have this footage of him doing it yeah i don't want this i don't want this statement from james dolan telling us oh chris jury's great i love him and everything's going fine i don't need the owner to say anything to anybody because that's how we know they're too involved and then we get messes like this i'm sorry sense fans it looks like you got another
Starting point is 00:13:13 owner who is going to be chaos throughout his tenure can we learns his lesson can we talk about a term that I don't know if everyone is aware of called the Streisand effect. Yes. So Greg Wyshynski pointed this out and there were other Twitter accounts that pointed this out. As soon as the Sens released the statement, people were posting about the Streisand effect. The Streisand effect describes a situation in which a person or organization's attempts to suppress information leads to greater attention to the information than it would have received otherwise not surprisingly the term was named after singer barbara streisand now ironically i don't know why it's named after barbara streisand her house but her house yeah there was like a controversy
Starting point is 00:14:00 with her house and then she posted about it and everybody's like oh what's this controversy oh what's the controversy about your house like listen this got posted about it did start to spread people were going to talk about it and it was going to be out there but there are so many things that are on the internet that people know about that don't have any credibility like you couldn't bring this up uh in certain social circles and and expect to be taken seriously no right hey did you hear about oh no i didn't but like who said that and then you gotta go some random on the internet and then you sound like an idiot but like so we had heard it like i'm admitting that we had heard the rumor before it was posted online seeing the tweet yeah but we
Starting point is 00:14:55 would never i said that on the stream last night i said this has gone from a non-topic on the sdp to the number one well so it gets posted about by the sen's official account and now it is written about in the athletic 70 80 000 people whatever it is are going to hear it on here espn it was on the leafs broadcast last night with darren dreger it's i didn't see it but i understand matt cullen talked about it on the sen's broadcast last night so it's on it's on like mainstream print and then television i'm sure it's on radio within 20 minutes oh instance at the second it was posted i was like now everyone's going to talk about it was on the cj show today it was on 32 thoughts today was it previous number one story because they talked about it and it would have
Starting point is 00:15:45 gone away if they never said anything because it was ridiculous twitter we would have been like hey do you guys see that yeah that's crazy like we wouldn't have said it on the air we would have said it before the show people say all kinds of shit yep and here's and and it's messed up shit so let's and they shouldn't say it but the world's full of shitty people let's talk about let's we don't we know that part we totally know that part not everyone seems to apparently so here's here's what uh did a quick poll of some people that i know in hockey three different responses on the kind of guy michael here lebron i know i purely brendan and i said like give me some give me some descriptors on me lander for a fourth i'm trying to trade every leaf now
Starting point is 00:16:29 i think every leaf should make 15 i have 15 rival gms saying what they would give for brady kachuk no i i'm no i don't know uh no what i have is is just okay because again i don't believe this was steve stay house at all and i certainly don't believe this went through ian mendez and so i said so what what kind of guy is michael ann lauer and i got passionate i got devoted and I got hothead. Those are the three words I got back. Okay. I could be accused of all three of those things. But why do you hire people? You hire people to prevent you from making bad decisions because listen, Michael Anlauer is a genius at what he did to become a billionaire. He's a logistics guy, created one of the biggest shipping companies in the country, was able to buy 10% of
Starting point is 00:17:18 the Habs and then was able to buy the the Ottawa Senators outright he was very good at that but that's his lane yes Michael Lauer is not the general manager he is not the head of PR and he's not the number one center he hires people to do all those things and I don't see him jumping on the ice and at eight one loss going don't worry guys I got it eight two eight two excuse me don't worry guys Michael's here I'm gonna put my equipment on and score they signed a goalie mid game and we'll get to that now and that was like the third biggest thing that happened a goalie who couldn't make it through the preseason with the Leafs I still think he'll be fine he'll be fine he's got to get some time in the in the minors though although it's a lot different
Starting point is 00:17:59 in January than it is in I think if Reimer had been playing with the team this whole time it might be different January I don't know okay we're going back to Reimer in a second yeah hey can we just leave it for now sorry uh somebody brought up in the chat last night and i thought this was a good call hey what about the bedard perry stuff now if you remember back a couple years ago there was the rumor about so cory perry was had his contract canceled essentially by the chicago blackhawks for breach of material breach or more there was a morality clause in each of these and we all said but okay but like what and and a bunch of people on twitter well it started with like one dumb rumor it was about perry sleeping with bedard's mom yes which
Starting point is 00:18:46 was total bullshit and some idiot in chicago asked him about it bedard about it and they said so the person in the thing said hey uh what do you think about uh what do you think about that could it be the sense doing protecting that and i said it it sure could here's the thing though those rumors were like already being picked up by organizations that don't exactly have to be on on point with their information do you know what i'm saying uh there was already like there were jokes made by major influential people in the sports space about that instance this was one twitter account two hours on the like registered for two hours and and and so there's a bit of a differentiation point there now the other thing is again answering the question why so again
Starting point is 00:19:37 you're trying to you're trying to get out and and and support your players that's what Elliot Friedman said this morning he said and this kind of surprised me I'm not gonna lie he said if that happened to him he'd walk into the front office the next day and he said okay trade me I didn't sign up for this because his point is you know when you're a hockey player or when you're a professional athlete you sign up for wins and losses and uh if your family is involved and we still haven't even addressed what the rumors were because we i don't even really think we need to no um he said if my family was involved get me out of here and i think ottawa i think that uh i think i understand where elliot's coming from when he says that because his belief is
Starting point is 00:20:21 that's the senator standing up for their players but as you just said steve whatever bravado or or or protection they think that that statement might have given them I believe it's created a magnifying glass effect and or a Streisand effect and you know here's the thing in pro sports as much as I don't want to talk about your personal life and I said that on the air last night I have no interest in talking about these I wish I knew less about most stuff yeah yeah exactly like unless it's like here's a story about Austin Matthews dad and how he took him to practice and waited there all day so Austin can play hockey. Here's a heartwarming story. His mom's soup recipe. People are going to cheat on people. People are going to do bad things to
Starting point is 00:21:07 people in their personal life. People are going to do whatever they do. I don't want to know. Not interested. Don't care. I'm interested in, hey, the Winnipeg Jets dressing room for a few years there was pretty poisonous and there were a lot of rumors about that. I'm interested in that. Elias Pedersen and JT Miller going toe to toe. Whether that was a fist fight or a yelling match, it happened who knows we don't know i still don't know and that's an interaction between two nhl players and you're having an nhl in an nhl conversation yes i get what he's saying that these guys are saying that these guys only sign up for wins and losses but the reality of the situation is no they don't no they don't uh in every other sport when is my question i've never
Starting point is 00:21:48 seen a professional athlete's private life not be a big story yeah um and maybe that's what they know maybe they're saying i was just surprised to hear elliot say that because i was like well that's objectively not true that's not true at all no um we see this all the time uh and why would they go in to the senator's front office over one twitter account registered two hours ago and say get me out of here does that scream great environment in ottawa because if that because that to me and i don't i don't know i have no insight on that i've never heard anything bad but if that is what it's going to take for somebody to request to trade that's not exactly a ringing endorsement i i think well first of all that's an emotional reaction again uh i i just
Starting point is 00:22:39 think that is listen we all seem to agree and elliot even brought up people were like why did they release this statement they shouldn't have released this statement maybe that's just him trying to fish for some kind of reason for why a not brilliant thing happened that was objectively a bad decision the ottawa senators made yesterday and they did it when they were on the ice when they were i cannot wrap my head around that i can't wrap my head around that mid game you could have done it you could have done it today at the five o'clock news dump right on a friday we're just not done we're just not done it sleep on it i think that was the best thing just don't do it what was the score when it came out oh god who knows it would have been at least uh a couple
Starting point is 00:23:33 ahead for colorado because they they scored like the first three goals it was ugly yeah i mean it is colorado no yeah i know eight two loss by the way yeah um they did not show up on a night when they needed their team to be get together and do something and the goaltending issue in in ottawa is just disastrous these guys have phones in their locker rooms like they they knew mid-game that this had come out and i thought it was very interesting that during the game the statement comes out and you think like afterwards maybe a reporter will ask about it and that's not the case at all and no they were in denver was i was asked about it by uh either side of the media i assume the colorado media there just talk to the colorado but any traveling sends uh writers didn't
Starting point is 00:24:16 ask and well they will tomorrow my guess is uh before they hit record there was a little do not fucking ask me about this which you don't have to listen to but i don't they don't typically guys florida's in ottawa tomorrow night they will is in ottawa florida is in ottawa the senators will get asked about this yeah because i don't think the senators have a lot of traveling media to be honest not a lot of teams do uh no well yeah i mean the leafs don't even send their radio broadcast on the road that's what i'm saying that's the leafs so this is the the so like i guess where we go with this is they are going to be asked about this tomorrow and this is where you have put a grenade in your players lap because ian mendez and the pr staff
Starting point is 00:25:03 in ottawa from from everything we've heard our first rate and they're gonna have to if they have to say to these guys guys don't ask the players about it the reporters have the ability to say i kind of have to ask the players about it and i'm not sure whether you know your bruce gary acts your your julian mckenzie's your uh uh um local podcaster i always thought brent brent wallace right yeah i don't know who's gonna i don't know if they're gonna do it but it is a it's a thing that's going to be asked it's a thing that's going to be talked about i can guarantee you on tsn 1200 in ottawa today it's the only thing they're talking about there are far more salacious rumors out there absolutely all kinds of guys god man there's more salacious
Starting point is 00:25:51 shit in court documents steven that people have just forgotten about yeah like i think generally you leave it alone unless it's in the locker room or court yeah um i i again like not to repeat myself over and over again i cannot believe they did this they made it so so much worse and as jesse mentioned last night the goaltending situation just went from bad to worse actually here can i put a bow on it oh yeah well but yeah this statement is what makes me ask out of town oh yeah oh these guys have no idea what they're doing i want out that's that's i so i have the opposite opinion there um you know it's not i see the tweet i want out of town i see that the sends essentially stuffed the tweet into a megaphone and blasted it out into the entire
Starting point is 00:26:40 universe oh they they have no idea what they're doing they're not professional i want out go ahead uh both mad so guard and levy marilinen played last night multiple times uh multiple times being the key there yeah uh marilinen was pulled in favor of so guard uh and he allowed five goals on 16 shots i feel bad for mariline and man he looks so good last year he did he did he could be back next year this year has just been absolutely disastrous second time in three games he's been pulled if you go through his game logs this year it's three four starts in uh 16 games played where he's allowed two goals uh or more or just just two goals he has no start so far this season where he's allowed one goal or less that's which is
Starting point is 00:27:29 really bad if you look at the numbers it's three goals against three three three four four three three four three seven like it's just every single game he is swiss cheese and this isn't somebody you can start anymore but they're in a situation where their starting goaltender that they made a whole bunch of money for uh-huh is on leave for whatever reasons now that we all can talk about all of the reasons because the senators want us to and then they have no backup and then so now they're on hey let's try james reimer and you know laurent brossois was traded to the sharks yesterday i know a lot of sense fans are like man it'd be great to get him he's he'd only he's only played six games for the uh the rockford ice hogs this year he was very good before he got hurt yeah
Starting point is 00:28:13 but like it and actually he's been fine this year yeah you know it's like another like a connor ingram you just take a shot in the dark on that one uh and he's been yeah he started okay he's way and he's listen laurence got a 901 save percentage uh all right cool and the barracuda obviously don't have a lot of goaltending depth so he's going to start there but like i feel like the senator is probably i think since fans believe they would have been better off taking that shot rather than james reimer because at least briswa has been playing i think the assets it would a cost to acquire that goaltender is why they
Starting point is 00:28:48 didn't want to do or that the cap space maybe yeah it is it's a weird odd and I don't it's Ryan Ellis going the other way right yeah like I'm I'm trying to figure
Starting point is 00:28:56 out because there was obviously a lot of financial and incentive involved in that trade so I'm I'm trying to figure out what the sends could have done to make that work
Starting point is 00:29:06 similarly yeah I don't think you can compare it to the Reiner acquisition Reimer acquisition where it's just like hey we free a person and there's nothing that
Starting point is 00:29:14 has to go the other way i'm honestly like enough teams have struggled for enough of this season i'm surprised reimer wasn't signed uh by anybody i think he wasn't signed because he tried to make the leafs and he couldn't yeah yes but he played part of a pre-season game i can't remember you could see him out there i was there at training camp and i watched reimer's first time hitting the ice since whatever oh wait in a leaf's uniform and it was ugly yeah but like i said when they picked him up i'm like he had a really underratedly good season last year like on a team that was garbage but like you know what i'm saying is like you could do a lot worse like you have
Starting point is 00:30:00 could always do worse of course you could you could put me in there yeah yeah there you go i like how we both immediately went to that's the default yes steve like so they got hunter shepherd who they're just throwing in there well hunter shepherd doesn't really have much of an nhl track record his ahl numbers are great but like i could you know i could tell you a list of uh leaf guys who i saw in the ahl i'm like they're gonna be great oh no oh heavens um uh reimer has like an immediate nhl track record or a recent nhl track record of last season but it's january like if if they or anyone had done this in september or october i would have been a lot more supportive of yeah hey this could work oh freak man january that's that's tough and i think for them the idea
Starting point is 00:30:54 would more so be if they can ramp up rhyme or get them into some sort of playing ability quickly and then you get that long break for the olympics maybe okay okay okay he also gets a month here of just practice time but it's a month until then yeah it's still a month of like get him into some games and and try something so that tells me that lenis is not they they don't believe lenis will be back quick who knows the shame because he was in the building the other day and they talked about that yep yeah i don't think they know or he knows when he's coming back wow how leaf of them uh i think uh i think listen you got to do what you got to do uh i'm sure they've scoured the goaltending market and can't find anything like you almost wonder if they would have been like
Starting point is 00:31:39 man we should have taken a swing at georgiev you know what i mean like just somebody anybody but you think when you sign a goaltender for 8.25 for what is it seven years eight years you think oh we're good plus we got mariline in and oh we'll we'll be fine here this is this this part of the lineup is taken care of heading into the season i never would have second guessed this ends goaltending no it's kind of a good situation you have a goalie who you pay a lot of money to who you pay a lot of money to because he's been very good over the course of his career and a young guy who also looks like he's very good yeah great you should be good great i i looked at it i mean the guy lenis had just won a vesna like it's a great what two years ago yeah
Starting point is 00:32:22 like it was to me it was like oh that's a great deal that's great sure great you kept it under nine good for you hooray that's awesome oh okay he hasn't been very good okay well we'll lean a little bit more on the kid oh he's just as bad if not worse oh let's lean on uh mads can we get mads in the oh oh shit yeah like it just feels like it it kind of snuck up well think about how how i mean not to make it about the Leafs we are going to the Leafs next but think about how easily that could have been the Leafs and almost was right i mean they could have been anyone Caden Primo was awful here and then Dennis Hildeby could have been last year Dennis Hildeby oh he just happens to be this year Dennis Hildeby like i i kind of laugh sometimes when people
Starting point is 00:33:05 talk about like an organization's lack of goalie depth like if you get two injuries you're screwed everybody everybody pretty much what do you have an elite do you have an above average nhl goalie as your third stringer no probably no well then your bone we'll look at the light everyone's bone lightning with jonas johansson and he's their backup right yeah yeah and who's it after him i've no idea take your team okay all right now take out the top two goalies how you doing everybody except for carolina yes is in trouble do that for two months how you doing how how have your fortunes changed probably not for the better right now uh a little question to to to wrap it up with them um justin peters i believe it is is the uh sends
Starting point is 00:34:05 he's either the director of goaltending or their goaltending coach i've seen some sends fans talk about him um just because no goalie is performing well do you put anything into that or no not really no that's that seems silly is this just one of those seasons that's like i mean someone posted they're like uh if you need any more evidence that this season is stupid look at this and they showed me philip grubauer having one of the best save percentages in the nhl yeah i'm like all right you know so i guess none of us know anything you know if we're talking about a potential bra sua trade no no that doesn't even make sense i'm trying to figure out how the sends could have that's okay here yeah we don't have to that's their job yeah that's their job that's
Starting point is 00:34:51 their gig no like why is seattle trading him at this point i don't know no that's all right he's good now i'm out on the suns making the playoffs i think i think we should i i'm out i don't know are you actually fully out yeah yeah they're not a playoff team this year they're they're a mess they're trending sends fans like it was one year you have fun ride and this year is a step back i i still think i mean they could still go on a hot streak like the sabers they are i think the team is too good to be this bad but the goalies are part of your team and they don't they don't have them yeah no i haven't seen them play good enough hockey for any stretch of this season is andrew hammond still playing give him a call get him in there we need someone to go 21 and 2
Starting point is 00:35:39 or whatever sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my floor to repel down and clean all the windows but they never clean my windows oh and their way around on that is like well it's a patio window you can do that yourself and i'm like well hang on a second what if i don't want to i don't have the stuff because you gotta have that scraper thing and the and the washer thing chemicals you gotta have the right chemicals see what i'm saying that's why i used task rabbit and I employed a Tasker.

Starting point is 00:37:24 We want to tell you about something really special, the Little Native Hockey League. And it's a tournament March 15th to 19th. The Toronto Maple Leafs Indigenous Celebration Game is this weekend, January 10th. And if you've never heard of the little NHL, it was born in 1971 out of a painful reality, which is First Nation children were and youth were being shut out of tournaments because of anti-indigenous racism. Rather than accept the exclusion, a group of determined people came together to create a space for these kids to play, belong and shine. And from those humble beginnings, they started with 17 teams. There's now 270. Wow.
Starting point is 00:38:02 Which is pretty, pretty darn cool. So today it's much more than a hockey tournament. Obviously, it's a celebration of talent, but also resilience and unbreakable pride in the First Nations community. It's a testament to perseverance. And last year for the 2025 Little NHL Tournament, as we said, 270 teams, 707 games in four and a half days over March break. I do not envy whoever is in charge of planning. Your Excel work must be like top notch. I don't envy them, but I respect them.
Starting point is 00:38:34 Oh, yeah. Wow. So as the host First Nation, what Comic-Con unseated territory is looking to not only build awareness of the tournament, but elevate indigenous youth athletes and strengthen development pathways within Ontario. This year's theme is empowering girls and women. And obviously, we've got a link to it right now in the description of this episode. But you should check out the little NHL. I think it's pretty darn cool. uh as of this morning uh Jacob Quillen has been sent back to the Toronto Marlies because it looks like William Nylander is ready for a return wait so that's a good sign now let's talk about the Leafs and Flyers last night uh the Leafs have since the Mark Savard firing and I am putting that as a pivotal moment in their season claimed 14 of a possible 16 points so this 6-0-2 streak
Starting point is 00:39:23 began there that day man that's well the next day because they played on the 23rd that's crazy crazy um last night was all about scott lawton though and god i want to give this guy his flowers because i remember going in a trade deadline last year i was the first we got to go i don't i don't understand this why would you give a first round pick for this i didn't love it he came and i'm like well he's a leaf now and i'm going to support him first game was a little bit ugly when he was playing colorado remember we did that live show in london and uh and you know he he seemed to struggle to find his rhythm well they played him on the wing yeah which was like what are you doing and then he goes 19 and one in the face off hold on man hold on we're
Starting point is 00:40:02 building the story you jump for you why are you jumping the last night because i like to jump no it's not jump playoffs he's better this season everybody's raving about his training camp and this is the key everybody's raving the teammates are the coaches and you're like okay everybody But he's great in training camp. And then he gets a broken foot. Takes a puck off of it. And the Leafs are like, oh, my God, let's throw everything we had out the window. Domi, you're going in at center and we're going to let you get buried.
Starting point is 00:40:35 Of all the bad moves the Leafs have made this season, that's still one of the least explainable. Yeah. And I feel bad for Max because it it kind of turfed his season for the first six weeks because it wasn't working. He's on the wing now and he's downright adequate. it why did we ever not do that exactly but Scott Lawton comes back and he is a force and then he gets injured again remember he was there for the Seattle game they played one of them or was it Seattle or something else uh no Zdorov rocked him Zdorov rocked him and then they had just played their most complete game of the season next game Zdorov rocks him also knocks Matthews out of that
Starting point is 00:41:13 game too uh that was you know what I think that might have been the next game was that the next game was at home and home just crazy he's a monster but when scott lawton finally returns to the lineup he's paired with steven lorenz and from december 1st to now the leafs have the best penalty kill in the league and a lot of that is stetcher as well that their penalty kills improved a lot but the guy who is who is spearheading that it's lawton is scott lawton and matthews it takes a huge defensive and penalty killing burden off of matthews yep who we started talking about the deployment and what is berube doing here and what it's steve said she wanted to jump ahead let's do it what how many face-offs did scott lawton win last night 19 out of a possible 20
Starting point is 00:42:01 including a couple in overtime where they just sent him out there and said austin don't worry about it scott will win this and then immediately switch off which was a little odd to me because like Austin's pretty good he can play man yeah but but no no like Lawton oh Lawton can play yeah like okay yeah have him take the face off he doesn't need to come off though I agree with you why is it coming off I agree with you I don't know but maybe I shouldn't criticize uh their overtime deployment on account of they won so missing in that is a shorthanded goal by Scott Lott and the Leafs by the way I have to tell you I I was both teams I think played some pretty stingy defense i think if you were to look at both teams on paper the leafs are unequivocally
Starting point is 00:42:43 the more talented team uh i was really really impressed with the philadelphia flyers i think that is that's a team like i know flyers fans aren't gonna love maybe my characterization here that's a team without a real superstar zegras is a star in philly but he's a point of game player he's not a hundred point player right that's not a super yes yes yes i understand what you're saying And so Mishkov has that potential. Yeah. He's just got to show up to camp in shape next year. Well, it's hard to catch up midseason.
Starting point is 00:43:10 I got to be honest, as impressed as I was by the Flyers last night, I did not notice that kid a whole hell of a lot. No, no, exactly. And so what I have, I'm really kind of blown away by is a couple of things on the Flyers. There's no way they make that Zegers trade if they'd hung on to Tortorella, right? No chance. Oh, my God. and i imagine watching the flyers last year felt like hockey somebody trying to play hockey 20
Starting point is 00:43:35 years ago watching the flyers last night felt like a team that was ready prepared and what do they always say about easton count it's the motor right he's always got a motor he's always skating the entire flyers roster is that has that that motor they were stingy as hell on defense and were up one nothing up until that scott lotten goal they were up one nothing for like 35 minutes is crazy and you know it's funny like as good as the flyers were in that regard that was one of the least better defensive performances as well i liked uh berube after the game those little locker room videos they do he was like we didn't give him shit all night like he was he seemed pretty pleased with it i mean it's a two one win
Starting point is 00:44:20 it was any coach loves that it was low event hockey for some reason yeah um they don't like the seven fivers for some reason but there is and there was also the the interview after the game so easton cowan scores the game-winning goal claire hannah from tsn is interviewing easton cowan and i think it was lotten and riley were yelling at him down the hallway going hey you got to dance you should do it you should do your little dance riley was poking his head out yeah i guess riley who by the way adam listen he's had a horrible season we've given it to him a lot recently that was awesome in overtime oh yeah the flying no bring it across yes yeah oh my god i want more of that i'm cheering for this man that was so bury the one-timer with a wide open that thank
Starting point is 00:45:02 you jesse yes thank you thank you i get the puck was bouncing it was a little rocky when i was coming over to him bury it okay listen i'm not like a big equipment nerd is his stick made of paper like i think that's why he's missing a lot of these things because it's just the fun he's the muffin man oh my god he's the muffin man his shots at muffin no there are certain guys where i watch him and i'm like your stick looks weak not you you look fine the equipment you use looks like a rubber hose that was domey last year i wonder if he changes his stick remember i was like stop shooting you can't play with a uh pool noodle yeah it was like oh which we tried imagine playing nhl games like that what are you doing just yeah no he's absolutely right he's got a he's
Starting point is 00:45:47 that was a cool play in overtime though he's got to bury that but yeah no that was rockstar and and it was it was a what was amazing about the the uh tavaris play in overtime john tavaris plays that like a guy who knows exactly what rasmus ristolainen is Risto Leinen and Lawton got into it earlier because Risto lined him up pretty good and crushed him. And Lawton wasn't happy about it. Risto was on for both Leaf goals.
Starting point is 00:46:12 And, but what Tavares did, I almost said Tortorella, was he was like, I know Risto Leinen's going to commit to me. I know I'm going to draw him in and I'm just going to hold and hold and hold. And it took until he was about three or four feet away from the net.
Starting point is 00:46:28 And Risto Leinen, for whatever reasons, like, I'm just going to dive now. I need to know what Flyers fans think of Ristolainen now. They gave up far too much for him. I know he makes a lot, but it's been kind of a while since he was in the constant complaint category. Look at this. Like he gets, he gets him.
Starting point is 00:46:48 Why does he commit there? Why does he commit there? And look at Risto has no idea where Cowan is. None. Because when Tavares makes this play. So if we go forward a little bit here. watch risto does not shoulder check cowan one time why do you go down there you're not blocking a passing lane you're not even blocking a shoot i i think he's blocking a passing lane i don't
Starting point is 00:47:12 think you anticipate the guy stopping up and putting a pass between his legs like let's let's uh i mean tavares is great past yeah but let's dr strange this to another reality where um tavares does a no look pass between the legs it it misses cowan by six feet and it goes the other way and the flyers win and that would have been and you guys all saw this that would have been par for the course because the leafs had given up three or four terrible backhand passes in the intervening minutes before this right like olive reckman larson uh austin matthews austin did not have a good overtime but that oel uh pass early in overtime like you ever you ever see it before it happens didn't it lead to zegras's uh breakaway on hilda yeah the puck is still on his stick and
Starting point is 00:48:05 i'm like he's not gonna why no i thought that was the game but he'll to be saved he'll to be saved at bands i gotta say zegras's box office he's fun to watch he oh man he's a right like you can tell philly's gonna philly's his home i i had the wrong read on him i was like that's a flyer really that's a modern flyer yeah i yeah his face i could do it without it jess that's why he's great jess you're down at the rink one moment for the screen grab of morgan riley oh okay yeah look at this you never doubt his effort never once do you doubt his effort oh that's great play yeah oh great play holy moses that's cool um jesse you're down at the rink all the time should have gotten assist you talk to these guys you should have gotten this you didn't get
Starting point is 00:49:01 one jess what what's your you're trying to set up with that you should have gotten what i'm trying to set up no adam down at the rink what's your what's your read on scott lotten and his place in that dressing room everybody loves scott lawton he's he's more fun than he gives the media for sure like he's uh the prototypical glue guy they'll call him around there but yeah he's he's an energy guy in the locker room for sure i was talking about it on the stream last night i was like listen anybody at this point that claims to be a leaf fan that doesn't like scott lawton and and i hear hayden in my ear go they're score sheet watchers they're not watching the game and say Hayden's a wild fan and he's like,
Starting point is 00:49:45 and because every time I mentioned him, you get a couple of people in the stream going, yeah, but he's only got whatever, six goals, seven goals or something like that. I'm like, okay,
Starting point is 00:49:52 so you're not watching it. Okay. You've told me you're not watching the games regularly. I know that you're not. This guy is a dog. And what, what's been amazing about the Leafs this season in a really tough season is this is the best center depth I've ever seen them have.
Starting point is 00:50:06 And this guy is the fourth line center that they've been looking for for 10 years. i'd love to know what his what the leafs record is with lawton in the lineup i don't know how you look that up it has to be the best record of anyone on the team has to other than steve sullivan who is uh who has not lost in regulation yet uh but he's not in the lineup is he it's lawton or stetcher i i mean i i guess it's got to be lawton i i think yeah i think well i mean they've been what 106 point pace since stature was claimed something like that is it really yes it's high so here's 13 8 and 4 with lawton in the lineup 13 8 i am very surprised it's not better
Starting point is 00:50:53 but i mean uh they're not in a playoff spot and haven't been all year so any winning record of any kind uh is that's pretty good and he was in the lineup when they lost uh three straight to the caps nashville and dallas and then it was actually four of five games we lost that edmonton game before that in between a chicago win so he was in there for quite a bit of the losses watch it's like phil myers or something like he's like he has the best record or something like that the players yeah it's just dumb stat or whatever um no lot and you know why he's such a good fourth line center yeah he isn't well he isn't he's not a fourth line center even kind of and they don't use them like one right no they don't so i think most nights it's wah who i also really like because
Starting point is 00:51:44 he's also not a fourth line center like okay i'm not talking about the leafs right now i'm talking about these players individually so get them in a leafs uniform out of your head okay we know you can win a stanley cup with nick wah as a depth center because he's done it um you can win a stanley cup with scott lawton someone can it may not be the leafs let's be honest it probably isn't but someone can someone can 100 win a stanley people win a stanley cup every year with depth centers third and fourth line centers who play like scott lawton every single year we've not had that the depth person that can rise to the occasion on that level it's not happened so So, and I also think, by the way, Nick Waugh's look good.
Starting point is 00:52:38 That Nick Waugh line with Robertson is always creating something. Robertson loves Easton Cowan with all his heart. Really underrated bromance on that team. Yeah. Wasn't Robertson the first guy to jump on? Yes, he was. I was like, he loves him. Look at that.
Starting point is 00:52:56 So, here's a crazy question. Kneelander comes back. Coach Jesse, Coach Steve, where do you put him in the lineup? Cali Yarncrow comes out. okay that's the free space so who goes down then because Michele's been playing with Tavares and so who where does Michele go this is what I was trying to figure out and because you don't want to break up that third line they've been good right or do you I don't know I think Berube would be would jump at the opportunity to move Robertson around even after the great game he has he comes
Starting point is 00:53:29 back this game and he plays him 11 minutes like no matter how good Robertson is like Berube is is going to play him 10 to 14 minutes ish so if if he can move him down if he breaks up that third line and he'd be i think totally willing to do willing to do that so you put willie on the third line um no i'm just saying like if there's a piece you can move i think darn croak probably comes out and then they'll probably it won't just be like yarn croaks is out it'll be the rotation that they've had all season long where it's like maybe it'll be steven lorenz who gets scratched this game or maybe it's Robertson maybe he wants nice or Cowan to sit again um but I could I'll just see I think he's just gonna mess around with the lines as he always does um maybe one game Willie
Starting point is 00:54:11 will be on one line and next game he'll be somewhere else yeah I you can maybe move Cowan down to that fourth line with Lawton and Lorenz yeah yeah they've had some chemistry so and we've seen the wa um kneelander line have an effect like they've that's been one kneeling yeah that's been a third i remember when kneelander yeah i like that oh i like that was a thing for like two games dude and it wasn't on the left or the right whatever he's comfortable with i usually hate him on the left i would say the right because if you're moving cowan down to the yarncroft spot that's the right that's the free spot on the right side i like cali in that spot cali yonkers coming out so then there's a space for kneelander on the right in the third line
Starting point is 00:54:54 robertson is typically much better on the right so now you got robertson who's stuck on the left like is are we overthinking this and yes stick him with math yeah i don't know you're sticking very hard i wouldn't stick him with matthews no it would be it would be tavaris or wah and i liked the wah nylander thing because michelle's been very good yeah i think you leave that line alone also you don't need to play william nylander 20 minutes like maybe you shouldn't work him in well look at what happened with Chris Tanev right uh you know he comes back and as a player you instantly snap back into I'm a hundred percent and I've been skating the entire time and when you're in your mid-30s injuries like what happened to Tanev with his groin
Starting point is 00:55:36 uh they happen because you've missed a lot of time you come back and your body's like hey I'm not ramped up to this level so Nylander I'm not saying Nylander's in his 30s he's what 29 but he's a guy that what if you worked him in at 17 minutes to start and then got it up to 18 the next night he's coming off an injury like what if on paper he's on the fourth line and
Starting point is 00:55:59 well I don't think you put him with a lot in Lawrence do you no but like you just got to write down I mean really you just have to submit a lineup card yeah that's what I'm saying about the lineup thing is you have to just give something to the referees and then who cares and then you just yeah
Starting point is 00:56:15 yeah he ends up playing here a few games or a few shifts and here and we know brube enough in that that's what's gonna happen and then by the time the second period rolls around and they're up it's 40 to nothing on vancouver the lineup will be different and i hope uh this time off was good for him because i was saying some wild shit um i i look back at some of our social clips i was like i'd scratch him yeah well he might have been hurt well yeah you scratch hurt players though yeah well you should like you ought to yeah right there's no there's no levels to your opinion it was either 100 or zero yeah and you got to the 100 place with willie when was their last regulation loss without him it was not recent i'm just saying like so we need willie from the
Starting point is 00:57:06 beginning of the season that you add willie from the beginning of the season to this team oh my god all of a sudden we're cooking with gas i'm fascinated to see where he ends up uh okay other thing i want to bring up with the leafs okay uh so for a hot minute the toronto maple leaves were fourth in the division they're still fifth because buffalo won again and i wanted to take a quick snapshot of the division because i had a look at it last night and i was like man the Leafs are on fire they must have one of the best oh boy the Leafs have very annoying the fifth best record in their last 10 in their division and they are 6-2-2 let me run you through are you freaking kidding Sabres are 9-1-0 they're in fourth that's enough Lightning are 8-2-0
Starting point is 00:57:50 they've won eight straight the Wings are 7-2-1 and the Canadians at the top of the division are 7-1-2 get out of here all of a sudden the Atlantic division's the best in the sport what the hell stop it uh it's been a bizarre year in the atlantic division the Leafs are sitting right now if you go to the wild card they're a point out because the metropolitan is falling a little bit uh the Pittsburgh Penguins did win last night the Sabres won last night straight but the Washington Capitals have now fallen out give them some credit didn't they win last tell Dubas he's doing a great job winning six straight I I am and Eric Carlson scored for my fantasy team last night i was thrilled about it there you go but i i uh all the matters the washington capitals
Starting point is 00:58:34 kind of slipped a little bit the bruins have slipped a little bit the florida panthers have gotten one point out of a possible four uh in this uh little mini road trip they're gonna play the senators tomorrow night and we will go to new jersey oh we'll talk about new jersey later uh but the leafs are in tough they can do it for anybody that was doubting him yeah they can make here we zoom out and show every team in the eastern conference yeah yeah okay all those teams are in tough yeah yeah you're right you're right all those teams are in tough um although the spread's getting a little wider columbus at 43 and then toronto sitting on the outside looking in at 49 that's a bigger spread than six points a month ago well and look at the bottom of the
Starting point is 00:59:18 division one two three four five all five teams at the bottom have lost at least their most recent game yep yeah you're definitely right about the spread and january is every other night for most teams it's a buzzsaw so you gotta you gotta do it now two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcfwalk.ca trade ice skating at nathan phillips square for ice cubes in your umbrella drink let porter

Starting point is 01:01:55 elliot friedman on today's show said that at the deadline last year he believes that the st louis blues said if you want braden shen you're gonna give us count you're gonna give us danford you're going to give us somebody else possibly a pick probably a higher pick that was what was on the table but apparently the deal fell apart because the leafs weren't going to be able to get luke shen so braden shen wouldn't waive his deal and sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make uh yeah well because you would have had to pay for luke shen too yeah who i believe was a second and a fourth yes so you're giving up a second and a fourth and danford and cowan and another first or second or third maybe something like that it would have had to have been what are
Starting point is 01:02:38 you conjuring a first out of your ass like i don't have any i understand the desperation to want to do something because it was the last year with marner they did look good they were leading the division like i understand going all in at last year's deadline and if the leafs had started hot this year no one would have cared no but um but you know now that they look better it feels better uh i'm glad you explained why the shen deal would be tied to the brayden because because brayden didn't want to come here unless luke was here oh that's weird well he didn't want to be a leaf that bad which i'm okay with caveat you don't want to be a leaf don't be here like that's and i and i think if if it if i'm gm brad for living i say yeah probably probably best that you don't come
Starting point is 01:03:21 here then it's not a great caveat if that's what you're tied to i respect it but you're not a toronto maple leaf uh i don't think that's how it happened i'm sure it was just brayden chen said no my my also i'm just thinking like i'm assuming they don't do the lawton deal i don't think if they i don't even know if carlo gets done forget lawton right interesting because that's oh right because then you have your because you got to have mitten and verbanken back right uh-huh interesting so i'm listening i like braden shen a ton i think he's a great hockey player i i that's a i just don't think you could do that i think doug wilson would have been should have been gm of the year if he got that deal done doug armstrong armstrong excuse me uh what did i say
Starting point is 01:03:59 Oh, Doug Wilson was a GM, though. He sure at least I got it within the same profession. You did. The other thing I want to mention is Jonas Siegel put together an article today on trade paths to bolster the Leafs ailing blue line. Two weeks ago, this article would have been unthinkable. It's crazy. But because the Leafs all of a sudden have claimed 14 of 16 possible points and not have
Starting point is 01:04:23 not lost in regulation since before Christmas. Now we're talking trade. and so here are the three names he brings up okay and he calls it there's the triple there's the double and then there's the single sure right and i will just tell you right now boys i am on team do fucking nothing well they before you even read the names they ain't in the triple market they're not uh uh rasmus anderson no and it's so funny because jonas does such a great job breaking down why rasmus anderson might be good in the history with bradshaw living and then finishes it with uh the probability of them doesn't adding him doesn't feel so high because
Starting point is 01:05:01 they don't really have anything to give uh jonas i love you buddy what a waste of words rasmus anderson is a flame he will never be a leaf not as long as he's a flame even if the leafs did have a package the flames are not doing business with if rasmus anderson ever becomes a leaf it'll be threw another team justin falk was the double playing about 22 uh 22 minutes a night cost he said the blues might insist on a first round pick of some kind given that carlo got that with a year left on his deal because because um again justin falk's got a year left so you you know he's cost controlled whatever you're not in a position to trade a first this year yeah you're out of your mind he's also 34 in march no and i guess jonas's thing is well the leafs contention window is
Starting point is 01:05:45 closing anyway so why wouldn't you get these guys and i'm like we don't want to hasten that the cupboard is it's bare not great fellas yeah which is why i don't think you trade but the last guy and i might be into this is luke shen i saw that i'm kind of into it and i what does luke shen really cost you it's not a second and a fourth he's being scratched by the last place team in the league which is maybe why you shouldn't get them but uh like who's you're gonna tell me so luke shen to me has got to be an upgrade on philip my philip myers that's who he's replacing right yes which is why i'm okay with trying it and this time though i would say to luke if we're gonna do this one more time you can't sign in nashville this offseason you have
Starting point is 01:06:32 to stay here uh and i don't know that you take luke shen and play him with morgan riley the way you did three years ago because three years ago is an eternity it's a very long time but i do kind of like the idea of shen coming back staying here as a depth piece for maybe the next two seasons and then becoming like a defensive coach one thing that you know steve and jesse and i saw in san jose uh in spades was former players walking around teaching other players how to be great nhl players these remember it's a super young team couldn't believe how many nabokov uh uh thorton marlo reachy boyle who else is there uh like like all the studs basically from their from their big stanley cup run grier's the gm rears the gm exactly they're all there creating a great
Starting point is 01:07:19 culture and the toronto maple leafs are like oh you you don't play for us anymore get the hell out another guy i won't i want to see in a role like that is chris tannev when he's done oh sure like i love that chris tannev is here because i want chris tannev to take ben danford aside and go i'm gonna make you into meat and it's gonna take a few years i like seeing him in the locker room last night he was another guy made a cameo in that video he flew down he flew down that's i think that's a good sign isn't well the leafs used to not allow that that's right if you were injured you couldn't be around the team that's a lou thing and i want to say it stuck around but i'm not sure yeah so now they're asking for is what jake muzzin did
Starting point is 01:07:54 he's been a yes he's worked with the leafs ever since uh his retirement as their player development guy and i love one of their player development guys isn't that he's around isn't that the best like you want that i'm mad doobus stole spezza and uh and then you know like i don't know what it costs you like jonah says would a fifth or a sixth rounder get it done and at that point i'm like i don't care fifth or sixth rounder seeing even a single game in the nhl would be shocking it's rare that it happens at that point if the jets get something out of it good for them yeah good and listen the way the jets draft i don't think they will anyway uh so the luke shen thing makes sense but i want to go back to the ethos so the leafs are on a bit of a run right
Starting point is 01:08:38 now guys why would you make a trade at all this year because i don't see unless it's like something really low risk like a luke shen i don't really see the reasoning to do it this year because i feel like they're an incomplete team we know they are they're likable again they're more likable than they were last year to me but i do wonder about like throwing assets at a team that's not shown that they're at top of the division team do i gotta redo the lfr do nothing do i gotta redo it i mean you were nothing you were right they did do something and the something worked stature well well yeah and then savard yeah my bad whoops sorry it's been a long season um no not that stature didn't work but that was well after yeah well and i i would love to go
Starting point is 01:09:34 back and look at our stature segment because weren't we like really oh yeah i think everybody that's what's gonna write the ship oh shit boys i think we're in trouble um yeah no it's but context is important when you're in free fall in a season that is still very much redeemable yeah i think you need to do something this is why like we had a lot of debates um in various group chats about like you know uh if they rebuilt or retooled you know you recoup some assets and i'm like this it's right there you've been dog shit you've been as bad as you've been for a decade and you're like three points out i i don't think you can pull the chute yet and here they are they're still not in i do think that's worth mentioning but you're right there you are in prime
Starting point is 01:10:32 do nothing territory at the moment wow i i thank god you agree i was like holy shit i i thought that i'd get i thought i'd get both of you pushing back on me on this uh i think i asked last episode like if they should buy and both of you said no i don't think anybody looks at this team as like hey go out and sell your 2020 first round pick for something that may or may not help you make a mediocre playoff run like this isn't a team that should be buying if anything they should be selling like cali yarn croak who probably like we just talked about him in and out of the lineup there's somebody who's a ufa that's a very useful player for a team you can sell that asset i don't even know if i view that as selling like he's such a marginal player for this team but that's what
Starting point is 01:11:17 selling is yeah i guess you're you're selling i guess that's what luke shen would be to the jets exactly like you're selling a ufa who's not going to come back next year for some sort of asset to stock you just hold fort here we know this team is up and down and shaky who knows if the true team here is the team we saw from october through uh mark savard or post mark savard like that should be october through mark savard that's it's bc and ad you're absolutely right it's before it's bms or ams that's the least so we'll see post olympics whether they are the ams team and then i think you just kind of go about your business we've seen the mid we've seen them bad we've seen them good um we still have time to figure out which one of those three things they
Starting point is 01:12:08 are now if they don't lose a game from here till march 7th trade deadline sure they go 20 and oh yeah maybe you buy ryan o'reilly maybe you do but right now if you're asking the question no just sit down and be cool sit on your hands Brad you're living yeah Steve change your LFR title it's do not do nothing yeah Brad Brad no no it's just Brad
Starting point is 01:12:35 instead of Brad Brad okay I'm looking at CJ's trade board which is trade board 3.0 already somebody from this list got traded the day it came out and that's Laurent Brassois but just under him if there
Starting point is 01:12:52 was a defenseman I would want the Leafs to trade for it's Mario Ferraro his name is on there he's a UFA that's a guy that's a buy that I think well or you wait till he gets to be a UFA I'd be shocked if the Sharks allowed him to do that but I love Mario Ferraro and I think he'd be a great fit on this the Sharks are in business like that trade they made yesterday I think it's more financial than anything but it's I mean it gives kind of technically a buy yeah they got goalie depth traded a player who is retired yep they exchanged a couple prospects and i don't know if there were picks involved yeah they sent a fourth to the blackhawks it's a it's a four million dollar contract isn't it
Starting point is 01:13:35 or five or something it's a big contract it's a financial move with a sprinkle of soft buy right like why why do you go out and get goalie depth oh you you have every intention of winning games if you're tanking again you don't do that you're just like man we oh no we're losing so what no you want to win and it's it's a busy league like there's a lot of teams but it's probably gone unnoticed that as good as askerov has been at the beginning of the season he's been as bad as that now that's how as bad he's been now thank you over the last 10 games he has not been good and the same percentage on the season has dropped to an 893 and if you look at his recent record it's just three goals given up every single game and three goals or more every single game so they
Starting point is 01:14:21 are clearly seeing if we actually want to be in a wild card hunt here we might need goalie depth because the one guy who we thought we had at the beginning of season might be a little shaky because he's young and then it'll take time to get acclimatized to all this playing time in the nhl i remember when we were uh kind of analyzing the sharks before the season began and we we looked at basically their whole decor is unsigned and you know you would think that sets you up well as a seller but i saw that and i was like that's tearing it down to the bones and i don't think you're that anymore in san jose like you tear it down to the the studs uh you're getting ready to be bad for at least the next three years yeah bad and no will smith is here william macklin is here you
Starting point is 01:15:12 got the wills misa misa and for god's sakes macklin celebrini um dickinson some other guys in there too but they're they're really um they're really forward heavy yeah well that's what i mean i think they do need to well nick letty's name is on this list too and he's also a shark but he's expiring and you know his career is probably not there all would have been it for anybody who doesn't know the full details of the deal it's the sharks sending jake furlong ryan ellis the ghost of ryan ellis's contract yeah and a fourth round pick to the blackhawks in exchange for brossois alan nolan and uh sorry nolan allen and a seventh round pick in 2028 from the blackhawks The only way I really see the Leafs making a defense trade
Starting point is 01:16:00 is if Morgan Rielly's going the other way. You know what I mean? Yeah, I just don't. Like, I just don't see it. I don't see it. Now, and I know there's been some chatter about this, but I think the biggest do nothing and hold the fort for Bradshaw Living is have three goalies on your roster if Anthony Stallers is ready.
Starting point is 01:16:18 Yeah, totally agree. What do you call it, an own rental? Hildeby's been so good. Like, there's no universe you can trade him. He does not require waivers still. So if you want to send down the Marlies, you don't even have to carry three goalies if you don't have to. But I think it'd be advantageous to this team to carry the three of them and still allow Hildeby to play a little. Because Anthony Stallers, when he comes back, if he comes back this season, I don't think he'd be trusted to play every single day like how he was because of how many injuries he has.
Starting point is 01:16:47 Joseph Wall can't be trusted. And Hildeby has been their best goaltender this season. So while he doesn't require waivers, though, doesn't it make sense to have him play games instead of risking losing again? no no jesse's saying keep them in the rotation i would say oh caroline has done a little bit why not three goalies eventually probably send them down just because you gotta get into enough games but like at first but at first at first when stallers comes back play stallers a little i don't hate that keep hill to be there you can send down a forward like i would just i would play three i think i think it'd be interesting for them to do jess i'm with you and i think
Starting point is 01:17:18 that's going to become more normal i don't think it's outrageous for teams to have like why do you carry eight defensemen the the more important position is goaltending so if you got three guys run them and especially for joseph wall and anthony stallers who are noted made of glass players and i'm glad to see wall bad back injury luck but yep i'm being kind you said the same things in different words yes and i nicer one thing i do want to say is uh dennis hill to be stat lines hilarious this guy's played 16 games um do a safe percentage first save percentage is 916 great goalie holy shit goals against average is pretty good not 267 great goalie holy shit four five and four it's bullshit they have done my man dennis so dirty they have during that
Starting point is 01:18:09 stretch where they were just mid as hell the least were he was consistently the best player on the ice yeah nobody in front of him rewarded him with anything you'd see his record is oh yeah he's got a 978 and a one five and ass record what the no they finally no and even last night they went to one in overtime yep and he was score goals in front of dennis held to be he was one of the best players they had last night that went unmentioned during the game segment but held to be was fantastic and i think if you're trading anybody it's one of the other two but i think you hold on to all three for now through this trade deadline for sure.
Starting point is 01:18:48 And why not have them in the next season too? You can't trade Stollers for anything right now. Teams don't run. What are we doing? His extension hasn't even kicked in yet and he's played 10 games this year? Joseph Wall is too young
Starting point is 01:19:04 and he's too cost controlled. You're not doing that. I'm not trading Joseph Wall. Just keep them. Have seven defensemen with the team. Who cares? What's the big deal? I do not understand that yeah uh and and listen if somebody goes down well you can call someone else up that doesn't require the not waivers thing for hill to be this season makes it easy it's a good solution you can keep all three goalies that's not something you do at this trade deadline to go buy for a team
Starting point is 01:19:27 that might not deserve an asset no to go on some sort of run okay so we're agreeing you're you're happy if the leafs stand pat but the best case scenario is hey they get luke shen back he better i don't i don't even know if that's best case i think we're all just happy with hey stay put yeah you're right i would like luke shen though i if they get another injury on the back end well if they get another injury on the back and they might just be fucked i don't know i don't know it's like carlo coming back it's it's funny like every time someone goes down you're like please someone send help and then someone comes back but then someone else someone else gets injured by the way just hope you at least break looking like jake mccabe will be back early next week maybe not saturday
Starting point is 01:20:08 but early next week great chicken suit for the soul love that uh i want to talk about this i i didn't have this in my my lineup this way i wanted to go to texier's hat trick in a second but i i since we're on the trade board i've seen over the course of the show that it's been reported out of vancouver and i checked with rick dolly while on this while while we've been on the air that the vancouver canucks tried to give evander cane back to the oilers what he's on cj's trade board and what rick said to me essentially is that he had a couple sources uh say that he's like he's i'm still trying to get confirmation but he's like a couple people told me that they did try to trade him back to the oilers because the oilers need more punch up front and the canucks are desperate
Starting point is 01:20:50 to move off of king uh and the oilers are desperate to move off of manjapani and i wonder if they entertain a frederick thing oh that'd be well because manjapani has been a healthy scratch nobody the Canucks are not taking no NHL you never freaking know no NHL team should employ Trent Frederick and help the Edmonton Oilers in that situation watching doesn't deserve it lose a fight yesterday I was like no that's that is a disaster contract that was not that was not the guy that I thought they were getting like I when they signed the deal I was like here's why it might end up being okay whoops that's not the Trent Frederick that used to eat the Leafs alive i that injury might be lingering like maybe score nearly 20 goals back-to-back years while being
Starting point is 01:21:36 like a terror yeah no that's uh not the same guy no i again i wonder if they need another summer for him to fully recoup and then he'll be back and what if stan bowman is not the greatest at his job he's not you know i could have told you that before what if stan bowman had a good run with generational hall of fame talent who he did not draft jesse he did not put into his organization and then since then has been ass what if that's the case doesn't value goaltending at all uh yeah yeah listen uh each and every time stan bowman's gotten a job and it's twice he has gotten a lamborghini that's been warming up in the garage for 10 minutes already the keys are in the ignition the car is on all he has to do is press gas and you know he had kane and tase and seabrook
Starting point is 01:22:25 and Keith and then he brought in Corey Crawford because Auntie Namby was remember Auntie Namby won them the first cup I don't even know if he did I don't know if he brought him in but he was there for it signed him to the extension but it was also understand Bowman is that where Panarin was traded for sod
Starting point is 01:22:40 and the more I say that the more the years go on the more ridiculous that sounds like he did have to do some finagling with those teams like they ended up they lost Bufflin they lost lad for Stig bowling yeah but that's what happens that's called a salary gap that is what happens um uh cory crawford was
Starting point is 01:23:00 what oh my god rolled he was drafted in 2003 well there you go yeah that long predates uh stan bowman yeah this is a i'm just so unimpressed with his tenure as edmonton oilers gm uh so if you're the edmonton oilers gm jesse what do you get evander kane back it worked here before he's got a year left no i haven't seen evander kane play good hockey of the season the canucks had remember when they got him and everybody's like why did they do that and then they had to trade off the roster because they got him and now like i mean and the jake to brusque thing is not working all right we took aim at stan bowman patrick alvin well man when that management group took over everybody's like man they're geniuses patrick alvin patrick alvin and who's the there's the
Starting point is 01:23:50 AGM, who was Lefrenier's agent. Oh, Emily Castonguay? Castonguay. I think it is. I thought it was Desjardins. Is it? Might be Castonguay. Okay. Anyway, that group is not looking hot right now. That
Starting point is 01:24:06 group's not looking good, and I feel like we gotta have a conversation. I know Canucks fans are already having it. It is Emily Castonguay. I'm stupid. Where do they go from here? You brought in Evander Kane to be a difference maker, and you tried to give him back to the team that traded him to you you made room for this player is uh andrew manjapani gonna complete
Starting point is 01:24:26 the uh western canadian road trip now he might like maybe it's maybe it's him for kane i i i think the oilers getting evander kane back makes more sense than the canucks keeping them if that yeah oh yeah for sure i'm just not sure that they're gonna do it maybe caps part of it but yeah you're right manjapani would have to go the other way it's very hockey hey you're a person i know that's the requirement that's it two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research.

Starting point is 01:25:49 Scotiabank. You're richer than you think. Last night, the Montreal Canadiens beat up on the Florida Panthers 6-2. They are first in the division. And the guy who was bought out by the St. Louis Blues less than two months ago, Alex Texier, gets a hat trick. He is a Olympian, by the way, for Team France, and he is the only current NHL or on that roster. Belmar is also on that roster, but he's not playing in North America right now. So I have to say this, too.
Starting point is 01:26:24 I did kind of find it funny that Marchand poor Marchand was not good to go after that Bobby McMahon sort of mix up. Well, so I saw some Habs fans. They wanted him in this game because of the Matheson hit. do you think that they do you think he was afraid uh naked and afraid oh wow no i think he got hurt yeah he did he did i know i'm kidding um this uh this montreal team starting to pour it on huh dude so text texier just to talk about him one assist in eight games with the blues 14 points in 22 games with the Habs um that window uh I think might have broke off it might just be permanently open the young guys on their roster and the guys who aren't even there yet
Starting point is 01:27:19 they're gonna think of what Demidov will be in three seasons dude they're they're top of the atlantic division right now and they're going to be there for a long time oliver capon and looks like he's pretty good uh hage isn't even friggin there yeah rheinbacher hasn't played isn't even there yeah uh the uh get some saves which fowler might give you oh my god i'm not sure what you do to stop that kachuk is back in practicing for the panthers we know that i think cj said on first up the other day that he thinks Barkov will play a game at least before the end of the season. Nobody's worried about the Panthers,
Starting point is 01:27:58 but Jesse and Steve, when's it time to worry about the Panthers? Is Kachuk able to come back and turn this around? Marchand's had a great year. Always. Why would you ever not worry about them? What do you... No, no, I mean like worry about, are they...
Starting point is 01:28:13 Oh, being not good? Yeah. No, no. Oh, in that way. Yeah. Worry for the Panthers. No, no, I'm not concerned. no first of all i will actively celebrate their downfall but like what are we talking about i might buy a cake and eat it here on the show by myself and it just says lol in the middle of it um and at the end of the day they still have their two cups right uh so who gives a shit but um until they're mathematically eliminated they are a uh favorite to come out of the east
Starting point is 01:28:48 they're the panthers what are we doing here yeah they almost missed a couple years ago knocked off the best regular season team ever went to the cup final and then they won back-to-back cups what are we doing okay and they've done they're in the mix not on a playoff spot right now but they were recently without kachuk or barkov what are we doing fellas ladies what are we doing so last night montreal was just hey it happens you're missing a lot of guys you lose games yeah and montreal's good but at some point you're gonna need to ottawa florida's gonna be interesting get there and stay there i mean that'll be a very interesting hockey two teams who need a win more than their next breath like yeah that's i want to see the kachuks fight
Starting point is 01:29:38 i don't think that's gonna happen i don't know if you're still not playing i don't know if he's gonna even play damn it um that'd be a great comeback i think what you saw with montreal was the case of they weren't getting any saves and this team was in there all along they've been the they are the number one team in terms of points accumulated since december 10th so that's a solid month it's january 9th that is one month they have 23 points in that time 10 2 and 3 they're tied with the wild who also have uh 23 points 10 2 and 3 identical records since uh december 10th so montreal canadians have been playing like the best team in national hockey league since they have gotten a couple saves and last night sam montembeau stopped a
Starting point is 01:30:19 bunch of shots and that was something he wasn't doing from october through december so them just getting competent goaltending and then all of the scoring that they have coming alive and the defenseman looking like solid guys in the back end like st louis got them playing nice hockey and they're finally getting saves fowler for two and two with a 912 uh if montabow's giving you saves if dobish returns to form who has an incredible record regardless of his form yep yeah folks uh that truck ain't slowing down that's uh that's a good team and they're going to be good for a long time you can hear the pain in my voice they're they're back they're good oh my god they're back why do you guys hate lane hudson i don't he's box office
Starting point is 01:31:07 i do like watching him you left him off of your olympic roster and your did i left jason robertson off my olympic roster because i knew garen wouldn't pick him and left him off the did not make the olympic roster the snub roster okay if cole caulfield is not making the american roster for the reasons he was left off lane hudson is certainly not making yeah he didn't even get an honorable mention and he's not going to because i hate your team so far this season has 44 points in 44 games after last year's stellar rookie campaign where he had 66 and 82 he is pacing even better what a player yeah he is unreal that nine million but was it a nine million dollar extension he signed that's gonna be the fucking biggest steal that's
Starting point is 01:31:54 gonna be crazy yeah like the way jack hughes contract looks right now and not jack i'm talking not quinn i'm talking jack jack makes 7.7.85 or something that's already like the steal of the year it's gonna be crazy when lane hudson's dad does another weird podcast from his car with the stanley cup in the past that's gonna be crazy that bill guaven yeah lane he beats bill guaven's team in the final there you go that's his contract is 8.85 yeah dude that's gonna be go to hell yeah no no and we ran marner out of time no that's right it's right we ran marner out of time uh hey um the new jersey devils in uh consecutive games have had luke hughes booed every time he touched the puck and then they lose was it nine nothing yep and then last night they lost again this time
Starting point is 01:32:50 to the Pittsburgh Penguins who've been very good. Very, very good. Hanging around that wildcard spot all season long. But the, this, we thought last game, which they ended up losing 9-0,
Starting point is 01:33:03 that that would be their statement game. Hey, don't boo our guy. We're coming back. And you know what? The metrics for them were actually quite positive. Wow. I wanted to tell,
Starting point is 01:33:16 I wanted to grab Sheldon Keefe and say a little bit of that was score effects yeah well you were down three nothing very early and your goalie sucked and you powered on the offense because you were down so much are you about to show his post game from yesterday because yeah i want to play a little i wanted to give the man adam was setting up the oh sorry yeah you kind of joke i'm so bad at this i i just i'm sorry this is my first time on a show i'm so bad it's like november 1st and steve's like what are we opening those christmas presents anyway so you ever find one late uh occasionally yeah occasionally my dad um like we used to keep
Starting point is 01:33:56 uh all the presents in this closet next to my dad's drum set that he would keep all his extra drum shit in and a present like fell between oh was it yours yeah and i got to open it in april oh sick all right yeah that's after your birthday too oh yeah that's sick extra bonus it was pretty sick um we also forgot to point out last game a lot of people in the comments wrote about it patrick wall was at the other end of the ice when markstrom was let it left in there for nine goals which is a beautiful nhl history so now markstrom's going to the abs to win a cup uh so so we keep waiting for the for the goes uh for the statement game for the devils to go no you can't do this to us jake allen made 25 saves the devils by the way luke hughes did score but the devils have been
Starting point is 01:34:46 outscored 16 to 2 in their three consecutive losses this is this is about as low as it gets no it isn't because they might have their fate handed to them this weekend yeah you think it can't get lower and then they just lose the next game they have two games coming up well two days off they do not play saturday they play sunday and monday on the road before their next home game on wednesday oh who are they playing they have the jets oh you gotta win that game that's what you think this is the thing it would be way better if they if it was like avalanche wild excusable losses you lose to the jets and then the next day you have the wild oh that's tough wild on the second half of a back-to-back stuff so the jets is where you make up your mind
Starting point is 01:35:43 and the wild are the ones who are the wild at home finish you are the wild at home or the devils at home the jets are at home the wilder at home so in new jersey in winnipeg in uh no no no in winnipeg it's a road trip for the devil okay it would have been so much cooler if it was quinn he was in new jersey so much cooler a lot of people like i think greg washinsky a few other people they pointed out like a couple games ago you're on the road here your next home game is wednesday they cannot lose the next two games especially and then take the home ice on wednesday having not done anything you can't do it the fans will not stand for it now jesse wants to play and i think you're right steve jesse wants to play the sheldon keith thing and here's the thing about
Starting point is 01:36:33 sheldon keith the one thing he was born and bred in toronto with is an inability to read the room when things are going poorly i love sheldon i didn't expect you to just take a dig at the last game last game he's like oh actually i thought we played well remember they lost nine nothing oh there's some things we did well blah blah that is the most brendan shanahan kyle dubas sheldon keith thing i've ever heard it was uh it was going back to yeah actually you guys don't know anything cody cc's been great here definitely a top line defenseman for us i think he just wanted to get out of that weird room i'm curious because i have not seen this how sheldon reads or does not read the room on this one defense of sheldon keith you can't light into your players
Starting point is 01:37:19 when they lose nine nothing it doesn't help anything everyone knows their shit they know the scoreboard they know how they played that's not a case where you unload and do a sheldon keefie le thing i'm calling out mitch marner and then i gotta retract it you could just say yeah we didn't play great no but you lose a game like four you don't have to say you played well you lose a game four three that you should have won while you're doing the interviews post game it's sinking in that you lost i think it's sunk in sometime around first intermission so he had the second shot of the game that markstrom let in yeah like when he realized he lost he he had hours to process that loss before getting in front of a microphone that's why he didn't seem
Starting point is 01:38:02 that worked up yeah all right so here's here's the post game last night obviously you don't get the result here and you said it before it's not a lack of effort or a lack of trying from your group just curious what your assessment is of this one here i thought for parts of it um you know the rest parts that you like um but once we got settled into the game in the first period i thought we were quite good i mean we didn't uh didn't give up a shot on goal in the last 11 minutes of the first period and had some point blank opportunities so our inability to execute on those chances obviously is you know makes us come out of the period down one yet uh still you know obviously like a lot about our game at that point in time.
Starting point is 01:38:45 Liked how we started the second period. And then you kind of see the, you know, the power play there kind of sucks the life out of our game. You know, not obviously the power play itself and its inability to come through, but to give up, you know, to come out of the power play with a breakaway and now down 2-0, that stung. And you could feel that on the bench.
Starting point is 01:39:09 Thought it kind of compromised the rest of our second period, unfortunately. it's it's interesting no you go ahead go ahead my response to that to sheldon would be you have a team that's mentally weak and that screams to me a lot of what was happening in toronto uh i don't we don't have to draw the parallels there but no i think we should this matters but i think we've seen time and time again steve i don't know if you're going there but i think you've pointed it out well on how mentally weak the devils are what i was going to point out is it's i think we tend to look at the power play as a okay what did you do on the game as a whole because i'm looking at it i'm like oh luke hughes scored oh it was on the power play
Starting point is 01:39:52 and he's giving it to the power play that's odd but it's uh it can help carry your momentum how good or bad it is whether you score or not and and apparently it was so bad to start the second period that he thought it killed them and i mean that's that was the game you go into the third period down three nothing yeah you can win probably not and you're dead and i think some of this also falls heavy on tom fitzgerald for i admit i don't know if it's confirmed but the rumors are when the quinn hughes drama was going on they were looking to acquire him he went and asked a couple players to waive no move clauses and they didn't or they did and then he couldn't get the deal done whether it's one or the other i think the results are they don't trust their locker room right now in
Starting point is 01:40:48 their organization and i think a lot of players there might be unhappy in new jersey uh when you're unhappy these things happen where you fold very easily on the ice because you're not willing to fight for the other guys on your bench to support what jesse said for each said today on 32 thoughts it is very clear to me that the whole quinn hughes situation damaged their internal workings business got out as an out in the public no trade clauses used things like that and i don't know how you fix that everyone they were not ready for business when business came to them they thought this was a next year thing not a this year thing yo if the business is true i freaking hate that video i hate that so much jesse does a really good impression of that too
Starting point is 01:41:29 you left your mom's in the hood i freaking hate it i hate it so much who taught you to because you're old yes it is um i'm her age what are you talking about the devils sorry what are you responding to i don't remember um oh yeah uh no one like uh we we've talked a lot about um like the goaltending and they're soft and well how about they also don't score so Jack Hughes that's a tough combo yeah it's not great Jack Hughes is a hair
Starting point is 01:42:02 under a point a game where did he go he is still somehow fourth on the team in scoring even though he's only played 26 games so he has 25 points in 26 games Jesper Bratt is the leading scorer on the Devils
Starting point is 01:42:18 with 33 points in 44 games Nico Heischer has 32 points in 44 games their leading goal scorer is Timo Meier with 12. What do we like about the Devils, right? Like every team has, almost every team in the league, even the bad ones, they got stuff they do well. Yep.
Starting point is 01:42:40 Or they got parts of their lineup where you're like, yeah, you know, you're probably going to beat them, but if these guys get behind you enough times, you're going to lose games. what am i what is anyone afraid of with the new jersey devils um do you have the job security clip i can play it if you want if you give me a second i i admire i felt bad for sheldon but i admired that it was asked all right because like the devils are in talk about everyone territory right i didn't i didn't feel like his answer provided anything he was he was asked the
Starting point is 01:43:20 question hey are you worried about your job security yeah we don't have to play and he went into a answer about like hey we're not playing well i know we're not playing well and that sort of thing yeah and he's like well i can't do anything about that exactly and it's true which is i i feel like he gave a very good response with like my job security that's out of my hands yeah like i can't worry about something that's not in my control which i think was a fair answer but like Sheldon Keefe wasn't out there asking guys to waive their no trades exactly or their no moves or whatever if if if he lost the locker room because of that or if they are not playing for each other because of that that's not Sheldon Keefe's fault at all that's Tom
Starting point is 01:43:58 Fitzgerald's fault you know we we talked about the sends and and perception and you do something and uh it's obviously not a good organizational decision and does it shake a player's faith in a team if you're a devil um and you're like kovacevich can't play because they can't figure out the cap situation how do you let that happen i am waiting for that to drop hey that's the leafs also had that problem a few years ago yeah none of us like remember they couldn't bring nizen and they had to get an emergency goaltender yeah remember that right before the 2023 playoffs and like with 10 games should that be allowed well it was them definitely fudging the rules but but i don't even care if it should be allowed it's bad management oh yes i'm i'm just backing
Starting point is 01:44:51 what you're saying now here's why i've been here before here's why we forgave it they made the playoffs by a country mile and then they ended up doing okay i think that was that was they made the second round yeah they signed nice so that was the year they they finally won a freaking series the i mean the devils are awful yeah they what do they do well and shouldn't be there's too much talent they absolutely do i had them i don't remember if i had them winning the division i thought they were going to be in the mix it's carolina disrespect let's be honest but i mean you're it's not just where they are um you know this was sort of what went into our leafs dread at the beginning of the year okay so the leafs have taken a step back we're we're
Starting point is 01:45:37 concerned about that but uh-oh are the sends taking a step forward we now know they're not are the habs taking a step forward they are yes are the red wings taking a step forward yes are the sabers taking a step forward i don't know if they're gonna end up making it but definitively yes look at the devils the penguins are not dead as it turns out the flyers are all of a sudden a little b in your body uh sure are if they keep playing like that they're gonna make it and i mean the caps are still in the mix they're struggling but they're still in the mix carolina is still very much on top you're in shit you're in a lot of trouble here man i yeah yeah well we'll see how this weekend goes but that that winnipeg new jersey game is going to
Starting point is 01:46:29 be a cannot miss game on i don't care if you're a fan like if you're not a fan of either of those teams try to watch some of that game on sunday and that's going to be a good game it's just like florida ottawa it's two teams who need a win more than they need their next breath uh jesse i emailed you something uh and i'd like you to bring it up because our good friend mr christopher johnston is in milan today yes uh and he's got actual footage of the arena and i think you know we saw the footage uh earlier this week about how it looks and there it is right there that looks like an arena to me oh wow that looks way better than the video we saw the neutral zone is obviously shorter we knew that yeah um but they've accepted that hey there's seats it i don't know it looks
Starting point is 01:47:14 it looks good remember when people were like the olympics are gonna happen well bill daly didn't help the olympics are gonna be canceled guys play it in north america when does bill daly about no he doesn't help this is why you don't ask him but this was always gonna get done it just got done on a tight timeline and it looks like a pretty good arena to me they're not playing today no and they guys well they got a month to figure they have they do have test events that They're happening this week and they may be playing today. No, they are. They're doing a test game today.
Starting point is 01:47:46 Is it today? Yeah, I will tell you this. It's a full like slate of days of games. They're running like a little tournament. That's crazy. I said that and they are literally playing. I did not know that. Wow.
Starting point is 01:47:57 That's why CJ is there. Watch the test event. Dressing rooms are not done yet. No benches even. All right, but they can figure that out. You can do that in a few days. Are there any former coyotes at the Olympics? I'm sure there are.
Starting point is 01:48:07 That was the first thing I saw. I was like, the NHL isn't allowed to talk shit about this. That's what I find so funny. That's what I find so funny is the NHL got on the double IHF and obviously the Milan games shit about this. The NHL PA, like Ron Hage has been out there like, we're going to protect the players. Not ready.
Starting point is 01:48:26 We're just going to cancel the term, blah, blah, blah. I'm like, you guys let real NHL players play in that arena for two seasons with the Coyotes. Clayton Keller's going to show up like, what's the big deal? oh he's like this is an upgrade yeah like and listen let's be honest it's not like the delta center's great there's a reason they're putting like 20 50 20 to 30 million dollars in there uh they gotta fix it it's it's better than what the coyotes thing has oh is that utah yeah sorry like that look on my face was me trying to be like which one's that's utah yeah and listen the
Starting point is 01:48:57 coyotes are the earth sorry the coyotes the mammoth are the first ones who admit their arena is not perfect for what they're doing that's why they're upgrading it also for the olympics in four years but for i just have found this whole thing like it's almost like everybody wants it to fail because it's hilarious if it's if it looks like shit the but it's not actually hilarious because what we really want is a great tournament yes the wrong measurements did make me go oh also i'm looking at that i'm going there's enough space to extend that ice what the hell guys yeah i thought that was odd too they built the ice i know it's yeah i know so it's gonna do it oh listen there's a lot of things odd about this and there are going to be a lot of things
Starting point is 01:49:37 not ideal about this but stop rooting against the tournament happening it's happening yeah the nhl certainly set the tone for rooting against the tournament happening and they made it they made it sound like well we just simply won't go well because the nhl isn't in the business of making hockey better the nhl is in the business of making the nhl look better um it's a business enterprise it's not a sports league so i think the nhl deserves some of the blame but i think our colleagues in the media also deserve some of the blame for it's a good click especially adam it's a good click on a headline if it looks like an olympic the premier olympic event uh for the games coming up might not happen yeah and i feel like if there's worry about an arena it's
Starting point is 01:50:22 not done it's an easy headline to get a lot of clicks on hey the construction is not done and like i said through this entire thing it's probably just gonna get done it's gonna be done we're gonna play the games and that's what's gonna happen and that's what it looks like it's gonna happen based on the ice being done and there being seats and everything's fine so i think when you see all these things and there's a lot of fear-mongering about the arena not being built usually it comes down to the simple answer is that they'll do it because the olympics and they'll get it done i don't think we would have got the rosters you know what i mean like if there was legit worry yeah yeah if there was legit worry the conversation would have been different we'd know by now buddy
Starting point is 01:51:00 if there was if there was legit worry they would have held the tournament elsewhere this whole idea that it's like well we just won't hold the trip fuck off fuck off you're not going to hold the tournament after all that all right nhl after all this you're not going to send the players and you're just going to take a two and a half week break and there's going to be no hockey oh okay yeah great i don't believe any of that bullshit but jesse you were on this from the beginning you said it's gonna get it's gonna get done uh and it did two and five canadians will hear the words you have cancer that's why every step and dollar raised matters on september 19th join thousands in toronto for the princess margaret cancer foundation walk challenge yourself
Starting point is 01:51:42 friends and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research together we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer register today at pmcf walk.ca uh now last night in detroit patrick kane scored two he got his 500th goal uh on the second and lucas raymond now has over 300 career points the detroit red wings as i mentioned earlier in the show are on fire absolutely torching it um what do you think this year is the big difference the vibes are good right man um they've gotten not spectacular goaltending but like pretty consistent moritz cider looks like a norris candidate um noritz cider noritz cider this is probably the best hockey dylan larkin's ever played alex de brinkett is playing like the guy
Starting point is 01:52:34 they're paying him to be uh lucas raymond's getting even better patrick kane has returned to being in the neighborhood of a point of game player instead of just like an adequate veteran with some hands um like the emergence of younger guys simon evanson axel sandin palika emmet finney i mean there's a lot of teams around the league you can look at and go man not a whole lot is going right for them just about everything is going right for the detroit red wings just about everything like have they suffered a major injury not that i can remember um okay have they suffered two definitely not have they suffered three definitely not they suffered four you look around the league and there's plenty of teams that have the good teams the bad teams the you
Starting point is 01:53:27 know guys uh with nagging stuff are they on goalie three are they on goalie four you know there's they're a well-constructed team i gotta say that is emerging uh earlier than i thought they were going to and also everything is going their way that's gonna sound like i'm implying they're lucky it's all right to be lucky you're allowed to be lucky i think younger teams are more prone to be lucky because by lucky i mean you're not old and busted and hurt all the time um things are going well for them steve eisenman is a genius i've always said this question regarding patrick kane is he the greatest american skater of all time yes i have right now argument up the all-time points leaders for american skaters brett hall is number
Starting point is 01:54:23 one one thousand three hundred and ninety one points if it's a skating contest it's definitely not brett hall 741 goals mike medano second in points all time 1374 points and 561 goals and Patrick Kane sits in third in American-born skaters with points, 1,369 points, 500 career goals. Is he the best ever? I think the most complete player is Medano. Well, Brett Hull was born in Belleville. I just want to throw that out there. I know he represented America.
Starting point is 01:54:59 He's only listed as an American because the Canadian team didn't take him in the world. Yeah, but I feel like he's become American enough that he's considered American, right? Well, he considers himself American. so i'll give it to him i'll give it to him do we x brett hall because he was born in canada no some people are gonna bring that up no and he was raised in canada and wanted to play for canada and canada didn't want him so he's like i'm an american now i feel like that like let's call it what it is i feel like that's fascinating for the conversation does he count yes he counts whole best goal scorer probably best single season um he scored i think was it no it was 86 i think
Starting point is 01:55:37 Yeah, crazy. He scored a shitload of goals. Isn't that the second highest ever? Gretzky had 92. Yes, I think so. And it's also the best by adjusted goals, Adam. Oh, my favorite. Best single season adjusted goals in NHL history.
Starting point is 01:55:52 Serve to score a meter. You know what I saw the other day for adjusted goals? Austin Matthews still trails Sundin if you adjust goals for era. Wow. He had 69. not in a season in the all-time leafs lead oh i was like holy shit sundine topped out at like 40 all-time leafs goals leaders in terms of adjusted for era austin was still behind sunday yeah that's because nobody's every game in sunday and zero was like negative one to zero what if they kept
Starting point is 01:56:25 the record book by adjusted goals is the steve dangle record book uh it would be bought by five nerds and no one else yeah the thing about scoring is it wouldn't be a successful you have to do it yeah right and no disrespect sunday was amazing he was in an era where if you got a point a game you were the highest paid player in the nhl oh my god like 82 points in 82 games was unthinkable that's i always point to paul korea's career as like a as like a fringe um borderline hall of famer but he had 989 points in 989 games in an era where not a human scored mario lemieux that was mario lemieux yarmulke that was pretty much it yep um where are we going oh oh patrick kane top americans all time now hull has how many cups two detroit and he had at least one in detroit
Starting point is 01:57:23 i can check that yeah detroit did he have the calgary one though no i can tell he was traded right before that uh um two times stanley cup winner in uh yeah two times stanley cup winner there you go dallas and detroit oh doubt i'm an idiot he scored the cup winning goal yeah i think the most decorated is patrick kane by far well because he has cups and also well mvp trophies oh yeah right but medano scoring titles medano for me was the most like complete player does that make sense i loved mike medano maybe maybe it's those three i actually think it's between medano and kane and i think medano you don't even put hall there i think i think hall did one thing but he hall wasn't real good hall wasn't he did it real good but hall wasn't out
Starting point is 01:58:14 they're like killing penalties and you know winning you know important face-offs and things like that right like it's not i don't disregard hull's career at all we're talking about the greatest of the greatest of the greatest but if you're asking me best player if you're asking me best goal scorer it's easy best player medano's numbers also come down because he played in an era no one scored him like if if you go well wait a sec he played with hull yeah hull's career started earlier though there's some guys who are uh uh they played in like the late 80s early 90s and then into the late 90s yeah they weren't the same sport yeah even sort of and medano was a center
Starting point is 01:58:55 so many of the best players of all time had a robin you know and like i don't you can call kane batman and taves robin or what vice versa vice versa like lemieux won on some insane penguins teams gretzky won on some insane oilers teams i kind of look at medano and i was like his squads weren't nearly as star star i mean he did have but he had freaking brett hall on it uh he did medano hall new and dyke letting in zuboff sidor letting in is one of the most underrated players of his year one of the best penalty killers of all time damn uh he won he's like the he's the last letting in i think is the last guy to win the selkie trophy and not be a center isn't he i don't know if he's the most recent
Starting point is 01:59:55 but he was the remember this so then like so i'm going medano hall new and dyke letting in Zubov, Sador, Langenbrenner, Verbeek. That was a that's a pretty friggin good team. I hear this might be an exhausting way to do this conversation, but list of individual trophies for Mike Medano. No, no, no list is done. So, you know, you're talking about a guy who guys who have won scoring titles, guys who have won MVPs,
Starting point is 02:00:26 guys versus hasn't won an individual trophy. okay then it's patrick kane it might be there you go i want to shout out or first of all uh will austin matthews pass him he's got he has to win in terms of greatness not has to win yes that's no you said yes when i said well i think you meant like in points yeah i mean like in terms of when we're the greatest american nhler of all time austin's got a lot to do yeah right got a lot to do okay um second thing i want to shout out jonathan e who wrote in about the era adjusted goals jonathan wrote austin matthews and phil kessel are tied for era adjusted goals that's crazy matthews is also 130 goals behind sundeen in this metric wow so jonathan sent the
Starting point is 02:01:15 link link to hockey reference where they have the era adjusted goals and you can see there austin matthews sits 64th all time in era adjusted goals with 472 phil kessel is actually at 473 at 63 and if you scroll up you'll see sundine at 21st 23rd all time with 599 error adjusted goals do they have a per game average jess uh no not this is the sorting right now you could probably do it it's one of the quick calculations holy shit i think one of the fascinating things is sydney crosby sits seventh all time at 735 ov is at 1032 ahead of gordie howe at 925 and steven Even Stamkos is ninth all time at 690 era adjusted goals. Because the early 2010s when Stamkos was at his best were very low scoring.
Starting point is 02:02:07 I just want to say, too, that the reason Sundin's ahead of Matthews on this is that's why I asked for a per game average, because Sundin played has played three or four hundred more games just with the Leafs. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Right. Oh, right. Their careers aren't the same way. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:02:23 And he also played for Quebec for four or five seasons before that. Yeah, so we're not acting like Austin's done. Yeah, okay. Matt's is done, and Austin has a lot more to go. But for the air-adjusted goals, yeah, they haven't played as much time. I think that's very clear. So I think the air-adjusted goal is very interesting there. So I want to bring that up for you, Jonathan.
Starting point is 02:02:43 Any good stuff? Let me, like, so the dead puck era, I don't know what the exact metric is on it. Are we going to do this? What? are we going to do deadpaw care shit again what are we going that's that's we're already in the middle of talking about what are you talking about this is the topic of conversation jesse why did you open this wormhole oh you're a dick you brought up patrick haynes scored 500 you are a penis how dare you um no so i go from 96 97 yes 95 96 was still sort of high scoring 96 97
Starting point is 02:03:16 up until the lockout so that's 0304 I'm doing oh my god the list of 50 goal seasons is 14 that's not a lot 14
Starting point is 02:03:32 from there might have been more over the last two seasons yeah that weird was it 23 or 24 season where there was like six guys eight guys who scored like 55 goals it was crazy multiple guys hit 60 one year yeah or several years i think i think didn't pasta knock hit 60 the same year matthews did
Starting point is 02:03:51 how about this during that time frame no one scored 60 not a single person beret hit 59 and 58 they had to change the rules though because it was so boring yeah it was why they changed the rules so as silly as the error adjusted stuff is it provides a little bit of context on that like hockey's changed greatly over the last 120 years between 96 97 and 0304 the list of 100 point seasons 11 11 no one scored that's why Sundin is so high
Starting point is 02:04:23 that era because that's those were his best years as a leaf no one scored we have to go here yes I do I want to talk more let's go through some more individual sorry one thing that we didn't get in yes Barry cocking yummy didn't make Finland and is now being
Starting point is 02:04:40 traded by the hurricane somewhere they want to move in any thoughts yikes yeah i feel bad for the guy um he's still a millionaire so that's pretty cool um it's pretty cool to be a millionaire but like is it i don't even know would it be i would love to know sorry i've read i don't know personal experience or nothing but um we yeah we thought this kid was gonna be the truth man this is somebody who has been brought up on our show like a lot over the last every time as long as we've been doing the show because of all the drama that happened with
Starting point is 02:05:18 montreal and the offer sheet in carolina and everything and we thought like wow also canadians fans were a little obnoxious when he came you were don't don't you start with me you you had people going screw this matthews guy i'll take cock and emmy thanks yo what that straight up happened and there were montreal writers from the montreal gazette saying yeah that's their job um that's their job to do that apparently was offered to la for philip to know and if carolina had pulled that off i'd have been like high five well done yeah yeah there's no this is the third overall pick from 2018 has never really been able to find his way um in the nhl at all he signed the massive deal on the offer sheet and he's been making 4.8 million dollars 4.82 million dollars
Starting point is 02:06:06 and I don't know if anybody's taking that deal. 25 games played so far this season with two goals and four assists. He's not good. The ultimate Bergevin-era pick. Let's pick a guy in the top three that's got bottom six potential. Yo.
Starting point is 02:06:20 That is such a Bergevin-ass pick. Oh, my God. So it was Darlene. And yo, look what's happened in L.A. since Bergevin got there. Oh, no, now he's in Buffalo. Get ready, Buffalo. You're next.
Starting point is 02:06:30 Darlene, Andrei Svechnikov, Yusperi Kokuniemi, who was fourth? I have no idea. Brady Kachuk. oh wow who was seven you know what he had probably had too much personality who was seventh uh i have no idea quinn hughes oh who was 10th oh no no no no don't do this don't do this evan bouchard oh my god now but no adoption was 12th and they have him now but i would say montreal came out fine with that they did don waddell is the one who made the mistake on cock and yummy yeah like he's the
Starting point is 02:07:02 one who made the offer sheet and signed the giant deal it was because that's a very good point what am i doing no you're right all was like okay we're not gonna match no you're right is it not a revenge rfa signing anyway it was because it's because montreal signed svechnikov right to an rfa i don't know they offered svechnikov a huge deal oh oh it was oh right and and and tom dunham was pissed about it and he's like well i'm gonna take your guy yeah they didn't expect montreal not to match because aho stayed on i'm pretty sure because remember it was like that one year super high ceiling it was like a really expensive contract they get cockney emmy on a one year six million dollars yeah at the time which is crazy the offer sheet to aho people were upset
Starting point is 02:07:44 about because like habs fans i remember were upset about because um it was never not going to be matched yeah it wasn't a high enough offer but then dundon was pissed about it apparently the so the story goes and then they revenge greg washinsky in september 17th 2021 who the hell is that carolina sebastian ajo says hurricanes is trolling of montreal canadians with yes yes barry cocky emmy signing bonus pretty funny um ajo signed a restricted free agent offer sheet with the canadians for five years and 42 million dollars which the hurricanes quickly matched so that's what happened before and then last month is when the steel at the time when the steel happened back in 2021 carolina turned the tables and signed montreal restricted free agent is very
Starting point is 02:08:29 cocky i mean to a one-year 6.1 million dollar offer sheet which the canadians opted not to match the signing bonus on cocking enemies contract was 20 dollars aha where's number 20 with the hurricanes the reference was a was hard to miss that's funny i like that yeah but it's funny and then you did this and now you want to trade him for nothing and you can't make the olympic roster don't like okay you trolled us ha ha ha we won we're the montreal canadians you are saddled with cocky yemi well and like the hurricanes like this is really good seasons recently and the habs have had some really bad ones i know who i'd rather be right now yep this was funny at the time it's not funny now what was the compensation again for the habs because like
Starting point is 02:09:15 they got draft picks in return and they would have picked guys i'll can i'll have to look it and they've picked holy shit they've picked really well man crazy like the discussions like on tsn the other day they're like uh who on canada's world junior team would you rather build around and like they had mckenna in the conversation but they said age like man yeah they're gonna be good for a long time so oh the canadians got a first round pick in 2022 and a third-round pick in 2022 for that Kaki Emi signing. Great. Let's figure out who they selected with those picks.
Starting point is 02:09:56 Because they could have traded those picks. Yeah. Are we doing a trade tree on the fly right now? An offer sheet tree, which is so much harder. Philip Messar. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Messar around and find out. That was the 22 draft pick.
Starting point is 02:10:15 Go to bed. and then the third round pick it would be adam engstrom i believe oh okay yeah okay i'm just i'm just trying to guess which ones were there if they didn't move them but was he not included in the dobson trade i don't know maybe i'm wrong was he he was i don't even know i don't know that's even better anyways they got like i would don't mind that well you probably need a little bit of a trade tree to figure out like who actually won in the end but i think right now not signing cocky yemi makes the canadians the winner that's where i sit on that wow based on who he has become which is a six point player in 25 games there's maddie maddie what did you say i said
Starting point is 02:10:57 i think i could do better than that oh boy maddie would be in the checking role i think on a third line oh Yeah, no, 100%. Yeah. Anyways, I want to get that in. I like that. Okay, now we got to wrap up, right? Well, there's the wrap-up sound.
