Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Steve Dangle Podcast, powered by Sports Interaction. Want to bet? Spank Andy. Woo! S-D-P-P. The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wilde, and Jesse Blake. Let's go! Oh no!
Starting point is 00:00:21 Oh no! What? Oh no! Oh yeah? Ah! I'm scared, guys. Why are you scared? Because I was told by the two of you that the Senators were actually good last week.
Starting point is 00:00:33 And look at that. They're probably not going to make the playoffs. Man, I'm so bummed. Why are you so bummed? I'm so bummed. So bummed. I'm so bummed to see all those hot Senators takes from last summer just melt, melt into the earth. Do you remember when the narrative on Twitter for like a day, whose top six would you rather have?
Starting point is 00:00:56 The Leafs or the Senators? Do you remember that day? I do. That was like August. That was such an August-ass Twitter topic. Yeah. Sensor leaves. Who's top six?
Starting point is 00:01:05 Guys, listen. Let me tell you something. Nothing. And I'm sorry, Senators fans. I have to do this. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that Mark Mathot will have nothing to tweet about come the mid-April. Oh, he'll find something.
Starting point is 00:01:17 He'll find something. But I do want to actually, I want to quote tweet him because Locked On Senators tweeted something uh a couple days ago uh alex to brin cat has four even strength goals in 30 games in 2023 mark my thought said this a player looking for anything north of nine million dollars should be driving the line he's playing on let's stop pretending it's a line made issue the thing about mark is he's very honest about the same well and and i i thought man that's i i didn't know that i thought it was a really good point well you know how this goes how does this go well he's gonna end up taking less because he's had a dog ass season and then he's gonna be amazing
Starting point is 00:01:55 well that'll be great for the Sens next year I was told they were gonna be good this year I was told last year I was told last year that the rebuild was over were you not told that because I was told that well GMs say dumb things all the time because they're trying to sell tickets and stuff I get it I get it don't you get it I'm just wondering if Senators fans forgot how many good players you need to have for the team to be good they're in it they're in what they're in they're they're the outskirts of the playoff they're gonna be they're gonna be like 20th at the end of the year so they can draft in the middle of to late of the first round cool you're gonna you know what's gonna be really funny with the conor bedard sweepstakes oh yeah is when a team that
Starting point is 00:02:36 is too far out to get the first overall pick wins the draft lottery yes so what does that mean what will that what will that mean and then jesse i'm coming i feel like a lot of people don't know this like so let's say you are um you're 20th right yeah in a 32 team league and you win the draft you can only move up 10 spots 20 okay it's a new rule i don't know when it was instituted yeah but uh yeah so if you're 20th just pulling that number out of a hat i mean you'll pick third third that's good especially this year when it's like three four guys deep but it's not bedard so i think there's going to be you know how uh remember when team north america beat sweden in overtime at the world cup of hockey yeah and they celebrated so huge because they all thought
Starting point is 00:03:25 they advanced and they didn't yes do you know how many fans are gonna lose their minds because they see their team won the draft lottery they think they've just won conor bedard and no you know the top 11 teams have a shot at getting the number one overall pick the ottawa senators yeah the top 11 teams can win the lottery and move up because you can move up 10 spots right so the 11 team can move to one the ottawa senators are currently the 12th oh no man so if the ottawa senators won the draft lottery this offseason they would be exactly that they would move up to number two and not get Conor Bedard. In all honesty, the best thing they can do
Starting point is 00:04:07 is do what they're doing, which is go one and four in your last five. Because you want to be, if you're not going to make the playoffs, you want to be in the Bedard sweepstakes. And honestly, I got to ask this question. Do the Ottawa Senators really need to make the playoffs this year other than for ownership revenue reasons? They're selling the team in the summer anyway. That'll be announced in like July.
Starting point is 00:04:24 And it'll be like a Friday night news dump on like July 23rd or something. And I just, I feel like We'll have a video on it here on SDPN. That's right. That's right. And Steve will be at someone's cottage and he'll be like, shit, I got to do an instant reaction.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Someone's cottage because I'm smart. I don't want to have to do all the upkeep. Exactly. Exactly. So I can't afford it. I'm just feeling a little, a little like, you know, maybe we're losing track of what the senator should be doing this year, which is aiming to be competitive next year. They didn't have good defense.
Starting point is 00:04:53 They now have Chikrin, which is great. Awesome. Love that. Need a little bit more on the on the back end. And then they're going to be playing for the playoff. You know what, man? They're competitive this year. like they're competitive they're in it it's not an embarrassment right agreed agreed agreed um
Starting point is 00:05:08 as as recently as last week we were like oh they might and now you guys were trying to make me say that they were good well no they're doing well yeah they were doing well and they are better let's not act like the senators didn't take a ginormous leap forward this season where now you can see the pieces of a potential playoff team in the future see we weren't saying that before the hot streak though we were like oh man they're sort of in the exact same spot they were always going to be a team where things had to go right for them and as soon as josh norris got hurt they were not they were no longer going right cam talbot too that one kind of hurt anton forsberg wasn't as good as they expected yeah the forsberg piece was huge huge like because i i
Starting point is 00:05:50 looked at this and i was like oh anton force that's a steal like you're gonna get a number one goalie here for this entire year and he's not that this year it's a good tandem and you know they all next year they don't need as many things to go right exactly you know and with the chick having chikorin now for the future and all season next year and a healthy norris and just the guys together like drew getting in there another year with everybody i didn't know he still had this you know like they're they're they took a step forward this year and then hopefully next year is another one now i want to ask you i want to ask you guys something um so so the the center has had 73 points total last year they now have 70 so that's a good improvement yes yeah but you
Starting point is 00:06:29 were still looking at close to a 30 point improvement to probably make the playoffs right that was sort of yeah which is a little too much a little too much a little too much so we'll give them that can i ask you a question when was the last time the ottawa senators made the make the playoffs 2017 yep and that is this will if they don't make it this year it's six years without the playoffs man here's here's trivia for you when was the last time the ottawa senators finished in the top 10 in the nhl 2007 jesse i will trust steve's brain you're right they were nice that year when they went to the stanley yeah wait i believe stanley cup final yeah they were nice when they went to the stanley cup that's it yeah they were unbeatable fourth in the east
Starting point is 00:07:11 though remember how strong the west yeah oh wow back then it was like california and well it was california even good back then it's anaheim was well they won but then was where the kings and The Kings weren't. Sharks had to be. Sharks were good. I want to say the Kings were on their way up. They had young up-and-comers like Dustin Brown and Ante Kopitar. I don't know if they had Mike Richards yet.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Wow. Wayne Simmons, I think? No, he was Philly. They might have still had Braden Shen. That might have been before Shen was traded for Simmons. Simmons was drafted by the Kings. Drafted by L.A. He was, so he would have been there.
Starting point is 00:07:48 He would have been in L.A. yes or was it simmons we don't need to it was simmons and shen in the same deal no let's let's let's keep guessing no let's keep doing that no it was simmons and shen in the same deal from mike richards okay well which is i think i'd like to wayne simmons was playing for the sue greyhounds in 0708 so love that so kyle dubas was like you know kyle dubas was the equipment boy at that point he's like you know i'm gonna sign him one day and uh he was playing for the owens sound attack in uh 06 07 love that i i don't think he was on the kings in the 07 season okay he was he was close he's our draft he was a literal child whatever man what do you know whatever
Starting point is 00:08:36 um he's not a literal child we are the same age yeah you were i was in university you were a child than oh six oh and oh six yeah yeah high school little baby boy first year of university grown adult man up pay your bills responsibility student debt anyway are we gonna talk about the raptors beating the bulls last night let's talk about it the fucking chicago blackhawks knocked off the bros boston bruins man why why is it not panic time huh steve yell guy yelly guy on youtube huh i think that was lenis allmark's first negative impact game in fantasy this whole year and also you have him in fantasy don't you i do i got him off waivers you got him off waivers that's disgusting i had a nightmare day uh in fantasy i'm still winning it's the
Starting point is 00:09:28 quarterfinal this week but i had allmark and they wouldn't announce oh no you know what i messed up So I have Kachetkov. I managed to get him back. He's really good. But he wasn't starting. So I grabbed Markstrom, who was starting against the Coyotes, which I thought would work out. Didn't. And I got him at 7-0-1.
Starting point is 00:09:53 The Hurricanes game started at 7, which meant I had a non-starting Kachetkov starting for me. Oh, that sucks. So Allmark was like a negative .4. Markstrom was like a positive .2 but it didn't matter because I didn't even get him in the fucking lineup bullshit I'm still winning fuck you Mikey Stevens
Starting point is 00:10:12 I just want to know where your video is sky is falling in Boston you know what it's true it's true Jesse because Steve's numbers do better when they lose exactly it's what he wants that's why he's dedicated his life to being a Leafs fan it's true for them to lose anytime you're on a historic pace
Starting point is 00:10:28 and you lose one game you have to fucking lose it to the blackhawks yeah it's pretty bad i don't think the bruins gave a fuck about that game which is a problem it's a problem and like also sometimes like i don't know give the bruins or sorry give the blackhawks credit okay like there was another one there was another one where uh uh do you have from the cj show chat the uh coyotes record in mullet arena uh 11 four and 3 if i remember correctly no it's not 11 4 it's good it's really good 18 11 and 3 i'm i would love to find the clip from before the season i'm almost positive i called this
Starting point is 00:11:17 i'm almost positive that i said they'd have a winning record at home because teams go into that building and they're like what the fuck is this like they don't know how to adjust because they haven't played in a building like that in forever the building most of the building's ridiculous it's the light the lights aren't broadcast quality no why do we still have shadows on the ice like it's 19 dickety two because it's like it's like a regional shaw broadcast of the gems like it's i don't know kojico kinks and frontenacs which they're all fine but they're like local small town broadcast it's not an nhl building right so i think the Coyotes players, and I'm almost positive
Starting point is 00:12:00 I called this, they walk into that building every day because it's their home building, and they're like, yep, this is normal. And then the visiting team is still in awe of the novelty. Last thing. I want to play this game. What's the game? Hockey? Blackhawks scored six
Starting point is 00:12:16 goals last night versus the Boston Bruins. They beat them. Oh, no. How many of the Blackhawks goal scorers can you name? Well, that's really hard. None of them? i think okay based on tweets that i saw i think boris kachuk had one correct you got one one of six
Starting point is 00:12:38 joey anderson had one correct hey good we got two of six leaf great joey anderson you got six guesses and now we're just gonna name black hawk taylor radish taylor radish had two no taylor Radish had three Patrick Radish. Yep. So we only have one left, right? Yes.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Oh, my God. You'll never get it. Will it be in a million years? I'll never get it. You guys have almost nailed all the goals. I don't remember his
Starting point is 00:13:08 first name, but Gust. Gust. Isn't it Gust? No. Gust. Adam. I have no idea who
Starting point is 00:13:15 plays for the Blackhawks. But let me think. So we got. Is it forward or defense? Do we think because we've had all five. All five have been
Starting point is 00:13:21 forwards right now because there's three forwards that have scored. connor murphy this is a right winger number 58 i'll give you his number number 58 well he's not an nhl player that's not an nhl player's number it's not one line he's got three goals on the year he's born in georgetown ontario she's right oh we like georgetown 2017 arizona coyotes draft pick third round seventh pick 69th overall you should be nice 69th overall pick in
Starting point is 00:13:53 2017. What's his name? 23. He's 6'3". Oh. He's a blender dude. He basically gave us his entire resume. And we still... 112 career NHL games. Get the fuck
Starting point is 00:14:09 out of here. I mean, I can't believe that. Okay, I... Is it... I don't even know if he's on the Blackhawks. Entwistle? Mackenzie Entwistle! Mackenzie Entwistle! What? go what let's go i can't believe that what's his first name mckenzie and whistle let's fucking go
Starting point is 00:14:31 that's unreal oh i'm gonna ride this for the rest of the day stevie we didn't guess one thing wrong we got the whole thing we know you did we did one yeah one one incorrect whatever that's fine oh i'm riding this for the rest of the day mckenzie and whistle let's go let's go I love that. All right, all right, all right. Cam Stewart's going to be up in a little bit here from Drew and Stu. That's a little later on in the show. We're going to learn how to finally do a March Madness bracket,
Starting point is 00:15:02 because Steve and I know nothing about it, and Jesse is highly invested. I know. Gorgonzola, or whatever the team. Gorgonzola. Gorgonzola. It's Gonzaga. Oh, whatever. I'm invested like how everybody else kind of gets invested,
Starting point is 00:15:18 in that I care about it for two days leading up to the tournament. I get, you know, can I say, I get mad at people that are like, oh, all these, all these fake losers who, uh, who don't watch college basketball all year. Like, yo, I am the fake loser and I don't mind. I don't mind being, listen, I can't like every sport. It's impossible. I'm a fake winner. Yeah, there you go.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Well, if you do win the bracket, it would be kind of funny. In the meantime, though, did somebody say skip? Did somebody say skip? Just a reminder that if you use the promo code Dangle starting on Thursday morning and going through the sunday night you'll get 15 off orders of 30 or more all over southern ontario and of course other select locations in ontario as well now uh we've tried a whole bunch of things right we've we've tried a whole bunch of different types of food um we've tried the chicken nuggets i'm not sure if steve hey oh boneless wings boneless wings did you hear about the story by
Starting point is 00:16:07 the way i did it was only tweeted to me 40 times i don't think i've ever been tagged in an article more than this one yeah it was it was a lot so um he's a guy suing a restaurant because they he claims that their boneless wings are just chicken nuggets which is true so he should win all of the money i don't understand why he should get money for that though i'm just gonna tell you i don't either i have to say that the company's handled it really well i'll just tell you the restaurant uh they're like it's true our boneless wings are all white meat chicken our hamburgers contain no ham our buffalo wings are zero percent buffalo like they're going in on it like they're i have to give them credit like what why can't the resolution be okay fine also you get no money
Starting point is 00:16:52 it it should be that it should be that but of course you know it can't were you wronged are you out because of this it's it's deceptive business practices is what the article stuff oh yeah it's false advertising you you know what i say up your nose with a rubber hose for that okay sorry to use such harsh language now one thing that that we've seen a lot in when we've been talking about the skip the dishes thing is a lot of people from around the country saying what the hell it's not available where i am and i get that i understand that so my question to you is if we were doing canadian cities and skip the dishes were to roll this out in canadian cities We got Mitch's dishes
Starting point is 00:17:33 We need to have names for other Other cities And other players in those cities So if it was like The Calgary Flames No we gotta go with Jerome Because He doesn't play for them
Starting point is 00:17:51 He played for a decade What are you talking about Because I'm going with iconic amazing This thing has to happen In this decade Steve so how about huberdo's donuts or something huberdo yeah
Starting point is 00:18:08 there's just various donuts around the city or we do aginla i don't know oh no we can't do that 1982 why don't we do the siddines in vancouver because they're super relevant we could
Starting point is 00:18:24 they're coaches i guess oh let's let's do gretzky in edmonton purees purees no Where is he? Vancouver He's not playing on the team No he's not Yeah but that's where he played
Starting point is 00:18:39 I think it's a great idea We're raised pure age Coming to a restaurant What about Edmonton guys McDeal's McDeal's No that's a different company Can't it be that
Starting point is 00:18:56 I don't think you can do that you're right you're right okay um they don't earn they don't own the letters m and c they kind of do what about connor mcmenu nope i think you're just doing the same thing you just did okay what about leon drive it to your house oh what i was gonna go with leon dry rub oh oh there you go but you gotta have you gotta you gotta keep it open right because it's got to be a full menu like mitch's dishes or his dishes because he oh i'm trying to do like a food no no we're talking them a full menu like if they were to do an endorsement like they did with mitch oh but in the city mark stromboli
Starting point is 00:19:36 all right all right all right ladar's tatar tatar's tatar oh he's in new jersey now what about ruin it and i know we're not allowed to do that we're not allowed to do former players what about winnipeg winnipeg winnipeg okay well let's go with an easy one to rhyme. Shifleys. Well, I mean, to me, Wheeler makes the most sense because your meal comes to you on wheels, right? Wheeler's Deals.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Oh, there you go. Wheeler's Deals. I like that. Deals on wheels. Oh, I got it. Meals on wheels. I don't think it can be that one. No? Has that been done? What about, okay, Ottawa. Ottawa. Ottawa. Ottawa.
Starting point is 00:20:22 um timmy's no can't do that oh yeah you can't do timmy's you're right oh my god can't do that um shabbat chalet oh there it is no shabbat chalet
Starting point is 00:20:38 various dipping sauces from around the city i like that i like that too that's good and then lastly the montreal canadians um hmm are we allowed to do injured players is coffield okay yeah yeah that's okay jack eyes rib eyes no but again it's got to be it's gonna be menu it's gotta be full menu you know suzuki's suze chef
Starting point is 00:21:05 house whoa nick's picks oh that's the best one so that's too easy good that's good that's too easy I like it. Yeah, sometimes you gotta keep it simple. Listen. Jerome Aginla. The promo code is DANGLE. Aginla. $15 off a $30 or more order, obviously.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Skip the dishes. It starts at 12.01 Thursday morning. Goes to 11.59 Sunday night. And the reason we asked you about the rest of the country is... Well, I don't know. Iggy's Shin Diggy. Stop it. Let's wrap that segment up.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Did somebody say skip? All right, so did you guys see the Big City Greens hockey game? The animated hockey game? Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Big City Greens is the... Sorry, I don't watch the program. Yeah, I don't watch it either.
Starting point is 00:22:00 I've never actually seen it, but it's the Capitals and New York Rangers played a game, and the whole thing with puck tracking and player tracking with computer animation is they were able to in in real time generate a game uh that was completely 3d animated on the disney channel which is amazing yeah this is exactly the technology i was talking about so yeah flipping cool yeah what technology when were you talking about it i know when but most people that might be 100 episodes ago i'm not maybe it was like i don't know a month month and a half ago we were talking about uh vr technology live at the game so it's it's not sorry it's not vr it's augmented yeah sorry it's augmented reality right all right whoa it's like i'm there
Starting point is 00:22:44 with my kleenex box it's like i'm there now the the difference is this is more i guess vr sort of no this is augmented reality yeah um because you're not participating in it it's just on the screen i would i wouldn't say it's either you know it's its own thing yeah it's its own thing yeah animated i guess i don't know well they use player tracking data to power a 3d animated capitals rangers game is how they're describing it with disney characters yeah it's all powered by basically the same technology the same player tracking technology so the stuff that's going to be available in arena is is going to be to enhance your experience this is to change your experience entirely and kind of make it more fun and and uh it's it's i'm not
Starting point is 00:23:31 used to technology this early on being this good um so i'm you almost expected it to be a little glitchy right shitty frankly yeah like and no it's good it's a great experience can we we're not gonna play a clip but i just sent you jesse a a video from natasha gershwin on twitter and uh 10 seconds in there was just i want you to freeze frame on one clip if you can uh and run it up on the screen because i thought it was amazing it wasn't just that they that they did a nice hockey rink it wasn't just that they did the players they had you know when you look at the the rink itself they got a bunch of like animals around it and like you know i generated people and that sort of thing but they also did it for the broadcasters and they did it live
Starting point is 00:24:17 and this is fascinating i don't know if you saw kevin weeks i did but like how cool is this like how cool is that that is so cool and like what a great idea you know like you see uh like video games motion capture and they got to wear all the little balls and stuff and the little trackers for their facial motion like i don't think they had to stand there and like like little body suits like no it's just the technology is at a place where they can just make kevin weeks into a goalie like he probably didn't have to wear the pad look how smooth that is it's incredible yeah it's ridiculous that that technology is it's such a great idea and here's the thing and we were talking to somebody in the marketing department a couple weeks ago and he
Starting point is 00:25:04 said something that really blew my mind we were talking about the pitch clock in the mlb and if you haven't been watching this there is now a pitch clock in the mlb to make sure the games remains short right yes and uh and if you go over it's uh you know it's a ball i saw someone struck someone out in 20 seconds yeah that's crazy and and people baseball fans were at you know because baseball fans are super traditional right they were at first like a rabble rabble and then i just saw one of the biggest baseball fans i know uh on twitter he was like i don't know if i can ever go back to life without the pitch club yeah it's so good because it's been absolutely fantastic in spring training the game is two and a half hours and really um what they're
Starting point is 00:25:45 finding is with the with younger with the youngins the younger generation kids are not watching full games anymore they're watching highlights on youtube and what's driving the uh the sports now is the creators themselves so a lot of the popularity of a lot of these sports is being driven by uh and i won't include the nhl in this because they still haven't done this but the mlb and i believe the nba give away their highlights they allow you to use them royalty free because they know that the creators that use them are perpetuating and essentially marketing the game for them for free and they're profiting off that but it's also making the games bigger and better and the nhl has yet to do that but if you look i think john boy's got access to they've got all
Starting point is 00:26:31 the mlb highlights like forever and ever he just uses it well he did the the div one game that we were talking about where uh there was the terrible call by the ump who ended up getting suspended he just uses that footage and like he makes money off of it well i'm pretty sure the mlb lets him do it yeah which is i mean what a concept it's cool like yeah it's a great idea it helps baseball and if they gotta take some sort of kickback like whatever i don't whatever if i were allowed to use the footage and they're like but you have to give us you know 20 percentage yeah yeah fine cool take it let me use the damn footage but it yeah no it doesn't quite work that way but like not for the nhl you're not nhl should be an early adopter well i mean and on this one they are i
Starting point is 00:27:16 mean you could do that easily with baseball you could do that easily with football it's so cool it's such a great thing and i hope i hope this is the beginning of the nhl coming into the modern age in terms of um allowing creators to to drive things because i think what it does is it makes the sports more compelling jesse showed a clip where like part of the technology isn't quite there yet so there's a goal and when all the players get together and they're celebrating they just all stand facing the same way looks like wayne gretzky 3d hockey they're they're hanging out together it makes it way better and the ref is a chicken yeah the ref's a chicken he's very funny absolutely perfect what so you guys have never you guys don't watch the show
Starting point is 00:27:56 with your i've never seen big city greens uh i've seen it i don't i don't have cable so i definitely haven't seen it wham i have disney plus i probably could yeah it looks it has disney show so yeah okay um they have a place it's called wholesome greens i thought that was very cute i like that i like wholesome foods it's called oh wholesome food sorry i said yeah instead of whole foods oh i like that that's funny it's very funny i like that well and like the so the action on the ice is mostly controlled by the players and the player tracking technology but around the building you can or sorry around the rink you can make it whatever you want yeah you know not like this game was outside in the middle of a city street well and a kid is far
Starting point is 00:28:38 more likely to watch something like that right because like listen when we grew up and i hate to sound old but there was like for me i think there was like we maybe went to channel 48 when i was growing up oh man like we didn't have like pre pre-satellite and all that and then and then digital cable anything above 32 it was like 51 oh i guess where i was living it was disney channel or family channel sorry what was the score for you 62 53 i think i was 62 for the score i used to remember all the channels off my heart yeah there were 45 was teletune but there was like a bunch of 25 was ytv like blank channels remember those channels just black screen and you're like what is this there were several things to me as a child that indicated you were rich
Starting point is 00:29:19 number one you brought dunkaroos to school every day number two you had a in-ground basketball and number three your tv went above 40 what was what was what was much music for you which is 29 29 yeah i had 29 as well you had much music you must have had that yeah 30 yeah i thought it was So like, based on the competition available when we were growing up, cartoons came on at a specific time. There was no cartoon network. There was no Teletoon. So when you wanted to watch cartoons, it was Saturday morning.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Or you put in a VHS. I sound super old. But what kids today have is the ability to watch this shit at any time. When did you grow up? You didn't have Family Channel? I didn't have Family Channel. No. No.
Starting point is 00:30:07 My family? No. No. No. Cheap, cheap, cheap. I had Teletoon. i tell you why tv i had teletune at my mom's house yeah tell it to my mom my dad was like my dad was like you don't need to watch more tv and then we didn't have it you know what the hell do you need
Starting point is 00:30:21 to watch more tv for you watch enough hockey as it is so that the thing is what i'm saying is that kids have there's so much competition for kids and their interests now and hockey it's sort of like a tough sell when you've got you know 40 hours of freaking cocoa melon available on netflix to go up and actually watch a thing so this is really cool I hope they do this with like Formula 1 as well like how fun would that be if they had a bunch of like race cars that were with Lightning McQueen
Starting point is 00:30:47 you know what I bet this game wasn't blacked out can we fucking stop we have to stop it's 2023 we gotta stop blackouts are ridiculous there was a viral clip the other day
Starting point is 00:31:05 from the NBA where a dude who lives in new york couldn't watch the brooklyn nets he's like i'm in new york and i watched that because the nba has the same things with restrictions on black and what did that guy do he either stole it or didn't watch right so you lost a viewer for no reason yeah or yeah they they i think the prevailing thought is oh people are going to simply call their provider and purchase it nope hey speaking of which uh the reason the blackouts exist by the way are regional broadcasters the reason regional broadcasters exist is that it used to make sense to run a local sport in its local town or city and make money off of it now where are they
Starting point is 00:31:46 unfortunately now you can't make as much money off of it and bally sports which is owned by diamond sports group the largest regional sports network in the united states has chapter filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy they missed a 140 million dollar interest payment can you imagine that that's their interest payment they own 19 networks under the bally banner those networks have the rights to 42 professional teams uh 14 baseball 16 nba and 12 nhl the company said in a release on tuesday and this is from ap uh that it expects to continue to operate during the bankruptcy process and that coverage of the games will not be affected diamond sports is also negotiating a restructuring agreement with its debt holders a lot of times what what they'll do
Starting point is 00:32:28 is they'll file, they'll restructure the debt in the payment plan to make it easier to pay off. And then, because again, if you borrow, imagine the kind of money you have to have borrowed for your interest payment to be $140 million, right? And it goes back to that old money thing. It's like, if you borrow $10,000 and you can't pay it, you have a problem. If you borrow $10 million, or sorry, $10 billion from a bank and you can't pay it, then you both have a problem. And so the debt holders in this instance have to work with Bally. Otherwise, if they go file for bankruptcy, they wipe out the debt. Listen, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:03 And the company doesn't exist anymore. Is the cap going up? Well, I think that means that they're going to be paying still for their rights. St. Clair Broadcast Group bought the sports network from Disney for $10 billion in 2019. And obviously, you know how the last few years have played out. um they own a billion dollars in rights currently mostly to baseball teams um so the idea that the rights um would affect the nhl cap is weird to me because the majority of the money that they have spent on team rights is in baseball so like like majority as in like i think it's over 80
Starting point is 00:33:44 so if that's if it's 80 of 1 billion and then the nba is involved as well with 16 teams then the nhl is probably on what is it 30 40 million dollars because the nba is going to be freaking like yeah a lot so if you know we're going to talk about this we're recording agent provocateur after this jesse and i and we're talking alan about it if the nhl tries to sell that to you it's probably a lie it's probably yeah this isn't an nhl issue this is a mainly mlb issue where they have their season coming up and they need 17 teams to get a broadcast partner yeah you know yeah because these rights would have already been paid for yeah most most of those deals are probably taken care of at this point in the season where we have like 20 games left for most of these teams
Starting point is 00:34:29 it's probably not an nhl issue so that shouldn't be an excuse for batman to raise the to lower the cap or to keep it similar well that that's that remains to be seen but i would say that um you can't the cap isn't based on next season the cap is based on hockey related revenues this season and so yes it is well no it is i know but no no but that's my sweet summer child but that's the rule so if you it um i i have a hard time believing because here's the thing it's the interest payment they didn't pay it's not the team's they paid the they paid the leagues if they hadn't paid the leagues they wouldn't be running the games so it's the interest on the loan they didn't pay so that the leagues are paid up the the question you asked steve about what
Starting point is 00:35:11 about next season is i think the most fascinating question because the the 14 nhl teams the way it's going to go is they've got to find a new way to broadcast these games and they're either going to link up with other regional sports or networks you know find a new channel on cable to produce those or they're going to hopefully come up with some innovative way to broadcast the game which might cost the user more uh but be more beneficial in the end because of the experience if i'm a tampa fan like let's because i think tampa is one of the affected team um if i'm a tampa fan and the lightning are broadcasting their own game i better be able to watch that in anywhere in the states in canada in fucking madagascar i better be able to watch you should be able to anywhere
Starting point is 00:35:57 because it's the future i don't know if you've watched mls on apple tv no um i know you're not a huge mls guy but it's easy you simply go on apple tv and turn it on and it shows up yeah it's 2023 that's how it should work well and i wonder i wondered about that like did the nhl miss the boat the rights conversation last summer that they had which was great i mean espn paid a fortune tnt paid a fortune that's great but did they miss an opportunity by not going to the streaming services and going what would you offer you know there was no conversation even had and i wonder i mean maybe the streaming services were like uh we don't care about hockey in the states but i can tell you this you want to win streaming in canada admittedly 10 times less the market you
Starting point is 00:36:40 want to win streaming in canada you gotta own hockey so if you want to remain relevant as a streaming service in canada which is an important enough market you gotta own hockey i wonder when sportsnet no longer owns the rights which is what two three years from now five i think five more after this year four or five yeah really i think it's five uh four or five okay it's a lot i wonder how many i wonder how many people are going to be lining up to go i need to take those canadian rights um and how much competition sports that will have to retain it it's going to be fascinating and and again the the idea that there is any regional blackouts anymore if if bally uh and diamond sports group spins out bally and they know and saint claire doesn't have any ownership
Starting point is 00:37:25 rights on this anymore they could very easily right now end blackout right now could be the opportunity you just you just put it to a streaming platform you talk to espn you've got espn plus people hate espn plus well apparently it's really hard to watch a game yeah but you got to double down on cable bouncing back it's i mean listen the generals were due i can't stand it i can't stand it um but big shout out to the nhl for that the one thing i'll say about the big city greens thing and uh i want to shout out um somebody's second favorite greens jesse um uh juliana nick nikash i believe is her name um but uh she's she's on twitter and she's i
Starting point is 00:38:13 believe she's associated with the phillies uh social media team she said the nhl can choose to do cool things like this uh and they do but where was the marketing around it i had no clue it was happening me neither other than that initial press release did you guys see anything we can't we couldn't watch it like it wasn't that i feel like that's uh that's not it's the future no but like we don't get that channel here but but i'm i'm seeing americans say that she's an american okay there's nothing on twitter about that nothing i don't know i feel like are you i feel like if you were a teenager or a child watching disney plus they probably marketed it there they didn't i watched disney plus see i also wonder about marketing today because i feel like
Starting point is 00:38:58 if you tell someone something is going to be on like a week or two in advance they've already forgotten about it by the time it shows up so i wonder if the new state of marketing is you go here here's what's on today i don't know i don't know i i thought people talked about this they did when they when the press release came out and then nothing no i thought they talked about yesterday when it was on i thought yeah but leading up to this is my point when you have an event like this that is groundbreaking you want to promote it for a couple weeks beforehand they didn't do that they did not do that that's a failure also why was it on a tuesday oh i just think they just wanted a random name okay what do you mean well that's that's how you put i think
Starting point is 00:39:40 it was a very positive thing that they did and i didn't feel like we need to cap it by nitpicking on the i'm nitpicking yeah i don't know why that could have just i'm a hundred percent thing i don't know why that could just be a good story because it's a slam dunk jess it's easy it's an easy one to promote hey isn't this fun we're doing this for kids put it in a twitter ad call elon and buy one of his shitty ads i think they did and that wouldn't have been to your timeline no make sure it works and is good you know you never know i wonder if there's a concern with because i want to say this is the second one like what if what if this doesn't go great what if i don't know they didn't worry about the board ads going great they didn't that's a pretty good point that's pretty
Starting point is 00:40:27 when does the nhl ever worry about getting it right well maybe the marketing is a bunch of hockey fans go hey this thing was fucking cool and next time it comes on we watch that i think i think we just that the marketing was we just spent like 10 minutes being like oh look at this cool stuff after it happened though okay and then they'll do another one and it'll be awesome like what i don't know why we have to go there i want it i i i think they could have done a better job i really do i believe that and couldn't we all stick into it now at everything speaking of marketing let's talk about this uh did you find did you hear that nola chari who loves cookies apparently has a tim hortons deal you're joking i'm not already i'm gonna send it to you it's on
Starting point is 00:41:06 tiktok so we're allowed to play it um but i i sent it to jesse just now on text message there jesse um nola chari loves cookie they call him cookie in the dressing room now there was a reddit sorry of reddit there is a tiktok that went up it was it's since been deleted however it looks to be a snippet from a tim hortons commercial and i just wanted you guys to see it you got here five seconds ago i know but he's been first off he's been the identity of the third and fourth line since he's been here and i want to know what you think of this commercial why when did this start like what was the reason they called him because he loves cookies that's it it started i want to say he was on the panthers and like he showed up and was basically like oh you guys have cookies
Starting point is 00:41:52 or something like that and it was a very mob thing like jimmy the rat or whatever oh cookie oh he loves cookies we're gonna call you cookie and and now he's like two teams removed from the panthers and his name is still cookie he got to the leafs and the instant like he's been a leaf for three weeks yeah if that like what was the trade deadline yeah okay if you're a hockey player and you become a leaf pretend to love a certain kind of food you'll have a deal you'll have it you'll actually have a sponsorship within the month how long did it take for ilia mckay to have a soup deal oh it took one funny interview oh those look so good and mini eggs cookie he's got a mini egg cookie that someone's got to sign a league men deal with the leafs in the summer is
Starting point is 00:42:44 there any sound no sound you want to listen my nickname is premium steak cookie approved they call me way goo sorry keep going so you'll have these maybe i'll just slide these in yeah yeah yeah thanks chef no worries anytime now chef hi i'm here to taste some cookies it's me cookie nola chari i'm the cookie guy no no stress just come on back thank you i think it's i think essentially they shot that uh because tim hortons has a tim hortons in the scotia bank too so it's an easy one like that's an easy shot nola chari was traded to the leafs february 18th it's march 15th he plays on the fourth line he has a cookie deal were they so not supposed to release this you said it was deleted it was deleted off tiktok so i wonder
Starting point is 00:43:41 if it if it leaked and it wasn't supposed to be out but um it's it it's there and it's making its rounds on twitter like they've barely even been home yeah he became a leaf less than a month ago they've had three home games three practices it's still up is it up yeah it's a pay partnership with tim hortons oh it is okay yeah it's still there yeah he's been elite for less than a month he hasn't played a i don't think a moment above the fourth line they've been home for a grand total of like a week week and a half total of days and he has shot a tim hortons commercial but here's my question sign with the fucking lease steve does nola charry rock oh absolutely cookies rock yes okay so then it's an easy deal it's easy it's easy and that's the thing about
Starting point is 00:44:30 playing in toronto is your yeah instant your instant like what's it sydney crosby or john who did bread uh crosby crosby did bread deal john tovars did coconut water yeah for a long time in uh rabba yeah you couldn't go into a rabba without seeing john tovars has his own cereal he does i ate it this morning oh yeah you buy it yeah i see it at the grocery store all the time i i hadn't seen it for a while and i was like fuck i love that i'm gonna grab that I ate it this morning. Fuck, it was Sobeys. There you go.
Starting point is 00:45:03 What is it called? Something 9-1. It's like Kellogg's. Is it? It's granola cereal. There's like little blueberries and chocolate in it. And kale. There's no kale. You put kombucha in it instead of milk.
Starting point is 00:45:20 This is a recommended way to eat it. It says on the back. I love that. Delicious. yeah it's uh it's amazing it's very good stuff dude if you're like hmm should i take this deal or this slightly less deal in toronto name yourself after a food you'll be a millionaire and the great thing is too that in if you get an endorsement deal you don't have to pay escrow on that the players have to pay like 20 escrow on every paycheck you don't have to uh when you do
Starting point is 00:45:49 the endorsements that's where you make your money yeah but taxes canadian tax yeah and you can't buy house here according to an agent who doesn't know what they're talking about um that's dan milstein he's wrong he tweeted that that was dan milstein yeah dan milstein tweeted that and it's i thought it was someone else no you can it was dan milstein you can trust me on that well why are all those clients here exactly that's what everybody's saying didn't you just sign a guy up in vancouver for two more years yeah yeah he was practically like patrick alvin yeah yeah whatever No, Dan Milstein is the GM of the Vancouver Canucks. Yes.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Yeah, exactly. They're buddies. Alvin, whatever. I am jealous, though, that Vancouver got Kuzmenko. He's pretty cool. And Mikheyev. I like Mikheyev. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:46:31 Ryan O'Reilly will be back for the playoffs for the Leafs. Kyle Dubas said, as far as, like, breaking a finger goes, he said the way that the kind of break that he got, they got lucky on. Able to fix it up quick. Good. Good news. You know what's funny?
Starting point is 00:46:45 like all the uh i think we all know what a hockey guy yeah all the hockey guys have spoken to they're like really yeah okay like it wasn't even like muscular stuff ligament stuff we worry about that um but like uh for a player like ryan o'reilly as injuries go broken finger you take that yeah what was he coming off of a broken foot um yeah yeah again bone it's not good you don't want to break bones but it's an easier recovery than you know having to fix your knee from scratch like connor mcdavid right how the hell or rehab rehab it from scratch like he did because he didn't get surgery um tonight uh uh jesse and steve and uh producer drew and producer nick and i believe justin as well is gonna you guys gonna be not confirmed yet all right you guys
Starting point is 00:47:37 are all going down to the abs game i pulled out because it just schedules too much but here here's who's out for the abs landis cog helm eric johnson praville fransoos josh manson curtis mcdermott and a turi leckanen and leckanen's just came out he just he he scored three points in half a game broke his finger left the game so the top six for uh the avalanche are on the right wing ranton center mckinnon left wing evan rodriguez uh right wing on line two valerie natushkin Center, JT Comfer. Left wing, Dennis Malgan. So we have two former Leafs in the top six.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Now on the fourth line. Rodriguez is the other one. Matt Nito, Alex Newhook, and Alex Galchenyuk. They have a former Leaf on every line. Oh, my God. Well, no, they don't. Third line. Third line, no.
Starting point is 00:48:25 You got the star, Logan O'Connor on the third line. Yes, that's right. You like Logan O'Connor? I liked him in the playoffs. He was good. Yeah. Big game, Logan. So is Malgan going to get a hat trick in Toronto tonight, guys?
Starting point is 00:48:36 uh is this the jl absolutely evan rodriguez evan rodriguez yes yeah yeah the galchenyuk hat trick is two goals for his team and one for the other he was a great leaf but fuck i'll never forgive him oh man that was a he was a very good leaf that but that giveaway in overtime overshadows everything he did everything also i have to say it was it was really surprising when galch like when when that all happened that went down he had a good playoff for the Leafs except for that giveaway which was a big giveaway and then he scored the game-tying goal yeah and then the Leafs tried to re-sign him in the offseason and he was like no I don't think I will yeah he fucked up and now he hasn't been able to stick in an NHL lineup since no to in fairness
Starting point is 00:49:20 what happened this past summer is the Avs were gonna sign him and then he got hurt and then it didn't make sense to sign him because you want to cap relief yeah so I think he was on an AHL deal I'm not totally sure but at some point you know after playing with the Colorado Eagles and rehabbing from whatever his injury was they called him up and here he is in Toronto because of course wow
Starting point is 00:49:45 now the last time the Avalanche came to Toronto do you remember the score guys I think it was 8-3 against Jonas Johansson I think and I'm willing to bet the Avalanche remember
Starting point is 00:50:00 do you think the Avs win tonight guys jesse what are you what are they coming off of that's a good question it's a good question because the leafs tend to do a good job of the problem is they have too many games like their game against the buffalo sabers but they usually bounce back pretty well these days they are six three and one uh two game win streak right now 13 at least they're gonna win yeah why why why because they're playing yeah no they're playing well they yeah they just beat up on montreal 8-4 Fat and happy. Yeah, they're good.
Starting point is 00:50:34 They got two more games on the road trip to make it up. They can go beat Ottawa and Detroit. Leafs are going to take this one coming off of a loss. Leafs always play well after a loss. Shen's back. Vibes are good. Shen won't play until this weekend. Yeah, but he's back.
Starting point is 00:50:47 Vibes. Okay. That's good. That matters. I'm not worried. I'm not worried at all about the Leafs. Not concerned. Okay.
Starting point is 00:50:53 All right. This is a good victory. So we're going to, we got to talk about this because March Madness starts tomorrow. I want to talk a little bit about how to do a bracket properly if there is a proper way. I know Jesse's invested in this and I have done them before,
Starting point is 00:51:05 but Steve knows nothing. So we're going to teach you with Cam Stewart right now. You can bet that with David Bastel. Brought to you by Sports Interaction. Get in the action and make a play.
Starting point is 00:51:18 19 plus. Please play responsibly. All right, welcoming on Cam from Drew and Stu. Give him a round of applause for what? Come on, come on. I was doing a thumbs up. I was drinking water.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Cam, we haven't seen you since the Super Bowl. How have you been? I've been pretty good. Yeah, the Super Bowl was interesting. I had Philadelphia, but we hit a lot of props there. What a wild game. It was great. Yeah, my girlfriend's still a little bit rattled
Starting point is 00:51:39 because I was supposed to take her to New Orleans if Philadelphia won the game outright. So now I better hit something in the NCAA tournament or golf. But there's lots of stuff to bet on. Yes. Yeah, and we know you're coming back for that with Bruins, too. You guys have this crazy, rabid audience. But we wanted to have you on.
Starting point is 00:51:55 To talk about the Masters. To not talk about the Masters. Damn it. We're talking. We are going to do that. I'll talk about the Masters at another time. I got some flyers for you guys. We are going to do that.
Starting point is 00:52:06 But here's the thing. Jesse knows how to do a bracket for March Madness, which starts tomorrow. Steve and I know nothing. And we would like to get involved because, you know, we've always sort of been, I've done it, but I don't know what I'm doing. Is there a way to do it as a beginner? And that's why we want to have you on to like to do this properly and maybe ensure some success.
Starting point is 00:52:24 So some of the people in your pool, um, you kind of make them look stupid, even though they've been doing it for 15 years. No, there's no way to do it. Actually. I'd prefer the dumber you are, the less, you know, the better you'll do in March badness. It's actually funny. One of those things, paralysis by analysis, the more, you know, the worse it gets. Like I actually watched college basketball and I'm nervous going, okay, I think I know
Starting point is 00:52:44 what teams are good or whatever. And then it's kind of like the teacher that I had in high school when she played pro line, I go, wow, how did you win $24,000? oh i went to the city that i'd rather vacation and i'm like oh okay so my research all week that was pretty stupid what a waste of time like you know what i mean that's how people win this stuff you you take a few underdogs but you have to ride a couple teams that you like i guess go all the way and this year it's pretty wide open though like they're they're like i'm not gonna i'm i'm gonna say this guys you know an 11 seed a 12 seed they can win a couple games but actually winning
Starting point is 00:53:15 the whole thing you want to take a one to a three um i don't think i don't think there's like flyers that can actually go all the way and win. There might be a St. Peter's this year. Back in the past, George Mason, you can get to the Elite Eight or the Final Four, but actually winning the whole thing, eventually it catches up with you. So, you know, the team that's basically,
Starting point is 00:53:34 a lot of people like Houston. A lot of people like the Houston Cougars. I don't think they're going to win. I don't think the Houston Cougars are going to win. I took Memphis in their conference tournament in the American Athletic. They beat them. The problem is Houston has a player, Sasser,
Starting point is 00:53:49 one of the best players in the nation and he's out he says he's going to play in the tournament but he's hurt and without him the houston cougars they have a lot of problems one of the best defensive teams in the nation but they'll have problems scoring so sometimes guys you look at the favorites and then you put a line through the favorites that you don't like but there is one favorite that i do think will go all the way to the finals i bet them at plus 185 to win this out that's alabama okay betting regions is probably a good way to go to like betting the final four so I have Alabama coming out of the South at plus 185. Jesse, what did you have
Starting point is 00:54:21 there? One team I really like is Kansas, and I think Steve, Kansas should be your team. Why? Because of their star player. You're going to absolutely... James Reimer? No, you're going to absolutely love their star player. Who? His name's Grady Dick.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Let's go, James! Dick can shoot, guys. The problem is when Dick doesn't shoot, they got big problems. Rectile dysfunction. and that's the problem with kansas it needs to be on fire and really hit anyway he's a great basketball player i'm fortunate name relying too but i don't know what's happening here but he is actually a really good yeah he's a great player they're they're a good bet to reach the
Starting point is 00:55:03 final four like get decent odds on that but yeah steve i think you should be rooting for kansas and grady dick grady dick listen all this analysis aside which team is named after the fiercest bird that's a good question that's a good question i know maybe the jayhawks oh i don't know if a jayhawk's a fierce bird yeah like i i party with these guys in vegas they're usually 350 pound guys wearing windbreakers from 1982 so i wouldn't think the jayhawk he's more of a drunken bird i think it's the type of guy you'd like to go birds had a keg party that's the guy i want to party with and do funnels okay jayhawk okay well i want the team with the fiercest bird to win okay that's a good question that's a really good question in the interim i'm gonna go
Starting point is 00:55:51 with grady dick i don't know what a paladin is but there are paladins uh is that a bird oh furman it's funny you guys mentioned furman and out of the game i actually like them to cover the spread versus virginia in game one a paladin i think it's like a diamond or something anyway what about the creighton blue jays six seat cheap cheap cheap a lot of people like creighton we like the toronto blue jays that's right so fellows so we do like creighton and i have them winning a couple games i uh know who i like though guys out of the midwest texas let me explain i know you guys like kansas but texas at plus 350 on sports interaction i think that's a very good bet they played kansas the last two games and beat them by a combined uh 36 points his team's hot they had
Starting point is 00:56:37 some coaching controversy earlier on in the year the kids don't care chris beard's gone doesn't matter watch out for texas i have them to win the midwest at plus 350 okay team now before we wrap it up it might be this one guys it might be this one i think i found the fiercest bird the iowa hawkeyes oh let's go iowa yeah he's a pretty is a golden eagle stronger than a hawkeye i don't know i don't know i don't know that's an eagle that's tough i have no idea but you get a three you need a varmint rifle to get a three-star golden eagle that's right uh you guys want me to give you some like i just have some regional picks give it to us liars if you want okay i got alabama to win the south at plus 185 i like marquette through in the east at plus 450 with a sprinkle on the
Starting point is 00:57:21 memphis tigers see that's a fierce cat 12 to 1 west we're going with actually the team everyone loves except for this year gonzaga at plus 425 i also like tcu is a crazy dog at 10 to 1 in the west and texas plus 350 alabama to win it all at seven to one cam thank you so much for joining us today it's such a pleasure to have you on again and we're gonna have to do this a little bit more because i know the masters are coming up but jesse desperately wants let's go but also enjoy march madness and it's uh great to have your show back man we're we're we're pumped to have you guys back and and doing more picks on the network we appreciate love my boy camera two drew steve and watch casey dick light it up baby let's go let's go dick and here's what you
Starting point is 00:58:04 need to do go to sports interaction.com you can check out the march madness bracket it's free to play we're all doing ours and steve get your angry birds let's go fierce absolutely it's gonna be a lot of fun so um you know one of the things that uh unfortunately made the rounds uh yesterday on the internet was a video allegedly because as of this recording the identity is yet to be fully confirmed of danny briere's kid danny briere new general manager of the philadelphia flyers uh pushing a wheelchair downstairs at a bar now allegedly the story is that someone who was using that wheelchair had to be carried down to the bar's bathroom uh and was using it apparently and at least this is this is what is alleged again if the story is completely wrong i
Starting point is 00:58:54 apologize none of this has been confirmed uh but um uh but i guess while they were down there you know this person if it was danny brayer's kid uh pushed the wheelchair down the stairs thought it was funny walked away drunk stupid that sort of thing yeah now the reason we keep saying allegedly by the way is like i don't know this person who tweeted it right and and and the reality is the The school replied to the person who originally tweeted this out, which is Julia Zukoski and Mercyhurst University, which is Breer's second university, which is relevant to this story, if it in fact is him. A statement from Mercyhurst University late this afternoon, Mercyhurst University became aware of a disturbing video in which one of our student athletes is seen pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs at a local establishment. our office of student conduct and department of police are uh police and safety are investigating now i wonder if in the in that statement does that not confirm it i would one of our student
Starting point is 00:59:55 athletes is seen pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs they seem to confirm it yeah and if you look at it i mean it's it's difficult to deny right uh and i don't think anybody was um but i think uh i think there's a there's a bigger story here and obviously that sort of developed because um people don't realize this uh uh the younger breer was already kicked out of another school for partying too much asu yeah which is a big one and it's do you have the quote carson breer yeah because he doesn't seem very remorseful about the asu departure so this is from uh college hockey news.com the anthony anthony uh travel lag travel gear i'm sorry and gargano show no i know uh here's the anyway they wrote an article about this and i'm going to pick
Starting point is 01:00:45 and pick and choose quotes from the article i've pulled all the quotes that i could uh when asked about um what was going on in arizona he said i was just going out i wasn't taking hockey seriously it wasn't anything bad it was just not being committed to hockey i was more committed to having fun at school um too much partying that's probably the best way to put it so that's carson briere uh when uh and then the article goes on to say when briere got to arizona State. The Sun Devils were coming off their fourth season as a Division I program and their first NCAA tournament appearance. While his brief tenure in Tempe surely did not go as planned, the experience was a lesson in life and one that still sits with him today. He said,
Starting point is 01:01:21 it made me realize once you get to this level, it's a job, right? It's not just something you do for fun. Obviously, you have fun while you're doing it. And I think that's what keeps people going. But also knowing when to and when not to do things, it's just maturing in general. i honestly think it was a great lesson for me helped me become more of an all-around hockey player and look at life from a different perspective and um as of this article and i feel bad for this article in retrospect but i thought this quote was this part of the article was poignant the last sentence and it says briere should be feeling good he's making the most of his second chance now he's 24 this is not a kid 24 oh wow now i'll be honest with you we know now
Starting point is 01:02:02 that the human brain stop stops developing around age 25 uh that's but and i can see that i can i remember myself at 24 we were on this podcast at 24 i thought i was so smart boy dumb we were very dumb not not very intelligent and part of that's life experience but i think what people were so upset about it's it's it's not that hard at any age to know that pushing somebody's mobility aid aid down some stairs is a bad idea and obviously i don't know that people realize or understand um how difficult it is to a get a wheelchair made and b get one made to the specifics of your uh of your abilities or what your needs are and and steve you got direct experience with this well yeah because the cherry push down the stairs is very similar to the one my sister used
Starting point is 01:02:54 and uses uh and it's what what i didn't like is the idea that no one was hurt um you know what i mean uh and it's true like no one was physically harmed physically harmed well no one was in that he did not push a person down the stairs right right but this isn't the same as throwing any other random object down the stairs the person who supposedly as the story goes the person it already took a certain amount of courage to go to that bar right because you know you're going into a bar it's packed with like we can see in the video that it's packed um it can't be easy or fun to maneuver a wheelchair even if you have someone helping you do that and when you go to a bar you might have even had to call ahead of time to be like hey what's your bathroom situation like
Starting point is 01:03:57 and then you find out the bar uh the bathroom is downstairs which that's i wouldn't think twice about it lots of places you go the bar uh the the bathroom is downstairs but that's that's like a ordeal for you and like you have to go with a friend and just to go to the bathroom they gotta help you down the stairs help you into the bathroom i don't even want to i don't i don't even know what uh goes on when you have to get to the toilet part right so it already takes courage to go about your night and have everything go smoothly and not everything goes smoothly because this dude threw your wheelchair down the stairs like i don't know if the thing was destroyed it looked like a couple parts came off i saw the the foam seat cover which is usually
Starting point is 01:04:49 like velcro or whatever um oftentimes they're finely tuned to the specific person too yes yes because it's not um we think about disability in terms of um everything is is very uniform and it's super not everything is is very specific so you're not throwing any random object down the stairs you're throwing down this person's uh mobility you're throwing down this person's dignity uh basically you you yard sailed that poor girl's night the the instant that happened first of all someone's got to lug that fucking thing back up the stairs uh then they have to go get their friend and then does the thing even work if the wheel is dented if this if that uh you're kind of screwed as it pertains to carson briere um because we're now relatively sure it's
Starting point is 01:05:47 him i'm and i'm trying to figure out how to word this i'm less concerned with the actions of a drunk student and more concerned with the endorsement of sober people on twitter and what do you mean specifically in terms of the tenor of tweets that you're talking about well like okay i think there's a fine line between um you know this isn't the end of the world and this is fine like i i saw i saw like dude this i don't i don't know why some people have this instinct to instantly jump to carson's defense let's not cancel carson um because this isn't a big deal it is a fucking big deal and i think uh a big part of the problem is people don't take the time to understand or even care about disability and i think a lot of that comes
Starting point is 01:06:48 from parenting i think a lot of that comes from uh it's just sort of this hushed up thing and student-athleting yeah i think i i think that uh what's the what's that thing for friday night light side or or is it one of the movies i saw it's like oh i don't go to school i play football you know what i mean there's that there is i think student-athletes uh certain student-athletes for sure uh have a different experience than the rest of just an average person average student that sort of thing yeah the expectations are different um the grades are different the way they're graded is different you know what i'm saying they're treated like all-stars from a young age and i'm not saying a pedestal 100 and i think i think my dad's the gm of the flyers sure and and
Starting point is 01:07:32 i don't know i don't know carson so it's impossible for me to know what he's like personally all i can go is what i read in that one article and what i saw on the screen and it's not great and i i think i think they're what's it what is the the tweet i saw the most sounded like this it was um what you never did anything stupid while you were drunk does that make so okay so that's cool but like so that so we give that a thumbs up then like oh okay then oh you know what i hadn't thought about it the the like the boys will be boys kind of reaction doesn't take into consideration uh people with disabilities who see a video like that and then their reaction is oh this is what this person in society thinks about me yeah and like they don't even consider the all the uh
Starting point is 01:08:19 background work that goes into me just having this chair and the everything you outlined about getting down the stairs and the courage it takes to get to the bar and it's like oh like my my place in society is it's so much lower than it was like seconds before i saw this video like that's you think of me inclusion because i think what a lot of people probably came away with is fuck it i just won't do it which i i think a lot of people would probably a lot of people in that situation would probably do anyway and and like i want to be clear he did a stupid fucking thing i think you were pretty clear well yeah he did it but i think you're worried about you're worried about what your point is is you're worried about the amount of people jumping to his defense yeah without
Starting point is 01:08:58 knowing that knowing him and not and not even taking a second to understand that um that somebody's wheelchair is oftentimes not only just a part of their mobility but part of the identity well it's part of it's it it is an extension of them and and their life and assuming the best in people i'm assuming he regretted it without being told um that's that's an assumption i don't know that i'm assuming he regretted it without being told i assumed there was a little bit of fuck i got too drunk and that was really stupid that's that's what i'm hoping with him i assume he is going to apologize i assume he is going to do right by this person sort of penance some sort of penance like like i it already seems like the school is going to reprimand him in some way
Starting point is 01:09:42 i assume he is going to make it up to the girl in some way shape or and hopefully do maybe community service or something like that yeah something something yeah like i this does he doesn't need to be a leper i'm not i'm not saying that but what i'm what what concerned me was just i don't understand why he needed defense he didn't there's nothing to defend yeah at all like why why do you feel the need to defend him and not like my reaction to that is oh my god i feel so sorry for anybody who is in a wheelchair who watches that and their reaction to it yes like you know cancel culture you canceled her whole fucking night you canceled like her whole next day like think of what a pain in the ass it is and a lot of people listening right now i've had to deal with
Starting point is 01:10:32 this think of what a pain and in the ass it is and how much it affects your life when your car breaks down like even even something really routine fuck now you gotta find a way home and you probably gotta find a way to work and you gotta find a rental car and you gotta do this and you gotta do what if it's your fucking it's your it's moving it's an extension of you right and i just think a lot of people don't understand that and when it when i said the the parenting thing again because like i had a laundry list of questions when i was a kid and they were answered immediately because rachel is my sister and her parents were my parents and i would simply ask her parents who are my parents the questions that i had i think kids have questions um
Starting point is 01:11:23 quote unquote normal kids have questions about different types of disabilities and they can be brash about it there's there's lots of um there's a lot there's tiktoks you know basically poking fun at the fact that kids have no filter sure and no uh uh decorum right and you know they'll just ask an awkward question out loud but i think what a lot of parents do is they go don't don't ask that and those kids turn into teenagers who turn into adults who don't know anything right so they see a a jackass johnny knoxville style moment and they're just like lol chair down the stairs right or they see that video and they go well it's it's not a big deal the person wasn't in it but the person doesn't have to be in it for it to completely fuck up their
Starting point is 01:12:14 life for the next, however long it takes. And like, like think of how hard, how hard was it for you to get a truck? Oh, it took me six to eight months. Right.
Starting point is 01:12:24 Cause shit's on back order right now. And in general, right. This equip, this custom equipment takes forever and it's expensive and it's hard to get and people give you the runaround because it's hard to get. you know i'm just i'm just going from uh my experience which is still as an observer right i'm not rachel right so i don't i don't get to uh assume her identity by you know saying no
Starting point is 01:12:54 but you're i know the plight you've watched it up close steve that's the point yeah right nobody's nobody's saying that you use a wheelchair regularly no we all know but like i and like this i assume she's going to be taken care of in relatively short order because this is like a high profile incident now right like it went viral on social media but how many aren't what if it wasn't exactly what if it wasn't then then we're talking you know weeks and months where you're like how do i how do i go to the fucking bathroom how do i make myself food how do i go about my day like i i think you know people i think a lot of things we we could be here all day yeah how was your first reaction not sympathy for the person whose chair that was yeah and then for this
Starting point is 01:13:42 the physical disabled community like how was your how can i be honest my first reaction wasn't that uh and the only reason is because my first reaction was what a fucking moron right that was my instant reaction was in there my whole that was i i wish i had gone to empathy first uh for the person's jesse because i would be a better person and i'm i i hate to admit that i'm not but i'm like this fucking idiot my every time you're at a bar on a saturday night you could say that about somebody there of course that was a that was a fucking idiot move and and by the way just because you did drunk stupid shit in college doesn't mean it wasn't stupid like you think i didn't yeah we all yeah we all did drunk stupid shit and that's the thing it was stupid but this
Starting point is 01:14:21 person is squarely in their mid-20s and knows better and i and i my hope and assumption though is his reaction was what a stupid fucking idiot yeah when he saw the footage yeah yeah well jesse i think i think you make a you know i think when you say um you feel bad like again i guess you know i wish i was a better person but i just my thoughts went right to him and go like how did none of his friends go what the fuck are you doing man like well yeah get better friends too so i think you see the video because i want to say i'm not 100 sure on this but i think the context for the video like this wheelchair belonged to a person that person was downstairs that person was then stranded downstairs until someone had to help them up i think
Starting point is 01:15:11 you know maybe you just i don't know what he assumed like this is just the bar's wheelchair in case someone needs it uh like i don't know even if it was but you you don't associate it as a person or an extension of a person i'm certainly not saying a wheelchair is a person but it's an extension of that person that's how they get around and but again because of this you know don't ask that i think that causes uh people to not associate those things and the reason we're talking about this is because it's carson briere daniel briere's kid and that side of it is is wild because this dude just became gm for you he's worked for eight years after he retired he he was up for the montreal job didn't get that he goes to the philadelphia it was within
Starting point is 01:16:02 the philadelphia organization works his way all the way up from the ech echl uh um gm role and now he gets to be gm of the flyers at the gm meetings four days after he's gm and then this happens dude i i've told the story before i got a speeding ticket when i was 18 on my way to my shift at the zoo and uh i told my parents that my shift ended at i think like six and this is the middle of the summer i clocked out i stayed and continued working for another two three hours till my boss found me and was like you can't just stay and keep go home and i was like i really don't want to man like so that's because i didn't want to get in trouble for the speeding ticket holy shit danny briere four days into an extremely stressful job thrown to the wolves at the gm
Starting point is 01:16:59 meetings and then i got a call because your dumb ass threw a wheelchair down the stairs and it went viral and now i gotta fucking deal with that yeah and would you want to go home and when he gets that call he's surrounded by 30 other gms who are just meeting him as their peer for the first time he's he's the if yeah if you can't find danny briere uh in the crowd he's the one with steam coming off of his head my hope so anyway we'll see how the story unfolds obviously um going forward here as of as of the recording anyway mercyhurst has not said anything else um all we know is that they are every time they are tagged they are untagging themselves so any any time that they are tagged in a tweet regarding the incident they are untagging their social media i think
Starting point is 01:17:48 you're fighting an uphill battle whoever's on that account no kidding no kidding so um another one that's been uh kind of brewing uh is um 32 thoughts made a an allusion to the philadelphia flyers and chuck fletcher and ivan proveroff and what the quote from the art from the 32 thoughts podcast from elliot that i wanted to bring up is the suggestion was that the chuck fletcher switch may have been sealed when ivan proveroff decided to boycott his team's pride jerseys and warm-ups um apparently that was a surprise um and he said basically uh comcast which owns the flyers majority owner of the flyers elliot said this you cannot surprise ownership like that from the moment that happened i think there were going to be consequences that's as far as he went
Starting point is 01:18:46 interesting and i don't and i'm from what i've heard anyway and what i've read alluded to comcast has never said anything but they were pretty pissed the other quote that i read i think we read different quotes from the same podcast was um the flyers would make a decision and then people would call around and text around the league from within the flyers organization to distance themselves from decisions that they disagreed with which just goes to show like it's wildly wildly dysfunctional it's just about everything we assumed it was well it's everything that that bobby clark interview was did bobby clark not do that oh he distanced himself from everything that happened under his watch while ron hextall was the general manager in an interview that's such
Starting point is 01:19:36 a great point because right now i bet there's people in the flyers organization like who the hell was doing that and who the hell leaked that and dude bobby clark did it publicly on a podcast you know the call's coming from within the house you got a problem and that's why i think uh chuck fletcher is the tip of the iceberg bit of a knives out situation there that's not good um i thought that was fascinating um uh i don't know if you saw this uh adam oates who is trevor zegras's agent was on uh kipper and born yeah adam oates is he's been like a skills coach he's been an agent but he's also been i think he's been a head coach for a bit too but he's been accused of this was a while ago now i'm gonna i'm gonna paraphrase the story mess it up but i
Starting point is 01:20:23 remember he was accused of no no no it's nothing bad uh there was there was a funny way to start there was a team that didn't like the fact that they were asking adam oats coached players to do certain things and adam oats would say no the team's wrong do it this way okay that was a that was a story now he was on real kipper and born he wouldn't be the only skills coach to do that by the way uh and he said there's a difference between instagram skill and skill he's got both so i'll give you the full one he yes he's a very talented man oh it said of his client this is the article from sportsnet.ca but for me personally there is a difference between instagram skill and skill and he's kind of got both and i'm trying to get the instagrams out of there he's scored
Starting point is 01:21:11 between the legs gold this week yeah he's great about it he's just like i can't help myself sometimes oats explained yeah he can do things i can't do and i never would have thought of and i get that um but i guess adam oats is trying to stop him or bring down a little bit of the instagram flash worthy parts of the trevor's egress game which to me is trevor's egress's game i don't understand why you can't do both like why can't you like be in position and then do the michigan like i don't understand well here's what he says he said you have a window of opportunity to make that play go ahead as of like really great players or plays otherwise make the right hockey play at that time last time i checked um and he's he's comparing this
Starting point is 01:21:59 to instagram last time i checked if you get 80 assists they're gonna like you as well so he's saying don't do the instagram thing to be liked do make the hockey play get a bunch of points and they'll like you anyway he's not like he's appealing to a certain crowd who just wants to hear this trevor zegras's most notable assist was the one he was criticized the most for what's he talking about that's why i brought this up because this is if this was my agent i'd be like can you shut up so he's not he's not his agent pat brisson is trevor's egress okay all right um he's adam oates is his skills skills coach okay my bad i would still say hey you're my skills coach shut the fuck up dude a lot of hockey guys talk and if you press them just a little bit everything
Starting point is 01:22:47 that they're saying falls apart because that's that doesn't make any sense why doesn't that make sense tell me why that doesn't make sense like it okay every flashy thing that i've ever seen ziegers pull off so i think he's done the michigan twice he did the dish again and he's done this between the legs he pulled off successfully because he had the window so what's the problem i don't understand like he scored a michigan i want to say against the coyote he scored a michigan against last year's habs he scored the dish again against last year's sabers and this year he did the between the legs goal against the seattle kraken of the goals that i just mentioned the kraken are the best team and he did it against grubauer so i think he's been
Starting point is 01:23:34 able to pull off these wild highlights because he's done it against crap teams like you do this against like the lightning or the bruins i'll be like holy shit yeah it's pretty cool yeah yeah that's a good point you were able to pull that off but like if you go back and look at some of the craziest highlights in nhl history you can find that players had the room because the team they were playing was out of position or wasn't very good or like go back and look at like how the fuck do you allow the ov behind the head goal you go and look i think it was brian boucher and net it's awful it's awful you should stop a rolling if you context that play it's embarrassing yeah like okay it's a cool goal that was coming at you at the speed of smell yeah and like i wish
Starting point is 01:24:23 i could remember the comedian that i heard the speed of smell from but like like dude the the beret uh goal on the breakaway where he tucks it back to his feet and kicks it back up to his that's a preseason game it's a preseason game and it's iconic i don't understand why america malik he was on the shootout there was no defense the greatest goal of all time why does zegras have to lose those things like he knows them like i know he has to work at them in order to keep them but like i don't know let him work on them just a little bit and maybe have more of a priority to defense or more of a priority to lay in the body or adamode sounds like he went on the radio every hockey guy and he appealed to a certain crowd and he said he said the crowd still listening
Starting point is 01:25:12 to the radio yeah he said what the radio crowd kind of wants to hear and he's just like they all that'll get me a bunch of thumbs up from the dads i said that as a person who currently holds a radio job by the way i'm just making fun of myself you know what's funny because we do the podcast together i sometimes forget that oh i think people don't i think people are always surprised i had uh i heard adam on tv will looper who's like a huge who's been a listener of ours forever from carolina like really good guy uh tweets back and forth and occasionally if i have a dumb canes take he doesn't you know hesitate let me hear it and uh and he's like he's like oh you're still getting up at 4 30 man i forgot about that like and it's oh i love every every
Starting point is 01:25:50 day visit toronto from out of town and they they'll see your face on a bus stop yeah and they go whoa and they'll take a picture and send it to us and we're like yeah we know yeah yeah yeah no he's on a morning show yeah it's it's weird there's two separate worlds right jesse you know that like when you were on it was like it's it's um the podcast audience doesn't cross over to the morning show and vice versa so you get so when i get dms i get two separate completely separate types of dms some like this this week it's like the oscars and uh the you know ryan o'reilly's broken figure like those are my dms right now it's bizarre um that could be our show that could be our show absolutely you listen to us on friday um uh people loved your how invested you were yeah
Starting point is 01:26:34 can i just say i just want to say something do you you really like movies eh movies are cool i like pop culture like i'm kind of invested in anything that's in uh in the mainstream pop culture thing i like pop culture but i i you don't like movies i don't give a shit about movies is that weird i still like going to the movie like me and my girlfriend we go to the movie theater quite often like once a month at least but i don't i feel like once a month is often like 12 times a year that's a lot but i feel like that's a lot for going to the movies best time to go to movies sunday night sunday night's the best because you start the week off right you have a nice sunday movie and then you go you go home and you're like wow what a great movie and you kick off the i like
Starting point is 01:27:10 the uh weekday one so like a tuesday at like 2 p.m and you go and you like get i don't know take out chinese food or something you bring it in you put in your backpack or whatever you bring in you eat it and then you watch a movie wow good time i'm gonna have to try oh you're stinky food guy oh yeah oh yeah i'm not buying movie theater food i'm gonna have to get and take out somewhere else and bring it that's smart because the options are surprisingly limited just stink up the whole theater hey man if there's sushi at the movie theater you know who's getting adam's getting by the way sushi does not stink no it doesn't because no if it did you shouldn't eat it um somebody i got a couple messages i just want you to know everybody makes fun of me for my
Starting point is 01:27:50 eat sushi and go to a hockey game thing uh but i have had a couple messages this month people going hey i'm going to see a hockey game for the first time since the pandemic what sushi restaurant do you go to because i'm going key now go to key and i just want to say i've started a movement sushi before hockey yeah but are they gonna get good service yes they are most of the time i don't know if jesse and i've ever told you what happened we did we talked about that we did yeah we did okay all right yeah i know they we got great service they didn't get into us in time for the game i just want that restaurant to know that was adam and jesse and i will be they don't sponsor the show they don't know exactly uh uh so the other thing please don't spit in my food a couple
Starting point is 01:28:30 other things the the calgary flames last night lost last night uh to the arizona coyotes this is the 10th time the flames have lost when out shooting an opponent by over 10 shots this this year that's a nhl record that is that is i don't know what you say about that i mean maybe sutter had a point when he said they can't score you know i think there was a no i don't think he puts his team in a position to score i think there was a time in analytics where we would have looked at that and we would have gone calgary flames most unlucky team in hockey they can't score they're getting shit goaltending. Their PDO is in the toilet.
Starting point is 01:29:10 Look for a big bounce back next year. And I think it's at a place where we now look at it and we go, they don't do the things that allow you to score. And their goalies for some reason stinks. Markstrom was one of the top three goalies in the world last year. And he's teetering on unusable. And he was that the season before last teetering on unusable. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:29:34 Yeah. He was pretty bad. His first year as a flame. Yeah, yeah, I, maybe he's one of those goalies, the Pecorines and the Sergei Bobrovskis where you're either a complete world beater or just poop. I would like to see this collection of players on the Calgary Flames underneath a new head coach. No.
Starting point is 01:29:57 That is something I would like to see before you change the collection of players. I would just like to see a different person in charge planning the games for these gentlemen. So, I don't really think firing Bruce Boudreaux made the Canucks better, but they decided this isn't our guy, we're going to go with Rick Tockett, let's get him acclimated right away. Fine, that's your decision, you made it, good, don't sit on your hands, make a decision. What are we doing here in Calgary? Like this so obviously doesn't appear to be the guy going forward, what's he still doing there? He is not the general manager's guy, he's the owner's guy and the owner likes him. That's what's happening.
Starting point is 01:30:36 The owner likes money. The owner doesn't like anybody more than he likes money. Yeah, you know what makes money? Playoff dates. Yes. Winning hockey team. Yeah. Maybe if you get rid of the head coach, you can get a playoff team.
Starting point is 01:30:46 Is he making your team better? Yes or no? If your answer is no, he's actively hurting your chances at a playoff spot, which makes you money, which means fuck him. I wonder. In business, that's what it means. As somebody with more knowledge than the three of us, if they could put together some sort of chart that's like uh a venn diagram or some sort of table that's meddling owners and like
Starting point is 01:31:11 their win-loss records and owners who just put people in charge and leave them alone and their historic record in in sports because i think the meddling owners are a lot worse than the ones who just kind of sit on the sidelines and are like and my money is gonna go up if i just let the people in charge do their thing then we we would need to uh uh subjectly objectively we whatever we would need to know who the meddling guys are which is really difficult yeah um i mean to me for the most part you look at the teams where it doesn't make sense that they're bad genux flames it doesn't make sense that those teams are bad um did you find it fascinating that Yusuf Alamaki,
Starting point is 01:31:58 who, you know, played 50 games for the Flames two years ago, who Sutter clearly did not like, who played, so he played nine games
Starting point is 01:32:07 last year, and this year, I believe, has over 20 points, 28 points in 64 games for the Coyotes. Do you find it funny that he's the guy
Starting point is 01:32:17 that sets up the, the last goal? I mean, funny, yeah, but also, we were talking about the Flames decor like it was the best in the league.
Starting point is 01:32:25 At the beginning of the season. And I think they've missed Shillington for a bunch. And I don't know about the miles on Tanev, but like they have a great core back there. You shouldn't be this middling. And they are, especially in a conference that's just not that impressive. And it's a team that,
Starting point is 01:32:44 that, that has put Milan Lucic on the first line, man, man. And apparently the Bruins looked at getting them back. Lucic. Yep. Lucic.
Starting point is 01:32:54 his hair out of 10 rate it his hair his hair oh did he dye it blonde again yeah the blonde look i think he brought it back i think it looks handsome with it i'm not gonna lie i think it looks good steve have you seen it 6.9 out of 7 like let's go he looks good he looks like every hockey player at our high school like come tournament time he looks like he could come out on monday night raw and smack it down on somebody he's got the dexter loomis hair he should consider that maybe when his career is done he'd be a good wwe guy he's big he's fun oh yeah he's got post career he's charismatic okay that i want to know has a former professional or even major junior hockey player become a wrestler should ask eric young become a wrestler you know
Starting point is 01:33:41 what you know what tell me he's not a tag team champion oh come on that's crazy some real tight trunks he looks good like he's a tight trunks guy yeah oh yeah power bomb as a finishing move yeah he'd be power bomb guy you know or like lex luger's torture rack yeah something like that hurt anybody i i hate the finishing moves that are just like oh that that wouldn't work at all if somebody did yeah hulk hogan's leg drop that did not look like people's elbow uh mr five knuckle shuffle mr socko probably wouldn't be that effective no no no but right santino's cobra deadly no
Starting point is 01:34:26 no the cobra is not affecting anybody i did like now you're down there was a wrestler who got like kicked off of the tv yeah basically because santino did the cobra to him and he oversold yeah like he was electrocuted incredible and i think he was on his way out so he's like fuck it i watching a youtube compilation of like oversells and wrestling is a good way to spend 20 minutes adam you need to go back and watch sean michaels alleged sabotage of his mask uh his match with hulk hogan oh why what happens basically him and hogan were supposed to have a a trio of matches against each other
Starting point is 01:35:16 um and they were both going to be baby faces for this so they're both good guys so it's just icon versus icon hulk hogan had this idea that nope one of us has to be face one of us has to be heel so michaels turns heel for no good reason and he oversells all of hulk hogan's offense to a crazy degree to the point where you see hogan looking at him like flopping around like what the fuck are you doing why why is he doing that because it's really funny oh no because he was mad about oh yeah you want to be the this huge hero fine i'm gonna make you into a hero i'm gonna make you an unstoppable monster even though he was like 60 when this match happened oh my god it can't happen it's summer slam yeah yeah no it's but it's it's yeah here it is here it is uh no
Starting point is 01:36:05 the video doesn't have any of the footage issues stills no he's like way out of shape like way past his prime like michaels could still really go and yeah he just oversells the shit out of all this guy's offense you know you know the fight scene in the irishman where everyone's like we don't believe that robert de niro beat this man's ass yeah it was like that but at summer slam okay that's fair enough uh a couple other things here guys uh andrej fechnikov will be out for the season with a torn mcl brutal brutal what does that do to the canes oh fucks him up pretty good i mean they're they're a team that is this a survivable thing i mean yeah they're a deep team they're a deep team they can uh you know win around maybe even two with this um and who knows
Starting point is 01:36:59 you know maybe the team you're playing loses a guy as well but they do struggle to score a bit for a team that is as high as they are in the standings like like uh i there was a quiz the other day on uh sportsnet at intermission and they said who's the top scorer on the hurricane Who leads the Hurricanes? I have no idea Sebastian Ajo Good guess, Brent Burns, good guess Nope
Starting point is 01:37:28 Svechnikov, nope Marty Nietzsche Marty Nietzsche That's a sharpshooter They're a little bit like Seattle where they get good consistent scoring throughout the lineup but they lack
Starting point is 01:37:45 kind of killers and he was one of theirs and uh boy that really hurts them offense tends to go down in the playoffs so maybe that helps defense tends to go up that's good for them but man that's a big blow you know this helps my new york rangers ticket for them to win the stanley cup it does and all of a sudden there's a little bit more incentive to bust your ass and get into that wild card spot i mean there always was but if you get the second wildcard spot you're just lining up to get slaughtered by the bruins you get the the the top one and you take on carolina i mean there's no guarantee it's even
Starting point is 01:38:26 carolina you know we might ah we're all dreaming of this new jersey rangers match in the first round but like here you you have the standings in front of you what's carolina's in first in the metro they got 96 points and the game in hand new jersey is in second they have 94 points new york's in third with 86 so new jersey could pass carolina it's a tight race we'll see how that that adds up yeah so it's it's two horse race for the top of the metro pretty unlikely pittsburgh or the islanders catch the rangers so the rangers are third they're going to be the road team against one of carolina or new jersey it's not another question that new jersey catches carolina uh rangers fans are a bit jumpy though i don't know if you notice this there's a little bit of
Starting point is 01:39:09 humpiness they play weird well the rangers play weird but um but patrick kane uh up until last night's game where he had a goal and an assist um you know had only three points in five games no i think we mentioned this briefly when like last week last friday or monday show they that line wasn't very good and they're not playing kane and panarin probably shouldn't be playing together because they don't play defense together uh and you can't have a line that that's wide that that's wide open um but i think rangers fans need to calm down because the point of this this trade wasn't for this to just work instantly the point of this trade is that when the second round in game five the series is going to be two two versus whoever they're playing it's lightning
Starting point is 01:39:55 or leafs or whatever it's going to be overtime and patrick is going to score a goal and then who gives a fuck about the regular season them not playing defense or who gives a fuck if you shitty in the games one through four all that matters that in that moment patrick and stepped up and he scored a goal and now it's three two in the series and they're up he's a deep that's what's gonna happen and we've we've talked about though that a lot of the biggest deadline acquisitions haven't had a good start with their team some of them are starting to pick it up like i think meyer's got points in a couple consecutive but like i think the most consistent producer out of deadline acquisitions i want to say is like max doby like he's he's done an unreal job
Starting point is 01:40:34 in Dallas. It's been weird like he wasn't even having that great of a season that all of a sudden he's on fire. The what we said Markstrom and Rene and Bobrovsky are to goaltending. Max Domi is to production like he is replacement level
Starting point is 01:40:50 or first liner. Yeah 72 points 20 to next year. You don't know why there's not much in between and but if he's the Max Domi that we all thought he would be when he was 2015 world juniors with canada or montreal when he signed the biggest yeah yeah that first year montreal is unbelievable that's what he looks like right now um and it was the
Starting point is 01:41:11 that trade was even weird in us in and of itself because the the narrative coming in into max domey's season was that he was going to be the only one to resign in chicago like oh he loves chicago they love him nope they're gonna bring him back throughout this whole rebuild max domey's gonna be the staple that's with the blackhawks and they're like nope let's get rid of him and then now he's on fire i mean maybe he comes back maybe um the jets were down last night three to one to the carolina hurricanes it ended up being a 5-3 loss uh they were down three to one midway through the second period and rick bonus decided to bench his top line that's shifley uh that's nita writer and that's kyle connor they had been on the ice for all three goals against
Starting point is 01:41:52 and after the game shifley and connor declined to even speak to reporters which i i have to tell you in winnipeg i don't know if you can get away with that in toronto you definitely cannot nino nido rider um said i mean we didn't deserve to play we simply weren't good enough we weren't engaged we weren't doing the job we were supposed to do we definitely deserve that um never understood that as a as a reporter what that they don't want to talk that's the story they were so bad that they didn't want to what do we think they're happy right they were so mad they didn't want to talk to anybody well also you still think people told the story wrong well i did yeah the whole thing you're supposed to write uh you're supposed to say uh tampa bay
Starting point is 01:42:31 lightning kucherov john cooper that's that's the correct story what's the correct story it just happened you guys they just tampa just did this this isn't fucking this isn't crazy they did like it's it's a one the one time thing the coach is trying to get in their heads fucking step it up we're going to the playoffs here boys like let's get it together here john copper cat league john cooper just did that the other coach the other nhl guy because they're all the the same five guys talk to each other he's like i'm gonna go bench my stars too you're right and honestly rick boness's hair is just 20 years older john cooper hair they have the same haircut only rick splits it down the middle you watch you go look go google it i'm telling you they have the same
Starting point is 01:43:11 hockey haircut they have hockey coach hair i do think it's very funny though that you you said the three players who were benched and then the only one who spoke was nino niederreiter because I look at that line and I'm like, well, one of these things is not like the other. Kyle Conner. Hey, El Nino is on a seven game point streak. No, no. Kyle Conner and Mark Shifley are far superior offensive players
Starting point is 01:43:32 and Nino is known for his two-way game that's actually both ways. Hey. David Camp is a great one-way player. You can play backwards. No, the second way is defense. That's the first way. No,
Starting point is 01:43:48 Oh, the first way is offense. He's a great two-way player, meaning he plays the second way. He's a great second-way player. Oh, there you go. There you go. Oh, there you go. All right. Okay.
Starting point is 01:43:56 Okay. We met in the middle. We have an accord. That's great. We met in the middle. He's a great second-way player. Settle on that. But like Nino, like...
Starting point is 01:44:05 We're such freaking morons, man. He's a great second-way player. Put it... Nino... Write it down. ...has always been a responsible two-way player. I don't know where he was on these three goals, so I'm not going to jump to his defense. but like connor and shifley i'm surprised don't get benched all the time well you can't bench
Starting point is 01:44:21 them you need to score goals you know what i think their problem is um is uh they're they have too much instagram skill and not enough that is a bizarre quote there needs to be more made of that the adam oats quote about zegras there it has to be more made of that i'm surprised anybody heard it it was said on radio oh hey it was also shared on social media and at sportsnet.ca It's a great two-way platform. Internet and radio. Before we get to the press conference, the Toronto Six are taking on Connecticut.
Starting point is 01:44:54 Game one is the 17th of March, game two, 18th, and game three, the 20th. All at the Mattamy Athletic Center this weekend for the Isabel Cup. So just, it's the Isabel Cup semifinal. Oh, no way. You can get tickets.
Starting point is 01:45:06 They're 10 bucks, guys. I didn't know they were in a semifinal. I know, I know. So just- Part of the problem. Just want to say go Six. Go Six. let's do the press conference pay your 10 for six the presser s d p the steve dangle press
Starting point is 01:45:22 conference all right jesse um on friday we're gonna have a special guest adam can you explain who that oh yeah tim haraney from our brand new podcast nailing the apex if you're a formula one fan uh tim was in line to be a formula one driver and uh he's canadian and his story is fascinating we're going to talk about a little bit. I'm not going to ruin it for you, Steve, but we're going to talk to him a little bit about what happened after his formula career was over and why it ended. But he was in the Renault system, Renault being the Alpine cars, talent scouted, went over to Europe, raced there. And that's where you truly develop into a race car driver. And Tim has done a podcast. He's part of the TSN group on television. So you'll see him doing
Starting point is 01:46:11 sports center and stuff like that but um he's a fantastic mind when it comes to motor racing and it's not just formula one it'll be indycar as well but we know with drive to survive and all the success with that that that's sort of the gateway drug and then people go oh indycar is pretty cool too and so uh if you're into that sort of thing nailing the apex comes out three times a week before race weekend after race weekend and midweek but we're having tim on on friday because we're going to tee up a little bit of the grand prix and i wanted i want steve to hear this story because you still have not heard this story and jesse when we heard it he already he kind of talked about it a few podcasts ago it's pretty wild it's a it's a good one and and motor racing
Starting point is 01:46:49 is completely different than you know coming up in hockey right so i guess so there's a whole different way to do it steve can you give us the opening jingle that you made for us let's go cars all right first question this comes from barker 12 uh i thought it was a very good question um the last the leafs last home game is saturday april 4th against the habs that's it do you put wayne simmons in the lineup for what could be his last professional nhl game oh they're 100 gonna do that yeah so i guess it's a two-parter we're all kind of in agreement that simmons is retiring after april 4th or wherever the playoff run ends that's certainly my assumption you know i was gonna say oh maybe his career could continue with the marlies no if that was
Starting point is 01:47:41 the case i mean he could have reported there this year and he didn't so i think didn't he play a couple games i don't think he did no none at all okay oh okay i don't think yeah but we all think yeah let's get him in the lineup that's actually a great point it was weird to see uh the leafs line rushes this morning where they still have the 11-7 setup yeah but with him as an extra yeah yeah um skate the rush by the way apparently jay wood woodcroft rode the 11-7 to the conference finals last year with edmonton uh or at least partially oilers fans were reaching out after the last show and they're like oh that actually does work if you've got the talent and the leafs do have the top end talent i don't remember i guess i guess i don't because i
Starting point is 01:48:26 taking their word for it i don't know i watched a lot of that uh colorado edmonton series is that simmons hockey db it is yeah so he's never played an ahl game yeah no never in his career you're right about that damn isn't that wild like straight from junior as a second i'd like to see him get one more goal oh of course i had no goals this year he was close remember that uh game early in the season you almost had one yep he's had a few pretty good plays this season i i think uh no he's gonna get fed the puck all night all right put him on the top keep that on your radar least fans it could be wayne's last game ever in the nhl coming up uh this one is from clearly a bot clearly a bot on our discord press conferences channel thread thing has a very high
Starting point is 01:49:10 good questions per 60 uh yeah they do always asking good questions do you think cars should come with two types of horns one that is loud and aggressive and a second that is softer for general reminder yes that is actually such a good idea right that would probably be awful in practice there should be well there should be a hey you're on your cell phone and it's a green light yeah the light changed and then there's the what the fuck are you doing horn that's what you should have alert yeah exactly i know people with teslas can change their horn to whatever they want I've seen TikToks like that While they're asleep
Starting point is 01:49:48 Because they don't drive That's wild Some guy changed his horn Oh yeah Like that He's driving down the road That's so distracting That's not what we want
Starting point is 01:50:05 I don't know if that's a good idea But you don't think this would be a good idea No The mini horn for just like hey No but it's almost like encouraging road rage because no because i think oftentimes you hear a horn it's not necessarily you get your neck up you're like what what's going on yeah what's going on or if you earn it you're like yeah oh yeah that was me but if there's a very if there's a distinction then there's the
Starting point is 01:50:34 pleasant horn and you go thank you thank you friend but then you get the angry horn you're like hey fuck off and now all of a sudden it's an incident it's doubly it hurts even more because you know it's the angry horde they went out of their way to press that one towards you also what if you're a driver on the road and it had nothing to do with you but you hear the angry horde and you go what was that and then all of a sudden you're looking beside you and your rear end the car in front of you um on monday i know i'm thinking about this like an insurance company but i'm thinking about that too monday morning uh i was driving to work and it was probably like i don't know 545 or something like that and i'm driving down richmond and um i hear this just
Starting point is 01:51:14 like loud beep and i look to the side because you always look right and a a little car pulls up and they're sticking their middle finger at out at me at big time and i'm like okay i drive a truck so they so i might have done something stupid i assume my automatic assumption is that it's me and i sort of had an out-of-body experience because it was such an aggressive fuck you that i was like i was like holy shit and then i looked inside the car and it was jacked Michael, but I was like, I didn't show it. I was like, what did I do? And I felt terrible and whatever.
Starting point is 01:51:44 If that had been like an angrier horn, I might've driven off the road. So you're right in practice. It might be, it might not be, it might not be the greatest. It's a funny comment. I like the comment. Let's not do it. I think it's a good idea. I, cause I, I don't like doing, uh, the horn for like when I'm saying, thank you.
Starting point is 01:52:03 I like putting my hand out and waving. So I'll, I'll do that. so i would like a horn that i can just tap and be like thank you i was thinking about it because apparently in japan um as a thank you um for uh like if you're trying to get in and instead of doing the wave which we do you know right hand so you can see it through the back window that's what we do they do they just press the uh emergency light for just one press that's a great idea except it's not because what if someone's actually using those lights well then it would go for a more than one press yeah but then how often do you see both lights in traffic and maybe you think
Starting point is 01:52:45 oh this person's coming over now oh they're not or whatever i just think it's i'm thinking about this like an insurance company innovation don't do it steve stop stop making me don't innovate i'm steve i want everything to stay the same so i get it i do not sound like that no you know what society stays the same i'm gonna be happy i'm steve dangle let's not go to space because what if it's bad no you know what correct steve also thinks we never went to space oh yeah why was the flag blowing that is a weird question sometimes there are innovations for instagram sometimes there are innovations for instagram and sometimes there are innovations for real life We're trying to get the Instagram out of that
Starting point is 01:53:33 Out of the innovation By the way, Adam, Jesse and I Recently discovered that we use the exact Same length of stick We didn't recently discover that The three of us have the same hockey stick Because we got it for free I have the same one
Starting point is 01:53:48 But you and I are about the same height Jesse has like 6-7 inches Jesse should probably get a bigger stick no no no some of us have better flexibility than the other two so all right i don't need it all right i mean that's your choice there was a dude in hockey who was even taller than jesse and his stick looks like a pole vault yeah yeah i think um by you know because you know how you're supposed to have your stick up to your nose or whatever it is on on uh um zidane ochara wasn't allowed to do that because there's a maximum length in the nhl so his stick was always smaller than his
Starting point is 01:54:22 body proportion should have been because he was so freaking tall on skates. But they couldn't allow him to have a bigger stick. Why did you bring this up? I don't know. Yeah, why did you bring this up? I'm trying to end the show. I don't remember. Alright, I guess we'll
Starting point is 01:54:38 play the out music. Anything else you'd like to add, Steve? Where should we go now? Why did we start talking about this? Wayne Simmons was drafted second round in 2007. Cool. And I think that's nuts.
Starting point is 01:54:56 Play the music. S-T-P The Steve Dangle Podcast Powered by Sports Interaction. Want to bet? Follow the guys on Twitter at Steve underscore Dangle at Adam W-Y-L-D-E
