Starting point is 00:02:01 some guy we've never heard of chris johnston uh swiss team hc ajui ajui ajui don't look at me i've never heard j-o-i-e fired head coach greg ireland at least i can pronounce that today while trailing ambry piota three nothing in a relegation playoff series i'm gonna say i'm gonna to say as well okay sure uh we should call julian uh we should so they're they're trailing 3-0 in a relegation playoff series meaning that if they don't win they go to the league below and essentially they think well that will inspire them to come back and i get firing a coach in that instance because you're about to get kicked out of the league you're in and you're gonna fire that coach anyway exactly i think that's what vegas thought i think that's exactly what they

Starting point is 00:02:46 thought with bruce cassidy we're gonna fire him anyway so bruce cassidy is officially gone just to let everybody know who may who might have missed it bruce cassidy gone in vegas with like eight games to go in comes john tortorella bruce cassidy being fired guys was not really the surprise john tortorella coming in is the surprise no they're both the surprise i well i mean we just spent all last week talking about how uh you you said it mitch martyr being used at center is wrecking your 12 million dollar asset yes but what and this is why vegas is such an outlier in the nhl they're interesting they do things that well no i think i'm done they do things they take action they take action and they think outside the box and like lula amorello used to be kind

Starting point is 00:03:34 of on an island as the weird one for firing coaches late season but like we just explained the logic and it's the easiest thing in the world you're gonna fire this guy anyway your team stinks you might miss the playoffs fire them now and get someone in there to light a fire under the team why not look why the hell not the the the wording of john tortorella's hiring is so funny like uh he's signed for the remaining eight games of the season what he's gonna be your head coach for less than 10 of the season and then the playoffs are gonna start yeah i don't know man it's as good an idea as any the trade deadlines passed you can't do anything about that all you can do is fire your coach and get another guy the real question is is this the other guy jesse is this

Starting point is 00:04:20 the other guy for you is john tortorella the guy you would have picked up the phone and called i think this is the most fun outcome and the most correct outcome okay to galvanize your troops for eight games in a playoff run why not get the most fiery guy in hockey i think john tortorella is a perfect pick and and like stylistically they're not gonna forget how to play bruce cassidy hockey stylistically who cares what you were doing wasn't working that too whatever you're doing that's gonna be new is at least gonna be hockey that you know is different than the losing hockey you've been playing this entire season did uh those j fresh stats that were posted yesterday give you any pause where since the olympic break vegas is like top three in virtually everything but

Starting point is 00:05:06 near dead last in shooting percentage and save percentage i didn't see those but what i do know is that collectively what's come out since cassidy's been fired is that the players have quit on the coach yeah and whether or not the underlying analytics support that there's a better team there or not the team in the locker room did not like that man anymore and i know there is a couple of different reports. I heard the one from Elliot about how at the end of last postseason's loss to the Edmonds and Oilers, he chewed them out and he put a lot of blame on the players for them losing that series. And then in their exit meetings with the upper brass, Kelly McCrimmon and co, they were not happy with Bruce Cassidy and he decided to keep them.

Starting point is 00:05:51 So then all of that festering, and then you go into this season where there's a bunch of losing and you're not getting any goaltending and then you reach this point and now Kelly McCormick is making a decision he probably maybe should have made last year when the guys were unhappy with him. So even if the underlying numbers support there's a better team there,

Starting point is 00:06:10 the person who's going to get the better team out of them and show that the underlying numbers are actually true is a new head coach. If anything, they're a good team and now they've got like one of the best hot start coaches in like of his generation literally of his generation john tortorella's mo except for vancouver is he goes in to every team lights a fire under him they play better than we seem um they achieve more than we thought they were capable of

Starting point is 00:06:44 and then eventually it goes stale now let me usually takes two three four years let me poke a hole in that okay just just a little bit and this is from sin bin vegas great great account so one of the most common refrains about the reasoning behind bringing john tortorella in is that he quickly gets the most out of teams history remembers it differently tortorella's first 10 games with a new team philadelphia five five and oh missed the playoffs that wasn't a great team i mean columbus two eight no missed the playoffs okay yeah but then what happened very good team five four and one missed the playoffs yeah new york six three and one first round loss tampa one nine and oh that wasn't a great team uh new york uh rangers the first time

Starting point is 00:07:21 oh three one well i didn't mean the first 10 games okay well that's all he's got right no no of course no exactly right and that's what makes us so unique and so different can i also step in on something can i be narrative guy for a second oh do it let me let me just be pain in the ass narrative say his name um no no i'm not gonna say his name i'm gonna i say his name this happened before he got there i know it did that's why it's funny the players didn't like that the coach chewed them out at the end of the season now let me tell you something i streamed all those games so i watched every one of them i watched every minute of it um that was a great series by the way you thought so the vegas edmonton one i don't think yeah yeah no that was back and forth i

Starting point is 00:08:07 remember like vegas uh had a couple really close calls and they kept losing um i thought that was a really entertaining series yeah but it was maybe you're maybe well here's what i was only five games yeah it was over it was like a tight five yeah i felt rod brindamore special i felt like it wasn't great at all and i i thought that vegas blew a lot of opportunities maybe it was closer than i remember but vegas blew a lot of opportunities and largely played like shit And I do think it's kind of funny that like compared to what they're used to, right, compared to the expectations that we have of Vegas, which are quite high, that they rightly set themselves. I looked at that series and I thought, man, I'm I'm not seeing any sort of dominance from this team. There's a lot of star power up front and they are they were not dominating play.

Starting point is 00:08:56 Goaltending was fine, but I just felt like there was it was not a. the way I remember it anyway is that they should have been chewed out they blew an opportunity against against Edmonton and they didn't really make it particularly close and so the players I understand after the season's over the last thing you hear from your coach is getting chewed out that kind of sucks but like are did you guys go back and watch I want everyone to remember this I really want everyone to remember this particular part of the conversation going forward especially when talking about your team and i am looking at leafan specifically but this could apply to anyone think of who's on the vegas golden knights right and great great team jack eichel

Starting point is 00:09:41 olympic gold medalist and he won the cup with them right who else won a gold medal there hannifin they have other olympians in stone and theodore and marner was there this season but we're going of focus on last season particularly yeah the guys that they they had last year some incredible players and getting yelled at for performing poorly in the playoffs is something that they took to heart and are somewhat holding a grudge over right so there's no you know the the conversation is always and this pertains to berube and the leafs a lot and oh he's he's uh old school hard ass and this generation of players doesn't understand or blah blah blah i think it's a much bigger generation divide than it is oh the players on my team are soft

Starting point is 00:10:43 this is not the way to talk to your players anymore totally you're not gonna get the best out of them that's true no right i think you've nailed it like he's trying to do an old school way and yeah chew out guys and and do all that nonsense and i'm not surprised that players in 2025 26 aren't responding positively to those kind of yell that kind of yelling what look at paul maurice paul maurice is our greatest example ah screw it look at john cooper too those guys have been to six straight cup finals between them uh john cooper i think is essentially a motivational speaker as well as a philosopher and litigator but paul marie's like they die for that guy oh yeah and there's that clipper he goes you fuckers and but he follows it up by going

Starting point is 00:11:32 here's what i need you to do it's not you're not good enough you're doing this poorly you fuck that up it's pound their fucking d so that when game seven arrives they've got nothing left it's a great quote it's such an efficient message you're not doing what i want you to do comma here's what i want you to do and this will be the result if you do it that's how you communicate oh yeah and primaries also loves being performative and when he's trying to give credit to somebody he's like you know why we won the stanley cup playoffs because the fourth line against the league gag me with the damn spoon everybody credited the stanley cup victory on i do the fourth line changing the series against the least come on and the irony but that's the

Starting point is 00:12:25 thing he's doing he's giving the credit to the guys the end of the bench the the credit belongs to paul maurice for changing them he changed that matchup and the series flipped on its head matthews was going toe-to-toe with barkov and from minute one of that series i went well let's see how that goes matthews caved his teeth in the second he threw it to lundell lusterine and marshand it was over palmer yes the fourth line had a great game yes yes they didn't yes they helped flip the series but the biggest decision that maurice made is what changed He was patting himself on the back while trying to give a compliment to the other guys, the players on the team. It was such nonsense garbage, but that's the stuff that works.

Starting point is 00:13:10 And Bruce Cassidy seems like he didn't really have that last year with the Vegas Golden Knights. And didn't have it this year. One of the things, so I'm... Also, Adam, can I defend my point that that series last year, Edmonton-Vegas, was entertaining? Okay, yeah. I'm not saying it wasn't entertaining. I just didn't find it to be as close as... I think it was that close.

Starting point is 00:13:29 So four out of the five games were bangers because game one was a 2-0 lead by Vegas. They had it early on. Edmonton comes back. They have a 4-2 victory. Game two was a 5-4 OT game where Edmonton was up 3-1 and Vegas comes all the way back, makes it 4-4 and they go to end overtime and then Edmonton wins it. And then game three or game four was a 4-3 victory by Vegas. No, game three was the 4-3 victory. Oh, game three was the 4-3 victory where Vegas is up 2-0.

Starting point is 00:14:05 Or Edmonton's up 2-0. Vegas comes all the way back, scores four goals unanswered. And then the last game, then we had a stinker in there. It was 3-0. And the last game was 0-0. And it went to overtime and was a 1-0 victory. That series from an entertainment standpoint last year was a banger. um can i can i offer a counter where three of those games started at 10 p.m yeah i was i was

Starting point is 00:14:29 streaming them i was there but i know i want to say the game that's what i'm saying real hockey fan over here i think the game that sticks out to me is is the um is game four i think that's what i remembered from that series which is why maybe it's colored my view first off they couldn't score and they still they couldn't score into this year they could not score against the oilers that was a problem in the series the game four was a wet fart that was that was one least level bad they were they put 23 shots on Stuart Skinner unforgivable yeah unfair I don't care how high or how low your shooting percentage is you ain't gonna win it's Stuart Skinner pepper the man with some shots I think perhaps that the wheels were coming off probably at the playoffs and

Starting point is 00:15:10 you're right Jesse I think you made a good point about Kelly McCrimmon and and that sort of thing I understand why they would keep Cassidy another year to find out. Maybe they should have fired him in December. Like the Leafs should have fired Berube. We could have done a switch. Season could be so much different. Can you imagine? But I want to, I think, I think that Vegas's issue is,

Starting point is 00:15:31 they might think it's coaching. And I don't, I think Kelly McCrimmon knows it's not. I think that's why he didn't fire the coach. But the players are not responding and it's clear they quit on him. There's nothing they can do but fire the coach. But then here's my thing. Yeah. And I said this about Marner when he went to Vegas,

Starting point is 00:15:48 and I got some pushback from behind the scenes from people. There is nothing, like, you think playing in Toronto is hard? Externally. Playing in Vegas internally is the hardest in the league. You said that from day one. They'll cut your shit, man. And you just saw it again. And so now that torts is in.

Starting point is 00:16:06 The standard is so, so, so much higher. Some guys will die for torts. Some people would rather die than play for torts. depends on who you're playing also i think it's hilarious that vegas and anaheim could meet in the in the playoffs cutter goche versus john tortorella hilarious but oh i didn't even think of that i want to i want to i want to say that john better come in and just be mr motivation this is not a team that needs x's and o's anymore play martyr on the wing and and just do the simple shit and they're going to be fine dude get along for two months i just feel like this let's just call it

Starting point is 00:16:40 what it is they're older than they should be yeah they're more busted than they should be yeah and they keep going back to the same people one of the things that was that marked vegas out as such an outlier in the nhl is they'd be like thanks so much for your service now fuck off they were logan roy right but then they started bringing back the old band guys kind of like what chicago did after their third cup i got a message last night unironically they're like tell me i'm wrong Vegas should trade Marner and they explained all the reasons why the reason what would be the reason well and I responded you are wrong you are wrong period I think you trade around Marner before you trade Marner yeah Marner I went you are wrong period but and you know that it's there

Starting point is 00:17:27 guys but I look at I look at Vegas and I go okay I'm there are other factors here and so now that the coach has been fired now it's on the players and what I saw last week was I saw Edmonton go toe-to-toe with the two teams it's fighting in the pacific division and they will meet one of them either in the first or the second round depending upon whether or not vega or edmonton passes the ducks which they might they smacked the ducks around on saturday and they beat vegas last week if edmonton and vegas play in the first round i don't know a single person right now that thinks yet that that edmonton doesn't win that series well it's changed though because the conversation was edmonton's winning that series and now it's well i don't know well because it's mystery you

Starting point is 00:18:11 didn't like a coach that yelled at you so they bring in the guy who the beatings the beatings will continue until morale improves yeah but there's different kinds of yelling there's different kinds and everybody goes back to well cam atkinson sure loves him and you know what i love cam atkinson but it's got to be more than cam here i have questions about tortorella so What is the entire city of Philadelphia, by the way? Oh, I mean, every team he's ever been with, it's easy to remember the end, right? Sure.

Starting point is 00:18:43 You got to remember what it was like in the good days, though. You can't tell me there weren't good days in Tampa. You can't tell me there weren't good days in New York. There were. You can't tell me there weren't good days in Columbus, right? A few good days in Vancouver. Maybe just Toronto. there was a time where philly was punching above its weight and you know tortorella and that was a

Starting point is 00:19:06 very deeply flawed roster let's call it whatever tortorella was unfortunately a little too honest in basically being like i don't want to be part of a rebuild well i got great news for you it's eight games i want to say he got fired eight games left in the season with philly so you get to pick up right where you left off last year except you're with a contender now this this is the uh choose your own adventure book that you were talking about he skipped forward too so the playoffs are in two weeks yes it's it's a total mystery right now that i was trying to find a clip i don't know which podcast it was but they had matt calvert on remember matt calvert i do so he he's talking about like i pride myself on on uh you know being a good playoff performer

Starting point is 00:19:49 and there was this one game where columbus i guess wasn't doing so well and john tortorella comes in he goes boys matt calvert's our best forward and for a second it's like yeah oh yo i need to find i saw it this morning i was just like that's perfect well that's exactly what he is this is what i wanted to ask though does torts coming in because remember when he was hired in philadelphia jesse and steve it was we need a fundamental shift in our culture every time torts gets hired it's we need vancouver we need a fundamental shift in the way we play in our culture winnipeg sports talk sorry that's what it was is vegas is that what i mean they're not telegraph they're not saying that but are they telegraphing that if you read between the lines

Starting point is 00:20:37 that's what it says to me is we you don't hire john tortorella because you like the way your culture has been and maybe kelly mccrimmon's too old school to realize perhaps that maybe that's not but that is every time he's brought in somewhere it's like well he's sure gonna set them right does that mean that they're thinking we might have a culture issue there's zero chance this decision was made without the consult of at least jack eichel and probably noah hannifin too because he was just their assistant coach but jack eichel's crazy you've seen jack eichel's game day routine yeah i'm sure that would fit towards perfectly well and what would screw up his routine more than firing the coach oh you're right right so there's obviously i don't know if

Starting point is 00:21:23 it's a culture issue it's definitely a motivation issue and so you're looking to press every button you possibly can it's wild that there were there were there are many coaches available who haven't coached a game this season one of them's John Tortorella the other one's Pete DeBoer I know he's like they already did that he's waiting they already did that with Pete DeBoer so to the torts well they go and this is this is the most fascinating wild card in the playoff picture right now Chas what do you got up on your screen there what are you looking I just wonder if George McPhee should be looking at Kelly McCrimmon's job and if we should be questioning his decision making over the last calendar year ish maybe like two years ish because like that

Starting point is 00:22:13 playoff series wasn't great and what they've gone out and done is more of the same words we load up on the same stars we want the mitch marner acquisition is is a great acquisition i don't think i don't think anyone can argue with that no you go beyond the mitch marner acquisition and you wonder if rasmus anderson just because okay he wants to go to vegas doesn't mean you have to want him in vegas you are you sure that that's the right piece you need not filling in the gap i'll hammer this all day long not filling in the gap that william carlson has left all season long is a mortal sin you can't do that carter hart's been a disaster it hasn't played can't be healthy what why are your expectations that this guy who had to sit out so many months

Starting point is 00:22:56 of playing hockey because of his criminal case uh and he could just hop in in november october and just be good again that was ridiculous assumption by you Aiden Hill hasn't played particularly well Akira Schmidt isn't your answer there you haven't solved the goaltending problem that you clearly have I know Aiden Hill got you a Stanley Cup so you want to keep riding with him but you are supposed to be the ruthless guy and you haven't been ruthless there in net by finding a competent solution so I I think there needs to be some discussion about like should George McPhee look at Kelly McCrimmon's job and maybe move on at the end of the season and there should be a coveted job uh for gm one because it's vegas two you are going to acquire one of the top offensive

Starting point is 00:23:38 players in the league next season um without even having to use a pen stroke you're going to acquire mitch marner yeah yeah you'll be better by literally just playing him at right wing you have some man who looks a lot like him and does some of the things that he does he's not a sever what are you doing yeah they're gonna find some solution where they have a top six that actually sticks and you find him a centerman and maybe it's william carlson and just by process of being healthy again everything is kind of fine in vegas again which i could totally see but you you've had a wasted season now could i be unfair and i know vegas has thought about this so they're unfair also kelly mccrimmon 65 you can find someone younger than that like you i mean you got to be

Starting point is 00:24:31 looking at a at a succession plan anyway even if things were going well he's 65 yeah so it's interesting you know when you read jesse granger's article uh on the firing in the athletic you know one of the things he talks about is is why they won in 2023 right and they really had depth and that's when i when i referenced them getting the band back together i'm talking specifically about like riley smith brandon sod stuff like that guys that to be honest with you brandon sod was not very useful for them against the oilers last year in the second round and so they what did they do they were like great stick around please riley smith is going to be a leaf in one of my watch say four no way no way he's from mimico but i think it's gonna happen you know what getting

Starting point is 00:25:15 the band back together though suggests to me is like let's get everyone feeling good well i don't think the vibes have been very high in vegas i don't i don't think they have either but but they already did that yeah what if they're not good they did that last year they got sought at the deadline and they brought back riley smith was it last summer or the summer before i thought it was this past summer yeah whatever i don't went to nashville or something um here's here's something that's interesting you know when you take big swings and you need to uh and i've always respected vegas for this hey is there a big name out there we're in on them but what that does is it top uploads your team which we know nothing about in toronto and you lose your depth and so one of the

Starting point is 00:25:54 guys that that they i think they brought in uh that they were expecting more from was thomas hurdle who's going at 71 points at even strength in 153 games helps on the power play but that's you know point of game less than sorry less than half a point of game on even strength that's why he's playing on the third line and and then i just don't vegas has got has is getting outscored 77 94 with him on the ice at even strength oh okay well that's quite bad uh in the first season of his eight-year 96 million dollar contract marner is on pace for one of his first worst statistical seasons of his career his 71 points are a stark decline from the 102 that he put up last season in toronto but we talked about that i think that's him playing center and it's

Starting point is 00:26:36 awkward he makes he makes find a way money you know what i mean but at some point he does make find away money he makes find away money but at some point it's absurd that you're playing him at center well it's the same argument with matthews yes he makes find away money but when alexander ovechkin just took his first defensive zone start in game 73 right and matthews is making like 60 of his from the defensive zone yeah you're using him incorrectly right find a way but also maybe don't play this player like he's dave steckle help yeah help him help him he's not yannick perot like let's go so and he says hannifin and anderson have been solid additions but they haven't offset the loss of alex petrangelo and uh vegas's blue line was

Starting point is 00:27:19 arguably the best in the league in 2023 now doesn't appear to suit cassidy's system which works so well because of guys like petrangelo white cloud and nick hagg who have all well especially those all three of those guys are gone in the last 20 or 12 months so and brayden mcnabb is 35 years old my question is um how much of that can you now undo okay so let's say let's say torts comes in he does a great job they get to the second round they lose and they lose to anaheim i don't know let's say maybe edmonton wins i don't know it doesn't matter okay so that's not good enough for vegas what then do you do you're locked into hurdle you hope william carlson is healthy next year and doesn't decline but he has been there for

Starting point is 00:28:01 eight years now the entirety of the franchise eichel's contract goes up to 13 and a half million dollars next year so if jesse's right and kelly mccrimmon shouldn't be the gm anymore the next guy that comes in is probably going to have to come in as well if there's a big star out there we're in on him because we're vegas how do you how do you untangle this now because we're getting into territory where it gets a little uncomfortable that conversation it does the good thing is you have good players that's always a good start and you have that means you have assets you can trade those guys you're gonna have to make good old-fashioned hockey trades probably because you don't really have any futures but what's what surprised me is like

Starting point is 00:28:43 with the center situation is the complete lack of creativity i mean i guess using marner at center is creativity but like okay maybe uh common sense which is play a center yeah anyone anyone yeah anyone pick a name like last show we went through some names like guys who are part-time centers like a like a howden for anyone yeah what are you doing so how do you untangle this there are many ways right um with the draft there with free agency there there are many ways but this was the only way to untangle it now and don't forget anderson's a ufa oh giving up what you gave up for him and potentially losing him what did they give up for him i can't even remember what that trade was because you guys said the the unforgivable

Starting point is 00:29:30 sin was not getting another centerman it may be hurdle at this point his career is better as a winger and you find the center that goes behind william carlson right and whatever maybe he's the guy who shouldn't be playing center whatever they gave up for anderson i can guarantee you it would have got them vinny it was white cloud a second round pick that upgrades to a 2028 first round pick if vegas wins the stanley cup so second round pick and a first round pick in 2027 that is top 10 protected and moves to 28 if vegas won the cup in 26 and 27 first is top 10 it's 2027 first and a 2028 second round tell you what man that was that would have got you those conditions and also uh abram weeby that is quite a bit and let me let me tell you you get a

Starting point is 00:30:17 puck mover in Anderson, but losing white cloud when you're, you already hemorrhaged kind of puck stopping talent and you're not getting saves. Like if you're, it's not, it's not great, man. If you're game planning, um, uh, if you're Anaheim or you're Edmonton and you're game planning Vegas is your whole, your whole job, because both of them have high powered offenses, get the puck behind and rebound get the puck around those defensemen keep the puck away from them your your thought has to be we can outgun them yes yeah especially with weak goaltending yeah which the goaltending hasn't been good and they can't score they can't score they're shooting since the olympic break they're shooting i think it was 6.8 percent as a team that's crazy

Starting point is 00:31:05 so anyway we're going we're going through all the ways that we're twirling towards freedom right now twirling we're talking about all the ways that vegas hasn't been good lately this is this is hail mary you got other than like one of these days i would like to see a team trying to make the playoffs make a post-deadline trade with a player who will not be eligible for the playoffs for them but you got to get in so it doesn't matter like that that to me is the last creative frontier that teams haven't really done um but saving that you need a new coach and what what bigger jolt of adrenaline could you get than john tortorella well we're gonna hold there let's do the bet mgm big story because i have a question about this when we get into it sometimes life
