Starting point is 00:00:49 S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! Gentlemen, I got one question. Are you taking back your Nick Robertson takes from last episode? No.
Starting point is 00:01:07 You say he's not making the team, he comes out, puts on a game like that. Wait, was it three assists? It was, well, and they were pretty too. Yeah. They were real pretty. You sure? I mean, okay. I need to be
Starting point is 00:01:22 Dubas has been accused of being obnoxiously process oriented I've been accused of being obnoxiously wishy-washy oh have you yes well not wishy-washy it's just I
Starting point is 00:01:38 I'll be like this is what I believe and then like I love this goalie and then this goalie will have a bad game and I'll go uh oh yeah no I'm sticking to my process which is one preseason game against a team that's not supposed to do very well is not going to change my opinion and it's it's not a diss of nick robertson i spent all summer defending the guy and now all of a sudden i'm the poster boy for hating hating
Starting point is 00:02:09 nicky bobby if you want to if you want the poster boy for that the person for that is to your left oh yeah jesse fuck yeah every morning i get up and i look in the mirror and i say that guy hates nick robertson damn yeah and that's what i do do you do arrogant stuff like you put your hand down at your chest and you're like yeah that's where the top of his head is no you talk about how much taller than you are do that i don't one pre-season game isn't gonna change my mind everything uh we said on the previous show about nick robertson is true on everything we've seen about nick robertson i don't think we were saying anything um that would change with one game he's gonna be good yeah he's gonna be good but like listen every year players get screwed because realistically
Starting point is 00:03:00 they're the team's like 10th 11th 12th forward but because they're waiver eligible they go down right and we stress during that conversation on how young this gentleman is this is a still a prospect as as much as we want to graduate him to the nhl this is still somebody who's in their development and learning professional hockey and he's gonna get better and there's gonna take some time to figure out all the things that he needs to figure out like the shot the shot might be a lot better than uh we think it is right now it's goofy it's it's pretty good uh but there's a lot of extra things he needs to work on especially on the defensive side of the game and especially in his skating there's a lot of running around and one game in a preseason that doesn't count
Starting point is 00:03:43 isn't going to change all that we need to see it for his professionals and real games and real hockey and we'll see how he develops like there's a lot of promise there's a lot of good things in the future for nick robertson i just want to say that um for everybody who reached out and said all three of you please do not lump me in with these two i am pro nick robertson being on the least roster because i think they need somebody who adds a little more offensive punch and i think new roberts is going to make it and i think he's going to play a minimum 41 games this year that's my that's my prediction i think that's a good prediction to make interesting because he's injury prone he's gonna he's gonna make the team but he's not gonna play this season he's gonna
Starting point is 00:04:18 get injured oh i don't you feel like that's worse than yes it's far worse you're worse it's far worse i feel like that's worse it was a joke it was a joke i think he's making the team you gotta go into everything with okay now this is important an important distinction because some people are like hey engvall's out he should make the team no no no no no no we're not starting this young man in the nhl just to send him down when someone gets healthy so when engvall gets back do you have him in the lineup well no but i don't see any reason why you uh why you wouldn't have somebody like him come in and be the guy when guys go down and angle also plays center a lot of the time that's why i think he's more you usually need that more no no i know
Starting point is 00:05:08 that but what i'm saying is that nick roberts is not playing center in the nhl so you need less versatility yeah especially on the but if you've got somebody especially on the top two lines that's out or ding banged up or whatever i don't see any reason why nick robertson couldn't go back and forth and it wouldn't i know i understand everybody's thing about like well what does it do to their confidence but if you sit down with the guy you say listen this is your role and it's not because you're bad it's because we have a role for you and you're going to play a little at the ahl and you're going to play a little in the nhl he's getting the be a pro treatment yeah so you're saying he's going to start the season with the leafs he's going to
Starting point is 00:05:41 score 20 goals in his first eight games yes and then get sent down that's right it'll be more like a hundred if it was be a pro be a pro yeah yeah and then they'd be like oh you get a c rating on that stupid you got pizzazz i didn't understand with with be a pro too is like i played like a perfect hockey game they're like yeah you just need you're not defensive enough you got a b minus out of it yeah what the hell is that how do they make that rating what is that score a goal in the next 20 seconds or we're giving you an f there's your goal too far deviated away from the little arrow thing is that what it is it's been a while since i played clearly i don't hate the idea of nick
Starting point is 00:06:20 robertson having 10 games of the nhl like if he makes the lineup and he gets the 10 games like i'm on adam's i would you could send him back down continuous development down there the one thing i don't want is for him to be a healthy scratch anywhere i don't want him sitting in the press box for the least that's not a thing but if you're gonna play him for eight games and then send him back to the marlies like go ahead i don't even think fourth line makes sense no The court line doesn't make sense, no. No, I think you want him in a position where he's going to flourish, right? You want him to get some offensive zone starts.
Starting point is 00:06:47 No offense to David Koff, but I don't think he needs to be taking defensive zone starts 70% of the time, right? I just don't think he needs to. Not now. Not now. Not this time. No. So here's how the show is going to go today, guys. We're going to do it in two halves.
Starting point is 00:07:01 We sit and wait for Kevin Weeks. Yeah. We're going to have two halves, okay? So we're going to do a little bit at the beginning, a little bit on Barzal, a little bit on the talbot injury in ottawa uh you can bet that and then after that we're going to delve into deeply the the hearings yesterday um and we all watched a little bit of them live the three of us together and i i don't know how we got how we i don't want to call it lucked out but we happen to watch the most embarrassing moments like all the highlights today the low
Starting point is 00:07:31 lights today are the ones that we saw live and we were only able to see about 20 minutes yeah And today's show is going to be a bit shorter because full disclosure, we are finishing up our our our preview episodes, which will come out this weekend. And they are mammoth episodes. They are long. We only have eight left. That's right. And so each so each conference will have an audio version. So you're going to get two shows.
Starting point is 00:07:55 And then all the videos, if you like to watch on video, will come out 10 minutes at a time throughout the weekend. They're just going to come out, keep popping out, and you'll get to see them all as they release. and some of them are going to be out of date and leave me alone yeah leave me alone so i saw kevin weeks go oh keep your eye on dallas and i'm like what if we didn't kevin leave me alone stop doing stuff for like a week for a week uh matt barzell has agreed to an eight-year contract extension that'll kick in next year 9.1 million dollars we talked a little bit in the season preview but nobody's heard that yet matt barzell's got some question marks around him not because the tools aren't there but nobody's fully sure if he's the 80 point guy or the 60 point guy
Starting point is 00:08:37 those the the point totals you gave us or the goal totals yeah it was pretty it's pretty striking on the uh amount of goals he's scored so in the uh so he's already played 360 games which is crazy he's much older than i thought tavaris is last year in the island he had 85 points but he has never scored over 20 goals since he had 22 that year and 63 assists which is a great that's a crazy total but then after that 18 goals 19 goals 17 goals 15 goals some of that's chalked up to Barry Trotz being your coach and your point totals going down but it is it is sort of interesting and probably a good thing for Islanders fans if you want to stack your team with talent that Lane Lambert's going to let this guy open up a little bit and we maybe get to see a little bit more of
Starting point is 00:09:25 what he was in 17-18 this year but a more mature version underratedly about barzal his playoff numbers are absolutely fantastic 38 points in 49 games that's incredible eh yeah for such a young guy too when he was in those long runs don't you just hate him i do no i'm kidding he's actually uh he's alarmingly handsome i got to talk to him in st louis one thing i want to say is i do think and i didn't mention this in the season preview episodes but looking at it now this is a guy with an 11 12 you know shooting percentage his whole career uh he had he was shooting a nine percent last year and you know with 15 15 goals in 73 games this guy's gonna get over 20 goals this year well and isn't it funny that you know for as complicated a sport
Starting point is 00:10:13 as hockey is or some people lead you to believe how often does it just come down to someone going you know matt i think you should shoot and he goes all right coach and then he does it and he scores That was Mitch Marner's thing Hey man, what if you just shot He's also not a goal scorer though That's not his role He's a playmaker He's been a driver of play, he's been a defensive stalwart
Starting point is 00:10:35 He's been an assist man, he's never been a goal scorer Can you read out his junior numbers Because I didn't realize how startlingly Right you are In junior, he scored 14 goals, 12 goals, 27 goals 10 goals. Junior where you're supposed to Light it up, he wasn't even a goal scorer
Starting point is 00:10:51 He's a playmaker but it's the point totals were 54 57 88 79 79 and 41 games yeah and it was all assist driven like they're not they're not paying them all this money to score goals um it's do people expect that like do people expect matt barzal to be a 25 goal scorer because i don't think he's gonna ever live up to that consistently he's gonna be a 50 assist guy yeah well i i do think i think he's i think he's like um not a goal scorer like how mitch martyr is not a goal scorer like yes martyr's not a goal scorer who got 35 goals last year yeah he's no he's not but yes he is but barzal's never come even close to that right that's that's interesting i'd be i'd be i assume the first
Starting point is 00:11:39 thing lane lambert's gonna do is be like all right what if you shot more and his goal total will go up we'll we'll see if it stays that way throughout his career also like we talk about uh how Barry Trotz and the Islanders sort of design things to be more defensive. I also feel like they're actually designed to kind of benefit Barzal a little bit. Like, you know, Brock Nelson and Anders Lee and all those guys who go to the net and everything. You have, everyone involved has a very simple job. You two go to the net.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Matt, you pass it. Matt, you throw it in the net. Yeah, I like that. and that's a solid that's a solid plan i'm excited to watch the islanders this year we talk about in the previews but i'm excited because they were such a disappointment last year um and not necessarily all their fault starting you know the first 15 games on the road doesn't help but they were so good for two years second best team in the league yeah like crazy um i i i don't know what the islanders are but they have one of the best goaltending combos there if matt barzal
Starting point is 00:12:47 is resurgent if andrews lee just continues to just be himself josh bailey continues to be himself injury luck a little bit of that as well yeah yeah it'll be it's going to be fascinating and obviously pelich and pollock are great defensemen um so uh let's move on quickly because we do have to go through this a little bit quickly uh cam talbot is injured in ottawa now he's going to be gone seven eight weeks in ottawa with what team which team was visiting the sentence it's it's a joke you want to fight him i want to fight him sometimes cam talbot cam talbot no i do cam talbot is injured and this is this is the thing um you know for every team's gonna have somebody banged up out of camp because the pre-season is too long murphy's law it's too
Starting point is 00:13:32 long eric angles is right every year when he complains about it and every year i'm like retweeting that tweet thank you very much it's too long it's too much cam talbot's out until november minimum till the end of november you know anton forsberg's so good let's get him a good backup and you plan god laughs as uh jeff merrick and elliot friedman like to say that's that's really unfortunate and it's it's difficult it's a difficult way to start your tenure uh with a brand new team and it's a difficult way to start your season it'll be interesting to see if he can kind of return to form once he does return. And Forsberg
Starting point is 00:14:10 is a good option. If Forsberg does well, and I believe, didn't they... Is a good option. I mean, he's the option, right? Yeah, they claim to goalie off waivers too. I got his name. What's his name? Is it Magnus Helberg? Well done!
Starting point is 00:14:26 Can you tell me the three teams Magnus Helberg played for last year? Well, first off, I'm surprised it's not new jersey but i know it wasn't because he was not one of the seven goaltenders listed and i did my research okay he was claimed from the kraken yes okay so he must have been claimed by the kraken he did not oh you son of a gun that's a trick question uh 31 31 year old uh played four games last year 869 save percentage columbus five games actually i am going to say
Starting point is 00:15:01 I'm going to say Okay submit three And let's see if you can get any Philadelphia Vegas San Jose You guys struck out completely In five NHL games Magnus Elberg has played
Starting point is 00:15:22 For the Nashville Predators New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings I actually did know the Rangers This isn't a player who's had a substantial NHL career at all, and it just speaks to the desperation right now at this point in the preseason where you can't just go
Starting point is 00:15:39 get a goalie. Yeah. It's so funny because right before the pandemic, the goalie market was like the softest goalie market ever. And it's like, oh yeah, you can't give them away. And now it's like, give me all your goaltenders. No, I think, well, because the Sens would have a high,
Starting point is 00:15:56 they'd be high up on the waiver claim. Yeah. I think at least one other goaltender is going to get picked. You do? Off of waivers before the beginning of the season, yeah. Interesting. Not necessarily by them, but by someone.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Okay. Definitely. Definitely. Too many teams still need goaltending. Right. Right. And, yeah. Okay. They also have Kevin Mandolsi in their system. That's made up. That's not a made up person. They should do the
Starting point is 00:16:25 right thing and re-sign Andrew Hammond. Find a way to bring him back. He has a job. It doesn't matter. Bring him back. Does he? Andrew Hammond's playing. Where is Andrew Hammond playing this year?
Starting point is 00:16:35 He didn't play last year. Oh, did he? The Hamburglar. Man, that was so magical. A lot of Leaf fans were like, oh, go Sens. He only played. Oh, he's in Europe. Andrew Hammond only played 67 games in his entire NHL career.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Can you believe that? No, that's it. And after that magical run with the Sens, he signed a three-year deal. And unfortunately, his body was like, what if you needed surgery? so this is crazy because 31 his his record his career record is 31 20 and 7 256 ga 916 save percentage yeah because wasn't he like 21 and 2 or something like that uh yeah 21 and 2 yeah did i nail it yeah you did wow 21 and 2 yeah not not 21 and 20 dash 1 dash 2 that is so absurd For those who would prefer losses count as losses, it's 20-3.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Can you read off his AHL stats from the season he went 21-2 in the NHL? You got a battle? From the AHL? Yeah. No, I don't have his AHL stats. Just you have them up. What are we, like, banging him to him here? Yeah, bingo.
Starting point is 00:17:45 He had an 8-9-8 in the AHL. He was 7-13-2. Got called up to the NHL 21-2 with a 9-4-1 save percentage. because, I'm sorry, goalies are voodoo. They absolutely are voodoo. He wasn't their best AHL goalie, and he came up and was just like, what if I just won every game?
Starting point is 00:18:09 The KHL team he's playing for, Tractor, they're a good team, right? Tractor Chalabinsk. They have a polar bear for a logo, and a few years ago, their arena had all the glass blown out by an asteroid impact in the region. Oh, they were the ones.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Yes. Yeah. All right. I think Anton Forsberg is a good option But it would have been spectacular To see what him and Cam Talbot could do together To start the season That's a great duo
Starting point is 00:18:35 But it's unfortunate that we have to wait until December To see it at full strength If things go well for the Sens in net They can take their time Maybe we don't see Talbot until December Potentially 5-7 weeks is about December But if Forsberg goes down
Starting point is 00:18:52 It's a crisis pretty fast Yeah pretty fast probably wishing they had matt murray still imagine and imagine matt murray gets out just to a rip and start oh yeah fans are just i hope so all right hey let's get into you can bet that sports interaction canada's sport book presents you can bet that with david bastall must be 19 plus please play responsibly ontario only all right dave we told you that we needed to do atlantic and central today because we did obviously pacific and metro last time and you're going to get by the way all the sports interaction
Starting point is 00:19:31 odds on over under in terms of points for our previews this weekend but let's start with the atlantic division which okay look at that who's the number one team in the atlantic division at sports interaction.com slash sdpn oh it's the toronto maple leafs of course at 305 what is that Does that basically guarantee you guys the division? Is that what we're saying? I am not clapping, and I will not hear your jokes, Dave Vassell. How do you? How dare you?
Starting point is 00:20:01 How do you? How do you dare? How do you do? Now, I'm curious here, because the Florida Panthers had such a great year last year. The Tampa Bay Lightning went all the way to the finals again. They're all very close to each other. How do you think the Leafs edged out the Panthers in light? Well, I'll tell you this.
Starting point is 00:20:18 And I think you guys probably know, um, Canadian sports book, heavy in Ontario, tendency of betting on the league number goes down. Right. And yeah, it's, you know what, honestly though, guys, when you look at it though, cause it is okay. So Canadian Sabres, Senators, Red Wings, I think you cross off the list, right? For first place, for first place, they're going to have some nice seasons. Some of them, and some of them are going to be downright terrible.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Now, Boston is kind of a wild card to me. And then you have three of the best teams in hockey as far as I'm concerned, right? So you have a Tampa Bay team that maybe doesn't put out maximum effort during 82 games and then cranks it to 11 during the postseason. Then you have a team like Florida and Toronto. I think it's properly booked right now the way it looks. Oh, yeah. I'm wondering how Florida does with the changes that were made.
Starting point is 00:21:15 because sometimes there's a gelling process at all. I'm also suspect of that goaltending because I think the better goaltender is the younger second goaltender. I'm not sure if he's going to get the proper chance. In the Central Division, Colorado's the one runaway favorite for number one. But what I love, what I love,
Starting point is 00:21:32 and you'll find out in my ranking or in the rankings this weekend, Minnesota Wild at number two. And they're a 495. So that's a pretty good return for a team that's in cap hell. I'm curious about that one. Yeah, I am too.
Starting point is 00:21:47 And I'm looking at that going Marc-Andre Fleury in goal. Are we going to run him out for, what is he, 38, 39 years old? Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer. But, you know, I don't know. I'm circling the St. Louis Blues as a value pick. You get them at about nine to one. I'm wondering if Jordan Binnington can carry the load like you once did a couple years ago. Because last year in the regular season was a little bit of a dropout when he split the duties in goal.
Starting point is 00:22:14 give me nashville and then give me my money you think so what are what's nashville right nashville is at a 1408 wow are you taking nashville i mean to beat the app at those odds okay at those yeah okay that's a value play right yeah fair enough um all right well dave listen we've got a ton of sports interaction content as a part of our previews this weekend so thank you so much as always and we will see you next week when the season actually starts or will Can't wait. Looking forward to it. You bet. We'll see you. Two in five Canadians will hear the words, you have cancer. That's why every step and dollar raised matters.
Starting point is 00:22:52 On September 19th, join thousands in Toronto for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Walk. Challenge yourself, friends, and family to walk 21 kilometers in support of life-saving research. Together, we can carry the fire and help create a world free from the fear of cancer. Register today at pmcfwalk.ca. Okay, so as promised, the back half of this episode is Hockey Canada. And as I said, Jesse and Steve and I had the unfortunate timing, but I think fortunate in terms of following hockey, to jump in on some of the wildest answers from Andrea Skinner,
Starting point is 00:23:34 who I don't even know how one can say these things with a straight face. but if you if you miss these hearings or if you're in the states and you know something slipped by or whatever you can be forgiven for that because you got a life to live i would highly suggest checking out rick westhead and katie strength's twitter accounts because they have threads there that kind of break it all down and actually i'm going to go through katie's because it kind of snakes our way through these hearings a little bit and gives us the highlights in which to kind of jump off on so i think um you know the first thing that you need to know is that after these hearings um there were politicians that were interviewed john nader
Starting point is 00:24:18 who i believe is the perth wellington mp for the conservative party bipartisan bipartisan yeah it was a bipartisan committee right so you've got and in canada if you're unfamiliar with canadian politics you got like five national parties so uh justin trudeau commented today too i don't know if you've seen i didn't see it no it happened very recently basically scolded them again so this is at least the third time the canadian prime minister has commented on the scandal right he said i don't know how hockey canada continues to dig in their heels on this issue and that's what some of the mps said like one of them yesterday was saying listen they seemed contrite in the spring and then they seemed like they were pushing back in the summer and now they
Starting point is 00:24:56 seem like they're being hard-headed about this and they're going to continue to dig their heels in to use that phrase uh in the fall and we'll start with uh former board chair michael brandemore saying that the uh to authorize a sexual assault settlement uh to the woman in 2018 which is the case that kicked all of this off um was because the board felt it would be inappropriate to victimize the young woman in court so they didn't want to fight it um and and board chair andrea skinner i want you to get used to andrea skinner's name because andrea skinner is a relatively new chair of the board and uh what does board chair so you've got in any governing body and i'm going to give this a really basic thing you've got somebody who leads each meeting right you've
Starting point is 00:25:41 got somebody who is the head of of the heads so in a major corporation like bella rogers you're going to have the head of finance you're going to have the head of hr you're going to have the head of the media division the head of the the telecom whatever it is they all have um um responsibilities and they are the board that runs the company and sets the direction and the chair of the board is like the first citizen like the the leader of the of the of the group that leads um so andrea's job really is to when the board votes on things like this is our direction we're going to fund this this is our direction we're going to fund that we're going to change this it's her job uh to help plot direction for hockey canada it's her job to um uh get
Starting point is 00:26:24 board members to vote on the things that she wants to be pushed through it's kind of like being a small president right it's sort of like that's sort of how it works uh in a very very loose way and every board has different governing rules so uh i don't know specifically i haven't read their charter but like you know hockey canada's board would be very different from like bella rogers board um that said andrea skinner and we saw this she told the committee yesterday that she found focusing on toxic behavior in hockey and scapegoating the sport to be, quote, counterproductive, no segment of society is immune. And I'm going to follow that up with the next tweet here, and then we'll get into this a
Starting point is 00:27:02 little bit. Skinner echoes Brindamore, that's Michael Brindamore's sentiments related to the settlement, framing it as Hockey Canada's attempt to spare the young woman from adversarial court proceedings, aggressive defense tactics, said the organization was acting with compassion to the young woman. now i can i can believe i can believe that hockey canada wanted to pay off this person what i cannot believe is that hockey canada wanted to pay off this person because it was in that person's best interests yeah here's three million dollars because we're worried about you yeah we there'd
Starting point is 00:27:51 be a lot of people handing out three million dollar checks if anybody did that nobody does that yeah and uh i don't even know if three million was the number i don't know what the number was i didn't know that was out there it was a lot um so so obviously that's you know that that's a misdirection of truth uh you can you could call it an outright lie but you know you can't really quote unquote you can't prove someone's intent what i can say and i found this shocking and steven there's like an audible gasp in the room when she mentioned this was the fact that she found toxic behavior in hockey and quote unquote scapegoating the sport to be quote counterproductive no segment of society is immune so that's like saying listen
Starting point is 00:28:34 i murdered somebody but other people from other walks of life also murder people it's what it's ridiculous that you're focusing on me it's it's what about ism and you know uh you're listen you're government funded that you're here because people are concerned that uh like really how many fucking times do we have to say this parents are concerned that the registration fees and tax dollars are going towards potentially funding hush money for cases of sexual assault in uh you know a federally somewhat federally regulated uh organization not hard yeah the statement is such a like spit in the face to everybody who's going through this process because what led to the sexual assault was the hockey the toxic hockey culture around it it was
Starting point is 00:29:28 at a hockey can event where there was a bunch of hockey players underage drinking and they had the the events that happened took place because of the event they threw surrounded by hockey and it was well people are acting like hockey is under attack here that's that's what's on trial right now that's what's on hearing and that's not that's just not the case no one watches someone carrying the puck up the ice and go how could you all right no one no one is watching that no one's watching a goal score going you know what we should all feel bad about this sport is not under attack the sport is not under attack the people running it are doing it very inappropriately and we're not talking about where rules are going and there should be less video review and what if we did
Starting point is 00:30:14 away with offsides and things like that we are talking about very specific instances in 2018 there was an alleged sexual assault that the organization that collects registration fees from families and tax dollars from tax paying people in canada they uh took that money or they took some money the money we've talked about that before as well and they gave it to this person as hush money there's also a incident from 2003 that we are barely at the beginning of and supposedly there is a third incident we don't even know when that's from and well and they've said that's gonna happen too there's at least one or two incidences a year right and they admitted that that's why they built this fund and all of that is the culture
Starting point is 00:31:02 that's surrounding the game that is what's on trial here for so for her to sit there and say you know what focusing on that is not the right thing to do no that's what we're entirely here to focus on we're here for that specific issue it's disingenuous and it's how the thread starts so we're immediately beginning these proceedings speaking in bad yeah they're on the defense and they should be apologetic yes yes and and and this is where you're gonna find this throughout like it's funny um if this were a bar i was thinking about this today if this were a bar and and uh we were talking about a bar where people get bottled you know where you get someone hits somebody in the like like one of those weird 80s roadhouse movies where people just like bang
Starting point is 00:31:45 sure and then they start a big brawl okay let's go i don't know if the bar owner in this case is hockey canada and is brought before a judge he'd be like listen all bars are a little bad i mean getting bottled isn't you know what i'm saying it's just the most it you you're laughing it sounds absurd you know what you're saying but but that's how absurd this argument is right i wanted that to sound stupid because it is okay now i do understand uh uh now i'm glad that's what you were going for well i was going for stupid it was stupid what's the vr video game bar fight oh yeah it's called drunken bar fight um so so um i guess um so obviously john nader who i mentioned earlier um uh brought up the fact that hockey canada hired uh a crisis communications
Starting point is 00:32:38 firm uh and administered a quote asinine survey and rick westhead was the one that uh put that out there remember we talked about this last week about do you feel like the do you feel like the scandals have been overblown well by the media yes and these quotes that are coming out are this is this is why attacking the media is so disingenuous yesterday's proceedings happen right they are put out there by the media because that's what the media does they relay things that happen so you could make every friggin thing the media you can i wish there were fewer earthquakes and floods in the media like that that's how news is conveyed for god's sake well that's how it's conveyed so katie strang and rick westhead yes they are the media but they are accurately giving you
Starting point is 00:33:33 simply what happened which is the proceedings yesterday are all these uh mps from all these different parties now the media like we watched we watched a quebec mp just outright chastise uh andrea skinner and what is he a media member now because his words are now in the media it's it's again it's it's we'll get to that based in bad faith and we will get it for sure agreed now um john nader also went after them and said there are internal attempts to shift the narrative around settlements they are trying to change the way these settlements are viewed and it's evidenced by recent board minutes now board minutes are when you meet as a board in a public corporation or in a especially in a government corporation what people say is kept track of
Starting point is 00:34:21 it's almost like a court document you know where they got the stenographer there you know yeah that they literally do the same thing and um and and i i think that you're going to see now and you're going to see it in these comments and you're going to see it going forward. Hockey Canada is going to fight back here. Michael Brindamore reported that he called for Hockey Canada CEO Scott Smith to be terminated and the board had discussions about his leadership and decided to put its full trust in Scott Smith, pressed on whether he has personally has any faith in Smith. Brindamore did not comment.
Starting point is 00:34:58 uh andrea skinner described um the crisis navigators hire as an attempt to infuse the company with a quote new perspective on how it communicates with the public which it clearly has because remember they were apologetic in the spring and now they are uh digging their heels and in the fall defense um board and this is another one we saw live and it was just jaw dropping so andrea skinner again and ceo scott smith so board chair andrea skinner ceo scott smith on presenting gold medals to women at the world championships uh katie i i like i i don't know katie must have laughed right because we basically what they said was well scott smith was okay to give out the gold medals at the world championships to the the women's team because
Starting point is 00:35:50 he did so at the behest of a woman he was he was asked to do it by andrea skinner i don't know no that wasn't confirmed they just said a woman behest of a woman that that oh that was my impression that was my impression as well but i don't believe they ever actually said it so just it was at the behest of a woman and i don't know who they also said nobody else was around to do it so a woman told him to go do it you could have gotten which woman any other living breathing human being to hand out these gold medals and i i oh man i don't remember who said it it might have been one of you two might have been someone on twitter it wasn't uh uh just an act of defiance it was an act of like outright aggression like f you i'm here yeah and it was a middle finger
Starting point is 00:36:44 to everybody who's cared about this certainly yes it it greatly took away from the moment and that's how it ended so that's how that's how this whole tournament this culmination of years of hard work for these women on this canadian team uh that's how it ended with uh the with the actions of a man and it was the the second because we had the world juniors and then we had the women's world championship and that was the second time when the hockey candle logo was on full display for a couple weeks and then that's how they chose that it was disgusting i also say behest of a woman so does one woman give license for all women to be okay with this yeah oh well and you know because because women are just one one mind at all you know they're just a hive mind
Starting point is 00:37:28 well it's the same person really portrays scott are you kidding me it portrays scott smith as some weak-kneed quivering naive child who's like well okay since you asked me to i guess i'll do it no anyone with any thought in their head and i said this before let's say scott uh is innocent of any wrongdoing all right let's just say for the sake of argument and he knows he's innocent and he firmly believes in his own head that he's innocent i should be here leave me alone anyone with any rational thought in their head goes you know what i know i didn't do this i shouldn't be handing these out this is not the right time this is inappropriate let's punt to someone else and also like oh no one else was around to do it get someone else get anybody else
Starting point is 00:38:23 plan this minimum a week ahead of time find someone anyone some local hero some i don't know charity get a kid it's it's this isn't a difficult task you're handing up medals yeah come on and this is the guy they picked it shows a complete lack of judgment they asked they asked about the can i just follow up on that yeah it wasn't in katie's uh thread but uh paul grant did tweet that they asked house father covering this for sports that's what i'm yeah i've got it here oh you got that one okay yeah well about anthony house father talking about the the uh the second fund do you know and i'm talking about the gold medals all the gold medals so my apologies yeah so uh they asked did the women's national team request smith to give team gold medals for the
Starting point is 00:39:09 world tournament win and skinner said wasn't possible for volunteer to present the medals and then house father said wasn't possible for any of the members to present medals we'll check on that great yeah i simply don't believe they're still digging on this because it's ridiculous that it ended up in scotland so that same mp anthony house father also said uh he cited the globe and mail report about the second fund and we mentioned this last episode it dropped obviously the day before and they were talking about this this um uh this second fund that was also there basically to handle sexual assaults as well other than the first one it was called like a heritage fund or whatever um and uh basically he also mentioned the fact that there are board meeting
Starting point is 00:39:52 minutes in which hockey canada has internally expressed the need to shift the narrative and to counter reporting on the matters in the press basically they want to muddy the waters and what if skitter's response to this is fascinating because she says uh hockey canada has an excellent reputation and that the board uh does not find it appropriate to replace senior leadership based on what she describes as quote substantial misinformation and unduly cynical attacks um uh you know it's it's amazing it's amazing to me um that uh they are able to sit here and do this i i'm when you when you counter something like if you're playing defense in the press right because this is a court of public opinion matter right now and eventually something will
Starting point is 00:40:40 happen but right now it's a court of public opinion and you're getting you're getting grilled by mps you're about to move into a different court when you're when you're trying to quote unquote win a pr battle which is what they're trying to do now my question is always to what end how do you think this is going to go and what i can't figure out from hockey canada or its crisis pr firm is how they think this is going to go like their play has to be to go for a tie here which is muddy the waters to the where the point where it gets so confusing people can't pay attention anymore it seems we're there is that where we're at already 100 i don't know this hasn't been that no no where i think we're still we're still a this is a very important issue i
Starting point is 00:41:22 don't think it's muddied it is but again we're we're very big hockey fans um prime minister has asked about it today yeah he was but you know what's funny so here's exactly what i think happens right and it's actually it's kind of smart justin trudeau is enormously unpopular and hockey canada says their message trudeau comes out and scolds them and all of a sudden if you hate justin trudeau your opinion about hockey canada is what hockey canada told you no because you're off people people thousand percent people will and and it's it's in in a lot of ways he would shut the fuck up yeah in a lot of ways it'd be better if he said nothing i know he has a leader he has to yeah um but you have a certain amount of people in this country
Starting point is 00:42:14 and a large portion of people who shouldn't be catered to but they have to be uh which is like you know they're not looking at this as they're not watching the hearings and they don't know that it's a bipartisan committee and if justin trudeau says anything if he says the sky's blue they're going to disagree with him and so i i think he has to say something but the less he says the better it's going to go yeah he was asked about it directly because hockey quebec pulled out of hockey canada yeah i think when that's today and and when hockey quebec's doing that i think that's something that's on both sides you know i don't think no matter what political spectrum you're on especially because of the feelings of quebecers who vote you know
Starting point is 00:42:53 i feel like that's like oh this isn't a political issue here this is a terrible organization issue i'm i'm just saying what i think they're going for i think you're right that's what yeah that's definitely what they're going for i think you're right that it's gone too far for them to accomplish their goal but that is that's a hundred percent their goal they want as many like who wants to hear from any mp ever right so all you hear is hockey canada bad and that's what you're gonna hear in the simplest of terms in the media and then all of a sudden this dude who has maybe the most hated face in the country comes and says hockey canada bad and all of a sudden it very quickly in the minds of many people becomes hockey canada good that's and that is i do think
Starting point is 00:43:37 there is going to be a little bit of that and people love people love hockey yeah people love hockey so again the sport's not under but we are getting a lot i know sorry up here i'll wrap it up but when hockey canada says the sport is under attack people who like hockey have license to be like but i like hockey and i don't want it to be that's what they want so everyone who says this the everyone who is attacking the sport is now my enemy it's a little like when don cherry was fired and people were like and then there was a comment it became a political issue it became a is is hockey culture toxic um when really uh what it should have been is don cherry should have been off tv a long time ago and to a lot of people it's the same shit yes i under i so i get
Starting point is 00:44:27 that that's what hockey can is going for the pr i don't think they're going to win i think i'm with you i think with the things that we see them saying it's so transparent that i don't think they're they're smart enough to win this pr battle but especially because things like if hockey quebec pulls out that's just quebecers against hockey canada now that's not like oh you're defending because that's your organization now they're out i think they're gonna lose the hockey parents but you but you then but you then have people go oh that's quebec being difficult again yeah and then ontario follow suit and let's see what happens i don't think they're gonna win i don't have faith and by the way i don't believe that for anybody from quebec adam adam made a really good point
Starting point is 00:45:02 at the beginning where they were apologetic at the beginning internally i guarantee you they view that as a mistake and this is them adjusting well it's it's the um it's the never apologize fight every inch fight every inch fight every inch until the other side gets tired now this fund was discovered we're very sorry second fund was discover uh what the hell's your problem how else what they basically said and here's what here's why i want to get back to the testimony because andrea skinner said yesterday we handled everything appropriately including the 2018 sexual assault she's like there's no other way that anybody else would have handled this any differently and i think it's important that you hear me when i say that she said the view of hockey canada is
Starting point is 00:45:43 that they handled this the the best way they possibly could there was no other recourse there was no other way to handle this as a government agency right because when it's a private company you almost in a in a cynical way sort of expect them to go well they kind of want to preserve their brand so of course they want to keep that covered up it's still wrong but you see the motivation there with a government agency uh you expect transparency that's the expectation in a democracy although we rarely get it and and and so and this is where i think it gets fascinating here it says um andrea skinner says our board frankly does not share the view that senior leadership should be replaced on the basis of what we consider to be substantial
Starting point is 00:46:23 misinformation and unduly cynical attacks hockey canada has an excellent reputation it doesn't not anymore and i mean really hockey canada's reputation was only good because they won games and because uh that was all we had they were a monolithic or there was no competition we like hockey yeah we like hockey and well that's the that's the logo i don't know what did we really what do you really know about hockey canada honestly i don't know much i don't know i know i had to pay the registration fee it's the governing body it's the governing body i don't know so it has a to say it has an excellent reputation i would say it's pretty void of a reputation until until this yeah this is now their reputation yeah i don't think you you can't say we have a
Starting point is 00:47:11 good reputation if this thing you're sitting at this horrendous issue is is your reputation um do you see how many different things we've spoken about already chris yes the waters are this is like 10 minutes i know but this is a this is a uh we are talking about a back and forth parliamentary thing and and and this is the thing is what we're going to do our best to do and i know 32 thoughts is going to do this and i know all the other podcasts that cover this are going to do this and and cj show everybody is going to um try to keep us on track right and cj said it perfectly when in our in our little group chat he said deflect obfuscate uh deflect and evade and that is how they answered all these questions one of the mps said uh i don't know how
Starting point is 00:47:58 i don't know that anyone has confidence in the senior management of hockey canada this is mp chris biddle and it's surprising that the only people in the country that seem to have confidence in senior management of hockey canada are the few members of the board of directors if hockey canada is looking to preserve itself and move forward there needs to be real change and it starts at the top and there needs to be new leadership and again we mentioned this earlier right it's not that hockey canada can't change but if you've been in hockey canada while this has happened for 30 years which i believe scott smith has been there since 1995 he's been there as long as the raptors right so that's oh wow yeah this is a long time when you put that how is it how do
Starting point is 00:48:44 you expect somebody who's been indoctrinated into that culture for that long to all of a sudden go you know what i have the solutions i can look at this differently it's and it's a good thing too it's a good thing you had me here because things could have got bad like if if you would if scott skinner or scott skinner if scott smith and andrea skinner had the answers they'd have answered this i think you're right and that's that's the major issue here these people don't want to lose their jobs and what they are doing is they are going to take down hockey canada with them oh yeah so that they don't it's it's it's they are literally saying you're gonna have to fucking fire me because i ain't leaving are you at the quote about the lights oh well because that's this
Starting point is 00:49:29 heavily relates yeah so about so essentially and i'll paraphrase here um well i basically andrea skinner said if the board of directors if there was a mass exodus of the board of directors and senior leadership um what impact would that have on the kids because again the way you the way you deflect to quote uh cj because i love this word the way you obfuscate the way you evade it's a great word is you go what about the children it's a great it's such a great move traditionally in pr what about your kids well people say well i love my kids i want my kids to have the best child i want them to have better childhood than i did right we all want that for kids the actual quote is will the lights stay on in the rinks i don't know that was the quote
Starting point is 00:50:20 that uh the more i thought about it and a lot of people highlighted the quote um because of its absurdity yes it is absurd it's it's an easy one it's absurd and it's a it's a visual uh you know oh the lights turn off it it shows unrest in it oh guys we shut down hockey canada the lights are off it's yeah how do you keep them on oh you just turn them on yeah you pay the energy bill well that was that and you and you have the board of directors resign no but how would you pay a bill without someone at the top i can guarantee you not a single one of those board of directors pays an energy bill at any any rank in this country yeah so that quote went around for its absurdity and the more i thought about it uh i wasn't thinking of it for its absurdity i was
Starting point is 00:51:10 thinking of it because of how monstrous it is i didn't interpret it as absurd i interpreted it as a threat if you don't give us what we want if you keep after us if you keep trying to hold us accountable this is going to affect kids this is going to affect hockey at its root and it'll be your fault i i interpreted it as a threat and they should feel ashamed so they have two funds and you need to know the names of these if you really want to follow this closely the national equity fund and the participants trust legacy fund the national equity fund was the original fund that we discovered to to uh pay out the money to assault victims the participants legacy fund is the one that the globe and mail discovered and andrea skitter is trying to say that's not a
Starting point is 00:52:02 hockey canada asset she says the trust was established to cover uninsured claims that might arise from a period when hockey canada and its members were self-insured from september 86 to august 1995 that's why there was money put into that trust now what what possible things could arise from that grievous injury right uh sexual assault so what what what is shocking about this is that okay so you've you've you know hockey canada was uninsured from that time here's the fund for it but there's you're not saying that you wouldn't then still use that money to cover sexual assaults that date back to 1986 to 1995 yeah and it's not an asset even though so it's not an asset it's a fund fair enough but you can still use it to cover your ass is the
Starting point is 00:52:55 point and you didn't disclose this they could have said this in the spring and i i just they didn't mention a second so why can't there be a third right and and again they go back to the board minutes and this is the thing i really want you to look out for um the board minutes the board the board of directors is going to go right after the media on this one you know the the ricks and the katies of the world the idea is to muddy the waters as much as possible try to uh you try to basically um not necessarily refute the claims but make the side that's reporting the claims look like they're bad or immoral people it can get personal and i'm not saying that's necessarily what they're going to do but that's been the tactic in the past um oh if i can't if i can't
Starting point is 00:53:44 beat steve or jesse in an argument i'll just say steve's a bad guy and provide reasons why steve's a bad guy which will deflect from the fact why that i'm a bad guy right that's the whole thing now i have a couple questions for you guys first off you should know that skinner and are not the only hockey canada members to face the committee bob nicholson will testify in another round of hearings the date is yet to be determined i'm curious about that one we're not talking about that enough no and i'm i'm not nearly i have to say guys i know he's the i know he's the head of an nhl franchise but there has been suspiciously little written about this yeah i do find that weird the president of uh the edmonton oilers who went to the western conference final last year
Starting point is 00:54:29 uh he's the president of the hockey team with uh the best hockey player in the world um come the fuck on i'm sorry we're not doing well enough the other thing i'd like to say and that's media we we i i'm collectively um we're not doing well i i am curious as to why andre skitter didn't have to be there in person and i i i tweeted that yesterday i think you i think it's very clear the reason and and i don't know if you saw the the proceedings and stuff and the articles don't really mention it but it's it seemed pretty clear and mps did ask her if she was being fed answers from behind her computer because she's literally on a laptop like this and she kept putting the thing on mute and then she'd be like oh i'm sorry i didn't have it
Starting point is 00:55:17 i didn't take my mute off and they're like why are you taking your mute off in the first place are you being fed answers i believe she did disclose i want to say she and uh scott smith scott smith i almost called him scott skinner um i believe they were both on video call and both had counsel in the room with them but they disclosed that they had counsel well yeah and you're i guess you're allowed to counsel i guess if you're in person you could have counsel in the room too but you wouldn't be talking directly to your counsel while you're trying to answer a question not while you're answering the question yeah you have to prepare yourself either well yeah you can't mute yourself to ask them a question you have to do this when you're talking
Starting point is 00:55:53 yeah so here's the thing if the council is going to be in the room the council should be on camera yeah uh that i don't i don't know how that i don't know how they got away with that like it's still and it's such utter bullshit and don't tell me it's not it's it isn't different it's a tactic if you're not there how does the how does parliament not compel them to be there in person i don't care if you've got covid put a mask on get there did anybody tweet you an answer nobody knows no nobody's i i don't i mean listen with all the questions being asked that's sort of a lesser question but i i i i hope and i hope you write your local mp and compel them to be there in person because i'll tell you this it's a lot easier and you
Starting point is 00:56:36 know this from being on twitter to be shitty on the internet it's a lot easier to be intractable on the internet it's a lot easier to evade questions on the internet if you're there and you're surrounded and they're in a circle in front of you all right pretty damn hard to get away with lies on the same level these guys were almost not almost they were cocky about this they were arrogant about this don't let them get away with this and i hope bob nicholson's there in person you better be oh you better be like we've all sat on zoom calls for work and like it being on a zoom call with everybody in the office sitting there on the other end of the the webcam isn't the same as being there in person like it's completely different between looking at your
Starting point is 00:57:23 laptop and looking somebody in the eye when they're sitting there think about our show when we were online even though uh thank god everybody still stuck with us it was great the second we all go back together last last fall it was amazing well i'm i'm gonna i'm gonna let you guys in a little secret there were times where i was on twitter on the phone no we couldn't tell when you would just not know what's happening where are we with this but like even little things like her body language and and how she's feeling we couldn't get any of that when they have to cut back and forth through her webcam that's really shitty and she was right did you notice she was right here oh yeah it was her chin up i didn't read that far you can't yeah
Starting point is 00:58:04 absolutely can't see your hands you can't see her you can't really see her shifting it's it's bullshit and it's a joke and and i i i really really hope and we should be demanding that these people are there in person there was uh also you don't have airpods you have these gigantic headphones with a microphone attached to it so you can hide some of your face all of it are your ears red i'm looking at everything yeah i was about oh i'm i'm not reading that far into it i'm looking i don't know if she has an ear tinfoil hat on that one like ron weasley but yeah that's uh it's all of it stank all of it stank and honestly like here you want a little bit of advice hockey canada start start start talking about how awesome rick westhead and
Starting point is 00:58:48 katie strang are the more you attack the media the more i just assume how right they are like these are capital j journalists yeah and uh you're gonna lose this one yeah nicholson by the way 1998 to 2014 he was president and ceo of hockey canada so that was his reign that is a long long time yeah the company grew from 23 employees to 120 from uh his starting to his leaving he has to be there he built that place i mean kind of yeah yeah what's 20 120 divided by 23 like a lot four times yeah five times the amount of employees they said there'd be no math he built it it's like asking a couple questions come on guys yeah it it 100 should be a bigger story and i know people listen to the show and if you're wondering if that's me yes it is it's okay best
Starting point is 00:59:44 time to plant a tree it was 20 years ago the second best time is now let's start talking about the fact that the fucking president of the canadian hockey team is going to be sitting in front of a government committee yes getting grilled for the bad job he did and when you lay it out as the president of the best hockey player on earth in a canadian market you wonder why people don't want to talk about it you know they might be afraid to to shake the trees i don't know what it is but i'm hoping we see something good time to start absolutely okay so i think what we'll do is do we want to do a press conference today yeah let me ask a couple all right cool let's do a press
