the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
let's go i have some trivia for you what is it i'm gonna pick a random date out of the air okay
give it to us random date out of the air give it to us right now december 11 2025 okay december 11
yeah i said random date big day big big day for no reason other than who leads the nhl
in goals since december 11th 2025 in goals
you got to think about what was happening around that time i'm gonna say i'm gonna go with
this is maybe stupid zach hyman's had an unreal amount of goals in a very not
huge amount of time is that your answer yes okay so you're locking that in jesse
cole caulfield oh wow you guys got two and three on the list ah so really cool caulfield 28 games
uh and he has sorry 28 games she's 41 games uh 28 goals is he third or second uh he i don't know
why he's listed as third because he's played less games but he's according to stat music's third
the second one is zach hyman the first one is stephen stamkos yeah 40 goals buddy on the
or close to 40 goals on the season i believe and what did i say last show
now's the time to trade him now's the time to trade him fellas this isn't your window but he's
still a good player right right now's the time at the draft you gotta trade him uh the nashville
predators since december 11th are 23 15 and 5 a roughly 97 point pace do you think having the
best goal scorer in the league over that time helps i think it helps all three teams actually
and it's kind of funny because edmonton's not been all that great but zach hyman has and i
know they won last night but three playoff teams three play three playoff teams exactly adam what
was the date you gave december 11th uh so technically steve and i were correct oh i did
say that i didn't say that because they all share 28 yeah and cole coffins played two less games so
i should be the most correct well stat you're a bum stat muse said has him in three and so does
the nhl so fuck him you know what you know what nhl has him in three i think no what does the
nhl record say you're i think this is you not trying to give credit to the habs yeah oh yep
i think you hate frank of all the people of nashville know me and love me and they know
that i ride or die for them even if i think their gm has made some silly decisions in the last few
years right the people of edmonton know that i will be doing the oilers series like i have done
many times over the last three years streaming wise this this uh this spring you know that i'm
going to be doing the edmonton oilers vegas golden knight series okay i'm going to be following
edmonton all the way back to the stanley cup final like i had the last two years whatever adam but
what i'm telling you lane hudson over kale mccarr i've always said this i agree i've always said
what i'm saying to you is both stat news and the nhl record book are saying steven stamkos in fact
leads the nhl and you know why because he's the oldest and that's harder to do fuck your games
played man steven stamkos is like 10 years older than those two guys i'm interested right you know
what i'm buying what yourself that should be a tie break in and of itself all right these guys are in
the prime of their lives stephen stamp coast is like a year younger than i am how do you think
36 i believe yeah i'm 37 yeah for like five still 37 whatever he's a 1990 baby yeah well
still 37 you're clinging you're clinging you're just clinging yo i'm actually okay getting older
because jesse's as jesse has always said i was born like 50 so oh no you're you're about to
enter your prime inching towards my prime here yeah but anyway continue uh oh i need to hear
stephen stamkos get into a car has he grown all right yep yeah i need to know if you make a sound
getting up or sitting down it's harder to be the best goal scorer in the league i think that's fair
cole caulfield and his well-lubricated joints can get out of here you all stamkos has been working
out with gary roberts for like 15 years yeah i don't know if you guys have seen that video of
him like doesn't he like um uh what is it when you uh squats he does squat oh the squat but like the
but it's like a thousand the one with the grips the hex bar or whatever yeah i don't know what
that thing yeah anyway it's what i use at the gym i just don't know what it's called the he had like
i think he had like six or seven hundred pounds on it or something like it's an insane thing in
his 20s i believe it that's he was probably jumping too yeah i probably on one foot uh the
preds are in the playoffs guys as of today the kings the kraken and the jets are somehow in it
uh but the jets aren't in it well every time they get close they start losing games yeah it's true
they're not um man that jonathan tay's experiment did not work out no nobody wants to talk about
isn't that the most obvious thing ever what do you mean the guy who hadn't played in a very long
time getting an unbelievably huge deal to be second line center not working out yeah i mean
probably could have called that one i think that's i think listen i think it's a great story that he
signed there and that sort of thing but i do that's the only reason it wasn't more heavily
criticized at the time yeah is we were rooting for it to work because it was a good story it
was never a good idea 37 years old yeah it was always a great story it was never a good idea
yeah absolutely now the predators are in the kings also won last night so they kept pace
okay so they've got both have played 72 games preds with 77 points kings with 76 uh the goal
differentials are actually kind of the same too uh uh why did i say the predators won last night
they did not uh negative 22 for the preds negative 23 for the kings this is gonna be a tight race
tight race the devils are doing that thing where you get really hot when you're a million games
out yeah and jack uses scoring great goals and that all is meaningless if the devils were in
the western western conference they would be tied with the kings right now that's so nuts that's so
nuts if the maple leafs the leafs are four points back of forget forget a playoff spot they're four
points back of vegas uh the maple leaves would be uh two points back of a playoff spot four points
back of the first wild card come on it's insane that's you know and i i you know i i think it's
worth asking the question gentlemen because it's clear on the west that there's three great teams
and everybody else right colorado dallas minnesota some people are saying utah i'm not ready to say
that yet because utah's got to do it first right they're good they're good they're not great yet
but i think they're going to be yes colorado dallas minnesota 106 points 97 points 94 points
that's crazy is it possible not that they are not great but they are also playing mostly western
conference teams sometimes you get a bit of uh hey we're harvesting we're farming points from
these bumps it's hard to be better than the vast majority of your conference i'm not and i'm not
taking that away yeah but the vast majority of the conference of the bottom seven teams
six of them are from the west right but what i'm i guess what i'm saying is i'm not grading them on
a curve okay you know what i mean because they also got to go through each other that's true
Yeah, but that's only two other teams.
Was that?
That's only two teams versus 16, right?
That's two of the 16 or 15 that you play
because you're the 16th team.
It's hard.
Jesse, do you say harvesting points
or do you say, ah, they're great?
I don't agree with that.
I think the way you look at the West
is that there's the three good teams
and then a middle tier that you could say
is just the Oilers,
or if you want to include Anaheim there as well,
then then you have that middle tier would you put utah in there no so i think it's those two teams
and then you have this secondary tier where maybe you have anaheim and where it's like anaheim and
utah and then you have just hey they're going to be out if they make it and that's nashville and
and uh the kings one i agree with you but i would put an edit on it the oilers should be in a tier
called the oilers yeah so that's what i'm saying about that other tier if you don't want to put
the anaheim ducks in there then you just have an outlier of the oilers tier where it's like they
could really be good or nothing they're they're one of those uh super mario boxes that you drive
through during mario kart and it could be anything no honestly it could be a banana peel it could be
a blue shell you have no idea you have no idea we are going to the oilers and golden knights next
because they played last night so i think that's worth talking about but the first thing i do want
to mention just on the preds thing is that this morning about an hour ago darren drager said that
The St. Louis Blues front office is changing.
Oh, and we all know Doug Armstrong's been rumored to go to the Leafs.
That's why you'll be interested to know that Pete Shirelli is leaving.
Pete Shirelli and Kevin Maxwell.
So Kevin Maxwell is a candidate.
Sorry, he's going to go to New York Rangers in a management role.
God bless him.
Good luck.
And Peter Shirelli is one of the guys the Predators have already interviewed, and he's leaving the club to, quote, pursue other opportunities.
Now, LeBron retweeted this and said, my sense of the Preds executive search is that they are not feeling pushed by any deadline.
They've cast a wide net, spoken to 15 people, and it'll be it'll take as long as it takes until they get the hires right.
So if outgoing general manager Barry Trotz needs to run the June draft, so be it.
But obviously a hire could happen before.
So basically what he's saying is anything can happen.
But Shirely is not a lock for Nashville at this point.
keith this this is the rest of you are allowed to watch this message is just for keith pelly
oh no don't you fucking dare don't you dare he's going to no yep no it's gonna happen no
uh no now going to the my feedback one of the most important games last night which is a first
round preview let's just call it what it is the Oilers and Golden Knights first I want to ask
Jesse and Steve what is the headline about this game on nhl.com today I'm doing NHL headlines
in reverse mostly because I saw it so I thought I thought I'd throw it at you guys oil thrill
okay oil through what's the like oil spill oh but I will thrill okay Jesse do you have something for
me uh the boosh bomb that's it is about evan bouchard yeah because he scored so narrow it
down it is bouchard uh i don't i don't know he's a fair made tom boosh he's a god evan bouchard is
a god and it's a big hollywood movie that failed what the the headline is evan almighty evan
almighty remember bruce almighty and then they had the did that fail it did fail i remember that
movie yeah it was bad oh that was the one that wasn't bruce oh my that was the one oh which
should have been good it should have been good yeah but it was bad anyway okay uh i thought that
was a really smart headline i'm like good for them that's great i love nhl headlines that's okay uh
so listen we've been talking about the golden knights a little bit this week and obviously
we know that they lost in overtime yesterday just to kind of follow up on it let's talk about
this season and why this is so important because this is the first season in their history
with 40 plus losses an incredible run well that's that's incredible what a run in their entire
season or in their entire history that's nine years they've never had that as an expansion
that's incredible yeah this will be the first season where vegas finishes with more losses
than wins this season uh 41 losses so far uh the previous year 35 they had a 37 a 31 a 39
to 16 which was the shortened year in 2020 32 39 and 31 and i'm talking losses as in losses and
then overtime losses combined this is a a crazy one and mitch marner uh has a point uh in his last
six one assist jack eichel doesn't have a power play goal in the year on the year i know we talked
about this a lot last episode so i'm not going to totally hyper focus on the nights we already did
it but i do think it's kind of worth that's a big thing to cross and i again the the closer we get
to the playoffs and when we're talking about like odds for you know our playoff trees and that sort
of thing last night i know it went to overtime i still think the oilers are like like i don't
think i don't think last night gave me any more faith in the golden knights over the oilers is
is what i'm saying yeah it's it's it's really difficult to write them off like for sure that
game is impossible both of those teams are impossible because essentially what you're
being forced to do heading into the playoffs with both team with both teams is ignore the
evidence of your eyes and ears yeah which is they've been very underwhelming all season long
both of them um but they're they give off sleeping giant vibes uh the oilers just because they've
done it before right yeah the the oilers more so than vegas because the oilers are relatively
similar to the team they've been the past couple years when they've gone to the cup final
that team from 2023 when vegas won it is very changed very changed now if i wanted to be
impossible and exhausting about it um and i decided to from a narrative perspective look
at the vegas golden knights the way the people have looked at the leafs all season vegas is
having arguably their worst season they're statistically worst statistically worst season
ever what's changed uh i think it's the fact well i think they don't have enough centers
i think that's a big that's not true they have a 12 million dollar center on their second line
what what a privilege what a luxury that they have a 12 million dollar center on their second line
next year they're gonna have two because jack eichel's getting 12 man
now of course i'm not looking at that when rasmus i'm not looking at it like that when
rasmus anderson signs his extension yeah are we getting close to core four territory
buddy buddy maddie just shuddered over there i said listen vegas still has plenty of time to
make me look stupid here of course and they probably will make us look dumb but and like
this isn't about marner they're playing him at center that's stupid yeah that's putting
that's putting a 96 million dollar investment in a position to fail right they're not playing
one of the most prolific two-way scoring playmaking right wingers in the league at center
that is dumb that is a dumb thing to do and you have an all-world coach who is making that dumb
decision hockey is wild sports are wild it is a dumb thing to do i don't put this on mitch i put
it on the dumb decision uh to put him at center but one thing i've said from the beginning is
yeah okay you load it up at that position or you load it up up front because playing marner at
right wing is impossible apparently you load it up up front who's back there that's how vegas won
that cup it was depth it was it was depth but it was it was dominance on d and aiden hill was
obviously much better but they also made his job a lot easier yeah and replace a petrangelo though
I mean, I think obviously they're hoping Anderson will come in and be successful, but it's been an awkward fit.
Yes, but Adam, they had $12 million to go out and try to fix the Petrangelo situation, and they spent it on a winger who they're deciding to play at center.
That was never smart.
Never.
That's fair.
That's totally fair.
and they have gone they've tried to solve their goaltending problems in several different ways
and it hasn't worked in several different ways and they went out to try to address their defensive
woes by getting a defender who pretty notoriously is not all that great in his own end and is not
that fleet of foot either and he is no and coming off of like a injury riddled season he's 29
the uh and he's making because of the the salary hold back or whatever with vegas this year he's
making 2.275 next year what's rasmus anderson gonna make 9 10 million bucks this is a right
shot defenseman 30 years old and i look up the roster here guys brain mcnab signed for two more
years after this one he's 35 hannifin signed till 2032 he's 29 theodore's 30 they're all very very
good dude you're loaded with olympian you're loaded with all world quality players martyrs 28
eichel's 29 stones 33 hurdles 32 barbachev's 30 like the the wind i've been barbachev's 30 yeah
i was at the draft when he was picked well you're older you're a lot older oh my god oh that hurts
my heart riley smith brandon saw they're they're in their closing in their mid-30s colton citizen's
32 like these are you know depth guys but my point is like you got to do this now you got to do this
is the win now here for vegas are you kidding yeah like you gotta do this now and then probably the
next two or three years i do feel like they're going to be better next year with carlson back
in the lineup long term like i just i just think that really hurts you of course and no one in the
league should care no one in the league should care that you have william carlson and mark stone
in and out of your lineup um it's the nhl it's an olympic year this is what happens
look around the league look at your competition they've all had significant injuries too
boohoo right right you know well i'm hoping that they do something stupid and fire bruce cassidy
so the leafs can hire him jesse i don't know he's playing a 12 million dollar right winger at center
i don't think it's about feeling bad for the golden knights but i do think that the william
carlson situation is a built-in reason for the situation that they are in sure because we are
underrating his importance to that lineup because i thought about it our conversation on wednesday
show and it's like okay so we had that thing it's clearly it's not a great lineup when you got to
play mitch marner at center but their hand has been forced for that situation he's been out since
november um they they thought they would have william carlson this season and it looks like
they won't have him at all and his importance to this lineup it it should be noted and that
that can affect an entire team if you go back to their cup run if you look at some of the stats he
led the team along with uh marsh or so in even strength goals he was unbelievable that playoff
run and he might be the most important center they have like eichel is going to be the star
he's going to be the driving force that they have but the way what he does in terms of his role
might be so important to the lineup that when he does come out there's all of this change there
and that's on them to coach around that and to fix that if you're trying to win you got to go
out and solve that in different ways maybe you don't get anderson maybe you get the center that
you need to fill in that gap but they clearly haven't done that so that's on the roster
construction issue that's on the general manager for not doing that to help the coach but the coach
has been put into a situation where he might be missing his most important center since november
and he's not coming back and for any team that's gonna change your lineup and it's you know i
understand what you're saying because like eichel's the star but a lot of teams have a star and they
just sort of bash against each other and cancel each other out like you got to go down to like
the second and third line that's where a lot of games and series are won and lost exactly which
sounds like a very hockey broadcaster way of looking at it no but like but it's true you think
about a series against mcdavid and the oilers like carlson's probably gonna get that matchup
yes he is to shut him down and they don't have that at all and it's on them for not solving it
and there's no feeling bad for vegas but i think beyond the if we want to circle the conversation
and over and over again they're like hey you got mitch marner and now you suck and you're playing
on the center it's context we can do that but there's also you didn't solve the most important
issue you might have had on your team which is william carson william carlson not being there
plus goaltending has been a disaster for most of the year and now aiden hill's playing okay lately
but it's still like the carter hart thing was still has been the mess that hasn't solved anything and
yeah they just don't have any goals i want to throw something at you guys because i know they
have no cap space but it is kind of perplexing that with the centers available and for the
relatively low cost that some of them went I'm speaking specifically about Scott Lawton Lawton
would have been perfect they do have a second and a third rounder this year now they have almost no
draft picks uh the next few years like I and what I'm saying is like they've got no no first for the
next two years uh and no fourth this year no third next I don't think they care they shouldn't uh
But when I look at that, I go, man, Scott Lawton would fit that lineup perfectly.
I don't know if it's a case of Hurdle and Marner not having great chemistry together.
If Dorofeev's not as strong on his left side, you got, I'm sorry, no disrespect to Dorofeev.
But when you get Mitch Marner, Dorofeev moves.
Yeah, man.
And like, because Marner's the bigger investment.
He's the higher point getter.
Yes, Dorofeev's the finisher.
And if Dorothea ever wants to make Marner money, he's going to need to figure out how to be on Marner's line and receive those passes.
They clearly want to keep these two guys together.
To me, if you get a lot, then you can move him to fourth or third line center.
Depends on, you know, who you want Colton Sissons where and I don't know, Brett Howden sometimes play center.
But you can you get that for a third round pick, right?
Yeah.
At retained.
And yeah, you probably have to send some salary back the Leafs way.
So maybe that becomes a second.
I don't know.
But they went out and got nicked out instead at $3 million.
And I think Lawton would have been a much, much better pickup for them.
Is it a case of Kelly McCormick spending all of his assets over the last couple of years and getting everything he wants in the world?
And it seems like they never have a salary cap and they never have unlimited assets.
And then when they actually need something, they don't have the ability to go and get it because they already went and got Anderson.
I think you're right.
We're just not used to seeing them in this position.
Yeah, totally.
I think that I love the organizational ethos, which is, hey, is there a star player available?
Get them because they do.
They're in on everybody.
And they worked at Anderson deal for more than a year.
Like that was a long slog.
But oddly, it's led them to a position where they don't have enough depth pieces.
Yeah, I would tell them, hey, this wasn't the year to get the star.
This is the time to get Scott Lawton.
Just the guy at the center.
Any living, breathing human being who plays center.
I don't mean to disrespect Nick Dow, but there's an enormous difference.
I mean, he's a right shot center, which is important.
He's a good player.
He's a good player.
He's 35, and he's signed through next season.
You could get Lawton at one and a half and go, because he was making three, get him salary retained and go, hey, you know what?
Maybe this is a guy that sticks around, too, because he's also the fucking man.
He's a great guy.
Great clubhouse guy.
Everybody loves Scott Lawton.
I don't know.
I think they went out and acquired the wrong guy.
And I think Lawton gives you more at a younger age and a cheaper price when it comes to replacing some of what William Carlson brings.
I had somebody in the chat on one of my streams the other day said, like, we're missing our and they weren't making a direct comparison here.
So I don't want to miss miss say what they say, but they basically said Carlson is our mini Barkov.
He does for us.
Right.
A lot of what Barkov does for the Panthers, except he doesn't do it at Barkov's level because nobody does.
Right.
And I think I think Lawton could give you some having Barkov allows for Sam Bennett to win the conspite.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
And like who was actually the MVP?
If you probably Barkov, if you were to ask every player on the idea, you know, but who scored the most because he had Barkov doing it while Barkov and Lundell.
Yeah.
Which is like having two and at least two Barkovs.
Yep.
i also wondered if they went the nick dowd direction because george mcphee uh has a lot
of connections to washington right well that's hockey in a nutshell i know this person i have
this person's phone number they're a great hockey player right as a result got it i don't need to
scout him i have his number in my phone here's here's what i would say it's not even about going
out and getting someone like you mentioned like a like a howden or like any of these guys who
are like part-time centers any of them doing a bad job at center would be a better option
than watering down your 12 million dollar player even by playing them at the wrong position in the
second round their line right steve yes yes playing a center who can do a barely passable
job there but sticking them with marner is better than now you're just watering down the whole line
you're not starting with the puck he's not winning the face-off right he's exhausted from all the
other duties you have him doing because he's he you know power play penalty kill and all that
and the wingers are now playing with a substandard defense or sorry at center and they're not able to
cope with it because they're not marner marner would be able to cope with it probably we've
seen him you know turn water into wine before i it doesn't make any sense to me like you
this summer was a referendum on mitch barter right and they're going out of their way
to misuse this player and it's very obviously hurting them i know you don't have carlson
i know you don't have stone i i used the caprizov example last episode minnesota despite their
deficiencies up the middle has never once been like all right here we're gonna put caprizov at
center what are you doing so i've heard through the grapevine a couple of times i've never been
able to verify this that the reason gerard galant didn't work out in vegas was because he basically
told the management to f off when they gave him his lineup sheet and said these are the players
we want you to play and wear because vegas apparently operates like we have our analysts
kind of like the blue jays right speaking of because you guys are both wearing blue jays gear
um where john schneider gets the lineup from the analytics staff and goes this is your optimal
lineup play it and i'm wondering if there's a disconnect between bruce cassidy and the stats
people in vegas or if the stats people are telling him to do it because that's what i'm not saying
gerard galant's this great coach because i don't actually i think gerard's a good guy but i don't
think i don't think he measures anywhere close to what bruce cassidy is and so i'm just curious if
there's a is there a disconnect between management and and coach now i just have a hard time
believing that because there's no way marner stats are better at this unfamiliar position
yeah but it would be a right wing but underlying steve no underlying it would also look like
shits and it's and the final product also looks like and his face off percentage is 40 right
because he's not a center what are we doing i know i know i don't get it now i don't get and
someone mentioned to me they're like well he was drafted as a center dude half the wingers in the
league were drafted at center yeah like that's yeah if you're the best player on your team
growing up you're gonna play center yeah that's how it works yeah if you're 17 and you're a center
Looking to dominate off the ice as much as your team might on the ice.
And I say might because it's not our team.
Yep.
I am looking for that.
Well, you can guarantee it with a Toyota Tacoma.
Your team can't guarantee it, but you can.
Got it.
Standard I-Force engine boasts an impressive towing capacity of 6,400 pounds.
In fact, it's the most powerful Tacoma ever.
Do you like power?
Tacoma's got it.
Plus, they got the available multi-terrain view monitor,
which gives you the undercar kind of thing
because if you're navigating terrain
and you're out in Ajax
and there's potholes,
they're going to work for you.
They're going to work kind of a lot.
They are, yeah.
Power lift gate helps you load gear

Now, Steve and Jesse,
important to note,
Edmonton has won
three straight games once this year that's crazy one time that's crazy tomorrow they got an
opportunity to win three straight games whoa and and yesterday was a very important game because
they went into that game tied with the golden knights uh-huh huge and now they've at 79 points
now they got 81 gold knights still at 79 do you know who they're playing tomorrow
vancouver jesse i know they have utah and seattle in some sort of form coming up they do seattle
next tuesday it's utah later that week oh okay anaheim ducks tomorrow oh damn and it's a noon
game for in the west 330 yard time oh so it's going to be an early game and i'm i'm going to
be watching that one oh tomorrow saturday yeah right yes yeah i was like wow that's a weird one
I think that's a pretty damn important matchup.
And because now they've got home ice advantage.
You go into that game.
Now, Anaheim's got a game in hand.
But let's say you win that game and you're the Oilers.
Well, now they're at 86 points and you're at 83.
Division is within reach.
And I don't know if you want to win the division.
Do you want it?
You're going to play Utah, but who do you want to play?
But I do think it could be funny after how silly this season has been for the Oilers.
They could still win this division.
It's an interesting conversation because you have, you have reeling, but battle tested Vegas. They are battle tested. No question. And you have up and coming, but not battle tested Utah. I don't know. Like, I think, I think you'd get a lot of different answers for what you'd rather have there.
oh yeah jesse who would you rather have your edmonton right now are you are you battling
for first in the pacific you're just going let's just play vegas because we feel more confident
i would definitely want to play vegas they have their number like in especially last night last
night's game was good too because it felt like edmonton was always gonna score that next goal
and they ended up doing i thought they were gonna finish it off in regulation and vegas got that
surprise goal to tie it and get that that point but they felt like they dominated that play that
was a good game for them it was yeah it was okay just i just throw that out there let's be nice
just waltz into the playoffs and play the same two teams every damn time well i mean last ask
the oilers last four years it's been the same first round opponent this is gonna be the first
in a while where it hasn't been um hey hold your horses yeah hey that could still happen win the
division and the king sneak in oh look who it is man can you imagine oh yeah it's not likely but
it's possible it's not impossible there are a few points out now the oilers uh three games in a row
thing none of their were their one three game winning streak wasn't with all regulation wins
does that change your mind oh because if there are one three game winning streak that happened
like a couple weeks ago two of the games they won in ot oh man and then now last night they
went in ot so this three game win streak if they do end up beating anaheim wouldn't even be three
regulation wins in a row they do not have three regulation wins in a row this season that's so
nuts that's so nuts does that change your mind at all about the win streak um or are we just
everything everything the nhl these days is three points so who cares i think if you're the oilers
it shouldn't if you're gonna split hairs over stats which is our job i think it should um you're
talking about a five on five win versus a three on three you can't you can't say that they're the
same especially when the nhl uses regulation wins as a tiebreaker no one in the pacific
may be safe for the ducks is in a position to be picky they like you want to win games a certain
way the oilers still need points like they're not in and it's part of the rules yeah but i so i think
if you're the oilers or if you're an oiler fan you don't care no but i think if you're going to
be nitpicky about stats again like i said we've got a you know we got podcasts to talk here i
definitely think there's a difference between three regulation wins and three a couple i think
there is yeah how much of a difference jesse like how much difference does that make for you
because you're the one who's like you know what four goals that's not a hat trick i i do think
about it when i'm thinking about anaheim in the playoffs because of how much they have stacked
wins after regulation time and that doesn't happen in the playoffs you you just keep playing five on
five so it's not a matter of like oh anaheim they suck it's just you gotta look at them a little
differently because they have gotten a lot extra points because they are good at three on three and
at the shootout on the other end of the spectrum vegas cannot lose in three on three overtime or
the shootout when there is none so that might add a little bit to their stock come playoff time
I have lost a lot.
So let me just run.
This is fun.
Where do who leads the league in regulation wins?
Give me the top three teams.
I mean, it's got to be Colorado, Dallas, Tampa.
Okay, Jesse, give me yours.
My guess would be Buffalo, Tampa, and Carolina.
In that order?
No.
All three.
Okay, who's in that?
Who's the order for you?
buffalo uh i'll throw in buffalo colorado carolina so it is colorado okay 42 regulation
wins which is incredible that's a lot 37 for buffalo ah 35 for tampa ah so did i get all three
no i said carolina carolina's in sixth ah they actually have the same amount of regulation
wins as ottawa but ottawa has the tie break for whatever reason i don't know why um the it's
interesting because everybody was talking about how the Atlantic division isn't as dominant
anymore. And this is what I was talking about, about harvesting points. I think the Atlantic
division is still the toughest division in the league by far. No questions asked. You got two
of the top three in regulation wins right there. Okay. Dallas stars are four senators, hurricanes
five. And interestingly, where do the division leading Anaheim ducks sit in regulation wins
relative to the rest of the league a number out of 32 give it to me like 13 13 that's low that's
low oh my gosh it's way lower than that it's like 22nd it's exactly 22nd yo what they're what yeah
and you know who's lower than them actually it's funny they've got the same amount Vegas
so Anaheim's at 22nd where's the least Vegas is at 24 Toronto just behind them at 25 and by the
wait anaheim winnipeg uh vegas 24 regulation wins each um so that's 22 23 24 in the and then
toronto with 23 calgary with 23 philly with 22 and philly's somewhat in the playoff race somewhat
they're not they're the eastern jets yeah yeah they're not they're not out of it but they're
not really in it we're still here yeah i'm not dead yet yeah they've had every opportunity to
get a win and to get back
in every time they have that shot
they lose every time shame
the Ducks thing I brought what did
I bring it up like Monday or Friday show
it's like it's not
to take away with from what they're
doing this season because it's so impressive
that they could win the division
but it is a paper tiger ish
that you've stockpiled so
many wins after 60
minutes I think so
yeah I think so it's but that's for all
three right yeah anaheim vegas well this is the thing like we're we've spent the better part of
the past week being like i don't know if this team's good i don't know if this team's good
oh this team's good at least two of them are gonna end up in the second round because yeah
i don't know someone's gotta win now who is currently a point out of the playoffs and
second last in regulation wins one point out of the playoffs the only team they are ahead of
is the vancouver canucks in regulation wins that is psychotic i'm gonna go oh the kings
the la kings oh vancouver's got 14 la and new york have 19 regulation wins they have fewer
than 20 regular they have fewer than 20 and they're in the playoffs so when we talk about
three-game winning streaks that are partially
in overtime, I think Jesse's got a point.
I don't know. The West sucks.
I think it's the whole point. It does. The most
oilery thing, we talk about leafy things,
the most oilery thing is they go
the entire season without winning
three straight, and they do it
first three games of the playoff.
Yeah, they sweep.
Sweep whoever. Sweep whoever.
Whoever they end up playing. The Ducks, by the way,
did it last night. They beat the Flames in
overtime. Yes. Again.
Not a regulation win.
All right.
Alexander Ovechkin set a record last night.
Actually, a couple.
His 34th hat trick puts him fourth all time.
How is he fourth?
And he's done it against 22 NHL teams.
I believe it's 22.
I'm just going to pull my stat up there.
No, 21 NHL teams.
Hat tricks against 21?
21 teams.
That is a record.
Nobody holds that record.
When we were born, that was how many teams there were.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Holy crap.
Now, a couple of questions for you.
Who is ahead of Ovechkin in hat tricks in the NHL all time?
I think you'll get the first two.
The third one you should get, but it was the first two are obvious.
Gretzky, Lemieux.
Yeah, Gretzky, Lemieux.
Gretzky at 50, Lemieux at 40.
There's somebody right behind Lemieux at 39.
One of the most prolific goal scorers ever, completely overlooked.
Mike Bossy.
Mike Bossy.
yeah let's go well done guys well done let's go all right he was well done go look at his hockey
db page kids illy gone well because he had like there was no drop off knee injury yep i thought
it was back or something both it fucked yeah he got fucked up and i'm he's one of those guys like
like bobby or where you go if he'd played 20 years oh my god like holy shit he'd have the record
yeah he'd have the goal scoring record no question uh there's a there's a few there's
it was bossy if bobby hall never left for the wha yep and uh lemieux if he gets to even like
1200 games lemieux played fewer than a thousand games and he had 690 goals that's insane do you
think he's sad he doesn't have the stick the stick the golden stick they give you the silver stick
i think they gave it to him do you think do you think lemieux's like ah dang it i wish i had that
amongst all of my things his trophy case is a the size of a garage like i think he's but he looks at
it and he says ah but i don't have that you're rich mario just buy one he leaves a spot for it
in the trophy case yeah he just he just looks at hairs he just the the greatest season that never
was was uh 92 93 he had a chance to repeat he left the nhl briefly to recover from a cancer
diagnosis he also battled a back injury he was on pace to break the goals and points record
for a single season and sorry it's a three-peat because they won the first what did i say you
said repeat oh repeat three-peat no no yeah three-peat now another stat for you and this is
this is going I'm going to put Steve to the test here Jesse okay because there's no way you or I
would ever remember this okay Alexander Ovechkin's rookie year was Steve and I's last year of high
school which is hilarious oh 2005-2006 stop it you didn't have to say that he recorded his first
NHL hat trick January 13 2006 so roughly three months into his NHL career I'm surprised it took
that long honestly who did he do it against can you remember that was the the old metro division
and that's got atlanta thrashers written all over it you think so yeah it's not damn uh
three two overtime wins we scored all three goals against a team that's no longer called
this the mighty ducks of anaheim really and who was in net in 2006 that's got to be uh j.s
jaguar that's correct wow so he did that and i just want to throw this out there i some upstart
young goalie played 31 games for the ducks that year turned out to be one of the nhl's best for
a hot minute back then jonas hiller no who backed up j.s jaguar in this season
russian that's right oh and the leading scorer of the ducks that year tamu solani with 40 goals
and 50 assists the second leading scorer was a fellow named andy mcdonald andy mcdonald
i don't even remember that's such a good bar name yeah yeah you're right three beers in you just
yo andy mcdonald now jesse can you bring up the uh uh and don't put it up on screen yet but there's
a thing I've got highlighted in the prep sheet there
because something else happened for Ovi
yesterday that blew my mind
and I haven't been able to verify it, but apparently
it is true. Okay.
Something happened with Alexander
Ovechkin last night that is not Hattrick
related. That is his
first of the season.
What could it be, Steve? So not Hattrick
related.
Not Hattrick related.
His
first, it's going to be something
stupid.
power play goal not not that it's not a jack eichel situation no no are you ready to find out
i am okay eyes on the screen it took 73 games according to gino hard but last night was
ovechkin's first d zone start of the season yo his first diesel do you have any idea do you have
any idea how insane that is hey you know what though i respect the shit out of it because
why would you start him in the d zone no that's not even necessary well it's that's not just up
to coaching do you realize this means ovechkin hasn't been on the ice for an icing this season
no this is a start as in like his first part of a shift yes oh right so you get to change and you
throw him out there it doesn't it doesn't mean he hasn't been on the ice right so if he was it's a
start got it wow wow do you think carberry like just forgot i think carberry smart why would you
do that no no i'm saying do you think you just messed up like in this moment oh why'd you wait
till now no yeah i think you probably screwed up that's crazy it's a bad idea how much time is left
like are they losing it's in the third it's 256 in the third they're up up six four that's crazy
because he's out there to end games a lot yeah wow yeah i'm stunned by that i understand why you
avoid is it to get it's probably to get the empty net goal a hundred percent to get it's probably
why right yeah that's the only reason but like this scenario has never happened at all once
that's to get another empty net goal like yeah yeah cool wow that's a cool stat i thought wow
thank you for that now uh do we want to bring up tom wilson's hit on jack mcbain
because it's a monster hit i want to i want to look at this because
when i looked at it the first time i'm like that's clean but does he leave his feet and i
still haven't been able to make my view i think this is just a good hard hit but when you're
the thing about hitting in the nhl is like if you leave your feet before you throw the hit
then it's illegal if you leave your feet after not so much one he's he's a guy who
always i feel like whenever he lays a hit my first question with him is did he leave his feet
and so that's a monster hit but it is it he got a roughing call for this he's like three quarters
the way up the board he's flying but point of contact is he on his feet point of contact
first of all because he does launch himself so that's a made-up flying like he's he's just going
that's crazy if i was a caps fan i'd be upset because roughing no it isn't what are you talking
about unless it was the response to the hit so you're right it's not roughing um it maybe it's
roughing because he the puck's not close enough yeah could be okay i don't know can i offer a
stupid opinion please so uh jumping before a hit is not as bad as jumping after that's a stupid
opinion oh all right adam just explained it like it's the opposite well it's okay steve explain
yourself explain yourself because he's using the leverage of the ice to hit you so much harder
than if he was flying at you while you're planted yeah but the reason the other way is illegal is
because if you jump before then your principal point of contact is usually their noggin and
you're giving them a ct i mean the principal point of contact appeared to be the dog in here
yeah but like at least when you hit them in the shoulder and then explode through it's not i'm
just trying to brain you that's why i think but it's hmm i'm not i'm not sure are both bad yeah
yeah kind of well like is there a better is there a larger conversation of hey this player
is pro like we're all laughing but like like okay look at that look at that and he's he's
prolific at laying the hardest hits in the league that definitely make head contact but are by the
of the rule legal and are we now getting into a south park sarcastical type of argument well oh
okay well then let's just take hitting out of the game like no we didn't say that it's just a lot of
people appear to get head trauma from this player and do we want that so this is what this is an
interesting one because when so back in the day uh i'm old enough to remember the can opener where
brian mccabe would just lazily put his stick between your legs and if you were coming in on
him it wasn't illegal for him to put his stick there at the time if you tried to do a crossover
over there you trip and he'd be like well it's your fault and it was a really smart play and
it worked for a long time and then the nhl said that's tripping now why was that what's interesting
about this is that tom wilson might make the point of contact with his feet on the ground
but what is clear is he's launching off his toes as soon as that hit happens jack mcbain is like
dying halfway through on the way down and tom wilson is still rising yes like he's he's fallen
and he's like Tom Wilson's still going up like he's still he's still reaching the glass here
like he's MJ like it's insane yeah yeah do we want this like let's just have the conversation
broadly as a hockey community if you change do we want tomorrow to make this illegal I wouldn't
bat an eye I wouldn't either I would be like okay that's fine I still think that could be a
devastating hit without him jumping I like he'll run that guy over he's Tom Wilson yeah if they
said hey you can't leap immediately after you make contact with the guy that's now illegal i'd be like
okay i get it because this is this is really scummy stuff yeah him plant him planting and
then driving up with the force of a thousand suns i do we want this like again this is not a segment
about this is dirty or this is an illegal hit because it's legal no it's it's legal yeah i
don't know where the roughing came from i assume it's from something that happened after this
uh because that's i think i think it's not roughing i think it's where the puck is
well that's interference isn't it i you know what you're right i don't know i don't know like i
don't know what they're calling sorry do you have the call on the ice well roughing it was roughing
yeah yeah so i don't know what they're calling but based on what i'm seeing and like remembering
the department of player safety's video from whenever the zach white cloud hit was on matthew
nice i can never remember if it was last year or the year before um like by the letter of the law
that's a legal hit and i get the question i'm throwing out with no agenda is do we want is it
roughing because mcbain has made the play right and and it's unnecessary roughing like it's it's
the it's it's sort of like oh yeah because he's looking the other way there's no he's not taking
him out of the play with this legal check to the head almost didn't need to do this yeah
like i guess the question is okay the ref thought this was bad were they right were they wrong for
the right reasons it might have been might have been that happens that happens i guess tom wilson
did have to fight by the way loss and kraus and him fought and it was funny because he brings kraus
down and then he falls down and then kraus gets up and starts punching him again so there was a
good fight between the two of them um another team that sticks up for its guys two uh i want to say
two first round picks definitely two first round yeah lost and kraus for sure was i remember don
cherry was like at least you to get lost across he was like a top 10 pickers this new lander guy
or whatever marner whoever it was no that was nick richie oh is nick richie yeah didn't kraus
go right after new lander did he go ninth they were different versions of each other i want to
say in back-to-back drafts uh kraus and richie don't uh i know john cherry was like leafs need
to get lost in crows and i'm going like and then he said nick ritchie yeah i i asked what the call
was on the ice because i i thought it wasn't roughing because that wouldn't make much sense
it was interference oh it was okay so i pulled up there it's two minutes for interference which
makes complete sense jack mcbain sent the pass and then tom most had hit him very late which is
you can't do that that's interference but the check itself is illegal but you can't interfere
with him like that well then flawed my research apologies well then okay that was interference so
let's let's then change the conversation it's an illegal hit and a player got injured from it
why isn't this then supplemental discipline or a major penalty no the hit was legal it's just
interference yeah that's illegal he hit somebody away yeah so yeah it's illegal on the ice though
it's illegal and what i mean what jesse's saying is that they they made the right call based on
their rules yeah and it wouldn't be supplemental because it was a legal hit in an illegal situation
right you know what interference yeah no no i guess but the nhl uh judges things by their
like severity no right no they do they absolutely well you're talking about no but like it's a it's
a it was a legal check if it was an illegal play then we're we can talk about suspension stuff but
this isn't i don't think there's anything here it's a legal hit i get it's just a regular body
check no it's an extreme version of interference right there's interference and then there's that
like that's a that's a wallop of a body check yeah and it's interference yeah you know so i don't
listen i have uh abandoned my attempts to be like hey let's you know let's make hockey safer
because that's just invites people who play hockey to call you slurs and um that's all right
you keep it the way you want um i'm not interested in protecting you if you're not
interested in protecting protected yeah you know what i mean so tom fill your boots i guess or fly
your boots or fly your whatever yeah fill your boots so you have something holding you to the
it's like the mario thing where you get the you get the wings on your boots
yeah yeah friggin uh tom tanuki wilson yeah there you go there you go if that was ruled
if that was made a rule where you can't do it anymore i would be happy with that you can take
that out of the game whoa that's fine yeah because again he's got mcbain so so gone that if he keeps
his feet on the ice it almost looks a little more badass because he skates right through him rather
than up because right now if you look at like it from an actual like if you're going to nitpick
the hockey play tom wilson has taken mcbain out but he's also taking himself out of that play
right because he jumps up and down you lose all your momentum when you when you level guys
yeah he usually was on his feet afterwards yeah like those big hip checks you the craziest one
is still uh michael sauer poor guy yeah michael sauer from the rangers who i don't think ever
played again yeah but for no oh my god he was a bit of a just animal def arm the guy yep now
sometimes life throws your curveballs and you don't have time to get to them and that's where
task rabbit comes in and i think you should check this out because here's the deal one of the things

senators we're going to hold the senators talk let's start with the penguins because the penguins
it would appear sydney crosby was hurt again and it was a nick cousins hit but it really wasn't
much it didn't look like anything but i think uh i think obviously whatever radco gudis did to
Sidney Crosby in the Olympics remember he's gonna learn uh he's gotta learn um I I think it's it's
certainly something that Crosby is monitoring apparently he took himself out of the game
but the Penguins are 5-3-3 without Crosby this year and Malkin did not play and I think a good
chunk of the reason why is Eric Carlson who has played 14 games this March eight goals 13 assists
for 21 points eight goals 13 assists in 14 games that's a defenseman in his late 30s or mid to late
30s excuse me and he's in hockey late 30s yeah 35 is hockey late 30s oh thank you yeah and this is
a guy and again it was like quote of the year material where Dubas said his work ethic needs
to match his ambitions and boy has it this season man and Dubas said we're not trading him he's
already come out and said we are not trading him we will not trade this player this offseason he's
he's useful to teams who want to win still and i think letang falling off also sort of letang's not
yeah i think this is it for that's unfortunate but that's pretty crazy huh and crosby was seen
without a limp after the game just pointing that out too i mean he's got to be he's got to be
careful um obviously because they have uh aspirations of getting into the playoffs
there was a player i wanted to shout out if my phone would just cooperate with me ben kindle
dude oh we got the uh we got the goal here too from his uh from the shootout well just the season
yeah he's been great 69 games played 17 goals 16 assists 33 points the dude was picked 11th overall
this past june how many 11th overall picks go straight to the nhl and stay there right like
i'm thinking of like i don't remember where he was picked but like jet luchenko who's gotten a
couple cups of coffee with the flyers and like that's not unusual and he's not even a former
greyhound it's where did he hit the calgary hit man that's not even the oh what that is
a remarkable herculean win for the pittsburgh penguins to get an immediate impact player
at 11th overall that's crazy and he's 18 and he's 18 and he doesn't turn 19 until april 19
man yeah now jess can we bring up that kindle uh overtime goal uh it's a shootout goal
and it's important for the next part of this segment so i just want you to see it uh because
first off i do want to say i was there for history i was there for ben kindle's first goal
against the rangers this fall i think it was the one or there was only like one or two goals scored
by the penguins in that game and the rangers kicked their ass how surprising when you consider
that in retrospect but uh but ben kindle was great in that game and he's been great this season as
steve points out and this is a great goal uh watch him come in on lenis olmark here and lenis comes
right out kindle is very far to the right and he beats lenis short side or sorry um i guess not
five hole excuse me it's hard from this angle and it's just a shooter beating a goalie right
right and and because lenis has the angle on right but you just beat some sure and that's
it's that's it uh game is over those kits are so ugly dude oh the ottawa senators jerseys are
terrible they're so bad um but jesse in the article i've got there in our prep sheet we've
got lenis olmark's comments about the shootout after the game and i think i wanted to get your
reaction on this one guys because lenis and i agree on something which is i don't really like
shootouts i understand personally i understand their purpose which is finish the game um but
i don't really like it yeah i don't like them yeah they are for the average fan more entertaining
winning i would say than a shootout sorry uh than a than a than a tie right because you know you're
walking away with a win and again you need to finish it off and it also takes away wear and
tear on players but it kind of sucks to lose a game that way yeah but the players are the ones
whining about it right so have a listen to lenis uh talking to the ottawa media here lenis what's
What's your process for when the game does go into a shootout like that and you have to get so kind of just laser-like focused on just an individual?
I always hate the shootouts.
I think it's, like I said before, you feel like the best goalie out there if you make those saves and you win one nothing shootout and you let in two.
It doesn't matter what you've done prior.
Those are the last things you take away with you into the locker room.
and I've been a big advocate of playing 10 minutes instead
and if there's no winner you just go one point each
and go from there
it feels like you know you're tossing a coin sometimes
or have a little bit of a circus act
and that's where the you know guys have been battling for 65 minutes
really hard long season
you know there's got to be some
I think there's a better way of deciding
who's going to be the winner and who's not.
Now, here's the thing.
If you had two teams that needed to make the playoffs
and they played 10 minutes of overtime,
obviously, A, more wear and tear on players.
B, you could just rag the puck for 10 minutes
and everybody walks away with a point.
I think he's got a point,
but I think it's still anti-competitive
to go 10 minutes and bring ties back.
I think what you do is you play 10 minutes at three on three
and if nobody scores, nobody gets a point.
with the tom wilson conversation we talked about being right for the wrong reasons um
i think he's right for the wrong reasons okay you know what i mean like it's it's one of those
things and i always try to dump on the shootout in my videos when the leafs win one because that
way you don't sound like a whiner complaining about them after you lost he's got a point i
think he's got a point um it just doesn't land after a loss right i think he has a point i also
like i kind of dig the idea of there has to be a winner every time but this appears to be the
only continent where that matters right like i get i get the epl experience every weekend
at not even necessarily as an epl fan i just i just get to see people in my
married into family yep that uh lose their minds over a tie and it can be a it can be a herculean
victory it can be devastating defeat like could be a herculean tie yes like there are uh
even in a tie in the EPL,
there is a winner and a loser, right?
Like if it's, I don't know,
Chelsea versus pick a team at the bottom of the league.
That's a tie.
Chelsea fans act like they lost
and the team that is fighting off relegation is like,
oh my God, we got to point off Chelsea, right?
And why are we better than that?
I don't know.
Well, because because there's no relegation here.
Yeah, I guess.
I don't know.
It's like I saw a tie when, well, we grew up with ties, but like I was in person for a tie and I didn't leave that game going.
What a rip off.
No, no, I it is a very North American attitude.
Now, Jesse, what are your thoughts on Lena Solmark's comments about it?
And he's not wrong in that three on three or that the shootout isn't a great way to decide a game like it's a skills competition completely out aside of the of the idea of playing hockey.
That's why it's such a travesty in international hockey when they decide it that with the shootout, like I don't like it, but you do need to end these games somehow.
and it travis yost wrote an article in early january about three on three in the nhl and how
it's kind of regressed because that's not solving goals either and our games either and i'll bring
up a chart he made in his article here so full credit to him the entertainment value of the
product is going down yeah he was showing the last decade of three on three scoring and the
goals for per 60. And then the three on three volume attempts per 60. So shots, attempts per
60 last decade. And if you'll see on the screen, if you're listening, you'll see that this year,
sorry, last year, it was about 5.8% or 5.5 goals for per 60. And then the previous years,
they're all north of six. So we've gone in a direction where the three on three isn't doing
its job in solving these games.
So Linus Allmark's idea of adding 10 minutes to it, I don't think is the right idea.
Like there needs to be some way to manufacture these games to end and get more scoring.
But three on three, the guys have clearly found a way to solve it.
And it's not doing what we think it should be doing anymore.
And that's because, Jesse, an NHL coach's job is to limit opportunities against, especially
in overtime, right?
The reason they'll push it to the shootout is they'll they prefer to go down that way because at least then it's not their fault. If you're an NHL coach and you lose in overtime, it's your fault. You deployed the wrong people at the wrong times. If you take away a loser point, you allow ties back in the game. But if you tie, you get no points.
then even if five seven ten minutes however many minutes you want to play then it is incumbent on
the coaches to go we better go create some opportunities here because we can't walk away
both teams with zero points it pushes them into taking risks and that's what you need these teams
to do coaches are always going to be anti-risk they are risk averse that's what they should be
but in overtime you want to wrap the game up 10 minutes fine make it 10 minutes but make it a 10
minutes where if neither team walks away with a point they're both fucking pissed you got to get
it done let me give you four doors all right door one is it the four three two one point five thing
okay the door number one is you leave it door number two is you do what you just suggested
where it goes to three on three and if you lose you lose your point um door number three is 10
minutes of three on three over time and door number four is you leave it except there's no
offside oh i like a door no offside would be fun but then it's not hockey
you could argue it already yeah right pick a door pick a door again leave it uh you lose your point
um i don't remember the order same thing but there's no offside
what was the other one 10 minutes here's the thing if you're gonna the one thing about three
on three is they're only changing one rule then we shoot out it completely changes it but you're
changing one rule which is the amount of players on the ice right if you go to change like it you
can make the argument either way because it's still a skills competition it becomes a skills
competition right yeah but it certainly would be more exciting without uh without um uh whatever
offside i wonder if it might be just easier to rank the puck oh because no because there's no
offside again i can hang out wherever you want and you just pass it around you have to take away
never be a change of possession you have to take away the incentive to rag the puck which is zero
points that's the only thing to me that makes sense take away the incentive to play conservative
do you have to put a shot clock in i would do that home team i love that home team gets to
decide who your three players are no come on come on i like the creativity but i don't think
so we're gonna have a philippe meyer simone benoit and jake mccabe three on three like what
is happening i like me all of the defensemen yeah oh coach pick marner to take this face off no that
was his coach no he's just he's made him a center for some reason sorry i should have went with
carlo not mccabe oh carlo myers benoit just pick 3d yeah no that's what they would do each time
right oh i don't i don't know if that's uh you're solving any problem martin morinchen would have
got so much overtime so much overtime hey that's calder cup champion i know i think these guys
have solved three on three and they've made it a lot less entertaining which means you gotta you
got to do something i just hate in the nhl that we incentivize losing i just i cannot get over it
i cannot get over an overtime not had anything for a loss at at least at minimum it shouldn't
be half a win yeah yeah vegas has like what eight wins worth of losses they do i think there's 16
yeah 16 or 17 you know how hard it is to win eight games in the nhl well vegas didn't win them
right so uh overtime kings with 18 that's nine wins am i right on that i've just got to check
that ot league yeah vegas has 18 otls pittsburgh 16 vegas 15 leafs 13 chicago 13 minnesota 12
like that's nine yeah wins even dallas is 11 that's five and a half the nhl record for
least amount of wins in a season is less than that yeah is less than that amount of wins
you got from losses yep yeah i i think lenis brought up a conversation that i think needs
to be had yeah but maybe not the best time stop incentivizing losing nobody nobody's paying to
see losers win nobody's paying to see that nine wins yeah yeah nine wins worth of losses that's

So I want to move on to this.
Jess, can we bring up this picture?
The return of Lindy Ruff's career needs to be studied.
Man, this is a guy who was they chanted fire Lindsay and Lindy in New Jersey.
And then the next year when they were good, they said, sorry, Lindy.
Or was that just later in that season?
It was later that season.
And now people are saying he's the odds on favorite to win the Jack Adams this year because they are winning the Atlantic division, which for my money is the toughest division in the sport.
Did he make the decision to fire Kevin Adams?
No, he didn't.
but i will get to skevin adams i want to come i'm pretty sure earlier this season i
said like lindy ruff is my favorite to get fired because that's where the sabers were heading
and then they went oh we're elite now oh yeah oh the puck oh it's one of the weirdest turnarounds
i've ever seen um so best nhl team since january 1st 2026 okay just putting this into
stat muse has to be them it is they are the buffalo sabers are 23 6 and 4 since jan 1st
that's so good by the way second on that list the blue jackets oh yeah because the rick bonas
third are the bruins interesting um so let's bring up this picture by the way sabers tweeted
this out welcome to lindy ruffalo uh which i love and lindy uh lindy was part of the sabers teams
in the late 90s that broke our all our hearts here in toronto um would you guys if you were
voting and we don't get to vote but if you guys were voting would you vote lindy ruff as your guy
he'd have to be on my ballot he'd have to be on my ballot like who's the conversation
so right uh i think nhl had network headed a couple days ago but but a lot of people were
picking john cooper because the because the lightning are better than we thought although
they had i know and he's never won one he's losing to the other guy but is he the revenant
is this john cooper's revenant jack adams he's never had one one he's never had who cares
that's often not what the the award isn't about the best coach the awards about like hey who had
a surprise season and kind of outperformed their coaching expectations so you gotta have dan muse
a name i never hear dan dan muse coach of the penguins name i never hear come up this season
is joel quinville well there's quinville for the for the step up of the ducks there's
but if if the penguins don't make it i don't think muse can win it no he can't if the sends
don't make it i don't think travis green can win it but if they make it i think he can um
i mean bednar there's definitely an argument for like okay well we're the best though
we're just the best team yeah although when john cooper did it he didn't win
and i think cooper's got to be in that conversation so that's like what five names
jesse do you have any names to add to that i think it's a two horse race it's either lindy
ruff or rick bonus oh geez rick bonus you hired a guy your team was bad and then you hired a guy
and you're immediately one of the best teams in the nhl how is that not a coaching thing
your players didn't change the coach did and he came in and now you're the best or the coach
who's been coaching this team uh for a couple years and last year they were bad and they had
the same players and now the coach is able to get more out of the same guys and now they're one of
the best team in the league i think it's a two horse race so with with rough or well i guess
with the the sabers you're like this is who they were then this happened and then here's who they
are now right and that's the firing of their gm with the blue jackets it's here's what they were
they change coaches and here's what they are now so that's that's why bonus should maybe be in first
no for the sabers i'm saying last year they were that and then this year's the same guy so he's
doing something extra in his coaching yeah to get more out of these players i'm crediting lindy rough
for the turnaround and not firing kevin adams because i think that more and more this thing
goes on i think it's irrelevant that kevin adams was there or not right the okay the
also started winning under kevin adams yeah i'm trying to force him of that situation yeah it is
on the the nhl is not nearly cool enough to do this but we need the players on the nominated
coaches teams to explain why their coach should win what if coach of the year was the players vote
and they all just voted for their own teams and it was a 32 team tie how about there's there's
five candidates or three and each player gets a 60 second soliloquy for why their coach deserves
the jack adams well you know uh we really uh work hard under them and uh it's it's been a good year
you know there was this one game in december we weren't you know playing up to our potential and
then he told us to dig in and we thought that was a pretty good idea so we came out with the win
you know what you did really well underratedly and you didn't whip it out a lot because i think
people would think you're i don't know going at him too much okay but your mitch marner press
conference impression by the end of it got to it got good snl level when we were running them and
You could do it.
That was really good.
No one sucks their teeth harder than Mitch Marner to answer a question.
Steve could do it.
Steve could do it faster.
Like, hey, eye contact is lava.
Mitch, what's two plus two?
Yeah, well, you know, I know you guys think it's four.
You know, but we can't be concentrating on what you guys say.
You know, it could be five.
It could be blue.
It could be purple.
It could be, I don't know.
I'm just concentrating on houses in Vegas, how to make this team better.
and just focusing on my game.
Okay, so now I want to give a unpopular opinion.
I did float this in a group chat
with Steve and Jesse yesterday.
And I exclude Sabres fans
from what I'm about to say, okay?
Because Sabres fans don't have to do this.
But do we all, except for Sabres fans,
owe Kevin Adams an apology?
and the reason i say sabers fans don't need to apologize is because damn it they've been through
enough they don't need to apologize to anybody for anything good enjoy this run you guys have
been through it and they've been good about the come up they've been really good they didn't rub
the league's nose in it because they're not they're not 10 years 14 years out of the playoffs
like like wings fans are going see we fucking told you i wasn't gonna bring anyone up i wasn't
gonna bring anyone up but they've had the decency to be like we thought we were shit too yeah isn't
this crazy this is this is awesome it's not about the rest of the league it's about hooray us right
we are happy about us and what matters the most is us yes right so i good for them do not include
sapers fans in this you apologize to no one you just enjoy this run when the atlantic have fun
OK, house money. But I will be the first to apologize to Kevin Adams. Maybe Kevin Adams is not general manager material. And I don't think that he is. But if I were running an NHL team right now, I would at least want to look at him in the pro scouting department.
this is a guy who had and and this is terry pagula's problem this is not kevin's idea
terry pagula was like you know what i don't like spending money on this team go bills
and fired basically everybody about 10 years ago kevin adams was operating on a very small staff
so not only was kevin adams able to manage a very difficult personality in terry pagula
but he was able to on a skeletal staff put together a pretty impressive team that we kept
saying hey they're really talented and they just never put it together we said that year after year
this team's very good this is kevin adams team like everybody given yarmo their props i'm like
i saw yarmo in columbus i saw the teams he put together maybe he changed the vibe of the
organization and the players didn't like kevin themselves but there's no question he's a good
talent evaluator and i think he maybe doesn't necessarily need to be a gm ever again agm
uh is he a pro scout i think kevin adams should be working in the nhl
listen the we've had this conversation many times about assistant coaches and head coaches
um a great assistant coach usually gets promoted to being a head coach and then they become a head
coach and we discover they're not very good at that but then they go right back to doing an
assistant coaching job and they're good at it um there are some guys in this league where i'm like
girl boy i don't think you should be in charge of everything but you're clearly really good at
some things i'm what i'm trying to find is when was he hired adams was named this is from
wikipedia named the senior vice president of business business administration of the sabers
in 2019 as gm yeah he was named general manager 16th 2020 yeah there you go which is a wild time
to name your gm um although no that wasn't right before the draft because it was 2020
um so let's look at it since 2020 jack quinn at eighth overall that was a pretty good pick
jj peterka uh who they were able to turn into josh doan that was a pretty good pick uh owen power i
mean that's first overall um matt savoy who they were able to turn into ryan mcleod who's been
really good for them uh and then there's a bunch of other guys who have like given them games like
noah oslin and yuri kulich and zach benson i'm just looking at i would trust this guy
with assembling certain things in a complementary role he i don't think he ever had the experience
to be named gm i think that was insane yeah like from no question that was always insane but
i think there should be teams knocking to offer him some kind of role now what does he want
there's a fascinating conversation like you had it all for five six years
and now you're going to be answering to someone well you know but i guess you were answering to
someone the entire time yeah and you're always answering to someone that's true i mean yeah
we talked about this guy i mean i called him didn't i call him smithers yeah i think you did
yeah because he was just smithers to mr burns it was terry pagula but i think he could be a really
useful front office piece for someone put together i don't know pro scouting staff put together an
amateur scouting staff whatever it is he assembled a really good what ended up being a really good
team with a really bare-bones staff um and he just with the most hilarious timing ever was
not able to uh take in the fruits of his labor timing was never kevin adams thing jesse what
do you think here why was kevin adams fired the sabers sucked yeah i think if he was a better
better general manager maybe a better people manager maybe a better pr guy he would have
still had a job and it would have would have been able to see this thing through and more credit
could have been given to him because he still would have been there and he would have been
at the at the front of this really good hockey team but he was a a bull in a china shop once he
got there in firing everybody and not having anybody around to help him make any of these
decisions and eventually it came down to this team has been stinking for so long and you've been here
since june of 2020 you've had five year run at this and we've seen zero progress and that's on
him yes that is on him for not showing any types of step in that five-year window where he had to
be a general manager so okay the team is good now but you had your shot it's not like kevin adams
got fired one year in after overhauling the roster and the sabers like barely missed the
playoffs and he was unfairly fired i feel like kevin adams had every opportunity to keep his job
tenfold because he had his job for too long exactly because of how close he was with terry
pagula that thing became untenable he couldn't last in that job any longer so if there's any
feeling bad for kevin adams now that his team is really good and he's not there i don't because
he had his shot and if he was better at his job he'd still be there okay you're the president of
a team um kevin adams has come to your office for because you have a vacancy at assistant gm
okay um and he says uh mr blake i would like to be your assistant gm sir blake by the way sir
blake here's i would like to be your like sir lewis hamilton that's right yes um i don't want
a bgm i want to provide you with help for your pro scouting staff i want to provide you with
help for your amateur scouting staff if a microphone is ever placed in front of me i
will shoot the microphone with a gun so this is an american team yes yeah well most of them are
yeah right true that's true i'm just going by percentages the real nhl will you hire me i would
and i would say that i don't want you working the pro scouting staff department do the amateur
stuff do the draft stuff because clearly you've built this team very through the draft through
the draft it's it's been expertly done by you in buffalo and i would say i also want you to help
me on the business side because that's where you came from oh you are not a hockey guy through and
through you helped on the business side of running terry pagula's empire community outreach i think
terry pagula could be a wonderful agm and i think he should have a job as an agm somewhere so
sir blake do i get the job yes all right as long as i have a bloated front office where i got like
eight people in eight different roles and please don't say toronto fill their parts like kevin
yeah kevin adams was a leaf yeah yes he was he was a leaf this thing i 100 i think he can have
a job here it's just he shouldn't be at the top there you go kevin adams apology made oh damn
steve you look comfortable yeah well it's my doer jeans that i'm wearing hugging my butt now not
only does it hug your butt and make you look sissy the other thing is that it kind of regulates
temperature and they got the microfibers in there that allow not just for that airflow to come
through but you don't have to wash them as much no my butt's not too warm right now and sometimes
when you got to sit and do a podcast with a couple smelly guys yeah comes in handy now jesse you uh
have more than just doer jeans i do i have a doer doer polo uh the two guy wear most often during

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax is the stylish SUV for those on the move.
and with the standard chevy safety assist package you have the backup to handle every turn with
confidence the 2026 tracks start your build at chevrolet.ca uh leaf said bo grew down today
uh but that's just because he's played nine games in the nhl and he can't be here anymore otherwise
they would lose him to waivers when they send him or they try to call him back up or send him down
or whatever call him up in an emergency scenario if there's an injury which emergency is a very
broad term sure can you explain it one more time so he was sent down because he's played nine games
he has five points in those nine games by the way and he's got to be i think there's a waivers
component to this and i believe if they sent him down and tried to call him back up uh if he played
10 games they would i think he would go on waivers because the point of waivers is to spread the
wealth and make nhl jobs available for guys but and i know this has been the rule forever but this
rule actually prevents guys from staying in the nhl because you get nine games now the team's like
well now we have to send you down no matter he could be wayne gretzky and they got to send him
down in fact that increases his chances of being sent down from mark masters beau grew sent back
to the marlies after nine games with leafs if he played one more game he would need waivers to go
back down for the ahl playoffs right yeah which is uh part of it and that's good too you want them
in the playoffs that's awesome uh kind of stuff marley's playoff games this year might yeah might
maybe uh and i also want to mention that during this show and it's recording the leafs have signed
another ncaa free agent now as you guys know there are uh shows that are um uh sorry there are there
are teams that are being eliminated right now because the the tournament is happening and all
that right so uh the leafs signed a guy who is kind of interestingly a bit of a ghost his name
Hayes Hundley uh he will what a name uh he will double h we can call him um uh he will finish
this season with the Marlies and then he's on a three-year entry-level contract as of next season
it's interesting though because he's a bit of a ghost he's kind of hard to find a lot of scouting
reports on unless you've got like a major subscription to one of those scouting things
which I don't uh but quote from him says I like to defend hard I love to hit love to defend hard
once i defend hard i can get some offense maybe he's got 12 points for st thomas this year he is
from columbus on on ohio excuse me six foot three 21 years old six foot three two ten upper arlington
ohio oh upper arlington oh there you go i don't know i'm just reading the press well that yeah
upper arlington which i'm assuming is near columbus anyway it doesn't matter so this is
very quickly shaping up to be one of those playoffs where jesse if you were to get credentials for
the marlies um there's gonna be like 40 or 50 people there what do you mean like okay in 2016
2016 was the big one 2018 they won the calder cup but 2016 is when the leafs were rebuilding
um so they got all their guys back from the nhl team they had all these junior guys who they had
signed they had all these college guys who they had signed and they were running i want to say
it was like three practices by the end of it and i'm like who is this child walking around oh it's
jeremy bracco and like he's not getting in like it's just there's just an ocean of players there's
always like a few really really really bloated ahl teams at this time of year it sure seems like
that's what's going to happen marley's are going to be one of them i don't know where all of these
guys are going to play you might as well get these guys some ice time you know do it yeah like it'll
be good for gruta go down and play those games so here's my question who's playing center for
the least on saturday oh boy yeah don't don't be ready though isn't it domi lorenz tavarez
and quillen quillen there you go six minutes okay now jake quillen they should have lines
at practice they practice this morning i will i will check that out i had i don't think we have
to guess uh jacob quillen has already played uh 15 games with the least but he can't here i'm
loud uh cowan tavaris kneelander mark masters has it uh cowan tavaris kneelander nais domi
robertson macelli wolf boy macelli lorenz joshua pesetta quillen yarn croak oh i nailed it heaven
help us well a good pesetta is going to be in that's nice tomorrow's domi lorenz quillen down
the middle lorenz third line center my goodness i can't wait for matias macelli to set up steven
lorenz for 40 goals it's gonna happen yeah this is uh this is gonna be you know what this is gonna
be one of those lines where if the leafs do come back and play well next year that we're gonna be
looking at this and going look at what their lineup was a year ago oh my god yeah it's getting
to that territory huh it's like you know it's like the michael grabner lines like you know where pa
parento and michael grabner are your top two wingers and i'm happy for cali yarn croak he's
finally become the most important leaf man just he's just every day we need more on croak just
good for him what's probably a dream of his you know be both best player most important player
on the nhl team and he's reached his dream well and he's had for cali listen nobody wants to say
it but he's had a contract with like a swedish team reportedly ready to go since september yeah
and it's just like hey whenever you're done in the nhl just come on over no luke hames
ryan twerber fuck them just don't need them no cali yard girl no every day in the lineup i want
to see if he's the latest bloomer of all time you know the funniest thing too is is um bo grew
because jay quillen is the is the fourth line center and has been for a week i guess bo grew
was still taking extra shifts away from jay quillen because ruby fucking hates jay quillen
I was yelling for him to get called up,
and I'm like, all right, send him back down.
That's the guy they should send down.
They're not playing this person.
Yeah, they should absolutely send that guy back down.
Why is Lorenz the third line center?
Why?
And are you worried you're going to lose Philip Myers on waivers?
I don't know.
You could try Villeneuve.
That's a good point.
You're not losing that player on waivers.
Stetcher is, I think Myers' contract might be up anyway.
Stetcher's contract definitely is up,
and he's been scratched why would you not try Villeneuve on the on on number six because
and this is what that's the reason by the way that's the end of my answer because CJ alluded
to this on TSN 1015 I can't remember if I said it on the show or on the stream but he said there
seems to be a disconnect you think it's clear that true living wants something that Berube will
not give him and I think that's why Brad has given up calling guys up yeah because he's like
and that's why apparently he's not been around the team very much over the last couple of weeks
uh he's out there calling signing ncaa free agents which is great and as these teams get
eliminated i'm sure more will be announced but like i if you're brad you're like well i don't
control the lineup card he actually doesn't and i don't have the license clearly from ownership to
fire this coach so i'm gonna just stop calling guys up and i'm gonna go do what i can do what
i can control which is uh signing ncaa free agents and do something i mean listen he deserves credit
for going out and getting these college players because you have to you gotta do something well
i just refuse to believe um the reason he hasn't been around is because he had to be there
had like you have an enormous staff yeah but you know maybe it makes an impression on a player that
wow the you know gm came in so i think it's a very competitive field this year in terms of people
that are rating the ncaa oh totally so i think yeah for sure it's definitely a changing uh climate
with uh ncaa and chl and all that and you know maybe they signed some junior guys coming up
overagers but at the end of the day like listen no gm is all bad i still i i'm not interested in
this guy going forward i don't think my point is that i don't think that brad can do much with
craig still there and that i don't think craig can do much with brad still there well i don't
think maybe they should do much generally i think he's done out of here yeah uh keith pelly uh is
said to be according to pierre lebrun on insider trading job uh evaluating the whole organization
which you should be happy to hear having one-on-one meetings with everyone from the lowest level staff
on up throughout the organization and apparently many outside the organization on what they should
do um at least something is being done and i definitely think that's the leafs signaling to
the insiders hey you guys are people are accusing us of not doing anything we are doing stuff
and i think that's the bare minimum oh i agree with you but i do think steve and jesse
that so the the um steve jesse and adam are doing a show today like the draft law yeah it's her job
so the draft lottery is may 5th the leafs i think need to have whoever they're having as the general
manager in place by the draft lottery i don't i don't know how many more times i can say exactly
that i don't know how many more times i can say exactly that and they still haven't done anything
well i i think maybe they wait till is it april 16th april 18th when the season ends
that gives you less that gives you like two weeks well i think the process has started
that's the point the one-on-one meeting sincerely hope so the one-on-one meetings to me the most
important part of that is he's having meetings with people outside of the organization do you
not think that's a job interview that's just i mean the writing appears to be on the wall for
both of them i think even if you're gonna keep brad like you got to do your due diligence you
you have to at least see what's out there like so there was a report i can't remember if it was
lebron or drager or whatever that the leafs want to hear what true living's plan is going forward
i don't and here's why he didn't deliver on the last plan
what was the big word heading into the season there was a big word
burke used truculence right snot snot was that this year no that was two years ago yeah
his opening press conference was snot i thought it was this no no it was okay well even worse
this is his third season as gm you know that no yeah keith one year and then berube too
this is brad's third year as the general manager and he's got one year left on his deal
stop that i know time goes fast 2023 i know you're lying i'm not i kid you not oh my god anyway
is this have you ever seen the team with less not
well certainly with matthews and goudas no that's why it was news around the league
like everyone everyone is just so hell-bent on being right that they're violently wrong
like about well the leafs tried to play this style and it hasn't worked they're also not
playing that style you boner like they're they're dude they don't stick up for each other
until they're absolutely humiliated and forced to.
And then it's a bit for a bit.
Yeah, they don't play with passion and intensity,
not during any stretch of time where the games matter at all.
So Brad said his team was going to play a certain way
and he's failed on that promise.
He has.
So I'm not interested in his next promise.
So, and I agree with you.
I think we're all in agreement.
I don't think there's anybody else.
I don't think there's a pro Brad Treliving crowd.
I also don't think there's a bro Brad
Treliving crowd, but I want to say this
bro Treliving. He's yeah, maybe
there is because he is a nice guy. Yo, I
bro Treliving bro
Treliving. I'd want I'd follow that. Yeah.
Is he a look smacker? Yo
all I want to say is Brad Treliving is
probably awesome
to have beers. Oh, he's a wicked guy. I don't
think I'll ever be invited. I
I almost pissed myself
the other
day because I came down
the stairs. I had done the stream
and then i had done nailing the apex right afterwards on wednesday night so it's about 11 30
and i'm opening the door to the front of our of our office and there's a gigantic tall man there
who i can't really make out in the darkness and it's fucking jesse oh and i was like i was coming
at the same time we were coming out yeah i was like what are you doing here jesus christ and
literally that's what i said and you know one thing jesse and i talked about jess was the
goaltending from that rangers game if you didn't watch it was like the shots were 46 to 18 or 45
to 18 and the leafs fucking won joseph wall played really well he played british stirkin was kind of
low-key ass he was bad tavars beat him on a good shot joshua beat him on a good shot yeah and there
was a there was another one too can't remember who oh robertson yes so jesse yeah i think we
were talking we had this kind of casual conversation in the hallway i'm like you know
it's kind of stupid to say this but if stallers who played great on tuesday and wool who played
great on wednesday and they've both been low-key pretty good in the last couple weeks if they're
both like semi-healthy and playing like this next season i could see a world where this team's a
wild card team oh absolutely that's i've been saying and you know people get their their licks
in or whatever they're not this bad they just quit on the coach that's what happened they're
they're this season like leading up to this season heading into the olympic break they were a fringe
playoff team that's roughly what they are and you have an entire off season to get yourself out of
the fringes jesse when you interviewed the guys after the game uh again the rangers game i know
it was the mentors trip right but do they feel good about beating the rangers when the rangers
outshoot them by more than double the rangers in 2026 uh the vibes on wednesday were immaculate
i've never seen leaf so happy it was because all the mentors were around they were in the locker
room afterwards beforehand uh the blue jays were hanging around they got to watch warm-ups and then
the blue jays were in the locker room they were very happy on wednesday and i think those good
vibes translated to a good victory for them and it's it's so funny when brube talks about it being
a confidence issue when every fan who's ever been on a fan at least watches the teams and
sees them wilt it is mental with a lot of these guys i don't know why or how they've collected
a bunch of individuals who kind of have the same mentality about things but when things get down
they get down on themselves and they play worse and then when things are up they play better
and it's about changing that mentality for next year and playing always with that snot that true
living talked about that doesn't exist and playing in a good mood and chatting on the bench and
having good times before and after these games and if they're able to play with that attitude like
they could look a lot better i don't know if they're gonna win more games but they could look
better certainly and wednesday was a really good game for them against a poor opponent and they
took care of business sometimes seasons are miserable right this happened with the jets a
few years ago remember we were just like god everyone like it's not just that they're losing
hockey games each and every person seems to hate their life and uh they didn't blow it up and we're
like all right and they said as a group they wanted another crack at it and they did great
and they recovered ignore what's happening this year but you know maybe that could be you
that'd be nice yeah yeah now i'm open to it for fun let's check in on how the leafs have done uh
the the players who were traded have done since leaving oh why why we'll start with a good mood
bobby mcmahon who's got nine points in seven games uh another goal last night 20 sorry more
than 20 of bobby mcmahon's goals this season have been scored for seattle uh i i checked this last
night uh i'd have to recount bobby mcmahon has three multi-point games as a kraken he had five
as a leaf uh his also his stat line is extremely sexy because the goal he scored last night
is the 60th of his career to go along with the 40th assist of his career oh 100 round 100 points
but the problem is games played is 207 i know i'm a fan of round numbers but it didn't happen now
if you bring up this game log here maddie uh you'll see that the kraken are really leading
on mcmahon if you go to the time on ice column here you'll see last game he played 20 minutes
game before 22 minutes that is if you scroll a season high that 22 minutes they are relying on
him and he is delivering and it's all credit to bobby mcmahon how many 20 minute games did he
have with the leafs i saw one yeah i believe that would be yeah so there you go vegas in an ot game
uh he played 20 minutes and then you'll see here against the islander so that's two and i believe
that's the only other just the two i also think he was a mitch mismatch with matthews because he's
a goal scorer and so is matthews i think yeah you're allowed to have two i don't know yeah but
on the same line i don't know he did some of his best hey who do you want scoring goals on that
line austin yeah so take man off that line no whoever the third guy yeah yeah exactly yeah
they should play mcmahon center uh they should scott lawton five points in 11 games since going
to la including three goals he had 12 points in 43 as a leaf this year roughly a third of his
points have come since moving to la in roughly one third of the games played it's great because
you can look at McMahon and be like fire Brad
immediately and then you can look at Lawton and be
like fire
immediately and actually
kind of both of them you know what's funny the LA
the LA Kings who can't score and definitely can't
win in regulation
with Scott Lawton in their lineup he's gone from
a .27 PPG in Toronto
because he was playing fourth line I'm amazed it was even
that high to a .45
PPG in LA
we fucking
wasted that guy let's just call it
what it is we fucking wasted him
you you paid a premium to get a third line center who you played fourth line wing
and then the next year he was fourth line by the way nick wah three of his eight goals this season
have come in his 11 games with the abs as well that's great that's good that's good uh if you
don't think coaching is an issue because i still get people on my streams going it's not berube's
fault i i'm begging you to watch the games well there's there's a notion out there that he's one
of the few players or sorry he's one of the few people holding the players to account kate they're
not listening to you yes that's not that's the gig that's the gig yeah oh yeah coach walks in
the locker room goes play good hockey or else or else like yeah no that's the gig is having a
message and then getting buy-in hey he can't do it well the one guy that's buying is cali
yarn croak and look it's been a hell yeah and look at him here comes the back nine like
you know and there's a larger argument of well maybe this core is not capable of listening to
a coach all right well that's a broader conversation but this coach has had a message
that's fallen flat for like six months.

scotia bank you're richer than you think
so lastly guys uh blue jays start this season the blue jays uh and i just want to know i want
to know this obviously the vibes are killer right the vibes are amazing they were so close to winning
and jesse you're doing the live stream tonight which we're thrilled about okay
mm-hmm i'm a toronto sports fan psychologically here's what i feel i feel really good but i also
can remember times when say the raptors got eliminated by the 76ers made a bunch of great
ads the next season and really underperformed do i need to brace myself for that this year with the
jays because i'm a i'm not a boston sports fan right not a new york sports fan or a florida
panthers or tampa bay lightning sports fan right california sports fan in the 2010s i am a leafs
Blue Jays, Raptors
I'm a Toronto sports fan
are we lucky
enough to get a good
team more than one year in a row
Jesse
it's iffy
because the
American League East is really good
so it depends on
if you think the Orioles
aren't going to be the team that everybody
thought they were going to be
coming into last year because that's a team that won
the al east two years ago and it's like what if they have a rebound year you know they bring in
pete alonso you think the yankees who haven't changed much who were the best team in the
division at the second half of the the season people forget like the jays barely squeaked out
the american league east title by the end of it so if they hold fort and how good they are if the
red sox and their young players like roman anthony don't take another step you know there's a team
who also made the playoffs last year but they're just missing a little bit more if they don't also
take a step there the blue jays are going to be in tough it's not just this is a really good
baseball team in the blue jays and we should expect them to uh dominate this division or
anything like that this is going to be a a hard-fought year if they are going to repeat
as american league east champions i think they'll at least be a wild card team but it won't be easy
getting there they need to start off the season well which they have failed to do like throughout
this entire shapiro atkins era they usually don't start off too good so i'm hoping this year we have
a good spring for the jays and that momentum just carries throughout the summer now does it factor
in for you that go jays it does ace i assume ace is primed to have the best year of his entire
career are you ready for the best seventh inning stretch okay okay blue jays blue jays let's play
ball adam can i seed jay's talk for what might have been the most important eastern conference
game that happened yes oh sure yeah the montreal canadians playing the columbus blue jackets
because that didn't that hasn't made no no we have to stick to the bit where we don't talk
about the habs no because we hate them we do um we do no i'm kidding because that's the game that
made my illegal stream yesterday because you know because the nhl is awesome and there's no way to
watch the habs game on a thursday legally in toronto so so you just didn't watch the no no
i watched it but nothing changed with this game oh you went to the bar thing the thing that there
There was a lot on the line there if Ottawa was able to win their game, right?
There there was consequences depending on how the other matchups fair.
But the game itself for the Habs, I think they have an answer on their goaltending situation.
Jakob Dobish has got to be their number one starter going into the playoffs.
They've solved that.
He was fantastic in that game.
They got outshot, got outshot a whole bunch in that first period.
he held them in and then they're able to get a goal uh by jordan strubel who deserves a shout
out first goal of the season for him and then they and then so it's the lane hudson situation
i don't know i don't what is going to spark your interest from this game oh because we got
jacob dobish clear number one in montreal we got lane hudson giveth lane hudson taketh eastern
eastern bouchard uh in a different way he's no schaefer is what i i i think that that i'm seeing
a little eyebrows go up there because he's he's i'm gonna call him the pinch god yeah because he
can't because he's so mobile because because he can he's often over committing on the offensive
end and it led directly to a goal after he directly caused a goal for montreal so it's
lane hudson giveth lane hudson taketh and then it's columbus not being able to do the extra
thing to get the extra goal when they are dominating on the play and then uh brendan
gallagher even said at the end of the second period that they uh they stunk you know they're
that during his uh end of intermission interview there and they had to fight through that and they
did and then it was frankie corrado's birthday yes oh okay well that way like that that's the
most important part of the game absolutely we love frankie and then maybe that's the most i think
that's what i care about you know what i and i guess it did have an outcome because the penguins
did sort of leapfrog uh columbus back into second and the islanders won last night too which we
didn't mention and that means they're back in the playoff picture uh well it's just gonna there
there's gonna be leapfrogs literally every show yeah totally yeah for the leapfrogs matter more
oh yeah oh yeah so okay fine sorry uh i guess the other ones i don't know if this one sparks
your interest but i thought there was a lot coming out of that game um the they had a stat a graphic
about offense from defensemen and the montreal canadians are second in the league in points by
defenseman this season so they have 194 points by defenseman the other teams in the top four
number one is the colorado avalanche 198 points from defenseman killmaker number three the buffalo
sabers 187 points from defenseman and number four the columbus blue jackets 183 points from
defenseman what is the same about those four teams uh they're in the playoffs they're good
oh yeah if you want to take it to the least if you want to take it yeah all the other teams in
the league that's Wierenski that's Darlene that's Hudson that's Kale McCarr yeah and we often talk
about the number one center and the goaltending but the puck moving offensive defenseman is where
the league is at right now and the good teams all have that yeah and they all share the qualities
of getting tremendous offense from the back end and we saw the first two goals of that game by
Struble and Severson
scored by defensemen.
Well, Jesse, have you considered
that the Leafs are trying to win the
2019 Stanley Cup seven years later?
And they might actually be able to pull it off.
Have you considered
that?
Bradshaw Living is honestly
building a team
to beat the Ducks
in their cup run.
Baruba's the worst kind of coach.
i won so here's how you do it forever the failing of lou lamorello kyle dubas and now brad for
living none of them recognized the leafs needed a number one defenseman the mirage was that riley
ever was the stats never supported it he was a number two at some points like truly not not in
his play you need those uh but he was a number two for sure for three or four years there he was
never a number one they never got it you can't do it without it sorry you can't one follow-up jesse
uh pinch god for lane hudson i have a better nickname yeah and put to sell which is a little
salt right oh that's good and put to sell that's french see steve's not like the air canada ceo
he won't get in trouble for not speaking french i know so much duolingo french yeah you know it's
so funny he got summoned to ottawa for not doing that thing in french he's not summoned to ottawa
up for his bullshit ticket prices come on man that's what i'd be asking him about what's up
with that all right more lane hudson propaganda corner he has now 70 points on the season he got
the got that assist already talked about great montreal canadian defenseman with 70 or more
points in a season larry robertson robin robinson said robertson oh force a habit nick robertson
gila point and chris chelios that is the company and then lane hudson sorry that is the list
every time lane hudson makes puts into one of these uh gets into the record book for the
canadians he's going to be joining all-time great nhlers because that is all montreal has
so he's off to an unbelievable start to his career and he's just entering this pantheon
of montreal canadiens greats it's really cool to watch so three of those are in the 80s which
means they don't count um the number two by larry robinson that was 1986 when they won the cup that
year and if i'm not mistaken the other seasons are during the habs stretch of five straight cups
yep and then lane hudson holy shit oh lane hudson's number nine as well
yeah that is nuts i'm looking forward to him climbing the list so i was gonna say
at the he's got uh less than 10 games to go or how many they got they got like 11 total maybe
oh no he's played 71 this season two power play yeah there you go um 11 to go how high on this
list does he climb does he get top three yes yes does he break the record he needs six point no
15 points in 11 games he could do it he's guaranteed top three i think guaranteed
guarantee he has to play them all he's gonna do 100 point year he's gonna do it he's gonna get
30 points no no no he's gonna do it he did it he can do it he's gonna do it that'd be cool
Carlson did it too I yeah Lane Hudson is absolutely going to do that that one Sheldon
Surrey season not being in the top 10 is the Habs are so insane especially with where the game was
at that point yeah yeah 26 goals 38 assists nuts I think at the end of this season yeah he's going
to be it's gonna be Larry Robinson Nick Robertson and Lane Hudson in most points by defenseman in
Montreal Canadiens history all right Jesse I think that's fine now do the Leafs pull up the
least i don't want to right do it do it i don't want because because riley had a 72 point year
so that's got to be top three at least but do it i need you to do it all right here we go all right
this is going to be sad and pathetic are you guys ready what if you did yon turnbull 79 points and
then the rest of it's salming and riley oh sorry i don't know what i said yin turnbull why did i
say that's okay i don't know why i said that uh morgan riley at number five okay 72 points and
it's not terrible it's actually way better than i thought yeah yeah yeah but boria what a god
really carry today yeah i i remember that 43 44 babe pratt season
i remember it well that was a good year story of the year yeah that was a good year and larry
murphy's at 15th elite fans are like get the fuck out of here get out of here ran this poor guy out
the town i loved larry murphy and i was so excited when they got him i remember that
oh anyway all right that's it i needed to get in the propaganda for the montreal canadians
you know what we'll just call it propaganda corner with jesse blake i'm gonna bring up
every montreal canadians game zachary bull duke scored the first time since uh this year this
calendar year he hadn't scored since december so that's a good game that was a bad trade for both
i think i don't think logan mayu's been very good uh he's turned it on has he turned it on okay all
right all right fine but it's the blue i don't want to give dark arms around anything but when
he comes to toronto then i'll be like he's a genius uh when your top guys aren't going you
got goals from bull duke and strubel you know so that's a good hockey team depth scoring fire the
extra enough of this montreal canadians you know watch out watch out you watch out now you watch
show i've had it upset city had it adobe spring adobe spring i don't know guys alan's not gonna
like that but i'm feeling it the steve dangle podcast follow the guys on twitter at steve
underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
