was really good too. Steve Korea was really good in real life for a while. Yeah, he was. It was like really fast. Whenever Freddie or Sparks Was really bad at this or Hutchison At the beginning of the season Whenever they're fighting for it, they're really battling for it They will push themselves 90 feet out of the crease Where they are in the corner And

Not going to stop the puck Hutch stayed in there the whole time He was calm, he was cool, he was collected He looked like an NHL goaltender And I think we owe Michael Hutchinson an apology Or at the very least me Well let me read you this This is from Jeff Fayette

Something flying under the radar right now Michael Hutchinson is now up to a 902 save percentage Since the coaching change And his two worst appearances were in relief For Freddie Anderson in blowouts In starts he is a 927 under Keefe And a 948 in his last four starts Is that good?

It's encouraging Why not? Why not? Why not? Small sample size? Good numbers Even before Keefe Or I think shortly after Keefe

I remember reading something like his workload was the hardest In the entire NHL Like just for the games that he played When he's in he gets shelled Basically And would you look at that Leafs putting him in a position to succeed Islanders, good team, they have trouble scoring

Play him against them, shut out Sens, not a very good hockey team Play him against them, he wins Who else? Detroit. Not a very good hockey team. Almost shut them out until a bit of a controversial call. Controversy and whatever. Don't just feed your backup goalie to the Wolves because that's the gig and it worked once because Curtis McElhinney stood on his friggin' soul. Michael Hutchison absolutely deserves the crown. Good on him. Good on Michael Hutchison. Mine is going to go to 12-time scratchy, Jason Spezza. You are correct, by the way. Jason Spezza, who was with one of the most unbelievable shots.

You don't see shots like that anymore. And what I loved about it— And he's scored on it multiple times now. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, for sure. And, like, the thing is, is that, first off, he had all the room in the world to shoot the puck. But to shoot it that accurately, that quickly, there was no pause. The puck goes over to him.

Now, if you missed it— And from that distance. It's from—yeah, oh, it's from above the hash marks, right? I wouldn't call that a grade-A scoring chance. No, no. Normally that hits the goalie on the pad and that's it. Like right in the chest. What I loved about that, though, there's something so poetic about it.

This had nothing to do with Jason Spezza. We'll get back to him in a second. Is Zaitsev and Hainsey on Ottawa talking about what they were going to do to defend the power play. And you could tell that before the puck drops, Zaitsev kind of leans forward on his toes a little bit. And doesn't have it together. because whatever Hainsey told him, he's not going to do. And all four Senators went over to the right side. Literally, you watch the play from the net cam again.

Spezza, sorry, Spezza is all alone. You got Hainsey and Zaitsev going up and to the right. You got both Ottawa Senators trying to get out to the point and to the wing. And nobody to cover Spezza. What an easy pass. Now, he buried it with a laser beam. But I do not miss that. No.

I do not miss that and I think Hainsey was in the right spot I think Zaitsev was just out to lunch again. I I cut them I cut the send some slack on that goal in the video because Zaitsev and Hainsey are back the Sens are in like a perfect box And the the way I thought it could have been played better as if Nemesnikov was more aggressive But that would have required him to leave Hyman completely alone When he's shooting friggin 20% On the season

But here's the thing You got three guys Going to the right Yeah Zaitsev's gotta handle At least get in the way of Hurry Jason Spezza Right

Do something Right I mean he doesn't have to Get down and block the shot Anybody Anybody Get in a passing lane Do something

And it was the most Zaitsev and Hainsey thing I'd seen since last season That's interesting Because you You didn't blame the defense At all No

Not really You're looking at that play And you're like It's the defense Well it's not It isn't the defense It's not necessarily the defense. Like, Steve makes a good point about Nemestnikov.

Sure. But where is Zaitsev going? Mm-hmm. If those guys are going that way, his job is to form a diamond, right? Yeah, I will say this. So where is he going? I will say this. I didn't enjoy having both those guys on the team at the same time.

I understood their purposes. I never in a million years thought they would be a pairing. Oh, it's great. Yeah, it's great. Were they a pairing on the penalty kill? Yeah, that was the penalty kill. Yeah, that was... That was Leafs' PB2.

Boy, oh boy. It's great. Glad that's not a thing. But there was a couple plays, and I've seen a few gifs. I think Tic Tac Tomar had it today, and there was a few other guys who were throwing up some things. Jason Spezza broke through the Sens zone at one point last night. He looked like their best four players.

Yeah, he blew right past several of the Sens players, and you think, like, I'll be on record for saying this, and I want to take back a horrible take that I had that I didn't know I had at the time. When he was scratched at the beginning of the season I came out and said What's the big deal? This guy is supposed to be a fringe NHL player at this point I didn't know he was this good

No Nobody did How could you? He's also producing He's outproducing his past two seasons By a lot Yes This is the best season he's had

Since his early 30s Exactly And so he's got eight goals in 40 games He had eight goals the last two seasons You know, each of the last two seasons So the thing with Spezza is i could have never called this but what an incredible surprise um and i didn't i didn't realize it at the time because we didn't know at the time that babcock just did stuff because he

liked it um jason spezza for staying positive for thank god somebody got injured so i think it was mitch martyr got injured so jason spezza could stay on the team thank god you're here thank god we have you and jason's betsy you get my crown sorry it was a little bit long and but man that guy has been one of my favorite stories of the year he was literally an afternoon away from getting waived. It's unbelievable. He's probably been some healthy guys away from getting waived as well. If we didn't get all those

injuries, then who knows where he is right now. Thank God they waived Nick Shore, eh? Yeah. And who got claimed? And should have been claimed. I think Nick Shore's a fine player. But not having Jason Spezza that often, too. It was

the strangest thing. I remember the home opener, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. And then obviously more details came out And it became a bigger deal See, I think a lot of people that were saying it was a big deal at the time Knew stuff that we couldn't talk about Like they couldn't have said, yeah, here's what I know Behind the scenes

He deserves the crown Every time he laces up skates For an NHL game Yeah And it would have been so sad If it had ended in Toronto Because he grew up a Leaf fan Yeah

Well, Marlow got 27 goals his first year here. Yeah. So we got it. Now, people are like, well, five of those were NG netters or whatever. Okay, so we got 22.

Actually, all of those goals in the empty net counted. I just... No, they're actually not goals. Oh. Yeah, yeah. What if it was a power play empty net? Is it a minus?

Yes. They take a goal away. Piece of crap. Can you score a shootout empty net goal? Oh. For the power play. Double, triple, not goal.

What the hell is that? He scored the OT winner Yeah, which, yes, he makes up for it. He made up for it, but I remember, because we didn't see that, right, in real time. I think he ducked beneath the boards. Because there was a two-on-one they have to show. And there was a two-on-one. It wasn't until the replay where I'm like, I've never seen that in my entire life.

No. Have you ever seen that? No, never. Have you ever seen that? Never in my life. Because it's an absurd thing to do in the middle of a game. I don't think I've ever even seen, like, I've seen an NBA player have to put their shoe back on because it came off. Guys tie their laces all the time in basketball

because your team can hold the ball and bounce it in a stationary spot so that the game isn't happening. Yeah, and if I throw it out of bounds, I don't think it's a penalty or a foul or anything like that. Soccer, I don't even think I've seen it. I've never seen a hockey player take their gloves off. Like, what?

Imagine if one of the Sens had been like, is he actually... And they just start swatting his gloves away. They should have. Yeah! Oh, my God. It's like, oh, Brady Kachuk. alternate opinion though

you have to admire the confidence yes he literally believes that he can do anything and I want him to have that kind of confidence

now I don't want him to he did say after the game I think not my proudest moment yeah like I think he said he should have gone to the bench but but I want a player

with his skill set which is great to think he can do anything that's the kind of confidence I don't hate that at all that's gotta be Mitch Marner's energy all year but he's still

you're an idiot for doing that yeah sometimes that kind of confidence It's put you in some trouble. But other times he does crazy shit, like Mitch stuff. He does the Mitch thing. I want to give a second crown then. Oh, my God.

I thought you took my crown, but go ahead. No, my second crown also goes to Michael Hutchison. For preventing World War III. Because it would have been, we need a save there. And it's like, he tied his skates. True. And that's the back and forth you have for the next two years. Oh, my God.

I have to give my crown to the man who opened the game with a breakaway that he couldn't finish. You know, they call him the Calgary-born Swedish man. They sure do. But last game, he needed some finish. William Nylander had about four different opportunities where he probably should have definitely buried them unless Anderson didn't stand on his head all game.

He turns into Patrick Waugh against the Leafs. It's unbelievable. It's the most annoying thing ever. So, half-crown to Anderson for stopping the Leafs' best goal scorer right now, William Nylander. Wow. Wow.

As of late, well... Matthews, but... We'll bend the rules a little. And then a full-crown to William Nylander for having so many scoring chances And For that beautiful pass To Mitch Marner

And they tried to catch the Leafs getting frustrated And pinching There was one Justin Hall pinch where I was like What possessed you To even think that that was a good idea But I think after a couple failed two-on-ones Thank goodness They finally figured it out

And I mean Hutch was great Hutch was great when he had to be Leafs didn't make it too too hard on him Yeah it was a bit of a boring game And I theorized In the video that you know Travis Dermott is out of the lineup because he's sick

He's probably the most sick I'm willing to bet there's a bunch of guys on that team who are sick because it's it's 20 players not including coaches and staff and all the reporters that they talk to those those people get sick too like i'm willing to bet some of the leafs are battling for anybody who lives in the toronto area you probably know that literally everyone is sick right now so i don't think the players will escape that the start of this year i've been sick three or four weeks to start the decade i believe it yeah i the only time i wasn't sick was a week and a half ago i'm now finally getting off another cold it's just awful it's

been a brutal winter yeah yeah brutal for that adam's got tuberculosis yeah listen i get vaccines i know that i know that they they do bad things to your health but it also saved me from tuberculosis i couldn't think of it uh thing if you see someone wearing a mask by the way i'm kidding about vaccines by the way i believe in vaccines yes anti-vaxxers Stop Stop it Stop Anyway continue

Kevin Gravel, who has Crohn's disease, he was called up. So he was called up on Saturday for four hours so he could practice with the Leafs. That was the first time he could play hockey in three months. I did not know that He's been cycling through different medications And he was finally cleared for contact And they're like, hey, we need an extra body for practice on Saturday

We're going to call you up for three hours And then you get to come play with the Leafs in practice And that was his first contact in three months I had no idea Round of applause for Kevin Gravel Great to have him back It's no joke Let me say this, good on the Leafs for doing something nice

For the players They've given everyone a little piece of the pie For the last four years They've made things intentionally hard on the players. And I know in some regards, some of that made sense. You didn't want to, especially with the young three superstars that they have in development. I understand them wanting to be like routine and take care of your body and don't get too wrapped up. Yeah, I get that.

But then it was then it's like, well, no, we're going to scratch Jason Spezza because right. We became that's what it became. Let's let's over let's overdo it. And it seems like now there is a real heart and soul. They're still tough on the team, but at least there's like a little bit of like, there's empathy. It's nice. Gravel got a call up and a little bit of money as a result.

No, he actually makes more money in the AHL. Does he? Yeah, because he is contracted 700 grand and when he's in the AHL, it's not subject to escrow. Right. So when he goes up, he gets docked a little bit because he has to pay escrow. Oh, can I not? Exactly.

Wow, that's funny. He doesn't mind being on the Marlies for the payday. Okay, so not Kevin Gravel then But Kenny Agostino was called up Jeremy Bracco was called up Kenny Homie was called up Timothy Lilligren was called up All kinds of guys were called up

And they got a little slice of pie So the Leafs are The Leafs are going into Florida tomorrow night Is that here? Okay, taking on Florida, sorry Going into the mouth of the Cougar Tomorrow night And they are

Officially back in a playoff spot Yep They are two up on the Panthers who may have lost I don't know about Barkov I do know that he was injured last night I haven't heard any updates today They were optimistic was the last update last night And the Leafs are up on the Panthers

But they do not control their own destiny So if the Panthers win each of their next two games They're two points up on the Leafs If the Leafs beat them I think that I want to say that negates the game in hand But they still have it The Leafs right now

If they were in a wild card position Have the exact identical record To the Philadelphia Flyers Both teams 28-17-7 It would come down to their head-to-head Isn't it If I'm not mistaken Only four teams in the Eastern Conference

Have a negative goal differential I don't have that up right now That is factually true The Red Wings The Red Wings have all of it It's Buffalo, Ottawa, New Jersey, Detroit in negative goal differences. Definitely Detroit. And the Leafs are, Jesse, where are the Leafs in the whole league?

In terms of goal differential? No, in terms of points. Points, they are eighth. They're eighth. They're eighth place in the standing overall. And they're barely in the playoffs. Yeah. Something's got to give.

That's a little weird. Something's got to give. It's like, yeah, that's not a way to organize a league. Imagine you have a top. I mean, Florida's 14th. Florida should be in a spot. Yeah. Yes, they're comfortably a top-half team.

Calgary is 17th. And where does Calgary sit? A wild card? Calgary currently sits in the first wild card spot. Bottom half of the league. That's the way it goes. It's tough. It is a tough one.

There's going to be a little bit of that, but the Leafs are what? You said eighth? Yeah. But they're a playoff spot. Eighth best team. Yeah. Yeah, I know. It's just staggering.

Staggering But they've won Three straight out of The All-Star break So have Tampa and Boston Unfortunately They haven't made Any games up on them

But you know You'd expect Boston And Tampa to be great And what's amazing Is how Tampa's Closed the gap with Boston Only five points Separate them

Tampa's got a game in hand That's going to be An interesting race to watch I sincerely hope That Tampa doesn't win it I just don't want to see Boston and the Leafs In the first round again

If it happened I thought Tampa Was way up on the Leafs I think it's only four points Yeah it's not much Well no It's six points Oh is it six now?

there's been a lot of trade talk lately, right? And Matt Dumba's name has surfaced, and Josh Manson's name has surfaced. Kapanen. Kapanen, yeah. Elliot kind of poo-pooed that on headlines. On Manson. Via Manson stuff. I think it would cost too much, and then it's like,

Anaheim's a rebuilding team. Why would they get rid of a cost-controlled deal? It doesn't make sense. Well, and years ago, they, oh, they have this guy, they have this guy, they have this guy, and they've already gotten rid of Montour. Like, are you going to keep any of them now? What was the trade proposal you read out to me before the show? Do you have that?

Oh, for crying out loud. Was it terrible? It was so bad. No, Jesse, it's so good. It would take me. It's so fair. It would take me forever to find it. Where was it?

Who had it? I can't, I can't find it. So it was like Kapanen, Bracco, Lilligren, and a first for Dumba or something like that? It was absolutely ridiculous. Here, I'm trying to find it. Matt Dumba is not Nick Lindstrom, guys. He's good. You don't know that.

I don't need a damn camera in front of Terry Pagula every single day, but address our concerns. Be there.

When you screw up, answer for the mistakes. Be accountable. You know, like, Palo Santana being forced out of the organization, you know, five years ago, how long it was. Like, I don't need an explanation, but it's just been mediocrity. It's almost worse than the Bills drought. Like, and you know what? but if Russ Brandon was running the team still, I highly doubt he would have allowed Chinese knockoff jerseys to be worn by Danny Garrett at Turkey Drive. And just, you know, I, I took, I took my sister to that game, you know, like I've never been to a game with my sister before. It's kind of like a last second thing. And, uh, you know, just watching that, that game was the closest thing I'd ever seen to the previous season, which in my opinion, after the Sabres had their little 10 game

win streak, uh, it was just absolute misery. Um, the, the, the passion wasn't there. I mean it was bad man it was bad and that was that was like watching the previous season and then just hearing throughout the day um just a lot of fans um seeing on twitter call people calling just kind of stating not the exact same things I was displeased about but just just kind of kept building into me all day and I'm just like I was on my way to the gym and I'm just like you know what I'm just gonna call and you know I'm a regular caller and um I just called in and in the beginning there i said i'm gonna organize my thoughts as best i can and you know

i'm pretty good at articulating my thoughts and then right there in the beginning i kind of got like caught up in my words and then i had him just like fuck it just go yeah that's what i like to hear just go and um it's you know it you know i didn't expect you know what happened to happen But I was just another fan, just frustrated, angry, and I just fucking went off. So it's so much more than wins and losses, right? So a big part of your rant was knockoff jerseys, and I had no idea what you were talking about. What were you talking about? okay well um you know one of the biggest things over the past month was um you know you know

the biggest of just going back to the team itself the biggest thing about this team was and i stated it right in the call is that the competitiveness is there ralph kruger is getting a lot out of these players and it's been it has been a lot different like they they haven't been out of games you know and you know every game up until you know you know a few weeks before the all-star break was entertaining you know you know we weren't miserable at the games anymore you know jack is having an unbelievable mvp like year and just he went on that tear until you know he um so he had to miss a game where that streak he was on like like we were glued to the tv we were glued to the ice we're at the game and it was just so much fun and then you know um

Just the biggest thing about this season, the 50th, the Golden season, was the 90s night, the odd night, 70s night. Each night commemorating each era of Sabres hockey since they've come into the league. And 90s night was the big one because the trendiest thing on Sabres Twitter, social media, is the whining to bring back the Goat Head jersey, the old black and red jersey. In my opinion, that was my favorite era of hockey.

That's back when the Sabres-Toronto rivalry was at its highest. That was great, Daniel Briand. My favorite playoff series, hands down, from my childhood. It had nothing to do with those deep playoff runs we went on in what we call the slug years. It was that semi-finals, Buffalo-Toronto, Hachikujo. That series was unbelievable. I was 11 or 12 years old, and that was glued to my TV. I had season tickets with my dad back when it was still Marine Midland Arena.

And just going to those games with him, that's when I really think I fell in love with this team. and just like, you know, I want to play hockey. You know, I want to play goalie. Hashtag was my hero, you know, LaFontaine. You know, LaFontaine was no longer the team at this point. But it was just, you know, you fell in love with that team and that jersey. And I can't tell you the number of goat head jerseys I have in my closet right now, man.

And we just, we wanted that jersey, you know. And we saw what the Canucks did because they came into the league same year. The one thing that was so blatantly obvious on Sabres' Twitter and any social media was bring back that jersey for one night one night one night and there was a lot of speculation leading into the night we weren't sure no one was really gonna then we heard maybe maybe it'll be worn during warm-ups and then we got nothing and then the the alumni come out in these jerseys and it had the goat hat on it i don't know if you like if you've seen the pictures oh i've seen the pictures they were not the jerseys in fact they were complete knockoffs

and looked like Deer League jerseys. And I'm like, and then on top of everything else. By the way, just to interrupt you, Dwayne, for just a second, the goat's head on the jerseys, first off, the collars are not right. They're just gray. The second is that they're not centered properly. Yeah. And keep going.

I'm like, like, and then we find out, like, I mean, it wasn't made, we weren't made aware of it right away, but Dave Andertruck on Odd Night, I mean, I will say this, the Sabres on Odd Night, they gave each, I don't know if you've seen the pictures, but on each section, they dressed the arena up like the Odd, and that was an unbelievable idea. they put a shirt um representing the section the color the color shirt represented the section of what the odd was you know to the key bank center so you know the upper deck were oranges so they had orange shirts on every and every um every seat so it looked like the old odd if you were to like you know if you go back and look those pictures that was an awesome idea everybody got a free shirt it was cool um but then they trot out alumni with misspelled names on the back of their jerseys dave andrew truck's name is misspelled the all-time leading ghost powerplay cold store is like what uh and then and then we find out and then we find out as savers fans that

that you know it's it and then like i'm not sure how this got leaked but you know from people i've talked to um has said that it was a missed deadline with adidas where um the sabers weren't able to be able to use those jerseys because the the nhl has a contract with adidas and you're only allowed to wear so many jerseys and like it just like it blows my mind it's just like the incompetence it's like how do you you know leading into this this year that's what we want the second they announced 90s night that's what we want we want that jersey how do you miss a deadline how does that happen and who's accountable who's responsible and there's nobody comes out nobody says hey sorry we fucked up like we screwed up like nothing like nothing and then like i like

I can get behind the idea that the team might not be good this year I was cautiously optimistic coming into this year thinking that they might uh be able to make a playoff push for a wild card spot you know that they'd be competitive against the better teams like the leaf um you know like the avalanche we played them you know who knows now um you know the better teams in the league you know um tampa bay that we that we could

we that we could we'd be able to skate with them yeah but like i what my expectation like oh we're going to playoffs you know the first year coach come on you got to get real here guys we're in cap hell you know absolute cap hell you know you know we had we had we had to orchestrate a trade for michael for a week um you know with marco scandela and two separate trades i have nothing against michael for a week but you know he's a he's a decent penalty killer but he's not what we needed he's not what we needed and it's it's a big in part because of the cap situation us and a lot of other teams are in. And everything I've done up until this point in hockey, all the coaching, just my playing career, lack thereof, I'm just a beer league scrub now, but everything I've done was because of growing up watching guys like Derek Plant, Dominic Haskins, Dixon Ward, Brian Holsinger, Jeff Sanderson, Steve Shields, Pat LaFontaine, Alexander

McGillian, Rob Ray, Brad May, Donald Ledet, all these. I could go with Stu Barnes, you know, I'm just talking about the 90s guys in general. Michael Groshek. Oh, that's a jam, man. I'll throw that one out there.

when the team loses no hopefully no they're not but you know what they're gonna remember they're gonna remember you know all the stuff that was going on around them right all the stuff that was going on around them and that's what i fell in love with when i used to go game with my dad because the experience was so surreal it was so insanely good and like like i just earlier i was going through pictures of like old Kodak pictures just um of like games my dad's pictures up from the finals um with Hasik you know I have a picture somewhere I'm still looking for it of as I said in that call Jeff Sanders was scoring tripping over the sides of Eddie Belfort into the net I was sitting right behind the net for that I lost my fucking mind um you know um Dwayne
