Backhanding.
Woo!
S-D-P-P.
The Steve Dangle Podcast, with your hosts, Steve Dangle, Adam Wild, and Jesse Blake.
Let's go!
Okay, listen. I know Luke Shen got in a fight and scored a goal last night.
Sensational!
Oh my god, I was screaming Gordie Howe.
Yeah, he didn't get the assist, though.
It's trash.
I wanted him to have a Gordie.
But can we really start the show today without mentioning how the Penguins absolutely fucking blew it last night?
So this is one of those lovely topics.
No offense, Penguins fans.
But this is one of those lovely topics where I see it develop, but I'm working as it's developing.
Sure.
And I go, I can't wait for story time on the podcast tomorrow
Where I find out how they fucked this up
Okay, so first off, you need to know this
The Penguins go into the last game
This is game 80, okay?
81
No, this is game 80
No, it's 83
Okay, you're right
It is game 81
It is game 81
Because there's two left
You're right
You're right
You're right
You're right
I only know that because we talked about it
They go into game 81
They're playing the Blackhawks, and their destiny is in their hands.
You have the Florida Panthers, who are four points ahead of them.
You have the Islanders, who are one point ahead of them.
And if the Pittsburgh Penguins can just beat Peter Barazic and the Chicago Blackhawks,
they are, no matter what, in control of their own destiny.
Because even if the Islanders, who play the Canadians tonight, won a game,
then the Pittsburgh Penguins would still have the game in hand to win and get in.
You just need four points, two wins in a row, and you're in the playoffs.
And if the Canadiens somehow pull a rabbit out of a hat and beat the Islanders, you're set.
It's not going to happen, but...
I mean, the Isles had a non-playoff team in Washington, and they got friggin' wiped.
Yeah, and that's the reason that Pittsburgh was in this position.
The best part about this is you get to see a non-Leafs team go down in flames twice.
Because not only did the Pittsburgh Penguins lose 5-2,
but the chicago blackhawks lessened their chances of getting conor bedard yes by 6.5 percent yes
they they jumped two spots in the standings by winning that game and the score was really 3-1
because uh the last the last one the second goal was with the the goalie pulled after the blackhawks
already scored an empty netter and then there was another empty netter tacked on so it's really
three to one but if there's anyone to blame for this entire scenario it's peter marazic
he was saved unreal 38 saves it's he's one of the most confusing goalies i've ever watched
he can be spectacular he can be absolutely he made some real good saves there's a lot of people
to blame overall in this whole situation ron hextall's one of the the big people to blame here
uh tristan jari uh allowed a bad goal to uh athena see you um that was the the the i believe the
second goal of the game the one that put them up 3-1 um he wasn't great he hasn't he hasn't been
great for a while i don't have numbers to back this up but no good goalie with the the quality
of numbers that tristan jari has allows more bad goals he's he's confusing too he's incredibly
confusing that whole team is confusing i know i know you haven't seen it so it was it was a goal
where he he overplayed the goal and that he he ended up he pulled a morassic he pulled a tristan
jari in this situation and he ended up at the side of the net and anathese anathese a fantasy
fantasy was behind the goal line and batted the puck twice and put it in the net so here's the
other thing uh the penguins are on a 16 year playoff streak okay okay crosby and malkin have
played in every single game this year all 80 wow that has not happened i don't think they've ever
done that both of them same season yeah no sydney i don't think it's ever happened 91 points so if
i told you before the season started that you're gonna get every game out of crosby every game out
amalkin you make the playoffs in a walk which would you think right here's so it's our old
friend mark madden you remember him yeah he uh he wrote an article and i thought it was actually
kind of fascinating because there was the fire hextal chance in the in the stadium uh last night
uh and he said hextal has done an awful job and he should be terminated and will be but hextal
wasn't on the ice he assembled a flawed team but not so flawed that there's any good excuse for
losing to the blackhawks a team that needed a better chance at drafting conor bedard the
blackhawks chances of winning the bedard lottery went down oh excuse me i was wrong in the
percentage the blackhawks chance of winning the bedard lottery went down from 25.5 to 13.5
100%.
I blame Buddy Robinson.
Yeah, that's bad.
That's bad.
And that's wild.
Here's the thing.
The Penguins have got to take a good hard look at whoever's in charge,
whoever's the coach, whoever's the GM.
They've got to take a good hard look at what this team is.
And Mark points it out in this article.
Penguins fans have been talking about this all year.
This is a slow team that thinks it's fast, and it plays a fast style, and they're not fast anymore.
They're not a fast team anymore.
They're old.
Well, yeah, but their best players are old.
Like the players who are performing the best are older.
Are old.
But you've got to amend your style to that.
I don't think that's necessarily the problem.
I think they used to build the team around Sidney Crosby,
and now it's Sidney Crosby and his band of merry men.
Do you see the difference?
It's just a collection of dudes around him.
They don't have an identity is what I'm saying.
They don't play a certain way.
Well, they play slow, and they don't hit.
That's not an identity.
It's a flaw.
Right?
And the thing about last night was that Sidney Crosby was unreal.
Yeah, he was great.
He is unreal.
He had eight shots.
He was all over the net.
Peter Mrazik stopped him.
There's like four really good chances that Peter Mrazik just really made great saves.
And Malkin was great as well.
But there's nobody else on the team besides those two.
And it's been like that for a while.
And Penn's fans have been screaming that this team has sucked.
And Rob Rossi in The Athletic wrote about the game, obviously.
And then he put some numbers in there that I thought were fascinating.
One was that versus playoff teams this season, the Penguins are 16, 23, and 5.
That's a 420 save percentage.
And they still can make the playoffs.
So if they do make the playoffs, Jesse, how will that week go?
It's going to be about four games.
And then so that's the number versus playoff teams.
since december 20th the penguins are 21 22 and 6 that's a 490 points percent they've been bad for
a long time pence fans who've watched this team closely have noticed it that this has just been
trending downwards since december and now it's all finally come to a head where you have a must
win game versus a bottom two team in the national hockey league and you can't close it out you know
if you're going to fail,
you fail quickly,
right?
There are teams that don't know how to fail quickly in this league.
I had to give a couple of teams that do the Washington capitals.
We're going to punt this year.
We had injuries,
blah,
blah,
blah.
The St.
Louis blues,
really smart.
Watch for the St.
Louis blues to make a quick turnaround.
They've got great young players.
And I think they're going to,
I mean,
they were in on a few players at the deadline that,
you know,
like Timo Meier among them,
they want to do a quick turnaround and you can do that.
If you catch it in time,
if you catch the falling knife in time,
the penguins are on the verge of not being able to catch it in time they still have malcolm they
still have latang they still have crosby i get that but it's not malcolm latane and crosby 10
years ago it's now and they got to figure out how to get this team some speed and some identity
and it can't be from uh you know pushing guys in the in the corner just a little bit it's got to be
from from top to bottom this is what we are and everybody subscribes to this i i'm gonna say
something i never thought i would say like maybe they should have just done the jt miller thing
i you know what i actually the more i think about it the the more i think they need a d'artagnan
right they need a they need a phil kessel like they need that that third guy a guy third guy
is gonna rack up a stack of points so i'm just looking at it let's ignore their off season which
petri for matheson is not looking great but let's ignore that let's go to right around the trade
deadline they trade teddy bluger to free up some cap space that doesn't make you better um it just
gives you the ability to acquire okay well if we're going to acquire let's acquire let's get
some good players they get mikhail grandland at five mil for a second round pick they have the
most complicated and somehow meaningless three-way trade in NHL history uh with the Habs and Sharks
where they get Nick Bonino and it's not 2017 I think they were setting up to move Jason Zucker
with that trade I it kind of looks incomplete doesn't it and their big ad on the back end is
Dmitry Kulikov like that's none of that moves the needle JT Miller was the focus and I think they
needed to move Zucker and they couldn't find somebody to do it for their price and that and
If they have JT Miller, they're in the playoffs.
Yeah, I think so.
My criticism of JT Miller has never been that he's a bad player.
He's not a bad hockey player.
There were times where he was lazy.
Yeah, underperforming his potential.
And I tell you what, Rick Tockett has turned him into one of the most dangerous shorthanded players in the NHL.
Him and Pettersson are deadly shorthanded.
They are.
it's unreal peterson who had 100 points by the way uh yesterday exactly so will that carry in
the next season i don't know i don't know we're not talking about the canucks right now we're
talking about the the pittsburgh penguins uh i don't think it's a hard sell to get guys to play
in pittsburgh and who'd they get well they you know when you when you don't get the deal done
at the deadline and this is a year that you need to compete you failed and i know there's a lot of
GMs are going, well, you know, some of that hard work,
that's got to be done at the draft.
No, that's next year's thing.
You might not be here next year.
And if your job was to win this year and make the playoffs this year,
and by the way, the Penguins still can.
We should mention that.
They're in win-now mode.
Yeah, they're in win-now mode every year, though.
So not making the playoffs squarely takes you out of win-now mode.
I want to tell you how this all breaks out, okay?
The Islanders currently have 91 points.
Florida's got 92.
Pittsburgh has 90, okay?
Each of them has a game left.
Florida is now in because Pittsburgh lost.
They clinched, yes.
Really?
If the Islanders lose,
so the floor doesn't know whether they're 7 or 8 yet,
but if the Islanders lose and Pittsburgh wins,
Pittsburgh will take the final spot in the final game, right?
If the Islanders win, Pittsburgh is out,
and the Panthers, with a loss, would then become the 8th seed.
So the Panthers also need to win their last game
because none of these teams wants to play Boston.
So if the Islanders win at all, they're in?
Yes.
Yes.
Not even win if they just pick up one point.
One point they're in.
They can OT lose.
Because I think they win on ROWs.
Yeah.
So they can OT lose and the Pens are out.
So last night was a disaster then.
Yes.
That was the whole point of this whole discussion.
Oh, I thought they could make up for it by winning this game.
So they went into last night with their destiny squarely in their own hands.
And they blew it against the Blackhawks.
They needed to win two games last night and then Columbus tomorrow.
Columbus tomorrow.
And if they just win those two games, they're in the playoffs.
A playoff team wins those games.
Then the Islanders just have to beat Montreal, who is playing Laval.
Literally two lottery teams that they were playing.
Yeah, the Pens had everything.
Did you guys see Greg Wyshynski tweeting out the photos of Fan Appreciation Night?
Was it Fan Appreciation Night?
It was Fan Appreciation Night.
No!
Oh, no!
In PPG Paints Arena, they brought the fans on the ice after the game
and gave them the jerseys.
And it is the most surreal moment ever
Are they all like sad?
They're smiling because they're taking pictures and stuff
But it's not a jovial moment
Jeff Carter does not look thrilled
Jeff Carter does not look thrilled
He's giving his jersey to a bowler hat guy
It is so much insult to injury
He looks happy
They're rubbing salt in the wounds
Jari looks okay, he's smiling
Jari's a jovial guy
Yikes
You know, Greg was tweeting
He's like, can you just call off fan appreciation night after that show?
Yeah, you should.
You didn't play like it.
I was so dumb as a kid.
I went to the last home game of the season once or twice
because people give those tickets away.
Adam and I, this weekend.
That's right.
Well, I would always get the free tickets to games
where people were like, ah, this game doesn't matter.
So when they started bringing fans onto the ice,
and I was a kid,
i still held out hope that someone would come and get me and bring me to the ice and i was like oh
my god i'm gonna get yannick perot's maybe me this is so sick it might be me there's and i'm
counting how many players are there i'm like there's still time yeah anyway so now i have a
toy dungeon well um so so now do you understand why losing last night like it's bad yeah yeah
So here's what we need.
Wow.
Here's what we need.
I don't give a shit about,
I think the Penguins are,
I think the Islanders are going to win against Montreal.
That's what I think is going to happen.
What I need is for the Florida Panthers
to beat whoever they're playing.
I didn't even look it up
because I need an Islanders-Boston series.
Yeah.
I need an Islanders-Boston series.
I've been banging this drum
and I'm not saying Boston's not going to win
in four or five games.
I'm not saying they will either.
It's not a guarantee.
But the Islanders are a playoff-built team.
They have one of the best goaltendings, team save percentage in the entire league.
They are smothering on defense, and they could score a little bit more now,
even though they don't have Barzal.
Having Horvat there, listen, do I think the Islanders are going to beat Boston?
No.
But I want, if I'm a Leaf fan, and I think the Leafs can get past Tampa,
and I do, I want Boston as gassed as I possibly can get.
In any seven-game stretch, Ilya Sorokin could win four games.
Absolutely.
They have a puncher's chance.
There's that.
I mean, a puncher's chance.
I love that.
I also just think the Penguins playing the Bruins is a horrible matchup.
Like, Florida, I think laser beating on Boston still loses fairly quick.
The Islanders probably still lose, let's be honest, but they make it a fight.
The Penguins get killed.
They get killed by the Blackhawks.
They get killed.
Oh, they're going to get destroyed if they get in the playoffs.
Well, like, you flip a switch once the playoffs start.
They need to get in the fucking playoffs.
But, like, I could see the Penguins, like, you know, at least playing Carolina hard.
I could see them playing New Jersey hard.
The Bruins kill them.
Oh, the Bruins are built to eat a team like the Penguins a lot.
Yes.
Like, thin on every position except for, you know, your star players.
No fight.
No physical presence.
Take it from a Leafs fan.
We've seen Leafs teams go into a series with Bruins like that.
They'll eat you up.
They'll eat you up.
I mean, 2019 taught us never, like...
Bet against the Penguins.
I get it.
Never bet against whoever the second wildcard team is.
Because Columbus and Tampa and all that.
One time.
I know it's one time.
One time.
And what did Tampa do after that, Steve?
uh they uh i don't i don't recall they went to three state cups so i think you know it's just
i just i can't picture a world where the penguins have any kind of impact on the 2023 stanley cup
so if the islanders win tonight and they beat montreal and the pens the pens will have still
game 82 versus columbus that'll be the first time in malkin's career where he plays the game that
has zero playoff implications because he's never missed the playoffs in his entire career wow
sydney crosby did it only in his rookie year because they were dog shit yes so this will
be the first time since sydney crosby's rookie year that he's gonna play a game that's meaningless
like they absolutely they royally fuck themselves yeah oh my god malkin's they're just not up to
2006 they're just not up to the task yeah they're just not up to it or it weren't last night they
could still get in and i would still tell you the same thing they're still not up to it right
like who knows if they even beat columbus well well man if the islanders win tonight
who cares could you imagine if the islanders lose and then the pens lose to columbus yeah
oh can i imagine it yeah i get a man what a comedy of just terrible hockey though just
nobody really wants to nobody wants to play boston uh yeah i uh oh man like it's it's funny
The reason I'm being so hard on the pens and saying they're going to get killed.
And last episode, I called them soft.
Florida Panthers fans are like decently optimistic about their team.
You know, no, they, you know, this isn't the president's trophy winning team that you had last year, but they have some good parts.
And a really good back half.
Like their first half was kind of disastrous.
And now it's, they've really kind of turned it around.
Yeah.
That's the thing.
Yeah.
This is probably closer to what the Panthers are.
They're probably better than a top wildcard team.
except for the fact that they're in the atlantic so it kind of sucks but uh the islanders i think
we know they're better than this as well if they had barzal they'd certainly be better than this
penguins fans i think kind of hate the penguins right now oh yeah like they wear the jerseys and
they cheer for them it's like eastern vancouver yeah dude like they don't like which is why they
try to get jt miller they don't like anything to do with this team from what i've read the people
who cover the team yeah the people who buy tickets no one likes how this team is built
and they shouldn't on account of what are they what are you you can't just be crosby and his
band of merry men that's not a thing one thing that i also find inexcusable was how long they
rode casey to smith like i get that jari was injured right and you that's why you have a
backup goalie and that's who it was but there was no move earlier to just go get somebody else who
could hold the fort better than de smith tried to do like i think it was a 904 but uh his win loss
i think he's under 500 maybe what game under 500 and i wish x doll just made smarter moves earlier
on seeing how how this team was trending it feels like every trade has a question mark at the end of
it grandland we can we can do we've acquired mikhail grandlin yeah that's who the leafs
desperately wanted in 2019 yeah we've we got nick bonino like no we we got jt miller if you like it
great hop on if you don't fuck off this is a move yeah it's a trade ass trade now it's on the team
instead of just a bunch of but because they didn't make that big move because they weren't able to
pull that off um instead of looking at the roster construction the first thing everybody looks at
is Brian Burke and Ron Hextall.
Had they made the JT Miller move
and they're in the same position right now
and we're having the same discussion,
let's say that happened.
Everybody's going,
well, I mean,
what do you want Ron Hextall and Brian Burke to do?
The team's got to pull it together.
Yeah, that is the players.
And so by not pulling that off,
they failed themselves
and they may not get another crack at it.
Right?
I think Burke you will.
Yeah.
I don't know about Hextall.
The job of the president is much different.
I said this yesterday.
I'm curious about, like, sometimes you've got to look at resume, right?
And you look at Lou Lamorello, okay?
Man's like 83.
The last 10 years he's been in the league, most of those 10 years,
with the exception of the blip last year and the rebuild year in Toronto,
those teams are in the playoffs every year.
He's in the conference finals.
Yeah, he's signed some fucking bad deals, especially with the Leafs.
And they won anyway.
And they won anyway.
They won anyway.
And I look at Berkey, and I like Brian Burke.
I thought he was a spectacular guest on this show.
He wrote a great book.
He was fantastic at Sportsnet.
And he should be on ESPN.
Is Brian Burke's ethos about what makes a great hockey player and what makes a great hockey team, is that relevant anymore?
And I ask that because I look at the Penguins this year feel a lot like the Flames of three years ago, which was listless when Glenn Galutzin's throwing his stick into the freaking thing.
And then they're like, wow, we got to move heaven and earth to get our guy, Bill Peters, out of a very mediocre Carolina system.
I am questioning.
And then he turns out to be an awful guy.
Yeah.
Also that.
Also that.
He was always a stick in the mud.
He was always a big, like a fart.
Then he was worse.
Yeah.
He wasn't a good hire before we found all that shit out.
Yeah, he had no resume to back it up.
We talked about that on the show.
We're like, why do they want this guy?
Is that your man?
That's your man?
Yeah.
So I look at Brian Burke on this.
At least there was some success in Philadelphia,
and everything went to shit when Ron Hextall left.
Everything.
That team was still a playoff team.
I look at Brian Burke's record, and I go,
what have you done for me lately?
and not just lately what have you done in the last 10 years so here's my defense of brian burke
and it's not a good one um it's more a question mark than anything burke was gm in toronto for
a while uh and it was well documented we know exactly the kind of player he likes
do the penguins have any of them no right so that's why that's where i'm tremendously confused
like uh has he changed his mind he knows the game's changed though so i think his game's
i think his mind has changed a little bit but look who's successful like look at the bruins
look at the success that tampa has had look at uh colorado who is a tremendously skilled team
with a few guys who will tell you sincerely from the bottom of their heart to go fuck yourself
you know like nathan mckinnon and gabriel landis cog and i mean really underrated pickup was josh
manson yeah at the at the deadline are you are you giving blues in 2019 too much uh like i don't
know credit to brian burke for the roster like maybe it's ron hextall who's building the roster
because brian burke's the president right one guy is in charge of player personnel and then the other
guys in charge of overseeing the organization like we don't know how much brian has over roster
management i think the definition of um i think the job description for president changes from
team to team so i genuinely do not know how much blame lays at his feet and this is not me trying
to stick up for a guy who's been on the show uh like yes it is it definitely is listen ron
hextall was an agent provocateur and he was great but we're we're not criticizing their personalities
listen i don't know if you've ever seen my youtube channel i've criticized brian burke a fair amount
of times but uh if if we're gonna treat this the way we treat every other team
the team has not assembled a good group of players a cohesive unit of players a team that
has an identity and that falls at the feet of the gm to me yep it's also it i said this uh
yesterday it wasn't his hire they're hired simultaneously yeah i assume that burke had
some consultation probably you know i assume that's my when lemieux and the ownership group
were hiring burke they they knew that hextall was coming in with them you know you know with the
well and i'm sure he had to play out his contract a little bit with sportsnet which is what delayed
him i think but there was it wasn't like burke was just left to his own to go hire a guy i'm
just imagining him on camera if i were a president right now i'd hire ron hextall
yeah i but he wasn't he wasn't left to his own devices to go hire his guy
so yeah i'm giving i'm giving burke some leeway something that has changed too jesse you bring
it up over uh ownership yes that has also changed since those guys were hired yeah the fenway sports
group can i just before i say this into a mic brad trill living is about to be a free agent
you don't know that why do you say brad trill living in pittsburgh also his name is jim it's
Oh, Berkey.
That's a good point.
Get the Calgary band back together.
We don't know he's going to be a free agent.
He's going to be a free agent.
Come on.
The word is they want to bring him back.
Well, listen, we have Julian McKenzie on later.
We can ask him.
Just ask the fucking guy.
How about I tell him he's going to get fired?
Get Murray Edwards on the phone.
Yeah.
He's the one who makes the call.
Listen, plug your phone in.
Here's what we're going to do.
Hey, Murda.
Hey, Siri.
Call Murdog.
No, my computer just kicked in.
Is it calling anybody?
No, it's not.
It's not.
I said, my Siri is weird.
It like kicks in all the time.
And it's only been recently.
And like this morning, I was saying to Natalie, I was like, oh, I love you.
And Siri's like, I don't know how to respond to that.
That's its thing.
Steve, are you shocked that Adam's having trouble with technology?
Listen, I don't know how to shut Siri off.
Can I shut her off?
I thought she was just a part of things now.
I thought she was in every room that I was in.
I didn't know you could do that.
How old is Everly?
Four in a couple months.
No, that's no good.
You got to tell her she's got to age a little quicker
because she's got to help you answer your emails.
Set the time on my VCR?
Yeah, set the time on your VCR
and come up with a solution
that's not just
taking a sandal
and hitting it.
A sandal.
That fucking thing doesn't work.
That did work a lot though.
Hitting your computer.
Bang, bang, bang.
Did it?
Worked for me.
And look at how well
I'm doing with computers.
Listen,
so here's how the show's gonna go
because we obviously,
we've talked about the penguins here.
We're gonna talk to Dave.
Then we're bringing Julian on
to break down the flames.
I want to talk to Dave
about this Connor McDavid bet.
I'm just dying
to talk about it
because we're so close.
I need it.
I need it so bad.
Then we're talking to Julian about the Flames meltdown
And then we're going to get into the Leafs
And a few other things from around the NHL
Just after
Are we going to talk about where we are?
Oh, I guess we should talk about the studio
We never mentioned it last time
We just showed up in a brick room full of plants
No, not until later, sorry
You can bet that with David Bastel
Brought to you by Sports Interaction
Get in the action and make a play
19 plus, please play responsibly
All right, so, Dave, I mean, we just had a great Tampa-Toronto game,
which we'll get into, you know, fully in a second.
But I want to talk about this series thing.
You already have the series for the Leafs and the Lightning.
All the props are up right now at Sports Interaction.
So, what do we got here?
Yeah, well, right now, Adam, of course, the big one is series winner.
So, right now, the Leafs are favorites to win the series against Tampa Bay.
a 167 Tampa Bay paying a 225 so not only do we have that guys and we're going to be adding to
it as the series it gets closer and closer because I guess the targeted date would be Tuesday of next
week um you know who's you know how many games does it take what's the series final as far as
game results right now at Sports Interaction 4-3 Leafs final is the most bet one I know
So that's pretty good for the heart, eh, Steve?
Yeah, it's awesome, man.
It's paying a 5.05 right now.
So we have plenty of player matchups.
One I like is Kucherov-Marner, most points in series.
It's dead even at just under two.
There's a Stamkos-Tavares goal matchup.
Who's going to get more goals?
And, of course, Austin Matthews paired up with Brandon Point for most goals in series.
Auston Matthews, slight favorite, and it makes sense
because this guy's heating up, especially in his last month.
You know what?
I was enjoying last night's game just because there was no stress.
It was just an entertaining game to watch,
and I just feel like this time next week.
You brought it all back. I just sprinkled some stress on there.
Oh, man. Like paprika, eh?
Pain. Pain.
Listen, if you hate the Leafs, I mean, Tampa's a great value pick.
Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
But I like them.
Hey, so screw that.
I just want to throw this out there.
Edmonton won two to one last night against the Colorado Avalanche.
I'm nervous about it too,
because I bet Connor McDavid to score 65 to 70 goals.
He had two or three breakaways.
He had shots from the slot.
None of them went in and he assisted.
Evan Bouchard probably shouldn't have shot.
He probably should have passed it to McDavid.
He probably should have passed.
What a hog.
Yeah, what a hog, right?
Gets his seventh goal.
McDavid with his 88th assist.
McDavid had a wide open look.
We need one goal in one game.
And Edmonton, by the way, and we can talk about this later,
does actually, this game does matter because it's for the division.
So McDavid's going to be playing, I think.
Makes sense.
Do you guys think I get it?
Because I need one goal to make this happen.
How much is your payout?
My payout is $7.80 because I put two bucks on it.
Oh, that's pretty good, actually, for $2.
And a heap of pride.
I think you get it.
I think you get it, Adam.
I think you get it.
You think you get it?
But I'm also hoping for an Oilers loss because I need the Jets to play Vegas in the first round, not the Edmonton Oilers.
I want nothing to do with the Edmonton Oilers as a Jet monster fan.
I think they could beat the Vegas Golden Knights in my opinion.
I don't think the Oilers want to have anything to do with the LA Kings.
That's true.
And so I think that they desperately want the Jets.
No offense, Dave.
I don't think they want to play the Kings.
The Kings have like some of the worst save percentage in the league.
And yet they are right there.
Right there.
They did.
Did have.
Now they're one of the best.
They did.
We were talking about them being a negative goal differential team.
And now they're hovering around plus 25.
It's amazing what's happened with them.
So nobody wants to play the Kings.
You're right.
You're right.
Stay away from the Kings because if that's your first round matchup,
it's like.
That sucks.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The amount of gas you're going to use in that series,
if you win to get to the next round,
it's like.
Crazy.
Crazy.
Dave, we'll talk to you again on Friday where we're going to get into some more of, like, what we can do and, like, some of our playoff pool stuff for Sports Interaction with SDP.
Have a great week, buddy.
And congratulations on the Winnipeg Jets.
Playoff!
Welcome to the playoffs, Dave.
Thanks, fellas.
Nice to be part of the dance.
All right.
Well, I guess it must be CJ Show week on the SDP because Chris Johnson is coming in on Friday.
But because the Calgary Flames eliminated themselves yesterday as of this recording
Or sorry, I guess Monday as of this recording
Which is two days ago now
We've got to bring on athletic Calgary Flames beat reporter Julian McKenzie
Yeah, and that's the only thing he does
Yeah, that's definitely not the CJ show
By the way, Julian, I love the questions you were asking CJ on Monday's episode about the Masters
And like how he was talking about
Thank you
eating like an egg sandwich for $1.50 or something there
because once you're in, the prices are super cheap.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, like it's like looking at that menu,
it's like 66 bucks for the entire menu.
Like I've never been to the Masters.
I would like just take like a hundred bucks
and just like, I mean, maybe a hundred
and I guess 66 times two.
I just buy everything twice.
Yeah, just try it.
Just try it.
What's a Masters ham sandwich taste like?
Who knows?
That's how you save on grocery inflation.
There you go.
you go to the masters that's right it's all you do so julian obviously you know um you know there
was a lot that happened uh on monday uh it was the culmination i think of a season of just really
head-scratching moves by the flames i mean they had such an unbelievable offseason having to
replace gaudreau and kachuk they bring in a guy that's just set the record for assists in the
season by a left winger, which is Huberto. They bring in Nazem Khadri, who was sort of like
the guy that was the big free agent center that nobody seemed to be able to sign until mid to
late summer when they did. What happened in Calgary this year? And I know that's a big question.
They failed. The biggest thing you could just say is that this season was a failure. Whether you
Do you subscribe to the expectations that were laid out from Brad Treliving and Daryl Sutter at the beginning of the year where they tried to make the point that, you know, you don't win the offseason and also the division would be hard and that, you know, the goal is to make the playoffs?
Or you believe Rasmus Andersen when he says that nobody had higher expectations than them in their own locker room and they tried to block out as much noise as possible?
They failed.
This was a failure on any level that you're looking at.
The new acquisitions didn't gel well enough
or play to the standard that everyone expected them to.
The goaltending did not play at a high enough level.
I know Jacob Bartram deserves a lot of criticism on that front,
but Dan Vladar was not an adequate enough backup.
This is a guy who the franchise believes at some point
he could be a number one quality goaltender.
I don't know if they mean for the Flames,
but they do mean that in some way for him.
Neither of those guys are necessarily all that great.
Daryl Sutter has to take some of this blame too
for some of the line changes.
I'm still surprised.
I was looking back at some of the older articles I did earlier in the year.
I was still surprised they hadn't made the line changes when they did after like game seven or game eight of the season when they were still doing OK.
But after one bad loss to Edmonton, they just decided to throw off Jonathan Huberto off that top line.
The top players I had already mentioned, they didn't play at that level they expected them to.
Just the level of comfort, either just frustration setting there to just everything seemed to go wrong.
I didn't even go into any of the the puck luck stuff of, you know, out shooting your team, but out shooting your opponent, but still losing games or allowing goals on the first and second shots of games.
Like there was just anything that could go wrong just seemingly went wrong.
And that's at least what we saw on the ice anyway.
Teams are going to have highs and lows, but there there seemed to be an attitude or morale breaking point for the Calgary Flames.
And I don't know if you saw this graph that was on Twitter, but Thomas Drance was talking about the Daryl Sutter snarky comments about Pelletier's NHL debut as sort of a bit of a watershed moment for the Calgary Flames.
Was there a moment for you where this all started? And also, what do you remember of the night Pelletier made his debut?
i'll start with peltier um that's a really interesting point for what it's worth i i can
imagine some of those not even like i can imagine i think the players were genuinely excited to see
jacob peltier in the lineup this is a kid who got called up i think about two weeks before he made
his debut and he was hanging around the team and he was getting to know the guys getting in on all
those practices and already there were fans that were kind of antsy at the fact that the team would
call up a player like peltier and have him sit but in talking to him he made the point that it
was good for him to actually sit and just experience just life as an nhl or making nhl
salary money instead of your minor salary but then when it came to the moment that we're all
thinking of here where where daryl sutter just kind of made that comment saying like what number
is he like i mean i think everyone in the in the room was asking questions they were all kind of
taken aback by it we i think there was a part of us that thought okay that's just daryl being daryl
but i think when we really thought about it i think it was just something that was just
like it was a jerk move it was not a cool move and it seemed as if it was something that did not
play well with parts of the front office with the flames too i mean ratchet living uh told me on
record that uh you didn't like the optics of it and i'm sure there are other stories beyond that
too so yeah i think i don't know if that's necessarily a watershed moment where things
necessarily started to to to go down and that is the the breaking point but i definitely think that
that moment rubbed people the wrong way the wrong way i think the moment where i could tell there
was some kind of breaking point in the spirit of the team somewhere around that boston loss where
they lost in overtime with seconds left maybe the Colorado game just before where Jacob Markstrom
allows I think goals on the first two shots I know they had the Vegas game a little before too
but I think some of those guys felt they played that game really well but I think just being in
a close game with Colorado but all those but that moment at the beginning of the game just kind of
being ultimately the difference just I just felt just I was there for that game I traveled to
Colorado for that game and that was also Nazem Khadri's first game back too I think the guys
wanted to win that game and it just didn't work out and just seeing the emotions on everybody
the kid is Adorov who normally could be a little bit snarky he has personality he was beside
himself after that game he did not have a good game for what it's worth I think that's when I
really started to see the spirit start to break with this team I think that's when they really
that's when they really started to get down on themselves I think at that point in February
so you know and this is this is something that's been a a season-wide problem right where um that
Sutter moment is sort of if you take that and you extrapolate over the year and you know the things
that are happening behind closed doors it seems like the Flames players who are just as talented
as they were last year this team is on paper should be just as good um it seems like they are
playing under a coach that they really don't like and you can always tell that the teams that are
just not quite gelling with their coach and maybe then not gelling with each other because they
almost play like they're laboring um where did Daryl Sutter go wrong this year because you know
we've been talking since November about how this wasn't working and how this wasn't a fit and we
know that the owner is a huge fan of the guy what uh what ended up being in your estimation
his biggest failure as a head coach this year that's a really complex question uh to start
just with the guys and the fact that they could all be kind of turned off on on Daryl Sutter
I am of the impression that and I think it's clear to me and clear to other people too there
are guys in that room I think who like Daryl there are Daryl guys a guy like Tyler Toffoli
who was on a podcast a couple of weeks ago.
I don't know what the name of the podcast was,
but he said some good things about Daryl Sutter.
Milan Lucic gets to play games in this lineup
and he is a point of contention among fans.
I'd be very surprised if he wasn't in some way
a Daryl Sutter person.
And I think in a locker room like that,
where maybe you have guys who might be pro Daryl
and maybe guys were just frustrated,
however you want to measure it,
that would always make a situation like that
pretty interesting.
I know a lot of people were speculating about the relationship
between Nazem Khadri and Daryl Sutter,
and he acknowledged that there have been some ups and downs,
but I think he is also a guy who also played under Mike Babcock too,
so he knows a thing or two about playing for guys who are,
well, I don't think they'd call this an insult if I said this, hard asses.
A lot of people are wondering, okay, what's the relationship like
with Jonathan Huberto and Daryl Sutter?
I still find it really interesting when we asked him about that earlier this year
and he used the word friendship, I still think he misspoke when he said that.
That's not a word you use when you describe a dynamic with your coach,
especially one who puts you on your off wing,
has you going up and down the lineup, going from a top line winger
to playing with Michael Backlund on a third line
or playing with Nassim Khadri on a second line.
That's a really interesting word to use.
I'm still convinced he didn't mean to use that word,
but that's just my personal thinking, if anything.
it's hard to say like where like one thing that he went wrong the one thing i will say
that will stick with me i guess i don't know if it's necessarily where everything went wrong
but that's something that in hindsight i realize maybe there is something to it i think of that
first month where the flames are off to like their best start they win the first few games of the
year they pick off wins over colorado i think vegas is in there too there was a bad buffalo
loss in there but they get this win against pittsburgh and at the beginning of the game
before the game uh they're in one of the media veils daryl is mentioning how the penguins have
all this cup pedigree and they have all these guys who've won cups before and all that he's
always big on that and at the end of the game they win this game they they basically play a
really good game and i remember asking daryl like hey like is that as close to a 60 minute effort
as you've done as you've had to start the year and he kind of makes this point be like hey well
you know uh we get a lot of like 20 something shots the second period are you kidding me like
is that a 60 minute effort i don't remember the exact score of that game but if you go back to
that that was a game that like going away the flames were the better team they had a day off
and then they had a bag skate and then they had another day off and then they go to edmonton and
then that's where the losing kind of starts to begin with this team i know like some people
might look back at that practice it was a long practice too i remember we were all kind of
sitting around to be like man jeez these guys are getting worked for a team that's that's doing
particularly well but i believe there were some days days off in between so i think daryl might
have used that point as a way just to try to max out as much of his guys as possible in the limited
amount of time he had but i always wondered if if you're a team that even if you have the guys
that you have who know about the peaks and valleys of a year you know if you're off to a really good
start but you know maybe your coach is kind of coming across in a way where he's saying like
hey like the standard that you think we're at like you know it's it's not good enough and he's
And if he was willing to say that comment to me, I wonder how he handled that Pittsburgh game at the beginning of the year when things seemed to be looking good and how players might have responded to that.
Because there's a clear like that's if anything, if you want to look at a at a moment where things start to go wrong.
And again, maybe maybe it was because of Daryl.
Maybe it was because of something else.
You have to go back to early October.
Like, it's just after that start, which was the best start in franchise history, that loss against Edmonton, which was like their second encounter against Edmonton this year.
Like, that's when things seemingly start to go wrong.
And I wonder if there's something that happened in that week, in that stretch of time that led to all of that.
I'm really wondering.
Is it okay to say, like, here's the thing.
You're like nine games in.
Stanley Cup predigree is impossible to achieve at nine games in.
Is it okay to say, hey, we're on the right track, but we're, you know, enjoy the win, guys.
but we got some work to do like it doesn't seem like he was willing to do that it seems like he's
the kind of guy that's like it's it's well it's not there yet and we're gonna we're gonna keep
harping on it and i'm not sure we've talked this has come up before with it there's like a
generational thing happening between millennials and gen z and then the older generations and
their inability to communicate with each other and i'm wondering if that plays a part of it you
know what i mean like it's sort of i've heard daryl sutter pre-game speeches described as a
and that was 10 years ago so yeah like i wonder and and it's one i mean generations is one thing
but also the stanley cops the one famous photo that went around earlier in the year there's like
a meeting during practice where daryl sutter uh has everyone on the team who has won a stanley
cup like in a circle around him so like milan lucic is there tyler toffoli is there uh not
some countries in that circle all those guys are there you gotta remember there are other guys on
that team who have not won a stanley cup and they you know they go through their ups and downs of a
season but maybe not to a point where it ends up with a stanley cup at the end of it all right so
that's a there's a different there's a difference in in mentality there's a difference in what you
endure in those types of years i wonder if whatever message was sent particularly that week and i
should just kind of preface this by saying this is me wondering aloud and not saying definitively
like this is where things went wrong although you could easily make that argument but i wonder if
something switched then or if something was said or if the a message didn't take or just
something went off like i i i wonder if there's something in that stretch of games
do you think uh jim true living brad do you think jim true living's job should be in jeopardy
because the latest word out of uh out of calgary i think it's freeman he was on radio yesterday
saying that once the offseason begins then they're going to begin the negotiations for
brad's new contract because he's without a contract for next year um but you know you make
you make the big changes with your top players leaving you bring in the new guys and you miss
the playoffs do you think his job should be in jeopardy or do you think the extension is
at the uh the new contracts just a foregone conclusion it's going to come well i think
because of the fact that they failed this year i think everyone in that front office is uh everyone's
going to be evaluated and for you know brad true living obviously is going to be looked at as like
that's the guy he's the gm his contract expired he's not the only person in that front office
whose contract is expired when people say like there could be a lot of changes coming to the
organization and all that like don't just think about it from a player's standpoint in terms of
okay they're close to the salary cap limit they could move off these guys like what about some
of the other agms that are there like what about some of the other guys in that front office i
don't have every single name but i know for sure uh of at least one other ag one agm whose contract
is like you know not guaranteed and well not guaranteed but like they're they're expiring
and they're kind of living in the moment right now they're trying to figure out like what's going on
and he might not be the only one there so in terms of some of those changes like don't just think
it's in terms of players and and and maybe even coaches who knows in terms of how they look at it
but there could be a shake-up in the front office too who knows it depends on how that goes and with
brad for living i feel as if he is the biggest domino uh with all of that uh it's what friedman
was saying is is is kind of what i've heard too in terms of you know the fact that probably there
will be just not probably the discussions will probably continue again in the offseason but i
think in terms of figuring out what you want to do with the roster and what you want to do with
the coaches what you want to do with everything else like it kind of has to start with with brad
and because of the fact that they missed the playoffs because of the fact that those moves
didn't necessarily work out the way that they would have wanted to and i guess you have to
incorporate the coach and and also just other factors in this that for why it didn't work
but i don't know like you kind of have to say yeah it's in jeopardy and who knows but i also
will say this while the flames could look at this and be like i'm not sure we would want to bring
brad for living back i think brad for living with this contract expiring i think he's very much in
the right to say i don't know if i want to be back right and i think it's a it's i think this
is one of those kind of weird two-way street things where you know if the flames really want
him back they got to give him the bag and it's got to be at something that brad trillivan would
want you know are they also yeah yeah i think that's to be considered in all this too and he's
the longest serving gm in canada is he not yeah yeah he's been there almost a decade yeah yeah
which i mean so yeah you could see why somebody might want to change after that too right like
sometimes things just absolutely um i i want to know this with the caudry signing and then the
huberto extension are both of those players untradeable are the flames no matter who's
running the team uh from head office on down are they married to those two
wayne gretzky got traded no one's on is ever untradeable okay pk suban pk suban got traded
like anybody could get traded like the idea of contracts being on people being untradeable like
i've always found that weird because if there's a will there's a way yeah in this case with
cadre and hubert those contracts being as they are with the production that they've gotten
if the flames wanted to go down that road and flip off both of those guys or either of those
guys in any situation i can't see them if they win that trade like that's remarkable in itself
i can't see that happening without some kind of salary retention or or them taking much less than
they would ideally want for those pieces if they want to to go down that route i i still feel as if
you know they sign those players with the intention of winning at least within the first few years of
both of those respective deals and i think you also have to lump in mckenzie wieger's deal as
well he's not in his 30s yet but that's someone else who has an extension that kicks and you'll
be the highest paid defenseman on the team starting next year like i don't know i feel
like when you have those players your intention is to at least try to you know make something of
whatever championship window you extended for yourself and I still would be very surprised if
any of those guys were offloaded in the offseason that being said I mean that really depends on
who's running the ship I think if Brad Treliving stays I would be surprised if he just said you
know what after one year I'm cutting bait on these guys if it's somebody else who knows could
daryl setter be promoted to gm because he was in la that's what that's what people in calgary have
been scared about for so long i just people have been like people have been clutching their pearls
about that like oh no don't send us back to the days when he was gm but remember in calgary because
in calgary too he was gm yes that's right trying to be trying to be coaching gm and that did not
work no i don't think he'd do that i don't think he'd do that again where he'd be coaching gm
i don't i i don't feel i don't know i can't i don't have an answer for you if he would
do a gm job i i have no idea i i generally honestly have no idea do you have one and
that's not me trying to couch anything i don't know so the season was a failure in calgary i
think everybody agrees absolutely but do you have one place where you place most of the blame because
they were top five in expected goals and then bottom 10 in pdo so they're super unlucky but
then justin board did some work about like the shots they took were they high quality shots and
there there's some argument to if they were if they weren't so does that fall on the gm the roster
construction does it fall on the players and their ability to play to their best ability does it fall
on coaching where do you where do you place the most blame for the failure in calgary just to put
a bow on the season my answer is yes it's really hard for me to just put it on one
yeah totally yeah the media wasn't friendly the media was so bad ah the media we're the enemy
apparently um you have to mention goaltending in that too you can't just look at the the forwards
and because hey yeah come on like i i think if there are games this year where the flames would
get off to a pretty decent start they're getting shots they're applying pressure and then jacob
barkstrom's going out of his net and then a goal is allowed like it's very clear the win was taken
out of their sails at different points with jacob barkstrom allowed the first goal of a game and
they played from behind and uh like i look jacob barkstrom i still think there's something in him
as a goalie uh i know the contract that he signed a lot of people are going to start looking at that
And they're going to be like, I don't know about that, about that six mil and that NMC, especially when you have Dustin Wolf, who could be the best player in the American Hockey League, who actually got called up a couple of minutes before we got to recording and is supposed to make his debut tonight against San Jose.
Could you imagine, by the way, small side note, if Dustin Wolf has himself a great game against San Jose, people in Calgary are going to lose their minds.
I already had a friend text me before we got started, be like, why did the Flames wait until they were eliminated to call up their best prospect?
like i don't know for me like i'm on the fence with that like i i think for a goalie like you
got to be careful yeah maybe you want to throw them into a poison dressing room that's fair
that's more than fair yeah you know you got to be careful about the situation that you're throwing
them in and also because you have markstrom and because he has the contract that he has
i mean daryl sutter literally called him his ace like a couple days ago like unless they move off
from that contract or or dustin wolf really uh like impresses like he's not going to supplant
jacob bartram any time soon plus they have dan vladar back there and if you're talking if you're
in a situation where you're saying okay we think dustin wolf is ready and he should be playing
games dan vladar you're gonna have to deal with that contract too and again i mentioned goaltending
was not good that's something else you're gonna have to deal with too because dan vladar start
statistics were not necessarily uh otherworldly to say the least but all that to say like
i don't have a specific thing to lay the blame on because it just felt like at different points
in the year something just didn't work i guess if you want to if you have to pick maybe goaltending
is the reason i think if goaltending was just around league average they're probably in a
playoff spot easily but yeah i think so like it's just that probably is the answer but i just think
that there were times when they really needed a game-breaker
and they could not get it because they were in games
where they were trying to match up against other teams
and they just didn't have that oomph, that extra player
that should put them over the top.
They were sorely lacking that this year.
But it's really hard for me to pinpoint just one thing.
But if I have to, probably goaltending.
That's the answer.
You get a couple saves and you're in the playoffs.
Julian, I'm looking at this division.
You got two teams that are probably out of it for next year,
San Jose and Anaheim, right?
Probably not going to be very good.
Especially if Carlson gets traded in the offseason.
Vancouver is tricking themselves into thinking they're good again.
I can't wait for them to be the exact same next year
and then maybe fire another head coach in February.
They're the hardest team to predict, I think, in the NHL.
So it's not unreasonable for a division to have five teams make the playoffs.
Vegas, Edmonton, LA, you think are locked.
Seattle looks good.
Where does Calgary finish in the division next year?
And I won't hold you to this, I promise.
it's too difficult to answer here's the thing man like i like i would hate for you to do that
because like right now if you were to say okay take the exact same roster the exact same coach
everything run it all back for next year they'd probably finish in the same place i don't know
like i mean i guess some of the bad luck they endured can't possibly repeat itself and there
have been moments where they played really well well really fit you're also in it absolutely but
you're also but you'd also but you'd also in this case you'd be like okay well tyler to foley you
had a career year go do that again michael backlin you're 34 years old you're gonna be 35 next year
you're playing the best year of your career go do that again um you're hoping jonathan huberto's
confidence is restored and he doesn't have a year that's as bad as what that is as what he's going
through right now which is probably his stats haven't been this low since like the third year
in his league yeah you're hoping Nazem Qadri takes advantage of a longer offseason and and just kind
of rests and recuperates and actually plays at a high level which I guess is not entirely
impossible but I guess just with the way that they're playing the talent that they have
if you run it back the same way and you get down to that style I still think like if they could use
they could use a bit more speed they could use a bit more like skill yeah i still kind of see
them as a team that's like a wild card team on those and i'd be i'd love to be proven wrong but
like vegas i still think vegas is kind of weird but i if they're at full strength they're still
a top three team edmonton is edmonton la is really ascending now i think we could stop putting the
underrated label on them they're going to be a contender starting next season i think especially
if they have a decent run in the playoffs this year um yeah i i still kind of see them as a team
in the same place but that's with if they keep everything as it is right now wow julian i i got
to apologize for wasting your time because we've missed the most important question dustin wolf
what do you mean make his nhl debut what's his number yes good question uh this is 32 it has to
be 32 same as what it was in the oh boy it's daryl all over again i mean i i would love to
see it um but also the one thing i i at ahl games when he plays with the wranglers uh and he makes
a save you'll hear like this like wolf call the ow noise that's cool i i that's that's not happening
get the NHL. Yes, it is.
It has to.
So they play like a button?
No.
And then you hear like,
but like,
I was having a conversation with
someone about that. I heard that at a game. I was like, oh, that would be
a really cool thing. And they just kind of looked at me
and they just said, yeah, during preseason games
like Daryl told them to stop doing that.
Fire the
coach just for that. Come on.
I hope the fans do it. I hope the
fans just jump in and start doing it.
yeah because that would be cool now that i think is an organic thing to have happen that would be
cool oh i love that i love that well julian listen it's been a pleasure having you on it's it's what
a disaster season uh but i hope that you're gonna um i hope that you my friend who did an amazing
job covering the flames this year um obviously you thank you there's gonna be like locker clean
out and all that stuff that you have to go through and then the draft and everything else but i hope
that you get some rest man like i know you wanted to cover the playoffs and stuff like that but
a little bit of a breather for you because i know you've been going full tilt you got like three
shows and you've got you're covering a beat and you've been really impressive this year it's it's
uh amazing how you've managed to stop working on adam wild time yeah it's enough
trust me that's really kind for you to say well thank you that's really kind for you to say man
thank you we uh we've been blown away by your coverage and i think to me uh and i'm slightly
biased but to me you're the go-to guy in calgary to uh to break down the flames when i haven't seen
the game so uh i'm uh blown away by you man we're really proud of you thank you and uh also thank
you to everyone uh in calgary or montreal or across the country or across the nhl world who
uh took the time to read any of my material this year and uh there is more coming so uh
just uh keep an eye out and uh i'll just uh keep on trucking man thank you for the support it
really it really means a lot they should use you more on on sports now i like seeing you on the
loop yeah on the morning when when you get hit do the morning hit and then you're just on the loop
for like six hours it's very nice your face is great hey julia they know where to find me man
i'm here i'm not beholden to sports that either tsn.ca the three and threes was falling volgy
hit me up you know i'm here i'm here i'm here you know it's it's a bummer that jesse and steve

So before we get into the Leafs stuff, and by the way, thank you, Julian, again, for coming on.
Gord Miller tweeted this out.
This was on the broadcast.
A kid named Blake.
I came from Toronto, and this is his sign to see my heroes, 34 and 16.
And, of course, Matthews and Marder were two of the guys that were resting yesterday
because, you know, we're playing Tampa next week.
We don't need them to play tonight.
And anyway, I just want to do a little shout-out
to the Toronto Maple Leafs game staff
because they brought this kid behind,
I don't want to call it backstage,
but into the dressing room,
and he got to meet Matthews and Marner in person,
which is even better.
You know what?
I am pissed because we went to Game 82 last year.
Yes, we did.
And I brought my
I came to watch my heroes play
I came all the way from Oshawa
To watch my heroes play
And I got Nick Abruzzese
As like their top line center
It was great
And no one brought me a stick
Sorry
It's trash
No one does it for you Steve
It's trash
You know
Jesse don't you think it's a shame
How Steve's been treated by hockey
Yeah
Nothing's ever worked out
With Steve's hockey
Hockey life and career
Never got anything for free
That he's worn for 10 years
No the game's been bad to Steve
It's been bad to me
And I hate the injustice
Of this child
This is actually cool as hell
This is really cool
I wish it was Steve though
I wish it was Steve
I wish it was a 35 year old man
Meeting Mitch and Austin
Being like hi I need a stick
Hello
Young adults who are like a decade
Younger than me
You are my idols
By the way I still see them as older than us
I don't know what it is with NHL players,
but I will never get out of that mindset that they're actually younger.
So here's where I'm at in my head.
Mitch and Austin are about four years younger than me in my head.
Mark Giordano is about 15 years older.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes, absolutely.
That's how it works.
By the way, I wanted to do a quick shout out because I promised I would do it.
At Joey Ferg on Twitter, J-O-E-Y-F-E-R-G.
That's where I've been getting these shirts.
the giordano shirt the poppy shirt i wore yesterday and this uh toronto passion haver
oh i've got that shirt too it's great yeah i wanted to shout them out so that people don't
buy the fake ones because apparently there's like an epidemic of like websites that just
rip off your design and sell it are you serious yeah oh i didn't know i bought one once i didn't
know oh wow so you're the problem i am wow hi i'm the problem it's me adam did you send the
email to mlse about about how steve should be getting this i you know what i'm gonna work on
it after the show take that child's gift away yeah i jesse to me the reason i haven't sent it
yet is it's not mean enough ah like i feel like for it to stand out at mlse's inbox it needs to
be cutting yes like boy i'm sure you're not good at your job right because this 35 year old man
that i know yeah sure could sure could have used guys by the way you've met austin and mitch yeah
Yeah, but they didn't give me any sign stuff.
They didn't sign his T-shirt and pat him on the head.
No.
Listen to this.
Where's your head pat?
They shook my hand.
They didn't tussle your hair?
Matthews shook my head with his cast.
Oh, yeah?
That was one of the most terrifying moments of my career, by the way.
Because you didn't get Matthews this media time.
Yeah, I did, actually.
Oh, you did this time?
Not at Leafs Media Day.
I got him at NHL Media Day in Vegas.
Sorry, Henderson.
Henderson, Nevada, yeah.
but when I was at the St. Louis
All-Star Game... God forbid they hold it in Vegas.
I know. Matthews had a
brace on his right hand. By the way, I heard
the problem with that. There's just not enough hotels.
Yeah, there's no convention centers.
It's tough. It's really tough.
Vegas is a tough place to vacation, you know?
Anytime you can go see the home of the Henderson
Silver Knights. That's right!
Sorry, I interrupted you. He shook your hand
with the cast. He shook my hand with the
cast, and I was like, oh my god, this is about to be
the daintiest dead fish handshake
of my entire life, because that is the most
valuable wrist in canada what did you do did you squeeze it like no because how do you i didn't
know how delicate his wrist was so here here give me like a wet fish i don't like it no here do it
again oh head fish gross yucky i hate a bad hand we're adults i hate a bad handshake
like a bad one like ew like no fucking no do that hands shake no
Ow! Ow! I have a brace!
I make him have a million dollars!
The key is to look at the elbow when you're going in.
No, that's high-fiving.
Oh, that's high-fiving.
High-fiving you'll never miss if you look at the other person's elbow.
No, I think the key is to bite your lip and stare at their nose.
I'm just trying to be creepy.
Bite your lip and stare at your nose?
Where did you hear that?
I made it up on the spot just now.
Oh, okay.
I was like, is there a movie reference in there that I'm forgetting?
Usually there is.
um so so listen the leafs going into last night as we said on the show yesterday we were not sure
if they were going to be able to start their own goaltender from their own system yeah that whole
hectic situation it was almost it so they did get anuska did they not from the windsor spitfire yes
with his sub 900 save percentage in the oh but that's a little unfair because the scoring is
crazy but people were like oh yeah really that guy apparently is also you're looking for a guy
to sit on the bench well maybe not though right and and so yeah but you're not if he plays yeah
if he if there's a scenario where he's the goalie of record you're not trying to win that hockey
game right you're trying to survive cj i mean you are but you're not cj who covers the leafs every
day in our group chat was like guys if there was ever a time to put 20 bucks on not the leafs this
would be the night and when it was one one i bet on the leafs so i oh yeah i bet pre-game i broke
my $2 thing
and I was like,
you know what?
Maybe I will.
So I went to $10.
Against?
$10 against.
Judas!
You bet on the Lightning?
Judas!
I did because I thought,
what the hell?
I'll never bet against the Leafs.
Well, no,
I never bet against the Leafs
in the playoffs.
That's always my rule.
But I just thought,
okay, this could be fun.
And I regretted it instantly
because as soon as the game started,
I'm like, you know what?
I don't even care
who's playing for the Leafs.
Fuck these guys.
Fuck them.
I went full into
like playoff fan mode.
Like, fuck these guys.
So I regret the bet.
I do.
The moment the first hit was thrown, I'm like, fuck it.
Go Leafs.
Passion.
Have her win this game.
100%.
You have no choice.
This game means everything.
And like five minutes prior, I'm like, I shouldn't even watch.
That's also, Adam, that's the biggest square better move is when something seems so obvious.
Like, how could this team possibly lose this game?
You bet the other way.
Yes.
You bet on that team who could never, ever win this game.
Happens all the time in football.
You bet against them.
You scream at their arena staff.
Oh.
You scream.
Yes.
Absolutely at the top of his lungs scream.
Yep.
You take a helicopter to the SDPN studio.
That's right.
Absolutely.
I land on the roof.
We had to build a landing pad on the roof for Adam's helicopter.
For me.
And then I got out like Logan Roy and I told everybody to fuck off.
By the way.
No, I'm not.
William Nylander opened the scoring last night.
And speaking of bets, I took the bet that Jesse created.
It's 40-40.
The 40-40 bet.
He's at 39 goals.
Come on.
But I think the best goal of the whole game was Luke Shen's absolute top cheddar snipe.
Fucking unbelievable.
It was a fucking knuckleball.
Sometimes, Jesse, sometimes it's not the shot.
It's the person it's coming from.
And the fact that Luke Shen could do that.
He didn't want the smoke.
He didn't want the smoke.
Wobbly UFO looking puck just floating.
Tim Wakefield knuckleball, 35 kilometers per hour.
That's when we saw that rocket and he went, whoa.
His self-preservation instincts kicked in.
What part of the stick did it go off of?
It was like the outside of the blade.
The rocket launcher part.
That's right.
It's the rocket.
It'll get you.
so I wanted the Gordie Howe hat trick though yeah you wanted him to get the assist right but he did
have the fight so so the fight thing is interesting because it starts with Pat Maroon running uh I
forget who I think it was Callie Yarncroke into the boards and then his stick going into the Leafs
bench Michael Bunting grabs it for literally a split second but when you're Pat Maroon your job
is to let nothing go fuck you it's our water bottle right yes and so he and he and uh Bunting
start talking and then later on that shift luke shen and pat maroon go head to head love that
and i gotta say he won luke shen won he won that fight i would not have like i wasn't sure what to
expect i get why maroon's gotta take that fight um like leading into the playoffs it's not a great
move uh for self-preservation um because like he was he's been injured recently yeah a lot of the
lightning have been it's they played a lot of extra games well like they've played almost a
full season more than than than the three seasons that they've gone right because the playoffs there
are parallels with this year's lightning and last heading into the playoffs the difference is last
year's lightning were cold heading into the playoffs this year's lightning are hurt um you
guys too afraid to say it what lightning are washed no i don't know about washed i don't feel
that i will say there's ab no fuck here comes you're really gonna make me say it clip it say
it clip the leafs are gonna win the leafs are gonna win this series the lightning are washed
they have no excuse to lose this series a hundred percent they don't there's no reason okay that's
fair that's fair they don't have any excuses yeah because they have no people will make up
the lightning are washed they're better on paper they're healthier why are they losing this they're
better looking they're better looking don't don't give me that yeah and they're better looking don't
Don't give me the pedigree and the three straight Stanley Cup finals.
The three straight Stanley Cup finals is why they might not be able to make it.
It's become a detriment at this point.
Well, I mean, didn't the Oilers not win four straight?
The 80s Oilers never went to four straight Stanley Cups.
They went to three.
It's so hard.
Yeah.
It's really hard to do.
And this doesn't take away from the Lightning at all.
Hey, hey.
Ten in a row.
Ten in a row.
here it is but um i don't know just looking at the lightning lately forgetting this game
forgetting this game the leaf should win this fucking series okay so but uh sorry all that to
say like maroon was hurt before this game gets into a fight gets hurt during the game
i i don't think it was a i understand why he did it but it wasn't yeah smart um six by the way
In six?
Is that your bet?
Leafs in six.
Okay.
So Corey Perry was also running wild a little bit,
and it's clear that he's targeting Michael Bunting.
I think that the Lightning see Michael Bunting as a tremendous weak point
for the Leafs because they do put a lot on Michael Bunting to score.
They play him in top-line minutes.
Not anymore.
Okay, okay.
But that's how the league – I'm just giving you what their perception might be.
And you're right.
He's played, like, third line sometimes or whatever.
and with the emergence of Callie Arncroke who we'll get to in a second that's really changed
but Michael Bunting they see as a guy who could fly off the handle and get them the power plays
that they're seeking and if you look at the way he was called again last night there's six guys
in a scrub so Bunting comes in to just grab a guy from behind and the refs immediately like you're
out you're gone now that was wild so that penalty was awful and made up and bullshit this is the
first time ever i'm gonna defend the refs they had an impossible job last night yeah like from
the moment the game started they're like we're gonna call this and we're gonna call that and
we're gonna call everything there were 14 penalties in that game because they identified that as a
game that could get out of hand and it did before the end of the first period it did yeah i thought
you did a great job in the lfr explaining that it's like the refs did a good job in the sense
that they had to call everything there wasn't a line brawl yeah this is the situation where the
refs just everything's out of control let's just try and get a hold of this game yeah listen you
guys are gonna fight and slash and bite and kick and try to kill each other you might as well do
it during uh playoff games where we make more money yeah we're not allowing it tonight yeah
we're not allowing it tonight uh next week fill your boots yeah tonight yeah uh joseph wall makes
45 saves
45 saves
now you'd think
with the Leafs
down their top
two scorers
and I think
top defenseman
as well
or you might
consider
well Giordano
yeah
he's been amazing
this year
top one defenseman
Mark Giordano
he is
one of one
tell me
tell me he's not
the best defenseman
they've had this year
Mark Giordano
yeah
I'm not talking about
over the course
of the season
he has not been
their best defenseman
this year
over the course
of the season
who's been better
TJ Brody
TJ Brody
is their best defenseman
I guess because
Gio's played more
I feel like that's why.
TJ Brody's been fantastic.
He's been fantastic.
He's the best 39-year-old they have.
He's the best.
Okay, fair enough.
Geo's two, though, for me.
Because he's played the full year.
He plugged the gap when Morgan Riley went down.
I love Giordano.
I think he's been amazing.
I love your enthusiasm.
Okay, you know what?
You guys are wrong.
You guys are wrong.
TJ Brody, you always forget about because he's so good.
You just don't even notice him.
He made a bad play last night.
100%.
Joseph Wall, 45 saves.
Here's what I got to know.
because it seems like they're going into the playoffs
with Matt Murray not being healthy,
post-concussion syndrome, whatever it might be.
They haven't said those words yet,
but they say he has a concussion,
and it's post his concussion.
So if he's feeling symptoms from his concussion,
therefore it's post-concussion syndrome.
How long after a concussion is it called that?
It's immediate.
And the question is,
how long does post-concussion syndrome last?
But if you have effects after a concussion,
that's what happens.
Even if Murray is healthy.
But they said it's not a concussion.
Right.
But then they said it was.
They did say it was.
Keith had initially come out and said it wasn't his head.
It was a concussion.
Yeah, coaches are –
Yeah.
Don't –
Listen, you get the update from the team or you don't get it at all.
Coaches are liars.
Yeah.
Even if Murray's healthy, you can't dress him in game one.
Joseph Wall is pretty fucking good.
Like, the last thing I can remember Sheldon Keith saying about Matt Murray
before he went down with his latest injury was
we need him to let in less than four goals.
If I could go back in time,
like Joseph Wall is the backup all season long.
Yes.
It's Sammy.
Because the reason he's had the success
is because of how fucking hot he started the season
with the Marlies.
If at the beginning of the season,
you told me the Leafs were going at it
with Joseph Wall as their backup,
I would have said Kyle has lost his fucking mind
Yeah but then he would have been right
He would have been right
On paper he was the fourth goalie
So I would have lost it
The contract
That Matt Murray signed
Oh Matt Murray
I thought you were talking about Joseph Wall
The contract that Matt Murray signed
If you swapped that for Joseph Wall
And the cap space
And what they could have done with that extra money instead
It would have been so cool
They traded two years of Peter Murnazik
they can do it they can do it they can do it everybody's tradable as julian said all all i
would all i would say is um the marlies are in the playoffs and if you're going to need joseph wool
you're probably not going to want him cold and having just sat in the press box so when the
playoffs start if murray were to be healthy which it doesn't look like he's going to be but if he
were healthy maybe you play wall in the marlies and so why not have but if then but if sam sonoff
who apparently is fighting something as they all are at this time of year um and also maybe they
said that to create the emergency conditions to get joseph wall up playoffs don't start for a week
i know but i'm saying if sam sonoff did go down with an injury and we you know knock on wood
obviously hoping he doesn't if you've got wool playing i guess with the marlies every day and
he's playing well you bring him up and start him in place of matt murray my point is i don't think
you can confidently start matt murray in the playoffs against the tampa bay light oh starting
is not an option no okay okay um i want to i want to reintroduce leaf fans to john cooper
uh because i think i think sometimes leafs and tampa when they play each other it's always
competitive but it's not like a blood feud like the bruins and leafs and really the blood feud
on the Bruins and Leafs is one-sided because the Bruins always have always beat the Leafs it's uh
I feel like there's a mutual they don't like each other what the Leafs and Leafs and Bruins oh no
I'm talking Leafs and Lightning uh I don't want to say this because of the handshake line thing
but there is I feel like there's a mutual respect between the two yes but what I love is John Cooper
fucking with the media and here's the thing normally he only gets to fuck with the Tampa
media but he's gonna get a stage in toronto and i'm sorry tampa it's a bit of a different stage
it's a bit outsized um and here's what he said about last night's game tell me if you agree
and tell me what he's doing here because i want to know what you guys think
there was zero intensity in that game i'm telling you there was none it may have looked like it from
the stands that was an exhibition game it wasn't even a regular season game clearly there was a
mandate going into that game so what is he saying okay i don't even know what the mandate might be
i don't i'm not even sure so that's funny i thought the quote was going in a dick a different
direction and it uh he completely swerved there at the end so there was zero intensity to that game
what i thought he was saying is you thought this was intense just wait for the playoffs to start
right read the full quote it may so there was zero intensity in the game i'm telling you
there was none it may have looked that way from the stands uh that was an exhibition game it
wasn't even a regular season game clearly there was a mandate going into that game
he's telling the officials to knock it off that's what that's what the mandate is so the mandate is
coming into the game that we all saw the mandate from officiating was don't let it get out of
control don't let it get out of control neglecting dimension that the lightning went oh for eight
on the power play they got more penalties leaves for six leaves got more penalties than the
lightning yeah so but he's he's he's whining that it's there that game wasn't uh a more playoff
style where we're talking three four power plays a game probably split evenly or whatever uh and
your team can get away with more and what's amazing and this is what i say about the playoffs
every year it's not about the penalties that are called it's about the ones that aren't well did
you see the nikita kucherov kind of sticking his foot out and tripping one of the leafs players
that's what the ref caught but did they call harry yeah they did but the cory perry cross check on
bunting no fine a-okay a-okay and that's why i think heading into a series against tampa you
have to play bunting lower in the lineup uh because of this fucking dickhead who by the way
like people people have been talking about bunting's reputation is his fault
fair i think that's fair fair um he's a rat i think that's fair fair he can be a diver
i think that's fair fair what is the fundamental difference between cory perry and michael bunting
That isn't age.
Corey Perry has, he has, well, he's got, I mean, a heart trophy.
He's a higher-end player.
Yeah, was, was.
Was a higher-end player.
Is no longer.
Like, there's, yeah, at no point in Buzzing's career is he going to.
I think age factors in.
You asked me to take age out.
Like, he's got a better resume.
He scored 50 goals in a year.
No, no, no.
You're comparing them in terms of quality of player.
i'm talking about personality and shit that they get away with cory perry doesn't say a word
to the refs yeah he doesn't say a word to the refs he's not signing sticks for longer he doesn't
yeah at the refs yeah he's developed a relationship with them he is every bit uh as much of a greasy
weasel rat as bunting if not more so certainly more notorious so what what do you want what you
want bunting to get more calls no i want bunting to study the game tape win a heart trophy or win
a heart trophy
if you're asking cory if you're asking bunting to be cory perry win a heart trophy in the stanley
cup no you're misunderstanding like what are you asking understanding what i'm saying play the game
with the refs is no bunting is villain number one because of his antics and i'm not seeing
why Corey Perry is any better.
He's not.
I think the resumes are different.
I think when you play for Team Canada
and win a gold medal
and a lot of the refs are Canadian.
You're not getting it.
Okay, make your point clearer.
I agree, though.
They pull the same shit.
And we're with you on that.
Yeah.
But my thing is,
I think Corey Perry and Brad Marchand
and any other rat you want to name,
I think they're better at playing the ref game.
Two people in the NHL doing the same thing
isn't called the same by the refs.
No.
So Corey Perry and Michael Bunting can't do the same thing
So you can bitch and whine about how that's unfair
Or lower in the lineup
Leaf fans, we can all complain about how that's unfair
But if the scale's movable
If it's this guy doing this
Is different than this guy doing this
And they're both the same action
Then you as Michael Bunting
As that being a part of your game
And a part of your resume going forward
Need to figure out how they got there
If that's what you're going to be
It's sort of like, you know, when I started out in broadcasting, and I still do this, people who are more successful than me, I look at them, I read their books, I track their progress, I go, how did they get there?
And how do I get there?
The thing that I want to be.
He's got to.
And this is part of the process.
He's got to study this.
Yeah.
And in Adam's situation, when he's looking up at people who make more money than him, he's looking at like Elon and Jeff Bezos, obviously.
And that's kind of the end of the list.
That's it.
Yeah.
I call him J-Dog.
Well, actually, with NPR leaving Twitter, I mean, the value is going down.
So Adam might move up to number two.
Oh, you're right.
We got to check the Forbes list.
Yeah.
You're going to catch the dude with the dick spaceship any day now.
Cool.
I can't wait.
He has a dick spaceship.
We're going to read about his dick spaceship in history books and say, there's the man with the dick spaceship.
So the Bunting lower in the lineup thing.
Because we're kind of in agreement that he can't be Corey Perry
because he's not Corey Perry.
Yeah.
So you say –
He can't be peak Corey Perry.
You say play him on the third line.
Third or fourth.
I think that's how you neutralize Corey Perry.
Probably third.
You're right.
Yeah, probably third.
The higher up in the lineup you have Michael Bunting, in my opinion,
right now as it stands – and I could change this in a couple games
because guess what?
I'm allowed to.
The higher up in the line you have Michael Bunting,
the more power you give Corey Perry.
Exactly.
It's got nothing to do with his lack of ability.
No, he deserves it.
But the way they're calling the game right now,
the Leafs have got to work their team around that.
And a guy like Callie Arncroke, who I want to get to,
who just scored his 20th goal.
He had his 19th assist last night.
First 20-goal season.
That, to me, as much as we go,
fuck, I would really love to have Bunting up there
with Matthews and Marner or Nylander,
you're going to have to play it this way.
You don't have a choice.
And the refs are not changing the way
they're going to call bunting the rest of the season.
The fourth line thing makes sense too
if O'Reilly's on the third line.
Because then you have that defensive line
that you outlined a couple weeks ago
and then bunting's automatically on the fourth line
because the first three are filled.
This is what I was saying when O'Reilly came back.
This lineup has never been this versatile.
No.
they are wildly versatile they're the top six is all interchangeable the bottom six is all
interchangeable and there's even a couple guys who can do both and yarn crow probably being one
and bunting being a different version like we're labeling the lines three and four but they're
really hey they might get even amount of time you know they're gonna play in different situations
they're gonna be jumbled at some point because keith loves jumbling the lines you know but
But if you look at it on paper, like there's many situations where Bunting is going to be on the fourth line.
Scoring, scoring, grinding, grinding.
Yeah.
You got two pairs.
And I want – when Corey Perry gets in your shit and he takes a top-line player out of the lineup for two minutes, even if it's incidental minors, that hurts the Leafs more than it hurts the Lightning, right?
and so I want
I want him
and you know
I want
his ice time
is going to be limited
when you have Stamkos
and Kucherov
and all that sort of thing
I want Bunting
to get out there
be fresh
and
neutralize that guy
and I also want him
to win that
one-on-one battle
with Corey Perry
and the easiest way
to lose that battle
with Corey Perry
is get a penalty
when Austin Matthews
and Mitch Marner
are on the ice
that's the easiest way
to lose that battle
if it's
Noel Achari
and Matt Nye's or it's
Alex Kerfoot
and whoever else you want to play
with Alex Kerfoot today
it's fine
because you still have the other guys
so anyway we've sat on that too long
Callie Armstrong I want to talk
about him quickly because he has been
in the way that TJ Brody is on defense
so useful and yet
no one talks about him
20 goals but when he was signed
it was a 4 year deal 2.2 million per
even us we were like
okay good but we weren't like flipping in our seats about it we weren't like excited about it
and the first month felt a bit awkward for him you know he bounced around the lineup they weren't
quite sure what to do with him what has cali yarn croak brought the leafs that they perhaps didn't
have before uh so the lineup has been kind of getting slower um or just over the years they
were going fast fast fast and it wasn't working so they slowed down and they're a little bit more
purposeful he brought some of that speed back like he's a probably a top three fastest skater
on the team certainly the top three fastest forward um he's developed this goal scoring
touch at the front of the net that i didn't know was there he's defensively responsible he can play
all three forward positions what more do you want like sue greyhound sue greyhound no no he was
dubas's first ever client oh that's what it was okay even better even better he wasn't on team
sue he was on team kyle team team do yeah right bus delete this part delete this no it's it's
there are players like that like i always think about we were mentioning pittsburgh earlier but
the two guys that really stood out to me when or three guys i guess for the penguins when they were
and their back-to-back was Rust, Bonino, and Gensel.
And I'm not saying that he's got the scoring touch that Gensel has
or that he has the –
Not even sort of.
Not even sort of.
But you know what I'm –
but I'm saying that there's a usefulness to those players
and they kind of emerge late in the season.
And they sort of cement the roster.
They're glue-ish guys.
I think he's closer to –
Like, and again, I'm not saying direct comparable, but like a Pascal Dupuy.
Oh, I like that.
Sort of Chris Kunitz style.
Yeah.
I'm certainly not saying he's on that level, but.
No, that's what you said.
That's exactly what I said.
No, but like if we're comparing Penguins teams that went to back-to-back cup finals,
I think he's more comparable to those guys than the newer guys.
Okay.
And the last thing I want to say is how hard did you guys cheer for Matthew Nise's first goal that wasn't to be?
I was so pissed he didn't score it.
damn it i went yeah and then i saw o'reilly's face and i went no but then i was happy o'reilly
had to do it he tried he tried to wait it out yeah you know but it wasn't it was you need to
score the goal it was whatever he got his first career point yeah he was impactful he did take
uh the one high sticking penalty that dude's a thief he's a thief like good takeaways well you
see highlights and you're like okay he's big he can work the front of the net he can shoot he can
pass um but you know you're not really going to get like a uh college takeaway compilation
no no no or a tage thompson 2014 hype video yeah hell yeah like but i tell you what uh last night
especially um nice is such a good stylistic fit for the leafs i don't know if he's going to be
in the game one lineup um but this this guy's gonna be a really good lead it still looks like
a player who was just playing in college and was playing his second career in hl game yeah like
there are moments where he so when when you kind of don't know what to do on the ice when you're
in the offensive zone you kind of just default to go to the net there's a lot of i'm gonna hang out
in front of the net which is smart you know it's a smart thing to do when when you when you don't
really get your positioning down but there's so much room to grow with this kid i'm afraid to make
any judgments at all about matthew guys because he's so wrong well yeah and he hasn't played with
this team at all the whoopsie daisies per 60 are a little high right now but i think but there's
no judgments no like i can't say what he is what he isn't what i do like is if you're a head coach
and you're really in the weeds because head coaches are always like that like john cooper's
already starting um one thing you can say if for Sheldon Keefe that there's a positive on Matt
Nyes is that he hasn't looked out of place a b there's no real scouting report on him right like
you could talk about how he did at Boston College but how is that applicable to the playoffs the
Leafs would know him inside out I'm curious if other teams would all right yeah I don't I don't
think that they because here's the thing it's it's it's one thing that the Leafs know him and they
know conditioning and all that stuff but you need 20 games of a player at the nhl level to really
get a scouting report on them and at least and the lightning are just not going to have that
you're not available you're talking like it's a pitcher who just came up from triple a and
he's never faced major league hitters so they all don't know what kind of stuff he has and maybe
he's got a third pitch in development and he's not going to be a full-time roster guy until next
year but if he's got a fastball in the in the hundreds you might go well i could throw him
throw him out there against a couple and one of the advantages the batters have never seen him
So there's at least that upper hand he has on everybody.
Kind of an unspoken thing with third stringers who come up and they make a bunch of saves and everyone feels good about them.
If they stick around long enough, they kind of stink.
Because people figure them out.
Sometimes they're Alex Lyon and it continues and everything and they graduate to the NHL.
But it's very often, oh, you do this and then they get killed.
Oh, you can't do anything glove high.
We didn't know how to figure you out
We have you figured out
Hope you had fun
The Winnipeg Jets got the playoff spot they've been after
They did it by beating
The NHL's second best defensive team
Did you see that Connor Hellebuck save?
He reached back and with the paddle
And that game should have been over
There was another one
I had to catch up on
When I was doing the LFR
But the reason I was catching up on it
Brady from Game Over
was so fired up, pissed
with the Ryan Hartman hit on Nikolai Ehlers.
It was a bullshit hit.
And Ehlers, the puck was nowhere near
and Ehlers has to go off after that.
That sucks.
I agree that it sucks.
I disagree that the puck was nowhere near him.
Okay, well, you mean it was on the same ice surface as him?
How close do we have to be here?
So Ryan Hartman, I don't know how you call it.
It's certainly predatory, right?
yeah Hartman had an idea in mind but he had the puck so Ehlers is pursuing him
well but that's the thing he's not he's pursuing the puck so if Hartman has the puck and gets rid
of it is he eligible to clock Ehlers no I guess the answer is no because he got two minutes so
if you deem the hit to be illegal and he hurt the guy while doing an illegal thing should that not
be five in a game yes do you see how i talked myself into the complete opposite yeah i liked
i liked it though right that was entertaining i enjoyed that yeah but i i don't know i think
that's like that also might be too much for me with the with the refs like i understand it why
they only gave him two because like that was a lot to consider and the refs make it a split second
judgment so i will give them that i will give them not giving them a five and five in a game
but i do think that's why you make it five you make it five automatically so you have a chance
to review it oh smart like the nhl gave officials that get out of jail free card and they still
fuck it up yeah it's like the the high sticking calls called double minor you get to go look at
back and then you're like oh that wasn't anything yeah because it's a that's a high stakes mistake
to make yeah oh dr seuss over here but you know uh i don't that's an easy five the dude is down
on the ice there was a huge chaotic brawl that broke out call it five review it if you still
feel it's two i think if you feel it's two you call it five review it and call it two just to
make sure um i don't understand why they didn't do that ehlers uh by the way he's had just a bad
it's just been a bad year not like i don't think he and i don't think it's a bad career
like no no i'm not saying he's bad i'm saying dude he's an he's an exquisite player
nikolai ehlers is so good he has super dave's luck oh yeah okay i see what you're saying he
he gets hurt so often coaches refuse to play him more than like 15 minutes i i don't understand it
So, sorry, I'm not saying he's had a shit career.
I'm saying he should be so much more of a household name in this league than he is.
I think part of that, too, is the way that the Jets have built their team
and the style they want to play.
Play good players, though.
I know, but, you know, they double down on guys like Wheeler and Shifley
when guys like Line A and Ehlers were right there, too.
Yeah.
Right?
And so, you know, I think like only the Winnipeg Jets
and the way that they run things could run a 40-goal
score out of town that fast.
And I wonder... You're talking about line A.
Line A. I wonder if Ehlers...
Despite them making the playoffs, and I
wish Ehlers the best and everything, I wonder
if he gets traded this offseason. Is that why
Scheifele stopped on 39 for so long?
I don't know. He didn't want to get
traded? Oh, man, I kind of like it here.
If I score 40, I'm gone.
You also got to think, like, Ehlers doesn't
have the Hyundai commercials.
You know, if everybody was saying
wow at Ehlers. No, it's wah.
Wah at Ehlers, then maybe he'd be his name brand of Shifley.
Yeah, it's true.
First of all, wow, that's hilarious.
Second of all, Shifley has that commercial?
Yeah, he does a hundred commercials.
The little kid who's like, it's Mark Shifley.
Oh, what's the Zach Hyman one?
It's the exact same commercial, except it's Zach Hyman.
Oh, it's Zach Hyman.
Wah.
You don't watch a lot of the Saturday games, I guess, and commercials.
I can't.
Yeah, so.
I can't.
Yeah, I wish they would feed you the commercials.
So you could laugh at the commercial with me.
Or you could laugh at the wah.
There's another one.
I won't even mention it, but there's a couple restaurant commercials
that Steve and I will send back and forth to each other
every time this one restaurant commercial comes on
because it's right out of this world.
I don't understand it.
So commercial breaks are not breaks for me.
I know.
I know.
You keep going.
I get two breaks a game.
First intermission, second intermission.
That's a lot.
That's a lot.
And in the playoffs, I'll sometimes get an OT intermission.
Great.
All I'll say is Ehlers needs a Hyundai commercial.
Are they going to let you do the Leafs series,
or are you going to do Edmonton?
We're doing the Leafs as far as I know.
He's doing draft, off-season topics.
All I know is the first round.
We're doing the Flames Locker cleanout.
Watch it by Coca-Cola.
That would be interesting.
It actually probably would.
zero sugar my bad my bad are you gonna tell everybody what's uh up at the wall on next
to your desk here at sdpn studios what's on the wall next to my desk habs logo oh yeah and a leafs
logo it's a lovely painting from our vp of sales christina yeah of what the habs one is a leafs
logo. Another is a Habs
logo. Another is an
NHL logo and another is an SCPN logo.
I had a grown man say to me this
year, oh, I just
can't get over the fact that he actually put a Habs jersey on.
And he was serious. I know. This man is
older than I am. I know.
And I was like, I can't believe that you, and
this guy works in advertising. I'm like, I can't
believe that you who are in advertising
cannot understand how a broadcaster
works. I'm like, what the fuck
are you talking about? He's not going to burn
a lie. Steve,
Steve betrayed us when the Leafs got eliminated
and he continued to work.
What an asshole.
Like, I can't believe that's a thing.
I had fun with the thing for work
and we raised money for SickKids while I did it.
I sleep about that.
I don't fucking care what people think.
Hilarious.
Okay, I want to say the question for Winnipeg now.
By the way, I love the fight at the end of the game
with Reeves going out and Adam Lowry.
And that was a bullshit move by Everson.
No question.
What I loved was Rick Boness calling Dean
Everson small and then Dean Everson
Saying nothing and then going
Come on over
What movie villain does Dean Everson
Remind me of
He actually Dean Everson doesn't
Remind he reminds me of that guy from the
Office who's always up to crazy stuff
The bald guy
What's his name
You know the guy who's always
You know the office
Steve Carell
The guy who's bald in the office who's kind of crazy
creed oh yeah yeah everson reminds me creed is that how you describe he looks like a milk bag
or no sorry he's not bald looks like a milk bag version of dna margaret great job getting that
one i had no idea where it was going um no i feel like he looks like he was he does he looks like
that is it lieutenant surge from pokemon dean everson doesn't look like creed yes he does
yes he absolutely does
maybe I don't know what he looks like
but also like
do you remember the movie Toy Soldiers
yes he absolutely does
never mind he looks pretty much
a lot like Creed
dead ringer for Creed
let me pull it up
I'm going to look up
Toy Soldiers Villain
Toy Soldiers Villain
there is a
there is a
what the fuck was the movie
they like tried to make like a grittier version of toy story remember yeah and it was the soldiers
and the aliens in this and you bought the toys and they would kill each other oh my god
chip hazard he looks exactly like chip hazard the second the second google image when you
look up dean evans him and creed it's crazy
wow see i when i think of dean evanson i think of him with hair in this minnesota
in this wild photo oh yeah with his hair this is what i think but then yeah this dude is creed
no he's chip hazard look at this no he's he's more creed he's more creed i think he's more creed
even the smile yeah it's a good film it is a good film i like it it's all led zeppelin
soundtrack too um uh so the question for winnipeg by the way is who are they playing are they
playing vegas or are they playing edmonton because both vegas and edmonton won last night in case
you're wondering if game 82 will matter which means both teams are fighting for the chance to
play winnipeg rather than the other opponent which is the los angeles kings who are only a couple of
points behind both of them but i think their time just ran out right i dare either of you to take
winnipeg in either of those series no i don't think i could um the oilers beating colorado
was like a statement you can't make me but you're not my dad if vegas wins its next game it would
play winnipeg but if it does falter edmonton could take over if they win uh and that would have
serious i i'm interested about about this because if edmonton if if uh excuse me let me start this
again if vegas wins their next game it's going to play winnipeg if it falters and edmonton takes
over that could seriously affect the los angeles kings if they lose their second game in a row
they would be tied with the seattle kraken and they would lose their spot to the crack and the
kraken would move up to third in the division oh because the kraken hold the row uh so that the
regulation overtime wins combined over them and then they would have to take on the apps the kings
could be a wild card the kings could be a wild card team having to take on the colorado avalanche
I'm just going to let the games play out and then see what the series are.
No, this is exciting.
They all need to win.
All of them.
I wasn't following.
It's unusual there's one series locked in.
One series.
In the whole playoffs.
And it's the Leafs and Lightning.
And it's been locked in for like a month.
And it shouldn't be.
Yeah.
So again, if you're confused by it, here's what it is.
If Vegas wins next game, it doesn't matter.
They're going to play Winnipeg.
Okay.
But if Vegas loses and Edmonton wins and therefore takes over top spot in the division,
could have serious effects for LA
who if they lose their next game
and last game of the season,
they'd be tied with the Kraken
and LA would then lose their spot to the Kraken
because the Kraken hold the tie break
and LA would then have to take on the Apple.
And the Kraken also have to win.
The Kraken also have to win, yes.
The Kraken needs three teams to lose.
Do you get it?
And do any of them play each other?
Yes, Kraken I think are playing Vegas.
adam oh yeah list all the nhl games remaining are you not i was like i was looking at this
morning like holy shit there's so much happening in the west it's very exciting i just need to
see it in like a chart yeah you're right you do need a visual yeah um i need to see a chart a
couple a couple of things before we go to the press conference if we i don't understand this
can you put it in a meme uh boston bruins passed the 76 77 canadians for most points in a regular
season all-time with 133 they also set the wins record for 64 wins uh the old record 63 held by
the boston bruins of three days ago i was like no it wasn't lena soulmark uh left partway through
the game but according to the head coach he'll be fine but there was a little bit of even though
you swim and you still go uh also last yesterday and i think we should mention these because it's
not fair to to non-playoff teams uh petterson becomes the sixth canuck 12th nhl suite ever to
hit over 100 points of the season the canucks have four of the 12 nhl suites to hit 100 points
in a season name them and they're easy uh wait sorry four of the 12 four 12 suites have hit 100
points the canucks have had four of them who have they been well elias petterson henrik and daniel
uh and then who was the star pre henrik and daniel
come on oh marcus now that's right man henrik and daniel were so good that he's like almost
forgettable oh yeah the bertuzzi nasland uh brennan morrison era they were they were amazing
and no one talks about it uh nhl cover athlete oh there yes yeah the one one thing that would
have been interesting if he ever hit 100 you could have included matt sundin he did matt
And he never hit 100, eh?
I don't think so.
No, he was a Canuck.
Not as a Canuck.
No, but he did hit it as a North.
Yeah, he hit it as a North.
What was his one year with the Canuck?
Yeah, 114 was his one year that he did it.
He was actually good in his one year as a Canuck.
He just played half the game.
28 points in 41 games.
Not bad.
Oh, that was only 41 games?
And he had eight points in eight games in the playoffs.
He was good.
Okay.
It's just the team wasn't.
Yeah, yeah.
Too bad.
Jack Hughes also set the Devils record for points in a season with 97, surpassing—
With 32, because they're the New Jersey Devils.
I know.
Patrick Eliash in 2000-2001 set the record with 96.
Jay Pandolfo.
I know.
It's crazy.
Had 16 points in a season once.
Set a Devils all-time record.
Dinah Zubris.
Think of all the great school scorers that have played for the Devils.
Shanahan, Kovalchuk.
Scott Gomez.
Scott Gomez.
There have been Dave Clarkson.
Oh, yeah.
Let's go.
None of them hit 50 goals.
Brian Gionta holds the record because I had to look it up.
Ken Clee.
48 goals in 05-06.
Hughes has 43 this year, so he's probably not going to pass him with one game to go
unless he has an outrageous game.
3.9?
But I think Hughes is most likely to pass him in the coming season.
Broder is 10th on that list.
I bet he is.
I bet he fucking is.
they also eliminated the Sabres
who had a good run yesterday
and one day
and it's not today
I want to have a conversation
with Detroit Red Wings fans
I want to have a chat
because at some point
you're going to have to convince me
that they've turned a corner
now if they get Conor Bedard this year
because they're in the lottery
different conversation
but at some point
someone's going to have to step up
and become what the Sabres did this year
because we are in half a decade
where they have been in the lottery every year.
Half a decade.
Red Wings get bedarred.
They win a cup and they win it fast.
Yes, but if they don't
and this new lottery pick needs three or four more years to develop
like the rest of them have,
at what point are we starting to say,
okay, when do you turn a corner here?
Not today.
Not today.
But from what I'm seeing for Red Wings Twitter,
they're kind of fed up with it.
I'm higher on the Red Wings than maybe they are.
Listen, I get that.
But at some point, you're going to—
I was also higher on the Canucks, so—
It's nice to be high on a team.
They have to do it.
I thought not today.
You're right.
Not today.
It's not today.
Let's get into the Sebastian Costa conversation.
Press conference.
Let's go.
The Presser SDP.
The Steve Dangle Press Conference.
All right.
For the press conference, I think we should answer the most asked question.
Where are you guys?
And the answer to that is not Adam's house
No
This is not his new house
This is Studio One
Oh, this is Studio One?
Studio Three
I don't even know the name of the studios
You named them
Studio Three that we built here
I don't know
Should we do like every Friday here or something?
We can
I don't know
I like it
It's great fun
We should come in here every once in a while
It's nice, absolutely
It's a fern day
for every fern oh no the ferns are fake by the way the uh the studio oh hey hey hey oh no they're
super real hey i water them every day yeah um studio one is under construction the wall is
one of the walls is going in so that's why we're not there right and will anybody see that wall
no no but what it will do is reduce the glare on the tv screen actually no it won't no it will
actually add glare you know there'll be more glare yeah we're putting a bunch of glass
on the wall so that it bounces off the tv and creates more glare
actually yeah we we bought because you were saying that you got like a screen for it to be non-glare
yeah yeah so we actually we went out and we said jesse we think we need more so we're going to have
the pro glare screen out there i'm very excited to show that off it's going to shine right into
your eyeballs as you watch this video i it's funny we walked in we walked into here at one
point and we were setting up sort of the ideas for the studios and i looked at jesse i'm like
this feels like a room that could use some exposed brick yeah and so jesse was like say no more and
we ended up with this yeah usually how things go they'll be like steven adam will throw an idea
and i'll be like okay that's my project well you could ask for help but you never do one thing
you need to know here's what jesse does jesse will not ask for help not ask for help not ask
for help it'll get done and then and then we'll be like wow how'd you do that it seems like a lot
of work i'm fine yeah well clearly exhausted i'm fine you should you should ask for help
from people that you know will be helpful wow wow and and there was really no way you two would
have been helpful in this situation steve would have not shown up to any of the meetings with the
construction company adam would have made no decisions on the chairs or the tables but i
built the chairs i want you to know oh yeah no you were adam you also were helpful and i did ask for
a lot of your help in building some of the do you ever think it's funny that your birthday's so close
to easter why oh just giving the story what i'm is jesse jesus like oh just you know you're up
here dying for our sins building the whole thing yourself oh yeah and he sure loves to bear that
cross for us doesn't it no i have to i have to hold this i have to hold the cross for this network
keep it afloat um make sure we have studios but yeah so this is this is gonna be one we're not
we're not sure what totally we'll use this for all the time but obviously in a pinch it's a good
wanted to jump into so it's kind of good it's a nice casual it makes us look like podcast douchebags
like let's put that out there yeah but it's fun it's here's how you become a millionaire fast
misogyny end of video and and you're not making enough money yeah i saw worthless piece of shit
i saw a guy on tiktok this morning sit in a studio just like this and say you know what really
changed things for me the guy's like i don't know what the guy's like seeing kylie jenner on the
cover forbes and he's like you know at that point this is legit this is what this guy said he's like
at that point i was pulling in 15 to 17 million a year and i thought that was good
he's like but i was never going to be a billionaire at that number and he said what i needed to
understand was brand oh yeah and i'm like what the fuck is this guy talking about good that you're
rich cool good for you but that was the whole conversation then it's like and then it's like
you should follow.
You know those top 20 most influential people
under 30 or whatever list that Forbes does?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You have to pay to get on those.
Oh, do you?
Yeah.
You pay, you submit your,
like your PR person submits the form
and you pay to Forbes and you get on those lists.
And the Kardashians would never miss a PR opportunity.
Which is a little on the nose.
Yeah.
It's not like...
Buying your influence?
Yeah.
It's a little on the nose.
It's not like Forbes goes out and makes a list
and seeks out the most influential people.
No, you are getting your PR people to submit
to be on these lists.
kidding yeah well it's funny uh the walk of fame in hollywood you gotta pay to have your star there
you also have to do community service hours yeah yeah i don't know you you pay for that you do
community service hours nobody honors you you have to submit yourself no you have to go and
beg these people do i have to pay to get on the ajax walk i don't know how those were
but you haven't been you haven't been you don't deserve to be on the ajax walk
You've been in Ajax for an hour
What have you done for Ajax
Scarborough does have a walk of fame
Is your mom on it
I think she is
Isn't that crazy
That is a wild question for me to ask
And answer for you to ask
Is your mom on the Scarborough walk of fame
Scarborough walk of fame
And your answer is I think so but I don't know
I don't actually know
Ryerson or TMU
Hall of Fame like you should
Have you talked to them about that
You probably have to pay for that too
Cause that's not the sort of thing where you call up
Hey have you decided I'm important
You know what's funny about that though
Is so for the
Who do you think I am
The Humber one that I got that Steve didn't take seriously
Back in the day
Do you remember Jesse do you remember when I was like
Hey I got inducted in the Humber Radio Hall of Fame
And Steve's like so
And he did come
I didn't think you cared
it was it was a gag on the show it was it was it was absolutely it was a gag on the show and
people were like it was nice for steve to make his presence steve didn't give a shit i wore a
button-up shirt fuck you yeah but in the moment you didn't care there's also a picture of us in
front of the step and repeat and they're licking my face oh yeah i don't know why but uh but this
happened just like 2017 so it was a while ago but i i i uh i didn't have to submit for that they just
they just yeah they pick you up that was an actual so but i'm wondering with the university because
that's a college. I'm wondering with a university, it's like, well, first, Steve, we need you to become a part
of our alumni association and make a nice little donation to the
TMU, whatever. They're not the Rams anymore.
You might have to buy their... Bold. TMU Bold.
I was looking at Marker at CSUNU.
What is the NASCAR?
It's a Falcon. Why?
Thank you for that, Misha.
why is it a falcon
just leave the ram
no because the ram had things to do with
Egerton
what if it just became a ram
if the vast majority of people have to
ask you why it's a ram
just leave it a ram
you know what that's a good point
it is a good point
99 of people don't know why the ram's bad listen we understand that they had the ram i get why they
needed to change the name but it was yes like it was you also had the opportunity to do something
cool and what they chose was we're going to name the school something vanilla we're going to name
the team something vanilla and our mascot's going to be something vanilla call them rammy the ram
honestly it would have been funnier if they'd been the toronto metropolitan university wildcats
yeah like that would have been funny it was a lot of things you know what he wasn't a ram
just make it rami the ram rebrand he used to be uh he used to be eggy so they
definitely had to change his name yeah call him rebrandy the ram
just leave it i went there four years i had no idea about the ram
oh no no i i didn't know no idea adam do you don't count i went for a year you went for like
and promptly left and i didn't get it either i'm not making a donation i never missed a tuition
payment though oh yeah that's that was the whole point of this yeah you need to get on the alumni
that's what it is they want you to because when you go to university it's it's like not it's it's
the things like well if you make a donation that you're part of the board of the trustees yeah
and then you can get into those things because then you can work the politics so you get voted
in that's how you get it what if i gotta work the system what if i just want nice weather and to
have an amaretto on ice well then i then i i would say you don't want to be in the the rta hall of
fame i don't need it all right i can tell you how much i'm so great i'm proud of i'm proud of being
in the humber radio hall of fame but i can tell you that it has changed my life exactly nothing
It changed it a little.
We went to a big party.
We didn't go to the party, and the party was nice, and my parents were proud.
Yeah.
You found out things about your friends.
You found out I don't give a shit.
Yeah.
You gave a speech.
I did.
Yeah.
It's not high enough on the list to reach Steve's bar, but I did give a speech.
Yeah.
Which I think I winged.
I don't know if it was any good.
I don't know.
No, it wasn't.
Okay.
All right.
Well, there you go.
Anyway.
I was like, this is why I didn't want to come.
Anyway, Studio 3.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
It's at TMU.
It's called the Ram Memorial Suite.
It's called the Ram.
It's called the Ram and the Rye.
Hey, $2 beers back in 2015.
I want it to be in letters up here.
What if it was just a ram?
What if it was just a ram?
It's an animal.
It's fine that it's a ram.
That's all I'm saying.
Anyway.
For anybody listening who has no idea what this place looks like,
we are uh there's a brick wall we have high leather back chairs that look very vintage and
we have a bunch of fake ferns that's right listen feel that brick real brick it's good brick try
not to hit it too hard i did it too hard yeah why is it might be drywall it's not drywall
we got real brick in here no it's a really good painter show these people it's not like
see show the brick go the brick you can't feel it they're real brick pieces yeah there you go
it's not like adam's place my place is real brick that was actually no i'm talking about the studio
nobody saw your your house i don't like how you my apartment no i'm talking about the studio oh
you mean at the house oh yeah yeah you should have designed it differently you should have
designed it so that there were a bunch of flimsy pieces of foam on the wall that i would brush
past and knock off the wall every fucking time every fucking time that actually happened and
steve scotch do you feel like we got to fix that and we never did how long did it take you to build
one tv stand as long as it took to get it built and then i built another one because i was not
deterred yeah yeah i seem to remember that studio took the entire length of the south park season
yeah because that's what we watched the entire time and steve did one thing that whole time
was build one the hardest thing you and adam put together shitty ikea furniture eight tables and
six chairs and steve built one any toddler could have built that shit did leo go up like to build
those tv stands how many grades did leo graduate by the time he built the tv stand listen he starts
his rookie year in the ohl next week and he's gonna play for the um what team did i play for
I already forget my
The Plymouth Whalers
There you go
Just like his father
Just like his daddy
Yep
And you're going to watch that
On your TV
On your TV stand
Yeah
That's right
That I brought here
Yeah
Steve by the way
Was the TV stands
We still use them
We do
And Steve was asking for them
He was like
What are we going to do
With those TV stands
You sure could use
A TV stand out in Jax
Well you know
Maybe I want to
I wouldn't want to
Build one again
I wouldn't want to
Spend the $30
From Amazon
on to get another one. Well, no, it's not
buying it. It's the building. That was not $30.
It's the building. Yeah, it was $30.
That studio was put together with tape and glue, man.
That was a cheap, cheap studio.
But we managed it. And now, listen to that
expensive.
Here, let's see if I can hit it harder.
No.
Anyway,
we'll leave it at that.
We'll see you Friday. There's so
much to get figured out through there. Do you guys want me
to run through the Vegas thing again, or is that
too long? I just want to see what happens if I
throw this black puck at that. We don't do that.
We'll see you on Friday.
