with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake hey hey it is uh the real start of the season sorry it is uh it's the real start the leafs are playing tonight so this is where it begins hey hey you mean the robin to logan cooley's batman that's that's what i call connor bernard listen it was nice to see the second best prospect in the world play last night so good he might be the second best prospect on the blackhawk that's it's a good point it's a good point lucas reichel kevin kuczynski he might be third it might be it might be did you guys see that cole gutman scored oh hell yeah do you remember in the previews when i ended the segment i was like they have so many creative players like a guy named cole gutman yeah

and then he scores on opening day he i i do remember him playing last year but man they had a lot of creative players and they get the win they want yeah well so this you remember cole gutman playing last year i do he played 14 nhl games in his entire career yeah but i just yeah look at his numbers he remembers all four of his goals in those 14 games come on for you don't remember cole gutman playing a hockey game is it four or one i don't have my glasses on four good you don't remember cole gutman playing a hockey i don't remember what it looked like he watched the cole gutman super cut this season uh this offseason this summer instead of game of thrones he was like i want to i need to watch cole gutman highlights it was

it was 20 seconds yeah that's that's 82 goal pays cole gutman to you yeah it's true uh conor bernard's first game i'll say this matthew scored four just throwing that out there i know so he's a quarter is good yeah no he didn't even score though yeah i lost i lost five dollars you got a point i lost five dollars yeah i made that bet on the show yesterday you stink to be fair it did look like he was going to especially on that second shot in the first period where he got in real close i'm like that's going in didn't go in but you can definitely tell much improved vibes much improved vibes in the blackhawks i want to see how many shots he has because it felt like he had a million he had i think it was a 10 or 11 attempts i want to say heading into the third

on goal he had five five shot i mean that's that's a very good opening performance oh yeah yeah yeah very good opening performance i think the more important story here is that kyle dubas lost to peter morazic and nick felino last night shout out to jd bunkus for that one that's a funny isn't that hilarious well you know i think um i think he got an assist on the winner yeah so obviously the penguins were up to nothing uh by most defensive metrics and fancy stats and jesse i just sent you one here if you want to blow it up on the screen eric carlson was the worst defensive presence on the ice of either team last night after they went up to nothing they kind of fell asleep now i know it's the first game but welcome to overreaction season kids i

mean they're not good they're gonna have a lot of games like that man they're gonna have a lot of games like that they're gonna score goals i don't think they'll have a problem doing that but defending leads is gonna be a problem that is very much like kyle dubas that's a kyle dubas team right there score goals can't can't defend lead while going backward he got better he did get better it's true um uh so uh connor uh bedard there's a lot of connors yeah one game connor bedard did not wear a bucket and warm up did not wear a helmet well that's a fine that's a fine now fine if pride tape's a fine you bet your ass that's a fine i think it was funny because um conor bedard's picture in warm-up without a helmet on was posted on the nhl

instagram account amazing yeah because they want you to see this kid's face yes it's they want to market him it's one of the things that you know the nhl has as a challenge that not every league does soccer doesn't have this problem basketball doesn't have this problem uh it's more difficult to see the facial features of their players and the hair and the personality and the expression and all of that. But no, why would you want Conor Bedard to have a helmet on him?

Well, and I'm looking at this and I'm like, by the way, shout out to Fris Bob, one of our listeners who was posting this. Part of me wondered if this was on purpose. A hundred percent. Like on purpose in what way? That he didn't wear a helmet. Like, cause even though like, you know,

the nhl is like yeah we have rules but we they they blow through their own rules all the time no i assume he'll get a fine like i he did it he did it on purpose like he went out i would like to see the receipt where he wires the nhl the money because they could issue a statement saying he got a fine and they go don't worry about paying that wow they could do that yeah yeah i i assume he'll get a fine and the nhl and the nfl have have the same problem in that they're they fine guys for things that they celebrate so the nfl uh players are constantly getting fined for touchdown celebrations and then you see the same touchdown celebrations in nfl commercials and they'll use them in highlights all the time on the nfl uh twitter feed on their instagram like tyreek hill

he's been fined i think it's a hundred thousand dollars like so far this season for all of his touchdowns yeah because every time he does something extravagant he scores a lot of touchdowns and he keeps getting fined but then all the time when they're promoting the league they use these highlights and the nhl kind of has the same problem and i wonder about these leagues and it's like you want guys to show expression and celebrate themselves and then you use those in promos literally on your instagram page but then you also find them for it i mean we're not we're looking for uniformity here remember it's not about conor bedard it's about the chicago blackhawk on his chest you ever get so exhausted yeah the nba fixed this problem

with the with the dress code what they do uh they they said you can wear whatever you want walking into the arena and it's awesome and they celebrate that now in every team they does they do their fit walk-in posts and they say hey it's not a fine if you don't wear a suit to the stadium and they celebrate hey this guy look at this guy wearing balenciaga or whatever you know so i feel like we can all just move on with these stupid silly rules like fining guys for not wearing helmet before everyone gets all mad i mean there is a reason why they have this rule do you remember taylor hall safety taylor hall fell down on the ice and his teammates stepped on his head with a skate and he got slashed open halloween style but game one i think you make an exception

and that was the first time that had happened in 50 years like it's the only time i can remember you couldn't couldn't you just call it a freak accident yep i think maybe no you don't make a rule based on one freak accident in 150 years of hockey wanna bet wanna bet matt duchesne going 10 feet offside would like to have a word with you i think that's a little different yeah it is a little different in the game that's play all this is these are things that are extracurricular is what we're talking about yeah we're talking about not even practice how about they wear a helmet all the time dressing room walking into the man you could you enter the premises you have to wear helmet and soon it'll apply to the fans as well you could trip on a sidewalk helmets clanging

together you could trip on a sidewalk hit your head yeah i've done it i've done it too on purpose i was trying to get insurance money my kid did it yesterday they sent her sent her home with a note saying she had to have ice on her head on her noggin oh no yeah were you so panicked i was like thanks kids fall oh anyway see that's that's a non-parent yeah i would i would i would i would be worried sick not you yeah but you never you wouldn't you're worried sick the first few times yeah and then you're like i can't live my life like this and you just watch you just bounce back i know tina glenn you're not oh she never outgrew that what are you talking about you can't live your life that way what about tina no she never outgrew that not one bit so there are

exceptions to the rule yes you're absolutely jesse is the least of the warriors on this panel though and i look and let's be honest uh you don't like nothing bothers you you are unshakable it's crazy i look at everly and she is a little tiny pea human and i don't want her to be injured ever so i get concerned when you say hey she hit her head and she needs ice every every day she hits her head every day every single day every day what is this this is welcome to having a child this is having a child how old's everly five four four and leo's three and they both go brain first you're trying to get the cte out of there early you know it's hey listen sounds like it's coming anyway no just get used to that blood curdling noise and you go okay and you wait for the cry

and you'd be surprised how often the cry does not happen and they just go right about watching blippy yeah everly uh if the wind she's at a stage right now where if the wind blows the wrong direction she's in tears so i think you know you also have to take it all with a grain of salt like it's it's it's she loves my kids my kid loves to perform uh and that includes dramatic recreations of what just happened when she slipped and fell and uh the funny thing is is that when i calm her down and we take deep yoga breaths right uh uh she goes okay i'm good now gone you know what i had to stop uh i had to stop being like oh my back's sore oh because they'll say it because he started walking around the house grabbing his back going oh my back's yeah he was like two he's like oh

i'm a bot daddy is your back sore back yeah with his half scottish accent and uh no he uh he doesn't do it anymore oh straight gas straight gas straight oh yeah did we talk about yeah you did i think that you taught your kid to pitch and he just says straight gas every time and now he we bought this like 20 pack of halloween eyeballs from the dollar store because he really wanted them and he takes all 20 of them and one after the other goes straight gas straight gas adam everly's in real school now she's in real school do you have a do you have a fun story from her first month of real school um well we did curriculum night the other night which i was convinced i i feel like parents and teachers don't want to be there for that because it's just like

what is it like what are we doing and the teachers were really really nice but you could tell it's like it's a thursday night i prefer not to be here talking to parents but i uh i kind of asked her uh we got two teachers in kindergarten uh i asked them like you know how's she doing or whatever and they're like oh no she's good she's got like friends i guess she has like a girl group that she's in already which is cool like whatever and actually when i picked her up from school the other day one of the girls charged her like it was like slow-mo and like clothesline grabbed her bump on the ground and both of them were laughing and and so i just so i know how tough my kid can be uh but they they were like um the one thing they were like uh she uh she's having some trouble

i'm like oh god here it comes this is where this is where oh deep therapy we're gonna we're gonna need everything i've done something wrong i've my child can you guess what the problem was no remorse she saw your devil's picture he did not see my devil in the pajamas no that's that's 18 plus i'll show that to her when she's able to drink beer i'm gonna say she's too polite too polite no uh it's that she's having a lot of trouble getting her lunch bag out of her backpack that can be tricky and that she goes like this she does this so like pretend this is the backpack and she's trying to pull the lunch bag out of it she goes and then the teacher's like i know she's not used to not having to wait her turn for things to get done but like i have you know 20 other kids

i gotta deal with uh everybody listening describe what you just well so what she'll do is she'll like you've seen a kid do this where they grab something and they're just like i'm not gonna try and then uh you know what i mean they make that noise and you're like okay i have and i i wish it was that noise as a father a lot louder usually as a father i have zero tolerance for any sort of pouting pouting is not my thing uh how do you live your life then no because what a kid that What I explained to her is that, listen, we don't pout for things. We ask for things. Okay, hold on.

Stop. Ask me. What do you want? I would like applesauce. Okay. And I say, what do you say? And she goes, please. I'm like, boom, done.

Here you go. So I'm trying to reward that. But at school, see, the thing is that they're different around you than they are around other people, right? It's like your dogs. Your dogs are different around. They're like, this guy's not my owner. I'm going to push the shit out of this person. and I'm going to fucking bully them.

That's what my dogs do. Iggy does this thing where he runs up to people like he's never been pet by another human, and then he hugs them, like he puts his butt next to them for scratches, and then he looks at me like, this is what affection looks like. This is what love looks like.

Are you married to S. Aller? You're married to Iggy. See? This is what a real man looks like, Steven. He pets me. I love it. Why don't you? What's your problem?

It's good. He's been petting me for 20 minutes. Yes, out of obligation, Iggy. He doesn't know how to get out of it. Doesn't matter. That's right. I win. Back to Conor Bedard for a second here.

You know, because that game did happen, gentlemen. Everly go no Bucky in warm-up on day one. I thought you'd find it interesting that Conor Bedard will play in these cities before going home to play in Chicago. Pittsburgh last night. Boston, I believe, tonight. montreal saturday toronto monday colorado next thursday he will not play at home until saturday october 21st you know i saw a lot of people upset about that am i weird saying i think that

that's actually a good idea why do you think that's a good idea well connor bedard games are going to be one of the hottest tickets in the nhl this season speaking of hot hotter than adam right now adam's taking off his jersey right now because he's too hot we've made it as cold as possible in the studio and adam is is just boiling the ac on and i'm just sweating buckets it's also like nine degrees outside i know i know it's bad it's bad maybe it's this coffee i don't know anyway you were saying um what was that oh yeah uh bedard is like the hottest ticket in the nhl basically like who do you want to see you want to see mcdavid you want to see uh adam you know break his arm on the microphone you want to see Crosby probably still Ovechkin um you know

maybe you can fit Matthews into that conversation um it's it's not a huge list of players on purpose because they've they don't market their stars well yeah so what are the markets that he's going to he's already been to Pittsburgh Austin Montreal Toronto Colorado it's pretty cool those are some of the biggest markets man it's the Conor Bedard tour like he's going on tour he's going all these cities everybody gets to see him in his first time in the nhl i'd have no problem with this and and all the while uh like i know blackhawks fans have to wait but all the while the anticipation for that first home game goes up and up and up and up and so do the prices and so do the hot dogs and if anything this is smart because you're making that first home game a bigger deal like it's

bigger when you build anticipation when you're waiting for something to come it feels more spectacular and now that blackhawk fans have to wait and they're sitting there and they're watching their their favorite team on tv and their new favorite player play hockey and they're like i can't wait till october 21st it's excitement like you you got bedard versus crosby opening night like that's on purpose you have bedard versus the president's trophy winning boston bruins her original six team that's on purpose the leafs biggest team in canada that's on purpose the montreal canadians winning his team in in nhl history nhl history that's on purpose in colorado as well yeah champion a year and a half ago exactly yeah and like still one of the yeah

one of the biggest stars in the league with mckinnon and they're one of the more popular teams in the league you know i did want to say going through places like and in toronto i'm going to leave off the list because we are a bit quiet when it's not the playoffs in terms of fan support like you know it can be a bit corporate in there but november stuff season seats yeah well that's a you problem that's that's a me problem i i certainly won't be cheering when i'm there this saturday you're wearing your suit sushi boston boston going through boston bedard's gonna get he's gonna hear them oh yeah uh going through montreal he's gonna hear them going through colorado he's gonna hear them and i think this sets him up perfectly for a nice

little home debut because you've got you've gone through five different rinks that are really tough to play in and and no offense to pittsburgh but i think of those five the three toughest are boston montreal colorado right in terms of fans um they're yeah yeah i mean they're known as they're montreal fans are known for being loud boss events are known for being loud uh colorado you play blink 182 they're the loudest in the in the entire nhl say say what you want about the leafs record at home in recent years like you still don't associate toronto with hard to play in 100 yeah maybe the players will help with that this year but my point is um the pressure that he felt last night the pressure that he'll feel tonight on a back-to-back in boston the pressure of his first

hockey night in canada which he grew up watching uh the pressure of his first time you know playing the toronto maple leafs in toronto whatever pressure he might feel and then you know and then a really good team in colorado too um all that will help make the home debut just a little bit easier he'll feel i think at home he'll feel comfortable exactly and i and it'll be a relief and i wonder if he'll he'll go off that night just because of it i think he'll be shot out of the cannon and also i think winning the first game of the season even though it's one game can set the tone for a season uh the vegas golden knights got kicked up and down the ice in their first ever game uh i want to say it was against the dallas stars they won

james neal got both goals marconi flurry stood in his head they won and they rode that shit and we were all like isn't that cute that they won their first game and then i think they won their second game and then it just kind of kept going and then it's remember it was like christmas and we're like are they like good i remember them kicking the leafs ass on new year's eve oh they killed them five nothing or something and they didn't and they had they used five goalies yeah during the their uh first three months yeah uh in the nhl so you know i i still don't expect big things for the chicago blackhawks this year but you know the vibes are a little different like who knows you never know what they could ride for the rest of the year and the west is a little

bit open at the bottom end sure now with peter morazic and net letting in peter morazic goals that you saw last night there's a bad goal especially the first one was that the one where he was way out where crosby i forget if it was first or the second one but you know the one yeah yeah we're talking about the same one morazic and take it away morazic's on one side the puck is on the other uh and i lean i don't mean the other side of the net i mean the other side of the rink and somehow he's still out of position no idea where his posts are yeah ever i mean he did win last night but if they are going to do anything he can't be the guy no he wins he wins on athleticism and i think what's killed him in recent years is he couldn't be athletic because

he was hurt that's what happens to your body when you get older it can be a little tighter but you know if if he has a little bit of health i could see him stopping some pucks but he's still gonna have no idea where the posts are right it was one of the most infuriating things to watch he had no idea and he had good years in detroit it's not we're not trying to take that away and carolina oh yeah yeah he had the problem is like he's had good months like he's he's gotta stay in the jonathan quick effect where it's like you have a couple great months and usually they're in the playoffs well and like jonathan quick though would would play though because he wouldn't be out of the lineup like morazic's gotta gotta stay in the lineup i bet i bet rangers fans

were wishing he had morazic's injury luck at this point he's been bad have you seen any jonathan quick highlights from the no i heard he's been like unusable in the preseason rangers are rangers fans are concerned they'll be able to find one there's there's goalies available throughout the league the red wings are carrying three it's the preseason like let's not yeah let's not get worked up about preseason save percentage i have a screenshot up there maddie of oh my god and peter marazic going head to head this is what is going out of the goal crease on the uh left side of the ice sydney crosby is on the complete other circle dot and has a wide open chip at the cage lose their mind yeah it's like that's actually like an underratedly difficult shot because

there's traffic in front he put it through the defenseman and the uh covering players uh Legs? Legs. Of course he did. Yeah, because he can just slide it along the ice. He doesn't have to aim it particularly well because the goalie's in Narnia! Get a map!

Look at that. No one... Look at him. He's got his stick out, though. At least he's got that part of the neck covered. He's trying his best. He's shocking. He knows where the puck is,

and yet he's all the way over there. Look at where... See, he's looking right at Crosby. And he was like their best player. Morazic? Morazic was not their best player. He made a lot of really good saves. He did.

And then allowed that. In the back half of the game, he was a lot better. Yes. This second goal was ugly. But yeah, after this goal, he didn't allow anything. Goalie coaches must absolutely tear their hair out. Gustafsson was a little like this. Jonas Gustafsson.

Like, super athletic guy. Couldn't. Couldn't locate pucks. uh i think uh is it jimmy weight that's there yeah jimmy weight's been he's a former nhl goaltender i think he was in the leaf system for a bit uh it sounds familiar yeah he is the blackhawks goaltending um coach coach i mean i wonder how many he's had over his career because he's been with so many different teams yeah so many different eras like i think honestly he could be vesna caliber if you gave him a bungee cord this you gotta give him a bungee cord at this

point in the in the play in the zone the puck is uh over there by seth jones yeah over here and this is where marazic is which how does he end up over here even further when the puck is going this way because of the push-off if you and if you look at him guys look at him he's still out of position there he's too far he's too far towards the backboard stop working on your slides you're too strong look at you're too strong peter peter if you're listening to this you gotta watch this part this is go check out the youtube video of these screenshots his leg is positioned perfectly if he was at the other post and he's no fucking he's on the opposite he's got great positioning except for he's on the

wrong goddamn post it was a mystifying goalie he's so confusing and he only allowed two goals he only allowed two goals he did great comeback he's barely in the blue paint like it goes in also peter p also peter if you are going to be that far out of position don't put your stick up in the middle of the net put it down at least block the ball oh he's gonna block the same part that his defenseman is already blocking he's got it like he has a condition where gravity works horizontally for him you know you know how the how the earth keeps us down and we can't jump that high like it is he's just getting constantly pulled whoa whoa from side to side good luck uh jimmy

weight on ironing that out man holy i mean and like it's it's comical because it's the black hawks and there's no expectations of this team this year really so you know you could but if that's a playoff bound team like when he was playing for the leafs that was extremely frustrating oh my god well and yeah like i said really athletically no idea where his posts are get him a bungee cord now something happens this month guys that you guys uh filmed back in august but this is a very very cool event and and and obviously uh we've even seen in the comment section it's like how many episodes can we go without mentioning john boy to start the year but steve and jesse went to the john by john boy floor hockey tournament and floor ball floor ball

excuse me difference warehouse game before we talk to chris rose i just want to ask you guys uh what's the schedule for release like what are we looking at here how can we watch and what And what SDPN content will there be available to? Because there's going to be things that you guys are filming right now. Yeah. So the Warehouse Games YouTube channel for John Boy is going to have games up and post game videos almost every day, basically for the next like four weeks or so. Starting Thursday.

Yes. My first game, I'm on Team McFlurry Power. I'm going to be playing against, we're going to be playing against Team We Got Ice. that Sunday, this Sunday, October 15th, Jesse's team, the love-yas with Nicky Cass, are going to be playing against the Woogas Tuesday, October 17th. And then after that, I can't tell you

because we signed an NBA. And if you want to follow along with the whole tournament, like I said, it begins Thursday on the John Boy Warehouse Games YouTube channel. Yes. Oh, and in terms of content for us, I am going to be doing LFR videos for McFlurry Power. ah isn't that crazy and awesome jesse blake uh and i are going to be tag teaming the love yous

uh video so after each game is streamed sometime in the next hour or two let it breathe uh there will be a video i believe on my youtube this is your perfect opportunity to do hat picks and dang it's don't tell me you're not doing them oh we absolutely could we have access to all the footage I'm telling you. We're able to use it. Come on. It would be fun. Yeah, well, the problem is, you know,

on John Boy Media. Welcoming on Chris Rose. And let me just say this. Chris and I didn't get the chance to meet, but Jesse and Steve did. I have seen a little bit of the footage of the way that you call these floorball games, Chris? And I have to say, it's immaculate.

Why don't you do more hockey? You know what? It's a great question. So I went to a place called Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for college. And I actually started us calling all of the college sports. So before I got there, no kids were calling football or men's and women's basketball or any other sport on radio.

and that's when our hockey program started to get pretty good like i don't know if you guys follow college hockey at all but we basically had the thing wrapped up a few years ago and we gave up like two goals in the last minute and ended up losing it was a soul-crushing defeat for those of us that never really won anything in college because miami university is not a wonderful uh athletic school but i do remember people wanting to get involved and call hockey and it seemed so challenging between the speed of the game and the hockey names i was like oh yeah i don't think i can do this i don't think i can do this but the guy who did has now called st louis blues games for the last two decades a guy named chris kerber wow and um yeah so he was calling all

the games and i wish i i wish had taken on the challenge because i know i would have sucked if i'd done it steve and i were watching back all of our games and we were doing some extra video reaction videos for it and we were just sitting there and we're like how are chris and pavel so good like how do they have such great rapport when they've really never hung out or done anything together it was fantastic i appreciate that and i'm gonna give him all the credit because i don't think he's done that at all at the very least i've been broadcasting games for you know 15 20 years uh on and off whether it's football or baseball or in john boy media the last couple of years with these weird sports that we come up with and uh he he was amazing i mean his ability

to just get in and out and be funny and on point and deliver information and then go play floorball occasionally it was was remarkable i i want to get into the warehouse games and the nitty-gritty but one more question before that at what age did you discover oh my voice is awesome steve it's actually a rental so uh we got to wrap this thing in about 17 minutes or it's going to go back to what it normally sounds like so i think that's pretty much the key the key it's funny because when you're not that i get recognized very much in public but more people come up to me and say i thought that sounded like you then i thought that was you which i always find interesting because the big booming bellowing voice that usually embarrasses

my wife of 26 years and our two boys yeah you only get recognized when you're like ordering starbucks and you start talking and everyone's like who's that guy who just ordered ordered a venti coffee i was about to say like you couldn't like low-key be like yeah give me a frappuccino So I would just, even if I had no idea who you were, I'd be like, oh, he's on the radio. Like, it'd be the easiest thing. Guys, can you at least get my order right? It's a half-calf, decaf mocha latte with a twist.

Oh, wow. True Californian. You've left your Ohio roots behind, sir. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I ditched those a while ago. Believe me. For anybody that doesn't know, guys, because this is really, like, this is going to be very exciting,

but I think it's hard until people have seen it to conceive of what this is. Chris, if you were going to explain this to your wife or you're going to explain this to a friend that doesn't know who John Boy is or what would you say to them to explain what you did along with Steve and Jesse and all the other guys and gals that were there and in a part of this tournament? All right, well, first of all, let's start with the facts, which is I would not explain this to my wife because she could give a rat's ass

about what it is I do when I'm away. She's just happy I'm out of the house. intelligent creations that John Boy and Jake have done was purchase this warehouse in a place called Jersey City, New Jersey. And they have turned it into our content home. So we started out by playing these blitz ball tournaments, which are essentially like a different form of wiffle ball. And Jimmy just likes playing games that he played with his family while he was growing up and Jimmy was a high school hockey player and he was like why can't we play floor ball remember he's like well I guess we can play floor ball so I don't know what you guys um Jesse and Steve when you walked in and saw the floor ball set up the first time what did you guys think of it um the court was or quarter surface or like I don't even know what you would call it floor

yeah floor yeah it was it was smaller uh than i thought and um like i'm not i'm not a great hockey player but like i i can shoot i like i i you know will shoot pucks in in the driveway and stuff but what i discovered with the the floor ball stick is i couldn't hit the broad side of a barn but because the the the the lay of the stick and the the curvature is completely different and there were a lot of rules too yeah with the with the walking in there itself and the warehouse and the facility that's what it was a shock for me i didn't realize all of the production that went behind it because there's replays there's obviously the broadcast booth there's like dozens of cameras it's it's as good of a quality as any professional broadcast and you get in there and

it's three floors i believe or is just the second floor up there but no there's three there's three oh there's yeah it's two and a half i'd go yeah over under a two and a quarter it's a giant warehouse where they have all of this content all this stuff and it was just so impressive to see and you go up a staircase like i've been in the hockey night in canada studios like your setup is comparable yeah it's it's that's cool crazy it's really good yeah it's really good it and it i can tell you this man it is so much fun for us to do it like because we a we don't take ourselves seriously at all i mean at the end of the day it's just a bunch of friends that are playing floorball together but it gets competitive you can tell man right i mean you

you could probably feel your blood going a little bit when you're playing a tight game you're like shit we really want to win this thing yes because of our nda we will have no comment on that it got it got very vicious at times there's a couple of tight games where things got a little chippy it was it was a lot of fun and i didn't expect that level of competition to be honest i didn't i didn't expect myself to go all out just give it my all just like i'm playing a professional you mentioned uh pavel would sometimes play we haven't really explained the pavel play which is once per game uh each team would get 30 seconds where pavel would leave pavel barber okay uh hockey influencer he's on the canadian floorball team he would uh leave the

broadcast booth to play when when you first heard of that job um did you think it could be done did you think they could adequately uh leave the booth play and return and not just be completely breathing out their ass the whole rest of the time they're on the mic so there were a few things that went into when i first heard when jimmy explained to me that part of the rule and my my brain immediately kind of went to the content creation side okay how can we make this so that it is the best possible experience for our viewers can we mike pavel up can he also have an earpiece in so that i could be talking to him while he's on the floor and so we went through different machinations of how this would go down and then once reality met our imaginary world it was even better than

i anticipated it was better than i thought it would be that's and that's saying something because i had really high expectations for it um one aspect of this that that maybe your your followers don't know is that when we do our warehouse games events and it's going to be on our warehouse games channel so you can easily find it on youtube i know you guys have been great about spreading the word and we are so appreciative of that is that when this starts on thursday click the link and you will be part of our john boy media community which is unlike anything i've experienced and i've been in a linear television world for three decades i joined john boy two and a half years ago and i have loved every second of it because it is it has allowed us

You look at the lineup and you're like, yeah, it's good enough, right? Vlad and Bo Bichette are your stars. Alejandro Kirk really came into his own the previous season, but didn't live up to it. Your outfield, Springer has always been a clutch guy. Kiermaier is more of a defender.

We thought Dalton Varsha was going to be better, and obviously that trade with arizona doesn't look great so far right now matt chapman has been a solid third baseman got up to a smoke and start the first month so you felt like the the pieces were there so what is wrong with this team and you immediately go to is there is it not that there's bad guys i'm not saying that but sometimes chemistry you put dudes together it's not the right mix so i am i am going to be really curious to see if in this offseason they pull the trigger on a major major deal like would they be willing Vlad's there to stay you can't give it but you could get an awful lot for Boba no you dare no you dare Chris Rose no hold on hold on one second

here and I know that he was one of the few guys that actually yeah hit a little bit against the twins but you have to give up something good if you're going to revamp a team and I'm not so sure that that's the play but man I think they're going to be kicking the tires on almost anything this offseason oh I like it well but okay but guys what's the alternative to just run the same team back and be like okay third place is good enough in this division you must not pay attention to the Toronto Maple Leafs yeah regular season success followed by playoff failure you know what let's try it again let's finish third in the division and let's and let's get eliminated and try it again that's what they've done the goal is to find defined I was a huge Cujo fan back

Yeah, this is... How did you get involved with basically the coolest thing ever, which, as Steve said, is robots fighting? Yeah, for people that aren't familiar with BattleBots, it's two 250-pound robots having a three minute fight inside of a bulletproof glass cube. And so you're either fighting to the death or it goes the distance. And we do have judges that will award points and you win either, you know,

by unanimous decision or split decision. I didn't know a damn thing about it. Now, it used to be broadcast on Comedy Central back at the turn of the century. So like late 90s through the early 2000s. Then as far as television went, it went on the shelf. it wasn't being broadcast they were still having battle bots fights but they weren't nobody could really see them it was kind of like fight club it's like underground stuff and then in 2015 they decided to bring it back onto abc as a summer replacement a short series and my agent was like

what do you know about battle bots and i was like the battleship like the game you play that little one where you sunk my battleship now she's like battle bots you moron is that i didn't know anything about it so she said well they want to talk to you about being the play-by-play guy for it i said okay so i spin up some clips on youtube our oldest son who i believe was just finishing his freshman year in high school walks down and he looks at him said what are you doing i said well i'm auditioning for this show he sits down and 90 seconds later he goes you are not taking that job i said well first of all i don't even have the job i said what secondly what's the big it looks kind of cool he's a dad if you take that i'm gonna get laughed out of school i said all

right well no big deal i end up getting the job it's a summer replacement it does pretty well he and his friends watch it and all of his buddies love it and i walk into his room one day and i said you're welcome for not being a goddamn loser anymore it's nice that your friends finally like you you're welcome so ended up doing it we have done it seven seasons we spent two on abc in the last five on discovery and i'm not lying to you when i say that we shoot it the entire season over two weeks it is a grind it's not easy and it is the most fun i have all year it's it's like um summer camp depending on when we shoot it we've shot it every month from april through october but people come from around the world it's an amazing community of people it's like a 600

person production when you factor in all the tv people and all the competitors because the teams aren't just one or two people like some of them run 10 deep with a pit crew it's ridiculous and it is just an amazing community a ton of fun we've got it down to a science and who doesn't want to see shit blow up and people are okay like that's fun stuff i want to see shit blow up oh That is why I turned in. And now, I mean, thank goodness they get to keep Martin Jones, which is not something I ever thought I was going to say, because all the other options in the organization haven't played a game in the NHL. Right.

They were a groin tweak away from that being a reality. And Joseph Wall being the starter. That would be a problem. I don't think I would mind Joseph Wall as the starting goaltender. And I think by the game 82, we might get to a situation where Joseph Wall plays his way into that. Yes, but do we want him to be the 60-game starter? Mm-hmm. Yeah?

We'll figure it out. I think there's a lot of conversation here that needs to be had about Sammy versus Wall. And we have 82 games to figure it out. And I think that's a very fun thing for the Leafs. I agree. But? all of this is yeah besides them losing a third goalie and that injury happening that you're so worried about these injuries yeah i've noticed that with they use four guys last entire preseason

with a lot of these teams you're like but what if somebody gets injured which is ubiquitous really yeah i was raised by an italian woman i think about the worst case scenario and uh like yeah they had four goalies that they used they used 12 13 defensemen shit happens man you gotta prepare for it uh i want to say that that going into tonight's game this is the most normal things have felt since i think 2019 and even them things were that normal because i think willie held out that year um that was 18 was it yeah yeah no 2019 was mitch marner no it was the babcock's going to be fired here yeah but mitch marner held up oh yeah but mitch marner he was there for game one he was he was um and i and the reason i i say that is you know i think on balance like if you

actually take a look back and it's difficult to to fathom this i think now but everybody's been through a lot in the last four or five years and like yeah the first time the nhl has started on time in four seasons yes this is the first time that it will end on time hopefully it's not in four seasons there are they're still late with the draft the draft this year is june 28th which is even later than it was this past season is that i think we had the draft on the 26th or 27th is that a covid thing or a choice i think that's a choice because pierre lebrun uh was tweeting about it and he made it sound like a choice like he and i he's not alone wants the nhl season to begin in september and wrap up may 31st that's the the one thing the khl has that i would like

the nhl to adopt is they have a drop dead date the season will be done by april 30th come hell or high water now there are some setbacks um like if you don't make the playoffs they make you practice for like a month fucking stupid but uh it'd be great to have a drop dead date um especially as someone who works uh you know covering the sport because uh don't ask me to do anything in june i don't know sure steve are you a vip stop asking me i hate that you still ask me after all these years i don't know yeah yeah and and i think honestly i think everybody would love it a free agency happened in mid-june rather than july yep um july 1st man yeah it just sucks not just for me but everybody the players hate it the agents hate it the teams hate it everybody

hates it uh fans are like i i don't know how like i never really loved it because it's like there is a there is a bit of a an imbalance because you're exhausted from the hockey year right you've watched if you're like a lot of fans are watching 50 or 60 games and then playoffs and then maybe some other teams playoffs once your team's out and then the nhl awards and then the draft and then free agency which they love to stretch and it's like i i'm not sure what you gain out of that i think i think getting right to the draft and the awards the draft the free agency thing within a few days of the stanley cup final you know let them party for two or three days and then go okay guys it's it's draft and and free agency time let's move here's some advil

so they can find a spot for Shane Pinto. Josh Norris is not going on LTIR. If he did, his first game would be against the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 8th. But he has not played in any preseason games, and they were expecting him to play in at least five. Now, listen, I want to say something. People, Ottawa fans, are a little upset with Pierre Dorian,

and i get it i get it because they're right they're mad at the wrong at the right person mad at the right person but i want to i said a lot of words that i didn't mean to there here here's the thing ottawa fans and and everybody in general has made fun of the leafs for for a long time for how they manage their cap they're right up against it all the time it took cap gymnastics the reality of that is it takes a fair bit of education to be able to pull that off and pure durian has never had to do that he's literally a cap rookie when it comes to spending to the cap that's actually such a good point and and so he fucked up and if i'm completely honest i don't totally blame him for it because the language sucks he doesn't have a person around

him like brandon print him to say yeah you can no you can't and uh and is it is it bad sure it's bad but i have absolutely no sympathy he he's never had i didn't say i had sympathy i didn't say i just say i don't blame him necessarily as much he's never had to manage a cap at the top of the salary chain if you are cutting cap and you're spending 60 million when the rest of the nhl spent in 80 million your fucking life is easy you you could your life is easy you could literally call up the cap friendly guys like it wouldn't be hard and they might since you're the ottawa senators charge you a small uh consulting fee but uh like literally just call up the guys who run that site they'll they'll set you straight well he didn't really have budget for that until probably

recently i just want to say this if you don't operate at the cap life is easy in the nhl when you do for the first time shit like this happens but it doesn't help if you're michael and lauer and your general manager's built a good team but you're seeing this and you're going to start your first game as the owner without your second and your third line centers in the in the lineup because the cap issues this summer are you not a little bit annoyed uh you're probably a little bit annoyed but you've also been following the situation for months and you probably told him to spend you probably told him to spend um and like i mean this is actually kind of steve stayos job now is to manage that relationship you know and lauer's gonna have his opinion steve stayos

is the president his job is to run the team and be the buffer between the owner and the general manager right now here's what i hope doesn't happen because this as a as a leaf fan and this is my olive branch descends fans this was something that pissed me off because you always talk about how uh the leafs big stars were never willing to take less they were never willing to take less they always took the maximum allowable one year someone did take less they literally called the up the general manager and they said take several thousand dollars off of my contract so that we can be capped compliant i can think of two people i can think of mark giordano mark giordano was one of them i wasn't thinking about him the other guy's john tavaris was it john

tavaris john tavaris was offered 13 million a season from san jose yeah that's 11 in toronto that's different though that's that's a free agent coming in i'm talking about a guy who they had to re-sign so it's comparable to the shane pinto situation uh ilia mckay of oh ilia mckay of they were grinding to get his contract done and they were like literally several thousand dollars apart like less than a used car apart and i don't know if it was dubas who asked him or if he called dubas but he was like just take it off fine and dan millstein tweeted we are gold star we are gold star hashtag what i do like within the sens fan base and the leafs fan base at the time um no one that i've seen is legitimately asking shane pinto to

that's where i think we differ yeah because i think now we have two organizations that think hey it's not he hasn't cracked an NHL lineup to the point where we need to provide him a spot and that he's probably should be in the minors right now but I think I mean he's young enough to like him playing AHL games isn't the end what yeah what's wrong with that he's 22 he's fine but uh all I'm saying is like that's an NHL quality player he played enough games in the NHL that like we can be pretty confident in that and it took this whole rigmarole of going on waivers twice just to get him sent down to Belleville and stay in the Sens organization and like I'm sure that screwed up his his week at minimum screwed up his training camp yeah

and put you on their roster but unfortunately with the flat cap as we've seen with the senators and a lot of other teams the Leafs are some of them too most teams cannot afford 23 players on their roster not maybe not most or even 22 all right what happens when there's no jobs like the waivers create the jobs what happens if there's no other spaces right and it's it trickles down to the american league um where guys are getting booted off of american league teams because there's too many guys who should be in the nhl and those are guys just trying to get by like guys in the american league make like 70 75 grand like these are not uh millionaire athletes they're you know regular people you can call it like a decent living but like you're also never freaking home

you just your your thing about because you're really good with this when guys go up to the nhl they get paid an nhl salary even if they're not on the ice they're still getting that paycheck for those amount of days that even if you're a healthy scratch at the nhl level that's tens of thousands of dollars it's i don't remember the exact numbers but i remember paying attention to it when the leafs called up ben scrivens so deals would be something like seventy thousand dollars in the minors seven hundred thousand dollars in the nhl and it took him i want to say it was like two weeks to make half of his ahl salary just being the backup goalie you know what i mean like it makes it makes a huge difference and uh like this is an issue that

the pa should be all over but it doesn't affect stars so they don't give a shit so if you're able to carry 23 skaters instead of 20 there's three extra guys who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars more yeah so uh to put it in real terms in case people are saying oh this is just a rich team problem well the ottawa senators are one of these teams as well uh and they're not by any stretch a rich team uh 17 teams right now are going less than 23 players on the roster 17 over have to leave of 32 okay um 11 of those teams have 22 players so that's 11 lost jobs uh four have 21 so that's eight more lost jobs two have only 20 so that's six more lost jobs so we're talking about about 2021 uh 2021 jobs that are just not available and here's the great thing

you know who it saves money for in the end the owners 100 and this is this is the point you know what you know what 23 jobs is an entire expansion franchise so you you added the seattle kraken and you added 23 roster spots but the way you've had the cap so fucking flat forever has taken away three jobs so the idea when you go to the players and say hey we're gonna expand that's gonna create 23 new jobs it just took away 23 jobs the ones you just added and by the way all that expansion money only goes to the owners it doesn't count as somehow somehow the the bum nhlpa did not negotiate h that into hrr are you fucking kidding me it's crazy if you're a player you get uh none of the expansion money no new jobs get robbed i mean this is what not crossing your uh t's and

ask them to pick themselves up after a loss if we don't do the same ourselves we are using all of our resources to reach and put together a great team on the ice and secure a permanent new home that will be the envy of arizona and all of the nhl envy know this we have left no potential option unturned to give our fans the permanent home they deserve the valley is where the organization and i want to be my family lives here we are all in now um they they get into a little bit about how great the team is uh one of the you know uh talking about the coach talking about mullet arena there's not a bad seat in our house he said we are on the eve of the 23 24 season i made the decision several years ago to rebuild our team and secure a permanent home in the valley
