help.com slash sdp let's start the trade deadline show
the steve dangle podcast with your host steve dangle adam wild and jesse blake
here we go uh i'm gonna start with the big story and the big story guys has got to be
nazim qadri um right we haven't gotten to that yet i will i will say this uh
like live streams and that sort of thing because we are live uh i want to mention everybody that
we can't get to super chats right away this isn't going to be your typical live stream but we will
get to them later on in the show so consider your questions in the in the super chat section
as questions for the press conference and it's going to be a comprehensive show today we're
going to be with you for a while on this friday night and as we said nazim qadri traded back
to the colorado avalanche earlier like joe carter
back to colorado where i won the stanley cup to bring no to bring the the championship back to
denver uh no no no i don't want to talk about the nasm cadger trade well you you don't have a choice
i want to talk about the max current trade okay no don't do this why don't you just do this give
me you do the bit yes no let's not talk about the max curve although he is a noted
Alan Walsh client.
It made sense.
Sorry, it made no sense when Calgary traded for Ryan Strom earlier in the day.
Now it makes some sense.
And the funny thing is, this trade apparently was on the table,
then pulled from the table, is now complete.
And the bugaboo before was the salary retention.
And guess what?
We have salary retention in the deal.
So the deal breaks out like this.
The Flames are going to retain 20% on Nazem Khadri's deal.
I believe that's for three more years.
That's $1.4 million.
To Colorado, Nazem Khadri and a fourth-round pick.
To Calgary, a first-round pick in 2028.
There's a second-rounder, Victor Olofsson,
which was interesting to see his name in there.
He's a very good player.
Max Curran, as you mentioned, Steve.
It's a very...
Maximilian.
Maximilian Curran, right?
The amount of money he's going to make Allen.
Hey!
Maximum million
Max millions
He won the lottery
Now there is
A lot to unpack here
Colorado's cap hit with Nazem Khadri
In the fold will be 5.6 million dollars
When they won the cup with Khadri
He was their second line center
Pretty fair to say now he'll be their third line center
And that might mean Nick Wah is a fourth line center
So we're going McKinnon
Nelson Khadri
Wah
I don't think there's a better spine
a better center group in this entire nhl that's no good that's nails chris mcfarland good work
almost every guy you just mentioned is capable of more if there was a line above the first
mckinnon would be on it it's nelson could do first cadre could do second walk and potentially
do third let's just talk about the emotions of this because um yesterday the leafs made a trade
with the avalanche don't worry we'll get to the leafs later um where they got a first round pick
conditional in 2027 uh now it's confirmed and i'll tell you why because the abs traded their
2028 first so the condition is now gone it was top 12 protected i believe that condition is now
wiped the leafs will have a 2027 uh seven first round pick thank god um and and the thing was
hey that was probably supposed to be the nuts and bolts of the cadre deal and the rumors we
heard out of Calgary were that the ownership group, Craig Conroy took this trade to the
ownership group yesterday and they nixed it. And they said, no, we're not taking this because we
don't want to retain a Nazem Qadri. And Nazem Qadri, there were reports that if he went through
this deadline and continued to be a Calgary flame, he would have been extremely disappointed.
And I think people in Colorado, the players specifically, were very, very disappointed
that Nazem Khadri might not be coming back
because they really wanted him back.
Well, 20% of $7 million per for the next three years,
that's $4.2 million.
And then plus whatever you got to pay him this year.
My guess is they just didn't want to pay the money.
Well, now they have to.
Yep.
And this is going to be very, very interesting
for the Calgary Flames retaining on a deal.
They have, this is their third retention slot.
However, Markstrom and Anderson are off the books
after this year, so it doesn't really matter.
um i'm i'm i want to start with colorado here i want to start with colorado because i talked
about the spot sorry i know i know it's calgary let's go back let's go back to colorado
the minnesota wild made additions all day and previously and in december with quinn hughes
the colorado avalanche kind of sat tight they did make some you know the gerard kulak thing
you know but uh blankenberg blankenberg sure yeah yeah this deal is the deal when the season started
everybody wanted everybody felt like had to happen it didn't look like it was going to happen
it is now happening forget the wherever nazim qadri is talent wise right now guys let's talk
about the emotional part of this sure if you're a player in that dressing room for the colorado
avalanche are you not willing to run through a wall at the moment oh the good times have returned
yeah man absolutely how pumped could you possibly be like okay i i'm gonna keep referencing this but
john carlson gets traded from the washington capitals yep and the capitals are asked about
it and they're on the verge of tears what have you got a guy back let not just got a guy oh yeah i
wonder if this guy's cool on road trips you get noz back dude and you i don't know can we win a
cup of them yes you did and you know what's crazy we outlined um what uh their spine could look like
that's not what puckpedia even has they have mckinnon nelson cadre drury with nick wa third
line right wing next to Kadri and Parker Kelly what a gang of bastards on your third line yeah
that's they're a problem man that's a problem of a hockey team Jesse you you look at this deal
for from the Colorado perspective um like I I guess if they if they had gone through this
deadline without bringing Kadri back it would have felt incomplete right it it really would
have because we've been asking for this for so long and i know drew's not the happiest with nick
wall i would have been happy if i was an avalanche fan and i'm looking on that i'm looking at that
lineup and was the third line center like i think that'd be good enough to go into the playoffs with
but it was clearly a area of weakness that they needed to address and they did it initially and
now they've gone above and beyond and i don't know how you can't be excited for that you know it's
It's not going to be the same Kadri from a couple years ago.
I think his game has dipped a little bit,
but you have Nazem Kadri as your third-line center,
and on a bad team like Calgary, he's their first-line center.
It's a great luxury to have.
So 61 games played this season.
He has 12 goals, 29 assists for 41 points.
That's Kadri?
Yeah.
My guess is he scores at a better rate than that in Calgary.
I was going to say.
Yeah, and less minutes, too, because of where he's playing in the line.
It's worth noting he leads the Flames, kind of by a wide margin.
It's kind of also important news that the Calgary Flames have scored the least amount of goals in the NHL this year.
Like, I think Nazem Khadri's production picks up for sure.
Maybe later on in this deal, oh, it's three more years and he's 38.
You're not thrilled with it.
But the salary cap is supposed to go up so much.
I don't know how much that's going to matter.
And it's also who cares about what happens next year or the year after.
It's about winning right now.
And this puts them in the perfect position to try and knock off either Minnesota or Dallas, whichever one they face first.
And then in the second round, facing either Minnesota or Dallas, whoever they're going to face second.
So Colorado, this is another feather in Nas' cap.
Nas can score goals.
He scored a bunch of goals, obviously, in his NHL career.
But he's always been a primary playmaker, like even going back to junior.
Don't cheat, Jesse.
What?
What do you want to ask?
matt coronado has the most goals on the calgary flames how many i'm gonna say 16 adam says 16
that's not very many 20 flat you said 20 flat uh 14 that's embarrassing so he's he's he's a
playmaker making to whom yeah my guess is the number goes up that's in colorado yeah i think
so too now one thing that i will point out is olison going the other way is you know that that's
a pretty good player i think if you're steve if i'm not completely incorrect victor olison would
be in the top two or three in scoring goals in calgary he's got 11 uh he does have 11 uh 14
assists 25 points i don't understand this for calgary at all like some of the names that were
floated out there like what if nachushkin's in this deal well he's got term uh what if colton's
in this deal well he's got term olufsen makes 1.575 million against the cap he's a ufa like
unless that makes sense to me well unless what why because then he's gone then he's gone i'm
trying to be bad and he's 30 why would i want to keep him around i think this you got to remember
to pure capdome yeah i think that's capdome i think the real loser of this trade is him
like yes oh yeah yeah if you want to play it that way 100 this makes sense for cal you always see
the team who's sending away the good player just take back a salary that's not going to be there
in two months oh i don't feel like this is out of the norm at all yeah it's just he's i don't know
if he's bad enough for all that you know usually it's like a bad player who gets that treatment
well well he wasn't useful to the abs anyway i guess not it's uh especially when you've got
the opportunity to move nick wad to the wing he was playing third line right wing if you move
wa over or you use drury or whatever it is you want to do luxury you've got the opportunity you
can replace that right that's the thing hey man if you want to maybe put nas on the wing
hey why not why not so so you could um you know we've talked about it and we will talk about it
a lot we've got to talk about the wild a little bit later we're not doing that right now we're
going to talk about dallas's lack of moves as well um but this this you know central division
if people haven't been paying attention is so unbelievably good we've got teams one two and
five in the entire nhl at the top of this division and and i think it's other than i'm pretty sure uh
uh even the minnesota wild would be leading or tied with leading basically every other division
in this in this in the league it won't even have home ice in the first round or close to it with
carolina except for the metro they'd be leading the atlantic and the pacific yeah there you go
this is a there's going to be a dog fight yeah and i mentioned drew was probably mad at me i
mentioned colorado facing dallas or minnesota in the first and second rounds excuse me they will
win the central they'll face minnesota and dallas in the second and third rounds yes true i'm
questioning so like let's say this starts today and it looks like right now the kraken are three
points up on the san jose sharks who also made a trade today got thinner on defense hilarious um
i'm i i feel like i feel like colorado does okay in that kraken series if that starts today well
That's what I thought a couple years ago.
Right, Drew?
Hey!
We saw them lose before.
But this is what the Central Division is.
If the Minnesota Wild trades they made today tie into this,
it is an arms race.
It's who's going to load up the most.
Dallas didn't really go that route entirely,
but Bill Guavin is on his thing
and getting all of these deals done
because he knows who he has to go up against,
and those are the two best teams in the NHL,
two of the best teams in the NHL.
Bill Guavin is going to run into a brick wall
in the second round when he runs into Bobby McMahon
and the Seattle Kraken.
The Colorado Avalanche in the next three drafts
currently have...
Are you ready for this?
In the first three rounds of the first three drafts,
they have two picks.
Yo, what?
Oh, my God.
I don't know if I've ever seen a draft pick sheet
this depleted, but it's the first three
where they have got one second rounder in 2027
and one third rounder in 2028.
hey hey two fourths two fifths and four sevenths yeah this year how dare you they're gonna make
yeah drew's drew's doing the cash exactly like who cares you're trying to win a stanley cup
yeah yeah no 100 on the calgary flame side of this they've had and i'm going to include
rasmus anderson in this they've had a very interesting trade deadline i mean you have
big sales here they've unloaded a lot of money cadre yeah anderson like i mentioned and uh
there's one more mackenzie weger mackenzie weger yeah who uh still is waiting on his work visa to
play for utah they acquired a lot of money also uh yeah i traded more i think it's kind of
interesting to see calgary actually commit to this direction and i know this is a team that
had 96 points last year on the strength of dustin wolf's goaltending a lot of people were like hey
you know there's no well i mean at the beginning of the season even their their their president
was saying well no we want more nazim qadri's not less um to see them finally commit to this
direction and this is an organization that has never once in its history picked first overall
never once it's crazy it's kind of refreshing and it's nice to see and it's you know i feel
for calgary flames fans it took forever to get there they had to drag that cow by the nose
but they got there and they finally committed to this direction what do you guys think about what
they were able to grab you're talking about the three uh the three uh second rounders for wieger
they got a first round pick for cadre and a fourth rounder there's the anderson deal
not bad the cupboard looks great wow two second two first round picks in each of the next three
drafts that's 26 27 28 four seconds this draft two seconds 27 two seconds 28 two thirds this draft
and then just a bunch of other picks sprinkled uh throughout the third and seventh or sixth
okay there flames minister of propaganda how about the flames don't pick in the seventh round until
2029 yeah i think they'll be fine this is this is the ideal way to kickstart your retool in calgary
Because I don't know if it's total rebuild there.
I think they have enough pieces where it doesn't have to be a five-year,
hey, we're in the abyss of nothing like the Blackhawks are kind of in
and we've seen in Buffalo for so long.
I think Calgary, with all of these picks, can turn this thing around fast,
but it might be another year of sucking.
I think it's crazy that after leaving the WHL,
Gavin McKenna might end up right back in Western Canada
on either the Flames or the Canucks.
Uh, Jesse, can you bring up the, the flames, uh, um, uh, uh, lineup right now?
Because the, you know, Ryan Strom's got another year left, uh, at, uh, 5 million bucks, uh,
kind of ran out of room to, to play in Anaheim.
They just had so many good players come in.
I'm looking at this roster.
Blake Coleman, I think was another guy people were maybe hoping would get sold, but they
love him there.
I want to see Blake Coleman back in the playoffs.
Damn it.
He's great.
There's still time.
There's still, uh, but you look at the, you look at the roster and like you said, this
is not a stripped-down Chicago
Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks thing.
There are players here.
Zeri's there. Coronado's
there. Gridden, which everybody's been
so excited.
Zane Parekh.
Zane Parekh. Morgan Frost and
Farabee are still pretty young, 26
years old. There's a lot.
And the most important piece? Give it to me. They have the
goaltender of the future. Dustin Wolfe, who's
already looked like he could...
Not Logan. Damn it, I freaked it up.
That's not who I know. Dustin Wolfe,
who looks like he could contend for a Vesna for many of the years
in his long contract that he just signed.
So that's solid core there.
Go use all those four second-round picks and your two first-round picks
in every of the next drafts to go support those players,
and this will be easy for Calgary to turn this thing around.
Another trade that happened today that touches our heart a little bit
is friend of the show Jacob Bataglia's second-round pick
of the calgary flames was traded to the new york rangers right at the trade deadline
for brendan offman now brendan offman has played hockey in the nhl he's a former first round pick
2021 hasn't quite panned out perhaps the way that they thought six foot six feet tall he's
23 he's from pickering bataglia is having a a pretty darn good year he was with the france
and then he was traded to the firebirds um kind of just wanted to mention that but yeah i was i
was curious about that deal because i feel like maybe calgary's is looking at offman going uh
project player he's played in the nhl we like him i don't know here's what rangers fans need
to know about jacob bataglia his nickname with the uh with the kingston frontenacs was baits
yeah um which i love because of baits bataglia his father and by the way that's a joke uh that's
not his dad there's there's no relation that we know of they just call him baits anyway um yeah
so far uh in the ohl with the fronts uh in 36 games 14 goals 13 assists 27 points not bad and
then in uh with the firebirds 22 games 12 goals only four assists greedy uh 16 points he's a good
player he's had a good season and friggin um went backstage after we were done interviewing him and
while we finished the show he ate my shrimp taco yeah well you deserve that i think you had that
coming um yeah anyway so i didn't i didn't think offman had a place really in the rangers
organization right like they have they have a lot of guys on i think the same side of defense that
he plays if i'm right he's a left winger uh left left left side oh sorry our brendan offman is a
forward i feel like they they have a little bit of uh talent there in their system on that
in the winger depth that they can afford to take this chance here and they've kind of know what
brennan is so well they can they can move off of you know swap i was going to say a bit of a
disappointing 16 points in 26 ahl games this season only the one goal one point in 17 games
i don't know what this player is going to turn into and then i saw he was born in pickering ontario
this guy should have gone higher that yep i agree we should have gone higher than 16th uh now uh
moving off of this uh big congrats to the abs and big congrats to producer drew who's running
the board today he's having a good day thoughts yeah drew give it to us he's struggling with his
microphone it's true no it's expired it's expired move on that's not wrong um i mean nothing but
excitement over here i mean i interrupted one of the recordings earlier screaming gadry's back to
colorado you did oh fuck they're filming um yeah nothing not to be excited about i mean just stacked
So if they lose, I'll be upset.
Stanley Cup?
I mean, yeah, it's Stanley Cup or bust.
Has to be.
So you were somewhat down on the Nick Waugh trade
because Waugh is not Nazem Kadri.
Now that you have both, how do you view it?
Yeah, Waugh can sit in the press box.
I don't care.
Press box?
Stop it.
Jack Drury's already the 4C.
We don't even need Waugh.
How dare you?
We'll see.
He's really good.
I think he's a really good player.
Maybe not as good as Nazem Kadri, though.
Yeah.
Okay.
So this is a very interesting day for Colorado.
Very interesting day for Calgary.
Great to see Calgary commit to a direction.
Sometimes life throws your curve balls and you don't have time to get to them.
And that's where TaskRabbit comes in.
And I think you should check this out because here's the deal.
One of the things, one of the weird quirks about my condo building is that they use my

should download that taskrabbit.ca code dangle let's go to um matthew darsh and the new york
islanders if you're unfamiliar with the name matthew darsh get familiar because i think he's
going to be uh general manager of the year and some people were saying oh no it has to be dubas
uh matthew darsh in the last 12 months uh in the last 12 actually less than 12 months it's been
nine months had to trade noah dobson yep got two first form at the draft last year that's okay he's
also then he was able to get schaefer and then brought susie and palat in his depth guys the
lottery balls got schaefer yeah well he could have picked someone wrong yeah he could have picked the
wrong guy right uh and then brayden shen today as well this has been a great nine or ten months to
be an islanders fan after a few years of aimlessness and i don't mean to um i don't
mean to be hard on lou lamorello uh but i feel like having the guy that trained under eiserman
and then briseois in tampa has really transformed where the islanders are going also buoyed by the
fact that ilia sorokin's just been incredible um well and i would hammer lou more if he didn't go
to back-to-back conference 100 that's also so but like this has been this is a good day for the
aisles and callum richie's been playing second line center or third line center depending on
the day he's been okay for what they gave up i thought he might be out the door oh yeah i'm
kind of surprised he's still there so the the the victory in itself the brayden shen trade um really
solidifies their center ice and you know we said it in some of our videos today um we've seen team
after team after team um sink in the playoffs against great competition not having great
centers and when you've got horvat um you've got shen and you've got jean gabriel pajo up the
middle that's pretty damn good like oh yeah and casey tazik is on the fourth line too because
he's forever been gonna be there he'll be there till we're dead um it's a it's a really really
interesting group and kind of a pain in the ass and i think that division guys is wide open it's
wide open now and like going forward you didn't give up callum richie you didn't give up uh cole
eisenman you didn't give up victor ecklund you didn't give up kashon acheson like utah has been
given a lot of flowers over the last 48 hours for uh they have some really prized prospects and they
didn't give up any of them yeah islanders did the same thing i you know you could argue who improved
more or whatever but i really like what they're doing um the trade by the way for shen was uh
shen from st louis for drew in uh uh gidloff a 2026 first and a 2026 third round pick i think
the islanders can afford to give up a first round pick when they made two in the draft last year
yes well three actually in that first round and i pointed out uh in the video that we did but in
case you missed it the 6.5 million that you have to pay shen for the remainder of this year next
year and the one after is mitigated by trading druan who makes four million dollars this year
and next so braden shen like uh net salary cap gain next season is 2.5 million that's great point
amazing right yeah i i think the islanders are positioned as well as any team in the nhl to be
like a contender for the next five years and like really do some damage in the league because of the
way they've i don't know how much you got to chalk it up to luck and like falling into matthew
schaefer but a part of this sport and a part of being a good gm is sometimes getting lucky yeah
and they've been able to bridge this gap where they do have a bunch of young talent like richie
and schaefer and heinemann and and uh they've added that to the older players that they had
there already in barzal who's having a really good season i think leading them in goals and
horvat and anders lee who's ageless and is going to be there forever and sezikis as well that you
already mentioned so i don't know i love what the islanders have going and uh yeah they're going to
be good for a little bit here i don't really buy into the luck thing like you you look at some of
the top teams in the nhl like there's a bunch of lottery balls in there right teams picking in the
top five like you know what they're allowed to be lucky so are we screw you we have faith that you
don't totally Heinemann by the way was a part of that Dobson deal 16 goals this year I know he may
not be ever be like an 80 or 90 point guy but that's a pretty good comp you know a pretty good
addition to what they were doing they're not missing Dobson on the back end and they've gained
Heinemann and he's going to be a useful for and he is a useful forward for them yeah I don't know
seems like pretty good trade yeah I'm not hating if I'm the Islander 24 points in 63 games man you
know how good that trade was i thought he was on the habs i was like wow dude dude they got those
picks and heinemann yeah that was a good deal now i'm looking at i'm looking at this and i want to
just kind of bring your attention to the standings because right now the islanders are three points
up on the columbus blue jackets and the blue jackets are not in the playoff picture at all
they're a point behind the boston bruins same amount of games played um and the blue jackets
did make some moves, which we will talk about later on in the show. But the point I'm trying
to make here is that the Metro, if you fall out of the top three, it's entirely likely you missed
the playoffs completely. And so the Islanders are the third of three at the top of that division.
They are tied with the Penguins in points, but the Penguins have played two less games.
The Islanders needed to bolster this and reward this group. What has been surprising,
really surprising is how little their competitors did when you look at the penguins in carolina
hurricanes the penguins got made one deal for soda bloom uh just kind of fun and the hurricanes
didn't do anything and so i i'm looking at the islanders going okay you got to reward darsh for
this you got it you got to play like you deserve this trade but boy um i think that this division
is a lot more wide open than people think it might be and you know steve we talked about this
in some of the videos we did today the islanders maybe they play the penguins in the first round
probably play the penguins in the first round they're gonna be a pain in the ass that's jump
ball to to me like it it so much hinges on like how healthy is crosby how long is malcolm suspended
um you know do they do they falter it's it's scary times man it's scary because if you dip a toe in
the non-playoff waters you have these piranha called the columbus blue jackets ready to consume
you down to the bone eight one and one in their last ten eight one and one in their last ten which
by the way so are the hurricanes so i i kind of look at the hurricanes and yeah they didn't do
very much also what do they need yeah now steve we know what this team looks like in the playoffs
we do but they got a lot of their busy work done in the summer right like nick eelers was a very
big fish keandre miller was a pretty significant uh trade for them uh those are the two that that
just jump uh front of mind um they got to stay healthy and we'll see jess i want to i want to
go to you because you're down on the hurricanes i'm not down on them in the regular season
no but this this ties into the islanders conversation because if they can get through
pittsburgh it looks like that'll be their opponent which i think will be an interesting
matchup like i'm not leaning towards either side right now i think the islanders can hang with them
and you were saying like you believe they should have done something with their cap space
to improve their odds in the playoff because they have struggled the last few seasons when they
reached these really good opponents can you tell me how much cap space they have uh yeah right
there yeah eight million bucks are you rejected are you serious guys and like they just sold a
12 and a half percent stake in the team for what was it over oh it's not it's not like so they have
this means like they'll end the season about 8.4 under like listen i know the prices were high and
i know eric tulsky is a very very smart guy and i'm not even saying the islanders get through the
penguins because you never bet against crosby and malkin right you just don't you still can't
that's a great series until we're shown otherwise and the and the thing is the carolina hurricanes
at the playoff started today they'd be playing the canadians the canadians didn't make any major
additions um you know they did get phil to know he can shut down your scoring pretty good we saw
that you saw him do it to matthews and marner their addition is just their young guys getting
better but i think i think if carolina does get through montreal because i think montreal's
goaltending is just not good enough this year um and i you know maybe they beat the islanders or
the penguins but when you get to tampa in that conference final if they're healthy they're going
to chew you up they are now the health part is major hegel point headman uh vasilevsky all have
had major injuries in the last few years but they just added cory perry who's i would love to call
him a rat bastard but he's actually the worm um you know this is a this is a mean ugly and and
when it comes to kucherov crazy legitimately nuts group going up against a team that looks largely
the same as last year and i'm not trying to take away from the eeler signing i thought it was a
great signing they are deep and forward but this has been the problem with them every year they
always get to the second round sometimes to the third and then they run into a team that's actually
really tough no adam like listen i mentioned eelers i mentioned keandre miller but you need
to get on board get on board what steve you got to put your your money in the box what what box
you got to take your seat on the which train you got to ride the bussy bus oh it's a bus
the random bus the bus the bus the bus the bus the bus the bus dude the guy essentially hasn't
lost is he yeah was he 22 23 one is a 903 save percentage which might not jump off the page at
he's 25 three and one that's insane that's crazy also ignoring probably the biggest deal of the
day give it to me carolina did make they acquired nick delorier for a seventh round oh like
banger alert listen it does make them tougher but it doesn't even warrant a video but it doesn't
make it no i mean he doesn't have a goal i think he has one assist nick delorier is like the least
when they got kyle clifford it's like yeah but that doesn't address the lack of toughness in the
top six right and that's until i'm proven otherwise right i can only go on the history
and carolina has given us tons of history and tons of history with this group this is a great
regular season team who regularly wins playoffs playoff rounds but why do they get eliminated
every year guys uh well they get out they get run the fuck over yeah well adam let me tell you a
story when i was a kid my neighbors had a yappy dog next door neighbors they had this friggin
wiener dog who was really annoying rusty i think was his rusty was a rusty wiener i'm pretty sure
his name was rusty he was a rusty wiener and and that would set the whole neighborhood off all
these dogs and they were all barking at each other a few neighbors down they had a rottweiler
and the neighborhood went quiet i think that's what the carolina hurricanes are hoping nick
delorier is we keep talking about matthew olivier like he's the heavyweight champ of the league
and i do think that he is nick delorier is probably top three and i'm not sure he's three
really true that's a tough but olivier scores man yes he does yeah i wanted to say like guys
carolina is missing that top end talent there's a reason they traded for randon last year they
don't have that bite at the top of their lineup who's their best player aho he's not brandon
bussey yeah exactly they don't have the scoring that's what always lets them down in the playoffs
They needed that game-breaker,
and Ehlers hasn't been that this year for them.
Jacob Slavin's their best player, by the way.
Fair.
Yeah, that's fair.
But yeah, they have three guys over 20 goals.
They're not doing nothing.
Svechnikov, I want to say, had a slow start,
and he's been really good.
The one thing I would say...
I don't disagree with that entirely.
The scoring goes away, but when the whistles go away,
their scoring has gone away.
That's what's happened.
So I've been very kind to them in this video.
When they got eliminated last year,
I was less kind, a lot less kind,
and I was talking about firing Rod Brindamore.
oh yeah whoa if that happens again i still think he's an incredible coach but if that happens again
at what point do you have the conversation all right like we've plateaued here we can't get
above a certain point or do you weaponize the fact that in the summer you're going to have like
15 million dollars they're gonna have that they have their first round pick this year they can
make a trade at the draft they can they have actually they've got two firsts in the next two
years and then two in 2028 alone um the rob brittemore thing is very interesting because
like i'm not a person who watches 82 carolina hurricanes games so i'll be honest about that
but when i do step your game when i do tune into the out-of-market carolina hurricanes games
i know what brand of hockey the hurricanes play and i know kind of how the game's gonna go when
they're controlling the game they got a lot of shots on goal a lot of them aren't really high
danger but they do control kind of the score effects they play good defense and they control
the play a lot it's a lot of the finishing isn't there as the high-end teams then the playoff
games they go exactly how they're supposed to when they're carolina hockey uh carolina
hurricanes hockey and they play that exact way it's just a matter of like does the other team
capitalize on their opportunities and if they keep doing that year after year after year and
they keep not winning the stanley cup maybe there's a case to be made for changing the coach
and the management i jump in with something to generate a new style of hockey and also maybe
bring in some other players can i jump in with something it's interesting both feet out what if
they don't care what do you mean what if the owner's okay with that yeah third round appearances
you can also make the argument and i'm going against myself we're in it every year what more
can i ask for my my group we are in it every year we get a chance every year and this isn't the
leafs because uh when was the last time they didn't win a playoff series the canes that's a
really good question i don't know that's the one bit of pushback i always get because the leafs
would always top out at a certain point yeah and you always top out at a certain point i'd rather
top out where they do you get the yeah but toronto's yeah uh let me pull it up i'm pulling
it up right now if you're in it every year and and you just want kicks at the can carolina's
doing the right thing yep like they are they are in it every year and they're always amongst those
teams who have a shot at the stanley cup so if that's the right way to run a front office then
i guess they're doing it right i think honestly if there's two sides to it if dubas had had his
druthers we would look the the leafs would have looked like the canes right just having that every
single year um it's it's a it is it's it's a good point um and yeah i mean it's they do have their
hardcore fans and everybody's in it and that sort of thing but yeah they haven't they haven't not
won a playoff round since 2019 2020 what a streak and that's coming off of rod brendamore's first
year where they went all the way to the conference finals so they they conference finals first round
loss second round loss second round loss third round loss second round loss third round loss
i mean plateaued it's like they're in it they're in it when do you have to concede that the way
brindamore coaches hockey and the lack of really a star star number one player in this league on
their team is kind of what's holding them back it can be either or it can be both there's some
mix in there that i think is true based on the results and they've acknowledged that with their
actions right Gensel and Rantanen in consecutive years and then nothing this year they clearly want
that and is that team that's going to run you over present in the eastern conference right now
yes is there a Florida light Tampa the Tampa Bay lightning that's not how they play they're
aggressive and tough they play a little differently they play a little differently
um I would love I'd pay to watch a Hurricanes lightning series I think you're gonna see it and
unfortunately we would have to wait and i believe until the eastern conference final at earliest
well i think that's what's going to happen i mean that's what i'd have my money on if i'm
the hurricanes dynamite i would be worried about the boston bruins oh i would be worried about the
tampa bay lightning i would be worried about the buffalo sabers i think there are teams in the east
that could take there's a lot closer than i think you guys think of for the hurricane i think i think
the sabers are a nightmare stylistic matchup for this yeah i also no no no for the sabers
Oh, the Hurricanes are for the Sabres?
Because the Sabres have the really high-end scoring
and the really good goaltending,
but their underlying metrics aren't very good.
The Hurricanes are going to have the puck that whole series.
So if, but, and then the Sabres have to solve this goalie
that is by all accounts unsolved.
So we thought about the same things
and came to different results.
Yes.
Because I think about it,
the Sabres are able to score
despite having bad possession metrics.
Right.
Their possession metrics are already bad.
Yeah.
The Hurricanes can't make them worse.
They're already ranked like 23rd in the league of five on five
in the offensive zone possession.
So they don't need the puck.
And the Hurricanes are going to be happy, happy having the puck.
And the Sabres have overcome that all season long
to be tied for first in the Atlantic.
That's so interesting.
They're going to find their way to score goals.
Same observation, different takeaway.
That's fascinating.
They also just added Shen and Stanley.
And if one of those two guys are playing along with Kesselring
on the bottom pair, they are going to ground.
you'll be putty after the series you won't have any bones left man you'll need that harry potter
skelegro shit to to get your your body back together like it's good reference this is a
that's that's the issue i have that is the issue i have with the canes it's always been the issue
i've had but maybe this year is the year yeah kicks at the can kicks at the can jesse blake
kicks at the can uh now we are gonna get to we have not done the leafs we've not done the sabers
there's plenty more to get to on the docket and i think uh i think though there's another
big team that we've missed out on but first i want to ask you this you ever felt unstoppable
during a workout yeah checked yourself out in the mirror looked hot as hell maybe maybe maybe
walking down the street in street wear and you're like damn looking fine today look at that butt
100 oh man every day in the mirror what a treat for me uh
let me say this fabletics baby you got to give fabletics a try now you guys know that we wear
fabletics i'm wearing a fabletics t-shirt today which is showing off my guns they're not great
guns but maybe one day they will be i'm hoping oh you're selling yourself short uh uh you can
get 80 off everything when you're a fabletics vip and honestly the thing that kind of surprised us
all is the quality touch me steve it's okay um high-end activewear you will easily pay a couple
hundred bucks for but with vip memberships it basically pays for itself you're buying the vip
for an 80 discount and then when the season turns over and you need clothes and you need to buy
clothes for people on your list maybe there's a birthday maybe it's the holidays maybe it's the
summer whatever you can be the connection you know what i'm saying so listen we're talking
waistbands not creeping down the quality is amazing joggers that keep their shape jackets
that are warm without being bulky which is important for me because i'm bulky uh these are
all the things you get with fabletics you're gonna love it and we want you to try it so fabletics
already has incredible deals but give this a shot 80 off everything when you sign up as a vip with
fabletics go to fabletics.com stp there is a style quiz there and it's going to help you if you're
like me and you're not really great with this stuff it's gonna help you kind of pick your things
and you know suggest even full outfits for you maybe even the jamar chase collection ah yes just
had its first first drop a few weeks ago again use uh go to fabletics.com slash sdp and be sure
to select sdp when prompted to unlock your 80 off that is fabletics.com slash s d p sorry i was
distracted uh by a text i got from a buddy who just said where's the podcast you effing dweeb
well it's happening right now it's happening right now by the way the link yeah well no we're doing
the thing you're clearly texting you're right you're right no texting i was reading my buddy
and i'm gonna bring it up in the show but like whatever i'm steve uh by the way if you if you're
if you're wondering about the toronto maple leafs don't worry that's coming we will get to it tell
all your friends about that because it's going to be interesting we've got some interesting insights
there but in the meantime oh are you guys ready to apologize and kiss it apologize are you ready
to apologize and kiss it i just want to know oh i know who this is are you going to apologize and
kiss it adam do i get to guess i've been apologizing and kissing it since like the
beginning of advent okay jesse are you ready since you seem to know who it is i have a lot
of practice with connor hellebuck so i can i think i can do it for this man but i don't know
if i agree on the apology all right i think there's an apology necessary a little bit you
know what's you know what sucks about being a loudmouth dumbass this could be about the red
wings sabers or ducks actually it's about the blues son of a gun and you know on monday or
monday or wednesday show both of you were like oh dog armstrong out here talking crap again about
the the shit that he's gonna sell and he's never gonna do any of it robert thomas things again
jazz you guys were jazz handing it for sure um and they actually did sell right they did they
sold shen they sold falk and uh they show they they sold bukestad they said listen they sold
some big names guys yeah i would like to congratulate um doug armstrong on being 500
on asking guys to wave their no move clause so we'll get to that in a second he's two and two
at a boy the islanders uh acquired brad shen from the new stables blues for drew and uh gidloff i
told you all this already but i'm going to repeat it first round pick from colorado and a third
round pick from the new jersey devils also the detroit red wings acquired justin fogg from the
blues for justin hall uh dimitri buchnalikov uh 2026 first round pick buchnalikov by the way is
a khl player scores a lot and a 2026 third round pick which originally belonged to san jose they
were not able to get pareko or thomas across line i don't know how serious the robert thomas stuff
really i don't actually was like i think they got to a point where teams were close but whatever it
is that they're asking it's a lot i think it was a situation where if you give us the sun and the
moon and i can fleece you i will give you robert thomas yeah i think it's the the when people say
like oh everyone's available for a price i think robert thomas was available for a price nobody
was willing to pay that price i think pareko happens in the off season oh pareko is a different
story yeah yeah that was done so i got a story for you guys um the st louis blues came out and
they are mad about that pareko thing leaking now i think and everybody gets all moralistic about
this when a trade leaks before a player has been asked to wave i know it's going to bother the
player i know it's going to bother the team but that's the flipping game man the entire hockey
world is tim robinson in a hot dog suit going we're all trying to find the guy who did this
yes and i think it's a little bit i i just i see people online like tweeting this oh it's so wrong
listen i know it's an uncomfortable position cold break will be okay and cold break oh controls his
destiny that's why he waved or he said no no thanks to the training in buffalo you know what
sabers fan said okay you don't want to be here we don't want you how to get out it was leaked
like an insider oh yeah yeah where'd they get the info it's a good question so i don't know
let me begin this by saying i don't know who does it benefit the sabers or the blues that
this information got us there the blues yeah because in theory it's it's pressure on the
player you turn the screws on a guy who has a no movement clause from your team does not want to
leave your team so by leaking it in theory you might just guess guesstimate the call is coming
from inside the house i would say it benefits both teams because there there's oh yeah the
sabers pressure on the sabers to hey this is out there he doesn't want to disappoint that fan base
and say screw you i don't want to come to buffalo so i think both sides are benefiting by it leaking
out to the public so i think both of them were probably very happy that it was out there i think
sabers fans are like what the hell man yeah that's that's why it's beneficial to the sabers management
because they're trying to embarrass pareko into not making that because pareko's sitting there
being like oh i have to tell this fan base screw you i don't want to come to your town and there's
pressure on him to say yes because he doesn't want to do that yeah but what do i care what this fan
base thinks of me i don't play for them right yeah i think that's that's still like a little
bit of pressure i guess both sides are benefiting also jesse it's good for sabers management because
it makes it seem like they're active right oh yeah they're trying to make moves and look at
the deal that we got done that he kiboshed right yeah now that's one of those things like in life
you cheer for people who try and fail because
at least you tried. It's not really a sports work.
According to Jeremy Rutherford, the Blues
checked on the phone call records,
texts, and emails of staff members
to try to find out who leaked the Colton
Pareko trade attempt, and they could not find
the culprit.
I need a documentary now.
I need a Netflix documentary
with a drone shot of a dusty road.
Do you think
Armstrong is suggesting, hey, we couldn't find it on our
end, Buffalo? Oh, that's 100%.
I think it's Steve's.
i think that's a little uh tim robinson hot dog of the blues to be like we need to search the
people's phone to find out who could have done this dog armstrong sitting there on his phone
with a text to dragger like it doesn't make sense that it would be pareko's agent no no right oh no
dragger start the armstrong start the investigation on who found it we don't know who did it but like
you can there's a few pieces on the guess who board you can flick down like come on it's i
think that's nonsense i think that there is a leak from the blues to look around in their hot
dog costume being like who did this i need yarmo and his uh finish i don't give a gosh darnness
to clap back because i think that'd be great oh nothing nothing is better than a nordic person
just giving you a dry stare and i'm sure you're almost pretty damn good at that um however uh it
does look like pareko's days in st louis might be up however too and we talked about this in some of
the videos that we did armstrong's days in st louis might be up he was supposed to move up to
potentially being the president steen is going to take over it looks like this off season i think
that was either was the plan it was either this off season or next maybe steen is a no move but
it's sounding more and more like you need to check in everything with the blues but it's sounding more
and more like steen is going to um take over this coming summer so i'm curious about does steen go
well wait a second i like robert thomas and jordan cairo and colton pareko they're 26 27 and 29 why
would i sell those guys it definitely gives him uh the opportunity to come in and be good cop
yeah hey fellas i know that douglas tried to trade you but uh you know hey call me alex
mr steen is my father um even though he played with half of these guys it gives him the opportunity
to reassure robert thomas reassure colton pareko reassure any of the other dozen and a half guys
who they were trying to trade all of them have no move clauses so yep um uh that is a very good
point and i look at this so let's talk about uh let's talk about the players they did sell
ultimately if steen likes pareko and wants to keep them this might have worked out great because
they sold a guy who in shen who's 34 and they sold a guy in falk who's 33 so that's hey that's
great well and you get a highly motivated player you want to be here show us absolutely st louis
i think is one of the bigger winners of this deadline just for the assets that doug armstrong
was able to get back for these players like that's a good haul for justin falk i think detroit needed
that player a hundred percent you need justin falk in your lineup that's what you're missing
but they did pay a high price for that my bias as a content creator is annoyed with him but if i
step outside of that objectively yes they did acquire can i say this they got more for shannon
Falk than the Carolina
Hurricanes arguably did
for Mikko Rantanen.
They got two firsts,
two thirds. They also got
Bush Nalikoff,
who is a prospect.
He's 22. We'll see if he comes over.
They did get our old friend Justin Hall.
They got a player in Druin, and they
got Marcus Gridloff as well,
who is also a prospect, 20 years old.
I think you've pronounced his name five different ways.
Gridloff? Is it Gidloff?
I think it's Gildoff.
gildo gildo gildo gildloff it's gid we'll never know lof it doesn't matter whatever i'm just
saying doug may have set the prices high and the market sort of determines what you get
but he he did pretty well oh yeah he did he did a really good job selling this trade deadline and
they have more to sell on their roster this upcoming draft and off season like the binnington
rumors started this trade deadline i can see that happening at the draft or in the off season for
somebody who wants a goalie the cam fowlers uh can be sold like there's an option because he's
34 and i don't know how long he's sticking around the rebuild and then you have the good players who
are young and in their early 20s around the the guys that you're gonna sell it's good here's what
you do uh so puckpedia has drew in up there on the top line i swap him and neighbors because
robert thomas is a playmaker so you have neighbors thomas snuggerood second line you have drew and
setting up the blues top scorer in pavel buchnevich and you also have jordan kairu
you get those numbers up and flip them yeah i like that that's what they're gonna end up doing
i like that a lot um yeah it's it's a it's sort of a fascinating thing so that's my question guys
are you uh are you ready to kiss it and apologize no well you're not gonna kiss it and apologize
steve because i know you know why because i don't want to sing his praises uh loud enough that
everyone's like oh so he can be leaf's gm then well i still look at the full body inevitable
he might not be leaf's gm he might be president yeah president fine but gm no the power of
doug compels jesse are you man enough to kiss it and apologize there's no fear in doug armstrong
that's for certain oh yeah like there's fear in gms in this market and there's a reluctance to
make the moves you should be making and doug armstrong has never shown that where it's maybe
sometimes moving off of a player too early like petro but he's never been shy to be out there
with his intentions and with his feelings on a team and move the players he needs to move so
i will concede that you won't so are you gonna kiss it and apologize jesse you won't even need
an announcement that doug armstrong has been hired by the leafs uh though they will simply
just announce a morgan riley trade without asking him to wave first right oh doug must be here there
There he is.
There he is.
There's Doug.
So neither of you will kiss it and apologize.
No, I'm still going to chirp him a bit.
Wow.
Jesse, no apologies into the camera?
I don't know what I've apologized for.
Wow.
Look at the stubbornness.
I've had my feelings on Doug Armstrong all along, and Drew needs to weigh in here.
You know what, Adam?
The Blues have had a bad season, but count on Doug Armstrong to find the silver lining.
What does that mean?
The Olympics.
Oh, it's silver.
Oh, no.
Stop it.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah, what is wrong with you?
I'm chirping him.
No.
You can't put us through weeks of this Robert Thomas and Colton Perico stuff.
and expect me not to chirp you.
You're chirping yourself by bringing up the Olympics.
You are Canadian.
He made the team.
I had nothing to do with it.
If I was in charge, they'd have won.
That's like bringing up 1967.
Like, what the hell are you talking about?
That was a good year.
They won.
Leafs won.
What's up, Drew?
Guys, Doug Armstrong hasn't built a good team
in his entire tenure.
I don't know why he's given many praise.
The Blues have always sucked.
Even their cup run was the luckiest bullshit ever.
It's just, their team always sucks.
He had a good day.
He's not entirely wrong.
Sorry, this is the Central Division coming into this.
If you're wondering where the hostility comes from.
Hey, listen, Drew watches a lot of Central Division hockey.
Maybe Drew's rubbing off on me.
Maybe that's where this is coming from.
That's the bias.
I don't remember having this many Doug Armstrong days.
He had a good day.
He had a good day.
He had a good day.
All right.
Now he's got to do something.
The chat is calling Drew very salty, by the way.
Salty about what?
You've got to pull your mic down.
Salty about what?
Being the worst team in the league?
Thanks.
All right.
Now let's talk about the Red Wings for a second here
Because we talked
Speaking of the worst team in the league
Red Sabres
We talked about the Islanders part of this
Red Sabres
Pretty damn good this year
Boy am I eating shit on that tape
Dude if the playoffs start today
Yeah Adam I think you get a pass bud
No Red Wings fans just
Are so angry with me for the last couple of years
You specifically?
Yeah oh yeah because I was so hard on them
And guess what I was right until this year
Somebody to your left was as hard
i didn't call you didn't call them the red sabers no i didn't so and as as the playoffs started
today it would be buffalo versus detroit which is very literally the red sabers series hilarious
which is absolutely perfect it's it's it's fantastic now i want to know about what you
guys think about the detroit red wings good specifically um when it comes to good the way
justin falk fits in this lineup because you know whenever you play detroit the thing that stands
out is how good they are cider and edmondson yeah right you remember those 24 and 22 years old it's
insane they have an incredible top pair sandy and public but then after that you've got charot
who's admittedly old good in the playoffs because he loves cross-checking people and never getting
called he's listen during the regular season they play hockey and there are times he struggles with
that yeah in the playoffs they play playoff hockey right and he's good at that different sport
so it's like uh it's like uh telling a lacrosse player to play bandy there's a there's a learning
curve they're not the same thing so the the red wings now have edvinson cider charot and falk and
so your right side is cider and falk which means cider's got the top power play falk i would
imagine has the second power play and you've also got uh johansson and sanding pelica uh and then
in the press box they show their bernard docker who was on waivers several times last year
and whatever's left of travis hamannik well and speaking of whatever's left uh david prawns on
ir right now but they just acquired him yesterday um this uh sure looks a lot better than it did
this morning that perron deal too just to note it's essentially a free david perron because they
get the third round pick from pittsburgh for soderblom and they spent a fourth uh to get
perron out of ottawa that upgrades to a third it goes to a third if they advance to the second
round he plays 50 so free perron that's kind of bad kind of yeah yeah that's not a bad way he'll
be he'll be nice and rested coming off that surgery so he'll be fresh for the playoffs i don't know if
anyone's ever come off a surgery feeling rested well yeah maybe you're right i think he'll be a
lot i'm just talking about mileage on body for a 37 year old and i said this before it's an overpay
for justin falk but that's exactly the player they need and this is why you are here and you
have all these assets you've been rebuilding for so long you might as well spend them spend them
while you got them put your chips in for a little bit here it's an overpay off and play well it's
an overpay if your team's old theirs isn't please ignore camp talbot being 38 like these are back
of gold these are back they're fine the extra year like next year makes everything okay with
the justin falk deal where it's like you paid a lot but it's not just the pure rental he's on pace
for like i don't know 50 points like from the blue line uh over half a point of game you on
the on the terrible blues on the terrible blues and he shoots right-handed open market july 1st
what does he go for a lot at least that at least six and a half i think it's a lot more i agree i
think it's a lot more so and you don't have to worry about that it this is the premium at this
deadline there's always a premium for something and this year it's guys with term shirat's deal
by the way expires but he's already signed an extension and next year he'll make 3.85 million
rather than 4.75 so he's going to go down 900 grand uh so they're going to be able to keep
this group together for a bit sure and that's where our deal goes to at least 38 yeah old
It is a little old, but also the cap's going up
and his money's going down.
Yeah, as of next year,
Sherratt's deal is like 3.5% of the cap.
Like, who cares, right?
Because it's going to be a $105 million cap.
So, you know, whatever.
Here, Puckpedia feature.
This is for free.
Put every contract in 2016 dollars.
Oh, man.
Tell me, okay, Sherratt makes this much.
What is that in 2016 dollars?
right in terms of percent of the cap or something like that that's like a million bucks you know and
you're like whoa yeah that's crazy probably not that far off um i want to ask you guys a question
about the red wings do you think they should have done more just the two deals there could have been
more to be done there's a lot of young teams showing up in the playoffs that are kind of
shocked to be there because buffalo swung yeah buffalo swung well and this was the thing i was
like like san jose could have swung but they're they sort of understand what they are buffalo did
the islanders did um detroit not as much but they also there's not nearly as much danger of missing
the playoffs with detroit as there is uh with some of these other teams um i think there's a benefit
to letting this young group learn in the playoffs together adam as probably the most critical of
eiserman himself what do you think um i i look up center and i go you know cop and confer are two
and three i i think if we're if we're if we're kind of nitpicking here that would be the obvious
place you maybe want to get a scoring center but like none of them were available for a reasonable
price like you're not trocheck i don't think you is coming in and scoring that many more points
than either of those guys i'm sure you score more yeah uh it didn't sound like they were in on him
There were some Scott Lott rumors out there.
He's not going to score a ton for you.
It sounds like they don't really care.
Would they have paid more than a frigging third?
Perhaps, but we're not getting that.
Oh, boy.
Oh, boy.
Do you need Kop and Comfort to score when you got to bring
Kat and Raymond on that second line?
So here's what I'd say.
Teams that have made the playoffs recently or last year
have a better idea of what they're missing.
This playoff run is an opportunity for Detroit to figure that out.
And to be fair, I think Montreal looked at the deadline today.
They're not going to feature much in this broadcast
because they didn't do much.
I think that was the smart play from them.
Again, because they made their deal with Deneau.
They got a centerman.
I don't think he's...
And they want Oliver Kapanen to keep developing,
and I get that too.
And I mean, Dobson's a swing and a half.
Yeah, and that was a monster pay that they had to make.
I feel like Montreal will probably take a step forward.
I think they'll go beyond five games this postseason.
Detroit needs to kind of do that same thing,
have that postseason just go,
oh, what do we look like when we're playing a contender every night?
The East has basically jumped ball, man.
It is.
It's real fun.
It definitely is.
Now, there's a few other things we need to get to,
and I know we want to go Leafs.
So, listen, if you've got friends that are tuning in
and they want to hear Steve and Jesse and I talk about the Leafs,
probably specifically Steve,
know that we're going to get to that in the next 15 minutes, okay?
That's what I need you to know.
All right?
Why not now?
Why not?
Because there's another team that I want to talk about.
But first, I want to talk about how difficult it is sometimes to get your meals planned.
Right?
Let's talk about how...
Here.
Yeah.
Of all the people that came in today, who meal prepped?
Not me.
I was just saying.
This guy.
This guy meal prepped.
Yeah.
And Tempo makes it easy.
That's why I use Tempo.
and that's why you should use tempo because listen sometimes you have a kid and you put on a few
pounds you want to lose those few pounds or you're trying to bulk up big whatever it is there are 20
new recipes every week including nutrient-rich ingredients tempo keeps things exciting and helps
you stay consistent with healthy habits even busy athletes like maria sharapova swear by tempo for
their balanced meals to help them stay on top of their wellness goals maybe you know if you have
ulcer or something maybe it would help you with that i don't know not only maria sharapova
drew don't you have a buddy who's like really into tempo yeah my brother-in-law swears by it
it's like all he eats yeah i think drew's brother-in-law forget maria sharapova put that
in the ad that's right maria doesn't have to put up with drew all the time yeah that's the real
hero that's a struggle and you got you can't do that on an empty stomach no and that's the thing
like these meals are ready in two minutes that's the key it's like oh just throw it in the microwave
we're ready to go and we want to give you a deal to get started off so for a limited time tempo is
offering steve dangle podcast listeners 60 off your first box just to give it a try go to tempo
meals.com slash sdp again that's tempo meals.com slash sdp for 60 off your first box tempo meals.com
slash sdp rules and restrictions apply another team that made a bunch of moves today that i
think deserves at least flowers for being bold are the minnesota wilds and the one thing that
we thought they were going to do in this week uh is get a legitimate top six center they didn't
They did make one, two, three, four, five, six trades from March 1st to March 6th.
But none of those players are the top six forward.
So we'll get to that in a second.
Let me tell you some of the notable moves from today.
They offloaded Vinny Henestrosa to the Panthers for future considerations.
Took on Nick Foligno so he can play with his brother Marcus Foligno.
The Wild also acquired Bobby Brink from the Philadelphia Flyers.
Having a great season for them.
uh david your check went the other way uh they acquired jeff petrie from the panthers for a
conditional seventh because that's bill zito saying jeff you signed here hoping to go after
a stanley cup we're not going for one but the minnesota wild are so he can play in that condition
i believe is they get to the second round and he plays 50 of the games uh michael mccarron which i
did a in-depth video on uh for a second round pick and they also uh traded away boris kachuk
for Roman Schmidt earlier this week,
but that's sort of like a whatever.
They didn't get the center.
Or Skuchuk, who they just got from Tampa.
Yeah.
Or Michael something.
Yeah.
Michael something.
You know, that's how important it was.
You remember the person they traded him for.
What kind of name is that?
Norwegian?
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
They didn't get the center.
They augmented the wings.
But you've got Erickson Eck,
I almost said Eckman Larson.
You've got Hartman.
You've got Danilo Urof.
Uh-huh.
And you've got McCarron and Sturm, who I think are all your face-off guys.
Foligno can take some face-off.
Yeah, okay.
Maybe not play center.
Used to.
Listen, it's very likely the Dallas Stars are going to play the Minnesota Wild in the first round.
And I'm not picking favorites there, but I need the Wild to play the Avalanche for science.
Because they're so strong on the wings?
The Avalanche are essentially just centers.
Yeah, that's true.
And the Wild are anything but.
Drew's getting his broom out, by the way.
He's saying it.
Yeah, he's getting his broom out.
It's looking like they'll play the stars who have hints, Duchesne.
You know, there's some pretty good players there.
Yeah, but it ain't that.
It ain't McKinnon, Nelson, Kadri, and then one of Drury or friggin' Waugh.
That's ridiculous.
But this is the Minnesota Wild portion.
That's right.
Yeah, sorry.
the wild I mean it seems like okay we're talking about like where's the offense going to come from
or uh uh it's coming from the back end that's one of the most wild back ends in the entire NHL
Hughes Faber is one of the most OP pairings in the entire NHL if not the most Brodine Spurgeon
is probably pretty underrated Middleton Bogosian you could do worse for a third pair Gustafson
walstead's one of the best tandems going i think they have the best tandem of the three top central
teams yeah like boldy's a killer erickson eck is again on all underrated uh kaprizov is a killer
and then everyone else you might not look at and be overly threatened by them offensively but they
are going to beat your ass like bad i like that's a long night i just look at that roster and i think
god that's exhausting now you could sweep them and be exhausted trennan was a uh an av years ago
he is now a minnesota wild um bobby brink's tough um yeah i yeah you're right like they are
i think that's what it's going to have to be if you're going to get through dallas and that seems
to be their most likely um opponent you're going to have to make life hell bobby hi welcome to
minnesota do you know russian because he's on a line with your oven trennan uh i think they keep
the russian line together you do yeah okay so yeah mccarran is six foot seven and scary jesse
what do you see when you look at the roster do you like do you pick them over dallas and then
pick them over colorado no i have them third of three and i don't think the moves that they've
made in the last little bit have moved them up at all in that division unfortunately the part that
you started off with is their weakest link and they did not try and solve that and like that's
I would have compiled the assets that they've used.
Like they've used a lot to get Quinn Hughes.
Sure.
Obviously, like that's where everything went.
But you should have done something else to get the center that's not McCarron.
You know, if you could have gone out and whatever name it is,
even if it's Trochek, I feel like that's an upgrade over what you have.
I'm never going to side with the team
that's going to throw out Ryan Hartman as their first line center.
i just when i'm when i'm competing with dallas who's like stacked up and down the lineup
maybe just a little light on d and then we all know what the abs are like i'm not gonna pick
this team over those other two even though like i do like what garen is doing he's very bold in
his decision making he's he's always willing to try and improve his team and do the wild things
to make his team better it's just i would have gone in a different direction and the direction
would have been right down the middle okay let me ask you this we're gonna play a little quiz
all right and this is for everybody if you're watching this okay i want you to play along
central division okay abs wild stars okay who's got the best overall forward group
oh my god abs wild stars uh and i'll give you a top six from dallas sure robertson hints
wyatt johnson sam steel matt duchene jamie benn
i mean it's the abs but that's really good uh the avalanche have obviously um niches
landis cog mckinnon that's you know pretty great it's good followed up by colton nelson
natushkin and we obviously know that you know juan cadre are in there too and playoff natushkin
which matters right right it's not just natushkin that's not just that's that's big val we're we're
talking about leckanen's also their second line left wing when he's healthy which right which
he's not come on and then you've got kaprizov hartman zuccarello taraseko erickson eck boldy
again those are two killers all right you got one of the best right wings one of the best left
wings in the nhl who's playing center so then who's got the best decor of those three all right
hughes favor broding spurgeon middleton bogosian those are the wild stupid okay that's crazy
taze mccarr manson burns kulak malinsky malinsky's been unbelievable this pretty gosh darn good
essa lindell mera heiskanen uh harley nils lundquist leon bichelle and ilia labushkin
Oh, well, based on Leon Bichelle alone, I think that's Drew's favorite player.
Right, Drew?
Boy.
Oh, boy.
I might go, and I'm going to say this in front of Drew, too.
I'm going to go Minnesota, Colorado, Dallas,
but the margins between the three are nothing.
Tight.
Jesse?
Nothing.
What would you say?
I don't disagree with that ranking at all.
Yeah?
Yeah, yeah.
All right.
It's tight.
It's tight.
Goal 10, you guys already know that I think Minnesota's got the best two goaltenders.
I think the Stars have the best one goaltender.
So Ottinger.
Yeah.
Colorado's got the best Wood.
They got both Woods, McKenzie and Scott, Black and Wedge.
So who would you put as the...
So you say Dallas is the best overall goalie.
And did you say the Stars line up without Rantanen there?
I did.
Sorry, yes, I did.
Yeah, I did say that.
Rantanen is in their top six, plus wherever Bunting slots in.
so it's a little different that's a big ad forget renting yeah and sagan's out for the entirety of
the season yeah the playoffs which sucks for them because their lineup looks different but
yeah don't forget ranting in there yeah sorry can you say the stars top six again but add ranting
okay so i'll take sam steel out of it yes please robertson hints johnson uh uh ranting and dushane
ben and and play off jamie ben play off jamie ben now off ranting and yeah shucks yeah sheesh
of pebbles it's a lot right that's gonna be a tough that those will be cannot miss games
all of them tie break might have to go to the team that won last time high five drew okay
do you think they go bunting dushane ranting in second line
i was holding out hope cadre would go there just to have cadre and bunting play together
just what a bunch of bastards um hmm bunting is really low-key a pretty smart little pickup for
them i think a third yeah that's a third cost of nothing for a guy who is he's a remarkably
consistent scorer yeah not necessarily so much in the playoffs uh but he hasn't played in the
playoffs since 22 23 his last season with the leafs when he got suspended um i middle six
you can play second line or third line okay okay fourth line you're starting to waste everyone's
time but i would say second line or third line um now steve before we get to the truck
what we're not there yet what no no we're getting there now okay but i said before we get there i
thought steve should click send out the link one more time on twitter to say hey everybody come on
in steve has thoughts on the toronto maple leafs and we do too and we have 40 minutes left we have
40 minutes left it's better we all steve loves brad for living i'll i'll say this as we are
waiting for the segment to start brad did speak to the media oh give me these and i'll give you
some quotes here um because this happened like while we were recording right or like just before
it did the major quote that seems to be making the round jesse uh did you you tweeted it out
yes major quote that seems to be making the rounds by the way share this video with your
friends if they're angry leaf fans i haven't seen any of the quotes do it right now bring them in
bring them in bring them in bring those leaf fans in all right everyone gather around gather around
you're gonna love the way this starts it's canada you're gonna love yeah you're gonna love the way
this starts okay today isn't the ops autopsy day today isn't the autopsy day because he still has
a job so there's a second half to this quote but i just want to how's that land today isn't the
autopsy day you know what dead bodies don't usually do play over a dozen more games
i think that's what i think that back back to brad's point actually no no i have a different
takeaway um that's that a dead body is about to play more than 12 games um they suck they stink
they're unwatchable today was so disappointing and now i still gotta watch them this is as
disappointed as i've been as a leafs fan in the organization as a whole in a very long time
i'll take the responsibility for our season i don't look at today as autopsy day we've got 19
games to go can you believe it's that many oh my goodness but i think there's a whole
there's a whole host of reasons we are where we are and i think are you the host um i think the
leafs will probably you know they would echo what keith pelly wrote to season ticket holders
oh we had a number of key injuries thanks for the money jerka oh that's schedule okay sorry
yeah compressed schedule but they were the only one with the compressed schedule
yes actually toronto's the only one who didn't benefit from the olympic break yeah leafs had to
play a hundred games everyone else 82 so it's crazy they still have as few points as they do
it's um he was asked will the leafs be a playoff team next year
true living said we're going to get to that once we get through this year today's not the day for
that there's a change that has to occur there's changes that we need to make and that's not for
today so the leafs can't commit to being a playoff team next year well listen even if they had said
that i would have been like okay well good luck with that yeah um i i said what i said earlier
and if you didn't see it i forgive you there's a lot of content uh congrats on hockey content
christmas everyone i'd fire him today uh today we got off to a poor start this season oh i look
from my standpoint is it currently the start there are some roster construction issues okay
damn that's crazy you know that those that those roster issues were the same issues that they had
coming into the season and were in october and november and december and january and february
the roster hasn't changed because he didn't make a deal or an acquisition in that entire time
and i refuse i refuse as much as i am like yeah no fire him literally this moment um with brad
living it all goes back to letting a lame duck president decide we're not trading anyone from
the core four were satisfied to just go down with the ship and then when the ship went down they
were like well no one could have predicted this this is keith pelly this is keith pelly
it's gradual living but it's keith pelly and it's shanahan too that's it's all a big long
i always say the problem with history yeah but shanahan is keith pelly for the purpose of this
exercise sure he's the one who made that decision okay right so so that's you know shannon we can't
fire him is is what i'm getting at right um but yeah no brad i don't think can be jamming the
seam anymore according to nick barden uh and this is where i'm getting all the quotes from thank you
nick uh he said despite shout out the bard card uh bard said despite sitting out two games for
roster management purposes the maple leafs never traded oliver eckman larson that's so embarrassing
True Living said, with term left on his contract, we required a return we thought would be fair
and nobody met that level.
Now, the Leafs walked away from today.
You sat him because you had no idea what you were doing.
You sit guys who are on the verge of being traded.
You sat him because you have no idea what you're doing.
You obviously didn't have a suitor that was close.
You don't know what you're doing.
The prices were high.
I wouldn't want Ryan Suter.
ryan suiter a suger that was close oh what about puce what about puce puce i'd consider it
now i'm surprised it took you a second easton cowan and jacob quillen were sent to the marlies
as a paper transaction so they'll be eligible for the caldera cup playoffs so that means
oh easton cowan will go down to the marlies once this leaf season how bummed i think craig
is going to be when uh when he realizes it was only a paper transaction i don't know if the
Marlies are going to make the playoffs, are they? I don't even know what
the record is. I'm not sure. You know what? Don't worry about
it. Hey, hey. So this is so that he's
eligible for the AHL playoff? Yeah.
Conversation for a different day, Steve. Who cares?
No, I can walk and chew gum.
Trilliving did say he anticipates
they'll use more Marlies players throughout the
remainder of the season, too. Now, I want to
before we get to who they traded and
what they got back, I think it's important to know that
James Myrtle, friend of the show,
longtime friend of the show. Not my friggin
friend. Did a hit with
J.D. Bunkus this morning.
And he said, the chances of Berube coming back are nil.
And it's entirely possible that Berube just gets hired out of this contract
by another team because he's the guy that is in demand.
And they have Derek Lalonde there if they decide to just not have Craig
do the last few games.
Although the lack of decision-making with this franchise, who knows?
and I found it interesting that they said,
we anticipate we're going to use more Marlies
throughout the remainder of the season too.
James alluded to the fact, and it's clear.
This is clear.
It's very clear.
What management wants
and what the coach will do are two different things.
Why do you have Easton Cowling playing fourth line minutes?
Why do you never move Scott Lawton up the lineup
who is now traded?
Why do you have-
For crazy value.
Why do you have Callie Yarncroke switching in
for a guy that is going to be part of the big future here.
Well, to bump his trade value so that you don't trade him.
This is a team.
I'm so, so disappointed.
This is a team that management and coaches are not getting along.
Brube will be gone, like we said.
They want to look at Quillen.
They want a more.
Every time Quillen's called up, he plays like five minutes.
Management wants to know what they have with this guy.
another guy that i think we've been talking about a lot that moves a puck and they could use back
there is this is crazy will villeneuve who's having a great year with the marlies completely
psychotic we're still having this conversation luke hames has had eight goals in his last 10
games you might want to have a look at him at the nhl level for a couple of games bo grew is your
leading scorer 50 points in 53 games 27 goals actually scores on the power buy he has 27 goals
the next closest guy is 18 berube is famous for not using marley's look at alex steves and the
success he's had in boston this year and so berube for me we don't need to have that conversation
he was fired when ottawa came into toronto and limited the leafs to i think the shots were 16
to 2 and they almost went 20 minutes without a shot you're done i don't he could coach the last
19 games i hope he doesn't because i want them to have a look at things berube's done that's off the
table let's not talk about that let's not waste our time but what is clear to me yesterday the
prices were sky high nick waugh we were able to get a first and i think a conditional fifth out
of colorado yes for nick waugh because the cadre deal the original one fell through so you got
lucky there and then we waited and we waited and we waited and the leafs waited yeah well we didn't
I waited for the Leafs to stop waiting.
I was waiting, Jesse.
I didn't make any transactions.
Bobby McMahon told James Duthie this afternoon
that he got a call from his agent after the deadline
telling him he'd been traded.
What happened here, and I'm going to show you.
Bobby McMahon was traded for a second and a fourth.
Michael McCarron was traded for a second.
Bobby McMahon is a second and a fourth.
Scott Lawton is a third.
Let me tell you something, guys.
the leafs held on and they held on and the market fell away and who they telegraphed that had they
done that for weeks had they done this yesterday had they done it yesterday they were bob they
were oh we need to get we need to get a first for bobby mcmahon we need to get a first for bobby
mcmahon and then with an hour to go they said and and tsn reported this okay well we won't do a first
now we can do a second they should have moved scott lawton and mcmahon in january yes february
mid-feb we can't do mid-feb before the olympic break anytime before that like you're getting a
first for scott lawton sometimes they waited and waited because they were convinced that this team
was better than they are and there was so much evidence that this team is bad they turned they
turned and i'm sorry to say to interrupt you i think this is important if we're going to ratchet
Steve up. They turned
Nikita Grabankin and next
year's first round pick into a third round pick.
And a
couple of fourths if you want to split here. And a couple of fourths.
No, no, no. Well, there's no fourths in the Lawton deal.
The original one.
Oh, in the original one. They got draft picks
from Philly in the Lawton deal. Okay, fair
enough.
They did not trade OEL.
They also did not trade Yarncroke. They also
did not trade Stetcher. They also
did not trade Nick Robertson, who has had
trade request and kevin weeks alluded to doesn't want to be here benoit carlo you're telling me
you couldn't have got a similar package to the falk deal for oel who makes less yeah he's older
not by much he has more term not by much and again he makes less you're telling me that package
wasn't there oh my god riley carlo mccabe stetcher benoit eckman larson their decors untouched
question mark
fired i would go to the ford performance center by the way michelle is still there too
oh and domi's at least michelle he's an rfa and you know domi's back at center
oh that's great with one that's good i can't wait to spend two and a half hours watching that
that's so good oh frig that's so good i'm so stoked about that thank you thank you may i have
another um i would go to the ford performance center and i would deadbolt the office i'd weld
it shut i would whatever they did at the beginning of the first mummy movie to make sure he doesn't
get out i've never seen the mummy are you serious no i don't i think you're the only person in the
world who stars in that uh rachel weiss and brennan frazier and brennan frazier when did it come out
uh when we were time ago yeah probably 25 30 years ago now and don't look at me like i'm old
you were prime watching the mummy age when that movie came out you were you were i don't know
how dare you i had such a huge crush on rachel weiss too who the frig didn't yeah her natalie
portman my mood has been lifted just by thinking of her yes she's married to james bond oh my god
is she daniel which one or not daniel rachel james bond in your right daniel craig they've
been married for like 15 years now that'd be a great movie yeah that'd be a great movie am i
married to who the hell are you creaky friday james bond and harry potter switch lives i'd
rather talk about this than the job the leafs did where were we they have they walked away from the
deadline with a first yeah when they drop all those massive blocks and they shut the pyramid
in yeah yeah and they seal it with a bunch of spells and stuff yeah that's that is what i would
do with the four performance center i think it's inexcusable to still have yarn croak and stetcher
on in your lineup in your system those are ufas that anything is better than nothing a conditional
seventh wasn't available a conditional bag a conditional seventh give them away thank you
for mentioning jeff petrie and like lucas reichel and david camp who didn't even play a full friggin
season and then you got nothing for some of the guys lucas reichel the captain of a team lucas
reichel and um and david kampf both both guys got sixth round picks david kampf who they just
let go for nothing because the contract was too much apparently and now he got an asset for
vancouver now they would have never gotten that for kampf because kampf was done with kampf would
have been useful to this team when they had no centers playing and they messed up whatever
relationship they had with him by just making him go to the marlies no matter what when he could
have been useful in the end and they could have literally he could have made the opening day
lineup because if they had waited a week and cow would have been fine he would have been on the
team no problem they didn't make decisions they didn't need to they well cow and made the team
okay well then then send cowan down for a little bit and somebody's going to get injured and he'll
come up hey kid uh sorry them's the breaks check still arrives on time see you soon holy the list
of mistakes that the leafs have made in the last calendar year is so lengthy i find it interesting
that brad for living three separate times this year is it two has come out publicly and said i
support craig berube because i don't think craig berube supports brad no and you know we've been
yearning uh hilariously for the kyle dubas days uh over the past little bit some people are still
very stubbornly steadfast against it and listen he made mistakes he certainly did um i haven't
been yearning for the kyle dubas days well i think kyle dubas has some real strength here's what i
yearn for from the kyle dubas days when the coach and gm were aligned i'm sure they didn't agree on
everything but you had babcock actively working against kyle dubas like a spoiled brat
then he gets fired sheldon keith comes on
and they start actually agreeing on things and they were on the same page
brad comes in with keith and for some reason there's this year-long death march they had that
crazy like 25 hour meeting or whatever it was and then they don't win in the playoffs and you fire
them anyway like we all knew you were going to and then craig berube and uh brad for living got
along for a season optimistically half of each of their tenures that's miserable
five assistant general managers brad treliving as the general manager and shane doan as the
assistant to the general manager that is a seven person team in the front office
not including everyone who works for them what on god's green earth do you mean you ran out of time
none of you show up to work tomorrow well the brandon carlo thing i want to talk about because
last year and this is the rumor and this is the story is the leafs were and steve's gonna hit the
roof in a second trying to get rasmus anderson and the the story goes unconfirmed that as if
the flames were ever going to do business with the leafs at the last at the last second we've
been saying that for over a year and they never at the last second they had to pivot to brandon
harlow right before the trade deadline hit and the reason it was only a top five protected pick
is because brad knew that he couldn't get through a deadline without making a right-handed shot
defenseman a toronto maple leaf right needed to get one and they were willing to move mitten and
they were willing to move the first but boston said and rightfully so yeah we're not taking any
protection on that beyond five picks boston said lmao all the way to and had the leafs included a
third in that pick they could have got marshan too could have saved the trade but instead that
conditional third which upgraded to a second went to florida marshan went to florida with that they
might literally be stanley cup champions those trades were made at essentially the same time
um boy you know one thing we've never had to do is talk about the leafs on their way down
yeah we haven't they were just down they were in the basement they were where they are now
yeah which is not the basement which is the basement is actually better yeah the basement
is far better we're just on the stairs sort of looking into the basement yeah and then you have
to tumble down them a little bit peter griffin style and um they're still on the way down how
do you feel like you are handling this still getting used to it it's only sent me to the er
once um that's a wild thing to say it is a wild thing to say also don't overdo anti-inflammatories
kids um i'm getting real tired about being right with listen ducks wrong red wings wrong
i've been wrong about a bunch of teams i'm gonna need you to point to when i've been wrong about
for years and years and years we telegraphed on the show so extensively every single issue
they were not just we're encountering we're going to encounter the the marner
nylander choice you got to do something here you can't keep going with the core four
they locked themselves into that fate guys you're not a playoff team you got to get your work done
you got to get your work done early hurry up hurry up they left it to the last minute and they're
left pissing into the wind getting pennies on the dollar for mcmahon and pennies on the dollar for
lotten having a condition on the trade if we make the playoffs it becomes a second when they're not
even in the playoffs and it won't even be a second this year i'm pretty sure you have to wonder too
the the first rounder that edmonton sent to chicago i think oilers fans and i think
leafs fans would be much happier you missed the boat if if the leafs hadn't missed the
boat there and i think you completely missed the boat that's where the market fell out
that's where the market fell out and think like think of the conditional pick you could
have potentially got from edmonton based on like playoff performance or something and then you're
not making a playoff based uh uh bonus deal with the kings who are not even in a playoff spot
we said don't wait stop waiting what was the illusion
what was the illusion you were going to get in and you were going to play the role of the 2021
montreal canadians who's carrie price who's shea weber who's shea weber who's phil dono who's phil
the no oh the fans they're they're just so loud and crazy you'd go crazy too if you saw obvious
problems right in front of your face and no one was doing anything about it and now here we are
today in one of the worst positions in the entire 32 team national hockey league sorry if i'm not in
a good mood about it and darren drager saying yesterday on overdrive that uh toronto's gonna
have a hard time uh attracting players which by the way oh did darren said that i did darren
drager say that he did say did he say that let's go thanks for all your help in 2019 there bud
he loves this place well he loves his team i checked in with some always helpful and there
were there was significant pushback within the league on that comment so all hope is not lost
that's one person's opinion i worry about whose opinion that is though and i think that's an
important one now does the dude who's tight with darren ferris have that opinion yeah
i don't i wasn't suggesting that i have no idea where that i'm that's just nakedly true like i'm
not even calling a guy out would someone like to counter the authenticity of what i just said
well i'm just i'm so sick of like for years like uh
it's it's just we're the scientists everyone ignores in every disaster movie it's all right
mr scientist is jurassic park you're saying dinosaurs are gonna come alive and eat you
we are jeff goldblum yeah we're for we're whoever it was in the day after tomorrow
where have you ever seen the movie don't look up yeah that's a great movie that's
that's closer to reality that's what i'm leo dicaprio going
into the into the microphone dead into the camera do something there's an asteroid
and then the president of your favorite hockey team calls the asteroid and says we're not moving
you and now we're here thanks guys thanks all involved before the deadline we set the over
under at three and a half moves they made three moves that leaves me disappointed you could spell
out everything they should do and once again they've decided not to do them and and brad talked
about this not being autopsy day like you you might go well look at the nick wah trade there's
saving grace that pick isn't until next freaking year and unless you find unless somehow you find
a way for someone to give you a 2026 first for your 2027 first which they're probably not going
or if you just move that for an asset like a player or move that for an asset well i'd love
to know i do want you to know as a leaf fan if you're watching this the leafs do not have a pick
in the first two rounds of this draft i think it's better that they do give that pick to boston
this season i think i'm an outlier on monksley fans who kind of want to try and get the top
first overall pick or a top five pick but if they don't i am perfectly fine with giving that pick
to boston like you don't want to get into a situation where they're bad again next year
And there's potentially in just unprotected pick going to Philly or Boston.
You don't want to get into that situation.
I'm sorry.
This could be a long term thing.
That's the little sidebar about this whole thing that nobody kind of wants to touch.
Some people want to touch it because they hate us Leafs fans.
But the Leafs could be in trouble here for a number of years.
I'm hopeful and I think there's an avenue to do a quick retool here.
But if things are truly as south as they could be potentially,
if the rest of the lineup can't turn into something
and they can't flip the assets and the GM stays here,
they could miss the playoffs again next year.
And then you're talking about the Matthews thing
where he doesn't want to stick around because he's not into losing.
Oh, they love talking about that.
Listen, today's not this year's autopsy.
I don't know why you're doing next year's autopsy also.
why worry about something that's not going to happen it's also kind of comparable to chernobyl
and remember that yes yeah the leafs don't want to talk about that because they won't ever and
they don't even want to talk about today and the end of the season but that is very close to reality
and it's not too distant of the future and not an easy path back with not a lot of assets to get the
team back to where it needs to be right I know Chris Tanev's missed most of the year guy's gonna
be 37 next year how much are you putting on him OEL has had a great year he's 35 that's why it
was extra embarrassing that Keith Pelley puts down Chris Tanev is like one of the reasons that this
team is bad and oh if we didn't have injuries and Tanev was in the lineup we might be good
that can't be your saving grace that is an old man who is almost who's one injury away from
never playing hockey again and might have
already had that injury that
can prevent him from never playing hockey again
Victor Hedman, Braden Point, Anthony
Sorelli, Nick Paul
like just go down the laundry list
and look at Tampa just running over
everybody
they're not here
to sell jerseys they're here
to sell fantasy
they're here to sell a team
that isn't
and I'm
done with the fantasy
adam made me laugh myself into tears and a headache by saying they don't have a first or
second this year you do that yeah i don't know why that was a surprise to you it's not that it
was a surprise it's that i hadn't heard it said out loud in plain english how the shit
in a deadline where you're selling do you not have a first or a second heading into this year's draft
well they do it's just there's conditions on it and and well brad was asked about the
lackluster return for lawton and he said well the market dictates and i think part of that problem
part of the problem is that okay let's take him at his word the rest of the league were not
interested in leaf players i'll tell oh fine i will believe that sentiment for a second
but let me ask you this why could it be because you should have fired your coach in december
is it because your coach has been playing a system that does not work for this group would
not try anything new you know what the oilers did when they had a coach who was successful the year
before won a division with and he started he had a bad 20 games with them and he tried to implement
a new defensive system and mcdavid and dry saddle weren't scoring and they were getting outscored
eight to one to start the season you know what they did they fired him they fired him
they fired him the Leafs did not the Leafs fired their power play coach who led to a minor bump
and that is it they were good for like a week and a half and did a victory lap about it
it's unbelievable to me and I said this in our videos and I think this is something that Leafs
nation the ones of you that are here need to hear brad for living has a reputation of being somebody
who has a hard time making a decision i have heard it time and time and time again we're told that
the day he signed here and unbelievable how true from from the the sources that i talked to
everybody everybody inside outside everybody who knows somebody who's dealt with says it's hard to
get a definitive answer out of brad about anything and i think he doesn't even have answers about his
answer if i am to take him at his word that the market was not there for a scott lawton or a bobby
mcmahon or whatever first off then you misread the market yeah number two the reason it's not
is because especially scott lawton's numbers don't look great if you haven't watched him he's played
awesome i love scott lotten and i wish him all the best he's played awesome the reason his numbers
look like shit is because you got a head coach who's literally drumming the life out of this
team you guys saw yesterday berube screaming at the players max domi turned his back turned his
back on none of them were even listening that was embarrassing everybody involved this is so over
this is so over berube plays a terrible system of hockey that doesn't suit his players and his
solution to that is by continuing to play that system of hockey and the gm can't make moves to
improve the roster because he's afraid of making moves in either direction and now we just have a
i didn't want to swear but cluster of just bad management on every level of this organization
Keith Pelley fired a bunch of presidents that ran these different teams that were at least people who understood the sport and the money in business side so that they could be a medium point in between the president and the overseer and the board.
And he got rid of those people because Rogers loves cuts.
And then now they've been left with a GM who's out of his depth and a head coach who nobody can get rid of.
and a ceo disaster jesse and a ceo that you can't convince me is prepared for this no a ceo doesn't
know what he's doing and has too much responsibility and got rid of people that could have really
helped him with the responsibilities now that he now has and if he wanted to get rid of them
he didn't replace them exactly who like that he got rid of the positions who on earth is equipped
to run six sports teams nobody at one he's the president of all of them the arrogance the hubris
from the people who signed the checks down to the guy who took the job mostly the people who
signed the checks because listen the check is a check i'll take the check if shitty job try it
shitty job good job i get the check either way right the the idea that that came across their
desk as an idea hey what if we had one guy run six teams the fact that that got passed what if
we tried this and wasn't laughed out of the room is so deeply concerning well i'll tell you something
uh it went largely under the radar but uh the tf tfc grabbed a pretty massive star uh out of the
epl uh who's coming back here um and wasn't he under the second league oh he's in the second
league yeah he had played in the epl but the the team had been demoted he wants to get back on the
u.s uh national team's last name sergeant and at the press conference josh cloak from the athletic
was there and asked Keith who was at the press conference questions about this and Keith said
this ain't the day to talk about the Leafs and I get that when is it I get that but the fact that
Keith Pelley is there that's that's I'm so glad that you got to there because it's Keith Pelley
should not be at these press conferences you are the business manager somebody he employed to run
the team to be at these press conferences Jesse you know who was the general manager this is the
thing if brad wants to make a trade the only person he's got to get approval from is keith
here pull it up what pull what up pull up uh the the keith pelly press conference from today it's
the trade deadline pull it up yeah pull it up he was happy to be there when they were bringing
somebody in yeah grossly every who's doing a good job name one guy name the ceo name an executive
name a coach name a player sam kim who is playing to the best of their ability sam kim and jordan
bean that's a damn good answer they are oh yeah damn good answer oh we always had a good and
oliver eckman larson yeah he's having a good season and that's about it and steve you know
what all steve sullivan has done is stood there on the bench in his nice suit and glasses power
look nice under steve sullivan all right let's go with these okay list of the sinless
oliver ekman larson steve sullivan sam kim jordan bean i'll say derrick lillon
carl pk looks good derrick lillon tk looks real good does carlton make the list carlton carlton
blameless oh dennis hildeby dennis hildeby there is something yeah okay well then to that i'll add
jacob quillen yes and uh let's go hayley wickenheiser because she's a doctor that's fair
the only executive joe bowen in his last season
all right let me give you this stay safe gorgeous she living said
oh four and two on this oh four and two skid remember the they have not won since the western
road trip before the olympics uh-huh he said we came out flat and it's so long ago i know
bro steve or steve jesse calendar month holy shit hey it's march 6th the last one was on
march 5th or february 5th it's been a calendar month since we've seen the leafs win a game win
a game geez now there hasn't been a calendar month worth of play but you know what i'm saying
it's still a long time sorry i was just puttering around on the ahl website real quick before you
keep going adam the three of the top five teams in the ahl belong to atlantic division teams
excellent this is gonna get so much worse before it gets better true living on the leafs oh four
and two skid coming out of the olympic break we came out of the break flat and it's important
for us to find out why i can't give you a good reason it's not anything we anticipated we're
pros we're in the best league in the world it's a privilege to play in this league and here's the
highlight we've got to compete as such and you know watching that rangers game last night that
the leafs fell to pieces after the third rangers goal and you know i know what this looks like
that's not falling to pieces because you're mentally fragile that's falling to pieces
because you know what fuck this yeah like you um you're in the talent evaluation business
and you flunked beginning middle end it's the nhl it's hard it's like yeah yeah i get it
you didn't pull the rug.
You didn't pull the chute.
They pulled the rug.
Oh, they pulled the rug.
You didn't pull the chute when you should have.
And then you got your show run at the trade deadline.
You made one deal ahead of the trade deadline
and it's the one you did the best in.
Should we take any lessons from that?
Are we noticing?
Are we making observations?
Holy shit, guys.
fans can hold your hands through this this is it's abysmal uh yeah it's i'm not interested in
anyone coming back for what for what reason so with that and i think you're right and you would
be right to not invest any of your time watching the toronto people he's the rest of the way but
we will be watching oh you should definitely still tune into lfr and the sdp uh yeah absolutely
we'll just tell you how it went uh jesse can we do the press conference yeah let me hit the button
you know what my lfrs aren't two and a half hours
the steve dangle press conference
a waker degree with the super chat says can we quickly get a tier list slash rating of where
the current post-deadline leafs rank amongst the least teams of last 15 ish years i genuinely think
this might be the worst if you got to give a a ranking of where this team ranks in the last 15
years where do you think it's gonna you're not horacek bad yet no but you could be i think this
team's gonna sink like a rock horacek era leafs at least sold yeah and they picked fourth they
had their own first yeah yeah yeah fair fair um like 13 14 they fell off a cliff they had their
own first but there's 10 years of teams that are ahead of them yeah so that that's already they're
in the top five they're bottom five excuse me yeah bottom five they're bottom two and they
ain't two i would say they're they're the the team they're up there with the team which i think is
the worst leafs team which is the team after they made the playoffs in that half season at the
lockout i think it was 11 12 was the lockout 13 14 or sorry 12 13 was the lockout 12 13 was like
so 13 14 was our first full season that i think was the worst maple leafs game team we've ever
seen um and not because they weren't more talented they fell off a cliff just like they'd done uh
several years before and that's when it really started unravel randy carlisle phil kessel
dion for enough it's like oh we've signed kessel this long contract for enough to this uh for
definitely not worth it kessel might not be worth it probably isn't um we're in deep shit and i think
that's that feeling that's how i feel right now like a lot of the brian burke era leafs um
that those those were bad teams but he would do things that that would remind you someone's home
yeah someone's awake um and true living waited over 225 days or whatever it was between trades
yeah on a team that was bad almost the whole time
i think this is bottom bottom worst okay jesse and next up tim hicks 5588 writes with a super
chat hi tim hey guys big fan i'm from buffalo the city is electric about the sabers and i'm 24
and they haven't been in the playoffs since i was nine so excited for buffalo be backing their team
in the playoffs come spring keep up the great work hey that's awesome say a nice thing about
buffalo steven adam oh man well we did in the video today yeah i've been singing the praises of
of tampa as a wagon so buffalo's tied with tampa right now tampa has two games in hand but here's
here's the real takeaway buffalo's won five straight tampa's lost four straight and whack
they are tied together uh they're an exciting team they're where hockey is going they're easy
to root for yeah this is for a team that i hated viscerally growing up because they would always
beat mine and they would always beat mine in the worst slog of a way yeah they weren't a fun team
to play against ever if you managed to score two goals against dominic hasik and you didn't win
that game 2-1 you weren't winning it you you weren't winning it it was a horrible watch and
that's why i hated those damn hockey teams this uh iteration of the sabers i i think you're a
freaking jerk if you cheer against them yeah like dude they haven't been in the playoffs in forever
like this is almost like on on par with like the hamburglar sends we're like i hate you but gosh
darn it i respect you yeah i'm i'll just say this and i said it in the camera i'll say it again
i am very excited for the buffalo sabers playoff run no matter how long it lasts
i think it's going to be super fun as i keep saying they were acquired almost 13 feet of
defenseman uh today they're big they're scary they're fun they're electric and they sometimes
play a little shoddy defense too which makes them even more exciting you're three for three
nicholas says a flyers fan in toronto bought a leafs lawton jersey from the real sports store
when he was traded here the nameplate peeled half off with one where even though it was 250
dollars the toronto maple leafs organization hates their fans thank you for the super chat nicholas
oh i had a chat yesterday with a season ticket holder who just gave up their season tickets
and is just having a hell of a time
getting their money back out.
Wow.
Like emails and calls and whatever,
they make it really hard.
They're not, I'll tell you, man,
season ticket holders are furious with this team.
They're furious with this team.
They do not treat their season ticket holders well.
I know it's a business thing.
Just throwing that out there.
Ref Boyardee wants to know,
Steve, you say you want Berube fired today
and I get why.
But why do the Leafs and the Corps specifically
deserve to get the new coach bump they wanted all year after all this?
Why not fire him after the season ends?
There's definitely an argument for that.
There's an argument for that.
The argument that I'm not interested in is,
well, I'm not giving these players another coach.
They've had fewer coaches than Connor McDavid.
That's an objective truth.
Look it up.
It's only by one, but it's still true.
Connor McDavid has had more coaches in the NHL
than William Nylander and Austin Matthews.
And saw almost no success until this recent one.
Yes.
Last one.
We'll call it a show.
Yeah, sure.
Chez, you can continue on your hate train.
No, that's all right.
You can continue on your hate train with this question.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
It's not all right.
You need to get ramped up again.
Has there ever been a hockey GM
that has screwed over more Canadian fans than Brad?
He has been a major part of duking two Canadian hockey teams.
oh man he also built the flames too like he built them and then i guess you could argue nuke them
but he did build them didn't they win the president's trophy yeah and and the reason
goudreau left is because ownership didn't want to give him the money he wanted and brad did not have
the permission to go to goudreau with the money that he wanted until 11 p.m june 30th and that
is when goudreau was said i'm already out guys you don't play you don't treat me well so i'm
When Treliving came here, I was definitely willing to give him benefit of the doubt because I think the Flames organization, especially from the ownership level and the CEO, are just brutal to deal with.
Craig Conroy has the patience of a saint.
He's Mother Teresa.
They did not win the President's Trophy.
Well, they were good.
They had 40-40-40.
Division?
What?
They were the one seed in the West and then lost in five games to the eight seed in Colorado.
Right.
All right.
I don't know if you guys...
I don't think that's a compliment to Brad.
Yeah.
Hmm.
Yeah.
I thought that was the year.
What about the year they played the Oilers?
I don't know.
What?
Never mind.
They haven't won the President's Trophy since 19...
Well, they were good.
They were really good that year in the regular season.
All I'm saying is I was willing to give Brad benefit of the doubt.
Turns out Flames fans were right.
Yep.
No, thanks.
No, there was reason to...
Have we gotten all the major Super Chats?
We have.
Thank you for all the Super Chats.
Sorry we couldn't get to all the questions, but...
I mean, yeah, it's been two hours.
It's a long show.
We have, yeah.
Listen, the thing with Brad was, well,
we know that the knuckleheads above him are interfering,
which they're still doing, by the way, to the new guy.
You could argue he's handling it better,
but they're still doing it.
So I'm willing to see what he can do in Toronto.
Oh, okay.
i think i'm done seeing what he has to do in toronto and let's clean slate it fellas hey
you know what keith's brilliant keith pelly's brilliant he manages six sports teams
so here's what i'd like him just manage the business part here's what i'd like him to do
fix it fix it right from the beginning no coach no gm you have five agms you can pick which ones
to keep and which ones to not yeah i think that needs to be addressed too i think there's too
many voices in there i think i don't think they need that many gms i don't know enough about it
maybe there's not enough like not enough voices i mean maybe not avoid enough voices that are
listened to i'm sure there's plenty of voices and maybe it just turned into white noise
yeah oof yeah it's a rough way to go but the leafs had a terrible trade deadline just
just not really bad not good really bad and they got saved by the calgary flames believe it or not
uh eckman larson playing tomorrow's humiliating yep well he wanted us at least we know he wants
to be here yeah i was told nobody wants to play here he does uh he was the one who didn't want
to get traded he was sitting out because he would have waved yeah yeah anyway well he didn't have
trade protection but we will leave it there thank you so much for tuning in and don't forget we got
videos we even got more coming out tonight on the stp and youtube channel steve will be live
streaming tomorrow oh yeah oh my god do i have to do and then we'll have the stp on monday and
look out for the cj show as well happy trade deadline the steve dangle podcast follow the
guys on twitter at steve underscore dangle at adam w y l d e and at jesse blake connection complete
